Abstract
BACKGROUND Doxorubicin (dox) is a chemotherapeutic agent widely used against various tumors. However, the clinical use of this agent is limited due to various organ toxicities. Taurine is an intracellular free β-amino acid with antioxidant properties. The present study investigated the protective mechanism of taurine on dox-induced hepatotoxicity. METHODS In total, 31 male Sprague-Dawley rats were used in the study. The control group received intraperitoneal (i.p.) 0.9% NaCl alone for 14 days; the taurine (Tau) group received i.p. taurine 150 mg/kg body weight/day for 14 days; the dox group received dox on days 12, 13, and 14 at a cumulative dose of 25 mg/kg body weight/3 days; and the tau+dox group received taurine and dox together at the same dose and through the same route. On day 15, biochemical evaluations were performed on blood samples taken from the left ventricle followed by histological examinations on liver samples. RESULTS Dox was found to increase liver function enzymes and tissue protein carbonyl levels, causing congestion and tissue damage, thereby leading to dysfunction. Tau was found to histologically preserve the liver morphology without showing any corrective effect on oxidative stress parameters. These findings suggest that the membrane-stabilizing effect of taurine may be more effective than its radical scavenging activity in preventing dox-induced toxicity. CONCLUSION Taurine can prevent doxorubicin-induced hepatotoxicity through non-antioxidant pathways.

Abstract
AIM Empagliflozin (EMPA) is a sodium-glucose transporter-2 inhibitor used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes and has positive effects on cardiovascular outcomes. Amitriptyline (AMT) can be used in many clinical indications but leads to cardiotoxicity by causing QT prolongation. Our aim in this study was to determine how the effects of the concomitant use of empagliflozin and amitriptyline, which have been shown to have effects on sodium and calcium metabolism in cardiomyocytes, would cause an effect on QT and QTc intervals in clinical practice. METHODS Twenty-four male Wistar albino rats were randomised into four groups. The control group received only physiological serum (1 ml) via orogastric gavage (OG). The EMPA group received empagliflozin (10 mg/kg) via OG. The AMT group received amitriptyline (100 mg/kg) via OG. The AMT + EMPA group (n = 6) received amitriptyline (100 mg/kg) and empagliflozin (10 mg/kg). Under anaesthesia, QT and QTc intervals were measured at baseline, and in the first and second hours. RESULTS In the AMT group, QT intervals and QTc values were found to be statistically longer than in the control group (p ≤ 0.001). Empagliflozin significantly ameliorated amitriptyline-induced QT and QTc prolongation. In the AMT + EMPA group, QT and QTc intervals were significantly lower compared to that in the AMT group (p < 0.01). CONCLUSION In this study, we determined that empagliflozin significantly ameliorated amitriptyline-induced QT and QTc prolongation. This effect was probably due to the opposite effects of these two agents in the intracellular calcium balance. With more clinical trials, the routine use of empagliflozin may be suggested to prevent QT and QTc prolongation in diabetic patients receiving amitriptyline.

Abstract
In this study, a biological conduit, consisting of an adipocyte-derived mesenchymal stem cell (AdMSCs) sheet and amniotic membrane (AM), was designed for the reconstruction of peripheral nerve defects. To evaluate the effect of the produced conduit on neural regeneration, a 10-mm sciatic nerve defect was created in rats, and experiments were carried out on six groups, i.e., sham control group (SC), negative control group (NC), nerve autograft group (NG), the biological conduit (AdMSCs + AM) group, the commercial PGA tube conduit (PGA) group, and the conduit only consisting of AM (AM) group. The effects of different nerve repair methods on the peripheral nerve and gastrocnemius muscle were evaluated by functional, histological, and immunohistochemical tests. When the number of myelinated axons was compared between the groups of AdMSCs + AM and PGA, it was higher in the AdMSCs + AM group (p < 0.05). The percentage of gastrocnemius collagen bundle area of AdMSCs + AM group was found to be statistically lower than the PGA group (p < 0.05). The muscle fiber diameter of AdMSCs + AM group was lower than that of the NG group, but significantly higher than that of the PGA group and the AM group (p < 0.001). Muscle weight index was significantly higher in the AdMSCs + AM group compared to the PGA group (p < 0.05). It was observed that nerve regeneration was faster in the AdMSCs + AM group, and there was an earlier improvement in pin-prick score and sciatic functional index compared to the PGA group and the AM group. In conclusion, the biological conduit prepared from the AdMSCs sheet and AM is regarded as a new biological conduit that can be used as an alternative treatment method to nerve autograft in clinical applications.

Background
Empagliflozin is a SGLT-2 inhibitor used in the treatment of Type 2 diabetes and has positive effects on cardiovascular outcomes. Amitriptyline can be used in many clinical indications but leads to cardiotoxicity by causing QT prolongation.
Aim
Our aim in the present study is to observe the effect of the concomitant use of amitriptyline and empagliflozin together, which have an effect on sodium and calcium balance in myocytes, on QTc by using ECG.
Materials and methods
Twenty-four male Wistar-Albino rats were randomized into four groups. The control group received only serum physiologic (1ml) via orogastric gavage (OG). The EMPA group received empagliflozin (10 mg/kg) via OG. The AMT group received amitriptyline (100 mg/kg) via OG. The AMT+EMPA group (n: 6) received amitriptyline and empagliflozin at same dose. Under anesthesia; QT and QTC intervals were measured at baseline, first, and second hours.
Results
The differences in QT and QTc values between the AMT group and control group were observed from the 1nd hour (Table 1, Figure 1). It was detected that the measurements of the control group were within normal limits. In the control group, QT was 77.33±9.02 ms at the basal, 73.50±2.26 ms at the 1st hour, 78.17±6.18 ms at the 2nd hour. QTc calculation was 165.42±18.34±10.5 ms at the basal, 166.63±17.92 msat the 1st hour, 184.65±12.86 ms at the 2nd hour. ECG findings of the EMPA group were within normal limits and similar to the control group (Table 1). The durations of QT interval and QTc calculations were found to be statistically longer in the AMT group than the control group at the 1st and 2nd hour (p≤0.001). Empagliflozin significantly ameliorated AMT-induced QT and QTc prolongation. The durations of QT interval were significantly lower at first (p<0,001) and 2nd hours (p<0.01) in the AMT+EMPA group compared to the AMT group. Moreover, QTc calculation was significantly lower in the AMT+EMP group than the AMT group at 1st and 2nd hour (P<0.01) (Table 1). Electrocardiographic comparisons of all groups for one second within the second hour can be seen in Figure 2.
Conclusion
In the present study, we have detected that empagliflozin significantly ameliorates amitriptyline induced QT prolongation. This effect is probably due to the opposite effects of these two agents in the intracellular calcium balance. It's known that; toxic dose of amitriptyline increases the amount of Sarcoplasmic Ca and the calcium permeability of Ryanodine channels, decreases SERCA-mediated Ca-reuptake by decreasing the calcium binding capacity of calsequestrin, and these leads QTc prolongation. It has been shown that empagliflozin increases Ca reuptake by causing a significant increase in SERCA activity, and decreases Ca sparks by causing inhibition of Ryanodine activity. With more clinical trials, the routine use of empagliflozin may be suggested to prevent QTc prolongation in the diabetic patients receiving amitriptyline.

Abstract
Empagliflozin (EMPA) is a SGLT-2 inhibitor that has positive effects on cardiovascular outcomes. In this study, we aim to evaluate the possible protective effects of EMPA against doxorubicin (DOX)-induced acute cardiotoxicity. Non-diabetic Sprague-Dawley rats were randomized into four groups. The control group received serum physiologic (1 ml), the EMPA group received EMPA, the DOX group was administered cumulatively 18 mg/kg body weight DOX. The DOX+EMPA group was administered DOX and EMPA. In the DOX group, LVDED (P < 0.05) and LVSED (P < 0.01), QTc interval (P < 0.001), the ratio of karyolysis and karyorrhexis (P < 0.001) and infiltrative cell proliferation (P < 0.001) were found to be higher than; EF, FS and normal cell morphology were lower than the control group (P < 0.001). In the DOX+EMPA group, LVEDD (P < 0.05) and LVESD (P < 0.01) values, QTc interval (P < 0.001), karyolysis and karyorrhexis ratios (P < 0.001) and infiltrative cell proliferation were lower (P < 0.01); normal cell morphology and EF were higher compared to the DOX group (P < 0.001). Our results showed that empagliflozin significantly ameliorated DOX-induced acute cardiotoxicity.

Abstract
MATERIALS AND METHODS After forming of the thin endometrium by uterine injection of 0.2 ml 96% ethyl alcohol to the rats, five days of subcutaneous injections of 40 μg/kg G-CSF or saline were given. Endometrial thickness, immunohistochemically expression of vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-2 (VEGF-R2), proliferative cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) and fibronectin apoptosis with TUNEL method were compared in specimens among four groups of post-model rats. RESULTS Endometrial thickness was significantly improved in thin but not in normal endometrium group with GCSF when compared to saline injection. Stromal and glandular epithelial expression of PCNA and pericapillary VEGF-R2 was significantly increased, and apoptosis was significantly decreased with G-CSF. Although fibronectin was also increased with G-CSF in the thin endometrium, the difference was non-significant. In further, G-CSF decreased apoptotic cells and increased expression of PCNA when compared to saline injection in normal endometrium. CONCLUSIONS G-CSF improves endometrial thickness, proliferation, angiogenesis and DNA fragmentation in thin endometrium.

Introduction
Sotalol (SOT) is a Class 3 antiarrhythmic drug and commonly used for various arrhythmia treatments. However; it can prolong QT interval and lead to malignant arrhythmias. Empagliflozin is a selective SGLT-2 inhibitor used in the treatment of Type 2 diabetes and has been shown to have positive effects on cardiovascular outcomes. Since the effect of empagliflozin (EMPA) on potassium channel activation is not yet known, there is no recommendation for the concomitant use of these drugs.
Purpose
In this study, we aimed to evaluate possible protective effects of empagliflozin in sotalol induced QT prolongation.
Materials and methods
Twenty-four male Wistar Alba rats were randomized into four groups. The first (control) group (n: 6) received only serum physiologic (1ml) via orogastric gavage (OG). The second (EMPA) group (n: 6) received EMPA (10 mg/kg) via OG. The third (SOT) group (n: 6) received SOT (80 mg/kg) via OG. The fourth (EMPA+SOT) group (n: 6) received EMPA (10 mg/kg) and SOT (80 mg/kg) via OG. Under anesthesia; PR, QT intervals and heart rate (HR) were measured and QTc value was also calculated at second hour on lead II using electrocardiogram (ECG).
Results
In the SOT group; QT intervals, T wave durations and QTc values were found to be statistically longer than the control group, whereas HR was found to be lower than the control group (p<0.01). In the EMPA+SOT group; QT intervals, T wave durations and QTc values were significantly lower and HR was significantly higher compared to the SOT group (p<0.001, p<0.01, p<0.001, p<0.001 respectively) (Table)
Conclusion
In the present study, we detected that EMPA significantly ameliorates SOT induced QT prolongation. In addition to this, we have also shown that EMPA can be used safely with SOT in clinical practice. With more clinical trials, the routine use of EMPA may be suggested to prevent QTc prolongation in diabetic patients receiving SOT. Finally; our study indicates that EMPA can effect on potassium channels.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The most common treatment modalities of ectopic pregnancy may influence long-term subsequent fertility outcomes in women who previously treated for ectopic pregnancy. AIMS Our objective was to compare long-term subsequent fertility outcomes after treatment with expectant management, systemic methotrexate (MTX) and surgery in tubal ectopic pregnancy. METHODS We searched our database for all women diagnosed with tubal ectopic pregnancy between January 2007 and January 2011 who were managed expectantly, with systemic MTX and with surgery. Treatment success and spontaneous pregnancy rates were compared in patients who desire to conceive following a tubal pregnancy. RESULTS One hundred twelve of 151 women desired to conceive following tubal ectopic pregnancy. Twenty-seven of 112 (24.1 %) patients were managed expectantly. Fifty-three (47.3 %) and 32 (28.5 %) patients were managed with systemic MTX or surgery, respectively. All patients in expectant and surgery groups were managed successfully. Two (3.7 %) patients had surgery after failed treatment with systemic MTX. Spontaneous intrauterine pregnancy rates were 62.9 % in expectantly managed women, 58.4 % in women with systemic MTX and 68.7 % in women with surgery (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Treatment of ectopic pregnancy with either expectant management or systemic MTX is equally effective as compared to surgery. Spontaneous intrauterine pregnancy rates were comparable in expectant management, systemic methotrexate and surgery.

Abstract
In this study, long and short term inhibition impacts of Ag, CuO and CeO2 nanoparticles (NPs) on anaerobic digestion (AD) of waste activated sludge (WAS) were investigated. CuO NPs were detected as the most toxic NPs on AD. As the CuO NP concentration increased from 5 to 1000 mg per gTS, an increase in the inhibition of AD from 5.8 to 84.0% was observed. EC50 values of short and long term inhibitions were calculated as 224.2 mgCuO per gTS and 215.1 mgCuO per gTS, respectively. Ag and CeO2 NPs did not cause drastic impacts on AD as compared to CuO NPs. In the long term test, Ag NPs created 12.1% decrease and CeO2 NPs caused 9.2% increase in the methane production from WAS at the highest dosage. FISH imaging also revealed that the abundance of Archaea in raw WAS was similar in short and long term tests carried out with WAS containing Ag and CeO2 NPs. On the other hand, CuO NPs caused inhibition of Archaea in the long term test. Digestion kinetics of WAS containing Ag, CeO2, CuO NPs were also evaluated with Gompertz, Logistic, Transference and First Order models. The hydrolysis rate constant (kH) for each concentration of Ag and CeO2 NPs and the raw WAS was 0.027745 d(-1) while the kH of WAS containing high concentrations of CuO NPs was found to be 0.001610 d(-1).

Abstract
Stent thrombosis (ST) is considered as a multifactorial problem which is mostly occurs due to clopidogrel resistance. It may be due to some CYP450 enzyme deficiencies which play role in clopidogrel metabolism. Therefore the aim of this study is to detect the mutations in CYP2C19 and CYP2C9 genes which may cause ST, and to investigate the relation between other risk factors and ST. 50 individuals who have stent thrombosis and 50 individuals who haven't got any complication were enrolled as patient and control group respectively. *2,*3,*4,*5,*17 mutations in CYP2C19 gene and *2 ve *3 mutations in CYP2C9 gene were investigated with RT-PCR. Clopidogrel and aspirin resistance were investigated with multiple electrode platelet aggregometry. Results were evaluated statistically. CYP2C19*2 mutation was found statistically higher in patients (% 18), whereas CYP2C19*17 was found statistically higher in controls (% 36)(p<0.05). Additionally, it was found that patients who have clopidogrel and/or aspirin resistance also have CYP2C19*1/*2 or CYPC19*2/*2 genotype. These relations were also found statistically significant. (p=0,000005 for clopidogrel resistance and p=0,000059 for aspirin resistance). In conclusion, it was suggested that there is a relation between CYP2C19*2 mutations and ST due to clopidogrel resistance, and CYP2C19*17 may have a protective role in this process. The use of novel and more potent drug or high clopidogrel maintenance dosing before stent implantation may be beneficial treatment options for antiplatelet therapy in CYP2C19*2 carriers.

Abstract
To evaluate the effects of hypercholesterolemia on the relaxation function of the urinary bladder, we examined the physiological mechanisms involved in the isoproterenol-induced relaxation in isolated detrusor strips in vitro and voiding behavior in vivo in rats. Adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed standard (control, N = 16) or 4 % cholesterol diet (hypercholesterolemia, N = 17) for 4 weeks. Concentration-response curves for isoproterenol-induced relaxations in carbachol-precontracted detrusor muscle strips were recorded. The contributions of β2- and β3-adrenoceptors and ATP-dependent and Ca(2+)-dependent potassium channels to the relaxation response were investigated by using selective adrenergic agonists salbutamol and BRL 37344 and specific potassium channel inhibitors glibenclamide and charybdotoxin, respectively. Cystometrography was performed to assess bladder function. Hypercholesterolemic rats had higher serum cholesterol and low- and high-density lipoprotein levels than the controls with no sign of atherosclerosis. Isoproterenol-induced relaxation was significantly enhanced in the hypercholesterolemia group. Preincubation with the M2 receptor antagonist attenuated the relaxation response in both groups. The relaxation responses to isoproterenol and salbutamol were similar in both groups, while BRL 37344 appeared to produce a greater relaxant effect in the hypercholesterolemic rats. Also, the inhibitory effects of potassium channel inhibitors on relaxation responses were comparable among the groups. The cystometric findings revealed that threshold and basal pressure values were higher in the hypercholesterolemia group compared with controls. We showed that hypercholesterolemia leads to greater relaxation responses to isoproterenol, appears to impair the braking function of M2 cholinergic receptors on adrenoceptor-induced relaxations in the isolated detrusor muscle, and affects the voiding function in rats.

Abstract
In this multicentre study, which is the largest case series ever reported, we aimed to describe the features of tularaemia to provide detailed information. We retrospectively included 1034 patients from 41 medical centres. Before the definite diagnosis of tularaemia, tonsillitis (n = 653, 63%) and/or pharyngitis (n = 146, 14%) were the most frequent preliminary diagnoses. The most frequent clinical presentations were oropharyngeal (n = 832, 85.3%), glandular (n = 136, 13.1%) and oculoglandular (n = 105, 10.1%) forms. In 987 patients (95.5%), the lymph nodes were reported to be enlarged, most frequently at the cervical chain jugular (n = 599, 58%), submandibular (n = 401, 39%), and periauricular (n = 55, 5%). Ultrasound imaging showed hyperechoic and hypoechoic patterns (59% and 25%, respectively). Granulomatous inflammation was the most frequent histological finding (56%). The patients were previously given antibiotics for 1176 episodes, mostly with β-lactam/β-lactamase inhibitors (n = 793, 76%). Antituberculosis medications were provided in seven (2%) cases. The patients were given rational antibiotics for tularaemia after the start of symptoms, with a mean of 26.8 ± 37.5 days. Treatment failure was considered to have occurred in 495 patients (48%). The most frequent reasons for failure were the production of suppuration in the lymph nodes after the start of treatment (n = 426, 86.1%), the formation of new lymphadenomegalies under treatment (n = 146, 29.5%), and persisting complaints despite 2 weeks of treatment (n = 77, 15.6%). Fine-needle aspiration was performed in 521 patients (50%) as the most frequent drainage method. In conclusion, tularaemia is a long-lasting but curable disease in this part of the world. However, the treatment strategy still needs optimization.

Abstract
Brucellosis is a zoonotic disease that primarily affects the reticuloendothelial system. But, the extent of liver damage in due course of the disease is unclear. This study included 325 brucellosis patients with significant hepatobiliary involvement identified with microbiological analyses from 30 centers between 2000 and 2013. The patients with ≥5 times of the upper limit of normal for aminotransferases, total bilirubin level ≥2 mg/dl or local liver lesions were enrolled. Clinical hepatitis was detected in 284 patients (87.3 %) and cholestasis was detected in 215 (66.1 %) patients. Fatigue (91 %), fever (86 %), sweating (83 %), arthralgia (79 %), and lack of appetite (79 %) were the major symptoms. Laboratory tests showed anemia in 169 (52 %), thrombocytopenia in 117 (36 %), leukopenia in 81 (25 %), pancytopenia in 42 (13 %), and leukocytosis in 20 (6 %) patients. The most commonly used antibiotic combinations were doxycycline plus an aminoglycoside (n = 73), doxycycline plus rifampicin (n = 71), doxycycline plus rifampicin and an aminoglycoside (n = 27). The duration of ALT normalization differed significantly in three treatment groups (p < 0.001). The use of doxycycline and an aminoglycoside in clinical hepatitis showed better results compared to doxycycline and rifampicin or rifampicin, aminoglycoside, doxycycline regimens (p < 0.05). However, the length of hospital stay did not differ significantly between these three combinations (p > 0.05). During the follow-up, treatment failure occurred in four patients (1 %) and relapse was seen in three patients (0.9 %). Mortality was not observed. Hepatobiliary involvement in brucellosis has a benign course with suitable antibiotics and the use of doxycycline and an aminoglycoside regimen seems a better strategy in select patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of magnesium administered before induction on the hemodynamic response and QT dispersion (QTd) related with intubation in hypertensive patients and to compare it with lidocaine. METHODS Patients with essential hypertension who were under ≤ 65 years old, scheduled for elective surgery with a Mallampati score of I-II were included in the study. Patients were randomly divided into three groups; group M (n = 20) received magnesium sulfate, group L was prescribed lidocaine, and group C (control group) received saline. Standard 12-lead ECG readings were taken before the induction of anesthesia and at the first and fifth minutes following intubation. RESULTS There were no statistically significant differences between the groups in terms of age, sex and demographic characteristics. There was no significant difference in the QT interval values before induction and 5 minutes after intubation in all groups. In group M, QTd values were significantly lower at the first and fifth minutes than before induction. There were no statistically significant differences in QTd values at different times in group L and group C. CONCLUSION QTd is not increased during tracheal intubation in hypertensive patients so there is no need for magnesium sulfate for these patients. But as QTd has been shown to increase during tracheal intubation for coronary artery disease patients, magnesium sulfate might be useful for those patients although future studies are required to confirm this statement.

Abstract
This study compares the bond strength of resin cement and yttrium-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystalline (Y-TZP) ceramic with different surface conditioning methods. Two hundred presintered Y-TZP ceramic specimens were prepared, sintered (4 × 4 × 4 mm), and randomly assigned to four equal groups as control (C, no conditioning); airborne particle abraded (APA, air abrasion with 11 μm Al2O3); tribochemical silica coating/silane coupling system (TSC, Rocatec, air abrasion with 110 μm Al2O3, 30 μm silica-coated Al2O3 and silane); and laser (L, Er:YAG laser irradiation treated at a power setting of 200 mJ). After specimen preparation, composite resin cylinders were prepared and cemented with resin cements (Clearfil Esthetic, Panavia F 2.0, Rely X-U100, Super Bond C&B, and Multilink Automix) on the ceramic surfaces and kept in an incubator at 37°C for 60 days. All specimens were tested for shear bond strength with a universal testing machine, and fractured surfaces were evaluated by environmental scanning electron microscopy. Statistical analysis was performed using Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U-tests (α=0.05). The bond strengths for C and L groups were not significantly different according to adhesive resin cement. APA and TSC resulted in increased bond strength for Panavia F 2.0 and Rely X-U100 resin cements. Additionally, TSC presented higher bond strength with Multilink Automix. Adhesive fracture between the ceramic and resin cement was the most common failure. Complete cohesive fracture at the ceramic or composite cylinders was not observed. Regardless of the adhesive resin cement used, laser treatment did not improve resin bond strength.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To demonstrate the pure effect of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) on cardiac autonomic function (CAF) using heart rate turbulence (HRT) parameters. PATIENTS AND METHODS A total of 64 patients with OSAS and 30 age- and gender-matched healthy subjects were enrolled. All subjects had normal coronary arteries and were free from diabetes mellitus (DM) and hypertension (HT). The HRT parameters (TO, turbulence onset; TS, turbulence slope) were obtained from 24-h ambulatory electrocardiogram (ECG) recordings. HRT parameters were compared between groups, and the relationship between HRT and the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) was examined. RESULTS No between-group differences were found in age or gender. Mean TO was significantly higher in the OSAS group than in healthy controls (0.89 ± 0.5, -0.08 ± 0.26; p < 0.001; respectively). The mean TS did not differ between the two groups (2.81 ± 3.06 versus 3.14 ± 2.33; p = 0.212). The AHI was positively correlated with TO (r = 0.845, p < 0.001). The multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that after adjustment for other variables, TO was a significant and independent predictor of AHI, OR 2.394 (95% CI: 1.596-3.591). CONCLUSIONS HRT (TO in particular) is correlated with AHI. Thus, impaired HRT may be an important factor underlying the occurrence of arrhythmia and sudden cardiac death in patients with OSAS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This retrospective study aimed to investigate the diagnostic relation between the mean platelet volume (MPV) and supraventricular tachyarrhythmia (SVT) in patient with documented atrial tachyarrhythmia in the emergency department (ED). METHODS Two study groups were compared; a SVT group with arrive at the ED with documented SVT (n=122) and 100 healthy adult without any palpitation symptom, arrhythmic disease, and with normal physical examination results that were brought for checkups to the cardiology polyclinic were classified as control group. Blood samples were obtained from all patients for determining the hematologic counts and MPV during first hour in ED period. RESULTS In terms of the focus of the study, hemoglobin, neutrophil count, mean cell volume (MCV), red cell distribution width (RDW), platelet, white blood cell (WBC), and lymphocyte counts were similar in both group (p>0.05). MPV in the SVT group was significantly higher than in the control group (9.12 ± 1.22 flvs 8.64 ± 0.89 fl, p<0.001). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that just MPV was independent predictor of SVT in patients with palpitation in ED (odds ratio [OR] 8.497, 95% confidence interval (6.181 to 12.325), p=0.012). CONCLUSION The present study described that MPV is helpful parameter for the diagnosis of SVT in emergency department, for the first time in the literature.

Abstract
Most of the anatomical, physiological and neurochemical gender-related differences in the brain occur prenatally. The sexual differences in the brain are affected by sex steroid hormones, which play important roles in the differentiation of neuroendocrine system and behavior. Testosterone, estrogen and dihydrotestosterone are the main steroid hormones responsible for the organization and sexual differentiation of brain structures during early development. The structural and behavioral differences in the female and male brains are observed in many animal species; however, these differences are variable between species. Animal and human (in vivo imaging and postmortem) studies on sex differences in the brain have shown many differences in the local distribution of the cortex, the gray-white matter ratio, corpus callosum, anterior commissure, hypothalamus, bed nucleus of the stria terminalis, limbic system and neurotransmitter systems. This review aims to evaluate the anatomical, physiological and neurochemical differences in the female and male brains and to assess the effect of prenatal exposure to sex steroid hormones on the developing brain.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The gynecological laparoscopic surgery requires pneumoperitoneum (PP) with CO2 gas insufflation. CO2 PP may influence cardiac automic function (CAF). This study was conducted to assess its significance and the prolonged effects of CO2 PP on the activity of the cardiac autonomic function 24 hours after the operation by heart rate turbulence (HRT) and heart rate variability (HRV), first time in the literature. PATIENTS AND METHODS Fifty patients scheduled for elective gynecologic laparoscopy were evaluated. The patients had no preexisting lung or heart disease or pathologic lung function. Conventional general anesthesia with midazolam, propofol, fentanyl, rocuronium, and sevoflurane was administered. ECG recordings were carried out between before 4 h from surgery and the beginning of anesthesia (T1), induction of PP and CO2 evacuation (T2) and a 24-h period postoperatively (T3). The Holter recordings of all patients were analyzed by HRT and HRV. RESULTS There were significant reductions in in HRV and HRT parameters peri-op period compared to the pre-op values (p < 0.05). In the first 3 h of post-op period, were calculated all HRT and some HRV (SDNN, LF) parameters were also found to be significantly reduced than the values of pre-op period (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS This study described adverse effects of CO2 PP on cardiac autonomic regulation in the early postoperative period according to the long-term HRV and HRT frequency analysis, for the first time in the literature. The early postoperative monitorization may supply efficacious information for arrhythmic complications.

Abstract
AIM Paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia (PSVT) has been shown to be associated with poor outcome in psychological status and quality of life. This study aimed to assess the quality-of-life and anxiety in patients with PSVT and to investigate the influence of radiofrequency ablation (RFA) treatment on these parameters. MATERIALS AND METHODS Fifty patients with newly diagnosed PSVT with electrophysiologic study and treated with RFA, were enrolled in the study and 50 healthy age-and sex-matched individuals. The brief version of World Health Organization Quality of Life Scale and the state-trait anxiety inventory were administered to controls and all patients before and three months after the RFA procedure. RESULTS At baseline, in comparison with the control group, the patients with PSVT exhibited greater anxiety average scores (p < 0.05). After RFA procedure, the patients with PSVT exhibited significant improvement in anxiety, quality of life and health satisfaction scores. Statistically significant difference between the controls and the patients in respect to state and trait anxiety average scores disappeared after treatment (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS In this study, normalization of anxiety and quality of life is associated with RFA treatment for patients with PSVT. This finding need to be confirmed by larger scale clinical trials with long-term quality of life follow-up in higher number of patients.

Abstract
To investigate a possible relation between hypercholesterolemia and detrusor smooth muscle function, we studied the contractile response to potassium challenge, carbachol (CCh), and the components of CCh-induced contractile mechanism in high-cholesterol diet-fed rats. Adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed with standard (control group, N = 17) or 4 % cholesterol diet (hypercholesterolemia group (HC), N = 16) for 4 weeks. Spontaneous contractions of detrusor muscle strips and their responses to potassium chloride (KCl) or cumulative dose-contraction curves to CCh were recorded. The effects of muscarinic receptor antagonists (methoctramin and/or 4-diphenylacetoxy-N-methylpiperidine), L-type Ca(+2) channel blocker (nifedipine), and/or rho-kinase inhibitor Y-27632 were investigated. Blood cholesterol level was increased in the HC group with no sign of atherosclerosis. The KCl-induced detrusor smooth muscle contractions were higher in HC, whereas spontaneous and CCh-induced responses were similar in both groups. Preincubation with receptor antagonist for M(3) but not for M(2) attenuated contraction significantly, shifting the dose-response curve to the right. This response was similar in both groups. Among two effector mechanisms of M(3)-mediated detrusor smooth muscle contraction, rho-kinase pathway was not affected by hypercholesterolemia, whereas blockade of L-type Ca(+2) channels potently reduced contractions. The results of this study point out a relation between hypercholesterolemia and contractile mechanism of detrusor smooth muscle likely to change urinary bladder function, via altering L-type Ca(+2) channels. Taken together with escalating incidence of hypercholesterolemia and lower urinary tract symptoms, it is a field which deserves to be investigated further.

AIM To investigate the relationship between severity of illness and hospitalization with the presence of leukocyturia and bacteriuria in outpatients with heart failure (HF). PATIENTS AND METHODS Four hundred three patients admitted with the diagnosis of HF to cardiology outpatient clinic were included in this study. According to New York Heart Association (NYHA) classification, the patients were divided into two groups to be group A (decompensated) as stage 3 or 4 and group B as stage 1 or 2 (compensated HF). All subjects underwent standard 12-lead ECG and echocardiography. In all patients, full blood, biochemical tests as liver and kidney function tests, full urinary analysis (FUA) and thyroid function tests were analyzed. Mid-stream urine for culture was taken for the leukocytes number > or =5 mm3. RESULTS The mean leukocyte number (MLN) in urine of patients was 16.56 +/- 13.63 in Group A and was 3.74 +/- 5.31 in Group B (p < 0.000). The moderately positive correlation was found between the MLN and NHYA class in all patients (r = 0.526; p < 0.000). In receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis, the optimal cut-off value of leukocytes in urinalysis to predict hospitalization of CHF was > or =5, with 76.1% sensitivity and 75.7% specificity (area under the curve 0.825, 95% confidence interval 0.781 to 0.862, p = 0.000). CONCLUSIONS We found that the numbers of leukocytes in urinalysis of hospitalized patients with HF were significantly higher than non-hospitalized persons. Also, number of leukocyte in urinalysis was positively correlated with NYHA class of HF patients. Namely, leukocyturia may be an indicator of decompensations in HF patients.
