Abstract
OBJECTIVES To determine the safety and efficacy of anifrolumab in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) classified based on the Lupus Low Disease Activity State (LLDAS) in real-world clinical practice. METHODS This retrospective observational study involved SLE patients who started anifrolumab therapy. The primary end point was the retention rate over 26 weeks after initiating anifrolumab therapy; 45 patients followed up for 12 weeks or longer were analyzed in the following groups to determine the safety and efficacy up to week 12 after treatment initiation: 1) non-LLDAS achievement group and 2) minor flare group. Safety and efficacy were compared between the minor flare group and the standard of care (SoC) group (treated by adding glucocorticoids (GCs) or immunosuppressants) after adjustment with inverse probability of treatment weighting using propensity score (PS-IPTW). RESULTS The retention rate of anifrolumab was 89.7% at week 26.The LLDAS achievement rates at week 12 were 42.9% and 66.7% in the non-LLDAS achievement and minor flare groups, respectively. In both groups, GC doses and SELENA-SLEDAI score significantly decreased. When the anifrolumab group with minor flare was compared with the SoC group or the GC dose increase group, the GC dose and SLEDAI score were significantly lower in the anifrolumab group than in both groups; there was no significant difference in LLDAS achievement. CONCLUSIONS At week 26 after initiating anifrolumab therapy, ∼90% patients remained on therapy. Anifrolumab might lower disease activity without initiating GCs and reduce GC doses, especially in patients who experience minor flares after LLDAS achievement.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To elucidate the differential effects of biological/target synthesized DMARDs (b/tsDMARDs) on bone metabolism in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in a real-world cohort. METHODS This was a multicentre prospective observational study of RA patients enrolled at the time of 1st b/tsDMARDs administration. Bone mineral density (BMD) and bone turnover markers (BTMs) were measured during the 52-week observation. The study was designed to enrol all eligible RA patients. The end-points were differences in changes in BMD according to b/tsDMARD type, and the correlation between BMD and BTMs. RESULTS A total of 1,164 patients were enrolled in this study. b/tsDMARDs improved RA disease activity from mean CDAI 25.5 at baseline to 4.5 at week 26. Patients not receiving anti-osteoporotic agents (anti-OP) at baseline with no history of fracture experienced a significant decrease in both femoral neck (F: mean 0.666-0.655 g/cm3) and radial (R: 0.518-0.514) BMD at week 26. Despite maintaining low CDAI levels during weeks 26-52 (5.3-4.4), there was a continued decline in BMD (F: 0.653, R: 0.509. Weeks 52). None of b/tsDMARDs type preserved BMD. Conversely, patients receiving anti-OP at baseline maintained stable BMD throughout the study (Weeks 0/26/52. F: 0.551/0.551/0.555, R: 0.415/0.416/0.415). Although BTMs were changed by b/tsDMARDs, the changes were unrelated to those in BMD. CONCLUSION Our study suggested the progression of osteoporosis in RA patients during b/tsDMARDs treatment without anti-OP. BTMs may not reflect BMD change. Regular monitoring of BMD in RA should be considered for early management of osteoporosis.

Abstract
Across phyla, species-specific vocalizations are used by males to attract females. Functional analyses of the neural circuitry underlying behavior have been challenging, particularly in vertebrates. However, using an ex vivo brain preparation that produces fictive vocalizations, we previously identified anatomically distinct fast and slow central pattern generators (CPGs) that drive the fast and slow clicks of male courtship calls in male African clawed frogs, Xenopus laevis. To gain insight into the evolution of neural circuits underlying species-specific courtship calls, we extended this approach to four additional species, X. amieti, X. cliivi, X. petersii, and X. tropicalis, by developing ex vivo brain preparation from which fictive vocalizations are elicited in response to a chemical or electrical stimulus. We found that even though the courtship calls of different Xenopus species vary in their click rates and duration, the CPGs used to generate clicks are conserved across species. The fast CPGs found in male X. laevis, which critically rely on reciprocal connections between the parabrachial nucleus and the nucleus ambiguus, are conserved among species that produce fast clicks. Similarly, the slow CPGs found in the caudal brainstem of male X. laevis are shared among species that produce slow clicks. In addition, our results suggest that testosterone plays a role in organizing fast CPGs in fast-click species, but it does not appear to have the same effect in slow-click species. Moreover, we demonstrate that, unlike other vestigial neural circuits that remain latent, fast CPGs are not inherited by all species. Instead, they are possessed only by the species that produce fast clicks. The results suggest that species-specific calls of the genus Xenopus have evolved by utilizing conserved slow and/or fast CPGs inherited by each species. Fast and slow CPGs are broadly tuned to generate fast or slow clicks, and the organization of the former appears to be regulated by testosterone in a species-specific manner.

Abstract
Objective To compare the outcome of various treatment de-escalation regimens in patients with RA who achieved sustained remission. Methods At period 1, 436 RA patients who were treated with MTX and bDMARDs and had maintained DAS28(ESR) at <2.6 were divided into five groups based on shared patient/physician decision-making; continuation, dose reduction and discontinuation of MTX or bDMARDs. At end of year 1, patients who achieved DAS28(ESR) <3.2 were allowed to enrol in period 2 for treatment using the de-escalation regimens for another year. The primary and secondary endpoints were the proportion of patients with DAS28(ESR) <2.6 at year 1 and 2, respectively. Results Based on shared decision-making, 81.4% elected de-escalation of treatment and 48.4% selected de-escalation of MTX. At end of period 1, similar proportions of patients maintained DAS28(ESR) <2.6 (continuation, 85.2%; MTX dose reduction, 79.0%; MTX-discontinuation, 80.0%; bDMARD dose reduction, 73.9%), although the rate was significantly different between the continuation and bDMARD-discontinuation. At end of period 2, similar proportions of patients of the MTX groups maintained DAS28(ESR) <2.6 (continuation or de-escalation), but the rates were significantly lower in the bDMARD-discontinuation group. However, half of the latter group satisfactorily discontinued bDMARDs. Adverse events were numerically lower in MTX and bDMARD-de-escalation groups during period 1 and 2, compared with the continuation group. Conclusions After achieving sustained remission by combination treatment of MTX/bDMARDs, disease control was achieved comparably by continuation, dose reduction or discontinuation of MTX and dose reduction of bDMARDs at end of year 1. Subsequent de-escalation of MTX had no impacts on disease control but decreased adverse events in year 2.

Abstract
In this study, hydrogen boride films are fabricated by ion-exchange treatment on magnesium diboride (MgB2) films under ambient temperature and pressure. We prepared oriented MgB2 films on strontium titanate (SrTiO3) substrates using pulsed laser deposition (PLD). Subsequently, these films were treated with ion exchangers in acetonitrile solution. TOF-SIMS analysis evidenced that hydrogen species were introduced into the MgB2 films by using two types of ion exchangers: proton exchange resin and formic acid. According to the HAXPES analysis, negatively charged boron species were preserved in the films after the ion-exchange treatment. In addition, the FT-IR analysis suggested that B-H bonds were formed in the MgB2 films following the ion-exchange treatment. The ion-exchange treatment using formic acid was more efficient compared to the resin treatment; with respect to the amount of hydrogen species introduced into the MgB2 films. These ion-exchanged films exhibited photoinduced hydrogen release as observed in a powder sample. Based on the present study, we expect to be able to control the morphology and hydrogen content of hydrogen boride thin films by optimising the ion-exchange treatment process, which will be useful for further studies and device applications.

Abstract
Understanding the neural basis of behavior is a challenging task for technical reasons. Most methods of recording neural activity require animals to be immobilized, but neural activity associated with most behavior cannot be recorded from an anesthetized, immobilized animal. Using amphibians, however, there has been some success in developing in vitro brain preparations that can be used for electrophysiological and anatomical studies. Here, we describe an ex vivo frog brain preparation from which fictive vocalizations (the neural activity that would have produced vocalizations had the brain been attached to the muscle) can be elicited repeatedly. When serotonin is applied to the isolated brains of male and female African clawed frogs, Xenopus laevis, laryngeal nerve activity that is a facsimile of those that underlie sex-specific vocalizations in vivo can be readily recorded. Recently, this preparation was successfully used in other species within the genus including Xenopus tropicalis and Xenopus victorianus This preparation allows a variety of techniques to be applied including extracellular and intracellular electrophysiological recordings and calcium imaging during vocal production, surgical and pharmacological manipulation of neurons to evaluate their impact on motor output, and tract tracing of the neural circuitry. Thus, the preparation is a powerful tool with which to understand the basic principles that govern the production of coherent and robust motor programs in vertebrates.

Abstract
Objective To estimate the relationship between serum TNFα, IL-6, and serum CZP levels and the clinical response to CZP in RA patients in the TSUBAME study. Methods One hundred patients with RA who received CZP were enrolled and multiple clinical parameters, serum TNFα, IL-6, and CZP levels, were assessed at 0, 24, and 48 h and 12 weeks after first administration of CZP. Results The CZP therapy significantly improved the DAS28(ESR) at 12 weeks. Serum TNFα and IL-6 levels significantly decreased from baseline at 24 h after the first administration of CZP. Serum TNFα levels at baseline were not related to clinical parameters at baseline and improvement in DAS28(ESR) at week 12 of the CZP therapy. However, serum levels of CZP at 24 h were strongly and negatively correlated with TNFα levels at 24 h, which were negatively correlated with improved rate in DAS28(ESR) at week 12. Only serum levels of TNFα, but not IL-6, at 24 h had a negative correlation with achievement of DAS28(ESR)<2.6 at week 12 by the multivariate analysis (odds ratio 0.01, 95% confidence interval 0.04e−2–0.22, p < 0.01). A receiver operating characteristic analysis was conducted to estimate the achievement of DAS28(ESR)<2.6 at week 12 after the CZP therapy and cut-off value of 0.76 pg/ml for serum levels of TNFα at 24 h was yielded (area under the curve=0.75). DAS28(ESR)<2.6 was achieved at week 12 significantly more patients with lower serum TNF levels (≦0.76 pg/ml) at 24 h than those with higher TNF levels. Conclusions CZP was highly effective in RA patients who had low serum TNFα levels at 24 h after the initial administration of CZP. Therefore, we propose that serum TNFα levels at 24 h could serve as a biomarker predicting effectiveness to CZP at week 12 in patients with RA. Abstract
Background:To increase the remission rate of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), it is necessary to determine the efficacy of the tumor necrosis factor (TNF) inhibitor as early as possible. Moreover, the response to certolizumab pegol (CZP) at 12 weeks has been reported to predict its long-term efficacy.Objectives:As part of a prospective single-center observational study (TSUBAME study), we prospectively enrolled patients to be treated with CZP in our institution to evaluate its effectiveness and safety starting at 24 hours after the first dose in clinical settings, while recording blood CZP concentrations and biomarkers over time to examine their correlation with clinical effects.Methods:One hundred patients with RA and inadequate response to MTX who received CZP were enrolled in the TSUBAME study. The changes in serum TNFα, IL-6, and CZP levels at 24 hours after first administration of CZP were measured, and the correlation between serum biomarkers and clinical response was determined.Results:At 24 hours after CZP initiation, significant improvement was observed in the disease activity (baseline and 24 h: 5.4 ± 1.3, 5.0 ± 1.3, respectively, p < 0.01), which was maintained until week 12. (baseline and 12 w: 5.4 ± 1.3, 3.3 ± 1.4, respectively, p < 0.01). Serum TNFα and IL-6 levels significantly decreased at 24 hours after first administration of CZP compared to baseline. No correlation was found between TNFα and IL-6 levels at baseline and the clinical response. According to univariate analysis, low serum TNFα and IL-6 levels and high CZP levels at 24 hours were associated with DAS28 (ESR) remission at 12 weeks. According to multivariate analysis, low serum TNFα levels at 24 hours were significantly associated with DAS28 (ESR) remission at 12 weeks (OR 0.05, 95%CI 0.01, 0.75, p = 0.03). Based on these findings, an ROC curve was created using remission according to the DAS28 (ESR) at week 12 as a dependent variable and TNFα concentration at 24 hours as an independent variable, resulting in a cut-off value of 0.76 pg/ml. From this result, the TNFα concentration at 24 hours was divided into 2 groups according to this cut-off, and the rates of remission according to the DAS28 (ESR) at week 12 were compared. In the group with TNFα concentration at 24 hours below the cut-off value, the rate of remission according to the DAS28 (ESR) at week 12 was significantly higher than in the group with TNFα concentration at 24 hours above the cut-off value (below the cut-off: above the cut-off = 56.3%: 21.6%, p < 0.001). Between the group that achieved remission according to the DAS28(ESR) and the group that did not achieve remission at week 12, there was almost no difference in the distribution of TNFα concentrations at baseline; however, the distribution of TNFα concentrations at 24 hours was lower in the group that achieved remission.Conclusion:CZP was effective where serum TNFα was strongly neutralized within 24 hours. These results suggest that low serum TNFα levels at 24 hours after first administration of CZP may predict the effectiveness of CZP. To increase the remission rate in RA, it is necessary to determine the effectiveness of the molecular targeted drugs used at an early point, in addition to how rapid the onset of action is. CZP is extremely fast-acting, and its effectiveness can be predicted as early as 24 hours after the first dose, suggesting that it may be possible to determine the effectiveness early.Acknowledgments:The authors thank Ms. M. Abstract
Identification and characterization of neuronal cell classes in motor circuits are essential for understanding the neural basis of behavior. It is a challenging task, especially in a non-genetic-model organism, to identify cell-specific expression of functional macromolecules. Here, we performed constellation pharmacology, calcium imaging of dissociated neurons to pharmacologically identify functional receptors expressed by vocal neurons in adult male and female African clawed frogs, Xenopus laevis. Previously we identified a population of vocal neurons called fast trill neurons (FTNs) in the amphibian parabrachial nucleus (PB) that express N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptors and GABA and/or glycine receptors. Using constellation pharmacology, we identified four cell classes of putative fast trill neurons (pFTNs, responsive to both NMDA and GABA/glycine applications). We discovered that some pFTNs responded to the application of substance P (SP), acetylcholine (ACh), or both. Electrophysiological recordings obtained from FTNs using an ex vivo preparation verified that SP and/or ACh depolarize FTNs. Bilateral injection of ACh, SP, or their antagonists into PBs showed that ACh receptors are not sufficient but necessary for vocal production, and SP receptors play a role in shaping the morphology of vocalizations. Additionally, we discovered that the PB of adult female X. laevis also contains all the subclasses of neurons at a similar frequency as in males, despite their sexually distinct vocalizations. These results reveal novel neuromodulators that regulate X. laevis vocal production and demonstrate the power of constellation pharmacology in identifying the neuronal subtypes marked by functional expression of cell-specific receptors in non-genetic-model organisms.NEW & NOTEWORTHY Molecular profiles of neurons are critical for understanding the neuronal functions, but their identification is challenging especially in non-genetic-model organisms. Here, we characterized the functional expression of membrane macromolecules in vocal neurons of African clawed frogs, Xenopus laevis, using a technique called constellation pharmacology. We discovered that receptors for acetylcholine and/or substance P are expressed by some classes of vocal neurons, and their activation plays a role in the production of normal vocalizations.

Abstract
Objectives: To determine the rate and factors associated with remission (disease activity score (DAS) 28-erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) of <2.6) during a 5-year follow-up after the discontinuation of adalimumab (ADA) in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA).Methods: 75 patients who had been treated with ADA + methotrexate (MTX) and maintained DAS28-ESR <2.6 for at least 6 months were enrolled. Among them, 52 patients discontinued ADA, and 46 patients completed a 5-year follow-up.Results: During the 5 years, 11 patients had DAS28-ESR <2.6. In 15 patients with DAS28-ESR <3.2, no significant changes were found in the health assessment questionnaire disability index (HAQ-DI) and modified total Sharp score (mTSS). When comparing patients with DAS28-ESR ≤1.61 versus 1.61 <DAS28-ESR <2.6, 50% and 15% of the two groups demonstrated sustained remission, respectively. Remission was more common in patients with shorter disease duration (≤2 years) than those with longer duration (>2 years). Among 31 patients who experienced flare, ADA was restarted in 24 patients, and 17 patients of these achieved DAS28-ESR <3.2 within 1-year.Conclusion: During the 5-year ADA-free period, remission rate was persistent in 21% of the patients. ADA-free remission was possible especially in patients with deeper remission (DAS28-ESR ≤1.61) and shorter disease duration (≤2 years).

Abstract
The low-lying isomeric state of ^{229}Th provides unique opportunities for high-resolution laser spectroscopy of the atomic nucleus. We determine the energy of this isomeric state by taking the absolute energy difference between the excitation energy required to populate the 29.2-keV state from the ground state and the energy emitted in its decay to the isomeric excited state. A transition-edge sensor microcalorimeter was used to measure the absolute energy of the 29.2-keV γ ray. Together with the cross-band transition energy (29.2 keV→ground) and the branching ratio of the 29.2-keV state measured in a recent study, the isomer energy was determined to be 8.30±0.92 eV. Our result is in agreement with the latest measurements based on different experimental techniques, which further confirms that the isomeric state of ^{229}Th is in the laser-accessible vacuum ultraviolet range.

Abstract
Abstract
The labeling of foods containing material derived from crustaceans such as shrimp and crab is to become mandatory in Japan because of increases in the number of allergy patients. To ensure proper labeling, 2 novel sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kits for the determination of crustacean protein in processed foods, the N kit (Nissui Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd, Ibaraki, Japan) and the M kit (Maruha Nichiro Holdings, Inc., Ibaraki, Japan), have been developed. Five types of model processed foods containing 10 and/or 11.9 g/g crustacean soluble protein were prepared for interlaboratory evaluation of the performance of these kits. The N kit displayed a relatively high level of reproducibility relative standard deviation (interlaboratory precision; 4.08.4 RSDR) and sufficient recovery (6586) for all the model processed foods. The M kit displayed sufficient reproducibility (17.620.5 RSDR) and a reasonably high level of recovery (82103). The repeatability relative standard deviation (RSDr) values regarding the detection of crustacean proteins in the 5 model foods were mostly <5.1 RSDr for the N kit and 9.9 RSDr for the M kit. In conclusion, the results of this interlaboratory evaluation suggest that both these ELISA kits would be very useful for detecting crustacean protein in processed foods.

Abstract
We experimentally and theoretically determine the magic wavelength of the (5s^{2})^{1}S_{0}-(5s5p)^{3}P_{0} clock transition of ^{111}Cd to be 419.88(14) and 420.1(7) nm. To perform Lamb-Dicke spectroscopy of the clock transition, we use narrow-line laser cooling on the ^{1}S_{0}-^{3}P_{1} transition to cool the atoms to 6 μK and load them into an optical lattice. Cadmium is an attractive candidate for optical lattice clocks because it has a small sensitivity to blackbody radiation and its efficient narrow-line cooling mitigates higher order light shifts. We calculate the blackbody shift, including the dynamic correction, to be fractionally 2.83(8)×10^{-16} at 300 K, an order of magnitude smaller than that of Sr and Yb. We also report calculations of the Cd ^{1}P_{1} lifetime and the ground state C_{6} coefficient.

Abstract
The near-Earth asteroid 162173 Ryugu, the target of the Hayabusa2 sample-return mission, is thought to be a primitive carbonaceous object. We report reflectance spectra of Ryugu's surface acquired with the Near-Infrared Spectrometer (NIRS3) on Hayabusa2, to provide direct measurements of the surface composition and geological context for the returned samples. A weak, narrow absorption feature centered at 2.72 micrometers was detected across the entire observed surface, indicating that hydroxyl (OH)-bearing minerals are ubiquitous there. The intensity of the OH feature and low albedo are similar to thermally and/or shock-metamorphosed carbonaceous chondrite meteorites. There are few variations in the OH-band position, which is consistent with Ryugu being a compositionally homogeneous rubble-pile object generated from impact fragments of an undifferentiated aqueously altered parent body.

Abstract
The central vocal pathway of the African clawed frog, Xenopus laevis, is a powerful vertebrate model to understand mechanisms underlying central pattern generation. However, fast and efficient methods of introducing exogenous genes into the neurons of adult X. laevis are currently not available. Here, we systematically tested methods of transgene delivery into adult X. laevis neurons. Although successfully used for tadpole neurons for over a decade, electroporation was not efficient in transfecting adult neurons. Similarly, adeno-associated virus (AAV) was not reliable, and lentivirus (LV) failed to function as viral vector in adult Xenopus neurons. In contrast, vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) was a fast and robust vector for adult X. laevis neurons. Although toxic to the host cells, VSV appears to be less virulent to frog neurons than they are to mice neurons. At a single cell level, infected neurons showed normal physiological properties up to 7 days post infection and vocal circuits that included infected neurons generated normal fictive vocalizations up to 9 days post infection. The relatively long time window during which the physiology of VSV-infected neurons can be studied presents an ideal condition for the use of optogenetic tools. We showed that VSV does not gain entry into myelinated axons, but is taken up by both the soma and axon terminal; this is an attractive feature that drives transgene expression in projection neurons. Previous studies showed that VSVs can spread across synapses in anterograde or retrograde directions depending on the types of glycoprotein that are encoded. However, rVSV did not spread across synapses in the Xenopus central nervous system. The successful use of VSV as a transgene vector in amphibian brains not only allows us to exploit the full potential of the genetic tools to answer questions central to understanding central pattern generation, but also opens the door to other research programs that focus on non-genetic model organisms to address unique questions.

Abstract
We developed a fast X-ray detector system for nuclear resonant scattering (NRS) experiments. Our system employs silicon avalanche photo-diode (Si-APD) as a fast X-ray sensor. The system is able to acquire both timing and energy of a single X-ray photon simultaneously in a high rate condition, 106 counts per second for one Si-APD. The performance of the system was investigated in SPring-8, a synchrotron radiation facility in Japan. Good time resolution of 120 ps (FWHM) was achieved with a slight tail distribution in the time spectrum by a level of 10-9 at 1 ns apart from the peak. Using this system, we successfully observed the NRS from the 26.27-keV level of mercury-201, which has a half-life of 630(50) ps. We also demonstrated the reduction of background events caused by radioactive decays in a radioactive sample by discriminating photon energy.

Abstract
The vertebrate hindbrain includes neural circuits that govern essential functions including breathing, blood pressure and heart rate. Hindbrain circuits also participate in generating rhythmic motor patterns for vocalization. In most tetrapods, sound production is powered by expiration and the circuitry underlying vocalization and respiration must be linked. Perception and arousal are also linked; acoustic features of social communication sounds-for example, a baby's cry-can drive autonomic responses. The close links between autonomic functions that are essential for life and vocal expression have been a major in vivo experimental challenge. Xenopus provides an opportunity to address this challenge using an ex vivo preparation: an isolated brain that generates vocal and breathing patterns. The isolated brain allows identification and manipulation of hindbrain vocal circuits as well as their activation by forebrain circuits that receive sensory input, initiate motor patterns and control arousal. Advances in imaging technologies, coupled to the production of Xenopus lines expressing genetically encoded calcium sensors, provide powerful tools for imaging neuronal patterns in the entire fictively behaving brain, a goal of the BRAIN Initiative. Comparisons of neural circuit activity across species (comparative neuromics) with distinctive vocal patterns can identify conserved features, and thereby reveal essential functional components.

Abstract
Abstract
PURPOSE: Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is an adverse effect of many commonly used chemotherapeutic agents, including taxanes. However, there is currently no established effective prophylactic management for CIPN. Thus, we investigated the efficacy of using surgical glove (SG) compression therapy to prevent nanoparticle albumin-bound-paclitaxel (nab-PTX)-induced peripheral neuropathy.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients with primary and recurrent breast cancer who received 260 mg/m2 of nab-PTX were eligible for this case-control study. The patients wore two SGs of the same size, that is, one size smaller than the size that fit, on their dominant hand for 90 minutes. They did not wear SGs on the non-dominant hand, which served as the control hand. Peripheral neuropathy was evaluated at each treatment cycle using Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events (CTCAE) version 4.0 and the Patient Neurotoxicity Questionnaire (PNQ). The temperatures of each fingertip of the compression SG-protected and control hands were measured by using thermography.
RESULTS: Between August 2013 and January 2016, 43 patients were enrolled, and 42 were evaluated. As shown in Table 1, the overall occurrence of ≥grade 2 sensory and motor peripheral neuropathy according to the CTCAE was significantly lower in the SG-protected hands than in the control hands (76.1% vs. 21.4% and 57.1% vs. 26.2%, respectively, p < 0.0001). The PNQ results showed that the incidence of ≥grade 4 neuropathy was significantly higher in the control hands than in the SG-protected hands in terms of both sensory and motor neurotoxicity (p < 0.0001, Table 2). As the treatment cycles of nab-PTX increased, the mean CTCAE and PNQ grades of the control hands gradually increased. However, the SG-protected hands maintained significantly lower mean grades than the control hands over time (p < 0.0001).
No patients withdrew from this study because they could not tolerate the compression from the SGs. The mean temperature of each fingertip significantly decreased (1.42–2.60 °C) in the SG-protected hands compared to in the control hands.
CONCLUSIONS: SG compression therapy appears effective for reducing nab-PTX-induced peripheral neuropathy. The nab-PTX exposure to the peripheral nerve may be decreased because the SG decreases microvascular flow to the fingertip.

Abstract
Central pattern generators (CPGs) in the brain stem are considered to underlie vocalizations in many vertebrate species, but the detailed mechanisms underlying how motor rhythms are generated, coordinated, and initiated remain unclear. We addressed these issues using isolated brain preparations of Xenopus laevis from which fictive vocalizations can be elicited. Advertisement calls of male X. laevis that consist of fast and slow trills are generated by vocal CPGs contained in the brain stem. Brain stem central vocal pathways consist of a premotor nucleus [dorsal tegmental area of medulla (DTAM)] and a laryngeal motor nucleus [a homologue of nucleus ambiguus (n.IX-X)] with extensive reciprocal connections between the nuclei. In addition, DTAM receives descending inputs from the extended amygdala. We found that unilateral transection of the projections between DTAM and n.IX-X eliminated premotor fictive fast trill patterns but did not affect fictive slow trills, suggesting that the fast and slow trill CPGs are distinct; the slow trill CPG is contained in n.IX-X, and the fast trill CPG spans DTAM and n.IX-X. Midline transections that eliminated the anterior, posterior, or both commissures caused no change in the temporal structure of fictive calls, but bilateral synchrony was lost, indicating that the vocal CPGs are contained in the lateral halves of the brain stem and that the commissures synchronize the two oscillators. Furthermore, the elimination of the inputs from extended amygdala to DTAM, in addition to the anterior commissure, resulted in autonomous initiation of fictive fast but not slow trills by each hemibrain stem, indicating that the extended amygdala provides a bilateral signal to initiate fast trills. NEW & NOTEWORTHY Central pattern generators (CPGs) are considered to underlie vocalizations in many vertebrate species, but the detailed mechanisms underlying their functions remain unclear. We addressed this question using an isolated brain preparation of African clawed frogs. We discovered that two vocal phases are mediated by anatomically distinct CPGs, that there are a pair of CPGs contained in the left and right half of the brain stem, and that mechanisms underlying initiation of the two vocal phases are distinct.

Abstract
Anomalous solid structures formed by a thermotropic liquid crystalline polyimide (PI-LC) were investigated by thermal analysis, polarized light microscopy and x-ray analysis. It was revealed that PI-LC should undergo a phase transition from the crystalline to the isotropic phase through the smectic or nematic phase in the temperature range 277–300 °C. The PI-LC filament extruded at 280 °C, at which temperature the polymer was in liquid crystalline phase, was formed to have a structure similar to the smectic C phase, while that extruded and melt-drawn at 310 °C, at which temperature the polymer was in the isotropic phase, had a structure similar to the smectic A phase.

Abstract
1, 3-Bis(3-aminobenzoyl)benzene (BAB), 1, 3-bis(3-amino-4-phenoxybenzoyl)benzene (BAPB) and 1, 3-bis(3-amino-4-biphenoxybenzoyl)benzene (BABB) were synthesized from 1, 3-bis(3-nitro-4-chlorobenzoyl)benzene. By using these three diamines and commercially available tetracarboxylic dianhydrides such as 3, 3′, 4, 4′-benzophenone tetracarboxylic dianhydride (BTDA) and pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA), several kinds of poly(keto-imide)s were synthesized. Thermal properties and processability such as melt-flowability and solubility in organic solvents of the obtained poly(keto-imide)s were investigated by focusing on the chemical structures of their repeating structure units. Inherent viscosities of poly(keto-imide)s ranged from 0.54 to 0.75 dl g−1. These poly(keto-imide)s displayed glass transition temperatures ( Tg) between 219 and 256 °C, and only the poly(keto-imide) prepared from BAB and PMDA showed a melting point ( Tm)at 451 °C. Melt-flowabilities of these poly(keto-imide)s except for BAB/PMDA poly(keto-imide) were observed between 285 and 330 °C. The poly(keto-imide)s having bulky pendent ether groups were soluble in chloroform, 1, 1, 2-trichloroethane, N, N-dimethylacetamide and m-cresol at ambient temperature.

Abstract
Novel aromatic polyimides containing indan structure units were prepared from 5,7-diamino-1,1,4,6-tetramethylindan and various aromatic tetracarboxylic dianhydrides. The glass transition temperatures ( Tg’s) of these polyimides were not observed by differential scanning calorimetry at a temperature lower than 500 °C and the 5% weight loss temperatures ( Td5’s) of them were above 422 and 474 °C in air and nitrogen, respectively. Polyimide prepared from 5,7-diamino-1,1,4,6-tetramethylindan and 2,2-bis(3,4-dicarboxyphenyl)-1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoropropane dianhydride was soluble in organic solvents such as tetrahydrofuran, cyclopentanone, chloroform, acetone, ethyl acetate, N-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone and cresol at 20 wt% concentration at ambient temperature. The other resulting polyimides obtained from this diamine possessing an indan structure were also soluble in several organic solvents. These results indicated that polymer properties such as thermal behaviour and solubilities were influenced by the indan structure unit in a repeating structure.

Abstract
A liquid crystalline polyimide (poly[1, 3-bis[4-(4-aminophenoxy)-α, α-dimethylbenzyl]benzene pyromellitimide]: PI-LC) was blended with two kinds of thermoplastic polyimide: poly[3, 3′-(4, 4′-dioxybiphenyl)diphenylene pyromellitimide] (N-TPI) which is a semicrystalline polyimide having a melting point of 388 °C and poly[2, 2′-bis(3, 4-dicarboxyphenoxy)phenylpropane-2-phenylene bisimide] (PEI) which is an amorphous poly(etherimide) having a glass transition temperature at 220 °C. The miscibility of N-TPI and PI-LC was evaluated by DSC using enthalpy relaxation, and the phase diagram of their blend was drawn above the melting point of N-TPI. The result indicated that the PI-LC-rich blend was miscible in a wide range of compositions. However, the extruded samples of their blend, which had been prepared under a flow of high shear, showed a phase separation structure. In the other combination of PEI and PI-LC, the blend was immiscible, but at low composition of PI-LC their blend fibre showed higher tensile properties than the original PEI fibre.

Abstract
The study aims to confirm the feasibility of new oral triple combination therapy using methotrexate (MTX), mizoribine (MZR), and tacrolimus (TAC) in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) by in vitro and clinical analyses. Triple therapy with a combination of MTX, MZR, and TAC was used for an in vitro study with osteoclasts and a prospective clinical study in order to show the efficacy of these agents against refractory RA. In particular, low-dose TAC or MZR was added to treat 14 patients with RA that was resistant to MTX + MZR or MTX + TAC dual therapy. The combination of three pharmacological agents showed statistically significant differences to reduce differentiation induction and activity of osteoclasts compared with single and double agents. In clinical use, triple therapy showed a statistically significant difference in the improvement of Disease Activity Score-28-erythrocyte sedimentation rate and the Simple Disease Activity Index score at around 8 months. Additionally, the serum matrix metalloproteinase-3 level significantly decreased. No patients dropped out because of adverse effects. Based on this in vitro and prospective clinical study, oral triple therapy might be effective against refractory RA. Furthermore, this therapy might be safe and economical for clinical practice.

Abstract
Percutaneous transcatheter embolization of the testicular vein was performed on 28 patients with angiographically proven varicocele testis. In 2 patients bilateral and in 26 only the left vein was embolized using 3-, 5-, or 8-mm stainless steel coils. All patients had clinically palpable varicoceles and male infertility. The grade of varicoceles improved after embolization in 23 of 28 cases (82%). Effective sperm count increased significantly from 34.5 ± 44.6 to 65.1 ± 71.0 following embolization. However, pregnancy was achieved only in one of 28 cases. Technically, the basilic vein approach was felt to be superior to the femoral vein or jugular vein approach for this procedure.

Abstract
Novel autoantibodies against nuclear antigen of 14 kDa (NA-14)/Sjögren's syndrome nuclear antigen-1 (SSNA-1) are predominantly recognized in sera of patients with primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS). However, the detailed characteristics of the anti-NA-14 antibody remain unknown. Here, we sought to clarify the characteristics of anti-SSNA-1/NA-14 antibodies and the mechanisms of autoantibody production using sera from patients with connective tissue diseases (including pSS), autoimmune sera reacting with standard autoantigens (SS-A/Ro and/or SS-B/La, ds DNA, Scl-70 and Jo-1), and normal healthy controls (NHCs). Anti-NA-14 antibodies were predominantly recognized in sera from patients with pSS and in autoimmune sera reacting with thSS-A/Ro and/or -SS-B/Lo. Indirect immunofluorescence analysis showed that NA-14 was strongly expressed in mitotic-phase cells. Patients with pSS having anti-NA-14 antibodies exhibited significant elevation of serum IP-10 and BAFF compared to that in patients with pSS without anti-NA-14 antibodies and NHCs. Thus, our data demonstrated that anti-NA-14 antibodies could be classified as novel autoantibodies reacting with mitosis-related autoantigens predominantly recognized in pSS. Moreover, interferon-γ played an important role in the production of anti-NA-14 autoantibodies as patients with pSS having anti-NA-14 antibodies exhibited increased serum levels of IP-10 and BAFF.

Abstract
A prototype C(6+) injector using a laser ion source has been developed for a compact synchrotron dedicated to carbon ion radiotherapy. The injector consists of a laser ion source and a 4-vane radio-frequency quadrupole (RFQ) linac. Ion beams are extracted from plasma and directly injected into the RFQ. A solenoid guides the low-energy beams into the RFQ. The RFQ is designed to accelerate high-intensity pulsed beams. A structure of monolithic vanes and cavities is adopted to reduce its power consumption. In beam acceleration tests, a solenoidal magnetic field set between the laser ion source and the RFQ helped increase both the peak currents before and after the RFQ by a factor of 4.

Abstract
We present two patients developing intraoperative massive bleeding and showed ischemic changes in the electrocardiogram and circulatory collapse accompanied by severe anemia owing to the delay of red blood cell concentrate transfusion. One patient underwent hepatectomy and the other pancreaticoduodenectomy. Their lowest hemoglobin concentration was around 2 g x dl(-1), and they showed ischemic changes in the electrocardiogram and severe decreases in blood pressure. The former received compatible red blood cell concentrate and the latter received uncrossmatched same blood group red blood cell concentrate immediately, and their electrocardiogram and blood pressure quickly improved. To avoid life-threatening anemia, emergency red blood cell concentrate transfusion including compatible different blood group transfusion should be applied for intraoperative massive bleeding.

Abstract
In many flowering plants, the transition to flowering is primarily affected by seasonal changes in day length (photoperiod). An inductive photoperiod promotes flowering via synthesis of a floral stimulus, called florigen. In Arabidopsis thaliana, the FLOWERING LOCUS T (FT) protein is an essential component of florigen, which is synthesized in leaf phloem companion cells and is transported through phloem tissue to the shoot apical meristem where floral morphogenesis is initiated. However, the molecular mechanism involved in the long-distance transport of FT protein remains elusive. In this study, we characterized the classic Arabidopsis mutant fe, which is involved in the photoperiodic induction of flowering, and showed that FE encodes a phloem-specific Myb-related protein that was previously reported as ALTERED PHLOEM DEVELOPMENT. Phenotypic analyses of the fe mutant showed that FT expression is reduced in leaf phloem companion cells. In addition, the transport of FT protein from leaves to the shoot apex is impaired in the fe mutant. Expression analyses further demonstrated that FE is also required for transcriptional activation of FLOWERING LOCUS T INTERACTING PROTEIN 1 (FTIP1), an essential regulator for selective trafficking of the FT protein from companion cells to sieve elements. These findings indicate that FE plays a dual role in the photoperiodic induction of flowering: as a transcriptional activator of FT on the one hand, and its transport machinery component, FTIP1, on the other hand. Thus, FE is likely to play a role in regulating FT by coordinating FT synthesis and FT transport in phloem companion cells.

Abstract
The transverse acoustic impedance of superfluid ^{3}He was measured in the A1 and A2 phases up to 13 T to investigate the surface states in nonunitary superfluids. The temperature dependence of the impedance was much larger in the A1 phase than in the A2 phase. This nonsymmetric behavior indicates that momentum exchange with walls for spin-down surface states is quite different from that for spin-up surface states. The spin-dependent response might be a reflection of an essential feature of the nonunitary states where gap amplitudes depend on spin states. Weak-coupling theories ignore any spin-dependent processes and do not account for the nonsymmetric behavior.

Abstract
Several epidemiologic studies have suggested that oral disease is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, whether a clinically significant association exists between the 2 disorders remains controversial. Here, we investigated the association between tooth loss, as an indicator of oral disease, and arterial stiffness, as a marker of atherosclerosis, in Japanese adults. Cross-sectional data were collected for 8,124 persons aged 30 to 75 y with no history of tooth loss for noninflammatory reasons, such as orthodontic treatment, malposition, and trauma. Participants received a comprehensive dental examination and extensive in-person measurements of CVD risk factors, and arterial stiffness was evaluated using the cardio-ankle vascular index (CAVI). We examined the association between CAVI and tooth loss using general linear models with adjustment for age, sex, body mass index, smoking status, hemoglobin A1c, and a history of insulin or hypoglycemic medication depending on the model. In addition, we performed an analysis that included interaction terms of the centered variables tooth loss, sex, and age. The results of the multiple regression analysis that included the interaction terms detected that the relationship between CAVI and tooth loss was dependent on sex, with only men showing a positive correlation (β for interaction = 0.04; 95% confidence interval, 0.02-0.06). The findings from this study suggest that a linear relationship exists between tooth loss and degree of arterial stiffness and that the association differed depending on sex.

Abstract
Background. Patients with renal anemia who show a poor response to erythropoietin might have iron insufficiency. Reticulocyte hemoglobin content (CHr) was measured in hemodialysis patients, and its potential as a marker for iron status was assessed by comparing CHr with ordinary markers. Methods. Ninety-one patients receiving maintenance hemodialysis were enrolled. Venous sampling was performed twice, at a 3-month interval. During the interval, none of the patients received any iron agent and there was no alteration in their erythropoietin doses. CHr was measured with an automated blood cell counter. Simultaneously, ordinary markers for iron status, such as hematocrit (Ht), mean hemoglobin content (CH), serum iron (Fe), ferritin (Fr), and transferrin saturation (TSAT), were measured. CHr was compared with these markers. Results. CHr randed from 24.1 to 34.7 pg, with a mean of 31.0 pg. CHr correlated with CH (P < 0.001), Fr (P < 0.01), Fe (P < 0.001), and TSAT (P < 0.001), but not with Ht. When patients were divided into two groups according to the CHr : CH ratio (CHr : CH ≧ 1 and CHr : CH < 1), there was no difference in any parameter between the two groups in the first measurement. In the second measurement, done after a 3-month interval, patients with CHr : CH ≧ 1 showed significantly higher values for CHr (P < 0.001), CH (P < 0.01), Fe (P < 0.05), and TSAT (P < 0.05) than patients with CHr : CH < 1. Conclusions. It was suggested that the CHr : CH ratio would predict changes in the state of iron supply. CHr might be a potential marker for monitoring renal anemia.
