Abstract
BACKGROUND Studies have shown that the prevalence of all-variants Alzheimer's disease (AD) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD) both increase with age, even before the age of 65. However, it is not known whether their different clinical presentations all increase in prevalence with age in the same way. METHODS We studied the prevalence of the different clinical presentations of young-onset AD and FTD by 5-year age groups in a population-based study identifying all dementia patients with a diagnosis of AD and FTD and symptoms onset before age 65 in the Modena province, Italy. By using regression models of cumulative occurrences, we also estimated age-specific prevalence and compared the growth curves of the clinical presentations. RESULTS The prevalence of all-variants AD increased with age, from 18/1,000,000 in the 40-44 age group to 1411/1,000,000 in the 60-64 age group. The prevalence of all-variants FTD also increased with age, from 18/1,000,000 to 866/1,000,000. An estimation of age-specific prevalence functions of each clinical presentation showed that atypical non-amnestic AD and aphasic FTD grew the most in early ages, followed by the behavioural variant of FTD (bvFTD). Then, around the age of 60, amnestic AD took over and its age-specific prevalence continued to increase disproportionally compared to all the other clinical variants of AD and FTD, which, instead, started to decrease in prevalence. CONCLUSIONS Amnestic AD is the clinical presentation that increases the most with advancing age, followed by bvFTD, suggesting that there is a differential vulnerability to the effect of ageing within the same neurodegenerative disease.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES It is acknowledged that living in a green environment may help mental well-being and this may be especially true for vulnerable people. However, the relationship between greenness and neuropsychiatric symptoms in dementia has not been explored yet. METHODS We collected clinical, neuropsychiatric, and residential data from subjects with dementia living in the province of Modena, Northern Italy. Neuropsychiatric symptoms were measured with the Neuropsychiatry Inventory, a questionnaire administered to the caregiver who assesses the presence and severity of neuropsychiatric symptoms, including delusions, hallucinations, agitation/aggression, dysphoria/depression, anxiety, euphoria/elation, apathy/indifference, disinhibition, irritability/lability, aberrant motor behaviors, sleep disturbances, and appetite/eating changes. Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) was used as a proxy of greenness. Regression models were constructed to study the association between greenness and neuropsychiatric features. RESULTS 155 patients with dementia were recruited. We found that greenness is variably associated with the risk of having neuropsychiatric symptoms. The risk of apathy was lower with lower levels of greenness (OR = 0.42, 95% CI 0.19-0.91 for NDVI below the median value). The risk of psychosis was higher with lower levels of greenness but with more imprecise values (OR = 1.77, 95% CI 0.84-3.73 for NDVI below the median value). CONCLUSION Our results suggest a possible association between greenness and neuropsychiatric symptoms in people with dementia. If replicated in larger samples, these findings will pave the road for identifying innovative greening strategies and interventions that can improve mental health in dementia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) is a heterogeneous condition characterised by cognitive changes that do not affect everyday functioning and may represent a predementia phase. Research on the neuroanatomical correlates of cognitive tests used to diagnose MCI is heterogeneous and has mainly focused on elderly populations of patients with MCI, usually well above the age of 65. However, the effect of ageing on brain structure is known to be substantial and to affect brain-behaviour associations in older people. We explored the brain correlates of different cognitive tests in a group of young-onset MCI (i.e., with symptoms onset before the age of 65) to minimise the effect of ageing on brain-behaviour associations. METHODS Patients with a clinical diagnosis of young-onset MCI underwent extensive cognitive assessment and multimodal Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) including high-resolution T1-weighted and Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) sequences. Their scores on cognitive tests were related to measures of grey matter (GM) density and white matter (WM) integrity using, respectively, Voxel Based Morphometry (VBM) and Tract-Based Spatial Statistics (TBSS). RESULTS 104 young-onset MCI were recruited. VBM and TBSS whole-brain correlational analyses showed that between-subject variability in cognitive performance was significantly associated with regional variability in GM density and WM integrity. While associations between cognitive scores and focal GM density in our young-onset MCI group reflected the well-known lateralization of verbal and visuo-spatial abilities on the left and right hemispheres respectively, the associations between cognitive scores and WM microstructural integrity were widespread and diffusely involved most of the WM tracts in both hemispheres. CONCLUSIONS We investigated the structural neuroanatomical correlates of cognitive tests in young-onset MCI in order to minimise the effect of ageing on brain-behaviour associations.

Abstract
Introduction Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) are two phenotypes of the same neurodegenerative disease, the FTD-ALS spectrum. What determines the development of one rather than the other phenotype is still unknown. Based on the clinical observation that patients' personality seems to differ between the two phenotypes, i.e., ALS patients tend to display kind, prosocial behaviors whereas FTD patients tend to present anti-social behaviors, and that these traits are often reported as pre-existing the disease onset by caregivers, we set up to study experimentally patients' personality in their premorbid life. Methods We first tested for differences between groups, then tested the association between premorbid personality and current functional organization of the brain. Premorbid personality of a cohort of forty patients, 27 FTD and 13 ALS, was explored through the NEO Personality Inventory 3 (NEO-PI-3), which analyses the five main personality factors, completed by the caregiver with reference to patient's personality 20 years before symptoms onset (premorbid). A subgroup of patients underwent a brain MRI including structural and resting-state functional MRI (rsfMRI). Results A significant difference between FTD and ALS in premorbid personality emerged in the Openness (133.92 FTD vs. 149.84 ALS, p = 0.01) and Extraversion (136.55 FTD vs. 150.53 ALS, p = 0.04) factors. This suggests that ALS patients had been, in their premorbid life, more open to new experiences, more sociable and optimistic than FTD patients. They also showed greater functional connectivity than both FTD and a control group in the Salience resting state network, over and above differences in gray matter atrophy. Finally, there was a positive correlation between premorbid Openness and functional connectivity in the Salience network across all patients, suggesting a possible association between premorbid personality and current functional organization of the brain, irrespective of the degree of atrophy. Discussion Our proof-of-concept results suggest that premorbid personality may eventually predispose to the development of one, rather than the other, phenotype in the FTD-ALS spectrum.

Abstract
The pathogenesis of post-gastrectomy reactive hyperinsulinaemic hypoglycaemia is not yet fully clarified. Recent studies suggest an up-regulation of the intestinal glucose transporter SGLT-1 aimed to prevent carbohydrate malabsorption. The overexpression of SGLT-1 could therefore represents one of the mechanisms underlying the wide glycemic excursions found in patients after gastrectomy, but studies investigating the use of SGLT-1/SGLT-2 inhibitors in patients with post-gastrectomy reactive hyperinsulinemic hypoglycaemia are very scant in the literature. We report the case of a 37-year-old non diabetic man who frequently presented symptoms of hypoglycaemia in the postprandial period. In 2012, he underwent Roux en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) and after two years, he started to experience typical symptoms of reactive hyperinsulinaemic hypoglycaemia. We suggested healthy modifications of dietary habits and periodic follow-up visits with a dietitian. After three months, the patient still presented symptoms of reactive hypoglycaemia; we provided him with Flash Glucose Monitoring (FGM) to assess trend of glucose levels in interstitial fluid during the day and we decided to introduce canagliflozin 300 mg/day before the main meal. Hypoglycaemic events previously referred by the patient and clearly recorded by FGM completely disappeared taking canagliflozin. We found a reduction of time spent in hypoglycaemia, an improvement of glycemic variability and an increase of time in target range. It was also noted a reduction of time spent in hyperglicemia with consequent improvement of average glucose values and of glucose main indicator. This is the first report with FGM supporting a role of canagliflozin in the management of post-gastrectomy reactive hyperinsulinaemic hypoglycaemia. Our preliminary results are very limited but in line with those of the literature and showed for the first time a reduction of hypoglycaemic events and an improvement of glycemic variability through a flash glucose monitoring system. Further studies are mandatory to confirm this therapeutic opportunity.

Abstract
Research on segmentation of the hippocampus in magnetic resonance images through deep learning convolutional neural networks (CNNs) shows promising results, suggesting that these methods can identify small structural abnormalities of the hippocampus, which are among the earliest and most frequent brain changes associated with Alzheimer disease (AD). However, CNNs typically achieve the highest accuracy on datasets acquired from the same domain as the training dataset. Transfer learning allows domain adaptation through further training on a limited dataset. In this study, we applied transfer learning on a network called spatial warping network segmentation (SWANS), developed and trained in a previous study. We used MR images of patients with clinical diagnoses of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and AD, segmented by two different raters. By using transfer learning techniques, we developed four new models, using different training methods. Testing was performed using 26% of the original dataset, which was excluded from training as a hold‐out test set. In addition, 10% of the overall training dataset was used as a hold‐out validation set. Results showed that all the new models achieved better hippocampal segmentation quality than the baseline SWANS model (ps < .001), with high similarity to the manual segmentations (mean dice [best model] = 0.878 ± 0.003). The best model was chosen based on visual assessment and volume percentage error (VPE). The increased precision in estimating hippocampal volumes allows the detection of small hippocampal abnormalities already present in the MCI phase (SD = [3.9 ± 0.6]%), which may be crucial for early diagnosis.

Abstract
PURPOSE The diagnosis of vitamin D deficiency is based on the determination of total plasma 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25-OHD) concentrations, but the regulation of vitamin D 25-hydroxylation is not a major consideration and very little information is available on this activity. To check what factors could interfere with the activity of vitamin D-25-hydroxylase and thus alter the 25-OHD concentrations, we looked for potential correlations between 25-OHD and results of liver function tests in healthy adults. METHODS This single-centre study was retrospective and consisted of evaluating the correlations between 25-OHD and the activities of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and bone alkaline phosphatase (BALP) in 349 healthy subjects aged from 18 to 65 years. In particular, in Group 1 (n = 119), we looked for correlations between 25OHD and all liver function tests and in Group 2 (n = 230) the correlation between 25OHD and BALP. RESULTS In Group 1, we found no correlation between 25OHD and AST (r = - 0.03; p = 0.8), ALT (r = - 0.02; p = 0.91), GGT (r = - 0.08; p = 0.68), direct bilirubin (r = - 0.02; p = 0.89), indirect bilirubin (r = - 0.24; p = 0.21), and total bilirubin (r = - 0.24; p = 0.21) but one between 25OHD and ALP (r = - 0.2; p = 0.007); in Group 2, we found a significant negative correlation between 25-OHD and BALP (r = - 0.2; p = 0.0008). CONCLUSIONS The correlations that we found suggest that ALP and BALP might be involved in the regulation of vitamin D-25-hydroxylase activity, but further studies are mandatory to confirm our assumptions.

Abstract
The orthoquartzite Imawarì Yeuta cave hosts exceptional silica speleothems and represents a unique model system to study the geomicrobiology associated to silica amorphization processes under aphotic and stable physical-chemical conditions. In this study, three consecutive evolution steps in the formation of a peculiar blackish coralloid silica speleothem were studied using a combination of morphological, mineralogical/elemental and microbiological analyses. Microbial communities were characterized using Illumina sequencing of 16S rRNA gene and clone library analysis of carbon monoxide dehydrogenase (coxL) and hydrogenase (hypD) genes involved in atmospheric trace gases utilization. The first stage of the silica amorphization process was dominated by members of a still undescribed microbial lineage belonging to the Ktedonobacterales order, probably involved in the pioneering colonization of quartzitic environments. Actinobacteria of the Pseudonocardiaceae and Acidothermaceae families dominated the intermediate amorphous silica speleothem and the final coralloid silica speleothem, respectively. The atmospheric trace gases oxidizers mostly corresponded to the main bacterial taxa present in each speleothem stage. These results provide novel understanding of the microbial community structure accompanying amorphization processes and of coxL and hypD gene expression possibly driving atmospheric trace gases metabolism in dark oligotrophic caves.

Abstract
Background: The symptom anosognosia or unawareness of disease in dementia has mainly been studied in patients with late-onset dementia (LOD, ≥65 years), whereas little is known on whether it is also present in patients with early-onset dementia (EOD, <65 years). We aimed at investigating differences in anosognosia between LOD and EOD, by also studying its association with different clinical variants of EOD and the presence of neuropsychiatric symptoms. Methods: A total of 148 patients, 91 EOD and 57 LOD, were recruited and underwent extended clinical assessment and caregiver interview that included questionnaires aimed at measuring anosognosia and neuropsychiatric symptoms. Differences in anosognosia between EOD and LOD and between subgroups with different clinical variants were investigated, as well as correlation between anosognosia and neuropsychiatric symptoms. A regression analysis was applied to explore the association between anosognosia and development of neuropsychiatric symptoms during disease progression. Results: Median levels of anosognosia were not significantly different between EOD and LOD. Anosognosia increased overtime with disease progression and was higher in frontotemporal dementia patients or, more precisely, in frontotemporal dementia and Alzheimer's disease variants associated with involvement of the frontal lobes. Higher levels of early anosognosia were associated with higher frequency and severity of subsequent neuropsychiatric symptoms, in particular apathy, later in the course of the disease. Conclusion: Anosognosia is a frequent symptom of EOD, occurring in 94.5% of all-cause EOD, and it is associated with higher risk of developing neuropsychiatric symptoms during disease progression. Recognising anosognosia may be helpful for clinicians and families to reduce diagnostic delay and improve disease managment.

Abstract
Topological surface states usually emerge at the boundary between a topological and a conventional insulator. Their precise physical character and spatial localization depend on the complex interplay between the chemical, structural and electronic properties of the two insulators in contact. Using a lattice-matched heterointerface of single and double bilayers of β-antimonene and bismuth selenide, we perform a comprehensive experimental and theoretical study of the chiral surface states by means of microscopy and spectroscopic measurements complemented by first-principles calculations. We demonstrate that, although β-antimonene is a trivial insulator in its free-standing form, it inherits the unique symmetry-protected spin texture from the substrate via a proximity effect that induces outward migration of the topological state. This "topologization" of β-antimonene is found to be driven by the hybridization of the bands from either side of the interface.

Abstract
In this work, we aimed at developing an improved topical SLN formulation combining itraconazole delivery with a coating layer of didodecyldimethylammonium bromide, thus repurposing the drug effectiveness by synergistic skin anticancer effectiveness. In order to obtain a stable SLN formulation with small homogeneously dispersed particles, a deep formulative study was developed screening three different solid lipids (Suppocire NB, Cetyl Palmitate and Dynasan 114) for the SLN preparation by the phase inversion temperature. A bluishcolored shade formulation, with homogeneous small particles size (<50 nm) was obtained only using Suppocire NB. The cytotoxicity of all SLN was tested after 24 h exposure against three adherent skin cell lines (A431, HaCaT and SK-MEL-5). Results demonstrate that both unloaded and drugloaded SLN did not significantly affect the cell viability of the non-tumoral HaCaT cell line, thus confirming the safe potential topical application of these formulations. A dose-dependent decrease in cell viability was observed for the tumoral cell lines, A431 and SK-MEL-5, with a significant reduction of the A431 cancer cell line viability. The drug molecule addition to the uncoated nanoparticles was able to increase of almost 20% the reduction of the viability of the cancer cells treated. Ours results demonstrate the potentiality of repurposing itraconazole activity by using the combined nanoencapsulation strategy with the positively charged coating layer on SLN, which can be further investigated as a promising stable and safe approach to significantly reduce the viability of skin cancer cells.

Abstract
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neuropsychiatric disorder characterized by a developmentally inappropriate, pervasive and persistent pattern of severe inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity. Despite onset in early childhood, ADHD may continue into adulthood with substantial impairment in social, academic and occupational functioning. A new animal model of this disorder was developed in rats with genetic deletion of the dopamine transporter (DAT) gene (dopamine transporter knockout rats; DAT-KO rats). We analyzed the behavior of DAT-KO rats for a deeper phenotypical characterization of this model. We first tested rats of the 3 genotypes at different ages (preadolescent, adolescent and adult), in a novelty-seeking test using a black/white box (Experiment 1). After that, we tested adult rats in a novelty-preference test using a 3-chamber apparatus with different shapes (Experiment 2). Experiment 1: as evidenced by analysis of time spent in the novel environment, adult DAT heterozygous (DAT-HET) rats show an increased curiosity-driven exploration compared with wild-type (WT) controls while DAT-KO rats did not recognize novelty. The locomotor activity data show a minimal difference between genotypes at adolescent age while the preadolescent and adult DAT-KO rats have significantly increased activity rate compared with WT and DAT-HET subjects. Experiment 2: in this case, due to more clearly evident spatial differences, time spent in novel environment was not significantly different among genotypes. During first 10 minutes, DAT-KO rats showed a decreased hyperactivity, apparently related to curiosity and attention to the new environments. In conclusion, DAT-KO rats may show some inattention while more novelty-seeking traits appear in DAT-HET rats.

Abstract
We report a study of the interface between antimony and the prototypical topological insulator Bi2Se3. Scanning tunnelling microscopy measurements show the presence of ordered domains displaying a perfect lattice match with bismuth selenide. Density functional theory calculations of the most stable atomic configurations demonstrate that the ordered domains can be attributed to stacks of β-antimonene.

Abstract
Spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy of thin Ag(1 1 1) films on ferromagnetic Fe(1 1 0) shows a series of spin-polarized peaks. These features derive from Ag sp-bands, which form quantum well states and resonances due to confinement by a spin-dependent interface potential barrier. The spin-up states are broader and located at higher binding energy than the corresponding spin-down states at [Formula: see text], although the differences attenuate near the Fermi level. The spin-down states display multiple gap openings, which interrupt their parabolic-like dispersion. First-principles calculations attribute these findings to the symmetry- and spin-selective hybridization of the Ag states with the exchange-split bands of the substrate.

Abstract
Solid lipid nanoparticle (SLN), nanostructured lipid carriers (NLC) and hybrid nanoparticles, have gained increasing interest as drug delivery systems because of their potential to load and release drugs from the Biopharmaceutical classification system (BCS) of class II (low solubility and high permeability) and of class IV (low solubility and low permeability). Lipid properties (e.g. high solubilizing potential, biocompatibility, biotolerability, biodegradability and distinct route of absorption) contribute for the improvement of the bioavailability of these drugs for a set of administration routes. Their interest continues to grow, as translated by the number of patents being field worldwide. This paper discusses the recent advances on the use of SLN, NLC and lipid-polymer hybrid nanoparticles for the loading of lipophilic, poorly water-soluble and poorly permeable drugs, being developed for oral, topical, parenteral and ocular administration, also discussing the industrial applications of these systems. A review of the patents filled between 2014 and 2017, concerning the original inventions of lipid nanocarriers, is also provided.

Abstract
In the last decades, it has been recognized that extracellular vesicles (EVs) are not only cell debris with no biological role, but instead they play a key role in information exchange between cells either in health and disease conditions. EVs exhibit indeed their biological role in a pleiotropic manner. They can modulate immune responses through the activation, transfer or removal of surface receptors on target cells, the removal of cytolytic components such as membrane attack complexes, and the transfer of signaling molecules/effectors, such as nucleic acid species, infectious particles, and oncogenes. Among the naturally-derived nanoparticles that have been developed in the last years, stimuli responsive exosomes drew special attention since they intrinsically possess many attributes of a desirable drug delivery system. Their small size allows them to bypass the mononuclear phagocytic system (MPS) clearance, thereby prolonging their circulation time for passive targeting to inflammatory tissues. Moreover, they can deliver their cargo directly into the cytosol, avoiding the lysosomal/endosomal pathway and thus, increasing the transfection efficiency when they are used as gene delivery systems. of This review offers the state of the art knowledge on the physiology and properties of EVs, namely, apoptotic vesicles, microvesicles and exosomes as innovative drug delivery systems for gene therapy, with a special focus on targeting dendritic cells for the treatment of autoimmune disorders.

Abstract
Fungi include a vast group of eukaryotic organisms able to colonise different natural, anthropised and extreme environments, including marine areas contaminated by metals. The present study aims to give a first multidisciplinary characterisation of marine bottom sediments contaminated by metals (Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, and Zn), originating in the water leakage from an abandoned Fe-Cu sulphide mine (Libiola, north-western Italy), and evaluate how the chemical and physical parameters of water and sediments may affect the benthic fungal communities. Our preliminary results showed the high mycodiversity of the marine sediments studied (13 genera and 23 species of marine fungi isolated), and the great physiological adaptability that this mycobiota evolved in reaction to the effects of the ecotoxic bottom sediment contamination, and associated changes in the seawater parameters.

Abstract
Ports are complex environments due to their complicated geometry (quays, channels, and piers), the presence of human activities (vessel traffic, shipyards, industries, and discharges), and natural factors (stream and torrent inputs, sea action, and currents). Taking these factors into consideration, we have examined the marine environment of a port from the point of view of the circulation of the water masses, hydrological characteristics, distribution of the sediment grain-size, mineralogical characteristics, and metal concentrations of the bottom sediments. Our results show that, in the case of the Port of Genoa (north-western Italy), the impact of human activities (such as a coal power-plant, oil depots, shipyards, dredging of the bottom sediments, etc.), natural processes (such as currents, fresh water and sediment inputs from the torrents), and the morphology of the basin, are important factors in the sediment, water, and metal distributions that have given rise to a complex environment.

Abstract
The efficient design of nanocarriers is a major challenge and must be correlated with the route of administration. Intranasal route is studied for local, systemic or cerebral treatments. In order to develop nanocarriers with suitable properties for intranasal delivery, to achieve brain and to market the product, it is extremely important the simplification of the formulation in terms of raw materials. Surfactants and cryoprotectants are often added to improve structuration and/or storage of polymeric nanoparticles. PLGA-PEG nanocarriers were prepared by nanoprecipitation method evaluating the critical role of sucrose as surfactant-like and cryoprotectant, with the aim to obtain a simpler formulation compared to those proposed in other papers. Photon correlation spectroscopy and Turbiscan analysis show that sucrose is a useful excipient during the preparation process and it effectively cryoprotects nanoparticles. Among the investigated nanocarriers with different degree of PEG, PEGylated PLGA (5%) confers weak interaction between nanoparticles and mucin as demonstrated by thermal analysis and mucin particle method. Furthermore, in vitro biological studies on HT29, as epithelium cell line, does not show cytotoxicity effect for this nanocarrier at all texted concentrations. The selected nanosystem was also studied to load docetaxel, as model drug, and characterized by a technological point of view.

Abstract
In this study we have examined the currents and hydrological characteristics of the water column off the mouth of the Gromolo Torrent (north-western Italy) in relation to the grain-size, mineralogical characteristics and metal distribution in the marine sediment sampled. Our purpose was to quantify and map the contamination that was carried out to sea from the abandoned Libiola Fe-Cu sulphide mine that has heavily impacted the torrent. Our results show high concentrations of Cu and Zn, and relatively high concentrations of Cd and Ni inside the bay into which the Gromolo Torrent flows. However, high concentrations of As, Cr, Hg, Mn, Pb, and V found in the northern and/or eastern parts of the study area originated from other sources. The subdivision of study stations in terms of metal and mineral contents in the bottom sediments highlighted the clear influence of the currents on their dispersion and distribution in the area.

Abstract
Due to their characteristics, colloidal particles are able to control the dispersion of many organic and inorganic pollutants in soils and streams. Colloidal precipitates generated by acid mine drainage (AMD) process are usually amorphous or nanocrystalline materials, and their stability plays a crucial role in controlling the fate of metals released by sulphide oxydation. This paper describes a study of elements release (Fe, Al, Mn, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, S, Zn) due to desorption or destabilization of three different colloidal precipitates, two ochreous and a greenish-blue precipitate, sampled at the Libiola mine site (northwest Italy). The samples were heated at high temperature in order to verify this treatment as inertization process. At room temperature, the most easily extracted element was S (with released percentages from 8.39 to 29.17 %), but considerable amounts of Cu, Zn and Mn (up to 16.6, 610.6 and 595.6 mg/kg, respectively) were also observed in the leachates for greenish-blue precipitates. The highest release of elements (S > Cu, Zn, Mn, Cd > Co, Ni > Al, Fe, Cr), with minor differences depending on the mineralogical composition of the samples, was observed for heat-treated samples obtained through moderate heating and mainly formed by anhydrous phases. Samples treated at high temperature had the lowest release, with only Cu showing a significant concentration in the leachate of greenish-blue precipitates. The results showed that dissolution/desorption is limited from ochreous natural colloidal precipitates occurring at the Libiola mine site but also that high amounts of some metals can be remobilized from greenish-blue precipitates. The destabilization of all percipitates through dehydratation-dehydroxylation can further remobilize important amounts of ecotoxic elements. Heat treatment at high temperature could be a definitive, although expensive, way to fix heavy metals in the solid fraction, preventing their dispersion in the surrounding environment.

Abstract
Polymeric and hybrid aqueous-core nanocapsules were prepared using a low energy organic-solvent free procedure as innovative nanodevices for the ophthalmic delivery of melatonin. In order to evaluate how different cationic lipids could affect the main properties of the nanodevices, we focused our attention on mean particles size, surface charge, shape and stability (the "4S"). The results of our study confirmed the hypothesis that the coating material differently affects the overall nanoparticles properties, above all in terms of morphology: in particular, the cationic lipid dimethyldioctadecylammonium bromide allows the formation of very stable well-defined nanocapsules with non-spherical shape with sustained and prolonged drug release, thus representing a great advantage in ophthalmic application.

Abstract
The mobilisation of sediments and related contaminants connected to dredging activities is one of the most critical issues to the environmental risk and exposure assessment of a dredging project. The aim of this paper was an investigation of the mobilisation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) due to the dredging of the Port of Genoa (Italy) to identify the temporal and spatial extent of the contaminant transport, and the influence of the dredging and the boundary conditions on it. The results showed relatively low background PAH concentrations in the water column and confirmed the dredging as the primary rising factor of concentrations in the water column, but also showed a complex scenario in which the different environmental and dredging factors forced the concentrations at different levels and moments. The post dredging phase showed PAH values close to the background conditions and the concentrations remained relatively high only for a few PAHs.

Abstract
We report an investigation of the structural and electronic properties of a Pb monolayer (ML) grown on Ag(1 0 0), by combining x-ray photoelectron diffraction (XPD) and angle resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES). The Pb atoms are found to arrange in a pseudo-hexagonal adlayer commensurate to the underlying square Ag substrate, resulting in a coincidence cell with c([Formula: see text]) periodicity. The electronic structure of the Pb ML in proximity of the Fermi level consists in three p-derived bands, which show different degrees of hybridization with the substrate for their different orbital characters. In particular, we report that the p xy states disperse without forming energy gap, in contrast to previous ARPES studies of the Pb ML on different metallic substrates. We attribute the absence of energy gap to the commensurability between substrate and adlayer, resulting in a higher two-dimensionality of the Pb ML.

Abstract
A periodic network of Ag heptamers forms on the carburized W(1 1 0)-R(15 × 12) surface, upon deposition of sub-monolayer amounts of Ag. We investigate the electronic structure and dimensionality of this system by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The observation of very well-defined Ag 4d-levels confirms the highly ordered growth of size-selected Ag nano-particles on the W(1 1 0)-R(15 × 12) template. The absence of energy dispersion of these states indicates negligible coupling among the Ag heptamers, and points out the local character of the heptamer-substrate interaction. The system can be described as an array of Ag heptamers with fully confined Ag 4d-levels.

Abstract
Very little is known about the influence of environmental radiation on living matter. In principle, important information can be acquired by analysing possible differences between parallel biological systems, one in a reference-radiation environment (RRE) and the other in a low-radiation environment (LRE). We took advantage of the unique opportunity represented by the cell culture facilities at the Gran Sasso National Laboratories of the Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare, where environment dose rate reduction factors in the underground (LRE), with respect to the external laboratory (RRE), are as follows: 10(3) for neutrons, 10(7) for directly ionizing cosmic rays and 10 for total γ-rays. Chinese hamster V79 cells were cultured for 10 months in both RRE and LRE. At the end of this period, all the cultures were kept in RRE for another 6 months. Changes in the activities of antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase, SOD; catalase, CAT; glutathione peroxidase, GPX) and spontaneous mutation frequency at the hypoxanthine-guanine phosphoribosyl transferase (hprt) locus were investigated. The results obtained suggest that environmental radiation might act as a trigger of defence mechanisms in V79 cells, specifically those in reference conditions, showing a higher degree of defence against endogenous damage as compared to cells grown in a very low-radiation environment. Our findings corroborate the hypothesis that environmental radiation contributes to the development of defence mechanisms in today living organisms/systems.
