Abstract
BACKGROUND Periodontal diseases can negatively impact the oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) of pregnant women. This study investigates the association between maternal oral inflammatory load (OIL), sociodemographic characteristics, and the OHRQoL in postpartum women. METHODS In this cross-sectional study, breastfeeding mothers were recruited from St. Michael's Hospital, Toronto within 2-4 weeks postpartum. Mothers were categorized into "Normal/low" and "High" OIL groups based on the absolute counts of oral polymorphonuclear neutrophils (oPMNs). The Oral Health Impact Profile-14 questionnaire was used to assess the impact of the maternal OIL on the OHRQoL. Multiple linear regression analyses were performed to examine the association between maternal sociodemographic factors including age, marital status, education level, employment status, parity, and their OHRQoL. RESULTS Forty-seven mothers were included in this study. Mothers with high OIL reported higher impact on their OHRQoL (30%) than mothers with normal/low OIL (21%), but these differences were not statistically different. There was a negative relationship between the mother's education level and the extent of impact of OHRQoL on the "physical pain" dimension (p < 0.05), and between the mothers' age and employment status and the "physical disability" dimension (p < 0.05). A positive correlation was noted between multi-parity and the extent of impact of OHRQoL on the "physical disability" dimension (p = 0.009), and between the marital status and the "psychological disability" dimension (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION This study highlighted the significant impact of sociodemographic characteristics on the OHRQoL of mothers, showcasing the importance of considering these factors when implementing targeted preventive dental care programs for mothers.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION There is considerable variation in the reporting of treatment outcomes in endodontics. Patient-centered outcomes are often inadequately reported in endodontic outcome studies. This paper explores patients' expectations and reported outcomes in nonsurgical root canal treatment (NS-RCT), nonsurgical root canal retreatment (NS-ReTx), and endodontic microsurgery (EMS). METHODS We used a qualitative description approach and conducted telephone and virtual semi-structured interviews with participants who had the following treatments within the preceding 3-12 months: NS-RCT (n = 10), NS-ReTx (n = 10), or EMS (n = 10). Half of these treatments were performed by senior endodontic residents in an academic setting and the other half by a community-based endodontist at a private practice. RESULTS Participants identified several outcomes that were important to them and integral to treatment success, such as tooth survival, resolution of symptoms, aesthetics, and radiographic healing. Process-related factors were as important as treatment outcomes for participants. Communicating with and educating patients during treatment increased participants' satisfaction and lowered their stress. Dissatisfaction was linked to the lack of a comprehensive treatment and follow-up plan. Thorough planning ensured that patients were fully informed and had a structured approach to achieving their desired outcomes. CONCLUSIONS This study provides a list of outcomes that are important for patients undergoing NS-RCT, NS-ReTx, and EMS. These outcomes should be considered when developing a core outcome set related to endodontic treatments. Additionally, this study reports patients' expectations regarding process-related factors that are essential for providing patient-centered care and improving patient experience.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Inconsistencies in the definitions of endodontic outcome terminology jeopardize evaluations of proposed interventions and patient care quality. This scoping review aimed to provide groundwork to develop a set of basic outcomes in endodontics. METHODS We performed a comprehensive literature search for randomized controlled trials, cohort studies, case-control studies, and case series (≥10 patients) published after 1980 with patients ≥10 years of age with any preoperative pulpal and periapical diagnosis in permanent teeth requiring nonsurgical root canal treatment, retreatment, or apexification. Abstracted data on outcome assessment methods, assessors, and domains were reported after univariate and bivariate analyses. RESULTS Treatment outcomes were evaluated radiographically (88%) or clinically (73%). Although 2-dimensional radiography exceeded 3-dimensional radiography, the use of the latter has increased since 2010, mostly for nonsurgical retreatments. Of 19 identified outcomes, 5 were most frequent: success (168 studies, 40%), radiographic healing (128 studies, 30%), survival (of an asymptomatic tooth [48 studies, 12%] or of a procedure code in administrative databases [31 studies, 7%]), pain assessment (14 studies, 3%), and quality of life (11 studies, 3%). Clinician-centered outcomes have been most frequently studied since the 1980s (71%), in academic settings (76%), and using a prospective design (45%). Patient-centered outcomes were reported in 19% of studies before 2010 and 30% since 2010. They were more common among retrospective studies (49%). CONCLUSIONS Patient-centered outcome measures are lacking in endodontic studies. The state of available research can provide a baseline for the development of a core outcome set in endodontics, which should represent the important patient-centered outcomes in conjunction with well-validated clinician-centered outcomes.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Despite initiatives to standardize and improve reporting of rapidly growing endodontic outcome research studies, issues related to missing and ambiguous information are still of great concern. In this article, we propose a framework for standardized data collection and a compiled checklist for reporting of various study designs on endodontic outcome. METHODS A comprehensive search was carried out to locate randomized controlled trials, cohorts, case-control studies, or case series of >100 patients that reported on endodontic outcomes. We reviewed these articles to develop a Data Collection Template and compiled a checklist for reporting of future endodontic outcome research. RESULTS Out of 354 eligible articles previously reported in our scoping review on endodontic outcome studies, 109 articles were selected and screened for study variables or levels of categorization. Our complied Data Collection Template was developed in 19 domains to highlight important demographic, preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative variables. Because of the specific needs for endodontic outcome literature, we also proposed a compiled checklist (consisting of 4 main domains) to facilitate the reporting of various study designs on endodontic outcome studies. This checklist included simple descriptions of the required items and examples on reporting from published endodontic studies. CONCLUSIONS By facilitating the collection and reporting of relevant research data by investigators in private practice and academia, we hope that the proposed Data Collection Template and reporting guideline can highlight the importance of standardization among clinicians and researchers while producing valid scientific information that will support evidence-based treatment decisions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Despite initiatives to standardize reports, variance in study design, outcomes assessed, and tools used are persistent in literature. This review scoped existing literature on endodontic outcome studies for future development of core outcome sets. DESIGN Comprehensive literature search of randomized controlled trials, cohort, case-control studies, or case series (≥10 patients), published after 1980, patients aged ≥10 years, and any preoperative pulpal and periapical diagnosis in permanent teeth requiring non-surgical root canal treatment (NS-RCT), retreatment (NS-ReTx), or apexification was performed. Abstracted data were reported through descriptive statistics. RESULTS Of 9,957 studies screened, 354 were included. An increase in the quantity of endodontic outcome publications and levels of evidence in their study design was noted over the past four decades. Although 41% of studies included participants aged 26-50, literature including participants aged >50 has increased since 2000. Apexification and NS-ReTx were mostly provided by specialists and postgraduate students. The most common follow-up period was 2-5 years (35%), and most randomized controlled trials (58%) reported follow-up times <1 year. Multiple visit treatment was most common in apexification studies (85%). Deficiency, inconsistency and ambiguity were observed across many reports. CONCLUSIONS NS-ReTx and NS-RCT/NS-ReTx studies have increased over the past two decades, particularly those focusing on molars and patients >50 years old. Despite the progress in endodontic research, heterogeneity in reporting styles yield considerable limitations, particularly data standardization challenges and inconsistencies in methods and results reporting. This scoping review highlighted the state of available research and supported the development of standardized guidelines for future investigations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To address the inadequacy of oral health care in developing nations, outreach programs have facilitated the provision of dental services by foreign volunteers to areas of need. However, the effectiveness of the current aid model on the long-term well-being of the recipient population and sustainability of efforts remains uncertain. The authors examine the strengths and areas of improvement of outreach initiatives to inform a reorientation of the aid model. METHODS The authors conducted a PubMed search and reviewed included articles to assess the current limitations and recommended strategies for outreach programs. The identified limitations and strategies were sorted into 4 key areas of change and organized using the Theory of Change framework to inform an improved aid model. RESULTS The current aid models were found to have limitations in scope and coverage, interventions that were not applicable or integrated into local systems, and an inadequate evidence base. To address these limitations, efforts should be directed at the capacity building of local workers through individual training and evidence-based interventions, improved understanding of local contexts, and integration and alignment with local systems. CONCLUSIONS The empowerment of local communities is critical in ensuring an effective and sustainable aid model in developing nations. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS By adopting an improved aid model, outreach programs can enhance the long-term access and availability of quality oral health care that is delivered by local providers and communities.

Abstract
PROBLEM We hypothesized that trophoblast expression of Ccl25 attracts a specific leukocyte cell population to the implantation site for local regulation. METHOD OF STUDY Mice blastocysts, ectoplacental cones, and decidua at gestational days 3.5-7.5 were evaluated for Ccl25 and Ccr9 expressions. Peripheral availability and characterization of Ccr9+ leukocytes were determined by flow cytometry. Leukocyte chemotaxis was assessed in the presence of Ccl25 recombinant protein and embryos using antisense oligomers (ODNs) to Ccl25 and Ccr9 neutralizing antibody. RESULTS Ccl25 was expressed by embryonic cells, whereas Ccr9 expression was strong at the maternal compartment and in PBMC. Immunolocalization confirmed this expression. In vitro, chemotaxis assays showed that the embryonic Ccl25 signals to Ccr9+ PBMCs. Maternal Ccr9+α4β7+ monocytes switch from an anti-inflammatory phenotype (F4/80+11b+Ly6C-TGF-β+ cells, pre-implantation) to an inflammatory profile (F4/80+11b+Ly6C+TNF-α+ cells, post-implantation). CONCLUSION Our data support the establishment of a CCL25/CCR9-axis at the maternal-fetal interface in mice, which may be involved in immune regulatory mechanisms during embryo implantation.

Abstract
UNLABELLED The aim of the study was to analyze a series of Brazilian patients with Niemann-Pick disease type C (NP-C). METHOD Correlations between clinical findings, laboratory data, molecular findings and treatment response are presented. RESULT The sample consisted of 5 patients aged 8 to 26 years. Vertical supranuclear gaze palsy, cerebellar ataxia, dementia, dystonia and dysarthria were present in all cases. Filipin staining showed the "classical" pattern in two patients and a "variant" pattern in three patients. Molecular analysis found mutations in the NPC1 gene in all alleles. Miglustat treatment was administered to 4 patients. CONCLUSION Although filipin staining should be used to confirm the diagnosis, bone marrow sea-blue histiocytes often help to diagnosis of NP-C. The p.P1007A mutation seems to be correlated with the "variant" pattern in filipin staining. Miglustat treatment response seems to be correlated with the age at disease onset and disability scale score at diagnosis.

Abstract
Haematological problems are commonly associated with use of beta-interferon in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients. However these problems are usually benign and are reversible when the drug is stopped. We describe two patients, with the diagnosis of MS, who developed leucocytosis. Cytogenetic studies showed the presence of the Philadelphia chromosome in all the cells analysed, confirming the diagnosis of chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML). The first patient currently on imatimib mesylate and interferon beta-1a is asymptomatic. For the second patient, interferon beta-1a was withdrawn after suspicion of CML.

Abstract
13136 Background: Kyphoplasty is an effective procedure to alleviate pain in metastatic vertebrae. 153Samarium-EDTMP (153Sm) is used for palliative treatment of multiple bone metastases. The hematological toxicity is the main limiting factor. Objectives: Study the feasibility of intervertebral administration of 153 SM with Kyphoplasty. Assess procedure related morbidities specifically haematological since a direct vertebral route is planned though to a much smaller dose. Methods: IRB approval for an off label use of 153Sm-EDTMP was obtained. Six patients with documented vertebral bone metastasis and pathological compression fractures were studied (Thoracic in 2 and lumbar in 4). Primary cancer was lung in 2, prostate (1), maxillary sinus (1), myeloma (1) and colon (1). Serial dilution of 153 SM was performed to obtain 2 mci/1ml. Kyphoplasty procedure was carried out using the known protocol. 2 mCi of 153Sm was admixed with the bone cement and administered under tight radiation safety measures. Serial nuclear body scans were obtained. Pain assessment was evaluated using analog pain score at 1, 7 and 30 days. Serial blood counts are followed. Results: All patients tolerated procedure well. No immediate procedure(s) related morbidities were noted. One case was not technically satisfactory and no significant uptake was detected in the injected vertebra. Nuclear scan done on 0 revealed excellent radiotracer uptake in the other 5 vertebrae injected. The absorbed radiotracer was seen to target other skeletal metastatic lesions in 2 patients. There was no significant change in WBC, HCT or Platelets seen in blood counts obtained over one month post-procedure. Except for the first patient, no appreciable radiation leakage was encountered. Pain score was reduced from a mean of 8.5 to 3.2 during the first week and was maintained below score of 4 at one month assessment. Conclusions: The combination of intervertebral administration of 153SM and Kyphoplasty seems to be well tolerated. No haematological side effects were encountered; probably due to the use of only 2 mci compared to over 70 mci in intravenous administration. Pain control seems to be satisfactory at areas treated. Analysis of procedure related radiological changes is underway. No significant financial relationships to disclose.

Abstract
The uterine inversion is a rare but serious pathology of the delivery. We describe two cases of uterine inversion of secondary and quaternary degree; the first had a delay diagnosis and the second having a return after the manual replacement, finishing both on surgical resolution. The authors describe the causal factors, the diagnosis and the therapeutic of uterine inversion.

Abstract
Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) developed among 11 of 416 renal allograft recipients transplanted between 1985 and 2000. Only 3 among 364 Caucasian recipients developed KS, while it affected 8 of 52 Black patients, all of whom had been born in African countries (P <.001). All patients had their immunosuppression reduced; two also received daunorubicin and one received electrotherapy. Three patients developed accelerated renal allograft dysfunction, probably due to the reduced immunosuppression. Remission of KS was observed in seven patients, while lesions stabilized or improved partially in the other four. After resuming dialysis 2 of 11 patients died; both were in KS remission. Human herpes virus-8 (HHV-8) serology and DNA analysis was evaluated in sera obtained from seven donors: all were negative. Conversely, among eight sera collected pretransplant from the nine living recipients, HHV-8 IgG was detected in six and DNA was present in one. HHV-8 IgG was expressed in all patients (9/9) at some point posttransplant; DNA was detected in three patients. Therefore, the robust ethnic predisposition to KS was associated with a high pretransplant prevalence of HHV-8 among African recipients. Although some seroconversions were detected posttransplant, there was no evidence for donor-to-recipient transmission.

Abstract
Preclinical Cushing's syndrome (PCS) is a condition in which cortisol excess is not associated to clinical features of Cushing's syndrome. The aim of this study was to detect PCS in 48 ambulatory overweight type 2 diabetic patients (DM). Controls were 40 normoglycemic obese (Ob) and 36 normo-weight healthy subjects (N). In DM (47/48) total urinary cortisol (UF) levels were similar to those found in Ob and N. Evening urinary cortisol (Spot F) was significantly higher than either Ob (p: 0.0001) or N (p: 0.03), although values did not overcome the upper normal limit (44 ng/mg creatinine). False positive results to the overnight 1 mg dexamethasone suppression test were found in 31% and 22% of DM and Ob, respectively. In a DM female an elevated UF and Spot F associated to absence of cortisol inhibition to the overnight 1 mg dexamethasone suppression test was repeatedly detected. Diagnosis of PCS was performed. Remission of hypercorticism and glycemic control were achieved after pituitary surgery. It would be useful to screen DM patients with poor glycemic control for PCS.

Abstract
Six cases of nonunion of subcapital (neck) fractures of the proximal phalanx of the thumb in children were seen over a period of 5 years. Ages at the time of injury ranged between 2 and 3 years. Entrapment of the thumb in a closing door was the mechanism of injury in all cases. All fractures were closed and were significantly displaced. Immediate management was by closed reduction and splinting in four cases, closed reduction and K-wire fixation in one case and no treatment in one case, which was later treated by delayed open reduction and K-wire fixation. Only two of the six ununited fractures were eventually treated with bone grafts and both fractures united resulting in a stable thumb but with a limited range of flexion of the interphalangeal joint. Factors that may increase the risk of nonunion of these fractures in children are discussed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of the study was to look for a rise in reticulocyte levels in workers exposed to various solvents, in comparison to non exposed control subjects. METHODS A cohort of exposed workers was selected on the criterion of exposure to solvents, among employees regularly attending the Centre of Occupational Medicine of Molsheim (France) during the second trimester of 1995. Controls were selected over the same period from the voluntary blood donors of the Transfusion Centre of Strasbourg (France). Complete blood counts and flow cytometric reticulocyte counts were determined in all blood samples. RESULTS Analysis of the haematological parameters displaying significant differences revealed the existence of higher levels of circulating reticulocytes and lymphocytes in workers exposed to solvents than in control subjects. These variations did not appear to depend on the intensity or length of exposure. CONCLUSIONS This study demonstrates the occurrence of an increase in circulating reticulocytes in relation to occupational exposure to solvents, without as yet providing sufficient information to allow elucidation of the underlying mechanism. An increase in total circulating lymphocytes was observed in the same group of exposed workers. The concomitant rise in absolute values of these two elements of the blood counts is to our knowledge described here for the first time in an epidemiological study.

Abstract
Diagnostic measurements and pharmacokinetic studies were performed in 17 patients with various kinds of malignant, premalignant and benign lesions in the head and neck region by means of point monitoring laser-induced fluorescence. For marking different types of tissue, delta-aminolevulinic acid (ALA)-induced protoporphyrin IX (PpIX) was used. The ALA-induced PpIX synthesis was monitored at different time intervals after oral administration of ALA in low doses, 5 and 15 mg/kg b.w. Besides the porphyrin-related signal the tissue endogenous fluorescence was also recorded. The fluorescence spectra were evaluated at two different wavelengths corresponding to the specific drug-related fluorescence peak and the endogenous tissue fluorescence emission at 635 and 490 nm, respectively. The evaluated fluorescence data were correlated to the histopathological tissue investigation. A fall-off in the overall fluorescence intensity at 490 nm was obtained for all the malignant and premalignant areas, as well as an increased red fluorescence. A ratio between the red and the blue/green fluorescence intensity was formed for each time interval after the ALA administration. The lower drug dose seems to be sufficient to obtain a useful demarcation ratio between normal and diseased tissue with a very low PpIX fluorescence intensity in the normal tissue. A PpIX fluorescence maximum seems to occur between 3 and 4 h in normal tissues, whereas malignant tumour tissue shows a higher level for a longer period of time.

Abstract
Glycated proteins formed by the Maillard reaction were measured by furosine determination in human normal lenses and in senile and diabetic cataracts. Furosine, an hydrolysis product of fructose-lysine adduct formed in the early stages of the Maillard reaction, was measured by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Furosine levels in diabetic cataracts were found to be 3 to 4 times higher than those observed for senile cataracts. The increased glycation levels both in cortex and nucleus were related to the increase of fluorescence determined in vitro by fluorometry and in vivo by Scheimpflug photography. Lens proteins were incubated with glucose and it has been demonstrated that protein glycation occurred parallel with the increase in concentration of fluorescent chromophores that present similar characteristics as those observed in vivo. The results indicate that protein insolubilization seemed to involve preferentially glycated proteins and at least in diabetic cataracts, the process seems to be initiated in the cortical region.

Abstract
We have previously reported that seminal plasma (SP) pool from donors and azoospermic patients can inhibit the NK response in vitro. In this study we investigated whether SP also inhibits the interleukin -2-activated natural cytotoxicity (LAK). Pools of SP from 10 healthy donors and 17 azoospermic patients were used. They were sterilized by filtration and stored at -20 degrees C until use. Anti-sperm antibodies were negative in all samples. Peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL) obtained from volunteer donors were incubated during 16 hours in culture medium, RPMI alone, with 10% fetal calf serum (FCS) or with 10% human serum (HuS). The NK and LAK cytotoxicity assay was performed using the cell line K 562 labeled with 51Cr. In view of our results, we conclude that LAK activity is inhibited by SP when PBL are incubated in the absence of FCS. This inhibitory effect of SP is unrelated to cellular death and there is no difference between healthy and azoospermic seminal plasma.

Abstract
One hundred and seventy-nine consecutive cases of facial clefts that were treated at the King Khalid University Hospital, in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, were analyzed for an epidemiologic study. Isolated cleft lip was present in 38 percent, cleft of lip and palate in 37.4 percent, and cleft of the posterior palate in only 22.4 percent. There was a male preponderance in all types. In cases of cleft lip with or without cleft palate, the more commonly affected side was the left, followed by bilateral cases. Associated malformations were present in 13.4 percent. A positive family history was found in 26.8 percent of cases. A significant number of patients (7.8 percent) were first seen at more than 10 years of age. The incidence of facial clefts at this hospital was 0.3 per 1000 live births, computed over a period of 6 years. This incidence is significantly lower than that reported from European and Far Eastern countries.

Abstract
We have examined the effect of human alpha-fetoprotein (h-alpha FP), at concentrations ranging from the physiological to pathological circulating levels, on the native and alpha IFN- and IL2-boosted NK activity of normal peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL). The cytotoxic function of unstimulated PBL was unchanged after a 16 hr incubation with 200 to 8000 ng/ml h-alpha FP. By contrast, this treatment significantly reduced the responsiveness of PBL to the NK-enhancer factors IFN and Interleukin 2. Optimal inhibition was observed when cells were pre-incubated with h-alpha FP before being stimulated with IFN. The sensitivity of PBL to the h-alpha FP mediated inhibition was restricted to the very early times (30 min) of incubation with the stimulating agents.

Abstract
A total of 25 cases of acute injuries caused by a meat mincer are presented. Of these, 20 were children. The pattern of injury and the extent of damage to individual digits of the hand are defined. Due to the mutilating nature of the injury, attempts at replantation or revascularization failed in all but two of the ischaemic digits. Emphasis must be placed on the safety and prevention of these dreadful accidents.

Abstract
It is at present not clear whether alpha interferon (INF-alpha) can participate in the control of glucocorticoid blood levels through direct action on the adrenal gland. In this study, the possible action of INF-alpha on cortisol release by adrenal tissue was tested in vitro. Slices of normal human adrenals were incubated with INF-alpha for 3 h at 37 degrees C in 95% air and 5% CO2. Cortisol release by adrenal tissue was stimulated by INF-alpha, showing a dose-response curve from 20 IU/ml, the lowest dose that gave a response, to a maximal dose of 60 IU/ml when the response reached a plateau. The effect of INF-alpha on cortisol liberation by adrenal tissue in vitro may be implied in neuroimmune regulatory interactions.

Abstract
Natural Killer (NK) activity has been shown to be depressed under stressful conditions. Glucocorticoids, which are known to increase during stress, seem to negatively regulate the activity of NK cells. In the present study we have explored the effect of cortisol (hydrocortisone, HC) on NK activity. A significant inhibitory effect could be observed as early as 6 hr after the addition of HC at the concentration of 0.5 microM, corresponding to the upper physiological circulating level. Both the lysis and the binding of the K562 target cells were affected by HC, indicating that the hormone acts on the target recognition phase. The HC-mediated inhibition of the NK activity was fully reversed after 6 hr incubation in a HC-free medium. The observation of comparable levels of NK-inhibition using unseparated PBL or purified LGL, show that HC acts directly on LGL to inhibit their cytotoxic function. The effect of HC on the responsiveness of NK cells to the modifiers beta-interferon (beta-IFN) and recombinant interleukin 2 (rIL2) was also studied. Pre-incubation with HC did not alter the enhancement of the activity induced by beta-IFN, demonstrating that the HC- and beta-IFN-mediated effects occur in separate NK subsets. By contrast the increase of NK cytotoxicity induced by rIL2 was lower in the HC-treated compared to the untreated cell cultures (35.8 +/- 6.2 and 20.7 +/- 4.3% respectively, p less than 0.05) which could indicate that a portion of the cells triggered by rIL2 belong to the HC-sensitive NK subpopulation.

Abstract
Extracranial shunting of cerebrospinal fluid is a well-known neurosurgical procedure for the treatment of normal pressure hydrocephalus. Research indicating reasonable success using this technique has been based primarily on subjective and global neurosurgical opinion. Given that the treatment carries morbidity risks, and that decisions to shunt are related to increasing adaptive functioning, attention must be paid to adequate measurement of surgical outcome. As part of a larger study, we report pre and postsurgical neuropsychological, neuroradiological, and clinical data on hydrocephalic patients, as well as presurgical intracranial pressure data. Prior to shunting, increase in ventricular dilatation and cerebral atrophy were associated with decreased cognitive functioning, gait disturbance, and bladder dysfunction. Following shunting, there were significant improvements in neuropsychological functioning in terms of attention, concentration, verbal and nonverbal memory, language and communication skills, and constructional skills, as well as clinical improvement in gait and bladder functioning. Improvement was related to presurgical dilatation of the temporal horns of the lateral ventricles and mental status, particularly memory functions.

Abstract
Experiments were undertaken to determine whether the depression of natural killer (NK) activity previously observed in the peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL) of leukaemia patients in remission extended to NK-like precursors in the blood. T-lymphocytes (E+) from leukaemia patients and normal subjects were depleted of IgG Fc-receptor-bearing (gamma FcR) fresh NK cells by passage over immune complex-coated monolayers. gamma FcR - E + PBL were cultured alone or with DAUDI cells. On day 5 of culture, cytotoxicity toward the NK-sensitive cell lines K562 and MOLT-4 was evaluated in the responder lymphocytes of leukaemia patients and controls. Negligible NK-like cytotoxicity was found in both FcR - E + PBL responder populations cultured alone. By contrast, stimulation with DAUDI induced high levels of K562 and MOLT-4 cytotoxicity in leukaemia as well as in normal responder cells. Complement-mediated cytotoxicity experiments using various McAb demonstrated that in both normal and leukaemia cultures NK-like effectors react with the pan-T OKT3 McAb and with the OKT11 McAB directed to the SRBC receptor, but not with Leu 1 1b and OKM1 McAbs, directed against antigens expressed on peripheral blood NK cells. Fractionation of the responder cells on discontinuous Percoll gradients showed that most of this activity was present in the highly dividing blast cell fraction.

Abstract
CT scan findings, clinical features and intracranial pressure were studied in patients with severe diffuse head injury. Compression of the 3rd ventricle and basal cisterns closely correlated with an intracranial pressure greater than 20 mmHg, with clinical signs of midbrain dysfunctions and worse prognosis. These CT scan findings can indicate whether intracranial pressure monitoring is appropriate.

Abstract
Experience with sixteen consecutive cases of lower leg skin loss has confirmed the reliability of Pontén's fascio-cutaneous or "super flap" (1981) in the management of these difficult injuries. The technique has several important advantages compared with the conventional lower leg flaps of both the ipsi-lateral and cross-leg variety.
