Abstract
OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of a modified surgical approach for the treatment of temporal lobe epilepsy secondary to hippocampal sclerosis (HS). This modified approach, called temporopolar amygdalohippocampectomy (TP-AH), includes a transsylvian resection of the temporal pole and subsequent amygdalohippocampectomy utilizing the limen insula as an anatomical landmark. METHODS A total of 61 patients who were diagnosed with HS and underwent TP-AH between 2013 and 2017 were enrolled. Patients performed pre- and postoperative diffusion tensor imaging and were classified according to Engel's scale for seizure control. To evaluate the functional preservation of the temporal stem white-matter fiber tracts, the authors analyzed postoperative Humphrey perimetries and pre- and postoperative neurocognitive performance (Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test [RAVLT], Weschler Memory Scale-Revised [WMS-R], intelligence quotient [IQ], Boston Naming Test [BNT], and semantic and phonemic fluency). Demographic data and surgical complications were also recorded and described. RESULTS After a median follow-up of 36 ± 16 months, 46 patients (75.4%) achieved Engel class I, of whom 37 (60.6%) were Engel class IA. No significant changes in either the inferior frontooccipital fasciculus and optic radiation tractography were observed postoperatively for both left- and right-side surgeries. Reliable perimetry was obtained in 40 patients (65.6%), of whom 27 (67.5%) did not present any visual field defects (VFDs) attributable to surgery, while 12 patients (30%) presented with quadrant VFD, and 1 patient (2.5%) presented with hemifield VFD. Despite a significant decline in verbal memory (p = 0.007 for WMS-R, p = 0.02 for RAVLT recognition), there were significant improvements in both IQ (p < 0.001) and visual memory (p = 0.007). Semantic and phonemic fluency, and scores on the BNT, did not change postoperatively. CONCLUSIONS TP-AH provided seizure control similar to historical temporal lobe approaches, with a tendency to preserve the temporal stem and a satisfactory incidence of VFD. Despite a significant decline in verbal memory, there were significant improvements in both IQ and visual memory, along with preservation of executive function. This approach can be considered a natural evolution of the selective transsylvian approach.

Abstract
Haematopoiesis is an essential process in early vertebrate development that occurs in different distinct spatial locations in the embryo that shift over time. These different sites have distinct functions: in some anatomical locations specific hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPCs) are generated de novo. In others, HSPCs expand. HSPCs differentiate and renew in other locations, ensuring homeostatic maintenance. These niches primarily control haematopoiesis through a combination of cell-to-cell signalling and cytokine secretion that elicit unique biological effects in progenitors. To understand the molecular signals generated by these niches, we report the generation of caudal hematopoietic embryonic stromal tissue (CHEST) cells from 72-hours post fertilization (hpf) caudal hematopoietic tissue (CHT), the site of embryonic HSPC expansion in fish. CHEST cells are a primary cell line with perivascular endothelial properties that expand hematopoietic cells in vitro. Morphological and transcript analysis of these cultures indicates lymphoid, myeloid, and erythroid differentiation, indicating that CHEST cells are a useful tool for identifying molecular signals critical for HSPC proliferation and differentiation in the zebrafish. These findings permit comparison with other temporally and spatially distinct haematopoietic-supportive zebrafish niches, as well as with mammalian haematopoietic-supportive cells to further the understanding of the evolution of the vertebrate hematopoietic system.

Abstract
We previously identified CCL20 as an early chemokine in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of patients with pneumococcal meningitis but its functional relevance was unknown. Here we studied the role of CCL20 and its receptor CCR6 in pneumococcal meningitis. In a prospective nationwide study, CCL20 levels were significantly elevated in the CSF of patients with pneumococcal meningitis and correlated with CSF leukocyte counts. CCR6-deficient mice with pneumococcal meningitis and WT mice with pneumococcal meningitis treated with anti-CCL20 antibodies both had reduced CSF white blood cell counts. The reduction in CSF pleocytosis was also accompanied by an increase in brain bacterial titers. Additional in vitro experiments showed direct chemoattractant activity of CCL20 for granulocytes. In summary, our results identify the CCL20-CCR6 axis as an essential component of the innate immune defense against pneumococcal meningitis, controlling granulocyte recruitment.

Abstract
Digestive enzymatic activity and growth performance on tropical gar (Atractosteus tropicus) larvae fed Artemia nauplii (LF), frozen adult Artemia (AB), an artificial diet (AF) with 46% protein and 16% lipids and a starvation group (SG) from first feeding (5 days after hatching-5 DAH) to 34 DAH were studied. All larvae under starvation (SG) died at 15 DAH. By the end of the experimental period, morphological variables (total length, wet weight and specific growth rate) were significant in larvae fed AF compared to LF and AB. All enzymes studied in the experiment were present since the start of exogenous feeding (including pepsin) and the enzymatic activity varied with the diets. Low levels of enzymatic activity were observed until the 29 DAH; however, after this moment, there was a significant increase (eightfold), particularly for the AF treatment. In vitro protein digestibility tests performed with enzymatic extracts showed that artificial diets with 52% protein and 14% lipids were better digested by larvae before 30 DAH, while diets with 45% protein and 11% lipids were better digested after this age. Taking into account the better growth performance, higher enzymatic activity and better protein digestibility obtained, artificial diets can be used since the start of exogenous feeding on tropical gar larvae, as in other lepisosteids.

Abstract
Central and peripheral fatigue have been explored during and after running or cycling exercises. However, the fatigue mechanisms associated with a short maximal cycling exercise (30 s Wingate test) have not been investigated. In this study, 10 volunteer subjects performed several isometric voluntary contractions using the leg muscle extensors before and after two bouts of cycling at 25% of maximal power output and two bouts of Wingate tests. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and electrical motor nerve stimulation (NM) were applied at rest and during the voluntary contractions. Maximal voluntary contraction (MVC), voluntary activation (VA), twitch amplitude evoked by electrical nerve stimulation, M wave and motor potential evoked by TMS (MEP) were recorded. MVC, VA and twitch amplitude evoked at rest by NM decreased significantly after the first and second Wingate tests, indicating central and peripheral fatigue. MVC and VA, but not the twitch amplitude evoked by NM, recovered before the second Wingate test. These results suggest that the Wingate test results in a decrease in MVC associated with peripheral and central fatigue. While the peripheral fatigue is associated with an intramuscular impairment, the central fatigue seems to be the main reason for the Wingate test-induced impairment of MVC.

Abstract
CCL1 is the predominant chemokine secreted from IgE-activated human and mouse mast cells in vitro, colocalizes to mast cells in lung biopsies, and is elevated in asthmatic airways. CCR8, the receptor for CCL1, is expressed by approximately 70% of CD4(+) T lymphocytes recruited to the asthmatic airways, and the number of CCR8-expressing cells is increased 3-fold in the airways of asthmatic subjects compared with normal volunteers. In vivo, CCL1 expression in the lung is reduced in mast cell-deficient mice after aeroallergen provocation. Neutralization of CCL1 or CCR8 deficiency results in reduced mucosal lung inflammation, airway hyperresponsiveness, and mucus hypersecretion to a similar degree as detected in mast cell-deficient mice. Adenoviral delivery of CCL1 to the lungs of mast cell-deficient mice restores airway hyperresponsiveness, lung inflammation, and mucus hypersecretion to the degree observed in wild-type mice. The consequences of CCR8 deficiency, including a marked reduction in Th2 cytokine levels, are comparable with those observed by depletion of CD4(+) T lymphocytes. Thus, mast cell-derived CCL1- and CCR8-expressing CD4(+) effector T lymphocytes play an essential role in orchestrating lung mucosal inflammatory responses.

Abstract
The chemokine receptor CCR6 is expressed on naïve B cells, dendritic cell and T-cell subpopulations and is involved in cell navigation during organogenesis and recruitment in response to inflammatory stimuli. Gene-deficient C57BL/6 CCR6(-/-) mice infected with the protozoan parasite Leishmania (L.) major were able to mount a protective immune response and survived the infection. Whereas macrophage production of nitric oxide (NO), the key leishmanicidal effector molecule during the immune response to L. major, did not require CCR6, the migration of CD4(+) T cells to the site of infection was reduced in CCR6(-/-) mice. Furthermore, the induction of a T-cell-dependent delayed-type-hypersensitivity (DTH) reaction was defective in CCR6(-/-) mice, whereas resistance to re-infection was maintained in the absence of CCR6. We conclude that CCR6 contributes to the recruitment of T cells to the site of infection, but is largely dispensable for the control of L. major parasites during primary or secondary infection.

Abstract
Little is known about the assembly pathway or structure of the hepatitis C virus (HCV). In this work a truncated HCcAg variant covering the first 120 aa (HCcAg.120) with a 32 aa N-terminal fusion peptide (6x Histag-Xpress epitope) was purified as a monomer under strong denaturing conditions. In addition, minor HCcAg.120 peaks exhibiting little different molecular mass by SDS-PAGE which possibly represents alternative forms harboring the N-termini of HCcAg.120 were detected. Analysis using gel filtration chromatography showed that HCcAg.120 assembled into high molecular weight structures in vitro in the absence of structured nucleic acids. The negative-stain electron microscopy analysis revealed that these structures correspond with spherical VLPs of uniform morphology and size distribution. The diameters of these particles ranged from 20 to 43nm with an average diameter of approximately 30 nm and were specifically immunolabelled with a mouse monoclonal antibody against the residues 5-35 of HCcAg. Results presented in this work showed that HCcAg.120 assembled in vitro into VLPs in the absence of structured nucleic acids with similar morphology and size distribution to those found in sera and hepatocytes from HCV-infected patients. Therefore, these VLPs would be important to elucidate the mechanisms behind the ability of HCcAg to assemble into a nucleocapsid structure.

Abstract
CD4(+) T-cell entry to the intestinal mucosa is central to the generation of mucosal immunity as well as chronic intestinal inflammation, yet the mechanisms regulating this process remain poorly defined. Here we show that murine small intestinal CD4(+) lamina propria lymphocytes express a heterogeneous but restricted array of chemokine receptors including CCR5, CCR6, CCR9, CXCR3, and CXCR6. CD4(+) T-cell receptor transgenic OT-II cells activated in mesenteric lymph nodes acquired a distinct chemokine receptor profile, including expression of CCR6, CCR9, and CXCR3 that was only partially reproduced in vitro after priming with mesenteric lymph node dendritic cells. A subset of these effector CD4(+) T cells, expressing CD69 and alpha(4)beta(7), entered the intestinal lamina propria and the majority of these cells expressed CCR9. CCR9(-/-) OT-II cells were disadvantaged in their ability to localize to the intestinal lamina propria; however, they were readily detected at this site and expressed alpha(4)beta(7), but little CCR2, CCR5, CCR6, CCR8, CCR10, CXCR3, or CXCR6. Thus, whereas CD4(+) T cells activated in gut-associated lymphoid tissue express a restricted chemokine receptor profile, including CCR9, targeting both CCR9-dependent and CCR9-independent entry mechanisms is likely to be important to maximally inhibit accumulation of these cells within the small intestinal mucosa.

Abstract
Although the recruitment of T helper cell type 1 (Th1)/Th2 cells into peripheral tissues is essential for inflammation and the host response to infection, the traffic signals that enable the distinct positioning of Th1/Th2 cells are unclear. We have determined the role of CC chemokine receptor 5 (CCR5) in this using experimental autoimmune uveitis (EAU) as a model system. In EAU, Th1-like cells are preferentially recruited into the retina across the blood-retina barrier, partly as a result of expression of the adhesion molecules P-selectin glycoprotein ligand 1 and lymphocyte function-associated antigen-1 on these cells. CD3+ T cells, infiltrating the retina, also expressed the chemokine receptor CCR5, and CCR5 ligands, macrophage-inflammatory protein-1alpha (MIP-1alpha), MIP-1beta, and regulated on activation, normal T expressed and secreted (RANTES), were strongly expressed in the retina at peak EAU. Th1-like cells, polarized in vitro, expressed high levels of CCR5. The trafficking of these CCR5+ cells was examined by tracking them after adoptive transfer in real time in vivo at an early disease stage using scanning laser ophthalmoscopy. Treatment of the cells with antibody against CCR5 prior to transfer resulted in a reduction in their infiltration into the retina. However, rolling velocity, rolling efficiency, and adherence of the cells to retinal endothelium were not reduced. CCR5 is clearly important for Th1 cell recruitment, and this study demonstrates for the first time in vivo that CCR5 may act at the level of transendothelial migration rather than at the earlier stage of rolling on the endothelium.

Abstract
In this study, we report the first example of a nonpeptide chemokine receptor agonist, 2-{2-[4-(3-phenoxybenzyl)piperazin-1-yl]ethoxy}ethanol (ZK 756326), for the CC chemokine receptor CCR8. ZK 756326 inhibited the binding of the CCR8 ligand I-309 (CCL1), with an IC(50) value of 1.8 muM. Furthermore, ZK 756326 was a full agonist of CCR8, dose-responsively eliciting an increase in intracellular calcium and cross-desensitizing the response of the receptor to CCL1. In addition, ZK 756326 stimulated extracellular acidification in cells expressing human CCR8. The ability of ZK 756326 to induce a response was receptor-specific and mediated through Galpha(i), because it could be blocked by treatment with pertussis toxin. The CCR8 agonist activated cells expressing murine CCR8, eliciting their chemotaxis and inducing phosphorylation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase ERK1/2. Like CCL1, ZK 756326 inhibited human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) fusion of cells expressing CD4 and CCR8. Finally, unlike mCCL1, ZK 756326 bound to and activated a form of mCCR8 that was mutated to eliminate O-linked sulfation at tyrosines 14 and 15. Therefore, ZK 756326 is most probably not binding in the same manner as CCL1 but can activate the switch mechanism involved in transducing signaling events. In summary, we have identified a nonpeptide agonist of CCR8. This compound may be useful in evaluating the physiological role of CCR8 in HIV infection, as well as in the general study of CCR8 biology without the constraints inherent to the use of protein agonists such as its natural ligand.

Abstract
Gut-associated lymphoid tissue (GALT) dendritic cells (DCs) display a unique ability to generate CCR9+α4β7+ gut-tropic CD8+ effector T cells. We demonstrate efficient induction of CCR9 and α4β7 on CD8+ T cells in mesenteric lymph nodes (MLNs) after oral but not intraperitoneal (i.p.) antigen administration indicating differential targeting of DCs via the oral route. In vitro, lamina propria (LP)–derived DCs were more potent than MLN or Peyer's patch DCs in their ability to generate CCR9+α4β7+ CD8+ T cells. The integrin α chain CD103 (αE) was expressed on almost all LP DCs, a subset of MLN DCs, but on few splenic DCs. CD103+ MLN DCs were reduced in number in CCR7−/− mice and, although CD8+ T cells proliferated in the MLNs of CCR7−/− mice after i.p. but not oral antigen administration, they failed to express CCR9 and had reduced levels of α4β7. Strikingly, although CD103+ and CD103− MLN DCs were equally potent at inducing CD8+ T cell proliferation and IFN-γ production, only CD103+ DCs were capable of generating gut-tropic CD8+ effector T cells in vitro. Collectively, these results demonstrate a unique function for LP-derived CD103+ MLN DCs in the generation of gut-tropic effector T cells.

Abstract
We have expressed a recombinant Dengue 4 virus envelope glycoprotein (E4rec), truncated at its C-terminus by 53 amino acids, in Pichia pastoris. The presence of E4rec was confirmed by Western-blot using anti-DEN 4 hyper immune mouse ascitic fluid. E4rec migrated during SDS-PAGE as a 64 kDa protein. Treatment with endoglycosidases showed that the E protein was modified by the addition of short mannose chains and the absence of hyperglycosylation. When administered to BALB-C mice, E4rec elicited a DEN 4 neutralizing antibody response haemagglutination inhibition antibodies and specific memory T cell response. Mice immunized were also significantly protected against lethal DEN 4 virus challenge (86.6%, p < 0.001).

Abstract
Chemokines are thought to control lymphocyte recruitment to the inflamed endothelium. To dissect chemokine-mediated adhesion, binding of ex vivo isolated splenocytes to tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-activated endothelial cells was analyzed under shear stress. We observed specific adhesion of naive follicular B cells, which could be blocked by pertussis toxin. This indicated a G protein-mediated binding and pointed at a contribution of chemokine receptors to B-cell adhesion. Analysis of chemokines expressed by TNF-activated endothelial cells showed that CC chemokine ligand 2 (CCL2), CCL17, and CCL20 were up-regulated. Only on follicular B cells was the cognate receptor for CCL20, CC chemokine receptor 6 (CCR6), expressed strongly, and a functional transmigration assay with CCR6-negative B cells demonstrated conclusively the sole signaling of CCL20 through CCR6. Desensitization of CCR6 on naive B cells with CCL20 resulted in receptor down-regulation and reduced B-cell adhesion. We conclude that CCL20 plays a vital role in B-cell adhesion to the inflamed endothelium.

Abstract
The follicle-associated epithelium (FAE) secretes chemokines important in the recruitment of various cell types including CCL20 (MIP-3alpha). CCL20 is chemotactic to the CD11b(+) dendritic cells (DCs) distributed in the subepithelial dome regions of the Peyer's patches, and mice deficient in the receptor for CCL20, CCR6, have been reported to be devoid of the CD11b(+) DCs in the dome regions. Here, we describe another chemokine specifically secreted from the FAE of mouse Peyer's patches, CCL9 (MIP-1gamma, CCF18, MRP-2). By in situ hybridization, we demonstrated that CCL9 mRNA was expressed by the FAE but not by the villus epithelium. At the protein level, CCL9 was detected on the FAE and on extracellular matrix structures within the dome regions of the Peyer's patches. By RT-PCR, we demonstrated that one of the putative receptors for CCL9, CCR1, was expressed by the Peyer's patch CD11b(+) DCs and in a chemotaxis assay, CD11b(+) DCs migrated toward CCL9. To compare the abilities of the chemokines CCL20 and CCL9 to recruit CD11b(+) DCs to the dome regions, we examined the in vivo distribution of these cells in CCR6-deficient, CCL9-blocked wild type, or CCL9-blocked CCR6-deficient mice. To our surprise, using a sensitive immunofluorescence analysis, we observed that CD11b(+) DCs were present in the dome regions of the CCR6-deficient mice. In contrast, Ab neutralization of CCL9 in vivo resulted in significant reduction of the CD11b(+) DC number in the subepithelial dome regions of Peyer's patches of both wild type and CCR6 -/- mice. Taken together, these results demonstrate an important role of CCL9 in CD11b(+) DC recruitment to the dome regions of mouse Peyer's patches.

Abstract
A sural nerve dissected from a recently dead patient displayed an unusual X-ray diffraction pattern, suggesting that in situ and at the time of the patient's death the myelin sheaths were in a swollen state. Diffraction patterns of the swollen type were also recorded from: (1) a sural nerve from the corpse of a neurologically healthy person after soaking the nerve with Ringer solution at pH 5.5; (2) sciatic nerves dissected from rat cadavers at increasing time after death. In all the cases the swollen patterns reversed to the native type upon superfusion with Ringer solution at pH 7.3. The postmortem effect is to decrease the pH of the fluids surrounding the nerves in the cadavers. Our experiments show that the early postmortem processes have the effect of acidifying PNS nerves and that as a consequence of acidification the myelin sheaths swell.

Taking advantage of the fast and accurate X-ray scattering techniques recently developed in our laboratory, we tackled the study of the structural alterations induced in myelin by malnutrition. Our work was performed on sciatic and optic nerves dissected from rats fed with either a normal or a low-protein caloric diet, as a function of age (from birth to 60 days). By way of electrophysiological controls we also measured (on the sciatic nerves) the height and velocity of the compound action potential. Malnutrition was found to decrease the amount of myelin and to impair the packing order of the membranes in the sheaths.

Abstract
X-ray scattering and electrophysiological experiments performed on toad sciatic nerves as a function of the exposure to either low temperature or tetracaine yielded the following results: (i) the main structural effect is to thicken the individual membranes, thus to stiffen the acyl chains and increase the repeat distance of the one-dimensional lattice, phenomena that are typical of lipid-containing systems with disordered chains; (ii) the electrophysiological effect is to decrease the amplitude and velocity of the compound action potential; (iii) the structural and physiological effects of the two agents are practically identical. Since the structural and the electrophysiological parameters have different origins in the nerves (the structure regards the myelin sheath, the electrical signals originate at the nodes of Ranvier) it is inferred that tetracaine and low temperature exert similar effects on the membranes of both the myelin sheath and the nodes of Ranvier. Also, since local anesthetics act by inhibiting the Na+ channels, these observations suggest that the acyl chain conformation modulates the channel function and thus the generation of action potential.

Abstract
The average turbid optical properties of the N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPA) polymer solution entrapped inside a polyacrylamide hydrogel (called an NIPA/PAAM gel system) were studied using a multiwavelength oblique-incidence reflectometer. The turbidity of such a system can be drastically changed by simply switching the temperature from below the low critical solution temperature of the NIPA, around 33 degrees C, to above. The absorption coefficient and the reduced scattering coefficient were obtained as a function of wavelength for samples with selected NIPA and blue dextran concentrations. It is found that the scattering of the optical phantom comes from the NIPA polymer chains and the absorption from the blue dextran. The turbid optical properties of an NIPA/PAAM gel system can be tuned to simulate biological tissues at a specific wavelength by varying compositions of NIPA and blue dextran and further modified by controlling the temperature.

Abstract
A patient with pericardial tamponade secondary to malignant pericardial effusion underwent pericardiocentesis followed by intrapericardial instillation of recombinant interferon alfa-2b (INTRON A; Schering-Plough; Kenilworth, NJ). The patient subsequently received a full course of chemotherapy and radiation therapy for her primary malignant tumor and experienced no recurrence of the pericardial effusion.

Abstract
Previous reports have indicated that benzothiophenes exhibit broad anti-inflammatory properties and inhibit human immunodeficiency virus-type 1 (HIV-1) replication. We show that the immunosuppressant cyclosporin A (CsA) and benzothiophene-2-carboxamide, 5-methoxy-3-(1-methyl ethoxy)-1-oxide (PD 144795) block the induction of p53 and NF-kappaB binding to the HIV-1 long terminal repeat (LTR) by the T cell receptor activator phytohemagglutinin. CsA and PD 144795 also inhibit the induction by phytohemagglutinin of the transcription mediated by an HIV-1 LTR fragment containing the p53 and NF-kappaB sites. These effects of PD 144795 on HIV-1 transcription correlate with its ability to inhibit the phosphatase activity of calcineurin and are similar to those previously described for CsA. Moreover, a constitutive active form of calcineurin is able to induce expression from the HIV-1 LTR in a p53- and NF-kappaB-dependent manner and PD 144795 is able to block this induction. These results demonstrate that the DNA binding of p53 to the HIV-1 LTR can be modulated by calcineurin and provide a framework to understand the anti-HIV properties of benzothiophene derivatives.

Abstract
We demonstrate a new approach for determining particle-size distribution in concentrated suspensions from spectral measurement of isotropic scattering coefficients by use of steady-state, continuous-wave photon-migration techniques. Successful recovery of particle-size distribution for TiO(2) suspensions in the form of log-normal functions is achieved through a regularized inverse algorithm, into which a synthesized scheme of Marquardt and Tikhonov regularizations has been incorporated. Our results for dense TiO(2) suspensions with three different particle concentrations are in excellent agreement with the size distribution as measured with x-ray sedimentation.

Abstract
Oblique incidence reflectometry is a simple and accurate method for measuring the absorption and the reduced-scattering coefficients of turbid media. We used this technique to deduce absorption and reduced-scattering spectra from wavelength-resolved measurements of the relative diffuse reflectance profile of white light as a function of source-detector distance. In this study, we measured the absorption and the reduced-scattering coefficients of chicken breast tissue in the visible range (400-800 nm) with the oblique incidence probe oriented at 0 degrees and 90 degrees relative to the muscle fibers. We found that the deduced optical properties varied with the probe orientation. Measurements on homogenized chicken breast tissue yielded an absorption spectrum comparable with the average of the absorption spectra for 0 degrees and 90 degrees probe orientations measured on the unhomogenized tissue. The reduced-scattering spectrum for homogeneous tissue was greater than that acquired for unhomogenized tissue taken at either probe orientation. This experiment demonstrated the application of oblique-incidence, fiber-optic reflectometry to measurements on biological tissues and the effect of tissue structural anisotropy on optical properties.

Abstract
We designed a quick and inexpensive system for spectral measurements of optical properties including absorption coefficient and reduced scattering coefficient. The system was based on oblique incidence reflectometry.[1] A broad band light source was coupled into an optic fiber to deliver light obliquely to turbid media. Nine detection optic fibers were used to collect the diffuse reflectance as a function of source-detector distance. The relative diffuse reflectance profile was used to deduce the absorption and reduced scattering spectra. The system was able to acquire data in a wavelength range of 256 nm within a fraction of a second.

Abstract
Twenty-one patients with malignant pleural effusion (MPE) were prospectively entered into a nonrandomized, single-armed study to evaluate the efficacy and safety of recombinant interferon (IFN) alpha-2b (INTRON A; Schering-Plough; Kenilworth, NJ) as an intrapleural palliative agent. From March 1989 through February 1993 (48 months), 21 patients were entered into the study. No symptomatic effusion recurred and no substantial side effects were associated with treatment. This suggests recombinant IFN alpha-2b represents a safe and effective intrapleural agent for the palliation of MPE.

Abstract
Gene diversity was studied in beetles collected from a poplar plantation at Ames, Iowa. The beetles are widely distributed throughout North America wherever poplars (Populus spp) occur. Of 38 loci interpretable by simple Mendelian criteria, 22 were polymorphic (58%). Nei's mean heterozygosity per locus was 20.1 +/- 4.0%. A mean 2.29 +/- 1.35 alleles per locus was detected. The foregoing levels of diversity are typical of Coleoptera. There were significant deviations from Hardy-Weinberg expectations at six loci, and of these loci, four deviations were judged to have been caused by technical problems in resolving heterozygotes. Twelve polymorphic loci are considered suitable to carry out studies on the breeding structure of this important pest.

Abstract
We have studied the interactions of the high-mobility-group-like proteins (C1a1, C1a2 and C1b) from the fruit fly Ceratitis capitata with DNA. Nitrocellulose filter binding assays, thermal denaturation studies and spectrofluorimetry of the complexes revealed the existence of specific and nonspecific interactions. Thermal denaturation curves showed that the three proteins stabilized the DNA, thus suggesting a preferential binding to double-stranded DNA. The calculation of the thermodynamic parameters of the interactions showed that the nonspecific bindings were characterized by low association constants (Ka) with values ranging from 2.7 X 10(4) M-1 to 2.0 X 10(6) M-1. Also, the cooperativity of these interactions was relatively high (cooperativity factor, w, values ranging over 20-35), and the number of nucleotides involved was low (1-3 base pairs). On the other hand, the existence of specific interactions between C1 proteins and DNA was suggested by two facts: the retention of C. capitata [3H]DNA in nitrocellulose filters was only a low percentage of total input DNA and there was a marked size dependence of the binding (25% retention of a 40-kb DNA and only 3% retention with a DNA of 1 kb). The specific bindings had higher Ka values than the nonspecific ones, and they also were cooperative. Some differences were observed between C1b and the C1a proteins about the way they interact with C. capitata DNA.

Abstract
1. CM-cellulose chromatography of a fraction soluble in 5% perchloric acid from Ceratitis capitata chromatin yields three proteins, C1a1, C1a2 and C1b, which have been purified to electrophoretical homogeneity. 2. C1a1, C1a2 and C1b analyse like high mobility group (HMG) non-histone chromosomal proteins, although they do not exactly correspond with those from vertebrates. It is proposed that C1 proteins, as well as Drosophila D1 [Rodríguez Alfageme et al. (1980) Chromosoma, 78, 1-31] are representative of a class of insect-specific HMG proteins. Tryptic fingerprints show that C1a1 and C1a2 are very similar, but C1b is a somewhat distinct protein. Circular dichroism studies have shown that these preparations do not appreciably fold on increasing ionic strength. 3. The interactions between DNA and C1 proteins have been studied. These proteins precipitate DNA in 0.15 M NaCl, 0.015 M sodium citrate and the precipitation curves are cooperative. Soluble complexes between C1 proteins and DNA could be prepared in low ionic strength media and their thermal denaturation profiles obtained. C1 proteins do not destabilize DNA under the conditions used to prepare the complexes but the three proteins stabilize DNA to a different degree. From these studies it has been concluded that the association constant of C1b to DNA is smaller than that of C1a1 and C1a2.
