Abstract
BACKGROUND Six-month adjuvant chemotherapy with S-1 is standard care for resected pancreatic cancer in Japan; however, the optimal duration has not been established. We aimed to evaluate the impact of duration of adjuvant chemotherapy with S-1. METHODS We performed a multicenter, randomized, open-label, phase II study. Patients with histologically proven invasive pancreatic ductal carcinoma, pathological stage I-III, and no local residual or microscopic residual tumor were eligible. Patients were randomized 1:1 to receive 6- or 12-month adjuvant chemotherapy with S-1. The primary endpoint was 2-year overall survival (OS). Secondary endpoints were disease-free survival (DFS) and feasibility. RESULTS A total of 170 patients were randomized (85 per group); the full analysis set was 82 in both groups. Completion rates were 64.7% (6-month group) and 44.0% (12-month group). Two-year OS was 71.5% (6-month group) and 65.4% (12-month group) (hazard ratio (HR): 1.143; 80% confidence interval CI 0.841-1.553; P = 0.5758). Two-year DFS was 46.4% (6-month group) and 44.9% (12-month group) (HR: 1.069; 95% CI 0.727-1.572; P = 0.6448). In patients who completed the regimen, 2-year DFS was 56.5% (6-month group) and 75.0% (12-month group) (HR: 0.586; 95% CI 0.310-1.105; P = 0.0944). Frequent (≥ 5%) grade ≥ 3 adverse events comprised anorexia (10.5% in the 6-month group) and diarrhea (5.3% vs. 5.1%; 6- vs. 12-month group, respectively). CONCLUSIONS In patients with resected pancreatic cancer, 12-month adjuvant chemotherapy with S-1 was not superior to 6-month therapy regarding OS and DFS.

Abstract
Experiences of virtual reality (VR) can easily break if the method of evaluating subjective user states is intrusive. Behavioral measures are increasingly used to avoid this problem. One such measure is eye tracking, which recently became more standard in VR and is often used for content-dependent analyses. This research is an endeavor to utilize content-independent eye metrics, such as pupil size and blinks, for identifying mental load in VR users. We generated mental load independently from visuals through auditory stimuli. We also defined and measured a new eye metric, focus offset, which seeks to measure the phenomenon of "staring into the distance" without focusing on a specific surface. In the experiment, VR-experienced participants listened to two native and two foreign language stimuli inside a virtual phone booth. The results show that with increasing mental load, relative pupil size on average increased 0.512 SDs (0.118 mm), with 57% reduced variance. To a lesser extent, mental load led to fewer fixations, less voluntary gazing at distracting content, and a larger focus offset as if looking through surfaces (about 0.343 SDs, 5.10 cm). These results are in agreement with previous studies. Overall, we encourage further research on content-independent eye metrics, and we hope that hardware and algorithms will be developed in the future to further increase tracking stability.

Abstract
The rise in population and aging has led to a significant increase in the number of individuals affected by common causes of vision loss. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial to avoid the consequences of visual impairment. However, in early stages, many visual problems are making it difficult to detect. Visual adaptation can compensate for several visual deficits with adaptive eye movements. These adaptive eye movements may serve as indicators of vision loss. In this work, we investigate the association between eye movement and blurred vision. By using Electrooculography (EOG) to record eye movements, we propose a new tracking model to identify the deterioration of refractive power. We verify the technical feasibility of this method by designing a blurred vision simulation experiment. Six sets of prescription lenses and a pair of flat lenses were used to create different levels of blurring effects. We analyzed binocular movements through EOG signals and performed a seven-class classification using the ResNet18 architecture. The results revealed an average classification accuracy of 94.7% in the subject-dependent model. However, the subject-independent model presented poor performance, with the highest accuracy reaching only 34.5%. Therefore, the potential of an EOG-based visual quality monitoring system is proven. Furthermore, our experimental design provides a novel approach to assessing blurred vision.

Abstract
Maintenance of home appliances can be tedious. Maintenance work can be physically demanding and it is not always easy to know the cause of a malfunctioning appliance. Many users need to motivate themselves to perform maintenance work and consider it ideal for home appliances to be maintenance-free. On the other hand, pets and other living creatures can be taken care of with joy and without much pain, even if they are difficult to take care of. To alleviate the hassle associated with the maintenance of home appliances, we propose an augmented reality (AR) system to superimpose an agent over the home appliance of concern who changes their behavior according to the internal state of the appliance. Taking a refrigerator as an example, we verify whether such AR agent visualization motivates users to perform maintenance work and reduces the associated discomfort. We designed a cartoon-like agent and implemented a prototype system using a HoloLens 2, which can switch between several animations depending on the internal state of the refrigerator. Using the prototype system, a Wizard of Oz user study comparing three conditions was conducted. We compared the proposed method (Animacy condition), an additional behavior method (Intelligence condition), and a text-based method as a baseline for presenting the refrigerator state. In the Intelligence condition, the agent looked at the participants from time to time as if it was aware of them and exhibited help-seeking behavior only when it was considered that they could take a short break. The results show that both the Animacy and Intelligence conditions induced animacy perception and a sense of intimacy. It was also evident that the agent visualization made the participants feel more pleasant. On the other hand, the sense of discomfort was not reduced by the agent visualization and the Intelligence condition did not improve the perceived intelligence or the sense of coercion further compared to the Animacy condition.

Abstract
The great saphenous vein is the conduit of choice for femoropopliteal or infrapopliteal bypass, but it is traditionally recommended that varicose vein grafts (VVGs) should not be used for bypass conduits owing to the risk of immediate rupture or long-term aneurysmal change. Herein, we report two cases of femoropopliteal bypass with VVGs. They achieved primary patency without aneurysmal formation after 32 and 17 months. Therefore, VVGs without morphologically conspicuous abnormalities are worth considering for usage as a vein graft.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Pancreatic duct stents are widely used to reduce the incidence of postoperative pancreatic fistula (POPF) after pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD); however, small stents may cause adverse effects, such as occlusion. Recently, we have tried placing a 7.5-Fr pancreatic duct stent to achieve more effective exocrine output from the pancreas; however, the association between pancreatic duct stent size and POPF remains unknown. METHODS Sixty-five patients with soft pancreatic texture who underwent PD were retrospectively analyzed. After dividing the pancreas, a pancreatic duct stent (stent size 4.0 in 29 patients, 5.0 in 18, and 7.5 Fr in 18) was placed in the main pancreatic duct. RESULTS Twenty-five of 65 patients with soft pancreatic texture (38.5%) developed POPF. POPF became less frequent as the pancreatic duct stent size increased (p = 0.003). The factors associated with POPF development were a 7.5-Fr pancreatic duct stent (p = 0.005), 5.0-Fr pancreatic duct stent (p = 0.031), and male sex (p = 0.008). Pancreatic duct stent size and pancreatic duct diameter did not differ between the POPF and non-POPF groups. DISCUSSION/CONCLUSIONS In patients with a soft pancreas, the placement of a 7.5-Fr pancreatic duct stent may reduce the incidence of POPF.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical value of nutritional and immunological prognostic scores as predictors of outcomes and to identify the most promising scoring system for patients with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) in a multi-institutional study. METHODS Data were retrospectively collected for 589 patients who underwent surgical resection for PDAC. Prognostic analyses were performed for overall (OS) and recurrence-free survival (RFS) using tumor and patient-related factors, namely neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio, Prognostic Nutritional Index (PNI), Glasgow Prognostic Score (GPS), modified GPS, C-reactive protein-to-albumin ratio, Controlling Nutritional Status score, and the Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index. RESULTS Compared with PDAC patients with high PNI values (≥46), low PNI (<46) patients showed significantly worse overall survival (OS) (multivariate hazard ratio (HR), 1.432; 95% CI, 1.069-1.918; p = 0.0161) and RFS (multivariate HR, 1.339; 95% CI, 1.032-1.736; p = 0.0277). High carbohydrate antigen 19-9 (CA19-9) values (≥450) were significantly correlated with shorter OS (multivariate HR, 1.520; 95% CI, 1.261-2.080; p = 0.0002) and RFS (multivariate HR, 1.533; 95% CI, 1.199-1.961; p = 0.0007). Stratification according to PNI and CA19-9 was also significantly associated with OS and RFS (log rank, P < 0.0001). CONCLUSIONS Our large cohort study showed that PNI and CA19-9 were associated with poor clinical outcomes in PDAC patients following surgical resection. Additionally, combining PNI with CA19-9 enabled further classification of patients according to their clinical outcomes.

Abstract
The dynamic structure factorS(Q,E), whereQandEare momentum and energy transfer, respectively, has been measured for liquid Sb, using inelastic x-ray scattering. A modified damped harmonic oscillator model function was applied to analyseS(Q,E) of liquid Sb and also to that of liquid Bi by Inuiet al(2015Phys. Rev.B92, 054206). The obtained excitation energy was in fairly good agreement with that predicted byab initiomolecular dynamics simulations on these liquid semi-metals. The excitation energy of the longitudinal acoustic mode in liquid Sb and liquid Bi exhibits flat-toppedQdependence whereas the lower excitation energy below the longitudinal acoustic excitation showsQ-gap behaviour. From the viscosity estimated from theQ-gap experimentally obtained, it is inferred that the lower energy excitation arises from the transverse acoustic excitation in the liquids.

Abstract
Background Some patients with the compression of the celiac trunk by the median arcuate ligament (MAL) suffer pancreatic artery aneurysms (PAAs) due to excessive blood flow from the superior mesenteric artery. These aneurysms are in peril because they are prone to rupture irrespective of size. Here, we present two cases of resection and reconstruction of PAAs caused by the compression of the celiac trunk by the MAL.
Case presentation Patient 1 was a 44-year-old man who was first diagnosed to have a visceral artery aneurysm with a diameter of 4 cm accidentally found by ultrasound examination at a regular medical check-up. Contrast-enhanced CT revealed the compression of the celiac trunk by the MAL and a PAA originating from the first jejunal artery. First, laparoscopic excision of the MAL followed by a stent placement into the celiac trunk was performed. Although the stent was patent, the PAA still grew. The patient underwent resection and reconstruction of the PAA. Reconstruction of the pancreatic arterial arcade was needed because clamping of the inferior pancreaticoduodenal artery (IPDA) resulted in disappearance of the hepatic arterial blood flow. The follow-up CT 2 years and 9 months after the operation revealed no recurrence of aneurysms and the patent anastomosis. Patient 2 was a 68-year-old man who presented with an epigastric pain. Contrast-enhanced CT revealed the compression of the celiac trunk by the MAL and a PAA approximately 6 cm in diameter originating from the IPDA. The PAA was surrounded by a relatively low-intensity area, suggesting impending rupture of the PAA. The patient underwent resection and reconstruction of the PAA under an emergency situation. Reconstruction of the pancreatic arterial arcade was needed because clamping of the inflow IPDA resulted in disappearance of the hepatic blood flow. The follow-up CT 1 year and 8 months after the operation revealed no recurrence of aneurysms and the patent anastomosis. Conclusions Although long-term follow-up is needed, resection and reconstruction is one of the therapeutic choices for PAAs caused by the compression of the celiac trunk by the MAL in order to prevent catastrophic aneurysm rupture.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIM We evaluated the relationship between low bone mineral density (BMD), also called osteopenia, and prognosis in patients who underwent resection for pancreatic cancer (PC). PATIENTS AND METHODS We enrolled 91 consecutive patients who underwent curative resections for PC between May 2009 and January 2019. Their BMDs were measured at the Th11 vertebra using computed tomography. Patients were then divided by age-adjusted standard BMD values into the osteopenia group (n=34) and the non-osteopenia group (n=57). Their overall survival (OS) and recurrence-free survival (RFS) were compared (log-rank test). RESULTS The two groups did not differ in age, BMI, tumor marker, operation time, blood loss, postoperative complications or stage. The osteopenia group had significantly worse 3-year rates for OS (46% vs. 30%, p=0.04) and RFS (41% vs. 26%, p=0.01). In multivariate analysis, osteopenia was an independent prognostic factor for RFS (HR=2.16, p=0.01). CONCLUSION Osteopenia is an adverse prognostic factor for patients with resected PC.

Abstract
Background Appendectomy for acute appendicitis (AA) is considered one of the most common emergency surgeries. However, emergency appendectomy accompanied with complex lesions such as extensive abscess formation is not recommended in most cases. Therefore, non-operative management followed by interval appendectomy (IA) for AA has been tried. Herein, we present three AA cases with specific etiology that underwent interval appendectomy. Case presentation Case 1: A 68-year-old man was diagnosed AA with intestinal malrotation and intra-abdominal abscesses. He initially treated with conservative therapy and underwent laparoscopic IA after detailed preoperative examination. Case 2: A 22-year-old man had been under treatment for pancolitis-type ulcerative colitis (UC), also bothered by right-lower abdominal pain several times a year. The appendix always appeared swollen on every CT taken during symptoms. He underwent laparoscopic IA; pathological finding revealed typical UC histological features in the resected appendix. After the surgery, he never suffered from terrible right lower abdominal pain. Case 3: A 69-year-old woman complaining a right lower abdominal pain had undergone CT examination, which revealed AA with appendiceal mass, irregular wall thickness of the cecum, and mediastinal and para-aortic lymph node swelling. The operation was carried out after conservative therapy. The pathological diagnosis revealed BRAF mutated colorectal carcinoma. She had received systematic chemotherapy after the surgery, and all metastatic lesions have completely disappeared. Conclusion Interval appendectomy provided us with much clearer anatomical information and precise therapeutic strategies, avoiding technical and general operative complications, and also induced fast recovery and short length of hospital stay. Interval appendectomy is a reasonable procedure and could be recommended in case of AA with some different etiology.

Abstract
There seemed to be characteristic risk factors in cirrhotic patients for posthepatectomy complications because these patients have less hepatic reserve as compared with noncirrhotic patients. The aim of the current study was to identify these characteristic risk factors in cirrhotic patients. We performed 419 primary hepatectomies for hepatocellular carcinoma. The patients were divided into the cirrhotic group (n = 198) and the noncirrhotic group (n = 221), and the risk factors for posthepatectomy complications were compared between the groups. Thirty-six cirrhotic patients (18.2%) experienced Clavien's Grade III or more complications. Tumor size, intraoperative blood loss, duration of operation, major hepatectomy (two or more segments), and necessity of blood transfusion were found to be significant risk factors in univariate analyses. Multivariate analysis revealed that major hepatectomy and intraoperative blood loss were independent risk factors for posthepatectomy complications in patients with cirrhosis. On the other hand, the duration of operation was only an independent risk factor for posthepatectomy complication in noncirrhotic patients. Cirrhotic patients should avoid a major hepatectomy and undergo a limited resection preserving as much liver tissue as possible and meticulous surgical procedures to lessen intraoperative blood loss are mandatory to prevent major posthepatectomy complications.

Abstract
Inelastic x-ray scattering (IXS) measurements were carried out on liquid Se50Te50 at temperatures up to 1323 K to investigate how the atomic dynamics changes with temperature through the semiconductor-metal transition. The acoustic mode was clearly observed in the dynamic structure factor and its energy was determined using a damped harmonic oscillator model. The dynamical sound speed obtained by IXS for [Formula: see text] nm-1 was found to behave similarly to the temperature dependence of ultrasonic sound velocity with a minimum near the semiconductor metal transition. The results can be explained by taking liquid Se50Te50 to be an inhomogeneous liquid consisting of metallic and semiconducting domains whose size is approximately 3 nm. The relaxation time obtained from frequency dependence of the dynamical sound speed was on a picosecond time scale.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The aim of this study was to clarify the impact of middle hepatic artery reconstruction on the outcomes of duct-to-duct biliary anastomosis after living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) using the left lobe. MATERIALS AND METHODS Among 258 patients who underwent LDLT using the left lobe, 216 patients who underwent hepatic artery reconstruction and one hepatic duct reconstruction with duct-to-duct interrupted anastomosis were divided into three groups: Group A (n = 123), one arterial stump with left hepatic artery reconstruction; Group B (n = 32), two arterial stumps with only left hepatic artery reconstruction; and Group C (n = 61), two arterial stumps with reconstruction of the left and middle hepatic arteries. The outcomes after LDLT were compared among the three groups. RESULTS No hepatic artery complications occurred. Group B had a significantly greater incidence of anastomotic biliary stricture than Group C. A multivariate analysis with Cox regression revealed that being in Group B was the only significant independent risk factor for postoperative anastomotic biliary stricture after LDLT. CONCLUSIONS Middle and left hepatic artery reconstruction is safe in LDLT and may prevent biliary stricture caused by dual hepatic artery reconstruction when the graft has left and middle hepatic artery stumps.

Abstract
669 Background: Although adjuvant chemotherapy with S-1 has improved overall survival and progression-free survival (PFS) in patients with resected pancreatic cancer, the duration evaluation of adjuvant chemotherapy with S-1 have not established yet. Methods: We did a randomized, multicenter, phase 2 trial undertaken at 15 hospitals in Japan. Patients who were Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance states of 0 or 1 and aged 20 years or older were eligible. Patients with resected pancreatic cancer were randomly assigned (in a 1:1 ratio) to receive S-1 [40 mg, 50 mg, or 60 mg according to body-surface area, orally administered twice a day for 28 days followed by a 14 day rest, every 6 weeks [one cycle], for up to four cycles (6 months)] or up to eight cycles (12 months). The primary end point was overall survival rate. Secondary endpoints included PFS and safety. Results: The population consisted of 82 patients in the S-1 for 6 months group and 82 patients in the S-1 for 12 months group. The 2-year overall survival rate was 71.4% in the S-1 for 6 months group and 65.4% in the S-1 for 12 months, and the median overall survival was 31.0 months in the S-1 for 6 months group and 26.3 months in the S-1 for 12 months group [hazard ratio (HR) 1.23, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.76-1.99, p = 0.377]. The PFS at 2 years was 56.8% in the S-1 for 6 months group, and 51.2% in the S-1 for 12 months. The HR for recurrence of S-1 for 6 months, compared with S-1 for 12 months, was 1.23 (95%CI 0.76-1.99, p = 0.392). Twenty-nine (35.3%) patients in the S-1 for 6 months group and 46 (56.0%) in the S-1 for 12 months group discontinued treatment before completion. In regard to patients completed treatment, the S-1 for 12 months group showed tendency to favorable prognosis on PFS compared with the S-1 for 6 months group (log-rank test; p = 0.175). Conclusions: In patients with resected pancreatic cancer, adjuvant chemotherapy with S-1 for 12 months is not superior to that for 6 months in terms of median overall survival and PFS. For patients who can tolerate adjuvant chemotherapy with S-1 for 6 months well, continuing treatment for up to 12 months may improve the prognosis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIM In order to overcome postoperative pancreatic fistula (POPF) after distal pancreatectomy (DP), we have developed a new simple technique-Clip on Staple method. PATIENTS AND METHODS In Clip on Staple method, pancreatic parenchyma was divided using a stapling device with a stepped-height staple design to make linear compression line, and thereafter, the full length of the staple line was reinforced by multiple clips. Clinical outcomes were retrospectively compared between Clip on Staple group (n=23) and Non-Clip group (n=38). RESULTS The incidence of clinically relevant POPF (CR-POPF) was significantly lower in the Clip on Staple group than in the Non-Clip group (4.3 and 36.8%, p=0.005). Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that only Clip on Staple method was an independent predictive factor of a decrease in the occurrence of CR-POPF. CONCLUSION The Clip on Staple method, a simple and easily applicable technique even in laparoscopic surgery, significantly reduced the occurrence of CR-POPF among patients undergoing DP.

Abstract
Management of portal vein thrombosis (PVT), especially advanced PVT involving the superior mesenteric vein (SMV), in living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) is challenging. There were 514 adults who underwent LDLT between 2005 and 2018 included in this retrospective study, and PVT was observed in 67 (13.0%) patients. The LDLT recipients with PVT were characterized by increased portal pressure at laparotomy (26.1 ± 6.0 versus 24.3 ± 5.9 mm Hg; P = 0.03) and at closure (16.8 ± 3.9 versus 15.6 ± 3.6 mm Hg; P = 0.02), increased operative blood loss (14.6 ± 29.7 versus 5.7 ± 6.3 L; P < 0.01), and decreased 1-year graft survival (83.5% versus 92.8%; P = 0.04). Among the 18 patients with atrophic or vanished portal vein on pre-LDLT computed tomography, significant portal atrophy was actually observed only in 1 (5.6%) patient during LDLT surgery. For advanced PVT (n = 7) involving SMV in era 1, we performed nonanatomical inflow reconstruction using interposition grafts, resulting in significant inflow problems in 4 (57.1%) patients. Thus, for the patients with advanced PVT (n = 4) in era 2, we abandoned nonanatomical reconstruction and applied extensive thrombectomy under ultrasound guidance with secure shunt ligation, resulting in no inflow problems and no graft loss. In conclusion, even for advanced PVT involving SMV, extensive thrombectomy under sonogram guidance followed by anatomical inflow reconstruction and shunt ligation is a legitimate strategy in adult LDLT with PVT.

Abstract
The pseudogap phenomenon in the cuprates is arguably the most mysterious puzzle in the field of high-temperature superconductivity. The tetragonal cuprate HgBa2CuO4+δ, with only one CuO2 layer per primitive cell, is an ideal system to tackle this puzzle. Here, we measure the magnetic susceptibility anisotropy within the CuO2 plane with exceptionally high-precision magnetic torque experiments. Our key finding is that a distinct two-fold in-plane anisotropy sets in below the pseudogap temperature T*, which provides thermodynamic evidence for a nematic phase transition with broken four-fold symmetry. Surprisingly, the nematic director orients along the diagonal direction of the CuO2 square lattice, in sharp contrast to the bond nematicity along the Cu-O-Cu direction. Another remarkable feature is that the enhancement of the diagonal nematicity with decreasing temperature is suppressed around the temperature at which short-range charge-density-wave formation occurs. Our result suggests a competing relationship between diagonal nematic and charge-density-wave order in HgBa2CuO4+δ.

Abstract
Background Wisteria floribunda agglutinin positive human Mac-2 binding protein glycosylation isomer (M2BPGi) has recently developed as a noninvasive serum marker of liver fibrosis. Liver transplant candidates usually have high serum levels of M2BPGi due to advanced cirrhosis. The aim of the present study was to elucidate the kinetics of serum M2BPGi after liver transplantation and the relationships between the level of M2BPGi and graft function. Methods Fifteen recipients who underwent living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) between June 2015 and January 2016 and whose pretransplant, postoperative day (POD) 1, POD 3, and POD 7 sera were available for measuring M2BPGi were enrolled in this study. Small-for-size syndrome (SFSS) was defined as the presence of cholestasis (total bilirubin >10 mg/dL) on POD 7 and intractable ascites (>1 L/day on POD 14 or >500 ml/day on POD 28) without other specific causes. Results The median of pretransplant M2BPGi was 9.75 cutoff index (C.O.I.) (range, 3.04-24.49). There was neither any correlation between pretransplant M2BPGi and Model for End-Stage Liver Disease scores (r=0.416, P=0.123) nor Child-Turcotte-Pugh scores (r=-0.221, P=0.428). The levels of M2BPGi dramatically decreased after LDLT (median; 1.48 on POD 1, 1.47 on POD 3, 1.49 on POD 7). However, serum levels of M2BPGi rose again on POD 7 in some recipients and all 4 recipients with serum levels of M2BPGi exceeding 3.00 C.O.I. succumbed to SFSS later. When the cutoff of M2BPGi on POD 7 for predicting SFSS was determined to be 3.06 according to its receiver operating characteristic curve, both the sensitivity and the specificity for predicting later SFSS were 100%. Conclusions The levels of M2BPGi dramatically decreased after LDLT. A re-rise of M2BPGi predicted later development of SFSS.

Abstract
The urban environments represent challenging areas for handheld device pose estimation (i.e., 3D position and 3D orientation) in large displacements. It is even more challenging with low-cost sensors and computational resources that are available in pedestrian mobile devices (i.e., monocular camera and Inertial Measurement Unit). To address these challenges, we propose a continuous pose estimation based on monocular Visual Odometry. To solve the scale ambiguity and suppress the scale drift, an adaptive pedestrian step lengths estimation is used for the displacements on the horizontal plane. To complete the estimation, a handheld equipment height model, with respect to the Digital Terrain Model contained in Geographical Information Systems, is used for the displacement on the vertical axis. In addition, an accurate pose estimation based on the recognition of known objects is punctually used to correct the pose estimate and reset the monocular Visual Odometry. To validate the benefit of our framework, experimental data have been collected on a 0.7 km pedestrian path in an urban environment for various people. Thus, the proposed solution allows to achieve a positioning error of 1.6⁻7.5% of the walked distance, and confirms the benefit of the use of an adaptive step length compared to the use of a fixed-step length.

Abstract
Demand for indoor navigation systems has been rapidly increasing with regard to location-based services. As a cost-effective choice, inertial measurement unit (IMU)-based pedestrian dead reckoning (PDR) systems have been developed for years because they do not require external devices to be installed in the environment. In this paper, we propose a PDR system based on a chest-mounted IMU as a novel installation position for body-suit-type systems. Since the IMU is mounted on a part of the upper body, the framework of the zero-velocity update cannot be applied because there are no periodical moments of zero velocity. Therefore, we propose a novel regression model for estimating step lengths only with accelerations to correctly compute step displacement by using the IMU data acquired at the chest. In addition, we integrated the idea of an efficient map-matching algorithm based on particle filtering into our system to improve positioning and heading accuracy. Since our system was designed for 3D navigation, which can estimate position in a multifloor building, we used a barometer to update pedestrian altitude, and the components of our map are designed to explicitly represent building-floor information. With our complete PDR system, we were awarded second place in 10 teams for the IPIN 2018 Competition Track 2, achieving a mean error of 5.2 m after the 800 m walking event.

Abstract
This paper presents a framework of incremental 3D cuboid modeling by using the mapping results of an RGB-D camera based simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) system. This framework is useful in accurately creating cuboid CAD models from a point cloud in an online manner. While performing the RGB-D SLAM, planes are incrementally reconstructed from a point cloud in each frame to create a plane map. Then, cuboids are detected in the plane map by analyzing the positional relationships between the planes, such as orthogonality, convexity, and proximity. Finally, the position, pose, and size of a cuboid are determined by computing the intersection of three perpendicular planes. To suppress the false detection of the cuboids, the cuboid shapes are incrementally updated with sequential measurements to check the uncertainty of the cuboids. In addition, the drift error of the SLAM is compensated by the registration of the cuboids. As an application of our framework, an augmented reality-based interactive cuboid modeling system was developed. In the evaluation at cluttered environments, the precision and recall of the cuboid detection were investigated, compared with a batch-based cuboid detection method, so that the advantages of our proposed method were clarified.

Abstract
X-ray diffraction and inelastic x-ray scattering measurements of liquid Ba8Ga16Sn30 have been carried out to investigate local structure and atomic dynamics in the liquid. The pair distribution function shows shorter and longer interatomic distances in the first coordination shell. The dynamic structure factor exhibits the inelastic excitations on both sides of the quasielastic central peak. The inelastic excitations disperse with increasing the momentum transfer, suggesting the longitudinal acoustic mode. We found a low energy excitation in addition to the longitudinal acoustic excitation in the dynamic structure factor and it reminds us a strong relationship with a rattling motion of a guest (Ba) atom in the solid state. The temperature dependence of the pair distribution function and the longitudinal acoustic excitation energy is very weak in a range from 600 to 900 °C. The result suggests that Ba and other atoms in the melt are located around minimum positions of the effective pair potential approximated as a harmonic one.

Abstract
This paper proposes a new approach to visualizing spatial variation of plant status in a tomato greenhouse based on farm work information operated by laborers. Farm work information consists of a farm laborer’s position and action. A farm laborer’s position is estimated based on radio wave strength measured by using a smartphone carried by the farm laborer and Bluetooth beacons placed in the greenhouse. A farm laborer’s action is recognized based on motion data measured by using smartwatches worn on both wrists of the farm laborer. As experiment, harvesting information operated by one farm laborer in a part of a tomato greenhouse is obtained, and the spatial distribution of yields in the experimental field, called a harvesting map, is visualized. The mean absolute error of the number of harvested tomatoes in each small section of the experimental field is 0.35. An interview with the farm manager shows that the harvesting map is useful for intuitively grasping the states of the greenhouse.

Abstract
AIM The clinical impact of pathological classification based on architectural pattern in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remains elusive in spite of its well-known and common feature. METHODS The prognostic impact of pathological classification was examined with prospective database. Three hundred and eighty HCC patients who underwent curative hepatectomy as an initial treatment in Kumamoto University were enrolled as a test cohort. The outcome was confirmed with a validation cohort in Kyushu University. RESULTS Macrotrabecular (macro-T) subtype (n = 38) and compact subtype (n = 43) showed similar biological and prognostic features. Both showed higher AFP level and worse overall survival than microrabecular (micro-T) subtype (n = 266). Multivariate analysis for overall survival revealed that DCP ≥ 40, multiple tumor and macro-T/compact subtype were associated with poor overall survival (risk ratio = 2.2, 1.6 and 1.6; p = 0.002, 0.020, and 0.047, respectively). Of note, 32% of macro-T/compact subtype showed early recurrence within 1 year, which showed substantially low (5%) 5 year overall survival, whereas 16% of micro-T/PG subtype did. Twenty-one percent of macro-T/compact subtype showed multiple intrahepatic metastases (≥ 4) or distant metastases, which resulted in non-curative treatment, whereas 5% of micro-T/PG subtype did. In validation cohort, macro-T/compact subtype was an independent predictor of worse overall survival. CONCLUSION Macro-T/compact subtype is biologically discriminated from micro-T and PG subtypes due to its aggressive features and poor prognosis after curative treatment. Additional treatment with curative hepatectomy on Macro-T/compact subtype should be discussed because of high possibility of systemic residual cancer cell.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The Controlling Nutritional Status (CONUT) score is an objective tool that is widely used to assess the nutritional status in patients, including those with cancer. The relationship between the CONUT score and prognosis in patients who have undergone hepatic resection has not been evaluated in a multi-institutional study. METHODS Data were retrospectively collected for 2461 consecutive patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) who had undergone hepatic resection with curative intent at 13 institutions between January 2004 and December 2015. Patients were assigned to two groups: preoperative CONUT scores ≤ 3 (low CONUT score) and ≥ 4 (high CONUT score). Clinicopathological characteristics, surgical outcomes, and long-term survival were compared using propensity score matching analysis. RESULTS Of the 2461 patients, 540 (21.9%) had high (≥ 4) and 1921 (78.1%) had low (≤ 3) preoperative CONUT scores. Overall, a high CONUT score was significantly associated with older age, female sex, low body mass index, low serum albumin, high serum total bilirubin, low lymphocyte count, low serum cholesterol, shorter prothrombin time, higher indocyanine green retention test at 15 min, Child-Pugh B (vs. A), liver cirrhosis, minor resection, shorter operation time, massive blood loss, blood transfusion, and postoperative complications. After propensity score matching, a higher CONUT score was significantly associated with poor overall survival (OS) and recurrence-free survival (RFS) using multivariate analysis. CONCLUSIONS This retrospective, multi-institutional analysis showed that, in patients who undergo curative hepatectomy for HCC, the preoperative CONUT score is predictive of worse OS and RFS, even after propensity score matching analysis.

Abstract
Phonon-phonon scattering dominates the thermal properties in nonmetallic materials, and it directly influences device performance in applications. The understanding of the scattering has been progressing using computational approaches, and the direct and systematic observation of phonon modes that include momentum dependences is desirable. We report experimental data on the phonon dispersion curves and lifetimes in an epitaxially grown ScN film using inelastic x-ray scattering measurements. The momentum dependence of the optical phonon lifetimes is estimated from the spectral width, and the highest-energy phonon mode around the zone center is found to possess a short lifetime of 0.21 ps. A comparison with first-principles calculations shows that our observed phonon lifetimes are quantitatively explained by three-body phonon-phonon interactions.

Abstract
Reconstruction-based change detection methods are robust for camera motion. The methods learn reconstruction of input images based on background images. Foreground regions are detected based on the magnitude of the difference between an input image and a reconstructed input image. For learning, only background images are used. Therefore, foreground regions have larger differences than background regions. Traditional reconstruction-based methods have two problems. One is over-reconstruction of foreground regions. The other is that decision of change detection depends on magnitudes of differences only. It is difficult to distinguish magnitudes of differences in foreground regions when the foreground regions are completely reconstructed in patch images. We propose the framework of a reconstruction-based change detection method for a free-moving camera using patch images. To avoid over-reconstruction of foreground regions, our method reconstructs a masked central region in a patch image from a region surrounding the central region. Differences in foreground regions are enhanced because foreground regions in patch images are removed by the masking procedure. Change detection is learned from a patch image and a reconstructed image automatically. The decision procedure directly uses patch images rather than the differences between patch images. Our method achieves better accuracy compared to traditional reconstruction-based methods without masking patch images.

Abstract
Despite possessing a limited number of neurones compared to vertebrates, honeybees show remarkable learning and memory performance, an example being 'dance communication'. In this phenomenon, foraging honeybees learn the location of a newly discovered food source and transmit the information to nestmates by symbolic abdomen vibrating behaviour, leading to navigation of nestmates to the new food source. As an initial step toward understanding the detailed molecular mechanisms underlying the sophisticated learning and memory performance of the honeybee, we focused on the neural immediate early genes (IEGs), which are specific genes quickly transcribed after neural activity without de novo protein synthesis. Although these have been reported to play an essential role in learning and memory processes in vertebrates, far fewer studies have been performed in insects in this regard. From RNA-sequencing analysis and subsequent assays, we identified three genes, Src homology 3 (SH3) domain binding kinase, family with sequence similarity 46 and GB47136, as novel neural IEGs in the honeybee. Foragers and/or orientating bees, which fly around their hives to memorize the positional information, showed induced expression of these IEGs in the mushroom body, a higher-order centre essential for learning and memory, indicating a possible role for the novel IEGs in foraging-related learning and memory processes in the honeybee.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Expanding patient selection beyond the Milan criteria in living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has long been a matter for debate. We have used the Kyushu University Criteria - maximum tumor diameter <5 cm or des-γ-carboxy prothrombin <300 mAU/ml - in LDLT for HCC since June 2007. The aim of the present study was to present the results of our prospective patient selection by Kyushu University Criteria and to confirm whether or not our criteria were justified. METHODS The entire study period was divided into the pre-Kyushu era (July 1999-May 2007) and the Kyushu era (June 2007-November 2014). Eighty-nine and 90 patients underwent LDLT for HCC in the pre-Kyushu era and the Kyushu era, respectively. RESULTS In the pre-Kyushu era, there were significant differences in recurrence-free and disease-specific survival between the beyond-Milan and the within-Milan patients. In the Kyushu era, however, the differences in recurrence-free and disease-specific survival between the beyond-Milan and the within-Milan patients disappeared. The 5-year overall patient survival in the Kyushu era was 89.4%. CONCLUSION Our selection criteria enabled a considerable number of beyond-Milan patients to undergo LDLT without jeopardizing the recurrence-free, and disease-specific, and overall patient survival.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In recent years, the establishment of new staging systems for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has been reported worldwide. The system combining albumin-bilirubin (ALBI) with tumor-node-metastasis stage, developed by the Liver Cancer Study Group of Japan, was called the ALBI-T score. METHODS Patient data were retrospectively collected for 357 consecutive patients who had undergone hepatic resection for HCC with curative intent between January 2004 and December 2015. The overall survival and recurrence-free survival were compared by the Kaplan-Meier method, using different staging systems: the Japan integrated staging (JIS), modified JIS, and ALBI-T. RESULTS Multivariate analysis identified five poor prognostic factors (higher age, poor differentiation, the presence of microvascular invasion, the presence of intrahepatic metastasis, and blood transfusion) that influenced overall survival, and four poor prognostic factors (the presence of intrahepatic metastasis, serum α-fetoprotein level, blood transfusion, and each staging system (JIS, modified JIS, and ALBI-T score)) that influenced recurrence-free survival. Patients for each these three staging system had a significantly worse prognosis regarding recurrence-free survival, but not with overall survival. The modified JIS score showed the lowest Akaike information criteria statistic value, indicating it had the best ability to predict overall survival compared with the other staging systems. CONCLUSIONS This retrospective analysis showed that, in post-hepatectomy patients with HCC, the ALBI-T score is predictive of worse recurrence-free survival, even when adjustments are made for other known predictors. However, modified JIS is better than ALBI-T in predicting overall survival.

Abstract
Large-for-size syndrome is defined by inadequate tissue oxygenation, which results in vascular complications and graft compression after abdominal closure in living donor liver transplantation recipients. An accurate graft reduction that matches the optimal liver volume for the recipient is essential. We herein initially present the feasibility and safety of graft reduction using a powered stapler to obtain an optimal graft size. From October 1996 to October 2015, a total of eight graft reductions were performed using a powered stapler (group A; n=4) or by the conventional method using a cavitron ultrasonic surgical aspirator and portal triad suturing (group B; n=4). The background, intraoperative findings and the post-operative outcomes of these eight patients were retrospectively investigated. There were no statistically significant differences in the background of the patients in the two groups. Graft reduction was successfully achieved without any intraoperative complications in group A, whereas intraoperative complications, such as bleeding and bile leakage, occurred in two patients of group B. No post-operative surgical complications were detected on computed tomography; moreover, the serum aspartate aminotransferase level normalized significantly earlier in group A (P<.05). In summary, graft reduction using a powered stapler was feasible and safe in comparison with the conventional method.

Abstract
Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDA) is associated with an immunosuppressive tumor‐microenvironment (TME) that supports the growth of tumors and mediates tumors enabling evasion of the immune system. Expression of programmed cell death ligand 1 (PD‐L1) and loss of human leukocyte antigen (HLA) class I on tumor cells are methods by which tumors escape immunosurveillance. We examined immune cell infiltration, the expression of PD‐L1 and HLA class I by PDA cells, and the correlation between these immunological factors and clinical prognosis. PDA samples from 36 patients were analyzed for HLA class I, HLA‐DR, PD‐L1, PD‐1, CD4, CD8, CD56, CD68, and FoxP3 expression by immunohistochemistry. The correlations between the expression of HLA class I, HLA‐DR, PD‐L1 or PD‐1 and the pattern of tumor infiltrating immune cells or the patients’ prognosis were assessed. PD‐L1 expression correlated with tumor infiltration by CD68+ and FoxP3+ cells. Low HLA class I expression was an only risk factor for poor survival. PD‐L1 negative and HLA class I high‐expressing PDA was significantly associated with higher numbers of infiltrating CD8+ T cells in the TME, and a better prognosis. Evaluation of both PD‐L1 and HLA class I expression by PDA may be a good predictor of prognosis for patients. HLA class I expression by tumor cells should be evaluated when selecting PDA patients who may be eligible for treatment with PD‐1/PD‐L1 immune checkpoint blockade therapies.

Abstract
Although Roux-en Y hepaticojejunostomy was previously recommended for the biliary reconstruction in liver transplantation for primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC), some recent reports showed no difference in the graft survival between Roux-en Y and duct-to-duct anastomosis in deceased-donor liver transplantation. On the other hand, considering the risk of recurrence and the short length of the bile duct of the graft, duct-to-duct biliary anastomosis has never been reported in a patient undergoing living-donor liver transplantation (LDLT) for PSC. A 45 year-old male underwent LDLT using a left-lobe graft donated from his brother. Cholangiography showed no lesion in his common bile duct and duct-to-duct anastomosis was chosen for him. Fifteen months later, he suffered cholangitis due to PSC recurrence and endoscopic retrograde cholangiography was performed. The stents were inserted into his B2 and B3, and he remains well. Because of the ability to easily manage biliary complication, duct-to-duct biliary reconstruction may become the first choice in LDLT for PSC without common bile duct lesions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Booklice, belonging to the order Psocoptera, are small household insect pests that are distributed worldwide. Liposcelis bostrychophila, a common home-inhabiting species of booklouse, infests old books, sheets of paper, and stored food. Recent entomological and serological studies demonstrated that L. bostrychophila accounted for the majority of detectable insects in house dust and could be a potent inducer of respiratory allergy. Our recent proteomic analysis identified a potent allergenic protein from L. bostrychophila, designated Lip b 1, and determined its partial amino acid sequences. METHODS Cloning of cDNAs for Lip b 1 was performed by large-scale transcriptome analysis (RNA-seq) and subsequent reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction. The full-length amino acid sequences deduced from Lip b 1 cDNAs were bioinformatically analyzed. The recombinant proteins of glutathione S-transferase (GST)-fused Lip b 1 were analyzed by Western blot and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. RESULTS Lip b 1 cDNAs encoding two types of 254-amino acid proteins were cloned. The clones shared 87% identity, and the deduced molecular weights and isoelectric points were consistent with those determined in our previous study. The two types of Lip b 1 proteins in the GST-fused form were similarly reactive with sera from allergic patients sensitized with L. bostrychophila. CONCLUSIONS Lip b 1 is a novel protein possibly causing booklouse allergy.

Abstract
Although it has been recognized that those who are positive for anti-hepatitis B core antibody (anti-HBcAb) and negative for hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) with normal liver function could be donors for living donor liver transplantation under appropriate prophylaxis, the negative impact of positive HBcAb on such donors themselves has not been reported. We present a case of a living donor with positive HBcAb, who donated his left lobe for his sister with unresectable giant hepatic hemangioma, and the donor himself developed a de novo hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) 10 years after donation. He had been lost from the follow-up program since 1 year after donation. Imaging studies showed a heterogeneously enhanced mass compatible with HCC, which was 9 cm in size with portal invasion into the anterior portal vein of the remnant liver. Re-laparotomy for hepatectomy with the removal of the tumor thrombus in the anterior portal vein of the remnant liver was carried out, and he is free from recurrence 6 months after surgery on prophylactic sorafenib. At our institute, 58 (9.6%) donors among the 603 living donors were anti-HBcAb positive and anti-HBsAg negative, and we started regular HCC surveillance using sonogram every 6 months for these patients.

Abstract
Hepatectomy needing simultaneous reconstruction of the hepatic artery and the portal vein in the operation for cholangiocarcinoma is a challenging procedure. We experienced three cases of left hepatectomy with simultaneous reconstructions of the right hepatic artery (RHA) and the right portal vein (RPV) in all of which the surgical procedures were performed in the same manner. At the initial step of the procedure, we confirmed that the RHA and the RPV at the porta hepatis as well as the proper hepatic artery and the main portal vein (MPV) proximal to the cancer involvement could be controlled by tapes, which meant the cancer could be resected by means of vascular reconstructions. All the vascular reconstructions were performed under loupe magnification. The mean periods of portal and arterial ischemic time of the remnant liver were 14 min. 32 sec. and 35 min. 58 sec., respectively. The mean operative time and the intraoperative blood loss were 627 min. and 804 mL, respectively. No serious postoperative complication occurred. By performing step-by-step well-established procedures, this complicated and challenging operation could be safely completed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Refractory ascites is a serious post-hepatectomy complication in cirrhotic patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). In order to avoid this complication, surgeons should preserve as much liver parenchyma as possible in performing hepatectomy in such patients. However, we still occasionally encounter refractory ascites even after limited or small hepatectomy. The aim of this study was to identify risk factors for post-hepatectomy refractory ascites in cirrhotic patients, focusing on limited or small hepatectomy. PATIENTS AND METHODS The data of 73 cirrhotic patients with HCC who underwent limited or small hepatectomy were analyzed. Limited or small hepatectomy was defined as hepatectomy equal to or of less than subsegmentectomy. We compared the clinicopathological factors between patients with and without postoperative refractory ascites. RESULTS Fourteen cirrhotic patients suffered postoperative refractory ascites. Total cholesterol, duration of operation, duration of Pringle maneuver, resection of segment VII, intraoperative blood loss, and intraoperative blood transfusion were found to be significant risk factors for postoperative refractory ascites in univariate analyses. Multivariate analysis revealed that resection of segment VII was an independent risk factor. CONCLUSION Resection of segment VII necessitates extensive dissection of the right triangular or coronary ligaments, which could explain that it was an independent risk factor for post-hepatectomy refractory ascites. Surgeons should avoid extensive dissection of these ligaments in order to avoid this detrimental complication.

Abstract
AIM We aimed to evaluate whether functional assessment of the future remnant liver is a predictor of postoperative morbidity after hepatic resection in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). METHODS One hundred forty-six patients who underwent hepatic resection for HCC were enrolled in this study. Gadolinium-ethoxybenzyl-diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid enhanced MRI (EOB-MRI) analysis for functional liver assessment was carried out before hepatic resection. The signal intensity in the remnant liver was measured and divided by the signal intensity of the major psoas muscle (the liver to major psoas muscle ratio, LMR) for standardization. The remnant liver function was calculated using the formula (LMR on the hepatobiliary phase/LMR on the precontrast image). Computed tomography liver volumetry was also carried out. The remnant functional liver was calculated as the remnant liver volume or volumetric rate × remnant liver function by EOB-MRI. RESULTS Morbidities developed in 19 (13.0%) patients. Morbidities associated with the liver occurred in 7 patients (4.7%). There was no mortality during surgery. Median remnant liver function scores using EOB-MRI and remnant functional liver using volumetric rate or volumetry were 1.82 (range, 1.25-2.96), 155.9 (range, 64.7-285.3), and 1027 (range, 369-2148), respectively. Logistic regression analysis identified the remnant functional liver volume as the only independent predictor for liver-related morbidity. CONCLUSION Remnant functional liver volume using computed tomography liver volumetry and EOB-MRI was a significantly useful predictor for liver-related morbidity after hepatic resection in patients with HCC.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Treatment strategies for lymph node (LN) metastasis after liver transplantation (LT) for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) have not been studied. PATIENTS AND METHODS The treatment modes and outcomes in patients with LN metastasis after LT (n=6) for HCC were reviewed. RESULTS The mean time from LT to LN recurrence was 2.0±1.3 years, and the locations of the LNs recurrences included the phrenic (n=2), common hepatic artery (n=2), inferior vena cava (n=1) and gastric (n=1) regions. Treatments included surgery alone (n=3), surgery followed by chemoradiation (n=1), radiation followed by chemotherapy (n=1), and chemotherapy, radiation and sorafenib (n=1). Although the patients receiving non-surgical treatments (n=3) died within 1.2 years, those who underwent surgical removal of the metastatic LNs survived 11.2 years, 4.5 years and 0.8 years, respectively, without any signs of re-recurrence. CONCLUSION Surgical resection is the only feasible and potentially curative treatment for LN metastasis after LT for HCC.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Inflammation-besed prognostic score including neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet/lymphocyte ratio (PLR), modified Glasgow prognostic score (mGPS) and prognostic nutritional index (PNI) have prognostic value in various malignancies. PATIENTS AND METHODS We retrospectively investigated their prognostic value in 213 patients with living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Disease-free survival (DFS) following LDLT was calculated; NLR, PLR, PNI and mGPS values in patients with and without recurrence were compared. Risk factors for HCC recurrence were identified by univariate and multivariate analyses. RESULTS Both NLR and PLR were significantly increased in patients with recurrence. Multivariate analysis showed that des-gamma-carboxy prothrombin (DCP) ≥300 mAU/ml, NLR ≥2.66, <3 months between last HCC treatment to LDLT were independent predictors of DFS. CONCLUSION Preoperative NLR was an independent, inflammation-based prognostic marker of DFS and was predictive of recurrence following LDLT.

Abstract
Background Primary hepatic angiosarcoma is a non-epithelial malignancy derived from sinusoidal endothelial cells, accounting for approximately 1.8% of primary hepatic malignancies. Diagnosis of primary hepatic angiosarcoma is complicated by difficulties in the qualitative radiological assessment of these tumors. Prognosis is very poor due to local recurrence and distant metastasis after liver resection or liver transplantation (LT). Case presentation This case report describes two patients with primary hepatic angiosarcoma who were diagnosed by histopathological examination of the explanted liver after LT. One patient had undergone living donor LT, and the other had undergone deceased donor LT. Neither showed evidence of malignancy on the pre-operative imaging tests. Conclusions Hepatic angiosarcoma has a very high relapse rate after LT. Pre-transplant liver biopsy may be necessary to distinguish diffuse hepatic angiosarcoma from tumors of other origin in patients with cryptogenic liver failure.

Abstract
Reconstruction of multiple venous orifices of a right lobe graft is a time-consuming and troublesome procedure in right lobe living-donor liver transplantation. In the current study, we present a new venous reconstruction technique for a right lobe graft with multiple and complex hepatic vein (HV) orifices, in which procurement of the recipient's left portal vein was performed in situ to keep the anhepatic period to a minimum. All of the HV orifices were reconstructed together at the back table, while maintaining patency of the recipient's systemic and splanchnic circulation. A homologous vein graft and veno-venous bypass were not necessary. All HVs were patent during the follow-up and the patient was free from complications. In conclusion, the present technique is readily available for reconstruction of complex and multiple HV tributaries, while avoiding a long anhepatic time and the use of veno-venous bypass.
