Relaxing Floors: Fractal Fluency in the Built Environment

This year's cover artists are members of a newly formed team of designers and scientists known as the Science and Design Laboratory, along with flooring manufacturing experts from the Mohawk Group. This unique collab-oration creates patterns for installation on the floors of versatile commercial, public and private spaces including airports, hospitals, offices and homes. Their goal is to create human-centered designs based on psychology experiments that investigate the positive impacts of viewing fractal patterns. These include reduced physiological stress levels, enhanced cognitive skills, and heightened concentration. Here, the fractal construction process and the resulting fractal characteristics of these designs are explained.

Diurnal cycles of salivary cortisol in older adults

Cortisol has a well-documented circadian pattern. However, recent studies have demonstrated that individual variation in diurnal cortisol patterns occurs in young adult populations. Since older adults experience altered sleep-wake cycles and changes in circadian rhythmicity, we may see even greater variations in diurnal cortisol patterns in older adults. This study examined salivary cortisol patterns in 48 community dwelling older adults. Participants (mean age 76+/-6) collected saliva every 2 h over a three-day period. Cortisol was assayed by using RIA. Cortisol cycles were defined as inconsistent, typical or flat based on the slopes of two sequential daily cortisol patterns. Demographic, physical, psychological and behavioral measures were tested for group differences using t-tests and chi-square analyses. Forty-eight percent of the sample had inconsistent cycles, 50% had typical cycles and 2% had flat cycles. This sample had a higher percentage of inconsistent cycles and fewer flat cycles than reported for young adults (p=0.008) (Psychoneuroendocrinology 22 (1997) 89). Those with inconsistent cycles were younger and reported higher caffeine and food intake than those with typical cycles. This study demonstrates that normal diurnal rhythms of cortisol can be maintained in older adults, while day-to-day variation may increase.

Behaviour and development of stunted and nonstunted Jamaican children

In order to examine the mechanism whereby stunted children have poor developmental levels, we compared the behaviour of stunted (N = 78) and nonstunted (N = 26) children aged 12 to 24 months, and examined the relationship of their behaviour to their developmental levels. The effect of nutritional supplementation with or without psychosocial stimulation on the stunted children's behaviour was also examined. The children were observed at home during 4 days over a period of 6 months. The stunted children showed significantly more apathy, and less enthusiasm and variety in exploring, were less happy and more fussy. Caretakers' vocalisations to them were less warm or instructive. Stunted children's activity level, exploratory and happy behaviours were predictive of change in developmental levels measured on the Griffiths Scales, from enrolment to 12 and 24 months later. Supplementation predicted mental age at 12 and 24 months after enrolment, however, it had no significant effect on behaviour.

Complex de novo rearrangement involving four chromosomes and ten break points with interstitial deletions and duplication

We describe an unusual de novo case of two interstitial deletions (5q22----5q31; 9q13----9p22) and one duplication (9q22----9p34) resulting from a 10-breakpoint, complex chromosome rearrangement of chromosomes 1, 5, 8, and 9 in a profoundly retarded woman.

Epidural morphine by continuous infusion with an external pump for pain management in oncology patients

Ten patients with advanced malignancies and severe pain were given epidural morphine (EDM) by continuous infusion. The pain had been treated previously with large doses of oral or parenteral narcotics, without success. The pain was disabling in all the cases. The total dose of morphine administered was 10-90 mg per day; median dose was 25 mg. Treatment lasted from 9 to 400 days. Pain relief was complete in seven patients, near complete in two, and moderate in one. Five patients became fully ambulatory. Two patients were treated as outpatients and resumed work activities. No central nervous system or gastrointestinal adverse effects, respiratory depression, or pruritus were noted. One patient developed urinary retention. EDM by continuous infusion produced constant pain relief for prolonged periods. This technique is safe for analgesia in oncology patients and suited for outpatient management.

Stature and age as factors in the growth of second metacarpal cortical bone in moderately malnourished children

The association of stature and age with measures of second metacarpal cortical bone growth is investigated in a sample of 1586 radiographs taken from Guatemalan Ladino children aged 1-7 years in a setting of endemic mild-to-moderate malnutrition. For given stature, chronological age is positively associated with cortical thickness and cortical area and negatively associated with periosteal and medullary diameter. These different partial correlations are seen as evidence of different kinds of growth. Correlations of cortical bone variables with body size within a chronological age are shown to derive from the overall relationship between age, stature, and measures of cortical bone.
