Predictive performance of multi-model ensemble forecasts of COVID-19 across European nations

Background: Short-term forecasts of infectious disease contribute to situational awareness and capacity planning. Based on best practice in other fields and recent insights in infectious disease epidemiology, one can maximise forecasts' predictive performance by combining independent models into an ensemble. Here we report the performance of ensemble predictions of COVID-19 cases and deaths across Europe from March 2021 to March 2022.

Methods: We created the European COVID-19 Forecast Hub, an online open-access platform where modellers upload weekly forecasts for 32 countries with results publicly visualised and evaluated. We created a weekly ensemble forecast from the equally-weighted average across individual models' predictive quantiles. We measured forecast accuracy using a baseline and relative Weighted Interval Score (rWIS). We retrospectively explored ensemble methods, including weighting by past performance.

Results: We collected weekly forecasts from 48 models, of which we evaluated 29 models alongside the ensemble model. The ensemble had a consistently strong performance across countries over time, performing better on rWIS than 91% of forecasts for deaths (N=763 predictions from 20 models), and 83% forecasts for cases (N=886 predictions from 23 models). Performance remained stable over a 4-week horizon for death forecasts but declined with longer horizons for cases. Among ensemble methods, the most influential choice came from using a median average instead of the mean, regardless of weighting component models.

Conclusions: Our results support combining independent models into an ensemble forecast to improve epidemiological predictions, and suggest that median averages yield better performance than methods based on means. We highlight that forecast consumers should place more weight on incident death forecasts than case forecasts at horizons greater than two weeks.

Large elliptical nanostructured gradient-index microlens

We demonstrate the feasibility of the development of a gradient-index elliptical microlens with a size of 75×125  μm using nanostructured glass technology. The gradient index is obtained by means of a discrete internal structure composed of two glasses with feature sizes much smaller than the wavelength of the incident light. A modified photonic crystal fiber-drawing technique is used for the lens fabrication. The elliptical shape of the lens is obtained by a novel final drawing stage where the spherically symmetric lens preform is drawn into an elliptical form by collapsing two large air holes placed in the preform during assembly. The effective focal lengths of 160 and 260 μm for the orthogonal axes are obtained experimentally for the fabricated lens, and show good agreement with those predicted by the effective medium theory and the full-wave beam propagation simulations.

Large diameter nanostructured gradient index lens

In this paper we report on the development and optical properties of nanostructured gradient index microlenses with good chromatic behavior. We introduce a new fabrication concept for the development of large diameter nanostructured gradient index microlenses based on quantized gradient index profiles and the use of nanostructured meta-rods. We show a dependence of the quality of performance on the number of refractive index levels and the lens diameter. Measurements carried out at 633 and 850 nm show good optical properties and similar focal lengths for both wavelengths.

A patient was observed who came with the following symptoms persisting for six months: paraesthesia in the lower and upper limbs, weakening of muscle strength, difficulties in walking. The high value of the mean cell volume in blood morphologic examination called attention to the possibility of vitamin B12 deficiency which had not yet manifested itself as anaemia. Further studies confirmed this suggestion. As the result of the treatment with vitamin B12 full normalization of the nervous system condition and results of examinations was achieved.

Among the organ involvements complicating acute leukaemias infiltrations in the visual organ are less frequent. A case is described of acute medullary leukaemia in an adult with exudate in the anterior chamber and infiltrations in the conjunctiva of the eyeball and eyelids. Chemotherapy and local radiotherapy controlled these complications.

An improved technique for simultaneous recording of action potential and auditory brainstem responses

A simple method for the assessment of central conduction time in auditory brainstem response (ABR) cases with distorted or absent wave I and the technical problems involved are discussed. New electrodes systems for extra/transtympanic recording, artifact-free acoustic stimulation and a combined recording of the large amplitude SP/AP complex and small ABR waveforms are described. The need for external adjustment of the AP/wave V amplitude ratio has been demonstrated in order to obtain the satisfactory recording.

Variation in song patterns of Antipodean Teleogryllus species (Orthoptera: Gryllidae) and a proposed phenetic classification

The stridulations of eight sample populations of Teleogryllus commodus servillei (Saussure) and T. oceanicus (Le Guillou) were recorded and analyzed. Sokal's "distance coefficient" formula was used to derive a phenetic classification of the populations. The analysis indicates the same relationships as were previously indicated, by Chen et al. (1967) on morphological evidence, and by Lim et al. (1969) on cytological study.
