Abstract
Objective: To explore potential predictors of refractory Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia (RMPP) in early stage. Methods: The prospective multicenter study was conducted in Zhejiang, China from May 1st, 2019 to January 31st, 2020. A total of 1 428 patients with fever >48 hours to <120 hours were studied. Their clinical data and oral pharyngeal swab samples were collected; Mycoplasma pneumoniae DNA in pharyngeal swab specimens was detected. Patients with positive Mycoplasma pneumoniae DNA results underwent a series of tests, including chest X-ray, complete blood count, C-reactive protein, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), and procalcitonin. According to the occurrence of RMPP, the patients were divided into two groups, RMPP group and general Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia (GMPP) group. Measurement data between the 2 groups were compared using Mann-Whitney U test. Logistic regression analyses were used to examine the associations between clinical data and RMPP. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were used to analyse the power of the markers for predicting RMPP. Results: A total of 1 428 patients finished the study, with 801 boys and 627 girls, aged 4.3 (2.7, 6.3) years. Mycoplasma pneumoniae DNA was positive in 534 cases (37.4%), of whom 446 cases (83.5%) were diagnosed with Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia, including 251 boys and 195 girls, aged 5.2 (3.3, 6.9) years. Macrolides-resistant variation was positive in 410 cases (91.9%). Fifty-five cases were with RMPP, 391 cases with GMPP. The peak body temperature before the first visit and LDH levels in RMPP patients were higher than that in GMPP patients (39.6 (39.1, 40.0) vs. 39.2 (38.9, 39.7) ℃, 333 (279, 392) vs. 311 (259, 359) U/L, both P<0.05). Logistic regression showed the prediction probability π=exp (-29.7+0.667×Peak body temperature (℃)+0.004×LDH (U/L))/(1+exp (-29.7+0.667×Peak body temperature (℃)+0.004 × LDH (U/L))), the cut-off value to predict RMPP was 0.12, with a consensus of probability forecast of 0.89, sensitivity of 0.89, and specificity of 0.67; and the area under ROC curve was 0.682 (95%CI 0.593-0.771, P<0.01). Conclusion: In MPP patients with fever over 48 to <120 hours, a prediction probability π of RMPP can be calculated based on the peak body temperature and LDH level before the first visit, which can facilitate early identification of RMPP.

Abstract
RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES We aimed to compare superb microvascular imaging (SMI)-based radiomics methods, and contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS)-based radiomics methods to the American College of Radiology Thyroid Imaging Reporting and Data System (ACR TI-RADS) for classifying thyroid nodules (TNs) and reducing unnecessary fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) rate. MATERIALS AND METHODS This retrospective study enrolled a dataset of 472 pathologically confirmed TNs. Radiomics characteristics were extracted from B-mode ultrasound (BMUS), SMI, and CEUS images, respectively. After eliminating redundant features, four radiomics scores (Rad-scores) were constructed. Using multivariable logistic regression analysis, four radiomics prediction models incorporating Rad-score and corresponding US features were constructed and validated in terms of discrimination, calibration, decision curve analysis, and unnecessary FNAB rate. RESULTS The diagnostic performance of the BMUS + SMI radiomics method was better than ACR TI-RADS (area under the curve [AUC]: 0.875 vs. 0.689 for the training cohort, 0.879 vs. 0.728 for the validation cohort) (P < 0.05), and comparable with BMUS + CEUS radiomics method (AUC: 0.875 vs. 0.878 for the training cohort, 0.879 vs. 0.865 for the validation cohort) (P > 0.05). Decision curve analysis showed that the BMUS+SMI radiomics method could achieve higher net benefits than the BMUS radiomics method and ACR TI-RADS when the threshold probability was between 0.13 and 0.88 in the entire cohort. When applying the BMUS+SMI radiomics method, the unnecessary FNAB rate reduced from 43.4% to 13.9% in the training cohort and from 45.6% to 18.0% in the validation cohorts in comparison to ACR TI-RADS. CONCLUSION The dual-modal SMI-based radiomics method is convenient and economical and can be an alternative to the dual-modal CEUS-based radiomics method in helping radiologists select the optimal clinical strategy for TN management.

First Report of Nigrospora sphaerica causing Leaf Spot on Rhododendron simsii in China. PLANT DISEASE 2024. Abstract
Rhododendron simsii (indoor azalea) is widely cultivated for its high ornamental value (Xu et al. 2021). In April to May 2023, a leaf spot disease occurred in a field study at the Baili Azalea Forest Area (27°12'N, 105°48'E), Guizhou Province, China. About 500 plants were investigated, and the results showed that the incidence of leaf spot was 20 ~ 30%. To study this disease, 10 plants showing severe symptoms were collected. Initially, the symptoms were round or irregularly shaped brown spots (1 to 10 mm). With time, the spots enlarged and merged. Symptomatic leaves were washed with sterile distilled water, and 5 × 5 mm pieces of the infected tissues were removed. After surface sterilization (30 s with 75% ethanol, 2 min with 3% NaOCl, then washed three times with sterilized distilled water), the leaf pieces were dried and placed on potato dextrose agar (PDA) and incubated at 25℃ for 5 days. Fungal colonies developed from leaf tissues, and the germinated spores were transferred onto PDA for further purification and morphological observation. Three isolates (GUBJ23, GUBJ24, and GUBJ12) with similar morphology were obtained from five affected leaves. The representative strain GUBJ23 was selected for further study. On PDA the mycelium was initially white but with sporulation turned gray and then black. Black, single-celled conidia, spherical to sub-spherical, from 11.80 to 21.39 × 13.38 to 21.83 μm (n = 50) in diameter were borne singly on hyaline vesicles at the tips of conidiophores. These morphological characteristics were similar to those of Nigrospora sphaerica (Wang et al. 2017). To confirm the identification, primer pairs for the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region (ITS5/ITS4), β-tubulin (TUB2) (Bt-2a/Bt-2b), and the translation elongation factor 1-alpha (TEF1-α) (EF1-728F/EF1-986R), were used for PCR amplification of DNA from strain GUBJ23 (Carbone and Kohn 1999; Glass et al. 1995; White et al. 1990). The resulting sequences were deposited in GenBank with accession numbers OR818025 (ITS), OR835150 (TUB2), and OR835147 (TEF1-α). BLAST searches of the sequences revealed 99.80% identity (503/504 bp) of the ITS sequence, 100.00% identity (395/395 bp) of the TUB2 sequence, and 100.00% identity of the TEF1-α sequence (241/241 bp) with N. sphaerica LC7294 (accessions KX985932, KY019602, and KY019397, respectively.) Based on a combined dataset of ITS, TEF1-α, and TUB2 sequences, a phylogenetic tree was constructed using the maximum likelihood method and confirmed that isolates GUBJ23, GUBJ24, and GUBJ12 were N. sphaerica (Wang et al. 2017). Leaves of three healthy R. simsii plants were spray-inoculated with a spore suspension (105 conidia/mL), and an additional three plants were sprayed with sterile water. These plants were incubated at 25℃ in 75% relative humidity. After 5 to 7 days of inoculation, 0.5 to 1.8 mm spots appeared on the leaves. At 10 to 14 days after inoculation, grayish brown, semicircular or irregular lesions appeared on the leaves, usually with a diameter of 0.8 to 3 mm. The symptoms were like symptoms seen on naturally infected leaves, while the control leaves remained asymptomatic. The pathogen was re-isolated from diseased leaves and identified by morphological characterization and molecular analyses (ITS, TUB and TEF1-α), and the reisolated pathogen was identical to N. sphaerica. Thus completing Koch's postulates. According to previous research, N. sphaerica is a widely distributed phytopathogenic fungus that has a wide host range (Wang et al. 2017). This study is the first to identify N. sphaerica as the cause of leaf spot disease in R. simsii. Given the popularity of R. simsii as a pot plant and landscape shrub in Asia and othr regions, the occurrence of leaf spot disease seriously affects its ornamental and economic value. Therefore, it is crucial to establish and implement effective disease management practices to reduce impact of the disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND American College of Radiology (ACR) Thyroid Imaging Reporting and Data System (TI-RADS, TR) 4 and 5 thyroid nodules (TNs) demonstrate much more complicated and overlapping risk characteristics than TR1-3 and have a rather wide range of malignancy possibilities (> 5%), which may cause overdiagnosis or misdiagnosis. This study was designed to establish and validate a dual-modal ultrasound (US) radiomics nomogram integrating B-mode ultrasound (BMUS) and contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) imaging to improve differential diagnostic accuracy and reduce unnecessary fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) rates in TR 4-5 TNs. METHODS A retrospective dataset of 312 pathologically confirmed TR4-5 TNs from 269 patients was collected for our study. Data were randomly divided into a training dataset of 219 TNs and a validation dataset of 93 TNs. Radiomics characteristics were derived from the BMUS and CEUS images. After feature reduction, the BMUS and CEUS radiomics scores (Rad-score) were built. A multivariate logistic regression analysis was conducted incorporating both Rad-scores and clinical/US data, and a radiomics nomogram was subsequently developed. The performance of the radiomics nomogram was evaluated using calibration, discrimination, and clinical usefulness, and the unnecessary FNAB rate was also calculated. RESULTS BMUS Rad-score, CEUS Rad-score, age, shape, margin, and enhancement direction were significant independent predictors associated with malignant TR4-5 TNs. The radiomics nomogram involving the six variables exhibited excellent calibration and discrimination in the training and validation cohorts, with an AUC of 0.873 (95% CI, 0.821-0.925) and 0.851 (95% CI, 0.764-0.938), respectively. The marked improvements in the net reclassification index and integrated discriminatory improvement suggested that the BMUS and CEUS Rad-scores could be valuable indicators for distinguishing benign from malignant TR4-5 TNs. Decision curve analysis demonstrated that our developed radiomics nomogram was an instrumental tool for clinical decision-making. Using the radiomics nomogram, the unnecessary FNAB rate decreased from 35.3 to 14.5% in the training cohort and from 41.5 to 17.7% in the validation cohorts compared with ACR TI-RADS. CONCLUSION The dual-modal US radiomics nomogram revealed superior discrimination accuracy and considerably decreased unnecessary FNAB rates in benign and malignant TR4-5 TNs. It could guide further examination or treatment options.

[Spatial autocorrelation and related factors of stroke mortality in Zhejiang Province based on spatial panel model in 2015-2020]. Abstract
Objective: To explore the spatial autocorrelation and macro influencing factors of stroke mortality in Zhejiang Province in 2015-2020 and provide a scientific basis for stroke prevention and control strategy. Methods: The data on stroke death were obtained from Zhejiang Chronic Disease Surveillance System. The spatial distribution of stroke mortality was explored by mapping and spatial autocorrelation analysis. The spatial panel model analyzed the correlation between stroke mortality and socioeconomic and healthcare factors. Results: From 2015 to 2020, the average stroke mortality was 68.38/100 thousand. The standard mortality of stroke was high in the areas of east and low in the west, high in the south and low in the north. Moreover, positive spatial autocorrelation was observed (Moran's I=0.274-0.390, P<0.001). Standard mortality of stroke was negatively associated with per capita gross domestic product (GDP) (β=-0.370, P<0.001), per capita health expenditure (β=-0.116, P=0.021), number of beds per thousand population (β=-0.161, P=0.030). Standard mortality of ischemic stroke was negatively associated with per capita GDP (β=-0.310, P=0.002) and standard management rate of hypertension (β=-0.462, P=0.011). Standard mortality of hemorrhagic stroke was negatively associated with per capita GDP (β=-0.481, P<0.001), per capita health expenditure (β=-0.184, P=0.001), number of beds per thousand population (β=-0.288, P=0.001) and standard management rate of hypertension (β=-0.336, P=0.029). Conclusions: A positive spatial correlation existed between stroke mortality in Zhejiang Province in 2015-2020. We must focus more on preventing and controlling strokes in relatively backward economic areas. Moreover, to reduce the mortality of stroke, increasing the investment of government medical and health funds, optimizing the allocation of medical resources, and improving the standard management rate of hypertension are important measures.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the impact of lung metastases on the prognosis of patients with gestational trophoblastic neoplasia (GTN). Methods: Patients with International Federation of Gynaecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) stage Ⅰ-Ⅲ GTN receiving primary chemotherapy in Peking Union Medical College Hospital between July 2014 and December 2018 were retrospectively analyzed and divided into group 1 with lung metastasis and group 2 without lung metastasis. The baseline characteristics and treatment outcomes of the two groups were compared. The optimal cut-off values of the diameter of largest lung nodule associated with recurrence were identified by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. Logistic regression analyses were performed to identify risk factors for prognosis. Survival analysis was performed by Kaplan-Meier method and Log rank test. Results: Of the 381 GTN patients enrolled (216 with lung metastases and 165 without lung metastases), the pretreatment β human chorionic gonadotrophin [median: 12 572 IU/L (1 832-51 594 IU/L) vs. 5 614 IU/L (559-26 140 IU/L), P=0.001] and FIGO score [median: 3 (1-6) vs. 2 (1-4), P=0.038] were significantly higher in patients with lung metastases than those without lung metastases. In patients with FIGO score≥5, the emergence of resistance (26.76% vs. 10.26%, P=0.036) and median number of chemotherapy courses to achieve complete remission [6 (6-8) vs. 5 (4-6), P<0.001] were significantly higher than patients with lung metastases. In patients with FIGO score 0-4, no significant difference was found in the treatment outcomes between the two groups(P=0.833). Among all patients with lung metastases, the ROC curve showed a sensitivity and specificity of 62.5% and 78.8%, respectively, for predicting recurrence when the length of the largest lung nodule was 1.6 cm, with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.711 (95% CI: 0.550, 0.871, P=0.044). Multivariate logistic regression analysis suggested a significantly higher recurrence rate when the largest lung nodule was ≥1.6 cm (OR=7.394, 95% CI: 1.003, 54.520, P=0.049). The 1-year disease-free survival rate was significantly lower in patients with the largest lung nodule ≥1.6 cm than in patients with the nodule <1.6 cm (98.2% vs. 82.4%, P=0.001). Conclusions: Lung metastasis is associated with increased first-line chemotherapy resistance in patients with FIGO scores≥5. The diameter of the largest lung metastatic nodule ≥1.6 cm is an effective factor for predicting recurrence.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Bone mineral density screening prior to initiating aromatase inhibitor therapy was associated with lower incident bone fractures and healthcare resource utilization among postmenopausal breast cancer survivors. INTRODUCTION Postmenopausal women with hormone receptor-positive breast cancer (BC) often receive aromatase inhibitor (AI) therapy. However, AIs induce bone loss and BC survivors are at an increased risk of bone fractures. This study determined whether receipt of baseline dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) screening is associated with decreased incident fractures and lower healthcare resource utilization. METHODS We retrospectively analyzed 22,713 stage 0-III primary BC survivors who received AI therapy ≤ 1 year prior to BC diagnosis from the Medicare-Linked Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End-Results database. We categorized DXA screening for those who had a procedural claim within 12 months prior through 6 months after first AI claim. We used propensity score methods to assess the association of DXA screening with bone fractures and health resource utilization. RESULTS Of the study cohort, 62% received a DXA screening. Women with comorbid dementia, renal disease, and congestive heart failure were less likely to receive a DXA. After adjusting for confounders, BC survivors who received a DXA had a 32% decreased risk of any bone fracture compared to those who did not (hazard ratio (HR): 0.68, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.60-0.76, p < 0.001). Similarly, those who received a DXA were less likely to be hospitalized (HR 0.73 (0.62-0.86)) or use outpatient services (HR 0.85 (0.74-0.97)). CONCLUSIONS Bone density screening is associated with decreased incident bone fractures and a lower likelihood of utilizing healthcare resource for fracture-related events. Postmenopausal BC survivors treated with AIs should undergo appropriate bone density screening to reduce morbidity, mortality, and health care expenses.

Abstract
Background Alectinib, a second-generation anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI), is highly effective in advanced ALK-rearranged non-small-cell lung cancer and represents a standard first-line therapy. New strategies are needed, however, to delay resistance. We conducted a phase I/II study to assess the safety and efficacy of combining alectinib with bevacizumab, a monoclonal antibody against vascular endothelial growth factor. Patients and methods Patients with advanced ALK-rearranged non-squamous non-small-cell lung cancer were enrolled. The phase I portion employed a dose de-escalation strategy with alectinib and bevacizumab starting at the individual standard doses. The primary objective was to determine the recommended phase II dose (RP2D). In phase II, the primary objective was to evaluate the safety of the combination at the RP2D; the secondary objective was to determine extracranial and intracranial efficacy. Results Eleven patients were enrolled between September 2015 and February 2020. Most patients (82%) had baseline brain metastases. Six patients (55%) were treatment-naive; five (46%) had received prior ALK TKIs (crizotinib, n = 3; ceritinib, n = 1; crizotinib then brigatinib, n = 1). No dose-limiting toxicities occurred. RP2D was determined as alectinib 600 mg orally twice daily plus bevacizumab 15 mg/kg intravenously every 3 weeks. Three patients experienced grade 3 treatment-related adverse events: pneumonitis related to alectinib, proteinuria related to bevacizumab, and hypertension related to bevacizumab. Treatment-related intracranial hemorrhage was not observed. Six (100%) of six treatment-naive patients and three (60%) of five ALK TKI-pretreated patients had objective responses; median progression-free survival was not reached (95% confidence interval, 9.0 months-not reached) and 9.5 months (95% confidence interval, 4.3 months-not reached), respectively. Intracranial responses occurred in four (100%) of four treatment-naive and three (60%) of five TKI-pretreated patients with baseline brain metastases. The study was stopped prematurely because of slow accrual. Conclusions Alectinib plus bevacizumab was well tolerated without unanticipated toxicities or dose-limiting toxicities. Alectinib plus bevacizumab is safe in patients with advanced ALK-rearranged non-small-cell lung cancer. Bevacizumab combined with alectinib does not increase risk of intracranial hemorrhage in patients with brain metastases. Enrollment challenges with this trial highlight important considerations for future studies of ALK inhibitor combinations.

Abstract
Transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) can effectively reduce the portal venous pressure and relieve the clinical complications related to portal hypertension. However, hepatic encephalopathy (HE) is still the main complication post TIPS. Studies have shown that patients over 65 years old with liver function reserve in Child-Pugh grade C are the high-HE-risk group post TIPS, and early TIPS treatment can benefit the survival of these high-risk patients. In this study, TIPS was used to treat 60 cases aged > 65 years old and liver function reserve in Child-Pugh grade C (decompensated liver cirrhosis) with esophagogastric variceal bleeding. The clinical results of 1-year was observed and the porto systemic gradient (PSG) was evaluated. The relationship between the incidence of HE and the PSG of patients with and without HE were compared to evaluate the effect of PSG on the incidence of HE.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the thermal injury effects on human HaCaT cells under simulated microgravity environment. Methods: The human HaCaT cells were collected and divided into simulated microgravity thermal injury (SMGTI) group, normal gravity thermal injury (NGTI) group, and normal gravity false injury (NGFI) group according to the random number table. Cells in NGTI and NGFI groups were cultured routinely in culture bottle, and cells in SMGTI group were cultured in the rotary cell culture system to simulate microgravity environment. Cells in SMGTI and NGTI groups were bathed in hot water of 45 ℃ for 10 minutes to make thermal injury model, and cells in NGFI group were bathed in warm water of 37 ℃ for 10 minutes to simulate thermal injury. At post injury hour (PIH) 12, cell morphology of 3 groups was observed under inverted phase contrast electron microscope. At PIH 2, 6, and 12, single cell suspension in the 3 groups was collected to detect the cell cycle by flow cytometer and the mRNA expressions of heat shock protein 70 (HSP70), matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9), and cysteine-aspartic protease 3 (caspase-3) by real time fluorescence quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction, and the experiments were repeated for 3 times. At PIH 2, 6, and 12, cell culture supernatant in the 3 groups was collected to detect the concentration of heparin-binding epidermal growth factor (HB-EGF) by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay method, the experiment was repeated for 3 times. The sample in each group and each time point was 3. Data were statistically analyzed with analysis of variance for factorial design, one-way analysis of variance, least significant difference test, Kruskal-Wallis H test, and Mann-Whitney U test. Results: (1) At PIH 12, cells in NGFI group showed regular shape and regular arrangement, with no cell debris. The cell shape in NGTI group was generally regular, with fewer cell debris and closer arrangement than that in NGFI group. The cells in SMGTI group showed more irregular shapes, different sizes, and dead cell debris. (2) The percentage of G1 phase cells in NGTI group was significantly higher than that in NGFI group and SMGTI group at PIH 2, respectively (P<0.05), and the percentage of G1 phase cells in NGTI group was significantly lower than that in NGFI group and SMGTI group at PIH 6 and 12, respectively (P<0.05). The percentage of G2/M phase cells in NGTI group was significantly lower than that in SMGTI group at PIH 2 (P<0.05), and the percentage of G2/M phase cells in NGTI group was significantly higher than that in NGFI group and SMGTI group at PIH 6 and 12, respectively (P<0.05). The percentage of S phase cells in NGTI group at PIH 2, 6, and 12 was significantly higher than that in SMGTI group (P<0.05), and the percentage of S phase cells in NGTI group at PIH 2 and 6 was significantly lower than that in NGFI group (P<0.05). (3) The HSP70 mRNA expressions of cells in NGTI group were 2.50±0.30 and 3.99±0.35 at PIH 2 and 6, which were significantly higher than 1.14±0.15 and 0.82±0.27 in NGFI group (P<0.05), and 1.17±0.53 and 1.65±0.59 in SMGTI group (P<0.05). The MMP-9 mRNA expression of cells in SMGTI group was significantly higher than that in NGTI group at PIH 2, 6, and 12, respectively (Z=-2.319, -2.882, -2.908, P<0.05). At each time point after injury, the mRNA expression of caspase-3 of cells in NGTI group was similar to that in NGFI group and SMGTI group, respectively (P>0.05). (4) The concentration of HB-EGF in cell culture supernatant of NGTI group was significantly lower than that in NGFI group at PIH 2, 6 and 12 (P<0.05), and the concentration of HB-EGF in cell culture supernatant of SMGTI group was significantly higher than that in NGTI group at PIH 2 and 6 (P<0.05). Conclusions: The proliferation and secretion functions and expression of wound repair related protein of human HaCaT cells inflicted with thermal injury in simulated microgravity environment showed complex and diversified changes, which provide theoretical basis for further research on damage repair under weightlessness.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to explore the mitigating effect of morphine on the myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury (MIRI) in rats through the cyclic adenosine monophosphate/protein kinase A (cAMP/PKA) pathway. A total of 30 male Wistar rats were assigned into sham group, MIRI group and morphine group using a random number table. The model of MIRI was routinely established. Then, the pathological changes in the morphology of myocardial tissues were observed via hematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining. The levels of the oxidative stress indicators superoxide dismutase (SOD) and malondialdehyde (MDA), the content of the inflammatory cytokine tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) and IL-6 and the quantity of glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), creatine kinase (CK), CK-MB and cardiac troponin I (cTnI) in the myocardial enzyme spectrum were determined and analyzed through enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Moreover, the messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) and protein expressions of cAMP, PKA, cAMP-response element binding protein (CREB) and phosphorylated CREB (p-CREB) in the cAMP/PKA signaling pathway in the myocardial tissues were measured using real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and Western blotting, respectively. The results manifested that compared with those in MIRI group, the levels of myocardial infarct size, LDH, CK, CK-MB, cTnI, MDA, TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6 and p-CREB were decreased, while the levels of GSH-Px, SOD, PKA and CREB were increased in the morphine group. In conclusion, morphine may mitigate MIRI in rats through the cAMP/PKA signaling pathway.

Abstract
PURPOSE To examine the impact of diverse syndromes of focal and generalized epilepsy on language function in children with new and recent onset epilepsy. Of special interest was the degree of shared language abnormality across epilepsy syndromes and the unique effects associated with specific epilepsy syndromes. METHODS Participants were 136 youth with new or recent-onset (diagnosis within past 12 months) epilepsy and 107 healthy first-degree cousin controls. The participants with epilepsy included 20 with Temporal Lobe Epilepsy (TLE; M age = 12.99 years, SD = 3.11), 41 with Benign Epilepsy with Centrotemporal Spikes (BECTS; M age = 10.32, SD = 1.67), 42 with Juvenile Myoclonic Epilepsy (JME; M age = 14.85, SD = 2.75) and 33 with absence epilepsy (M age = 10.55, SD = 2.76). All children were administered a comprehensive test battery which included multiple measures of language and language-dependent abilities (i.e., verbal intelligence, vocabulary, verbal reasoning, object naming, reception word recognition, word reading, spelling, lexical and semantic fluency, verbal list learning and delayed verbal memory). Test scores were adjusted for age and gender and analyzed via MANCOVA. RESULTS Language abnormalities were found in all epilepsy patient groups. The most broadly affected children were those with TLE and absence epilepsy, whose performance differed significantly from controls on 8 of 11 and 9 of 11 tests respectively. Although children with JME and BECTS were less affected, significant differences from controls were found on 4 of 11 tests each. While each group had a unique profile of language deficits, commonalities were apparent across both idiopathic generalized and localization-related diagnostic categories. DISCUSSION The localization related and generalized idiopathic childhood epilepsies examined here were associated with impact on diverse language abilities early in the course of the disorder.

Abstract
Objective: To explore correlation between chest CT score and oxygenation index in patients with acute hydrogen sulphide poisoning, whether CT score can be applied to assess acute lung injury after acute hydrogen sulfide poisoning and provide basis and reference. Methods: The clinic and a series of CT datas of 32 acute hydrogen sulphide poisoning cases were retrospectively analysed and compared, According to GBZ31-2002 (the diagnostic standard of occupational H(2)S acute poisoning) , these patients were divided into 2 grouds including moderate groud and severe groud; The CT score were improved, referenceing the scoring criteria of the chest X-ray; The difference of the CT score and the oxygenation index were analyzed between moderate and severe group in the acute phase and the disperse phase; The correlation between CT score and oxygenation index were analyzed. Results: The CT score in moderate poisoning group were lower than severe group (2.26±1.37 vs 10.44±2.55, 1.34±0.65 vs 4.55±2.45, all P<0.05) in the acute phase and the dissipation phase.The oxygen index of the 19 cases in the acute phase were 307.55±28.29, and the oxygen index of the 8 cases in the dissipation phase was 435.75±37.00; The oxygen index of the 9 cases in the acute phase and the dissipation phase were respectively 193.17±36.41, 347.67±44.49. The oxygen partial pressure and oxygenation index in severe group were significantly lower than those in moderate group (all P<0.01) in the acute phase and the dissipation phase. Pearman correlation analysis showed that the CT score were negatively correlated to the oxygen index in the acute phase and the dissipation phase, respectively (r=-0.97、-0.75, all P<0.01) . Conclusions: The CT score of lung injury and oxygenation index is negatively correlated. The CT score can be used to evaluate the degree of lung injury, and can be used in the evaluation of acute lung injury after acute hydrogen sulfide poisoning.

Abstract
Electrophysiology and neuroimaging provide conflicting evidence for the neural contributions to target detection. Scalp electroencephalography (EEG) studies localize the P3b event-related potential component mainly to parietal cortex, whereas neuroimaging studies report activations in both frontal and parietal cortices. We addressed this discrepancy by examining the sources that generate the target-detection process using electrocorticography (ECoG). We recorded ECoG activity from cortex in 14 patients undergoing epilepsy monitoring, as they performed an auditory or visual target-detection task. We examined target-related responses in 2 domains: high frequency band (HFB) activity and the P3b. Across tasks, we observed a greater proportion of electrodes that showed target-specific HFB power relative to P3b over frontal cortex, but their proportions over parietal cortex were comparable. Notably, there was minimal overlap in the electrodes that showed target-specific HFB and P3b activity. These results revealed that the target-detection process is characterized by at least 2 different neural markers with distinct cortical distributions. Our findings suggest that separate neural mechanisms are driving the differential patterns of activity observed in scalp EEG and neuroimaging studies, with the P3b reflecting EEG findings and HFB activity reflecting neuroimaging findings, highlighting the notion that target detection is not a unitary phenomenon.

Abstract
A single dose of caudal lidocaine does not provide a sufficiently long anaesthetic duration and is not generally used for complicated anorectal surgery. This study evaluated the safety and efficacy of a ropivacaine–lidocaine combination for caudal anaesthesia in patients undergoing haemorrhoidectomy. A total of 287 haemorrhoid patients with successful initial caudal anaesthesia were randomized to receive either a mixture of 0.375% ropivacaine and 1.0% lidocaine (ropi–lido group; n = 146) or 1.0% lidocaine alone (placebo-lido group; n = 141). Significantly fewer patients in the ropi–lido group required intra-operative supplemental anaesthesia than in the placebo-lido group. Patients treated with the ropivacaine–lidocaine combination had significantly lower scores for pain at each post-operative time point, and a longer mean time to the first requirement for post-operative analgesic than patients in the placebo-lido group. These results suggest that caudal anaesthesia with a combination of ropivacaine and lidocaine is a safe and effective method of inducing anaesthesia during haemorrhoidectomy.

Abstract
Natural emissions of ozone-and-aerosol-precursor gases such as isoprene and monoterpenes are high in the southeast of the US. In addition, anthropogenic emissions are significant in the Southeast US and summertime photochemistry is rapid. The NOAA-led SENEX (Southeast Nexus) aircraft campaign was one of the major components of the Southeast Atmosphere Study (SAS) and was focused on studying the interactions between biogenic and anthropogenic emissions to form secondary pollutants. During SENEX, the NOAA WP-3D aircraft conducted 20 research flights between 27 May and 10 July 2013 based out of Smyrna, TN. Here we describe the experimental approach, the science goals and early results of the NOAA SENEX campaign. The aircraft, its capabilities and standard measurements are described. The instrument payload is summarized including detection limits, accuracy, precision and time resolutions for all gas-and-aerosol phase instruments. The inter-comparisons of compounds measured with multiple instruments on the NOAA WP-3D are presented and were all within the stated uncertainties, except two of the three NO2 measurements. The SENEX flights included day- and nighttime flights in the Southeast as well as flights over areas with intense shale gas extraction (Marcellus, Fayetteville and Haynesville shale). We present one example flight on 16 June 2013, which was a daytime flight over the Atlanta region, where several crosswind transects of plumes from the city and nearby point sources, such as power plants, paper mills and landfills, were flown. The area around Atlanta has large biogenic isoprene emissions, which provided an excellent case for studying the interactions between biogenic and anthropogenic emissions. In this example flight, chemistry in and outside the Atlanta plumes was observed for several hours after emission. The analysis of this flight showcases the strategies implemented to answer some of the main SENEX science questions.

Abstract
These experiments investigate the decomposition mechanisms of geminal dinitro energetic materials by photolytically generating two key intermediates: 2-nitropropene and 2-nitro-2-propyl radicals. To characterize the unimolecular dissociation of each intermediate, we form them under collision-free conditions using the photodissociation of 2-bromo-2-nitropropane; the intermediates are formed at high internal energies and undergo a multitude of subsequent unimolecular dissociation events investigated herein. Complementing our prior work on this system, the new data obtained with a crossed-laser molecular beam scattering apparatus with VUV photoionization detection at Taiwan's National Synchrotron Radiation Research Center (NSRRC) and new velocity map imaging data better characterize two of the four primary 193 nm photodissociation channels. The C-Br photofission channel forming the 2-nitro-2-propyl radicals has a trimodal recoil kinetic energy distribution, P(ET), suggesting that the 2-nitro-2-propyl radicals are formed both in the ground electronic state and in two low-lying excited electronic states. The new data also revise the HBr photoelimination P(ET) forming the 2-nitropropene intermediate. We then resolved the multiple competing unimolecular dissociation channels of each photoproduct, confirming many of the channels detected in the prior study, but not all. The new data detected HONO product at m/e = 47 using 11.3 eV photoionization from both intermediates; analysis of the momentum-matched products allows us to establish that both 2-nitro-2-propyl → HONO + CH3CCH2 and 2-nitropropene → HONO + C3H4 occur. Photoionization at 9.5 eV allowed us to detect the mass 71 coproduct formed in OH loss from 2-nitro-2-propyl; a channel missed in our prior study. The dynamics of the highly exothermic 2-nitro-2-propyl → NO + acetone dissociation is also better characterized; it evidences a sideways scattered angular distribution. The detection of some stable 2-nitropropene photoproducts allows us to fit signal previously assigned to H loss from 2-nitro-2-propyl radicals. Overall, the data provide a comprehensive study of the unimolecular dissociation channels of these important nitro-containing intermediates.

Abstract
We investigate the photolytic production of two radical intermediates in the reaction of OH with propene, one from addition of the hydroxyl radical to the terminal carbon and the other from addition to the center carbon. In a collision-free environment, we photodissociate a mixture of 1-bromo-2-propanol and 2-bromo-1-propanol at 193 nm to produce these radical intermediates. The data show two primary photolytic processes occur: C-Br photofission and HBr photoelimination. Using a velocity map imaging apparatus, we measured the speed distribution of the recoiling bromine atoms, yielding the distribution of kinetic energies of the nascent C3H6OH radicals + Br. Resolving the velocity distributions of Br((2)P(1/2)) and Br((2)P(3/2)) separately with 2 + 1 REMPI allows us to determine the total (vibrational + rotational) internal energy distribution in the nascent radicals. Using an impulsive model to estimate the rotational energy imparted to the nascent C3H6OH radicals, we predict the percentage of radicals having vibrational energy above and below the lowest dissociation barrier, that to OH + propene; it accurately predicts the measured velocity distribution of the stable C3H6OH radicals. In addition, we use photofragment translational spectroscopy to detect several dissociation products of the unstable C3H6OH radicals: OH + propene, methyl + acetaldehyde, and ethyl + formaldehyde. We also use the angular momenta of the unstable radicals and the tensor of inertia of each to predict the recoil kinetic energy and angular distributions when they dissociate to OH + propene; the prediction gives an excellent fit to the data.

Abstract
In this study, the phenotypic identification and molecular mechanism of one case of an A2B subtype pedigree was investigated. ABO blood groupings were identified by serological methods and sequence amplification was performed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using TA cloning and DNA sequencing analysis to identify the pedigree and the ABO gene haploid of the proband. There were both A and B antigens on the proband's red blood cells, and anti-A1 antibodies were found in the serum. Direct sequencing of the 6th and 7th exons of the ABO gene showed the A208/B101 genotype, and haploid determination revealed the A208 and B101 alleles. Compared with the A102 allele sequence, the A208 allele was mutated at the 539 G>C site. Pedigree analysis showed that the ABO blood phenotypes of the proband's father, mother, husband, and daughter were A2, B, AB, and A2B, respectively, and their genotypes were A208/O02, B101/B101, A102/B101, and A208/B101, respectively. The father of the proband had anti-A1 antibodies and the A208 allele of the proband was inherited from her father, which can be passed on to her daughter. The α-1, 3-N-acetylgalactose aminotransferase gene 539G>C mutation resulted in A2B phenotype generation, and individual serum contained the anti-A1 antibody.

Abstract
This prospective, randomized study compared the outcomes of hand-assisted laparoscopic surgery (HALS) with open surgery for the resection of rectal cancer. The main outcome measures were procedure time, blood loss, post-operative pain, time to oral intake, return of bowel function, length of hospital stay, morbidity and functional recovery. Patients in each group were similar with regard to general status, procedure types and the histopathological features of tumours. Procedure times were significantly longer with HALS versus open surgery. Analgesic requirements, surgical blood loss, time to first passing flatus, time to first oral fluids and post-operative hospital stay length were all significantly shorter in the HALS group. At a median follow-up of 16.3 months, local recurrence of tumour was not observed in either group. In this study, the HALS approach for curative resection of rectal cancer was safe and effective and may offer several potential advantages to patients in their post-operative recovery.

Abstract
We investigated the electron transport property of the InGaAs/GaAs double quantum dots, the electron g factors of which are different from each other. We found that in a magnetic field, the resonant tunneling is suppressed even if one of the Zeeman sublevels is aligned. This is because the other misaligned Zeeman sublevels limit the total current. A finite broadening of the misaligned sublevel partially relieves this bottleneck effect, and the maximum current is reached when interdot detuning is half the Zeeman energy difference.

Abstract
AIM Peroxisome proliferator activated receptors (PPARs) are nuclear receptors involved in glucose and lipid metabolism. Three isoforms of PPARs have been identified with different tissue distribution and biological functions. Although the pharmacology of each receptor is well studied, the physiological effect of simultaneous activation of PPARalpha, gamma and delta is only starting to emerge. We sought to determine the biological effects of a novel PPAR pan activator and elucidate the physiological mechanisms involved. METHODS Ob/ob, diet-induced obese (DIO) or PPARalpha knockout mice were administered a novel agonist that activates all PPARs to various degrees to determine the effect on body weight, body composition, food intake and energy expenditure. In addition, serum parameters including glucose, insulin, triglycerides and ketone bodies as well as tissue acylcarnitine were evaluated. The effect of the novel agonist on liver and skeletal muscle histopathology was also studied. RESULTS We report that simultaneous activation of all PPARs resulted in substantial weight loss in ob/ob and DIO mice. Consistent with known PPAR pharmacology, we observed that agonist treatment increased lipid oxidation, although appetite suppression was mainly responsible for the weight loss. Agonist-induced weight loss was completely absent in PPARalpha knockout mice suggesting that PPARalpha pharmacology was the major contributor to weight regulation in mice. CONCLUSIONS Our work provides evidence that simultaneous activation of PPARalpha, gamma and delta decreases body weight by regulating appetite. These effects of the pan agonist were completely absent in PPARalpha knockout mice, suggesting that PPARalpha pharmacology was the major contributor to weight loss.

Abstract
This study was purposed to evaluate a method to discriminate the action loci of anticancer agents in G(2) and M phases of cell cycle. The meta-amsacrine (m-AMSA) and vinblastine (VBL), already known as G(2) and M phase arrest agent respectively, were used to induce the arrest of MOLT-4 cells at G(2) and M phases, the change of DNA content was detected by flow cytometry, the morphology of arrested cells was observed by confocal microscopy so as to find the arrest efficacy difference of 2 anticancer agents. As a result, the flow cytometric detection showed that the arrested MOLT-4 cells displayed the raise of peaks in G(2) and M phases, but flow cytometric detection alone can not discriminate the difference between them. The observation with confocal microscopy showed that the MOLT-4 cells arrested by m-AMSA displayed the morphologic features in G(2) phase, while the MOLT-4 cells arrested by VBL displayed the morphologic features in M phase. This observation with confocal microscopy is helpful to discriminate the difference between them. In conclusion, the combination of flow cytometry with confocal microscopy is one of the effective methods to discriminate the kind of G(2) or M phase arresting agent of anticancer drugs.

Abstract
Cell and protoplast-derived callus and suspension cultures from healthy and citrus exocortis viroid (CEV)-infected tomato tissue have been established. The growth rates of CEV-containing cells is not affected by the presence of the viroid. In addition, the viroid-containing cells demonstrate a higher temperature tolerance for growth. The cell wall structure of infected tissue apparently differs from healthy cells as suggested by the differential release of protoplasts and the increased yields of protoplasts from infected cells in the presence of beta-1,3-glucanase. This biochemical distinction also persists in cell suspension cultures. The relationship between the cell wall anomaly and the increased frequency of plasmalemmasomes in CEV-containing callus cells is discussed.

Abstract
We have studied the electrical transport properties of individual single-crystalline IrO(2) nanorods prepared by the metal-organic chemical vapour deposition method. With the help of the standard electron-beam lithographic technique, individual nanorods are contacted by Cr/Au submicron electrodes from above. Utilizing two-probe, three-probe and four-probe measurement configurations, not only the intrinsic electrical transport properties of the individual nanorods but also the electronic contact resistances, R(c)(T), have been determined from 300 K down to liquid-helium temperatures. Our measured resistivity behaviour of the nanorods is in close agreement with the current theoretical understanding of this rutile material. On the other hand, we found that the temperature behaviour of the electronic contact resistance obeys the law [Formula: see text] over an extremely wide temperature range, from approximately 100 K down to liquid-helium temperatures. This latter conduction process is ascribed to the hopping of electrons through nanoscale Cr granules and/or an amorphous coating incidentally formed at the interface between the submicron Cr/Au electrode and the nanorod.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To reduce the incidence of early arteriovenous fistula failure (AVF) due to thrombosis in pediatric hemodialysis (HD) patients, a primary thromboprophylaxis (PTP) protocol was initiated at author's institution in June 2005. The goal of this study is to report author's experience with this protocol one year later. METHODS AND RESULTS 19 AVFs (14 patients, Historical group) and 8 AVFs (7 patients, PTP group) were created prior to and after initiation of PTP respectively. PTP consisted of unfractionated heparin (5-10 units/kg/hr) infusion postoperatively, followed by subcutaneous low molecular weigh heparin (LMWH) until AVF was matured. LMWH dosing was 'Prophylactic' (0.5 mg/kg/d, anti-factor Xa levels: peak 0.25-0.5 and trough < 0.3 units/mL) and 'Therapeutic' (1 mg/kg/d, anti-factor Xa level: peak 0.5-1 and trough < 0.5 units/mL) based on thrombosis predisposition. In Historical group, 12 AVFs did not receive thromboprophylaxis (No-treatment group), 5 received 81 mg aspirin/day (Aspirin group), and 2 received LMWH. In No-treatment group 10/12 AVFs failed: 9 thromboses and 1 stenosis. In Aspirin group 1/5 AVFs failed due to thrombosis. In PTP group 1/8 AVFs failed due to stenosis; the first 2 AVFs developed hematoma prompting a reduction in LMWH dose and monitoring trough anti-factor Xa levels, one AVF required thrombectomy after LMWH was transiently held. The incidence of thrombosis was less in PTP group (12.5%) when comparing to No-treatment group (83%) (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION PTP is a feasible option to prevent early thrombosis at AVF. Close clinical and laboratory monitoring including trough anti-factor Xa levels is required to adjust optimum anticoagulation. Larger studies are needed to clarify safety and efficacy of our PTP protocol.

Abstract
Previous studies have shown that dendritic cells (DCs) and apoptosis-related proteins play a critical role in the pathogenesis of autoimmune thyroid diseases (ATD). This study was designed to investigate the expression and distribution of S-100 protein, CD83 and apoptosis-related proteins (Fas, FasL and Bcl-2) in the thyroid tissues of ATD and their role in ATD pathogenesis as determined by immunochemical staing techniques and other methods. Pathological tissues of 30 patients with Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT), 30 patients with Graves' disease (GD) and 30 cases of thyroid follicular adenoma (TFA, as control) were used for this study. A higher expression of S-100 in HT (4.2+/-3.1%) and GD (3.9+/-2.8%) vs TFA (0.95+/-0.64%) (p<0.001). was observed as well as a higher expression of CD83 in HT (22.58+/-13.96% and GD (29.92+/-14.43%) vs TFA (5.19+/-8.08%) (p<0.001). HT thyrocytes adjacent to thyroid infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) showed greater increases in the levels of Fas and FasL than did the GD thyrocytes while HT TILs exhibited lower expression of Fas and FasL than did the GD TILs. GD thyrocytes expressed increased levels of the antiapoptotic protein Bcl-2 as compared to the low levels detected in HT thyrocytes. An opposite pattern was observed in the TILs in GD (low expression of Bcl-2) and HT (high expression of Bcl-2). The findings suggest that the high expression of DC markers is related to the pathogenesis of HT and GD. Up-regulation of both the number and matured functions of DCs may lead to the presentation of more antigens to lymphocytes which are related to the development of autoimmune thyroid diseases. The regulation of Fas/FasL/Bcl-2 in GD favors apoptosis of infiltrating lymphocytes and thyrocyte survival. The regulation of Fas/FasL/Bcl-2 in HT may promote thyrocyte apoptosis leading to hypothyroidism.

Abstract
Using a crossed laser-molecular beam scattering apparatus, these experiments photodissociate ethyl chloride at 193 nm and detect the Cl and ethyl products, resolved by their center-of-mass recoil velocities, with vacuum ultraviolet photoionization. The data determine the relative partial cross-sections for the photoionization of ethyl radicals to form C2H5+, C2H4+, and C2H3+ at 12.1 and 13.8 eV. The data also determine the internal energy distribution of the ethyl radical prior to photoionization, so we can assess the internal energy dependence of the photoionization cross-sections. The results show that the C2H4++H and C2H3++H2 dissociative photoionization cross-sections strongly depend on the photoionization energy. Calibrating the ethyl radical partial photoionization cross-sections relative to the bandwidth-averaged photoionization cross-section of Cl atoms near 13.8 eV allows us to use these data in conjunction with literature estimates of the Cl atom photoionization cross-sections to put the present bandwidth-averaged cross-sections on an absolute scale. The resulting bandwidth-averaged cross-section for the photoionization of ethyl radicals to C2H5+ near 13.8 eV is 8+/-2 Mb. Comparison of our 12.1 eV data with high-resolution ethyl radical photoionization spectra allows us to roughly put the high-resolution spectrum on the same absolute scale. Thus, one obtains the photoionization cross-section of ethyl radicals to C2H5+ from threshold to 12.1 eV. The data show that the onset of the C2H4++H dissociative photoionization channel is above 12.1 eV; this result offers a simple way to determine whether the signal observed in photoionization experiments on complex mixtures is due to ethyl radicals. We discuss an application of the results for resolving the product branching in the O+allyl bimolecular reaction.

Abstract
We report the observation of strong electron dephasing in a series of disordered Cu93Ge4Au3 thin films. A very short electron dephasing time possessing very weak temperature dependence around 6 K, followed by an upturn with further decrease in temperature below 4 K, is found. The upturn is progressively more pronounced in more disordered samples. Moreover, a lnT-dependent, but high-magnetic-field-insensitive, resistance rise persisting from above 10 K down to 30 mK is observed in the films. These results suggest a nonmagnetic dephasing process which is stronger than any known mechanism and may originate from the coupling of conduction electrons to dynamic defects.

Abstract
Coccidiosis is the major parasitic disease of poultry. In this study, the role of the commercial probiotic MitoMax which contains Pediococcus acidilactici and Saccharomyces boulardii was evaluated by measuring body weight gain, fecal oocyst shedding, and serum antibody responses as an alternative control method of prophylactic drug against coccidiosis. Day-old broiler chicks were fed regular or probiotic diets supplemented with MitoMax at 0.01%, 0.1%, or 1.0% of diet, and challenged 2 weeks later with 5000 oocysts of either Eimeria acervulina (EA) or Eimeria tenella (ET). Birds fed 1.0% or 0.1% MitoMax-supplemented diets in EA- or ET-infected groups shed less (P<0.05) oocysts than control-infected chickens. Also, chickens fed 0.1% MitoMax-supplemented diet and infected with EA exhibited higher (P<0.001) serum Eimeria-specific antibodies than other groups. These results demonstrate that MitoMax may enhance the resistance of birds against coccidiosis by enhancing humoral immunity when included at > or = 0.1% of the broiler diet.

Abstract
Coccidiosis is the major parasitic disease of poultry and is caused by the apicomplexan parasites Eimeria. Drugs and live vaccines are the 2 main control measures of the disease; however, due to increasing concerns with prophylactic drug use and the high cost of vaccines, alternative control methods are needed. Recent evidence that various dietary and live microbial supplements can influence host immunity against enteric diseases prompted us to investigate the role of a Pediococcus-based probiotic on coccidiosis in broiler chickens. In the present study, we examined BW gains, oocyst shedding, and antibody responses of broilers fed the commercial probiotic MitoGrow. Day-old chicks were fed either a regular broiler diet or 1 of 2 probiotic diets supplemented with 0.1% (MG 0.1) or 0.2% MitoGrow. Chicks were orally challenged with 5,000 or 10,000 sporulated oocysts of Eimeria acervulina or with 5,000 Eimeria tenella oocysts on d 10 or 12 of age, respectively. In E. acervulina-infected birds, the MG 0.1 group improved (P < 0.05) weight gain as compared with the other 2 groups and reduced (P < 0.05) oocyst shedding in birds infected with 5,000 E. acervulina oocysts. In E. tenella-infected birds, Eimeria-specific antibody levels were higher (P < 0.05) in the Mito-Grow-fed groups, especially in the MG 0.1 birds, compared with the regular diet group, although their oocyst shedding and weight gains were not clearly improved. These results demonstrate that this Pediococcus acidilactici-based probiotic effectively enhances the resistance of birds and partially protects against the negative growth effects associated with coccidiosis, particularly when supplemented at 0.1% MitoGrow of the diet.

Abstract
The authors used surface-based anatomic mapping to detect features of hippocampal anatomy that correlated with surgical outcomes in patients undergoing surgery for mesial temporal lobe epilepsy with hippocampal sclerosis. Compared with a seizure-free group, hippocampal profiles for the non-seizure-free group had greater diffuse ipsilateral atrophy and more region-specific contralateral atrophy in the anterior, lateral hippocampus. These atrophic regions may indicate areas of increased epileptogenicity, contributing to poorer surgical outcomes.

Abstract
Recent studies suggest that inflammation may play an important role in the pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease (PD). Because the C(-260) --> T polymorphism in the promoter of the CD14 monocyte receptor gene (pCD14) could affect the predisposition to the inflammatory response, we conducted a case-control study to investigate a possible genetic susceptibility of the pCD14 polymorphism in patients with PD. This study included 200 sporadic PD patients and 200 controls, matched by sex and case-control pairs for age at onset in the case. All observed genotype frequencies were in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. Results revealed that the CD14-T allele of the pCD14 polymorphism in the female PD patients existed statistically significant difference from that of the female controls (OR = 1.262, P = 0.038), but not for male. Female individuals with homozygote CD14-TT genotype were significantly increased risk of PD by 1.28 time (P = 0.027). Furthermore, a logistic regression analysis confirmed that the homozygote CD14-TT genotype was an independent risk factor for PD (OR = 1.576, P = 0.030). In conclusion, results of this study indicate the pCD14 polymorphism to be a genetic risk factor for PD in females.

Abstract
There has been increasing evidence suggesting that inflammatory response maybe involved in the pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease (PD). Alpha1-antichymotrypsin gene (ACT) has been regarded as a susceptibility factor for PD in the past, but the evidence remains controversial. This case-control study was designed to investigate the association of alpha1-antichymotrypsin gene (ACT) polymorphism between 210 Taiwanese patients with clinical definite sporadic PD and 260 controls, matched by age and sex. There were no differences of allelic frequency (A and T) and genotype polymorphism (AA, AT and TT) of the ACT in PD patients from the controls. However, there were significantly fewer early-onset PD (onset age younger than 60 years) or PD women carrying the homozygote AA genotype (ACT-AA) than in controls (p=0.046 and 0.044, respectively). Further analysis revealed that the reduced risk of ACT-AA was particularly significant among PD women with the onset age younger than 60 years (OR=0.796, 95% CI=0.749-0.847, p<0.0001). This study shows that ACT-AA may confer a modest protection against developing early-onset PD in women.

Abstract
A 600 bp DNA fragment was amplified by PCR from an adult Schistosoma japonicum cDNA library. Sequence analysis confirmed that this fragment contained an S. japonicum Chinese mainland strain fatty acid binding protein (Sj14FABP) gene. This gene was subsequently expressed in Escherichia coli (E. coli) and in Baculovirus/silkworm systems. The recombinant protein from E. coli was a 41 kDa GST fusion protein (rSj14/GST), which could be purified by glutathione agarose affinity chromatography, with a yield of 25 mg/L E. coli culture. The recombinant protein from the Baculovirus/silkworm system was an 18 kDa fusion protein (rSj14/His), which could be purified by Ni-NTA resin chromatography column with a yield of 3.5 mg per silkworm larva. Both rSj14/GST and rSj14/His could be recognized by S. japonicum-infected mouse sera and anti-rSj14/GST mouse sera in Western blotting. The purified recombinant protein was immunogenic in mice, rats and sheep, and 34.3%, 31.9% and 59.2% worm reductions, respectively, were obtained in vaccinated Kunming mice, Wistar rats and sheep vaccinated with Sj14/GST, compared to non-vaccinated control groups. Worm reductions of 48.8% and 49.0% were recorded in Balb/c mice immunized with Sj14/His, compared to non-vaccinated and BCG-vaccinated groups, respectively. These results indicate that rSj14FABP is a promising candidate vaccine for schistosomiasis japonica, particularly as in the rat and sheep vaccination experiments, no adjuvant was used.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the sex difference in proteins between male and female adult worm of Schistosoma japonicum. METHODS Two-electrophoresis was used to analyse the difference of protein between the male and female adult worm of S. japonicum (Chinese strain). RESULTS Two-dimensional electrophoresis analysis revealed that at the site of 43 kDa and an isoelectric point (pI) of 5.60-5.90 the male worm exhibited a band carrying a number of spots and dots, being longer and wider than that exhibited by the female worm. The female worm exhibited 7 specific dots. CONCLUSION The sex differences in proteins between male and female adult worms of S. japonicum are significant.

Abstract
Fetal ventral mesencephalon (VM) transplantation has been reported to improve parkinsonian symptoms. Animal studies show that cografting of striatal tissue increases the survival of dopamine neurons. Whether or not VM and striatum cografting could ameliorate motor dysfunction in a Parkinson's disease (PD) patient was explored in this study. The patient was a 53-year-old male who had presented with symptoms of tremor, rigidity and bradykinesia for 11 years. He had been treated with L-dopa and had progressive deterioration of symptoms even with the daily dosage of L-dopa increased to 900 mg per day. Before transplantation, his PD symptoms were scored with Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) and video recordings. The influx constant (ki) of the [18F] 6-fluoro-L-dopa uptake in the striatum was measured by positron emission tomography (PET) imaging. The fetal VM and the lateral part of the lateral ganglionic eminence (LGE) were cografted into the right putamen and, one week later, fetal VM alone was transplanted into the left putamen. After the transplantation, the patient's UPDRS score improved from 128 to 62 at 6 months and to 24 at 22 months during the "off" phase. The score of daily living disability improved from 35 to 18 at 6 months and to 10 at 22 months post transplantation. Twenty-two months after grafting, "off" phases were almost absent, and the freezing had totally disappeared. The [18F] 6-fluoro-L-dopa PET studies were performed 1 month before and 21 months after transplantation. The ki for [18F] 6-fluoro-L-dopa was decreased by 15% in the right caudate and 5% in the left caudate, both of which did not have any ventral mesencephalic grafts. However, the ki was increased by 35%, in the left non-cografted putamen, and by 58% in the right cografted putamen. In conclusion, cografting the fetal VM and the LGE in the putamen may improve the motor function of PD patients.

Abstract
A 1949 bp cDNA fragment was amplified by RT-PCR from adult Schistosoma japonicum (Chinese strain) mRNA with 3 pair of primers that were designed according to published SmGCP gene encoding gynecophoral canal protein of Schistosoma mansoni and SjGCP1 gene encoding the conservative region of gynecophoral canal protein of Schistosoma japonicum. Sequence analysis indicated that this fragment, named SjGCP, with 85% identity to SmGCP, contained a complete open reading frame (ORF) of gynecophoral canal protein gene of Schistosoma japonicum (Chinese strain). The amino acid sequence shared 83.7% identity with gynecophoral canal protein of Schistosoma mansoni. This fragment was cloned into the expression vector pET28c(+) and subsequently expressed in Escherichia coli. SDS-PAGE revealed that the molecular weight of this expressed product was 80 kD. Western blotting showed that the recombinant protein reacted well with the rabbit serum immunized with Sj worm antigen, indicating that this expressed product had good antigenicity.

Abstract
KChIP2, a gene encoding three auxiliary subunits of Kv4.2 and Kv4.3, is preferentially expressed in the adult heart, and its expression is downregulated in cardiac hypertrophy. Mice deficient for KChIP2 exhibit normal cardiac structure and function but display a prolonged elevation in the ST segment on the electrocardiogram. The KChIP2(-/-) mice are highly susceptible to the induction of cardiac arrhythmias. Single-cell analysis revealed a substrate for arrhythmogenesis, including a complete absence of transient outward potassium current, I(to), and a marked increase in action potential duration. These studies demonstrate that a defect in KChIP2 is sufficient to confer a marked genetic susceptibility to arrhythmias, establishing a novel genetic pathway for ventricular tachycardia via a loss of the transmural gradient of I(to).
