Abstract
This qualitative study explored the perceptions of seven individuals who defined themselves as culturally Deaf about the nature of their participation in both Deaf and hearing communities. This study was conducted in partnership with a community group that advises a municipal administration about disability rights issues. Semi-structured interviews using a phenomenological approach were completed with the aid of American Sign Language interpreters. Data were analyzed using constant comparisons to determine whether emergent themes fit the Person-Environment-Occupation Model. Feedback about the analysis was sought through a member-checking group of participants and themes were adjusted as needed. Participants reported that the main barrier to participation within both the hearing and the Deaf communities was difficulty with communication. This “great divide” resulted in disadvantages in education, limited access to competitive employment, diminished social opportunities, and fewer financial and service resources. The Person-Environment-Occupation Model proved a useful framework for conceptualizing findings.

Abstract
DF2 (DRNFLRFamide), a FMRFamide-like peptide, has been shown to increase the amount of transmitter released at crayfish neuromuscular junctions. Here, we examined a possible role for the cyclic nucleotide monophosphates, cAMP and cGMP, in DF2's effects on synaptic transmission. The effects of DF2 on synaptic transmission were monitored by recording excitatory postsynaptic potentials (EPSPs) in the deep abdominal extensor muscles of the crayfish, Procambarus clarkii. A number of activators and inhibitors were used to determine whether or not cAMP, cGMP, protein kinase A (PKA) and protein kinase G (PKG) mediate the effect of this neuropeptide. Phosphodiesterase inhibitors, known to inhibit the breakdown of cAMP (IBMX) and/or cGMP (mdBAMQ), potentiate the effect of DF2 on synaptic transmission. Activators of PKA (Sp-cAMPS) and PKG (8-pCPT-cGMP) increase EPSP amplitude, mimicking the effects of DF2. Inhibitors of PKA (Rp-cAMPS) and PKG (Rp-8-pCPT-cGMPS) each block a portion of the response to the peptide, and when applied together these two inhibitors completely block the response. Taken together, these results indicate that cyclic nucleotides and cyclic nucleotide-dependent protein kinases are necessary components of the pathway underlying modulation by this neuropeptide.

Abstract
The large-area coverage at a resolution of 10-20 metres per pixel in colour and three dimensions with the High Resolution Stereo Camera Experiment on the European Space Agency Mars Express Mission has made it possible to study the time-stratigraphic relationships of volcanic and glacial structures in unprecedented detail and give insight into the geological evolution of Mars. Here we show that calderas on five major volcanoes on Mars have undergone repeated activation and resurfacing during the last 20 per cent of martian history, with phases of activity as young as two million years, suggesting that the volcanoes are potentially still active today. Glacial deposits at the base of the Olympus Mons escarpment show evidence for repeated phases of activity as recently as about four million years ago. Morphological evidence is found that snow and ice deposition on the Olympus construct at elevations of more than 7,000 metres led to episodes of glacial activity at this height. Even now, water ice protected by an insulating layer of dust may be present at high altitudes on Olympus Mons.

Abstract
Ecstasy, a dangerous psychoactive drug, has become a popular recreational drug on college campuses and dance halls in the United States, United Kingdom, and around the world. No reports on ecstasy have shown addictiveness, and some users of ecstasy claim they prefer infrequent use which is not the usual addictive pattern. Jaw clenching, bruxism, and some cardiac arrhythmias requiring medical attention have been associated with consumption of ecstasy and some fatalities. In large scale retrospective questionnaire studies of subjective experiences users claimed that they felt a gentle relaxation and openness to others and few adversive effects. In rats and monkeys ecstasy has caused depletion of the neurotransmitter serotonin in the brain but similar effects have not been identified for humans. Case reports have shown panic attacks, flashbacks, paranoia, and even fatalities. The Drug Enforcement Administration in 1985 placed ecstasy in Schedule I, the most restrictive drug category.

Abstract
The Bender-Gestalt test originated in 1936 with Lauretta Bender for evaluating perceptual and motor development of children 4 to 11 yr. old. Koppitz (1964) developed a scoring system for the test. Lacks (1984) contributed normative data for testing adults. Seven studies since Lacks' which have contributed to normative data of adults' responses to the Bender-Gestalt are reviewed here.

Abstract
Pedophiles and child molesters share some characteristics. Most are male, and they can be heterosexual, homosexual, or bisexual. Some prefer adult sex partners but choose children because they are available and vulnerable. The sexual abuse perpetrated may be a 1-time incident and may consist only of fondling. Penetration is unlikely with young children. Perpetrators' ages range from teens to midlife. Most victims are girls, and the perpetrator usually is a relative, friend, or neighbor. The home of the victim is often the setting for the incident. When boys are victims, sexual abuse may take place outside the home, and perpetrators may be strangers. Perpetrators of sexual abuse of children often claim that they themselves were victims of childhood sexual abuse. Psychological profiles are helpful but are compromised partly because many perpetrators are prisoners and control groups are lacking for this research.

Abstract
Tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs) and monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) have been associated with an increase in cardiovascular disorders, especially in depressed patients who have pre-existing cardiac disease. These disorders are less likely to occur when a therapeutic dosage is administered. Injuries because of falls are more likely in elderly depressed patients, and orthostatic hypotension occurs with the use of TCAs. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressants differ structurally and in side effects from TCAs and MAOIs. They appear to be effective for treatment of depression, and their side-effect profiles appear safer than those of earlier approved antidepressants used by depressed patients with cardiovascular disorders.

Abstract
We have constructed a model structure that we believe represents the strongest possible physically and chemically reasonable representation of a hypothesized catalytically active hammerhead ribozyme structure in which a single divalent metal ion bridges the A9 and scissile phosphate groups. It has been proposed that such a structure arises from a conformational change in which the so-called ground-state structure (as observed by X-ray crystallography) rearranges in such a way that the pro-R oxygen atoms of both the A9 and scissile phosphate groups are directly coordinated by a single divalent metal ion in the transition-state of the hammerhead ribozyme cleavage reaction. We show that even the small subset of possible model structures that are consistent with these requirements, and that are stereochemically and sterically reasonable, are contradicted by experimental evidence. We also demonstrate that even a minimal subset of assumptions, i.e. that stems I and II are helical and that the two phosphate groups are coordinated by a divalent metal ion in the standard octahedral geometry, are sufficient to lead to this contradiction. We therefore conclude that such a mechanism of hammerhead ribozyme catalysis is untenable, at least in its present formulation.

Abstract
We have determined the crystal structure of the enzyme-product complex of the hammerhead ribozyme by using a reinforced crystal lattice to trap the complex prior to dissociation and by employing X-ray holographic image reconstruction, a real-space electron density imaging and refinement procedure. Subsequent to catalysis, the cleavage site residue (C-17), together with its 2',3'-cyclic phosphate, adopts a conformation close to and approximately perpendicular to the Watson-Crick base-pairing faces of two highly conserved purines in the ribozyme's catalytic pocket (G-5 and A-6). We observe several interactions with functional groups on these residues that have been identified as critical for ribozyme activity by biochemical analyses but whose role has defied explanation in terms of previous structural analyses. These interactions may therefore be relevant to the hammerhead ribozyme reaction mechanism.

Abstract
The secondary structure of an RNA aptamer, which has a high affinity for the Escherichia coli MetJ repressor protein, has been mapped using ribonucleases and with diethyl pyrocarbonate. The RNA ligand is composed of a stem-loop with a highly structured internal loop. Interference modification showed that the bases within the internal loop, and those directly adjacent to it, are important in the binding of the RNA ligand to MetJ. Most of the terminal stem-loop could be removed with little effect on the binding. Ethylation interference suggests that none of the phosphate groups are absolutely essential for tight binding. The data suggest that the MetJ binding site on the aptamer is distinct from that of the natural DNA target, the 8-base pair Met box.

Abstract
The coat protein of bacteriophage MS2 is known to bind specifically to an RNA hairpin formed within the MS2 genome. Structurally this hairpin is built up by an RNA double helix interrupted by one unpaired nucleotide and closed by a four-nucleotide loop. We have performed crystallographic studies of complexes between MS2 coat protein capsids and four RNA hairpin variants in order to evaluate the minimal requirements for tight binding to the coat protein and to obtain more information about the three-dimensional structure of these hairpins. An RNA fragment including the four loop nucleotides and a two-base-pair stem but without the unpaired nucleotide is sufficient for binding to the coat protein shell under the conditions used in this study. In contrast, an RNA fragment containing a stem with the unpaired nucleotide but missing the loop nucleotides does not bind to the protein shell.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The catalytic activity of RNA enzymes is thought to require divalent metal ions, which are believed to facilitate RNA folding and to play a direct chemical role in the reaction. RESULTS We have found that the hammerhead, hairpin and VS ribozymes do not require divalent metal ions, their mimics such as [Co(NH3)6]3+, or even monovalent metal ions for efficient self-cleavage. The HDV ribozyme, however, does appear to require divalent metal ions for self-cleavage. For the hammerhead, hairpin and VS ribozymes, very high concentrations of monovalent cations support RNA-cleavage rates similar to or exceeding those observed in standard concentrations of Mg2+. Analysis of all reaction components by inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrophotometry (ICPOES) and the use of a variety of chelating agents effectively eliminate the possibility of contaminating divalent and trivalent metal ions in the reactions. For the hairpin ribozyme, fluorescence resonance energy transfer experiments demonstrate that high concentrations of monovalent cations support folding into the catalytically proficient tertiary structure. CONCLUSIONS These results directly demonstrate that metal ions are not obligatory chemical participants in the reactions catalysed by the hammerhead, hairpin, and VS ribozymes. They permit us to suggest that the folded structure of the RNA itself contributes more to the catalytic function than was previously recognised, and that the presence of a relatively dense positive charge, rather than divalent metal ions, is the general fundamental requirement. Whether this charge is required for catalysis per se or simply for RNA folding remains to be determined.

Abstract
Methadone maintenance programs have effectively reduced heroin dependency and are available in most countries affected by heroin addiction. Methadone, developed in Germany during World War II as a pain killer, does not have the euphoric effects of heroin and the goal of treatment is to substitute methadone for heroin use. Recidivism is probably a life-long risk. Methadone maintenance programs began in the 1960s in the United States in New York City. Once tolerance is developed, it may be used continually without harmful side effects. Dosage is important for effectiveness as are counseling, rehabilitation services, and employment support. Reduction in criminality and AIDS has been associated with methadone maintenance programs.

Abstract
A method for the preparation of an oligodeoxynucleotide, 20 bases in length, containing centrally located thio analogues of (6-4) pyrimidine-pyrimidinone thymine photo-dimers is reported. The approach is based on the selective irradiation, at 350 nm, of a Tp4ST (4ST = 4-thiothymidine) step within a 20-mer having the sequence: d(ACTCGGACCT(4sT)CGCTGTGAT). Conversion of the S5-(6-4)/S5-thietane pyrimidine-pyrimidinone, initially formed, to its S5-Dewar isomer is by a subsequent irradiation at 300 nm. Both of the photo-dimer-containing oligonucleotides were purified by HPLC (ion exchange and reverse phase) and characterised by base composition analysis. The S5-(6-4)/S5-thietane pyrimidine-pyrimidinone containing 20-mer has a characteristic UV absorbance at 320 nm and exhibits strong fluorescence when excited at this wavelength. As expected, conversion to the S5-Dewar isomer abolished both the 320 nm absorbance and the fluorescence emission. The lengths of the oligonucleotides produced allowed the formation of stable double-stranded DNA, by hybridisation to a complementary sequence. Examination of these duplexes by circular dichroism spectroscopy showed that they formed B-DNA, with little changes to their gross structure as compared to the parent duplex. However, local structural perturbations in the region of the photo-dimer cannot be excluded. The S5-(6-4)/S5-thietane photoproduct lowered the tm by 10.5 deg. C and the Dewar isomer by 12 deg. C. The degree of curvature induced in the DNA sequence by the introduction of the photo-dimers was assessed by analysing the migration of modified and unmodified multimer ladders on polyacrylamide gels. Both photoproducts induced considerable bending into the DNA. A comparison with a six-base-pair T tract, a bending standard that has a known bend angle of 19 degrees, gave values of around 47 degrees for the S5-(6-4)/S5-thietane product and about 28 degrees for the S5-Dewar isomer.

Abstract
We have captured an 8.7 A conformational change that takes place in the cleavage site of the hammerhead ribozyme during self-cleavage, using X-ray crystallography combined with physical and chemical trapping techniques. This rearrangement brings the hammerhead ribozyme from the ground state into a conformation that is poised to form the transition state geometry required for hammerhead RNA self-cleavage. Use of a 5'-C-methylated ribose adjacent to the cleavage site permits this ordinarily transient conformational change to be kinetically trapped and observed crystallographically after initiating the hammerhead ribozyme reaction in the crystal. Cleavage of the corresponding unmodified hammerhead ribozyme in the crystal under otherwise identical conditions is faster than in solution, indicating that we have indeed trapped a catalytically relevant intermediate form of this RNA enzyme.

Abstract
The MS2 RNA operator capsid offers an unparalleled opportunity to study sequence-specific protein-protein and RNA-protein interactions in molecular detail. RNA molecules encompassing the minimal translational operator recognition elements can be soaked into crystals of RNA-free coat protein shells, allowing the RNA to access the interior of the capsids and make contact with the operator binding sites. Correct interpretation of these structural studies depends critically on functional analysis in solution to confirm that the interactions seen in the crystal are not an artefact of the unusual approach used to generate the RNA-protein complexes. Here we present a series of in vivo and in vitro functional assays, using coat proteins carrying single amino acid substitutions at residues which either interact with the operator RNA or are involved in stabilizing the conformation of the FG loop, the site of the major quasi-equivalent conformational change. Variant operator RNAs have been assayed for coat protein affinity in vitro. The results reveal the robustness of the operator-coat protein interaction and the requirement for both halves of a protein dimer to contact RNA in order to achieve tight binding. They also suggest that there may be a direct link between the conformation of the FG loop and RNA binding.

Abstract
In MS2 assembly of phage particles results from an interaction between a coat protein dimer and a stem-loop of the RNA genome (the operator hairpin). Amino acid residues Thr45, which is universally conserved among the small RNA phages, and Thr59 are part of the specific RNA binding pocket and interact directly with the RNA; the former through a hydrogen bond, the latter through hydrophobic contacts. The crystal structures of MS2 protein capsids formed by mutants Thr45Ala and Thr59Ser, both with and without the 19 nt wild-type operator hairpin bound, are reported here. The RNA hairpin binds to these mutants in a similar way to its binding to wild-type protein. In a companion paper both mutants are shown to be deficient in RNA binding in an in vivo assay, but in vitro the equilibrium dissociation constant is significantly higher than wild-type for the Thr45Ala mutant. The change in binding affinity of the Thr45Ala mutant is probably a direct consequence of removal of direct hydrogen bonds between the protein and the RNA. The properties of the Thr59Ser mutant are more difficult to explain, but are consistent with a loss of non-polar contact.

Abstract
The crystal structure, at 2.8 A resolution, of an RNA aptamer bound to bacteriophage MS2 coat protein has been determined. It provides an opportunity to compare the interactions of MS2 coat protein and wild type operator with those of an aptamer, whose secondary structure differs from the wild type RNA in having a three-base loop (compared to a tetraloop) and an additional base pair between this loop and the sequence-specific recognition element in the stem. The RNA binds in the same location on the coat protein as the wild type operator and maintains many of the same RNA-protein interactions. In order to achieve this, the RNA stem loop undergoes a concerted rearrangement of the 3' side while leaving the 5' side and the loop interactions largely unchanged, illustrating the ability of RNA to present similar molecular recognition surfaces from distinct primary and secondary structures.

Abstract
Tourette's syndrome (TS), once considered a rare disorder, has been investigated extensively in the last two decades. It is inherited, usually beginning in childhood, and waxes and wanes, usually decreasing in frequency and severity in adolescence and early adulthood. Pharmacotherapy is the usual treatment approach, reducing frequency and severity of symptoms, but it is not a cure and often has side effects. Psychological help for people with TS and their families may be needed for this complex disorder.

Abstract
Crystal structures of two complexes between recombinant MS2 capsids and RNA operator fragments have been determined at 2.7 A resolution. The coat protein of the RNA bacteriophage MS2 is bifunctional; it forms the icosahedral virus shell to protect the viral nucleic acid and it acts as a translational repressor by binding with high specificity to a unique site on the RNA, a single stem-loop structure, containing the initiation codon of the gene for the viral replicase. In order to determine the structure of these protein-RNA complexes, we have used chemically synthesized variants of the stem-loop fragment and soaked them into crystals of recombinant capsids. The RNA stem-loop, as bound to the protein, forms a crescent-like structure and interacts with the surface of the beta-sheet of a coat protein dimer. It makes protein contacts with seven phosphate groups on the 5' side of the stem-loop, with a pyrimidine base at position -5, which stacks onto a tyrosine, and with two exposed adenine bases, one in the loop and one at a bulge in the stem. Replacement of the wild-type uridine with a cytosine at position -5 increases the affinity of the RNA to the dimer significantly. The complex with RNA stem-loop having cytosine at this position differs from that of the wild-type complex mainly by having one extra intramolecular RNA interaction and one extra water-mediated hydrogen bond.

Abstract
Munchausen syndrome (MS) is characterized by patients' chronic and relentless pursuit of medical treatment for combinations of symptoms of consciously self-inflicted injury and falsely reported symptomatology. MS patients are adults, as are perpetrators of Munchausen syndrome by proxy (MSBP). MSBP is an unusual form of child abuse in which a parent, usually the mother, brings a child for medical attention with symptoms falsified or directly induced by the mother. Most reports of MSBP have been of a few cases appearing in medical and pediatric literature. Motivation in both disorders is unclear, and diagnosis and treatment present difficult problems that require more research.

Abstract
The crystal structure of an unmodified hammerhead RNA in the absence of divalent metal ions has been solved, and it was shown that this ribozyme can cleave itself in the crystal when divalent metal ions are added. This biologically active RNA fold is the same as that found previously for two modified hammerhead ribozymes. Addition of divalent cations at low pH makes it possible to capture the uncleaved RNA in metal-bound form. A conformational intermediate, having an additional Mg(II) bound to the cleavage-site phosphate, was captured by freeze-trapping the RNA at an active pH prior to cleavage. The most significant conformational changes were limited to the active site of the ribozyme, and the changed conformation requires only small additional movements to reach a proposed transition-state.

Abstract
Depression occurs in 40% to 50% of Parkinson's disease (PD) patients. From research over the last decade, this co-occurrence appears to be more than an emotional reaction to disability. Replacement of the neurotransmitter, dopamine, benefits the PD motor functions, and the neurotransmitter, serotonin, in antidepressants, reduces depressive symptoms. However, identification of the physiological linkage between PD and depression continues to evade research efforts.

Abstract
A screening of a range of common laboratory antibiotics for inhibition of the hammerhead ribozyme has shown that in addition to certain aminoglycosides (most notably neomycin B) the tetracyclines are also effective inhibitors, with chlorotetracycline being more effective than tetracycline. Inhibition by chlorotetracycline is not as strong as that by neomycin B but is more complicated, with at least two binding sites apparent. As with hammerhead inhibition by neomycin B, chlorotetracycline inhibition can be overcome by raising the concentration of the Mg2+ ion cofactor. We find that around six Mg2+ ions will displace neomycin B, compared with twelve for chlorotetracycline. Inhibition observed in the presence of mixtures of neomycin B and chlorotetracycline is consistent with separate binding sites on the hammerhead for these two classes of antibiotic. Under certain conditions of the mixing order and low concentration of chlorotetracycline, enhancement of single-turnover hammerhead cleavage by up to 20% is observed, with higher concentrations of antibiotic being inhibitory. We have also found that the presence of 2.5% (v/v) DMSO causes a 30% enhancement of the single-turnover cleavage. These results thus extend the range of known inhibitors of hammerhead cleavage, and also demonstrate how the cleavage can be accelerated.

Abstract
We report details of the synthesis and characterization of oligoribonucleotides containing 4-thiouridine or 2-pyrimidinone ribonucleoside (4HC). We have used these probes to examine the roles of the conserved pyrimidines in the central core of the hammerhead ribozyme. The effects on catalysis of singly-substituted hammerhead ribozyme and substrate strands were quantified in multiple-turnover reactions. Various effects were observed on kcat. and Km, with up to a 7-fold decrease and a 3-fold increase respectively. For substitutions with 4HC at positions 3 or 17, catalytic activity in single turnover reactions can be increased up to 8-fold equivalent to 40% of wild-type activity, by increasing the concentration of the Mg2+ cofactor, implying that these substitutions had a deleterious effect on Mg2+ binding. Calculations of the change in the apparent free energy of binding for variants at positions 3, 4 or 17 are each consistent with deletion of a single hydrogen-bond to an uncharged group in the ribozyme. The cytidine 5' to the scissile phosphate had not previously been thought to play a direct role in catalysis, however, removal of the exocyclic amino group decreased kcat. 4-fold. Recently, the crystal structures of a hammerhead ribozyme bound to either a non-cleavable 2'-deoxy substrate strand or a ribo-substrate strand have been reported. The kinetic properties of the variants described here are consistent with several key interactions seen in the crystals, in particular they provide experimental support for the assignment of the proposed catalytically active magnesium ion-binding site.

Abstract
We present the results of in vitro binding studies aimed at defining the key recognition elements on the MS2 RNA translational operator (TR) essential for complex formation with coat protein. We have used chemically synthesized operators carrying modified functional groups at defined nucleotide positions, which are essential for recognition by the phage coat protein. These experiments have been complemented with modification-binding interference assays. The results confirm that the complexes which form between TR and RNA-free phage capsids, the X-ray structure of which has recently been reported at 3.0 A, are identical to those which form in solution between TR and a single coat protein dimer. There are also effects on operator affinity which cannot be explained simply by the alteration of direct RNA-protein contacts and may reflect changes in the conformational equilibrium of the unliganded operator. The results also provide support for the approach of using modified oligoribonucleotides to investigate the details of RNA-ligand interactions.

Abstract
The RNA bacteriophage MS2 is a convenient model system for the study of protein-RNA interactions. The MS2 coat protein achieves control of two distinct processes--sequence-specific RNA encapsidation and repression of replicase translation--by binding to an RNA stem-loop structure of 19 nucleotides containing the initiation codon of the replicase gene. The binding of a coat protein dimer to this hairpin shuts off synthesis of the viral replicase, switching the viral replication cycle to virion assembly rather than continued replication. The operator fragment alone can trigger self-assembly of the phage capsid at low protein concentrations and a complex of about 90 RNA operator fragments per protein capsid has been described. We report here the crystal structure at 3.0 A resolution of a complex between recombinant MS2 capsids and the 19-nucleotide RNA fragment. It is the first example of a structure at this resolution for a sequence-specific protein-RNA complex apart from the transfer RNA synthetase complexes. The structure shows sequence-specific interactions between conserved residues on the protein and RNA bases essential for binding.

Research on multiple personality disorder (MPD) has burgeoned, and large-scale investigations indicate that a typical MPD patient is a woman, a victim of childhood abuse (especially sexual abuse), a person whose symptoms meet criteria for other psychiatric disorders, and a person who would employ many psychological defenses. Treatment approaches have frequently included hypnotherapy, which requires skill and caution.

Abstract
A general procedure for the purification of chemically synthesized oligoribonucleotides is reported. Purification based on the use of a single reverse-phase HPLC column with buffer systems of differing ion-pairing capacity is described. These methods have been applied to the preparation of a series of RNAs which range in size from 10 to 46 nucleotides. The yields obtained are high, up to 53% (based on isolated product compared to those obtained from final trityl assay). The purity of the isolated material is 96-99%. Thus with this general procedure, milligram quantities of extremely pure RNA can be efficiently obtained.

Abstract
Female subjects performed 40 trials of an easy or difficult digit-recognition task while being exposed to intermittent presentations of a noxious noise. Half (high instrumentality) were told that, if they performed well, there was a high chance that they would work without noise in a subsequent trial period. The rest (low instrumentality) were told that, if they performed well, there was a low chance that they would work without noise in the subsequent trial period. Thus, a good performance insured either a high or low probability of alleviating the aversive stimulus. Results indicated that systolic responsiveness was proportional to task demand when the instrumentality of alleviative behavior was high, but low under both task conditions when the instrumentality of alleviative behavior was low. Reaction time and performance data were generally consistent with the view that these effects were due to group differences in task engagement, or 'active coping'. The main findings conceptually replicate and extend results from two previous studies that crossed difficulty and instrumentality manipulations. They also call further into question familiar theoretical conceptions that intimate direct effects of incentive value and perceived control on cardiovascular reactivity.

Abstract
Natural cytotoxicity (natural killer, NK, and lymphokine-activated killer, LAK, activity) was documented in 12 patients with metastatic colorectal cancer, both before and after a 5-day course of continuous therapy with intravenous recombinant interleukin-2 (rIL-2). Treatment induced a substantial increase in circulating CD56+ lymphocytes (pretreatment: 12.1 +/- 6.9%, mean +/- SD; posttreatment: 39.2 +/- 6.9%. Maximal NK cell activity was induced by treatment with rIL-2 but only suboptimal augmentation of LAK cell cytotoxicity was obtained. This study indicates that although continuous infusion of rIL-2 does have a significant effect on natural cytotoxicity, this is suboptimal and further studies are necessary to define the most efficacious immunity-enhancing regimens of therapy, thereby hopefully improving clinical outcome of rIL-2 treatment.

Abstract
A case of a hyperdense renal cortical cyst resulting from cyst puncture and opacification 28 months previously is reported. Prolonged retention of water-soluble iodinated contrast material is an unusual cause of a hyperdense renal cyst, which has not previously been described. The findings on serial computed tomography (CT) and chemical analysis are presented and discussed.

Abstract
Psychoendocrinological studies have opened a new approach to understanding affective disorders. In this study, the links of affective illnesses to changes in endocrine secretions--particularly adrenal, gonadal, growth, pineal, thyroidal, and prolactin--were reviewed with the object of adding to the number of depressed whose symptoms can be relieved.
