Abstract
PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE(S) To analyze the diagnostic capability of PET-PSMA in clinical practice in patients with occult biochemical recurrence of prostate carcinoma with PSA values less than 2ng/ml. MATERIALS/METHODS The first 116 patients who underwent PSMA 18F-DCFPyL PET/TC at the centers participating in the study for occult biochemical recurrence of prostatic neoplasia were selected. All patients had low PSA values (<2ng/ml). The studies were visually assessed by two experts in Nuclear Medicine, and classified dichotomously as positive or negative/inconclusive. The diagnostic capacity of the test was determined according to the PSA values, as well as the densities by groups. Descriptive statistical analysis was performed. The AUC was evaluated, determining the optimal cut-off point and its precision parameters. RESULTS The retrospective analysis showed that 66/116 patients (56.9%) were positive, with statistically significant differences in the medians of the positive group (AUC 0.77) and 50/116 (43.1%) patients were negative (AUC 0.42). The study of densities by group showed a marked clustering of the negative/ inconclusive studies in PSA values less than 0.5 ng/ml. Correlation was observed between the PSA values and the detection capability of the test (AUC: 0,74). The optimal cut-off point calculated was 0,55 which showed a sensitivity of 0,75 and specificity of 0,68. CONCLUSION PET-PSMA shows excellent diagnostic capability even in strictly selected patients with PSA values < 2ng/ml. Its indication with values < 0.5ng/mL should be assessed according to individual risk. In 56.9% of the patients in the study the positive result could influence changes in therapeutic strategy.

Abstract
The increased presence of secondary micro/nanoplastics (MNPLs) in the environment requires urgent studies on their potentially hazardous effects on exposed organisms, including humans. In this context, it is essential to obtain representative MNPL samples for such purposes. In our study, we have obtained true-to-life NPLs resulting from the degradation, via sanding, of opaque PET bottles. Since these bottles contain titanium (TiO2NPs), the resulting MNPLs also contain embedded metal. The obtained PET(Ti)NPLs were extensively characterized from a physicochemical point of view, confirming their nanosized range and their hybrid composition. This is the first time these types of NPLs are obtained and characterized. The preliminary hazard studies show their easy internalization in different cell lines, without apparent general toxicity. The demonstration by confocal microscopy that the obtained NPLs contain Ti samples offers this material multiple advantages. Thus, they can be used in in vivo approaches to determine the fate of NPLs after exposure, escaping from the existing difficulties to follow up MNPLs in biological samples.

Abstract
The presence of plastic waste in our environment has continued growing and become an important environmental concern. Because of its degradation into micro- and nanoplastics (MNPLs), MNPLs are becoming environmental pollutants of special environmental/health concern. Since ingestion is one of the main exposure routes to MNPLs, the potential effects of digestion on the physicochemical/biological characteristics of polystyrene nanoplastics (PSNPLs) were determined. The results indicated a high tendency of digested PSNPLs to agglomerate and a differential presence of proteins on their surface. Interestingly, digested PSNPLs showed greater cell uptake than undigested PSNPLs in all three tested cell lines (TK6, Raji-B, and THP-1). Despite these differences in cell uptake, no differences in toxicity were observed except for high and assumed unrealistic exposures. When oxidative stress and genotoxicity induction were determined, the low effects observed after exposure to undigested PDNPLs were not observed in the digested ones. This indicated that the greater ability of digested PSNPLs to internalize was not accompanied by a greater hazard. This type of analysis should be performed with other MNPLs of varying sizes and chemical compositions.

Abstract
Temporary tattoos and dyes are increasing popularity as an alternative to permanent ones. However, knowledge on its elementary composition is scarce and, this scientific gap can potentially make them a source of heavy metal exposure on humans. The present research aimed to explore the possibility of using the inorganic chemical signature to characterize natural pigments-based products and to evaluate the heavy metal content in jagua temporary tattoos and henna temporary hair dyes and tattoos. Thirty-four different samples of commercial products were analyzed for the presence and quantity of eleven trace elements (Al, Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, Ba, and Pb) by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The overall mean concentrations varied between 0.02 and 973 μg g-1 in solid samples or 0.01-1878 μg g-1 for paste ones, wherein potential fake products were uncovered. None of the 34 samples considered comply with the current European Cosmetics Regulation. Samples were differentiated according to their Cr, Zn, Ba, and Pb content. The overall results revealed highly variable levels in the investigated samples, which leads us to suggest detailed quality controls of these materials, due the fact that their continued use can origin potential threat to human health.

Abstract
A scalable procedure with minimum energy requirements, MSAT (Medium Scale Ambient Temperature), in combination with solvents generally recognized as safe (GRAS), has been optimized to obtain polyphenolic extracts from white grape (Vitis vinifera) marc. The solvents considered were propylene glycol (Pg), ethanol (Et), and ethyl lactate (Lc), as well as their respective hydro-organic mixtures. In a first approach, the operating parameters were optimized through a response surface matrix: extraction solvent volume (range 10-150 mL), marc mass (range 20-200 g) and marc/dispersant mass ratio (range 0.5-2 g⋅g-1), using the total polyphenol content (TPC) and the antioxidant activity (AA) of the extracts as response parameters. The highest TPC (5,918 mgGAE⋅L-1) and AA (44 mmolTE⋅L-1) values were obtained using 200 g marc and 100 mL solvent. Regarding the type of solvent, a better response was reached with Lc > Et > Pg > H2O obtaining a polyphenol concentration of 252 mg⋅L-1 for the hydro-organic isovolumetric ratio of ethyl lactate. In addition, the stability of the extracts was studied for 62 days. The effect of factors such as temperature, light exposure, and oxidative reactivity was evaluated. The bioactivity indices showed no changes with the storage conditions of the extracts in the first month of analysis, after which 75% of the antioxidant activity as the concentration of the polyphenolic profile (204 mg⋅L-1) remains. The absence of reactive oxygen and the cooling of the extract (4°C) were the most determining factors (p < 0.05) in modulating the stability of the total polyphenolic profile.

Abstract
Micro and nanoplastics (MNPLs) are emergent environmental pollutants requiring urgent information on their potential risks to human health. One of the problems associated with the evaluation of their undesirable effects is the lack of representative samples, matching those resulting from the environmental degradation of plastic wastes. To such end, we propose an easy method to obtain polyethylene terephthalate nanoplastics from water plastic bottles (PET-NPLs) but, in principle, applicable to any other plastic goods sources. An extensive characterization indicates that the proposed process produces uniform samples of PET-NPLs of around 100 nm, as determined by using AF4 and multi-angle and dynamic light scattering methodologies. An important point to be highlighted is that to avoid the metal contamination resulting from methods using metal blades/burrs for milling, trituration, or sanding, we propose to use diamond burrs to produce metal-free samples. To visualize the toxicological profile of the produced PET-NPLs we have evaluated their ability to be internalized by cells, their cytotoxicity, their ability to induce oxidative stress, and induce DNA damage. In this preliminary approach, we have detected their cellular uptake, but without the induction of significant biological effects. Thus, no relevant increases in toxicity, reactive oxygen species (ROS) induction, or DNA damage -as detected with the comet assay- have been observed. The use of representative samples, as produced in this study, will generate relevant data in the discussion about the potential health risks associated with MNPLs exposures.

Abstract
The potential genotoxicity of titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles (NPs) is a conflictive topic because both positive and negative findings have been reported. To add clarity, we have carried out a study with two cell lines (V79-4 and A549) to evaluate the effects of TiO2 NPs (NM-101), with a diameter ranging from 15 to 60 nm, at concentrations 1-75 μg/cm2. Using two different dispersion procedures, cell uptake was determined by Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). Mutagenicity was evaluated using the Hprt gene mutation test, while genotoxicity was determined with the comet assay, detecting both DNA breaks and oxidized DNA bases (with formamidopyrimidine glycosylase - Fpg). Cell internalization, as determined by TEM, shows TiO2 NM-101 in cytoplasmic vesicles, as well as close to and inside the nucleus. Such internalization did not depend on the state of agglomeration, nor the dispersion used. In spite of such internalization, no cytotoxicity was detected in V79-4 cells (relative growth activity and plating efficiency assays) or in A549 cells (AlamarBlue assay) after exposure lasting for 24 h. However, a significant decrease in the relative growth activity was detected at longer exposure times (48 and 72 h) and at the highest concentration 75 µg/cm2. When the modified enzyme-linked alkaline comet assay was performed on A549 cells, although no significant induction of DNA damage was detected, a positive concentration-effects relationship was observed (Spearman's correlation = 0.9, p 0.0001). Furthermore, no significant increase of DNA oxidized purine bases was observed. When the frequency of Hprt gene mutants was determined in V79-4 cells, no increase was observed in the exposed cells, relative to the unexposed cultures. Our general conclusion is that, under our experimental conditions, TiO2 NM-101 exposure does not exert mutagenic effects despite the evidence of NP uptake by V79-4 cells.

Abstract
Micro/nanoplastics (MNPLs) are considered emergent pollutants widely spread over all environmental compartments. Although their potential biological effects are being intensively evaluated, many doubts remain about their potential health effects in humans. One of the most underdeveloped fields is the determination of the potential tumorigenic risk of MNPLs exposure. To shed light on this topic, we have designed a wide battery of different hallmarks of cancer applied to prone-to-transformed progress MEF cells exposed to polystyrene nanoplastics (PSNPLs) in the long term (6 months). Interestingly, most of the evaluated hallmarks of cancer are exacerbated after exposure, independently if they are associated with an early tumoral phenotype (changes in stress-related genes, or microRNA deregulation), advanced tumoral phenotype (growing independently of anchorage ability, and migration capacity), or an aggressive tumoral phenotype (invasion potential, changes in pluripotency markers, and ability to grow to form tumorspheres). This set of obtained data constitutes a relevant warning on the potential carcinogenic risk associated with long-term exposures to MNPLs, specifically that induced by the PSNPLs evaluated in this study.

Abstract
Temporary tattoos and dyes constitute a great analytical challenge in relation to the regulatory control of their ingredients. Most of these commercial products are not labeled according to their content and their chemical nature is highly diverse. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze these complex samples to evaluate the potential presence of metallic impurities, to ensure the safety of cosmetic products contributing to health protection. This study proposes a multi-analytical methodology, which includes handheld X-ray fluorescence (h-XRF) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), complemented by variable pressure scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry (VP-SEM-EDS) to fully characterize 34 commercial samples of jagua and henna tattoos and dyes. The approach allowed the identification of the main constituents providing complementary compositional data and differences between sample types were established. In addition, information on the degree of natural pigments homogeneity was also obtained. The results' discussion considering the current European cosmetics regulation may be useful to support the drafting of safety requirements and specific regulation.

Abstract
The increasing accumulation of plastic waste and the widespread presence of its derivatives, micro- and nanoplastics (MNPLs), call for an urgent evaluation of their potential health risks. In the environment, MNPLs coexist with other known hazardous contaminants and, thus, an interesting question arises as to whether MNPLs can act as carriers of such pollutants, modulating their uptake and their harmful effects. In this context, we have examined the interaction and joint effects of two relevant water contaminants: arsenic and polystyrene nanoplastics (PSNPLs), the latter being a model of nanoplastics. Since both agents are persistent pollutants, their potential effects have been evaluated under a chronic exposure scenario and measuring different effect biomarkers involved in the cell transformation process. Mouse embryonic fibroblasts deficient for oxidative DNA damage repair mechanisms, and showing a cell transformation status, were used as a sensitive cell model. Such cells were exposed to PSNPLs, arsenic, and a combination PSNPLs/arsenic for 12 weeks. Interestingly, a physical interaction between both pollutants was demonstrated by using TEM/EDX methodologies. Results also indicate that the continuous co-exposure enhances the DNA damage and the aggressive features of the initially transformed phenotype. Remarkably, co-exposed cells present a higher proportion of spindle-like cells within the population, an increased capacity to grow independently of anchorage, as well as enhanced migrating and invading potential when compared to cells exposed to arsenic or PSNPLs alone. This study highlights the need for further studies exploring the long-term effects of contaminants of emerging concern, such as MNPLs, and the importance of considering the behavior of mixtures as part of the hazard and human risk assessment approaches.

Abstract
Today, the skills-based approach is increasingly in demand by companies due, in large part, to the fact that it favors the management of human resources by focusing on individual capabilities; which, finally, improves the job profile of a company. As a result, choosing the right candidates has become increasingly selective. Universities, therefore, need to teach skills to improve the incorporation of graduates into the workplace making it as successful as possible. For this reason, it is of special relevance to know if college students consider that the acquisition of skills is key for their incorporation into the workplace. The main objective of this study was to analyze and compare the importance assigned to the acquisition of basic skills in the university education of 694 students studying four different bachelor degrees: pedagogy, early childhood education, primary education, and psychology. For this purpose, a Likert-type questionnaire on basic skills was distributed with four possible options and the following five dimensions that grouped basic skills: organizational and planning capacity; access to information sources; analysis and synthesis of texts, situations, and people; teamwork; and problem solving. The results show that as a whole all students across different bachelor degrees gave a high score to the acquisition of basic skills, with early childhood education students giving it greater importance compared to the students from other disciplines and, more specifically, differences were observed in some dimensions depending on the bachelor degree that they have started.

Abstract
Adolescence is the stage of development where the reward and emotional regulation systems are yet to be adjusted and where most excessive behaviors start, like smartphone abuse. In addition, in this evolutionary period adolescents are more susceptible to behavioral changes through specific interventions or educational programs. Thus, it is fundamental to analyze the personality profile of those adolescents showing excessive mobile phone usage to properly approach later prevention strategies. Impulsivity is one of the most repeated variables associated with teenage addictions, although it has been observed that not all impulsive behaviors need to be detrimental. The aim of this study is to analyze how impulsivity affects smartphone addiction directly, but also indirectly, by assessing its association with sensation seeking variables (thrill and adventure seeking, experience seeking, disinhibition, and boredom susceptibility) which are in turn decisive when using these technologies improperly. The sample was made up of 614 adolescents aged 13-18 attending secondary education from Burgos, Spain. Dickman Impulsivity Inventory, Sensation Seeking Scale, and Ad-hoc questionnaire on adolescent self-perception as to smartphone use were applied. Results show that 41.4% of participants admit to abusing smartphones sometimes, while 18.3% admit to abusing them more frequently and 24% to, at least ever, having defined themselves as smartphone addicts. Stepwise regression analysis revealed that gender (female), dysfunctional impulsivity and sensation seeking (disinhibition and thrill and adventure seeking) evidence 15.7% of variance in smartphone abuse. In addition, sensation seeking (thrill and adventure seeking, disinhibition, and boredom susceptibility) were found to mediate the relationship between dysfunctional impulsivity and smartphone abuse. Therefore, dysfunctional impulsivity was directly connected with teenage smartphone abuse, but also had an indirect stronger association through thrill and adventure seeking, disinhibition and boredom susceptibility.

Abstract
Antibodies to phospholipids (aPL) and associated proteins are a hallmark in the diagnosis of anti-phospholipid syndrome (APS). Those included in the classification criteria are the lupus anticoagulant (LA) and the IgG and IgM isotypes of anticardiolipin (aCL) and anti-beta-2 glycoprotein I (β2GPI) antibodies. Non-classification criteria markers such as autoantibodies that recognize the phosphatidylserine/prothrombin (aPS/PT) complex have been proposed as biomarkers for APS. Studies of aPS/PT antibodies have shown a strong correlation to clinical manifestations and LA. We aimed to study the value and the persistence of aPS/PT IgG and IgM antibodies in a cohort of consecutive patients with clinical suspicion of APS and their utility as thrombotic risk markers. Our study, with 103 patients, demonstrates that persistently positive results for aPS/PT IgG antibodies were significantly associated with APS classification, thrombosis, triple aPL positivity, LA positive result, and the Global APS Score (GAPSS) > than 9 points (p < 0.01, for each condition). On the other hand, no association was seen with pregnancy morbidity (p = 0.56) and SLE (p = 0.07). Persistence of aPS/PT antibodies, defined according to the current laboratory classification criteria, likely improves the diagnosis and clinical assessment of patients with APS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Porto-sinusoidal vascular disease (PSVD) is a rare disease that requires excluding cirrhosis and other causes of portal hypertension for its diagnosis because it lacks a specific diagnostical test. Although it has been occasionally associated with autoimmune diseases, the pathophysiology of PSVD remains unknown. The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential role of autoimmunity in the pathophysiology and diagnosis of PSVD. METHODS Thirty-seven consecutive patients with PSVD and 39 with cirrhosis matched by gender, signs of portal hypertension and liver function were included (training set). By using Indirect Immunofluorescence, ELISA and slot-blot methods data 22 autoantibodies were identified in patients with PSVD and cirrhosis. Presence of anti-endothelial cells antibodies (AECA) was assayed by a cell-based ELISA. Thirty-one PSVD, 40 cirrhosis patients, 15 patients with splenomegaly associated with haematological disease and 14 healthy donors were included in a validation set. FINDINGS The proportion of patients with at least one positive antibody was statistically significantly higher in patients with PSVD compared with cirrhosis (92% vs 56%; P < .01). Specifically, AECA were significantly more frequent in PSVD than in cirrhosis (38% vs 15%; P = .013). Results were confirmed in the validation set. In the overall population, presence of AECA had a 63% positive predictive value for diagnosing PSVD and a 71% negative predictive value, with a specificity of 94% when the 1/16 level is used as cut-off. AECA positive serum samples react with a 68-72 kDa protein of human liver endothelial sinusoidal cells.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aquaculture sector now accounts for almost 50% of all fish for human consumption and is anticipated to provide 62% by 2030. Innovative strategies are being sought to improve fish feeds and feed additives to enhance fish performance, welfare, and the environmental sustainability of the aquaculture industry. There is still a lack of knowledge surrounding the importance and functionality of the teleost gut microbiome in fish nutrition. In vitro gut model systems might prove a valuable tool to study the effect of feed, and additives, on the host's microbial communities. Several in vitro gut models targeted at monogastric vertebrates are now in operation. Here, we report the development of an Atlantic salmon gut model, SalmoSim, to simulate three gut compartments (stomach, pyloric caecum, and midgut) and associated microbial communities. RESULTS The gut model was established in a series of linked bioreactors seeded with biological material derived from farmed adult marine-phase salmon. We first aimed to achieve a stable microbiome composition representative of founding microbial communities derived from Atlantic salmon. Then, in biological triplicate, the response of the in vitro system to two distinct dietary formulations (fishmeal and fishmeal free) was compared to a parallel in vivo trial over 40 days. Metabarcoding based on 16S rDNA sequencing qPCR, ammoniacal nitrogen, and volatile fatty acid measurements were undertaken to survey the microbial community dynamics and function. SalmoSim microbiomes were indistinguishable (p = 0.230) from their founding inocula at 20 days and the most abundant genera (e.g., Psycrobacter, Staphylococcus, Pseudomonas) proliferated within SalmoSim (OTUs accounting for 98% of all reads shared with founding communities). Real salmon and SalmoSim responded similarly to the introduction of novel feed, with majority of the taxa (96% Salmon, 97% SalmoSim) unaffected, while a subset of taxa (e.g., a small fraction of Psychrobacter) was differentially affected across both systems. Consistent with a low impact of the novel feed on microbial fermentative activity, volatile fatty acid profiles were not significantly different in SalmoSim pre- and post-feed switch. CONCLUSION By establishing stable and representative salmon gut communities, this study represents an important step in the development of an in vitro gut system as a tool for the improvement of fish nutrition and welfare. The steps of the system development described in this paper can be used as guidelines to develop various other systems representing other fish species. These systems, including SalmoSim, aim to be utilised as a prescreening tool for new feed ingredients and additives, as well as being used to study antimicrobial resistance and transfer and fundamental ecological processes that underpin microbiome dynamics and assembly. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the impact of the routine use of musculoskeletal ultrasound (MSUS) in rheumatology clinics by comparing one clinic with on-site MSUS (REU 1) and four clinics without this resource, which need to refer patients for the MSUS exams (REU 2-5). METHODS The electronic medical records of all new patients at five rheumatology clinics during a 12-month period were reviewed. The impact of MSUS was analysed by comparing the percentage of direct discharges of patients from the different clinics, as an outcome of effectiveness, and the number and cost of radiology referrals for imaging exams (MSUS and MRI), as an outcome of cost-saving. RESULTS The medical records of 4923 patients were included in the study, distributed as follows: REU 1, 1464 (29.7%); REU 2, 1042 (21.2%); REU 3, 1089 (22.1%); REU 4, 579 (11.8%); and REU 5, 749 (15.2%). There were more direct discharges from REU 1 (34.4%) than from REU 2-5 (15.6%) (P<0.001). REU 1 made radiological referrals for X-rays, MRIs or MSUS exams in 773 (52.8%) patients, compared with 2626 (75.9%) patients in REU 2-5 (P<0.001). An estimation of costs for the clinical assessment of 1000 new patients revealed a cost-saving in REU 1 of €21 413 in MSUS and of €877 in MRI exams. CONCLUSION The implementation of on-site MSUS in a new-patient rheumatology clinic is cost-effective, facilitating the direct discharge of patients and reducing the number and cost of radiological referrals for imaging exams.

Abstract
The wide range and complexity of cosmetic formulations currently available on the market poses a challenge from an analytical point of view. In addition, during cosmetics manufacture, impurities coming from raw materials or formed by reaction of different organic compounds present in the formulation may be present. Their identification is mandatory to assure product quality and consumer health. In this work, micro-matrix solid-phase dispersion (μMSPD) is proposed as a multi-target sample preparation strategy to analyze a wide number of unexpected families of compounds including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), pesticides, plasticizers, nitrosamines, alkylphenols (APs), and alkylphenol ethoxylates (APEOs). Analytical determination was performed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) for the determination of 51 target compounds in a single run, whereas liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) was employed for the analysis of six APs and APEOs. Both methodologies were successfully validated in terms of linearity, accuracy, and precision in leave-on and rinse-off cosmetics. Limits of detection (LODs) were calculated in the low ng g−1, showing their suitability to determine trace levels of impurities and banned compounds with different chemical natures, providing useful tools to cosmetic control laboratories and companies.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to explore the factor structure of the MOS-SSS in a sample of community-dwelling Spanish older adults. The sample comprised 406 community-dwelling older adults aged between 65 to 99 years old (M age = 74.88, SD = 6.75). Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was performed, and four possible models were compared: the one-factor, the three-factor, the four-factor and the five-factor model, using an additional analysis with a second-order factor. The internal consistency reliability and convergent validity of the scale were also assessed. For the 19-item MOS-SSS scale, the five-factor model had the best fit to the data. All five subscales of the MOS-SSS showed adequate internal consistency, good convergent and discriminant validity. These findings contribute to the literature on the factor structure of the MOS-SSS in Spanish older adults. The MOS-SSS is a reliable and valid scale that can be used to assess Spanish older adults' social support perception for social services, health and in research contexts.

Abstract
In recent years the terms "micro-/nanoplastics" (MNPLs) have caught special attention due to the increasing levels by which humans are exposed. Among MNPLs, polystyrene nanoparticles (PSNPs) are one of the most represented MNPLs in the environment. These tiny particles may enter into the human body, translocate through human barriers, interacting with blood and lymphatic immune cells, and reaching secondary organs. By using three different human leukocytic cell lines: Raji-B (B-lymphocytes), TK6 (lymphoblasts) and THP-1 (monocytes), we pursued to determine the effects of these PSNPs on the immune cell population. With this aim, the three cell lines were exposed to spherical PSNPs of about 50 nm of diameter and cytotoxicity, cellular uptake, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, and genotoxicity were assessed at different time-points. Results show differences in all the measured endpoints, among the selected cell lines. Thus, whilst the monocytic THP-1 cells showed the highest particle internalization, no adverse effects were observed in such cells. On the other side, although Raji-B and TK6 showed lesser PSNPs uptake, mild toxicity, ROS production and genotoxicity were detected. These results highlight the importance of the cell line selection when the biological effects of PSNPs are evaluated.

Abstract
La Mucositis oral (MO) es una de las complicaciones más frecuentes y graves entre los pacientes sometidos a tratamientos de radioterapia y/o quimioterapia. Su impacto como evento adverso (EA) afecta directamente a las necesidades básicas, derivando incluso en la interrupción o retraso del tratamiento oncológico.
Este trabajo de revisión crítica de la literatura pretende analizar la efectividad de diferentes medidas no farmacológicas como alternativa en la prevención de la MO. La metodología llevada a cabo sigue un proceso planificado y estructurado con la pertinente búsqueda exhaustiva en diversas bases de datos y revistas científicas, tales como: Medline (OVID), Cinhal, Cochrane y Cuiden.
Existen numerosas medidas recogidas en la literatura para abordar la prevención de la MO tales como la crioterapia oral, miel, melaza de morera negra, silimarina, propóleo, polen de palmera datilera, enjuagues de clorhexidina y povidona yodada. La evidencia obtenida resulta inconcluyente, siendo necesario realizar más investigaciones.

ABSTRACT:
Oral Mucositis (OM) is one of the most frequent and serious complications of patients undergoing radiotherapy and / or chemotherapy treatments. Its impact as an adverse event (AE) directly affects basic needs, even leading to the interruption or delay of cancer treatment.
A bibliographic search has been done in order to analyze the effectiveness of different non-pharmacological measures as an alternative in preventing OM. The methodology carried out follows a planned and structured process with an exhaustive search in several databases and scientific journals, for example: Medline (OVID), Cinhal, Cochrane and Cuiden.
There are numerous measures collected in the literature to prevent OM such as: oral cryotherapy, honey, black mulberry molasses, silymarin, propolis, date palm pollen, chlorhexidine and povidone-iodine rinses. The evidence obtained is inconclusive, and further research is needed.

Abstract
The universal presence of micro-nanoplastics (MNPLs) and its relative unknown effects on human health is a concern demanding reliable data to evaluate their safety. As ingestion is one of the main exposure routes for humans, we have assessed their hazard using two in vitro models that simulate the human intestinal barrier and its associated lymphoid system. Two different coculture models (differentiated Caco-2/HT29 intestinal cells and Caco-2/HT29 + Raji-B cells) were exposed to polystyrene nanoparticles (PSNPs) for 24 h. Endpoints such as viability, membrane integrity, NPS localization and translocation, ROS induction, and genotoxic damage were evaluated to have a comprehensive view of their potentially harmful effects. No significant cytotoxic effects were observed in any of the analyzed systems. In addition, no adverse effects were detected in the integrity or in the permeability of the barrier model. Nevertheless, confocal microscopy analysis showed that MNPLs were highly uptaken by both of the barrier model systems, and that translocation across the membrane occurred. Thus, MNPLs were detected into Raji-B cells, placed in the basolateral compartment of the insert. The internalization followed a dose-dependent pattern, as assessed by flow cytometry. Nonetheless, no genotoxic or oxidative DNA damage induction was detected in either case. Finally, no variations in the transcription of oxidative and stress genes could be detected in any of the in vitro barrier models. Our results show that MNPLs can enter and cross the epithelial barrier of the digestive system, as demonstrated when Raji-B cells were included in the model, but without exerting apparent hazardous effects.

Abstract
El estudio de las necesidades de información en las empresas es una tarea compleja y urgente que se está acometiendo desde distintas vertientes, con el fin de ir completando el conocimiento que se tiene de este tipo de usuario de información. En este sentido, en el trabajo se estudian las necesidades de información de las empresas norteamericanas del estado de Indiana, a partir de una serie de entrevistas con responsables de centros de información y servicios de desarrollo, que atendían las distintas demandas de las empresas. Asimismo, en el trabajo se ha utilizado una encuesta realizada por la Universidad del Estado de Indiana sobre el uso y los tipos de información más demandados por las empresas.

Abstract
The genotoxicity of anatase/rutile TiO2 nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs, NM105 at 3, 15 and 75 µg/cm2) was assessed with the mammalian in-vitro Hypoxanthine guanine phosphoribosyl transferase (Hprt) gene mutation test in Chinese hamster lung (V79) fibroblasts after 24 h exposure. Two dispersion procedures giving different size distribution and dispersion stability were used to investigate whether the effects of TiO2 NPs depend on the state of agglomeration. TiO2 NPs were fully characterised in the previous European FP7 projects NanoTEST and NanoREG2. Uptake of TiO2 NPs was measured by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). TiO2 NPs were found in cytoplasmic vesicles, as well as close to the nucleus. The internalisation of TiO2 NPs did not depend on the state of agglomeration and dispersion used. The cytotoxicity of TiO2 NPs was measured by determining both the relative growth activity (RGA) and the plating efficiency (PE). There were no substantial effects of exposure time (24, 48 and 72 h), although a tendency to lower RGA at longer exposure was observed. No significant difference in PE values and no increases in the Hprt gene mutant frequency were found in exposed relative to unexposed cultures in spite of evidence of uptake of NPs by cells.

Abstract
In recent years, increasing global attention has focused on "microplastics" (MPs) and "nanoplastics" (NPs) resulting in many studies on the effects of these compounds on ecological and environmental aspects. These tiny particles (<5000 µm), predominantly derived from the degradation of plastics, pollute the marine and terrestrial ecosystems with the ability to enter into the food chain. In this manner, human consumption of food contaminated with MPs or NPs is unavoidable, but the related consequences remain to be determined. The aim of this review is to complement previous reviews on this topic by providing new studies related to exposure, absorption, and toxicity in mammalian in vivo and in vitro systems. With respect to novel information, gaps and limitations hindering attainment of firm conclusions as well as preparation of a reliable risk assessment are identified. Subsequently, recommendations for in vivo and in vitro testing methods are presented in order to perform further relevant and targeted research studies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Amorphous silica nanoparticles (SiO2 NPs) have been regarded as relatively benign nanomaterials, however, this widely held opinion has been questioned in recent years by several reports on in vitro and in vivo toxicity. Surface chemistry, more specifically the surface silanol content, has been identified as an important toxicity modulator for SiO2 NPs. Here, quantitative relationships between the silanol content on SiO2 NPs, free radical generation and toxicity have been identified, with the purpose of synthesizing safer-by-design fumed silica nanoparticles. RESULTS Consistent and statistically significant trends were seen between the total silanol content, cell membrane damage, and cell viability, but not with intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS), in the macrophages RAW264.7. SiO2 NPs with lower total silanol content exhibited larger adverse cellular effects. The SAEC epithelial cell line did not show any sign of toxicity by any of the nanoparticles. Free radical generation and surface reactivity of these nanoparticles were also influenced by the temperature of combustion and total silanol content. CONCLUSION Surface silanol content plays an important role in cellular toxicity and surface reactivity, although it might not be the sole factor influencing fumed silica NP toxicity. It was demonstrated that synthesis conditions for SiO2 NPs influence the type and quantity of free radicals, oxidative stress, nanoparticle interaction with the biological milieu they come in contact with, and determine the specific mechanisms of toxicity. We demonstrate here that it is possible to produce much less toxic fumed silicas by modulating the synthesis conditions.

Abstract
The interesting physicochemical characteristics of nanomaterials (NMs) has brought about their increasing use and, consequently, their increasing presence in the environment. As emergent contaminants, there is an urgent need for new data about their potential side-effects on human health. Among their potential effects, the potential for DNA damage is of paramount relevance. Thus, in the context of the EU project NANoREG, the establishment of common robust protocols for detecting genotoxicity of NMs became an important aim. One of the developed protocols refers to the use of the comet assay, as a tool to detect the induction of DNA strand breaks. In this study, eight different NMs—TiO2NP (2), SiO2NP (2), ZnONP, CeO2NP, AgNP, and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT)—were tested using two different human lung epithelial cell lines (A549 and BEAS-2B). The comet assay was carried out with and without the use of the formamidopyrimidine glycosylase (FPG) enzyme to detect the induction of oxidatively damaged DNA bases. As a high throughput approach, we have used GelBond films (GBF) instead of glass slides, allowing the fitting of 48 microgels on the same GBF. The results confirmed the suitability of the comet assay as a powerful tool to detect the genotoxic potential of NMs. Specifically, our results indicate that most of the selected nanomaterials showed mild to significant genotoxic effects, at least in the A549 cell line, reflecting the relevance of the cell line used to determine the genotoxic ability of a defined NM.

Abstract
Background Stroke results in balance disorders and these directly affect autonomy and quality of life. The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to determine the efficacy of physical therapy (PT) on balance and postural control after stroke. Methods We included all randomized controlled trials assessing the efficacy of PT on balance and postural control in adult patients after stroke without language restriction. Medline, Embase/Scopus, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, PEDro, Pascal, and Francis databases were searched until January 2019. Primary outcomes were balance (Berg Balance scale and Postural Assessment Scale for Stroke) and postural control with postural deviation or stability measurement in sitting or standing static evaluation. A pair of independent reviewers selected studies, extracted data, and assessed risk of bias. Meta-analyses with subgroups (categories of PT, time post-stroke, and lesion location) and meta-regression (duration of PT) were conducted. Results A total of 145 studies (n = 5912) were selected from the 13,123 records identified. For balance, evidence was found in favor of the efficacy of functional task-training alone (standardized mean difference 0.39, 95% confidence interval [0.09; 0.68], heterogeneity I2 = 63%) or associated with musculoskeletal intervention and/or cardiopulmonary intervention (0.37, [0.19; 0.55], I2 = 48%), electrostimulation (0.91, [0.49; 1.34], I2 = 52%) immediately after intervention, compared to sham treatment or usual care (ST/UC). For postural deviation eyes open, assistive devices were more effective than no treatment (-0.21, [-0.37; -0.05], I2 = 0%) immediately after intervention; for postural stability eyes open, functional task-training and sensory interventions were more effective than ST/UC (0.97, [0.35; 1.59], I2 = 65% and 0.80, [0.46; 1.13], I2 = 37% respectively) immediately after intervention. Conclusions Functional task-training associated with musculoskeletal intervention and/or cardiopulmonary intervention and sensory interventions seem to be immediately effective in improving balance and postural stability, respectively. The heterogeneity of PT and the weak methodological quality of studies limited the interpretation and the confidence in findings.

Abstract
Hydroxytyrosol (HT) and its derivatives represent the minor components of Virgin Olive Oil (VOO)
that are of great interest for their pharmacological properties and among the most widely researched natural antioxidant
compounds. In this review, the occurrence and metabolic fate of HT and its precursors are presented prior
to discussing its beneficial effects on health. Bioavailability studies show that the metabolites detected in plasma
depend on the model used (animal or human), the HT source (simple molecule or complex precursors) and the
dose administered. However, in all cases HT sulphate appears to be the most ubiquitous metabolite in biofluids
and it seems probable that it is responsible to a great extent for HT biological effects. Epidemiological evidence
of HT and its derivatives against such lifestyle-associated pathologies as cancer, cardiovascular and neurodegenerative
diseases is reviewed together with the newest perspectives on the mechanisms of action based on in-vitro
and animal studies. According to the reviewed data, HT and its precursors could have the potential clinical use in
cardiovascular diseases; more epidemiological data is needed to demonstrate their neurodegenerative diseases and
cancer prevention.

Abstract
The cosmetic industry currently focuses on products with magnified or exaggerated effects or extremely long-lasting characteristics. There are also a number of related commercial products for which the regulatory framework is far from clear; they are called 'borderline', and the European authorities only recommend which regulations they need to comply with. In any case, all these products must be safe under reasonable conditions of use in accordance with the applicable laws in force in the European Union (EU) framework. In this context, adequate analytical methodology is needed to evaluate the degree of compliance. Ultrasound Assisted Extraction (UAE) procedures for the analysis of 70 cosmetic ingredients have therefore been developed in this work. Moreover, for cosmetics with plastic applicators, a Supported-UAE (Sup-UAE) method was also opportunely optimized to check if a partial transfer of plasticizers to the cosmetics-and thereby to the consumers-could happen. In a survey of 50 commercial products (30 'extreme' and 20 'borderline'), the methods afforded mean recoveries of about 100% and RSD values lower than 5% for UAE and 10% for Sup-UAE, and with detection limits far below the legal requirements, for all the target compounds, thereby demonstrating their analytical suitability. Results are discussed in detail for phthalates, fragrances (musks and allergens) and some frequent preservatives. Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was twofold: on the one hand to analyze whether extroversion predicts social support in older people, and on the other hand to determine if different types of social support mediate the effect that extroversion has on older people's life satisfaction. METHOD The sample comprised 406 community-dwelling older adults (M = 74.88, SD = 6.75) from urban areas of Granada, southern Spain. RESULTS Extroversion was positively correlated with emotional (r = .23) and with affectionate support (r = .30). Extroversion and all types of social support also positively correlated with life satisfaction. The multiple mediation analysis revealed that when age, gender, marital status and loneliness were controlled, extroversion predicted emotional (B = .008, p < .01) and affectionate support (B = .015, p < .01) and emotional and affectionate support mediated the association between extroversion and life satisfaction (total effect: B = .034, SE = .0024, p < .001, r2 = .295). Results from this study highlight the fact supportive social relations are crucial for older people's life satisfaction. Also emotional and affectionate support constitutes important explanatory mechanisms of the indirect effect of extroversion on life satisfaction. CONCLUSION Personality traits should be considered when interventions aimed at promoting life satisfaction in old age and successful aging are designed.

Abstract
Elucidating receptor-ligand and protein-protein interactions represents an attractive alternative for designing effective Plasmodium vivax control methods. This article describes the ability of P. vivax rhoptry neck proteins 2 and 4 (RON2 and RON4) to bind to human reticulocytes. Biochemical and cellular studies have shown that two PvRON2- and PvRON4-derived conserved regions specifically interact with protein receptors on reticulocytes marked by the CD71 surface transferrin receptor. Mapping each protein fragment's binding region led to defining the specific participation of two 20 amino acid-long regions selectively competing for PvRON2 and PvRON4 binding to reticulocytes. Binary interactions between PvRON2 (ligand) and other parasite proteins, such as PvRON4, PvRON5, and apical membrane antigen 1 (AMA1), were evaluated and characterised by surface plasmon resonance. The results revealed that both PvRON2 cysteine-rich regions strongly interact with PvAMA1 Domains II and III (equilibrium constants in the nanomolar range) and at a lower extent with the complete PvAMA1 ectodomain and Domains I and II. These results strongly support that these proteins participate in P. vivax's complex invasion process, thus providing new pertinent targets for blocking P. vivax merozoites' specific entry to their target cells.

Abstract
Cellulose is one of the most abundant natural polymers, is readily available, biodegradable, and inexpensive. Recently, interest is growing around nanoscale cellulose due to the sustainability of these materials, the novel properties, and the overall low environmental impact. The rapid expansion of nanocellulose uses in various applications makes the study of the toxicological properties of these materials of great importance to public health regulators. However, most of the current toxicological studies are highly conflicting, inconclusive, and contradictory. The major reasons for these discrepancies are the lack of standardized methods to produce industry-relevant reference nanocellulose and relevant characterization that will expand beyond the traditional cellulose characterization for applications. In order to address these issues, industry-relevant synthesis platforms were developed to produce nanocellulose of controlled properties that can be used as reference materials in toxicological studies. Herein, two types of nanocellulose were synthesized, cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) and cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) using the friction grinding platform and an acid hydrolysis approach respectively. The nanocellulose structures were characterized extensively regarding their physicochemical properties, including testing for endotoxins and bacteria contamination.

Abstract
Cellulose is one of the most abundant natural polymers, is readily available, biodegradable, and inexpensive. Recently, interest is growing around nanoscale cellulose due to the sustainability of these materials, the novel properties, and the overall low environmental impact. The rapid expansion of nanocellulose uses in various applications makes the study of the toxicological properties of these materials of great importance to public health regulators. However, most of the current toxicological studies are highly conflicting, inconclusive, and contradictory. The major reasons for these discrepancies are the lack of standardized methods to produce industry-relevant reference nanocellulose and relevant characterization that will expand beyond the traditional cellulose characterization for applications. In order to address these issues, industry-relevant synthesis platforms were developed to produce nanocellulose of controlled properties that can be used as reference materials in toxicological studies. Herein, two types of nanocellulose were synthesized, cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) and cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) using the friction grinding platform and an acid hydrolysis approach respectively. The nanocellulose structures were characterized extensively regarding their physicochemical properties, including testing for endotoxins and bacteria contamination.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to analyze the combined effect of socio-demographic characteristics and activity level on coping strategies and to test which of these variables has a greater impact on coping. METHOD A sample of 243 men and women aged 55-99 years old was selected from different elderly activity centers in Granada, Spain, using a convenience sampling. Associations between eight coping strategies measured by Coping Strategies Inventory and the above mentioned variables were examined using a Multiple Indicator and Multiple Causes model. RESULTS Age was negatively related with problem solving, express emotions and social support. Activity level was positively related with problem solving, cognitive restructuring, express emotions and social support and it was negatively associated with social withdrawal. Gender only predicted the scores in self-criticism and living alone was related with higher emotional expression. Participation in creative activities, attending University for the third age and practicing physical exercise were related with differences in the use of several coping strategies. CONCLUSIONS There is a complex relationship between socio-demographic characteristics, activity level and the coping strategies used by the elderly. It is important to understand this relationship in order to identify older adults who use ineffective coping, and to subsequently include them in intervention programs to improve their coping abilities.

Abstract
AIM Since controversial results have been obtained in studies dealing with nanoceria usefulness in biomedical applications, the transforming effects of long-term exposure to nanoceria in lung epithelial cells, alone or together with cigarette smoke condensate (CSC), were evaluated. MATERIALS & METHODS In vitro cell transformation techniques were used to study several hallmarks of carcinogenesis. Morphology, cell proliferation, gene expression, cell migration, anchorage-independent cell growth and cell secretome were analyzed. RESULTS & CONCLUSION Data evidence no transforming ability of nanoceria, but support a synergistic role on CSC's transforming ability. A more noticeable spindle-like phenotype, increased proliferation rate, higher degree of differentiation status dysregulation, higher migration capacity, increased anchorage-independent cell growth and higher levels of MMP-9 and cell growth promoting capability, were observed. In addition, nanoceria co-exposure exacerbates the expression of FRA-1.

Abstract
En esta investigación se ha analizado la influencia de las actitudes hacia la discapacidad en el rendimiento académico de los alumnos del Grado de Maestro en Educación Infantil de la Universidad de Jaén que cursan la asignatura de Trastornos del desarrollo. Investigaciones como las de Alcañiz, Chulià, Riera, Ruis y Santolino (2016) estudian la relación entre las competencias necesarias en el desempeño profesional y el rendimiento académico. Se considera que una de las competencias esenciales en los futuros docentes son las actitudes hacia la discapacidad puesto que fomentan el desarrollo integral de estas personas (Moreno, Rodríguez, Saldaña y Aguilera, 2006). Para la investigación se ha realizado un estudio descriptivo transversal a 48 universitarios que cursan la asignatura de Trastornos del desarrollo en el Grado de Educación Infantil. A estos alumnos se les ha aplicado la Escala de Actitudes hacia las personas con discapacidad (EAPD) de Verdugo, Arias y Jenaro (1997) la cual consta de 37 ítems agrupados en cinco factores. Se han analizado las diferencias según las variables género, contacto previo, razón, frecuencia, calidad y tipo de discapacidad en las escalas del cuestionario y a fin de conocer la influencia de la actitud hacia la discapacidad sobre el rendimiento académico se ha tenido en cuenta su calificación en la asignatura tanto en la parte práctica como teórica. Los resultados muestran que existen diferencias significativas en la actitud hacia la discapacidad en función de las variables de contacto previo con estas personas, la razón y la calidad del mismo. Respecto a la influencia de las variables del cuestionario en el rendimiento académico se observa que explican el 19.2% de la varianza total en de la nota de prácticas y el 14.5% de la varianza total en de la nota de teoría.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was on one hand to examine the associations between health impairment and life satisfaction, as well as social support and life satisfaction, and on the other, to analyze the moderating effect of social support with regard to health impairment and life satisfaction in a sample of community-dwelling older adults from urban areas of Granada, southern Spain. METHOD This was a cross-sectional survey in which a sample of 406 older adults with ages between 65 and 99 years old (Mage = 74.88, SD = 6.75) was selected. Multiple stepwise regression analysis was used to assess the impact of health impairment and perceived social support on life satisfaction. Moderation analysis was performed using the bias-corrected and accelerated bootstrapping approach. RESULTS Significant differences in life satisfaction scores were found by number and type of disease, restrictions in daily life activities and subjective health. Perceived health and perceived social support predicted life satisfaction. Besides global social support, emotional and affectionate support moderated the link between perceived health and life satisfaction. CONCLUSIONS Older people who do not rate their health status positively and indicate low levels of social support have a higher risk of being dissatisfied with their lives and due to this they should receive special attention from gerontologists.
