Abstract
This study aims to investigate the molecular mechanism of tanshinone Ⅱ_(A )(TaⅡ_A) combined with endothelial progenitor cells-derived exosomes(EPCs-exos) in protecting the aortic vascular endothelial cells(AVECs) from oxidative damage via the phosphatidylinositol 3 kinase(PI3K)/protein kinase B(Akt) pathway. The AVECs induced by 1-palmitoyl-2-(5'-oxovaleroyl)-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine(POVPC) were randomly divided into model, TaⅡ_A, EPCs-exos, and TaⅡ_A+EPCs-exos groups, and the normal cells were taken as the control group. The cell counting kit-8(CCK-8) was used to examine the cell proliferation. The lactate dehydrogenase(LDH) cytotoxicity assay kit, Matrigel assay, DCFH-DA fluorescent probe, and laser confocal microscopy were employed to examine the LDH release, tube-forming ability, cellular reactive oxygen species(ROS) level, and endothelial cell skeleton morphology, respectively. The enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was employed to measure the expression of interleukin(IL)-1β, IL-6, and tumor necrosis factor(TNF)-α. Real-time fluorescence quantitative PCR(qRT-PCR) and Western blot were employed to determine the mRNA and protein levels, respectively, of PI3K and Akt. Compared with the control group, the model group showed decreased cell proliferation and tube-forming ability, increased LDH release, elevated ROS level, obvious cytoskeletal disruption, increased expression of IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α, and down-regulated mRNA and protein levels of PI3K and Akt. Compared with the model group, TaⅡ_A or EPCs-exos alone increased the cell proliferation and tube-forming ability, reduced LDH release, lowered the ROS level, repaired the damaged skeleton, decreased the expression of IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α, and up-regulated the mRNA and protein levels of PI3K and Akt. TaⅡ_A+EPCs-exos outperformed TaⅡ_A or EPCs-exos alone in regulating the above indexes. The results demonstrated that TaⅡ_A and EPCs-exos exerted a protective effect on POVPC-induced AVECs by activating the PI3K/Akt pathway, and the combination of the two had stronger therapeutic effect.

Abstract
This paper aims to investigate the effects and mechanisms of adipose-derived stem cells-exosomes(ADSCs-exos) toge-ther with aucubin in protecting human-derived nucleus pulposus cells(NPCs) from inflammatory injury, senescence, and apoptosis. The tert-butyl hydroperoxide(TBHP)-induced NPCs were assigned into normal, model, aucubin, ADSCs-exos, and aucubin+ADSCs-exos groups. The cell viability was examined by cell counting kit-8(CCK-8), cell proliferation by EdU staining, cell senescence by senescence-associated-β-galactosidase(SA-β-Gal), and cell cycle and apoptosis by flow cytometry. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was employed to examine the expression of interleukin-1β(IL-1β), IL-10, and tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α). Real-time fluorescence quantitative PCR and Western blot were employed to determine the mRNA and protein levels of aggregated proteoglycan(aggrecan), type Ⅱ collagen alpha 1(COL2A1), Toll-like receptor 4(TLR4), and nuclear factor-kappa B(NF-κB). The results showed that compared with the model group, the aucubin or ADSCs-exos group showed enhanced viability and proliferation of NPCs, decreased proportion of G_0/G_1 phase cells, increased proportion of S phase cells, reduced apoptosis and proportion of cells in senescence, lowered IL-1β and TNF-α levels, elevated IL-10 level, down-regulated mRNA and protein levels of TLR4 and NF-κB, and up-regulated mRNA and protein levels of aggrecan and COL2A1. Compared with the aucubin or ADSCs-exos group, the aucubin+ADSCs-exos combination further increased the viability and proliferation of NPCs, decreased the proportion of G_0/G_1 phase cells, increased the proportion of S phase cells, reduced the apoptosis and proportion of cells in senescence, lowered the IL-1β and TNF-α levels, elevated the IL-10 level, down-regulated the mRNA and protein levels of TLR4 and NF-κB, and up-regulated the mRNA and protein levels of aggrecan and COL2A1. In summary, both aucubin and ADSCs-exos could exert protective effects by inhibiting inflammatory responses, reducing apoptosis and senescence of NPCs, improving cell viability and proliferation as well as extracellular matrix synthesis, which may be associated with the inhibition of TLR4/NF-κB signaling pathway activation. The combination of both plays a synergistic role in the protective effects.

Abstract
In re-cent 20 years, the development of cell biology technology has promoted the research of keloid. Keloid fibroblasts (KFbs) are the main effector cells in keloid, which are closely related to the occurrence and development of keloid. It is significantly different in terms of biological characteristics and gene expression between KFbs and normal fibroblasts. This articles reviews the characteristics of KFbs from multiple perspectives, describing its biological character- istics in details including microstructures, metabolic character- istics, and proliferation properties, and introducing the main characteristics of heterogeneity and genomics of KFbs. The further research on KFbs will help to elucidate the pathogenesis of keloids and provide valuable strategies for the prevention and treatment of keloids.

Abstract
The existence of garbage codes in death cause surveillance data sets could influence the accuracy of the death cause statistics, and subsequently affect the precision and effectiveness of public health policy making. International and domestic researchers have studied the characteristics of garbage codes in various death cause data sets from different countries or regions in the world. They proposed several approaches for redistributing garbage codes, such as expert consultancy, fixed proportional reassignment, using the information about death cause chain, building statistical models, and so on. This paper summarizes and compares the principles, applications and limitation of application scenarios of currently common methods for garbage code redistribution in order to provide some references for improving the accuracy and usefulness of the death cause data in China.

Abstract
Hair-fin anchovy (Setipinna tenuifilis) is an economically important fish distributed in the West Indian Ocean and the Northwest Pacific Ocean. In this study, 154 individuals in eight populations of S. tenuifilis were sequenced and 850 million raw reads were obtained using restriction site-associated DNA sequencing (RAD-seq). First, we identified 14 012 044 hypothetical SNP markers. A dataset of 199 903 high-quality SNPs was collected after further screening. These SNPs have a strong ability to test the genetic diversity between the eight populations. The differentiation and genetic law between samples were explored based on SNPs in populations of S. tenuifilis. The results of this study will provide data for protecting the genetic resources of the species.

Abstract
This study explores attitudes and motivations towards volunteering in nursing students in Ghana compared with nursing students in the United Kingdom (UK). Ghana traditionally follows a western model of nurse education, with students studying programmes commensurate in theory and practice, making Ghana a suitable location for a comparative study. We explored similarities and differences in attitudes and motivation towards volunteering to challenge and inform our common place practice towards nursing pedagogy. Ghanaian students displayed positive attitudes towards volunteering, although these did not translate into increased motivation to volunteer while at university. Students reported financial constraints as reasons for not volunteering as did UK students, although Ghanaian students used available resources for daily living expenses, whereas UK students prioritised available resources to pay down student debt. Structured volunteering was absent from both Ghanaian and UK nursing programmes, despite its potential to increase the variety of social groups or situations to which students are exposed, to increase self-confidence and to encourage greater reflection on practice through doing. Structural challenges within countries may provide a better explanation of variation in student motivation towards volunteering, than cross-cultural variation in attitudes towards volunteering between countries.

Abstract
Objective: To explore the effect of different types of visual display terminals (VDT) on visual fatigue. Methods: A total of 68 subjects were enrolled and divided into flat screen group, metal screen group and glass bead screen group. The subjects watched a video in the same environment for 60 minutes. Before and after watching, they were asked to fill in a visual fatigue rating scale and underwent visual function examinations. The blink rate of subjects was recorded during the experiment. Results: After watching the video, for the metal screen, glass bead screen, and flat screen group respectively: (1)The median (interquartile range, IQR) of visual fatigue rating increased significantly (before: 1.0 (1.2), 1.3 (1.6), 0.5 (0.9); after: 2.1 (1.9), 2.1 (1.7), 1.2 (1.0); Z=-4.72, -4.83, -3.75; all P<0.05). (2) The median (IQR) of blink frequency increased significantly (before: 11.5 (10.6), 15.3 (11.9), 7.0 (13.0) times/minute; after: 15.0 (13.0), 17.0 (16.0), 15.0 (12.0) times/minute; Z=-2.64, -2.74, -4.12; all P<0.05). (3) The mean (±standard deviation) of critical flicker fusion frequency (CFF) decreased significantly [before: (35.76±2.98), (35.84±2.79), (35.44±2.21) Hz; after: (35.09±2.78), (34.94±2.67), (34.57±2.33) Hz; t=-2.64, -2.38, -4.12; all P<0.05). (4)The median (IQR) of near point of convergence (NPC) became significantly larger [before: 3.9 (2.6), 4.0 (2.5), 4.3 (2.7) cm; after 5.4 (3.8), 4.8 (2.7), 6.1 (3.9) cm; Z=-3.39, -2.27, -3.36; all P<0.05]. (5)The median of negative relative accommodation (NRA) reduced significantly [before: 2.00 (0.50), 2.00 (0.56), 2.00 (0.25) cm; after 1.75 (0.50), 1.75 (0.25), 1.75 (0.50) cm; Z=-1.98, -2.09, -2.53; all P<0.05]. Meanwhile, no significant changes were found for the positive relative accommodation (PRA), accommodative amplitude, accommodative response, negative relative vergence in all groups after watching the video. The comparisons between the three groups showed that, after watching the video, the participants in the two kinds of projection screen group (the metal and glass bead screen group) had more subjective visual fatigue than those in the flat screen group respectively (Z=-2.09, -2.21; all P<0.05), while there was no significant difference in subjective visual fatigue between the two projection screen groups (P>0.05). In addition, positive fusional vergence recovery point and break point decreased after watching the video in the metal screen and glass bead screen group, respectively (t=4.15, 2.07; all P<0.05). However, no such change was found in the flat screen group. Conclusions: Short-term and long-distance VDT operations have significant effects on visual fatigue, which may be due to the decreased positive convergence ability. VDT operations over projection screens may result in more visual fatigue than LED flat panel display, while the effect of different projection screen types have insignificant influences on visual fatigue. Abstract
Objective: To investigate the percentage of myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSC) and T regulatory cells (Treg) in peripheral blood of nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC) patients undergoing concurrent chemoradiotherapy or radiotherapy alone. Methods: Sixty NPC patients who received radiotherapy or concurrent chemoradiotherapy from September 2012 to November 2015 and 20 healthy individuals were included in this study. For the patients, the blood samples were collected at four time points: pre-radiation (Pre-RT), reaching a dose of 40 Gy (RT-40 Gy), finishing radiation (RT-finish) and three months after finishing radiation (3m-post-RT). Flow cytometry was used to evaluate the percentage of Treg (CD4(+) CD25(+) CD127(low/-)) and MDSC (HLA-DR(-)CD11b(+) CD33(+) ) cells in peripheral blood. Results: Treg and MDSC cells were present in peripheral blood lymphocytes of healthy individuals as a percentage of (7.50±1.62)% and (1.08±0.48)%, respectively. The proportions of peripheral Treg cells in patients at Pre-RT, RT-40 Gy, RT-finish and 3m-post-RT time points were (8.42± 1.52)%, (9.10±1.57)%, (8.87±1.56)% and (7.31±1.43)%, respectively, showing a statistically significant difference between Pre-RT and the other groups (P<0.05). At Pre-RT point, the percentage of Treg cells in Stage Ⅲ-Ⅳ patients [(8.63±1.39)%] was higher than that in Stage Ⅰ-Ⅱ [(7.65±1.94)%, P=0.042]. Moreover, the proportions of peripheral MDSC cells in patients at Pre-RT, RT-40 Gy, RT-finish and 3m-post-RT time points were (2.14±1.21)%, (4.08±1.90)%, (3.76±1.31)% and (1.52±0.88)%, respectively. The percentages of MDSC cells at RT-40 Gy and RT-finish points were significantly higher than those at Pre-RT, while the percentage of MDSC cells at 3m-post-RT was significantly lower than those at Pre-RT (P<0.05). At Pre-RT point, the percentage of MDSC cells in Stage Ⅲ-Ⅳ patients [(2.25±1.26)%] was higher than that in Stage Ⅰ-Ⅱ [(1.35±0.66)%, P=0.007]. At RT-finish point, the proportions of MDSC and Treg cells in patients with Ⅲ-Ⅳ grade of radiation induced oral mucositis [(4.41±1.27)% and (9.91±1.23)%] were significantly higher than those in Ⅰ-Ⅱ grade patients [(3.15±1.04)% and (8.41±1.52)%, both of P<0.05]. Conclusions: The proportions of MDSC and Treg cells in initial treated NPC patients are higher than healthy individuals, and they are also associated with the tumor stages. During the concurrent chemoradiotherapy and radiation, the percentage of MDSC and Treg cells is elevated, suggesting a decreased immune activity. The increase of MDSC and Treg cells is related to radiation induced oral mucositis.

Abstract
Objective:The aim of this study is to investigate the expression of MMP1 and prognosis in patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC), and to identify the potential mechanism of MMP1 in HNSCC. Method:The RNA sequencing data and related clinical data of HNSCC were downloaded from the TCGA public database. The MMP1 gene expression data and corresponding clinical information in the samples were retrospectively analyzed; The data of gene microarray were used to verify the correlation between MMP1 gene and HNSCC. The disease free survival and overall survival of HNSCC were also analyzed; Gene set enrichment analysis was conducted to identify the potential mechanism of MMP1 in HNSCC. Result:Among the 332 HNSCC patients, the expression of MMP1 was significantly associated with lymphatic invasion and tumor grade (P<0.01). The higher the expression level of MMP1 was, the more susceptible the patient was to lymph node metastasis. The data confirmed that the expression of MMP1 in HNSCC was significantly higher than that in normal mucosa (P<0.05); HNSCC of patient in MMP1 high expression group proved to have worse disease free survival and overall survival than in MMP1 low expression group (P<0.05); Gene enrichment analysis indicates that the high expression of MMP1 gene might influence the biological process of tumor though epithelial mesenchymal transition, TGF-β signaling pathway, hypoxia, angiogenesis, Noth signaling pathway, and up-regulation of KRAS gene signaling pathway. Conclusion:The high expression of MMP1 was related with occurrence and development of HNSCC, which can be used as an independent risk factor and has a great clinical significance.

Abstract
Previous studies have observed functional deficits in primary visual cortex. With the development of functional magnetic resonance imaging and electrophysiological technique, the research of the striate, extra-striate cortex and higher-order cortical deficit underlying amblyopia reaches a new stage. The neural mechanisms of amblyopia show that anomalous responses exist throughout the visual processing hierarchy, including the functional and structural abnormalities. This review aims to summarize the current knowledge about structural and functional deficits of brain regions associated with amblyopia. (Chin J Ophthalmol, 2017, 53: 392-395).

Abstract
Neo-intima development and atherosclerosis limit the long-term use of vein grafts for revascularization of ischemic tissues. Recently, studies have confirmed that proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) plays an important role in cell proliferation. Our research confirmed that 28 days after vein transplantation, PCNA expression increases significantly. Using rabbits, rather than rodents, for a more representative model of human vein grafts, we aimed to establish a time course of changes in cell proliferation and apoptosis using morphometric and immunohistochemical analyses, western blot, terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The external jugular veins of 42 healthy purebred male New Zealand white rabbits were grafted onto their common carotid arteries. The rabbits were divided into seven groups, with vein grafts being harvested before surgery, and at 1, 3, 7, 14, 28, and 90 days afterwards. The extent of stenosis and apoptosis, PCNA protein levels, and TEM morphology were subsequently examined. Intimal thickness was slightly decreased 1 day following surgery, but then increased continuously until the 90th day. Western blot and immunohistochemistry both indicated lowered PCNA expression on day 1, although levels subsequently increased, peaking at 7 days post-surgery. After surgery, apoptosis was lowest on day 7, and remained low thereafter. TEM revealed signs of apoptosis as vein graft restenosis progressed. Proliferation and apoptosis co-occurred following grafting, indicating that both processes were involved in vein graft remodeling. Apoptosis levels were highest between days 1 and 3 after surgery, whereas proliferation culminated on the 7th day.

Abstract
Advancements in micro-/nano-technology have led to the development of micro-manipulators. However, some challenges remain; for instance, the efficiency, precision and flexibility of micro-manipulators restrain their applications. This paper proposes a bio-tweezer system to flexibly manipulate micro-objects with bio-actuation via local light-induced high-concentration microorganisms in two different manipulation modes: light-spot induced mode and geometric shape-induced mode. Depending on the shape of micro-objects, either 2-dimensional translation or 1-dimensional rotation can be achieved. Based on the Langevin equation, a mathematical model considering both hydrodynamics and mimicked Brownian motion is proposed to analyze the bio-manipulation performance of the microorganisms; the model was validated by experiments to translate micro-particles in a two-dimensional plane and to rotate a micro-gear structure around its axis. This paper will aid in the development of micro-manipulators and the quantitative understanding of micro-/nano-manipulation actuated by microorganisms.

Abstract
5-Aminolevulinate synthase 1 (ALAS1) is the first enzyme in the heme biosynthetic pathway and is upregulated in follicular tissue during the early stages of ovulation. In this study, we isolated the complete coding sequence of the porcine ALAS1 gene and its 2-9 intron sequence, identified a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP; T/C) in intron 9, and developed a PCR-MspI-restriction fragment length polymorphism genotyping assay. Association of the SNP with litter size was assessed in two populations [purebred Large White and the experimental synthetic (DIV) line]. Statistical analysis demonstrated that for total number of piglets born (TNB) in all parities, pigs with the CC genotype had an additional 0.68 and 0.74 piglets compared to the TC and TT animals (P < 0.05) in the DIV line, respectively. Purebred Large White sows inheriting the CC and TC genotypes gave birth to an additional 0.96 and 0.70 piglets compared to the TT animals (P < 0.05) in all parities, respectively. In addition, for TNB in all parities, a significant additive effect of 0.48 ± 0.23 and 0.37 ± 0.17 piglets/ litter was detected in sows of both populations (P < 0.05), respectively. The highest levels of ALAS1 gene expression were observed in isolated ovarian granulosa cells 2 and 12 h after stimulation with pregnant mare serum gonadotropin human chorionic gonadotropin, which represents the time of follicular development and ovulation, respectively. Therefore, the ALAS1 gene was significantly associated with litter size in two populations and could be a useful molecular marker for the selection of increasing litter size in pigs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Amblyopic deficits in the primary and secondary visual cortex have been demonstrated broadly. However, the cognitive process at late stage originating in higher brain area in amblyopes hasn't been studied yet. The aim of this study was to investigate the late cognitive process at the frontal lobe in anisometropic amblyopes of a distinct degree, using visual event-related potential (ERP) techniques. METHODS Thirteen severe anisometropic amblyopes, 14 mild-to-moderate anisometropic amblyopes, and 13 control subjects participated in this study. Oddball paradigm (three stimuli: target, novel, and non-target stimuli) of low spatial frequency (1 cycle per degree, CPD) was used to elicit brain ERP waves. Reaction time, accuracy, latency, and amplitude of P3a waves evoked by novel stimuli at Fz electrode (the central electrode at frontal lobe), were analyzed statistically. RESULTS Neither accuracy nor reaction time showed significant difference among the three groups. The latency of N200 wave showed no significant difference. The latency of P3a wave was delayed in the amblyopes compared with healthy controls, but there was no significant difference between severe and mild-to-moderate amblyopes. P3a amplitude in mild-to-moderate amblyopes was significantly higher than in controls and severe amblyopes. CONCLUSIONS Our findings indicated that the cognitive process in anisometropic amblyopes was impaired, and the compensative effect of P3a amplitude was shown in mild-to-moderate amblyopes. P3a visual ERP could become a useful tool to investigate cognitive processing in amblyopes. Hippokratia 2016, 20(1): 60-66.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study is to investigate bone mineral density (BMD) for a large cross-section of midlife Arab women living in Qatar and to evaluate the association of body mass index (BMI), menopause status, and nationality, on BMD of the spine and femur. STUDY DESIGN A cross-sectional study was conducted among women aged 40-60 years recruited from nine primary-care health centers in Qatar. BMD (g/m(2)) was assessed at the lumbar spine and the femur. RESULTS The combined prevalence of osteopenia and osteoporosis was 4% at the femur and 16.2% at the spine. BMI and menstrual status were both independently associated with BMD at the spine and at the femur (all p values < 0.001). As BMI increased, BMD increased at both the spine and femur. Women who menstruated in the past 12 months had 0.82 g/cm(2) and 0.61 g/cm(2) greater BMD at the spine and femur, respectively, compared with women who had not menstruated in 12 months. Nationality was not associated with mean BMD of the spine or the femur. CONCLUSIONS No significant differences were observed between Qatari and non-Qatari women in terms of mean BMD values at the spine and the femur except for the femur in the age group 55-60, where values were lower among non-Qataris (p = 0.04). Multivariable analyses showed that BMI and menstrual status were found to be strongly associated with BMD levels at the spine and femur. The high prevalence of obesity observed in this sample may explain the low levels of osteopenia and osteoporosis observed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress plays a key role in cell apoptosis pathways. Caspase-12, a proapoptotic gene induced by ER stress, is also the key molecule in ER-related apoptosis. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the protective activity and possible mechanism of resveratrol (ResV) against ethanol (EtOH)-induced apoptosis in human hepatocyte Chang cell line. METHODS The human hepatocyte Chang cell line was used to test the hypothesis that ResV may alleviate the liver cell apoptosis induced by EtOH. ER stress-inducible proteins and silent mating type information regulation 2 homolog 1 (SIRT1) were assayed by Western blot. Cell viability was studied by MTT assay and apoptosis was measured by Annexin-V and propidium iodide assay. Caspase-12 activation was examined by immunofluorescence staining. Alcohol dehydrogenase-2 (ADH-2) and aldehyde dehydrogenase-2 (ALDH-2) were measured by polymerase chain reaction amplified product length polymorphism. Phosphodiesterase (PDE) activity was assayed in cell lysates using a cyclic nucleotide PDE assay. RESULTS EtOH exposure significantly increased the expression of ER stress markers and activated signaling pathways associated with ER stress. These include GRP78, p-IRE1α, p-eIF2α, p-PERK, ATF4 as well as cleaved caspase-3/12, CHOP/GADD153, and Bax in human hepatocyte Chang cell line. The expression of these proteins were significantly down-regulated by ResV (10 μM) in a SIRT1-dependent manner. ResV can inhibit EtOH-, tunicamycin-, thapsigargin-induced caspase-12 activation. ADH-2 and ALDH-2 activities are lower in this cell line. PDE activity increased by EtOH was inhibited by ResV (10 μM). CONCLUSIONS The results indicate that (i) EtOH-induced activation of caspase-12 could be one of the underlying mechanisms of hepatocyte apoptosis; (ii) EtOH-induced cell apoptosis was alleviated via ResV (10 μM) by inhibiting ER stress and caspase-12 activation in a SIRT1-dependent manner; and (iii) SIRT1 activated indirectly by ResV (10 μM) attenuates EtOH-induced hepatocyte apoptosis partly through inhibiting PDE activity.

Abstract
Octopus in the family Octopodidae (Mollusca: Cephalopoda) has been generally recognized as a "catch-all" genus. The monophyly of octopus species in China's coastal waters has not yet been studied. In this paper, we inferred the phylogeny of 11 octopus species (family Octopodidae) in China's coastal waters using nucleotide sequences of two mitochondrial DNA genes: cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) and 16S rRNA. Sequence analysis of both genes revealed that the 11 species of Octopodidae fell into four distinct groups, which were genetically distant from one another and exhibited identical phylogenetic resolution. The phylogenies indicated strongly that the genus Octopus in China's coastal waters is also not monophyletic, and it is therefore clear that the Octopodidae systematics in this area requires major revision. It is demonstrated that partial sequence information of both the mitochondrial genes 16S rRNA and COI could be used as diagnostic molecular markers in the identification and resolution of the taxonomic ambiguity of Octopodidae species.

Abstract
A family of bismuth ferrites (BFO), including Bi2Fe4O9, BiFeO3, and Bi25FeO39 with different morphologies, has been prepared by the hydrothermal method assisted by different alkaline mineralizers. X-ray diffraction refinement calculations are carried out to study the crystal structures of bismuth ferrites. A thermodynamic calculation based on the dissolution-precipitation model was carried out to analyze the hydrothermal synthesis of BFO powders. Magnetic measurements of the obtained bismuth ferrites show different magnetic properties from 5 K to 350 K.

Abstract
We discuss recent highlights from research at Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, regarding the use of spin-transfer torques to control magnetic moments in nanoscale ferromagnetic devices. We highlight progress on reducing the critical currents necessary to produce spin-torque-driven magnetic switching, quantitative measurements of the magnitude and direction of the spin torque in magnetic tunnel junctions, and single-shot measurements of the magnetic dynamics generated during thermally assisted spin-torque switching.

Abstract
17beta-Hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 1 (HSD17B1) is a key enzyme of 17beta-estradiol biosynthesis, which might play an important role in follicular development of the ovary. In this study, we isolated the complete coding sequence of porcine HSD17B1 gene and its unique intron sequences of porcine HSD17B1 gene, identified a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP: A/C) in intron 4, and developed a PCR-MvaI-RFLP genotyping assay. Association of the SNP and litter size was assessed in two populations (purebred Large White and a experimental synthetic Line (DIV) sows). Statistical analysis demonstrated that, in the first parity, AC animals in experimental synthetic Line (DIV) sows had 0.52 more piglets born compared to the CC animals (P<0.05). In the all parities, pigs with the AA genotype had an additional 1.11 and 0.96 piglets born alive compared to the CC animals (P<0.05) in both experimental synthetic Line (DIV) and purebred Large White, respectively. Experimental synthetic Line (DIV) sows inheriting the AC genotype had additional 0.84 piglets born alive compared to the CC animals (P<0.01) in all parities. In addition, significant additive effect of -0.55+/-0.24 piglets/litter and -0.48+/-0.22 piglets/litter on piglet born alive was detected in both experimental synthetic Line (DIV) sows and purebred Large White lines (P<0.05), respectively. Therefore, HSD17B1 gene was significantly associated with litter size in two populations and could be a useful molecular marker in selection for increasing litter size in pigs.

Abstract
A study of using dual membrane technologies, microfiltration (MF) and reverse osmosis (RO), for reclaiming blowdown of the cooling tower was conducted at ZJK power plant, Hebei province, China. The study shows that the combined MF-RO system can effectively reduce water consumption in the power industry. The results indicate that MF process is capable of producing a filtrate suitable for RO treatment and achieving a silt density index (SDI) less than 2, turbidity of 0.2 NTU. The water quality of RO effluent is very good with an average conductivity of about 40 micros/cm and rejection of 98%. The product water is suitable for injection into the cooling tower to counteract with cooling water intrusion. After adopting this system, water-saving effectiveness as expressed in terms of cycles of concentration could be increased from 2.5-2.8 times to 5 times.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate the effects of intrauterine human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) infection on pregnancy outcomes and infant development. METHODS The study group consisted of the HCMV-IgM-positive offspring of 75 pregnant women, and a control group of the non-infected offspring of 73 pregnant women. Chorionic villi, amnionic fluid, and umbilical blood were obtained to detect HCMV-late mRNA with a reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) assay. The pregnancy outcomes were followed up. For all offspring, neurological development was evaluated with neurosonography, audiologic development with the brainstem auditory evoked potential (BAEP), and psychomotor development with the Beyley Scale of Infant Development (BSID). RESULTS In the study group the positive rate of late mRNA was 50% in the chorionic villi and 67.65% in the amnionic fluid and the umbilical blood; the incidence of abnormal pregnancy outcomes (abortion, preterm delivery, stillbirth, etc.) was much higher than in the control group (40% vs. 6.57%; chi(2)=24.06; P=0.001); the abnormal rate of neurosonography results at birth and 3 months after birth was higher in the study group than in the control group (P<0.05), as were BAEP values 4 months after birth (chi(2)=8.960; P=0.003). Scores for the Infant Mental Development Index (MDI) were apparently lower than in the control group. When congenitally infected children were tested at the age of 5.5-6.5 years with the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence (WPPSI), their rate of mental retardation was still found to be approximately 20%. CONCLUSIONS Intrauterine HCMV infection is closely related to abnormal pregnancy outcomes, infant neurological damage, mental retardation, and hearing loss.

Abstract
The retinoblastoma suppressor (Rb)-associated protein 46 (RbAp46) is a nuclear protein of the WD-repeat protein family and a component of the histone deacetylase complex that physically interacts with Rb. We demonstrated that RbAp46 is a gene up-regulated by the Wilms' tumor suppressor (WT1) and functions as a negative regulator of cell growth. Here we have investigated the ability of RbAp46 to inhibit malignant phenotype of adenovirus-transformed human embryonic kidney (HEK) 293 cells in tumorigenesis assays. We have found that expression of RbAp46 suppressed clonal growth of HEK 293 cells in soft agar and inhibited tumor growth of these cells in nude mice. Furthermore, expression of RbAp46 resulted in an increase of cells in the G2/M fraction of cell cycle and augmented apoptosis in serum-starved cells. The results suggest that high levels of RbAp46 expression inhibit the transformation of tumor cells through interfering with normal cell cycle and/or enhancing apoptotic cell death.

Abstract
As reported previously, AML1-ETO knock-in mice were generated to investigate the role of AML1-ETO in leukemogenesis and to mimic the progression of t(8;21) leukemia. These knock-in mice died in midgestation because of hemorrhaging in the central nervous system and a block of definitive hematopoiesis during embryogenesis. Therefore, they are not a good model system for the development of acute myeloid leukemia. Therefore, mice were generated in which the expression of AML1-ETO is under the control of a tetracycline-inducible system. Multiple lines of transgenic mice have been produced with the AML1-ETO complementary DNA controlled by a tetracycline-responsive element. In the absence of the antibiotic tetracycline, AML1-ETO is strongly expressed in the bone marrow of AML1-ETO and tet-controlled transcriptional activator double-positive transgenic mice. Furthermore, the addition of tetracycline reduces AML1-ETO expression in double-positive mice to nondetectable levels. Throughout the normal murine lifespan of 24 months, mice expressing AML1-ETO have not developed leukemia. In spite of this, abnormal maturation and proliferation of progenitor cells have been observed from these animals. These results demonstrate that AML1-ETO has a very restricted capacity to transform cells. Either the introduction of additional genetic changes or the expression of AML1-ETO at a particular stage of hematopoietic cell differentiation will be necessary to develop a model for studying the pathogenesis of t(8;21).

Abstract
The ubiquitin-specific proteases (UBP) are a family of enzymes that cleave ubiquitin from ubiquitinated protein substrates. We have recently cloned UBP43, a novel member of this family from AML1-ETO knock-in mice. To analyze the role of UBP43 in hematopoiesis and leukemogenesis, we have cloned a full-length human UBP43 cDNA by screening a human monocytic cDNA library as well as by 5'- and 3'-rapid amplification of cDNA ends analyses. This cDNA encodes a polypeptide of 372 amino acids with all of the structural motifs of a deubiquitinating enzyme. The human UBP43 mRNA is strongly expressed in human liver and thymus. Transfection analysis has demonstrated that UBP43 is a nuclear protein. Interestingly, the gene encoding human UBP43 maps to chromosome 22q11.2. This region, known as DiGeorge syndrome critical region, contains a minimal area of 2 Mb and is consistently deleted in DiGeorge syndrome and related disorders. The syndrome is marked by thymic aplasia or hypoplasia, parathyroid hypoplasia, or congenital cardiac abnormalities. Taken together, our results broaden the understanding of a new human ubiquitin-specific protease, UBP43, and suggest that this gene may also be related to DiGeorge syndrome.

Abstract
Using PCR-coupled subtractive screening-representational difference analysis, we have cloned a novel gene from AML1-ETO knockin mice. This gene is highly expressed in the yolk sac and fetal liver of the knockin mice. Nucleotide sequence analysis indicates that its cDNA contains an 1,107-bp open reading frame encoding a 368-amino-acid polypeptide. Further protein sequence and protein translation analysis shows that it belongs to a family of ubiquitin-specific proteases (UBP), and its molecular mass is 43 kDa. Therefore, we have named this gene UBP43. Like other ubiquitin proteases, the UBP43 protein has deubiquitinating enzyme activity. Protein ubiquitination has been implicated in many important cellular events. In wild-type adult mice, UBP43 is highly expressed in the thymus and in peritoneal macrophages. Among nine different murine hematopoietic cell lines analyzed, UBP43 expression is detectable only in cell lines related to the monocytic lineage. Furthermore, its expression is regulated during cytokine-induced monocytic cell differentiation. We have investigated its function in the hematopoietic myeloid cell line M1. UBP43 was introduced into M1 cells by retroviral gene transfer, and several high-expressing UBP43 clones were obtained for further study. Morphologic and cell surface marker examination of UBP43/M1 cells reveals that overexpression of UBP43 blocks cytokine-induced terminal differentiation of monocytic cells. These data suggest that UBP43 plays an important role in hematopoiesis by modulating either the ubiquitin-dependent proteolytic pathway or the ubiquitination state of another regulatory factor(s) during myeloid cell differentiation.

Abstract
Phytoestrogens are a group of naturally occurring diphenolic compounds present in legumes, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. High consumption of phytoestrogen-rich foods has been linked to a reduced incidence of cancers at many sites. A potential mechanism of dietary anticarcinogenesis involves the induction of detoxifying phase II enzymes such as NADPH:quinone reductase (QR). This study, therefore, examined the ability of six prominent phytoestrogens to affect cellular expression of QR in colonic cells. Colo205 cells were cocultured with various concentrations (0.001 to 10.0 microM) of each phytoestrogen, and then were assessed for cytosolic QR activity, cell growth, and QR mRNA expression. A maximum of 6- to 8-fold induction of QR activity was observed for both enterolactone and genistein, although at high concentrations they showed an adverse effect upon cell growth. The concentrations required to double the specific activity of QR for enterolactone and genistein were about 0.04 and 0.14 microM, respectively. A 2- to 3-fold increase of QR specific activity was found with either biochanin A (1.1 microM) or coumestrol (12.0 microM) treatments. No significant effects were found for daidzein or formononetin treatments. QR induction was further confirmed by using reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) techniques to measure mRNA expression. A significant correlation between the expression of QR mRNA and the corresponding QR activity was observed (r = 0.76, P < 0.001). The results demonstrated that certain dietary phytoestrogens are capable of QR induction in Colo205 cells by promoting QR mRNA expression, and suggest a novel mechanism by which dietary phytoestrogens may be implicated in colorectal cancer chemoprevention.

Abstract
The number of bleomycin-induced chromosomal breaks in cultured peripheral blood lymphocytes has been proposed as a measure of the sensitivity of an individual to carcinogens. Although "mutagen sensitivity" (clastogenicity) may be a useful biomarker for the identification of individuals at high risk for DNA damage, there is some uncertainty whether the results of this assay can be modified by environmental factors, such as diet. We designed an intervention study to determine whether micronutrient supplementation with beta-carotene and alpha-tocopherol influenced the mutagenicity score among 22 healthy volunteers. This intervention study followed a double-blind, randomized, cross-over design. Chromatid breaks ranged from 0.30 to 2.30 per cell and were uncorrelated with plasma beta-carotene (r = -0.07; P = 0.50) and a-tocopherol (r = -0.01; P = 0.92) levels, after accounting for the time of the measurement. The average number of breaks per cell was similar (P for difference in means = 0.90) among subjects during periods of vitamin supplementation (mean = 0.87 breaks per cell) and placebo (mean = 0.86 breaks per cell), averaged over groups and after adjustment for baseline breaks. Substantial within-person variation may indicate some imprecision in the mutagen sensitivity assessment. Our results suggest that mutagen sensitivity is not affected by plasma levels of beta-carotene or alpha-tocopherol. Although mutagen sensitivity does not appear to be modified by changes in plasma levels of two common antioxidant vitamins, it may be useful for the identification of high-risk individuals for participation in large intervention studies with cancer outcomes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To develop and test a quantitative food frequency method for administration by telephone. DESIGN A comparison study of telephone and face-to-face interviews was conducted among a representative sample of the five major ethnic groups in Oahu, Hawaii. Two interviews were administered 4 to 6 months apart by trained interviewers using identical questionnaires and color photographs of food items showing three different portion sizes. The order of the interviewing methods was randomly assigned. The questionnaire included 115 food items selected to estimate 80% or more of usual dietary intakes. Frequencies and quantities of each item consumed during the past year were obtained. SUBJECTS/SETTING Subjects were recruited from the Health Surveillance Program of the Hawaii State Department of Health and consisted of 167 men and 158 women, aged 45 to 74 years, who provided a telephone number. Eighty percent of the face-to-face interviews were conducted in the subjects' homes and 20% were conducted at the workplace or the University of Hawaii Cancer Research Center, if requested. STATISTICAL ANALYSES The paired t test was used to compare the mean daily intakes obtained by the telephone and face-to-face methods. Agreement was measured by the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), Pearson correlation coefficient and weighted kappa statistic. RESULTS The means of energy and each nutrient were slightly higher in the first interview than the second, regardless of the interviewing method. Because of close correspondence among all 3 statistical measures of agreement, only the ICCs are reported. The ICCs ranged from .61 for protein and vitamin A to .69 for dietary cholesterol among men, and from .61 for vitamin C to .74 for saturated fat among women. Agreement was not significantly affected by age, gender, ethnicity, order of interview, or educational level. APPLICATIONS Telephone interviews to obtain quantitative food frequencies are cost-efficient methods for estimating usual dietary intakes among persons in widely scattered geographic areas. Photographs of the foods in 3 portion sizes mailed in advance help the respondents estimate amounts eaten.

Abstract
Endometrial cancer is associated with increased weight and body size, diabetes, and other conditions that may result from an excess in calories or lack of physical activity. Although a few studies have explored the effect of dietary constituents on the risk of endometrial cancer, the nature of the joint association of these constituents and obesity, energy intake, or energy expenditure with risk is unknown. A population-based case-control study was conducted in Hawaii to examine the association of diet, body size, and physical activity with the risk of endometrial cancer. Subjects included 332 histologically confirmed, primary endometrial cancer cases and 511 controls identified between 1985 and 1993. Cases and controls were residents of Oahu, Hawaii who were between 18 and 84 years of age and were from one of the following ethnic groups: Japanese, Caucasian, Native Hawaiian, Filipino, and Chinese. Cases were identified through the Hawaii Tumor Registry and matched to the controls on age (+/-2.5 years) and ethnicity. In-person interviews, conducted in the subjects' homes, included dietary, reproductive, menstrual, and medical histories and use of exogenous hormones, physical activity, and other lifestyle variables. Weight, girth, and skinfold measurements were taken at the time of the interview. We found a strong dose-response relation of increased body size to the development of endometrial cancer after adjustment for energy intake. The odds ratio (OR) for endometrial cancer among women in the highest quartile of body mass index (BMI; kg/m2) was more than four times that among women in the lowest quartile. Waist, hip, midarm, and wrist girths were positively associated with the estimated risk of endometrial cancer after adjustment for total calories and other nondietary risk factors, although the trends in the ORs were attenuated after adjustment for BMI. Physically active women had a modest reduction in their risk of disease compared with inactive women. Cases consumed a greater percentage of their calories from fat and a lower percentage of their calories from carbohydrates than did controls. Adjustment for BMI reduced the ORs for the highest compared with the lowest quartile of fat calorie intake from 2.0 (95% confidence interval, 1.3-3.2) to 1.6 (95% confidence interval, 1.0-2.6), suggesting that part of the association is explained by obesity. There was a differential effect of fat on endometrial cancer according to BMI. For all components of fat, the associations with endometrial cancer were either minimal or absent among leaner women (i.e., those with BMI below the median), whereas, among more obese women, two-fold differences in risk were observed between women above and below the median of fat intake. Foods that are high in fat and cholesterol, such as red meat, margarine, and eggs, were positively associated with endometrial cancer, whereas cereals, legumes, vegetables, and fruits, particularly those high in lutein, were inversely associated. These findings suggest that women who avoid being overweight and who consume a diet low in plant and animal fats and high in complex carbohydrates are at a reduced risk of endometrial cancer.

Abstract
Polyamines are short-chain aliphatic amines required for normal cellular growth that are ubiquitously found in all living tissues. Polyamine content has been shown to correlate with cellular proliferation. Quantitation of polyamines may thus provide a biochemical measure of proliferation in the colorectal mucosa where dysregulated epithelial proliferation is associated with colorectal cancer risk. A case-control study was conducted to validate the hypothesized association between mucosal polyamine measurements and colorectal cancer risk. Polyamines were measured in 4-6 multiple rectal mucosal biopsies from 11 normal control subjects and seven case patients with colon cancer. Compared with the controls, mean polyamine measurements, after adjustment for age and sex, were significantly increased for spermidine (P < 0.003) and spermine (P < 0.017). Subsequent analysis indicated that in controls 1-4 biopsies appeared adequate to characterize an individual. However, mucosal polyamines in the cases exhibited more sampling variability, requiring 4-8 biopsies to achieve an acceptable level of reliability. After adjustment for age and sex, the odds ratios for spermidine and spermine levels, compared to the controls, were 4.8 (95% confidence interval: 1.6-33.7) and 2.3 (1.2-6.3), respectively. The results of this study indicate that increases of mucosal polyamine measurements, after taking the sampling and methodological variability into account, are significantly associated with colorectal cancer risk, and suggest that polyamine measurements in rectal mucosa may play an important role as biomarkers for identifying high-risk individuals and/or for using as intermediate endpoints in prevention trials.

Abstract
Changes in unloaded maximum shortening velocity (Vmax) and myosin isoenzymes (MI) composition of rat left ventricular muscle were examined in the 8-week or 16-week Goldblatt hypertensive (H8, H16) and hypertension-regressive rats (R8). The Vmax was estimated by extrapolation to zero afterload from the tension-velocity curve of left ventricular papillary muscle, while the MI composition (V1, V2 and V3) was separated by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and determined by densitometry. The results showed that: (1) A slow age-dependent shift to V3 and a decrease in Vmax were observed in 16- and 24-week-old rats (S8, S16), in which V1/V3 ratio was decreased respectively by 38.9% and 61.0% and Vmax was decreased respectively by 8.3% and 13.3% when compared with that of the 8-week-old rats (S0). (2) There was a significant decrease in V1/V3 ratio and Vmax in 8-week (H8) and 16-week (H16) hypertension induced hypertrophic left ventricular muscle as evidenced by the fact that the V1/V3 ratio decreased by 84.4% and 93.5% and Vmax decreased by 33.3% and 48.3% in H8 and H16 as compared with that of the control rats (S0). (3) There was a partial recovery in Vmax and V1/V3 ratio in (R8) group rats. (4) The Vmax was positively correlated with the level of V1 (r = 0.9215, P < 0.01) and negatively with the level of V3 (r = 0.9071, P < 0.01) as analyzed in all the six experimental groups of a total of 48 rats (S0, S8, S16, H8, H16, R8). In conclusion, a significant shift of the myosin isoenzymes towards low ATPase activity V3 might be the biochemical mechanism responsible, at least in part, for the decrease in maximum shortening velocity in the hypertrophic left ventricular muscle induced by pressure overload.

Abstract
Erythrocyte polyamine measurements have been previously investigated as candidate biomarkers for hyperproliferation and recently as a potential intermediate endpoint in clinical chemoprevention trials with difluoromethylornithine, an inhibitor of polyamine biosynthesis. This study was performed to determine the reproducibility of erythrocyte polyamine measurements and their possible correlation with plasma micronutrients in seven healthy adults in an antioxidant vitamin intervention study. As part of this cross-over intervention study, three subjects took beta-carotene (31.4 mg/day) plus D-alpha-tocopherol acetate (720 IU/day) supplements during the first 3 months and four subjects took the supplements during the second 3 months. Heparinized blood samples were collected at baseline and every month over total 6 months for simultaneous determination of erythrocyte polyamines and plasma micronutrients by the high-performance liquid chromatographic method. For all the measures of erythrocyte polyamines the intraindividual variation was smaller than that between subjects, and three or four measurements required to accurately characterize long-term erythrocyte polyamines for an individual. The intra-class correlations were moderately high for all erythrocyte polyamine measurements, indicating a good reproducibility for intra-individual erythrocyte polyamine measurements. Based on monthly values, significant inverse correlations were found between erythrocyte spermidine and the plasma levels of retinol (r = -0.50) and lutein (r = -0.52). There were also significant inverse associations between erythrocyte spermine and plasma levels of alpha-tocopherol (r = -0.29), lutein (r = -0.44), lycopene (r = -0.29), beta-cryptoxanthin (r = -0.30), and total carotenoids (r = -0.29). The effects of supplementation upon the associations between erythrocyte polyamines and plasma nutrient levels were additionally addressed. The results indicate an acceptable longitudinal reproducibility of erythrocyte polyamine measurements, support the hypothesis that erythrocyte polyamine measurements may be correlated with plasma levels of certain nutrients, and suggest a further biomarker application in cancer prevention trials involving dietary modifications or specific relevant micronutrients.
