Abstract
The purpose was to compare the effects of diet and exercise and laser interference and maneuver on anthropometric parameters and blood effects of object agents. The study was a randomized controlled longitudinal study. It included 45 adolescents from both sexes who were divided randomly into two groups: one group was treated with low calorie diet and exercise as group A and group B was treated with low calorie diet, exercise, and laser acupuncture. All parameters and blood samples were done before and after the interventions. Group A showed a highly significant reduction post intervention in anthropometric parameters: triceps skin fold thickness (SFT), biceps SFT, subscapular SFT, suprailiac SFT, abdominal SFT, mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC), waist C, and hip C, except for waste/hip (W/H) ratio which showed no significant difference, p > 0.05 and some lipid profiles (cholesterol, LDL) with p < 0.001 Whereas, a significant decrease in TG was observed (p < 0.05). On the other hand, a significant increase in HDL was observed (p < 0.05). Group B (LCD + exercise + LA) showed a highly significant reduction post intervention in anthropometric parameters: triceps SFT, biceps SFT, subscapular SFT, suprailiac SFT, abdominal SFT, MUAC, waist C, and Hip C, except for W/H ratio which showed no significant difference, p > 0.05 and lipid profile: cholesterol, LDL, and TG with (p < 0.001), whereas a highly significant increase in HDL was observed (p < 0.001). The current study revealed a significant difference between group A and group B regarding the percentage of change, where the highest values were found in group B compared to group A, in anthropometric parameters (weight, BMI, subscapular SFT, MUAC, waist circumference) and some lipid profiles (LDL and HDL) with p < 0.05. Laser acupuncture was a safe, easy, and more effective tool with extra effect in management of obesity when added to diet and exercise on anthropometric parameters and lipid profile.

Abstract
Large sample datasets of in situ evapotranspiration (ET) measurements with well documented data provenance and quality assurance are critical for water management and many fields of earth science research. We present a post-processed ET oriented dataset at daily and monthly timesteps, from 161 stations, including 148 eddy covariance flux towers, that were chosen based on their data quality from nearly 350 stations across the contiguous United States. In addition to ET, the data includes energy and heat fluxes, meteorological measurements, and reference ET downloaded from gridMET for each flux station. Data processing techniques were conducted in a reproducible manner using open-source software. Most data initially came from the public AmeriFlux network, however, several different networks (e.g., the USDA-Agricultural Research Service) and university partners provided data that was not yet public. Initial half-hourly energy balance data were gap-filled and aggregated to daily frequency, and turbulent fluxes were corrected for energy balance closure error using the FLUXNET2015/ONEFlux energy balance ratio approach. Metadata, diagnostics of energy balance, and interactive graphs of time series data are included for each station. Although the dataset was developed primarily to benchmark satellite-based remote sensing ET models of the OpenET initiative, there are many other potential uses, such as validation for a range of regional hydrologic and atmospheric models.

Abstract
To investigate microglial mechanisms in central and peripheral inflammation after experimental traumatic brain injury (TBI), we inhibited the colony-stimulating factor-1 receptor (CSF-1R) with PLX5622 (PLX). We hypothesized that microglia depletion would attenuate central inflammation acutely with no effect on peripheral inflammation. After randomization, male mice (n = 105) were fed PLX or control diets (21 days) and then received midline fluid percussion injury or sham injury. Brain and blood were collected at 1, 3, or 7 days post-injury (DPI). Immune cell populations were quantified in the brain and blood by flow cytometry. Cytokines (interleukin [IL]-6, IL-1β, tumor necrosis factor-α, interferon-γ, IL-17A, and IL-10) were quantified in the blood using a multi-plex enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Data were analyzed using Bayesian multi-variate, multi-level models. PLX depleted microglia at all time points and reduced neutrophils in the brain at 7 DPI. PLX also depleted CD115+ monocytes, reduced myeloid cells, neutrophils, and Ly6Clow monocytes in blood, and elevated IL-6. TBI induced a central and peripheral immune response. TBI elevated leukocytes, microglia, and macrophages in the brain and elevated peripheral myeloid cells, neutrophils, Ly6Cint monocytes, and IL-1β in the blood. TBI lowered peripheral CD115+ and Ly6Clow monocytes in the blood. TBI PLX mice had fewer leukocytes and microglia in the brain at 1 DPI, with elevated neutrophils at 7 DPI compared to TBI mice on a control diet. TBI PLX mice also had fewer peripheral myeloid cells, CD115+, and Ly6Clow monocytes in the blood at 3 DPI, but elevated Ly6Chigh, Ly6Cint, and CD115+ monocyte populations at 7 DPI, compared to TBI mice on a control diet. TBI PLX mice had elevated proinflammatory cytokines and lower anti-inflammatory cytokines in the blood at 7 DPI compared to TBI mice on a control diet. CSF-1R inhibition reduced the immune response to TBI at 1 and 3 DPI, but elevated peripheral inflammation at 7 DPI.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Prematurity is associated with lots of comorbidities. Premature neonates also have lower bone mineral content (BMC) compared to term neonates. Apnea of prematurity is a common complication and caffeine citrate is widely used for its prevention and treatment. Caffeine also affects creatinine clearance, urine flow rate and releases calcium from its storage sites. OBJECTIVES The primary objective was to assess BMC in preterm neonates treated with caffeine using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA). Secondary objectives were to determine whether caffeine therapy is associated with increased incidence of nephrocalcinosis or bone fracture. METHODS Prospective observational study on 42 preterm neonates, 34 weeks' gestation or less; 22 of them received intravenous caffeine (caffeine group) and 20 did not (control group). Serum levels of calcium, phosphorus, alkaline phosphatase, magnesium, sodium, potassium, and creatinine, abdominal ultrasonography, and DEXA scan were done for all included neonates. RESULTS BMC showed significant lower levels in the caffeine compared to control group (p = 0.017). Additionally, BMC was significantly lower in neonates who received caffeine for more than 14 days compared to those who received it for 14 days or less(p = 0.04). BMC showed significant positive correlation to birth weight, gestational age, serum P and significant negative correlation to serum ALP. Caffeine therapy duration was negatively correlated to BMC (r = -0.370, p = 0.000) and positively correlated to serum ALP levels (r = 0.667, p = 0.001). None of the neonates had nephrocalcinosis. CONCLUSIONS Caffeine administration for more than 14 days in preterm neonates may be associated with lower BMC but not nephrocalcinosis or bone fracture.

Abstract
Today, aging of the population is considered one of the most fundamental challenges worldwide. One of the important factors in active aging is paying attention to psychological variables and related factors. This study was conducted aimed to determine the relationship between self-esteem and subjective vitality of the older people in Iran, Sirjan in 2020. In this descriptive-analytical study, 200 older people aged 60 years and older were selected from comprehensive health centers in Sirjan by a two-stage random sampling method. The data were collected using the validated Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, and validated Subjective Vitality Scale. The data were analyzed using SPSS software version 20 using descriptive and inferential statistics, including the Mann-Whitney test, Kruskal-Wallis test, Post Hoc tests, and Spearman correlation coefficient. The mean age of the older people was 65,66±3,9 years. The the mean and standard deviation of self-esteem score was 36,34±4,62 and 21,80±2,85 for subjective vitality score. There was a positive and significant correlation between self-esteem and subjective vitality R=0,58 (p˂0,001 ). Also, gender, marital status and employment status were associated with subjective vitality (p˂0,05). Therefore, planners and policymakers should consider self-esteem and subjective vitality in designing and prioritizing interventions related to improving the health of the older people.

Abstract
There is an unmet clinical need for curative therapies to treat neurodegenerative disorders. Most mainstay treatments currently on the market only alleviate specific symptoms and do not reverse disease progression. The Pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide (PACAP), an endogenous neuropeptide hormone, has been extensively studied as a potential regenerative therapeutic. PACAP is widely distributed in the central nervous system (CNS) and exerts its neuroprotective and neurotrophic effects via the related Class B GPCRs PAC1, VPAC1, and VPAC2, at which the hormone shows roughly equal activity. Vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) also activates these receptors, and this close analogue of PACAP has also shown to promote neuronal survival in various animal models of acute and progressive neurodegenerative diseases. However, PACAP's poor pharmacokinetic profile (non-linear PK/PD), and more importantly its limited blood-brain barrier (BBB) permeability has hampered development of this peptide as a therapeutic. We have demonstrated that glycosylation of PACAP and related peptides promotes penetration of the BBB and improves PK properties while retaining efficacy and potency in the low nanomolar range at its target receptors. Furthermore, judicious structure-activity relationship (SAR) studies revealed key motifs that can be modulated to afford compounds with diverse selectivity profiles. Most importantly, we have demonstrated that select PACAP glycopeptide analogues (2LS80Mel and 2LS98Lac) exert potent neuroprotective effects and anti-inflammatory activity in animal models of traumatic brain injury and in a mild-toxin lesion model of Parkinson's disease, highlighting glycosylation as a viable strategy for converting endogenous peptides into robust and efficacious drug candidates.

Abstract
This study examined the association between life satisfaction and place attachment in the older adult. A total of 200 subjects of Kerman city, Iran, responded to questionnaires on life satisfaction and place attachment. The data were analyzed using chi-square, analysis of variance, correlation, and hierarchical multiple regression analysis by the SPSS software version 18. Approximately 51,4% of the subjects had intermediate life satisfaction. The Life satisfaction mean was significantly lower in subjects over 80 of the male gender, single marital status, with more than 3 chronic diseases and bad self-rated health. The majority of respondents had intermediate levels of place attachment (56,6%). There was a significant correlation between life satisfaction and place attachment. Independent variables accounted for 34,2% of the variance in life satisfaction. Individuals with higher attachment had higher levels of life satisfaction than those with lower place attachment. Place attachment is an appropriate strategy to increase life satisfaction in aging.

Abstract
Intimate partner violence (IPV) increases risk of traumatic brain injury (TBI). Physical assaults increase in frequency and intensity during pregnancy. The consequences of TBI during pregnancy (gravida TBI; gTBI) on offspring development is unknown, for which stress and inflammation during pregnancy worsen fetal developmental outcomes. We hypothesized that gTBI would lead to increased anxiety- and depression-related behavior, altered inflammatory responses and gut pathology, and distorted brain circuitry in mixed-sex offspring compared to mice born to control mothers. Pregnant dams received either diffuse TBI or sham injury (control) 12 days post-coitum. We found that male gTBI offspring were principal drivers of the gTBI effects on health, physiology, and behavior. For example, male, but not female, gTBI offspring weighed significantly less at weaning compared to male control offspring. At post-natal day (PND) 28, gTBI offspring had significantly weaker intralaminar connectivity onto layer 5 pre-frontal pyramidal neurons compared to control offspring. Neurological performance on anxiety-like behaviors was decreased, with only marginal differences in depressive-like behaviors, for gTBI offspring compared to control offspring. At PND42 and PND58, circulating neutrophil and monocyte populations were significantly smaller in gTBI male offspring than control male offspring. In response to a subsequent inflammatory challenge at PND75, gTBI offspring had significantly smaller circulating neutrophil populations than control offspring. Anxiety-like behaviors persisted during the immune challenge in gTBI offspring. However, spleen immune response and gut histology showed no significant differences between groups. The results compel further studies to determine the full extent of gTBI on fetal and maternal outcomes.

Abstract
Elderly populations (≥65 years old) have the highest risk of developing Alzheimer's disease (AD) and/or obtaining a traumatic brain injury (TBI). Using translational mouse models, we investigated sleep disturbances and inflammation associated with normal aging, TBI and aging, and AD. We hypothesized that aging results in marked changes in sleep compared with adult mice, and that TBI and aging would result in sleep and inflammation levels similar to AD mice. We used female 16-month-old wild-type (WT Aged) and 3xTg-AD mice, as well as a 2-month-old reference group (WT Adult), to evaluate sleep changes. WT Aged mice received diffuse TBI by midline fluid percussion, and blood was collected from both WT Aged (pre- and post-TBI) and 3xTg-AD mice to evaluate inflammation. Cognitive behavior was tested, and tissue was collected for histology. Bayesian generalized additive and mixed-effects models were used for analyses. Both normal aging and AD led to increases in sleep compared with adult mice. WT Aged mice with TBI slept substantially more, with fragmented shorter bouts, than they did pre-TBI and compared with AD mice. However, differences between WT Aged and 3xTg-AD mice in immune cell populations and plasma cytokine levels were incongruous, cognitive deficits were similar, and cumulative sleep was not predictive of inflammation or behavior for either group. Our results suggest that in similarly aged individuals, TBI immediately induces more profound sleep alterations than in AD, although both diseases likely include cognitive impairments. Unique pathological sleep pathways may exist in elderly individuals who incur TBI compared with similarly aged individuals who have AD, which may warrant disease-specific treatments in clinical settings.

Abstract
ABSTRACT Traumatic brain injury (TBI) can induce acute lung injury (ALI). The exact pathomechanism of TBI-induced ALI is poorly understood, limiting treatment options. Remote ischemic conditioning (RIC) can mitigate detrimental outcomes following transplants, cardiac arrests, and neurological injuries. In this study, we hypothesized that RIC would reduce TBI-induced ALI by regulating the sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P)-dependent pathway, a central regulator of endothelial barrier integrity, lymphocyte, and myokine trafficking. Male mice were subjected to either diffuse TBI by midline fluid percussion or control sham injury and randomly assigned among four groups: sham, TBI, sham RIC, or TBI RIC; RIC was performed 1 h prior to TBI. Mice were euthanized at 1-h postinjury or 7 days post-injury (DPI) and lung tissue, bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid, and blood were collected. Lung tissue was analyzed for histopathology, irisin myokine levels, and S1P receptor levels. BAL fluid and blood were analyzed for cellularity and myokine/S1P levels, respectively. One-hour postinjury, TBI damaged lung alveoli and increased neutrophil infiltration; RIC preserved alveoli. BAL from TBI mice had more neutrophils and higher neutrophil/monocyte ratios compared with sham, where TBI RIC mice showed no injury-induced change. Further, S1P receptor 3 and irisin-associated protein levels were significantly increased in the lungs of TBI mice compared with sham, which was prevented by RIC. However, there was no RIC-associated change in plasma irisin or S1P. At 7 DPI, ALI in TBI mice was largely resolved, with evidence for residual lung pathology. Thus, RIC may be a viable intervention for TBI-induced ALI to preserve lung function and facilitate clinical management.

Abstract
Remote ischemic conditioning (RIC), transient restriction and recirculation of blood flow to a limb after traumatic brain injury (TBI), can modify levels of pathology-associated circulating protein. This study sought to identify TBI-induced molecular alterations in plasma and whether RIC would modulate protein and metabolite levels at 24 h after diffuse TBI. Adult male C57BL/6 mice received diffuse TBI by midline fluid percussion or were sham-injured. Mice were assigned to treatment groups 1 h after recovery of righting reflex: sham, TBI, sham RIC, TBI RIC. Nine plasma metabolites were significantly lower post-TBI (six amino acids, two acylcarnitines, one carnosine). RIC intervention returned metabolites to sham levels. Using proteomics analysis, twenty-four putative protein markers for TBI and RIC were identified. After application of Benjamini–Hochberg correction, actin, alpha 1, skeletal muscle (ACTA1) was found to be significantly increased in TBI compared to both sham groups and TBI RIC. Thus, identified metabolites and proteins provide potential biomarkers for TBI and therapeutic RIC in order to monitor disease progression and therapeutic efficacy.

Abstract
Identifying differential responses between sexes following traumatic brain injury (TBI) can elucidate the mechanisms behind disease pathology. Peripheral and central inflammation in the pathophysiology of TBI can increase sleep in male rodents, but this remains untested in females. We hypothesized that diffuse TBI would increase inflammation and sleep in males more so than in females. Diffuse TBI was induced in C57BL/6J mice and serial blood samples were collected (baseline, 1, 5, 7 days post-injury [DPI]) to quantify peripheral immune cell populations and sleep regulatory cytokines. Brains and spleens were harvested at 7DPI to quantify central and peripheral immune cells, respectively. Mixed-effects regression models were used for data analysis. Female TBI mice had 77%-124% higher IL-6 levels than male TBI mice at 1 and 5DPI, whereas IL-1β and TNF-α levels were similar between sexes at all timepoints. Despite baseline sex differences in blood-measured Ly6Chigh monocytes (females had 40% more than males), TBI reduced monocytes by 67% in TBI mice at 1DPI. Male TBI mice had 31%-33% more blood-measured and 31% more spleen-measured Ly6G+ neutrophils than female TBI mice at 1 and 5DPI, and 7DPI, respectively. Compared with sham, TBI increased sleep in both sexes during the first light and dark cycles. Male TBI mice slept 11%-17% more than female TBI mice, depending on the cycle. Thus, sex and TBI interactions may alter the peripheral inflammation profile and sleep patterns, which might explain discrepancies in disease progression based on sex.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Egypt is among the world top 10 countries in diabetes prevalence. It is the first country among the MENA region. Healthy lifestyle education and support help people with diabetes to improve health outcomes. Many physical and psychological barriers can hinder patients from following a healthy lifestyle. AIM This study aimed to examine the effect of lifestyle modification educational sessions in helping Egyptian patients to overcome main barriers of diabetes self-management through improving nutritional behaviours, physical activity, medication compliance, and blood glucose monitoring. METHODS A cohort study included 205 patients with type 2 diabetes. Baseline assessment of patients' lifestyle behaviours and barriers using personal diabetes questionnaire of Louisville University, with both anthropometric and blood glucose assessment. Interventional lifestyle health education was provided weekly through multiple integrated techniques, followed by a post-intervention assessment to evaluate the effect of the health education sessions. Statistical analysis was done to identify any statistically significant difference before and after the health education intervention. RESULTS There was a significant improvement of the post-education mean scores of the studied behaviours when compared with the pre-education scores of the participants' behaviours (p < 0.001). There was also a significant reduction in the barriers facing patients to diabetes self-management including nutritional barriers (P < 0.001), medication compliance barriers (P < 0.001) with a percent change (43%), physical activity barriers (p < 0.001), and blood glucose monitoring (p < 0.001) with a percent change (44%).There was a statistically significant positive correlation between improvement of medication compliance (P = 0.027), blood glucose monitoring(P = 0.045), and glycated haemoglobin of the study participants. CONCLUSION lifestyle modification education of type 2 diabetic patients can overcome the main barriers of following a healthy lifestyle and improve their anthropometric measures and blood glucose level.

Abstract
Tonsillotomy (tonsillar ablation) using diode laser and radiofrequency has been introduced for management of tonsillar hypertrophy as it is associated with fewer hazards to deep structures. We compared tissue volume and histological changes in the tonsils following radiofrequency tonsillotomy versus diode laser tonsillotomy in tonsillar hypertrophy. 40 tonsils excised from 20 patients were included in this study. Twenty tonsils were subjected to radiofrequency tonsillotomy (RFT) group 1, and the other 20 tonsils were subjected to diode laser 980 nm tonsillotomy (DLT) group 2. Both procedures were followed by cold dissection tonsillectomy for macroscopic and histological examination of tonsils. Tonsillar volume reduction was evident in both groups with a non-significant difference between groups. Histological changes were evident in both groups. In our study, both radiofrequency and diode laser were effective in tonsillar ablation in terms of volume reduction and keeping the histological pattern intact.

Abstract
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is one of the leading causes of death and disability worldwide, and has emerged as a critical risk factor for multiple neurodegenerative diseases, particularly Alzheimer's disease (AD). How the inflammatory cascade resulting from mechanical stress, axonal shearing and the loss of neurons and glia following initial impact in TBI, contributes to the development of AD-like disease is unclear. Neuroinflammation, characterized by blood-brain barrier (BBB) dysfunction and activation of brain-resident microglia and astrocytes, resulting in secretion of inflammatory mediators and subsequent recruitment of peripheral immune cells has been the focus of extensive research in attempts to identify drug-targets towards improving functional outcomes post TBI. While knowledge of intricate cellular interactions that shape lesion pathophysiology is incomplete, a major limitation in the field is the lack of understanding of how distinct cell types differentially alter TBI pathology. The aim of this review is to highlight functional differences between populations of bone marrow derived, infiltrating monocytes/macrophages and brain-resident microglia based on differential expression of the chemokine receptors CCR2 and CX3CR1. This review will focus on how unique subsets of mononuclear phagocytes shape TBI pathophysiology, neurotoxicity and BBB function, in a disease-stage dependent manner. Additionally, this review summarizes the role of multiple microglia and macrophage receptors, namely CCR2, CX3CR1 and Triggering Receptor Expressed on Myeloid Cells-2 (TREM2) in pathological neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration vs. recovery following TBI. TREM2 has been implicated in mediating AD-related pathology, and variants in TREM2 are particularly important due to their correlation with exacerbated neurodegeneration. Finally, this review highlights behavioral outcomes associated with microglial vs. macrophage variances, the need for novel treatment strategies that target unique subpopulations of peripheral macrophages, and the importance of development of therapeutics to modulate inflammatory functions of brain-resident microglia at specific stages of TBI.

Abstract
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) induces widespread neuroinflammation and accumulation of microtubule associated protein tau (MAPT): two key pathological features of tauopathies. This study sought to characterize the microglial/macrophage response to TBI in genomic-based MAPT transgenic mice in a Mapt knockout background (called hTau). Two-month-old hTau and age-matched control male and female mice received a single lateral fluid percussion TBI or sham injury. Separate groups of mice were aged to an acute (3 days post-injury [DPI]) or chronic (135 DPI) post-injury time point. As judged by tissue immunostaining for macrophage markers, microglial/macrophage response to TBI was enhanced at 3 DPI in hTau mice compared with control TBI and sham mice. However, MAPT phosphorylation increased in hTau mice regardless of injury group. Flow cytometric analysis revealed distinct populations of microglia and macrophages within all groups at 135 DPI. Unexpectedly, microglial reactivity was significantly reduced in hTau TBI mice compared with all other groups. Instead, hTau TBI mice showed a persistent macrophage response. In addition, TBI enhanced MAPT pathology in the temporal cortex and hippocampus of hTau TBI mice compared with controls 135 DPI. A battery of behavioral tests revealed that TBI in hTau mice resulted in compromised use of spatial search strategies to complete a water maze task, despite lack of motor or visual deficits. Collectively, these data indicate that the presence of wild-type human tau alters the microglial/macrophage response to a single TBI, induces delayed, region-specific MAPT pathology, and alters cognitive recovery; however, the causal relationship between these events remains unclear. These results highlight the potential significance of communication between MAPT and microglia/macrophages following TBI, and emphasize the role of neuroinflammation in post-injury recovery.

Abstract
Toxoplasma gondii infection is concerned to have an association with epilepsy and depression either as a cause or a potential risk factor for their occurrence. Nevertheless, there has been long-standing interest in investigating this possible association, the evidence for such relationship is yet not conclusive. The current study correlated between T. gondii infection and Neuropsychiatric disorders: epilepsy and depression, through serological valuation of anti-Toxoplasma immunoglobulin (Ig) G antibodies. In the current study, 112 patients suffered from epilepsy (72 cryptogenic and 40 non-cryptogenic), 118 had depression and 60 healthy volunteers that had no history of any neuropsychiatric disorders in their first degree relatives were enrolled. Full history taking, complete physical examination, cranial magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), scalp electroencephalography (EEG), a structured questionnaire and T. gondii specific IgG antibody ELISA were performed to all groups. The results showed that the anti-Toxoplasma IgG antibodies were detected among cases with cryptogenic epilepsy 34.7% (25 out of 72 cases), non-cryptogenic epilepsy 2.5% (1 out of 40) and depression 20.3% (24 out of 118) groups compared to healthy. control group (11.7%). There were significant associations between T. gondii seropositivity of epilepsy and depression groups in age, residence, contact with pets and social class compared to control healthy group (p<0.05). Youth and adults had the highest sero-T. gondii infection especially male in rural areas with low social class.

Abstract
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) affects 1.7 million persons annually in the United States (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). There is increasing evidence that persons exposed to TBI have increased risk of the development of multiple neurodegenerative conditions, including Alzheimer disease (AD). TBI triggers a strong neuroinflammatory response characterized by astrogliosis, activation of microglia, and infiltration of peripheral monocytes. Recent evidence suggests that alterations in innate immunity promote neurodegeneration. This includes genetic studies demonstrating that mutations in triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells 2 (TREM2) is associated with a higher risk for not only AD but also multiple neurodegenerative diseases. To examine whether TREM2 deficiency affects pathological outcomes of TBI, Trem2 knockout (Trem2-/-) and C57BL/6J (B6) mice were given a lateral fluid percussion injury (FPI) and sacrificed at 3 and 120 days post-injury (DPI) to look at both acute and chronic consequences of TREM2 deficiency. Notably, at 3 DPI, B6 mice exposed to TBI exhibited increased expression of TREM2 in the brain. Further, Trem2-/- mice exposed to TBI exhibited enhanced macrophage activation near the lesion, but significantly less macrophage activation away from the lesion when compared with B6 mice exposed to TBI. In addition, at 120 DPI, Trem2-/- mice exposed to TBI demonstrated reduced hippocampal atrophy and rescue of TBI-induced behavioral changes when compared with B6 mice exposed to TBI. Taken together, this study suggests that TREM2 deficiency influences both acute and chronic responses to TBI, leading to an altered macrophage response at early time points, and improved pathological and functional outcomes at later time points.

Abstract
The appropriate use of biological agents and chemical compounds is necessary to establish successful integrated pest management (IPM) programs. Thus, the off-target effects of pesticides on biological control agents are essential considerations of IPM. In this study, the effects of lethal and sublethal concentrations of chlorpyrifos and spinosad on the demographic parameters of Habrobracon hebetor (Say) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) were assessed. Bioassays were carried out on immature and adult stages by using dipping and contact exposure of dry pesticide residue on an inert material, respectively. The lethal concentration (LC)50 values of chlorpyrifos and spinosad were 3.69 and 151.37 ppm, respectively, on the larval stage and 1.75 and 117.37 ppm, respectively, on adults. Hazard quotient (HQ) values for chlorpyrifos and spinosad were 400 and 2.2, respectively, on the larval stage and 857.14 and 2.84, respectively, on adults. A low lethal concentration (LC30) was used to assess the sublethal effects of both pesticides on the surviving females. In each treatment, 25 survivors were randomly selected and transferred into 6-cm Petri dishes. Adults were provided daily with last instars of Anagasta kuehniella (Zeller) as a host until all of the females died. The number of eggs laid, percent of larvae hatched, longevity, and sex ratio were recorded. Stable population growth parameters were estimated by the Jackknife method. In control, chlorpyrifos, and spinosad treatments, the intrinsic rates of increase (r m) values were 0.23, 0.10, and 0.21, respectively. The results of this study suggest a relative compatibility between spinosad use and H. hebetor. Finally, further studies should be conducted under natural conditions to verify the compatibility of spinosad with H. hebetor in IPM programs.

Abstract
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) has acute and chronic sequelae, including an increased risk for the development of Alzheimer's disease (AD). TBI-associated neuroinflammation is characterized by activation of brain-resident microglia and infiltration of monocytes; however, recent studies have implicated beta-amyloid as a major manipulator of the inflammatory response. To examine neuroinflammation after TBI and development of AD-like features, these studies examined the effects of TBI in the presence and absence of beta-amyloid. The R1.40 mouse model of cerebral amyloidosis was used, with a focus on time points well before robust AD pathologies. Unexpectedly, in R1.40 mice, the acute neuroinflammatory response to TBI was strikingly muted, with reduced numbers of CNS myeloid cells acquiring a macrophage phenotype and decreased expression of inflammatory cytokines. At chronic time points, macrophage activation substantially declined in non-Tg TBI mice; however, it was relatively unchanged in R1.40 TBI mice. The persistent inflammatory response coincided with significant tissue loss between 3 and 120 days post-injury in R1.40 TBI mice, which was not observed in non-Tg TBI mice. Surprisingly, inflammatory cytokine expression was enhanced in R1.40 mice compared with non-Tg mice, regardless of injury group. Although R1.40 TBI mice demonstrated task-specific deficits in cognition, overall functional recovery was similar to non-Tg TBI mice. These findings suggest that accumulating beta-amyloid leads to an altered post-injury macrophage response at acute and chronic time points. Together, these studies emphasize the role of post-injury neuroinflammation in regulating long-term sequelae after TBI and also support recent studies implicating beta-amyloid as an immunomodulator.

Abstract
AIM The aim of this study was to determine systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) survival in adult patients and its predictors in Iran. METHODS The adult patients diagnosed with SLE and admitted to our referral general hospital from 1992 to 2011 were studied. Demographic, clinical and laboratory data at the time of diagnosis were obtained retrospectively and analyzed. Survival rates were calculated by the Kaplan-Meier method. Predictors of mortality were assessed by Cox regression analysis. RESULTS In total, 417 were enrolled in the study; 23 were lost to follow-up. Mean (SD) age of SLE onset was 30 (9.7) years. During the study period 35 patients (8.9%) died. The most common causes of death were active SLE (43%), infections (28.6%) and circulatory diseases (20%). Overall survival rates after 5, 10, 15 and 20 years were 93%, 90%, 90% and 80%, respectively. Poor survival predictors in univariate analysis were pericarditis, seizure and hematuria. With multivariate Cox regression analysis, no pericarditis (p = 0.007, HR = 0.22, 95%CI: 0.075-0.657) and no seizure (p = 0.019, HR = 0.35, 95%CI: 0.149-0.846) at the time of SLE diagnosis were found as protective factors in patients' survival. CONCLUSION Our study revealed that the survival rate of SLE is comparable with the acceptable worldwide trend. Presenting with pericarditis and seizure at the time of SLE diagnosis prominently decreased the survival rate. Prospective and multicenter studies are needed to better identify the behavior of SLE in Iran.

Abstract
The egg parasitoid, Trichogramma brassicae Bezdenko (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) is the most important and widely distributed species of Trichogramma in Iran. It attacks eggs of several lepidopterous pests, and is a major biological control agent. Rearing parasitoids is necessary for experimental work, and, potentially, for mass release in the field. Selecting a suitable host is critical for developing a successful rearing method. If other conditions are the same, the rate of population increase will be a suitable indicator of parasitoid performance on different hosts. However, conclusions based on a single generation can be misleading because of the learning ability of parasitoids. Life history parameters of T. brassicae were studied on two hosts easily reared in the laboratory, Anagasta kuehniella Zeller, and Plodia interpunctella Hübner (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae). All the experiments were carried out at 24 +/- 1 degrees C, 65+/-10% RH, and 16:8 L:D photoperiod. Eight parameters including gross and net reproductive rates (GRR and R(0) respectively), intrinsic rate of natural increase (r(m)), finite rate of population increase (lambda), intrinsic birth and death rates (b and d respectively), cohort generation time (T), and doubling time (DT) were compared between two hosts for two generations. All parameters showed a highly significant difference (alpha = 0.01) between hosts. GRR, R(0), r(m), lambda, and b were higher, while d, T, and DT were lower in Anagasta than Plodia. The intrinsic rate of natural increase was 0.2912 and 0.2145 female/female/day and net replacement rate was 45.51 and 19.26 female/female/generation in Anagasta and Plodia respectively. Differences between generations were significant except for r(m), lambda, and d. The net replacement rate was 28.56 and 39 in the 1(st) and 2(nd) generations respectively. These results showed that A. kuehniella was a better host than P. interpunctella. Higher reproduction occurred in the second generation that may be due to increased adaptation to experimental conditions.

Abstract
Sleep bruxism (SB) subjects show a higher incidence of rhythmic masticatory muscle activity (RMMA) than control subjects. RMMA is associated with sleep micro-arousals. This study aims to: (i) assess RMMA/SB episodes in relation to sleep cycles; (ii) establish if RMMA/SB and micro-arousals occur in relation to the slow wave activity (SWA) dynamics; (iii) analyze the association between RMMA/SB and autonomic cardiac activity across sleep cycles. Two nights of polygraphic recordings were made in three study groups (20 subjects each): moderate to high SB, low SB and control. RMMA episodes were considered to occur in clusters when several groups of RMMA or non-specific oromotor episodes were separated by less than 100 s. Correlations between sleep, RMMA/SB index and heart rate variability variables were assessed for the first four sleep cycles of each study group. Statistical analyses were done with SYSTAT and SPSS. It was observed that 75.8% of all RMMA/SB episodes occurred in clusters. Micro-arousal and SB indexes were highest during sleep cycles 2 and 3 (P < 0.001). Within each cycle, micro-arousal and RMMA/SB indexes showed an increase before each REM sleep (P <or= 0.02). The cross-correlation plot for micro-arousal index showed positive association from 4 min preceding SB onset in the moderate to high SB subjects (P <or= 0.06). The cross-correlation plot revealed that SWA decreases following SB onset (P <or= 0.05). Further cross-correlation analysis revealed that a shift in sympatho-vagal balance towards increased sympathetic activity started 8 min preceding SB onset (P <or= 0.03). In moderate to severe SB subjects, a clear increase in sympathetic activity precedes SB onset.

Abstract
Intracardiac haemangioma is a very rare primary benign tumour. A 20 year old female patient, with no significant previous medical history, presented to the emergency department with cardiovascular collapse and vague abdominal pains, with no peripheral signs of cardiac failure. The electrocardiogram showed sinus rhythm with diffuse reploarisation disturbances. Chest radiography revealed cardiomegaly (cardiothoracic index of 0.67) with a right paracardial opacity. Abdominal ultrasound showed a moderate peritoneal effusion and transthoracic ultrasound showed a tumour occupying the right atrial cavity but sparing the interatrial septum. The patient underwent emergency open heart surgery for tumour resection and right atrial wall repair with autologous pericardium. Histology confirmed a haemangioma. Follow-up at one month was uneventful. The clinical, diagnostic and therapeutic features of this case are underlined.

Abstract
ESTs constitute rapid and informative tools with which to study gene-expression profiles of the diverse stages of the schistosome life cycle. Following a comprehensive EST study of adult worms, analysis has now targeted the cercaria, the parasite larval form responsible for infection of the vertebrate host. Two Schistosoma mansoni cercarial cDNA libraries were examined and partial sequence obtained from 957 randomly selected clones. On the basis of database searches, 551 (57.6%) ESTs generated had no homologs in the public databases whilst 308 (32.2%) were putatively identified, totaling 859 informative ESTs. The remaining 98 (10.2%) were uninformative ESTs (ribosomal RNA and non-coding mitochondrial sequences). By clustering analysis we have identified 453 different genes. The most common sequences in both libraries represented Sm8 calcium binding protein (8% of ESTs), fructose-1,6-bisphosphate aldolase, glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase, cytochrome oxidase subunit 1, ATP guanidine kinase and triose phosphate isomerase. One hundred and nineteen identified genes were sorted into 11 functional categories, with genes associated with energy metabolism being the most abundant (13%) and diverse. The diversity and abundance of genes associated with the transcription/translation machinery and with regulatory/signaling functions were also marked. A paramyosin transcript was identified, indicating that this gene is not exclusively expressed in adult worms and sporocysts (as had been suggested previously). The possible physiological relevance to cercariae of the presence of transcripts with homology to calcium binding proteins of the EF-hand superfamily, Gq-coupled rhodopsin photoreceptor, rod phosphodiesterase 8 subunit and peripheral-type benzodiazepine receptor is discussed.

Abstract
A comparative study of the gene expression profile in different developmental stages of Schistosoma mansoni has been initiated based on the expressed sequence tag (EST) approach. A total of 1401 ESTs were generated from seven different cDNA libraries constructed from four distinct stages of the parasite life cycle. The libraries were first evaluated for their quality for a large-scale cDNA sequencing program. Most of them were shown to have less than 20% useless clones and more than 50% new genes. The redundancy of each library was also analyzed, showing that one adult worm cDNA library was composed of a small number of highly frequent genes. When comparing ESTs from distinct libraries, we could detect that most genes were present only in a single library, but others were expressed in more than one developmental stage and may represent housekeeping genes in the parasite. When considering only once the genes present in more than one library, a total of 466 unique genes were obtained, corresponding to 427 new S. mansoni genes. From the total of unique genes, 20.2% were identified based on homology with genes from other organisms, 8.3% matched S. mansoni characterized genes and 71.5% represent unknown genes.

Abstract
This study examines the relative importance of risk factors for viral hepatitis C infection and estimates the magnitude of HCV problem among Egyptians. It is a continuation of a recently performed cross-sectional study conducted on more than 5000 Egyptians. Serum samples (1945) were analyzed for liver enzymes (SGPT and SGOT) to evaluate the status of liver affection. One hundred and sixty nine samples (103 confirmed HCV seropositives and 66 seronegative) were analyzed for PCR HCV RNA to estimate the frequency of HCV viraemia among those individuals. Rates for HCV seropositivity by ELISA test in mass screening were corrected using predictive value of a positive test at prevalence between 5-50%. Attributable risk and population attributable risk estimates were calculated for those significant factors in logistic regression analysis. Overall number of HCV infected individuals was estimated for age groups of 15-65 years and the numbers of HCV related liver complications were estimated. HCV PCR RNA was positive for 50% of ELISA-seropositive samples and for 13.8% of the seronegative samples. However, only 5% of those individuals with HCV seropositivity and 3.7% of those with PCR RNA positivity Showed SGPT serum levels above 1.5 normal. The overall age, sex and urban/rural adjusted rate of true HCV seropositivity is estimated to be 15.6% among working Egyptians between 15-65 years. Attributable risk due to injections for the treatment of bilharziasis is estimated to be 47% (95% CL = 38%-55%) among exposed males. Blood transfusion was estimated to be responsible for 87% (95% CL = 57%-96%) of cases among previously transfused females. Population attributable risk for injections for treatment of bilharziasis among working urban and rural males is estimated to be 15% and 11% respectively. Blood transfusion and sharing contaminated needles contributed by 24% of cases (for each) among working urban females. Previous hospitalization contributed by 36% of cases among working rural females and by 10% among working urban males. As for the national estimate of cases of HCV seropositivity we estimated more than 5 million individuals with an expected number of chronic hepatitis of varying degrees of 3.5 millions. HCV viraemia with high probability for transmission is present in more than 50% of those individuals and liver cirrhosis cases expected to develop within an average of 20 years of infection are in the range of 350-700 thousand cases. The major proportions of population attributable risk are due to other undefined risk factors associated with age, male sex, living in rural areas and in lower and upper Egypt. Further research is needed to elucidate those factors prevailing in these areas, associated with increased risk of HCV infection.
