Abstract
Periodontal treatment is quickly moving towards a philosophy consisting of a less invasive approach. In this context, minimally invasive nonsurgical therapy (MINST) is a promising option. This paper reviews the concepts behind minimal invasiveness in nonsurgical periodontology and reports the state-of the art evidence for this topic. Instruments used and protocols suggested for these applications are introduced and discussed. The original papers reviewed show probing pocket depth (PPD) reductions and clinical attachment level (CAL) gains ranging from 2 to 4 mm between baseline and 6 months to 5 years posttreatment for intrabony defects and from 1.5 to 3 mm between baseline and 2-6 months of follow-up for full-mouth results. These clinical outcomes are accompanied by statistically significant reductions in radiographic bone defect depth and increases in intrabony defect angles posttreatment. Wound healing mechanisms following MINST are presented, and clinical applications and directions for future research are suggested.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cellular cementum, a mineralized tissue covering apical tooth roots, grows by apposition to maintain the tooth in its occlusal position. We hypothesized that resident cementocytes would show morphological changes in response to cementum apposition, possibly implicating a role in cementum biology. METHODS Mandibular first molars were induced to super-erupt (EIA) by extraction of maxillary molars, promoting rapid new cementum formation. Tissue and cell responses were analyzed at 6 and/or 21 days post-procedure (dpp). RESULTS High-resolution micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) and confocal laser scanning microscopy showed increased cellular cementum by 21 dpp. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealed that cementocytes under EIA were 50% larger than control cells, supported by larger pore sizes detected by micro-CT. Cementocytes under EIA displayed ultrastructural changes consistent with increased activity, including increased cytoplasm and nuclear size. We applied EIA to Hyp mutant mice, where cementocytes have perilacunar hypomineralization defects, to test cell and tissue responses in an altered mechanoresponsive milieu. Hyp and WT molars displayed similar super-eruption, with Hyp molars exhibiting 28% increased cellular cementum area versus 22% in WT mice at 21 dpp. Compared to control, Hyp cementocytes featured well-defined, disperse euchromatin and a thick layer of peripherally condensed heterochromatin in nuclei, indicating cellular activity. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) for cementum markers revealed intense dentin matrix protein-1 expression and abnormal osteopontin deposition in Hyp mice. Both WT and Hyp cementocytes expressed gap junction protein, connexin 43. CONCLUSION This study provides new insights into the EIA model and cementocyte activity in association with new cementum formation.

Abstract
This randomized controlled trial assessed the impact of crestal level position of implants installed in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients rehabilitated with overdentures. Twenty-two mandibular edentulous T2DM patients were submitted to implant placement for retention of an overdenture. By means of a split-mouth design, two implants were installed: one at supracrestal level (SL) and one at crestal level (CL). Clinical, immunoenzymatic and tomographic analyses were performed at prosthesis placement (baseline) and after 6, 12 and 24 months following implant loading. Increased peri-implant probing depths were detected in CL implants when compared with SL implants at all time-points (baseline P=0.047; 6 months P=0.014; 12 months P=0.027; 24 months P=0.036). Indeed, augmented clinical attachment levels were also detected in CL implants when compared with SL implants at all time-points (baseline P=003; 6 months P=0.045; 12 months P=0.029; 24 months P=0.026). CL implants demonstrated increased amounts of interleukin-6 (IL-6) at 6 months (P=0.043) and higher IL-17 (P=0.021), IL-21 (P=0.034) and tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) concentrations (P=0.030) at 24 months in comparison with SL implants. CL group revealed enhanced bone loss from baseline to 6 (P=0.032), 12 (P=0.043) and 24 months (P=0.028) when compared with SL. In conclusion, this study showed that implants placed supracrestally in T2DM patients rehabilitated with overdentures demonstrated lower bone loss and better clinical parameters with beneficial modulation of peri-implant immunoinflammatory biomarkers when compared with implants positioned at crestal level.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Periodontal disease and diabetes mellitus (DM) are highly prevalent and interrelated diseases, resulting in altered host response microbiota. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the impact of DM on local levels of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and lipoteichoic acid (LTA) and their relationship with cytokines and matrix metalloproteinases' (MMPs) profile. METHODS This case-control study included diabetic (n = 15) and non-diabetic (n = 15) subjects presenting Stage 3-4, Grade C, Periodontitis. Gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) was collected, and LPS and LTA levels were analyzed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), while IFN-γ, IL-10, IL-17, IL-1β, IL-4, MMP-2, and MMP-9 were measured by LUMINEX/MAGpix. Mann-Whitney and Spearman's correlation tests were used to compared and to correlate variables (p < 0.05). RESULTS Higher levels of LTA, LPS, IL-10, IL-1β, and MMP-2 (p < 0.05) and lower levels of IL-17 were found in the DM group (p < 0.05). Non-diabetic subjects presented higher LPS, IFN-γ, IL-17, and MMP-2 levels and lower IL-10 concentration (p < 0.05). No significant correlation was seen between LPS and cytokine profile in non-diabetic. Local levels of LTA were positively correlated with IL-17 and MMP-2 and negatively with IL-10. CONCLUSION LTA and LPS drove the inflammatory profile through the modulation of cytokines and MMPs in a different manner in DM and non-diabetic subjects.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The present investigation studied the effects of systemic administration of resveratrol (RSV) on the development of experimental periodontitis (EP) and on the release of markers of inflammation, bone metabolism, and oxidative stress in diabetic rats. METHODS Seventy-five male rats were divided into five groups: DM+PLAC: Diabetes Mellitus + placebo solution; DM+INS: DM + insulin therapy; DM+RSV: DM + RSV; DM+RSV+INS: DM + RSV and insulin; NDM: non-diabetic. Streptozotocin was used to induce DM and EP was induced by the placement of a ligature at the fist mandibular and the second maxillary molars. Euthanasia occurred 30 days after the initiation of the study and mandible specimens were subjected for morphometric analysis of bone level. Gingival tissues from mandibular molars were collected for quantification of inflammatory and oxidative stress markers by multiplex assay system and ELISA assay, respectively. Maxillary gingival tissues were processed for real-time polymerase chain reaction (real-time PCR) assessment of markers of bone metabolism and oxidative stress. RESULTS Morphometric analysis revealed greater bone loss in DM+PLAC and DM+INS in comparison to the other treatments (P < 0.05). RSV used in conjunction with INS reduced the levels of interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6, IL-17, interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) and superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD) (P < 0.05). RSV alone reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphatase oxidase (NADPH oxidase) levels, in comparison to DM+INS and DM+RSV+INS (P < 0.05). All treatments upregulated mRNA levels for osteoprotegerin (OPG) in comparison to PLAC (P < 0.05). Sirtuin 1 (SIRT) mRNA levels were lower in PLAC when compared to DM+RSV, DM+RSV+INS and NDM (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION RSV reduced the progression of EP and the levels of NADPH oxidase. Co-treatment with RSV and insulin reduced the levels of pro-inflammatory factors (either proteins or mRNA) and increased the levels of SOD. The data also demonstrated that treatment with RSV and INS alone or in combination had beneficial effects on bone loss.

Abstract
Generalized aggressive periodontitis (GAgP) presents a reduced response to non-surgical therapy. However, it is not clear if the initial clinical, microbiological or immunological characteristics are impacting the worse response to treatment. This study aimed to identify the predictive value of clinical, microbiological and immunological patterns on the clinical response to therapy in GAgP patients. Twenty-four GAgP patients were selected, and gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) and subgingival biofilm were collected. Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, Porphyromonas gingivalis and Tannerella forsythia levels were evaluated by qPCR, and IL-1β and IL-10 concentration by ELISA. Twelve patients were treated with SRP (scaling and root planning), and twelve with SRP plus 375 mg amoxicillin and 250 mg metronidazole (8/8 hours, 7 days) (SRP + AM). The clinical changes (Probing Pocket Depth [PPD] reduction and Clinical Attachment Level [CAL] gain) 6 months post-treatment were correlated to the initial clinical, inflammatory and microbiological variables using stepwise logistic regression (α = 5%). CAL gain at 6 months was 1.16 ± 0.77 for SRP and 1.74 ± 0.57 mm for SRP + AM (P > .05). PPD reduction was 1.96 ± 0.82 for SRP and 2.45 ± 0.77 mm for SRP + AM (P < .05). In the SRP group, IL-10 showed a predictive value for clinical response. The higher the IL-10 concentration at baseline, the higher the reduction in PPD at 6 months (P = .01, r = .68). However, when antimicrobials were administered, no significant influence was detected (P > .05). It can be concluded that the IL-10 levels in GFC act as a predictor of clinical response to GAgP. Moreover, the intake of antimicrobials appears to overlap the influence of the inflammatory response on clinical response to treatment. Clinical trial registration number: NCT03933501.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Aggressive periodontitis (AgP), currently periodontitis grade C, presents early onset, rapid progression, and a poorly established genetic association. Thus, this study aimed to identify genetic variants associated with AgP via whole exome sequencing (WES) through a familial screening approach. METHODS WES was performed in two nuclear families, including a proband and a parent affected by AgP and an unaffected parent and sibling. Common variants among affected individuals, excluding those common to healthy people, from each family, composed the data set associated with AgP. In silico analysis evaluated the impact of each variant on protein structure and protein-protein interactions. Moreover, identified deleterious variants were validated in a populational analysis (n = 96). RESULTS The missense single nucleotide variations (SNVs) rs142548867 in EEFSEC (c.668C>T), rs574301770 in ZNF136 (c.466C>G), and rs72821893 in KRT25 (c.800G>A) and the frameshift indels rs37146475 in GPRC6A (c.2323-2324insT) and c.1366_1372insGGAGCAG in ELN were identified in AgP and have a predicted functional impact on proteins. In silico analysis indicated that the indel in GPRC6A generates a loss of the C-terminal tail of the Gprca protein. Furthermore, this SNV was significantly associated with AgP in a population-based investigation. CONCLUSION Novel frameshift variation in GPRC6A (c.2323-2324insT) was identified as a potential genetic alteration associated with AgP occurrence.

Abstract
Human bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hBMSCs) are important for tissue regeneration but their epigenetic regulation is not well understood. Here we investigate the ability of a non-nucleoside DNA methylation inhibitor, RG108 to induce epigenetic changes at both global and gene-specific levels in order to enhance mesenchymal cell markers, in hBMSCs. hBMSCs were treated with complete culture medium, 50 μM RG108 and DMSO for three days and subjected to viability and apoptosis assays, global and gene-specific methylation/hydroxymethylation, transcript levels’ analysis of epigenetic machinery enzymes and multipotency markers, protein activities of DNMTs and TETs, immunofluorescence staining and western blot analysis for NANOG and OCT4 and flow cytometry for CD105. The RG108, when used at 50 μM, did not affect the viability, apoptosis and proliferation rates of hBMSCs or hydroxymethylation global levels while leading to 75% decrease in DNMTs activity and 42% loss of global DNA methylation levels. In addition, DNMT1 was significantly downregulated while TET1 was upregulated, potentially contributing to the substantial loss of methylation observed. Most importantly, the mesenchymal cell markers CD105, NANOG and OCT4 were upregulated being NANOG and OCT4 epigenetically modulated by RG108, at their gene promoters. We propose that RG108 could be used for epigenetic modulation, promoting epigenetic activation of NANOG and OCT4, without affecting the viability of hBMSCs. DMSO can be considered a modulator of epigenetic machinery enzymes, although with milder effect compared to RG108.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed at investigating the effect of the systemic administration of resveratrol (RESV) on oxidative stress during experimental periodontitis in rats subjected to cigarette smoke inhalation. MATERIAL AND METHODS Experimental periodontitis (EP) was induced in 26 male Wistar rats by the insertion of a ligature around one of the first mandibular and maxillary molars. The animals were assigned randomly to the following groups: cigarette smoke inhalation (CSI; 3 times/d, 8 minutes/d) + resveratrol (10 mg/Kg), that is, SMK + RESV (n = 13) and cigarette smoke inhalation + placebo, that is, SMK + PLAC (n = 13). The substances were administered daily for 30 days (19 days prior and 11 days following EP induction), and then, the animals were euthanized. The maxillary specimens were processed for morphometric analysis of bone loss, and the tissue surrounding the first maxillary molars was collected for mRNA quantification of Sirtuin 1 (SIRT1) by real-time PCR. The gingival tissues surrounding the mandibular first molars were collected for quantification of superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1) and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphatase oxidase (NADPH) using an ELISA assay. RESULTS Reduced bone loss was demonstrated in animals in the SMK + RESV group as compared to those in the SMK + PLAC (P < 0.05) group on the basis of morphometric analysis. Resveratrol promoted higher levels of SIRT and SOD (P < 0.05) as well as reduced levels of NADPH oxidase (P < 0.05) were found in tissues derived from animals in the SMK + RESV group when compared to those in the SMK + PLAC group. CONCLUSION Resveratrol is an efficient therapeutic agent that reduces exacerbation of bone loss found in animals with EP that were also exposed to smoke. The results suggest that its effects could be mediated, at least in part, by its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties which attenuate the effects of oxidative stress on EP in the presence of cigarette smoke.

Abstract
Rheumatoid arthritis and periodontitis are chronic inflammatory diseases which has been closely associated due to the nature of immune-inflammatory imbalance response. Resveratrol is a naturall product with biological proprieties that may promote immunomodulatory effects on host response. This study investigated resveratrol continuous administration effect on experimental periodontitis and arthritis progression in rats. Thirty-five rats were assigned to the following groups: 1-experimental arthritis + experimental periodontitis + placebo (RA+EP +PL) (n = 12); 2 -RA+EP+ ibuprofen (RA+PE+IB) (n = 11); 3-RA+EP+ resveratrol (RA+PE+RSV) (n = 11). After euthanasia, the specimens were processed for morphometric analysis of bone loss, and the gingival tissue surrounding the first molar was collected for quantification of inflammatory markers using a Luminex/MAGpix assay and anti-citrullinated protein antibody (ACCPA) levels were measured by ELISA assay. Serum level of rheumatoid factor (RF) was measured by ELISA assay. Paw edema was analyzed using a plethysmometer. Higher bone loss was observed in PL group, when compared to IB and RSV groups. RSV group presented higher IL-4 concentration than PL and IB groups. Resveratrol reduced RF serum levels and both IB and RSV decreased ACCPA gingival levels. Besides, paw swelling level was significantly lower in IB and RSV groups in the 21th day and only in RSV group in the 28th day. Histological analyzes showed smooth articular surface and higher width of the subchondral cortical in RSV group. Resveratrol showed modulatory effect and seems to reduce the inflammatory signs of arthritis and articular damage throughout the time.

Abstract
This study determined the effect of curcumin on bone healing in animals with diabetes mellitus (DM). One hundred rats were divided into five groups: DM+PLAC, DM+CURC, DM+INS, DM+CURC+INS, and non-DM (CURC, curcumin; PLAC, placebo; INS, insulin). Critical calvarial defects were created and titanium implants were inserted into the tibiae. Calvarial defects were analyzed histometrically, and BMP-2, OPN, OPG, RANKL, Runx2, Osx, β-catenin, Lrp-5, and Dkk1 mRNA levels were quantified by PCR. The implants were removed for a torque evaluation, the peri-implant tissue was collected for mRNA quantification of the same bone-related markers, and the tibiae were submitted to micro-computed tomography. The DM+CURC+INS and non-DM groups exhibited greater closure of the calvaria when compared to the DM+PLAC group (P<0.05). Increased retention of implants was observed in the DM+CURC, DM+CURC+INS, and non-DM groups when compared to the DM+PLAC group (P<0.05). CURC improved bone volume and increased bone-implant contact when compared to DM+PLAC (P<0.05). In calvarial samples, CURC favourably modulated RANKL/OPG and Dkk1 and improved β-catenin levels when compared to DM+PLAC (P<0.05). In peri-implant samples, Dkk1 and RANKL/OPG were down-regulated and BMP-2 up-regulated by CURC when compared to DM+PLAC (P<0.05). CURC reverses the harmful effects of DM in bone healing, contributing to the modulation of bone-related markers.

Abstract
This study investigated some immunological features by experimental periodontitis (EP) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) disease interact in destructive processes in arthritic rats. Rats were assigned to the following groups: EP +RA; RA; EP; and Negative Control. RA was induced by immunizations with type-II collagen and a local immunization with Complete Freund's adjuvant in the paw. Periodontitis was induced by ligating the right first molars. The serum level of rheumatoid factor (RF) and anti-citrullinated protein antibody (ACCPA) were measured before the induction of EP (T1) and at 28 days after (T2) by ELISA assay. ACCPA levels were also measured in the gingival tissue at T2. The specimens were processed for morphometric analysis of bone loss, and the gingival tissue surrounding the first molar was collected for the quantification of interleukin IL-1β, IL-4, IL-6, IL-17 and TNF-α using a Luminex/MAGpix assay. Paw edema was analyzed using a plethysmometer. Periodontitis increased the RF and ACCPA levels in the serum and in the gingival tissue, respectively. Besides, the level of paw swelling was increased by EP and remained in progress until the end of the experiment, when EP was associated with RA. Greater values of IL-17 were observed only when RA was present, in spite of PE. It can be concluded that periodontitis increases rheumatic factor serum levels and citrullinated proteins level in gingival tissues and alter cytokine balance in arthritic rats; at the same time, arthritis increases periodontal destruction, confirming the bidirectional interaction between diseases.

Abstract
This literature review provides an overview of the current scenario regarding the impact of smoking on the progression and treatment of periodontitis; clinical, microbiological and immunological data from studies from our and other groups are presented. In general, preclinical and clinical data are unanimous in demonstrating that smokers present increased susceptibility, greater severity and faster progression of periodontal disease compared with nonsmokers. The evidence further demonstrates that smokers lose more teeth and have a less favorable response to therapy than do nonsmokers. Although it is well established that smoking significantly impacts on the onset, progression and outcome of periodontal disease, the mechanisms involved remain unclear. More importantly, some of the reported deleterious effects of smoking on periodontal tissues have been reported to be reversible upon participation in smoking-cessation programs. Therefore, clinicians should strongly advise smokers to enroll in cessation strategies, even temporarily, in order to improve the overall outcome.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Psychologic stress and clinical hypercortisolism have been related to direct effects on bone metabolism. However, there is a lack of information regarding the outcomes of regenerative approaches under the influence of chronic stress (CS). Enamel matrix derivative (EMD) has been used in periodontal regenerative procedures, resulting in improvement of clinical parameters. Thus, the aim of this histomorphometric study is to evaluate the healing of periodontal defects after treatment with EMD under the influence of CS in the rat model. METHODS Twenty Wistar rats were randomly assigned to two groups; G1: CS (restraint stress for 12 hours/day) (n = 10), and G2: not exposed to CS (n = 10). Fifteen days after initiation of CS, fenestration defects were created at the buccal aspect of the first mandibular molar of all animals from both groups. After the surgeries, the defects of each animal were randomly assigned to two subgroups: non-treated control and treated with EMD. The animals were euthanized 21 days later. RESULTS G1 showed less bone density (BD) compared to G2. EMD provided an increased defect fill (DF) in G1 and higher BD and new cementum formation (NCF) in both groups. The number of tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase-positive osteoclasts was significantly higher in G1 when compared to G2 and in EMD-treated sites of both groups. CONCLUSIONS CS may produce a significant detrimental effect on BD. EMD may provide greater DF compared to non-treated control in the presence of CS and increased BD and NCF in the presence or absence of CS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Occlusal trauma (OT) and smoking are both factors that alter alveolar bone metabolism and therefore could synergistically act on alveolar bone loss. The aim of this experimental study was to evaluate the influence of short-term cigarette smoke inhalation (CSI) on inter-radicular alveolar bone loss promoted by primary OT in a rat model. MATERIAL AND METHODS Forty-eight animals were randomly assigned to one of three groups based on treatment type: OT + CSI (n = 16), animals were exposed to CSI three times per day, for 8 min per exposure, and they concomitantly received unilateral vertical augmentation creating an occlusal interference inducing experimental OT; OT (n = 16), animals received only unilateral vertical augmentation; negative control (NC; n = 16), animals maintained for equal periods to achieve periodontal baseline values of periodontal ligament dimension. Each group was divided into two subgroups (n = 8) based on treatment length: 7 or 14 d. RESULTS After 7 d, the OT + CSI group exhibited significantly higher bone loss compared to the NC group (p = 0.0022). After 14 d, the OT (p < 0.0001) and OT + CSI (p < 0.0001) groups presented significantly higher bone loss compared to the NC group, and OT + CSI resulted in significantly higher bone loss than OT alone (p = 0.0241). The number of tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase-positive cells on the linear surface of the bone crest after 7 d was significantly higher in the OT + CSI group as compared to the NC and OT groups (p < 0.0001 and p = 0.0045, respectively) and remained significantly higher in the OT + CSI group after 14 d, compared to the OT group (p < 0.0001). CONCLUSION Short-term CSI increases early bone loss in association with OT after 7 d, and this worsens in severity after 14 d of exposure.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Resveratrol (3,4',5-trihydroxystilbene) is a naturally occurring product found in numerous plants. Among its biologic properties, resveratrol may promote immunomodulatory effects on the host response. This study investigates the effect of continuous administration of resveratrol on the progression of experimental periodontitis in rats. METHODS Periodontitis was induced in rats in one of the first molars chosen to receive a ligature. Animals were assigned to one of two groups: 1) daily administration of the placebo solution (control group) or 2) 10 mg/kg resveratrol (RESV group). The therapies were administered systemically for 30 days: for 19 days before periodontitis induction and then for another 11 days. Then, the specimens were processed for morphometric analysis of bone loss, and the gingival tissue surrounding the first molar was collected for quantification of interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-4, and IL-17 using a multiplexing assay. RESULTS Intergroup comparisons of the morphometric outcomes revealed higher bone loss values in ligated molars and unligated teeth in the control group than the RESV group (P <0.05). The immunoenzymatic assay of the gingival tissue showed a lower concentration of IL-17 in the RESV group than the control group (P <0.05), whereas no differences in the IL-1β and IL-4 levels of the groups were observed (P >0.05). CONCLUSIONS Continuous administration of resveratrol may decrease periodontal breakdown induced experimentally in rats. In addition, lower levels of IL-17 were found in the RESV group. Future studies are important to confirm the mechanism through which resveratrol exerts its effects.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Our objective was to verify whether prenatal maternal periodontitis is a risk factor for the development of central nervous system disorders in rats. METHODS Periodontitis was induced by placing a ligature around the upper and lower first molars in 9 female Wistar rats (experimental group); 9 rats were left unligated (control group). The maternal general activity in an open field was observed on gestational day (GD) 0, GD 4, and GD 14, and the maternal performance was assessed on the second day after birth. The pups' play behavior was assessed on postnatal day 30. The relative level of reelin was measured in the frontal cortex by real-time PCR analysis. RESULTS The results showed that, compared with the control group, (1) the general activity in female rats with periodontitis was decreased, (2) the maternal performance of these rats was not modified by periodontitis, (3) the play behavior of pups from dams with periodontitis was decreased, and (4) there were no differences in the frontal cortex reelin levels of pups from dams with periodontitis. CONCLUSIONS We conclude that pre- and postnatal periodontitis induces maternal sickness behavior and reduces the pups' play behavior without interference with frontal cortex reelin expression.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE There is a bidirectional relationship between periodontal disease and type-2 diabetes mellitus (DM). Inflammatory mediators may negatively affect glycemic control, and increased glucose levels and resultant glycation end-products may alter the host response against bacterial infection. However, no agreement has been reached regarding the effect of DM on periodontal subgingival microbiota. Therefore, the purpose of the present study was to compare the subgingival biodiversity in deep periodontal pockets of subjects with chronic periodontitis and either uncontrolled type-2 diabetes or no diabetes using 16S rRNA gene cloning and sequencing. MATERIAL AND METHODS Twelve subjects with uncontrolled type-2 diabetes (glycated hemoglobin > 8%) and eleven nondiabetic subjects presenting severe and generalized chronic periodontitis were selected. Subgingival biofilm from periodontal pockets > 5 mm were assessed using the 16S rRNA gene cloning and sequencing technique. RESULTS Significant differences were observed in subgingival microbiota between diabetic and nondiabetic subjects. Diabetic subjects presented higher percentages of total clones of TM7, Aggregatibacter, Neisseria, Gemella, Eikenella, Selenomonas, Actinomyces, Capnocytophaga, Fusobacterium, Veillonella and Streptococcus genera, and lower percentages of Porphyromonas, Filifactor, Eubacterium, Synergistetes, Tannerella and Treponema genera than nondiabetic individuals (p < 0.05). Moreover, some phylotypes, such as Fusobacterium nucleatum, Veillonella parvula, V. dispar and Eikenella corrodens were detected significantly more often in diabetic subjects than in nondiabetic subjects (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION Subjects with uncontrolled type-2 diabetes and chronic periodontitis presented significant dissimilarities in subgingival biodiversity compared with nondiabetic subjects.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Mutations in the gene ALPL in hypophosphatasia (HPP) reduce the function of tissue nonspecific alkaline phosphatase, and the resulting increase in pyrophosphate (PP(i)) contributes to bone and tooth mineralization defects by inhibiting physiologic calcium-phosphate (P(i)) precipitation. Although periodontal phenotypes are well documented, pulp/dentin abnormalities have been suggested in the clinical literature although reports are variable and underlying mechanisms remains unclear. In vitro analyses were used to identify mechanisms involved in HPP-associated pulp/dentin phenotypes. METHODS Primary pulp cells cultured from HPP subjects were established to assay alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, mineralization, and gene expression compared with cells from healthy controls. Exogenous P(i) was provided to the correct P(i)/PP(i) ratio in cell culture. RESULTS HPP cells exhibited significantly reduced ALP activity (by 50%) and mineral nodule formation (by 60%) compared with the controls. The expression of PP(i) regulatory genes was altered in HPP pulp cells, including reduction in the progressive ankylosis gene (ANKH) and increased ectonucleotide pyrophosphatase/phosphodiesterase 1 (ENPP1). Odontoblast marker gene expression was disrupted in HPP cells, including reduced osteopontin (OPN), dentin matrix protein 1 (DMP1), dentin sialophosphoprotein (DSPP), and matrix extracellular phosphoprotein (MEPE). The addition of P(i) provided a corrective measure for mineralization and partially rescued the expression of some genes although cells retained altered messenger RNA levels for PP(i)-associated genes. CONCLUSIONS These studies suggest that under HPP conditions pulp cells have the compromised ability to mineralize and feature a disrupted odontoblast profile, providing a first step toward understanding the molecular mechanisms for dentin phenotypes observed in HPP.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Mutations in the liver/bone/kidney alkaline phosphatase (ALPL) gene in hypophosphatasia (HPP) reduce the function of tissue non-specific alkaline phosphatase (ALP), resulting in increased pyrophosphate (PP(i)) and a severe deficiency in acellular cementum. We hypothesize that exogenous phosphate (P(i)) would rescue the in vitro mineralization capacity of periodontal ligament (PDL) cells harvested from HPP-diagnosed patients, by correcting the P(i)/PP(i) ratio and modulating expression of genes involved with P(i)/PP(i) metabolism. METHODS Ex vivo and in vitro analyses were used to identify mechanisms involved in HPP-associated PDL/tooth root deficiencies. Constitutive expression of PP(i)-associated genes was contrasted in PDL versus pulp tissues obtained from healthy individuals. Primary PDL cell cultures from patients with HPP (monozygotic twin males) were established to assay ALP activity, in vitro mineralization, and gene expression. Exogenous P(i) was provided to correct the P(i)/PP(i) ratio. RESULTS PDL tissues obtained from healthy individuals featured higher basal expression of key PP(i) regulators, genes ALPL, progressive ankylosis protein (ANKH), and ectonucleotide pyrophosphatase/phosphodiesterase 1 (ENPP1), versus paired pulp tissues. A novel ALPL mutation was identified in the twin patients with HPP enrolled in this study. Compared to controls, HPP-PDL cells exhibited significantly reduced ALP and mineralizing capacity, which were rescued by addition of 1 mM P(i). Dysregulated expression of PP(i) regulatory genes ALPL, ANKH, and ENPP1 was also corrected by adding P(i), although other matrix markers evaluated in our study remained downregulated. CONCLUSION These findings underscore the importance of controlling the P(i)/PP(i) ratio toward development of a functional periodontal apparatus and support P(i)/PP(i) imbalance as the etiology of HPP-associated cementum defects.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Periodontitis is a polymicrobial infection characterized by the loss of connective tissue attachment, periodontal ligament and alveolar bone. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of Porphyromonas gingivalis inoculation on the ligature-induced alveolar bone loss (ABL) model in rats. MATERIAL AND METHODS Forty male Wistar rats were randomly assigned to the following groups: G1, control (n = 10); G2, ligature-induced ABL (n = 15); and G3, ligature-induced ABL + P. gingivalis inoculation (n = 15). Rats in G2 and G3 were killed 15, 21 and 30 d after ligature placement, and the following parameters were assessed: microbiological load; ABL; and interleukin (IL)-1β (Il1beta)/Il1ra, Il6/Il10 and Rankl/osteoprotegerin (Opg) mRNA ratios in the gingival tissues, as determined by quantitative PCR. RESULTS Microbiological analyses demonstrated that rats in G1, G2 and G3 were positive for the presence of bacteria (determined using PCR amplification of the 16S gene), but that only the treatment sites of rats in G3 were positive for P. gingivalis at all time-points investigated. Histometrically, significant bone loss (p<0.001) was observed for both ligated groups (G2 and G3) compared with the nonligated group (G1), with higher ABL observed for G2 at all the experimental time-points. Furthermore, gene-expression analysis demonstrated that the presence of P. gingivalis in the dentogingival area significantly decreased the Il1β/Il1ra, Il6/Il10 and Rankl/Opg mRNA ratios compared with ligature alone. CONCLUSION Within the limits of this pilot study, it was concluded that inoculation of P. gingivalis affected the ligature-induced ABL model by the induction of an anti-inflammatory and antiresorptive host response.

Therefore, a comprehensive understanding of the molecular mechanisms by which smoking affects inflammation is vital for preventive and therapeutic strategies on a clinical level. AIM The purpose of the present article is to review the potential biological mechanisms by which smoking affects inflammation, emphasizing recent developments. RESULTS Smoking is reported to effect a number of biological mediators of inflammation through its effect on immune-inflammatory cells, leading to an immunosuppressant state. Recent evidence strongly suggests that the molecular mechanisms behind the modulation of inflammation by smoking mainly involve the nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-kB) family, through the activation of both an inhibitor of IkB kinase (IKK)-dependent and -independent pathway. In addition to NF-kB activation, a number of transcriptional factors including GATA, PAX5 and Smad 3/4, have also been implicated. CONCLUSION Multiple mechanisms may be responsible for the association of smoking and inflammation, and the identification of potential therapeutic targets should guide future research.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Tobacco use is the most significant risk factor of periodontal disease. Clinical evidence has demonstrated that tobacco may negatively influence the results after surgical and non-surgical periodontal therapy. Enamel matrix derivative (EMD) have been used in periodontal regenerative procedures resulting in improvement of clinical parameters. The effect of EMD in the presence of tobacco compounds is unclear. Thus, the aim of the present study is to evaluate the impact of cigarette smoke inhalation (CSI) on the results of EMD treatment. METHODS Twenty-two Wistar rats were assigned to two groups: Group 1, CSI (n = 11); Group 2, non-exposed (n = 11). Thirty days after initiation of CSI, fenestration defects were created at the buccal aspect of the first mandibular molar. The study followed a split-mouth design. After the surgeries the defects were randomly assigned to two subgroups: non-treated control and treated with EMD. The animals were sacrificed 21 days later and the percentage of defect fill, density of newly formed bone, and new cementum formation were histometrically assessed. The number of osteoclasts was determined by tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase. RESULTS CSI was associated with less bone density compared to the non-exposed group. EMD provided an increased defect fill and new cementum formation in both groups. The number of tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase-positive osteoclasts was significantly higher in the CSI non-treated control group compared to the non-treated control of the non-exposed animals. CONCLUSIONS EMD may provide increased defect fill and cementum formation in the presence or absence of CSI. However, tobacco smoke produced a detrimental effect on bone healing when density of newly formed bone was considered.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Guided tissue regeneration has been shown to lead to periodontal regeneration, however, the mechanisms involved remain to be clarified. The present study was carried out to assess the expression of genes involved in the healing process of periodontal tissues in membrane-protected vs. nonprotected intrabony defects in humans. MATERIAL AND METHODS Thirty patients with deep intrabony defects (> or = 5 mm, two or three walls) around teeth that were scheduled for extraction were selected and randomly assigned to receive one of the following treatments: flap surgery alone (control group) or flap surgery plus guided tissue regeneration (expanded polytetrafluorethylene (e-PTFE) membrane) (test group). Twenty-one days later, the newly formed tissue was harvested and quantitatively assessed using the polymerase chain reaction assay for the expression of the following genes: alkaline phosphatase, receptor activator of nuclear factor-kappa B ligand, osteoprotegerin, osteopontin, osteocalcin, bone sialoprotein, basic fibroblast growth factor, interleukin-1, interleukin-4, interleukin-6, matrix metalloproteinase-2 and matrix metalloproteinase-9. RESULTS Data analysis demonstrated that mRNA levels for alkaline phosphatase, receptor activator of nuclear factor-kappa B ligand, osteoprotegerin, osteopontin, bone sialoprotein, basic fibroblast growth factor, interleukin-1, interleukin-6, matrix metalloproteinase-2 and matrix metalloproteinase -9 were higher in the sites where guided tissue regeneration was applied compared with the control sites (p < 0.05), whereas osteocalcin mRNA levels were lower (p < 0.05). No difference was observed in interleukin-4 mRNA levels between control and test groups. CONCLUSION Within the limits of this study, it can be concluded that genes are differentially expressed in membrane barrier-led periodontal healing when compared with flap surgery alone, and this may account for the clinical outcome achieved by guided tissue regeneration.

Abstract
AIM This study evaluated whether diabetes modulates gene expression [interleukin (IL)-1beta, IL-1ra, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10; tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha; interferon (IFN)-gamma, receptor activator of NF-kappaB ligand (RANKL) and osteoprotegerin (OPG)] in sites with periodontitis. MATERIALS AND METHODS Gingival biopsies were harvested and divided into three groups--Control group: systemically and periodontally healthy subjects (n = 10); Periodontitis group: systemically healthy subjects diagnosed with chronic periodontitis (n = 20); Diabetes group: type 1 diabetic subjects, diagnosed with chronic periodontitis (n = 20). Total RNA was obtained and analyzed by quantitative polymerase chain reaction. RESULTS Data analysis demonstrated that, except for OPG, mRNA levels for all factors were increased by inflammation (P < 0.001). Interleukin-1beta, IL-1ra, IL-6, IL-8, IFN-gamma, and RANKL mRNA levels were higher in the diabetic group when compared with the control non-periodontitis group (P < 0.05), whereas IL-10 and OPG were lower (P < 0.05). No difference was observed for TNF-alpha between diabetic and control groups (P > 0.05). Diabetes lowered IL-1beta, IL-8, IL-10, TNF-alpha, RANKL, and OPG mRNA levels in sites with comparable type of periodontitis (P < 0.001). Moreover, increased RANKL:OPG and IL-6:IL-10 ratios were found. CONCLUSION AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE Taken together, these data suggest that decreased levels of IL-10 and OPG may play an important role in the periodontal breakdown in diabetic patients.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE This study evaluated whether the biochemical changes associated with type 2 diabetes modulate the expression of interleukin-1beta, interleukin-6, interleukin-8, and interferon-gamma in sites with chronic periodontitis. MATERIAL AND METHODS Biopsies were harvested and divided into three groups: group 1, systemically and periodontally healthy subjects (n = 10); group 2, systemically healthy subjects with moderate-to-severe chronic periodontitis (probing depth > 6 mm) (n = 20); and group 3, type 2 diabetic subjects with periodontitis (n = 20). Cytokine levels were assessed in the gingival tissues by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay analysis. RESULTS Data analysis demonstrated that the interleukin-1beta, interleukin-6, interleukin-8, and interferon-gamma levels were higher in the presence of periodontal inflammation than in the absence of inflammation, regardless of systemic status. The interleukin-1beta and interleukin-6 levels were higher in diabetic subjects (group 3) than in systemically healthy patients with comparable types of periodontitis (group 2). No difference was observed for the interleukin-8 and interferon-gamma levels between groups 2 and 3. CONCLUSION Within the limits of this study, it was concluded that type 2 diabetes was associated with increased expression of interleukin-1beta and interleukin-6 in periodontally inflamed tissues of diabetic patients, relative to nondiabetic subjects, and that such overexpression may be involved in the mechanisms by which type 2 diabetes enhances periodontal destruction.

Abstract
The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the influence of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) on bone regeneration in dehiscence-type bone defects around dental implants. Ten male adult mongrel dogs were used. Three months after teeth extractions, an osteotomie for implantation and a buccal dehiscence defect were prepared on both sides of the jaws. Two dental implants with machined surfaces were placed on each implant site of the mandible. Dehiscences were randomly assigned to the following groups: (1) test (PRP) and (2) control. After 3 months animals were sacrificed; implants and adjacent hard tissues were processed for undecalcified sections. Bone-to-implant contact (BIC), bone density (BD) within the limits of implant threads, bone density (BO) and new bone area (NB) in a zone lateral to the implant, corresponding to bone defects, were obtained and measured. Inter group analysis (paired Student's t-test, alpha = 5%) demonstrated no statistically significant differences for any of the parameters when PRP was used (P > 0.05). Within the limits of the present study, it was concluded that platelet-rich plasma alone did not enhance bone regeneration for peri-implant defects.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE The aim of the present study was to evaluate comparatively the effect of two different approaches for root decontamination on new cementum formation following guided tissue regeneration (GTR). MATERIAL AND METHODS Nine mongrel dogs were used to obtain bilateral chronic class III furcation defects by placing cotton ligatures around both third mandibular premolars. The teeth were randomly assigned to receive one of the following treatments: scaling and root planing, by means of hand and rotatory instruments, in order to remove soft and hard deposits as well as all root cementum (group A); or removal of only soft microbial deposits, by polishing the root surface with rubber cups and polishing paste, aiming for maximum root cementum preservation (group B). Both groups were treated with GTR, with the use of resorbable polyglycolic-lactic acid membranes (RESOLUT XT). RESULTS Four months later, data analysis showed that a superior length (mm) (3.59 +/- 1.67 and 6.20 +/- 2.26 for groups A and B, respectively; p = 0.004) and a thicker layer (microm) (18.89 +/- 9.47 and 52.29 +/- 22.48 for groups A and B, respectively; p = 0.001) of new cementum was achieved by keeping the root cementum in place during root decontamination (group B). Regardless of the treatment modality, the new cementum was predominantly of a reparative, cellular extrinsic and intrinsic fiber type. CONCLUSION Within the limits of the present study, it may be concluded that root cementum preservation may affect the new cementum formation following GTR in class III furcation defects, and the treatment modality did not influence the type of newly formed cementum.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to evaluate histometrically the influence of estrogen deficiency, and its therapies, on the quality of the tooth-supporting alveolar bone. MATERIAL AND METHODS Seventy-three female rats were randomly assigned to one of the following groups: group 1 (n = 15), sham surgery; group 2 (n = 15), bilateral ovariectomy (OVX); group 3 (n = 14), OVX plus calcitonin (16 IU/kg); group 4 (n = 14), OVX plus estrogen (20 microg/kg); and group 5 (n = 15), OVX plus alendronate (5 mg/kg). Eighty days after surgery, the animals were killed and their mandibles were removed and processed for histology. Bone density (BD) in the furcation area of the first mandibular molar (i.e. the percentage of demineralized bone tissue in a 1,000 microm zone under the furcation) was histometrically obtained. RESULTS Data analysis demonstrated that estrogen deficiency negatively affected the tooth-supporting bone density (79.45% +/- 4.22 and 55.23% +/- 6.45, for groups 1 and 2, respectively), and that estradiol and alendronate therapies prevented this effect (61.67% +/- 6.87, 78.09% +/- 3.12 and 81.47% +/- 4.58, for groups 3, 4 and 5, respectively). CONCLUSION Within the limits of this study, it can be concluded that the density of tooth-supporting bone is affected by estrogen deficiency, and that estradiol and alendronate therapies, but not calcitonin, provide protection against this effect.

Abstract
AIM Evaluation of the treatment of gingival recessions with coronally positioned flap with or without acellular dermal matrix allograft (ADM) after a period of 24 months. METHODS Thirteen patients with bilateral gingival recessions were included. The defects were randomly assigned to one of the treatments: coronally positioned flap plus ADM or coronally positioned flap alone. The clinical measurements were taken before the surgeries and after 6, 12 and 24 months. RESULTS At baseline, the mean values for recession height were 3.46 and 3.58 mm for the defects treated with and without the graft, respectively (p>0.05). No significant differences between the groups were observed after 6 and 12 months in this parameter. However, after 24 months, the group treated with coronally positioned flap alone showed a greater recession height when compared with the group treated with ADM (1.62 and 1.15 mm, respectively--p<0.05). A significant increase in the thickness of keratinized tissue was observed in the group treated with ADM as compared with coronally positioned flap alone (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS ADM may reduce the residual gingival recession observed after 24 months in defects treated with coronally positioned flap. In addition, a greater gingival thickness may be achieved when the graft is used.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Although wound healing has been reported to be impaired with aging, very little is known about its effect on periodontal tissues. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate, histologically in rats, the influence of aging on a spontaneous periodontal healing model. MATERIAL AND METHODS Twenty-four male Wistar rats were used and assigned to the following groups: control (n = 12; 2 mo old) and aged (n = 12; 18 mo old). Fenestration defects (4 x 3 x 1 mm) were created bilaterally at the buccal aspect of the distal root of the first mandibular molars, and the mandibulae were retrieved 3 and 6 wk postoperatively. The percentage of bone fill and density of newly formed bone, new cementum formation (NC), and the extension of the remaining defect (ERD) were histometrically obtained. RESULTS Intragroup analysis demonstrated that, except for cementum, all histological parameters significantly improved over time (p < 0.05). Intergroup analysis additionally showed that the defects were initially similar in size, and that at 3 wk aging negatively influenced newly formed bone (86.38 +/- 2.99% and 73.06 +/- 3.21%, p < 0.001, for groups control and aged, respectively), BF (75.84 +/- 16.53% and 57.70 +/- 22.28%, p = 0.014) and ERD (0.41 +/- 0.20 mm and 1.17 +/- 0.37 mm, p < 0.001). At 6 wk, aging negatively influenced newly formed bone (88.12 +/- 2.90% and 78.19 +/- 5.35%, p < 0.001, for groups control and aged, respectively) and ERD (0.01 +/- 0.006 mm and 0.34 +/- 0.18 mm, p = 0.003), but not BF (98.15 +/- 2.43% and 87.87 +/- 11.63%, p > 0.05). No new cementum was formed along the root surface in the above groups. CONCLUSION Within the limits of the present study, data analysis suggests that aging may impair, but not prevent, periodontal healing.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate, histometrically, the healing of gingival recession treated by coronally positioned flaps (CPF) with or without acellular dermal matrix (ADM) as a subepithelial graft. METHODS Gingival recessions were created on the upper cuspids of six dogs and were randomly assigned to: CPF+ADM (ADM group) or CPF alone (CPF group). After 4 months, the dogs were sacrificed, and the histometric measurements were performed. RESULTS The epithelial length was 2.28 + 0.92 mm and 2.10 + 0.46 mm for the ADM and CPF groups, respectively (P=0.74). The connective tissue adaptation was 0.05 + 0.08 mm for the ADM group and 0.06 + 0.08 mm for the CPF group (P=0.36). The new cementum was 2.35 + 1.55 mm and 2.90 + 0.96 mm in the ADM and CPF groups, respectively (P=0.53). The new bone was 0.60 + 1.36 mm for the ADM group and 0.35 + 0.82 mm for the CPF group (P=0.53). The gingival recession was -0.88 + 1.33 mm in the ADM group and -0.21 + 0.22 mm in the CPF group (P=0.21). The gingival thickness was 1.63 + 0.28 mm in the ADM group and 1.16 + 0.20 mm in the CPF group (P=0.002).

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of the present study was to evaluate the clinical effects of one-stage periodontal debridement with an ultrasonic instrument, associated with 0.5% povidone (pvp)-iodine irrigation in patients with chronic periodontitis. METHODS Forty-five patients were randomly assigned into three groups: the control group (CG) received quadrant root planing at 1-week intervals over four consecutive sessions; the periodontal debridement plus pvp-iodine group (PD-PIG) received a 45-minute full-mouth debridement with an ultrasonic instrument, associated with 0.5% pvp-iodine irrigation; and the periodontal debridement group (PDG) received a 45-minute full-mouth periodontal debridement with an ultrasonic instrument, associated with NaCl irrigation. RESULTS At the 3-month evaluation, the mean probing depth (PD) reduction in CG was 2.51+/-0.52 mm, 2.53+/-0.50 mm in PD-PIG, and 2.58+/-0.60 mm in PDG (P<0.05). The clinical attachment level (CAL) analysis showed a statistically significant gain in all groups compared to baseline (1.87+/-0.56 mm [CG], 1.94+/-0.70 mm [PD-PIG], and 1.99+/-0.92 mm [PDG]). Intergroup analysis of PD and CAL at 1 and 3 months showed no differences (P>0.05). The N-benzoyl-L-arginine-p-nitroanilide (BAPNA) test showed a significant reduction in trypsin activity only during the first month (P<0.05); at 3 months there were no differences compared to baseline (P=0.80). CONCLUSION This study provides no evidence that pvp-iodine is effective as an adjunct for one-stage periodontal debridement.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate, clinically, the use of guided tissue regeneration (GTR) with a resorbable polylactic acid membrane (Atrisorb) in the treatment of Class II furcation defects in humans. METHODS The study included 10 patients with two comparable Class II furcations in lower molars. The lesions were randomly assigned to one of the treatments: GTR with an Atrisorb resorbable membrane (test) or open flap debridement (control). The following clinical parameters were recorded before the surgeries (baseline) and after a healing period of 6 months: relative vertical clinical attachment level, relative horizontal clinical attachment level, probing depths, position of the gingival margin and width of the keratinized tissue. RESULTS After the intra-group comparison (baseline versus 6 months), statistically significant differences were found for the parameters: probing depth, relative vertical clinical attachment level and relative horizontal clinical attachment level, in both groups (P < 0.05). Comparing the two groups, a statistically significant difference was found in the probing depth reduction favoring the GTR group (P < 0.05). No significant differences were found in the other parameters.

BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to clinically evaluate the treatment of Class I gingival recessions by coronally positioned flap with or without acellular dermal matrix allograft (ADM). METHODS Thirteen patients with comparable bilateral Miller Class I gingival recessions (> or = 3.0 mm) were selected. The defects were randomly assigned to one of the treatments: coronally positioned flap and acellular dermal matrix (ADM group) or coronally positioned flap alone (CPF group). The clinical parameters included: probing depth (PD), clinical attachment level (CAL), recession height (RH), recession width (RW), height of keratinized tissue (HKT), thickness of keratinized tissue (TKT), plaque index (PI), and gingival index (GI). The measurements were taken before the surgeries and after 6 months. RESULTS The mean baseline recession was 3.4 mm and 3.5 mm for ADM group and CPF group, respectively. After 6 months, both treatments resulted in significant root coverage (P < 0.01), reaching an average of 2.6 mm (76%) in the ADM group and 2.5 mm (71%) in the CPF group. The difference in recession reduction between treatments was not statistically significant. There were no statistically significant differences between the treatments in PD, CAL, RH, RW, and HKT. However, the mean TKT gain was 0.7 mm for the ADM group and 0.2 mm for the CPF group (P < 0.01). CONCLUSION It can be concluded that both techniques could provide significant root coverage in Class I gingival recessions; however, a greater keratinized tissue thickness can be expected with ADM.
