Abstract
This study evaluated clinical survival rates of 170 Morse taper implants through clinical and mechanical parameters in different therapeutic approaches such as single crowns, fixed partial prostheses and fixed full-arch prostheses. Patients referred to the Center on Education and Research on Dental Implants from May 2017 to July 2018 with the indication for dental implants therapy, aged >18 years, without periodontal disease, recent evidence of inflammatory activity or other oral disorders, current pregnancy, uncontrolled diabetes mellitus or heavy smoking habit were included in this study. After 12 weeks of healing since the implants were placed in the mandible and after 16 weeks following implants placed in the maxilla, patients returned to the Center for prosthetic rehabilitation. After implant therapy, all patients underwent periodical, clinical and prosthetic examinations every six months. The implant was used as a unit of evaluation for all analysis parameters. Prosthetic restorations involved 109 fixed reconstructions in function. Few prosthetic complications were reported (6.55%). Twenty implants were rehabilitated with cemented prostheses; from those, one crown suffered a loss in retention/decementation. Of the 148 implants rehabilitated with screwed-retained prostheses, 6.76% suffered prosthetic screw loosening. The cumulative implant survival rate was 98.2%. When peri-implant tissue health was evaluated, the keratinized mucosa band appeared to be related to peri-implant tissue stability. Thus, Morse taper implants represented a successful procedure for implant rehabilitation, with a high cumulative implant survival rate, low prevalence of biological and prosthetic complications and good stability of peri-implant tissues over the period assessed.

Abstract
This scoping review systematically evaluates the use of systemic antibiotics in treating acute irreversible pulpitis, integrating clinical practice patterns with recent molecular insights. We analyzed clinical evidence on antibiotic prescription trends among dental professionals and examined molecular research advancements in relation to pulpitis. This review is intended to bridge the gap between clinical practice and molecular research, guiding more evidence-based approaches to treating acute irreversible pulpitis. Electronic databases were searched for relevant articles published in English based on the objective of the review. A second search using all identified keywords and index terms was undertaken across all the included databases. In addition, a reference list of identified articles was searched. Studies including original research, systematic reviews, meta-analyses, clinical trials, and observational and retrospective studies, all written in English and published from 2010 onwards, were included, and an analysis of the text words contained in the titles and abstracts of the retrieved papers and of the index terms used to describe the articles was performed. A total of N = 53 articles were selected. Altogether, N = 43 (76.79%) articles were cross-sectional studies, N = 4 (11.11%) were systematic reviews, and N = 3 (5.36%) were guidelines. The most frequent level of evidence was level VI (N = 43 (76.79%). The mean percentage of dentists who prescribed antibiotics to treat acute irreversible pulpitis was 23.89 ± 23.74% (range: 0.05-75.7). Similarly, for specialists, it was 22.41 ± 15.64 (range 2.2-50.4), and the percentage for undergraduates was 17.52 ± 20.59 (range 0-62.6). The significant developments in research models for pulpitis research and the characterisation of biomarkers have led to better management strategies. Concurrently, significant advancements in molecular research provide new understandings of pulpitis, suggesting alternative therapeutic approaches. Although there are guidelines available, increased rates of antibiotic prescription are still prevalent around the globe.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This in vitro study is aimed at assessing whether implant primary stability is influenced by implant length in artificial bone with varying densities. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 120 truncated-conical implants (60 long-length: 3p L, 3.8 × 14 mm; 60 short-length: 3p S, 3.8 × 8 mm) were inserted into 20, 30, and 40 pounds per cubic foot (PCF) density polyurethane blocks. The insertion torque (IT), removal torque (RT), and resonance frequency analysis (RFA) values were recorded for each experimental condition. RESULTS In 30 and 40 PCF blocks, 3p S implants exhibited significantly higher IT values (90 and 80 Ncm, respectively) than 3p L (85 and 50 Ncm, respectively). Similarly, RT was significantly higher for 3p S implants in 30 and 40 PCF blocks (57 and 90 Ncm, respectively). However, there were no significant differences in RFA values, except for the 20 PCF block, where 3pS implants showed significantly lower values (63 ISQ) than 3p L implants (67 ISQ) in both the distal and mesial directions. CONCLUSIONS These results demonstrated that the implant's length mainly influences the IT and RT values in the polyurethane blocks that mimic the mandibular region of the bone, resulting in higher values for the 3p S implants, while the RFA values remained unaffected. However, in the lowest density block simulating the maxillary bone, 3p L implants exhibited significantly higher ISQ values. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Therefore, our data offer valuable insights into the biomechanical behavior of these implants, which could be clinically beneficial for enhancing surgical planning.

Abstract
The issue of dental implant placement relative to the alveolar crest, whether in supracrestal, equicrestal, or subcrestal positions, remains highly controversial, leading to conflicting data in various studies. Three-dimensional (3D) Finite Element Analysis (FEA) can offer insights into the biomechanical aspects of dental implants and the surrounding bone. A 3D model of the jaw was generated using computed tomography (CT) scans, considering a cortical thickness of 1.5 mm. Subsequently, Morse cone implant-abutment connection implants were virtually positioned at the model's center, at equicrestal (0 mm) and subcrestal levels (-1 mm and -2 mm). The findings indicated the highest stress within the cortical bone around the equicrestally placed implant, the lowest stress in the -2 mm subcrestally placed implant, and intermediate stresses in the -1 mm subcrestally placed implant. In terms of clinical relevance, this study suggested that subcrestal placement of a Morse cone implant-abutment connection (ranging between -1 and -2 mm) could be recommended to reduce peri-implant bone resorption and achieve longer-term implant success.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Interleukin-17 plays a pivotal role in both hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) and in maintaining oral homeostasis, but their potential link remains unknown. Thus, we aimed to evaluate and quantify the oral burden of patients with HS. METHODS In this real-life, multicenter, cross-sectional study, patients with HS were clinically evaluated by two board-certified dermatologists and two board-certified dentists. Oral comorbidities were carefully collected with medical history and therapeutic information. RESULTS A total of 102 patients (44.0 ± 0.9 years, body mass index 27.0 ± 2.2 kg/m2) were enrolled. Remarkably, 48% and 43% did not undergo at least an oral hygiene or a dental visit each year, respectively. Oral disorders were found in 55.9% of patients with HS, in particular 39.2% had caries and 46.7% reported at least one missing tooth. The main oral manifestations in patients with HS were recurrent aphthous stomatitis (N = 19, 19.2%), amalgam tattoo (N = 14, 14.1%), leukoplakia (N = 11, 11.1%), nicotinic stomatitis (N = 9, 9.1%), papilloma (N = 8, 8.1%), and geographic tongue (N = 8, 8.1%). Whilst the main predictor of oral pathological conditions was Hurley staging (P = 0.0276), multivariate regression analysis indicated that gender and International Hidradenitis Suppurativa Severity Score System (IHS4) were the main predictors for the presence of caries and number of missing teeth. CONCLUSION As a result of the relevant oral burden in patients with HS, dentists should be part of the multidisciplinary team and oral education should be promoted among patients with HS.

Abstract
Extreme atrophy of the maxilla still poses challenges for clinicians. Some of the techniques used to address this issue can be complex, risky, expensive, and time consuming, often requiring skilled surgeons. While many commonly used techniques have achieved very high success rates, complications may arise in certain cases. In this context, the premaxillary device (PD) technique offers a simpler approach to reconstruct severely atrophic maxillae, aiming to avoid more complicated and risky surgical procedures. Finite element analysis (FEA) enables the evaluation of different aspects of dental implant biomechanics. Our results demonstrated that using a PD allows for an optimal distribution of stresses on the basal bone, avoiding tension peaks that can lead to bone resorption or implant failure. ANSYS® was used to perform localized finite element analysis (FEA), enabling a more precise examination of the peri-crestal area and the PD through an accurate mesh element reconstruction, which facilitated the mathematical solution of FEA. The most favorable biomechanical behavior was observed for materials such as titanium alloys, which helped to reduce stress levels on bone, implants, screws, and abutments. Additionally, stress values remained within the limits of basal bone and titanium alloy strengths. In conclusion, from a biomechanical point of view, PDs appear to be viable alternatives for rehabilitating severe atrophic maxillae.

Abstract
Combining tooth extraction and implant placement reduces the number of surgical procedures that a patient must undergo. Thus, the present study aimed to compare the stability of two types of conical implants (TAC and INTRALOCK) and another cylindrical one (CYROTH), inserted with a range of angulation of 15-20 degrees in low-density polyurethane blocks (10 and 20 pounds per cubic foot, PCF) with or without a cortical lamina (30 PCF), which potentially mimicked the post-extraction in vivo condition. For this purpose, a total of 120 polyurethane sites were prepared (10 for each implant and condition) and the Insertion Torque (IT), Removal Torque (RT), and Resonance Frequency Analysis (RFA) were measured, following a Three-Way analysis of variance followed by Tukey's post hoc test for the statistical analysis of data. The IT and RT values registered for all implant types were directly proportional to the polyurethane density. The highest IT was registered by INTRALOCK implants in the highest-density block (32.44 ± 3.28 Ncm). In contrast, the highest RFA, a well-known index of Implant Stability Quotient (ISQ), was shown by TAC implants in all clinical situations (up to 63 ISQ in the 20 PCF block without the cortical sheet), especially in lower-density blocks. Although more pre-clinical and clinical studies are required, these results show a better primary stability of TAC conical implants in all tested densities of this post-extraction model, with a higher ISQ, despite their IT.

Abstract
Oxidative stress is one of the main causes of cell damage, leading to the onset of several diseases, and antioxidants represent a barrier against the production of reactive species. Saliva is receiving increasing interest as a promising biofluid to study the onset of diseases and assess the overall health status of an individual. The antioxidant capacity of saliva can be a useful indicator of the health status of the oral cavity, and it is nowadays evaluated mainly through spectroscopic methods that rely on benchtop machines and liquid reagents. We developed a low-cost screen-printed sensor based on cerium oxide nanoparticles that can be used to assess the antioxidant capacity of biofluids as an alternative to traditional methods. The sensor development process was investigated via a quality-by-design approach to identify the most critical parameters of the process for further optimization. The sensor was tested in the detection of ascorbic acid, which is used as an equivalent in the assessment of overall antioxidant capacity. The LoDs ranged from 0.1147 to 0.3528 mM, while the recoveries varied from 80% to 121.1%, being therefore comparable with those of the golden standard SAT test, whose recovery value was 96.3%. Therefore, the sensor achieved a satisfactory sensitivity and linearity in the range of clinical interest for saliva and was validated against the state-of-the-art equipment for antioxidant capacity evaluation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Different factors may affect new bone formation following maxillary sinus floor augmentation for the rehabilitation of posterior edentulous maxilla. The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of residual bone height (RBH) on new bone formation after lateral sinus augmentation utilizing different biomaterials, through a network meta-analysis (NMA). METHODS PUBMED, Scopus, and Web of Science electronic databases were searched until 31 December 2022 to obtain relevant articles. A hand search was also conducted. Randomised controlled studies on maxillary sinus augmentation comparing different grafting materials in patients with atrophic posterior maxilla, in need of prosthetic rehabilitation, were included. The risk of bias was assessed following the guidelines of the Cochrane Collaboration. The primary outcome was new bone formation (NBF), assessed histomorphometrically. The statistical analysis was performed by splitting the data according to RBH (<4 mm and ≥4 mm). RESULTS A total of 67 studies were eligible for conducting NMA. Overall, in the included studies, 1955 patients were treated and 2405 sinus augmentation procedures were performed. The biomaterials used were grouped into: autogenous bone (Auto), xenografts (XG), allografts (AG), alloplasts (AP), bioactive agents (Bio), hyaluronic acid (HA), and combinations of these. An inconsistency factor (IF) seen in the entire loop of the XG, AP, and Bio+AP was found to be statistically significant. The highest-ranked biomaterials for the <4 mm RBH outcome were XG+AG, XG+AP, and Auto. Similarly, the surface under the cumulative ranking curve (SUCRA) of biomaterials for ≥4 mm RBH was Auto, Bio+XG, and XG+Auto. CONCLUSION There is no grafting biomaterial that is consistently performing better than others. The performance of the materials in terms of NBF may depend on the RBH. While choosing a biomaterial, practitioners should consider both patient-specific aspects and sinus clinical characteristics.

Abstract
Stabilization of dental implants in the sinus region with a bone height below 4 mm gen-erally requires a two-stage sinus floor elevation surgery. To improve this aspect, the aim of this retrospective study was to demonstrate the feasibility of performing a one-stage maxillary sinus augmentation using an innovative self-condensing implant design, even in case of a bone height close to 2 mm. Clinical and radiological outcomes from 54 patients (26 females; 28 males; 69 total implants positioned) were analyzed 3 years post-surgery. The three-dimensional grafts change was evaluated by Cone-Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) before surgery (T0), immediately after surgery (T1), and 1-year post-surgery (T2). The sinus floor levels measured at the medial (M-W), middle (MD-W), and lateral (L-W) walls reported: M-W of 1.9 ± 2.4 mm (T1) and 1.7 ± 2.6 mm (T2); MD-W of -0.1 ± 2.7 mm (T1) and 0.7 ± 2.4 mm (T2); L-W of 3.1 ± 3.0 mm (T1) and 3.1 ± 3.0 mm (T2); besides a bone crest height (C-F) of 4.6 ± 2.0 mm (T1) and 12.1 ± 1.4 mm (T2). Moreover, after 3 years only 1 implant was lost, and so an implant survival rate of 98.55% was recorded. In conclusion, these results suggest the efficacy of using this implant design for a one-stage sinus lift approach, not only in terms of increased implant survival rate and decreased marginal bone loss, but also for its potential applicability in case of reduced bone height.

Abstract
Aligners are the common devices used in orthodontics for the correction of malocclusion. Various materials and techniques are employed to fabricate aligners. One of those includes thermoformed and 3D aligners. These aligners can be worn for several days, and their impact on periodontal health is not known. Therefore, the aim of our protocol is to determine the effectiveness of these aligners in correcting malocclusion and their impact on periodontal health and oral microbiome. A double-blinded randomized controlled clinical trial with a total of n = 60 patients will be included with n = 30 in each group (Test: 3D printed aligners and Control: Thermoformed). The evaluation of oral health indices such as basic periodontal examination (BPE), periodontal screening and recording (PSR) that provide the status of periodontal health will be recorded. The oral microbiome assessment will be conducted with polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The primary endpoint will be the correction of malocclusion, and the secondary end point will be the status of periodontal health and oral microbiome. The duration of follow-up for each group will be 7 days for periodontal health and oral microbiome and 6 months for the space closure of 5 mm by 3D and thermoformed aligners.

Abstract
Background: tooth extraction is a common procedure in oral surgery. The socket healing process involves hard and soft tissues and is characterized by intense remodeling, which may determine consistent dimension changes. Several autologous platelet concentrates (APCs) proved to be effective for enhancing alveolar socket healing after tooth extraction, accelerating socket closure and countering alveolar bone resorption. Concentrated growth factors (CGFs) are one of the most recently developed APCs, and their effect on the socket healing process still needs to be confirmed. Aim: The aim of the present split-mouth study was to evaluate the effectiveness of CGFs in enhancing the healing process in the postextraction alveolar socket and reducing postoperative pain. Methods: One hundred and fifty-four extractions were performed. One of the extraction sockets of each patient was treated with CGFs (test site), and the other socket was unfilled (control site). The main outcomes were: healing index, alveolar dimensions at the crestal level, socket closure, and pain perception. Descriptive statistics of the results were analyzed. Follow-up data were compared to baseline using paired tests. Results: The healing index on day 7 was significantly better (p < 0.001) in the test group (5.01 ± 1.30) as compared to the control group (6.65 ± 1.41). The mean visual analog scale for pain (VAS) was significantly higher for the control group when compared to the CGF group in the first 5 days postextraction. There was a trend toward greater socket closure in the CGF group, indicating faster healing, as compared to the control group at 7, 14, and 21 days. Conclusions: CGFs can represent a useful adjunctive tool, considering their mechanical and biological properties, for improving alveolar socket healing and reducing postoperative patient discomfort.

Abstract
Background: This investigation aimed to radiographically assess the variations of graft dimension following maxillary sinus augmentation by the lateral approach. Methods: Eighteen patients (seven males), with a mean age at surgery of 66.5 ± 9.8 (range 52−82) years, were unilaterally treated. Thirty-five dental implants were positioned in the posterior maxilla simultaneously to grafting with heterologous biomaterials. Intraoral radiographs taken at the time of surgery, after six months, and at the longest follow-up (up to nine years after implant placement) were analyzed. The following distances were measured: mesio-distal width of the graft, vertical distance from implant apex to most coronal level of the graft, distance from the mesial aspect of the (mesial) implant to the mesial graft extension; distance from the distal aspect of the (distal) implant to the distal graft extension, and graft height along the implant axis. The dimensional changes with respect to baseline, after six months and at the longest follow-up were calculated. Results: The patient-based mean follow-up was 38.3 ± 30.1 months (range 12−108 months). The mean residual bone height at the mesial and distal aspect of the implants was 3.19 ± 2.05 mm and 2.65 ± 1.60 mm, respectively (p = 0.38). The mean graft width at baseline was 27.95 ± 5.23 mm, and the mean graft width reduction was 10.2 ± 12.7% (2.98 ± 3.62 mm) and 11.3 ± 14.4% (3.36 ± 4.08 mm) at six months and at the latest follow-up. The change was significant at six months (p = 0.005), but did not show significant further variation (p = 0.11). On the mesial and distal aspect, the mean graft extension decreased by 1.56 ± 2.67 mm and 0.84 ± 2.71 mm at the latest follow-up. No significant difference between mesial and distal changes was found (p = 0.24), suggesting that the biomaterial is resorbed homogeneously on both sides. The mean graft height was 11.92 ± 2.53 mm at baseline and decreased by 9.3 ± 9.05% (1.11 ± 1.09 mm) at six months (p < 0.001). Non-significant further changes were found at the latest follow-up (p = 0.10). Conclusions: after early remodeling, heterologous bone substitutes showed a good dimensional stability in the mid-term for maxillary sinus augmentation.

Abstract
Background. The maxillary sinus lift is a popular and predictable technique associated with implant-supported rehabilitation of the severely atrophic maxilla. The aim of the present retrospective study was to investigate the effectiveness of transcrestal maxillary sinus augmentation and the graft resorption pattern using different heterologous bone substitutes. Methods. A total of 75 sinus-grafting procedures were performed and 89 implants were placed in 66 patients, 24 males and 42 females, with mean age 67.9 ± 10.64 years (range 43−84 years). Nineteen subjects were smokers. The mean follow-up period was 93.33 ± 54.71 months (range 14−240 months). Clinical and radiographical evaluations were performed. Graft height and width were measured at baseline and at the latest follow-up. Results. Mesiodistal and vertical resorption averaged 9.3 ± 20.7% (standard deviation), and 5.04 ± 9.9% of the postoperative size, respectively, considering the graft as the unit. Linear regression analysis showed that graft resorption in both the vertical and the mesiodistal dimension is independent of the follow-up time. Conversely, there was a trend for greater resorption when increasing the postoperative graft size, in both vertical (p = 0.001) and horizontal (p = 0.007) dimensions. When grouping the dimensional changes by graft particle size (only small (<300 μm) particles, combination of small and medium (>500 μm)/large (>1000 μm) particles, and only medium/large particles), there was a trend for greater resorption associated with smaller particles, but it was not significant; neither in the mesiodistal nor in the vertical dimension (p = 0.17 and p = 0.25, respectively). No implant was lost during the observation period. In conclusion, the transcrestal technique for maxillary sinus augmentation documented a high level of predictability. The low clinical morbidity and the contextual dental implant positioning is clinically useful in relation to a significant reduction of the time required for implant restoration, a consistent decrease of the number of surgical phases, and a cost-effectiveness approach for the rehabilitation. The graft resorption pattern in all cases was compatible with persistent implant protection and support.

Abstract
Maxillary sinus grafting is generally a safe procedure. However, intraoperative complications, as well as early and late postoperative complications, may occur. Included in the latter group are graft infections that can be triggered by peri-implantitis. The aim of the present study was to report three cases of late maxillary sinus graft infections and to histologically evaluate the effects of peri-implantitis in the grafted area. In peri-implantitis cases in grafted sinuses, the sole removal of the implant along with accompanying debridement of the infected area may not be sufficient to resolve the infection, and a more-aggressive treatment may be necessary.

Abstract
This meta-analysis aimed to evaluate postoperative pain (POP) following root canal filling (RCF) with gutta-percha/bioceramic sealer (BCS) vs. gutta-percha/traditional sealer (TS) techniques. Electronic databases were searched for randomized trials. Subgroup analyses were performed for analgesic intake, flare-ups, postoperative time (24/48 h), pulp status, and retreatment. The search yielded 682 records, and nine studies were selected. BCS was associated with significantly lower POP vs. TS at 24 h (P = 0.04) and 48 h (P = 0.0005). In addition, non-significant trends favoring BCS for analgesic intake at 24 h (P = 0.14), flare-ups (P = 0.24) and obturation techniques at 24 h (P = 0.41) and 48 h (P = 0.33), non-significant trends for lower POP with TS vs. BCS 24 h and 48 h in vital teeth (P = 0.50, P = 0.18, respectively), and for lower POP with BCS vs. TS in non-vital teeth at 24 h and 48 h (P = 0.16, P = 0.84, respectively). POP was numerically lower with TS vs. BCS at 24 h (P = 0.65) and 48 h after retreatment (P = 0.59). Moreover, POP did not vary between fillers when the treatment was over single (P = 0.28) or multiple visits (P = 0.50). BCS was associated with significantly lower short-term POP, and with a trend for lower analgesic intake and flare-up incidence, as compared to TS.

Abstract
Inserting zygomatic implants is a challenging surgery and requires special care and great precision. Piezoelectric surgery offers several advantages: more precise bone cutting with improved intraoperative visibility and a low temperature increase. The aim of this case-control study was to evaluate whether ultrasonic instruments can be as effective as standard drilling instruments for zygomatic implant surgery in terms of clinical outcomes. Ninety-two patients with atrophic maxilla were included in the study. Implant sites were prepared with the ultrasonic technique (test group = 47 patients) or traditional drilling (control group = 45 patients). In total, 368 zygomatic implants were inserted (202 with the extrasinus technique, 77 with the sinus slot technique, and 89 with the Brånemark technique). Complete arch provisional prostheses were delivered 3 to 5 hours after the surgical operations. The mean follow-up after surgery was 24 months (range = 12-32 months). The primary outcome evaluations were based on implant survival rates and postoperative complications. Operative time and surgeon's stress were evaluated as secondary outcomes. Implant survival rate was 100% in the test and 98.89% in the control group. Postoperative complications were seen in 9 patients (4 in the test and 5 in the control group); the difference was not statistically significant. Operative time was longer in the test group; however, surgeons were more comfortable using ultrasonic instruments. Within the limitations of this preliminary study, the ultrasonic technique was a feasible alternative to traditional drilling for zygomatic implant surgery.

Abstract
Background: Platelet concentrates are biological, autologous products obtained from the patient’s whole blood, consisting of a supraphysiological concentration of platelets and growth factors, that have proved beneficial in different applications in the medical and dental fields. They are used in several medical and dental applications to enhance tissue healing. Previous evidence shows that platelet concentrates may be beneficial in patients with compromised systemic conditions, in which the healing process is impaired. Aim: To evaluate the 5-year clinical outcome of implant treatment using acid-etched implants with calcium ions-modified surface in association with plasma rich in growth factors, in patients with systemic diseases of a different nature. Methods: Charts of 99 medically compromised patients, who had received a total of 224 dental implants from January 2013 to June 2013, were retrospectively evaluated. Patients were divided into four groups, according to their condition: diabetes (n = 39 patients), osteoporosis (n = 36), lupus erythematosus systemic (n = 5), rheumatoid arthritis (n = 19). The main outcomes were implant survival, marginal bone level (MBL) change and complications throughout follow-up. Results: Mean follow-up was 63.06 ± 1.90 months (range 60.1 to 66.4 months). In total, eight implants failed in 6 diabetic patients and 4 in 3 patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Overall 5-year implant survival was 94.6%. In total, 30 complications occurred in 24 patients, mostly transient, and no severe adverse event occurred. Overall MBL change was 0.45 ± 0.12 mm, with no significant differences among groups. Conclusions: In the present sample of medically compromised patients, rehabilitation with calcium ions-modified surface implants associated with plasma rich in growth factors proved to be a safe and effective treatment. The satisfactory results achieved after 5-year follow-up are comparable to those historically reported for healthy patients.

Abstract
The implant macrogeometry and thread profile represent one of the most important factors for a successful achievement of primary stability during the positioning procedure. The aim of the present investigation was to evaluate the insertion torque (IT), removal torque (RT) and Implant stability Quotient (ISQ) of two different implant macrogeometry and thread profile on solid rigid polyurethane model. Two different implants macrogeometries were tested: K2 (Group I) with 11° angle, 1.17 mm pitch and self-cutting V thread profile and K3 (Group II) implants with 30° angle, 0.71 mm pitch and spyral thread profile. A total of 120 specimens (n = 60 for each group) were positioned into different conditions of solid rigid polyurethane blocks. The insertion torque (IT), removal torque (RT) and ISQ were measured for each specimen. All specimens achieved the positioning into solid rigid polyurethane blocks for both of groups with no loss of stability. A significantly higher IT, RT and ISQ were detected in Group II (p < 0.05). In both groups the mean values for IT, RT and ISQ appeared promising from a clinical point of view. In spite of different macrogeometry and thread profile, both implant types achieved high primary stability on solid rigid polyurethane block to support the functional loading for a clinical application.

Abstract
The dental implant primary stability and micromovement absence represent critical factor for dental implant osseointegration. The aim of the present in vitro investigation was to simulate the bone response on different polyurethane densities the effect of self-tapping threads and round apex implant geometry. A total of 40 implants were positioned in D1, D2, D3 and D4 polyurethane block densities following a calibrated drilling protocol. The Insertion, removal Torque and resonance frequency analysis (RFA) means were calculated. All experimental conditions showed insertion torque values >30 Ncm. A significant higher insertion torque, removal and RFA was present in D1 polyurethane. Similar evidences were evidenced for D3 and D4. The effectiveness of the present study suggested a valuable clinical advantage for self-tapping threads and round apex implant using, such as in case of reduced bone density in the posterior maxilla

Abstract
For decades, the histologic evidence about osseointegration and the bone-implant interface has been discussed in the literature. In this review, the effectiveness of dental implants retrieved for different causes was evaluated. A literature search was performed in databases for papers about implants retrieved from humans published by the Implant Retrieval Center of the University of Chieti-Pescara, Italy. Sixty-eight articles were selected into categories based on topics. The data indicated high level of bone-to-implant contact, lamellar bone close to the surface, roughness related to an increased bone response, organized and remodeled bone after loading, and peri-implant interfaces subjected to a continuous dynamic function.

Abstract
The implant primary stability is a fundamental condition for avoiding implant micro-motions that might result in fibrous encapsulation; its achievement is facilitated by macro- and micro-geometry of the implant, and by the bone density and architecture at the intended implant site. The aim was to evaluate an osteocondensing drilling protocol for dental implant positioning compared to standard protocol on polyurethane block. A total of 40 implants, 20 for each osteocondensing group (Test) and 20 for standard drilling group (Control), were positioned. Insertion torque (IT), removal torque (RT), and Periotest were measured. A IT, RT, and Periotest significant difference was present in favor of the implant osteocondensing protocol. The results suggested that osteocondensing protocol represents a useful technique for implant placement in poor density bone.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare osseointegration and marginal bone level at implants placed in osteotomies prepared with either conventional drills or a piezoelectric device. MATERIAL AND METHODS Three months after the extraction of all mandibular premolars and first molars, two recipient sites were selected. The osteotomies were randomly prepared with either conventional drills (drill sites) or a piezoelectric device (piezoelectric sites). Implants were installed and a submerged healing was allowed. The animals were euthanized in groups of six after 4 and 8 weeks of healing. Biopsies were obtained for histological preparation. Coronal level of osseointegration (bone level) and bone-to-implant contact percentage (BIC%) were evaluated. RESULTS After 4 weeks of healing, the bone level was 0.6 ± 0.9 mm for the piezoelectric sites and 1.6 ± 0.7 mm for the drill sites (p = 0.173). After 8 weeks, the respective measures were 0.9 ± 0.3 mm and 1.0 ± 1.1 mm (p = 0.917). After 4 weeks of healing, a new bone apposed onto the implant surface was found at fractions of 54.9 ± 6.7% and 55.1 ± 16.6% for the piezoelectric and the drill sites, respectively (p = 0.674). The respective total bone fractions, including new and old bone, was 64.0 ± 4.8% and 63.4 ± 20.4% (p = 0.917). After 8 weeks, a new bone increased to 67.4 ± 6.7% and 62.9 ± 12.5% for the piezoelectric and the drill sites, respectively (p = 0.463). The respective total bone fractions were 70.4 ± 5.5% and 67.8 ± 12.1% (p = 0.753). CONCLUSIONS The use of a piezoelectric device for implant site preparation is a safe procedure that allows a proper integration since the early periods of healing similar to that observed using conventional drills.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate histologically the early healing at implants installed with different insertion torques MATERIAL AND METHODS: Three months after the extraction of the mandibular premolars and of the first molars, two implants were installed monolaterally in the premolar and two in the molar regions of the edentulous alveolar ridge of twelve dogs. The recipient sites were prepared using drills of different diameter to obtain insertion torque of different values, i.e., 30 Ncm (control) or ~ 70 Ncm (test) in the premolar region, and < 10 Ncm (test) or ~ 50 Ncm (control) in the molar region. Six animals were euthanized after 4 weeks and six after 8 weeks of healing. Histological analyses were performed, and the Wilcoxon test was applied for statistical analyses. RESULTS After 4 weeks of healing, in the premolar region, the new bone in contact with the implant surface was 65.0 ± 4.6% and 53.9 ± 13.5% at the ~ 30-Ncm and ~ 70-Ncm sites, respectively (p = 0.075). In the premolar region, new bone proportions were 51.4 ± 17.0% and 67.3 ± 7.0% at the < 10-Ncm and ~ 50-Ncm sites, respectively (p = 0.046). After 8 weeks of healing, in the premolar region, new bone reached fractions of 77.7 ± 16.2% at the ~ 30-Ncm sites, and 68.3 ± 12.1% at the ~ 70-Ncm sites (p = 0.028). In the molar region, new bone presented proportions of 70.2 ± 6.4% at the < 10-Ncm sites and 76.2 ± 9.4% at the ~ 50-Ncm sites (p = 0.173). CONCLUSIONS The insertion torque influenced the osseointegration of implants. Higher values of bone-to-implant contact percentages were registered for insertion torques of ~ 30 Ncm and ~ 50 Ncm. Implants inserted with torque < 10 Ncm became integrated with an optimal osseointegration.

Abstract
Background: The aim of the present review was to assess the histological and histomorphometrical data from the paper published by our Laboratory on peri-implant bone in dental implants in different loading conditions. Methods: The papers published in different implant loading conditions, in dental implants retrieved from humans, and in the Hard Tissues Research Center of the University of Chieti-Pescara, Italy, were screened on MEDLINE/PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and other electronic databases until 31 December 2018. Only articles that reported the histological and histomorphometrical values of the Bone-Implant Contact (BIC) were selected. Results: The system selection provided a total of 155 papers. The manuscripts included for the narrative review were 57. These papers provided histological and histomorphometrical data. Conclusions: The bone remodeling around dental implants was found to be a dynamic process; loading changed the microstructure of the peri-implant bone; and implants were found to provide a successful function, over several decades, with different range of degrees of BIC in vivo (varying from a little more than 30% to a little more than 90%). Loaded implants presented a 10%-12% higher BIC values when compared to submerged, unloaded implants, and rougher surfaces had, on average, about a 10% higher BIC than machined surfaces.

Abstract
Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate, in polyurethane foam sheets, the primary implant stability of a NanoShort implant compared to a self-condenser implant and to a standard, conventional implant. Materials and Methods: Three implant designs were evaluated in the present in vitro investigation: The Test implant (NanoShort), the Control A implant (self-condenser), and the Control B implant (standard design). The study was conducted by comparing the insertion torque values, the pull-out strength values, and the resonance frequency analysis (RFA) values of the Test and Control A and B implants inserted in polyurethane foam models of different thicknesses and densities. The foam densities were 10, 20, and 30 pounds per cubic foot (pcf). Three thicknesses of polyurethane foams (1, 2, 3 mm) were evaluated for a total of 640 experimental sites. Results: The Pearson correlation showed a moderate/strong correlation between all study groups (r > 0.3) for insertion torque and pull-out strength levels. Increased stability of the Test implants was obtained in 3 mm polyurethane sheets. The 2.5 and 3.5 mm Test implants presented good stability in 3 mm polyurethane sheets of 20–30 pcf densities. The Control implants showed better results compared to the Test implants in 1, 2, and 3 mm polyurethane sheets with densities of 10, 20, and 30 pcf. Conclusions: The NanoShort dental implant evaluated in this in vitro study showed a high level of stability in some experimental conditions, and could represent a useful tool, especially in the posterior mandible, as an alternative to vertical augmentation procedures.

Abstract
The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effect of air polishing on the implant abutment surface using different abrasive powders: sodium bicarbonate and amino acid glycine. Fifteen grade III machined surface titanium disks with 8-mm diameter and 2-mm thickness were divided in 3 groups of 5 samples each and subjected to air polishing for 20 seconds with an Ultrajet Flex air-abrasive device and a distinct prophylaxis protocol: air and water (G1); air, water, and sodium bicarbonate (G2); and air, water; and amino acid glycine (G3). After the air polishing, the average roughness (Ra) of the samples was measured using an optical profilometer, and the obtained data were statistically analyzed. We found that G1 and G3 had similar Ra, while Ra values for G2 were significantly higher. This study demonstrated that air-polishing powders containing glycine had less of an effect on the roughness of the surface of titanium disks compared with sodium bicarbonate powders. Future in vivo studies will be conducted to investigate the clinical relevance of the present results.

Abstract
Invasive cervical resorption (ICR) lesion is an aggressive form of tooth destruction that usually begins immediately below the epithelial attachment. It has been described as a purely inflammatory reaction that can be started by microorganism infection, or an aseptic resorptive process that can be secondarily infected. The potential etiologic and predisposing factors for ICR are orthodontic treatment, traumatic injuries, bleaching, periodontal therapy, and idiopathic factors. This case series with a 3-year follow-up shows that Class 2 ICR lesions have a good prognosis in 100% of cases. Class 3 ICR lesions should be considered at risk. However, in the authors' experience, the treatment of Class 3 ICR lesions is compatible with tooth maintenance.

Abstract
AIM To evaluate the growth of Human Gingival Fibroblasts (HGFs) cultured onto sample discs of CAD/CAM zirconia and veneering ceramic for zirconia by means of Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) analysis at different experimental times. METHODS A total of 26 experimental discs, divided into 2 groups, were used: Group A) CAD/CAM zirconia (3Y-TZP) discs (n=13); Group B) veneering ceramic for zirconia discs (n=13). HGFs were obtained from human gingival biopsies, isolated and placed in culture plates. Subsequently, cells were seeded on experimental discs at 7,5×10(3)/cm(2) concentration and cultured for a total of 7 days. Discs were processed for SEM observation at 3h, 24h, 72h and 7 days. RESULTS In Group A, after 3h, HGFs were adherent to the surface and showed a flattened profile. The disc surface covered by HGFs resulted to be wider in Group A than in Group B samples. At SEM observation, after 24h and 72h, differences in cell attachment were slightly noticeable between the groups, with an evident flattening of HGFs on both surfaces. All differences between Group A and group B became less significant after 7 days of culture in vitro. CONCLUSIONS SEM analysis of HGFs showed differences in terms of cell adhesion and proliferation, especially in the early hours of culture. Results showed a better adhesion and cell growth in Group A than in Group B, especially up to 72h in vitro. Differences decreased after 7 days, probably because of the rougher surface of CAD/CAM zirconia, promoting better cell adhesion, compared to the smoother surface of veneering ceramic.
