Abstract
BACKGROUND Despite the widespread impact of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (coronavirus disease 2019, COVID-19) and vaccination in South Korea, our understanding of kidney diseases following these events remains limited. We aimed to address this gap by investigating the characteristics of glomerular diseases following the COVID-19 infection and vaccination in South Korea. METHODS Data from multiple centers were used to identify de novo glomerulonephritis (GN) cases with suspected onset following COVID-19 infection or vaccination. Retrospective surveys were used to determine the COVID-19-related histories of patients who were initially not implicated. Bayesian structural time series and autoregressive integrated moving average models were used to determine causality. RESULTS Glomerular diseases occurred shortly after the infection or vaccination. The most prevalent postinfection GN was podocytopathy (42.9%), comprising primary focal segmental glomerulosclerosis and minimal change disease, whereas postvaccination GN mainly included immunoglobulin A nephropathy (IgAN; 57.9%) and Henoch-Schönlein purpura nephritis (HSP; 15.8%). No patient progressed to end-stage kidney disease. Among the patients who were initially not implicated, nine patients with IgAN/HSP were recently vaccinated against COVID-19. The proportion of glomerular diseases changed during the pandemic in South Korea, with an increase in acute interstitial nephritis and a decrease in pauci-immune crescentic GN. CONCLUSION This study showed the characteristics of GNs following COVID-19 infection or vaccination in South Korea. Understanding these associations is crucial for developing effective patient management and vaccination strategies. Further investigation is required to fully comprehend COVID-19's impact on GN.

Abstract
A for-cause biopsy is performed to diagnose the cause of allograft dysfunction in kidney transplantation. We occasionally encounter ambiguous biopsy results in symptomatic kidney transplant recipients. Yet, the allograft survival outcome in symptomatic recipients with nonspecific allograft biopsy findings remains unclear. The purpose of this study was to analyze the impact of nonspecific for-cause biopsy findings in symptomatic kidney transplant recipients. We retrospectively collected records from 773 kidney transplant recipients between January 2008 and October 2021. The characteristics of transplant recipients with nonspecific findings in the first for-cause biopsy were analyzed. Nonspecific allograft biopsy findings were defined as other biopsy findings excluding rejection, borderline rejection, calcineurin inhibitor toxicity, infection, glomerulonephritis, and diabetic nephropathy. The graft outcome was compared between recipients who had never undergone a for-cause biopsy and those who had a first for-cause biopsy with nonspecific findings. The graft survival in recipients with nonspecific for-cause biopsy findings was comparable to that in recipients who did not require the for-cause biopsy before and after propensity score matching. Even in symptomatic kidney transplant recipients, nonspecific allograft biopsy findings might not be a poor prognostic factor for allograft survival compared to recipients who did not require the for-cause biopsy.

Abstract
We investigated the simultaneous influence of expectation and experience on metacontrol, which we define as the instantiation of context-specific control states. These states could entail heightened control states in preparation for frequent task switching or lowered control states for task repetition. Specifically, we examined whether "expectations" regarding future control demands prompt proactive metacontrol, while "experiences" with items associated with specific control demands facilitate reactive metacontrol. In Experiment 1, we utilized EEG with a high temporal resolution to differentiate between brain activities associated with proactive and reactive metacontrol. We successfully observed cue-locked and image-locked ERP patterns associated with proactive and reactive metacontrol, respectively, supporting concurrent instantiation of two metacontrol modes. In Experiment 2, we focused on individual differences to investigate the modulatory role of working memory capacity (WMC) in the concurrent instantiation of two metacontrol modes. Our findings revealed that individuals with higher WMC exhibited enhanced proactive metacontrol, indicated by smaller response time variability (RTV). Additionally, individuals with higher WMC showed a lower tendency to rely on reactive metacontrol, indicated by a smaller item-specific switch probability (ISSP) effect. In conclusion, our results suggest that proactive and reactive metacontrol can coexist, but their interplay is influenced by individuals' WMC. Higher WMC promotes the use of proactive metacontrol while attenuating reliance on reactive metacontrol. This study provides insights into the interplay between proactive and reactive metacontrol and highlights the impact of WMC on their concurrent instantiation.

Abstract
Campylobacter jejuni is a major cause of foodborne illnesses worldwide and is primarily transmitted to humans through contaminated poultry meat. To control this pathogen, it is critical to understand its cold tolerance because poultry products are usually distributed in the cold chain. However, there is limited information regarding how this thermotolerant, microaerophilic pathogen can survive in cold and aerobic environments in the poultry cold chain. In this study, we investigated the cold tolerance of C. jejuni by measuring the viability of 90 C. jejuni strains isolated from retail raw chicken at 4 °C under aerobic and microaerobic conditions. Despite the microaerophilic nature of C. jejuni, under aerobic conditions, C. jejuni exhibited higher viability at 4 °C and required an extended inactivation time compared to microaerobic conditions. Some strains were highly tolerant to refrigeration temperatures and exhibited increased survival at 4 °C. These cold-tolerant strains mostly belonged to multilocus sequence typing (MLST) clonal complex (CC)-21 and CC-443, indicating that cold tolerance is associated with the phylogeny of C. jejuni. Notably, cold-tolerant strains had an increased probability of illness and were more likely to cause human infections due to their extended survival on refrigerated chicken meat compared to those sensitive to cold stress. Furthermore, the majority of cold-tolerant strains exhibited elevated aerotolerance, indicating that cold tolerance is related to aerotolerance. These findings suggest that refrigeration of chicken meat under aerobic conditions may not be effective at controlling C. jejuni and that cold-tolerant C. jejuni can pose an increased risk to food safety.

Abstract
Tuberculous pericarditis is an extrapulmonary manifestation of tuberculosis that is most commonly associated with pericardial thickening, effusion, and calcification. We present a case of tuberculous pericarditis mimicking a malignant pericardial tumor in a 77-year-old male. CT revealed an irregular and nodular pericardial thickening. MRI revealed high signal intensity on T1-weighted fat-suppressed images and peripheral rim enhancement after gadolinium administration. MRI can be helpful in determining the differential diagnoses in cases of tuberculous pericarditis with nonspecific imaging findings.

Abstract
Background Comorbidities may influence the levels of blood-based biomarkers for Alzheimer's disease (AD). We investigated whether differences in risk factors or comorbid conditions might explain the discordance between clinical diagnosis and biomarker classifications in a multi-ethnic cohort of elderly individuals. Aims To evaluate the relationship of medical conditions and other characteristics, including body mass index (BMI), vascular risk factors, and head injury, with cognitive impairment and blood-based biomarkers of AD, phosphorylated tau (P-tau 181, P-tau 217), in a multi-ethnic cohort. Methods Three-hundred individuals, aged 65 and older, were selected from a prospective community-based cohort for equal representation among three racial/ethnic groups: non-Hispanic White, Hispanic/Latino and African American/Black. Participants were classified into four groups based on absence (Asym) or presence (Sym) of cognitive impairment and low (NEG) or high (POS) P-tau 217 or P-tau 181 levels, determined previously in the same cohort: (Asym/NEG, Asym/POS, Sym/NEG, Sym/POS). We examined differences in individual characteristics across the four groups. We performed post-hoc analysis examining the differences across biomarker and cognitive status. Results P-tau 217 or P-tau 181 positive individuals had lower BMI than P-tau negative participants, regardless of symptom status. Symptomatic and asymptomatic participants did not differ in terms of BMI. BMI was not a mediator of the effect of P-tau 217 or P-tau 181 on dementia. Frequencies of other risk factors did not differ between the four groups of individuals. Conclusions Participants with higher levels of P-tau 217 or P-tau 181 consistent with AD had lower BMI regardless of whether the individual was symptomatic. These findings suggest that weight loss may change with AD biomarker levels before onset of cognitive decline. They do not support BMI as a confounding variable. Further longitudinal studies could explore the relationship of risk factors with clinical diagnoses and biomarkers.

Abstract
Lumbar decompressive laminectomy is a standard treatment for degenerative lumbar spinal stenosis, but in some cases, can lead to iatrogenic spondylolysis and delayed segmental instability. Iatrogenic spondylolysis occurs in most cases in pars interarticularis, but rare cases have also been reported, pediculolysis in pedicle and laminolysis in lamina. Minimally invasive spine surgery (MIS) is known to have a low risk of developing these iatrogenic spondylolyses, and unilateral biportal endoscopy is the MIS that has been drawing attention. We present a case of a 72-year-old female who was diagnosed with L4-5 unstable non-isthmic spondylolisthesis and severe right central disc extrusion 10 weeks after UBE assisted unilateral laminotomy for bilateral decompression (ULBD) at the consecutive segments of L3-4 and L4-5. Pre-operative imaging studies revealed severe central stenosis without spondylolisthesis at L3-L4 and L4-L5 along with L4-L5 facet tropism. She was managed by anterior lumbar interbody fusion and cement augmented pedicle screw fixation, which resulted in the complete resolution of her clinical and neurologic symptoms.

Abstract
This study aimed to develop a mathematical model for the survival of Clostridium perfringens in hamburgers and sandwiches and to evaluate their microbial risk. The primary model was developed in hamburgers using 4 strains of C. perfringens at 5, 10, 15, 25 and 37 °C, and the kinetic parameters of the primary model were fitted well with the Weibull model (R 2 ≥ 0.95). The secondary model was developed and validated in hamburgers and sandwiches using the Davey model, which was evaluated by B f , A f , and RMSE values within the acceptable range. A probabilistic risk model was developed and simulated using @Risk program to estimate the probability of infection (P inf ) of C. perfringens based on the data on prevalence (n = 100), time, temperature, and consumption of hamburgers and sandwiches (150.00 ± 20.96 g). Based on the simulation model, the mean C. perfringens exposure dose was 0.00976 CFU/g, and the estimated mean P inf was 1.78 × 10-13, which was very low in comparison with the current available data. The proposed model and the result can thus be useful to establish risk management options and microbial criteria for C. perfringens contamination in hamburgers and sandwiches. Abstract
Chordomas are rare, locally aggressive bone malignancies with poor prognoses. However, those with minimal or no bone involvement are more easily resectable because of their well-delineated margins and thus have better prognoses. Such extraosseous chordomas of the spine are localized both intradurally and extradurally. Only a few case reports have focused on extraosseous, extradural spinal chordomas. Radiologically, this type of chordoma has a dumbbell shape; however, dumbbell-shaped spinal tumors are traditionally thought to be neurogenic tumors (i.e., schwannomas or neurofibromas). We herein report a unique case involving a woman with a dumbbell-shaped extraosseous chordoma protruding predominantly into the retropharyngeal space. A 44-year-old woman presented for evaluation of a left submandibular mass. A T2-hyperintense, gadolinium-enhancing mass was found in her cervical spinal canal, protruding through the C2/3 neural foramen into the retropharyngeal space with minimal vertebral involvement. The initial diagnosis was a neurogenic tumor, most likely a schwannoma. After subtotal removal, the pathologic diagnosis was a chordoma. Because chordomas and schwannomas have significantly different prognoses, caution is warranted when a dumbbell-shaped tumor is identified in the spine with minimal or no vertebral deterioration on radiology. This report also provides the first thorough review of extraosseous dumbbell-shaped intraspinal–extraspinal chordomas.

Abstract
The objective of the study was to develop a predictive model of Salmonella spp. growth in pasteurized liquid egg white (LEW) and to estimate the salmonellosis risk using the baseline model and scenario analysis. Samples were inoculated with six strains of Salmonella, and bacterial growth was observed during storage at 10–37 °C. The primary models were developed using the Baranyi model for LEW. For the secondary models, the obtained specific growth rate (μmax) and lag phase duration were fitted to a square root model and Davey model, respectively, as functions of temperature (R2 ≥ 0.98). For μmax, the values were satisfied within an acceptable range (Af, Bf: 0.70–1.15). The probability of infection (Pinf) due to the consumption of LEW was zero in the baseline model. However, scenario analysis suggested possible salmonellosis for the consumption of LEW. Because Salmonella spp. proliferated much faster in LEW than in egg white (EW) during storage at 20 and 30 °C (p < 0.01), greater Pinf may be obtained for LEW when these products are stored at the same conditions. The developed predictive model can be applied to the risk management of Salmonella spp. along the food chain, including during product storage and distribution.

Abstract
The two primary mechanisms by which iodinated contrast media (CM) causes contrast-induced acute kidney injury (CIAKI) are the hemodynamic effect causing intrarenal vasoconstriction and the tubular toxic effect causing acute tubular necrosis. Inhibition of 15-hydroxyprostaglandin dehydrogenase (15-PGDH), which degrades prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), promotes tissue repair and regeneration in many organs. PGE2 causes intrarenal arterial vasodilation. In this study, we investigated whether a 15-PGDH inhibitor can act as a candidate for blocking these two major mechanisms of CIAKI. We established a CIAKI mouse model by injecting a 10 gram of iodine per body weight (gI/kg) dose of iodixanol into each mouse tail vein. A 15-PGDH inhibitor (SW033291), PGE1, or PGE2 were administered to compare the renal functional parameters, histologic injury, vasoconstriction, and renal blood flow changes. In addition, human renal proximal tubular epithelial cells were cultured in a CM-treated medium. SW033291, PGE1, or PGE2 were added to compare any changes in cell viability and apoptosis rate. CIAKI mice that received SW033291 had lower serum levels of creatinine, neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin, and kidney injury molecule 1 (p < 0.001); lower histologic injury score and TUNEL positive rates (p < 0.001); and higher medullary arteriolar area (p < 0.05) and renal blood flow (p < 0.001) than CM + vehicle group. In cell culture experiments, Adding SW033291 increased the viability rate (p < 0.05) and decreased the apoptosis rate of the tubular epithelial cells (p < 0.001). This 15-PGDH inhibitor blocks the two primary mechanisms of CIAKI, intrarenal vasoconstriction and tubular cell toxicity, and thus has the potential to be a novel prophylaxis for CIAKI. Abstract
PURPOSE The establishment of a preclinical model of the abscopal effect on hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and evaluation of whether the hypofractionated radiation therapy (RT) multitumor Hepa1-6 mouse HCC model could be used to suppress nonradiated tumor mass was performed in this study. METHODS AND MATERIALS Hepa1-6 mouse liver cancer cell lines were used to form tumors. Immunogenicity was analyzed using ELISpot and immune cell labeled antibody. Interferon (IFN) β expression was confirmed through polymerase chain reaction. RESULTS After investigation, the intratumoral transcription of type Ⅰ IFN increased by 2-fold. The antitumor immune response to Hepa 1-6 cells induced by radiation was increased. Moreover, the influx of activated CD8+ T cells was increased in nonirradiated tumors. The number of dendritic cells and activation status were evaluated by flow cytometry on the second day after irradiation. Flow cytometry revealed a significantly increased dendritic cell population expressing the CD11c molecule in tumor-draining lymph nodes. Furthermore, because irradiation leads to adaptation of immune resistance of tumor cells against RT, we sought to elucidate a potent tool to overcome the resistance and confirm the ability of PD-L1 antibody to survive late RT resistance. CONCLUSIONS The immunologic mechanism of the abscopal effect was revealed and the application of PD-L1 inhibitor successfully performed as a breakthrough in late RT resistance in the Hepa1-6 tumor model.

Abstract
In the present study, we demonstrated the marked activity of SW033291, an inhibitor of 15-hydoxyprostaglandin dehydrogenase (15-PGDH), in preventing acute kidney injury (AKI) in a murine model of ischemia-reperfusion injury. AKI due to ischemic injury represents a significant clinical problem. PGE2 is vasodilatory in the kidney, but it is rapidly degraded in vivo due to catabolism by 15-PGDH. We investigated the potential of SW033291, a potent and specific 15-PGDH inhibitor, as prophylactic treatment for ischemic AKI. Prophylactic administration of SW033291 significantly increased renal tissue PGE2 levels and increased post-AKI renal blood flow and renal arteriole area. In parallel, prophylactic SW033291 decreased post-AKI renal morphology injury scores and tubular apoptosis and markedly reduced biomarkers of renal injury that included blood urea nitrogen, creatinine, neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin, and kidney injury molecule-1. Prophylactic SW033291 also reduced post-AKI induction of proinflammatory cytokines, high-mobility group box 1, and malondialdehyde. Protective effects of SW033291 were mediated by PGE2 signaling, as they could be blocked by pharmacological inhibition of PGE2 synthesis. Consistent with activation of PGE2 signaling, SW033291 induced renal levels of both EP4 receptors and cAMP, along with other vasodilatory effectors, including AMP, adenosine, and the adenosine A2A receptor. The protective effects of SW0333291 could largely be achieved with a single prophylactic dose of the drug. Inhibition of 15-PGDH may thus represent a novel strategy for prophylaxis of ischemic AKI in multiple clinical settings, including renal transplantation and cardiovascular surgery.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Various animal models have been introduced into the study of liver metastasis of colorectal cancer, but they have not been compared under the same conditions. The aim of this study was to identify an optimized mouse model that showed a high rate of hepatic metastasis and expression of clonal dynamics. MATERIALS AND METHODS Athymic nude mice (n=30) were divided into two equal groups for the creation of a splenic injection model (SIM) and surgically orthotopic implantation model (SOIM) of liver metastasis of colorectal cancer using HCT116 cells. Hepatic metastasis was confirmed by gross and microscopic examinations. Expression of MET transcriptional regulator MACC1 (MACC1) in colon cancer cell lines and metastatic tumors in the group with a higher liver metastasis rate was confirmed by quantitative reverse-transcription-polymerase chain reaction. RESULTS The observation time was significantly shorter for SIM than for SOIM (33.0±6.8 vs. 41.2±7.2 days, p<0.001). The rate of hepatic metastasis was significantly higher in SIM than in SOIM (76.9% vs. 38.4%, p=0.038). MACC1 was expressed in Colo201, HCT116, HT29, LS513, SW620, and WiDr cells but not in SW480 cells. All hepatic metastases in SIM mice expressed MACC1, and metastatic HCT116 cells had significantly greater expression than did the original HCT116 cells (p<0.001). CONCLUSION With a higher rate of hepatic metastasis with clonal dynamics in a shorter observation time than the SOIM, SIM appears to be a good animal model for identifying new targets and in drug development for colorectal cancer liver metastasis. SOIM should also be considered for the study of the full steps of metastasis.

Abstract
In this study, a stimulated-echo (STE) method was employed to robustify the cerebral vessel size estimation near air-tissue, bone-tissue interfaces, and large vessels. The proposed solution is to replace the relaxation rate change from gradient-echo (GRE) with that from STE with long diffusion time after the injection of an intravascular contrast agent, superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles. The corresponding diffusion length of STE is shorter than the length over which the unwanted macroscopic field inhomogeneities but is still longer than the correlation length of the fields induced by small vessels. Therefore, the unwanted field inhomogeneities are refocused, while preserving microscopic susceptibility contrast from cerebral vessels. The mean vessel diameter (dimensionless) derived from the diffusion-time-varying STE method was compared to the mean vessel diameter obtained by a conventional spin-echo (SE) and GRE combination based on Monte-Carlo proton diffusion simulations and in vivo rat experiments at 7 T. The in vivo mean vessel diameter from the MRI experiments was directly compared to available reference mouse brain vasculature obtained by a knife-edge scanning microscope (KESM), which is considered to be the gold standard. Monte-Carlo simulation revealed that SE and GRE-based MR relaxation rate changes (ΔR2 and ΔR2∗, respectively) can be enhanced using single STE-based MR relaxation rate change (ΔRSTE) by regulating diffusion time, especially for small vessels. The in vivo mean vessel diameter from the STE method demonstrated a closer agreement with that from the KESM compared to the combined SE and GRE method, especially in the olfactory bulb and cortex. This study demonstrates that STE relaxation rate changes can be used as consistent measures for assessing small cerebral microvasculature, where macroscopic field inhomogeneity is severe and signal contamination from adjacent large vessels is significant.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aims of this study were to clarify the activation of complement pathways in patients with lupus nephritis (LN), and to elucidate the association between these complement activation types and clinical outcomes. METHODS We enrolled 115 patients with biopsy-proven LN from 2003 to 2016 from the lupus cohort at the Busan Paik Hospital and the Jeju National University Hospital in Korea. The patients were divided into two groups based on the patterns of glomerular complements deposits. The presence of C1q, C4 and/or C3 deposits in the glomerulus was considered evidence for the activation of the classical pathway with or without alternative pathway activation (group 1, N = 93), and glomerular C3 deposition without C1q and C4 deposits was considered as a marker for the alternative pathway limited activation (group 2, N = 22). The study end point was progression of kidney disease defined as a ≥50% reduction in estimated glomerular filtration rate from baseline values or advancement to end-stage renal disease. RESULTS The mean estimated glomerular filtration rate and median urine protein-to-creatinine ratio of the patients were 85.7 ± 32.4 mL/min/1.73 m2 and 3.1 g/g, respectively, at the time of kidney biopsy. Forty-nine patients (43%) had nephrotic range of proteinuria. Compared to group 1 patients, those in group 2 were older, were more likely to be males and were more hypertensive. In addition, plasma C3 and C4 levels were significantly lower in group 1 patients compared to those in group 2. Moreover, anti-dsDNA concentration was significantly higher in group 1 patients compared to those in group 2. The mean follow-up time was 5.4 ± 3.4 years. The rates of response to one-year immunosuppressive treatment were poorer in group 2 patients compared to those in group 1. During the follow-up time, the progression of kidney disease was significantly higher in group 2 than in group 1 patients. CONCLUSION This study showed that there was alternative complement pathway limited activation in the renal tissue in a small number of patients with LN, and these patients had worse renal outcomes compared to patients with glomerular classical complement pathway activation with or without alternative pathway activation.

Abstract
Tetrahydrobiopterin (BH4) shows therapeutic potential as an endogenous target in cardiovascular diseases. Although it is involved in cardiovascular metabolism and mitochondrial biology, its mechanisms of action are unclear. We investigated how BH4 regulates cardiovascular metabolism using an unbiased multiple proteomics approach with a sepiapterin reductase knock-out (Spr-/-) mouse as a model of BH4 deficiency. Spr-/- mice exhibited a shortened life span, cardiac contractile dysfunction, and morphological changes. Multiple proteomics and systems-based data-integrative analyses showed that BH4 deficiency altered cardiac mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation. Along with decreased transcription of major mitochondrial biogenesis regulatory genes, including Ppargc1a, Ppara, Esrra, and Tfam, Spr-/- mice exhibited lower mitochondrial mass and severe oxidative phosphorylation defects. Exogenous BH4 supplementation, but not nitric oxide supplementation or inhibition, rescued these cardiac and mitochondrial defects. BH4 supplementation also recovered mRNA and protein levels of PGC1α and its target proteins involved in mitochondrial biogenesis (mtTFA and ERRα), antioxidation (Prx3 and SOD2), and fatty acid utilization (CD36 and CPTI-M) in Spr-/- hearts. These results indicate that BH4-activated transcription of PGC1α regulates cardiac energy metabolism independently of nitric oxide and suggests that BH4 has therapeutic potential for cardiovascular diseases involving mitochondrial dysfunction.

Abstract
Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare and highly aggressive neuroectodermal carcinoma arising from mechanoreceptor Merkel cells. Multiple MCCs are even rarer. We report a case of two independent MCCs simultaneously present in the cheek of a patient, which were effectively and esthetically treated using a cheek flap. Punch biopsy performed in a 60-year-old woman admitted with a chief complaint of two skin-colored hard nodules in her left cheek, accompanied by an itching sensation, was suggestive of MCC. Accordingly, we performed sentinel lymph node biopsy through the modified Blair incision under general anesthesia, in cooperation with the head and neck surgery department. The defect was covered with a cheek flap by slightly extending the existing incision following wide excision with a safety margin of 1 cm. This paper is significant in that it introduces an effective reconstruction technique that maintains function using a cheek flap for the management of this rare case. In addition, this paper is the first to classify multiple MCCs according to the time of onset. We believe that this paper presents an effective alternative reconstruction technique with sentinel node biopsy through the modified Blair incision.

Abstract
PURPOSE The diagnostic criteria of gastric intraepithelial neoplasia (IEN) are controversial across the world. We investigated how many discrepancies occur in the pathologic diagnosis of IEN and early gastric carcinoma in endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) specimens, and evaluated the reasons of the discordance. Materials and Methods We retrospectively reviewed 1,202 ESD specimens that were originally diagnosed as gastric IEN and early carcinoma at 12 institutions. RESULTS The final consensus diagnosis of carcinoma were 756 cases, which were originally 692 carcinomas (91.5%), 43 high-grade dysplasias (5.7%), 20 low-grade dysplasias (2.6%), and 1 others (0.1%), respectively. High- and low-grade dysplasia were finally made in 63 and 342 cases, respectively. The diagnostic concordance with the consensus diagnosis was the highest for carcinoma (91.5%), followed by low-grade dysplasia (86.3%), others (63.4%) and high-grade dysplasia (50.8%). The general kappa value was 0.83, indicating excellent concordance. The kappa values of individual institutions ranged from 0.74 to 1 and correlated with the proportion of carcinoma cases. The cases revised to a final diagnosis of carcinoma exhibited both architectural abnormalities and cytologic atypia. The main differential points between low- and high-grade dysplasias were the glandular distribution and glandular shape. Additional features such as the glandular axis, surface maturation, nuclear stratification and nuclear polarity were also important. CONCLUSION The overall concordance of the diagnosis of gastric IEN and early carcinoma in ESD specimens was excellent. It correlated with the proportion of carcinoma cases, demonstrating that the diagnostic criteria for carcinoma are more reproducible than those for dysplasia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aims of this study are to evaluate the usefulness of submucosal deformity pattern analysis with endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) for predicting the depth of invasion in early gastric cancer (EGC) and the treatment results of endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD). METHODS The endoscopic and EUS parameters of 345 patients with endoscopically suspected EGC who underwent endoscopic or surgical resection between July 2012 and May 2017 were retrospectively reviewed. All patients were classified into three categories as follows according to the morphologic type of submucosal deformity identified by EUS: (1) no submucosal deformity, (2) wedge-shaped deformity, and (3) arch-shaped deformity. The presence of an arch-shaped submucosal deformity on EUS and an active endoscopic ulcer or surrounding mucosal fold convergence/clubbing on conventional endoscopy were defined as suggestive of deep submucosal cancer invasion (SCI). RESULTS Upper location (p = 0.034) and the presence of an arch-shaped submucosal deformity on EUS (p < 0.001) were significant predictors of deep submucosal invasion, with the presence of an arch-shaped submucosal deformity showing the highest predictive value (odds ratio of 26.27). The overall diagnostic accuracy of EUS for predicting deep SCI was 83.5%, with a sensitivity of 84.0% and a specificity of 83.3%, which were significantly higher than those of conventional endoscopy. A larger lesion size and the presence of an arch-shaped submucosal deformity were significant factors associated with noncurative resection after ESD. CONCLUSIONS Submucosal deformity pattern analysis with EUS can provide more accurate information than conventional endoscopy for predicting deep SCI. The presence of an arch-shaped submucosal deformity on EUS was an effective predictor of deep SCI and noncurative resection.

Abstract
A ‘collision’ tumor refers to the existence of two different neoplasms within the same tumor. Sometimes, the term ‘biphasic tumor’ is also used. However, a ‘collision’ tumor is defined as the occurrence of two neoplasms within proximity of each other yet maintaining distinctly defined, separate boundaries. In contrast, a ‘biphasic’ tumor demonstrates two or more phenotypically distinct neoplastic cell populations merging within the same space. Here, we report a case of collision tumor associated with sarcomatoid eccrine porocarcinoma and basal cell carcinoma arising in a 57-year-old male patient.

Abstract
Endometrial cancer is the sixth most common cancer in women worldwide. Peroxiredoxins (PRDXs) are antioxidant enzymes that serve important roles in cell differentiation, proliferation, and apoptosis. In the present study, the potential associations between PRDX expression and endometrial cancer were investigated. The expression levels of various PRDX mRNAs were detected by semi-quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) in endometrial cancer tissues (n=26) and normal endometrial tissues (n=10). Additionally, the expression of PRDX isoforms was immunohistochemically examined in endometrial cancer tissues and adjacent normal endometrial tissues from 42 patients. Finally, the associations between high PRDX expression levels and clinicopathological features were examined in patients with endometrial cancer. Analysis of PRDX expression in endometrial cancer tissues and normal endometrial tissues by semi-quantitative RT-PCR showed that all PRDX isoforms had increased expression in the endometrial cancer tissues compared with that in the normal endometrium, and the differences in the expression levels of PRDX1 and PRDX3 between cancer and normal tissues were statistically significant (P=0.0015 and P=0.0134, respectively). Additionally, analysis of PRDX expression in endometrial cancer and paired normal endometrial tissues by immunohistochemistry showed strong cytoplasmic staining of PRDX3 and PRDX5 in cancer tissues, with high PRDX3 (25/42, 59.5%) and PRDX5 (32/42, 76.2%) appearing more frequently in endometrial cancer than in normal endometrial tissues (P=0.0001 and P=0.0023, respectively). Furthermore, high expression of PRDX5 was associated with advanced-stage endometrial cancer (P=0.0399). Although the 5-year survival rate was marginally higher in patients with low expression of PRDX3 and PRDX5, this result was not statistically significant. In summary, PRDX3 and PRDX5 are highly expressed in endometrial cancer and could be associated with advanced stage and poor prognosis. Therefore, these proteins may potentially be used as prognostic markers for endometrial cancer.

Abstract
Kaposiform hemangioendothelioma (KHE) is a locally aggressive vascular tumor that usually occurs in soft tissues of the extremity and rarely in the retroperitoneum. We report a unique case of isolated massive fetal ascites attributed to KHE, involving the retroperitoneum and multiple visceral organs, along with the Kasabach-Merritt phenomenon. We suspect that retroperitoneal KHE might have caused massive fetal ascites because of its high potential to invade the lymphatic vessels aggressively in the retroperitoneal space, which possibly permits intestinal lymph leakage into the peritoneal cavities.

Abstract
Nevus sebaceus is a hamartoma of the sebaceous gland that occurs congenitally, from which various secondary tumors can arise with a prevalence of 5%–6%. Benign neoplasms commonly arise from nevus sebaceous, but they have a very low malignant potential. Two neoplasms may occasionally arise within the same lesion, but it is rare for three or more neoplasms to occur in a nevus sebaceus simultaneously. A 61-year-old male patient was admitted to our hospital for a 4 cm×2.5 cm growing tumor in a verrucous form arising within a periauricular nevus sebaceus in the post auricle of the left ear that had developed 30 years earlier. The nodule was diagnosed as 3 different types of tumors: trichilemmoma, desmoplastic trichilemmoma, and basal cell carcinoma. To our knowledge, this is the first report of the coexistence of three different tumors arising from nevus sebaceous. It contain malignant neoplasm also. Surgeons should be aware of the need for close monitoring and early complete surgical excision of sebaceous nevus in order to improve patient outcomes.

Abstract
PURPOSE We investigated whether a chondrocyte-derived extracellular membrane (CDECM) could reduce postoperative scar formation in an experimental rabbit model of glaucoma filtration surgery. METHODS Thirty-six male New Zealand white rabbits underwent experimental glaucoma filtration surgeries on the right eye and were randomly divided into the following two treatment groups: the CDECM group was treated with subconjunctival injections of 0.1ml CDECM (25 mg/ml; n = 18 eyes), and the operation (OP) group was treated with subconjunctival injections of 0.1 ml balanced salt solution (n = 18 eyes). The left eyes were used as controls (n = 36 eyes). The effects of the CDECM on the experimental rabbit model were investigated using histopathological, immunochemical analyses and Western blotting analyses of the inflammation, fibrosis and angiogenesis. RESULTS On the 14th postoperative day, the eyes of the CDECM group displayed reduced vascularity and fibrosis compared with the OP group. The vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), CD31 and TNFβ immunostaining were also reduced in the CDECM group. The level of TNFα mRNA was increased in the OP group. On the 28th postoperative day, the eyes of the CDECM group also exhibited reduced vascularity and less inflammation and fibrosis than those of the OP group. The expressions of VEGF, CD31, macrophage, TNFβ and NF-κB p65 were also decreased in the CDECM group. The levels of TNFα mRNA significantly differ, and the level of matrix metallopeptidase 9 (MMP9) was increased in the OP group. To determine the specific upstream pathway that was associated with NF-κB activation due to glaucoma filtration surgery, we measured Akt, PKCs and MAPKs signaling. The phosphorylation of p38 MAPK was increased in the OP group, whereas this expression was decreased by CDECM treatment. CONCLUSIONS CDECM seems to suppress angiogenesis, inflammation and fibrosis, which were related to wound healing in the experimental rabbit model of glaucoma filtration surgery. This effect, resulting from the inhibition of NF-κB expression, may be the blocking of the p38 MAPK signaling pathway.

Abstract
A major goal of breast cancer research is to prevent the molecular events that lead to tumour metastasis. It is well-established that both cytoplasmic and mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (ROS) play important roles in cell migration and metastasis. Accordingly, this study examined the molecular mechanisms of the anti-metastatic effects of NecroX-5, a mitochondrial ROS scavenger. NecroX-5 inhibited lung cancer metastasis by ameliorating migration in a mouse model. In human cancer cells, the inhibition of migration by NecroX-5 is cell type-dependent. We observed that the effect of NecroX-5 correlated with a reduction in mitochondrial ROS, but mitochondrial ROS reduction by MitoQ did not inhibit cell migration. NecroX-5 decreased intracellular calcium concentration by blocking Ca2+ influx, which mediated the inhibition of cell migration, AKT downregulation and the reduction of mitochondrial ROS levels. However, the reduction of mitochondrial ROS was not associated with supressed migration and AKT downregulation. Our study demonstrates the potential of NecroX-5 as an inhibitor of breast cancer metastasis.

Abstract
Adjuvant chemotherapy is benefit for high-risk stage II and stage III colon cancer after curative resection. But, the optimal time between surgical and initiation of adjuvant chemotherapy remains unclear. Moreover, no study of efficacy with different lengths of adjuvant chemotherapy has appeared. This study was aimed to identify association between time (initiation and length) and oncological outcomes of adjuvant chemotherapy on the stages II and III colon cancer patients. A total of 406 high-risk stages II and III colon cancer patients were retrospectively enrolled in prospectively collected data. They were categorized into three groups representing chemotherapy initiation time: less than 4 weeks (group 1), 4 to 6 weeks (group 2), and more than 6 weeks (group 3). They were categorized into two groups representing chemotherapy length time : less than 200 days (group 1a) and more than 200 days (group 2a). The 5-year disease-free survival (DFS) rates were 74.97 % in group 1, 76.94 % in group 2, and 63.97 % in group 3 (p > 0.05). The 5-year DFS rates were 75.49 % in the group that received adjuvant chemotherapy within 6 weeks and 63.97 % in the group that received adjuvant chemotherapy >6 weeks (p = 0.0539). The 5-year DFS rates were 77.21 % in group 1a and 81.82 % in group 2a (p > 0.05). Adjuvant chemotherapy should be safely offered within 6 weeks after surgical excision in patients with colon cancer after considering the patient's general physical condition and hematological factors, even if the chemotherapy length is prolonged.

Abstract
A tropical gray leaf spot (GLS)-resistant line, YML 32, was crossed to a temperate GLS-susceptible line, Ye 478, to produce an F2:3 population for the identification of quantitative trait loci (QTL) associated with resistance to GLS. The population was evaluated for GLS disease resistance and flowering time at two locations in Yunnan province. Seven QTL using GLS disease scores and six QTL using flowering time were identified on chromosomes 2, 3, 4, 5, and 8 in the YML 32 × Ye 478 maize population. All QTL, except one identified on chromosome 2 using flowering time, were overlapped with the QTL for GLS disease scores. The results indicated that QTL for flowering time in this population strongly corresponded to QTL for GLS resistance. Among the QTL, qRgls.yaas-8-1/qFt.yaas-8 with the largest genetic effect accounted for 17.9 to 18.1 and 11.0 to 21.42% of variations for GLS disease scores and flowering time, respectively, and these should be very useful for improving resistance to GLS, especially in subtropical maize breeding programs. The QTL effects for resistance to GLS were predominantly additive in nature, with a dominance effect having been found for two QTL on the basis of joint segregation genetic analysis and QTL analysis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM The aim of this study was to evaluate the validity of the parameters of conventional white-light endoscopy and magnifying endoscopy with narrow-band imaging (MENBI) for the prediction of discrepancies between pre- and post-resectional histology in cases of gastric adenoma with low-grade dysplasia (LGD) that were diagnosed based on endoscopically biopsied specimens. METHODS The medical records of 266 lesions with gastric LGD that were diagnosed by endoscopic forceps biopsies were retrospectively reviewed. The Vienna classification was used for histologic diagnosis. These patients all underwent MENBI examinations followed by analyses of the incidence of histologic discrepancies and histologic heterogeneity. The relationship between white-light endoscopic/MENBI parameters and the presence of histologic discrepancies was also analyzed. RESULTS Discrepancies between the pre- and post-resectional histologies were found in 74 cases (27.9%). Among those cases, the histology was upgraded in 71 cases, whereas the histology was downgraded in three cases. The presence of erythema and positive MENBI findings were independent factors for the prediction of upgraded histologic discrepancies (P-values = 0.008, < 0.001, respectively). A positive MENBI finding yielded the highest predictive value, with a multivariate adjusted odds ratio of 42.46. Histologic heterogeneity in post-resectional specimens was found in 40.8% of cases with upgraded histologic discrepancies. CONCLUSIONS MENBI can provide more accurate information than white-light endoscopy for the prediction of pre- and post-resectional histologic discrepancies in biopsy-proven gastric LGD. Endoscopic resection is strongly recommended in cases with surface erythema on conventional white-light endoscopy or positive MENBI, irrespective of the lesion size.

Abstract
Background/Aims: The influence of the endoscopist on the polyp detection rate (PDR) is underappreciated in clinical practice. Moreover, flat lesions or lesions of the proximal colon are more difficult to detect. Here, we evaluated the differences in the PDR and the characteristics of detected polyps according to the experience of the colonoscopist. Methods: We collected data on 2,549 patients who underwent screening colonoscopy performed by three fellows. The PDR was calculated according to the percentage of patients who had at least one polyp (method A) and according to the percentage of detected lesions (method B). The primary outcome included the change in the PDR, and the secondary outcome included the change in the characteristics of the detected polyps with increasing experience of the colonoscopist. Results: No proportional correlation was found between the PDR and increasing experience in colonoscopy with method A; however, with method B, the PDR increased after 400 colonoscopies (p=0.0209). With method B, the detection rates of small polyps (<5 mm) (p=0.0015) and polyps in proximal sites (p=0.0050) increased after 300 colonoscopies. Conclusions: Our study demonstrated that the quality of a colonoscopy, measured by using the PDR, may increase when performed by experienced fellows.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Discrepancies in the clinicopathologic parameters pre- and post-endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) sometimes necessitate additional surgical resection. The aim of this study was to assess such discrepancies in clinicopathologic parameters before and after ESD in the context of reducing the risk of failure of curative ESD. METHODS Data on 712 early gastric cancer patients were prospectively collected from 12 university hospitals nationwide. The inclusion criteria were differentiated carcinoma <3 cm in size, no ulceration, submucosal invasion <500 μm, and no metastasis. Clinicopathologic factors were compared retrospectively. RESULTS The discrepancy rate was 20.1 % (148/737) and the most common cause of discrepancy was tumor size (64 cases, 8.7 %). Ulceration, undifferentiated histology, and SM2 invasion were found in 34 (4.6 %), 18 (2.4 %), and 51 cases (6.9 %), respectively. Lymphovascular invasion (LVI) was observed in 34 cases (4.6 %). Cases with lesions exceeding 3 cm in size showed more frequent submucosal invasion, an elevated gross morphology, and upper and middle locations (p < 0.05). In the cases with ulceration, depth of invasion (DOI) was deeper than in the cases without ulceration (p = 0.005). Differentiation was correlated with DOI and LVI (p = 0.021 and 0.007). DOI was correlated with tumor size, ulceration, differentiation, LVI, gross type, and location. There were statistically significant differences between mucosal cancer cases and submucosal cancer cases in tumor size, differentiation, ulceration, LVI, and location. CONCLUSIONS The overall discrepancy rate was 20.1 %. To reduce this rate, it is necessary to evaluate the DOI very cautiously, because it is correlated with other parameters. In particular, careful checking for SM-invasive cancer is required due to the high incidence of LVI irrespective of the depth of submucosal invasion.

Abstract
A subphrenic mass was noted on a surveillance computed tomography (CT) scan of a 65-year-old man who had achieved complete remission of oropharyngeal cancer after concurrent chemoradiotherapy. The mass was 3.2 cm in size and showed a multilobular enhancing pattern along the peritoneal lining. The patient was negative for hepatitis B surface antigen and anti-hepatitis C virus antibody. His carcinoembryonic antigen level was within the normal range. Contrast-enhanced CT revealed no mass in the liver. He underwent surgery, and a pale yellowish soft tumor measuring 3.8 × 3.2 × 1.2 cm was resected. Histologically, the tumor was confirmed to be a hepatocellular carcinoma. Currently, he is doing well, and has been followed up without any signs of recurrence.

Abstract
Kidney transplantation is the most desired modality of renal replacement therapy for patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). We have attempted to expand the organ donor pool through several methods, including the use of expanded donor criteria. Although previously transplanted kidneys are rarely reused, they can be suitable for transplantation into patients in need. We report a case of successful reuse of a previously transplanted kidney from a deceased donor by means of Luminex virtual crossmatching with the first donor and actual crossmatching with the second donor.

Abstract
Urokinase-type plasminogen activator (uPA) and uPA receptor (uPAR) are expressed in many tumors and have been reported to be correlated to protein expression and poor prognosis in malignant tumors. In a previous study, we reported on the selection of human single-chain variable fragment (scFv) A8 specific to uPA from phage-displayed human naïve scFv library. In this study, scFv A8 was converted to minibody form and evaluated for its functional ability on the uPA system involved in cellular signaling and cancer cell metastasis. A8 minibody increased enzyme activity of uPA and enhanced the migration and invasion of HT1080 colon cancer cells in a dose-dependent manner. A8 increased ERK phosphorylation, and enhanced migration was blocked by U0126, but not by LY0294002, SB2203580, and SP600125. A8 minibody also enhanced migration of MDA-MB231 by mediated expressing surface uPA, but not that of MCF-7 non-expressing surface uPA. Taken together, the A8 anti-uPA antibody is a uPA agonistic antibody, enhancing migration and invasion of cancer cells that express uPA via activation of ERK pathway.

Abstract
Purpose The purpose of this study was to identify the excision repair cross-complementation group 1 (ERCC1) as a predictive marker for FOLFOX adjuvant chemotherapy in stages II and III colon cancer patients. Methods A total of 166 high risk stages II and III colon cancer patients were retrospectively enrolled in this study, and data were collected prospectively. They underwent a curative resection followed by FOLFOX4 adjuvant chemotherapy. We analyzed ERCC1 expression in the primary colon tumor by using immunohistochemical staining. The oncological outcomes included the 5-year disease-free survival (DFS) rate. The DFS was analyzed by using the Kaplan-Meier method with the log-rank test. A Cox proportional hazard model was used for the prognostic analysis. Results ERCC1-positive expression was statistically significant in the older patients (P = 0.032). In the multivariate analysis, the prognostic factors for DFS were female sex (P = 0.016), N stage (P = 0.009), and postoperative carcinoembryonic antigen level (P = 0.001), but ERCC1 expression was not a statistically significant prognostic factor for DFS in the univariate analysis (P = 0.397). The 5-year DFS rate was not significantly associated with the ERCC1 expression in all patients (P = 0.396) or with stage III disease (P = 0.582). Conclusion We found that ERCC1 expression was not significantly correlated with the 5-year DFS as reflected by the oncologic outcomes in patients with high-risk stages II and III colon cancer treated with FOLFOX adjuvant chemotherapy.

Abstract
Experimental autoimmune uveoretinitis (EAU) is an autoimmune disease that models human uveitis. Caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE), a phenolic compound isolated from propolis, possesses anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties. CAPE demonstrates therapeutic potential in several animal disease models through its ability to inhibit NF-κB activity. To evaluate these therapeutic effects in EAU, we administered CAPE in a model of EAU that develops after immunization with interphotoreceptor retinal-binding protein (IRBP) in B10.RIII and C57BL/6 mice. Importantly, we found that CAPE lessened the severity of EAU symptoms in both mouse strains. Notably, treated mice exhibited a decrease in the ocular infiltration of immune cell populations into the retina; reduced TNF-α, IL-6, and IFN-γ serum levels: and inhibited TNF-α mRNA expression in retinal tissues. Although CAPE failed to inhibit IRBP-specific T cell proliferation, it was sufficient to suppress cytokine, chemokine, and IRBP-specific antibody production. In addition, retinal tissues isolated from CAPE-treated EAU mice revealed a decrease in NF-κB p65 and phospho-IκBα. The data identify CAPE as a potential therapeutic agent for autoimmune uveitis that acts by inhibiting cellular infiltration into the retina, reducing the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines, chemokine, and IRBP-specific antibody and blocking NF-κB pathway activation.

Abstract
AIMS Ischemia/reperfusion injury (IRI), resulting from hypoxic damage within a graft, is the leading cause of cell death and graft rejection. In this study, we investigated whether a HIF-1α inhibitor or various antioxidants were able to prevent ischemic injury in a cellular model in which experimental hypoxia was induced using CoCl2. MAIN METHODS The ischemic injury induced in HK-2 cells by CoCl2 was validated by increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, reduced cell viability, and increased apoptosis at different times and doses. The preventative effects of various anti-oxidants on ischemic injury were evaluated using ROS levels, cell viability, and apoptosis. The MAPK phosphorylation status and Bcl2/Bax expression levels were evaluated after treatment with various antioxidants. KEY FINDINGS The increase in ROS induced by hypoxia was significantly inhibited by NAC and CAPE, but not by any other treatment. The reduction in cell viability induced by CoCl2 was significantly inhibited by NAC and DPI, but not by any other treatment. The apoptosis induced by CoCl2 was also significantly inhibited by NAC and DPI, but not by any other treatment. Moreover, NAC and DPI prevented CoCl2-induced apoptosis in HK-2 cells in a dose- and time-dependent manner. Treatment of CoCl2 and HK-2 cells treated with DPI, but not NAC, significantly induced ERK activation and Bcl2 expression. NAC and DPI treatment prevented the apoptosis of cells cultured under hypoxic conditions. SIGNIFICANCE Our results suggest that DPI should be investigated further as a novel protective agent that prevents kidney ischemia.

Abstract
Purpose In 2010, the World Health Organization categorized L-cell type neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) as tumors of uncertain malignancy, while all others were classified as malignant. However, the diagnostic necessity of L-cell immunophenotyping is unclear, as are tumor stage and grade that may guide diagnosis and management. To clarify the predictive markers of rectal neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs), 5- and 10-year overall survival (OS) was analyzed by pathological parameters including L-cell phenotype. Materials and Methods A total of 2,385 rectal NENs were analyzed from our previous multicenter study and a subset of 170 rectal NENs was immunophenotyped. Results In univariate survival analysis, tumor grade (p < 0.0001), extent (p < 0.0001), size (p < 0.0001), lymph node metastasis (p=0.0063), and L-cell phenotype (p < 0.0001) showed significant correlation with the prognosis of rectal NENs; however, none of these markers achieved independent significance in multivariate analysis. The 10-year OS of tumors of NET grade 1, < 10 mm, the mucosa/submucosa was 97.58%, 99.47%, and 99.03%, respectively. L-Cell marker, glucagon II (GLP-1&2), with a cut off score of > 10, is useful in defining L-Cell type. In this study, an L-cell immunophenotype was found in 83.5% of all rectal NENs and most, but not all L-cell type tumors were NET G1, small (< 10 mm) and confined to the mucosa/submucosa. Conclusion From these results, the biological behavior of rectal NENs does not appear to be determined by L-cell type alone but instead by a combination of pathological parameters.

Abstract
BACKGROUND FOLFOX-based adjuvant chemotherapy is a benefit for high-risk stage II and stage III colon cancer after curative resection. But, the prognostic factor or predictive marker for the efficacy of FOLFOX remains unclear. This study was aimed to identify the prognostic value and cumulative impact of adjuvant FOLFOX on the stage II and III colon cancer patients. METHODS A total of 196 stage II and III colon cancer patients were retrospectively enrolled in prospectively collected data. They underwent curative resection followed by FOLFOX4 adjuvant chemotherapy. The oncological outcomes included the 5-year disease-free survival (DFS) rate and 5-year overall survival (OS) rate. Cox-regression analysis was performed to identify the prognostic value, and its cumulative impact was analyzed. RESULTS The 5-year DFS rate of the patients was 71.94% and the 5-year OS rate was 81.5%. The prognostic values for the 5-year DFS rate and 5-year OS rate were T4 stage and preoperative anemia in a multivariate analysis. Each patient group who had no prognostic value, single, or both factors revealed 95.35%, 69.06%, and 28.57% in the 5-year DFS rate, respectively (p < 0.0001). The 5-year OS rate also showed the significant differences in each group who had no prognostic value, single, or both factors revealed 100%, 79.3%, and 45.92%, respectively (p < 0.0001). CONCLUSION Our results showed similar efficacy to MOSAIC study in stage II and stage III colon cancer patients treated with adjuvant FOLFOX chemotherapy after curative resection. Patients who had T4 stage and/or preoperative anemia showed worse prognosis than patients without any prognostic value. These findings suggest that FOLFOX could not be effective in the patients with T4 stage colon cancer accompanied by preoperative anemia.

Abstract
Methods for estimating the cord blood (CB) inventory size required vary according to the ethnic diversity of the HLA, degree of HLA matching and HLA-typing resolution. We estimated the CB inventory size required using 7190 stored CB units (CBU) and 2450 patients who were awaiting or underwent allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. With high-resolution typing of HLA-A, B and DRB1, 94.6% of Korean patients could find CBUs in 100 000 CBUs with a 5/6 match, and 95.7% could find CBUs in 5000 CBUs with a 4/6 match. With low-resolution typing of HLA-A and B and high-resolution typing of leukocyte antigen-DRB1, 95% of patients could find CBUs in 50 000 CBUs with a 5/6 match, and 96.7% could find CBUs in 3000 CBUs with a 4/6 match. With additional high-resolution typing for HLA-A and B, which could improve transplantation outcome, the size of the CB inventory would need to increase twofold for Koreans.

Abstract
Purpose Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) is a contributory carcinogen in gastric adenocarcinoma. 15-Hydroxyprostaglandin dehydrogenase (15-PGDH) catabolizes PGE2 by oxidizing its 15(s)-hydroxy group. The aim of this study was to investigate the expression of 15-PGDH in gastric adenocarcinoma tissue and the relationship between 15-PGDH expression and clinicopathologic features of gastric adenocarcinoma. Methods Ninety-nine patients who underwent surgical resection for gastric adenocarcinoma between January 2007 and December 2007 were enrolled and evaluated retrospectively. Results In 62 patients (62.6%), 15-PGDH expression was lower in gastric adenocarcinoma tissue than in nonneoplastic tissue. Regarding the relationship between 15-PGDH expression and clinicopathological features, 15-PGDH expression was significantly lower in tissues with poor differentiation (P = 0.002), advanced T stage (P = 0.0319), a higher number of lymph node metastases (P = 0.045), lymphatic invasion (P = 0.031), and vascular invasion (P = 0.036). Conclusion 15-PGDH expression was associated with a subset of clinicopathologic features such as differentiation grade, T stage, lymphatic invasion, and vascular invasion.

Abstract
Gangliocytic paragangliomas (GPs) are rare tumors of the duodenum, presenting as single sessile or pedunculated polypoid masses. Clinical manifestations of duodenal GPs can vary from an incidental finding at endoscopy to frequent upper gastrointestinal bleeding caused by mucosal ulceration and abdominal pain. GPs are considered benign, but the disease can recur and spread to regional lymph nodes. A 41-year-old female presented with abdominal pain. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy revealed a subepithelial tumor of the ampulla of Vater in the second portion of the duodenum. The tumor was resected using the endoscopic mucosal resection technique. The tumor was diagnosed as benign GP of the duodenum using histological and immunohistochemical staining procedures.
