Abstract
The focus of this work is the change in sediment properties and chemical characteristics that occur after land reclamation projects. The results indicate a higher sedimentation rate in Lake Hachirogata after reclamation, with the rate increasing with proximity to the agricultural zone. In the west-side water samples, higher levels of dissolved total nitrogen and dissolved total phosphorus (DTP) were found in both surface and bottom waters. The increase in P (39-80%) was generally greater than that for N (12-16%), regarding the nutrient supply from reclaimed farmland in the western part of the lake. In the eastern part of the lake, the pore-water Cl- profile showed a decreasing vertical gradient in the sediment core. This indicates desalination of the lake water after construction of a sluice gate in 1961. In the western sediment-core sample, a uniform Cl- profile indicates the mixing of lake water and pore water after reclamation. Considering the sedimentation of P in the last 100 years, there is a trend of increasing accumulation of P and P-activities after the reclamation project. This appears to be an impact from change in the lake environment as a result of increased agricultural nutrients, desalination, and residence. A large amount of mobile phosphorus (42-72% of TP in the western core sample) trapped in sediment increases the risk of phosphorus release and intensification of algal blooms. High sediment phosphorus and phosphorus mobility should be considered a source of pollution in the coastal environment.

Abstract
Effects of physical and morphometric factors on nutrient removal properties were studied in small agricultural ponds with different depths, volumes, and residence times in western Japan. Average residence time was estimated to be >15 days, and it tended to decrease from summer to winter because of the increase in water withdrawal for agricultural activity. Water temperature was clearly different between the surface and bottom layers; this indicates that thermal stratification occurred in summer. Chlorophyll-a was significantly high (>20 μg/L) in the surface layer (<0.5 m) and influenced by the thermal stratification. Removal ratios of dissolved total nitrogen (DTN) and dissolved total phosphorus in the ponds were estimated to be 53-98% and 39-98% in August and 10-92% and 36-57% in December, respectively. Residence time of the ponds was longer in August than in December, and DTN removal, in particular, was more significant in ponds with longer residence time. Our results suggest residence time is an important factor for nitrogen removal in small agricultural ponds as well as large lakes.

Abstract
AIMS Data on primary central nervous system lymphoma that had been collected through surveys for four consecutive periods between 1985 and 2009 were analysed to evaluate outcomes according to treatment. MATERIALS AND METHODS All had histologically proven disease and had received radiotherapy. No patients had AIDS. Among 1054 patients, 696 died and 358 were alive or lost to follow-up. The median follow-up period for surviving patients was 37 months. RESULTS For all patients, the median survival time was 24 months; the 5 year survival rate was 25.8%. Patients treated with methotrexate-based chemotherapy and radiation had a higher 5 year survival rate (43%) than those treated with radiation alone (14%) and those treated with non-methotrexate chemotherapy plus radiation (20%), but differences in relapse-free survival were smaller among the three groups. The 5 year survival rate was 25% for patients treated with whole-brain irradiation and 29% for patients treated with partial-brain irradiation (P = 0.80). Patients receiving a total dose of 40-49.9 Gy had a higher 5 year survival rate (32%) than those receiving other doses (21-25%, P = 0.0004) and patients receiving a whole-brain dose of 30-39.9 Gy had a higher 5 year survival rate (32%) than those receiving ≥40 Gy (13-22%, P < 0.0005). Patients receiving methotrexate-based chemotherapy and partial-brain radiotherapy (≥30 Gy) had a 5 year survival rate of 49%. CONCLUSIONS The optimal total and whole-brain doses may be in the range of 40-49.9 and <40 Gy, respectively, especially in combination with chemotherapy. Patients receiving partial-brain irradiation had a prognosis similar to that of those receiving whole-brain irradiation. With methotrexate-based chemotherapy, partial-brain radiotherapy may be worth considering for non-elderly patients with a single tumour.

Abstract
UNLABELLED This study investigated the role of macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) in fracture repair using MIF gene-deficient mice (MIF KO). Fracture healing was delayed in MIF KO, and this was mainly due to the delay in the mineralization of osteoid within the fracture callus. INTRODUCTION We previously reported that the expression of macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) was up-regulated during the fracture healing process in rats. However, its role in the pathophysiology of this process remained unclear. The aim of the present study was to clarify the role of MIF in the fracture healing process using MIF gene-deficient mice (MIF KO). METHODS Bone repair in wild-type mice (WT) and MIF KO (n = 70, respectively) was investigated using a tibia fracture model. Radiographic, biomechanical, histological, bone histomorphometric, and molecular analyses were performed. RESULTS Post-fracture biomechanical testing showed that maximum load and stiffness were significantly lower in MIF KO than in WT on day 42. However, similar levels were observed between the two groups on day 84. Bone histomorphometric analysis revealed significantly higher osteoid volume, a lower mineral apposition rate, and smaller numbers of osteoclasts in the MIF KO callus compared to the WT callus. The messenger ribonucleic acid expressions of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-2, membranous type 1-MMP, cathepsin K, and tissue nonspecific alkaline phosphatase were found to be significantly suppressed in the MIF KO callus. CONCLUSION The results of the present study suggest that delayed fracture healing in MIF KO was mainly attributable to a delay in osteoid mineralization.

Abstract
Previous studies have shown that neutralization of macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) by anti-MIF antibody reduces intestinal inflammation in mice. In this study we tested whether or not anti-MIF autoantibody induced by DNA vaccine targeting MIF protects mice against experimental colitis. Mice were administered a MIF-deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) vaccine by introducing oligonucleotides encoding helper T epitope into the cDNA sequence of murine MIF by in vivo electroporation. Preventive effects of this method against dextran sulphate sodium-induced (DSS) colitis were evaluated. Mice administered with MIF-DNA vaccine raised values of autoantibody significantly. The clinical and histological findings of colitis induced by 3·0% DSS solution were ameliorated significantly in mice treated with MIF-DNA vaccine compared with saline or pCAGGS-treated mice given DSS. Myeloperoxidase activity, infiltration of F4/80-positive staining cells and the levels of proinflammatory cytokines were suppressed in the colon of MIF-DNA vaccine treated mice compared with saline or pCAGGS-treated mice exposed to DSS. Our results suggest that immunization with helper T epitope DNA-vaccine targeting MIF may be a useful approach for the treatment of colitis including inflammatory bowel diseases.

Abstract
Silymarin, derived from the milk thistle plant, Silybum marianum, has been traditionally used in the treatment of liver disease. Our previous study demonstrated that silymarin has an anti-apoptotic effect against UV irradiation. In this study, SIRT1, a human deacetylase that was reported to promote cell survival, was activated by silymarin (5 x 10(- 4) mol/L) in UV-irradiated human malignant melanoma, A375-S2 cells, followed by down-regulated expression of Bax and decreased release of cytochrome c. Cleavage of procaspase-3 and digestion of its substrates, the inhibitor of caspase-activated DNase (ICAD) and poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP), were also reduced. Consistent with its protective effect on UV-induced apoptosis, silymarin (5 x 10(- 4) mol/L) also increased G(2)/M phase arrest, possibly providing a prolonged time for efficient DNA repair. Consequently, that silymarin protected A375-S2 cell against UV-induced apoptosis was partially through SIRT1 pathway and modulation of the cell cycle distribution.

Abstract
Dracorhodin perchlorate, an anthocyanin red pigment, induces human premyelocytic leukemia HL-60 cell death through apoptotic pathway. Caspase -1, -3, -8, -9, and -10 inhibitors partially reversed the cell death induced by dracorhodin perchlorate. Caspase-3 and -8 were activated followed to the degradation of caspase-3 substrates, inhibitor of caspase-activated DNase (ICAD) and poly-(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP). Dracorhodin perchlorate up-regulated the expression ratio of mitochondrial proteins, Bax/Bcl-XL. The cell death was accompanied with phosphorylation of ERK, JNK and p38 MAPK and partially reduced by MEK inhibitor (PD98059), JNK MAPK inhibitor (SP600125) and p38 MAPK inhibitor (SB 203580). Taken together, dracorhodin perchlorate-induced apoptosis in HL-60 cells via up-regulation of Bax, activation of caspases and ERK/p38/JNK MAPKs.

Abstract
AIM Fluctuations in autonomic nervous functions throughout the menstrual cycle and the underlying mechanism concerning them are not well known. This study was designed to test the hypothesis that fluctuations in cardiovagal baroreflex sensitivity (BRS) throughout the menstrual cycles of young women are due to fluctuations in carotid arterial distensibility. METHODS In eight eumenorrhoeic healthy young women (18-24 years), we determined the variations in the carotid arterial distensibility coefficient (DC; via simultaneous ultrasonography and applanation tonometry), cardiovagal BRS (phase IV of the Valsalva manoeuvre and the sequence method; up- or down-sequence spontaneous BRS), and serum oestradiol and progesterone concentrations at five points in the menstrual cycle (menstrual = M, follicular = F, ovulatory = O, early luteal = EL, and late luteal = LL). RESULTS Serum oestradiol and progesterone levels were consistent with the predicted cycle phases. Carotid arterial DC fluctuated cyclically, increasing significantly from the M (52.4 +/- 4.9 x 10(-3) kPa(-1), mean +/- SE) and F (52.7 +/- 4.4) phases to the O (57.6 +/- 4.4) phase and declining sharply in the EL (46.0 +/- 4.0) and LL (45.1 +/- 3.0) phases (F = 6.37, P < 0.05). Contrary to our prediction, however, cardiovagal BRS by the Valsalva manoeuvre (P = 0.73) or sequence method (up-sequence spontaneous BRS; P = 0.84: down-sequence spontaneous BRS; P = 0.67) did not change significantly during the menstrual cycle. CONCLUSION The results suggest that, although carotid arterial distensibility fluctuates with the changes in ovarian hormone levels that occur during the menstrual cycle, the fluctuations in carotid arterial distensibility do not influence cardiovagal BRS.

Abstract
To examine the possible age-related blood pressure (BP) deregulation in response to central hypervolemia, we measured spontaneous baroreflex sensitivity (SBRS), carotid arterial compliance (CC), and R-R interval coefficient of variation (RRICV) during basal and thermoneutral resting head-out-of-water immersion (HOWI) in 7 young (YG = 24.0 +/- 0.8 years) and 6 middle-aged/older (OL = 59.3 +/- 1.3 years) healthy men. Compared with basal conditions (YG = 19.6 +/- 4.0 vs OL = 6.1 +/- 1.5 ms/mmHg, P < 0.05), SBRS remained higher in YG than OL during rest HOWI (YG = 23.6 +/- 6.6 vs OL = 9.3 +/- 2.1 ms/mmHg, P < 0.05). The RRICV was significantly different between groups (YG = 6.5 +/- 1.4 vs OL = 2.8 +/- 0.4%, P < 0.05) under HOWI. The OL group had no increase in CC, but a significant increase in systolic BP (basal = 115.3 +/- 4.4 vs water = 129.3 +/- 5.3 mmHg, P < 0.05) under HOWI. In contrast, the YG group had a significant increase in CC (basal = 0.16 +/- 0.01 vs water = 0.17 +/- 0.02 mm(2)/mmHg, P < 0.05) with no changes in systolic BP. SBRS was positively related to CC (r = 0.58, P < 0.05 for basal vs r = 0.62, P < 0.05 for water). Our data suggest that age-related vagal dysfunction and reduced CC may be associated with SBRS differences between YG and OL groups, and with BP elevation during HOWI in healthy older men.

Abstract
Appropriate endurance exercise is capable of increasing bone mass and strength in both animals and humans. We examined the skeletal changes induced by treadmill running exercise in young growing rats with a particular emphasis on three-dimensional trabecular bone microarchitecture. Fourteen male Wistar rats were divided into sedentary (CON; n = 7) and exercised (RUN; n = 7) groups at the age of 4 weeks. The rats in the RUN group performed the treadmill running exercise of 30 m/min for 60 min, 5 times a week. After 10 weeks of exercise, bone mineral density (BMD), cortical geometry, diaphyseal breaking force, and trabecular bone microarchitecture in the femur were measured. Three-dimensional trabecular bone microarchitecture was evaluated at the distal femoral metaphysis using microcomputed tomography. The running exercise significantly increased BMD, bone volume, bone volume fraction, trabecular thickness, and trabecular number, whereas trabecular bone pattern factor, the parameter associated with decreased trabecular connectivity, was significantly lower in the RUN group than the CON group. On the other hand, no significant difference in the degree of anisotropy and structure model index was observed between the two groups. At the femoral diaphysis, running exercise significantly increased cortical bone area, width, and maximum load without affecting bending stress, implying that the material properties of bone had not changed in the exercised rats. These results suggest that the increase in bone strength induced by endurance exercise is mediated by changes in trabecular bone microarchitecture as well as density and cortical geometry.

Abstract
A case of simultaneous double malignant tumor in the same kidney, associating renal cell carcinoma with renal pelvic transitional cell carcinoma, in a 70 year-old-male was reported. On January 6, 2000 he presented with macroscopic hematuria. There were no remarkable findings on cystoscopic examination. Drip infusion pyelography and multidetector-row computed tomography demonstrated a tumor mass on the upper pole of the left kidney and atrophic right kidney. Systemic chemotherapy with CDDP, MTX and ADR was performed preoperatively. Then, hemi-left nephrectomy underwent with the diagnosis of renal pelvic tumor and renal tumor. The surgical specimen was pathologically diagnosed as transitional cell carcinoma of the renal pelvis and renal cell carcinoma of its upper pole. This is the 32nd case of simultaneous occurrence of renal cell carcinoma and transitional cell carcinoma in the same kidney in the Japanese literature.

Abstract
We investigated the effects of F-1322 (N-[2-[4-(benzhydryloxy)piperidino]ethyl]-3-hydroxy-5-(3-pyridylmethoxy)-2-naphthamide), a new compound that inhibits both thromboxane A2 synthetase and 5-lipoxygenase and that functions as a histamine antagonist, on the Ascaris antigen-induced late asthmatic response and pulmonary eosinophilia in guinea pigs. Oral administration of F-1322 (10-100 mg/kg) inhibited the antigen-induced late asthmatic response in a dose-dependent manner. Histological analysis revealed that F-1322 prevented the accumulation of eosinophils in the airways and this was paralleled by a decrease in the number of eosinophils and lymphocytes recovered in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid. F-1322 (0.1-10 microM) inhibited eotaxin-induced chemotaxis and actin polymerization of eosinophils in vitro in a concentration-dependent manner, while oral administration of F-1322 dose-dependently suppressed the migration of eosinophils into the airways in vivo in response to infusion of interleukin 5 and eotaxin in combination. F-1322 may, thus, improve the late asthmatic response in this model, in part, by preventing the accumulation of eosinophils in the airways. The pharmacological profile of F-1322 indicates that this drug is likely to be useful in the treatment of allergic diseases such as asthma.

Abstract
The nature and enzymic properties of starch-branching enzyme (SBE) are two of the dominant factors influencing the fine structure of starch. To understand the role of this enzyme's activity in the formation of starch in kidney bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), a study was undertaken to identify the major SBE sequences expressed during seed development and to characterize the enzymic properties of the coded recombinant enzymes. Two SBE cDNA species (designated pvsbe2 and pvsbe1) that displayed significant similarity (more than 70%) to other family A and B SBEs respectively were isolated. Northern blot analysis revealed that pvsbe1 and pvsbe2 were differentially expressed during seed development. pvsbe2 showed maximum steady-state transcript levels at the mid-stage of seed maturation, whereas pvsbe1 reached peak levels at a later stage. Western blot analysis with antisera raised against both recombinant proteins (rPvSBE1 and rPvSBE2) showed that these two SBEs were located in different amyloplast fractions of developing seeds of kidney bean. PvSBE2 was present in the soluble fraction, whereas PvSBE1 was associated with the starch granule fraction. The differences in location suggest that these two SBE isoenzymes have different roles in amylopectin synthesis in kidney bean seeds. rPvSBE1 and rPvSBE2 were purified from Escherichia coli and their kinetic properties were determined. The affinity of rPvSBE2 for amylose (K(m) 1.27 mg/ml) was lower than that of rPvSBE1 (0.46 mg/ml). The activity of rPvSBE2 was stimulated more than 3-fold in the presence of 0.3 M citrate, whereas rPvSBE1 activity was not affected. The implications of the enzymic properties and the distribution of SBEs and amylopectin structure are discussed.

Abstract
PURPOSE Endurance training induces reductions in both resting and postexercise heart rate (HR). If adaptation in cardiac autonomic regulation is a contributing factor in these reductions, changes in cardiac autonomic nervous system (ANS) should correspond to those in HR during an endurance-training program. We investigated the changes in resting and postexercise HR variabilities (both in the time and frequency domain) over a 6-wk training program. METHODS HR variability was measured five times in an endurance-training group (N = 7) and four times in a control group (N = 5) during the course of study. RESULTS Endurance training decreased HR and increased indices of parasympathetic modulation measured both at rest and during postexercise recovery periods. Noteworthy is that no changes in either HR or indices of ANS modulation measured during postexercise recovery periods were detectable after the first 7 d of the study despite continued changes in resting HR and indices in ANS modulation measured between the 7th and 42nd days of the endurance-training program. CONCLUSIONS The study demonstrates that with endurance-training changes in cardiac ANS modulation partly contribute to a decrease in HR at rest and during postexercise recovery period, and that adaptation of the cardiac autonomic control occurs sooner in immediate postexercise periods than at rest.

Abstract
The cross-sectional area (CSA) of large-conductance arteries increases in response to endurance training in humans. To determine whether training-induced changes in arterial structure are systemic in nature or, rather, are confined to the arteries supplying exercising muscles, we studied 10 young men who performed one-legged cycle training [80% of one-legged peak O2 uptake (VO2 peak)), 40 min/day, 4 days/wk] for 6 wk and detraining for another 6 wk. There were no significant differences in baseline one-legged VO2 peak) and CSA of the common femoral artery and vein (via B-mode ultrasound) between experimental and control legs. In the experimental leg, one-legged VO2 peak) increased 16% [from 3.0 +/- 0.1 to 3.4 +/- 0.1 (SE) l/min], arterial CSA increased 16% (from 84 +/- 3 to 97 +/- 5 mm2), and venous CSA increased 46% (from 56 +/- 5 to 82 +/- 5 mm2) after endurance training. These changes returned to baseline during detraining. There were no changes in one-legged VO2 peak) and arterial CSA in the control leg, whereas femoral venous CSA in the control leg significantly increased 24% (from 54 +/- 5 to 67 +/- 4 mm2) during training. Changes in femoral arterial and venous CSA in the experimental leg were positively and significantly related to corresponding changes in one-legged VO2 peak) (r = 0.86 and 0.76, respectively), whereas there were no such relations in the control leg (r = 0.10 and 0.17). When stepwise regression analysis was performed, a primary determinant of change in VO2 peak) was change in femoral arterial CSA, explaining approximately 70% of the variability. These results support the hypothesis that the regional increase in blood flow, rather than systemic factors, is associated with the training-induced arterial expansion. Femoral arterial expansion may contribute, at least in part, to improvement in efficiency of blood transport from the heart to exercising muscles and may facilitate achievement of aerobic work capacity.

Abstract
Bacteriophage Phi8 has a genome of three dsRNA segments. It is able to acquire plasmid transcripts of cDNA copies of the genomic segments as replacements of its resident chromosomes. It is also able to effect recombination between the plasmid transcripts and the resident chromosomes. Depending upon the extent of sequence identity between the plasmid transcript and the resident chromosome, the recombination can be homologous or heterologous. Homologous recombination has not previously been reported for viruses with double-stranded RNA genomes.

Abstract
It is well known that heart rate, oxygen uptake and body temperature during exercise in water are affected by water temperature, buoyancy, hydrostatic and so on. It has been reported that the central blood volume during immersion was affected by the increased external hydrostatic pressure and cold-induced peripheral vasoconstriction, and intrathoratic blood volume should be greater during cold than warm water immersion (Epstein, 1992). The purpose of this presentation study was to make clear heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen uptake and cardiac autonomic nervous system modulation during supine floating at water temperatures of 25, 35 and 41 degrees C.

During water immersion bradycardia and increase in stroke volume induce by changing in hydrostatic pressure. We hypothesised that the cardiac alterations with immersion are associates with an increase in venous return from lower body. Because the venous return reflects volume of capacitance vein e.g, inferior vena cava. Therefore, we clarified the effects of water immersion on the size in left ventricle, aorta, and vena cava.

Abstract
An 84-year-old man presented at our hospital with complaints of severe gross hematuria and lower right abdominal pain. A right renal mass was detected by ultrasound sonography and plain computerized tomography (CT) scan, but an exact diagnosis was not obtained. Because the patient presented with moderate renal dysfunction and severe gross hematuria, we were unable to perform imaging studies using contrast material or ureteroscopic instruments. Finally, mercaptoacetylglycyl-glycylglycine (MAG3) scintigraphy and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated renal cell carcinoma, and we performed transarterial embolization (TAE) therapy using ethanol and gel foam. Based on their efficacy and noninvasiveness, we conclude that MAG3 scintigraphy and MRI are the optimal modalities for imaging in patients with renal dysfunction.

Abstract
The patient was a 44-year-old woman in whom a mass of the right kidney was found when she underwent abdominal ultrasonography in a physical checkup. The computed tomography of abdomen and the magnetic resonance imaging of abdomen revealed a 3 x 3 cm solid mass at the right kidney. Excretory urograms showed a deformity of the right collecting system due to a mass lesion. The specimen of the resected tumor showed a cellular arrangement specific to carcinoid tumor and positive reaction of Grimelius stain. Electron microscopy confirmed the presence of dense-core granules in the tumor cells. Gastrointestinal investigation after the operation revealed no particular findings suggesting a carcinoid syndrome. No evidence of metastasis or recurrence was noted for 5 months after the operation. This was a very rare case of primary renal carcinoid tumor, representing the 12th case in the literature in Japan.

Abstract
The three dsRNA genomic segments of bacteriophage Phi 13 were copied as cDNA and the nucleotide sequences were determined. The organization of the genome is similar to that of Phi 6, and there is significant similarity in the amino acid sequences of the proteins of the polymerase complex and one of the membrane proteins, P6. There is little or no similarity in the nucleotide sequences. Several features of the viral proteins differ markedly from those of Phi 6. Although both phages are covered by a lipid-containing membrane, the protein compositions are different. The host attachment protein consists of two peptides rather than one and the phage attaches directly to the LPS of the host rather than to a Type IV pilus. Despite the differences in the structure of the membranes, the two viruses can successfully exchange the genes for host attachment proteins and thereby change their host specificities.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to make clear the relaxative effects of supine floating (SF) on heart rate, blood pressure and cardiac autonomic nervous activity in males. Ten males served as subjects (n=10, mean age: 22.4 yrs). All subjects gave informed consent before participating. Water and room temperature were 30 degrees C. Heart rate and blood pressure were measured during SF or control (C) conditions. Cardiac autonomic nerve activity was estimated with the power spectrum analysis of heart rate variability (HRV) by using the Fast Fourier Transformation (FFT). High frequency (HF; 0.15-0.40 Hz) and the ratio of low frequency (LF; 0.04-0.15 Hz) to HF (LF/HF) were used as an indicator of cardiac vagal activity and sympatho-vagal balance, respectively. Those values were showed logarithmically (LogHF and LogLF/LogHF). LogHF during SF condition was significantly increased, LogLF/LogHF, heart rate and blood pressure were significantly decreased. These data indicate that cardiac vagal activity is enhanced and sympathetic nervous activity is suppressed by reciprocal response.

Abstract
Recently we found that some nucleosides such as inosine or adenosine inhibited alpha-glucosidase from rat intestine. The aim of this study was to determine whether these nucleosides are sucrase inhibitors in humans as well as rats. Blood glucose and insulin responses were examined in 23 healthy volunteers (18 males and 5 females) administered sucrose with inosine and 8 (males) administered sucrose with adenosine. The initial increase in plasma glucose and serum insulin concentrations at 30 min after loading sucrose (50 g) alone were significantly reduced by co-administration of inosine (2.5 and 1.0 g) or adenosine (2.5 g). The total increases in the areas under the plasma glucose and serum insulin concentration curves for 3 h after administration of the same amount of sucrose with inosine were also significantly less than those when the volunteers were administered sucrose alone. These results in humans agree with the findings obtained in our previous studies in rats. These nucleosides may be used as one of the components of artificial sweeteners when mixed with sucrose and may be useful as food additives to suppress increases in blood glucose and insulin.

Abstract
A statistical analysis was made of diseases, patients, and operations at our department in the four affiliated hospitals of Jikei University School of Medicine from 1978 through 1997. Our findings were as follows. Newly diagnosed urogenital malignancies, except testicular tumors, have been increasing in the last two decades among both outpatients and inpatients. Urogenital infections, including tuberculosis, have gradually been decreasing in the last two decades. The treatment of urinary stone diseases was markedly altered by the induction of extracorponeal shock wave lithotripsy.

Abstract
It is known that heart rate, oxygen uptake and body temperature during exercise in water are affected by water temperature, buoyancy and so on. Relaxation in water (supine floating) has been performed in hydrotherapy and aqua exercise. But there were few reports about supine floating (Schulz and Kaspar 1994). The purpose of this study was to make clear the effects of supine floating on heart rate, blood pressure and cardiac autonomic nervous system activity in males.

The most striking difference is that protein P8, which constitutes a shell around the procapsid in Phi6, is part of the membrane in Phi8. The host attachment protein consists of two peptides rather than one and the phage attaches directly to the lipopolysaccharide of the host rather than to a type IV pilus. The host range of Phi8 includes rough strains of Salmonella typhimurium and of pseudomonads

Abstract
A 31-year-old man was referred to our hospital for evaluation of urachal rest. The history of his present illness dated back to birth, when the umbilicus was projected and urinary discharge was noted. At that time, the symptom of discharge had spontaneously subsided. At the age of 22, however, the patient again experienced discharge from the umbilicus. Although he did not seek treatment, after six years this symptom disappeared. Around this time, however, pyuria was revealed during medical examination, and abdominal ultrasonography (US) suggested the presence of urachal rest. At the time of hospitalization, physical examination revealed that the patient's right testis was not palpable. He was diagnosed with patent urachus with hemilateral aplasia and monorchism by US, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging and cystoscopy. The patient subsequently underwent radical operation. Patent urachus in adults is very rare, and only a few cases have been reported. To our knowledge, only one previously reported case involved a recurrence after spontaneous healing. Further, this is the first report of a patient with patent urachus with hemilateral aplasia and monorchism. Radical operation is generally recommended, based on the fact that very few cases heal conservatively.

Abstract
We analyzed a megakaryocyte-derived protein immunoreactive with an antiserum to cartilage oligomeric matrix protein (COMP) in the developing rat liver. Staining with the anti-COMP antiserum in the developing rat liver increased during embryogenesis, and was strongest in the livers of 17-day-old embryos. However, staining in the liver was not detected at eight days after birth or thereafter. The stained cells were found to be megakaryocytes. We partially purified the protein showing cross-reaction with the antiserum to COMP from a megakaryocyte-rich cells fraction in 17-day-old embrionic rat livers. The molecular weight of this protein (approximately 95 kDa) was close to the molecular weight of COMP (105 kDa). Amplification of an RT-PCR fragment (225 bp) corresponding to part of COMP mRNA was detected in cartilage, but not in megakaryocytes of fetal liver or bone marrow. Based on these results, the fetal rat liver megakaryocyte-derived protein that reacted with the antiserum against COMP was thought to contain a common epitope with COMP from cartilage, but to be a different protein from COMP.

Abstract
Blood glucose and insulin responses and gastric emptying were examined in rats intubated with sucrose or soluble starch that contained adenosine, inosine and cytosine. The increase in serum glucose and insulin levels in the rats following loading with sucrose (2.5 g/kg of body weight) or soluble starch (1.875 g/kg of body weight) was significantly reduced by the administration of adenosine, inosine and cytosine (0.0625-0.125 g/kg of body weight). The gastric emptying rates were only marginally affected by the nucleoside administration. The activities of sucrase, maltase, isomaltase and glucoamylase in a crude preparation from the small intestinal mucosa of rats were mildly inhibited by the nucleosides. The decrease in blood glucose and insulin levels may have been in response to a decrease in glucose absorption caused by the inhibiting effect of the nucleosides on the mucosal enzymes that digest sucrose, maltose, and malto- and isomalto-oligosaccharides.

Abstract
Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) is a cytokine that mediates inflammatory processes in a variety of tissues. In this study, we examined the expression of MIF mRNA in the mouse osteoblastic cell line MC3T3-E1, whose proliferation is promoted by various growth factors. In the subconfluent state, transforming growth factor-beta, basic fibroblast growth factor, insulin-like growth factor-II, and fetal calf serum markedly upregulated MIF mRNA expression. The upregulation of MIF mRNA was less extensive when the cells were stimulated by the same growth factors in the overconfluent state. We also investigated the expression of MIF mRNA through a whole cell cycle from G0 phase when the osteoblastic cells were synchronized by serum starvation. The MIF mRNA expression, which gradually increased from the G0 and reached its maximum at the S phase, was nonperiodic. Moreover, human recombinant MIF upregulated the expression of urokinase plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) precursor mRNA in human osteoblastic Saos-2 cells. Plasminogen activator (PA) is known to play an important role in bone metabolism, for example, in activation of procollagenase or growth factors indirectly via the formation of plasmin, and in mitogenic activity for osteoblastic cells. Our results suggest that MIF modulates the proliferation of osteoblasts and, moreover, bone tissue remodeling through the PA and plasmin system.

Abstract
Neutral matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are responsible for the pathological features of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) such as degradation of cartilage. We herein show the up-regulation of MMP-1 (interstitial collagenase) and MMP-3 (stromelysin) mRNAs of cultured synovial fibroblasts retrieved from rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients in response to macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF). The elevation of MMP-1 and MMP-3 mRNA was dose-dependent and started at 6 h post-stimulation by MIF, reached the maximum level at 24 h, and was sustained at least up to 36 h. Interleukin (IL)-1beta mRNA was also up-regulated by MIF. These events were preceded by up-regulation of c-jun and c-fos mRNA. Tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase (TIMP)-1, a common inhibitor of these proteases, was slightly up-regulated by MIF. Similarly, mRNA up-regulation of MMP-1 and MMP-3 was observed in the synovial fibroblasts of patients with osteoarthritis. However, their expression levels were much lower than those of RA synovial fibroblasts. The mRNA up-regulation by MIF was inhibited by the tyrosine kinase inhibitors genestein and herbimycin A, as well as the protein kinase C inhibitors staurosporine and H-7. On the other hand, the inhibition was not seen after the addition of the cyclic AMP-dependent kinase inhibitor, H-8. The mRNA up-regulation of MMPs was also inhibited by curcumin, an inhibitor of transcription factor AP-1, whereas interleukin-1 receptor antagonist, an IL-1 receptor antagonist, failed to inhibit the mRNA up-regulation. Considering these results, it is suggested that 1) MIF plays an important role in the tissue destruction of rheumatoid joints via induction of the proteinases, and 2) MIF up-regulates MMP-1 and MMP-3 via tyrosine kinase-, protein kinase C-, and AP-1- dependent pathways, bypassing IL-1beta signal transduction.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The circadian rhythm of blood pressure in patients with aldosterone-producing adenoma (APA) is not well understood. We evaluated the circadian blood pressure rhythm in such patients by comparison with that in patients with essential hypertension (EHT). The latter are characterized by a nocturnal blood pressure decline, the so called 'dipping' blood pressure pattern. DESIGN AND METHODS A total of 12 patients with APA and 36 patients with EHT who were matched by age and sex, and who had no severe organic disorders, were hospitalized to control their diet (low sodium) and activities. Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring was conducted for 24 h. The 24-h blood pressure was divided into waking blood pressure (0600-2130 h) and sleeping blood pressure (2200-0530 h). RESULTS The two groups showed no significant differences in age, sex, serum creatinine, plasma glucose, daily urinary sodium excretion, and left ventricular mass index. Although the 24-h mean blood pressure was higher in APA (112 +/- 8 mmHg) than EHT (102 +/- 12 mmHg), the dipping mean blood pressure ratio (%), which was calculated from the sleeping and waking blood pressures, did not differ significantly between the two groups (93.2 +/- 5.4 versus 92.8 +/- 5.9). CONCLUSION The dipping ratio of blood pressure in patients with APA resembled that of patients with EHT. Variables that would influence the circadian rhythm of blood pressure were controlled during study. The results suggest that a circadian blood pressure in patients with APA is of the dipping type, characterized by a nocturnal blood pressure decline, when a low sodium diet is ingested.

Abstract
Eight different bacteriophages were isolated from leaves of Pisum sativum, Phaseolus vulgaris, Lycopersicon esculentum, Daucus carota sativum, Raphanus sativum, and Ocimum basilicum. All contain three segments of double-stranded RNA and have genomic-segment sizes that are similar but not identical to those of previously described bacteriophage phi6. All appear to have lipid-containing membranes. The base sequences of some of the viruses are very similar but not identical to those of phi6. Three of the viruses have little or no base sequence identity to phi6. Two of the viruses, phi8 and phi12, contain proteins with a size distribution very different from that of phi6 and do not package genomic segments of phi6. Whereas phi6 attaches to host cells by means of a pilus, several of the new isolates attach directly to the outer membrane. Although the normal hosts of these viruses seem to be pseudomonads, those viruses that attach directly to the outer membrane can establish carrier states in Escherichia coli or Salmonella typhimurium. One of the isolates, phi8, can form plaques on heptoseless strains of S. typhimurium.

Abstract
Lafutidine is a new type antiulcer agent with antisecretory and gastroprotective activities. We investigated the effect of lafutidine on indomethacin-induced antral ulcer in refed rats. Subcutaneous indomethacin injection resulted in the formation of gastric antral ulcer. Lafutidine (1-10 mg/kg, p.o.) reduced the area of ulcer in a dose-dependent manner when administered immediately after the indomethacin injection. Capsaicin at 3 mg/kg, p.o. and 16,16-dimethyl prostaglandin E2 at 3 microg/kg, p.o. also reduced the ulcer area. Chemical deafferentation of capsaicin-sensitive neurons or N(G)-nitro-L-arginine treatment aggravated the ulcer formation and abolished the preventive effect of lafutidine and capsaicin. After the induction of gastric ulcer, lafutidine given twice daily for 2.5 days reduced the area of ulcer in a dose-dependent manner with a significant effect at 10 mg/kg, p.o., as compared with that of the control group. In chemically-deafferentated rats, lafutidine did not show any healing effect. Cimetidine (30 mg/kg, p.o.) and famotidine (1 mg/kg, p.o.) had no significant effect on indomethacin-induced antral ulcer. These results may suggest that lafutidine, unlike cimetidine and famotidine, can prevent the indomethacin-induced antral ulcer formation and accelerate the healing of the ulcer in refed rats through mechanisms involving the capsaicin-sensitive afferent neurons and nitric oxide.

Abstract
Lafutidine (CAS 118288-08-7, FRG-8813) is a novel histamine H2-receptor antagonist with gastroprotective activity. The aim of this study was to investigate the property of the gastro-protective activity of lafutidine by examining the effect on ammonia-induced change in transmucosal potential difference (PD), basal gastric mucosal blood flow (GMBF) and noxious agent-induced cell damage. Intragastrical application of lafutidine accelerated the recovery of the PD reduction after exposure of the mucosa to 0.25% ammonia solution and the accelerating effect was abolished by chemical deafferentation, but not with indometacin, a cyclooxygenase inhibitor. The application of capsaicin, as a reference compound, significantly promoted the recovery of the ammonia-induced PD reduction and this effect was not altered with indometacin. Lafutidine given intragastrically caused a sustained increase in GMBF in a dose-dependent fashion, which was also completely inhibited in the deafferentated rats. In vitro studies revealed that, in contrast to 16,16-dimethyl prostaglandin E2, lafutidine did not protect isolated gastric superficial epithelial cells from ethanol- or ammonia-induced damage. In conclusion, the gastroprotection of lafutidine is induced by promoting the restitution of the damaged mucosa after a noxious agent, not by directly protecting the epithelial cells and this effect may be caused through the mechanism of capsaicin-sensitive afferent nerves.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Inverted papilloma of the urinary tract is believed to be a benign neoplasm based on its histologic morphology and clinical behavior. In recent years, however, several investigators have warned against too optimistic an approach, emphasizing the possibility of malignant cellular transformation within the lesion, or its eventual association with other urothelial tumors such as transitional cell carcinoma or carcinoma in situ. We here report on 35 clinicopathologically diagnosed cases of inverted papilloma, and present the clinical significance attributed to these lesions in view of the current literature. PATIENTS AND METHODS From 1976 to 1997, 35 cases of inverted papilloma of the urinary tract were treated at our hospital. This report presents the clinical features of these cases, the results of prognosis research, an investigation of the cases in which inverted papilloma and transitional cell carcinoma were found to co-exist, and a discussion of the recurrent cases of inverted papilloma found in previous literature. RESULTS The patients ranged from 24 to 77 years of age, with a mean of 54 years, and included 4 women and 31 men. The most frequently occurring symptom was grosshematuria, and more than 90% of the 35 cases occurred in the bladder. In 2 of the 35 cases, transitional cell carcinoma coexisted with the inverted papilloma, at a different location in the bladder in one case and within the same neoplasm in the ureter in the other case. Clinical courses after treatment were followed in 29 of the 35 cases, with a follow-up period of from 8 months to 19 years (mean follow-up, 5 years and 4 months). Of these 29 cases, 2 showed recurrence, one at 16 and one at 30 months after the initial resection. Many previous reports show that the association of inverted papilloma and transitional cell carcinoma is stronger in the upper urinary tract and recurrence of inverted papilloma almost always happens with 2 years. CONCLUSION This study suggests that some cases of urinary inverted papilloma show recurrence or malignant potential. Our results indicate that all cases of urinary inverted papilloma should be treated and followed as cases of low-grade transitional cell carcinomas. Consequently, all cases must be followed for two years or more after the initial operation.

Abstract
Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) plays an important role in inflammation and immunity via autocrine/paracrine and endocrine routes. We examined the presence of MIF in the synovial fluids of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients. The content of MIF in the synovial fluid was quantitated by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay which revealed that the concentration of MIF for RA patients was 85. 7+/-35.2 ng/ml (mean+/-SD) (n=25). In comparison, the concentrations for osteoarthritis patients and normal volunteers were 19.5+/-5.3 ng/ml (n=12) and 10.4+/-1.1 ng/ml (n=5), respectively. The expression of MIF mRNA and presence of MIF protein in the synovial tissues of RA were demonstrated by Northern blot and Western blot analyses, respectively. Immunohistochemical analysis revealed that positive staining was largely observed in the cytoplasm of infiltrating T lymphocytes, which might be the major source of MIF detected in the synovial fluids. The pathophysiological role of MIF in RA remains to be elucidated; however, the present results for the first time suggest the possibility that MIF is involved in the potentiation of inflammatory and immunological responses in rheumatoid joints.

Abstract
Bacteriophage phi6 has a genome of three segments of double-stranded RNA enclosed in a polyhedral procapsid. Plus strand transcripts of the segments are packaged in a serially dependent fashion in which S can package alone, M depends on S, and L depends on S and M. We have isolated a mutant form of the virus in the carrier state that has lost segment S. This finding presented an apparent anomaly with respect to the packaging program. Sequencing of gene 1 of segment L in this virus showed a translational change of arginine to glycine at the 14th position. Procapsids prepared from cDNA containing this mutation show behavior in in vitro packaging that is consistent with the phenotype of the mutant virus. The procapsids are able to package segment S alone, but this RNA is present in reduced amounts when the other segments are present. Segments M and L package without dependence on segment S. The mutant virus appears to produce procapsids that are at the second stage of the packaging program.
