Abstract
Considering that Sorbus aucuparia fruits have been underutilized despite their tremendous potential, this study aimed to correlate the in vitro antioxidant, antibacterial and cell-protective abilities of fruit extracts derived from Sorbus aucuparia Romanian cultivars with their phytochemical composition. Therefore, following the preparation of ethanolic and carotenoid extracts, phytochemical screening was performed using UV-Vis and HPLC-DAD-ESI-MS methods. The antioxidant activity was analyzed using DPPH and FRAP tests. As the results revealed high contents of bioactive compounds (polyphenols 1.11 mg GAE/g DM, flavonoids 430.06 µg QE/g DM and carotenoids 95.68 µg/g DM) and an important antiradical action (DPPH 24.51 mg/mL and FRAP 0.016 µM TE/mL), we chose to further examine the fruits' biological properties. The antibacterial capacity was assessed employing agar well diffusion and broth microdilution techniques, with fruits displaying an intense activity against MSSA, MRSA and Enterococcus faecalis, but also E. coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The cell-protective activity was analyzed on gentamicin-stressed renal cells, through MTT and Annexin V-FITC assays. Importantly, a significant increase in viability was registered on stressed cells following extract administration in low doses; nevertheless, viability was noticed to decline when exposed to elevated concentrations, potentially due to the cumulative actions of the extract and gentamicin. These findings offer novel light on the antibacterial activity of Sorbus aucuparia Romanian cultivars, as well as their cell-protective ability in renal cell injury.

Abstract
In spite of its well-known nephrotoxicity, gentamicin is nonetheless routinely used in humans and animals. However, no adjuvant treatments have been implemented to mitigate this harmful effect. Given this concern, medicinal plants represent a significant reservoir of natural antioxidants that could potentially reduce the renal oxidative stress induced by gentamicin. Therefore, the main objective of this research was to investigate the nephroprotective properties of Cornus mas and Sorbus aucuparia fruits in an experimental model of nephrotoxicity. The 3-week study was performed on male Wistar rats, which were randomly divided into six experimental groups, being subcutaneously treated with 50 mg/kg gentamicin and orally given Cornus mas and Sorbus aucuparia extracts, in doses of 40 mg/kg and 10 mg/kg, respectively. Antioxidant therapy significantly improved the nitro-oxidative stress parameters as well as the specific renal biomarkers KIM-1 and iNAG, demonstrating a considerable renal tubular protective impact. These outcomes were reinforced by biochemical and histopathological enhancements. Nevertheless, neither of the tested extracts succeeded in substantially diminishing BUN levels. Additionally, CysC did not significantly decline following extracts treatment, suggesting that the remedies did not effectively protect renal glomeruli against gentamicin stress. Future studies are required in order to determine the underlying mechanisms of these berries.

Abstract
The immunomodulatory effect of a novel biomaterial obtained through electrospinning, based on polylactic acid (PLA) and nano-hydroxyapatite (nano-HAP), loaded with doxycycline (doxy) was evaluated in an animal model. The treatment capabilities as a local non-surgical treatment of periodontitis was investigated on the lower incisors of Wistar rats, after the induction of localized periodontitis using the ligature technique. Following the induction of the disease, the non-surgical treatment of scaling and root planing was applied, in conjunction with the application of the new material. The results of the treatment were evaluated clinically, using the tooth mobility and gingival index scores, as well as histologically. The salivary concentrations of matrix metalloproteinase 8 (MMP-8) and plasmatic concentrations of interleukin 1 (IL-1), interleukin 6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) were also monitored. Two weeks after the ligature application, the periodontal disease was successfully induced in rats. The application of the novel biomaterial obtained through electrospinning was proven to be more effective in improving the clinical parameters, while decreasing the salivary MMP-8 and plasmatic IL-1 and TNF-α concentrations, compared to the simple scaling and root planing. Thus, the novel electrospun biomaterial could be a strong candidate as an adjuvant to the non-surgical periodontal therapy.

Abstract
Mucoadhesive films loaded with doxycycline hyclate (Doxy Hyc), consisting of mixtures of hydroxypropylmethyl cellulose (HPMC) E3, K4 and polyacrylic acid (Carbopol 940), were prepared by casting method, aiming to design a formulation intended for application in the oral cavity. The obtained film formulations exhibited a Doxy Hyc content between 7.52 ± 0.42 and 7.83 ± 0.41%, which had adequate mechanical properties for application in the oral cavity and pH values in the tolerance range. The x-ray diffraction studies highlighted the amorphisation of Doxy Hyc in the preparation process and the antibiotic particles present on the surface of the films, identified in the TEM images, which ensured a burst release effect in the first 15 min of the in vitro dissolution studies, after which Doxy Hyc was released by diffusion, the data presenting a good correlation with the Peppas model, n < 0.5. The formulation F1, consisting of HPMC K4 combined with C940 in a ratio of 5:3, the most performing in vitro, was tested in vivo in experimentally-induced periodontitis and demonstrated its effectiveness in improving the clinical parameters and reducing the salivary levels of matrix metalloproteinase-8 (MMP-8). The prepared Doxy Hyc loaded mucoadhesive buccal film could be used as an adjuvant for the local treatment of periodontitis, ensuring prolonged release of the antibiotic after topical application.

Abstract
Malignant melanoma is the most aggressive type of skin cancer, and due to the numerous limitations of current treatment methods, there is an urgent need to develop novel approaches for both the prevention and treatment of malignant melanoma, with research-oriented bioactive substances representing a notable first step. The current study decided to expand on previous rhodoxanthin research by investigating the possible anti-tumor effect as well as the effect on the antioxidant status in the case of murine melanoma in an experimental model. The 21-day study was carried out on female C57BL/6J mice. On the first day of the experiment, they were subcutaneously inoculated with 106 B16F10 cells and were given rhodoxanthin orally until the end of the study. Rhodoxanthin supplementation significantly reduced tumor growth (42.18%) and weight (15.74%). Furthermore, the epidermal growth factor (EGF) activity was reduced and the concentration of 8-OHdG dropped in the treated melanoma-bearing mice compared to the untreated ones, demonstrating the role of rhodoxanthin in slowing tumor growth, one of the mechanisms being the reduction of EGF level and the decrease of DNA oxidation. The administration of rhodoxanthin determined variations in antioxidant enzymes, both at the plasma level and at the tissue level.

Abstract
Metamizole (dipyrone) is a widely used non-opioid analgesic in both human and animal medicine. Metamizole's safety has been the topic of numerous opposing debates, given the fact that in certain countries metamizole is frequently used as an over-the-counter (OTC) medicine, while in others it is banned due to the risk of agranulocytosis. Further, small mammals such as rabbits, ferrets, rodents, and hedgehogs have become some of the most common pets present in veterinary practice, and each of these species has specific analgesic needs due to their anatomy and physiology. The key to providing appropriate medical care is in finding a substance that has minimal negative effects. In small mammals, analgesia is an important factor and, it happens frequently that, pain in these patients is not well managed. Post-operative pain management is an important topic in the welfare of animals. The objectives of this review, thus, were to provide a concise overview of analgesics that are used in the treatment of postoperative pain in small mammals (e.g., rabbits and rodents) and to highlight the importance of this product, metamizole, in veterinary medicine, as well as the potential of this substance as an alternative analgesic for the treatment of postoperative pain in small mammals.

Abstract
Taxus baccata L., an evergreen tree, was known until recently due to its high concentration of toxic compounds. The purpose of the present study was to focus on the only non-poisonous part, the red arils, which have recently been described as an important source of various bioactive constituents. To establish total phenolic, flavonoid, and carotenoid content, antioxidant capacity, and cytotoxic properties, two types of extracts were obtained. The chemical profile of the ethanolic extract was evaluated using chromatographic (HPLC-DAD-ESI+) and spectral (UV-Vis) methods, and the antioxidant activity of the ethanolic extract was assessed using DPPH and FRAP assays, yielding moderate results. In the second type of extract (methanol: ethyl acetate: petroleum ether (1:1:1, v/v/v)) we identified three carotenoids using open column chromatography and RP–PAD–HPLC, with rhodoxanthin being the most abundant. Considering the above and mainly because of the lack of information in the literature about this pigment and its biological effects, we decided to further investigate the cytotoxic activity of rhodoxanthin, the main carotenoid presented in aril, and its protective effect against H2O2-induced oxidative stress using two cell lines: human HaCaT keratinocytes and B16F10 murine malignant melanoma. The MTT and Annexin-V Apoptosis assays showed a substantial cytotoxic potential expressed in a dose-dependent manner towards the melanoma cell line, however, no obvious cytotoxic effects on human keratinocytes were noticed.

Abstract
Although conventional medicine, chemical drug synthesis and pharmaceutical research are advancing at a rapid pace, nature remains a major supplier of biological molecules. Natural bioactive compounds are studied closely especially as an alternative to the limitations of conventional therapy in many diseases, melanoma being one of them. Malignant melanoma is a highly aggressive type of cancer, and the current methods of treatment used are cryotherapy, external surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, photodynamic therapy, biological therapy, and targeted drug therapy. Unfortunately, these treatment methods are often inefficient, extremely expensive and cause many side effects, which is why focusing on melanoma chemoprevention and adjuvant therapy with natural herbal phytoconstituents is an emerging strategy to prevent, cure or treat melanoma. This review aims to examine the latest discoveries in terms of potential natural bioactive compounds that possess important activity against the development and spread of murine melanoma cancer. In particular, the use of different phytochemicals such as phenolic acids, flavonoids, anthocyanins, terpenoids, essential oils and carotenoids in vitro and in vivo models will be discussed. These data are helpful in guiding researchers in the direction of studying phytonutrients with important effects in the prevention and treatment of melanoma.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Combretum micranthum G. Don (CM) is extensively used in traditional medicine throughout West Africa and commonly known as "long-life herbal tea" or "plant to heal". Further, traditional healers frequently use the title plant to mitigate of renal disorders. AIM OF THE STUDY To explore the nephroprotective property of standardised hydroalcoholic extract of Combretum micranthum in nicotinamide-streptozotocin induced diabetic nephropathy in rats. In addition, in-silico computational experiments were performed with bioactive compounds of the title plant against PPARα and PPARγ. MATERIAL AND METHODS Male rats were made diabetic by a single intraperitoneal (ip) injection of STZ (50 mg/kg), 15 min after ip administration of NA (100 mg/kg) dissolved in normal saline. The diabetic rats received CM extract (200 and 400 mg/kg p.o.) daily, for eight weeks. Body weights and blood glucose (non-fasting and fasting) of rats were measured weekly. Daily food and water consumption were also measured. After 8 weeks of treatment, urine biochemical parameters such as N-Acetyl-β-D-Glucosaminidase (NAG), urea (UR), uric acid (UA), creatinine (CRE), and serum markers of diabetes, kidney damage and liver damage such as insulin, lipid parameters), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and gamma-glutamyl transferase (γGT), albumin (Alb), magnesium (Mg2+), calcium (Ca2+), phosphorus (P), were estimated. Blood glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1C) were also estimated. kidney and liver were used for biochemical estimation of oxidative stress markers such as lipid peroxidation, superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activity. The kidney and pancreas were used for histopathological study. Further, HPLC chemoprofiling of CM extract and in-silico molecular simulation experiments were performed. RESULTS At the end of eight weeks, renal damage induced by the consequence of prolong diabetic condition was confirmed by altered levels of serum and urine kidney and liver function markers, oxidative stress markers and histopathological variations in kidney. Treatment with CM extract ameliorated the diabetes mellitus-induced renal biochemical parameters and histopathological changes. Further, HPLC-UV & MS experiments revealed that CM extract contains several bioactive compounds including hyperozide (62.35 μg/mg of extract) and quercitrin (19.07 μg/mg of extract). In-silico experiment exhibited cianidanol (-17.133), epicatechin (-15.107) exhibited higher docking score against PPARα and luteoforol (-11.038), epigallocatechin (-10.736) against PPARγ. Based on docking and drug likeness score, four bioactive compounds were selected for molecular dynamic experiments. Cianidanol and epigallocatechin out of the 30 compounds are concluded as a potential candidate for the treatment of DN through activating PPARα and PPARγ target protein. CONCLUSIONS Taken together, the present study provided the scientific footage for the traditional use of Combretum micranthum.

Abstract
Goat mastitis has become one of the most frequently diagnosed conditions in goat farms, with significant economic impact on the dairy industry. Inflammation of the mammary gland poses serious consequences on milk composition, with changes regarding biochemical parameters and oxidative stress markers. The aim of this paper is to present the most recent knowledge on the main biochemical changes that occur in the mastitic milk, as well as the overall effect of the oxidative and nitrosative stress on milk components, focusing on both enzymatic and nonenzymatic antioxidant markers. Mastitis in goats is responsible for a decrease in milk production, change in protein content with pronounced casein hydrolysis, and reduction in lactose concentration and milk fat. Milk enzymatic activity also undergoes changes, regarding indigenous enzymes and those involved in milk synthesis. Furthermore, during mastitis, both the electrical conductivity and the milk somatic cell count are increased. Intramammary infections are associated with a reduced milk antioxidant capacity and changes in catalase, lactoperoxidase, glutathione peroxidase or superoxide dismutase activity, as well as reduced antioxidant vitamin content. Mastitis is also correlated with an increase in the concentration of nitric oxide, nitrite, nitrate and other oxidation compounds, leading to the occurrence of nitrosative stress.

Abstract
Early detection of apoptotic cells on histological slides is of major importance for both diagnostic and research areas. In the current study, the aim was to propose a convenient method to stain the mitochondria and establish whether hepatocytes undergoing apoptosis can be identified in tissue sections using the proposed method. Liver tissue from five adult chinchillas was fixed with 10% neutral buffered formalin for Goldner's trichrome (GT) and Groat's iron hematoxylin and eosin (HE) stains and with Kolster's fixative for the Heidenhain's iron hematoxylin procedure. The HE and GT-stained sections showed the morphological features consistent with apoptosis i.e., homogenous intensely acidophilic cytoplasm, cell shrinkage with an irregular outline, nuclear shrinkage with cloudy karyoplasm, and karyopyknosis in the late stage. Sections stained with Heidenhain's iron hematoxylin method was used to pinpoint mitochondria and revealed cells which were undergoing the first stages of the apoptosis process i.e., disappearance of mitochondria from the cell, chromatin condensation and margination, paracentral localization of nucleoli, and vacuolated nuclei. In more advanced stages of apoptosis, cells presented significant nuclear and cytoplasmic changes. It was concluded that this is the first report targeting the mitochondria, by performing inexpensive histological staining techniques, in order to assess dead cells in situ.

Abstract
Despite the fact that a large number of chemotherapeutic anticancer agents have been discovered, cancer still remains a great cause of deaths worldwide. The purpose of our researches is to discover a new antitumor drug. In this aim, two new Cu(II) complexes, [Cu(L)2(py)2(H2O)2](C1) and [Cu(L)2(phen)](C2) with a new ligand, N-(5-trifluoromethyl-[1,3,4]-thiadiazole-2-yl)-benzensulfonamide(HL) were synthesized. The complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, spectral and magnetic determinations. The nuclease activity studies of the complexes confirm their capacity to cleavage the DNA molecule. Both complexes have in vitro antioxidant activity (DPPH, FRAP methods), in vitro (using xanthine /xanthine oxidase system) and in vivo (using S.cerevisiae)SOD mimetic activity.The results of MTT assay on two carcinoma cell lines (HeLa and WM35) indicate that both complexes have antitumor activity, but (C2) has a superior activity compared with (C1) and with Cisplatin. On normal fibroblast (HDFa), (C1) showed toxicity comparable with Cisplatin, but (C2) showed a lower one. Bacterial assays were also performed (by the disk diffusion method) and both complexes have antibacterial activity against S. aureus, E. coli, P. aeroginosa and B. cereus. All the biological studies are in concordance and show that both complexes have biologic activity but (C2)is much more active.

Abstract
After germination process, the green seedlings accumulate important quantities of bioactive compounds such as: enzymes, vitamins, minerals, chlorophylls and nutrients. The current study presents a comparison between different bioactive compounds and their antioxidant capacity, after the seedling germination and growth of five seeds (arugula, lentil, wheat, beans and mustard) both on soil, in a pot (natural system), and directly on cotton wool soaked, in water (artificial system). In this study the carotenoids content and the antioxidant capacity were analysed. The data of the present study showed that the highest amount of zeaxanthin and β - carotene was found in cultivars of wheat grown in natural system, while the highest antioxidant activity was found in cultivars of wheat, lentils and beans, though in this case with no statistical differences between the systems. The results show statistical differences between the values of bioactive compounds in the five types of seedlings but also in the values obtained for the same seedlings in different systems. The best cultivars for improving the nutritional quality for human consumption are wheat seedlings followed by lentil ones.

Abstract
Squamous cell carcinoma is a very rare type of urachal malignancy, only a few cases being reported in the medical literature. We present the case of a 49-year-old male patient diagnosed with infected squamous cell urachal carcinoma with multiple pulmonary metastases, after complaints of lower abdominal pain, abdominal mass and fever, without respiratory symptoms. The abdominal ultrasonography and the CT scan revealed a tumoral mass in the lower abdomen in contact with the abdominal wall and the urinary bladder dome, displacing the small bowel. Pulmonary nodular lesions were described in the left lobe pyramid. The intraoperative diagnosis was necrotic urachal tumor with urinary bladder dome invasion and suspected pulmonary metastases, and tumor ablation with bladder dome resection and suture of the bladder were performed. The histopathological result was poorly differentiated squamous cell carcinoma (G3), with negative resection margins. The patient recovered well after surgery, but the prognosis is very poor due to the metastatic stage in which the tumor was diagnosed, no standard chemotherapy regimen for the treatment of metastatic urachal carcinoma being known as effective until now.

Abstract
UNLABELLED BACKROUNDS/AIMS: Surgery remains the single hope for long-term survival long-term survival in pancreatic head carcinoma. Portal vein invasion is no longer a contraindication for resection but could be technically challenging. The aim of the present study is to emphasize the advantages of the posterior approach in duodenopancreatectomy with portal vein resection. METHODS The present series includes 16 patients with duodenopancreatectomy and portal/superior mesenteric vein resection and reconstruction duodenopancreatectomy invading the venous axis, performed from 2004 to 2011, and representing one author's experience. RESULTS A lateral resection with direct suture was performed in 10 patients and the length of the resected venous wall was less than 1.2 cm. A segmental resection was performed in six patients and the length of resected vein did not exceed 3 cm (range, 1.5 - 3 cm). All venous resection extremities were cancer-free at final pathological report. Eleven patients were considered as R0 resection while 5 patients were assessed as R1 at final pathological examination. Postoperative morbidity consisted of: 3 patients with postoperative pancreatic fistulae (grade A - 2 patients; grade C - 1 patient, requiring second look laparotomy for peri-pancreatic abscesses) and 5 patients with delayed gastric emptying grade B. CONCLUSION Portal/superior mesenteric vein resection during duodenopancreatectomy is safe and it is facilitated by the posterior approach. Moreover, the posterior approach facilitates total mesopancreas excision during duodenopancreatectomy for pancreatic head cancer, a technical feature that appears to be associated with an increased rate of negative resection margins.

Abstract
The spleen in rarely the place for solid, non-haematological tumors, isolated splenic metastases from adenocarcinomas being extremely rare findings, regardless of the origin and the histological type of the primary tumor. We present the case of a female patient with isolated splenic metastasis diagnosed by abdominal computer tomography at only 20 months after curative surgery for endometrial adenocarcinoma, in which the final diagnosis has been established by histological and immunohistochemical examination of the splenectomy piece. The haematogenous dissemination of the endometrial cancer occurs most commonly in the lungs, liver or bones, the spleen being rarely affected. In the medical literature there are cited up to date only 12 cases of solitary splenic metastasis from endometrial adenocarcinoma. The particularity of the case presented by us is the early appearance of an isolated splenic metastasis, at less than two years after curative surgery (compared to an average of 4-5 years cited in the literature), from an endometrial cancer which was classified histologicaly in the group with low-risk for relapse (well differentiated endometrioid adenocarcinoma). In conclusion, although solitary splenic secondary determinations are very rare, the incidence of the reported cases in the medical literature is increasing, their late appearance (a few years after the primary tumor's resection) and the lack of symptoms until the tumor reaches appreciable size or it complicates with necrosis, justifies the periodic abdominal imaging examination, on long-term, for postoperative monitorisation after the initial curative surgery. Their treatment of choice is open, classical splenectomy that must be followed by chemotherapy in order to prevent the development of other possible micrometastases.

Abstract
Background Due to their high level of genotypic and phenotypic variability, Mus spretus strains were introduced in laboratories to investigate the genetic determinism of complex phenotypes including quantitative trait loci. Mus spretus diverged from Mus musculus around 2.5 million years ago and exhibits on average a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in every 100 base pairs when compared with any of the classical laboratory strains. A genoproteomic approach was used to assess polymorphism of the major milk proteins between SEG/Pas and C57BL/6J, two inbred strains of mice representative of Mus spretus and Mus musculus species, respectively. Results The milk protein concentration was dramatically reduced in the SEG/Pas strain by comparison with the C57BL/6J strain (34 ± 9 g/L vs. 125 ± 12 g/L, respectively). Nine major proteins were identified in both milks using RP-HPLC, bi-dimensional electrophoresis and MALDI-Tof mass spectrometry. Two caseins (β and αs1) and the whey acidic protein (WAP), showed distinct chromatographic and electrophoresis behaviours. These differences were partly explained by the occurrence of amino acid substitutions and splicing variants revealed by cDNA sequencing. A total of 34 SNPs were identified in the coding and 3'untranslated regions of the SEG/Pas Csn1s1 (11), Csn2 (7) and Wap (8) genes. In addition, a 3 nucleotide deletion leading to the loss of a serine residue at position 93 was found in the SEG/Pas Wap gene. Conclusion SNP frequencies found in three milk protein-encoding genes between Mus spretus and Mus musculus is twice the values previously reported at the whole genome level. However, the protein structure and post-translational modifications seem not to be affected by SNPs characterized in our study. Splicing mechanisms (cryptic splice site usage, exon skipping, error-prone junction sequence), already identified in casein genes from other species, likely explain the existence of multiple αs1-casein isoforms both in SEG/Pas and C57BL/6J strains. Finally, we propose a possible mechanism by which the hallmark tandem duplication of a 18-nt exon (14 copies) may have occurred in the mouse genome.

Abstract
Intestinal occlusion due to intussusception produced by intestinal tumors is a very rare condition. Gastrointestinal stromal tumors are also rare digestive neopasias, with an impredictable malignant behavior, which are usually growing outside the intestinal wall, being rarely the initiators of an intestinal intussusception. We present the case of a 59 years old female, admitted in our hospital to elucidate the etiology of her iron deficient anaemia, which developed an intestinal occlusion at the intestinal preparation for colonoscopy. The abdominal CT scan performed in emergency conditions highlighted occlusive intestinal tumor complicated with intestinal intussusception. We performed an emergency laparotomy that revealed intestinal occlusion due to ileo-ileal intussusception produced by an ileal tumor. The surgical intervention consisted in segmental ileal enterectomy including the tumor with latero-lateral entero-enteral anastomosis. The patient recovered without complications. The histopathological and immunohisto-chemical examinations established the diagnose of gastro-intestinal stromal tumor with high risk malignant behavior, therefore the patient was guided in the oncological department for specific treatment and oncological surveillance.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Insulinoma is the most frequent neuroendocrine pancreatic tumor and is the main cause for hypoglicemia due to endogenous hyperinsulinism. We performed an analysis of a clinical series in order to study the clinical and biological spectrum of presentation, the preoperatory imagistic diagnosis and results of the surgical approach. Between 1986-2009, 30 patients with symptoms suggesting an insulinoma were hospitalized in our department. Preoperatory localization of insulinomas was possible in 16 patients. The most sensitive imagistic methods were ecoendoscopy and magnetic resonance. Intraoperatory ultrasound was performed in 16 patients and its sensitivity in detection of insulinomas was 93%; the combination between intraoperative ultrasound and manual exploration of pancreas by the surgeon reached a 100% sensitivity. Before the intraoperatory ultrasound was used the tumor excision was predominantly done by extensive pancreatic resection, while after this was available in our centre more conservative (enucleo-resection) procedures were chosen. In 1 patient the resection was done by laparoscopy, and in 1 patient by robotic surgery. The dimensions of the tumor were less than 2 cm in most of the patients; 2 had nesidioblastosis and 2 had multiple insulinomas; all 28 patients proved to have benign insulinomas at histological specimens. Following surgery, the symptoms disappear in all patients. The most common complication following extensive pancreatic resections was acute pancreatitis, while after enucleation pancreatic fistula occurred more frequently. CONCLUSIONS Due to small dimensions, the preoperative diagnosis of insulinomas is usually difficult, ecoendoscopy being the most sensitive method. Intraoperative ultrasound is essential for insulinoma localization and for chosing the optimal type of excision. Enucleation is the resection method to be chosen whenever this it is technical possible. In benign insulinomas the prognosis is excellent, surgical resection being curative in all cases.

Abstract
The PRM/Alf inbred mice exhibit a huge intestinal lengthening. Since milk contains bioactive factors implied in numerous biological processes, one hypothesis is that PRM/Alf milk contains intestinotrophic factors contributing to this remarkable phenotype. A comparison between the milk from PRM/Alf and C57BL/6J (as a control) strains could be helpful in the identification of such factors, including proteins. However, a complete description of the mouse milk major protein fraction is still missing. Hence we adapted a reliable technique to separate and identify the major mouse milk proteins. This approach was achieved through the protein study of milk from C57BL/6J and PWK/Pas strains representative of two Mus musculus subspecies, M. m. domesticus and M. m. musculus respectively. C57BL/6J milk samples were first skimmed and fractionated by reverse phase-HPLC (RP-HPLC). The protein content of each chromatographic peak was analysed by SDS-PAGE and identified by mass spectrometry. This methodological approach allowed characterization of nine major mouse milk proteins: alpha(s1), beta, gamma, epsilon and kappa-caseins, Whey Acidic Protein, lactoferrin, Serum Albumin, Fatty Acid Binding Protein, as well as an alpha(s1)-casein isoform. Then, RP-HPLC patterns of C57BL/6J milk proteins were compared with those obtained starting from the milk of PWK/Pas females. This comparison revealed a protein polymorphism for the alpha(s1)-casein.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Angiodysplasia (AD) of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract is a rare cause of surgical GI bleeding. It frequently poses difficult problems in diagnosis and treatment. The purpose of this study is to find answers to these problems for a better management of the AD patients. MATERIALS From 1982 to 2006 a total of 75 patients suffering of AD of the GI tract were operated in our center. They represent about 3.6% of total patients operated for GI bleeding in the same period. The age of the patients was between 9 and 81 years old, with two peaks: one between 21 and 40 years old and the other between 51 and 70 years old. The localisation of the lesions was: righ colon +/- ileum 31 patients (41.33%), stomach 13 patients (17.33%), jejunum 6 patients (8%), descendent colon +/- sigmoid 5 patients (6.66%), rectum 4 patients (5.33%), pan-colonic 4 patients (5.33%), sigmoid colon 2 patients (2.66%), cecum + transverse colon 2 patients (2.66%), ileum 2 patients (2.66%), sigmoid colon + jejunum 1 patient (1.33%), cecum + sigmoid colon 1 patient (1.33%), cecum +/- sigmoid colon + jejunum 1 patient (1.33%), jejunum + ileum 1 patient (1.33%), pan-colonic + rectum 1 patient (1.33%). According to Moore classifications 29 patients were type 1 (38%) and 45 patients were type 2 (60%). In one patient AD was associated with Crohn disease (type 4 Fowler). RESULTS The main symptom in AD was repetitive GI bleeding, of various amplitude, often obscure in origin, the patients having many hospital entries. The medical examination that give us the best help was selective angiography which was positive in 34 of 40 patients (85%). Upper and lower endoscopy were give to 50 surgical patients, being diagnostic in 32 (64%). Histopathologic examinations confirm the diagnosis of AD in all cases, without using injection techniques. All patients were operated for symptomatic AD. Other 11 patients non included in this study were find to have angiodysplastic lesions on operatory specimens for other diseases. The main indications for operative in AD were: continuing digestive hemorrhage of growing amplitude with detected source (54 patients = 72%), inefficient endoscopic and angiographic hemostasis (8 patients = 10.66%) and patients with massive bleeding without any preoperative evaluation (13 patients = 17%). Intraoperative exploration produced little information because of the mucosal and submucosal localisation of the lesions. Operative panendoscopy was the most rewarding investigation. Various types of resections were practiced depending on the site(s) known or presumed of the lesions. Perioperative morbidity was 23% (21 patients), rebleeding being in 4 patients (5.33%). Perioperative mortality was 12% (9 patients) a consequence of advanced age, comorbid conditions and frequent extreme emergency of the operations. CONCLUSIONS Although rare as a cause of surgical digestive bleeding, AD poses often difficult problems of diagnosis and treatment. In patients with GI bleeding, without evident cause, multiple investigated, especially elderly but not always, we must think of an AD.

Abstract
Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST) are rare neoplasias, but they represent the most common non-epithelial (mesenchymal) tumor of the digestive tract. GISTs originate in an intestinal pacemaker cell called the intestinal cell of Cajal and express the cell-surface receptor KIT (CD117). They were first defined as a separate category in 1983, and since then important data regarding their clinical behavior, histopathological particularities, immunohistopathology, molecular biology and therapeutic possibilities were reported. In this article we aim to present a review of the information concerning this subject available in the medical literature at the moment.

Abstract
Gastrointestinal stromal tumors are the most frequent non-epithelial digestive tumors, being classified in the group of primitive mesenchymal tumors of the digestive tract. These tumors have a non predictable evolution and where stratified regarding the risk for malignant behavior in 4 categories: very low risk, low risk, intermediate risk and high risk. We performed a retrospective non randomised study including the patients with gastrointestinal stromal tumors treated in the Department of General Surgery and Liver Transplantation of Fundeni Clinical Institute in the period January 2002 - June 2007, to define the epidemiological, clinico-paraclinical, histological and especially evolutive features of the gastrointestinal stromal tumors from this group, with a special regard to the risk factors for their malignant behavior. The most important risk factors in gastrointestinal stromal tumors are the tumor size and the mitotic index, based on them being realised the classification of Fletcher in the 4 risk categories mentioned above. In our group all the local advanced or metastatic gastrointestinal stromal tumors, regardless of their location, were classified in the group of high risk for the malignant behavior. The gastric location and the epithelioid type were positive prognostic factors, and the complete resection of the tumor, an other important positive prognostic feature, was possible in about 80% of the cases, probably because the gastrointestinal stromal tumors in our study were diagnosed in less advanced evolutive situations, only about one third being metastatic and about 14% being locally advanced at the time of diagnose. The association with other neoplasias was in our cases insignificant, only 5% of the patients presenting concomitant malignant digestive tumors and 7.6% intraabdominal benign tumors. Gastrointestinal stromal tumors remain a challenge for the medical staff, regarding their diagnose and therapeutical management, the stratification of the risk for their malignant behavior being essential for the evolution of these patients.

Abstract
Environmental iodine deficiency continues to be a significant public health problem worldwide. On the other hand, iodide excess results principally from the use of iodine-containing medicinal preparations or radiographic contrast media. For this reason we intended to explore iodide excess impairment on prooxidant/antioxidant balance of the thyroid gland, hepatic tissue and in blood and the effect of selenium administration on oxidative stress markers under the same circumstances. Experiments were performed for 10 days with white, male, Wistar rats, as follows: group 1: control-normal iodine supply group; 2: high iodine diet, group; 3: high iodine diet and selenium; group 4: high iodine diet and Carbimasole. Oxidative stress markers such as lipid peroxides were determined in thyroid gland, hepatic tissue and in blood. Measuring H+ donor ability of the sera and catalase activity in thyroid gland and in hepatic tissue assessed antioxidant defense. Iodide excess had prooxidant effects, leading to an increased lipid peroxides level and catalase activity in target tissues and in blood and to a decreased H+ donor ability of the sera. Selenium supplementation had opposite effects. Present data allow us to conclude that the alterations due to iodide excess in thyroid gland, hepatic tissue and in blood are mediated through oxidative stress.

Abstract
Serous borderline tumours of the ovary represent a heterogeneous group of epithelial ovarian neoplasm. They are usually associated with a favourable outcome. Some of them have a worse prognosis. The most important prognostic factor is represented by the association with peritoneal implants (non-invasive and invasive). Tumours associated with noninvasive implants have an excellent prognosis and tumours associated with invasive implants have a fatal outcome. This article presents 15 serous borderline ovarian tumours, 12 associated with peritoneal implants, 2 of them with invasive implants and 10 with non-invasive implants. The authors present the main microscopic criteria for the diagnosis of peritoneal implants, their histogenesis and the importance for the management of these tumours.

Abstract
Aorto-esophageal fistula is a rare entity, determining huge digestive bleeding with a very poor prognostic most often. We present the case of a patient with aorto-esophageal fistula of unknown origin, treated successfully in the Center of Surgery and Liver Transplantation from Fundeni Clinical Institute. A young man, 21 years old, was admitted in our clinic from another hospital for repetitive severe upper gastrointestinal bleeding, with hematemesis and melena, pale, asthenia, without any pain; the bleeding stopped when he was admitted. The upper digestive endoscopy and esophago-gastro-duodenal radioscopy with barium did not show any lesion. During the 7th day the patient presents sudden massive hematemesis with hemodynamic instability; during the surgery we found two subcardial ulcers (stress ulcers?) for which we have done excision and suture which temporary stopped the bleeding. After 14 days, the patient had another massive bleeding; the upper endoscopy shows 28 cm far from the dental arch a protrusive formation of 6-7 mm with a telangiectasis aspect and with a white spot (possibly a central ulceration); 1 ml pure alcohol was injected inside it with temporary bleeding ceasing. After 3 days the patient is bleeding again, with marked decrease in blood pressure; a Blakemore tube stopped the bleeding until surgery was performed. During the intervention an aorto-oesophageal fistula is detected; we made the excision of the fistula with simple suture of the aorta, subtotal esophagectomy, cervico-stoma and gastrostomy, with good postoperative evolution. After 4 months the digestive transit is restored by esophagoplasty with tubulized stomach placed behind the sternum. The diagnostic and treatment difficulties encountered in these kind of cases need to consider also an aorto-esophageal fistula diagnosis, especially for the cases with Chiari triad (mild thoracic pain, sentinel digestive bleeding and exsanguination). The Blakemore tube can save patient's life by ensuring temporary hemostasis and allowing the time for a definitive surgical intervention. The subtotal esophagectomy with cervicostoma and feeding gastrostomy, followed after few months by a esophageal reconstruction , is a solution for this extreme severe cases.
