Abstract
OBJECTIVE Thiazides are the first-line treatment for hypertension, however, they have been associated with hospitalizations for thiazide-associated hyponatremia (TAH). The aim of this study was to evaluate the risk of TAH and other drug-associated hyponatremia in a Korean population. METHODS The study used big data from the National Health Insurance Sharing Service of 1,943,345 adults treated for hypertension from January 2014 to December 2016. The participants were divided into two groups based on the use of thiazides. Cox proportional hazard models were used to identify independent risk factors for the occurrence of hyponatremia. RESULTS The study found that hyponatremia-related hospitalizations were significantly higher in the thiazide group than the control group (2.19% vs. 1.45%). The risk increased further with concurrent use of other diuretics or desmopressin, and thiazide+spironolactone+desmopressin and hospitalization risk further increased (4.0 and 6.9 times). Multivariate analysis showed that hyponatremia occurrence increased with age, diabetes mellitus, depression, and thiazide use (hazard ratio = 1.436, p < 0.001). The thiazide group had better 6-year overall survival than the control group but had more fractures and hyponatremia. CONCLUSIONS Thiazide use is associated with an increased risk of hyponatremia and related complications. However, the mortality rate decreased in those who received thiazides, suggesting that thiazide use itself is not harmful and may help decrease complications and improve prognosis with proper, cautious use in high-risk patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The relationship between assisted reproductive techniques (ART) and the risk of asthma and allergic rhinitis (AR) is controversial. Thus, we aimed to investigate the relationship between ART and the risk of asthma and AR in a nationwide, large-scale birth cohort. PATIENTS AND METHODS This study utilized the National Health Insurance Service data in South Korea to conduct a nationwide, large-scale, population-based birth cohort. We included all infants born between 2017 and 2018. AR, asthma, food allergies, and atopic dermatitis were defined using the International Classification of Diseases tenth edition codes. Asthma was classified as allergic or non-allergic based on accompanying allergic diseases (AR, food allergy, or atopic dermatitis). Using 1:10 propensity score matching, we compared infants conceived through ART with those conceived naturally (non-ART). After matching, logistic regression was used to compare the hazard ratio for asthma and AR between the two groups. RESULTS We included 543,178 infants [male infants, 280,194 (51.38%)]. After matching, 8,925 and 74,229 infants were selected for the ART and non-ART groups, respectively. The ART group showed a decreased risk of asthma in the offspring [adjusted hazard ratio (aHR), 0.45; 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.41-0.48]. Similarly, for AR, being conceived by ART was associated with a decreased risk of AR (aHR, 0.25; 95% CI, 0.12-0.37). ART offspring showed a decreased risk of asthma and AR in offspring compared to that observed in non-ART offspring. CONCLUSIONS Our study offers important insights for clinicians, researchers, and parents regarding the health outcomes of ART-conceived infants and enhances our understanding of ART's impact on respiratory health.

Abstract
Human milk oligosaccharides (HMO) affect gut microbiota during neonatal development, particularly with respect to the immune system. Bovine milk-based infant formulas have low oligosaccharide contents. Thus, efforts to fortify infant formulas with HMO are being undertaken. Two major HMO, 2'-fucosyllactose (2'-FL) and 6'-sialyllactose (6'-SL), exert anti-inflammatory effects; however, the associations between anti-inflammatory effects induced by 2'-FL and 6'-SL co-treatment and gut microbiota composition and metabolite modulation remain unclear. Therefore, in this study, we evaluated the effects of a mixture of these HMO. To determine the optimal HMO ratio for anti-inflammatory effects and elucidate its mode of action, LPS-induced inflammatory HT-29 epithelial cells and intestinal inflamed suckling mice were treated with various mixtures of 2'-FL and 6'-SL. 2'-FL:6'-SL ratio of 5:1 was identified as the most effective pre-treatment HMO mixture in vitro; thus, this ratio was selected and used for low, middle, and high-dose treatments for subsequent in vivo studies. In vivo, high-dose HMO treatment restored LPS-induced inflammation symptoms, such as body weight loss, colon length reduction, histological structural damage, and intestinal gene expression related to inflammatory responses. High-dose HMO was the only treatment that modulated the major phyla Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes and the genera Ihubacter, Mageeibacillus, and Saccharofermentans. These changes in microbial composition were correlated with intestinal inflammation-related gene expression and short-chain fatty acid production. To our knowledge, our study is the first to report the effects of Ihubacter, Mageeibacillus, and Saccharofermentans on short chain fatty acid levels, which can subsequently affect inflammatory cytokine and tight junction protein levels. Conclusively, the HMO mixture exerted anti-inflammatory effects through changes in microbiota and metabolite production. These findings suggested that supplementation of infant formula with HMO may benefit formula-fed infants by forming unique microbiota contributing to neonatal development.

Abstract
Histone deacetylase inhibitors (iHDACs) have been extensively studied as enhancers of therapeutic protein production in recombinant Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) (rCHO) cell cultures. However, the addition of iHDACs reduces the viable cell concentration (VCC) in rCHO cell cultures, thereby reducing their potential to enhance therapeutic protein production. To mitigate the negative effects of iHDACs on VCC, screening using a clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)/CRISPR-associated protein 9 (Cas9)-based single-gene knockout (KO) library in rCHO cells was performed in the presence of CI994, a member of iHDACs, and 10 potential KO genes that enhanced the VCC of CI994-treated rCHO cells were identified. Among these, Bcor was validated as a promising KO target that improved VCC without negatively affecting the specific productivity in the presence of CI994. Bcor KO increased the VCC and therapeutic protein concentrations in both batch and fed-batch cultures in the presence of CI994. Taken together, these findings highlight the potential of the whole-genome CRISPR/Cas9-based single-gene KO cell library to identify KO target genes for the development of iHDAC-resistant rCHO cells for enhanced therapeutic protein production.

Abstract
Polybutylene succinate (PBS) stands out as a promising biodegradable polymer, drawing attention for its potential as an eco-friendly alternative to traditional plastics due to its biodegradability and reduced environmental impact. In this study, we aimed to enhance PBS degradation by examining artificial consortia composed of bacterial strains. Specifically, Terribacillus sp. JY49, Bacillus sp. JY35, and Bacillus sp. NR4 were assessed for their capabilities and synergistic effects in PBS degradation. When only two types of strains, Bacillus sp. JY35 and Bacillus sp. NR4, were co-cultured as a consortium, a notable increase in degradation activity toward PBS was observed compared to their activities alone. The consortium of Bacillus sp. JY35 and Bacillus sp. NR4 demonstrated a remarkable degradation yield of 76.5% in PBS after 10 days. The degradation of PBS by the consortium was validated and our findings underscore the potential for enhancing PBS degradation and the possibility of fast degradation by forming artificial consortia, leveraging the synergy between strains with limited PBS degradation activity. Furthermore, this study demonstrated that utilizing only two types of strains in the consortium facilitates easy control and provides reproducible results. This approach mitigates the risk of losing activity and reproducibility issues often associated with natural consortia.

Abstract
With the emerging novel biotherapeutics that are typically difficult-to-express (DTE), improvement is required for high-yield production. To identify novel targets that can enhance DTE protein production, we performed genome-wide fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS)-based clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR) knockout screening in bispecific antibody (bsAb)-producing Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells. The screen identified the two highest-scoring genes, Atf7ip and Setdb1, which are the binding partners for H3K9me3-mediated transcriptional repression. The ATF7IP-SETDB1 complex knockout in bsAb-producing CHO cells suppressed cell growth but enhanced productivity by up to 2.7-fold. Decreased H3K9me3 levels and an increased transcriptional expression level of the transgene were also observed. Furthermore, perturbation of the ATF7IP-SETDB1 complex in monoclonal antibody (mAb)-producing CHO cells led to substantial improvements in mAb production, increasing the productivity by up to 3.9-fold without affecting the product quality. Taken together, the genome-wide FACS-based CRISPR screen identified promising targets associated with histone methylation, whose perturbation enhanced the productivity by unlocking the transgene expression.

Abstract
Gyrokinetic simulations of the fishbone instability in DIII-D tokamak plasmas find that self-generated zonal flows can dominate the nonlinear saturation by preventing coherent structures from persisting or drifting in the energetic particle phase space when the mode frequency down-chirps. Results from the simulation with zonal flows agree quantitatively, for the first time, with experimental measurements of the fishbone saturation amplitude and energetic particle transport. Moreover, the fishbone-induced zonal flows are likely responsible for the formation of an internal transport barrier that was observed after fishbone bursts in this DIII-D experiment. Finally, gyrokinetic simulations of a related ITER baseline scenario show that the fishbone induces insignificant energetic particle redistribution and may enable high performance scenarios in ITER burning plasma experiments.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous studies have predominantly focused on smartphone overdependence among adolescents and young adults. However, as smartphone usage has recently surged among South Korean middle-aged and older adults, the risk of smartphone overdependence cannot be overlooked among this population. Therefore, this study was conducted to examine the smartphone usage pattern and the associated risk of overdependence in this specific age group. METHODS The data for individuals who aged 50 or older were extracted from the dataset of a nationwide survey, "The Survey on Smartphone Overdependence, 2021," and the usage of each type of smartphone content and risk of smartphone overdependence among individuals in their 50 s and 60 s were investigated. Age-group-based differences in demographic characteristics, Smartphone Overdependence Scale scores, self-awareness of smartphone overdependence, digital literacy, and psychosocial factors were analyzed. Additionally, a multivariable logistic regression analysis was conducted to explore the factors associated with the potential-to-high risk of smartphone overdependence in both age groups. RESULTS Individuals in their 50s had significantly higher digital literacy, social relations, life satisfaction, and smartphone overdependence scores than those in their 60s, and the percentage of individuals in the high-risk group was also higher in the 50s age group. For both age groups, the most used content was "messenger," "news," and "movies/TV/videos," whereas the least used content was e-learning, gambling, and adult content. The multivariable analysis indicated that, for individuals in their 50s, having a lower educational level was associated with significantly higher odds, whereas having a job and utilizing e-commerce-related contents on smartphone were associated with significantly lower odds of potential-to-high risk for smartphone overdependence. Concerning individuals in their 60s, having a lower educational level and using adult content or gambling were significantly associated with higher odds of potential-to-high risk for smartphone overdependence. CONCLUSION This study reveals the risk of smartphone overdependence among middle-aged and older adults in South Korea as well as the associated risk factors. This will assist policymakers in developing policies for the appropriate use of smartphones by these age groups.

Abstract
To alleviate environmental problems caused by using conventional plastics, bioplastics have garnered significant interest as alternatives to petroleum-based plastics. Despite possessing better degradability traits compared to traditional plastics, the degradation of bioplastics still demands a longer duration than initially anticipated. This necessitates the utilization of degradation strains or enzymes to enhance degradation efficiency, ensuring timely degradation. In this study, a novel screening method to identify bioplastic degraders faster was suggested to circumvent the time-consuming and laborious characteristics of solid-based plate assays. This liquid-based colorimetric method confirmed the extracellular esterase activity with p-nitrophenyl esters. It eliminated the needs to prepare plastic emulsion plates at the initial screening system, shortening the time for the overall screening process and providing more quantitative data. p-nitrophenyl hexanoate (C6) was considered the best substrate among the various p-nitrophenyl esters as substrates. The screening was performed in liquid-based 96-well plates, resulting in the discovery of a novel strain, Bacillus sp. SH09, with a similarity of 97.4% with Bacillus licheniformis. Furthermore, clear zone assays, degradation investigations, scanning electron microscopy, and gel permeation chromatography were conducted to characterize the biodegradation capabilities of the new strain, the liquid-based approach offered a swift and less labor-intensive option during the initial stages.

Abstract
There are limited data on outcomes after implantation of everolimus-eluting stents (EES) in East Asian patients with small vessel coronary lesions. A total of 1,600 patients treated with XIENCE EES (Abbott Vascular, CA, USA) were divided into the small vessel group treated with one ≤2.5 mm stent (n=119) and the non-small vessel group treated with one ≥2.75 mm stent (n=933). The primary end point was a patient-oriented composite outcome (POCO), a composite of all-cause death, myocardial infarction (MI), and any repeat revascularization at 12 months. The key secondary end point was a device-oriented composite outcome (DOCO), a composite of cardiovascular death, target-vessel MI, and target lesion revascularization at 12 months. The small vessel group was more often female, hypertensive, less likely to present with ST-elevation MI, and more often treated for the left circumflex artery, whereas the non-small vessel group more often had type B2/C lesions, underwent intravascular ultrasound, and received unfractionated heparin. In the propensity matched cohort, the mean stent diameter was 2.5±0.0 mm and 3.1±0.4 mm in the small and non-small vessel groups, respectively. Propensity-adjusted POCO at 12 months was 6.0% in the small vessel group and 4.3% in the non-small vessel group (p=0.558). There was no significant difference in DOCO at 12 months (small vessel group: 4.3% and non-small vessel group: 1.7%, p=0.270). Outcomes of XIENCE EES for small vessel disease were comparable to those for non-small vessel disease at 12-month clinical follow-up in real-world Korean patients.

Abstract
Korean Renal Data System (KORDS) is a nationwide end-stage renal disease (ESRD) registry database operated by the Korean Society of Nephrology (KSN). Diabetes mellitus is currently the leading cause of ESRD in Korea; this article provides an update on the trends and characteristics of diabetic ESRD patients. The KORDS Committee of KSN collects data on dialysis centers and patients through an online registry program. Here, we analyzed the status and trends in characteristics of diabetic chronic kidney disease stage 5D (CKD 5D) patients using data from 2001 to 2021. In 2021, the dialysis adequacy of hemodialysis (HD) was lower in diabetic CKD 5D patients than in nondiabetic CKD 5D patients, while that of peritoneal dialysis (PD) was similar. Diabetic CKD 5D patients had a higher proportion of cardiac and vascular diseases and were more frequently admitted to hospitals than nondiabetic CKD 5D patients, and the leading cause of death was cardiac disease. From 2001 to 2020, diabetic CKD 5D patients had a higher mortality rate than nondiabetic CKD 5D patients, but in 2021 this trend was reversed. Diabetic PD patients had the highest mortality rate over 20 years. The mortality rate of diabetic HD patients was higher than that of nondiabetic HD patients until 2019 but became lower starting in 2020. There was a decreasing trend in mortality rate in diabetic CKD 5D patients, but cardiac and vascular diseases were still prevalent in diabetic CKD 5D patients with frequent admissions to hospitals. More specialized care is needed to improve the clinical outcomes of diabetic CKD 5D patients.

Abstract
In vitro fabrication of 3D cell culture systems that could provide in vivo tissue-like, structural, and biochemical environments to neural cells is essential not only for fundamental studies on brain function and behavior, but also for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine applicable to neural injury and neurodegenerative diseases. In particular, for astrocytes-which actively respond to the surroundings and exhibit varied morphologies based on stimuli (e.g., stiffness and chemicals) in vitro, as well as physiological or pathological conditions in vivo-it is crucial to establish an appropriate milieu in in vitro culture platforms. Herein, we report the induction of in vivo-relevant, stellate-shaped astrocytes derived from cortices of Rattus norvegicus by constructing the 3D cell culture systems of brain-derived, decellularized extracellular matrices (bdECMs). The bdECM hydrogels were mechanically stable and soft, and the bdECM-based 3D scaffolds supplied biochemically active environments that astrocytes could interact with, leading to the development of in vivo-like stellate structures. In addition to the distinct morphology with actively elongated endfeet, the astrocytes, cultured in 3D bdECM scaffolds, would have neurosupportive characteristics, indicated by the accelerated neurite outgrowth in the astrocyte-conditioned media. Furthermore, next-generation sequencing showed that the gene expression profiles of astrocytes cultured in bdECMs were significantly different from those cultured on 2D surfaces. The stellate-shaped astrocytes in the bdECMs were analyzed to have reached a more mature state, for instance, with decreased expression of genes for scaffold ECMs, actin filaments, and cell division. The results suggest that the bdECM-based 3D culture system offers an advanced platform for culturing primary cortical astrocytes and their mixtures with other neural cells, providing a brain-like, structural and biochemical milieu that promotes the maturity and in vivo-like characteristics of astrocytes in both form and gene expression. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Decellularized extracellular matrices (dECMs) have emerged as strong candidates for the construction of three-dimensional (3D) cell cultures in vitro, owing to the potential to provide native biochemical and physical environments. In this study, we fabricated hydrogels of brain-derived dECMs (bdECMs) and cultured primary astrocytes within the bdECM hydrogels in a 3D context. The cultured astrocytes exhibited a stellate morphology distinct from conventional 2D cultures, featuring tridimensionally elongated endfeet. qRT-PCR and NGS-based transcriptomic analyses revealed gene expression patterns indicative of a more mature state, compared with the 2D culture. Moreover, astrocytes cultured in bdECMs showed neurosupportive characteristics, as demonstrated by the accelerated neurite outgrowth in astrocyte-conditioned media. We believe that the bdECM hydrogel-based culture system can serve as an in vitro model system for astrocytes and their coculture with other neural cells, holding significant potential for neural engineering and therapeutic applications.

Abstract
We search for energetic electron recoil signals induced by boosted dark matter (BDM) from the galactic center using the COSINE-100 array of NaI(Tl) crystal detectors at the Yangyang Underground Laboratory. The signal would be an excess of events with energies above 4 MeV over the well-understood background. Because no excess of events are observed in a 97.7 kg·yr exposure, we set limits on BDM interactions under a variety of hypotheses. Notably, we explored the dark photon parameter space, leading to competitive limits compared to direct dark photon search experiments, particularly for dark photon masses below 4 MeV and considering the invisible decay mode. Furthermore, by comparing our results with a previous BDM search conducted by the Super-Kamionkande experiment, we found that the COSINE-100 detector has advantages in searching for low-mass dark matter. This analysis demonstrates the potential of the COSINE-100 detector to search for MeV electron recoil signals produced by the dark sector particle interactions.

Abstract
Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells are the preferred mammalian host cells for therapeutic protein production that have been extensively engineered to possess the desired attributes for high-yield protein production. However, empirical approaches for identifying novel engineering targets are laborious and time-consuming. Here, we established a genome-wide CRISPR/Cas9 screening platform for CHO-K1 cells with 111,651 guide RNAs (gRNAs) targeting 21,585 genes using a virus-free recombinase-mediated cassette exchange-based gRNA integration method. Using this platform, we performed a positive selection screening under hyperosmotic stress conditions and identified 180 genes whose perturbations conferred resistance to hyperosmotic stress in CHO cells. Functional enrichment analysis identified hyperosmotic stress responsive gene clusters, such as tRNA wobble uridine modification and signaling pathways associated with cell cycle arrest. Furthermore, we validated 32 top-scoring candidates and observed a high rate of hit confirmation, demonstrating the potential of the screening platform. Knockout of the novel target genes, Zfr and Pnp, in monoclonal antibody (mAb)-producing recombinant CHO (rCHO) cells and bispecific antibody (bsAb)-producing rCHO cells enhanced their resistance to hyperosmotic stress, thereby improving mAb and bsAb production. Overall, the collective findings demonstrate the value of the screening platform as a powerful tool to investigate the functions of genes associated with hyperosmotic stress and to discover novel targets for rational cell engineering on a genome-wide scale in CHO cells.

Abstract
Background The prognosis of end-of-life patients is challenging, and clinicians have attempted to predict survival more accurately. High serum creatinine (sCr) levels are associated with lower survival rates in patients with various cancers; however, low sCr levels are commonly expected in patients with terminal cancer because of muscle wasting and malnutrition. Therefore, we investigated the prevalence of low and high sCr levels and their association with survival duration in patients with terminal cancer in a palliative care unit. Methods We analyzed the medical records of 280 patients admitted to a palliative care unit. Patients were divided into low (<0.5 mg/dL), normal (0.5-1.2 mg/dL), and high (>1.2 mg/dL) sCr groups. Kaplan-Meier survival curves using sCr levels were plotted and compared using the log-rank test. Using stepwise selection, a multivariable Cox proportional hazards model was used to identify the significant prognostic factors. Results The median survival durations in the high-, low-, and normal-sCr groups were 9.57 days, 22.26 days, and 27.51 days, respectively. Multivariable Cox proportional hazard model identified that males (hazard ratio [HR], 1.81; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.16-2.85), poor performance status (HR, 3.43; 95% CI, 1.12-10.54), total parenteral nutrition use (HR, 1.84; 95% CI, 1.09-3.1), high sCr (HR, 2.74; 95% CI, 1.52-4.94), and low sCr (HR, 1.22; 95% CI, 1.07-1.43) were significantly associated with a shorter survival time. Conclusion Low and high serum creatinine levels were significantly associated with poor survival in patients with cancer at the end-of-life stage. Therefore, readily available and simple biomarkers may help plan advanced care in palliative care settings.

Abstract
To prevent the spread of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, vaccines have been authorized for emergency use and implemented worldwide. We present a case of de novo glomerulonephritis (GN) after use of the COVID-19 mRNA vaccine BNT162b2. A 48-year-old man with no relevant medical history was referred for sudden and persistent worsening of renal insufficiency 1.5 months after the second vaccine dose. He had arthralgia and skin rash a week after vaccination. Abdominal pain and diarrhea started 2 weeks later, and he was admitted to the hospital for enteritis treatment. Colonoscopy showed multiple ulcerations and petechiae suggestive of vasculitis in the terminal ileum. After prednisolone therapy, his gastrointestinal symptoms improved, but his renal function continued to deteriorate. Based on kidney biopsy findings and nephrotic-range proteinuria (5,306 mg/24 hours), he was diagnosed with anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic autoantibody (ANCA)-negative pauci-immune crescentic GN (CrGN). He received high-dose steroid pulse therapy and oral cyclophosphamide, and then, gradually underwent steroid tapering, with improvement in proteinuria and renal function over several weeks. Several cases of GN suspected to be related to COVID-19 vaccines have been reported. To our knowledge, this is the first case report of ANCA-negative pauci-immune crescentic CrGN with extrarenal involvement after COVID-19 mRNA vaccination. Our finding expands the spectrum of COVID-19 vaccine-associated GN.

Abstract
Genes encoding subunits of the SWI/SNF or BAF ATP-dependent chromatin remodeling complex are among the most enriched for deleterious de novo mutations in intellectual disabilities and autism spectrum disorder, but the causative molecular pathways are not fully known 1,2 . Synaptic activity in neurons is critical for learning and memory and proper neural development 3 . Neural activity prompts calcium influx and transcription within minutes, facilitated in the nucleus by various transcription factors (TFs) and chromatin modifiers 4 . While BAF is required for activity-dependent developmental processes such as dendritic outgrowth 5-7 , the immediate molecular consequences of neural activity on BAF complexes and their functions are unknown. Here we mapped minute-scale biochemical consequences of neural activity, modeled by membrane depolarization of embryonic mouse primary cortical neurons, on BAF complexes. We used acute chemical perturbations of BAF ATPase activity and kinase signaling to define the activity-dependent effects on BAF complexes and activity-dependent BAF functions. Our studies found that BAF complexes change in subunit composition and are selectively phosphorylated within 10 minutes of depolarization. Increased levels of the core PBAF subunit Baf200/ Arid2 , uniquely containing an RFX-like DNA-binding domain, are concurrent with ATPase-dependent opening of chromatin at RFX/X-box motifs. Changes in BAF composition and phosphorylation lead to the regulation of chromatin accessibility for critical neurogenesis TFs. These biochemical effects are a convergent phenomenon downstream of multiple growth factor signaling pathways in mouse neurons and fibroblasts suggesting that BAF integrates signaling information from the membrane. In support of such a membrane-to-nucleus signaling cascade, we also identified a BAF-interacting kinase, Dclk2, whose inhibition attenuates BAF phosphorylation selectively. Our findings support a direct role of BAF complexes in responding to synaptic activity to regulate TF binding and transcription.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Bioplastics are attracting considerable attention, owing to the increase in non-degradable waste. Using microorganisms to degrade bioplastics is a promising strategy for reducing non-degradable plastic waste. However, maintaining bacterial viability and activity during culture and storage remains challenging. With the use of conventional methods, cell viability and activity was lost; therefore, these conditions need to be optimized for the practical application of microorganisms in bioplastic degradation. Therefore, we aimed to optimize the feasibility of the lyophilization method for convenient storage and direct use. In addition, we incoporated protective reagents to increase the viability and activity of lyophilized microorganisms. By selecting and applying the best protective reagents for the lyophilization process and the effects of additives on the growth and PHB-degrading activity of strains were analyzed after lyophilization. For developing the lyophilization method for protecting degradation activity, it may promote practical applications of bioplastic-degrading bacteria. RESULTS In this study, the polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB)-degrading strain, Bacillus sp. JY14 was lyophilized with the use of various sugars as protective reagents. Among the carbon sources tested, raffinose was associated with the highest cell survival rate (12.1%). Moreover, 7% of raffionose showed the highest PHB degradation yield (92.1%). Therefore, raffinose was selected as the most effective protective reagent. Also, bacterial activity was successfully maintained, with raffinose, under different storage temperatures and period. CONCLUSIONS This study highlights lyophilization as an efficient microorganism storage method to enhance the applicability of bioplastic-degrading bacterial strains. The approach developed herein can be further studied and used to promote the application of microorganisms in bioplastic degradation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Fabry nephropathy is characterized by a deficiency of lysosomal alpha-galactosidase A, which results in proteinuria and kidney disease. The ineffectiveness of enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) for severe kidney failure highlights the need for early detection and meaningful markers. However, because the diagnosis and treatment of Fabry disease can vary according to the expertise of physicians, we evaluated the opinions of Korean specialists. METHODS A questionnaire regarding the management of Fabry nephropathy was emailed to healthcare providers with the experience or ability to treat individuals with Fabry nephropathy. RESULTS Of the 70 experts who responded to the survey, 43 were nephrologists, and 64.3% of the respondents reported having treated patients with Fabry disease. Pediatricians are treating primarily patients with classic types of the disease, while nephrologists and cardiologists are treating more patients with variant types. Only 40.7% of non-nephrologists agreed that a kidney biopsy was required at the time of diagnosis, compared with 81.4% of nephrologists. Thirty-eight of 70 respondents (54.3%) reported measuring globotriaosylsphingosine (lyso-Gb3) as a biomarker. The most common period to measure lyso-Gb3 was at the time of diagnosis, followed by after ERT, before ERT, and at screening. For the stage at which ERT should begin, microalbuminuria and proteinuria were chosen by 51.8% and 28.6% of respondents, respectively. CONCLUSION Nephrologists are more likely to treat variant Fabry disease rather than classic cases, and they agree that ERT should be initiated early in Fabry nephropathy, using lyso-Gb3 as a biomarker.

Abstract
We report the direct observation of muon neutrino interactions with the SND@LHC detector at the Large Hadron Collider. A dataset of proton-proton collisions at sqrt[s]=13.6 TeV collected by SND@LHC in 2022 is used, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.8 fb^{-1}. The search is based on information from the active electronic components of the SND@LHC detector, which covers the pseudorapidity region of 7.2<η<8.4, inaccessible to the other experiments at the collider. Muon neutrino candidates are identified through their charged-current interaction topology, with a track propagating through the entire length of the muon detector. After selection cuts, 8 ν_{μ} interaction candidate events remain with an estimated background of 0.086 events, yielding a significance of about 7 standard deviations for the observed ν_{μ} signal.

Abstract
Background Gait speed is an important measure of functional ability. This study aimed to investigate the factors associated with gait speed in patients with chronic kidney disease. The study focused on sarcopenic components, plasma uremic or inflammatory marker levels, and quality of life effects. Methods The RolE of AST120 (Renamezin) in sarCOpenia preVEntion in pRe-dialYsis chronic kidney disease patients is a 48-week, randomized controlled, parallel-group, open-label, multicenter trial to determine the role of Renamezin (Daewon Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd.) in patients with chronic kidney disease. The participants were classified into four groups according to gait speed: ≤0.8, 0.8-1.0, ≤1.0-1.3, and ≥1.3 m/sec. Linear regression analysis was performed to identify the factors associated with gait speed. Results The group with a gait speed of ≤0.8 m/sec was the oldest and had the highest proportion of participants with low education level and medical aid. Participants with a gait speed of ≤0.8 m/sec showed the lowest physical and mental component scale scores. The interleukin-6 (IL-6) level tended to be the higher trend in the lowest gait speed group. In the multivariate linear regression analysis adjusted for age, sex, diabetes mellitus, and estimated glomerular filtration rate, insurance status, handgrip strength, IL-6 level, hemoglobin level, mental component scale score, and physical component scale score were significantly associated with gait speed. Conclusion In conclusion, gait speed is associated with handgrip strength, IL-6 level, and various components of quality of life in predialysis chronic kidney disease patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Microcirculatory dysfunction plays a critical role in sepsis-associated acute kidney injury (S-AKI) development; however, its impact on renal recovery remains uncertain. We investigated the association between cortical microcirculatory function assessed using contrast-enhanced ultrasonography (CEUS) and renal recovery after S-AKI needing renal replacement therapy (RRT). METHODS This retrospective study included 23 patients who underwent CEUS among those who underwent acute RRT for S-AKI. In addition, we acquired data from 17 healthy individuals and 18 patients with chronic kidney disease. Renal recovery was defined as sustained independence from RRT for at least 14 days. RESULTS Of the CEUS-derived parameters, rise time, time to peak, and fall time were longer in patients with S-AKI than in healthy individuals (p = 0.045, 0.01, and 0.096, respectively). Fourteen patients (60.9%) with S-AKI receiving RRT experienced renal recovery; and these patients had higher values of peak enhancement, wash-in area under the curve (AUC), wash-in perfusion index, and washout AUC than those without recovery (p = 0.03, 0.01, 0.03, and 0.046, respectively). We evaluated the receiver operating characteristic curve and found that the peak enhancement, wash-in AUC, wash-in perfusion index, and wash-out AUC of CEUS derivatives estimated the probability of renal recovery after S-AKI requiring RRT (p = 0.03, 0.01, 0.03, and 0.04, respectively). CONCLUSION CEUS-assessed cortical microvascular perfusion may predict renal recovery following S-AKI that requires RRT. Further studies are essential to validate the clinical utility of microcirculatory parameters obtained from CEUS to estimate renal outcomes in various etiologies and severities of kidney disease.

Abstract
Background Sleep disturbance is a common issue among rotating night shift workers and is closely related to health risks. The present study aimed to determine the effectiveness of pharmacological and non-pharmacological sleep interventions for the management of sleep disturbance among rotating night shift workers. Methods For this systematic review and meta-analysis, we searched six electronic databases-EMBASE, CINAHL, Cochrane Library, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science-for randomized controlled trials and clinical trials published from January 1990 to June 2022. The quality of eligible studies was independently assessed by three authors using the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Checklist for randomized controlled trials and quasi-experimental studies. The meta-analysis was performed based on the random effects model using the Comprehensive Meta-Analysis software. The study was conducted following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. Results Of the 1019 studies retrieved, 30 met the inclusion criteria for the systematic review; 25 were selected for the meta-analysis. Sleep interventions were categorized as follows: pharmacological approach (n = 7), light therapy (n = 9), cognitive behavioral approach (n = 7), aroma or alternative therapy (n = 4), and shift schedule modification (n = 3). The overall mean effect size of the interventions was moderate (Hedges' g = 0.59; 95% confidence interval = 0.33-0.84, z = 4.50, p < 0.001). Conclusion Sleep interventions were effective in promoting sleep or reducing sleep disturbance among rotating night shift workers. These findings provide evidence of the effectiveness of various pharmacological and non-pharmacological sleep interventions for managing sleep health in the work environment of rotating night shift workers.

Abstract
The use of bioplastics, which can alleviate environmental pollution caused by non-degradable bioplastics, has received attention. As there are many types of bioplastics, method that can treat them simultaneously is important. Therefore, Bacillus sp. JY35 which can degrade different types of bioplastics, was screened in previous study. Most types of bioplastics, such as polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB), (P(3HB-co-4HB)), poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT), polybutylene succinate (PBS), and polycaprolactone (PCL), can be degraded by esterase family enzymes. To identify the genes that are involved in bioplastic degradation, analysis with whole-genome sequencing was performed. Among the many esterase enzymes, three carboxylesterase and one triacylglycerol lipase were identified and selected based on previous studies. Esterase activity using p-nitrophenyl substrates was measured, and the supernatant of JY35_02679 showed strong emulsion clarification activity compared with others. In addition, when recombinant E. coli was applied to the clear zone test, only the JY35_02679 gene showed activity in the clear zone test with bioplastic containing solid cultures. Further quantitative analysis showed 100 % PCL degradation at 7 days and 45.7 % PBS degradation at 10 days. We identified a gene encoding a bioplastic-degrading enzyme in Bacillus sp. JY35 and successfully expressed the gene in heterologous E. coli, which secreted esterases with broad specificity.

Abstract
The β-delayed proton decay of ^{13}O has previously been studied, but the direct observation of β-delayed 3αp decay has not been reported. Rare 3αp events from the decay of excited states in ^{13}N^{⋆} provide a sensitive probe of cluster configurations in ^{13}N. To measure the low-energy products following β-delayed 3αp decay, the Texas Active Target (TexAT) time projection chamber was employed using the one-at-a-time β-delayed charged-particle spectroscopy technique at the Cyclotron Institute, Texas A&M University. A total of 1.9×10^{5} ^{13}O implantations were made inside the TexAT time projection chamber. A total of 149 3αp events were observed, yielding a β-delayed 3αp branching ratio of 0.078(6)%. Four previously unknown α-decaying excited states were observed in ^{13}N at 11.3, 12.4, 13.1, and 13.7 MeV decaying via the 3α+p channel.

Abstract
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES This study was designed to examine the contents and methods of patient educational interventions about total knee arthroplasty (TKA) and their effectiveness in reducing postoperative pain and enhancing range of motion (ROM) in the literature. BACKGROUND Patient education has been provided to facilitate recovery after TKA; however, little is known about the contents and methods of the interventions and their effectiveness in reducing postoperative pain and enhancing ROM. DESIGN This is a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials (RCTs). METHODS Published studies from June 1998-June 2021 were identified from electronic databases. Two independent investigators assessed the quality of the studies by using the revised Cochrane risk-of-bias tool. Meta-analyses with random-effects models were conducted to assess the effectiveness of the interventions using the Comprehensive Meta-Analysis Software. The study was performed following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guideline. RESULTS Among 12 articles that met the inclusion criteria, three interventions provided education on pain management and mobility/exercises. The most common educational methods were the combinations of oral explanation, written materials, and audiovisual materials, group discussion, while four studies used information technology (IT) devices. The meta-analysis demonstrated that the educational interventions using IT devices were effective in improving pain and ROM, but not the interventions that did not use IT devices. CONCLUSION Structured education for pain management, communication and/or exercise support programs utilising diverse methods have been provided to patients undergoing TKA. Using IT devices could successfully enhance the effectiveness of educational interventions for patients undergoing TKA. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE Integration of postoperative pain management and mobility/exercises with the use of IT devices should be actively considered in providing patient education in clinical nursing practice.

Abstract
Fabry disease (FD), a rare X-linked lysosomal storage disorder that depletes alpha-galactosidase A (α-GalA), is caused by mutations in the GLA gene. Diminished α-GalA enzyme activity results in the accumulation of Gb3 and lyso-Gb3. The pathophysiology of hypertension in FD is complex and unclear. The storage of Gb3 in arterial endothelial cells and smooth muscle cells is known to produce vascular injury by increasing oxidative stress and inflammatory cytokines as a primary pathophysiological mechanism. In addition, Fabry nephropathy developed, resulting in a decrease in kidney function and contributing to hypertension. The prevalence of hypertension in patients with FD was between 28.4% and 56%, whereas hypertension in patients with chronic kidney disease ranged between 33% and 79%. A study using 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) to measure blood pressure (BP) indicated a high prevalence of uncontrolled hypertension in FD. Thus, 24-hour ABPM ought to be considered for FD hypertension assessments. Appropriate treatment of hypertension is believed to reduce mortality in patients with FD caused by kidney disease, cardiovascular disease, and cerebrovascular disease because hypertension significantly impacts organ damage. Up to 70% of FD patients have been reported to have kidney involvement, and angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors and angiotensin receptor blockers prescribed for proteinuria are recommended as first-line therapy with antihypertensive drugs. In conclusion, hypertension should be controlled appropriately, given the different morbidity and mortality caused by significant organ involvement in FD patients.

Abstract
Accurate radiation therapy (RT) targeting is crucial for glioblastoma treatment but may be challenging using clinical imaging alone due to the infiltrative nature of glioblastomas. Precise targeting by whole-brain spectroscopic MRI, which maps tumor metabolites including choline (Cho) and N-acetylaspartate (NAA), can quantify early treatment-induced molecular changes that other traditional modalities cannot measure. We developed a pipeline to determine how spectroscopic MRI changes during early RT are associated with patient outcomes to provide insight into the utility of adaptive RT planning. Data were obtained from a study (NCT03137888) where glioblastoma patients received high-dose RT guided by the pre-RT Cho/NAA twice normal (Cho/NAA ≥ 2x) volume, and received spectroscopic MRI scans pre- and mid-RT. Overlap statistics between pre- and mid-RT scans were used to quantify metabolic activity changes after two weeks of RT. Log-rank tests were used to quantify the relationship between imaging metrics and patient overall and progression-free survival (OS/PFS). Patients with lower Jaccard/Dice coefficients had longer PFS (p = 0.045 for both), and patients with lower Jaccard/Dice coefficients had higher OS trending towards significance (p = 0.060 for both). Cho/NAA ≥ 2x volumes changed significantly during early RT, putting healthy tissue at risk of irradiation, and warranting further study into using adaptive RT planning.

Abstract
PURPOSE Despite its well-known clinical importance, physician empathy (PE) has been variably defined and its concepts among cultures are yet to be studied. This study aimed to develop a conceptual framework of PE and explore influencing factors on physicians' empathetic behavior in the Korean clinical context. METHODS Forty-two faculty members and 67 residents participated in the two-round Delphi survey to arrive at a consensus regarding the conceptual framework of PE in 2019. To explore individual and external factors affecting physicians' empathetic behavior, a Likert scale questionnaire based on an initial free-text response was administered to the same participants. RESULTS The conceptual framework of PE among Korean doctors consisted of basic communication skills and attitudes, cognitively understanding of patients' thoughts and emotions, and communicating the doctors' understandings to patients. Individual attributes and system- and patient-factors were revealed as influencing factors for PE in real practice. The former included communication ability, self-awareness and management, humanism, clinical competence, and good personality traits. Excessive workload, time constraints, aggressive attitudes, and negative preconceptions towards doctors were perceived as inhibiting or hindering empathy in patient care. CONCLUSION PE in the Korean clinical context comprised behavioral and cognitive components. Individual attributes, as well as external factors including system- and patient-factors were identified to affect PE in clinical settings. Further studies are needed to enhance the conceptual clarity of PE and identify how to promote doctors' empathetic practice even in less favorable healthcare environments.

Abstract
Identification of novel, electricity-producing bacteria has garnered remarkable interest because of the various applications of electricigens in microbial fuel cell and bioelectrochemical systems. Shewanella marisflavi BBL25, an electricity-generating microorganism, uses various carbon sources and shows broader sugar utilization than the better-known S. oneidensis MR-1. To determine the sugar-utilizing genes and electricity production and transfer system in S. marisflavi BBL25, we performed an in-depth analysis using whole-genome sequencing. We identified various genes associated with carbon source utilization and the electron transfer system, similar to those of S. oneidensis MR-1. In addition, we identified genes related to hydrogen production systems in S. marisflavi BBL25, which were different from those in S. oneidensis MR-1. When we cultured S. marisflavi BBL25 under anaerobic conditions, the strain produced 427.58 ± 5.85 μl of biohydrogen from pyruvate and 877.43 ± 28.53 μl from xylose. As S. oneidensis MR-1 could not utilize glucose well, we introduced the glk gene from S. marisflavi BBL25 into S. oneidensis MR-1, resulting in a 117.35% increase in growth and a 17.64% increase in glucose consumption. The results of S. marisflavi BBL25 genome sequencing aided in the understanding of sugar utilization, electron transfer systems, and hydrogen production systems in other Shewanella species.

Abstract
In this study, fourteen types of biochar produced using seven biomasses at temperatures 300 °C and 600 °C were screened for phenolics (furfural and hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF)) removal. Eucheuma spinosum biochar (EB-BC 600) showed higher adsorption capacity to furfural (258.94 ± 3.2 mg/g) and HMF (222.81 ± 2.3 mg/g). Adsorption kinetics and isotherm experiments interpreted that EB-BC 600 biochar followed the pseudo-first-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm model for both furfural and HMF adsorption. Different hydrolysates were detoxified using EB-BC 600 biochar and used as feedstock for engineered Escherichia coli. An increased polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) production with detoxified barley biomass hydrolysate (DBBH: 1.71 ± 0.07 g PHA/L), detoxified miscanthus biomass hydrolysate (DMBH: 0.87 ± 0.03 g PHA/L) and detoxified pine biomass hydrolysate (DPBH: 1.28 ± 0.03 g PHA/L) was recorded, which was 2.8, 6.4 and 3.4 folds high as compared to undetoxified hydrolysates. This study reports the mechanism involved in furfural and HMF removal using biochar and valorization of hydrolysate into PHA.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Malnutrition is associated with adverse outcomes in patients on chronic haemodialysis. Thus, identifying accurate methods for diagnosing malnutrition is essential. The present retrospective study investigated the utility of the new Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) criteria in patients undergoing chronic haemodialysis. METHODS Phase angle and fat-free mass index (FFMI) were derived using bioelectrical impedance analysis. Malnutrition was determined when the subjects had at least one phenotypic criterion (weight loss, low body mass index [BMI] or FFMI). RESULTS This study included 103 patients undergoing chronic haemodialysis and 46 (44.7%) patients were diagnosed as malnourished. Malnutrition determined using the GLIM criteria was associated with increased risks of all-cause death (hazard ratio = 3.0, p = 0.044) and infection requiring hospitalisation (hazard ratio = 2.4, p = 0.015), independent of age, sex and comorbidities. However, malnutrition was not related to major adverse cardiovascular events (p = 0.908). We further evaluated the longitudinal changes in phenotypic parameters. Subjects with median levels of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein exceeding 5 mg L-1 exhibited decreased body weight and BMI (p = 0.015 and 0.016, respectively). In addition, body weight, BMI and FFMI were reduced in subjects with a median protein catabolic rate of < 1.0 mg kg-1 day-1 , even after adjustment for age, sex and comorbidities (p = 0.026, 0.053 and 0.039, respectively). CONCLUSIONS Malnutrition assessed using the GLIM criteria could be a useful predictor of mortality and infection in patients on chronic haemodialysis. To improve nutritional status, approaches for decreasing inflammation and increasing protein intake are needed.

Objectives
Conflicting results regarding sex-based differences in the outcomes of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) patients have been reported. Furthermore, no study has examined whether differences in in-hospital interventions and courses are driven by sex differences. This study evaluated the effect of sex on the in-hospital course of these patients as well as the survival rates and long-term neurological outcomes of comatose OHCA patients treated with targeted temperature management (TTM).
Methods
We retrospectively analyzed the Korean Hypothermia Network prospective registry composed of data collected from 22 hospitals in Korea between October 2015 and December 2018. To evaluate the effect of sex on patient outcomes, we created various multivariate logistic regression models including baseline characteristics, resuscitation, and in-hospital care variables with an interaction term (age × sex). We also performed a stratified analysis of different age groups (less than 50 years of age and older). Regarding the difference in in-hospital courses, we compared daily total and SOFA sub-scores between the sexes and analyzed whether the decision regarding early cardiac interventions and limitations in in-hospital care were associated with sex.
Results
Among 1339 patients included in the study, 952 were men and 387 were women. There were no differences in age or modified comorbidity index values between the gender groups. Women were more likely to experience cardiac arrest at home and unwitnessed arrests, whereas men were more likely to have shockable initial rhythm, cardiac cause arrest, and ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) on initial electrocardiography and undergo early coronary interventions. The rate of survival to discharge was similar, but men showed better 6-month neurological outcomes. After adjusting for confounders, the male sex was not associated with survival to discharge or good 6-month neurological outcomes. There was no association between sex and outcome in patients of reproductive age and no interaction between age and sex. Regarding the in-hospital course, the daily total and SOFA sub-scores were similar in both sexes. The adjusted effect of sex was not associated with the clinician’s decision to perform early cardiac interventions. The decision to discontinue life-sustaining treatment was determined by poor prognostic factors, not by sex.
Conclusions
The findings suggested that men had more favorable 6-month survivals and good neurological outcomes compared to women since they had more favorable resuscitation variables. However, after adjusting for confounders, there was no difference between the sexes. This result was consistent with the data in patients of reproductive age. The results regarding in-hospital course showed that daily patient severity scores, early cardiac interventions, resource consumption, and the rates of withdrawal/withholding of in-hospital care were similar in men and women.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Acute low back pain (LBP) is a common condition that can be chronic if not properly treated. Aceclofenac and eperisone hydrochloride are commonly prescribed drugs for acute LBP and muscle spasms. Therefore, NVP-1203, a fixed-dose combination of 100 mg aceclofenac and 75 mg eperisone hydrochloride, is being developed. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of NVP-1203 compared to those of a single administration of 100 mg aceclofenac in patients with acute LBP and muscle spasms. PATIENTS AND METHODS Overall, 455 patients with acute LBP and muscle spasms were enrolled. The patients were assigned to NVP-1203 or Airtal group (aceclofenac 100 mg). The primary efficacy endpoint was the mean change in the 100 mm pain movement and resting visual analog scale (VAS) scores on treatment day 7. RESULTS The mean change in the 100 mm pain movement/resting VAS scores from baseline to day 7 was -49.7 ± 21.5/-41.0 ± 19.4 mm and -38.8 ± 18.9/-33.8 ± 18.0 mm for the NVP-1203 and Airtal groups, respectively. The differences between the two groups were statistically significant (movement, p < 0.0001; resting, p = 0.0002). Differences in least-square (LS) mean change of the 100 mm pain movement/resting VAS score between the two groups using the analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) model was -10.2/-7.4 mm, and the upper limit of the 95% confidence interval was -6.44/-4.16 mm. CONCLUSIONS NVP-1203 is more effective in reducing pain than the 100 mg aceclofenac alone. However, the two drugs have similar safety profiles in patients with acute LBP and muscle spasms.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Successful cryopreservation of bovine oocytes is very important for research and commercial applications. However, the survival and development rate of vitrified-thawed (VT) oocytes are lower than those of non-vitrified-thawed (non-VT) oocytes. OBJECTIVE To investigate the effect of adding hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) to the vitrification solution for bovine oocytes. MATERIALS AND METHODS For vitrification, bovine metaphase II oocytes were pretreated with a solution containing 10% ethylene glycol supplemented with 0, 10, 50, or 100 ug/mL HPC for 5 min, exposed to a solution containing 30% ethylene glycol supplemented with 0, 10, 50, or 100 ug/mL HPC for 30 s, and then directly plunged into liquid nitrogen. RESULTS The survival rate of oocytes was significantly higher in the 50 HPC group than in the 0, 10, and 100 HPC groups. The reactive oxygen species level was lower in the non-VT and 50 HPC groups than in the other groups. The mRNA levels of proapoptotic genes (Bax) were lower in the non-VT, 0, and 50 HPC groups than in the other groups. The mRNA levels of antiapoptotic genes (BCl2) were higher in the non-VT than in the other groups. The development rates of embryos (day 8) obtained via parthenogenetic activation (PA) were determined in the non-VT, 0 HPC, and 50 HPC groups. The cleavage rate was significantly higher in the non-VT group. CONCLUSION Supplementation of vitrification solution with HPC improves the survival of VT bovine oocytes and the development capacity of embryos derived from these oocytes via PA. doi.org/10.54680/fr23110110212.

Abstract
There were few data regarding the association of volume status with sarcopenia using muscle mass, strength, and physical performance in non-dialysis chronic kidney disease (ND-CKD) patients. We aimed to evaluate the association between volume status and sarcopenia in ND-CKD patients. Our retrospective study analyzed data from a previous study which included ND-CKD patients who had stable renal function. Our study used its baseline data alone. The edema index and muscle mass were measured using a multi-frequency bioimpedance analysis machine. The edema index was calculated using extracellular water/total body water ratio. The skeletal muscle index (SMI, kg/m2) was calculated using appendicular muscle mass per height squared. Handgrip strength (HGS, kg) was measured during the standing position in all patients. Dynamic gait speed (GS, m/s) was evaluated using 6-m walking speed. Patients with both low muscle mass (SMI < 7.0 kg/m2 for men and < 5.7 kg/m2 for women using bioimpedance analysis) and low HGS (< 28 kg for men and < 18 kg for women) or low GS (< 1.0 m/s) were classified as having sarcopenia. The patients (n = 147) were divided into tertiles based on the edema index level. The mean edema index in the low, middle, and high tertiles was 0.377 ± 0.006, 0.390 ± 0.003, and 0.402 ± 0.006, respectively. The edema index was significantly correlated with SMI, HGS, and GS (r = - 0.343 for SMI, - 0.492 for HGS, and - 0.331 for GS; P < 0.001 for three indicators). The SMI, HGS, and GS values were 8.1 ± 1.0 kg/m2, 33.0 ± 9.4 kg, and 1.2 ± 0.2 m/s in the low tertile,7.8 ± 1.2 kg/m2, 30.0 ± 7.5 kg, and 1.0 ± 0.3 m/s in the middle tertile, and 7.2 ± 1.4 kg/m2, 23.7 ± 7.4 kg, and 1.0 ± 0.3 m/s in the high tertile, respectively. Univariate analyses revealed that SMI was lower in patients in the high tertile than in those in the low tertile. HGS was lowest in high tertile, and GS was greatest in the low tertile. The high tertile for predicting sarcopenia had an odds ratio of 6.03 (95% CI, 1.78-20.37; P = 0.004) compared to low or middle tertiles. The results of multivariate analyses were similar to those of the univariate analyses. The subgroup analyses showed that statistical significance was greater in < 65 years and men than ≥ 65 years and women. The present study showed that the edema index is inversely associated with sarcopenia, muscle mass index, strength, and physical performance in ND-CKD patients. However, considering the limitations of our study such as its small sample size, this association was not strong. Further studies that include volume-independent measurements, data on physical activity and diet, and a larger number of patients are warranted to overcome these limitations.

Abstract
Polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) is a biodegradable bioplastic with potential applications as an alternative to petroleum-based plastics. However, efficient PHB production remains difficult. The main cost of PHB production is attributed to carbon sources; hence, finding inexpensive sources is important. Galactose is a possible substrate for polyhydroxyalkanoate production as it is abundant in marine environments. Marine bacteria that produce PHB from galactose could be an effective resource that can be used for efficient PHB production. In this study, to identify a galactose utilizing PHB producer, we examined 16 Halomonas strains. We demonstrated that Halomonas cerina (Halomonas sp. YK44) has the highest growth and PHB production using a culture media containing 2% galactose, final 4% NaCl, and 0.1% yeast extract. These culture conditions yielded 8.98 g/L PHB (78.1% PHB content (w/w)). When galactose-containing red algae (Eucheuma spinosum) hydrolysates were used as a carbon source, 5.2 g/L PHB was produced with 1.425% galactose after treatment with activated carbon. Since high salt conditions can be used to avoid sterilization, we examined whether Halomonas sp. YK44 could produce PHB in non-sterilized conditions. Culture media in these conditions yielded 72.41% PHB content. Thus, Halomonas sp. YK44 is robust against contamination, allowing for long-term culture and economical PHB production.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In-depth investigation of the factors that exacerbate sleep disturbance among night-shift workers is essential to develop a successful implementation strategy to improve sleep. Although some characteristics of work associated with sleep disturbances have been investigated, there are inconsistencies in the findings. This study aimed to assess the influence of working time and work characteristics on sleep disturbance among night-shift workers. METHODS This study was a secondary data analysis of a nationally representative sample of data from the fifth Korean Working Condition Survey in 2017. A total of 1,790 wage workers aged between 19 and 64 years with night shift schedules were selected and analyzed. A multiple logistic regression analysis was conducted to analyze the influences of working time characteristics, including shift type, frequency of night shift, and extended work; as well as work characteristics, including physical work demands, workload, emotional work demands, social support, and communication, on sleep disturbance among night-shift workers. RESULTS Of those analyzed, 8.4% of night-shift workers experienced sleep disturbances. Night-shift workers with extended work, higher workloads, and emotional work demands were more likely to experience sleep disturbances (OR = 1.53, 95% CI = 1.05 to 2.23; OR = 1.01, 95% CI = 1.01 to 1.03; OR = 1.03, 95% CI = 1.02 to 1.05; respectively). CONCLUSION Extended work, higher workload, and emotional work demands were significant factors for sleep disturbance among night-shift workers. These findings highlight the importance of adjusting work demands and mitigating extended work to reduce sleep disturbance in night-shift workers.

Abstract
Background
There has been a worrying rise in the number of people with dementia, especially with many of them also suffering from acute myocardial infarction (AMI), a disease with a high mortality rate.
Purpose
We evaluated the impact of dementia on the mortality of patients with AMI and how drug compliance affects this relationship.
Methods
The data were derived from National Health Insurance Service-Senior. The total number of patients diagnosed with AMI for the first time between 2007 and 2013 was 16,835, among whom 2,021 had dementia. Medication possession ratio (MPR) was used to assess medication adherence.
Results
AMI patients with dementia had unfavorable baseline characteristics; they had significantly higher risk of all-cause mortality (Hazard ratio [HR]: 2.49; 95% confidence interval (CI): 2.34–2.66; P<0.001) and lower MPR (aspirin: 21.9% vs. 42.8%; P<0.001). AMI patients were stratified by presence of dementia and medication adherence, and the survival rate was the highest among those with no dementia and good adherence. followed by those with no dementia and poor adherence, those with dementia and good adherence, and those with dementia and poor adherence. The multivariable analysis revealed that dementia (HR: 1.64; 95% CI: 1.53–1.75; P<0.001) and poor adherence to medication (HR: 1.60; 95% CI: 1.49–1.71; P<0.001) had a significant association with all-cause mortality in AMI patients.
Conclusions
AMI patients with dementia have a higher mortality rate. Patients with dementia have poorer medication adherence than those without, negatively affecting their prognosis.

Abstract
Polybutylene succinate (PBS) is a bioplastic substitute for synthetic plastics that are made from petroleum-based products such as polyethylene and polypropylene. However, the biodegradation rate of PBS is still low and similar to that of polylactic acid (PLA). Moreover, our knowledge about degrader species is limited to a few fungi and mixed consortia. Here, to identify a bacterial degrader to accelerate PBS degradation, we screened and isolated Terribacillus sp. JY49, which showed significant degradability. In order to optimize solid and liquid culture conditions, the effect of factors such as temperature, additional carbon sources, and salt concentrations on degradation was confirmed. We observed a degradation yield of 22.3% after 7 days when adding 1% of glucose. Additionally, NaCl was added to liquid media, and degradation yield was decreased but PBS films were broken into pieces. Comparing the degree of PBS degradation during 10 days, the degradation yield was 31.4% after 10 days at 30 °C. Alteration of physical properties of films was analyzed by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), gel permeation chromatography (GPC), and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR). In addition, Terribacillus sp. JY49 showed clear zones on poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT), polycaprolactone (PCL), and copolymers such as P(3HB-co-3HV) and P(3HV-co-4HB), exhibiting a broad spectrum of degradation activities on bioplastics. However, there was no significant difference in absorbance when esterase activity was examined for different types of bioplastics. Overall, Terribacillus sp. JY49 is a potential bacterial strain that can degrade PBS and other bioplastics, and this is the first report of Terribacillus sp. as a bioplastic degrader.

Abstract
Polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) is a bio-based, biodegradable and biocompatible plastic that has the potential to replace petroleum-based plastics. Lignocellulosic biomass is a promising feedstock for industrial fermentation to produce bioproducts such as polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB). However, the pretreatment processes of lignocellulosic biomass lead to the generation of toxic byproducts, such as furfural, 5-HMF, vanillin, and acetate, which affect microbial growth and productivity. In this study, to reduce furfural toxicity during PHB production from lignocellulosic hydrolysates, we genetically engineered Cupriavidus necator NCIMB 11599, by inserting the nicotine amide salvage pathway genes pncB and nadE to increase the NAD(P)H pool. We found that the expression of pncB was the most effective in improving tolerance to inhibitors, cell growth, PHB production and sugar consumption rate. In addition, the engineered strain harboring pncB showed higher PHB production using lignocellulosic hydrolysates than the wild-type strain. Therefore, the application of NAD salvage pathway genes improves the tolerance of Cupriavidus necator to lignocellulosic-derived inhibitors and should be used to optimize PHB production.

Abstract
The present study deals with the utilization of lignocellulosic hydrolysate-based carbon source for exopolysaccharide (EPS) production using newly reported marine Echinicola sediminis BBL-M-12. This bacterium produced 7.56 g L-1 and 5.32 g L-1 of EPS on supplementing 30 g L-1 glucose and 10 g L-1 xylose as the sole carbon source, respectively. Whereas on feeding Miscanthus hydrolysate (MCH) with glucose content adjusting to 20 g L-1, E. sediminis BBL-M-12 produced 6.18 g L-1 of EPS. The inhibitors study showed bacterium could tolerate higher concentrations of fermentation inhibitors include furfural (0.05%), 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (0.1%), vanillin (0.1%) and acetate (0.5%). Moreover, the EPS composition was greatly altered with the type and concentration of carbon source supplied, although β-D-Glucopyranose, β-D-Galactopyranose, and β-D-Xylopyranose were the dominant monomers detected. Interestingly, E. sediminis BBL-M-12 EPS revealed excellent environmental applications like clay flocculation, oil emulsification, and removal of humic acid, textile dye, and heavy metal from the aqueous phase.

Abstract
The Korean Society of Nephrology (KSN) has published a clinical practice guideline (CPG) document for maintenance hemodialysis (HD). The document, 2021 Clinical Practice Guideline on Optimal HD Treatment, is based on an extensive evidence-oriented review of the benefits of preparation, initiation, and maintenance therapy for HD, with the participation of representative experts from the KSN under the methodologists' support for guideline development. It was intended to help clinicians participating in HD treatment make safer and more effective clinical decisions by providing user-friendly guidelines. We hope that this CPG will be meaningful as a recommendation in practice, but not on a regulatory rule basis, as different approaches and treatments may be used by health care providers depending on the individual patient's condition. This CPG consists of eight sections and 15 key questions. Each begins with statements that are graded by the strength of recommendations and quality of the evidence. Each statement is followed by a summary of the evidence supporting the recommendations. There are also a link to full-text documents and lists of the most important reports so that the readers can read further (most of this is available online).

Abstract
Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) causes severe infections and poses a global healthcare challenge. The utilization of novel molecules which confer synergistical effects to existing MRSA-directed antibiotics is one of the well-accepted strategies in lieu of de novo development of new antibiotics. Thymol is a key component of the essential oil of plants in the Thymus and Origanum genera. Despite the absence of antimicrobial potency, thymol is known to inhibit MRSA biofilm formation. However, the anti-MRSA activity of thymol analogs is not well characterized. Here, we assessed the antimicrobial activity of several thymol derivatives and found that 4-chloro-2-isopropyl-5-methylphenol (chlorothymol) has antimicrobial activity against MRSA and in addition it also prevents biofilm formation. Chlorothymol inhibited staphyloxanthin production, slowed MRSA motility, and altered bacterial cell density and size. This compound also showed a synergistic antimicrobial activity with oxacillin against highly resistant S. aureus clinical isolates and biofilms associated with these isolates. Our results demonstrate that chlorinated thymol derivatives should be considered as a new lead compound in anti-MRSA therapeutics.
