Fe3+-induced coordination cross-linking gallic acid-carboxymethyl cellulose self-healing hydrogel

Self-healing hydrogel is a promising soft material for applications in wound dressings, drug delivery, tissue engineering, biomimetic electronic skin, and wearable electronic devices. However, it is a challenge to fabricate the self-healing hydrogels without external stimuli. Inspired by mussel, the metal-catechol complexes were introduced into the hydrogel systems to prepare the mussel-inspired hydrogels by regulating the gelation kinetics of Fe3+ crosslinkers with gallic acid (GA) in this research. The amine-functionalized carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) was grafted with GA and then chelated with Fe3+ to form a multi-response system. The crosslinking of carboxymethyl cellulose-ethylenediamine-gallic acid (CEG) hydrogel was controlled by adjusting the pH to affect the iron coordination chemistry, which could enhance the self-healing properties and mechanical strength of hydrogels. In addition, the CEG hydrogel exhibited great antibacterial and antioxidant properties. And the CEG hydrogel could strongly adhere to the skin tissue. The adhesion strength of CEG hydrogel on pigskin was 11.44 kPa, which is higher than that of commercial wound dressings (∼5 kPa). Moreover, the thixotropy of the CEG hydrogel was confirmed with rheological test. In summary, it has great potential in the application field of wound dressing.

Effects of heated-treating temperature on the stability and electrochemical performance of alginate-based multi-crosslinked biomembranes

In this study, the organosilane nanoparticles as additive and crosslinker were prepared and incorporated into sodium alginate to fabricate a series of alginate-based multi-crosslinked biomembranes at different thermal treatment temperature without the usage of another crosslinking agent. The effects of treatment temperature on the stability of biomembranes including dimensional, oxidative, hydrolytic and mechanical stability were investigated in detail. As a whole, the stability of biomembranes exhibited increasing tendency with the increment of treatment temperature due to the formation of more compact internal network structure. The electrochemical performance of biomembranes in respect to their potential as proton exchange membranes for direct methanol fuel cell application were also investigated based on the treatment temperature. The results revealed that the biomembranes possessed excellent methanol resistance and the methanol diffusion coefficient decreased with the increment of treatment temperature. The biomembrane with 120 °C heat-treatment showed the optimal selectivity (14.30 × 105 Ss cm-3), which was about 1.77 and 68.10 times of that and of M-80 (8.09 × 105 Ss cm-3) and Nafion@117 (0.21 × 105 Ss cm-3), respectively. Fuel cell performance measurements showed that M-120 possessed higher maximum power density and cell stability compared with M-80 and Nafion@117, indicating its best adaptability for use in direct methanol fuel cell.

Fabrication of carboxymethyl cellulose-based thermo-sensitive hydrogels and inhibition of corneal neovascularization

Corneal neovascularization (CNV) is a common multifactorial sequela of anterior corneal segment inflammation, which could lead to visual impairment and even blindness. The main treatments available are surgical sutures and invasive drug injections, which could cause serious ocular complications. To solve this problem, a thermo-sensitive drug-loaded hydrogel with high transparency was prepared in this study, which could achieve the sustained-release of drugs without affecting normal vision. In briefly, the thermo-sensitive hydrogel (PFNOCMC) was prepared from oxidized carboxymethyl cellulose (OCMC) and aminated poloxamer 407 (PF127-NH2). The results proved the PFNOCMC hydrogels possess high transparency, suitable gel temperature and time. In the CNV model, the PFNOCMC hydrogel loading bone morphogenetic protein 4 (BMP4) showed significant inhibition of CNV, this is due to the hydrogel allowed the drug to stay longer in the target area. The animal experiments on the ocular surface were carried out, which proved the hydrogel had excellent biocompatibility, and could realize the sustained-release of loaded drugs, and had a significant inhibitory effect on the neovascularization after ocular surface surgery. In conclusion, PFNOCMC hydrogels have great potential as sustained-release drug carriers in the biomedical field and provide a new minimally invasive option for the treatment of neovascular ocular diseases.

Bone morphogenetic protein 4 thermosensitive hydrogel inhibits corneal neovascularization by repairing corneal epithelial apical junctional complexes

Corneal neovascularization (CNV) is a heavy attribute of blinding disease changes. Existing medications need numerous infusions and have a limited absorption. Investigating novel drugs with safety, efficacy, and convenience is crucial. In this study, we developed a bone morphogenetic protein 4 (BMP4)-loaded poloxamer-oxidized sodium alginate (F127-OSA) thermosensitive hydrogel. The 14 % F127-OSA hydrogel transformed from sol to gel at 31-32 °C, which might extend the application period on the ocular surface. The hydrogel's porous structure and uniform dispersion made it possible for drugs to release gradually. We used a suture-induced rat CNV model to investigate the mechanism of CNV inhibition by hydrogel. We discovered that F127-OSA hydrogel loaded with BMP4 could significantly reduce the length and area of CNV, relieve corneal edema, and stop aberrant epithelial cell proliferation. The hydrogel's efficacy was superior to that of the common solvent group. Additionally, BMP4 thermosensitive hydrogel repaired ultrastructure, including microvilli, intercellular junctions, and damaged apical junctional complexes (AJCs), suggesting a potential mechanism by which the hydrogel prevented CNV formation. In conclusion, our investigation demonstrates that F127-OSA thermosensitive hydrogel loaded with BMP4 can repair corneal epithelial AJCs and is a promising novel medication for the treatment of CNV.

An effective method for fabricating crosslinked multilayer biomembranes with excellent stability and methanol resistance

To develop the proton exchange membranes with excellent comprehensive performance, especially high methanol resistance, the multilayer biomembranes were first prepared by alternately depositing chitosan and self-made functionalized organosilane on the surface of crosslinked chitosan via layer-by-layer self-assembly and were further treated via immersing in sulfuric acid and then heating at high temperature. SEM and FTIR spectra confirmed the presence of thin self-assemble layers with good adhesion on the substrate due to the interactions and the condensation reaction. The introduction of self-assemble layers and crosslinked structure significantly improved the stability and methanol resistance of biomembrane. The methanol diffusion coefficient of 15 bilayers modified biomembrane was only 2.6 × 10-8 cm2 S-1 in 12 M methanol, which was very favorable for its application in direct methanol fuel cell with high methanol concentration. Furthermore, the crosslinked multilayer biomembranes exhibited enhanced stability and the functionalized organosilane with high conductive groups ensured the biomembranes with better proton conductivity. The biomembrane with 15 bilayers showed extremely high selectivity value (1.05 × 106 Sscm-3), indicating its attractive potential as proton exchange membrane in direct methanol fuel cell.

10-hydroxycamptothecin-loaded starch-based microcapsules with the stepwise responsive release strategy for targeted controlled release

Controlled and accurate drug release at the target site have been the focus of research. Especially in cancer therapy, economical, convenient and accurate delivery strategies could help to reduce the toxic effects of drugs on normal tissues and improve drug availability. In the study, glutathione (GSH)-responsive microcapsules (FA-RSMCs) were prepared by sonochemical method based on thiolated modified starch. 10-Hydroxycamptothecin (HCPT) was designed as a reactive oxygen species (ROS)-responsive polyprodrug (polyHCPT), which was loaded into the core of the microcapsules to obtain stepwise released drug delivery carriers. In the tumor microenvironment, FA-RSMCs first triggered GSH-responsive cleavage to release polyHCPT, followed by ROS-responsive cleavage of polyHCPT to release intact HCPT drug molecules. The results of experiments in simulated tumor microenvironment showed that FA-RSMCs exhibited good cascade-response release properties in vitro. It exhibited good anti-tumor ability and protection of normal cells in cytotoxicity in vitro. This strategy enhanced the accuracy and safety of targeted delivery of HCPT via microcapsules, which has potential for clinical application.

Astaxanthin promotes locomotor function recovery and attenuates tissue damage in rats following spinal cord injury: a systematic review and trial sequential analysis

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a catastrophic condition with few therapeutic options. Astaxanthin (AST), a natural nutritional supplement with powerful antioxidant activities, is finding its new application in the field of SCI. Here, we performed a systematic review to assess the neurological roles of AST in rats following SCI, and assessed the potential for clinical translation. Searches were conducted on PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, the Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, WanFang data, Vip Journal Integration Platform, and SinoMed databases. Animal studies that evaluated the neurobiological roles of AST in a rat model of SCI were included. A total of 10 articles were included; most of them had moderate-to-high methodological quality, while the overall quality of evidence was not high. Generally, the meta-analyses revealed that rats treated with AST exhibited an increased Basso, Beattie, and Bresnahan (BBB) score compared with the controls, and the weighted mean differences (WMDs) between those two groups showed a gradual upward trend from days 7 (six studies, n = 88, WMD = 2.85, 95% CI = 1.83 to 3.87, p < 0.00001) to days 28 (five studies, n = 76, WMD = 6.42, 95% CI = 4.29 to 8.55, p < 0.00001) after treatment. AST treatment was associated with improved outcomes in spared white matter area, motor neuron survival, and SOD and MDA levels. Subgroup analyses indicated there were differences in the improvement of BBB scores between distinct injury types. The trial sequential analysis then firmly proved that AST could facilitate the locomotor recovery of rats following SCI. In addition, this review suggested that AST could modulate oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, neuron loss, and autophagy via multiple signaling pathways for treating SCI. Collectively, with a protective effect, good safety, and a systematic action mechanism, AST is a promising candidate for future clinical trials of SCI. Nonetheless, in light of the limitations of the included studies, larger and high-quality studies are needed for verification.

Chitosan-based mussel-inspired hydrogel for rapid self-healing and high adhesion of tissue adhesion and wound dressings

The hydrogel wound dressing with self-healing and adhesive property can provide better protection to the wound and prolong the service life of the material. Inspired by mussels, a high-adhesion, injectable, self-healing and antibacterial hydrogel was designed in this study. The lysine (Lys) and the catechol compound 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (DOPAC) were grafted onto chitosan (CS). The presence of catechol group endows the hydrogel strong adhesion and antioxidation. In the experiment of wound healing in vitro, the hydrogel can adhere to the wound surface and promote wound heal. In addition, it has been proved the hydrogel has good antibacterial properties against S. aureus and E. coli. The treatment of CLD hydrogel, the degree of wound inflammation was significantly alleviated. The levels of TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6 and TGF-β1 were reduced from 39.8379 %, 31.6768 %, 32.1015 % and 38.4911 % to 18.5931 %, 12.2275 %, 13.0524 % and 16.9959 %, respectively. And the levels of PDGFD and CD31 were increased from 35.6054 %, 21.7394 % to 51.8555 %, 43.9326 %, respectively. These results indicated that the CLD hydrogel has a good ability to promote angiogenesis, thickening of skin and epithelial structures.

Improving wheat seedling quality through deep ploughing and soil compaction at sowing in lime concretion black soil

The straw incorporation in lime concretion black soil compromises the emergence and quality of winter wheat seedlings in Huaibei Plain, China, lowering the potential of wheat productivity. To overcome the disadvantage, a two-year field experiment was conducted in 2017-18 and 2018-19 to investigate the effects of different tillage modes on seedling emergence and subsequent seedling growth, and final grain yield (GY) in winter wheat. The modes are rotary tillage with compaction after sowing (RCT), rotary tillage after deep ploughing (PT) and rotary tillage after deep ploughing with compaction after sowing (PCT), with the traditional rotary tillage (RT) method as the control. Compared to RT, greater soil moisture content (SMC) at the seedling stage was observed in deep ploughing or compaction treatment, and the highest SMC was achieved in PCT; the time of reaching the maximum number of seedlings was 1 d sooner in RCT or PT, and 3 d in PCT; the seedling number in RCT, PT and PCT was significantly increased by 32.6%, 34.5% and 61.5% respectively. The population size, shoot and root growth of winter wheat in ploughing mode was significantly enhanced than that of rotary treatment at the over-wintering stage; compared to no compaction after sowing, plant growth in compaction treatments was significantly promoted with greater plant population size and height of seedlings. At harvest, GY in RCT, PT and PCT was significantly improved by 5.87%, 10.8% and 16.4%, respectively, compared to RT and the highest GY was achieved in PCT by up to 8, 350.1 kg ha-1 due to the increased spike number. In conclusion, the seedling quality in the straw incorporation practice was improved through rotary after deep ploughing and compaction after sowing for lime concretion black soil in Huaibei Plain, China or a similar soil type.

Stimulus-responsive starch-based nanocapsules for targeted delivery and antimicrobial applications

Polysaccharide materials have attracted a widespread interest in the biomedical materials field due to their non-toxic, biocompatible and biodegradable properties. In this research, starch was modified with chloroacetic acid, folic acid (FA) and thioglycolic acid and then starch-based nanocapsules loaded with curcumin (FA-RSNCs@CUR) were prepared by the convenient oxidation method. The nanocapsules were prepared with stable particle size distribution of 100 nm. In the drug release test simulating the tumor microenvironment in vitro, the cumulative CUR release rate at 12 h was 85.18 %. Due to FA and FA receptor mediation, it only took 4 h for FA-RSNCs@CUR to achieve internalization by HeLa cells. In addition, cytotoxicity confirmed that starch-based nanocapsules have good biocompatibility as well as protection of normal cells in vitro. And FA-RSNCs@CUR showed certain antibacterial properties in vitro. Therefore, FA-RSNCs@CUR has good potential for future applications in food preservation and wound dressing, and so on.

Injectable chitosan-based self-healing supramolecular hydrogels with temperature and pH dual-responsivenesses

In this study, a supramolecular hydrogel was fabricated with orotic acid (OA) modified chitosan (OACS) and 2,6-diaminopurine (DAP). The obtained OACS-DAP supramolecular hydrogels have dual responsiveness to temperature and pH. Phase transition experiments indicate this is a temperature-dependent thermoreversible supramolecular hydrogel. Rheological experiments proved the formation of the supramolecular hydrogel and its thixotropic properties. FTIR spectra confirmed that hydrogen bonds and π-π interactions are the main driving forces for OACS and DAP to form hydrogels through intermolecular self-assembly. XRD pattern confirmed the amorphous morphology of OACS-DAP hydrogels. The hydrogel has excellent electrical conductivity with a conductivity of 9.48 μ S·cm^-1. And can achieve the precise release of gastrointestinal drugs. OACS-DAP hydrogel is expected to have better applications in the field of gastrointestinal drug release.

A meta-analysis of resveratrol protects against cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury: Evidence from rats studies and insight into molecular mechanisms

Objective: To evaluate the neuroprotective effect of resveratrol (RES) in rat models of cerebral ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury.

Data sources: PubMed, Embase, MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, and Chinese databases were searched from their inception dates to July 2022. No language restriction was used in the literature search.

Date Selection: Studies were selected that RES were used to treat cerebral I/R injury in vivo. Two reviewers conducted literature screening, data extraction and methodological quality assessment independently.

Outcome measures: Cerebral infarct volume was included as primary outcome. The secondary outcomes included cerebral water content and neurological deficit scores. Malondialdehyde (MDA) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) were used to evaluate oxidative stress during medication.

Results: A total of 41 studies were included, and only a few of them the methodological quality was relatively low. Compared with the control group, RES significantly reduced the cerebral infarct volume (29 studies, standard mean difference (SMD) = −2.88 [−3.23 to −2.53], p < 0.00001) and brain water content (nine studies, MD = −9.49 [−13.58 to −5.40], p < 0.00001) after cerebral I/R injury, then neurological function was improved (15 studies, SMD = −1.96 [−2.26 to −1.65], p < 0.00001). The MDA level (six studies, SMD = −8.97 [−13.60 to −4.34], p = 0.0001) was decreased notably after treatment of RES, while the SOD level (five studies, SMD = 3.13 [−0.16 to 6.43], p = 0.06) was increased unsatisfactory. Consistently, subgroup analysis of cerebral infarct volume suggested that the optimal therapeutic dose is 30 mg/kg (eight studies, SMD = −5.83 [−7.63 to −4.04], p < 0.00001). Meanwhile, 60 min of occlusion (three studies, SMD = −10.89 [−16.35 to −5.42], p < 0.0001) could get maximum benefit from compared with 90 min and 120 min of occlusion. On the other hand, the publication bias cannot be ignored. The pharmacological mechanisms of RES on cerebral I/R injury models as reported have be summarized, which can be used for reference by researchers to further plan their future experiments.

Conclusion: RES might have a good neuroprotective effect on cerebral I/R injury in rats, then 30 mg/kg RES may be the optimal dose for treatment, and early administration of RES should be more neuroprotective. Also it need to be further verified through exploration of dose effect relationship, or delay administration or not.

Schiff Base Aggregation-Induced Emission Luminogens for Sensing Applications: A Review

Fluorescence sensing can not only identify a target substrate qualitatively but also achieve the purpose of quantitative detection through the change of the fluorescence signal. It has the advantages of immense sensitivity, rapid response, and excellent selectivity. The proposed aggregation-induced emission (AIE) concept solves the problem of the fluorescence of traditional fluorescent molecules becoming weak or quenched in high concentration or aggregated state conditions. Schiff base fluorescent probes have the advantages of simple synthesis, low toxicity, and easy design. They are often used for the detection of various substances. In this review we cover late developments in Schiff base compounds with AIE characteristics working as fluorescence sensors.

Sustainable aggregation-induced emission material based on pectin-l-lysine: Potential antibacterial and monitoring in food spoilage

The demand of smart food detection system which in detecting food spoilage is increasing. In this work, a new type of aggregation-induced emission (AIE) compound was synthesized based on pectin (P) and l-lysine (Lys). P-Lys is an AIE active compound which has the advantages of simple synthesis, easy modification and processability, it also has good water solubility and biocompatibility. Moreover, P-Lys has potential application in detecting Fe³⁺ (oxidation from Fe²⁺) and bacterial in monitoring pork spoilage. In addition, P-Lys also has spectral antibacterial properties which can prevent pork spoilage. The research results shown that P-Lys, as a new type of food testing agent has a useful future in monitoring and protecting the freshness of food.

Neurological recovery and antioxidant effect of erythropoietin for spinal cord injury: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Background

To critically evaluate the neurological recovery effects and antioxidant effects of erythropoietin (EPO) in rat models of spinal cord injury (SCI).

Methods

The PubMed, EMBASE, MEDLINE, ScienceDirect, and Web of Science were searched for animal experiments applying EPO to treat SCI to January 2022. We included studies which examined neurological function by the Basso, Beattie, and Bresnahan (BBB) scale, as well as cavity area and spared area, and determining the molecular-biological analysis of antioxidative effects by malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in spinal cord tissues. Meta-analysis were performed with Review Manager 5.4 software.

Results

A total of 33 studies were included in this review. The results of the meta-analysis showed that SCI rats receiving EPO therapy showed a significant locomotor function recovery after 14 days compared with control, then the superiority of EPO therapy maintained to 28 days from BBB scale. Compared with the control group, the cavity area was reduced [4 studies, weighted mean difference (WMD) = −16.65, 95% CI (−30.74 to −2.55), P = 0.02] and spared area was increased [3 studies, WMD =11.53, 95% CI (1.34 to 21.72), P = 0.03] by EPO. Meanwhile, MDA levels [2 studies, WMD = −0.63 (−1.09 to −0.18), P = 0.007] were improved in the EPO treatment group compared with control, which indicated its antioxidant effect. The subgroup analysis recommended 5,000 UI/kg is the most effective dose [WMD = 4.05 (2.23, 5.88), P &lt; 0.0001], although its effect was not statistically different from that of 1,000 UI/kg. Meanwhile, the different rat strains (Sprague-Dawley vs. Wistar), and models of animals, as well as administration method (single or multiple administration) of EPO did not affect the neuroprotective effect of EPO for SCI.

Conclusions

This systematic review indicated that EPO can promote the recovery of the locomotor function of SCI rats. The mechanism exploration of EPO needs to be verified by experiments, and then carefully designed randomized controlled trials are needed to explore its neural recovery effects.

Update of ultrasound-assembling fabrication and biomedical applications for heterogeneous polymer composites

As a power-driving approach, ultrasound irradiation is very appealing to the preparation or modification of new materials. In the review, we overviewed the latest development of ultrasound-mediated effects or reactions in polymer composites, and demonstrated its unique and powerful aspects on the polymerization or aggregation. The review generalized the different categories of heterogeneous polymer composites by defining the constituents, and described the shapes, sizes and basic properties of various purpose-specific or site-specific products. Importantly, the review paid more attention to the main biomedicine applications of heterogeneous polymer composites, such as drug or bioactive substance entrapment, delivery, release, imaging, and therapy, and emphasized many advantages of ultrasound-assembling approaches and heterogeneous polymer composites in biology and medicine fields. In addition, the review also indicated the prospective challenges of heterogeneous polymer composites both in ultrasound-assembling designs and in biomedical applications.

Chitosan-salicylide Schiff base with aggregation-induced emission property and its multiple applications

Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) active compounds are fascinated due to their unique properties of limiting intramolecular rotation, and they have been developed in the biomedical fields. In this work, AIE material based on the Schiff base compound of chitosan (Cs) and salicylaldehyde (SA) was designed and synthesized. Cs-SA emits weak light in dilute aqueous solution, and emits bright light in concentrated solution and solid, showing obvious AIE performance. In addition, Cs-SA can also be used as a biosensor to detect Fe³⁺, and Cu²⁺, it has good bioimaging behavior. In addition, it can also be used as biosensor to quantitatively detect gram-positive bacteria and gram-negative bacteria, Moreover, Cs-SA shows excellent broad spectrum antibacterial performance in inhibiting E. coli and S. aureus.

Corrigendum to "Photoluminescence of Tilapia skin collagen: Aggregation-induced emission with clustering triggered emission mechanism and its multiple applications" [Int. J. Biol. Macromol. 182 (2021) 1437-1444]

There is an urgent need for natural sources of aggregation-induced emission (AIE) materials which have good water solubility, biocompatibility, and can be produced in large quantities. Here, Tilapia skin collagen (Tsc) is a very abundant protein in nature, with solid-phase and solution-state fluorescence emission effect and its multiple applications was explored.Due to Tsc was in high concentration or aggregation state which shown AIE property. This obvious emission can be account for clustering-triggered emission (CTE) mechanism. The photoluminescence property of Tsc not only provide a deeper understanding of the emission characteristics of proteins, but also has important guiding significance for further elucidating the basis of fluorescence properties.

Ginseng extract and ginsenosides improve neurological function and promote antioxidant effects in rats with spinal cord injury: A meta-analysis and systematic review

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is defined as damage to the spinal cord that temporarily or permanently changes its function. There is no definite treatment established for neurological complete injury patients. This study investigated the effect of ginseng extract and ginsenosides on neurological recovery and antioxidant efficacies in rat models following SCI and explore the appropriate dosage. Searches were done on PubMed, Embase, and Chinese databases, and animal studies matches the inclusion criteria were selected. Pair-wise meta-analysis and subgroup analysis were performed. Ten studies were included, and the overall methodological qualities were low quality. The result showed ginseng extract and ginsenosides significantly improve neurological function, through the Basso, Beattie, and Bresnahan (BBB) locomotor rating scale (pooled MD = 4.40; 95% CI = 3.92 to 4.88; p < 0.00001), significantly decrease malondialdehyde (MDA) (n = 290; pooled MD = −2.19; 95% CI = −3.16 to −1.22; p < 0.0001) and increase superoxide dismutase (SOD) levels (n = 290; pooled MD = 2.14; 95% CI = 1.45 to 2.83; p < 0.00001). Both low (<25 mg/kg) and high dosage (≥25 mg/kg) showed significant improvement in the motor function recovery in SCI rats. Collectively, this review suggests ginseng extract and ginsenosides has a protective effect on SCI, with good safety and a clear mechanism of action and may be suitable for future clinical trials and applications.

Thermo-responsive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)-hyaluronic acid nano-hydrogel and its multiple applications

It is a huge challenge to construct a nanoprobe that can convert temperature stimulation into monochromatic signal with "turn-on" function. Here, a drug delivery system of berberine (BBR)-loaded hyaluronic acid (HA)-modified-L-cysteine (Cys) grafted (N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) was structured. HA-Cys-PN/BBR does not need to introduce other substances or external stimuli, by adjusting the temperature of this system, the fluorescence responsive intensity and reversible reciprocating control of the nanohydrogel with aggregation induced emission (AIE) performance can be realized. In addition, CD44-HA interaction can be used as targeting the delivery of cancer cells, thus, there is a great interest in development of targeting and imaging agents as payloads for tumor tissue therapy. Therefore, it can provide a side of the development with self-released drugs in the therapy of cancers or bacterial infections. Thus, HA-Cys-PN/BBR as AIE reversible nanogel has longer-term applications in biomedical applications.

Treatment of the saline-alkali soil with acidic corn stalk biochar and its effect on the sorghum yield in western Songnen Plain

Due to biochar could improve the physical and chemical properties of soil and promote crop growth, it is widely used in soil remediation, especially in saline soil. However, it is rarely studied of the application of acidic biochar in saline-alkali land. A field experiment with acidic corn stalk biochar (ACSBC) as a soil amendment was carried out in the western Songnen Plain of China. ACSBC (0, 0.15, 0.3, 0.45, 0.6, 0.75, 1, 6 and 15 t ha^-1) was added to the topsoil to evaluate the combined effects on soil and sorghum yield. During the seeding and harvest period, the content of soil water, nutrient elements, cation exchange capacity (CEC), organic matter (OM), soluble cations (K⁺, Ca²⁺, Mg²⁺) increased, Na⁺ content showed opposite trend. However, soil pH decreased averagely with 0.3 and 1.0 during the seeding and harvest period respectively, salinity decreased with 19.37% and 18.14%, exchange sodium percentage (ESP) decreased with 37.08% and 37.04%. The sorghum yield increased 32.98% averagely, significantly by 51.37% and 47.33% with the 0.6 and 1 t ha^-1 of ACSBC treatments respectively. These experimental results show that proper application of ACSBC in saline-alkali soil can effectively improve soil properties and increase sorghum yield.

Thermo/glutathione-sensitive release kinetics of heterogeneous magnetic micro-organogel prepared by sono-catalysis

To improve the loading and delivery for hydrophobic drugs and optimize the release efficiency in tumor microenvironment, a novel core-shell magnetic micro-organogel carrier was successfully prepared by a sono-catalysis process in the study. As-synthesized magnetic micro-organogel had an appropriate dispersibility in water owing to the hydrophilicity of protein shell and could be kept steadily with a well-defined spherical morphology owing to the three-dimensional gel structure of oil core, and it promised an accessible targeted drug delivery owing to its good magnetism-mediated motion ability. Moreover, the magnetic micro-organogel showed a high loading efficiency up to 94.22% for coumarin 6 which was dissolved into the micro-organogel as a model hydrophobic drug. More importantly, the release kinetics revealed that the magnetic micro-organogel had a thermo-sensitive and glutathione (GSH)-sensitive ability to control the drug release, and proved that its release mechanisms referred to the combination of erosion, diffusion and degradation.

Temperature-sensitive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)-chitosan hydrogel for fluorescence sensors in living cells and its antibacterial application

It is meaningful and challenging to design and develop a fluorescent probe for living cell temperature sensors since it should have good cell compatibility and high-resolution features. In this work, the temperature-sensitive polymer of PA-loaded cysteine (Cys) modified chitosan (Cs) grafted PNIPAM (Cs-Cys-PN/PA) with aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE) properties that reversible hydrogel in an aqueous solution is synthesized. Here, we interpret the temperature stimulus as a monochromatic signal through the AIEE active reversible hydrogel of Cs-Cys-PN. In addition, the cytotoxicity test shown that Cs-Cys-PN has good biocompatibility. Cs-Cys-PN can be used to build antibacterial drugs carrier, thereby providing a new platform of self-released drugs for the treatment of bacterial infections.

Current status and influencing factors of fatigue in patients with rheumatoid arthritis: A cross-sectional study in China

AIM

This study aimed to explore the level and influencing factors of fatigue in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

METHODS

This cross-sectional study was conducted in 243 patients with rheumatoid arthritis from April 2016 to March 2017. The Bristol Rheumatoid Arthritis Fatigue Multi-Dimensional Questionnaire, Arthritis Self-Efficacy Scale-8, Visual Analogue Scale for pain, physical function subscale of Short Form 36-Item Health Survey, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, Perceived Social Support Scale, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and a self-designed demographic and disease-related information questionnaire were used to collect the data. Stepwise linear multiple regression was used to clarify the impact of statistically significant variables (P < 0.05) in the independent sample t test, one-way ANOVA and correlation analysis on the level of fatigue.

RESULTS

Stepwise linear multiple regression analyses showed that disease activity, self-efficacy, physical function, pain, depression, duration of morning stiffness and anxiety were major factors influencing fatigue in patients with rheumatoid arthritis, which explained 59.5% of the total variance.

CONCLUSION

Our study demonstrated a moderate level of fatigue in Chinese patients with rheumatoid arthritis. In clinical practice, nurses should explore individualized intervention programmes based on related predictors of fatigue to help patients relieve fatigue.

Seeking Aggregation-Induced Emission Materials in Food: Oat β-Glucan and Its Diverse Applications

With the basic understanding and broad application prospects of luminescent materials, the emission mechanism of unconventional luminescent agents has been revealed gradually. Here, we report a non-conjugated biomass material, oat β-glucan (oat-β-Glu), which actually does not emit light in a dilute solution but emits significantly when forming aggregates. Inherently visible emission of oat-β-Glu from the concentrated solutions and solid state could be observed. In addition, we have observed room temperature phosphorescence in oat-β-Glu powders, which is also unusual in pure organic materials. It can be proposed that the luminescence property of oat-β-Glu originates from the spatial conjugation of the oxygen atoms of oat-β-Glu. This clustering-triggered emission mechanism may well be expanded to other unconventional biomacromolecules, inspiring the rational design of luminescent agents. Due to its good biocompatibility and intrinsic emission characteristics, oat-β-Glu has shown great potential application prospects in bioimaging and biosensors.

Seeking brightness from nature: Sustainable AIE macromolecule with clustering-triggered emission of xanthan gum and its multiple applications

Unconventional biomacromolecule luminescent agents have attracted widespread attention due to the potential applications in diverse fields. In order to explore new luminescent agents and gain a comprehensive understanding of their emission mechanism, the emission behavior of xanthan gum was investigated. Xanthan gum shown obvious aggregation-induced emission (AIE) characteristics in concentration solution. Moreover, xanthan gum has shown potential values in intracellular imaging and can be used as a biosensor for detecting Fe³⁺ and Cu²⁺ in human serum.

Photoluminescence of Tilapia skin collagen: Aggregation-induced emission with clustering triggered emission mechanism and its multiple applications

There is an urgent need for natural sources of aggregation-induced emission (AIE) materials which have good water solubility, biocompatibility, and can be produced in large quantities. Here, Tilapia skin collagen (Tsc) is a very abundant protein in nature, with solid-phase and solution-state fluorescence emission effect and its multiple applications was explored. Due to Tsc was in high concentration or aggregation state which shown AIE property. This obvious emission can be account for clustering-triggered emission (CTE) mechanism. The photoluminescence property of Tsc not only provide a deeper understanding of the emission characteristics of proteins, but also has important guiding significance for further elucidating the basis of fluorescence properties.

Sonochemical preparation of folate-decorated reductive-responsive carboxymethylcellulose-based nanocapsules for targeted drug delivery

In this study, a biocompatible folate-decorated reductive-responsive carboxymethylcellulose-based nanocapsules (FA-RCNCs) were designed and prepared via sonochemical method for targeted delivery and controlled release of hydrophobic drugs. The shell of FA-RCNCs was cross-linked by disulfide bonds formed from hydrosulfuryl groups on the thiolated carboxymethylcellulose (TCMC) and encapsulated hydrophobic drug dispersed in the oil phase into nanocapsules. Moreover, the size and morphology of drug loaded FA-RCNCs were characterized by DLS, SEM and CLSM which indicated that the synthesized nanocapsules have suitable size range and excellent stability for circulating in the bloodstream. The drug release rate of FA-RCNCs could be controlled by adjusting their sizes and shell thickness, which could be dominated by the concentration of TCMC and sonochemical conditions. Furthermore, the obtained FA-RCNCs could be ingested into Hela cells via folate-receptor (FR)-mediated endocytosis and quickly release drugs under reductive environment, which demonstrated that FA-RCNCs could become potential hydrophobic drugs carries for cancer therapy.

A power-triggered preparation strategy of nano-structured inorganics: sonosynthesis

Ultrasound irradiation covers many chemical reactions crucially aiming to design and synthesize various structured materials as an enduring trend in frontier research studies. Here, we focus on the latest progress of ultrasound-assisted synthesis and present the basic principles or mechanisms of sonosynthesis (or sonochemical synthesis) from ultrasound irradiation in a brand new way, including primary sonosynthesis, secondary sonosynthesis, and synergetic sonosynthesis. This current review describes in detail the various sonochemical synthesis strategies for nano-structured inorganic materials and the unique aspects of products including the size, morphology, structure, and properties. In addition, the review points out the probable challenges and technological potential for future advancement. We hope that such a review can provide a comprehensive understanding of sonosynthesis and emphasize the great significance of structured materials synthesis as a power-induced strategy broadening the updated applications of ultrasound.

Sonochemical fabrication of inorganic nanoparticles for applications in catalysis

Catalysis covers almost all the chemical reactions or processes aiming for many applications. Sonochemistry has emerged in designing and developing the synthesis of nano-structured materials, and the latest progress mainly focuses on the synthetic strategies, product properties as well as catalytic applications. This current review simply presents the sonochemical effects under ultrasound irradiation, roughly describes the ultrasound-synthesized inorganic nano-materials, and highlights the sonochemistry applications in the inorganics-based catalysis processes including reduction, oxidation, degradation, polymerization, etc. Or all in all, the review hopes to provide an integrated understanding of sonochemistry, emphasize the great significance of ultrasound-assisted synthesis in structured materials as a unique strategy, and broaden the updated applications of ultrasound irradiation in the catalysis fields.

Sonochemical catalysis as a unique strategy for the fabrication of nano-/micro-structured inorganics

Ultrasound-assisted approaches, as an important trend in material synthesis, have emerged for designing and creating nano-/micro-structures. This review simply presents the basic principles of ultrasound irradiation including acoustic cavitation, sonochemical effects, physical and/or mechanical effects, and on the basis of the latest progress, it newly summarizes sonochemical catalysis for the fabrication of nano-structured or micro-structured inorganic materials such as metals, alloys, metal compounds, non-metal materials, and inorganic composites, where the theories or mechanisms of catalytic synthetic routes, and the morphologies, structures, sizes, properties and applications of products are described in detail. In the review, a few technological potentials and probable challenges of sonochemical catalysis are also highlighted for the future advance of synthesis methods. Therefore, sonochemical catalysis or ultrasound-assisted synthesis will serve as a unique strategy to reveal its great significance in material fabrication.

The complete chloroplast genome sequence of Sargentodoxa cuneata: genome structure and genomic resources

Sargentodoxa cuneata is used as traditional Chinese medicine. In this study, we report its complete chloroplast genome by Illumina pair-end sequencing. The total chloroplast (cp) genome size was 158,094 bp in length, containing a pair of inverted repeats of 26,132 bp, separated by large single-copy and small single-copy regions of 86,508 bp and 19,322 bp, respectively. The chloroplast genome of S. cuneata encodes 113 different genes, including 79 protein-coding genes, 30 transfer RNAs, and 4 ribosomal RNAs. A total of 84 perfect chloroplast microsatellites were analyzed in the S. cuneata. The majority of the SSRs in this chloroplast genome are mononucleotides (66.67%). The reconstructed phylogeny revealed that S. cuneata was sister to the remaining Lardizabalaceae.

PVA can emit blue light under UV light and the mechanism of this fluorescence was studied in this paper. PVA can be added to other materials to broaden their properties. The fluorescence of PVA has great application prospects.

miR-424-3p Contributes to the Malignant Progression and Chemoresistance of Gastric Cancer

Background

Gastric cancer (GC) is one of the most common and lethal malignancies worldwide. Therefore, a better understanding of the mechanism of its malignant progression and chemoresistance will be helpful for the treatment of patients with GC.

Methods

The gene expression profiles downloaded from GEO database and the TargetScan Human were used to identify the key regulation model based on miRNA by bioinformatics analyses. The regulation of miRNA to target was clarified by luciferase assay, qPCR, and Western blotting. Then, the in vitro and in vivo experiments were further conducted by overexpression or knockdown of miRNA and/or target to examine the regulation effects and clarify the mechanism.

Results

In the present study, miR-424-3p was identified to be differentially expressed among normal gastric, GC, and chemoresistant GC tissues. Target analysis results indicated that ABCC2, a chemoresistance-related gene, was a regulated target of miR-424-3p. The in vitro and in vivo experiment results further demonstrated that miR-424-3p relied on ABCC2-induced chemoresistance to promote GC proliferation and metastasis.

Conclusion

Overall, this study revealed that miR-424-3p contributed to the malignant progression and chemoresistance of GC. Thus, miR-424-3p could be a potential target for the treatment of GC.

Urban-Rural Differences in Bone Mineral Density and its Association with Reproductive and Menstrual Factors Among Older Women

PURPOSE

This study aimed to compare the bone mineral density (BMD) of older women living in rural and urban areas, and evaluate the potential factors affecting the risk of osteoporosis.

METHODS

We recruited 574 women aged 65 years or older from rural areas and 496 from urban areas in Shanghai, China. The BMD values of the lumbar vertebrae and total left hip were measured by a dual energy X-ray absorptiometry densitometer. We also recorded information about education level, family income, medications, reproductive and menstrual history, diet, smoking, and alcohol consumption.

RESULTS

Women in urban areas had significantly higher BMD in their lumbar spine, and there was a dramatic increase in the proportion of women with osteoporosis in rural areas. The age at menarche was significantly higher among women living in rural areas, and there were more years from menarche to menopause among urban women. Rural women had significantly higher numbers of both pregnancies and parity, and a significantly lower age at first parity. In multiple linear regression analyses, years from menarche to menopause was independently related to high lumbar spine BMD, while age at menarche and parity was independently related to low lumbar spine BMD.

CONCLUSION

More older women in rural areas had osteoporosis. Later menarche, less years from menarche to menopause and higher parity might partially contribute to decreased BMD among women in rural areas. More attention should be paid to women in rural areas to prevent bone loss and further bone and health impairment.

Echinacoside attenuates inflammatory response in a rat model of cervical spondylotic myelopathy via inhibition of excessive mitochondrial fission

Cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) is a leading cause of spinal cord dysfunction with few treatment options. Although mitochondrial dynamics are linked to a wide range of pathological changes in neurodegenerative diseases, a connection between aberrant mitochondrial dynamics and CSM remains to be illuminated. In addition, mechanisms underlying the emerging anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective effects of echinacoside (ECH), the main active ingredient of Cistanche salsa, are poorly understood. We hypothesized that excessive mitochondrial fission plays a critical role in regulating inflammatory responses in CSM, and ECH might alleviate such responses by regulating mitochondrial dynamics. To this end, we assessed the effects of ECH and Mdivi-1, a selective inhibitor of dynamin-related protein (Drp1), in a rat model of chronic cervical cord compression and activated BV2 cells. Our results showed that rats with Mdivi-1 intervention had improved motor function compared with vehicle-treated rats. Indeed, Mdivi-1 treatment attenuated pro-inflammatory cytokine expression, as well as activation of the nod-like receptor family pyrin domain-containing 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome, nuclear transcription factor-κB (NF-κB), and Drp1 in lesions. Compared with vehicle-treated rats, compression sites of Mdivi-1-treated animals exhibited elongated mitochondrial morphologies and reduced reactive oxygen species (ROS). Similarly, ECH-treated rats exhibited neurological recovery and suppression of inflammatory response or related signals in the lesion area after treatment. Interestingly, ECH treatment partly reversed aberrant mitochondrial fragmentation and oxidative stress within the lesion area. In vitro data suggested that ECH suppressed activated microglia by modulating activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome and NF-κB signaling. Furthermore, we observed that ECH markedly inhibited Drp1 translocation onto mitochondria, whereby it regulated mitochondrial dynamics and ROS production, which act as regulators of NLRP3 inflammasome activation and NF-κB signaling. Thus, our findings reveal that mitochondrial dynamics modulate inflammatory responses during CSM. Moreover, ECH may attenuate neuroinflammation in rats subjected to chronic cervical cord compression by regulating Drp1-dependent mitochondrial fission and activation of downstream signaling.

Antifungal activity of water-soluble products obtained following the liquefaction of cornstalk with sub-critical water

Cornstalks are the leftover leaves and stems in a field after corn harvest. They are a potential biomass resource but are underutilized in agricultural production systems. To examine the chemical components in cornstalks and their corresponding functions, blocky cornstalks were treated in water at temperatures of 190, 210, 230, 250, and 270 °C in a high-pressure reactor. Water-soluble products (WSPs) were extracted from these treatments, and their chemical compositions were analyzed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and their antifungal activities were determined using a bioassay. It was found that WSPs contained 28.7-40.1% phenols, 27.9-36.6% ketones, 0-2.6% alcohols, 4.9-10.1% esters, 5.4-7.8% organic acids, 1.3-12% aldehydes, and 5.5-18.4% of other organic compounds such as nitrogen- and sulfur-containing compounds, furan compounds, and benzene compounds. The inhibition the growth of the plant pathogen Fusarium oxysporum by WSPs was affected by temperature. WSP-270 (obtained at 270 °C) exhibited the best growth-inhibition efficacy. Under a biomicroscope, WSP-270-treated F. oxysporum showed a deformed and swollen hypha, and an increased number of bifurcations, as well as an expansion of growing apexes of new bifurcations. Therefore, the antifungal activity of WSPs could be used to manage soilborne plant pathogens.
