Abstract
Disease severity in plant pathology is often measured by the amount of a plant or plant part that exhibits disease symptoms. This is typically assessed using a numerical scale, which allows a standardized, convenient, and quick method of rating. These scales, known as quantitative ordinal scales (QOS), divide the percentage scale into a predetermined number of intervals. There are various ways to analyze these ordinal data, with traditional methods involving the use of midpoint conversion to represent the interval. However, this may not be precise enough, as it is only an estimate of the true value. In this case, the data may be considered interval-censored, meaning that we have some knowledge of the value but not an exact measurement. This type of uncertainty is known as censoring, and techniques that address censoring, such as survival analysis (SA), use all available information and account for this uncertainty. To investigate the pros and cons of using SA with QOS measurements, we conducted a simulation based on three pathosystems. The results showed that SA almost always outperformed midpoint conversion with data analyzed using a t test, particularly when data were not normally distributed. Midpoint conversion is currently a standard procedure. In certain cases, the midpoint approach required a 400% increase in sample size to achieve the same power as the SA method. However, as the mean severity increases, fewer additional samples are needed (approximately an additional 100%), regardless of the assessment method used. Based on these findings, we conclude that SA is a valuable method for enhancing the power of hypothesis testing when analyzing QOS severity data. Future research should investigate the wider use of survival analysis techniques in plant pathology and their potential applications in the discipline.

Abstract
There is increased pressure by governments and industry to develop national surveillance programmes to evaluate antimicrobial usage (AMU) in animals. This article presents a methodological approach to cost-effectiveness analysis of such programmes. Seven objectives are proposed for AMU surveillance in animals: quantifying use, finding trends, detecting hotspots, identifying risk factors, encouraging research, evaluating the impact of policies and diseases, and demonstrating compliance with regulations. Achieving these objectives would assist in making decisions about potential interventions, help to generate trust, incentivise the reduction of AMU and decrease the risk of antimicrobial resistance. The cost-effectiveness of each objective can be found by dividing the cost of the programme by the performance indicators of the surveillance required to meet the objective concerned. The precision and accuracy of surveillance outputs are suggested here as useful performance indicators. Precision depends on the level of surveillance coverage (SC) and surveillance representativeness (SR). Accuracy is influenced by the quality of farm records and SR. The authors argue that there is an increase in marginal cost for each unit increase of SC, SR and data quality. This is caused by the increasing difficulty of recruiting farmers due to potential barriers such as staff capacity, capital availability, computing literacy and availability, and geographical differences, among other factors. A simulation model was conducted to test the approach, using the quantification of AMU as the primary objective, and to provide evidence of the application of the law of diminishing returns. Cost-effectiveness analysis can be used to support decisions on the level of coverage, representativeness and data quality required in such AMU programmes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Feline chronic inflammatory enteropathy is an idiopathic disease with limited information on variables that might affect treatment outcome and survival. The aim of this study was to determine if clinicopathological variables were associated with death due to gastrointestinal disease in cats with chronic inflammatory enteropathy. MATERIALS AND METHODS Three medical records databases were retrospectively searched for cats diagnosed with chronic inflammatory enteropathy at the Royal Veterinary College between June 2008 and November 2021. Intestinal biopsy specimens of eligible cases were re-reviewed by one board-certified veterinary pathologist. Outcome information was obtained by contact with the referring veterinary surgeon. Two univariable binary logistic regression models and a Fisher's exact test were performed to assess the association between the outcome of death due to gastrointestinal disease or its short-term survival (≤ versus >1 year) with clinicopathological variables and the attainment of clinical remission. RESULTS Sixty-five cats diagnosed with chronic inflammatory enteropathy between September 2011 and August 2021 were included in the study with follow-up information available for 54 cats (83%). Of these 54 cats, 20 (37%) were euthanised due to gastrointestinal disease (median 129.5 days; range 8 to 2970 days). Twenty-five (46%) cats were alive and in clinical remission (median 916 days; range 78 to 2113 days) with 16 (64%) diagnosed with food-responsive enteropathy. Attaining clinical remission reduced the likelihood of subsequent death due to gastrointestinal disease. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Measured physical and laboratory variables at the time of histopathological diagnosis of chronic inflammatory enteropathy were not predictors of death. Alternative diagnostic measures are required to definitively investigate outcome and survival in cats with chronic inflammatory enteropathy.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD) is the most common cardiac condition in adult dogs. The disease progresses over several years and affected dogs may develop congestive heart failure (HF). Research has shown that myocardial metabolism is altered in cardiac disease, leading to a reduction in β-oxidation of fatty acids and an increased dependence upon glycolysis. OBJECTIVES This study aimed to evaluate whether a shift in substrate use occurs in canine patients with MMVD; a naturally occurring model of human disease. METHODS Client-owned dogs were longitudinally evaluated at a research clinic in London, UK and paired serum samples were selected from visits when patients were in ACVIM stage B1: asymptomatic disease without cardiomegaly, and stage C: HF. Samples were processed using ultra-performance liquid chromatography mass spectrometry and lipid profiles were compared using mixed effects models with false discovery rate adjustment. The effect of disease stage was evaluated with patient breed entered as a confounder. Features that significantly differed were screened for selection for annotation efforts using reference databases. RESULTS Dogs in HF had altered concentrations of lipid species belonging to several classes previously associated with cardiovascular disease. Concentrations of certain acylcarnitines, phospholipids and sphingomyelins were increased after individuals had developed HF, whilst some ceramides and lysophosphatidylcholines decreased. CONCLUSIONS The canine metabolome appears to change as MMVD progresses. Findings from this study suggest that in HF myocardial metabolism may be characterised by reduced β-oxidation. This proposed explanation warrants further research.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) levels in breast milk of mothers delivering preterm infants and their effects on the early growth and development of infants. Methods: In this prospective cohort study, full-term and preterm newborns whose parents decided to breastfeed were recruited from Peking University Third Hospital between December 1, 2017 and November 30, 2018. The preterm infants were divided based on their gestational ages into extremely preterm (<28 weeks), very preterm (28-31+6 weeks) and moderate to late preterm (32-36+6 weeks) groups. Breast milk was collected from mothers at 7, 14, 28 and 120d postpartum. 368 breast milk samples were collected from 125 mothers in this study, including 54 mothers of full-term infants, 23 mothers of moderate to late preterm infants, 39 mothers of very preterm infants, and 9 mothers of extremely preterm infants. Ultra-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometer (UPLC-MS/MS) was used to determine the concentration of 2'-fucosyllactose (2'FL), 3-fucosyllactose (3FL), 3'-sialyllactose (3'SL), A-tetrasaccharide (P1), lacto-N-tetraose (LNT), lacto-N-neotetraose (LNnT), lacto-N-fucopentaose Ⅱ (LNFP-Ⅱ) and lacto-N-fucopentaose Ⅴ (LNFP-Ⅴ). Secretor status of mothers was defined as 2'-fucosyllactose (2'FL) concentration in colostrum and transitional milk greater than 200 μg/mL. Weight gain and the occurrence of allergic diseases of infants were collected at 120 d(4 months) postpartum. The chi-square test or the Fisher's exact test was used for the comparison of categorical data between groups; Kruskal-Wallis test and Wilcoxon rank sum test were used for comparison of continuous data between groups. Nemenyi test was used for multiple comparison. Results: 79.2% (99/125) of the mothers were secretor. There were no statistical differences between groups in the secretor status of mothers (χ²=1.31,P>0.05). The total concentration of HMOs peaked at 1-2 weeks postpartum. Compared to the preterm milk, the HMOs from the term milk was trending downwards at an earlier time. In the breast milk of secretor mothers on 28 d, total concentration of HMOs significant differed among the three groups of preterm milk and the term milk, with the median value of 4 587.09,4 615.25,5 277.44,5 476.03 μg/mL, respectively (Kruskal-Wallis χ²=8.1234,P=0.044). When analyzed by the median weight gain of the infants (low vs high weight gain) at 4 months postpartum, 2'FL was significantly lower in the high weight gain group at 7 d (1 818.04 μg/mL vs 2 181.67 μg/mL, W=1 386,P=0.018), while LNT & LNnT were significantly higher (1 182.36 μg/mL vs 1 053.62 μg/mL, W=816,P=0.044). The level of 3FL at 120 d was significantly affected by presence of allergic disease in infants, breast milk from mothers of infants with allergic disease had lower 3FL than those from mothers of infants without allergic disease (256.17 μg/mL vs 286.18 μg/mL, W=564,P=0.026). Conclusions: The overall profiles of HMOs in breast milk of mothers delivering preterm infants was basically the same as that of mothers delivering term infants; individual HMOs play a role in weight gain and the development of allergic diseases in preterm infants, but the mechanism is unclear and needs further study.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study first assessed the occurrence of major depressive disorder (MDD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), symptoms of poor sleep quality and high levels of distress among residents, caused by reported long-term stress from environmental pollution emitted from the biggest petroleum chemistry factory (PCF) in the world. METHODS A total of 328 long-term residents (Mean age = 57.5, SD = 16.5 years, ranging from 22 to 95) were recruited randomly from a total population of 26,632 in Mailiao township in Taiwan next to the PCF. Trained assistants used the Disaster-Related Psychological Screening test, the Perception of Life Threats Caused by the SCNP questionnaire and the Sleep Quality Scale to interview the participants. RESULTS The results support our hypotheses that most of the residents (71%) would report life threats caused by the PCF. The residents displayed higher rates of major depressive episodes (24.1%), PTSD (24.5%) and symptoms of poor sleep quality. The more they felt threat from the PCF, the stronger the connection with MDD and PTSD symptoms. CONCLUSION The results indicate an increased prevalence of MDD, PTSD and symptoms of poor sleep quality in those exposed to environmental pollution from the PCF, highlighting the need for prompt prevention, diagnostic and therapeutic attention.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE In 2013, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) included the diagnostic criteria of Internet gaming disorder (IGD). Then, in 2019, the 11th Revision of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) categorized gaming disorder (GD) as an addictive disorder. This review aimed to review the raised concerns, debate, and research of IGD or GD criteria and provide suggestions to resolve them. METHODS A narrative review was conducted, and PubMed was searched for articles mentioning concerns and research on the DSM-5 criteria for IGD, ICD-11 criteria for GD, or criteria for other synonyms, such as problematic gaming or gaming addiction. A total of 107 articles were identified. RESULTS Concerns were organized into three categories: conceptual framework, moral panic, and diagnostic validity. Most argumentations supported the proposition that GD and other substance use disorders have similar presentations. A clear definition of GD and adequate public education could prevent rather than exacerbate moral panic. Several researchers reported concerns regarding the nosology, diagnostic validity, and wording of each criterion. However, the threshold, five of the nine criteria with impaired function, demonstrated adequate validity in interview studies. CONCLUSION The current findings support the addiction framework, functional impairment, and validity of the GD criteria. However, further prospective, experimental, and clinical studies validating these findings are warranted. Moreover, an integrative review or debate conference could contribute to the organization of the available results and concept development. Aggregating adequate scientific information could allay or resolve concerns related to the diagnosis of GD.

Abstract
Slaughterhouse condemnation of broiler chickens results from identification of polymorphic pathological conditions during meat inspection from arrival and on the slaughter line. While conditions that result in condemnation are multifactorial, identification of factors that are common for a number of categories could be valuable for developing strategies to reduce total condemnation. This study aimed to identify those condemnation categories that were most common in batches of broiler chickens and to determine and compare associated risk factors. In the first step, retrospective meat inspection records for 55,918 broiler batches from one large broiler integrator for 2015-2017 were used for association rules analysis. Results identified a network of nine associated condemnation categories: whole carcass condemnation for ascites, abnormal colour, perihepatitis, cellulitis, hard breast, tumours and dead on arrival, and liver only and heart only most often associated with hepatitis and pericarditis, respectively. Secondly, a longitudinal study collected data on 109 explanatory variables from broiler parental flocks to slaughterhouse characteristics between January 2015 and December 2017. Condemnation outcome data were obtained from meat inspection records for 539 broiler batches participating in the study. Parental flock-, rearing farm-, shed- and transport-level risk factors were assessed for each outcome using mixed-effects multivariable Poisson regression including shed and farm as random effects. A Poisson regression tree method was used as the first step to identify variables most relevant for analysis and comparison across the outcomes. No single production factor was associated with all nine of the condemnation outcomes investigated in this study, although some were shared across multiple outcomes: age of parental flock at time of lay, flock-level Campylobacter spp. frequency, broiler chick weight at seven days of age, weight at slaughter, type of broiler removal (i.e. thinning, final depopulation), catcher team, number of birds per transport crate, slaughterhouse shift number, and type of slaughterhouse line. Broiler chickens removed during final depopulation were at greatest risk of condemnation. Condemnation rates for cellulitis and tumours were found to be higher in broilers inspected by night shift at the slaughterhouse. Discovery of an apparent protective effect of a higher number of broilers per transport crate was unexpected. These findings provide information for the broiler industry on production chain factors that might be amenable to targeted intervention to improve future efforts for control of condemnation.

Abstract
Background Pigmentary keratitis (PK) is commonly recognised in Pugs, but its aetiology is not completely understood. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and associated features of PK in Pugs in the United Kingdom (UK). Results A total of 210 Pugs (420 eyes) were recruited from 12 UK dog shows and social events. The median age of Pugs recruited was 2.50 years (range 0.25–16.25 years). Pigmentary keratitis was detected in 369/420 (87.8%) eyes and in at least one eye 193/210 (91.9%) Pugs, of which 17/193 (8.8%) were affected unilaterally and 176/193 (91.2%) bilaterally. Pigmentary keratitis was typically mild to moderate (46.3 and 49.9% of eyes, respectively). Detection of PK was significantly associated with increased age (P = 0.002) and the presence of medial entropion of the lower eyelid (MELE) (P = 0.001). Severity of PK was significantly associated with the grade of MELE (P < 0.001). There was also a correlation between the presence of limbal pigment and PK (P = 0.036) that warrants further study. Conclusions This study estimated a high disease prevalence of PK in UK Pugs, and demonstrated significant associations with age and the presence of MELE. These associations, which have not been previously reported, offer an insight into the underlying pathophysiology of this condition in Pugs. The results encourage further population research, such as prospective longitudinal studies. These findings also support the development of clinical and breeding strategies based on the reduction of MELE and, possibly, limbal pigment.

Abstract
The incidence of race-day injuries in Great Britain (GB) is higher on all-weather (AW) surfaces than on turf. However, to date no studies have focused on identifying risk factors for injury specific to AW racing. Therefore, the objective of the current study was to determine risk factors for fatality, distal limb fracture (DLF) and episodes of epistaxis in flat racing Thoroughbreds racing on AW surfaces in GB. Data included all flat racing starts on AW surfaces (n=258,193) and race-day veterinary events recorded between 2000 and 2013. Information on additional course-level variables was gathered during face-to-face interviews with racecourse clerks. Horse-, race- and course-level risk factors for each outcome were assessed using mixed-effects multivariable logistic regression including horse as a random effect. A classification tree method was used to identify potential interaction terms for inclusion in the models. During the study period, there were 233 fatalities resulting in a fatality incidence of 0.90 per 1000 starts; 245 DLF with a resultant DLF incidence of 0.95 per 1000 starts and 410 episodes of epistaxis resulting in an epistaxis incidence of 1.59 per 1000 starts. Risk factors varied for each outcome, although some factors were similar across models including the going, racing intensity, horse age, age at first race start, horse and trainer performance variables. Generally, older horses and those that had started racing at an older age were at higher risk of an adverse outcome, albeit with an interaction between the two variables in the fatality model. Faster going increased the odds of epistaxis and DLF but not fatality. Increasing race distance increased the odds of fatality but reduced the odds of epistaxis. Epistaxis was associated with type of AW surface (Fibresand versus Polytrack®), but DLF and fatality were not. This study provides further evidence of the association between the risk of race-day injuries and fatalities and current age, age at first start, race distance, going and horse performance. These findings provide the racing industry with information to develop strategies to reduce the occurrence of race-day events on AW surfaces.

Abstract
Background Hyperthyroidism is very common in older cats, but the etiopathogenesis is poorly understood. Decreased risk of hyperthyroidism has been reported in certain colorpoint breeds, and this observation previously has been hypothesized to result from relatively greater tyrosine availability for thyroid hormone production because of limited ability to convert tyrosine to melanin pigment. However, studies investigating a potential link between coat pigmentation and risk of hyperthyroidism are limited. Objective To identify associations between coat phenotype and hyperthyroidism by investigation of breed, coat color, and hair length as risk factors for the disease. Animals Data were used from 4,705 cats aged ≥10 years, referred to a single veterinary teaching hospital (2006–2014) in the United Kingdom. Methods Retrospective, epidemiological, cross‐sectional study using Bayesian multivariable logistic regression to assess risk factors for hyperthyroidism. Results Burmese (odds ratio [OR], 0.01; 0.00–0.23; P = .004), Tonkinese (OR, 0.05; 0.00–0.95; P = .046), Persian (OR, 0.21; 0.10–0.44; P < .001), Siamese (OR, 0.27; 0.12–0.61; P = .002), Abyssinian (OR, 0.04; 0.00–0.74; P = .031), and British shorthair (OR, 0.47; 0.28–0.79; P = .004) breeds had decreased risk of hyperthyroidism compared to domestic shorthairs. Longhaired, nonpurebred cats (OR, 1.30; 1.03–1.64; P = .028) were at increased risk of hyperthyroidism. Coat color/pattern was not associated with hyperthyroidism in nonpurebred cats. Conclusions and Clinical Importance We identified decreased risk of hyperthyroidism in the Tonkinese, Abyssinian, and British shorthair breeds, identified an association between risk of hyperthyroidism and hair length, and confirmed decreased risk in Burmese, Siamese, and Persian breeds. Additional studies are warranted to further investigate these findings.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to use automated activity, lying, and rumination monitors to characterize prepartum behavior and predict calving in dairy cattle. Data were collected from 20 primiparous and 33 multiparous Holstein dairy cattle from September 2011 to May 2013 at the University of Kentucky Coldstream Dairy. The HR Tag (SCR Engineers Ltd., Netanya, Israel) automatically collected neck activity and rumination data in 2-h increments. The IceQube (IceRobotics Ltd., South Queensferry, United Kingdom) automatically collected number of steps, lying time, standing time, number of transitions from standing to lying (lying bouts), and total motion, summed in 15-min increments. IceQube data were summed in 2-h increments to match HR Tag data. All behavioral data were collected for 14 d before the predicted calving date. Retrospective data analysis was performed using mixed linear models to examine behavioral changes by day in the 14 d before calving. Bihourly behavioral differences from baseline values over the 14 d before calving were also evaluated using mixed linear models. Changes in daily rumination time, total motion, lying time, and lying bouts occurred in the 14 d before calving. In the bihourly analysis, extreme values for all behaviors occurred in the final 24 h, indicating that the monitored behaviors may be useful in calving prediction. To determine whether technologies were useful at predicting calving, random forest, linear discriminant analysis, and neural network machine-learning techniques were constructed and implemented using R version 3.1.0 (R Foundation for Statistical Computing, Vienna, Austria). These methods were used on variables from each technology and all combined variables from both technologies. A neural network analysis that combined variables from both technologies at the daily level yielded 100.0% sensitivity and 86.8% specificity. A neural network analysis that combined variables from both technologies in bihourly increments was used to identify 2-h periods in the 8 h before calving with 82.8% sensitivity and 80.4% specificity. Changes in behavior and machine-learning alerts indicate that commercially marketed behavioral monitors may have calving prediction potential.

Abstract
Background Hypovitaminosis D has previously been shown to be prevalent amongst dogs with protein losing enteropathy (PLE). The hypothesis of this study was that Low 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH) D) serum concentrations could be a risk factor for negative outcome in dogs with PLE. Forty-three dogs diagnosed with PLE (2005–2014) and which serum Vitamin D serum concentrations were collected and archived at −80 Degrees C were analyzed. Post-diagnostic communication with referring veterinarians was made to determine outcome of PLE dogss: Dogs which died due to PLE within 4 months after diagnosis (negative outcome group, n = 22) and dogs alive or which died due to another disease at the end point of the study (1 year after diagnosis, good outcome group, n = 21). Serum samples taken at the time of diagnosis were analysed for ionized calcium (iCa) concentrations and serum 25(OH) D concentration. Results Clinical (CCECAI) scores, age at PLE diagnosis, and iCa concentrations were not significantly different between dog groups. A significantly greater (p < 0.001) number of PLE dogs treated with hydrolyzed or elimination diet alone showed good outcome as compared to the PLE negative outcome group. Median serum 25(OH) D concentration was significantly (p = 0.017) lower in dogs with negative outcome versus PLE dogs with good outcome. Using logistic regression analysis, 25(OH) D serum concentration was shown to be a statistically significant factor for outcome determination. Cox regression analysis yielded a hazard ratio of 0.974 (95% CI 0.949, 0.999) per each one nmol/l increase in serum 25(OH) D concentration. Conclusions Low serum 25(OH) D concentration in PLE dogs was significantly associated with poor outcome. Further studies are required to investigate the clinical efficacy of Vitamin D (cholecalciferol) as a potential therapeutic agent for dogs with PLE.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To date, no large scale studies have reported race-day events requiring veterinary attention in British Thoroughbreds racing on the flat. Quantifying and describing common injuries and health conditions affecting racehorses will enable targeted risk factor analysis aimed at reducing their occurrence. OBJECTIVE To describe the type and incidence of race-day veterinary events experienced by Thoroughbred racehorses participating in flat racing in the UK. STUDY DESIGN Retrospective cohort study (2000 to 2013). METHODS Veterinary events recorded by race-day veterinarians were retrieved and linked to race start data. Race-day veterinary events were described by type, location and anatomical structure(s) affected and whether the outcome was fatal or not. Incidence per 1000 starts was calculated, both overall and by year. Stratified incidence rates were calculated for selected event categories by specific course- and horse-level variables. RESULTS There were 7993 events experienced by 6727 horses, with an incidence of 9.37 events per 1000 starts. Soft tissue injuries other than tendon and ligament injuries were the most commonly occurring veterinary events (24.1%), followed by gait observations (21.2%) and respiratory conditions (21.2%). In total, 13.8% of events were bone injuries. The incidence of fatality (n = 628) was 0.76 per 1000 starts. Most (485/628, 77.2%) fatal events were bone injuries, 64 were due to cardiac conditions and 54 due to tendon and ligament injuries. All-weather tracks had a higher incidence of veterinary events and fatalities than turf tracks. Firmer (turf) or faster (all-weather) going were associated with a higher incidence of all veterinary events. MAIN LIMITATIONS Events were based on presumptive, rather than definitive, veterinary diagnosis. CONCLUSION The most common events experienced by racehorses on race-day were relatively minor and not career-ending. Although more severe bone, joint, tendon and ligament injuries were less common, they had a greater impact on whether the outcome of the event was fatal.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Corticosteroid treatment is commonly required in veterinary patients for treatment of inflammatory, immune-mediated, neurologic, and neoplastic diseases, which also may require assisted enteral nutrition via percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG). OBJECTIVE To evaluate complications associated with PEG use in dogs and cats receiving corticosteroid treatment. ANIMALS Forty-two animals were included in the study: 12 dogs and 2 cats in the steroid group and 26 dogs and 2 cats in the control group. METHODS Medical records, between January 2006 and March 2015, were reviewed. Patients were included if the PEG tube was in use for at least 24 hours and if complete medical records were available. Patients were assigned to the control group if they were not treated with corticosteroids during PEG use or to the steroid group if they had received corticosteroids during PEG tube use. Complications were classified as minor, moderate, and major in severity. Maximum severity complication rate was compared between groups. RESULTS The general prevalence of complications was found to be similar between groups (P = .306), but in the steroid group, 43% of the cases developed a major severity complication compared with 18% of the control group (P = .054). CONCLUSION AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE Owners of dogs and cats receiving corticosteroids, in which PEG is planned, should be counseled about possible complications beyond those associated with PEG tube usage alone.

BACKGROUND Neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) is an early indicator of acute kidney injury (AKI) in dogs and its use has not been evaluated in dogs with sepsis. ANIMALS Fifteen dogs with sepsis requiring laparotomy (study dogs) and 10 dogs undergoing surgery for intervertebral disc disease (control dogs). OBJECTIVE To determine whether NGAL increases in dogs with sepsis undergoing emergency laparotomy and whether it is correlated with development of AKI and survival. METHODS Longitudinal study conducted at a referral teaching hospital. Serum neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (sNGAL), urinary NGAL normalized to urinary creatinine concentration (UNCR), and serum creatinine concentration were measured at 4 time points (admission, after anesthesia, and 24 and 48 hours postsurgery). Development of AKI (increase in serum creatinine concentration of 0.3 mg/dL) and in-hospital mortality were recorded. Linear mixed-model analysis was employed to assess differences between groups over time. Mann-Whitney U-test was performed for comparison of continuous variables between groups and Chi square or Fisher's exact tests were used to assess correlation between discrete data. RESULTS Serum NGAL and UNCR were significantly higher in study dogs across all time points (P = .007 and P < .001, respectively) compared with controls. Urinary NGAL normalized to creatinine in the study group was not significantly different between survivors (n = 12) and nonsurvivors (n = 3). Dogs that received hydroxyethyl starch had significantly higher UNCR across all time points (P = .04) than those that did not. DISCUSSION-CONCLUSION Serum neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin and UNCR are increased in dogs with sepsis requiring emergency laparotomy. Additional studies are needed to evaluate its role as a marker of AKI in this population.

Abstract
This study included 2 objectives. The first objective was to describe estrus-related changes in parameters automatically recorded by the CowManager SensOor (Agis Automatisering, Harmelen, the Netherlands), DVM bolus (DVM Systems LLC, Greeley, CO), HR Tag (SCR Engineers Ltd., Netanya, Israel), IceQube (IceRobotics Ltd., Edinburgh, UK), and Track a Cow (Animart Inc., Beaver Dam, WI). This objective was accomplished using 35 cows in 3 groups between January and June 2013 at the University of Kentucky Coldstream Dairy. We used a modified Ovsynch with G7G protocol to partially synchronize ovulation, ending after the last PGF2α injection (d 0) to allow estrus expression. Visual observation for standing estrus was conducted for four 30-min periods at 0330, 1000, 1430, and 2200h on d 2, 3, 4, and 5. Eighteen of the 35 cows stood to be mounted at least once during the observation period. These cows were used to compare differences between the 6h before and after the first standing event (estrus) and the 2wk preceding that period (nonestrus) for all technology parameters. Differences between estrus and nonestrus were observed for CowManager SensOor minutes feeding per hour, minutes of high ear activity per hour, and minutes ruminating per hour; twice daily DVM bolus reticulorumen temperature; HR Tag neck activity per 2h and minutes ruminating per 2h; IceQube lying bouts per hour, minutes lying per hour, and number of steps per hour; and Track a Cow leg activity per hour and minutes lying per hour. No difference between estrus and nonestrus was observed for CowManager SensOor ear surface temperature per hour. The second objective of this study was to explore the estrus detection potential of machine-learning techniques using automatically collected data. Three machine-learning techniques (random forest, linear discriminant analysis, and neural network) were applied to automatically collected parameter data from the 18 cows observed in standing estrus. Machine learning accuracy for all technologies ranged from 91.0 to 100.0%. When we compared visual observation with progesterone profiles of all 32 cows, we found 65.6% accuracy. Based on these results, machine-learning techniques have potential to be applied to automatically collected technology data for estrus detection.

Abstract
Background Hypertension is a common problem in older cats, most often associated with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Cross‐sectional studies have suggested that blood pressure in cats increases with age. Hypothesis/Objectives To determine whether blood pressure in cats increases with age and whether this occurs independently of the presence of CKD. To investigate risk factors for developing hypertension. Animals/Subjects Two hundred and sixty‐five cats with CKD and 133 healthy cats ≥9 years were retrospectively identified. Methods Four groups were created according to status at initial evaluation (CKD or healthy) and blood pressure at the last included visit (normotensive [NT] or developed hypertension [DH]): Healthy‐NT, Healthy‐DH, CKD‐NT and CKD‐DH. Systolic blood pressure (SBP) over time slopes were compared with 0 and between groups. Risk factors for the development of hypertension were investigated, and associations of biochemical and clinical variables with SBP were examined. Results Cats that were hypertensive at CKD diagnosis (n = 105) were not included in further analyses. Twenty‐seven cats with CKD and 9 healthy cats developed hypertension ≥3 months after diagnosis of CKD or their first visit. Systolic blood pressure significantly increased with age in all cats (P < .001). Healthy cats were at less risk than cats with CKD to become hypertensive (hazard ratio 0.2, P < .001), with creatinine being an independent risk factor for the development of hypertension. Conclusions and Clinical Importance The high prevalence of hypertension in azotemic cats in this study shows the importance of monitoring of SBP in elderly cats, and in particular in cats with CKD.

Abstract
Background Canine chronic enteropathies (CE) are believed to be caused by an aberrant immune response towards the intestinal microbiome. Administration of probiotics can alleviate colitis in people. In vitro effects of the probiotic Enterococcus faecium NCIMB 10415 E1707 (EF) previously have been evaluated using canine cells (e.g., whole blood, intestinal biopsies), but data on in vivo efficacy are lacking. Hypothesis/Objectives Administration of EF to dogs with food‐responsive CE will improve clinical outcome and decrease the intestinal inflammatory profile. Animals Dogs diagnosed with CE were prospectively recruited to receive a hydrolyzed elimination diet plus either a synbiotic product containing EF or placebo for 6 weeks. Both veterinary staff and owners were blinded to the treatment. Methods Clinical severity index (CCECAI), clinicopathological data and gene expression using intestinal biopsies (TLR2/4/5/9, IL‐17A, IL‐22, IL‐23p19, RORC, IL‐2, IL‐12p35, TNFα, IL‐4, IFNy, IL‐10, TGFβ, IL‐1β, IL‐18, NLRP3, casp‐1, TFF1, TFF3 and PPARy) before and after 6 weeks of treatment were analyzed using linear mixed modeling. Results Of the 45 cases recruited, 12 finished the clinical trial. Seven received the synbiotic and 5 the placebo product. There was no difference between groups or treatments regarding clinical efficacy, histology scores or expression of any of the investigated genes. Conclusions and clinical importance Standard dietary treatment induced rapid clinical response in all cases. Because the study was underpowered, it was not possible to determine whether or not EF had an additional effect within the time period of 6 weeks.

Abstract
The objectives of this pilot-scale study were to (1) evaluate the effectiveness of bioremediation of trichloroethylene (TCE)-contaminated groundwater with the supplement of slow polycolloid-releasing substrate (SPRS) (contained vegetable oil, cane molasses, surfactants) under reductive dechlorinating conditions, (2) apply gene analyses to confirm the existence of TCE-dechlorinating genes, and (3) apply the real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to evaluate the variations in TCE-dechlorinating bacteria (Dehalococcoides spp.). Approximately 350L of SPRS solution was supplied into an injection well (IW) and groundwater samples were collected and analyzed from IW and monitor wells periodically. Results show that the SPRS caused a rapid increase of the total organic carbon concentration (up to 5794mg/L), and reductive dechlorination of TCE was significantly enhanced. TCE dechlorination byproducts were observed and up to 99% of TCE removal (initial TCE concentration=1872μg/L) was observed after 50 days of operation. The population of Dehalococcoides spp. increased from 4.6×10(1) to 3.41×10(7)cells/L after 20 days of operation. DNA sequencing results show that there were 31 bacterial species verified, which might be related to TCE biodegradation. Results demonstrate that the microbial analysis and real-time PCR are useful tools to evaluate the effectiveness of TCE reductive dechlorination.

Abstract
The objective of this field-scale study was to evaluate the effectiveness of controlling trichloroethylene (TCE) plume migration using the polycolloid substrate (PS) biobarrier. The developed PS (containing soybean oil, lactate and surfactants) could release substrate to enhance the TCE dechlorination. In this study, a biobarrier comprising PS injection wells was installed. Injection wells were installed at 5-m intervals, and approximately 15 L of PS was injected into each well. Results show that TCE concentrations in the injection wells dropped from an average of 87 μg/L to below 1 μg/L after 35 days of PS injection. The total organic carbon concentrations in the injection wells increased from an average of 2.1-543 mg/L after 30 days of PS injection. The dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations and oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) values dropped from an average of 1.6 mg/L to below 0.1 mg/L and from 124 mv to -14 mv after 20 days of injection, respectively. The DO and ORP remained in anaerobic conditions during the remaining 100 days of the operational period. TCE degradation by-products were observed in groundwater samples during the operational period. This reveals that the addition of PS could effectively enhance the reductive dechlorinating of TCE.

Abstract
Silver crucian carp (Carassius auratus gibelio Bloch), as a gynogenetic fish, is a promising model for the study of the evolutionary genetics of vertebrates. We have developed 59 polymorphic trinucleotide and tetranucleotide markers for the silver crucian carp through the biotin capture method and radioactive-labeling hybridization. The number of alleles ranged from 2 to 12 in the population, and the average proportion of heterozygotes (including tri- and diallelic) at polymorphic loci was 76.8%. In addition, these loci were successfully applied to a close relative, the crucian carp (Carassius auratus), by cross-amplification, as shown by the range of alleles (2-19), observed heterozygosity (0.1765-0.9706), expected heterozygosity (0.2392-0.9421), and polymorphism information content (0.2186-0.9236).

Abstract
The aims of the study were to evaluate the relationships among milk urea nitrogen and nonreturn rates at the phenotypic scale, and to estimate genetic parameters among milk urea nitrogen, milk yield, and fertility traits in the early period of lactation. Milk yield, protein percentage, the interval from calving to first service, and 56- and 90-d nonreturn rates were available from 73,344 Holstein cows from 2,178 different herds located in a region in northwestern Germany. Generalized linear models with a logit link function were applied to assess the phenotypic relationships. Bivariate threshold-threshold, linear-threshold, and linear-linear models, fitted in a Bayesian framework, were used to estimate genetic correlations among traits. Milk yield, protein percentage, and milk urea nitrogen were means from test-day 1 (on average 20.8 d in milk) and test-day 2 (on average 53.1 d in milk) after calving. An increase in milk urea nitrogen was associated with decreasing 56-d nonreturn rates on the phenotypic scale. At fixed levels of milk urea nitrogen, greater values of protein percentage, indicating a surplus of energy in the feed, were positively associated with nonreturn rates. Heritabilities were 0.03 for 56- and 90-d nonreturn rates, 0.07 for interval from calving to first service, 0.13 for milk urea nitrogen, and 0.19 for milk yield. Service sire explained a negligible part (below 0.15%) of the total variance for nonreturn rates. Genetic correlations between the interval from calving to first service and nonreturn rates were close to zero. The genetic correlation between nonreturn rates was 0.94, suggesting that a change from nonreturn after 90 d to nonreturn after 56 d in the national genetic evaluation would not result in any loss of information. The genetic correlation between milk yield and nonreturn after 56 d was -0.31, and between milk yield and calving to first service was 0.14, both indicating an antagonistic relationship between production and reproduction. The genetic correlation between milk yield and milk urea nitrogen was 0.44, reflecting an energy deficiency in early lactation. The genetic correlations between milk urea nitrogen and nonreturn rates were too weak (-0.19 for 56-d nonreturn rate, and -0.23 for 90-d nonreturn rate) to justify the use of milk urea nitrogen as an additional trait in genetic selection for fertility, as demonstrated by selection index calculations.

Abstract
The uterine milk proteins (UTMP) are the major proteins secreted by the endometrium, primarily under the control of progesterone. Specific functions of UTMP are poorly understood, but may include protease inhibition, nutrition of the conceptus, growth control, and suppression of the maternal immune system. The uterine milk protein gene (UTMP) was chosen for this study because of its possible roles in health traits and results of previous studies on the association of the UTMP region with milk production and productive life in dairy cattle. Expression of UTMP was examined in 198 bovine tissues obtained from 10 fetuses and 17 cows. Transcripts of UTMP were found in all cotyledon tissues examined and to a lesser extent in ovary, pituitary, and spleen tissues obtained from fetuses. The UTMP gene was predominantly expressed in endometrium (17/17), ovary (15/16), and caruncle (12/12) tissues obtained from cows. The predominant expression of UTMP in reproductive tissues is consistent with an important role of this gene in reproductive success. To investigate the association between UTMP and production traits in cattle, we identified 2 synonymous single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) at positions 1179 (A/G) and 1296 (A/G) using the pooled DNA sequencing approach. The DNA was extracted from 28 Holstein sires and their 1,362 sons obtained from the Cooperative Dairy DNA Repository and from 913 cows from the University of Wisconsin resource population. Single nucleotide polymorphism 1296 was associated with a significant increase in productive life in both populations. This finding is similar to results previously obtained for the protease inhibitor gene, which is near UTMP and was also found to be associated with productive life in dairy cattle. Differential allelic expression of UTMP was observed in reproductive tissues obtained from 9 heterozygous individuals. The differential allelic expression observed in this study is consistent with other studies showing a correlation between allelic variation in gene expression and phenotypic variability.

Abstract
A data set of Holstein calving records from January 1996 to September 2004 comprising 4,103 herds with 2,304,278 calving events representing 1,164,233 cows and 96,069 twin births was extracted from Minnesota Dairy Herd Improvement Association archives to assess reported twinning trends and calf mortality across time. Overall, the reported twinning rate was 4.2%, and twinning increased with parity [1.2% for nulliparous vs. 5.8% for multiparous cows; odds ratio (OR) = 4.9], and with time (3.4% in 1996 to 4.8% in 2004), with a parity by time interaction. Independent of parity, the greatest twinning rate was observed when conception occurred from August to October compared with other seasons (OR = 1.2). Calf mortality was greater after twin births, with 28.2% of twin calving events reporting one or both calves as dead, compared with 7.2% for singleton births (OR = 6.5). Calf mortality for primiparous and multiparous cows was 5.0% after a single birth and 25.5% after twin births, whereas for nulliparous heifers, mortality was 10.4% for singletons and 38.0% for twins (OR = 3.4). Calf sex ratio (male, M; female, F) was 53.3% M and 46.7% F for singleton calves, and 30.1% MM, 43.6% MF, and 26.3% FF for twin calves. Although specific factors cannot be implicated, the increase in twinning across time suggests a concurrent change in one or more causative factors associated with twinning during the 9-yr study period.

Abstract
A genetic analysis of respiratory disease (RD) in Norwegian Red calves was conducted. This is the first genetic study of calf diseases based on data from the Norwegian health recording system, and RD was chosen because it is the most frequent disease in calves. Records on absence or presence of RD before 180 d of age for 250,212 calves (progeny of 728 Norwegian Red artificial insemination sires) were analyzed with a threshold model. A total of 0.7% of the calves had veterinary treatment of RD before 180 d of age. Heritability of RD in the underlying scale was 0.05, with a 95% credibility interval from 0.02 to 0.09. The "worst" sire had a predicted probability of RD that was more than twice as high as that of the "best" one (1.15 vs. 0.44%). Their 95% credibility intervals for predicted probability of RD, however, overlapped. With improved and more extensive recording of calf diseases, the precision in genetic evaluation of sires could increase considerably. The frequency of RD is very low in the Norwegian Red population at present, so there is not much scope for genetic improvement. However, this study indicates that reasonably precise genetic evaluation of sires for resistance to RD could be feasible.

Abstract
The objective was to extend a zero-inflated Poisson (ZIP) model to account for correlated genetic effects, and to use this model to analyze the number of clinical mastitis cases in Norwegian Red cows. The ZIP model is suitable for analysis of count data containing an excess of zeros relative to what is expected from Poisson sampling. A ZIP model was developed and compared with a corresponding Poisson model. The Poisson parameter followed a hierarchical structure, and a residual term accounting for overdispersion was included. In both models, the Poisson parameter was regressed 1) on the year, month, and age at first calving; 2) on the logarithm of the number of days elapsed from calving to the end of first lactation; and c) on herd and sire effects. Herd and sire effects were assigned normal prior distributions in a Bayesian analysis, corresponding to a random effects treatment in a frequentist analysis. An analysis of residuals favored the Poisson model when there were 2 or more cases of mastitis during first lactation, with very small differences between the ZIP and Poisson models at 0 and 1 cases. However, the residual assessment was not satisfactory for either of the models. The ZIP model, on the other hand, had a better predictive ability than the corresponding Poisson model. Posterior means of the sire, herd, and residual variances in the ZIP model (log scale) were 0.09, 0.37, and 0.36, respectively, highlighting the importance of herds as a source of variation in clinical mastitis. The correlation between sire rankings from the ZIP and Poisson models was 0.98. A weaker correlation would be expected in a population with more severe inflation at zero than the present one. The estimate of the perfect state probability p was 0.32, indicating that 32% of the animals would be in the perfect state, either because they are resistant or because they were not exposed to mastitis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Technetium-99m ethyl cysteinate dimer (Tc-99m ECD) brain single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) has been used to detect abnormal regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) in women with primary fibromyalgia (FM). The main aim of this study was to investigate the rCBF deficit in concomitant FM patients and compare it with primary FM. METHODS An observational study was designed to analyse the SPECT findings in 92 female patients recruited from January 2002 to January 2004. Differences in the rCBF hypoperfusive areas between 49 primary and 29 concomitant FM patients were assessed in different areas of the brain using the chi(2)-test for statistical significance. RESULTS Tc-99m ECD brain SPECT in 71 FM patients revealed heterogeneous rCBF in comparison to the homogeneous scan in 14 control patients. The most prominent rCBF hypoperfusive region in both primary and concomitant FM groups was the left temporoparietal area, followed by the thalamus, right temporoparietal, frontal, and basal ganglia areas. Differences in rCBF hypoperfusion in these areas for both FM groups were not significant (all p>0.5). CONCLUSIONS Reduced rCBF at cortical regions, in addition to previously reported areas at the thalamus and the subcortical nucleus, in FM patients was demonstrated in this study. The perfusion deficit areas were similar between primary and concomitant FM when the underlying disease activity was quiescent. The feasibility of using this neuroimaging study to differentiate FM from the primary disease, such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA)-associated depression and neuropsychiatric lupus, should be considered.

Abstract
Many studies have reported quantitative trait loci on chromosome 6 that affect milk production traits in dairy cattle. Osteopontin (OPN) and peroxisome proliferator activated receptor gamma coactivator 1 alpha (PPARGC1A) are located in the middle of chromosome 6 about 6 Mb apart, which is approximately 12 cM. The objective of this study was to investigate the association of OPN and PPARGC1A variants with milk production traits in 2 independent Holstein cattle populations: the University of Wisconsin (UW) daughter design and the Cooperative Dairy DNA Repository (CDDR) granddaughter design resource populations. For OPN, 891 cows from the UW resource population were genotyped for the C/T polymorphism reported previously in the CDDR population. Additive effects were significant for fat percentage, protein percentage, and fat yield in the UW resource population. These results are consistent with previous studies that have shown significant association of OPN variants with milk composition traits. The association between PPARC1A variants was investigated in UW and CDDR resource populations using 2 single nucleotide polymorphisms. For the UW resource population, additive effects were significantly increased for protein percentage and decreased for milk yield. Dominance effects were not significant for any of the examined traits. For the CDDR population, PPARGC1A was associated with a significant increase in milk protein percentage and in SCS. Thus, in UW and CDDR populations, PPARGC1A was associated with a significant increase in milk protein percentage in contrast to association results previously reported for the German Holstein population.

Abstract
The objectives of this study were to infer genetic parameters for stillbirth (SB) and calving difficulty (CD) and to evaluate phenotypic and genetic change for these traits in the Norwegian Red breed. Stillbirth is recorded as a binary trait and calving difficulty has 3 categories: 1) easy calving, 2) slight problems, and 3) difficult calving. The overall mean frequency of SB in Norwegian Red was 3% at first calving and 1.5% for second and later calvings; mean frequency of the category "difficult calving" was 2 to 3% for heifers and 1% for cows at second and later calvings. Mean stillbirth rate has remained unchanged from 1978 to 2004. The proportion of the category "difficult calving" has not changed over the years, but the "slight problems" category increased from 4 to 7% for heifers and from 2 to 3% for cows. A total of 528,475 first-calving records were analyzed with a Bayesian bivariate sire-maternal grandsire threshold liability model. Posterior means of direct and maternal heritabilities were 0.13 and 0.09 for CD, and 0.07 and 0.08 for SB, respectively. Strong genetic correlations were found between direct SB and direct CD (0.79), and between maternal SB and maternal CD (0.62), whereas all genetic correlations between direct and maternal effects within or between traits were close to zero. These positive correlations are favorable in the sense that selection for one of the traits would result in a favorable selection response for the second trait. No genetic correlations between direct and maternal effects imply that bulls should be evaluated both as sire of the calf (direct) and sire of the cow (maternal). No genetic change for SB was found, and a slight genetic improvement for CD was detected.

Abstract
Our objective was to estimate the effect of Mycobacterium paratuberculosis infection on milk, fat, and protein yield deviations, pregnancy rate, lactation somatic cell score, and projected total months in milk (productive life). A serum ELISA and fecal culture for M. paratuberculosis were performed on 4375 Holsteins in 232 DHIA herds throughout the US. Primarily first through third lactation cows (99% of total) were assayed for infection. Trait information (except productive life) was obtained for the lactation concurrent with disease tests. Productive life was total months in milk through a cow's life, which was projected if a cow was still milking. For most analyses, case definition for M. paratuberculosis infection was defined as either an ELISA S/P ratio>or=0.25 or a positive fecal culture for M. paratuberculosis or both. To determine if diagnostic test affected estimates, case definition was redefined to include only cows with ELISA S/P ratios>or=0.25 or only fecal culture-positive cows. Linear models were used to estimate effect of M. paratuberculosis infection on traits. M. paratuberculosis-infected cows (7.89% of cows) produced 303.9 kg less milk/lactation, 11.46 kg less fat/lactation, and 9.49 kg less protein/lactation (P<or=0.003). Infected cows had higher pregnancy rates (1.39%) (P=0.0385) and lower productive life (2.85 months) (P<or=0.0001). M. paratuberculosis infection did not affect somatic cell score. Effect of infection on milk and protein yields was larger in first lactation M. paratuberculosis-positive cows relative to cows that tested positive in later lactations. Fecal culture-positive cows had consistently larger effects on all traits than ELISA-positive cows. M. paratuberculosis infection, and not just clinical Johne's disease, decreases milk, fat, and protein yields, thus increasing the estimated cost of paratuberculosis to the US dairy industry.

Abstract
In dairy cattle, many studies have reported quantitative trait loci (QTL) on the centromeric end of chromosome 14 that affect milk production traits. One of the candidate genes in this QTL region - thyroglobulin (TG) - was previously found to be significantly associated with marbling in beef cattle. Thus, based on QTL studies in dairy cattle and because of possible effects of this gene on fat metabolism, we investigated the association of TG with milk yield and composition in Holstein dairy cattle. A total of 1279 bulls from the Cooperative Dairy DNA Repository Holstein population were genotyped for a single nucleotide polymorphism in TG used previously in beef cattle studies. Analysis of 29 sire families showed no significant association between TG variants and milk production traits. Within-sire family analysis suggests that TG is neither the responsible gene nor a genetic marker in association with milk production traits.

Abstract
Genetic variation in the number of 21-d opportunity periods required to achieve pregnancy after the voluntary waiting period (VWP) had passed was examined using 44,901 lactation records of 29,422 lactating Holstein cows on 61 large commercial dairy farms in the United States. Cows were allowed a maximum of 8 opportunity periods, and the cumulative percentages of cows that became pregnant by the end of the first, second, third, fourth, and fifth opportunity periods were 19, 29, 37, 43, and 47%, respectively. In addition, 38% of records were censored because of culling or failure to achieve pregnancy after 8 opportunity periods. Mean days open was 128 d for complete records, whereas mean days to last service was 148 d for censored records. An ordinal censored threshold model was developed, in which duration of the VWP was estimated simultaneously with prediction of sire breeding values. The posterior mean of intraherd-year heritability for the number of 21-d opportunity periods required to achieve pregnancy was 0.06, with a posterior standard deviation of 0.01. Posterior means for duration of the VWP ranged from 28 to 74 d postpartum among the 116 herd-parity classes represented in the study, whereas farmer-reported survey values for duration of the VWP ranged from 30 to 78 d postpartum. Sires' predicted transmitting abilities were computed, assuming an unknown VWP (i.e., estimated from the data), a VWP fixed at 60 d postpartum, or a VWP fixed at farmer survey values. Correlations among sire predicted transmitting abilities from different models were > or = 0.98, although some reranking occurred among top sires. In summary, the proposed model for genetic evaluation of female fertility can accommodate heterogeneity in duration of the VWP between herds, as well as heterogeneity that may arise within herds owing to management practices such as intentional delay of first insemination in high-producing cows or cows with poor body condition, and it can also accommodate censored records for nonpregnant cows.

Abstract
A series of pyrolysis oils and chars were prepared from agricultural by-product rice husk by the lab-scale fast pyrolysis system using induction heating. The effect of process parameters such as pyrolysis temperature, heating rate, holding time, nitrogen gas flow rate, condensation temperature and particle size on the pyrolysis product yields and their chemical compositions was examined. The maximum oil yield of over 40% was obtained at the proper pyrolysis conditions. The chemical characterization by elemental, calorific, spectroscopic and chromatographic studies showed that the pyrolysis oils derived from the fast pyrolysis of rice husk contained considerable amounts of carbonyl groups and/or oxygen content, resulting in low pH and low heating values.

Abstract
Bivariate models (censored linear-linear and censored threshold-linear) were used to estimate genetic parameters for production and fertility traits in the Spanish Holstein population. Records on 71,217 lactations from 41,515 cows were used: 30 and 36% of lactations were censored for days open (DO) and number of inseminations to conception (INS), respectively. Heritability estimates for production traits (milk, fat, protein) ranged between 0.18 and 0.25. Heritability of days to first service (DFS) and DO was 0.05; heritability of INS on the liability scale was 0.04. Genetic correlations between fertility traits were 0.41, 0.71, and 0.87 for DFS-INS, DO-INS, and DO-DFS, respectively. Days open had a larger genetic correlation (ranging from 0.63 to 0.76) with production traits than did DFS (0.47 to 0.59) or INS (0.16 to 0.23). Greater antagonism between production and DO may be due to voluntary management decisions for high-yielding cows, resulting in longer lactation lengths. Inseminations to conception appeared to be less correlated with milk production than were the other 2 female fertility traits. Including INS in a total merit index would be expected to increase genetic gain in terms of profit, but profit would decrease if either DO or DO and DFS were included in the index. Thus, INS is the trait to be preferred when selecting for female fertility. The genetic correlation between actual milk yield and 305-d standardized milk yield was 0.96 in the present study, suggesting that some reranking of sires could occur. Because the target of attaining a 12-mo calving interval, as implied by a 305-d standardized lactation length, is changing in the dairy industry, routine genetic evaluation of actual total lactation milk yield should be considered.

Abstract
Associations between clinical mastitis (CM) and nonreturn rate within 56 d after first insemination (NR56) were examined in Norwegian Red (NRF) cows. Records on absence or presence of CM within each of the intervals, -30 to 30, 31 to 150, and 151 to 300 d after first calving, and records on NR56 for 620,492 first-lactation daughters of 3,064 NRF sires were analyzed with a Bayesian multivariate threshold liability model. Point estimates of genetic correlations between NR56 and the 3 CM traits were between -0.05 and -0.02. Residual correlations were close to zero, and correlations between herd-5-yr effects on NR56 and CM in the 3 lactation intervals ranged from -0.15 to -0.17. It appears that CM and NR56 in first lactation are independent traits.

Abstract
A functional candidate gene approach was used to search for genes affecting milk production traits in Holstein dairy cattle. Signal transducer and activator of transcription 1 (STAT1) was chosen because of its involvement in the development of the mammary gland. Using the pooled genomic DNA sequencing approach, we identified a single nucleotide polymorphism. Genomic DNA was extracted from 1,292 sons obtained from the Cooperative Dairy DNA Repository and from 715 blood samples of daughters of 12 bulls obtained from the University of Wisconsin resource population. Daughter yield deviation data for the sons and yield deviation for the daughters were obtained for milk production traits from the USDA Animal Improvement Programs Laboratory. For the Repository population, allele C was associated with significant increases in milk fat and protein percentages. For the University of Wisconsin population, genotypes CC and CT were associated with significant increases in milk, fat, and protein yields. Results from this study are consistent with previous studies on the role of STAT1 in regulating the transcription of genes involved in milk protein synthesis and fat metabolism.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to infer genetic parameters and genetic change for number of clinical mastitis cases (NCM) and number of services to conception (STC) in first-lactation Norwegian Red (NRF) cows. Records on 620,492 daughters of 3,064 NRF sires, with first calving from 1980 through 2004, were analyzed with a bivariate threshold liability model that takes censoring into account. Posterior mean (SD) of heritability of liability was 0.08 (0.004) for NCM and 0.03 (0.002) for STC. The mean (SD) of the posterior distribution of the genetic correlation between the 2 traits was 0.21 (0.04). Posterior means of the correlation between herd-5-yr effects, and between residuals for NCM and STC were 0.17 and 0.05, respectively. To evaluate effects of taking censoring into account, the data were also analyzed with a bivariate ordered threshold model ignoring censoring. The genetic correlation between NCM and STC was lower than in the censored threshold model (0.09 vs. 0.21). Heritability of liability to NCM and STC from this model was also slightly lower, whereas the point estimates of herd-5-yr and residual correlations were 0.15, and -0.01, respectively. These results suggest that genetic (co)variance may be understated in models ignoring censoring. For comparison purposes, the data were analyzed with a bivariate linear sire model and standard REML-BLUP procedures. The correlation (rank correlation) between sire evaluations from the censored threshold model and sire predicted transmitting abilities from the linear model was 0.90 (0.90) for NCM and 0.87 (0.86) for STC. The evolution of average sire posterior means by birth year of daughters was used to assess genetic change, and results indicated genetic reduction (i.e., genetic improvement) of NCM and little or no genetic change for STC in the NRF population.

Abstract
The objectives of this study were to examine genetic associations between clinical mastitis and somatic cell score (SCS) in early first-lactation cows, to estimate genetic correlations between SCS of cows with and without clinical mastitis, and to compare genetic evaluations of sires based on SCS or clinical mastitis. Clinical mastitis records from 15 d before to 30 d after calving and first test-day SCS records (from 6 to 30 d after calving) from 499,878 first-lactation daughters of 2,043 sires were analyzed. Results from a bivariate linear sire model analysis of SCS in cows with and without clinical mastitis suggest that SCS is a heterogeneous trait. Heritability of SCS was 0.03 for mastitic cows and 0.08 for healthy cows, and the genetic correlation between the 2 traits was 0.78. The difference in rank between sire evaluations based on SCS of cows with and without clinical mastitis varied from -994 to 1,125, with mean 0. A bivariate analysis with a threshold-liability model for clinical mastitis and a linear Gaussian model for SCS indicated that heritability of liability to clinical mastitis is at least as large as that of SCS in early lactation. The mean (standard deviation) of the posterior distribution of heritability was 0.085 (0.006) for liability to clinical mastitis and 0.070 (0.003) for SCS. The posterior mean (standard deviation) of the genetic correlation between liability to clinical mastitis and SCS was 0.62 (0.03). A comparison of sire evaluations showed that genetic evaluation based on SCS was not able to identify the best sires for liability to clinical mastitis. The association between sire posterior means for liability to clinical mastitis and sire predicted transmitting ability for SCS was far from perfect.

Abstract
Oxidized low-density lipoprotein receptor (OLR1) is the major protein that binds, internalizes, and degrades oxidized low-density lipoprotein. The role of OLR1 in lipid metabolism and the results of previous whole-genome scan studies prompted the investigation of OLR1 as a candidate gene affecting milk composition traits. Direct cDNA and genomic sequencing of OLR1 revealed 2 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) in exon 4, 5 SNP in intron 4, and 1 in the 3' untranslated region (UTR). Four intragenic haplotypes comprising SNP positions 7,160, 7,161, 7,278, 7,381, 7,409, 7,438, 7,512, and 8,232 were inferred. Haplotype analysis showed that one of the haplotypes was associated with a significant increase in fat yield and fat percentage. Single SNP analysis showed that allele C of SNP 8,232 (in the 3'-UTR) had significant effects on fat yield and fat percentage, whereas SNP 7,160 and 7,161 (in exon 4) had no significant effects. Both single SNP and haplotype analyses indicate that SNP 8,232 in the 3'-UTR is associated with milk fat yield and percentage and it may be in linkage disequilibrium with the functional polymorphism. To provide support for the hypothesis that SNP 8,232 is responsible for OLR1 expression, OLR1 expression levels in individuals bearing different genotypes were assessed. It was found that OLR1 expression was reduced in genotype AA individuals compared with CC and AC individuals, suggesting that A at position 8,232 may be the nucleotide causing decreased OLR1 expression. The 3'-UTR polymorphism found in this study might control translation or stability of OLR1 mRNA.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to estimate genetic variability of Mycobacterium avium ssp. paratuberculosis infection in US Holsteins. Blood and fecal samples were collected primarily from daughters of 12 bulls in their second or third lactation. Routine disease testing of the sires documented that they were not infected. Herds without a "suspect" or positive ELISA (sample/positive ratio > or = 0.10) or positive fecal culture test were deleted from the data set. The remaining 4,603 cows from 238 herds and 46 sires were used to estimate heritability of M. paratuberculosis infection. Heritability was estimated with 3 Johne's disease diagnostic tests: 1) fecal culture alone, 2) serum antibody ELISA alone, and 3) both tests (combined) with a positive animal defined as all animals with either a positive fecal culture or ELISA test. Four statistical models were used to estimate heritability: 1) linear (ELISA), 2) threshold (fecal culture and combined), 3) ordered threshold (ELISA), and 4) bivariate linear-threshold (ELISA-fecal culture). A sire model and Bayesian approach using Markov chain Monte Carlo methods were used in each case. Heritability of infection based on the fecal culture test was 0.153 [posterior standard deviation (PSD) = 0.115]. Heritability with the ELISA was 0.159 (PSD = 0.090) with a linear model and 0.091 (PSD = 0.053) with an ordered threshold model. Heritability of the combined tests was 0.102 (PSD = 0.066). Heritability estimates of fecal culture and ELISA with the bivariate model varied slightly from estimates obtained with the univariate models (0.125 and 0.183, respectively), with a corresponding increase in precision (PSD = 0.096 and 0.082, respectively). This study demonstrates that exploitable genetic variation exists in dairy cattle for M. paratuberculosis infection susceptibility.

Abstract
The objectives were to infer heritability and genetic correlations between clinical mastitis (CM), milk fever (MF), ketosis (KET), and retained placenta (RP) within and between the first 3 lactations and to estimate genetic change over time for these traits. Records of 372,227 daughters of 2411 Norwegian Red (NRF) sires were analyzed with a 12-variate (4 diseases x 3 lactations) threshold model. Within each lactation, absence or presence of each of the 4 diseases was scored based on the cow's health recordings. Each disease was assumed to be a different trait in each of the 3 lactations. The model for liability had trait-specific effects of year-season of calving and age of calving (first lactation) or month-year of calving and calving interval (second and third lactations), herd-5-yr, sire of the cow, and a residual. Posterior means of heritability of liability in first, second, and third lactations were 0.08, 0.07, and 0.07, respectively, for CM; 0.09, 0.11, and 0.13 for MF; 0.14, 0.16, and 0.15 for KET, and 0.08 in all 3 lactations for RP. Posterior means of genetic correlations between liability to CM, MF, KET, and RP, within disease between lactations, ranged from 0.19 to 0.86, and were highest between KET in different lactations. Correlations involving first lactation MF were low and had higher standard deviations. Genetic correlations between diseases were low or moderate (from -0.10 to 0.40), within as well as between lactations; the largest estimates were for MF and KET, and the lowest involved MF or KET and RP. Positive genetic correlations between diseases suggest that some general disease resistance factor with a genetic component exists. Trends of average sire posterior means by birth-year of daughters were used to assess genetic change, and the results indicated genetic improvement of resistance to CM and KET and no genetic change for MF and RP in the NRF population.

Abstract
A bivariate censored threshold-linear model was used to study genetic parameters of number of services to conception (STC) and days open (DO) in first-lactation Norwegian Red (NRF) cows. Records of 1,454,916 NRF cows, with a first insemination from 1980 to 2004, were analyzed. It was assumed that every cow had at least a first insemination. The number of inseminations was recorded until a cow conceived or was culled, whichever occurred first. If a cow was culled before conception, it was considered censored at the number of services until culling was recorded. Twenty-one percent of cows were censored for both STC and DO. Using an univariate probit link function for STC, unobserved liabilities to STC and DO were modeled jointly as a linear function of age at first calving, month-year at first calving, herd-5-yr period, sire of cow and residual effects. Heritability of liability to STC and DO was 4% for each trait. The genetic and residual correlations between STC and DO were 0.77 and 0.68, respectively. There has been little or no genetic change for DO, whereas STC had favorable genetic and phenotypic trends.

Abstract
Producer-recorded clinical mastitis data from 77,791 cows in 418 herds were used to determine the potential for genetic improvement of mastitis resistance using data from on-farm management software programs. The following threshold sire models were applied: 1) a single-trait lactation model, where mastitis was recorded as 0 or 1 in first lactation only; 2) a 3-trait lactation model, where mastitis was recorded as 0 or 1 in each of the first 3 lactations, and 3) a 12-trait, lactation-segment model, where mastitis was recorded as 0 or 1 in each of 4 segments (0 to 50, 51 to 155, 156 to 260, and 261 to 365 d postpartum) in each of the first 3 lactations. Lactation incidence rates were 0.16, 0.20, and 0.24 in first, second, and third lactation, respectively, and incidence rates within various segments of these lactations ranged from 0.036 in late first lactation to 0.093 in early third lactation. Estimated heritability of liability to clinical mastitis ranged from 0.07 to 0.15, depending on the model and stage of lactation. Heritability estimates were higher in first lactation than in subsequent lactations, but estimates were generally similar for different segments of the same lactation. Genetic correlations between lactations from the 3-trait model ranged from 0.42 to 0.49, while correlations between segments within lactation from the 12-trait model ranged from 0.26 to 0.64. Based on the results presented herein, it appears that at least 2 segments are needed per lactation, because mastitis in early lactation is lowly correlated with mastitis in mid or late lactation. Predicted transmitting abilities of sires ranged from 0.77 to 0.89 for probability of no mastitis during the first lactation and from 0.36 to 0.59 for probability of no mastitis during the first 3 lactations. Overall, this study shows that farmer-recorded clinical mastitis data can make a valuable contribution to genetic selection programs, but additional systems for gathering and storing this information must be developed, and more extensive data recording in progeny test herds should be encouraged.

Abstract
Osteopontin (OPN) is a highly phosphorylated glycoprotein whose gene has been cloned and sequenced in different species. Several whole genome scans have identified quantitative trait loci (QTL) affecting milk production traits on bovine chromosome 6 close to the osteopontin gene (OPN) location. The presence of OPN in milk and its elevated expression in mammary gland epithelial cells together with previous QTL studies have prompted us to investigate the effects of OPN variants on milk production traits in the Holstein dairy cattle population. A single nucleotide polymorphism in intron 4 (C/T) was detected and primers were designed to amplify genomic DNA from 1362 bulls obtained from Cooperative Dairy DNA Repository and from 214 cows from the University of Wisconsin herd. For the Repository population, the C allele was associated with an increase in milk protein percentage and milk fat percentage. Correlation between milk protein percentage and milk fat percentage was about 0.57. For the University of Wisconsin herd, the estimates of the effects of allele C were in the same direction as for the Repository population, although these estimates did not reach statistical significance. Our results are consistent with other studies that showed a significant association of the microsatellite markers in the region of OPN with milk protein percentage and other correlated traits.

Abstract
Three methodologies that accommodate censoring or time-dependent covariates were used to estimate variance components for number of inseminations to conception. Data included 80,071 lactation records and 143,927 artificial inseminations in 47,509 Spanish Holstein cows. Up to 4 inseminations to conception, along with their respective censoring information, were analyzed. An ordinal-censored threshold model (CTM), a sequential threshold model (STM), and a grouped survival analysis via a discrete proportional hazards model (DPH) were implemented. Sire variance estimates on the liability scale were 0.016 and 0.010 for CTM and STM, respectively, and 0.012 for DPH on the logarithmic scale. Heritability estimates on the liability scale were 0.050 and 0.038 with CTM and STM, respectively. All models led to similar rankings of sires, and the strong correlations (0.97 to 0.98) between methodologies suggested robustness in ranking of sires of cows. Service sire variance estimates were 0.021 for both CTM and STM; DPH led to an approximate service sire variance of 0.020. Rankings for service sires between methodologies ranged from 0.76 to 0.90. These lower values are most likely due to differences in the treatment of time-dependent covariates. The STM had greater predictive ability of daughter fertility at first insemination than the other methodologies. However, the CTM predicted daughter fertility more accurately in subsequent inseminations. The DPH and STM had a similar predictive ability of daughter fertility in second and subsequent inseminations.

Abstract
The adsorption of basic dye (i.e., ethyl violet or basic violet 4) from aqueous solution onto the regenerated spent bleaching earth (RSBE) was carried out by varying the process parameters such as initial concentration, pH, and temperature. As analytical comparisons, activated bleaching earth (ABE) was also used as adsorbent for the adsorption of the basic dye at various initial concentrations. The experimental results showed that the adsorption process can be well described with the pseudo-second-order reaction model and less fitted by the intra-particle diffusion model. The kinetic parameters of both models obtained in the present work are in line with pore properties of the two adsorbents. According to the equilibrium adsorption capacity from the fitting of pseudo-second-order reaction model, it was further found that the both models of Langmuir and Freundlich appeared to fit well the isotherm data. In addition, the thermodynamic parameters were evaluated based on the pseudo-second-order rate constants, showing that the adsorption of ethyl violet onto the RSBE is endothermic in nature.

Abstract
A bivariate threshold-linear (TL) and a bivariate linear-linear (LL) model were assessed for the genetic analysis of 56-d nonreturn (NR56) and interval from calving to first insemination (CFI) in first-lactation Norwegian Red (former Norwegian Dairy Cattle) (NRF). Three different datasets were used to infer genetic parameters and to predict transmitting abilities for NRF sires. Mean progeny group sizes were 147.8, 102.7, and 56.5 daughters, and the corresponding number of sires were 746, 743, and 742 in the 3 datasets. Otherwise, the structures of the 3 datasets were similar. When the TL model was used, heritability of liability to NR56 was 2.8% in the 2 larger datasets and 3.8% in the smallest dataset. In the LL model, the heritability of NR56 in the largest dataset and in the 2 smaller datasets was 1.2 and 0.9%, respectively. For CFI, the heritability was similar in TL and LL models, ranging from 2.4 to 2.7%. The small heritability of the 2 reproductive traits implies that most of the variation is environmental and that large progeny groups are required to get accurate sire PTA. The point estimates of the genetic correlation between NR56 and CFI were near zero in both models. The 2 bivariate models were compared in terms of predictive ability using logistic regression and a chi2 statistic based on differences between observed and predicted outcomes for NR56 in a separate dataset. Comparison was also with respect to ranking of sires and correlations between sire posterior means (TL model) and PTA (LL model). We found very small differences in ability to predict NR56 between the 2 bivariate models, regardless of the dataset used. Correlations between sire posterior means (TL) and sire PTA (LL) and rank correlations between sire evaluations were all >0.98 in the 3 datasets. At present, the LL model is preferred for sire evaluations of NR56 and CFI in NRF. This is because the LL model is less computationally demanding and more robust with respect to the structure of the data than TL.

Abstract
The objectives of this study were to calculate genetic correlations between health traits that were recorded in on-farm herd management software programs and to assess relationships between these traits and other traits that are routinely evaluated in US dairy sires. Data consisted of 272,576 lactation incidence records for displaced abomasum (DA), ketosis (KET), mastitis (MAST), lameness (LAME), cystic ovaries (CYST), and metritis (MET) from 161,622 cows in 646 herds. These data were collected between January 1, 2001 and December 31, 2003 in herds using the Dairy Comp 305, DHI-Plus, or PCDART herd management software programs. Binary incidence data for all disorders were analyzed simultaneously using a multiple-trait threshold sire model that included random sire and herd-year-season of calving effects. Although data from multiple lactations were available for some animals, our genetic analysis included only first parity records due to concerns about selection bias and improper modeling of the covariance structure. Heritability estimates for the presence or absence of each disorder during first lactation were 0.14 for DA, 0.06 for KET, 0.09 for MAST, 0.03 for LAME, 0.04 for CYST, and 0.06 for MET. Estimated genetic correlations were 0.45 between DA and KET, 0.42 between KET and CYST, 0.20 between MAST and LAME, 0.19 between KET and LAME, 0.17 between DA and CYST, 0.17 between KET and LAME, 0.17 between KET and MET, and 0.16 between LAME and CYST. All other correlations were negligible. Correlations between predicted transmitting abilities for the aforementioned health traits and existing production, type, and fitness traits were low, though it must be noted that these estimates may have been biased by low reliability of the health trait evaluations. Based on results of this study, it appears that genetic selection for health disorders recorded in on-farm software programs can be effective. These traits can be incorporated into selection indices directly, or they can be combined into composite traits, such as "reproductive disorders", "metabolic disorders", or "early lactation disorders".
