Abstract
Introduction: The efficacy of selenium supplementation was elusive for polycystic ovary syndrome. This meta-analysis aimed to explore the efficacy of selenium supplementation for polycystic ovary syndrome. Methods: PubMed, EMbase, Web of science, EBSCO, Cochrane library database, CNKI, Chongqing VIP database and Wanfang databases have been searched through July 2022 and we included randomized controlled trials (RCTs) reporting the effect of selenium supplementation versus placebo in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome. Results: Five RCTs were included in the meta-analysis. Compared with placebo group for polycystic ovary syndrome, selenium supplementation was associated with significantly reduced total testosterone (SMD=-0.42; 95% CI=-0.78 to -0.06; p = 0.02) and cholesterol (SMD=-0.71; 95% CI=-1.41 to -0.02; p = 0.04), but revealed no remarkable influence on SHBG (SMD=-0.52; 95% CI=-1.29 to 0.25; p = 0.19), triglyceride (SMD=-1.45; 95% CI=-3.62 to 0.73; p = 0.19), LDL (SMD=-0.17; 95% CI=-0.72 to 0.37; p = 0.53), FPG (SMD=-0.95; 95% CI=-3.72 to 1.82; p = 0.50) or HOMA-IR (SMD=-0.51; 95% CI=-3.79 to 2.77; p = 0.76). Conclusions: Selenium supplementation may be able to improve the metabolic response for polycystic ovary syndrome, and this finding should be interpreted with caution.

Abstract
Purpose: To provide an overview and critical analysis of the literature related to the circulating androgen levels of daughters of PCOS mothers during prepubertal and pubertal stage who have not yet been diagnosed with PCOS or precocious puberty. Methods: We critically considered and meta-analyzed observational studies comparing androgens concentration in daughters of PCOS mothers compared to daughters of mothers without PCOS. A literature search was conducted in MEDLINE, Scopus and other sources from 01/09/2021 until 01/12/2021. The study followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA). The primary outcome included total testosterone levels whereas the secondary outcomes included 17a-hydroxyprogesterone (17-OHP), androstenedione (Δ4Α) and Sex Hormone Binding Globulin (SHBG) levels respectively. Results: Our search yielded 1073 studies, 9 of which were included in our analysis. The results are presented differently according to pubertal stage. Pubertal daughters of PCOS mothers exhibited significantly higher total testosterone (pooled mean difference 14.95 (95%CI: 6.98 to 22.93), higher 17-OHP (pooled mean difference 0.11 (95%CI: 0.02 to 0.20) and lower SHBG levels (pooled mean difference -10.48 (95%CI: -16.46 to -4.61). Instead, prepubertal daughters of PCOS mothers presented greater SHBG levels (pooled mean difference 7.79 (95%CI: 0.03 to 15.54) compared to controls. No difference was found in Δ4Α levels in both groups. Conclusion: The onset of puberty is a critical point in the development of the disease and an early intervention may be imperative.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous studies reported that testosterone and DNA methylation of suppressor of cytokine signaling-3 (SOCS3) were associated with type 2 diabetes (T2D). Testosterone affects SOCS3 gene expression. Therefore, we aimed to investigate how the SOCS3 methylation mediates the relationship between testosterone and T2D among Chinese rural adults. METHODS A case-control study comprised 365 T2D patients and 651 controls was conducted. Liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry and MethylTarget were used to determine the levels of serum testosterone and DNA methylation of SOCS3 gene, respectively. The odds ratio (OR) of testosterone or SOCS3 methylation for T2D was calculated using logistic regression models, and β value of testosterone for SOCS3 methylation was evaluated by linear regression models. Furthermore, through mediation analysis the mediating effect of SOCS3 methylation on the association of testosterone with T2D was estimated. RESULTS After adjusting for multiple variables, the protective effect of testosterone on T2D was found in men (OR = 0.61, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.47-0.80), and the methylation of Chr17:76356190 or Chr17:76356199 was negatively related to T2D in both men and women. Moreover, testosterone was positively associated with Chr17:76356190 methylation in men and Chr17:76356199 methylation in women (both P < .05). The mediation analysis showed that the Chr17:76356190 methylation partly mediated effect of testosterone on T2D in men was approximately 8.2%. CONCLUSIONS High levels of serum testosterone in men and Chr17:76356190 and Chr17:76356199 (SOCS3) methylation were related to a lower prevalent T2D. In addition, Chr17:76356190 methylation partially mediated the effect of testosterone on T2D in Chinese rural men.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We have previously shown that serum testosterone was associated with impaired fasting glucose (IFG) and type 2 diabetes (T2D). Testosterone can be acting through binding the androgen receptor (AR). Therefore, we aimed to explore the independent associations of AR DNA methylation (ARm) with IFG and T2D and the moderation effects of serum testosterone on the associations. METHODS A case-control study with 1065 participants including 461 men and 604 women was performed. ARm in peripheral blood sample and serum testosterone were measured using pyrosequeuncing and liquid chromatography-tandem mass, respectively. Multivariable logistic regression was performed to estimate the associations of ARm (including 2 cytosine-phosphoguanine [CpG] islands and average methylation levels) with different glucose status. Serum testosterone was used as a moderator to estimate the moderation effect. RESULTS After multivariate adjustment, CpG 1, 2 and CpG average methylation were all significantly associated with IFG (CpG 1: Odds ratio (OR) = 4.80, 95% confidence interval (CI): 2.24-10.27; CpG 2: OR = 4.35, 95% CI: 2.50-7.58; CpG average: OR = 11.73, 95% CI: 5.36-25.67) in women. In addition, testosterone played negative moderation effects in above associations. Moreover, no significant independent associations of methylation levels with T2D was observed both in men and women. CONCLUSION Our findings demonstrate that ARm was positively associated with IFG in women and the associations would be weakened by testosterone. The individuals experiencing low testosterone and ARm levels reported a lower state of IFG than those who experienced high levels of testosterone and ARm in women.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sex hormones may play important roles in sex-specific biological aging. In the study, we specifically examined associations between circulating sex hormone concentrations and leukocyte telomere length (TL). METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted among 1124 Black, 444 Hispanic, and 289 Asian/Pacific Islander women in the Women's Health Initiative Observational Cohort. Estradiol and testosterone concentrations were measured using electrochemiluminescence immunoassays; TL was measured using quantitative polymerase chain reaction. RESULTS Women in the study were aged 50-79 years. Estradiol concentrations were not significantly associated with TL in this sample. The associations between total and free testosterone and TL differed by race/ethnicity (Pinteraction = 0.03 and 0.05 for total and free testosterone, respectively). Total and free testosterone concentrations were not associated with TL in Black and Hispanic women, whereas in Asian/Pacific Islander women their concentrations were inversely associated with TL (Ptrend = 0.003 for both). These associations appeared robust in multiple subgroup analyses and multivariable models adjusted for potential confounding factors. In Asian/Pacific Islander women, a doubling of serum free and total testosterone concentrations was associated with a 202-bp shorter TL (95% confidence interval [CI] 51-353 bp) and 203-bp shorter TL (95% CI 50-355 bp), respectively. CONCLUSIONS Serum estradiol concentrations were not associated with leukocyte TL in this large sample of postmenopausal women. Total and free testosterone concentrations were inversely associated with TL in Asian/Pacific Islander women, but not in Black and Hispanic women, although future studies to replicate our observations are warranted particularly to address potential ethnicity-specific relationships.

Abstract
Why are boys at risk? To address this question, I use the perspective of regulation theory to offer a model of the deeper psychoneurobiological mechanisms that underlie the vulnerability of the developing male. The central thesis of this work dictates that significant gender differences are seen between male and female social and emotional functions in the earliest stages of development, and that these result from not only differences in sex hormones and social experiences but also in rates of male and female brain maturation, specifically in the early developing right brain. I present interdisciplinary research which indicates that the stress-regulating circuits of the male brain mature more slowly than those of the female in the prenatal, perinatal, and postnatal critical periods, and that this differential structural maturation is reflected in normal gender differences in right-brain attachment functions. Due to this maturational delay, developing males also are more vulnerable over a longer period of time to stressors in the social environment (attachment trauma) and toxins in the physical environment (endocrine disruptors) that negatively impact right-brain development. In terms of differences in gender-related psychopathology, I describe the early developmental neuroendocrinological and neurobiological mechanisms that are involved in the increased vulnerability of males to autism, early onset schizophrenia, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and conduct disorders as well as the epigenetic mechanisms that can account for the recent widespread increase of these disorders in U.S. culture. I also offer a clinical formulation of early assessments of boys at risk, discuss the impact of early childcare on male psychopathogenesis, and end with a neurobiological model of optimal adult male socioemotional functions.
