Relationship amongst Noise Sensitivity, Burnout and Psychological Resilience in Community Workers

Background

The mental health status of community workers shows the characteristics of low job satisfaction, low self-efficacy and psychological resilience, and a high sense of burnout. This research aims to explore the relationship between noise sensitivity, burnout, and psychological resilience in community workers.

Methods and Material

Convenience sampling was adopted to select 169 community workers from five communities as research objects for an anonymous questionnaire survey. A general questionnaire was used to collect the general information of the respondents. Noise sensitivity, burnout and psychological resilience scales were adopted to analyse the correlation amongst noise sensitivity, burnout and psychological resilience in community workers. Univariate and multivariate logistics regression analyses were used to analyse the influencing factors of job burnout and psychological resilience in community workers.

Results

A total of 169 questionnaires were distributed, and after excluding 6 unqualified questionnaires, 163 valid questionnaires (96.45%) were collected. The scores on the noise sensitivity, burnout and psychological resilience scales were 63.80 ± 9.69, 78.57 ± 10.12 and 54.18 ± 8.77 points, respectively. The results of the correlation analysis showed that in community workers, the noise sensitivity score was negatively correlated with the psychological resilience score (P < 0.001) and positively correlated with the burnout score (P < 0.001). The burnout and psychological resilience scores of community workers showed statistical differences with different ages, working years and disposable monthly family income (P < 0.001). Multiple linear regression results revealed that noise sensitivity, age, working years and disposable monthly family income had an effect on burnout and psychological resilience scores (P < 0.001).

Conclusion

In community workers, noise sensitivity is positively correlated with burnout and negatively correlated with psychological resilience. This study provides a certain research basis for conducting relevant psychological research and interventions.

Empathy and Post-Traumatic Growth among Chinese Community Workers during the COVID-19 Pandemic: Roles of Self-Disclosure and Social Support

Given the prolonged nature of the COVID-19 pandemic and its long-term psychological impacts, this study aimed to explore how empathy leads to post-traumatic growth (PTG) among Chinese community workers. Guided by the revised PTG model, this study identified the relation between empathy and PTG using a multiple mediation model that included self-disclosure and social support as hypothesized mediators. This study utilized data from 414 Chinese adults aged 20 years or older who completed an online survey during the pandemic. Self-disclosure and social support were measured as mediating variables. The study variables were positively correlated with PTG. Empathy was positively correlated with self-disclosure and social support. After controlling for demographic covariates, the results indicated that self-disclosure and social support mediated the link between empathy and PTG in both parallel and sequential fashion. Empathy, self-disclosure, and social support played important roles in the growth of Chinese community workers. The present findings have been useful in increasing our understanding, policy programs, and interventions by governments or regional bodies to ameliorate community workers' PTG.

Understanding Cervical Cancer Screening Barriers among Migrant Women: A Qualitative Study with Healthcare and Community Workers in Portugal

Cervical cancer screening (CCS) has been proven to reducing mortality of cervical cancer; yet migrant women show a lower participation in screening compared to non-migrants. This study explores the perspectives of healthcare workers and community workers on the factors influencing the CCS participation of migrant women living in Portugal. A qualitative study with online focus groups was conducted. Healthcare workers experienced in CCS and community workers working with migrant communities were purposively sampled. A semi-structured guide was used covering the participation of migrant women in CCS, barriers, and strategies to overcome them. Data were analyzed using content analysis. Participants considered that migrant women have low participation in CCS related to insufficient knowledge, low risk perception, and lack of interest on preventive care. Other barriers such as difficulties in accessing the healthcare services, relationship with healthcare workers, language, and cultural differences were highlighted. Promoting continuity of care, disseminating culturally tailored information, and use of self-sampling methods were suggested to improve participation in CCS. Inequalities in access to CCS among migrant women are mostly caused by information gaps and healthcare system-related barriers. Building a migrant-friendly healthcare system that creates opportunities for healthcare workers to establish relationships with their patients and delivering culturally and linguistically adapted information may contribute to overcoming those barriers and increasing the participation of migrant women in screening.

Recovery, non-profit organisations and mental health services: 'Hit and miss' or 'dump and run'?

BACKGROUND

The evolution of Recovery-oriented mental health services in Western nations across the globe has given rise to a growth in community-based psychosocial support services, to assist in meeting the diverse needs of consumers. This article reports findings of research that explored the perceptions of community workers who are employed by non-profit organisations and deliver psychosocial support services to support delivery of Recovery-oriented clinical mental health services.

AIMS

The focus of the research reported in this article includes the benefits and challenges encountered by the community workers when working with clinicians.

METHOD

The research was undertaken as part of a single-case embedded study, which evaluated the implementation of Recovery-oriented approaches to the delivery of clinical mental health services in a major urban centre located in south-eastern Australia.

RESULTS

Generally, community workers employed by the non-profit organisations perceived the implementation of Recovery-oriented clinical mental health services to be a positive step forward for consumers. Challenges to the delivery of Recovery-oriented services included issues arising from the many different understandings of what it means to experience mental health Recovery, the quality of communication between the community workers and clinicians and the clinicians' lack of understanding of the role of non-profit organisations and community workers.

CONCLUSION

The article concludes with recommendations to address the challenges involved, with a view to improving the partnerships between community workers and clinicians, and the Recovery journey of people with serious mental illness.

Community-based blood pressure measurement by non-health workers using electronic devices: a validation study

Introduction

Population monitoring and screening of blood pressure is an important part of any population health strategy. Qualified health workers are expensive and often unavailable for screening. Non-health workers with electronic blood pressure monitors are increasingly used in community-based research. This approach is unvalidated. In a poor, urban community we compared blood pressure measurements taken by non-health workers using electronic devices against qualified health workers using mercury sphygmomanometers.

Method

Fifty-six adult volunteers participated in the research. Data were collected by five qualified health workers, and six non-health workers. Participants were randomly allocated to have their blood pressure measured on four consecutive occasions by alternating a qualified health worker with a non-health worker. Descriptive statistics and graphs, and mixed effects linear models to account for the repeated measurement were used in the analysis.

Results

Blood pressure readings by non-health workers were more reliable than those taken by qualified health workers. There was no significant difference between the readings taken by qualified health workers and those taken by non-health workers for systolic blood pressure. Non-health workers were, on average, 5–7 mmHg lower in their measures of blood pressure than the qualified health workers (95%HPD: −2.9 to −10.0) for diastolic blood pressure.

Conclusion

The results provide empirical evidence that supports the practice of non-health workers using electronic devices for BP measurement in community-based research and screening. Non-health workers recorded blood pressures that differed from qualified health workers by no more than 10 mmHg. The approach is promising, but more research is needed to establish the generalisability of the results.

Influence network effectiveness in promoting couples' HIV voluntary counseling and testing in Kigali, Rwanda

OBJECTIVE

To identify predictors of promotion of couples' HIV voluntary counseling and testing (CVCT) in Kigali, Rwanda.

DESIGN

Analysis of CVCT promotional agent [influential network leaders (INLs), influential network agents (INAs)], and couple/invitation-level predictors of CVCT uptake.

METHODS

Number of invitations and couples tested were evaluated by INL, INA, and couple/contextual factors. Multivariable logistic regression accounting for two-level clustering analyzed factors predictive of couples' testing.

RESULTS

Twenty-six INLs recruited and mentored 118 INAs who delivered 24 991 invitations. 4513 couples sought CVCT services after invitation. INAs distributed an average of 212 invitations resulting in an average of 38 couples tested/agent. Characteristics predictive of CVCT in multivariate analyses included the invitee and INA being socially acquainted [adjusted odds ratio (aOR) = 1.4; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.2-1.6]; invitations delivered after public endorsement (aOR = 1.3; 95% CI 1.1-1.5); and presence of a mobile testing unit (aOR = 1.4; 95% CI 1.0-2.0). In stratified analyses, predictors significant among cohabiting couples included invitation delivery to the couple (aOR = 1.2; 95% CI 1.0-1.4) and in the home (aOR = 1.3; 95% CI 1.1-1.4), whereas among noncohabiting couples, predictors included invitations given by unemployed INAs (aOR = 1.7; 95% CI 1.1-2.7). Cohabiting couples with older men were more likely to test, whereas younger age was associated with testing among men in noncohabiting unions.

CONCLUSIONS

Invitations distributed by influential people were successful in prompting couples to seek joint HIV testing, particularly if the invitation was given in the home to someone known to the INA and accompanied by a public endorsement of CVCT. Mobile units also increased the number of couples tested. Country-specific strategies to promote CVCT programs are needed to reduce HIV transmission among those at highest risk for HIV in sub-Saharan Africa.
