Differences in Blood Glutathione Levels of Patients with Advanced or Localized Carcinoma

Aims and background

The increased level of blood glutathione (GSH) is an important biochemical feature in animal epithelial tumor. The aim of this study was to investigate the blood GSH concentrations in well characterized cancer patients and healthy volunteers.

Methods

Two different groups of carcinoma cases were used. The first group consisted of 15 blood samples drawn from disseminated gastric adenocarcinoma patients, and the second group comprised 15 samples obtained from localized or locally advanced skin carcinoma cases without lymph node metastasis. GSH and hemoglobin concentrations were measured by using the method of Beutler et al.

Results

The mean blood GSH in patients who had advanced malignant disease was 129.13 ± 7.49 mg/dl and in patients who had localized cancer was 96.24 ± 3.90 mg/dl. These results indicate that the blood GSH level is 31% higher in localized carcinoma cases and 78% higher in metastatic disease than those of controls. Blood GSH concentrations were expressed on the basis of blood volume and also on hemoglobin content. Similar results were calculated with either mode of expression.

Conclusion

By comparing the two groups of patients, we found that higher blood GSH concentration was correlated with metastatic growth.

Liver Glutathione Contents in Patients with Gastric Adenocarinomas

Many antineoplastic agents alter the reduced glutathione (GSH) status of liver and tumor tissue by inhibiting cellular GSH-linked enzymes. Thus, intracellular GSH plays an important role in a wide variety of antineoplastic interventions regarding therapeutic efficacy and toxicity. Mean GSH values were 0.791 ± 0.072 mg/m wet weight (ww) and 0.719 ± 0.047 mg/g ww in gastric cancer tissue and nontumorous glandular mucosa, respectively. Whereas, the average GSH level of normal gastric mucosa was 1.709 ± 0.135 mg/g, the mean GSH level of normal liver biopsies was 2.378 ± 0.260 mg/g. The GSH values of normal liver tissue were higher than the hepatocellular GSH concentrations of patients with gastric adenocarcinoma and of another group of tumor-bearing patients who had received chemotherapy preoperatively. These results suggest that the GSH levels of tumor and liver may influence the efficacy and/or toxicity of chemotherapeutic agents.

International Nosocomial Infection Control Consortium report, data summary of 50 countries for 2010-2015: Device-associated module

BACKGROUND

We report the results of International Nosocomial Infection Control Consortium (INICC) surveillance study from January 2010-December 2015 in 703 intensive care units (ICUs) in Latin America, Europe, Eastern Mediterranean, Southeast Asia, and Western Pacific.

METHODS

During the 6-year study period, using Centers for Disease Control and Prevention National Healthcare Safety Network (CDC-NHSN) definitions for device-associated health care-associated infection (DA-HAI), we collected prospective data from 861,284 patients hospitalized in INICC hospital ICUs for an aggregate of 3,506,562 days.

RESULTS

Although device use in INICC ICUs was similar to that reported from CDC-NHSN ICUs, DA-HAI rates were higher in the INICC ICUs: in the INICC medical-surgical ICUs, the pooled rate of central line-associated bloodstream infection, 4.1 per 1,000 central line-days, was nearly 5-fold higher than the 0.8 per 1,000 central line-days reported from comparable US ICUs, the overall rate of ventilator-associated pneumonia was also higher, 13.1 versus 0.9 per 1,000 ventilator-days, as was the rate of catheter-associated urinary tract infection, 5.07 versus 1.7 per 1,000 catheter-days. From blood cultures samples, frequencies of resistance of Pseudomonas isolates to amikacin (29.87% vs 10%) and to imipenem (44.3% vs 26.1%), and of Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates to ceftazidime (73.2% vs 28.8%) and to imipenem (43.27% vs 12.8%) were also higher in the INICC ICUs compared with CDC-NHSN ICUs.

CONCLUSIONS

Although DA-HAIs in INICC ICU patients continue to be higher than the rates reported in CDC-NSHN ICUs representing the developed world, we have observed a significant trend toward the reduction of DA-HAI rates in INICC ICUs as shown in each international report. It is INICC's main goal to continue facilitating education, training, and basic and cost-effective tools and resources, such as standardized forms and an online platform, to tackle this problem effectively and systematically.

Healthcare-associated Gram-negative bloodstream infections: antibiotic resistance and predictors of mortality

This article describes the prevalence of antibiotic resistance and predictors of mortality for healthcare-associated (HA) Gram-negative bloodstream infections (GN-BSI). In total, 831 cases of HA GN-BSI from 17 intensive care units in different centres in Turkey were included; the all-cause mortality rate was 44%. Carbapenem resistance in Klebsiella pneumoniae was 38%, and the colistin resistance rate was 6%. Multi-variate analysis showed that age >70 years [odds ratio (OR) 2, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.22-3.51], central venous catheter use (OR 2.1, 95% CI 1.09-4.07), ventilator-associated pneumonia (OR 1.9, 95% CI 1.1-3.16), carbapenem resistance (OR 1.8, 95% CI 1.11-2.95) and APACHE II score (OR 1.1, 95% CI 1.07-1.13) were significantly associated with mortality.

Validation of a severity grading score (SGS) system for predicting the course of disease and mortality in patients with Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF)

We aimed to validate a severity grading score (SGS) system for predicting the course of disease and fatality in Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF). This SGS was established using several variables that were assumed to be associated with mortality and had clinical importance. We included patients diagnosed with CCHF from different centers. Patients who had symptoms of CCHF for <5 days were included. The patients were grouped into three categories according to mortality risk. An SGS ≤4 showed no association with mortality [n = 323 (79.9 % of the total study population), and all survived]. An SGS between 5 and 8 points was classified into the intermediate risk group (20 %), and 14 of 70 patients in this group died. An SGS ≥9 was classified as the high risk of mortality group and 11 of 11 patients in this group died (p = 0.001). The sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value for an SGS >9 points at admission were 96, 100, 97, 100, and 44 %, respectively. This SGS system may help appropriate the triage of patients, decrease the cost of treatment, and improve the functionality of healthcare staff. The present study is the first investigation about the validation of an SGS system in patients with CCHF.

Evaluation of tularaemia courses: a multicentre study from Turkey

In this multicentre study, which is the largest case series ever reported, we aimed to describe the features of tularaemia to provide detailed information. We retrospectively included 1034 patients from 41 medical centres. Before the definite diagnosis of tularaemia, tonsillitis (n = 653, 63%) and/or pharyngitis (n = 146, 14%) were the most frequent preliminary diagnoses. The most frequent clinical presentations were oropharyngeal (n = 832, 85.3%), glandular (n = 136, 13.1%) and oculoglandular (n = 105, 10.1%) forms. In 987 patients (95.5%), the lymph nodes were reported to be enlarged, most frequently at the cervical chain jugular (n = 599, 58%), submandibular (n = 401, 39%), and periauricular (n = 55, 5%). Ultrasound imaging showed hyperechoic and hypoechoic patterns (59% and 25%, respectively). Granulomatous inflammation was the most frequent histological finding (56%). The patients were previously given antibiotics for 1176 episodes, mostly with β-lactam/β-lactamase inhibitors (n = 793, 76%). Antituberculosis medications were provided in seven (2%) cases. The patients were given rational antibiotics for tularaemia after the start of symptoms, with a mean of 26.8 ± 37.5 days. Treatment failure was considered to have occurred in 495 patients (48%). The most frequent reasons for failure were the production of suppuration in the lymph nodes after the start of treatment (n = 426, 86.1%), the formation of new lymphadenomegalies under treatment (n = 146, 29.5%), and persisting complaints despite 2 weeks of treatment (n = 77, 15.6%). Fine-needle aspiration was performed in 521 patients (50%) as the most frequent drainage method. In conclusion, tularaemia is a long-lasting but curable disease in this part of the world. However, the treatment strategy still needs optimization.

The features of infectious diseases departments and anti-infective practices in France and Turkey: a cross-sectional study

The aim of this study was to assess the infectious diseases (ID) wards of tertiary hospitals in France and Turkey for technical capacity, infection control, characteristics of patients, infections, infecting organisms, and therapeutic approaches. This cross-sectional study was carried out on a single day on one of the weekdays of June 17-21, 2013. Overall, 36 ID departments from Turkey (n = 21) and France (n = 15) were involved. On the study day, 273 patients were hospitalized in Turkish and 324 patients were followed in French ID departments. The numbers of patients and beds in the hospitals, and presence of an intensive care unit (ICU) room in the ID ward was not different in both France and Turkey. Bed occupancy in the ID ward, single rooms, and negative pressure rooms were significantly higher in France. The presence of a laboratory inside the ID ward was more common in Turkish ID wards. The configuration of infection control committees, and their qualifications and surveillance types were quite similar in both countries. Although differences existed based on epidemiology, the distribution of infections were uniform on both sides. In Turkey, anti-Gram-positive agents, carbapenems, and tigecycline, and in France, cephalosporins, penicillins, aminoglycosides, and metronidazole were more frequently preferred. Enteric Gram-negatives and hepatitis B and C were more frequent in Turkey, while human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and streptococci were more common in France (p < 0.05 for all significances). Various differences and similarities existed in France and Turkey in the ID wards. However, the current scene is that ID are managed with high standards in both countries.

Comparison of colistin-carbapenem, colistin-sulbactam, and colistin plus other antibacterial agents for the treatment of extremely drug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii bloodstream infections

The purpose of this investigation was to compare the efficacy of colistin-based therapies in extremely drug-resistant Acinetobacter spp. bloodstream infections (XDR-ABSI). A retrospective study was conducted in 27 tertiary-care centers from January 2009 to August 2012. The primary end-point was 14-day survival, and the secondary end-points were clinical and microbiological outcomes. Thirty-six and 214 patients [102 (47.7%): colistin-carbapenem (CC), 69 (32.2%): colistin-sulbactam (CS), and 43 (20.1%: tigecycline): colistin with other agent (CO)] received colistin monotherapy and colistin-based combinations, respectively. Rates of complete response/cure and 14-day survival were relatively higher, and microbiological eradication was significantly higher in the combination group. Also, the in-hospital mortality rate was significantly lower in the combination group. No significant difference was found in the clinical (p = 0.97) and microbiological (p = 0.92) outcomes and 14-day survival rates (p = 0.79) between the three combination groups. Neither the timing of initial effective treatment nor the presence of any concomitant infection was significant between the three groups (p > 0.05) and also for 14-day survival (p > 0.05). Higher Pitt bacteremia score (PBS), Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation II (APACHE II) score, Charlson comorbidity index (CCI), and prolonged hospital and intensive care unit (ICU) stay before XDR-ABSI were significant risk factors for 14-day mortality (p = 0.02, p = 0.0001, p = 0.0001, p = 0.02, and p = 0.01, respectively). In the multivariable analysis, PBS, age, and duration of ICU stay were independent risk factors for 14-day mortality (p < 0.0001, p < 0.0001, and p = 0.001, respectively). Colistin-based combination therapy resulted in significantly higher microbiological eradication rates, relatively higher cure and 14-day survival rates, and lower in-hospital mortality compared to colistin monotherapy. CC, CS, and CO combinations for XDR-ABSI did not reveal significant differences with respect to 14-day survival and clinical or microbiological outcome before and after propensity score matching (PSM). PBS, age, and length of ICU stay were independent risk factors for 14-day mortality.

Thyroid hormones-mediated effects of insulin on antioxidant enzymes from diabetic rat hearts

Free radicals, oxidative stress, and antioxidants have become commonly used terms in modern discussion of disease mechanisms. Accumulation of evidence suggests that toxic oxygen-derived reactive free radicals (superoxide, peroxide and hydroxyl radicals) play a crucial role in etiology of diabetes and its complication. Thus, it was aimed to determine the role of thyroid hormones in reversal of antioxidatant enzyme activities and lipid peroxidation alterations observed in experimentally induced diabetic rat hearts. The present study investigates the antioxidant enzyme activities such as SOD, CAT, GSH-Px and lipid peroxidation products in cardiac tissues of streptozotosin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats before and after thyroidectomy. Our results showed that CAT, GPx enzyme activities and FOX, MDA levels were increased (p<0.05) during diabetes, hypothyroidism and hypothyroidism with diabetes, which can be regulated in different percentages with treatment of insulin and various doses of thyroid hormone ((p<0.05). In conclusion, in this study, the possible contribution of thyroid hormones to the insulin effect of normalizing the induced diabetic changes in cardiac tissue and serum of rat has been seen (Tab. 5, Ref. 32).

The importance of myeloperoxidase enzyme activity in the pathogenesis of Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever

Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is a disease with a severe course including acute viral haemorrhagic fever, ecchymosis, thrombocytopenia, hepatic function disorder and high mortality. Myeloperoxidase (MPO) is an enzyme located in neutrophil granulocytes and plays an important role in the destruction of phagocytosed micro-organisms. The aim of this study was to analyse MPO enzyme activity in CCHF cases compared with a control group. A total of 47 randomly selected CCHF patients admitted to the Department of Infectious Diseases of Cumhuriyet University Hospital in Sivas, Turkey, were studied, and as a control group, 41 age- and sex-matched individuals without any systemic disease were included in this study. MPO enzyme activity was measured in plasma and leukocytes for both groups by the ELISA method. MPO plasma and MPO leukocyte values were calculated as 57.62 ± 8.85 and 44.84 ± 9.71 in CCHF patients, and 0.79 ± 0.29 and 0.49 ± 0.11 in the controls, respectively. MPO enzyme activity was statistically significantly higher in patients with CCHF when compared to the control group. In conclusion, MPO enzyme activity is directly related to the activation of phagocytic leukocytes, and increases in both the plasma and leukocytes in CCHF patients. The increase of the MPO enzyme activity in leukocytes due to viral load leads to the destruction of the leukocyte. It is thought that MPO enzyme activity in plasma was higher in CCHF patients due to the destruction of leukocytes. MPO enzyme activity may be important in terms of the prognosis in patients with CCHF; however, more extensive studies are required on this subject.

The frequency of self-reported allergic diseases in patients with crimean-congo haemorrhagic fever

BACKGROUND

Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is an acute, tick-borne viral disease. In temperate areas, CCHF cases occur between spring and early autumn when tick activity is high. This period is also the pollen season during which symptoms of allergic diseases are exacerbated. Viruses induce inflammatory and antiviral responses by binding to specific receptors on the surface of airway epithelial cells, resulting in activation of innate immune responses; release of mediators such as cytokines and chemokines; and recruitment of neutrophils and mononuclear cells to the area.

AIM

We aimed to evaluate the frequency of self-reported allergic diseases and the effect on CCHF severity.

METHOD

Between June and August 2008, a questionnaire was applied to 114 CCHF (+) patients and 122 healthy control subjects, 16 to 88 years old who attended the Infectious Diseases clinic and were hospitalised with CCHF suspected, by face to face interview including history of allergic rhinitis (AR), asthma symptoms and nonspecific bronchial reactivity, doctor diagnosed AR and/or asthma, and familial allergic diseases history.

RESULTS

According to PCR and/or enzyme-linked immunoassay (ELISA) results, 51.7% of patients (n=114) had CCHF. There was no significant relation between CCHF and history of AR, asthma symptoms and nonspecific bronchial reactivity, doctor diagnosed AR and/or asthma, and familial allergic diseases history. The severity of CCHF has not affected these parameters (p>.05). Of patients with positive CCHF test, 2.6% (n=3) and 3.5% (n=4) had doctor diagnosed AR and asthma, respectively.

CONCLUSION

Self-reported allergic diseases and CCHF are not related with each other.

A case of brain abscess due to Entamoeba species, Eikenella corrodens and Prevotella species

We report a case of brain abscess due to multiple pathogens including Entamoeba species, Eikenella corrodens and Prevotella species. Patient had odontogenic infection without any site of amoebic infestation. Complete recovery was achieved with surgical treatment and antimicrobial therapy.

Tick paralysis with atypical presentation: isolated, reversible involvement of the upper trunk of brachial plexus

Tick paralysis is a disease that occurs worldwide. It is a relatively rare but potentially fatal condition. The only way to establish the diagnosis is to carefully search for the tick paralysis. It is caused by a neurotoxin secreted by engorged female ticks. Tick paralysis generally begins in the lower extremities and ascends symmetrically to involve the trunk, upper extremities and head within a few hours. Although early-onset prominent bulbar palsy and isolated facial weakness without generalised paralysis are rare, there is no report in the English literature concerning isolated, reversible involvement of the upper trunk of brachial plexus caused by tick bite. We report a case of isolated, reversible involvement of the upper trunk of brachial plexus as a variant of tick paralysis. Diagnosis was confirmed with needle electromyography and nerve conduction examination. Within 2 weeks, the patient was fully recovered. The purpose of presenting this case is to remind clinicians that tick paralysis should be considered even in cases with atypical neurological findings admitted to the emergency department.

Effects of obstructive jaundice on the antioxidative capacity of human red blood cells

Transient haemolysis and shortened erythrocyte lifespan are reported in association with extrahepatic biliary tract obstruction. An increase in lipid peroxidation has been noted as evidence of oxidative damage in red cells due to cholestasis. The influence of surgical relief on the antioxidative capacity of the erythrocyte is less well defined. The ability of erythrocytes to regenerate the antioxidative capacity after side-to-side choledo-choduodenostomy was assessed by measuring the two principal antioxidant enzymes, namely superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT), as well as the glutathione (GSH) content in the red blood cells (RBC) taken from patients with obstructive jaundice. A comparison of patients and healthy volunteers revealed a consistent decrease in enzyme activities (pSOD = 0.01, pCAT = 0.0002) and glutathione concentrations (PGSH = 0.0000) in cholestatic patients. Statistical analysis proved a clear correlation between the surgical relief of common bile duct obstruction and restored antioxidative capacity of red cells. These observations suggest that the red cells from patients with multiple common bile duct stones almost completely regenerated their antioxidative capacity four weeks after side-to-side choledochoduodenostomy.

Stress hyperglycemia in minimally invasive surgery

This study examined the selected hormonal responses to, and hormone-mediated glucose metabolism during minimally invasive surgery in, patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy for symptomatic gallstone disease. Thirty-two patients with symptomatic gallstone disease were included in this study and scheduled for open or laparoscopic procedure in a randomized trial. Results are expressed as mean and standard error of the mean. Statistical evaluations were performed with Mann-Whitney U and Wilcoxon signed-rank tests. Blood cortisol, glucagon, insulin, and glucose concentrations were measured immediately in the preoperative period and 6 h after surgery. Blood cortisol, glucagon, and glucose concentrations increased significantly after open and minimally invasive surgery, while insulin levels and the insulin:glucagon ratio remained unchanged. The rise of glucagon and cortisol values was found to be significantly higher in the postoperative period of the open procedure, than in the laparoscopic approach. However, in the patients who underwent open surgery, the increase in glucose concentrations was not significantly higher in the postoperative period. Surgery-induced hormonal effects on the islets increase glucagon and suppress insulin secretion. The glucagon-mediated increase in hepatic glucose production is excluded by the posttraumatic insulin levels from the insulin-sensitive tissues. A bihormonal setting favors a greater rate of hepatic glucose production in both open and laparoscopic surgery. Hormonal changes do reflect the degree of surgical stress, but their metabolic consequences are not parallel to the grade of surgical trauma in minimally invasive surgery.

The effect of lethal endotoxaemia on the liver glycogen metabolism in guineapigs with common bile duct obstruction

The effect of hepatocellular trauma due to bile reflux and endotoxaemia on liver glycogen metabolism was studied in guineapigs with common bile duct obstruction. Considerable drops in basal glycogen levels of hepatocytes from bile duct ligated (BDL) animals were recorded in comparison with the sham operated (SHAM) ones. However, the regurgitation of bile did not affect the basal blood glucose concentrations of BDL guineapigs. The circulating glucose was consumed, mainly reflecting the level of energy requirement of the peripheral tissues in the endotoxaemic SHAM pair-fed animals and the BDL group. The hepatic glycogen stores failed to prevent the SHAM group from becoming hypoglycaemic at the end of the eighth hour after endotoxin administration. Enhancement in glucose consumption and diminished liver glycogen indicated the necessity of glucose intake in the early phase of extrahepatic bile duct obstruction. It was concluded that both endogenous and exogenous glucose have limited value in improving energy metabolism in lethal endotoxaemia following bile duct obstruction.

The protective effect of thromboxane synthetase inhibitor UK 38485 against bile duct ligation induced liver injury

In order to elucidate the relation between tissue eicosanoids and liver injury due to bile duct obstruction, we have examined the effects of iloprost, a stable analogue of prostaglandin I2 (PGI2), and UK 38485 (UK), an inhibitor of thromboxane synthetase, on prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and leukotriene C4(LTC4) in guinea pig liver. 56 male guinea pigs were divided into the following groups: (i) sham operations (SHAM), (ii) bile duct ligated (BDL) group, (iii) guinea pigs given UK (5 micrograms/kg body wt intraperitoneally 10 min, 8 h and 16 h after bile duct ligation), and (iv) guinea pigs treated with iloprost (ILO) (2 micrograms/kg body wt intraperitoneally 10 min, 8 h and 16 h after bile duct ligation). Liver damage was assessed by blind quantitation of liver cell necrosis. Bile duct ligation caused an increase in tissue PGE2-like activity and a decrease LTC4-like activity. But the most pronounced elevation of PGE2-like activity was observed in ILO treated group. The LTC4-like activity level improved significantly in the UK-treated BDL group compared with the BDL only and ILO treated animals. Also, UK was found to be beneficial in preventing the liver cell necrosis due to cholestasis. It is concluded that the ratio of PGE2/LTC4 in liver is a valuable marker for cholestatic injury.

Effect of the sulfonylurea glyburide on superoxide dismutase activity in alloxan-induced diabetic rat hepatocytes

In the present study we administrated glyburide (glibenclamide) to type 2 (NIDDM) diabetic rats and determined the effect of such treatment on liver superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity. Hepatic SOD activity was significantly reduced in diabetic animals. Glyburide treatment of diabetic rats for 4 weeks corrected the changes observed in diabetic liver. In addition, blood glucose levels of untreated diabetic rats decreased following glyburide treatment. Administration of glyburide to diabetic rats reversed the diabetes-induced changes, suggesting that glyburide may directly increase liver SOD enzyme activity.

The effect of short term lithium treatment on the leukocyte, liver and muscle carbohydrate metabolism of guinea-pigs

1. The effect of lithium treatment on the leukocyte, liver and muscle glycogen levels of guinea-pigs has been studied. 2. A 4-week treatment with lithium chloride (5 mmol/l i.p. in saline) increased leukocyte, liver and muscle glycogen and decreased blood glucose levels. 3. These results strongly suggest that a lithium-induced insulin-like effect may be related to the long term effect.

Changes in gastric mucosal histamine and prostaglandin E2-like activities in relation to portal somatostatin following small bowel resection in guinea-pigs

The effects of 85% intestinal resection on the portal somatostatin (SLI) gastric mucosal histamine (HA) and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2)-like activities were studied in guinea-pigs. A considerable increase in gastric mucosal HA-like activity of guinea-pigs subjected to small bowel resection (189.9 +/- 15.0 ng/g tissue) was measured in comparison to control values (42.9 +/- 6.3 ng/g tissue) (p < 0.001). The mean tissue PGE2-like activity in the sham operated group was 1636.9 +/- 128.8 ng/g tissue, whereas in the test group it was 650.5 +/- 59.3 ng/g tissue. After 85% small bowel resection a significant fall in portal and systemic venous SLI values was observed (T = 0, p < 0.05). Thus, the small bowel seems to be a major source of the increase of gastric mucosal HA-like activity and the decrease in PGE2-like activity.

Liver glycogen in gangrenous intestinal obstruction

Considerable drops in liver glycogen contents of guinea pigs suffering from gangrenous intestinal obstruction were recorded in regard to control values (P less than 0.001). An additional experiment was conducted by using carbontetrachloride (CT) to determine whether or not the shortening of survival related to liver glycogen content in animals with strangulation obstruction. The mean tissue glycogen content in the sham-operated group was 816.2 +/- 13.3 micrograms/g, w. wt., whereas in the CT-treated group it was 73.5 +/- 11.0 micrograms/g w. wt. This difference is highly significant (P less than 0.001). The mean survival was 54.4 +/- 5.8 h and 21.9 +/- 5.5 h in animals with gangrenous intestinal obstruction before and after CT treatment, respectively. These results suggested that the liver glycogen depletion was a significant factor in decreasing the survival time of guinea pigs with strangulation obstruction.

Side-to-side choledochoduodenostomy in the management of choledocholithiasis

Sixty patients with choledocholithiasis (either single or multiple stones of the biliary tree) were treated with lateral choledochoduodenostomy. Of these cases 83.3% were followed up for from 1 to 7 years. Only 1 patient developed cholangitis, which responded well to conservative treatment. The other cases have been asymptomatic following surgery. The diameter of the common bile duct is not an important problem in constructing a functional anastomosis.

Glutathione content of human skin carcinomas

Glutathione has important functions in the process leading to the complete neoplastic transformation of the primary cells in experimental carcinogenesis. This study was made to determine the tissue glutathione levels in the human skin carcinomas. The statistical average of glutathione values were measured by the DTNB method as 0.915 +/- 0.073 mg/g wet weight in test group and 0.126 +/- 0.008 mg/g wet weight in control group.
