Abstract
In coastal areas, microplastics (MPs) can deposit in sediment, allowing it to be ingested by benthic organisms, like mussels, thus creating a possible transfer to humans. The aim of this study is to evaluate MPs pollution in sediment as a function of shoreline elevation in two urbanized beaches and to evaluate the abundance/frequency of MPs in 4 different species of bivalves commonly used in the human diet, such as the oyster Crassostrea brasiliana, the mussels Mytella strigata and Perna perna and the clam Tivela mactroides, and identify the polymers via μ-FTIR technique. A total of 3337 MPs were found in this study, of which 1488 were found in the sediment at the five sites analyzed, and 1849 in the bivalve tissues at the two sampling sites. MPs contamination was observed in all sediment samples and species of the pool and in each of the 10 specimens of the four species. Thus, the frequency of contamination by MPs reached 100 % for the analyzed samples. The number of filaments is higher than fragments in sediment samples and in each bivalve species. Regarding types and colors, the blue were greater than fragment-type in sediments and samples. In an effort to classify the polymers via μ-FTIR, our study was able to identify polypropylene, polyethylene and polyethylene terephthalate, besides a great number of cellulose fibers.

Abstract
The Northern region of the Antarctic Peninsula constitutes the area with the highest human presence in West Antarctica. The human presence, with all the activities associated such as logistic, scientific and tourism operations, represents a potential risk of chemical pollution with both, organic and inorganic contaminants. Under these conditions knowledge about the presence and levels of the main persistent organic pollutants (POPs) is essential to evaluate the environmental status of this ecologically relevant and sensitive area. In this work, which complements our previous study regarding trace elements, we performed the first regional-scale monitoring of 24 PAHs (16 of them included in EPA list of primary pollutant), and organotin compounds (OTCs:TBT, DBT and MBT) in surface sediment from 68 sites comprising six different areas in Maxwell Bay, southeast coast of 25 de Mayo (King George) Island. POPs were quantified in surface sediment samples (20-30 m depth) obtained during two summer Antarctic expeditions by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The two most anthropized areas (South Fildes and Potter Cove) showed moderated evidence of pollution for PAHs and OTC. In some sampling sites the concentration of total PAHs was higher than 100 ng/g dw, while TBT was detected in only five samples, two of them located in Potter Cove (ranged between 14 and 18 ng/g dw), and three, located in South Fildes area (ranged between 118 and 416 ng/g dw). Although POPs contamination was evidenced in some samples close to scientific stations, a pollution pattern was not clearly identified.

Abstract
Increased use and improved methodology of carbonate clumped isotope thermometry has greatly enhanced our ability to interrogate a suite of Earth-system processes. However, interlaboratory discrepancies in quantifying carbonate clumped isotope (Δ47) measurements persist, and their specific sources remain unclear. To address interlaboratory differences, we first provide consensus values from the clumped isotope community for four carbonate standards relative to heated and equilibrated gases with 1,819 individual analyses from 10 laboratories. Then we analyzed the four carbonate standards along with three additional standards, spanning a broad range of δ47 and Δ47 values, for a total of 5,329 analyses on 25 individual mass spectrometers from 22 different laboratories. Treating three of the materials as known standards and the other four as unknowns, we find that the use of carbonate reference materials is a robust method for standardization that yields interlaboratory discrepancies entirely consistent with intralaboratory analytical uncertainties. Carbonate reference materials, along with measurement and data processing practices described herein, provide the carbonate clumped isotope community with a robust approach to achieve interlaboratory agreement as we continue to use and improve this powerful geochemical tool. We propose that carbonate clumped isotope data normalized to the carbonate reference materials described in this publication should be reported as Δ47 (I-CDES) values for Intercarb-Carbon Dioxide Equilibrium Scale.

Abstract
Commercial and medicinal applications of functionalized carbon nanotubes (f-CNTs) such as amidated f-CNTs are expanding rapidly with a potential risk exposure to living organisms. The effects of amidated f-CNTs on aquatic species have received a limited attention. In this work, an easy wet method to prepare [14C]-label amide multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) is reported. Labeled carbon nanotubes were prepared by successive reactions of carboxylation, chloroacylation, and final amidation using [14C]-labeled ethanolamine. The f-CNTs were characterized using elemental analysis, electron dispersive X-ray, transmission electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and Raman and FTIR spectroscopy. An uptake experiment was carried out with juvenile Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus) using water dispersed amidated [14C]-f-CNTs to assess their biodistribution in fish tissues using whole body autoradiography. The radioactivity pattern observed in fish head suggests that f-CNTs were accumulated in head bone canals, possibly involving an interaction with mineral or organic phases of bones such as calcium and collagen. This f-CNTs distribution illustrates how important is to consider the surface charges of functionalized carbon nanotubes in ecotoxicological studies.

Abstract
This study presents the first whole-body tissue distributions of dissolved (AgI) and 20 nm silver nanoparticles (Ag0NPs20) in fish (Arctic charr, Salvelinus alpinus). The distributions are provided for fish exposed to three different treatments: (i) intravenous (IV), (ii) dietary, and (iii) waterborne. Quantitative whole-body autoradiography (QWBA) analyses obtained on high-resolution images reveal distinct silver distribution patterns according to the treatments. The IV exposures showed that AgNPs20 were mainly located in bile and kidney after 8 d, while AgI was distributed through the whole body and reached particular tissues such as bones, eyes, skin, liver, spleen, kidney, and intestine. The Ag0NPs20 distribution with the dietary exposures suggests that some dissolution occurred within fish organs. We propose that dissolved silver could later precipitate as chloride, sulfide, or selenide and be incorporated in bones during the growth. Consequently, it is yet difficult to state if Ag0NPs20 cross biological barriers. Finally, the waterborne exposures revealed that the gills can capture Ag0NPs20, but in small quantities. This suggests that the stability of Ag0NPs20 in water is critical for the uptake via the gills.

Abstract
Western Antarctica (WA) constitutes the area with the highest human presence in the white continent and also the region where the effects of global warming are more evident worldwide. Such human presence represents a potential risk of pollution with both, organic and inorganic contaminants. Global warming also could modify dynamics and transport of the pollutants, increasing summer water runoff, ice melting and iceberg scouring. Under this fast-changing scenario, knowledge about the concentration of contaminants is essential to evaluate the environmental status of this ecologically relevant area. In this work, we performed the first regional-scale monitoring of 9 trace elements (Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Pb, Cd and Hg), as well as Fe and Mn, in surface sediment from 64 sites comprising six different areas in Maxwell Bay, 25 de Mayo (King George) Island. Target elements were quantified in surface sediment samples (20-30 m depth) obtained during two summer Antarctic expeditions: 2010/11 and 2011/12 by inductively coupled plasma linked to a quadrupole mass spectrometer (ICP-MS). Based on the average values observed for the reference areas, baseline values were defined for the studied region. A regional enrichment in Cu (compared with the global mean upper crust) was observed and related to the widespread mineralization of volcanic rocks. The most anthropized area (South Fildes) mainly showed sediment class 3 (moderately polluted) for Pb, Cd and Hg with a number samples revealing some highly contaminated hot spots. Although elemental contamination in some samples close to scientific stations or sites where logistic operations were evidenced, a pollution pattern was not clearly identified. The present work represents the first regional-scale attempt to define the baseline values and the anthropic impacts in this region of the WA and also provides the first data about Hg concentration in surface sediment of the study area.

Abstract
During summer 2014-2017, wild mytilid mussels, highly infested with the pathogenic Coccomyxa-like microalgae, were collected along the Estuary and northwestern part of Gulf of St. Lawrence (Québec, Canada). Molecular identification showed that algae can be assigned to a single taxon, Coccomyxa sp. (KJ372210), whereas hosts are represented by Mytilus edulis, M. trossulus and hybrid between these two species. This is the first record of M. trossulus and hybrid among hosts of this pathogenic alga. Our results are indicative of a possible widespread distribution of Coccomyxa sp. in the Lower St. Lawrence Estuary and along coastal waters of Canadian Maritime provinces.

Abstract
Objective Providing feedback to mammography radiologists and facilities may improve interpretive performance. We conducted a web-based survey to investigate how and why such feedback is undertaken and used in mammographic screening programmes. Methods The survey was sent to representatives in 30 International Cancer Screening Network member countries where mammographic screening is offered. Results Seventeen programmes in 14 countries responded to the survey. Audit feedback was aimed at readers in 14 programmes, and facilities in 12 programmes. Monitoring quality assurance was the most common purpose of audit feedback. Screening volume, recall rate, and rate of screen-detected cancers were typically reported performance measures. Audit reports were commonly provided annually, but more frequently when target guidelines were not reached. Conclusion The purpose, target audience, performance measures included, form and frequency of the audit feedback varied amongst mammographic screening programmes. These variations may provide a basis for those developing and improving such programmes.

Abstract
BackgroundCluster B personality disorder (PD) is a highly prevalent mental health condition in general population (1 to 6% depending on the subtype and study). Patients affected are known to be heavier users of both mental and medical healthcare than other clinical conditions such as depression. Few studies have highlighted their elevated mortality rate compared to general population.MethodsThe estimates were produced using data from the integrated monitoring system for chronic disease of Quebec. It provides annual and life prevalence, mortality rate, years of and healthcare utilization profile Quebec inhabitants.ResultsA total of 7,995,963 people were included in the study. The life prevalence of cluster B PD is 2.6%. The mean years of lost life is 13 for men and 9 for women when they are compared to general population. The 3 most important causes of death are: suicide (20.4%), cardiovascular diseases (19.1%) and cancers (18.6%). The standardized mortality ratio (SMR) for each medical condition is superior in cluster B personality disorders than general population. The most important SMR is for suicide (male: 10.2 and female: 21). In the year 2011–2012, 78% had consulted a general practitioner, 62% a psychiatrist, 41% were admitted in an emergency department and 21% were hospitalized.Disclosure of interestThe authors have not supplied their declaration of competing interest.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE By-the-book implementation of non-invasive prenatal test and clinical validation for trisomy 21. STUDY DESIGN Publicly funded prospective study of 225 cases. Women at risk for trisomy 21 > 1/250 based on combined ultrasound and serum markers during first or second trimester were eligible following an informed consent. The technique was established from the available literature and performed on 10 mL of venous blood collected prior to chorionic villus sampling or amniocentesis. Investigators were blinded to the fetal karyotype. Results were expressed in Z-scores of the percentage of each chromosome. RESULTS Among 976 eligible cases, 225 were processed: 8 were used for pretesting phase and 23 to build a reference set. One hundred thirty six euploid cases and 47 with trisomy 21 were then run randomly. Eleven cases yielded no result (4.8%). Z-scores were above 3 (7.58+/-2.41) for chromosome 21 in all 47 trisomies and in none of the euploid cases (0.11+/-1.0). Z-scores were within normal range for the other chromosomes in both groups. Using a cut-off of 3, sensitivity and specificity were of 100% 95% CI [94.1, 100] and 100% 95% CI [98, 100], respectively. CONCLUSION Non-invasive prenatal test for trisomy 21 is a robust strategy that can be translated from seminal publications. Publicly funded studies should refine its indications and cost-effectiveness in prenatal screening and diagnosis. © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract
Our aim is to highlight the subtle relationship that exists between microbiota and mitochondria. Microbiota targets mitochondria by modulating the Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) production and the mitochondrial activity through interactions with toxins, proteins or other metabolites released by gut microbiota. The intriguing relationship that exists between mitochondria and microbiota is strengthened by the probable prokaryotic origin of mitochondria. Emerging data implicates a role for ROS, nitric oxide, Short Chain Fatty Acids and hydrogen sulfide in the cross-talk between microbiota - mitochondria and REDOX signaling. Several studies have shown that microbiota act and modulate mitochondrial activity, and use it as a relay to strengthen host-microbiotal interaction. This modulation depends on the gut bacterial strain quality and diversity to increase its pathogenic versus beneficial effects. Furthermore, based on conclusions from new studies, it is possible that microbiota can directly interact with the host cell gene expression by favoring bacterial and mitochondrial DNA insertion in the nuclear genome. The emerging knowledge of mitochondria-microbiota interaction may be of great importance to better understand the mechanism of mitochondrial and metabolic diseases, and the syndromes associated with change in quality and quantity of microbiotal species. We suggest that microbiota via mitochondrial modulation influence cell homeostasis and metabolism. The challenge will be to find strategies to modulate the quality and diversity of microbiota rather than acting on microbiota metabolites and microbiota related factors. The medicine of tomorrow will be completely personalized. Firstly there will be a test to show the quality, quantity and diversity of microbiota, and secondly a preventive or therapeutic strategy will be administrated (probiotics, diet, prodrug or fecal transplantation). The era of digital medicine is here.

Abstract
Studies on metal contamination in 25 de Mayo Island, Antarctica, yielded controversial results. In this work, we analyzed Antarctic marine sediments and Antarctic clam (Laternula elliptica) tissues to investigate the possible use of this mollusk as a biomonitor of metals and to identify the sources of metal pollution. Different types of paint from several buildings from Carlini Station were examined to assess their contribution to the local and random metal pollution. Five sediment samples, 105 L. elliptica specimens (40.2-78.0mm length) and four types of paint were analyzed to quantify Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb and Zn using inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry. Metal concentrations in sediments were lower than the global averages of the earth's crust, with the exception of Cd and Cu. These results were related to the contribution of the local fresh-water runoff. The different varieties of paint showed low levels of Cu, Mn, Fe and Zn, whereas a broad range of values were found in the case of Cr and Pb (20-15,100 μg·g(-1) and 153-115,500 μg·g(-1) respectively). The remains of the paint would be responsible for the significant increases in Cr and Pb which are randomly detected by us and by other authors. High levels of Fe and Cd, in comparison to other Antarctic areas, appear to be related to the terrigenous materials transported by the local streams. Accumulation indexes suggested that kidney tissue from L. elliptica could be an adequate material for biomonitoring pollution with Cd, Zn and probably also Pb. In general, relationships between size and metal contents reported by other authors were not verified, suggesting that this issue should be revised.

Abstract
The Deepwater Horizon oil spill caused the death of a large number of seabirds in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010. However, the long term consequences of oil exposure on migratory birds overwintering in this area have received limited attention. The present study aimed to investigate the impact of oil contamination (e.g., polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)) on the circulating status of prolactin and corticosterone, two hormones that influence reproductive success in birds, in Northern gannets (Morus bassanus) breeding on Bonaventure Island, Eastern Canada. Using light-based geolocators, it was found that 23.5% of Northern gannets from Bonaventure Island overwintered in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010-2011; the remainder of this population overwintered along the Atlantic Coast of the United States. PAH concentrations (eight compounds) in gannet blood cells were all found to be under the method limits of quantification, which could be the result of the ability of seabirds to metabolize these compounds and the time elapsed between oil exposure and blood sampling. Corticosterone and prolactin levels as well as body mass did not differ between the two major birds' wintering sites. Moreover, levels of both these hormones did not vary from early to late incubation period. Present results suggest that if Bonaventure Island-breeding Northern gannets had been exposed to oil in the Gulf of Mexico in the aftermath of this historical spill, this exposure could not be associated with changes in hormonal status and body mass in breeding individuals.

Abstract
The potential toxic effects of carboxylated (COOH) single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) were investigated on the cell growth and viability of two reference (Silicibacter pomeroyi, Oceanospirillum beijerinckii) and two environmental (Vibrio splendidus, Vibrio gigantis) Gram-negative marine bacterial strains. Bacterial cells were exposed to six concentrations of SWNT-COOH, during different incubation times. Our results revealed different sensitivity levels of marine bacterial strains toward SWNT-COOH exposure. A bactericidal effect of SWNT-COOH has been observed only for Vibrio species, with cell loss viability estimated to 86% for V. gigantis and 98% for V. splendidus exposed to 100 μg mL(-1) of SWNT-COOH during 2h. For both Vibrio strains, dead cells were well individualized and no aggregate formation was observed after SWNT-COOH treatment. The toxic effect of SWNT-COOH on O. beijerinckii cells displayed time dependence, with a longer exposure time reducing their specific growth rate by a factor of 1.2. No significant effect of SWNT-COOH concentration or incubation time had been demonstrated on both growth ability and viability of S. pomeroyi, suggesting a stronger resistance capacity of this strain to carbon nanotubes. The analysis of the relative expression of some functional genes involved in stress responses, using the real-time reverse transcriptase PCR, suggests that the cell membrane damage is not the main toxicity mechanism by which SWNT-COOH interacts with marine bacterial strains. Overall, our results show that SWNT-COOH present a strain dependent toxic effect to marine bacteria and that membrane damage is not the main toxicity mechanism of SWNT in these bacteria.

Abstract
Contemporary environmental challenges have emphasized the need to critically assess the use of bivalve mollusks in chemical monitoring (identification and quantification of pollutants) and biomonitoring (estimation of environmental quality). Many authors, however, have considered these approaches within a single context, i.e., as a means of chemical (e.g. metal) monitoring. Bivalves are able to accumulate substantial amounts of metals from ambient water, but evidence for the drastic effects of accumulated metals (e.g. as a TBT-induced shell deformation and imposex) on the health of bivalves has not been documented. Metal bioaccumulation is a key tool in biomonitoring; bioavailability, bioaccumulation, and toxicity of various metals in relation to bivalves are described in some detail including the development of biodynamic metal bioaccumulation model. Measuring metal in the whole-body or the tissue of bivalves themselves does not accurately represent true contamination levels in the environment; these data are critical for our understanding of contaminant trends at sampling sites. Only rarely has metal bioaccumulation been considered in combination with data on metal concentrations in parts of the ecosystem, observation of biomarkers and environmental parameters. Sclerochemistry is in its infancy and cannot be reliably used to provide insights into the pollution history recorded in shells. Alteration processes and mineral crystallization on the inner shell surface are presented here as a perspective tool for environmental studies.

Abstract
The fast expansion of the global nanotechnology market entails a higher environmental and human exposure to nanomaterials. Silver nanoparticles (AgNP) are used for their antibacterial properties; however, their environmental fate is yet poorly understood. Iceland scallops (Chlamys islandica) were exposed for 12 h to three different silver forms, dissolved Ag(I) (Agdiss), small (S-NP, Ø = 10-20 nm) and large AgNP (L-NP, Ø = 70-80 nm), labeled with (110m)Ag, and bioaccumulation kinetics and tissue distribution using in vivo gamma counting and whole-body autoradiography were determined. All Ag forms were readily and rapidly accumulated. Elimination process was also fast and bi-exponential, with mean biological half-life ranging from 1.4 to 4.3 days and from 17 to 50 days for fast and slow compartments, respectively. Most of the radioactivity concentrated in the hepatopancreas. Agdiss and S-NP tissue distributions were similar indicating a rapid dissolution of the latter in the tissues, contrarily to L-NP which appeared to form long lasting aggregates in the digestive system. Estimated steady-state bioconcentration factors (BCF), ranging between 2700 and 3800 ml g(-1) for dissolved and particulate silver forms, showed that C. islandica can accumulate significant quantities of Ag in a short time followed by an efficient depuration process.

Abstract
The use of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in consumer products is increasing drastically and their potential environmental impacts on aquatic organisms from bacterial communities to vertebrates are not well understood. This study reports on changes in marine bacterial richness using denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE), and overall community abundance determined by flow cytometry in marine microcosms exposed to polymer-coated AgNPs (20±5 nm) and ionic silver (Ag(+)). Our study clearly demonstrated that at low concentrations (5 and 50 μg L(-1) total silver), un-aggregated polymer-coated AgNPs and dissolved Ag(+) contamination produced similar effects: a longer lag phase suggesting an adaptation period for microorganisms. As richness decreased in the treated samples, this longer lag phase could correspond to the selection of a fraction of the initial community that is insensitive to silver contamination. Polymer-coated AgNPs preserved their bactericidal properties even under the high ionic strength of estuarine waters.

Abstract
External shell surface (ESS) of bivalve mollusks is known to adsorb various metals dissolved in ambient water in high concentration. It is hypothesized here that the surface microtopography of the thin organic coating layer, periostracum, or calcareous shell (if periostracum was destroyed) plays a major role in the adsorption of actinides on ESS. Thorium (natural alpha-emitter) was used in short-term biosorption experiment with shell fragments of five bivalve mollusks. After a 72 h exposure to Th (~6 kBq L(-1)), thorium concentration was measured on ESS using laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry; the distribution and density of alpha tracks were subsequently visualized by α-track autoradiography. A trend in reduced Th concentrations on the ESS was observed depending upon the species tested: (group 1 ~4000 μg g(-1)) Chlamys islandica (M.), Mercenaria mercenaria (L.), Dreissena polymorpha (P.)>(group 2 ~1200 μg g(-1)) Crassostrea virginica (G.)≫(group 3 ~150 μg g(-1)) Mytilus edulis L. The microtopography of ESS was characterized by scanning electron microscopy revealing the high porosity of the calcareous surface of C. islandica and M. mercenaria, lamellate surface of periostracum in D. polymorpha, uneven but a weakly porous surface of periostracum of C. virginica, and a nearly smooth surface of the periostracum of M. edulis. This work has demonstrated, for the first time, the presence of a strong correlation between concentration of adsorbed Th and ESS microtopography, and the role of the periostracum in this process is discussed.

Abstract
The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of the pesticides/polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon mixture on aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR), p53 and ubiquitin mRNA level in haemocytes of Mya arenaria exposed to a mixture of chlorothalonil, mancozeb and benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) for 48 and 72 h. AhR, p53 and ubiquitin gene expression levels were quantified using quantitative Real-time PCR. For robust and accurate quantification of transcripts, suitable housekeeping genes were selected from four sets of ribosomal and elongation factors transcripts previously sequenced from Mya arenaria using geNorm open source software. Quantitative Real-time PCR data exhibited a significantly high expression of AhR after 72 h of exposure (P ≤ 0.05). p53 gene expression seems to be up-regulated by the mixture after 48 h, however not significantly; but the level of p53 mRNA is down-regulated by the xenobiotics between 48 and 72 h after exposure. This study postulates that AhR mRNA levels could be used as an indicator of the exposure of clams' haemocytes to a mixture of xenobiotics such as chlorothalonil, mancozeb and BaP. However, further studies have to be pursued in order to unravel the molecular mechanisms involved in the p53 signaling pathway.

Abstract
This study describes the morphology of inner shell surface (ISS) of the blue mussel Mytilus edulis Linnaeus after short-term exposures to radiolabeled silver in free-ionic ((110m)Ag(+)) and engineered nanoparticulate ((110m)AgNPs, <40 nm) phases. Radiolabeled silver in starting solutions was used in a similar low concentration (∼15 Bq mL(-1)) for both treatments. After exposure experiments radiolabeled silver was leached from the ISS using HCl. It concentration for shells from both treatments was ∼0.5 Bq mL(-1). Whole ISS of young individuals and prismatic layer of adults showed no evidence of any major alteration process after silver uptake. However, the nacre portion of adult mussels exposed to both treatments revealed distinct doughnut shape structures (DSS) formed by calcium carbonate micrograins that covered the surface of aragonite tablets. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) imaging revealed the existence of only minor differences in DSS morphology between mussels exposed to Ag(+) and AgNPs. From literature survey, DSS were also found in bivalves exposed to Cd(2+). The DSS occurring in a specimen of a field-collected bivalve is also shown. Formation of distinctive DSS can be explained by a disturbance of the shell calcification mechanism. Although the occurrence of DSS is not exclusively associated with metal bioavailability to the mussels, the morphology of DSS seems to be linked to the speciation of the metal used in the uptake experiments.

Abstract
Metal transport in mollusk extrapallial fluid (EPF) that acts as a "bridge" between soft tissues and shell has surprisingly received little attention until now. Using ultrafiltration and radiotracer techniques we determined silver concentrations and speciation in the EPF of the blue mussel Mytilus edulis after short-term uptake and depuration laboratory experiments. Radiolabelled silver ((¹¹⁰m)Ag) was used in dissolved or nanoparticulate phases (AgNPs < 40 nm), with a similar low Ag concentration (total radioactive and cold Ag ~0.7 μg/L) in a way that mussels could uptake radiotracers only from seawater. Our results indicated that silver nanoparticles were transported to the EPF of blue mussels at a level similar to the Ag ionic form. Bulk activity of radiolabelled silver in the EPF represented only up to 7% of the bulk activity measured in the whole mussels. The EPF extracted from mussels exposed to both treatments exhibited an Ag colloidal complexed form based on EPF ultrafiltration through a 3 kDa filter. This original study brings new insights to internal circulation of nanoparticles in living organisms and contributes to the international effort in studying the potential impacts of engineered nanomaterials on marine bivalves which play an essential role in coastal ecosystems, and are important contributors to human food supply from the sea.

Abstract
Levels of butyltin compounds, polychlorinated biphenyls, and heavy metals were analyzed in marine sediments and organisms (Notothenia coriiceps, Laternula elliptica, and Nacella concinna), each of which has a different feeding strategy, in Potter Cove, Antarctica. PCBs were lower than detection limits in all samples. Only butyltin compounds were detected in a restricted area near the scientific station. Chromium, copper, magnesium, lead (Pb), and zinc had similar behavior in the cove, probably because they are regulated by similar process and conditions. However, Pb levels in some sites of the cove seem to be related to human activities in the area. Cadmium levels were relatively low, with the highest values found close to the shoreline, which is probably influenced by seasonal streams draining waters from Potter Peninsula. Results showed that despite the fact that Jubany Station has been operating for > 50 years, surface sediment and biota from Potter Cove do not exhibit levels of pollutants representing environmental concern.

Abstract
The dynamics of total and active microbial communities were studied in seawater microcosms amended with crude or diesel oil at different temperatures (25, 10 and 4 degrees C) in the presence/absence of organic fertilization (Inipol EAP 22). Total and hydrocarbon-degrading microbes were enumerated by fluorescence microscopy and Most Probable Number (MPN) method, respectively. Total (16S rDNA-based) vs. active (16S rRNA) bacterial community structure was monitored by Capillary-Electrophoresis Single Strand Conformation Polymorphism (CE-SSCP) fingerprinting. Hydrocarbons were analyzed after 12 weeks of incubation by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Total and hydrocarbon-degrading microbial counts were highly influenced by fertilization while no important differences were observed between temperatures. Higher biodegradation levels were observed in fertilized microcosms. Temperature and fertilization induced changes in structure of total bacterial communities. However, fertilization showed a more important effect on active bacterial structure. The calculation of Simpson's diversity index showed similar trends among temperatures whereas fertilization reduced diversity index of both total and active bacterial communities.

6582 Background: Oral oncologic therapies are increasingly becoming part of treatment options for cancer. These agents often fall within the pharmacy benefit, with the potential for increased out-of-pocket (OOP) cost burden to patients. The objective of this study is to evaluate patient OOP payments for oral oncologic therapies in U.S. managed care plans. Methods: Patients aged 18+ years with 1 of 13 oral oncologics (bexarotene, capecitabine, dasatinib, erlotinib, gefitinib, imatinib, lapatinib, lenalidomide, sorafenib, sunitinib, temozolomide, thalidomide, vorinostat) were identified in 2007 from a nationally representative database of medical and pharmacy claims from over 90 U.S. health plans. OOP payments were calculated as the allowed amount (dollar amount a health plan allows for a therapy, including any member liability) minus the paid amount (dollar amount paid by a health plan for a therapy). Results: 10,400 patients with evidence of at least 1 of 13 oral oncologic therapies were identified in 2007. The mean age was 59.2 years, 48% were male, and 83% had a commercial payer; 26% of patients were diagnosed with lung cancer, 14% with breast cancer, and 13% with colorectal cancer at the time of the first evidence of therapy use in 2007. Mean and median OOP payments for the 13 oral oncologic therapies are provided in the table below. Medicare Advantage and Medicaid had higher mean OOP payments for most therapies compared to commercial payers and self-insured patients. Conclusions: This study evaluated OOP payments for oral oncologic therapies using current claims data. Among the 13 oral oncologics studied, the average OOP costs ranged from $117 to $1,014. As costs for therapy become a greater part of treatment decisions, an understanding of patient OOP costs will be critical in informing choices. [Table: see text] [Table: see text]

Abstract
A bioassay was developed to assess the toxic effects of ingested prey contaminated by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) using the teleost Fundulus heteroclitus as a predator and the polychaete Nereis virens as a benthic vector. Ten groups of nine male adult Fundulus were exposed for 21 d to 10 different diets of Nereis contaminated with benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) by spiking dead Nereis with BaP (spiked Nereis [SN] diets, 0-26 microg of BaP per gram dry wt) or by exposing living Nereis to a diet, to sediments, or to both contaminated with BaP (exposed Nereis [EN] diets, 0-16 microg/g dry wt). Another group was exposed to commercial fish food, used as reference diet. Condition and prevalence of histopathological changes were not affected. Exposure to the SN diets containing at least 3.5 microg of BaP per gram dry weight caused an induction of ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase activity in the intestine but not in the liver. In contrast, fish exposed to the highest doses (> or = 13.4 microg of BaP per gram dry wt) had increased cellular proliferation rate in the liver but not in the intestine. Quantifiable levels of free BaP tetrol-like metabolites were detected in the bile of fish exposed to diets containing more than 6.8 microg/g dry weight of BaP, and exhibited a dose-response relationship in fish exposed to SN diets. For a similar dose of BaP, EN and SN diets had similar effects. Thus, the BaP metabolic products that could have been produced in Nereis apparently did not contribute to the biomarkers responses. This bioassay can be applied to a variety of prey contaminated naturally or experimentally with PAHs. The present study supports the use of intestinal biomarkers, in addition to hepatic biomarkers, in environmental monitoring to assess the impact of dietary exposure to PAHs.

Abstract
The aetiology of haemic neoplasia (HN) is unknown, so far but many causative factors are suggested such as viral, pollution and genetics. The aim of this study was to determine if, under chronic exposure, two major pesticides (chlorothalonil and mancozeb) which are used in potato production could induce HN in soft-shell clams (Mya arenaria). Short-term experiments with acute exposure were also performed. Clams were collected from an epizootic site (North River, PEI) and from a site free of the disease (Magdalen Islands, Quebec). The tetraploid level of haemocytes was assessed by flow cytometry for each clam to determine the HN status. The bioaccumulation of pesticides in tissues was quantified by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) for chlorothalonil while mancozeb and manganese were quantified by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometer (ICP/MS). Long term exposure to fungicide Bravo 500((R)) did not induce high tetraploid levels on negative calm from North River and the analysis of the digestive gland and the mantle did not reveal any detectable level of chlorothalonil. In the Manzate 200 DF((R)), some clams revealed high level of tetraploid cells but no difference were observed between the treatments and the control. The analysis of the digestive gland and the mantle for manganese did not highlight any significant difference in tissue concentration (p=0.05). For the acute exposure, chlorothalonil analysis showed that the active ingredient is distributed between four chlorinated compounds: 99.5% for chlorothalonil isomers, 0.4% for pentachlorothalonil and 0.1% for trichlorothalonil isomers. For a 72 h experiment, the accumulation was within 4h; the higher tissue concentration of chlorothalonil was 59.2 microg g(-1) in the mantle after 48 h, following by a decrease to an undetectable level at the end. For the manganese, the accumulation was detected after 4h; the higher tissue concentration was 48.8 microg g(-1) in the mantle after 24h and, over the following 48 h, the accumulation decreased until the end of the trial. Based on the data, the accumulation of these fungicides seems to be transitory. Chlorothalonil and mancozeb are both oxidative-stress promoters and could have induced cell dysfunction while in the tissue. Study on the effect of these fungicides on the p53 protein system is an example of strategy that would provide information on cellular events promoting neoplasia.

Abstract
Background The aim of this research was to investigate oxidative stress and immune responses following a dietary polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) exposure in a marine bioindicator organism, the soft shell clam, Mya arenaria. Immune parameters in hemolymph (haemocyte number, efficiency of phagocytosis and haemocyte activity) and assessment of oxidative stress using catalase (CAT) activity and levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) performed on the digestive gland were estimated as biomarkers in clams fed in mesocosm with PAH contaminated phytoplankton. MDA levels and CAT activities were also measured in situ in organisms sampled in a control site (Metis Beach, Québec, Canada) as well as organisms sampled in a site receiving domestic effluents (Pointe-au-Père, Québec, Canada), to assess effects of abiotic variables related to seasonal variations and mixed contamination on the selected parameters. Results Results on immune parameters suggest that the PAHs may interfere with the maturation and/or differentiation processes of haemocytes. MDA results showed that lipid peroxidation did not occur following the exposure. The levels of CAT activity corresponded to weak antioxidant activity (no significant differences). Recovery was noted for all the immune endpoints at the end of the experiment. Conclusion Results suggest that immune parameters are early biomarkers that can efficiently detect a physiological change during a short term exposure to low concentrations of PAHs. The in situ survey (in the natural environment) suggested that clams from the Pointe-au-Père site did not show any oxidative stress as well as the clams contaminated in mesocosm, probably due to the low concentrations of PAHs used for this study. MDA levels increased however in organisms from Metis Beach, a response probably related to domestic effluents or parasitism.

Abstract
The widespread environmental contamination, bioaccumulation and endocrine disruptor effects of butyltins (BTs) to wildlife are well documented. Although suspected, potential effects of BTs exposure on the immune system of marine mammals have been little investigated. In this study, we assessed the effects of tributyltin (TBT) and its dealkylated metabolites dibutyltin (DBT) and monobutyltin (MBT) on the immune responses of harbour seals. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells isolated from pup and adult harbour seals were exposed in vitro to varying concentrations of BTs. DBT resulted in a significant decrease at 100 and 200 nM of phagocytotic activity and reduced significantly phagocytic efficiency at 200 nM in adult seals. There was no effect in phagocytosis with TBT and MBT. In pups, the highest concentration (200 nM) of DBT inhibited phagocytic efficiency. A reduction of tumor-killing capacity of adult natural killer (NK) cells occurred when leukocytes were incubated in vitro with 50 nM DBT and 200 nM TBT for 24h. In adult seals, T-lymphocyte proliferation was significantly suppressed when the cells were exposed to 200 nM TBT and 100 nM DBT. In pups, the proliferative response increased after an exposure to 100 nM TBT and 50 nM DBT, but decreased with 200 nM TBT and 100 nM DBT. The immune functions were more affected by BTs exposure in adults than in pups, suggesting that other unsuspected mechanisms could trigger immune parameters in pups. The toxic potential of BTs followed the order of DBT>TBT>MBT. BT concentrations of harbour seal pups from the St. Lawrence Estuary (Bic National Park) ranged between 0.1-0.4 ng Sn/g wet weight (ww) and 1.2-13.4 ng Sn/g ww in blood and blubber, respectively. For these animals, DBT concentrations were consistently below the quantification limit of 0.04 ng Sn/g ww in blood and 0.2 ng Sn/g ww in blubber. Results suggest that concentrations measured in pups are considered too low to induce toxic effects to their immune system during first days of life. However, based on our in vitro results, we hypothesize that BTs, and DBT in particular, could pose a serious threat to the immune functions in free-ranging harbour seal adults.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to test the efficiency of passive solid samplers, polyoxymethylene (POM) strips and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) silicon tubing, to predict the bioavailability of native PAHs in contaminated sediments. Results were compared with worm bioaccumulation data and solid/liquid extraction using the surfactant Brij((R)) 700 (B700). The two passive samplers were found to act differently. The PDMS sampler overestimated the availability of PAHs in all studied sediments. The POM method provided results in accordance with those obtained with the B700 extraction. However, POM and B700 methods underestimated PAH availability in low contaminated sediments where biological factors (digestible organic matter) become important. Bioavailability of total PAHs was correctly predicted by POM and B700 in highly contaminated aluminum smelter sediments. A closer examination of individual PAH results indicated that both techniques overestimated the availability of large molecules with logK(ow)>6 suggesting a biological mechanism limiting uptake of larger PAHs which seems to be related to the molecular size of compounds.

Abstract
Methylmercury is a potent toxic present in Amazonian fish species due to gold mining activities. In the present work, we investigated the morphological effects of methylmercury in liver and kidney of Hoplias malabaricus feeding contaminated prey fish over 70 days. Two groups of nine mature fish (tested and control) were acclimatized for four weeks to laboratory conditions and then the tested group fed prey fish previously contaminated at an additional level of 0.075 microg MeHg g(-1) at 5-day intervals and over 14 successive intervals whereas control group fed uncontaminated fish. H. malabaricus specimens were then dissected for chemical and morphological analyses. The low and realistic level of MeHg in the prey fish induced a low increase of total mercury in liver (1.8-fold) and muscle (2.2-fold). The biomagnification factor (Hg in predator/Hg in prey) reached 142 in liver and 21 in muscle and was indicative of a relatively fast contamination of internal organs by dietary exposure. The liver of exposed individuals presented leukocyte infiltration, increased number of melano-macrophage centers, necrotic areas and lesions in Disse's space. Evident disorder and chaos in cytoskeleton organization suggest a strong toxic effect in hepatocytes, such as organelles positioning and movement, vesicles traffic and secretion. Head kidney showed large necrosis areas, increased number of melano-macrophages centers, phagocytic areas, intercellular space among parenquimal cells and atypical cells. Injuries and damages to tissues suggest too slow defense mechanisms to immobilize or eliminate ingested methylmercury, demonstrating that the sensitivity of fish cells to methylmercury exposure is higher than it has been previously described in the literature.

Abstract
Although Antarctica is still considered as one of the most pristine areas of the world, the growing tourist and fisheries activities as well as scientific operations and their related logistic support are responsible for an increasing level of pollutants in this fragile environment. Soils and coastal sediments are significantly affected near scientific stations particularly by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). In this work sediment and soil were sampled in two consecutive summer Antarctic expeditions at Potter Cove and peninsula, in the vicinity of Jubany Station (South Shetland Islands). Two- and 3-ring PAHs (methylnaphthalene, fluorene, phenanthrene and anthracene) were the main compounds found in most sites, although total PAH concentrations showed relatively low levels compared with other human-impacted areas in Antarctica. Pattern distribution of PAHs observed in samples suggested that low-temperature combustion processes such as diesel motor combustion and open-field garbage burning are the main sources of these compounds. An increase in PAH concentrations was observed from surface to depth into the active soil layer except for a unique sampling site where a fuel spill had been recently reported and where an inverted PAH concentration gradient was observed. The highest level was detected in the upper layer of permafrost followed by a sharp decrease in depth, showing this layer is acting as a barrier for downward PAH migration. When PAH levels in soil from both sampling programs were compared a significant decrease (p<0.01) was observed in summer 2005 (range at 75-cm depth: 12+/-1-153+/-22 ng/g) compared to summer 2004 (range at 75-cm depth: 162+/-15-1182+/-113 ng/g) whereas concentrations in surface sediment collected nearby the station PAHs increased drastically in 2005 (range: 36+/-3-1908+/-114 ng/g) compared to 2004 (range: 28+/-3-312+/-24 ng/g). Precipitation regime and water run off suggest that an important wash out of soil-PAHs occurred during the interval time between samplings. Results showed that the present PAH contamination level of Jubany Station is relatively low compared to other reported cases in Antarctica but also suggests that an increase in rain and in thawing processes caused by the global warming could result in an important soil-associated PAH mobilization with unpredictable consequences for the biota of Potter Cove.

Abstract
In coastal ecosystems, denitrification is a key process in removing excess dissolved nitrogen oxides and participating in the control of eutrophication process. Little is known about the role of salt marshes on nitrogen budgets in cold weather coastal areas. Although coastal salt marshes are important sites for organic matter degradation and nutrient regeneration, bacterial-mediated nitrogen cycling processes, such as denitrification, remain unknown in northern and sub-arctic regions, especially under winter conditions. Using labelled nitrogen (15N), denitrification rates were measured in an eastern Canadian salt marsh in August, October and December 2005. Freshly sampled undisturbed sediment cores were incubated over 8h and maintained at their sampling temperatures to evaluate the influence of low temperatures on the denitrification rate. From 2 to 12 degrees C, average denitrification rate and dissolved oxygen consumption increased from 9.6 to 25.5 micromol N2 m-2 h-1 and from 1.3 to 1.8 mmol O2 m-2 h-1, respectively, with no statistical dependence of temperature (p>0.05). Nitrification has been identified as the major nitrate source for denitrification, supplying more than 80% of the nitrate demand. Because no more than 31% of the nitrate removed by sediment is estimated to be denitrified, the presence of a major nitrate sink in sediment is suspected. Among possible nitrate consumption mechanisms, dissimilatory reduction of nitrate to ammonium, metal and organic matter oxidation processes are discussed. Providing the first measurements of denitrification rate in a St. Lawrence Estuary salt marsh, this study evidences the necessity of preserving and restoring marshes. They constitute an efficient geochemical filter against an excess of nitrate dispersion to coastal waters even under cold northern conditions.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) on the physiological status of the bivalve Mya arenaria. Specimens were exposed to four different sources of PAHs: aluminium smelter soot, sediment from an industrial discharge pound, charcoal fine particles and dietary PAHs assessed by feeding clams with phytoplankton freshly impregnated with dissolved PAHs. The exposure period lasted 30 days and bivalves were let to recover for an additional 20 days. At days 8, 15, 30 and 50, immune parameters (phagocytic activity and efficiency) were monitored in haemocytes. Oxidative stress measures such as catalase and lipid peroxidation were quantified in digestive gland as well as concentrations of bioaccumulated PAHs. In a second experiment, clams were exposed to [(14)C]-pyrene via the phytoplankton, and the tissue distribution of radiolabelled compound was studied. Glycogen levels in gonad and digestive gland were also measured and gametogenesis stages were investigated. Results showed a high bioaccumulation in clams exposed to dietary PAHs and contaminated sediments. Tissue distribution of [(14)C]-pyrene revealed that the radiolabelled compound persisted mainly in the gonad during 14 days. A decrease of phagocytosis was observed in contaminated male clams. The lipid peroxidation (malondialdehyde) was found to increase in the digestive gland tissues of clams exposed to dietary PAHs, smelter soot and discharge, but no differences were observed in the catalase activity. A delay in gametogenesis occurred in all exposed males and in females contaminated with coke dust and dietary PAHs. Males were more sensitive than females to PAH exposure. A dysfunction in steroid synthesis is suspected to occur due to the exposure to all sources of PAHs.

Abstract
Neotropical fish traíra (Hoplias malabaricus) were used to investigate the effects of dietary doses of metals through individual exposures to either inorganic lead(II) or methylmercury, respectively, 21 microg Pb2+g(-1) w.w. and 75 ng H(3)C-Hg+g(-1) w.w., every 5 days, for 70 days (14 doses). The erythrocyte delta-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase (ALAd) activity was inhibited after 14 doses of Pb2+ and H(3)C-Hg+. The muscle cholinesterase (ChE) activity was inhibited after 14 doses of H(3)C-Hg+. Damage in cytoskeleton and nuclei were observed after exposure to inorganic lead. Individuals exposed to H(3)C-Hg+ showed the presence of atypical granules and vesicles, cytoplasm disorganization, and mitochondria damages in hepatocytes also after 14 doses. The present results demonstrate that erythrocyte ALAd and muscle ChE activities can be used as long-term biomarkers of sublethal, subchronic, and trophic exposures to Pb2+, and H(3)C-Hg+ in fish. Also the morphological aspects described in the present work confirm the toxicity of both studied metals.

Abstract
High temperature carbon oxidation in primary aluminum smelters results in the release of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) into the environment. The main source of PAH are the anodes, which are composed of petroleum coke (black carbon, BC) and coal tar pitch. To elucidate the dominant carbonaceous phase controlling the environmental fate of PAH in aluminum smelter residues (coke BC and/or coal tar), the sorptive behavior of PAHs has been determined, using passive samplers and infinitesink desorption methods. Samples directly from the wet scrubber were studied as well as ones from an adjacent 20-year old storage lagoon and roof dust from the smelter. Carbon-normalized distribution coefficients of native PAHs were 2 orders of magnitude higher than expected based on amorphous organic carbon (AOC)/water partitioning, which is in the same order of magnitude as reported literature values for soots and charcoals. Sorption isotherms of laboratory-spiked deuterated phenanthrene showed strong (-100 times stronger than AOC) but nonetheless linear sorption in both fresh and aged aluminum smelter residues. The absence of nonlinear behavior typical for adsorption to BC indicates that PAH sorption in aluminum smelter residues is dominated by absorption into the semi-solid coal tar pitch matrix. Desorption experiments using Tenax showed that fresh smelter residues had a relatively large rapidly desorbing fraction of PAH (35-50%), whereas this fraction was strongly reduced (11-16%) in the lagoon and roof dust material. Weathering of the coal tar residue and/or redistribution of PAH between coal tar and BC phases could explain the reduced availability in aged samples.
