Unlocking room-temperature bistable spin transition at the nanoscale: the synthesis of core@shell [Fe(NH2trz)3(NO3)2]@SiO2 nanoparticles

In this work, we address the synthesis of stable spin-crossover nanoparticles capable of undergoing a hysteretic spin transition at room temperature. For this purpose, we use the reverse-micelle protocol to prepare naked [Fe(NH2trz)3](NO3)2 and core@shell [Fe(NH2trz)3](NO3)2@SiO2 nanoparticles. Through meticulous adjustment of synthetic parameters, we achieved nanoparticle sizes ranging from approximately 40 nm to 60 nm. Our findings highlight that [Fe(NH2trz)3](NO3)2 presents a modest thermal hysteresis of 7 K, which decreases by downsizing. Conversely, silica-coated nanoparticles with sizes of ca. 60 and 40 nm demonstrate a remarkable hysteretic response of approximately 30 K, switching their spin state around room temperature. Moreover, the presence of a SiO2 shell substantially enhances the nanoparticles' stability against oxidation. In this context, the larger 60 nm [Fe(NH2trz)3](NO3)2@SiO2 hybrid remains stable in water for up to two hours, enabling the observation of an unreported water-induced spin transition after 30 min. Therefore, this work also introduces an intriguing avenue for inducing spin transitions through solvent exchange, underscoring the versatility and potential of these nanoparticles.

Atomic Force Microscopy beyond Topography: Chemical Sensing of 2D Material Surfaces through Adhesion Measurements

Developing new functionalities of two-dimensional materials (2Dms) can be achieved by their chemical modification with a broad spectrum of molecules. This functionalization is commonly studied by using spectroscopies such as Raman, IR, or XPS, but the detection limit is a common problem. In addition, these methods lack detailed spatial resolution and cannot provide information about the homogeneity of the coating. Atomic force microscopy (AFM), on the other hand, allows the study of 2Dms on the nanoscale with excellent lateral resolution. AFM has been extensively used for topographic analysis; however, it is also a powerful tool for evaluating other properties far beyond topography such as mechanical ones. Therefore, herein, we show how AFM adhesion mapping of transition metal chalcogenide 2Dms (i.e., MnPS3 and MoS2) permits a close inspection of the surface chemical properties. Moreover, the analysis of adhesion as relative values allows a simple and robust strategy to distinguish between bare and functionalized layers and significantly improves the reproducibility between measurements. Remarkably, it is also confirmed by statistical analysis that adhesion values do not depend on the thickness of the layers, proving that they are related only to the most superficial part of the materials. In addition, we have implemented an unsupervised classification method using k-means clustering, an artificial intelligence-based algorithm, to automatically classify samples based on adhesion values. These results demonstrate the potential of simple adhesion AFM measurements to inspect the chemical nature of 2Dms and may have implications for the broad scientific community working in the field.

Nonvolatile Electric Control of Antiferromagnet CrSBr

van der Waals magnets are emerging as a promising material platform for electric field control of magnetism, offering a pathway toward the elimination of external magnetic fields from spintronic devices. A further step is the integration of such magnets with electrical gating components that would enable nonvolatile control of magnetic states. However, this approach remains unexplored for antiferromagnets, despite their growing significance in spintronics. Here, we demonstrate nonvolatile electric field control of magnetoelectric characteristics in van der Waals antiferromagnet CrSBr. We integrate a CrSBr channel in a flash-memory architecture featuring charge trapping graphene multilayers. The electrical gate operation triggers a nonvolatile 200% change in the antiferromagnetic state of CrSBr resistance by manipulating electron accumulation/depletion. Moreover, the nonvolatile gate modulates the metamagnetic transition field of CrSBr and the magnitude of magnetoresistance. Our findings highlight the potential of manipulating magnetic properties of antiferromagnetic semiconductors in a nonvolatile way.

Multistep magnetization switching in orthogonally twisted ferromagnetic monolayers

The advent of twist engineering in two-dimensional crystals enables the design of van der Waals heterostructures with emergent properties. In the case of magnets, this approach can afford artificial antiferromagnets with tailored spin arrangements. Here we fabricate an orthogonally twisted bilayer by twisting two CrSBr ferromagnetic monolayers with an easy-axis in-plane spin anisotropy by 90°. The magnetotransport properties reveal multistep magnetization switching with a magnetic hysteresis opening, which is absent in the pristine case. By tuning the magnetic field, we modulate the remanent state and coercivity and select between hysteretic and non-hysteretic magnetoresistance scenarios. This complexity pinpoints spin anisotropy as a key aspect in twisted magnetic superlattices. Our results highlight control over the magnetic properties in van der Waals heterostructures, leading to a variety of field-induced phenomena and opening a fruitful playground for creating desired magnetic symmetries and manipulating non-collinear magnetic configurations.

Tunable Charge Transport and Spin Dynamics in Two-Dimensional Conjugated Metal-Organic Frameworks

Two-dimensional conjugated metal-organic frameworks (2D c-MOFs) have attracted increasing interest in electronics due to their (semi)conducting properties. Charge-neutral 2D c-MOFs also possess persistent organic radicals that can be viewed as spin-concentrated arrays, affording new opportunities for spintronics. However, the strong π-interaction between neighboring layers of layer-stacked 2D c-MOFs annihilates active spin centers and significantly accelerates spin relaxation, severely limiting their potential as spin qubits. Herein, we report the precise tuning of the charge transport and spin dynamics in 2D c-MOFs via the control of interlayer stacking. The introduction of bulky side groups on the conjugated ligands enables a significant dislocation of the 2D c-MOFs layers from serrated stacking to staggered stacking, thereby spatially weakening the interlayer interactions. As a consequence, the electrical conductivity of 2D c-MOFs decreases by 6 orders of magnitude, while the spin density achieves more than a 30-fold increase and the spin-lattice relaxation time (T1) is increased up to ∼60 μs, hence being superior to the reference 2D c-MOFs with compact stackings whose spin relaxation is too fast to be detected. Spin dynamics results also reveal that spinless polaron pairs or bipolarons play critical roles in the charge transport of these 2D c-MOFs. Our strategy provides a bottom-up approach for enlarging spin dynamics in 2D c-MOFs, opening up pathways for developing MOF-based spintronics.

Bistable Spin-Crossover Nanoparticles for Molecular Electronics

The field of spin-crossover complexes is rapidly evolving from the study of the spin transition phenomenon to its exploitation in molecular electronics. Such spin transition is gradual in a single-molecule, while in bulk it can be abrupt, showing sometimes thermal hysteresis and thus a memory effect. A convenient way to keep this bistability while reducing the size of the spin-crossover material is to process it as nanoparticles (NPs). Here, the most recent advances in the chemical design of these NPs and their integration into electronic devices, paying particular attention to optimizing the switching ratio are reviewed. Then, integrating spin-crossover NPs over 2D materials is focused to improve the endurance, performance, and detection of the spin state in these hybrid devices.

Magnetic order in 2D antiferromagnets revealed by spontaneous anisotropic magnetostriction

The temperature dependent order parameter provides important information on the nature of magnetism. Using traditional methods to study this parameter in two-dimensional (2D) magnets remains difficult, however, particularly for insulating antiferromagnetic (AF) compounds. Here, we show that its temperature dependence in AF MPS3 (M(II) = Fe, Co, Ni) can be probed via the anisotropy in the resonance frequency of rectangular membranes, mediated by a combination of anisotropic magnetostriction and spontaneous staggered magnetization. Density functional calculations followed by a derived orbital-resolved magnetic exchange analysis confirm and unravel the microscopic origin of this magnetization-induced anisotropic strain. We further show that the temperature and thickness dependent order parameter allows to deduce the material's critical exponents characterising magnetic order. Nanomechanical sensing of magnetic order thus provides a future platform to investigate 2D magnetism down to the single-layer limit.

Design and Processing as Ultrathin Films of a Sublimable Iron(II) Spin Crossover Material Exhibiting Efficient and Fast Light-Induced Spin Transition

Materials based on spin crossover (SCO) molecules have centered the attention in molecular magnetism for more than 40 years as they provide unique examples of multifunctional and stimuli-responsive materials, which can be then integrated into electronic devices to exploit their molecular bistability. This process often requires the preparation of thermally stable SCO molecules that can sublime and remain intact in contact with surfaces. However, the number of robust sublimable SCO molecules is still very scarce. Here, we report a novel example of this kind. It is based on a neutral iron(II) coordination complex formulated as [Fe(neoim)2], where neoimH is the ionogenic ligand 2-(1H-imidazol-2-yl)-9-methyl-1,10-phenanthroline. In the first part, a comprehensive study, which covers the synthesis and magnetostructural characterization of the [Fe(neoim)2] complex as a bulk microcrystalline material, is reported. Then, in the second part, we investigate the suitability of this material to form thin films through high-vacuum sublimation. Finally, the retainment of all present SCO capabilities in the bulk when the material is processed is thoroughly studied by means of X-ray absorption spectroscopy. In particular, a very efficient and fast light-induced spin transition (LIESST effect) has been observed, even for ultrathin films of 15 nm.

Local control of superconductivity in a NbSe2/CrSBr van der Waals heterostructure

Two-dimensional magnets and superconductors are emerging as tunable building-blocks for quantum computing and superconducting spintronic devices, and have been used to fabricate all two-dimensional versions of traditional devices, such as Josephson junctions. However, novel devices enabled by unique features of two-dimensional materials have not yet been demonstrated. Here, we present NbSe2/CrSBr van der Waals superconducting spin valves that exhibit infinite magnetoresistance and nonreciprocal charge transport. These responses arise from a unique metamagnetic transition in CrSBr, which controls the presence of localized stray fields suitably oriented to suppress the NbSe2 superconductivity in nanoscale regions and to break time reversal symmetry. Moreover, by integrating different CrSBr crystals in a lateral heterostructure, we demonstrate a superconductive spin valve characterized by multiple stable resistance states. Our results show how the unique physical properties of layered materials enable the realization of high-performance quantum devices based on novel working principles.

Magnetic Imaging and Domain Nucleation in CrSBr Down to the 2D Limit

Recent advancements in 2D materials have revealed the potential of van der Waals magnets, and specifically of their magnetic anisotropy that allows applications down to the 2D limit. Among these materials, CrSBr has emerged as a promising candidate, because its intriguing magnetic and electronic properties have appeal for both fundamental and applied research in spintronics or magnonics. In this work, nano-SQUID-on-tip (SOT) microscopy is used to obtain direct magnetic imaging of CrSBr flakes with thicknesses ranging from monolayer (N = 1) to few-layer (N = 5). The ferromagnetic order is preserved down to the monolayer, while the antiferromagnetic coupling of the layers starts from the bilayer case. For odd layers, at zero applied magnetic field, the stray field resulting from the uncompensated layer is directly imaged. The progressive spin reorientation along the out-of-plane direction (hard axis) is also measured with a finite applied magnetic field, allowing evaluation of the anisotropy constant, which remains stable down to the monolayer and is close to the bulk value. Finally, by selecting the applied magnetic field protocol, the formation of Néel magnetic domain walls is observed down to the single-layer limit.

Hybrid Heterostructures of a Spin Crossover Coordination Polymer on MoS2 : Elucidating the Role of the 2D Substrate

Controlling the deposition of spin-crossover (SCO) materials constitutes a crucial step for the integration of these bistable molecular systems in electronic devices. Moreover, the influence of functional surfaces, such as 2D materials, can be determinant on the properties of the deposited SCO film. In this work, ultrathin films of the SCO Hofmann-type coordination polymer [Fe(py)2 {Pt(CN)4 }] (py = pyridine) onto monolayers of 1T and 2H MoS2 polytypes are grown. The resulting hybrid heterostructures are characterized by GIXRD, XAS, XPS, and EXAFS to get information on the structure and the specific interactions generated at the interface, as well as on the spin transition. The use of a layer-by-layer results in SCO/2D heterostructures, with crystalline and well-oriented [Fe(py)2 {Pt(CN)4 }]. Unlike with conventional Au or SiO2 substrates, no intermediate self-assembled monolayer is required, thanks to the surface S atoms. Furthermore, it is observed that the higher presence of Fe3+ in the 2H heterostructures hinders an effective spin transition for [Fe(py)2 {Pt(CN)4 }] films thinner than 8 nm. Remarkably, when using 1T MoS2 , this transition is preserved in films as thin as 4 nm, due to the reducing character of this metallic substrate. These results highlight the active role that 2D materials play as substrates in hybrid molecular/2D heterostructures.

Thermo-Magnetostrictive Effect for Driving Antiferromagnetic Two-Dimensional Material Resonators

Magnetostrictive coupling has recently attracted interest as a sensitive method for studying magnetism in two-dimensional (2D) materials by mechanical means. However, its application in high-frequency magnetic actuators and transducers requires rapid modulation of the magnetic order, which is difficult to achieve with external magnets, especially when dealing with antiferromagnets. Here, we optothermally modulate the magnetization in antiferromagnetic 2D material membranes of metal phosphor trisulfides (MPS3), to induce a large high-frequency magnetostrictive driving force. From the analysis of the temperature-dependent resonance amplitude, we provide evidence that the force is due to a thermo-magnetostrictive effect, which significantly increases near the Neél temperature, due to the strong temperature dependence of the magnetization. By studying its angle dependence, we find the effect is observed to follow anisotropic magnetostriction of the crystal lattice. The results show that the thermo-magnetostrictive effect results in a strongly enhanced thermal expansion force near the critical temperature of magnetostrictive 2D materials, which can enable more efficient actuation of nano-magnetomechanical devices and can also provide a route for studying the high-frequency coupling among magnetic, mechanical, and thermodynamic degrees of freedom down to the 2D limit.

Interplay between Optical Emission and Magnetism in the van der Waals Magnetic Semiconductor CrSBr in the Two-Dimensional Limit

The van der Waals semiconductor metamagnet CrSBr offers an ideal platform for studying the interplay between optical and magnetic properties in the two-dimensional limit. Here, we carried out an exhaustive optical characterization of this material by means of temperature- and magnetic-field-dependent photoluminescence (PL) on flakes of different thicknesses down to the monolayer. We found a characteristic emission peak that is quenched upon switching the ferromagnetic layers from an antiparallel to a parallel configuration and exhibits a temperature dependence different from that of the peaks commonly ascribed to excitons. The contribution of this peak to the PL is boosted around 30-40 K, coinciding with the hidden order magnetic transition temperature. Our findings reveal the connection between the optical and magnetic properties via the ionization of magnetic donor vacancies. This behavior enables a useful tool for the optical reading of the magnetic states in atomically thin layers of CrSBr and shows the potential of the design of 2D heterostructures with magnetic and excitonic properties.

Effect of Nonconstituent Additive Ions on the Controlled Crystallization of Lanthanide-Based Preyssler Polyoxometalates

Preyssler-type polyoxometalates (POMs) encapsulating lanthanide ions have been shown to provide ideal examples of single-molecule magnets and spin-qubits. However, the advances in this area are limited by the quality and size of the crystals. In this work, the role of additives ions in the crystallization of these POMs from aqueous solutions has been investigated. More specifically, we have studied the influence of Al³⁺, Y³⁺, and In³⁺ on the crystallization process of K₁₂[MP₅W₃₀O₁₁₀] (where M = Gd and Y). The results show that the concentration of these ions in the solution plays an important role in controlling the crystallization rate of the grown POM crystals leading to a significant increase in their size, while showing very little or no tendency to be incorporated into the structure. This has allowed us to obtain pure Gd or Y crystals, as well as diluted magnetic crystals formed by the diamagnetic Y³⁺ POM doped with the magnetic Gd³⁺ ion.

A quantum spin liquid candidate isolated in a two-dimensional CoIIRhIII bimetallic oxalate network

A quantum spin liquid (QSL) is an elusive state of matter characterized by the absence of long-range magnetic order, even at zero temperature, and by the presence of exotic quasiparticle excitations. In spite of their relevance for quantum communication, topological quantum computation and the understanding of strongly correlated systems, like high-temperature superconductors, the unequivocal experimental identification of materials behaving as QSLs remains challenging. Here, we present a novel 2D heterometallic oxalate complex formed by high-spin Co(ii) ions alternating with diamagnetic Rh(iii) in a honeycomb lattice. This complex meets the key requirements to become a QSL: a spin ½ ground state for Co(ii), determined by spin-orbit coupling and crystal field, a magnetically-frustrated triangular lattice due to the presence of antiferromagnetic correlations, strongly suppressed direct exchange interactions and the presence of equivalent interfering superexchange paths between Co centres. A combination of electronic paramagnetic resonance, specific heat and ac magnetic susceptibility measurements in a wide range of frequencies and temperatures shows the presence of strong antiferromagnetic correlations concomitant with no signs of magnetic ordering down to 15 mK. These results show that bimetallic oxalates are appealing QSL candidates as well as versatile systems to chemically fine tune key aspects of a QSL, like magnetic frustration and superexchange path geometries.

Iron(II) Complexes of 2,6-Di[4-(ethylcarboxy)pyrazol-1-yl]pyridine with Reversible Guest-Modulated Spin-Crossover Behavior

Three solvatomorphs of the iron(II) complex of 2,6-di[4-(ethylcarboxy)pyrazol-1-yl]pyridine (bpCOOEt₂p) of formulas [Fe(bpCOOEt₂p)₂](ClO₄)₂·1.5MeNO₂ (1), [Fe(bpCOOEt₂p)₂](ClO₄)₂·MeNO₂ (2), and [Fe(bpCOOEt₂p)₂](ClO₄)₂·2MeNO₂ (3) have been prepared and characterized. They show interesting spin-crossover (SCO) properties ranging from partial to complete thermal spin transitions and a light-induced excited spin-state trapping (LIESST) effect. In solvatomorph 2, a robust structure is formed with channels that enable the entrance or removal of solvent molecules by vapor diffusion without losing the crystallinity. Thus, solvent-exchanged samples [Fe(bpCOOEt₂p)₂](ClO₄)₂·MeNO₂ (2·MeNO ₂ ), [Fe(bpCOOEt₂p)₂](ClO₄)₂·MeCN (2·MeCN), [Fe(bpCOOEt₂p)₂](ClO₄)₂·0.5Me₂CO (2·Me ₂ CO), and [Fe(bpCOOEt₂p)₂](ClO₄)₂·MeCOOH (2·MeCOOH) were prepared by vapor diffusion of the solvents in a crystal of the compound previously heated to 400 K in a single-crystal to single-crystal (SCSC) fashion. Interestingly, this causes a change of spin state with a stabilization of the low-spin state in 2·Me ₂ CO and the high-spin state in 2·MeCN. Therefore, the SCO properties of 2 can be tuned in a reversible way by exposure to different solvents.

Redox and guest tunable spin-crossover properties in a polymeric polyoxometalate

A bifunctionalized polyoxometalate (POM), [V6O19(C16H15N6O)2]2-, which contains a redox active hexavanadate moiety covalently linked to two tridentate 2,6-bis(pyrazol-1-yl)pyridine (1-bpp) ligands, has been prepared and characterized. Reaction of this hybrid molecule with Fe(ii) or Zn(ii) ions produces crystalline neutral 1D networks of formula Fe[V6O19(C16H15N6O)2]·solv (2) and Zn[V6O19(C16H15N6O)2]·solv (3) (solv = solvent molecules). Magnetic properties of 2 show an abrupt spin-crossover (SCO) with the temperature, which can be induced by light irradiation at 10 K (Light-Induced Excited Spin-State Trapping, LIESST effect). Interestingly, this porous and flexible structure enables reversible exchange of solvents in 2, which allows tuning the temperature of the thermal SCO. In 2 and 3, the hexavanadate unit can be reduced by electrochemical or chemical means in a reversible way. Chemical reduction and reoxidation by a postsynthetic method is accompanied by the insertion in the structure of the reductant and oxidant molecules (cobaltocene and tribromide, respectively), which provokes drastic changes in the spin state of Fe(ii). This leads to an elegant switching multifunctional material in which SCO properties of the Fe(ii) complexes coexist with the redox properties of the POM and can be tuned by a variety of stimuli such as temperature, light, solvent exchange or electron transfer. During the reduction process, 3 undergoes a single-crystal-to-single-crystal one-electron reduction, which confirms the presence of cobaltocenium cations by single crystal X-ray diffraction.

Tweaking the Optoelectronic Properties of S-Doped Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons by Chemical Oxidation

Peri-thiaxanthenothiaxanthene, an S-doped analog of peri-xanthenoxanthene, is used as a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) scaffold to tune the molecular semiconductor properties by editing the oxidation state of the S-atoms. Chemical oxidation of peri-thiaxanthenothiaxanthene with H₂ O₂ led to the relevant sulfoxide and sulfone congeners, whereas electrooxidation gave access to sulfonium-type derivatives forming crystalline mixed valence (MV) complexes. These complexes depicted peculiar molecular and solid-state arrangements with face-to-face π-π stacking organization. Photophysical studies showed a widening of the optical bandgap upon progressive oxidation of the S-atoms, with the bis-sulfone derivative displaying the largest value (E₀₀ =2.99 eV). While peri-thiaxanthenothiaxanthene showed reversible oxidation properties, the sulfoxide and sulfone derivatives mainly showed reductive events, corroborating their n-type properties. Electric measurements of single crystals of the MV complexes exhibited a semiconducting behavior with a remarkably high conductivity at room temperature (10^-1 -10^-2  S cm^-1 and 10^-2 -10^-3  S cm^-1 for the O and S derivatives, respectively), one of the highest reported so far. Finally, the electroluminescence properties of the complexes were tested in light-emitting electrochemical cells (LECs), obtaining the first S-doped mid-emitting PAH-based LECs.

Controlling Magnetism with Light in a Zero Orbital Angular Momentum Antiferromagnet

Antiferromagnetic materials feature intrinsic ultrafast spin dynamics, making them ideal candidates for future magnonic devices operating at THz frequencies. A major focus of current research is the investigation of optical methods for the efficient generation of coherent magnons in antiferromagnetic insulators. In magnetic lattices endowed with orbital angular momentum, spin-orbit coupling enables spin dynamics through the resonant excitation of low-energy electric dipoles such as phonons and orbital resonances which interact with spins. However, in magnetic systems with zero orbital angular momentum, microscopic pathways for the resonant and low-energy optical excitation of coherent spin dynamics are lacking. Here, we consider experimentally the relative merits of electronic and vibrational excitations for the optical control of zero orbital angular momentum magnets, focusing on a limit case: the antiferromagnet manganese phosphorous trisulfide (MnPS_{3}), constituted by orbital singlet Mn^{2+} ions. We study the correlation of spins with two types of excitations within its band gap: a bound electron orbital excitation from the singlet orbital ground state of Mn^{2+} into an orbital triplet state, which causes coherent spin precession, and a vibrational excitation of the crystal field that causes thermal spin disorder. Our findings cast orbital transitions as key targets for magnetic control in insulators constituted by magnetic centers of zero orbital angular momentum.

Ultrafast Coherent THz Lattice Dynamics Coupled to Spins in the van der Waals Antiferromagnet FePS3

Coherent THz optical lattice and hybridized phonon-magnon modes are triggered by femtosecond laser pulses in the antiferromagnetic van der Waals semiconductor FePS₃ . The laser-driven lattice and spin dynamics are investigated in a bulk crystal as well as in a 380 nm-thick exfoliated flake as a function of the excitation photon energy, sample temperature and applied magnetic field. The pump-probe magneto-optical measurements reveal that the amplitude of a coherent phonon mode oscillating at 3.2 THz decreases as the sample is heated up to the Néel temperature. This signal eventually vanishes as the phase transition to the paramagnetic phase occurs, thus revealing its connection to the long-range magnetic order. In the presence of an external magnetic field, the optically triggered 3.2 THz phonon hybridizes with a magnon mode, which is utilized to excite the hybridized phonon-magnon mode optically. These findings open a pathway toward the optical control of coherent THz photo-magnonic dynamics in a van der Waals antiferromagnet, which can be scaled down to the 2D limit.

Two-dimensional magnetic behaviour in hybrid NiFe-layered double hydroxides by molecular engineering

Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) are a class of two-dimensional (2D) anionic materials that exhibit remarkable chemical versatility, making them ideal building blocks in the design of complex multifunctional materials. In this line, a NiFe-LDH is probably one of the most important LDHs due to its interesting electrochemical and magnetic properties. However, no direct magnetic measurements of exfoliated NiFe-LDH nanosheets have been reported so far. Herein, we synthesize a hybrid NiFe-LDH family through anion exchange reactions using surfactant molecules in order to increase the interlayer space (ranging from 8 to 31.6 Å), minimizing the interlayer dipolar interactions. By intercalation with octadecylsulphate, we have managed to obtain the largest interlayer space reported for a NiFe-LDH while keeping a similar size, morphology and composition. This wide interlayer separation results in a decrease in temperatures at which spontaneous magnetization (T_M) occurs and the blocking temperature (T_B), as well as a decrease in the coercive fields (H_C). In fact, an abrupt drop in all these magnetic parameters above 30 Å interlayer distance is observed, evidencing complete magnetic decoupling of the layers. We have further validated our molecular engineering approach by characterizing the hybrid materials by Mössbauer spectroscopy and comparing the magnetic analysis results with those for a liquid phase exfoliated NiFe-LDH sample. Overall, this work provides fundamental insights into the magnetism of NiFe-LDHs, showing the potential of molecular engineering for designing hybrid layered magnetic materials approaching the 2D magnetic limit.

Probing the Spin Dimensionality in Single-Layer CrSBr Van Der Waals Heterostructures by Magneto-Transport Measurements

2D magnetic materials offer unprecedented opportunities for fundamental and applied research in spintronics and magnonics. Beyond the pioneering studies on 2D CrI₃ and Cr₂ Ge₂ Te₆ , the field has expanded to 2D antiferromagnets exhibiting different spin anisotropies and textures. Of particular interest is the layered metamagnet CrSBr, a relatively air-stable semiconductor formed by antiferromagnetically-coupled ferromagnetic layers (T_c ∼150 K) that can be exfoliated down to the single-layer. It presents a complex magnetic behavior with a dynamic magnetic crossover, exhibiting a low-temperature hidden-order below T*∼40 K. Here, the magneto-transport properties of CrSBr vertical heterostructures in the 2D limit are inspected. The results demonstrate the marked low-dimensional character of the ferromagnetic monolayer, with short-range correlations above T_c and an Ising-type in-plane anisotropy, being the spins spontaneously aligned along the easy axis b below T_c . By applying moderate magnetic fields along a and c axes, a spin-reorientation occurs, leading to a magnetoresistance enhancement below T*. In multilayers, a spin-valve behavior is observed, with negative magnetoresistance strongly enhanced along the three directions below T*. These results show that CrSBr monolayer/bilayer provides an ideal platform for studying and controlling field-induced phenomena in two-dimensions, offering new insights regarding 2D magnets and their integration into vertical spintronic devices.

Electrical Sensing of the Thermal and Light-Induced Spin Transition in Robust Contactless Spin-Crossover/Graphene Hybrid Devices

Hybrid devices based on spin-crossover (SCO)/2D heterostructures grant a highly sensitive platform to detect the spin transition in the molecular SCO component and tune the properties of the 2D material. However, the fragility of the SCO materials upon thermal treatment, light irradiation, or contact with surfaces and the methodologies used for their processing have limited their applicability. Here, an easily processable and robust SCO/2D hybrid device with outstanding performance based on the sublimable SCO [Fe(Pyrz)₂ ] molecule deposited over chemical vapor deposition (CVD) graphene is reported, which is fully compatible with electronics industry protocols. Thus, a novel methodology based on growing an elusive polymorph of [Fe(Pyrz)₂ ] (tetragonal phase) over graphene is developed that allows a fast and effective light-induced spin transition in the devices (≈50% yield in 5 min) to be detected electrically. Such performance can be enhanced even more when a flexible polymeric layer of poly(methyl methacrylate) is inserted in between the two active components in a contactless configuration, reaching a ≈100% yield in 5 min.

Photoluminescence Enhancement by Band Alignment Engineering in MoS2/FePS3 van der Waals Heterostructures

Single-layer semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (2H-TMDs) display robust excitonic photoluminescence emission, which can be improved by controlled changes to the environment and the chemical potential of the material. However, a drastic emission quench has been generally observed when TMDs are stacked in van der Waals heterostructures, which often favor the nonradiative recombination of photocarriers. Herein, we achieve an enhancement of the photoluminescence of single-layer MoS2 on top of van der Waals FePS3. The optimal energy band alignment of this heterostructure preserves light emission of MoS2 against nonradiative interlayer recombination processes and favors the charge transfer from MoS2, an n-type semiconductor, to FePS3, a p-type narrow-gap semiconductor. The strong depletion of carriers in the MoS2 layer is evidenced by a dramatic increase in the spectral weight of neutral excitons, which is strongly modulated by the thickness of the FePS3 underneath, leading to the increase of photoluminescence intensity. The present results demonstrate the potential for the rational design of van der Waals heterostructures with advanced optoelectronic properties.

Influence of Fe-clustering on the water oxidation performance of two-dimensional layered double hydroxides

Among the two-dimensional (2D) materials family, layered double hydroxides (LDHs) represent a key member due to their unparalleled chemical versatility. In particular, Fe-based LDHs are distinguished candidates due to their high efficiency as oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts. Herein, we have selected MgFe-based LDH phases as model systems in order to decipher whether Fe-clustering exerts an effect on the OER performance. For that, we have optimized hydrothermal synthesis by using triethanolamine (TEA) as the chelating agent. The magnetic characterisation allows us to identify the Fe-clustering degree by following both magnetic susceptibility as well as magnetization values at 2 K. Thanks to this, we demonstrated that TEA induces an increment in Fe-clustering. Electrochemical OER measurements show that both samples behave identically by using glassy carbon electrodes. Interestingly, when the samples are tested in the most commonly employed electrode, nickel foam, striking differences arise. The sample exhibiting a lower Fe-clustering behaves as a better electrocatalyst with a reduction of the overpotential values of more than 50 mV to reach 100 mA cm^-2, as a consequence of a favoured surface transformation of MgFe-LDHs phases into more reactive oxyhydroxide NiFe-based phases during the electrochemical tests. Hence, this work alerts about the importance of the electrocatalyst-electrode collector interactions which can induce misinterpretations in the OER performance.

Strain Switching in van der Waals Heterostructures Triggered by a Spin-Crossover Metal-Organic Framework

Van der Waals heterostructures (vdWHs) provide the possibility of engineering new materials with emergent functionalities that are not accessible in another way. These heterostructures are formed by assembling layers of different materials used as building blocks. Beyond inorganic 2D crystals, layered molecular materials remain still rather unexplored, with only few examples regarding their isolation as atomically thin layers. Here, the family of van der Waals heterostructures is enlarged by introducing a molecular building block able to produce strain: the so-called spin-crossover (SCO). In these metal-organic materials, a spin transition can be induced by applying external stimuli like light, temperature, pressure, or an electric field. In particular, smart vdWHs are prepared in which the electronic and optical properties of the 2D material (graphene and WSe₂ ) are clearly switched by the strain concomitant to the spin transition. These molecular/inorganic vdWHs represent the deterministic incorporation of bistable molecular layers with other 2D crystals of interest in the emergent fields of straintronics and band engineering in low-dimensional materials.

A fluorinated 2D magnetic coordination polymer

Herein we show the versatility of coordination chemistry to design and expand a family of 2D materials by incorporating F groups at the surface of the layers. Through the use of a prefuntionalized organic linker with F groups, it is possible to achieve a layered magnetic material based on Fe(II) centers that are chemically stable in open air, contrary to the known 2D inorganic magnetic materials. The high quality of the single crystals and their robustness allow to fabricate 2D molecular materials by micromechanical exfoliation, preserving the crystalline nature of these layers together with the desired functionalization.

Reversible tuning of luminescence and magnetism in a structurally flexible erbium–anilato MOF

By combining 3,6-N-ditriazolyl-2,5-dihydroxy-1,4-benzoquinone (H₂trz₂An) with NIR-emitting Er^III ions, two different 3D neutral polymorphic frameworks (1a and 1b), differing in the number of uncoordinated water molecules, formulated as [Er₂(trz₂An)₃(H₂O)₄]_n·xH₂O (x = 10, a; x = 7, b), have been obtained. The structure of 1a shows layers with (6,3) topology forming six-membered rings with distorted hexagonal cavities along the bc plane. These 2D layers are interconnected through the N4 atoms of the two pendant arms of the trz₂An linkers, leading to a 3D framework, where neighboring layers are eclipsed along the a axis, with hexagonal channels filled with water molecules. In 1b, layers with (6,3) topology in the [101] plane are present, each Er^III ion being connected to three other Er^III ions through bis-bidentate trz₂An linkers, forming rectangular six-membered cavities. 1a and 1b are multifunctional materials showing coexistence of NIR emission and field-induced slow relaxation of the magnetization. Remarkably, 1a is a flexible MOF, showing a reversible structural phase transition involving shrinkage/expansion from a distorted hexagonal 2D framework to a distorted 3,6-brickwall rectangular 3D structure in [Er₂(trz₂An)₃(H₂O)₂]_n·2H₂O (1a_des). This transition is triggered by a dehydration/hydration process under mild conditions (vacuum/heating to 360 K). The partially dehydrated compound shows a sizeable change in the emission properties and an improvement of the magnetic blocking temperature with respect to the hydrated compound, mainly related to the loss of one water coordination molecule. Theoretical calculations support the experimental findings, indicating that the slight improvement observed in the magnetic properties has its origin in the change of the ligand field around the Er^III ion due to the loss of a water molecule.

Tuning of luminescent and SIM properties is herein reported, in a novel flexible 3D anilato-based Er^III-MOF, displaying reversible shrinkage/expansion from a distorted hexagonal to a 3,6-brickwall rectangular structure.

Proximity Effects on the Charge Density Wave Order and Superconductivity in Single-Layer NbSe2

Collective electronic states such as the charge density wave (CDW) order and superconductivity (SC) respond sensitively to external perturbations. Such sensitivity is dramatically enhanced in two dimensions (2D), where 2D materials hosting such electronic states are largely exposed to the environment. In this regard, the ineludible presence of supporting substrates triggers various proximity effects on 2D materials that may ultimately compromise the stability and properties of the electronic ground state. In this work, we investigate the impact of proximity effects on the CDW and superconducting states in single-layer (SL) NbSe₂ on four substrates of diverse nature, namely, bilayer graphene (BLG), SL-boron nitride (h-BN), Au(111), and bulk WSe₂. By combining low-temperature (340 mK) scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we compare the electronic structure of this prototypical 2D superconductor on each substrate. We find that, even when the electronic band structure of SL-NbSe₂ remains largely unaffected by the substrate except when placed on Au(111), where a charge transfer occurs, both the CDW and SC show disparate behaviors. On the insulating h-BN/Ir(111) substrate and the metallic BLG/SiC(0001) substrate, both the 3 × 3 CDW and superconducting phases persist in SL-NbSe₂ with very similar properties, which reveals the negligible impact of graphene on these electronic phases. In contrast, these collective electronic phases are severely weakened and even absent on the bulk insulating WSe₂ substrate and the metallic single-crystal Au(111) substrate. Our results provide valuable insights into the fragile stability of such electronic ground states in 2D materials.

Molecular stabilization of chemically exfoliated bare MnPS3 layers

Transition metal chalcogenophosphates of general formula MPX₃ have attracted recent interest in the field of 2D materials due to the possibility of tuning their properties upon reaching the 2D limit. Several works address this challenge by dry mechanical exfoliation. However, only a few of them use a scalable approach. In this work, we apply a general chemical protocol to exfoliate MnPS₃. The method employs in the first step chemical intercalation and liquid phase exfoliation and in the second step the addition of molecules used as capping agents on the inorganic layers. Therefore, molecules of different nature prompt the quality of the exfoliated material and its stabilization in an aqueous solution, opening the possibility of using these functionalized layers in several fields. Here we illustrate this possibility in electrochemistry. Thus, we show that when polyethylenimine is used as the capping agent, it is possible to reach a compromise between the stability of high quality MnPS₃ flakes in aqueous suspension and their optimum performance as an electrocatalytic system for HER activity.

Chemical Design and Magnetic Ordering in Thin Layers of 2D Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs)

Through rational chemical design, and thanks to the hybrid nature of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), it is possible to prepare molecule-based 2D magnetic materials stable at ambient conditions. Here, we illustrate the versatility of this approach by changing both the metallic nodes and the ligands in a family of layered MOFs that allows the tuning of their magnetic properties. Specifically, the reaction of benzimidazole-type ligands with different metal centers (MII = Fe, Co, Mn, Zn) in a solvent-free synthesis produces a family of crystalline materials, denoted as MUV-1(M), which order antiferromagnetically with critical temperatures that depend on M. Furthermore, the incorporation of additional substituents in the ligand results in a novel system, denoted as MUV-8, formed by covalently bound magnetic double layers interconnected by van der Waals interactions, a topology that is very rare in the field of 2D materials and unprecedented for 2D magnets. These layered materials are robust enough to be mechanically exfoliated down to a few layers with large lateral dimensions. Finally, the robustness and crystallinity of these layered MOFs allow the fabrication of nanomechanical resonators that can be used to detect─through laser interferometry─the magnetic order in thin layers of these 2D molecule-based antiferromagnets.

Spin-crossover nanoparticles anchored on MoS2 layers for heterostructures with tunable strain driven by thermal or light-induced spin switching

In the past few years, the effect of strain on the optical and electronic properties of MoS₂ layers has attracted particular attention as it can improve the performance of optoelectronic and spintronic devices. Although several approaches have been explored, strain is typically externally applied on the two-dimensional material. In this work, we describe the preparation of a reversible 'self-strainable' system in which the strain is generated at the molecular level by one component of a MoS₂-based composite material. Spin-crossover nanoparticles were covalently grafted onto functionalized layers of semiconducting MoS₂ to form a hybrid heterostructure. Their ability to switch between two spin states on applying an external stimulus (light irradiation or temperature change) serves to generate strain over the MoS₂ layer. A volume change accompanies this spin crossover, and the created strain induces a substantial and reversible change of the electrical and optical properties of the heterostructure.

Spectroscopic Analysis of Vibronic Relaxation Pathways in Molecular Spin Qubit [Ho(W5O18)2]9-: Sparse Spectra Are Key

Vibrations play a prominent role in magnetic relaxation processes of molecular spin qubits as they couple to spin states, leading to the loss of quantum information. Direct experimental determination of vibronic coupling is crucial to understand and control the spin dynamics of these nano-objects, which represent the limit of miniaturization for quantum devices. Herein, we measure the magneto-infrared properties of the molecular spin qubit system Na₉[Ho(W₅O₁₈)₂]·35H₂O. Our results place significant constraints on the pattern of crystal field levels and the vibrational excitations allowing us to unravel vibronic decoherence pathways in this system. We observe field-induced spectral changes near 63 and 370 cm^-1 that are modeled in terms of odd-symmetry vibrations mixed with f-manifold crystal field excitations. The overall extent of vibronic coupling in Na₉[Ho(W₅O₁₈)₂]·35H₂O is limited by a modest coupling constant (on the order of 0.25) and a transparency window in the phonon density of states that acts to keep the intramolecular vibrations and M_J levels apart. These findings advance the understanding of vibronic coupling in a molecular magnet with atomic clock transitions and suggest strategies for designing molecular spin qubits with improved coherence lifetimes.

Binding Sites, Vibrations and Spin-Lattice Relaxation Times in Europium(II)-Based Metallofullerene Spin Qubits

To design molecular spin qubits with enhanced quantum coherence, a control of the coupling between the local vibrations and the spin states is crucial, which could be realized in principle by engineering molecular structures via coordination chemistry. To this end, understanding the underlying structural factors that govern the spin relaxation is a central topic. Here, we report the investigation of the spin dynamics in a series of chemically designed europium(II)-based endohedral metallofullerenes (EMFs). By introducing a unique structural difference, i. e. metal-cage binding site, while keeping other molecular parameters constant between different complexes, these manifest the key role of the three low-energy metal-displacing vibrations in mediating the spin-lattice relaxation times (T1 ). The temperature dependence of T1 can thus be normalized by the frequencies of these low energy vibrations to show an unprecedentedly universal behavior for EMFs in frozen CS2 solution. Our theoretical analysis indicates that this structural difference determines not only the vibrational rigidity but also spin-vibration coupling in these EMF-based qubit candidates.

Insights on the coupling between vibronically active molecular vibrations and lattice phonons in molecular nanomagnets

Spin-lattice relaxation is a key open problem to understand the spin dynamics of single-molecule magnets and molecular spin qubits. While modelling the coupling between spin states and local vibrations allows to determine the more relevant molecular vibrations for spin relaxation, this is not sufficient to explain how energy is dissipated towards the thermal bath. Herein, we employ a simple and efficient model to examine the coupling of local vibrational modes with long-wavelength longitudinal and transverse phonons in the clock-like spin qubit [Ho(W₅O₁₈)₂]^9-. We find that in crystals of this polyoxometalate the vibrational mode previously found to be vibronically active at low temperature does not couple significantly to lattice phonons. This means that further intramolecular energy transfer via anharmonic vibrations is necessary for spin relaxation in this system. Finally, we discuss implications for the spin-phonon coupling of [Ho(W₅O₁₈)₂]^9- deposited on a MgO (001) substrate, offering a simple methodology that can be extrapolated to estimate the effects on spin relaxation of different surfaces, including 2D materials.

Plasmon-assisted spin transition in gold nanostar@spin crossover heterostructures

Herein we report the design of core@shell nanoparticles formed by a metallic Au nanostar core and a spin-crossover shell based on the coordination polymer [Fe(Htrz)₂(trz)](BF₄). This procedure is general and has been extended to other metallic morphologies (nanorods, nanotriangles). Thanks to the photothermal effect arising from the plasmonic properties of the Au nanostar, 60% of iron centers undergo a thermal spin transition inside the thermal hysteresis triggered by a 808 nm laser low intensity irradiation. Compared to other Au morphologies, the great advantage of the nanostar shape arises from the hot spots created at the branches of the nanostar. These hot spots give rise to large NIR absorptions, making them ideal nanostructures for efficiently converting light into heat using low energy light, like that provided by a 808 nm laser.

Enhancing the electrocatalytic activity and stability of Prussian blue analogues by increasing their electroactive sites through the introduction of Au nanoparticles

Prussian blue analogues (PBAs) have been proven as excellent Earth-abundant electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in acidic, neutral and alkaline media. Further improvements can be achieved by increasing their electrical conductivity, but scarce attention has been paid to quantify the electroactive sites of the electrocatalyst when this enhancement occurs. In this work, we have studied how the chemical design influences the specific density of electroactive sites in different Au-PBA nanostructures. Thus, we have first obtained and fully characterized a variety of monodisperse core@shell hybrid nanoparticles of Au@PBA (PBA of Ni^IIFe^II and Co^IIFe^II) with different shell sizes. Their catalytic activity is evaluated by studying the OER, which is compared to pristine PBAs and other Au-PBA heterostructures. By using the coulovoltammetric technique, we have demonstrated that the introduction of 5-10% of Au in weight in the core@shell leads to an increase in the electroactive mass and thus, to a higher density of active sites capable of taking part in the OER. This increase leads to a significant decrease in the onset potential (up to 100 mV) and an increase (up to 420%) in the current density recorded at an overpotential of 350 mV. However, the Tafel slope remains unchanged, suggesting that Au reduces the limiting potential of the catalyst with no variation in the reaction kinetics. These improvements are not observed in other Au-PBA nanostructures mainly due to a lower contact between both compounds and the Au oxidation. Hence, an Au core activates the PBA shell and increases the conductivity of the resulting hybrid, while the PBA shell prevents Au oxidation. The strong synergistic effect existing in the core@shell structure evidences the importance of the chemical design for preparing PBA-based nanostructures exhibiting better electrocatalytic performances and higher electrochemical stabilities.

Coherent coupling between vortex bound states and magnetic impurities in 2D layered superconductors

Bound states in superconductors are expected to exhibit a spatially resolved electron-hole asymmetry which is the hallmark of their quantum nature. This asymmetry manifests as oscillations at the Fermi wavelength, which is usually tiny and thus washed out by thermal broadening or by scattering at defects. Here we demonstrate theoretically and confirm experimentally that, when coupled to magnetic impurities, bound states in a vortex core exhibit an emergent axial electron-hole asymmetry on a much longer scale, set by the coherence length. We study vortices in 2H-NbSe2 and in 2H-NbSe1.8S0.2 with magnetic impurities, characterizing these with detailed Hubbard-corrected density functional calculations. We find that the induced electron-hole imbalance depends on the band character of the superconducting material. Our results show that coupling between quantum bound states in superconductors is remarkably robust and has a strong influence in tunneling measurements.

Out-of-Plane Transport of 1T-TaS2/Graphene-Based van der Waals Heterostructures

Due to their anisotropy, layered materials are excellent candidates for studying the interplay between the in-plane and out-of-plane entanglement in strongly correlated systems. A relevant example is provided by 1T-TaS₂, which exhibits a multifaceted electronic and magnetic scenario due to the existence of several charge density wave (CDW) configurations. It includes quantum hidden phases, superconductivity and exotic quantum spin liquid (QSL) states, which are highly dependent on the out-of-plane stacking of the CDW. In this system, the interlayer stacking of the CDW is crucial for interpreting the underlying electronic and magnetic phase diagram. Here, atomically thin-layers of 1T-TaS₂ are integrated in vertical van der Waals heterostructures based on few-layers graphene contacts and their electrical transport properties are measured. Different activation energies in the conductance and a gap at the Fermi level are clearly observed. Our experimental findings are supported by fully self-consistent DFT+U calculations, which evidence the presence of an energy gap in the few-layer limit, not necessarily coming from the formation of out-of-plane spin-paired bilayers at low temperatures, as previously proposed for the bulk. These results highlight dimensionality as a key effect for understanding quantum materials as 1T-TaS₂, enabling the possible experimental realization of low-dimensional QSLs.

Exploiting Reaction-Diffusion Conditions to Trigger Pathway Complexity in the Growth of a MOF

Coordination polymers (CPs), including metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), are crystalline materials with promising applications in electronics, magnetism, catalysis, and gas storage/separation. However, the mechanisms and pathways underlying their formation remain largely undisclosed. Herein, we demonstrate that diffusion-controlled mixing of reagents at the very early stages of the crystallization process (i.e., within ≈40 ms), achieved by using continuous-flow microfluidic devices, can be used to enable novel crystallization pathways of a prototypical spin-crossover MOF towards its thermodynamic product. In particular, two distinct and unprecedented nucleation-growth pathways were experimentally observed when crystallization was triggered under microfluidic mixing. Full-atom molecular dynamics simulations also confirm the occurrence of these two distinct pathways during crystal growth. In sharp contrast, a crystallization by particle attachment was observed under bulk (turbulent) mixing. These unprecedented results provide a sound basis for understanding the growth of CPs and open up new avenues for the engineering of porous materials by using out-of-equilibrium conditions.

Near Isotropic D4d Spin Qubits as Nodes of a Gd(III)-Based Metal-Organic Framework

Embedding coherent spin motifs in reproducible molecular building blocks is a promising pathway for the realization of quantum technologies. Three-dimensional (3D) MOFs are a versatile platform for the rational design of extended structures employing coordination chemistry. Here, we report the synthesis and characterization of a gadolinium(III)-based MOF, [Gd(bipyNO)₄](TfO)₃·xMeOH (bipyNO = bipyridine,N,N'-dioxide; TfO = triflate; and MeOH = methanol) (quMOF-1), which presents a unique coordination geometry that leads to a tiny magnetic anisotropy (in terms of D, an equivalent zero-field splitting would be achieved by D = 0.006 cm^-1) even compared with regular Gd(III) complexes. Pulsed electron paramagnetic resonance experiments on its magnetically diluted samples confirm the preservation of quantum coherence of single Gd(III) qubit units in this 3D extended molecular architecture (T₂ = 612 ns and T₁ = 66 μs at 3.5 K), which allows for the detection of Rabi oscillations at 40 K.

Controlling the anisotropy of a van der Waals antiferromagnet with light

Van der Waals magnets provide an ideal playground to explore the fundamentals of low-dimensional magnetism and open opportunities for ultrathin spin-processing devices. The Mermin-Wagner theorem dictates that as in reduced dimensions isotropic spin interactions cannot retain long-range correlations, the long-range spin order is stabilized by magnetic anisotropy. Here, using ultrashort pulses of light, we control magnetic anisotropy in the two-dimensional van der Waals antiferromagnet NiPS3 Tuning the photon energy in resonance with an orbital transition between crystal field split levels of the nickel ions, we demonstrate the selective activation of a subterahertz magnon mode with markedly two-dimensional behavior. The pump polarization control of the magnon amplitude confirms that the activation is governed by the photoinduced magnetic anisotropy axis emerging in response to photoexcitation of ground state electrons to states with a lower orbital symmetry. Our results establish pumping of orbital resonances as a promising route for manipulating magnetic order in low-dimensional (anti)ferromagnets.

Insertion of single-ion magnets based on mononuclear Co(II) complexes into ferromagnetic oxalate-based networks

The 1 : 2 and 1 : 1 Co(ii) complexes of the L ligand (L = 6-(3,5-diamino-2,4,6-triazinyl)2,2'-bipyridine) with formulas [CoII(L)2](ClO4)2·0.5MeCN·Et2O (1) and [CoII(L)(CH3CN)2(H2O)](ClO4)2·MeCN (2) have been prepared. The structural and magnetic characterization of the two compounds shows that they contain octahedral high-spin Co(ii) and present a field-induced slow relaxation of the magnetization. 1 has been inserted into a bimetallic oxalate-based network leading to a novel achiral 3D compound of formula [CoII(L)2][MnIICrIII(ox)3]2·(solvate) (3) exhibiting ferromagnetic ordering below 4.6 K. EPR measurements suggest a weak magnetic coupling between the two sublattices.

The design of magneto-plasmonic nanostructures formed by magnetic Prussian Blue-type nanocrystals decorated with Au nanoparticles

We have developed a general protocol for the preparation of hybrid nanostructures formed by nanoparticles (NPs) of molecule-based magnets based on Prussian Blue Analogues (PBAs) decorated with plasmonic Au NPs of different shapes. By adjusting the pH, Au NPs can be attached preferentially along the edges of the PBA or randomly on the surface. The protocol allows tuning the plasmonic properties of the hybrids in the whole visible spectrum.

Quantum Rescaling, Domain Metastability, and Hybrid Domain-Walls in 2D CrI3 Magnets

Higher-order exchange interactions and quantum effects are widely known to play an important role in describing the properties of low-dimensional magnetic compounds. Here, the recently discovered 2D van der Waals (vdW) CrI₃ is identified as a quantum non-Heisenberg material with properties far beyond an Ising magnet as initially assumed. It is found that biquadratic exchange interactions are essential to quantitatively describe the magnetism of CrI₃ but quantum rescaling corrections are required to reproduce its thermal properties. The quantum nature of the heat bath represented by discrete electron-spin and phonon-spin scattering processes induces the formation of spin fluctuations in the low-temperature regime. These fluctuations induce the formation of metastable magnetic domains evolving into a single macroscopic magnetization or even a monodomain over surface areas of a few micrometers. Such domains display hybrid characteristics of Néel and Bloch types with a narrow domain wall width in the range of 3-5 nm. Similar behavior is expected for the majority of 2D vdW magnets where higher-order exchange interactions are appreciable.
