Self-Assembly of Organic Semiconductors on Strained Graphene under Strain-Induced Pseudo-Electric Fields

Graphene is used as a growth template for van der Waals epitaxy of organic semiconductor (OSC) thin films. During the synthesis and transfer of chemical-vapor-deposited graphene on a target substrate, local inhomogeneities in the graphene-in particular, a nonuniform strain field in the graphene template-can easily form, causing poor morphology and crystallinity of the OSC thin films. Moreover, a strain field in graphene introduces a pseudo-electric field in the graphene. Here, the study investigates how the strain and strain-induced pseudo-electric field of a graphene template affect the self-assembly of π-conjugated organic molecules on it. Periodically strained graphene templates are fabricated by transferring graphene onto an array of nanospheres and then analyzed the growth and nucleation behavior of C60 thin films on the strained graphene templates. Both experiments and a numerical simulation demonstrated that strained graphene reduced the desorption energy between the graphene and the C60 molecules and thereby suppressed both nucleation and growth of the C60. A mechanism is proposed in which the strain-induced pseudo-electric field in graphene modulates the binding energy of organic molecules on the graphene.

Unequivocal Identification of Spin-Triplet and Spin-Singlet Superconductors with Upper Critical Field and Flux Quantization

Spin-triplet superconductors play central roles in Majorana physics and quantum computing but are difficult to identify. We show the methods of kink-point upper critical field and flux quantization in superconducting rings can unequivocally identify spin-singlet, spin-triplet in centrosymmetric superconductors, and singlet-triplet admixture in noncentrosymmetric superconductors, as realized in γ-BiPd, β-Bi_{2}Pd, and α-BiPd, respectively. Our findings are essential for identifying triplet superconductors and exploring their quantum properties.

Recent Understanding in the Chemical Vapor Deposition of Multilayer Graphene: Controlling Uniformity, Thickness, and Stacking Configuration

Multilayer graphene has attracted significant attention because its physical properties can be tuned by stacking its layers in a particular configuration. To apply the intriguing properties of multilayer graphene in various optoelectronic or spintronic devices, it is essential to develop a synthetic method that enables the control of the stacking configuration. This review article presents the recent progress in the synthesis of multilayer graphene by chemical vapor deposition (CVD). First, we discuss the CVD of multilayer graphene, utilizing the precipitation or segregation of carbon atoms from metal catalysts with high carbon solubility. Subsequently, we present novel CVD approaches to yield uniform and thickness-controlled multilayer graphene, which goes beyond the conventional precipitation or segregation methods. Finally, we introduce the latest studies on the control of stacking configurations in bilayer graphene during CVD processes.

Disordered Phase-Assisted Growth of Organic Semiconductor Crystals on Self-Assembled Monolayer Templates

Achieving high mobility and bias stability is a challenging obstacle in the advancement of organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs). To this end, the fabrication of high-quality organic semiconductor (OSC) thin films is critical for OTFTs. Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) have been used as growth templates for high-crystalline OSC thin films. Despite significant research progress in the growth of OSC on SAMs, a detailed understanding of the growth mechanism of the OSC thin films on a SAM template is lacking, which has limited its use. In this study, the effects of the structure (thickness and molecular packing) of SAM on the nucleation and growth behavior of the OSC thin films were investigated. We found that disordered SAM molecules assisted in the surface diffusion of the OSC molecules and resulted in a small nucleation density and large grain size of the OSC thin films. Moreover, a thick SAM with disordered SAM molecules on the top was found to be beneficial for the high mobility and bias stability of the OTFTs.

Hyperfractionated Cyclophosphamide and Dexamethasone Alone or in Combination with Daratumumab and/or Carfilzomib for the Treatment of Relapsed or Refractory Multiple Myeloma: A Single-Center Retrospective Analysis

BACKGROUND

Hyperfractionated cyclophosphamide and dexamethasone (HyperCd) alone, or with carfilzomib(K) and/or daratumumab(D), represents a potential treatment option when rapid disease control is needed for patients with aggressive presentations of relapsed/refractory multiple myeloma (RRMM).

PATIENTS AND METHODS

This is a single-center, retrospective analysis of adult patients with RRMM who received HyperCd with or without K and/or D between May 1, 2016 and August 1, 2019 at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. We here report treatment response and safety outcomes.

RESULTS

Data from 97 patients, 12 with plasma cell leukemia (PCL), were reviewed in this analysis. Patients had had a median of 5 prior lines of therapy and received a median of 1 consecutive cycle of hyperCd-based therapy. The overall response rate (ORR) of all patients was 71.8% (HyperCd 75%, HyperCdK 64.3%, D-HyperCd 73.3%, and D-HyperCdK 76.9%). Median progression-free survival and overall survival among all patients was 4.3 months (HyperCd 3.1 months, HyperCdK 4.5 months, D-HyperCd 3.3 months, and D-HyperCdK 6 months) and 9.0 months (HyperCd 7.4 months, HyperCdK 9.0 months, D-HyperCd 7.5 months, and D-HyperCdK 15.2 months), respectively. Grade 3/4 hematologic toxicities were common, thrombocytopenia being the most frequent at 76%. Notably, 29-41% of patients per treatment group had existing grade 3/4 cytopenias at initiation of hyperCd-based therapy.

CONCLUSION

HyperCd-based regimens provided rapid disease control among MM patients, even when heavily pre-treated and with few remaining treatment options. Grade 3/4 hematologic toxicities were frequent, but manageable with aggressive supportive care.

Photogating Effect of Atomically Thin Graphene/MoS2/MoTe2 van der Waals Heterostructures

The development of short-wave infrared photodetectors based on various two-dimensional (2D) materials has recently attracted attention because of the ability of these devices to operate at room temperature. Although van der Waals heterostructures of 2D materials with type-II band alignment have significant potential for use in short-wave infrared photodetectors, there is a need to develop photodetectors with high photoresponsivity. In this study, we investigated the photogating of graphene using a monolayer-MoS2/monolayer-MoTe2 van der Waals heterostructure. By stacking MoS2/MoTe2 on graphene, we fabricated a broadband photodetector that exhibited a high photoresponsivity (>100 mA/W) and a low dark current (60 nA) over a wide wavelength range (488−1550 nm).

van der Waals Epitaxy of Organic Semiconductor Thin Films on Atomically Thin Graphene Templates for Optoelectronic Applications

ConspectusOrganic semiconductors (OSCs) offer unique advantages with respect to mechanical flexibility, low-cost processing, and tunable properties. The optical and electrical properties of devices based on OSCs can be greatly improved when an OSC is coupled with graphene in a certain manner. Our research group has focused on using graphene as a growth template for OSCs and incorporating such high-quality heterostructures into optoelectronic devices. The idea is that graphene's atomically flat surface with a uniform sp² carbon network can serve as a perfect quasi-epitaxial template for the growth of OSCs. In addition, OSC-graphene heterostructures benefit from graphene's unique characteristics, such as its high charge-carrier mobility, excellent optical transparency, and fascinating mechanical durability and flexibility.However, we have often found that OSC molecules assemble on graphene in unpredictable manners that vary from batch to batch. From observations of numerous research systems, we elucidated the mechanism underlying such poor repeatability and set out a framework to actually control the template effect of graphene on OSCs. In this Account, we not only present our scientific findings in this spectrum of areas but also convey our research scheme to the readers so that similar heterostructure complexes can be systematically studied.We began with experiments showing that the growth of OSCs on a graphene surface was driven by van der Waals interactions and is therefore sensitive to the cleanliness of the graphene surface. Nonetheless, we noted that, even on similarly clean graphene surfaces, the OSC thin film still varied with the underlying substrate. Thanks to the graphene-transfer method and in situ gating methods that we developed, we discovered that the decisive parameter for molecule-graphene interaction (and, hence, for the growth of OSCs on graphene) is the charge density in the graphene. Thus, to prepare a graphene template for high-quality graphene-OSC heterostructures, we controlled the charge density in the graphene to minimize the molecule-graphene interaction. Moreover, the possible charge transfer between OSC molecules and graphene, which induces additional molecule-graphene interactions, should also be taken into account. Eventually, we demonstrated a wide range of optoelectronic applications that benefitted from high-quality OSC-graphene heterostructures fabricated using our proof-of-concept systems.

Effects of hot water spray and sub-zero saline chilling on bacterial decontamination of broiler carcasses

Reduction of Salmonella on poultry carcasses is one way to prevent salmonellosis. The purpose of this research was to evaluate the effects of subzero saline chilling (SSC) with/without hot water spray (HWS) on broiler carcasses prior to chilling for bacterial reduction. Eviscerated broiler carcasses were subjected to water immersion chilling (WIC, 0% NaCl/0.5°C) or SSC (4% NaCl/-2.41°C) with/without prior HWS at 71°C for 1 min. Broiler carcasses in SSC were chilled faster than those in WIC, regardless of HWS. The combination of HWS and SSC resulted in the best reduction of mesophilic aerobic bacteria, Escherichia coli, and total coliforms on the carcasses over the WIC, SSC, and HWS/WIC. No Salmonella was detected on the carcasses in SSC and HWS/SSC while Salmonella positive was observed on the carcasses chilled in WIC and HWS/WIC. A trace of Gram-negative genus was detected on carcasses in HWS/SSC while many other microbiomes were observed on those in WIC, SSC, and HWS/WIC when quantitative microbiota profiles of 16S rRNA gene sequences were evaluated. Based on these results, chilling of broiler carcasses in 4% NaCl/-2.41°C after HWS at 71°C for 1 min significantly reduced carcass chilling time and bacterial contamination over the control chilling.

Research Note: Subzero saline chilling improved chilling efficiency and bacterial reduction of turkey carcasses

The poultry industry has attempted to improve carcass chilling efficiency, meat quality, and product safety. The purpose of this research was to investigate the effects of subzero saline chilling on carcass chilling time and microbial safety. Eviscerated tom turkeys were randomly picked from a local turkey processing plant and subjected to chilling in one of the 3 chilling solutions: 1) 0% NaCl/0.5°C (ice slurry control), 2) 4% NaCl/-2.41°C, and 3) 8% NaCl/-5.08°C. The turkey carcasses in subzero saline solutions were chilled more efficiently and reduced the chilling time over the carcasses in ice slurry solution. No significant difference was observed for carcass chilling yield and fillet cooking yield regardless of chilling method (P > 0.05). The number of mesophilic aerobic bacteria (MAB), Escherichia coli (E. coli), and total coliform cells were significantly reduced in the carcasses chilled in subzero saline solutions over the icy control, except MAB in 4% NaCl/-2.41°C (P < 0.05). Based on these results, the chilling of turkey carcass in subzero saline solution appears to improve carcass chilling efficiency and bacterial reduction, especially Gram-negative bacteria such as E. coli and total coliforms.

A randomised controlled trial of 7.5-mm and 7.0-mm tracheal tubes vs. 6.5-mm and 6.0-mm tracheal tubes for men and women during laparoscopic surgery

Sore throat after tracheal intubation impairs postoperative recovery. We randomly allocated 172 ASA physical status 1-2 participants, scheduled for laparoscopic lower abdominal surgery, to tracheal intubation with larger tubes (n = 88) or smaller tubes (n = 84), with internal diameters 7.5-mm vs. 6.5-mm for men and 7.0-mm vs. 6.0-mm for women. Primary outcome was the rates of no, mild, moderate or severe sore throat 1 h after surgery, which were 60, 10, 17 and 1 with larger tracheal tubes and 79, 5, 0 and 0 with smaller tubes, p < 0.001. The equivalent rates 24 h after surgery were 64, 16, 8 and 0 vs. 74, 6, 3 and 1, p = 0.037. Intra-operative ventilatory variables were unaffected by tube diameter, including peak inspiratory pressure, plateau pressure and end-tidal carbon dioxide partial pressure. In summary, smaller tracheal tubes benefitted patients having laparoscopic operations.

P–009 A modified sperm chromatin dispersion test, LensHooke® R10, for quick and accurate determination of human sperm DNA fragmentation

Study question

The performance and efficiency of the LensHooke® R10 test kit were evaluated by the clinical examination for precision, accuracy, and time.

Summary answer

The LensHooke® R10 based on sperm chromatin dispersion test offers not only quick testing for sperm DNA fragmentation but also reliable and accurate test results.

What is known already

Sperm chromatin dispersion (SCD) test, one of the most commonly used testing for sperm DNA fragmentation (SDF), can be conducted promptly and without the need for expensive laboratory instruments. However, the main disadvantage of the SCD test is inter-observer variability in categorizing the size of characteristics halos surrounding the core of sperm. Moreover, it takes more than one hour to accomplish whole assay procedures making this testing an inefficient diagnostic tool. These may hinder its broad availability among andrology laboratories or prevent it from being routinely used for the evaluation of male infertility.

Study design, size, duration

A total of 108 participants was included in this prospective study. Data was collected from the reproductive medicine center between June and December 2020.

Participants/materials, setting, methods

This study included 108 consecutive male partners of couples attending for assisted reproductive treatment. SDF was simultaneously tested by using LensHooke® R10 (R10) and Halosperm® G2 (G2) respectively. We evaluated the correlation and agreement between two SCD-based test kits. The repeatability and reproducibility of the SCD kits were assessed by intra-and inter-observer agreement experiments. The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value for the R10 was determined by receiver operator characteristics (ROC) curve analysis.

Main results and the role of chance

The R10 produced more clear sperm core and dispersed chromatin, therefore highly recognizable images can be easily and accurately categorized when scoring of SDF. It took 50% less time for SDF testing by the R10 compared to the G2 (38.26 ± 9.85 minutes vs. 76.52 ± 19.7 minutes, P &lt; 0.0001). The SDF% results showed a strong correlation for the R10 and G2 with Spearman’s coefficients of rank correlation (rho) above 0.8 (P &lt; 0.0001, N = 108). The R10 showed 89.8% accuracy with 87.9% sensitivity, 90.8% specificity, 82.9% PPV, and 93.7% NPV on the measurement of SDF% at the threshold value of 22%. Intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) &gt;0.9 showed a strong agreement between two observers on the testing of SDF using the R10. ICC &gt;0.9 showed a high intra-observer agreement within 4 repeated testing on SDF using the R10. The R10 showed an intra-observer’s precision of coefficient variation, CV &lt; 10% for SDF%. In addition, SDF% test results obtained by the R10 for asthenospermic (31.8% ± 16.7%), teratospermic (22.9% ± 14.4%), and oligoasthenoteratozoospermic samples (36.6% ± 14.4%) were significantly higher than that observed in normozoospermic samples (15.3% ± 10.2%, p &lt; 0.05), was comparable with the G2.

Limitations, reasons for caution

The sample size of 4 semen specimens used to evaluate the intra-and inter-observer agreement was a limitation. Besides, evaluating the relationship between the SDF and clinical outcome of ART is necessary for further study.

Wider implications of the findings: The new in vitro diagnostics reagent, LensHooke® R10, is a simple and quick test kit that offers reliable and accurate test results of sperm DNA fragmentation, can be routinely used in male infertility evaluation.

Supraclavicular versus infraclavicular approach for ultrasound-guided right subclavian venous catheterisation: a randomised controlled non-inferiority trial

Infraclavicular and supraclavicular approaches are used for subclavian venous catheterisation. We hypothesised that the supraclavicular approach is non-inferior to the infraclavicular approach in terms of safety during ultrasound-guided right subclavian venous catheterisation. We randomly allocated 401 neurosurgical patients undergoing ultrasound-guided right subclavian venous catheterisation into supraclavicular (n = 200) and infraclavicular (n = 201) groups. We assessed catheterisation-related complications (primary outcome measure) including catheter misplacement and mechanical complications (arterial puncture, haematoma formation, pneumothorax and haemothorax). We also recorded catheterisation success rates and time required for venous puncture and catheterisation. The number (proportion) of patients with catheterisation-related complications was six (3.0%) in the supraclavicular group and 27 (13.4%) in the infraclavicular group, mean difference (95%CI) -10.4% (-15.7 to -5.1%), p < 0.001, with a significant difference also seen for catheter misplacement. Except for a shorter time (median (IQR [range]) required for venous puncture in the supraclavicular group, being 9 (6-20 [2-138]) vs. 13 (8-20 [3-99]) s, the incidence of mechanical complications and other catheterisation characteristics were similar between the two groups. We recommend the supraclavicular approach for ultrasound-guided right subclavian venous catheterisation.

'Occupational dermatoses from Personal Protective Equipment during the COVID-19 pandemic in the tropics - A Review'

The COVID-19 pandemic has enveloped the world and there has been a high incidence of occupational dermatoses related to Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) amongst healthcare workers (HCWs) during this period. Prevention and management of these conditions will not only improve staff morale and quality of life, but will also minimize the risk of breaching PPE protocol due to such symptoms. The tropical climate in Singapore predisposes HCWs to more skin damage and pruritus due to intense heat, high humidity and sun exposure. The effects of friction, occlusion, hyperhidrosis and overheating on the skin in the tropics should not be neglected. Preventive measures can be taken based on our recommendations, and the working environment can be made more conducive for frontline HCWs. We review the literature and discuss various preventive and management strategies for these occupational skin diseases for our frontline HCWs, especially those working in less controlled working environments beyond the hospital in Singapore. Shorter shifts and frequent breaks from PPE are recommended. Duration of continuous PPE-usage should not exceed 6 h, with breaks in non-contaminated areas every 2-3 h to hydrate and mitigate the risk of skin reactions. Other strategies, such as teledermatology, should be considered so that consultations can remain accessible, while ensuring the safety and well-being of our clinical staff.

Effects of subzero saline chilling on broiler chilling efficiency, meat quality, and microbial safety

The poultry industry has attempted to improve carcass chilling efficiency, meat quality, and product safety. The purpose of this research was to investigate the effects of subzero saline chilling on carcass chilling, breast fillet tenderness, and microbial safety. After evisceration, broiler carcasses were chilled using ice slurry control (0% NaCl/0.5°C) or subzero saline solutions (3% NaCl/-1.8°C and 4% NaCl/-2.41°C). Broiler carcasses in the subzero saline solutions were chilled efficiently and reduced the chilling time by 11% in 3% NaCl/-1.8°C and 37% in 4% NaCl/-2.41°C over the ice slurry chilling. The breast fillets of broiler carcasses in 4% NaCl/-2.41°C were significantly tenderized than those in water control (P < 0.05), with an intermediate value observed in 3% NaCl/-1.8°C. Before chilling, broiler carcasses possessed mesophilic aerobic bacteria, Escherichia coli, and total coliforms for 3.81, 0.78, and 1.86 log cfu/g, respectively, which were significantly reduced after chilling in 3% NaCl/-1.8°C or 4% NaCl/-2.41°C solution over the water control (P < 0.05), except the mesophilic aerobic bacteria. Based on these results, chilling of boiler carcass in 4% NaCl/-1.8°C solution appears to improve carcass chilling efficiency, meat tenderness, and bacterial reduction for E. coli and total coliforms.

Robotic-assisted latissimus dorsi muscle flap for autologous chest reconstruction in poland syndrome

BACKGROUND

As chest reconstructions in Poland syndrome are performed for patients at young ages, patients are generally concerned about conspicuous scars. Meanwhile, a robotic-assisted latissimus dorsi (LD) muscle harvest with inconspicuous scars has been performed for autologous breast reconstruction. As our experience with robotic-assisted LD flap harvest has increased over the years, we have made improvements in surgical techniques to optimize results. The purpose of this study was to introduce and identify the role of the refined robotic-assisted LD muscle flap harvest technique in autologous chest reconstruction in patients with Poland syndrome.

METHODS

Autologous chest reconstruction using a robotic-assisted LD muscle flap harvest was performed for 21 patients with Poland syndrome. Subjective assessments were performed to evaluate improvement in chest deformity, patient satisfaction with overall outcomes, chest symmetry, and scars. Assessments by the operator and two independent evaluating investigators were carried out with patients' photographs. The complication rates and the time for robotic surgery were also evaluated.

RESULTS

At the last visit, the average patient grades for improvement in chest deformity, satisfaction with overall outcomes, chest symmetry, and scars were 4.80, 4.72, 4.18, and 4.87, respectively. Assessments by the operator and two independent evaluating investigators demonstrated that improvement in chest deformity was achieved in all patients. No serious complications such as flap loss were recorded for any patient. The time for robotic surgery markedly decreased as experience accumulated.

CONCLUSIONS

Surgical refinements for robotic-assisted LD flap harvest might be effective and reduce operative times for patients with Poland syndrome.

Charge-Transfer-Controlled Growth of Organic Semiconductor Crystals on Graphene

Controlling the growth behavior of organic semiconductors (OSCs) is essential because it determines their optoelectronic properties. In order to accomplish this, graphene templates with electronic-state tunability are used to affect the growth of OSCs by controlling the van der Waals interaction between OSC ad-molecules and graphene. However, in many graphene-molecule systems, the charge transfer between an ad-molecule and a graphene template causes another important interaction. This charge-transfer-induced interaction is never considered in the growth scheme of OSCs. Here, the effects of charge transfer on the formation of graphene-OSC heterostructures are investigated, using fullerene (C60) as a model compound. By in situ electrical doping of a graphene template to suppress the charge transfer between C60 ad-molecules and graphene, the layer-by-layer growth of a C60 film on graphene can be achieved. Under this condition, the graphene-C60 interface is free of Fermi-level pinning; thus, barristors fabricated on the graphene-C60 interface show a nearly ideal Schottky-Mott limit with efficient modulation of the charge-injection barrier. Moreover, the optimized C60 film exhibits a high field-effect electron mobility of 2.5 cm2 V-1 s-1. These results provide an efficient route to engineering highly efficient optoelectronic graphene-OSC hybrid material applications.

3334Updated meta-analysis of biodegradable polymer drug-eluting stent versus second-generation durable polymer drug-eluting stent implantations

Background

Data regarding clinical outcomes of biodegradable polymer drug-eluting stent (BP-DES) versus second-generation durable polymer drug-eluting stent (DP-DES) in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) are inconclusive.

Purpose

We aimed to perform a meta-analysis to investigate the clinical outcomes of BP-DES compared with second-generation DP-DES in patients who have undergone PCI.

Methods

We searched PubMed, MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Cochrane databases through January 2019 for randomized controlled trials comparing BP-DES with second-generation DP-DES in patients treated with PCI. All-cause death, cardiac death, myocardial infarction (MI), target vessel revascularization (TVR), target lesion revascularization (TLR), definite/probable stent thrombosis (ST) were compared between the groups. Additionally, a landmark analysis with the landmark set at 1 year and a subgroup analysis according to stent characteristics were performed.

Results

Data from 23 trials including 28802 randomized patients were analyzed. At a median follow up of 3.1 years, no significant differences were found in terms of all-cause death (odds ratio [OR] 1.05, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.95–1.16), cardiac death (OR 1.01, 95% CI 0.87–1.17), MI (OR 0.92, 95% CI 0.82–1.03), TVR (OR 0.97, 95% CI 0.86–1.11), TLR (OR 0.97, 95% CI 0.85–1.11), and definite/probable ST (OR 0.86, 95% CI 0.70–1.07) between the groups. Landmark analysis showed that there were similar risks in all-cause death (OR 1.04, 95% CI 0.93–1.17), cardiac death (OR 1.11, 95% CI 0.92–1.36), MI (OR 0.94, 95% CI 0.79–1.13), TVR (OR 0.95, 95% CI 0.73–1.23), TLR (OR 1.00, 95% CI 0.80–1.24), and definite/probable ST (OR 0.92, 95% CI 0.67–1.28) between the groups. The similar tendency of any study endpoints between the groups was consistent in the subgroup, including stent platform (stainless steel vs. alloy), the drug coating distribution (abluminal vs. circumferential), the polymer degradation period (<6 months vs. >6 months), or the drug release duration (<6 months vs. >6 months) of BP-DES, or the DAPT duration (≥6 months vs. ≥12 months). However, the uses of BP-DES with sirolimus-eluting (OR 0.84, 95% CI 0.72–0.98) or ultrathin strut (defined as <70μm; OR 0.81, 95% CI 0.68–0.97) were predictive for lower risk of MI.

Clinical outcomes

Conclusions

In our updated meta-analysis, BP-DES implantation was associated with comparable clinical outcomes compared with second-generation DP-DES implantation. However, PCI with ultrathin biodegradable polymer sirolimus-eluting stent could reduce the risk of MI.

P2799Long-term outcomes after percutaneous coronary intervention with biodegradable polymer drug-eluting stent versus second-generation durable polymer drug-eluting stent: evidence from a meta-analysis

Background

The true benefit of biodegradable polymer drug-eluting stent (BP-DES) over second-generation durable polymer drug-eluting stent (DP-DES) expected to be represented during late period of follow-up after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), but prior meta-analysis only evaluated short-term outcomes.

Purpose

We aimed to compare the long-term clinical outcomes after PCI with BP-DES versus second-generation DP-DES by a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

Methods

Randomized controlled trials comparing BP-DES with second-generation DP-DES implantations were searched through PubMed, MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Cochrane databases. All-cause death, cardiac death, myocardial infarction (MI), target vessel revascularization (TVR), target lesion revascularization (TLR), and definite/probable stent thrombosis (ST) were compared between the groups. In addition, a landmark analysis with the landmark set at 1-year and a subgroup analysis based on stent characteristics were performed.

Results

Fifteen trials that included a total of 21311 randomized patients with at least 2 years follow-up were analyzed. At a median follow-up of 4.2 years, no significant differences in the risks of all-cause death (odds ratio [OR] 1.03, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.94–1.14), cardiac death (OR 1.03, 95% CI 0.88–1.20), MI (OR 0.90, 95% CI 0.79–1.01), TVR (OR 0.96, 95% CI 0.82–1.12), TLR (OR 0.97, 95% CI 0.85–1.11), and definite/probable ST (OR 0.84, 95% CI 0.67–1.05) were found between the groups. In the 1-year landmark analysis, the rates of all-cause death (OR 1.04, 95% CI 0.93–1.17), cardiac death (OR 1.11, 95% CI 0.92–1.36), MI (OR 0.94, 95% CI 0.79–1.13), TVR (OR 0.95, 95% CI 0.73–1.23), TLR (OR 1.00, 95% CI 0.80–1.24), and definite/probable ST (OR 0.94, 95% CI 0.67–1.31) were similar between the groups. There were comparable rates of any study endpoints between the groups regardless of stent platform (stainless steel vs. alloy), the polymer degradation period (<6 months vs. >6 months) or the drug release duration (<6 months vs. >6 months) of BP-DES, or the DAPT duration (≥6 months vs. ≥12 months). However, the use of BP-DES with sirolimus eluting (OR 0.82, 95% CI 0.70–0.97), circumferential drug distribution (OR 0.79, 95% CI 0.65–0.96), thin strut (defined as <100μm; OR 0.83, 95% CI 0.70–0.97), or ultrathin strut (defined as <70μm; OR 0.78, 95% CI 0.64–0.94) were associated with lower rates of MI than did second-generation DP-DES. Moreover, BP-DES with circumferential drug distribution (OR 0.82, 95% CI 0.69–0.98) was predictive for reduced rates of TVR.

Clinical outcomes

Conclusions

In this meta-analysis, long-term clinical outcomes were equivalent between BP-DES and second-generation DP-DES implantations. However, among BP-DESs, the improved risks of MI in those with sirolimus eluting, circumferential drug distribution, thin strut, or ultrathin strut and decreased rates of TVR in those with circumferential drug distribution were noted.

Vaccinia-based oncolytic immunotherapy Pexastimogene Devacirepvec in patients with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma after sorafenib failure: a randomized multicenter Phase IIb trial (TRAVERSE)

Pexastimogene devacirepvec (Pexa-Vec) is a vaccinia virus-based oncolytic immunotherapy designed to preferentially replicate in and destroy tumor cells while stimulating anti-tumor immunity by expressing GM-CSF. An earlier randomized Phase IIa trial in predominantly sorafenib-naïve hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) demonstrated an overall survival (OS) benefit. This randomized, open-label Phase IIb trial investigated whether Pexa-Vec plus Best Supportive Care (BSC) improved OS over BSC alone in HCC patients who failed sorafenib therapy (TRAVERSE).

129 patients were randomly assigned 2:1 to Pexa-Vec plus BSC vs. BSC alone. Pexa-Vec was given as a single intravenous (IV) infusion followed by up to 5 IT injections. The primary endpoint was OS. Secondary endpoints included overall response rate (RR), time to progression (TTP) and safety.

A high drop-out rate in the control arm (63%) confounded assessment of response-based endpoints. Median OS (ITT) for Pexa-Vec plus BSC vs. BSC alone was 4.2 and 4.4 months, respectively (HR, 1.19, 95% CI: 0.78–1.80; p = .428). There was no difference between the two treatment arms in RR or TTP. Pexa-Vec was generally well-tolerated. The most frequent Grade 3 included pyrexia (8%) and hypotension (8%). Induction of immune responses to vaccinia antigens and HCC associated antigens were observed.

Despite a tolerable safety profile and induction of T cell responses, Pexa-Vec did not improve OS as second-line therapy after sorafenib failure. The true potential of oncolytic viruses may lie in the treatment of patients with earlier disease stages which should be addressed in future studies.

Comparison of raw meat quality and protein-gel properties of turkey breast fillets processed by traditional or cold-batter mincing technology

This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of cold batter mincing on meat quality and protein functionality, using turkey fillets that were chill-boned (CB) or hot-boned (HB) with crust-freeze-air-chilling (HB-¼CFAC) at -12°C. For each of four replications, 48 toms (male) were raised and processed at Michigan State University Poultry Farm and Meat Laboratory, respectively. After evisceration, the turkeys were subjected to one of the four treatments: (1) traditional mincing of CB fillets after water immersion chilling (WIC); (2) cold batter mincing of WIC, CB, quarter-sectioned (¼), and CB-¼CFAC; (3) traditional mincing of HB-¼CFAC fillets; and (4) cold batter mincing of HB-¼CFAC fillets. Before mincing, the pH and R-values of turkey fillets in HB-¼CFAC were higher and lower, respectively, than those in CB fillets. During cold-batter mixing, the initial batter temperatures at -1.5 to -2.1°C reached 1.5°C and 14°C at 6 and 12 min, respectively, and ended at 26 to 31°C at 24 min. During traditional mincing, the initial batter temperatures at 3 to 4°C increased by ∼10°C every 6 min, and ended at 32 to 35°C with higher batter temperatures seen for the 2% salt than the 1% salt batter. Dynamic rheological properties indicated that the cold-batter mincing showed elevated G' compared to the batters of traditional mincing, regardless of mixing time, indicating that the gel-setting temperature was reduced in the cold-batter mincing, potentially due to the different amounts of extracted protein and structural change. After cooking, improved cooking yield and protein functionality were observed in the batter of HB-¼CFAC fillets than the batter of CB fillets as well as in the batter of 2% salt than the batter 1% salt (P < 0.05). These results indicated that HB-¼CFAC fillets produced superior raw meat quality over the CB fillets, and cold batter mincing of HB-¼CFAC fillets significantly improved protein functionality compared with the traditional mincing of CB fillets (P < 0.05).

Electric-Field-Tunable Growth of Organic Semiconductor Crystals on Graphene

Growth of organic semiconductor thin films on a two-dimensional template is affected by its properties and is not well understood. This growth process dictates a thin film's final morphology and crystal structure and is controlled by the interactions between ad-molecules and the template. Here, we report that the template's charge density determines the tuning of such interactions. We observe the dependence of pentacene nucleation on charge carrier density n_g in graphene under an applied electric field and contact-doping and then deduce that the interaction energy E_A between the ad-molecule and the graphene is related linearly to n_g. This tunability of E_A allows control of the pentacene crystals growth. We exploit these findings to demonstrate that graphene, in which n_g is controlled, can be used to template pentacene thin films for improved optoelectronic properties, such as electrical conductivity and exciton diffusion length.

Highly Conductive Flexible Metal-Ceramic Nanolaminate Electrode for High-Performance Soft Electronics

Realization of flexible electronics is an attractive challenge because of its great potential in many applications. However, the design of flexible and highly conductive metal electrodes has been a bottleneck for the fabrication of flexible devices because bulk metals are easily fractured when subjected to elongation or compression. Here, we demonstrate metal-ceramic nanolaminates as electrodes for flexible electronic devices. Insertion of ceramic layers, each with a thickness of a few nanometers, into an otherwise metal electrode significantly improved its strength and bending stability and only slightly reduced its electrical conductivity. Finally, we demonstrated that a touch screen panel fabricated with metal-ceramic nanolaminate electrodes was stable to 200 000 cycles of folding to a bending radius of 3 mm.

Copper-Vapor-Assisted Growth and Defect-Healing of Graphene on Copper Surfaces

Although there is significant progress in the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of graphene on Cu surfaces, the industrial application of graphene is not realized yet. One of the most critical obstacles that limit the commercialization of graphene is that CVD graphene contains too many vacancies or sp³ -type defects. Therefore, further investigation of the growth mechanism is still required to control the defects of graphene. During the growth of graphene, sublimation of the Cu catalyst to produce Cu vapor occurs inevitably because the process temperature is close to the melting point of Cu. However, to date few studies have investigated the effects of Cu vapor on graphene growth. In this study, how the Cu vapor produced by sublimation affects the chemical vapor deposition of graphene on Cu surfaces is investigated. It is found that the presence of Cu vapor enlarges the graphene grains and enhances the efficiency of the defect-healing of graphene by CH₄ . It is elucidated that these effects are due to the removal by Cu vapor of carbon adatoms from the Cu surface and oxygen-functionalized carbons from graphene. Finally, these insights are used to develop a method for the synthesis of uniform and high-quality graphene.

Antilisterial effects of hop alpha and beta acids in turkey slurry at 7 and 37°C

Chemical components of hop resins effectively inhibit the growth of L. monocytogenes in microbiological culture media. This study was conducted to investigate antilisterial activities of hop α- and β-acid in turkey slurry. Turkey slurries were inoculated with L. monocytogenes, formulated with hop α- or β-acid from 0 to 1,000 ppm, and incubated at 37°C for 24 h or at 7°C for 12 days. During storage at 37°C for 24 h, L. monocytogenes populations were reduced from 2.40 log CFU/g to non-detectable (<1 log CFU/g) in α-acid at ≥750 ppm and β-acid at 1,000 ppm, whereas the control (0 ppm) allowed the pathogen to grow to 8.0 log CFU/g. During storage at 7°C for 12 d, the slurry treated with α-acid at ≥100 ppm and β-acid at ≥500 ppm showed listeristatic effects, while listericidal effects were observed in the slurries at 1,000 ppm, regardless of hop acid type. Hop α-acid ≤ 50 ppm and β-acid ≤ 100 ppm failed to inhibit L. monocytogenes, and the pattern of bacterial growth was similar to that of control with no significant difference (P > 0.05). Based on these results, the concentration of α-acid > 100 ppm or β-acid > 500 ppm is minimally required to inhibit L. monocytogenes when turkey batters are formulated with hop acids as a single antilisterial agent prior to cooking and storage at 7°C.

Direct Growth of Highly Stable Patterned Graphene on Dielectric Insulators using a Surface-Adhered Solid Carbon Source

A novel method is described for the direct growth of patterned graphene on dielectric substrates by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) in the presence of Cu vapor and using a solid aromatic carbon source, 1,2,3,4-tetraphenylnapthalene (TPN), as the precursor. The UV/O₃ treatment of the TPN film both crosslinks TPN and results in a strong interaction between the substrate and the TPN that prevents complete sublimation of the carbon source from the substrate during CVD. Substrate-adhered crosslinked TPN is successfully converted to graphene on the substrate without any organic contamination. The graphene synthesized by this method shows excellent mechanical and chemical stability. This process also enables the simultaneous patterning of graphene materials, which can thus be used as transparent electrodes for electronic devices. The proposed method for the synthesis directly on substrates of patterned graphene is expected to have wide applications in organic and soft hybrid electronics.

Hospital variation in cost of childbirth and contributing factors: a cross-sectional study

OBJECTIVE

To examine hospital variation in cost of childbirth hospitalisations and identify factors that contribute to the variation.

DESIGN

Cross-sectional analysis of linked birth certificate and hospital discharge data.

SETTING

Two hundred and twenty hospitals in California delivering ≥ 100 births per year.

POPULATION

A total of 405 908 nulliparous term singleton vertex births during 2010-2012.

METHODS

Cost of childbirth hospitalisations was compared across hospitals after accounting for differences in patient clinical risk factors. Relative contributions of patient sociodemographic, obstetric intervention, birth attendant and institutional characteristics to variation in cost were assessed by further adjusting for these factors in hierarchical generalised linear models.

MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES

Cost of childbirth hospitalisation.

RESULTS

Median risk-standardised cost of childbirth was $7149 among the hospitals (10^th -90th percentile range: $4760-$10,644). Maternal sociodemographic characteristics and type of birth attendant did not explain hospital variation in cost. Adjustment for obstetric interventions overall reduced within-hospital variance by 15.8% (P < 0.001), while adjusting for caesarean delivery alone reduced within-hospital variance by 14.4% (P < 0.001). However, obstetric interventions did not explain between-hospital variation in cost. In contrast, adjustment for institutional characteristics reduced between-hospital variance by 30.3% (P = 0.002). Hospital type of ownership, teaching/urban-rural status, neonatal care capacity and geographic region were most impactful. Risk-standardised cost was positively correlated with risk-standardised rate of severe newborn morbidities (correlation coefficient 0.22, P = 0.001), but not associated with risk-standardised rate of severe maternal morbidities.

CONCLUSIONS

Cost of childbirth hospitalisations varied widely among hospitals in California. Institutional characteristics significantly contributed to this variation. Higher-cost hospitals did not have better outcomes, suggesting potential opportunities to enhance value in care.

Comprehensive analysis of proton range uncertainties related to stopping-power-ratio estimation using dual-energy CT imaging

The dual-energy CT-based (DECT) approach holds promise in reducing the overall uncertainty in proton stopping-power-ratio (SPR) estimation as compared to the conventional stoichiometric calibration approach. The objective of this study was to analyze the factors contributing to uncertainty in SPR estimation using the DECT-based approach and to derive a comprehensive estimate of the range uncertainty associated with SPR estimation in treatment planning. Two state-of-the-art DECT-based methods were selected and implemented on a Siemens SOMATOM Force DECT scanner. The uncertainties were first divided into five independent categories. The uncertainty associated with each category was estimated for lung, soft and bone tissues separately. A single composite uncertainty estimate was eventually determined for three tumor sites (lung, prostate and head-and-neck) by weighting the relative proportion of each tissue group for that specific site. The uncertainties associated with the two selected DECT methods were found to be similar, therefore the following results applied to both methods. The overall uncertainty (1σ) in SPR estimation with the DECT-based approach was estimated to be 3.8%, 1.2% and 2.0% for lung, soft and bone tissues, respectively. The dominant factor contributing to uncertainty in the DECT approach was the imaging uncertainties, followed by the DECT modeling uncertainties. Our study showed that the DECT approach can reduce the overall range uncertainty to approximately 2.2% (2σ) in clinical scenarios, in contrast to the previously reported 1%.

Variation in quality report viewing by providers and correlation with NICU quality metrics

BACKGROUND

To examine variation in quality report viewing and assess correlation between provider report viewing and neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) quality.

METHODS

Variation in report viewing sessions for 129 California Perinatal Quality Care Collaborative NICUs was examined. NICUs were stratified into tertiles based on their antenatal steroid (ANS) use and hospital-acquired infection (HAI) rates to compare report viewing session counts.

RESULTS

The number of report viewing sessions initiated by providers varied widely over a 2-year period (median=11; mean=25.5; s.d.=45.19 sessions). Report viewing was not associated with differences in ANS use. Facilities with low HAI rates had less frequent report viewing. Facilities with high report views had significant improvements in HAI rates over time.

CONCLUSIONS

Available audit and feedback reports are utilized inconsistently across California NICUs despite evidence that report viewing is associated with improvements in quality of care delivery. Further studies are needed for reports to reach their theoretical potential.

Utility of third trimester sonographic measurements for predicting SGA in cases of fetal gastroschisis

OBJECTIVE

To assess the accuracy of different sonographic estimated fetal weight (EFW) cutoffs, and combinations of EFW and biometric measurements for predicting small for gestational age (SGA) in fetal gastroschisis.

STUDY DESIGN

Gastroschisis cases from two centers were included. The sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values (PPV and NPV) were calculated for different EFW cutoffs, as well as EFW and biometric measurement combinations.

RESULTS

Seventy gastroschisis cases were analyzed. An EFW<10% had 94% sensitivity, 43% specificity, 33% PPV and 96% NPV for SGA at delivery. Using an EFW cutoff of <5% improved the specificity to 63% and PPV to 41%, but decreased the sensitivity to 88%. Combining an abdominal circumference (AC) or femur length (FL) z-score less than -2 with the total EFW improved the specificity and PPV but decreased the sensitivity.

CONCLUSION

A combination of a small AC or FL along with EFW increases the specificity and PPV, but decreases the sensitivity of predicting SGA.

Effects of delivery room quality improvement on premature infant outcomes

OBJECTIVE

Delivery room management interventions have been successfully implemented via collaborative quality improvement (QI) projects. However, it is unknown whether these successes translate to reductions in neonatal morbidity and mortality.

STUDY DESIGN

This was a prospective pre-post intervention study of three nonrandomized hospital groups within the California Perinatal Quality Care Collaborative. A collaborative QI model (Collaborative QI) was compared with a single-site QI model (NICU QI) and a non-participant population when implementing evidence-based delivery room practices. The intervention period was between June 2011 and May 2012. Infants born with gestational age between 22 weeks 0 days and 29 weeks 6 days and birth weight ⩽1500 g were included. Outcomes were mortality and select morbidities (bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH), retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) and necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC)). Outcomes were compared between the baseline (January 2010 to May 2011) and post-intervention period (June 2012 to May 2013) within each comparison group.

RESULTS

Ninety-five hospitals were included with 4222 infants in the baseline period and 4186 infants in the post-intervention period. The Collaborative QI group had significantly reduced odds of developing BPD post-intervention (odds ratio (OR) 0.8, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.65 to 0.99) or composite BPD-death (OR 0.83, 95% CI 0.69 to 1.00). In both the Collaborative QI and non-participants there were also reductions in IVH, severe IVH, composite severe IVH-death, severe ROP and composite severe ROP-death.

CONCLUSION

Hospitals dedicated to improving delivery room practices can impact neonatal outcomes.

Characteristics of neonatal transports in California

OBJECTIVE

To describe the current scope of neonatal inter-facility transports.

STUDY DESIGN

California databases were used to characterize infants transported in the first week after birth from 2009 to 2012.

RESULTS

Transport of the 22 550 neonates was classified as emergent 9383 (41.6%), urgent 8844 (39.2%), scheduled 2082 (9.2%) and other 85 (0.4%). In addition, 2152 (9.5%) were initiated for delivery attendance. Most transports originated from hospitals without a neonatal intensive care unit (68%), with the majority transferred to regional centers (66%). Compared with those born and cared for at the birth hospital, the odds of being transported were higher if the patient's mother was Hispanic, <20 years old, or had a previous C-section. An Apgar score <3 at 10 min of age, cardiac compressions in the delivery room, or major birth defect were also risk factors for neonatal transport.

CONCLUSION

As many neonates receive transport within the first week after birth, there may be opportunities for quality improvement activities in this area.

Inhaled nitric oxide use in preterm infants in California neonatal intensive care units

OBJECTIVE

To describe inhaled nitric oxide (iNO) exposure in preterm infants and variation in neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) use.

STUDY DESIGN

This was a retrospective cohort study of infants, 22 to 33+6/7 weeks of gestational age (GA), during 2005 to 2013. Analyses were stratified by GA and included population characteristics, iNO use over time and hospital variation.

RESULTS

Of the 65 824 infants, 1718 (2.61%) received iNO. Infants, 22 to 24+6/7 weeks of GA, had the highest incidence of iNO exposure (6.54%). Community NICUs (n=77, median hospital use rate 0.7%) used less iNO than regional NICUs (n=23, median hospital use rate 5.8%). In 22 to 24+6/7 weeks of GA infants, the median rate in regional centers was 10.6% (hospital interquartile range 3.8% to 22.6%).

CONCLUSION

iNO exposure varied with GA and hospital level, with the most use in extremely premature infants and regional centers. Variation reflects a lack of consensus regarding the appropriate use of iNO for preterm infants.

Facet-Mediated Growth of High-Quality Monolayer Graphene on Arbitrarily Rough Copper Surfaces

A synthetic approach for high-quality graphene on rough Cu surfaces via chemical vapor deposition is proposed. High-quality graphene is synthesized on rough Cu surfaces by inducing surface faceting of Cu surfaces prior to graphene growth. The electron mobility of synthesized graphene on the rough Cu surfaces is enhanced to 10 335 cm(2) V(-1) s(-1).

Enhanced Organic Solar Cell Stability through the Effective Blocking of Oxygen Diffusion using a Self-Passivating Metal Electrode

A new and simple strategy for enhancing the stability of organic solar cells (OSCs) was developed by using self-passivating metal top electrodes. Systematic investigations on O2 permeability of Al top electrodes revealed that the main pathways for oxidation-induced degradation could be greatly suppressed by simply controlling the nanoscale morphology of the Al electrode. The population of nanoscale pinholes among Al grains, which critically decided the diffusion of O2 molecules toward the Al-organic interfaces that are vulnerable to oxidation, was successfully regulated by rapidly depositing Al or promoting lateral growth among the Al grains, accompanied by increasing the deposition thickness. Our observations suggested that the stability of OSCs with conventional architectures might be greatly enhanced simply by controlling the fabrication conditions of the Al top electrode, without the aid of additional secondary treatments.

Asian-Pacific clinical practice guidelines on the management of hepatitis B: a 2015 update

Worldwide, some 240 million people have chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV), with the highest rates of infection in Africa and Asia. Our understanding of the natural history of HBV infection and the potential for therapy of the resultant disease is continuously improving. New data have become available since the previous APASL guidelines for management of HBV infection were published in 2012. The objective of this manuscript is to update the recommendations for the optimal management of chronic HBV infection. The 2015 guidelines were developed by a panel of Asian experts chosen by the APASL. The clinical practice guidelines are based on evidence from existing publications or, if evidence was unavailable, on the experts' personal experience and opinion after deliberations. Manuscripts and abstracts of important meetings published through January 2015 have been evaluated. This guideline covers the full spectrum of care of patients infected with hepatitis B, including new terminology, natural history, screening, vaccination, counseling, diagnosis, assessment of the stage of liver disease, the indications, timing, choice and duration of single or combination of antiviral drugs, screening for HCC, management in special situations like childhood, pregnancy, coinfections, renal impairment and pre- and post-liver transplant, and policy guidelines. However, areas of uncertainty still exist, and clinicians, patients, and public health authorities must therefore continue to make choices on the basis of the evolving evidence. The final clinical practice guidelines and recommendations are presented here, along with the relevant background information.

Radiofrequency ablation as an alternative to hepatic resection for single small hepatocellular carcinomas

Background

This study aimed to investigate whether radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is an alternative to surgical resection for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) within the context of current guidelines.

Methods

This retrospective study included patients with normal portal pressure and serum bilirubin level who initially underwent liver resection or RFA for a single HCC of maximum size 3 cm. Between-group differences in cumulative rates of survival and recurrence specific for HCC were analysed in the entire cohort and in a propensity score-matched cohort.

Results

A total of 604 patients were enrolled, 273 in the liver resection group and 331 in the RFA group. The 5- and 10-year HCC-specific survival rates for the resection and RFA groups were 87·6 versus 82·1 per cent and 59·0 versus 61·2 per cent respectively (P = 0·214), whereas overall 5- and 10-year recurrence-free survival rates for the corresponding groups were 60·6 versus 39·4 per cent and 37·5 versus 25·1 per cent respectively (P &lt; 0·001). In the propensity score-matched cohort (152 pairs), there were no differences in HCC-specific survival (hazard ratio (HR) 1·03 for RFAversus resection; P = 0·899), whereas recurrence-free survival again differed between the treatment groups (HR 1·75; P &lt; 0·001). RFA was independently associated with poorer outcomes in terms of treatment-site recurrence-free survival (adjusted HR 1·66; P = 0·026), but not non-treatment-site recurrence-free survival (adjusted HR 1·15; P = 0·354).

Conclusion

Although RFA carries a higher risk of treatment-site recurrence than hepatic resection, it provides comparable overall survival in patients with a single small HCC without portal hypertension or a raised bilirubin level.

Improvement of turkey breast meat quality and cooked gel functionality using hot-boning, quarter sectioning, crust-freeze-air-chilling and cold-batter-mincing technologies

The effect of rapid carcass chilling on breast meat quality was evaluated using commercial (COMM) and random-bred (RB) turkeys. Immediately after slaughter, 48 turkeys from COMM or RB line were randomly subjected to one of four chilling methods: 1) water-immersion chilling (WIC) of the carcasses at 0°C ice slurry, 2) WIC after temperature abuse (TA) of the carcasses at 40°C for 30 min (TA-WIC), 3) hot-boning, quarter sectioning, and crust-freeze-air-chilling (HB-(1)/4CFAC) of breast fillets at -12°C, and 4) HB-(1)/4CFAC of fillets after TA of carcasses (TA-HB-(1)/4CFAC). The TA increased carcass and fillet temperatures by ∼1.3 and ∼4.1°C, respectively, regardless of turkey line, whereas HB-(1)/4CFAC of fillets required 28 and 33% of carcass chilling time for COMM and RB, respectively. During chilling, COMM breast pH rapidly reduced from 6.04 to 5.82, resulting in a significantly lower pH than RB after chilling (P < 0.05), whereas COMM R-value sharply increased from 1.17 to 1.43, causing no difference from RB (P > 0.05). Significantly higher L* value and cooking yield (P < 0.05) were seen in the samples of TA and WIC than those of no TA and HB-(1)/4CFAC, respectively, with no difference observed between COMM and RB fillets (P > 0.05). Higher values of hardness, gumminess, and chewiness were found for RB, no TA, and HB-(1)/4CFAC gels than COMM, TA, and WIC, respectively. These results generally indicated that protein quality and textural properties of turkey fillets were improved, regardless of strains or temperature abuse, using HB-(1)/4CFAC technology.
