Abstract
Hyssop (Hyssopus officinalis L.) and oregano (Origanum vulgare L.), traditionally used for their antimicrobial properties, can be considered viable candidates for nanotechnology applications, in particular for the phytosynthesis of metal nanoparticles. The present work aims to evaluate the potential application of hyssop and oregano for the phytosynthesis of silver nanoparticles, as well as to evaluate the biological activities of their extracts and obtained nanoparticles (antioxidant potential, as well as cell viability, inflammation level and cytotoxicity in human fibroblasts HFIB-G cell line studies). In order to obtain natural extracts, two extraction methods were applied (classical temperature extraction and microwave-assisted extraction), with the extraction method having a major influence on their composition, as demonstrated by both the total phenolic compounds (significantly higher for the microwave-assisted extraction; the oregano extracts had consistently higher TPC values, compared with the hyssop extracts) and in terms of individual components identified via HPLC. The obtained nanoparticles ware characterized via X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), with the lowest dimension nanoparticles being recorded for the nanoparticles obtained using the oregano microwave extract (crystallite size 2.94 nm through XRD, average diameter 10 nm via TEM). The extract composition and particle size also influenced the antioxidant properties (over 60% DPPH inhibition being recorded for the NPs obtained using the oregano microwave extract). Cell viability was not affected at the lowest tested concentrations, which can be correlated with the nitric oxide level. Cell membrane integrity was not affected after exposure to classic temperature hyssop extract-NPs, while the other samples led to a significant LDH increase.

Abstract
This research aimed to develop miconazole-based microemulsions using oleic acid as a natural lipophilic phase and a stabilizer mixture comprising Tween 20 and PEG 400 to solubilize miconazole as an antifungal agent known for its activity in oral candidiasis and to improve its bioavailability. The formulation and preparation process was combined with a mathematical approach using a 23-full factorial plan. Fluid and gel-like microemulsions were obtained and analyzed considering pH, conductivity, and refractive index, followed by extensive analyses focused on droplet size, zeta potential, rheological behavior, and goniometry. In vitro release tests were performed to assess their biopharmaceutical characteristics. Independent variables coded X1-Oleic acid (%, w/w), X2-Tween 20 (%, w/w), and X3-PEG 400 (%, w/w) were analyzed in relationship with three main outputs like mean droplet size, work of adhesion, and diffusion coefficient by combining statistical tools with response surface methodology. The microemulsion containing miconazole base-2%, oleic acid-5%, Tween 20-40%, PEG 400-20%, and water-33% exhibited a mean droplet size of 119.6 nm, a work of adhesion of 71.98 mN/m, a diffusion coefficient of 2.11·10-5 cm2/s, and together with remarked attributes of two gel-like systems formulated with higher oil concentrations, modeled the final optimization step of microemulsions as potential systems for buccal delivery.

Abstract
Presently, notwithstanding the progress regarding wound-healing management, the treatment of the majority of skin lesions still represents a serious challenge for biomedical and pharmaceutical industries. Thus, the attention of the researchers has turned to the development of novel materials based on cellulose derivatives. Cellulose derivatives are semi-synthetic biopolymers, which exhibit high solubility in water and represent an advantageous alternative to water-insoluble cellulose. These biopolymers possess excellent properties, such as biocompatibility, biodegradability, sustainability, non-toxicity, non-immunogenicity, thermo-gelling behavior, mechanical strength, abundance, low costs, antibacterial effect, and high hydrophilicity. They have an efficient ability to absorb and retain a large quantity of wound exudates in the interstitial sites of their networks and can maintain optimal local moisture. Cellulose derivatives also represent a proper scaffold to incorporate various bioactive agents with beneficial therapeutic effects on skin tissue restoration. Due to these suitable and versatile characteristics, cellulose derivatives are attractive and captivating materials for wound-healing applications. This review presents an extensive overview of recent research regarding promising cellulose derivatives-based materials for the development of multiple biomedical and pharmaceutical applications, such as wound dressings, drug delivery devices, and tissue engineering.

Abstract
With a fascinating complexity, governed by multiple physiological processes, the skin is considered a mantle with protective functions which during lifetime are frequently impaired, triggering dermatologic disorders. As one of the most prevalent dermatologic conditions worldwide, characterized by a complex pathogenesis and a high recurrence, acne can affect the patient's quality of life. Smart topical vehicles represent a good option in the treatment of a versatile skin condition. By surpassing the stratum corneum known for diffusional resistance, a superior topical bioavailability can be obtained at the affected place. In this direction, the literature study presents microemulsions as a part of a condensed group of modern formulations. Microemulsions are appreciated for their superior profile in matters of drug delivery, especially for challenging substances with hydrophilic or lipophilic structures. Formulated as transparent and thermodynamically stable systems, using simplified methods of preparation, microemulsions have a simple and clear appearance. Their unique structures can be explained as a function of the formulation parameters which were found to be the mainstay of a targeted therapy.

Abstract
In an attempt to develop drug delivery systems that bypass the blood–brain barrier (BBB) and prevent liver and intestinal degradation, it was concluded that nasal medication meets these criteria and can be used for drugs that have these drawbacks. The aim of this review is to present the influence of the properties of chitosan and its derivatives (mucoadhesion, permeability enhancement, surface tension, and zeta potential) on the development of suitable nasal drug delivery systems and on the nasal bioavailability of various active pharmaceutical ingredients. Interactions between chitosan and proteins, lipids, antigens, and other molecules lead to complexes that have their own applications or to changing characteristics of the substances involved in the bond (conformational changes, increased stability or solubility, etc.). Chitosan and its derivatives have their own actions (antibacterial, antifungal, immunostimulant, antioxidant, etc.) and can be used as such or in combination with other molecules from the same class to achieve a synergistic effect. The applicability of the properties is set out in the second part of the paper, where nasal formulations based on chitosan are described (vaccines, hydrogels, nanoparticles, nanostructured lipid carriers (NLC), powders, emulsions, etc.).

Abstract
The main inconvenience of conventional eye drops is the rapid washout of the drugs due to nasolacrimal drainage or ophthalmic barriers. The ocular drug bioavailability can be improved by either prolonging retention time in the cul-de-sac or by increasing the ocular permeability. The focus of this review is to highlight some chitosan-based drug delivery approaches that proved to have good clinical efficacy and high potential for use in ophthalmology. They are exemplified by recent studies exploring in-depth the techniques and mechanisms in order to improve ocular bioavailability of the active substances. Used alone or in combination with other compounds with synergistic action, chitosan enables ocular retention time and corneal permeability. Associated with other stimuli-responsive polymers, it enhances the mechanical strength of the gels. Chitosan and its derivatives increase drug permeability through the cornea by temporarily opening tight junctions between epithelial cells. Different types of chitosan-based colloidal systems have the potential to overcome the ocular barriers without disturbing the vision process. Chitosan also plays a key role in improving corneal wound healing by stimulating the migration of keratinocytes when it is used alone or in combination with other compounds with synergistic action.

Abstract
Ocular in situ gels are a promising alternative to overcome drawbacks of conventional eye drops because they associate the advantages of solutions such as accuracy and reproducibility of dosing, or ease of administration with prolonged contact time of ointments. Chitosan is a natural polymer suitable for use in ophthalmic formulations due to its biocompatibility, biodegradability, mucoadhesive character, antibacterial and antifungal properties, permeation enhancement and corneal wound healing effects. The combination of chitosan, pH-sensitive polymer, with other stimuli-responsive polymers leads to increased mechanical strength of formulations and an improved therapeutic effect due to prolonged ocular contact time. This review describes in situ gelling systems resulting from the association of chitosan with various stimuli-responsive polymers with emphasis on the mechanism of gel formation and application in ophthalmology. It also comprises the main techniques for evaluation of chitosan in situ gels, along with requirements of safety and ocular tolerability.

Abstract
Since ancient times humans observed animal and plants features and tried to adapt them according to their own needs. Biomimetics represents the foundation of many inventions from various fields: From transportation devices (helicopter, airplane, submarine) and flying techniques, to sports' wear industry (swimming suits, scuba diving gear, Velcro closure system), bullet proof vests made from Kevlar etc. It is true that nature provides numerous noteworthy models (shark skin, spider web, lotus leaves), referring both to the plant and animal kingdom. This review paper summarizes a few of "nature's interventions" in human evolution, regarding understanding of surface wettability and development of innovative special surfaces. Empirical models are described in order to reveal the science behind special wettable surfaces (superhydrophobic /superhydrophilic). Materials and methods used in order to artificially obtain special wettable surfaces are described in correlation with plants' and animals' unique features. Emphasis is placed on joining superhydrophobic and superhydrophilic surfaces, with important applications in cell culturing, microorganism isolation/separation and molecule screening techniques. Bio-inspired wettability is presented as a constitutive part of traditional devices/systems, intended to improve their characteristics and extend performances.

Abstract
Liquid marbles are versatile structures demonstrating a pseudo-Leidenfrost wetting regime formed by encapsulating microscale volumes of liquid in a particle shell. The liquid core is completely separated from the exterior through air pockets. The external phase consists of hydrophobic particles, in most cases, or hydrophilic ones distributed as aggregates. Their interesting features arise from the double solid-fluid character. Thus, these interesting formations, also known as “dry waters”, have gained attention in surface science. This review paper summarizes a series of proposed formulations, fabrication techniques and properties, in correlation with already discovered and emerging applications. A short general review of the surface properties of powders (contact angle, superficial tension) is proposed, followed by a presentation of liquid marbles’ properties (superficial characteristics, elasticity, self-propulsion etc.). Finally, applications of liquid marbles are discussed, mainly as helpful and yet to be exploited structures in the pharmaceutical and medical field. Innovative pharmaceutical forms (Pickering emulsions) are also means of use taken into account as applications which need further investigation.

Abstract
Today, more than ever, knowledge that interfaces appearance analysis is a crucial point in human-computer interaction field has been accepted. As nowadays virtually anyone can publish information on the web, the credibility role has grown increasingly important in relation to the web-based content. Areas like trust, credibility, and behavior, doubled by overall impression and user expectation are today in the spotlight of research compared to the last period, when other pragmatic areas such as usability and utility were considered. Credibility has been discussed as a theoretical construct in the field of communication in the past decades and revealed that people tend to evaluate the credibility of communication primarily by the communicator's expertise. Other factors involved in the content communication process are trustworthiness and dynamism as well as various other criteria but to a lower extent. In this brief review, factors like web page aesthetics, browsing experiences and user experience are considered.

Abstract
GIST are rare mesenchymal tumors of the digestive tract (less than 1% of the digestive tract neoplasia). Of these, less than 1% are found in the esophagus. Surgery is the main treatment of GIST and is supported by targeted therapy with tyrosine kinase inhibitors like imatinibmesylate. We present the case of a female patient of 51 years, admitted in our clinic for a bulky tumor in the posterior mediastinum, diagnosed after investigations performed for fatigue for the great efforts. Clinical examination was unspecific. Chest X-ray and thoraco-abdominal CT identified a widening of the mediastinum through a posterior mediastinal tumor mass, determining a deviation to the left of the thoracic esophagus without causing not abledysphagia or respiratory symptoms. It was decided surgery by thoracotomy in V right intercostal space and total excision of the tumor was performed. Histopathology examination confirmed the preoperative suspicion of esophageal GIST. Prognosis is reserved, the risk of relapse is very high given the fact that the tumor was extracted fragmented. Currently the patient is under treatment with imatinib mesylate and entered into clinical and imaging follow-up program, according to clinical guidelines.

Abstract
The new tendency in rehabilitation involves non-invasive tools that, if applied early after stroke, promote neurorecovery. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation and transcranial direct current stimulation may correct the disruption of cortical excitability and effectively contribute to the restoration of movement and speech. The present paper analyses the results of non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) trials, highlighting different aspects related to the repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation frequency, transcranial direct current stimulation polarity, the period and stimulation places in acute and subacute ischemic strokes. The risk of adverse events, the association with motor or language recovery specific training, and the cumulative positive effect evaluation are also discussed.

Abstract
RATIONALE Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is used alone or in combination with physiotherapy for rehabilitation of stroke patients. TMS mapping can also quantify the excitability of the motor area in both the ipsilesional (IL) and contralateral (CL) hemisphere. OBJECTIVE This study is the first to measure the dynamics of cortical excitability by TMS mapping before and after treatment with low-frequency (LF) rTMS in the contralesional hemisphere at three different timepoints. Furthermore, the patients were clinically evaluated during the same visit as the mapping to establish both short and long-term outcomes after rTMS treatment. METHODS AND RESULTS A total of 16 participants with acute ischemic stroke were assessed 10 days post-stroke by TMS mapping. The patients were randomized into two equal groups: a real rTMS group and a sham group. The rTMS group received LF-rTMS to the contralesional hemisphere for 10 days, starting on the first day after the first mapping. Each subject was also evaluated by mapping on days 45 and 90 after stroke onset. The primary clinical outcome measured was the Fugl-Meyer Assessment for Upper Extremity (FMA-UE) on days 10, 45 and 90 post-stroke. At 10 days after stroke onset, both groups presented low excitability in the lesion side and high excitability in the non-affected side. In the real rTMS group, at 45 days after stroke, a downward trend in the excitability of the contralesional hemisphere and an upward trend in the excitability of the lesioned side were observed. At 90 days after stroke, a tendency toward balanced excitability between both hemispheres was observed. In the sham group, at both 45 and 90 days, we observed increased excitability in the non-affected side compared to the side with the lesioned motor area. At 45 days, the real rTMS group demonstrated a better recovery of the upper limb motor function than the sham group, but at 90 days, there was no significant difference between the two groups. DISCUSSION These results demonstrated that LF-rTMS treatment enhances rebalance of the excitability patterns in both hemispheres and led us to question the "one size fits all" approach widely used in rTMS interventions. Abstract
Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disease of the central nervous system. Although PD is commonly characterized by well-known clinical manifestations, it also involves imbalances in the cortico-subcortical excitation and inhibition processes. Functional electrical stimulation can improve the motor condition of PD patients as a supplement to levodopa therapy. In this study, clinical (using specific tests) and paraclinical (using single-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation) examinations revealed an improvement in the motor symptoms and the bilateral activation of the primary motor areas of the upper limbs after unilateral functional electrical stimulation in PD patients.

Abstract
An important aspect to be considered in the healing of acute or chronic cutaneous wounds is the associated potential infection management. Collagen, the most abundant protein of the extracellular matrix, with proven properties in wounds healing and tissues regeneration, is one of the most widely used biopolymers as carrier matrix for controlled drug delivery systems. For this reason, the purpose of the current paper is the development of some minocycline-loaded collagen topical sponges uncross-linked and cross-linked with glutaraldehyde, obtained by lyophilization of appropriate hydrogels prepared according to the 3-factor, 3-level face-centered central composite design. The determination of drug delivery from the sponges was performed by assessment of some physicochemical parameters involved in this complex process: sponges surface wettability, swelling ratio and the percentage of minocycline released from the sponges. The application of the response surface methodology allowed the setting of the formulation parameters optimum ranges, which ensure an adequate minocycline release to the application site. The design robustness was checked using the signal-to-noise ratio performance indicator. The optimum collagen-minocycline sponges determined based on the statistical screening technique could be suitable for topical drug delivery in infected wounds healing with moderate to high exudate.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION A solitary primary hydatid cyst in the abdominal wall is an exceptional entity, even in countries where the Echinococcus infection has a high rate, being considered an endemic disease. CASE PRESENTATION We report a case of a 70-year-old Caucasian man who presented to our clinic with a slow-growing painless parietal mass in the abdominal wall, right flank area. The diagnosis of cystic mass was established at the ultrasound exam. There were no findings that could describe a hydatic cyst. The punction at the surgical intervention revealed a "clear, stone liquid like"; due to the high risk of major injury of the abdominal wall, we performed partial resection of the outer cystic wall, proligerous membrane removal and drainage. The patient had an uneventful post-operative recovery. The histopathology confirmed the suspected diagnosis. CONCLUSION Hydatid cyst should be considered in the differential diagnosis of every abdominal intraparietal cystic mass, especially in regions where the disease is endemic. The best treatment is the total excision of the cyst preserving an intact wall (complete cystectomy). Otherwise, removing the proligerous membrane with partial pericyst's resection (partial pericystectomy) and drainage should be considered.

Abstract
Topical delivery systems for the treatment of different infected cutaneous wounds based on natural biopolymers are widely studied. The development of some topical hydrogels with type I collagen and minocycline by the experimental design technique, based on response surface methodology and Taguchi's approach, and the evaluation of their kinetic properties is presented. The concentrations of polymer, drug and cross-linking agent were selected as independent variables for the face centered composite design and low, medium and high concentration as variation levels for each factor. Minocycline kinetic release was investigated using a modified Franz diffusion cell. The drug release followed the Higuchi model. Three formulations having optimal minocycline release profiles were selected. They can be used as potential drug topical release systems for the treatment of infected cutaneous tissue.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Initially considered experimental, liver transplantation (LT) has become the treatment of choice for the patients with end-stage liver diseases. MATERIAL AND METHODS Between April 2000 and October 2009, 200 LTs (10 reLTs) were performed in 190 patients, this study being retrospective. There were transplanted 110 men and 80 women, 159 adults and 31 children with the age between 1 and 64 years old (mean age--39.9). The main indication in the adult group was represented by viral cirrhosis, while the pediatric series the etiology was mainly glycogenosis and biliary atresia. There were performed 143 whole graft LTs, 46 living donor LTs, 6 split LTs, 4 reduced LTs and one domino LT RESULTS: The postoperative survival was 90% (170 patients). The patient and graft one-year and five-year survivals were 76.9%, 73.6% and 71%, 68.2%, respectively. The early complications occurred in 127 patients (67%). The late complications were recorded in 71 patients (37.3%). The intraoperative and early postoperative mortality rate was 9.5% (18 patients). CONCLUSIONS The Romanian liver transplantation program from Fundeni includes all types of current surgical techniques and the results are comparable with those from other international centers.

Abstract
Since the early 1990s the persistent reports about the irreversibly degrading Black Sea have started to disappear. A large set of data, reflecting the temporal and spatial variability of microalgae and hydrochemical parameters in Western Black Sea waters (WBS), collected in 2001-2002 (EU 5th FP project "daNubs"), allows us to compare the present-day ecosystem functioning to previous ones and to certainly conclude on positive signs of relaxation. The years 2001 and 2002 were without ample, negative biological and hydrochemical events in the WBS. Nutrient general trend was a decreasing one since the late 1980s, and inorganic phosphorus and nitrogen concentrations were frequently below the method detection limits during summer autumn periods of 2001-2002. The shelf waters were properly oxygenated. The phytoplankton community was producing biomass in a decreasing tendency, especially obviously since 1995. Simultaneously, there was an increase in Si:P and Si:N molar ratios and concurrent increase in the diversity of mass algal species (mainly diatoms) but only a few of them generated exceptional blooms. Reduction of the ratios between phytoplankton and zooplankton biomasses became evident. The observed ecological status in 2001-2002 confirms that the Black Sea is no longer a reference point for progressive water quality deterioration.

Abstract
About 30% of couple infertilities are of male origin, some of them caused by genetic abnormalities of the Y chromosome. Deletions in AZF region can cause severe spermatogenic defects ranging from non-obstructive azoospermia to oligospermia. The intracytoplasmatic sperm injection technique (ICSI) is rapidly becoming a versatile procedure for human assisted reproduction in case of male infertility. The use of ICSI allows Y chromosome defects to be passed from father. The goal of our study is to evaluate the frequency of microdeletions in the long arm of Y chromosome, within the AZF regions, in these cases of infertilities, using molecular genetics techniques. Thirty infertile men with azoospermia or oligozoospermia, determined by spermogram, were studied after exclusion of patients with endocrine or obstructive causes of infertility. Peripheral blood DNA was extracted from each patient, then amplified by multiplex PCR with STS genomic markers from the Y chromosome AZF zones. Each case was checked by multiplex PCR through coamplification with the SRY marker. Three men with microdeletions of the long arm of the Y chromosome were diagnosed among the 30 patients, corresponding to a proportion of 10%. The relatively high proportion of microdeletions found in our population suggest the need for strict patient selection to avoid unnecessary screening for long arm Y chromosome microdeletions. The molecular diagnostics was performed according to the current European Academy of Andrology laboratory guidelines for molecular diagnosis of Y chromosomal microdeletions.

Abstract
Malaria is the world's most important tropical parasitic disease. Malaria is a public health problem today in more than 90 countries. Worldwide prevalence of the disease is estimated to be in the order of 300-500 million clinical cases each year. Malaria is endemic in a total of 101 countries and territories. In Romania, malaria does not represent an important public health problem. In 1999, there were reported a total number of 32 malaria cases in Romanian people. 78% from these recognized as etiological agent Pl. falciparum. The malaria cases imported from Turkey (5) have had as etiological agent Pl. vivax. The most affected age group is between 21-50 years and a distribution by profession shows that sailor personnel accounts for 65.6% of all cases. Africa remains the most important endemic region from where the malaria cases in Romanian people are imported. An adequate chemoprophylaxis is not, yet, easy to obtain for Romanian people who are travelling abroad in endemic countries because of the lack of specific drugs (especially for resistant forms of Pl. falciparum). Even if the Romanian Ministry of Health had elaborated orders regarding malaria and Cloroquine is the usual drug administered, as chemoprophylaxis, to Romanian people who travel abroad, in each year in our country appears around 30-60 imported malaria cases. That is the cause why Romanian Ministry of Health wants to solve this problem which is the major cause of the malaria cases in Romanian people.

Abstract
The decrease of morbidity-mortality caused by gastroenteritis is in relation to the factors largely responsible for the fall in infant mortality and mortality from communicable diseases in developing countries. Nevertheless, diarrhea is still a considerable public health problem in these countries, especially among children under 5 years old. 98% of all deaths in children younger than 15 years are in the developing world. Five of the ten leading killers are communicable, perinatal, and nutritional disorders largely affecting children. The knowledge of the etiology and epidemiology of childhood diarrhea in a given area is needed to plan any measure designed to prevent or ameliorate diarrheal illness and to develop practical guidelines for the most appropriate examination procedures. In Romania, although the real data of morbidity by acute diarrhea are not known, the reports show a significant decrease in the past 10 years. In 1993, 420.2 cases at 100,000 inhabitants were reported, the most commonly affected being the children age 0-4 years. The incidence decreased to 338.5 cases at 100,000 inhabitants in 1997 (and a quite similar incidence for the first 11 month of 1998). Between 1993-1998, 527,977 cases were reported (58.1% in urban area), with a higher frequency in spring-autumn season. Antibiotics are not required in case of acute diarrhea with little or no fever. Antibiotics could be discussed for cholera-like diarrhea and are required in case of invasive bacterial diarrhea, shigellosis, cholera, and Clostridium difficile as well as diarrhea with fever and sanguinolent stools in infants or salmonella-induced diarrhea with signs of extradigestive complications. Importance of oral rehydration solution in the treatment of diarrhoeal diseases is well known. It can be applied to all types of diarrhoea, practically, without any side effects, complications, such aas hypernatraemia is avoidable. It has proved to be effective for dehydration caused by diarrhoea and for diarrhoea, too. There is a need for effective infection control policies, which include appropriate training of staff; simple surveillance systems and readily available expert advice to ensure that outbreaks are rapidly controlled. Approaches to prevention include education about risk factors, which often fails to lead to modification of risky behavior. Further regional epidemiological studies are necessary to develop more appropriate management guidelines.

Abstract
A follow-up study of Albendazol effectiveness therapy in human hydatid diseases was carry out using WHO methodology. Albendazole was given at a dose of 10 mg/Kg body/day in cycles of 28 days separated by 14 days without treatment. The efficacy of chemotherapy was evaluated by clinical improvement and changes in the cyst's morphology (detachment and collapse of the cyst membrane and increased density of the cyst fluid). We performed this study in 134 patients with hydatidosis: 17 patients with pre and post surgery treatment, 50 patients with post surgery treatment and 67 patients with chemotherapy only. Albendazole was effective in the hydatid disease; the patients with complex chemotherapy treatment did not report any secondary hydatidosis during the follow-up period (max. 2 years); the patients with exclusive chemotherapy reported 79% successful response, only 21% of them remained with unchanged cyst's size, but with modified internal structure. The therapeutic response depends of the cyst's size and its visceral site.

Abstract
Interleukin 1 beta (IL-1) and tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNF) are important for the beta cell lysis in insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM), while IL-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1ra) is considered protective by blocking the effects of IL-1. Serum concentrations and ex-vivo production of IL-1, TNF and IL-1ra were examined in 10 newly diagnosed IDDM (ND-IDDM) patients, and compared with 11 long-standing IDDM (LS-IDDM) patients and 14 healthy volunteers. Ex-vivo LPS-stimulated production of IL-1 in ND-IDDM patients was significantly increased compared with LS-IDDM patients and healthy controls, while TNF and IL-1ra synthesis did not differ significantly. IL-1ra/IL-1 ratio was significantly decreased in ND-IDDM, and returned to normal values in the LS-IDDM group. Circulating concentrations of IL-1ra in LS-IDDM patients were increased. These data suggest a proinflammatory imbalance in ND-IDDM patients and this may play an important role in beta cell loss.

Abstract
Discriminant analysis applied to SAR studies using topological descriptors allows us to plot frequency distribution diagrams: a function of the number of drugs within an interval of values of discriminant function vs. these values. We make use of these representations, pharmacological distribution diagrams (PDDs), in structurally heterogeneous groups where generally they adopt skewed Gaussian shapes or present several maxima. The maxima afford intervals of discriminant function in which exists a good expectancy to find new active drugs. A set of beta-blockers with contrasted activity has been selected to test the ability of PDDs as a visualizing technique, for the identification of new beta-blocker active compounds.

Abstract
By using spectrophotometric atomic absorption, the release of cadmium from some plastic materials (polyethylenes, PVC, polystyrene) used for manufacturing containers, wraps and household objects (which are coloured with pigments derived from cadmium compounds) was studied. Subchronic experiments (45 days) were carried out in white Wistar rats with extracts from cadmium-containing plastic in comparison with the pigment alone. The excreted cadmium in urine and the activity of some serum enzymes were determined. Histopathological changes of the main internal organs were observed. It was found that some pigments of the Papion type have the property of releasing cadmium in amounts exceeding the admitted sanitary levels, amounts which proved to be toxic, producing enzymic and histopathological changes in kidneys and testes.
