Deleterious effects of progestagen treatment in VEGF expression in corpora lutea of pregnant ewes. Reprod Domest Anim 2010; 46:481-8. Abstract
The aim of the current study was to determine the possible effects of progestagen oestrous synchronization on vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) expression during sheep luteogenesis and the peri-implantation period and the relationship with luteal function. At days 9, 11, 13, 15, 17 and 21 of pregnancy, the ovaries from 30 progestagen treated and 30 ewes cycling after cloprostenol injection were evaluated by ultrasonography and, thereafter, collected and processed for immunohistochemical evaluation of VEGF; blood samples were drawn for evaluating plasma progesterone. The progestagen-treated group showed smaller corpora lutea than cloprostenol-treated and lower progesterone secretion. The expression of VEGF in the luteal cells increased with time in the cloprostenol group, but not in the progestagen-treated group, which even showed a decrease between days 11 and 13. In progestagen-treated sheep, VEGF expression in granulosa-derived parenchymal lobule capillaries was correlated with the size of the luteal tissue, larger corpora lutea had higher expression, and tended to have a higher progesterone secretion. In conclusion, the current study indicates the existence of deleterious effects from exogenous progestagen treatments on progesterone secretion from induced corpora lutea, which correlate with alterations in the expression of VEGF in the luteal tissue and, this, presumably in the processes of neoangiogenesis and luteogenesis.

215 DELETERIOUS EFFECTS OF PROGESTAGEN TREATMENT ON FUNCTIONALITY OF PREOVULATORY FOLLICLES IN SHEEP. Reprod Fertil Dev 2010. Abstract
The use of progestagen for 14 days in protocols for estrus synchronization has been reported to affect conception rate in sheep. We evaluated the effects of progestagen treatment on the growth pattern and follicular function of preovulatory follicles (PF) and their implication for subordinated follicles (SF). Adult female sheep were randomly assigned to the following estrus synchronization groups: 1) FGA (n = 7), which received an intravaginal device of fluorogestone acetate sponges (Chronogest®, Intervet International, Boxmeer, the Netherlands) for 14 days, or 2) PGF (n = 7), which received 3 i.m. administrations of 125 μg of cloprostenol (Estrumate®, Mallinckrodt Vet GmbH, Friesoythe, Germany) 10 days apart. The third cloprostenol administration in the PGF group was given at the same time of sponge withdrawal in the FGA group (Day 0 = day of sponge withdrawal). Ultrasonographic examinations of the ovaries for assessment of follicular development were carried out daily from Days 0 to 2 by using a scanner (Aloka SSD500) equipped with a 7.5-MHz transducer adapted for transrectal examinations. Follicular function was evaluated in terms of estradiol secretion, and blood samples were taken every 12 h to determine plasma estradiol concentration from Days 0 to 2. Ovaries from all females in both groups were recovered by ovariectomy on Day 2 to determine apoptosis by immunohistochemistry for active caspase-3 in granulosa cells from SF of 3 to 5 mm in diameter. Additionally, SF were histologically classified as healthy, early, or advanced atretic. Data were analyzed by Student t-test and Pearson correlation. The total number of PF observed on Day 2 was 15 and 12 for the PGF and FGA groups, respectively. The 90.9 and 93.3% of PF recorded in the PGF and FGA groups, respectively, on Day 2 was retrospectively identified on Day 0. The 33.6 and 46.6% of those follicles from the PGF and FGA groups, respectively, corresponded to follicles >5 mm in diameter. Although mean diameter of PF was higher in the FGA group than in the PGF group (5.4 ± 0.4 mm v. 4.5 ± 0.4 mm, respectively; P < 0.01) on Day 0, PF diameter was similar between groups on Day 2. Plasma estradiol concentration was significantly higher (P < 0.05) in the PGF group on Day 1 (3.1 ± 0.2 pg/mL v. 1.7 ± 0.2 pg/mL in the FGA group) but did not differ between groups on Day 2. The growing pattern of the PF in the PGF group significantly (P < 0.05) affected the total number of SF, and there was a tendency (P = 0.08) for an increase of the total number of healthy follicles in the same group. In addition, advanced atretic follicles from the FGA group were significantly higher than those observed in the PGF group (P < 0.001). Additionally, caspase-3 immunoreactivity was higher in the FGA group than in the PGF group (P < 0.05) and it was associated with the largest SF in both groups. All of these finding are indicative of the presence of aged follicles with an extended permanence in the ovary. We concluded that the use of progestagen for 14 days in protocols for estrus synchronization in sheep affects the growth pattern and functionality of the preovulatory follicle during the follicular phase and may have a deleterious consequence on oocyte competence.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine the relationship of depression to metabolic and nutritional risk factors in older Hispanics. DESIGN Crossectional study. SETTING Subjects were part of a community-based, cognitive evaluation project that examined 301 subjects in the Eastern San Fernando Valley of Southern California. PARTICIPANTS Two elderly Hispanic groups: 53 clinically depressed, with memory complaints but not demented subjects, and 33 generally healthy, cognitively asymptomatic subjects. MEASUREMENTS The results of functional and nutritional questionnaires, a medical and neurological examination, 12-hour fasting clinical laboratory tests, MRI or CT scans, and neuropsychological testing. RESULTS Both groups were nearly identical along socio-demographic variables. However, the depressed group differed significantly from the general healthy group not only in percent of diabetics (38% vs.18%), but in the amount of poorly controlled diabetes, and the depressed group consumed about half the amount of fish that the generally healthy group did. CONCLUSIONS This study suggests that factors such as poorly controlled diabetes combined with low consumption of foods high in omega-3 fatty acid content such as sea fish may be associated with an increased risk of developing depression in late life. These factors may be socio-economically and culturally influenced and are therefore amenable to modification.

Abstract
We want to evaluate the incidence of allergic problems in a population of catering students at the beginning and after 3 and 5 years of their course. We enrolled in the study 601 students of a professional catering school: 412 in the first year and 189 in the fifth years. We used two questionnaires to investigate respiratory problems and dermatological ones. All the subjects were also patch tested with 10 aptens. The incidence of reported symptoms of allergy was higher in fifth year than in first one. We can observe a rising in positive reaction between the two group of students to Balsam Perù, Nickel, Fragrance mix and Garlic. In particular we found an higher incidence of positive patch reaction in female population. On the contrary the rising in positive reaction to Garlic is higher in male. About two third of the subjects positive to garlic present a sensitization to diallyl disulphide. The rising of positive patch test reactions to Garlic and Balsam Perù should be caused by the contact with cooking spices. The higher incidence of allergic pathology between students during fifth year of school and students at first year is probably due to scholastic practical activity.

Abstract
The evolution of the modern anaesthesiologic technique aimed to detect more manageable and less toxic aesthetic gas, but adequately efficacy. This study considered the environmental and biological evaluation of the Careggi Hospital in Florence between 1991 and 2005. The pollution threshold of each aesthetic gas used (Nitrous oxide, Isoflurane and Sevoflurane) is reduced as time passed. The higher values about the pollution threshold have been found in the ophthalmology and in the otolaryngology operating room. We observed clinical and biological data of 74 health care workers (HCW). The anaesthetists and assistants were the more exposition. We didn't found any correlation between the exposure at gas and the clinical, and biological data. Some neurological and nonspecific symptoms (like head-ache and reduction of attention threshold) appear from the clinical informations; these symptoms suggest a possible effects on the HCW' health also for low pollution threshold.

Abstract
Current study assessed differences in the response of sheep to estrus synchronization either by the administration of two doses of prostaglandin or by the insertion of an intravaginal progestagen sponge. The preovulatory follicular dynamics and estradiol secretion, the ovulatory response and progesterone secretion and the number and quality of embryos were studied in 27 ewes treated with two doses of 100 microg of cloprostenol, 10 days apart, and in 29 sheep treated with progestagen sponges for 14 days. Percentage of sheep responding to the synchronization treatments with signs of estrus behaviour was similar between both groups (81.5% versus 72.4%, respectively). The use of progestagen resulted in a higher diameter of the largest follicle (6.6+/-0.2 versus 5.9+/-0.2, P<0.05), and a lower number of small (6.7+/-0.3 versus 9.6+/-0.4, P<0.005) and total follicles (10.3+/-0.3 versus 12.9+/-0.4, P<0.005). However, mean plasma estradiol concentration during the follicular phase was higher in cloprostenol treated sheep (P<0.005). The mean ovulation rate was similar in both treatments (1.7+/-0.2 versus 1.7+/-0.3), but progesterone concentration during the early luteal phase was again higher in sheep treated with cloprostenol (P<0.05). The mean number of retrieved oocytes/embryos was very similar in both treatments (1.2+/-0.2 versus 1.4+/-0.2) and showed similar fertilization rates (70.6% versus 66.7%), but, although differences did not reach statistical significance, final viability rate was higher in cloprostenol than in progestagen treated ewes (58.9% versus 46.1%, P=0.07). Current results give new evidences supporting the negative effects of progestagens on the functionality of ovulatory follicles and support the development of new protocols for assisted reproduction including the use of prostaglandin analogues.

Abstract
The objectives of this study were to investigate in the goat uterus the expression of estrogen-alpha (ER alpha) and progesterone receptors (PR) and their relationship to proliferation indices (Ki-67) during peri-implantation on Days 22 to 30 post coitum (pc). Immunohistochemical methods were used to quantify ER alpha and PR for luminal and deep regions of the endometrium and of the myometrium. On Day 22 pc cell proliferation was only observed in the luminal epithelium. On Day 24 pc, high cell proliferation indices were seen in luminal epithelium and proliferation began in the luminal stroma and glands. There was a positive correlation between Ki-67 and total ER alpha score in the luminal epithelium (r = 0.53, P < 0.01). Levels of PR scores were highly correlated with Ki-67 indices in luminal epithelium (r = 0.74, P < 0.01) and stroma (r = 0.70, P < 0.01). No Ki-67 expression was observed in deep glands, stroma or myometrium on any of the days studied. Results indicate that patterns of ER alpha and PR expression differ markedly, and that there was a high correlation between PR expression and cell proliferation in the caprine uterus during the peri-implantation period.

Abstract
The possibility that patients who have suffered a traumatic brain injury will commit suicide is high, and in many cases clinicians tend to underestimate this possibility. In this study, 39 consecutive patients are studied through a Rorschach technique more than 1.5 years after their hospital discharge. The data show that 48.6% of the patients fulfil the criteria that classifies them as depressive, and, of these, 65% are at clinical risk to commit suicide (33.3% of the total of TBI patients); 25.6% have not met the criteria of depression or suicidal tendencies, and another 25.6% show very low suicide tendency scores. Only 15.6% of the total patients presented only depression without risk of suicide. The neurobehavioural and cognitive profile of the TBI suicide-prone patient shows an emotional person with cognitive difficulties in how they interpret reality, the person tries to understand what is happening around them, but is unable to cope. They show concrete thoughts, although they have difficulties solving problems and have few intellectual resources to cope with their surroundings. They do not know how to distance themselves from the emotional aspects of situations.

Abstract
This article explores 3 aspects of breast diagnosis that are currently under investigation and about which our thinking has recently undergone considerable reshaping. The trend toward more frequent evaluation of clinically subtle lesions has suggested that it might be necessary to understand thefine-needle aspiration (FNA) presentation of proliferative breast disease. Efforts to do so, as well as our suggestions for additional studies and their potential limitations open this discussion. Following this section, the increasingly useful method of intraoperative cytology for evaluation of resected breast masses is considered in detail. In the final section, optimization of nonoperative sampling by combination of mammography, ultrasonography, fine-needle aspiration, and core biopsy is discussed and illustrated.

Cloning and functional expression of a gene encoding a P1 type nucleoside transporter from Trypanosoma brucei. J Biol Chem 1999; 274:30244-9. Abstract
Nucleoside transporters are likely to play a central role in the biochemistry of the parasite Trypanosoma brucei, since these protozoa are unable to synthesize purines de novo and must salvage them from their hosts. Furthermore, nucleoside transporters have been implicated in the uptake of antiparasitic and experimental drugs in these and other parasites. We have cloned the gene for a T. brucei nucleoside transporter, TbNT2, and shown that this permease is related in sequence to mammalian equilibrative nucleoside transporters. Expression of the TbNT2 gene in Xenopus oocytes reveals that the permease transports adenosine, inosine, and guanosine and hence has the substrate specificity of the P1 type nucleoside transporters that have been previously characterized by uptake assays in intact parasites. TbNT2 mRNA is expressed in bloodstream form (mammalian host stage) parasites but not in procyclic form (insect stage) parasites, indicating that the gene is developmentally regulated during the parasite life cycle. Genomic Southern blots suggest that there are multiple genes related in sequence to TbNT2, implying the existence of a family of nucleoside transporter genes in these parasites.

Caprine testicular hypoplasia associated with sexual reversion decreases the expression of insulin-like growth factor II (IGF-II) mRNA in testes. Anim Reprod Sci 1998; 52:279-88. Abstract
The genetic expression of insulin-like growth factor II (IGF-II) mRNA was studied in healthy adult testes and in hypoplastic testes of polled Murciano-Granadina goats by means of in situ hybridization. A positive reaction in spermatogonia, pachytene spermatocytes and a few peritubular myoid cells was observed using the ovine antisense oligonucleotide in healthy testes. The hypoplastic testes displayed a loss of germinal epithelium and a slight thickening of the basement membranes. A limited number of immature germinal cells displayed a lesser hybridization reaction, while the expression of IGF-II mRNA observed in the peritubular myoid cells was similar to that seen in healthy testes. In hypoplastic testes, IGF-II mRNA expression within germinal cells decreased with increasing hypoplasia within the seminiferous epithelium and there was no hybridization within the tubules in cases of severely disrupted spermatogenesis. These results suggest that testicular hypoplasia is associated with changes in the expression of IGF-II mRNA.

Abstract
All parasitic protozoa studied to date are incapable of purine biosynthesis and must therefore salvage purine nucleobases or nucleosides from their hosts. This salvage process is initiated by purine transporters on the parasite cell surface. We have used a mutant line (TUBA5) of Leishmania donovani that is deficient in adenosine/pyrimidine nucleoside transport activity (LdNT1) to clone genes encoding these nucleoside transporters by functional rescue. Two such genes, LdNT1.1 and LdNT1.2, have been sequenced and shown to encode deduced polypeptides with significant sequence identity to the human facilitative nucleoside transporter hENT1. Hydrophobicity analysis of the LdNT1.1 and LdNT1.2 proteins predicted 11 transmembrane domains. Transfection of the adenosine/pyrimidine nucleoside transport-deficient TUBA5 parasites with vectors containing the LdNT1.1 and LdNT1.2 genes confers sensitivity to the cytotoxic adenosine analog tubercidin and concurrently restores the ability of this mutant line to take up [3H]adenosine and [3H]uridine. Moreover, expression of the LdNT1.2 ORF in Xenopus oocytes significantly increases their ability to take up [3H]adenosine, confirming that this single protein is sufficient to mediate nucleoside transport. These results establish genetically and biochemically that both LdNT1 genes encode functional adenosine/pyrimidine nucleoside transporters.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Bacillary angiomatosis and bacillary peliosis are vascular proliferative manifestations of infection with species of the genus bartonella that occur predominantly in patients infected with the human immunodeficiency virus. Two species, B. henselae and B. quintana, have been associated with bacillary angiomatosis, but culture and speciation are difficult, and there has been little systematic evaluation of the species-specific disease characteristics. We studied 49 patients seen over eight years who were infected with bartonella species identified by molecular techniques and who had clinical lesions consistent with bacillary angiomatosis-peliosis. METHODS In this case-control study, a standardized questionnaire about exposures was administered to patients with bacillary angiomatosis-peliosis and to 96 matched controls. The infecting bartonella species were determined by molecular techniques. RESULTS Of the 49 patients with bacillary angiomatosis-peliosis, 26 (53 percent) were infected with B. henselae and 23 (47 percent) with B. quintana. Subcutaneous and lytic bone lesions were strongly associated with B. quintana, whereas peliosis hepatis was associated exclusively with B. henselae. Patients with B. henselae infection were identified throughout the study period and were epidemiologically linked to cat and flea exposure (P< or =0.004), whereas those with B. quintana were clustered and were characterized by low income (P=0.003), homelessness (P = 0.004), and exposure to lice (P= 0.03). Prior treatment with macrolide antibiotics appeared to be protective against infection with either species. CONCLUSIONS B. henselae and B. quintana, the organisms that cause bacillary angiomatosis-peliosis, are associated with different epidemiologic risk factors and with predilections for involvement of different organs.

Abstract
The basic reproductive rate (R0) is a measure of the severity of an epidemic. On the basis of replicated Latin hypercube sampling, the authors performed an uncertainty and sensitivity analysis of the basic reproductive rate of tuberculosis (TB). The uncertainty analysis allowed for the derivation of a frequency distribution for R0 and the assessment of the relative contribution each of the three components of R0 made when TB epidemics first arose centuries ago. (The three components of R0 are associated with fast, slow, and relapse TB.) R0 estimates indicated the existence of fairly severe epidemics when TB epidemics first arose. The R0 for the susceptible persons who developed TB slowly (R0(slow)) contributed the most to the R0 estimates; however, the relative R0(slow) contribution decreased as the severity of TB epidemics increased. The sensitivity of the magnitude of R0 to the uncertainty in estimating values of each of the input parameters was assessed. These results indicated that five of the nine input parameters, because of their estimation uncertainty, were influential in determining the magnitude of R0. This uncertainty and sensitivity methodology provides results that can aid investigators in understanding the historical epidemiology of TB by quantifying the effect of the transmission processes involved. Additionally, this method can be applied to the R0 of any other infectious disease to estimate the probability of an epidemic outbreak.

Abstract
The halitoxin complex from the marine sponge Amphimedon viridis, collected in the São Sebastião channel (southeastern Brazilian coast), was isolated by gel-filtration chromatography on Sephadex LH-20. Spectroscopic data (1H, 13C and 2D-NMR) of halitoxin from A. viridis indicated that it has the same two alkylpyridine monomers composition of the previously isolated halitoxin from Amphimedon compressa (as Haliclona rubens). Nevertheless, analysis by High Performance Gel Permeation Chromatography indicated that the halitoxin complex of A. viridis has a lower molecular weight (500, 2000 and 5000 Da; the major component corresponding to the fraction of 2000 Da MW) when compared to the previously isolated halitoxin complex from A. compressa. Some pharmacological properties of the halitoxin complex from A. viridis were evaluated in terms of lethality, antimitosis, hemolysis and neurotoxicity. The possible chemotaxonomic value of alkyl pyridine alkaloids is discussed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Bacillary angiomatosis (BA) is a localized infectious process that affects primarily patients with the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. The microorganisms implicated in the pathogenesis of this disease belong to the Rickettsiaceae family. CASE A 43-year-old, human immunodeficiency syndrome-positive male presented with diffuse swelling in the right deltoid area. A neoplastic process was considered in the differential diagnosis. Fine needle aspiration biopsy showed proliferation of blood vessels lined with plump endothelial cells, and the interstitial space was occupied by neutrophilic infiltrate, leukocytoclastic debris and clumps of characteristic amphophilic, granular material. Warthin-Starry stain demonstrated clusters of bacilli diagnostic of bacillary angiomatosis. CONCLUSION The diagnosis of this entity, made by fine needle aspiration cytology (as the only diagnostic procedure), was instrumental in preventing further surgical manipulation and in initiating appropriate and immediate antibiotic therapy.

Abstract
In developed countries the major tuberculosis epidemics declined long before the disease became curable in the 1940s. We present a theoretical framework for assessing the intrinsic transmission dynamics of tuberculosis. We demonstrate that it takes one to several hundred years for a tuberculosis epidemic to rise, fall and reach a stable endemic level. Our results suggest that some of the decline of tuberculosis is simply due to the natural behaviour of an epidemic. Although other factors must also have contributed to the decline, these causal factors were constrained to operate within the slow response time dictated by the intrinsic dynamics.

Abstract
Leishmania parasites are exposed to pronounced changes in their environment during their life cycle as they migrate from the sandfly midgut to the insect proboscis and then into the phagolysosomes of the vertebrate macrophages. The developmental transformations that produce each life cycle stage of the parasite may be signaled in part by binding of environmental ligands to receptors which mediate transduction of extracellular signals. We have identified a family of five clustered genes in Leishmania donovani which may encode signal transduction receptors. The coding regions of two of these genes, designated rac-A and rac-B, have been sequenced and shown to code for proteins with an NH2-terminal hydrophilic domain, an intervening putative transmembrane segment, and a COOH-terminal domain that has high sequence identity to the catalytic domain from adenylate cyclases in other eukaryotes. We have expressed the receptor-adenylate cyclase protein (RAC)-A protein in Xenopus oocytes and demonstrated that it functions as an adenylate cyclase. Although RAC-B exhibits no catalytic activity when expressed in oocytes, co-expression of RAC-A and RAC-B negatively regulates the adenylate cyclase activity of RAC-A, suggesting that these two proteins interact in the membrane. Furthermore, a truncated version of RAC-A functions as a dominant negative mutant that inhibits the catalytic activity of the wild type receptor. The rac-A and rac-B genes encode developmentally regulated mRNAs which are expressed in the insect stage but not in the mammalian host stage of the parasite life cycle.

Characterization of 7q--by FISH technique of a case with acute myelogenous leukemia evolving from agnogenic myeloid metaplasia. Leuk Res 1995; 19:481-3. Abstract
We present a new case of acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) which evolved from agnogenic myeloid metaplasia (AMM). Routine cytogenetic techniques revealed a terminal deletion of one chromosome 7 (del (7) (q21)). When metaphases were hybridized with the 7q specific telomeric probe, a signal was detected at the distal q arm of the deleted chromosome 7 suggesting an interstitial deletion and the cytogenetic diagnosis was changed to 46,XY, del(7) (q21.1q36.2). Apparently, precise characterization of such deletions may have gone undetected, owing to the lack of technology, and deletions that have been previously regarded as terminal may very well be interstitial. Undoubtedly, precise identification of genetic abnormalities may lead to a better classification which may help to assign patients into sub-subgroups within the specific chromosomal abnormalities to initiate better therapeutic modalities and decisions.

Comparative analgesic efficacy of patient-controlled analgesia with ketorolac versus morphine after elective intraabdominal operations. Anesth Analg 1995; 80:1150-3. Abstract
We conducted a randomized, double-blind trial to compare analgesia and side effects produced by ketorolac and morphine during postoperative patient-controlled analgesia (PCA). Fifty-one patients (ASA classes I and II) undergoing elective intraabdominal procedures were assigned to one of two groups. When postoperative pain first increased to 4/10 (by visual analog scale [VAS]), patients were randomly assigned to one of two groups. Group 1 (n = 25) received up to two intravenous (IV) boluses of 5 mg of morphine followed by IV morphine PCA, whereas those in Group 2 (n = 26) received up to two IV boluses of 30 mg ketorolac, then IV ketorolac PCA. Up to two rescue doses of morphine (5 mg per dose, subcutaneously) were given in either group when pain during deep inhalation exceeded 5/10 on VAS. Ten patients from Group 1 required rescue doses of morphine compared to 22 patients from Group 2 (P < 0.0011). Two and 16 patients from Groups 1 and 2, respectively, were withdrawn because of inadequate analgesia (P < 0.01). Mean pain scores were less in Group 1 than in Group 2 at each time, but only significantly so at 15 min (P < 0.0021), 30 min (P < 0.0336), and 24 h (P < 0.0358) after starting PCA. Time to acceptance of oral liquids was equivalent in Groups 1 and 2 (22 h and 21 h, respectively). IV ketorolac PCA, although well tolerated, has limited effectiveness as the sole postoperative analgesic after intraabdominal operations.

Abstract
We performed an immunohistochemical study of the basement membrane (BM) proteins laminin and type IV collagen in 35 canine mammary tumours, histologically classified according to the World Health Organization's suggested classification. Laminin and type IV collagen were seen in extracellular locations but only laminin was present in epithelial and myoepithelial cells and chondrocytes. The BM was always continuous in adenomas and fibroadenomas. In the 20 malignant tumours studied, the basement membrane was continuous in one, discontinuous in five, and virtually absent in 14. When present, the BM of malignant tumours varied in width and distribution in the same area. The benign and malignant mixed tumours did not have BM separating epithelial and newly-formed mesenchymal structures. In areas of abundant myoepithelial cells in complex and mixed tumours, both benign and malignant, there were groups of BM fragments which differed in length and thickness and occasionally formed tangles. We have called these 'membranous thickets'. Our results indicate that myoepithelial cells are the main source of the BM proteins laminin and type IV collagen in canine mammary tumours.

Abstract
An histological study of the postpartum period in 29 mares was carried out. Uterine biopsies were taken daily during the first 10 days postpartum in a total of 87 samples. At day 0, equine endometrium was characterized in the surface by the presence of regularly ordered microcaruncles; the stratum spongiosum was oedematous and contained distended and scarce glands. Degenerative changes in microcaruncles and endometrial glands were present on day 1 postpartum. The epithelium of the microcaruncles from 2 to 5 days postpartum showed cytoplasmic vacuolization, karyorrhexis and an inflammatory reaction with neutrophils and phagocitic cells. On day 7 postpartum, the histology of the endometrium was similar to the normal proestrus with cuboidal luminal epithelium and an oedematous stromal tissue. The changes are usually completed within days 9 and 10 postpartum with the histologically typical appearance of estrus in mares.

Differential effects of unilateral lesions in the medial amygdala on spontaneous and induced ovulation. Brain Res Bull 1995; 38:313-7. Abstract
The possible existence of asymmetry in the control of ovulation by the medial amygdala was explored. Unilateral lesions of the medial amygdala were performed on each day of the estrous cycle. The estral index diminished in almost all animals with a lesion in the right side of medial amygdala. Lesions of the right medial amygdala, when performed on diestrus-1, resulted in a significant decrease in the number of rats ovulating compared to controls (4/8 vs. 8/8, p < 0.05). In ovulating animals a significant reduction in the number of ova shed by the left ovary was found (2.2 +/- 0.8 vs. 6.3 +/- 0.8, p < 0.05). Lesions of the stria terminalis performed on diestrus-1 did not affect ovulation. In a second experiment, administration of GnRH did not restore ovulation in rats with lesions of the right medial amygdala. However, sequential injections of PMSG-hCG did result in ovulation by all members of a group of lesioned animals. In this last condition a significant decrease in the number of ova shed by the right ovary was found compared to animals in the lesion-only condition (1.5 +/- 0.5 vs. 6.0 +/- 1.5, p < 0.05). These data suggest that control of ovulation by the medial amygdala is asymmetric and varies during the estrous cycle.

Abstract
Fibronectin and its integrin receptor alpha 5 beta 1 were studied by immunohistochemical methods in five normal canine mammary glands, four dysplastic glands and 18 mammary tumours. The aim of the study was to evaluate the possible changes in the alpha 5 beta 1 integrin receptor and its ligand fibronectin in relation to the metastatic capacity of canine mammary neoplasms. The immunostaining of alpha 5 beta 1 was very uniform in the hyperplastic glands but uneven in the mammary tumours. The expression of alpha 5 and beta 1 was diminished in metastatic tumours but there were some alpha 5-positive cells with pronounced features of malignancy and immaturity. Stromal fibronectin was increased in most cases and cytoplasmic staining of fibronectin was observed in epithelial and myoepithelial cells in mammary neoplasms but not in normal or dysplastic mammary tissue. There was no relationship between the content of alpha 5 beta 1 and the expression of fibronectin in canine mammary tumours.

Abstract
A case with typical features of chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) with two complex aberrations in addition to the standard t(9;22) is reported. Cytogenetic evaluation of the patient's bone marrow cells (BMC) showed 46,XX,t(6;19)(q16;p13.3),t(9;22)(q34;q11) in 60% of the mitotic cells and 46,XX,idem, t(6;15)(p25;q22) in the remaining 40% dividing cells. The patient's peripheral blood smear exhibited the usual differential observed in chronic-phase CML and was clinically indistinguishable from patients with the t(9;22) as the only translocation. We performed Southern blotting on BglII-digested DNA with the Trans-Probe (OSI) and in addition to the 4.8-, 2.3-, and 1.1-kilobase (kb) germline fragments, we detected an additional fragment at 7 kb. This probe spans the entire 5.8-kb M-breakpoint cluster region (BCR), and a single breakpoint in this region will appear as either one or two additional fragments. Because only one additional fragment was observed, both cell lines apparently share the same breakpoint in the ABL/BCR gene. Apparently the second aberrant cell line with the additional t(6;15) represents clonal evolution of the original abnormal clone.

Abstract
A highly variable DNA region (EhVR1), isolated from Entamoeba histolytica clone A, strain HM1:IMSS, is transcribed into several transcripts, which differ in genetically related clones. EhVR1 (3.5 kb) is composed of two contiguous fragments; one of these 1.9 kb long, at the 3' end, identified similar transcripts in clones A, L6 and C2 (all derived from strain HM1:IMMS), the other of 1.6 kb, at the 5' end, detected 0.5, 0.6 and 0.7 kb transcripts only in clone A. Variability of the 1.6 kb fragment was found even within the same clone maintained under different conditions. EhVR1 was localized to 1.3 and 1.4 Mb linear chromosomes and also found in circular molecules. The sequence of the 1.6 kb fragment revealed the presence of a large number of different repeats, including inverted and palindromic repeats. A p145 sequence, previously detected in episomal DNA of the amoeba, was found at the 5' end of EhVR1. The presence of EhVR1 in linear and circular molecules, its high number of repeats, and its variability in genetically related clones suggest the existence of DNA regions that undergo dynamic non-reciprocal recombination between circular episomes and linear chromosomes, and may thus contribute to variability in the trophozoite genome.

Abstract
Peritoneal mesotheliomas are uncommon among cows although there has been an increase in the frequency of diagnosis of this neoplasia in the past few years. The case of a 2 year old cow is described. On post-mortem examination, several nodules of variable size were found in the peritoneal cavity. These nodules fused together, but they did not go deep into the organs. Histologically, such nodules were formed by a population of fusiform cells of malignant morphological character and sarcomatous appearance. Immunocytochemical study, using P.A.P. techniques, showed a highly positive reaction towards vimentin and a negative reaction towards wide-spectrum cytokeratins, hence suggesting a mesenchymal origin of the neoplasia. According to the histopathological study, a multifocal peritoneal mesothelioma of sarcomatous appearance was identified.

Abstract
We assessed infectious complications of long-term percutaneous central venous catheterization in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). We evaluated 98 consecutive patients, accounting for 6,298 catheter days. Catheter-associated bacteremia occurred in 3% of patients, a rate of 0.128%/patient-catheter day. Only bacterial pathogens--Pseudomonas, Serratia, and Staphylococcus species--were isolated. Five patients had infection at the catheter exit site. The length of time catheters were indwelling was not significantly different in patients with and those without infections. Percutaneous, multiple-use central venous catheters are safe and well accepted by patients with AIDS.

Abstract
Conditioned flavor aversions (CFA) are acquired by anesthetized rats but effects of various anesthetics on acquisition of aversions for separate odor and taste components are unknown. In Experiment 1, rats drank tomato juice and then were tranquilized with "Innovar-Vet" or "Rompun" before receiving injections of lithium chloride. Neither drug interfered with acquisition of aversions. Innovar-Vet alone produced no aversions; Rompun alone produced mild aversions but did not enhance aversions when combined with lithium. In Experiments 2 and 3, rats received a compound odor/taste cue as they drank and then were anesthetized with pentobarbital before lithium injections. Anesthesia alone produced negligible aversions but facilitated taste-lithium aversions. During odor tests, odor aversions were weaker than taste aversions. These data extend previous work and suggest that CFA does not result from ordinary classical conditioning. A tripartite notation that unites CFA and classical conditioning is discussed.

Abstract
While Kaposi's sarcoma in patients with the acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) may present as a multicentric disease with progressive organ involvement, the classic form of Kaposi's sarcoma is an indolent tumor seldom affecting extracutaneous areas and almost never responsible for the patient's demise. An attempt was made to correlate these clinical differences with the nuclear DNA content of tumor cells in histologic sections from 15 patients (9 with AIDS and 6 without AIDS). All tumors showed a similar DNA distribution pattern, with most cells appearing diploid, indicative of a low malignant potential. These findings indicate that Kaposi's sarcoma of both AIDS and non-AIDS patients is a tumor of intrinsically low malignancy and that lack of immune surveillance is most probably responsible for its aggressive biologic behavior in many AIDS patients.

Abstract
Renin activity, renin substrate and aldosterone were measured in plasma of 17 children aged 12 to 28 months and suffering from severe malnutrition (marasmic kwashiorkor). Plasma renin activity was very high (median 29.0 ng/ml/hr) at admission, decreased after equilibration with a normal sodium diet (9.9 ng/ml/hr) and was negatively correlated with urinary sodium excretion. Plasma renin substrate and aldosterone concentrations were in the normal range; plasma aldosterone correlated positively with serum potassium. The hyperactivity of the renin-angiotensin system may be of relevance to the renal function in severe malnutrition.

Abstract
Review of the literature finds a strong point made for polyps of the stomach to be considered as "sentinels" of malignancy. The controversy over the transformation of gastric polyps into malignant tumors is coming to an end. Apparently, everyone agrees with a high incidence of malignant transformation in adenomatous polyps. The recent case report by Papp and Joseph of a hyperplastic polyp with malignant changes, seems to demonstrate that all polyps can undergo neoplastic transformation. We believe that every gastrectomized patient should be gastroscoped once a year, even with an absence of symptoms or lack of x-ray findings. Any polyp, adenomatous or hyperplastic, should be removed endoscopically and studied histopathologically for possible association with or development of carcinoma.
