Abstract
Osteoprotegerin (OPG) is a trap receptor for the receptor activator of the nuclear factor kappa B ligand (RANKL). We aimed to determine the OPG and free soluble RANKL (sRANKL) concentrations in girls during puberty and their relationships with pubertal stage, growth rate and serum concentrations of estradiol, as well as classical bone formation (N-terminal propeptide of type I collagen (PINP), bone-specific alkaline phosphatase (BALP), osteocalcin (OC)) and bone resorption (C-terminal telopeptide of type I collagen (CTX)) markers. The semi-longitudinal study involved 88 healthy girls, aged 11.8-13.2 years. Their weight and height were measured twice at one-year intervals. Pubertal stages were assessed using the Tanner (T) scale. Blood samples were taken at the first examination. Serum concentrations of OPG, sRANKL, CTX and BALP were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, estradiol and PINP by radioimmunoassay and osteocalcin by immunoradiometric assay. The one-year increase in height and weight of girls in the T2 and T3 pubertal stages was greater than that of girls in the T4 stage (p=0.000, p<0.03). OPG concentrations (T2: 4.04±0.62; T3: 4.31±0.79; T4: 4.46±0.84 pmol/L) sRANKL concentrations (T2: 0.22 (IQR 0.09-0.54); T3: 0.42 (IQR 0.22-0.79); T4: 0.35 (IQR 0.16-1.04) pmol/L) and sRANKL/OPG ratios (T2: 0.05 (IQR 0.03-0.13); T3: 0.11 (IQR 0.05-0.19); T4: 0.09 (IQR 0.05-0.19) did not differ significantly between pubertal stages. Concentrations of PINP, CTX, BALP and OC were higher in girls at T3 stage than at the T4 stage (p=0.000, p=0.001, p=0.046, p=0.038; respectively). Concentrations of sRANKL and OPG did not correlate with body weight, height, growth rate, or concentrations of estradiol, PINP, CTX, BALP and OC. There were correlations between the increase in height over one year and the concentrations of PINP (r=0.499, p=0.000), CTX (r=0.311, p=0.003) and BALP (r=0.224, p=0.036), as well as of estradiol (r=-0.473, p=0.000). Unlike PINP, OC, BALP, CTX or estradiol concentrations, sRANKL and OPG concentrations do not change in girls during puberty. Neither OPG nor sRANKL concentrations correlate with somatic characteristics and classical bone turnover markers concentrations.

Abstract
Polypropylene color masterbatches containing modified layered double hydroxides, LDHs, were created. The simple, industry-acceptable method of LDH surface modification with quinacridone and phthalocyanine pigments using the pulverization method in ball mills was applied. It was reported that the modification parameters such as time and rotational speed affected the tendency to create the aggregates for modified fillers. TGA analysis of the modified LDH showed that modification with phthalocyanine pigment shifted the temperature at which 5%, T5%, and 10% of mass loss, T10%, occurred compared with that for unmodified LDH. The viscoelastic properties of prepared masterbatches were investigated. The incorporation of the modified fillers instead of neat pigments led to an increase in the loss shear modulus, G″, indicating a stronger influence on the dissipation of energy by the melted masterbatch. The similar values of tan, δ, were determined for melted masterbatches containing phthalocyanine pigment and green modified LDH filler. The incorporation of both LDHs modified by phthalocyanine and quinacridone pigment fillers slightly increased the zero-shear viscosity, η0, compared with that of the masterbatches based on the neat pigments. The Cole-Cole plots and the analysis of the Maxwell and continuous relaxation models showed that modified colored LDH fillers facilitated the relaxation of the melted masterbatch, and shorter relaxation times were observed. The phthalocyanine-modified LDH filler improved the thermal stability of the masterbatches. Additionally, the impact of pigments and modified, colored LDH on the crystallization of polypropylene was investigated.

Abstract
The impact of a polyphenol-rich 0.1% aqueous extract from Aronia melanocarpa L. berries (AE) on the body status of manganese (Mn) and the activity of this essential element-dependent mitochondrial superoxide dismutase (MnSOD) during treatment with cadmium (Cd) was investigated in a rat model of low-level and moderate environmental human exposure to this xenobiotic (1 and 5 mg Cd/kg diet, respectively, for 3-24 months). The exposure to Cd, dose- and duration-dependently, affected the body status of Mn (apparent absorption, body retention, serum and tissue concentrations, content in some organs and total Mn body burden, and urinary and faecal excretion) and the activity of MnSOD in the mitochondria of the liver, kidney, and brain. The administration of AE during the exposure to Cd prevented or at least partially protected the animals from the perturbation of the metabolism of Mn, as well as ameliorated changes in the activity of MnSOD and the concentration of Mn and protected from Cd accumulation in the mitochondria. In conclusion, AE may protect from disorders in the body status of Mn and influence the antioxidative capacity of cells under chronic exposure to Cd. The findings confirm the protective impact of aronia berries products against Cd toxicity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A perineural (Tarlov) cyst is a fluid-filled lesion occurring between the perineurium and the endoneurium of spinal nerve roots. The aim of the study was to evaluate the prevalence and morphology of perineural cysts, detected incidentally in patients with symptomatic degenerative disk disease. MATERIALS/METHODS The study was based on the retrospective data gathered during magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examinations. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS Out of 3,128 spinal MRI examinations, perineural cysts were detected in 286 patients (9%). The cysts were most commonly observed in the sacral region, followed by thoracic, cervical, and lumbar regions. Cysts were more common in women than in men and the average age of patients was 54.8 years. In the majority, a single cyst was found. The average longest dimension of the lesion was 11.72 mm.

Abstract
We examined, in a rat model of moderate environmental human exposure to cadmium (Cd), whether the enhanced intake of zinc (Zn) may protect against Cd-caused destroying the oxidative/antioxidative balance and its consequences in the brain. The intoxication with Cd (5 mg/L, 6 months) weakened the enzymatic (superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, catalase) and non-enzymatic (total thiol groups, reduced glutathione) antioxidative barrier decreasing the total antioxidative status and increased the concentrations of pro-oxidants (hydrogen peroxide, myeloperoxidase) in this organ and its total oxidative status. These resulted in the development of oxidative stress and oxidative modifications of lipids and proteins. The co-administration of Zn (30 and 60 mg/L enhancing this element intake by 79% and 151%, respectively) importantly protected against Cd accumulation in the brain tissue and this xenobiotic-induced development of oxidative stress and oxidative damage to lipids and proteins. Moreover, this bioelement also prevented Cd-mediated oxidative stress evaluated in the serum. The favorable effect of Zn was caused by its independent action and interaction with Cd. Concluding, the enhancement of Zn intake under oral exposure to Cd may prevent the oxidative/antioxidative imbalance and oxidative stress in the brain and thus protect against injury of cellular macromolecules in the nervous system.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Glioblastoma (GBM) remains one of the biggest therapeutic challenges in neuro-oncology. In spite of multimodal treatment approaches the prognosis of GBM is extremely poor, median survival is estimated about 12–16 months. Although GBM is one of the most common and malignant primary brain tumors, pediatric glioblastoma, including congenital is a very rare tumor, with an incidence of about 1.1–3.4 per million live births. Moreover, the mode of presentation, behavior, response to therapy and molecular background of pediatric glioblastomas differs from adult type of GBM. Until now, about ten patients with congenital glioblastoma have been described and in none of them germline markers were examined. Here we report two patients with GBM, one with congenital tumor with germline mutations in MSH2 gene. METHODS Targeted Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) of the probands DNA extracted from leucocytes was performed using the TruSight One sequencing panel on an Illumina HiSeq 1500. Applied gene panel investigated the coding sequence and splice sites of 4813 genes associated with known disease phenotypes. The NGS data were analyzed using an in-house procedure. Identified variants were validated by Sanger sequencing. RESULTS NGS analysis of patients constitutional DNA revealed know, pathogenic variants c.940C>T and c.942 + 3A>T in MSH2 gene (NM_000251.3) associated with MMR-dependent hereditary cancer syndromes. CONCLUSION Molecular analysis are heavily needed for better understanding of pediatric GBM etiology and new treatment modality implementation. Identification of this oncogenic driver may provide insight into the pathogenesis of GBM, including congenital cases. Abstract
Plant-based diet and plant proteins specifically are predestined to meet nutritional requirements of growing population of humans and simultaneously reduce negative effects of food production on the environment. While searching for new sources of proteins, special emphasis should be placed on oilseeds of Brassica family comprising varieties of rapeseed and canola as they contain nutritionally valuable proteins, which have potential to be used in food, but are now rarely or not used as food components. The purpose of the present work is to provide a comprehensive review of main canola/rapeseed proteins: cruciferin and napin, with the focus on their nutritional and functional features, putting special emphasis on their possible applications in food. Technological challenges to obtain rapeseed protein products that are free from anti-nutritional factors are also addressed. As molecular structure of cruciferin and napin differs, they exhibit distinct features, such as solubility, emulsifying, foaming or gelling properties. Potential allergenic effect of 2S napin has to be taken under consideration. Overall, rapeseed proteins demonstrate beneficial nutritional value and functional properties and are deemed to play important roles both in food, as well as, non-food and non-feed applications.

Abstract
This study examined whether a polyphenol-rich extract from the berries of Aronia melanocarpa L. (AE; chokeberries) may protect from the impact of cadmium (Cd) on the metabolism of collagen in the liver. The study was conducted in an experimental model (rats that were fed a diet containing 1 or 5 mg Cd/kg for 3-24 months) of human exposure to this xenobiotic during a lifetime. The concentration of total collagen and the expression of collagen types I and III at the mRNA and protein levels, as well as the concentrations of matrix metalloproteinases (MMP-1 and MMP-2) and their tissue inhibitors (TIMP-1 and TIMP-2), were assayed. The administration of Cd and/or AE had only a slight and temporary impact on the concentration of total collagen in the liver. The supplementation with AE significantly prevented Cd-mediated changes in the expression of collagen types I and III at the mRNA and protein levels and their ratio (collagen III/collagen I), as well as a rise in the concentrations of MMPs and TIMPs in this organ. The results allow the conclusion that the intake of chokeberry products in the case of Cd intoxication may be effective in prevention from this xenobiotic-induced disturbance in collagen homeostasis in the liver.

Abstract
Perineural cyst (Tarlov cyst) is a lesion in a form of fluid-filled sacks, usually located within the nerve root sheath at the posterior root of a spinal nerve, whose wall is formed by: endoneurium, peripheral nerve fibers and ganglion cells and areolar tissue. Depending on the studied population, the frequency of lesion occurence was estimated at 1.5- 13.2%, with its significant majority occuring in women. Cyst development may be the result of ischemia, hemorrhage, inflammation or trauma. Cysts are usually asymptomatic theefore they are likely to bo detected accidentally. However, in approximately 1/4 of the cases, the cyst puts so much pressure on the nerve and the neighbouring nerve roots that it becomes symptomatic (causes pain). The presence of clinical symptoms may be an indication for conservative treatment (i.e. analgesics, rehablitation, cyst puncture) or surgery (usually laminectomy).

Abstract
Testicular tumours are rare neoplasms, which most commonly affects men aged 25 to 35 years. Among young adult males it is the most common cause of testicular swelling. In recent decades, the number of cases of testicular tumours has greatly increased. The most significant predisposing factors are cryptorchidism and some endocrine disorders, especially increased levels of gonadotropins and female sex hormones. Testicular trauma, inguinal hernia, extreme values of body mass index (BMI), high-calorie diet rich in dairy products as well as high social status are also regarded as risk factors. Furthermore, some chromosomal abnormalities like increased number of chromosomes 7, 8. 12, 21 and X, loss of chromosomes 4, 5, 11, 13, 18, or Y, mutation in the gene Xq27; as well as multiplied copy of the gene i(12p) are associated with tumor development. It has been proven that high testosterone levels and regular physical activity may prevent testicular tumours. Since one of the first sign the lesion is often a lump or swelling of the testis and the appearance of abnormal structure in the scrotum routine testicular self-examination seems to be important in early detection. In all suspected cases an immediate ultrasound examination of both testicles is highly recommended. It is also advised to conduct a computerized tomography (CT) and a positron emission tomography (PET) scan for staging of the tumor to select the best mode of treatment.

Abstract
In this study, two PCR-based methods (MSP-PCR and PCR-MP) were compared for their abilities to identify intraspecies variations of 23 isolates of Trichophyton rubrum, 78 isolates of Trichophyton interdigitale and 22 isolates of Microsporum canis, obtained mainly from patients in Lódź city. The results allowed to distinguish four types (containing two subtypes) characteristic for T. interdigitale and three types characteristic for T. rubrum using PCR-MP method. Analysis conducted using MSP-PCR with (GACA)4 primer revealed four types for T. rubrum and three types (containing one subtype) for T. interdigitale and with (GTG), primer showed two types (containing one subtype) for T. rubrum and six types (containing one subtype) for T. interdigitale. No differentiation was observed for the M. canis isolates with either method.

Abstract
Macrophages are among the infiltrate components of most malignant tumors. Tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) may secrete a variety of humoral factors, which promote or inhibit tumor growth. In general, depending on their activation pathway, macrophages exhibit two different patterns of phenotype, M1 or M2. It is assumed that TAMs comprise pattern M2. In the malignant pleural effusion, macrophages are a frequent component of cytological evaluation. In this microenvironment, TAMs could be involved in the development of immunity. The phenotype of macrophages represented in malignant and non-malignant pleural effusions is unknown. In this study, macrophages were isolated from 38 pleural effusions (15 malignant and 23 non-malignant) and the expression of a variety of immune mediators and their receptors was assessed to determine the type of activation (M1 vs. M2). The expression of mRNA was analyzed for IL-1β, IL-4, IL-6, IL-10, IL-11, IL-18, TNFα, TGFβ1, IL1R1, IL1RAP, TLR2, TLR4, VLA4, CD62L, MMP2, MMP9, VEGFA, PDGFA, and PDGFB. In immunohistochemical evaluation, the expressions of CD68, mesothelin, MAC387, IL-1β, IL-6, IL-10, IL-12, TNFα, and CD105 were assessed. The cytoplasmic expression of IFNγ, TNFα, IL-6, and IL-10 and the surface expression of CD11a, CD14, CD15, CD16, CD23, CD25, CD45, CD54, CD62L, CD69, VLA2, VLA3, VLA4, VLA6, TLR2, TLR4, and CCR7 were tested using flow cytometry. In supernatants from macrophages cultures, TNFα, IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, IL-12, MCP1, and VEGF were investigated by cytometric beads array method (CBA flex sets) and TGFβ1 by ELISA. Our results indicate that macrophages from malignant and non-malignant pleural effusions differ from each other and suggest that macrophages isolated from non-malignant effusions show a pattern comparable to M1 while those isolated from malignant effusions express similarity to M2 phenotype, but they have not shown a classical M2 pattern.

Abstract
The studies were focused on the influence of mutual changes in the ratio of calcium and magnesium in soil on the efficiency of cadmium and lead uptake and accumulation by Salix viminalis. In the environmental experiment the soil was modified according to the natural Ca/Mg ratio with the experimental groups 4:1 (physiological ratio), 20:1, and 1:10, and was characterized by the amounts of the most important elements (including heavy metals) and selected soil parameters. Efficiency of lead and cadmium accumulation was in the order of Ca/Mg ratios 1:10 > 4:1 > 20:1, and was higher in the shoots at 0.5 m height when compared to 0.1 m above the ground. Under Cd and Pb supplementation the level of both metals was 2-fold higher, while bioaccumulation factor values according to selected literature indicated weak accumulation. When the seasonal metal uptake was analysed (from April to October), the highest accumulation efficiency was observed in the first two periods (April to August) and was Ca/Mg ratio independent. Salix growth was restrained under 1:10 Ca/Mg ratio while it was stimulated under 20:1 ratio, which was opposite to the metal sorption. Summing up, increased calcium level in soil (20:1 Ca/Mg) resulted in limited sorption of heavy metals and stimulated biomass productivity. Under increased magnesium concentration (1:10 Ca/Mg) in relation to the natural 4:1 ratio the accumulation efficiency was the greatest but plant growth was inhibited.

Abstract
Molecular analysis of dermatophytes (based on PCR fingerprinting) revealed high clonal differentiation between the genus and species. Microsporum canis (zoophilic dermatophyte, belonging to genus Microsporum), responsible for most cases of tinea capitis in children, tinea corporis in adults and dermatophytoses in cats, is very unique in comparison with other dermatophytes. Results of most molecular studies show that there is no clonal differentiation within M. canis as distinct from other species. The aim of this study was application of (GACA)4 repetitive primer and (ACA)5 primer for typing of M. canis strains isolated from human and animals in Central Poland. Fungal strains: 32 clinical isolates of M. canis, originated from patients from Central Poland; 11 strains isolated from infected cats (6) and dogs (7), reference strains of M. canis (CBS 113480), T rubrum (CBS 120358), T mentagrophytes (CBS 120357) and E. floccosum (CBS 970.95). The genomic DNAs of the strains were used as a template in RAPD reaction. No differentiation was observed for the analyzed M. canis strains using (GACA)4 and (ACA)5 typing.

Abstract
The constant evolution of medical knowledge and accompanying development of diagnostic and treatment possibilities for arrhythmias and conduction disturbances has reawakened interest in the structure and function of the conduction system of the human heart, especially in the region of the atrioventricular (AV) junction and within the junction itself. Of the large number of studies dealing with the AV junction few focus on the initial zones of the AV node. These were described for the first time by Tawara in 1906. Similarly, Anderson et al. distinguished two origins of the AV node, the left one running towards the basis of the mitral valve and the right one leading towards the tricuspid valve. The differences in length and scale could be the result of the adoption of different reference points. The study was carried out on the material of 50 human hearts, of both sexes and ranging in age from 22 to 93, which were fixed in 10% formalin and 98% ethanol solution. The tissue obtained was fixed in the 10% formalin solution and, after being sunk in the paraffin, was cut into layers of about 10 mum thick. According to the age of the hearts, every 10(th) or 6(th) section was stained by the Masson-Goldner method. The preparations were examined under a LEICA 2000 and BIOLAR 2 microscope at magnifications of 2x to 400x. Each of the 50 examined hearts contained the atrioventricular node and its initial parts. We observed that the initial zone of the AV node is created by an assembly of cells typical for a conduction system that can create three groups that are initially independent of each other and are always arranged around the AV nodal artery. In all the hearts examined we found at least two initial parts of the node: the superior and inferior. These two groups were present in 45 hearts (90%). In the last 5 cases (10%) there was also a middle group. No cases were found either with a single initial group or without any initial groups. In the sections examined the superior group appeared to be first in 27 hearts (54%), while in 23 cases (46%) the inferior group was first. The length of each group was measured from its first appearance to its first direct contact with the second part. The length of the superior part varied from 0.15 to 2.91 mm (mean 0.90 +/- 0.6 mm), the inferior from 0.11 to 2.41 mm (mean 0.88 +/- 0.6 mm) and the middle from 0.67 to 2.21 mm (mean 1.04 +/- 0.7 mm). As mentioned above, in all 50 hearts there was a direct connection between the atrial muscle and the upper origin of AV node. Furthermore, in all sections (100%) the same part of the interatrial septal muscle was connected to the compact part of the node. Additionally, in 3 cases (6%) we were able to observe direct connections between the muscle fibres running from the fasciculus limbicus inferior to the initial zone of the AV node: in 2 cases (4%) with the superior group and in 1 case (2%) with the inferior group. In 8% of the material the atrial muscle of the supra-orificial zone made direct contact with the superior initial group and the compact zone of the node and in 10% there was contact between the suborificial muscle and the inferior group and the compact part of the node. This configuration was not observed in relation to the middle and inferior groups.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of the study was to evaluate the dependence of gingival recession, malocclusion and factors that may lead to recessions of the gingiva in patients applying for orthodontical treatment. MATERIAL AND METHODS The study involved 52 randomly selected patients treated with fixed appliances due to occlusal irregularities and dental abnormalities. Data obtained from the examination and selected parameters from cephalometric analysis were placed in a chart including ANB skeletal class and Wits parameter, lower incisor position IMPA, dental abnormalities, extractions due to orthodontical indications and recession etiopathic factors. Statistical analysis of obtained data was conducted using variance analysis. Statistically significant were assumed those calculations for which value of significance level p < or = 0.05. RESULTS Recession was observed in 18 patients of the 52 examined. Skeletal I class was found in 11 patients (61.12%) and in 8 cases Wits parameter corresponded with skeletal class III (44.4%). Among the patients examined normal incisor inclination was observed in 6 patients (33.33%), whereas 12 cases revealed inclination irregularities (66.66%). Clinical examination disclosed dental defects in 13 patients (72.22%) and in 12 cases recession etiopathic factors were recognized (66.66%). Statistically significant differences between periodontal biotype and gingival recession of 43, 31, 33 teeth were estimated. CONCLUSIONS Anatomical factors, malocclusion and dental irregularities were fund to be the main cause of the single and/or multiple recessions. Patients applying for orthodontic treatment due to occlusal abnormalities should remain under particular control in case of symptoms suggesting the incidence of recession, particularly when recessions are already present.

Abstract
The purpose of the study was the evaluation of the dental plaque and the influence of determined hygienic factors on gingival recession occurrence in 455 students of The Medical University of Bialystok. All the subjects were examined in artificial light, with the use of the probe, mirror, and parodontometer. The distribution of stained dental deposits were estimated with the use of the plaque index according to Quigley and Hein. Moreover, the students were to fill a survey of their own project concerning hygienic habits. The results underwent statistical analysis. The dental plaque was not present in 71 people. Gingival recession was revealed in 134 out of 455 subjects. The majority of medical students brushed their teeth twice a day, using medium hard toothbrush or electric toothbrush with appropriate movements and medium strength while brushing. The frequency of brushing the teeth, hardness of the toothbrush, the use of electric toothbrush, the movements during brushing the teeth, the strength of brushing, the frequency of toothbrush change, the age, and sex have significant influence on the number of recession. The increase in the gingival recession in students is connected with: large pressure on the brush while toothbrushing, too frequent brushing and toothbrush change, the use of hard toothbrush and additional hygienic items, movements while brushing, the age (the number of recession elevates with the age), and sex (women showed more recession than men).

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of the study was the evaluation of parodontium according to Community Peridental Index of Treatment Needs (CPITN) index in 455 students of The Medical and Dentistry Department of The Medical University of Białystok. MATERIAL AND METHODS After the examination, the students filled a survey according to their own project concerning hygienic habits as well as smoking, sweet intake. The results underwent statistical analysis. RESULTS There were 1334 (48.86%) sextants observed with healthy parodontium in the studied population. Gingivorrhoea was stated in 440 sextants (16.12%), more often in men than in women. Calculus was reveled in 790 sextants (28.94%) of the population. The number of sextants with code 3 was 1.76%. Sextants with shallow pockets were more numerous in women (37 sextants) than in men (11 sextants). Advanced changes in parodontium (code 4) were observed in 9 sextants (0.33%). On the basis of the analysis of treatment needs in the group of 455 students, it can be stated that only 24.62% of the examined subjects did not need parodontium treatment. CONCLUSIONS The diagnosis of parodontopathy and the factor that can have harmful influence on the parodontium tissues in young people is a superior criterion in the fight with irreversible parodontium changes in adults.

Abstract
The typical atrial flutter is the most common supraventricular tachycardia with reentrant circuit. This tachyarrythmia is based on macroreentry wave going around established anatomic landmarks. The reentry in the inferior right atrial wall passes through narrow isthmus, which is the goal for ablative therapy. The isthmus area is bordered anteriorly by the tricuspid valve and posteriorly by the inferior vena cava, coronary sinus, and eustachian ridge. Near to this area we can find anatomical structure, which can be very important during arising, perpetuation and curing of atrial flutter. The concavity, so-called subthebesian fossa, is on the way of typical atrial flutters' reentrant circuit. Regarding the facts mentioned above we decided to examine the morphology and the arrangement of the muscle fibres in this fossa. Research was conducted on material consisting of 70 human hearts of both sexes from the age of 34 to 72 years. 50 hearts came from patients whose death was not cardiologic in origin. 20 hearts came from humans in whose common atrial flutter was confirmed. We observed the arrangement of muscle fibres in the area of subthebesian fossa. Besides we measured the size and deepness of the subthebesian fossa in both groups of hearts. We found that regular arrangement of muscle fibres within subthebesian fossa was present in 23 healthy human hearts (46%) and 7 cases (35%) of hearts with atrial flutter. The irregular arrangement of muscle fibres was observed in 27 hearts (54%) of control group and 13 hearts (65%) with dysrrhythmia. The thickness of the right atrial wall within the subthebesian fossa was very thin in 8 normal hearts (16%) and in 5 dysrrhythmic hearts (25%). The sizes of examined structure were variable in both groups of hearts, and are presented in the table. It seems that the subthebesian concavity can be the substrate for reentrant circuit during atrial flutter, and there could be such special arrangement of muscle fibres, which allows for microreentrant circuit to arise in this area.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The increase of body size and weight depends on metabolism in the bone tissue and accumulation of fat, but the role of many hormones and enzymatic systems that may influence these processes significantly has not been recognized. AIM An attempt to assess the correlation between the leptin hormone taking part in the regulation of fat tissue reserves, markers of bone formation and selected anthropometric traits in newborns was made. SUBJECTS AND METHODS Levels of leptin, osteocalcin and C-terminal propeptide type I procollagen (PICP) in the serum of 64 Appropriate for Gestational Age newborns (AGA newborns) with gestational age between 27 and 42 weeks were assessed. In parallel, 15 anthropometric traits were measured and the Quetelet Index was calculated for all the newborns. Statistical analysis was performed using the Student's t-test, Mann-Whitney U test, Pearson's correlation and Spearman's correlation rank test. p < 0.05 was regarded as significant. RESULTS Statistically significant correlations between leptin, osteocalcin, PICP and selected anthropometric traits in newborns were found. There were no statistically significant correlations between serum levels of leptin and markers of bone formation in the investigated group of children. CONCLUSION In our study, we documented the association of leptin, osteocalcin and PICP with overall physical growth of AGA newborns. We did not confirm the relationship between leptin and bone formation in this stage of ontogenesis.

Abstract
The majority of anatomical structures within the heart during typical atrial flutters' ablation, right sided accessory pathway ablation or slow pathway ablation are invisible or blurred. Therefore it is very important to know in details interior right atrial structures during such procedures. In the neighborhood of coronary sinus orifice small concavity is visible. This area, called subthebesian fossa, is placed between the os of coronary sinus, the orifice of vena cava inferior and tricuspid annulus. The fossa is on the way of typical atrial flutters' reentrant circuit and is placed next to the isthmus area, which has become a target site for ablative therapy. Regarding the facts mentioned above we decided to examine the topography of this concavity in relation to neighboring structures. Research was conducted on material consisting of 45 human hearts of both sexes, from 19 to 71 years of age. The hearts came from patients whose death was not cardiologic in origin. The topography of the fossa was examined in relation to coronary sinus orifice (diameter A), vena cava inferior orifice (diameter B) and the attachment of the posterior leaflet of the tricuspid valve (diameter C). Besides we measured two perpendicular sizes in the inlet plane of the fossa. There were the longest size (diameter D) and the shortest size of the fossa (diameter E). We also defined deepness of the fossa (diameter F). Diameter A was from to 2 to 7mm (avg. 4.9 +/- 1.4 mm), diameter +/- from 2 to 8mm (avg. 4.0 +/- 1.6 mm) and diameter C from 5 to 9 mm (avg. 7.0 +/- 1.5 mm). The longest size in inlet plane of the concavity (diameter D) was from 12 to 18 mm (avg. 14.1 +/- 1.7 mm) and shortest size (diameter E) was from 7 to 14 mm (avg. 9.0 +/- 1.7 mm). The deepness of the fossa (diameter F) was from 2 to 7 mm (avg. 4.8 +/- 1.2 mm). The subthebesian concavity is inconstant anatomical structure, occurring in all forty five examined hearts (100%). The shape and sizes of the subthebesian fossa were variable in examined group of hearts. Our data suggest that differences in diameters between subthebesian fossa and neighboring structures may have clinical importance during ablation procedure.

Abstract
The atria are highly complex multidimensional structures composed of a heterogeneous branching network of subendocardial muscular bundles. The relief of the inner part of the right atrium includes the crista terminalis as well as multiple pectinate muscles that bridge the thinner atrial free walls and appendages. However, a handful of studies have focused attention on the role of the naturally occurring complexities of the atrial subendocardial muscle structures in the mechanisms of cardiac arrhythmias. In accordance with the facts mentioned above, it was decided to examine the morphology and topography of the external interatrial junctions and related structures in order to define the possible anatomical basis of impulse propagation in focal atrial fibrillation. Research was conducted on material consisting of 15 human hearts of both sexes (female--6, male--9) from 18 to 82 years of age. In addition we were concerned, on the basis of the history and electrocardiograph tracings, that none of the patients had shown focal and non-focal type of atrial fibrillation. The classic macroscopic methods of anatomical evaluation were used. The walls of the atria were prepared via a stereoscopic microscope, the pericardium and fatty tissue were eliminated from the surface of the atria, visualising muscle fibres linking both of the atria, and the beginnings and the endpoints of fascicles in the right and left atrium were estimated. The structure, large muscle bundle, was present in all examined hearts. The muscle fascicle was descending from the anterior wall of the right atrium just below the orifice of the superior vena cava. The fascicle, running towards the left atrium, divided into two branches, one of which joined with the superior fascicle from the posterior wall and created one running above the interatrial septum and infiltrating into the wall of the left atrium on its superior surface between the superior pulmonary veins. The other branch of the anterior fascicle was running across the anterior wall of the atria and it penetrated into the left atrium muscle in the region of the inferior pole of the left auricle outlet. On the posterior wall of the atria three types of interatrial fascicles were distinguished: unifascicular, bifascicular and trifascicular. The bifascicular type was the most frequent configuration (9 cases--60.0%), in 5 cases it was trifascicular (33.3%) and finally the unifascicular configuration was observed in just 1 heart (6.7%). On the basis of our study we can conclude that the external interatrial fascicles are the constant structure of the heart, although they may have a variable morphology. Those structures could be responsible for physiological conduction between the atria and may play an important role in patients with atrial fibrillation.

Abstract
The authors, using column, thin-layer, and ion-exchange chromatography, investigated carotenoid and carotenoprotein complex content in Cyclops kolensis specimens from an extremely eutrophic pond. The following carotenoids were found to be present: beta-carotene, beta-cryptoxanthin, lutein epoxide, crustaxanthin, 4'-hydroxyechinenone, canthaxanthin, and astaxanthin. Carotenoprotein complex containing astaxanthin as the prosthetic group name gamma-crustacyanine was purified from Cyclops kolensis individuals examined. The authors justify the adaptative role of these pigments in Cyclops kolensis specimens in extremely eutrophical conditions.

Abstract
The structure of the heart has been the subject of many observations since the beginnings of medical research. The first information regarding the existence of the conduction system of the heart was described by Purkinje and regarding the a-v node by Tawara. From the history regarding this structure it seems that this special system, so relevant to today's invasive cardiologist, is not understood in full. With regards to the interventional electrophysiology on the basis of histological study we decided to evaluate in detail the morphology and the topography of the various portions of the a-v junction. In order to confirm this hypothesis we made observations on the autopsy material of 100 normal human hearts, both sexes from 16 weeks of foetal life to 105 years of age, in which no pathological changes or inborn faults were found. Sections were done containing the heart's septum, stained using Masson's method with Goldner's modification. This research proves that the atrioventricular junction is a stable structure occurring in all hearts, undergoing involutionary changes with age, in which two main parts can be differentiated: the node and the bundle. The morphology of the node is very complex, because it is composed of three zones: the prenodal, the perinodal and the main, differing in cell structure and position. The topography of the node is generally stable, as it lies in the interatrial septum and always above the septal leaflet of the tricuspid valve. The structure of the bundle, in contrast to the node, is more stable and consists of the following parts: the penetrating, the non-branching and the branching. Its topography is also stable, as it lies in the membranous septum, mainly below the septal cusp of the tricuspid valve.

Abstract
Limb girdle muscular dystrophy (LGMD) is a heterogeneous group of dystrophies in which weakness and wasting initially appear at proximal groups of pelvic and shoulder girdles. Families in which LGMD is inherited as an autosomal recessive and rarely autosomal dominant trait were separated. Among autosomal recessive families, cases with rapid progression, called severe childhood autosomal recessive muscular dystrophy (SCARMD) were isolated. In some of these families linkage to chromosome 13 has been demonstrated. In other families especially those with relatively slower progression the genes were localised on chromosomes 2, 15. In families with adhalin mutations variability of clinical presentation is observed. In one of the described families with autosomal dominant inheritance the linkage to chromosome 5 has been established. Clinical and genetic studies of a large cohort of patients with limb-girdle muscular dystrophies enables the creation of new LGMD diagnostic criteria which facilitates proper genetic counselling.

Abstract
The investigations were carried out in 20 patients with severe forms of psoriasis, and in 18 healthy subjects. The generation of free superoxide radicals by polymorphonuclear leukocytes of peripheral blood was evaluated by Bellavite et al. (1983) method by use superoxide dismutase of Sigma firm. The obtained results may confirm alterations in PMNL functions in patients with psoriasis observed by many authors. It may confirm the probability of damage of membrane structures and alterations in their bactericidal functions.

Abstract
In 47 patients with generalized psoriasis vulgaris and 23 healthy subjects the effectiveness of the hepatic metabolism reflected by drug biotransformation was assessed with the antipyrine elimination test. In the group of psoriatic patients there were 25 men and 22 women and in the control group--age-matched 12 men and 11 women. The half-time of antipyrine was longer and the clearance index was lower in the patients than those in the control group. The differences were statistically significant. After 2 weeks of PUVA or SUP-therapy the differences were more significant. The findings indicate an impairment of the liver metabolic effectiveness reflected by drug biotransformation in psoriatic patients.

Abstract
The determinations of the activity of lysozyme in the serum, lysosomes and lysosomal supernatant of neutrophil granulocytes were done in 33 patients with generalized psoriasis and in 19 healthy controls. A decrease of lysozyme activity was demonstrated in the serum, lysosomes and lysosomal supernatant in the patients. During treatment by the PUVA method this activity rose gradually above the values in the control group. Systematic determination of lysozyme activity may help in monitoring of treatment progress.

Abstract
In order to determine the participation of different types of filaments in particular phases of myogenic cell differentiation, analysis of filament population was done in embryonic somite cells of the trout (S. trutta) and in the cells of developing limb of the salamander larvae (S. salamandra L.). The following types of myogenic units were selected for the observation: undifferentiated mesenchymal cells (presumptive myoblasts), myoblasts prior to and post fusion and myotubules. Basing on morphological features four types of filaments were encountered: skein (4 nm), actin (8 nm), intermediate (12...14 nm) and myosin (14, 17, 21, 25 nm) filaments. Within the myosin filament population three different classes of filaments differing significantly from one another in their thickness (p less than 0.01) were found. In fish myogenic cells we have found myosin filaments of a thickness 17, 21, 25 nm, whereas in amphibian's cells, myosin filaments measured in thickness 14, 17, 21 nm respectively. The observed quantitative differences in the composition of myosin filament population might reflect their maturation process during sarcomere formation. As the process of differentiation of contractile units - sarcomeres and microfibrils develops, a distinctive quantitative predominance of 17 nm myosin filaments in fishes and 14 nm myosin filaments in amphibians becomes established.

Abstract
After 30 days of clofibrate administration to 11 patients with type IV hyperlipoproteinemia, a significant fall was observed in serum triglyceride and cholesterol levels. In the VLDL fraction the concentrations of triglycerides, cholesterol and apo B were significantly decreased. The apo CII/apo CIII ratio was raised. Cholesterol concentration changes in LDL and HDL fractions were not significant.
