How do King Cobras move across a major highway? Unintentional wildlife crossing structures may facilitate movement

Global road networks continue to expand, and the wildlife responses to these landscape‐level changes need to be understood to advise long‐term management decisions. Roads have high mortality risk to snakes because snakes typically move slowly and can be intentionally targeted by drivers.

We investigated how radio‐tracked King Cobras (Ophiophagus hannah) traverse a major highway in northeast Thailand, and if reproductive cycles were associated with road hazards.

We surveyed a 15.3 km stretch of Highway 304 to determine if there were any locations where snakes could safely move across the road (e.g., culverts and bridges). We used recurse analyses to detect possible road‐crossing events, and used dynamic Brownian Bridge Movement Models (dBBMMs) to show movement pathways association with possible unintentional crossing structures. We further used Integrated Step Selection Functions (ISSF) to assess seasonal differences in avoidance of major roads for adult King Cobras in relation to reproductive state.

We discovered 32 unintentional wildlife crossing locations capable of facilitating King Cobra movement across the highway. While our dBBMMs broadly revealed underpasses as possible crossing points, they failed to identify specific underpasses used by telemetered individuals; however, the tracking locations pre‐ and post‐crossing and photographs provided strong evidence of underpass use. Our ISSF suggested a lower avoidance of roads during the breeding season, although the results were inconclusive. With the high volume of traffic, large size of King Cobras, and a 98.8% success rate of crossing the road in our study (nine individuals: 84 crossing attempts with one fatality), we strongly suspect that individuals are using the unintentional crossing structures to safely traverse the road.

Further research is needed to determine the extent of wildlife underpass use at our study site. We propose that more consistent integration of drainage culverts and bridges could help mitigate the impacts of roads on some terrestrial wildlife.

No room to roam: King Cobras reduce movement in agriculture

BACKGROUND

Studying animal movement provides insights into how animals react to land-use changes. As agriculture expands, we can use animal movement to examine how animals change their behaviour in response. Recent reviews show a tendency for mammalian species to reduce movements in response to increased human landscape modification, but reptile movements have not been as extensively studied.

METHODS

We examined movements of a large reptilian predator, the King Cobra (Ophiophagus hannah), in Northeast Thailand. We used a consistent regime of radio telemetry tracking to document movements across protected forest and adjacent agricultural areas. Using dynamic Brownian Bridge Movement Model derived motion variance, Integrated Step-Selection Functions, and metrics of site reuse, we examined how King Cobra movements changed in agricultural areas.

RESULTS

Motion variance values indicated that King Cobra movements increased in forested areas and tended to decrease in agricultural areas. Our Integrated Step-Selection Functions revealed that when moving in agricultural areas King Cobras restricted their movements to remain within vegetated semi-natural areas, often located along the banks of irrigation canals. Site reuse metrics of residency time and number of revisits appeared unaffected by distance to landscape features (forests, semi-natural areas, settlements, water bodies, and roads). Neither motion variance nor reuse metrics were consistently affected by the presence of threatening landscape features (e.g. roads, human settlements), suggesting that King Cobras will remain in close proximity to threats, provided habitat patches are available.

CONCLUSIONS

Although King Cobras displayed individual heterogeneity in their response to agricultural landscapes, the overall trend suggested reduced movements when faced with fragmented habitat patches embedded in an otherwise inhospitable land-use matrix. Movement reductions are consistent with findings for mammals and forest specialist species.

Benefit of Sequential Audit Cycles in Improving Management of Vitamin D Deficiency in the HIV Infected Paediatric Population

Aims Lifelong HIV infection has an unknown impact on bone health in children. In view of this, we aimed to improve management of vitamin D deficiency. Methods Three audits over 8 years (2009-2017) were performed with interventions introduced intermittently in an effort to improve vitamin D deficiency. The interventions included education, a change in vitamin D dose and brand to increase compliance and a shift to nursing led management. Results The most striking result was the eradication of patients with deficient vitamin D levels (<25nmol/L) in 2017. In 2009 and 2015, 15% and 9% were deficient. In the earlier two studies, only 15% had ‘sufficient’ (>50nmol) vitamin D levels. This increased to 71% in 2017. 10% of patients had levels greater than >120nmol/L, increasing risk of vitamin D toxicity. 67% of patients with insufficient vit D (25-50nmol/L) were prescribed a stat high dose vitamin D (120,000 IU) to help avoid adherence issues. Conclusions Sequential audits along with a shift to nurse led management were the most likely reasons for sustained improvement. Similar projects in all medical departments could improve clinical outcomes.

Space fit for a king: spatial ecology of king cobras (Ophiophagus hannah) in Sakaerat Biosphere Reserve, Northeastern Thailand

A species’ spatial ecology has direct implications for that species’ conservation. Far-ranging species may be more difficult to conserve because their movements increase their chances of encountering humans. The movements can take them out of protected areas, which is especially risky for species that are routinely persecuted. The king cobra (Ophiophagus hannah), a large venomous elapid, is subject to anthropogenic pressures, such as persecution and habitat loss. Here we present results from a study using radio telemetry to quantify movements and habitat use of nine king cobras in and around a protected area in Northeast Thailand. This study is the first investigation into the movements and habitat use of king cobras outside of the Western Ghats, India. On average, the tracked king cobra’s use areas of 493.42 ± 335.60 ha (95% fixed kernel), moving 183.24 ± 82.63 m per day. King cobras did not remain in intact forested area. Five of the individuals frequently used the human-dominated agricultural areas surrounding the protected area, appearing to make regular use of irrigation canals. Two adult males showed increases in movements during the breeding season. One male’s increased breeding season range caused him to venture beyond the protected area, shifting his habitat use from intact forests to scrub in human-dominated areas. King cobras’ large home range and willingness to use anthropogenic landscapes merits special consideration from conservation planners.

Using dynamic Brownian Bridge Movement Models to identify home range size and movement patterns in king cobras

Home range estimators are a critical component for understanding animal spatial ecology. The choice of home range estimator in spatial ecology studies can significantly influence management and conservation actions, as different methods lead to vastly different interpretations of movement patterns, habitat selection, as well as home range requirements. Reptile studies in particular have struggled to reach a consensus on the appropriate home range estimators to use, and species with cryptic behavior make home range assessment difficult. We applied dynamic Brownian Bridge Movement Models (dBBMMs) to radio-telemetry data from Ophiophagus hannah, a wide-ranging snake species. We used two focal individuals at different life stages (one juvenile male and one adult male) and sought to identify whether the method would accurately represent both their home range and movement patterns. To assess the suitability of dBBMMs, we compared this novel method with traditional home range estimation methods: minimum convex polygons (MCP) and Kernel density estimators (KDE). Both KDE and MCP incorporated higher levels of Type I and Type II errors, which would lead to biases in our understanding of this species space-use and habitat selection. Although these methods identified some general spatial-temporal patterns, dBBMMs were more efficient at detecting movement corridors and accurately representing long-term shelters sites, showing an improvement over methods traditionally favored in reptile studies. The additional flexibility of the dBBMM approach in providing insight into movement patterns can help further improve conservation and management actions. Additionally, our results suggest that dBBMMs may be more widely applicable in studies that rely on VHF telemetry and not limited to studies employing GPS tags.

Public perceptions of snakes and snakebite management: implications for conservation and human health in southern Nepal

BACKGROUND

Venomous snakebite and its effects are a source of fear for people living in southern Nepal. As a result, people have developed a negative attitude towards snakes, which can lead to human-snake conflicts that result in killing of snakes. Attempting to kill snakes increases the risk of snakebite, and actual killing of snakes contributes to loss of biodiversity. Currently, snake populations in southern Nepal are thought to be declining, but more research is needed to evaluate the conservation status of snakes. Therefore, we assessed attitudes, knowledge, and awareness of snakes and snakebite by Chitwan National Park's (CNP) buffer zone (BZ) inhabitants in an effort to better understand challenges to snake conservation and snakebite management. The results of this study have the potential to promote biodiversity conservation and increase human health in southern Nepal and beyond.

METHODS

We carried out face-to-face interviews of 150 randomly selected CNP BZ inhabitants, adopting a cross-sectional mixed research design and structured and semi-structured questionnaires from January-February 2013.

RESULTS

Results indicated that 43 % of respondents disliked snakes, 49 % would exterminate all venomous snakes, and 86 % feared snakes. Farmers were the most negative and teachers were the most ambivalent towards snakes. Respondents were generally unable to identify different snake species, and were almost completely unaware of the need of conserve snakes and how to prevent snakebites. Belief in a snake god, and the ability of snakes to absorb poisonous gases from the atmosphere were among many superstitions that appeared to predispose negativity towards snakes of BZ residents.

CONCLUSION

People with predisposed negativity towards snakes were not proponents of snake conservation. Fear, negativity, ambivalence towards, and ignorance about, snakes and the need for snake conservation were strong indicators of the propensity to harm or kill snakes. It seems that if wanton killing of snakes continues, local snake populations will decline, and rare and endangered snake species may even become locally extirpated. Moreover, inappropriate perception and knowledge about snakes and snakebites may put BZ people at increased risk of venomous snakebite. Therefore, intensive, pragmatic educational efforts focused on natural history and ecology of snakes and prevention of snakebite should be undertaken in communities and at schools and universities.

Organochlorine pesticides in squamate reptiles from southern Arizona, USA

Despite recognition of the lack of reptile ecotoxicology data, the taxon remains poorly studied. Contaminant body burdens are useful in demonstrating exposures to contaminants do occur and may provide insight regarding risks. The purpose of this study was to determine organochlorine pesticide burdens in various tissues of terrestrial reptiles opportunistically collected in Arizona. Heptachlor, DDE, and endrin were the most common analytes detected in fat samples. Liver samples contained methoxychlor and heptachlor at greater frequency than other organochlorines. Investigations into chronic low-level exposures are rare for reptiles and research is needed to determine critical body residues associated with adverse impacts.

Eleven new microsatellite loci for the tiger rattlesnake (Crotalus tigris)

Eleven microsatellite loci were isolated from an enriched genomic library from the tiger rattlesnake Crotalus tigris. Average observed heterozygosities in two populations were 0.456 and 0.427, respectively, and mean number of alleles were 7.54 (range 2-14) and 4.72 (range 2-13) respectively. No evidence of linkage disequilibrium was found across pairs of loci. The markers will be used in a long-term study examining the potential effects of urbanization on population dynamics and connectivity of this species in the mountain ranges surrounding Tucson, Arizona.

Adherence issues in children and adolescents receiving highly active antiretroviral therapy

The introduction of highly active antiretroviral therapies (HAART) for the treatment of paediatric HIV infection poses additional adherence challenges for children and families living with HIV A preliminary survey of 18 parents of children receiving HAART in Australia showed that although parents report high level of child adherence to HAART, specific features of the medication regimen, such as taste and number of medications made administration of HAART extremely difficult.Moreover, interaction between the treatment regimen and the day-to-day lives of families increases the adherence challenge. While some agreement exists in relation to the concerns families have about negative aspects of HAART; the diversity of issues suggests the need for ongoing and individualized support and information to families.

DNA surveillance: web-based molecular identification of whales, dolphins, and porpoises

DNA Surveillance is a Web-based application that assists in the identification of the species and population of unknown specimens by aligning user-submitted DNA sequences with a validated and curated data set of reference sequences. Phylogenetic analyses are performed and results are returned in tree and table format summarizing the evolutionary distances between the query and reference sequences. DNA Surveillance is implemented with mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) control region sequences representing the majority of recognized cetacean species. Extensions of the system to include other gene loci and taxa are planned. The service, including instructions and sample data, is available at http://www.dna-surveillance.auckland.ac.nz.

Preferential pulmonary retention of (S)-albuterol after inhalation of racemic albuterol

The (R)-enantiomer of racemic albuterol produces bronchodilation, whereas the (S)-enantiomer may increase airway reactivity. After oral or intravenous administration of racemic albuterol, the (R)- enantiomer is metabolized several times faster than the (S)-enantiomer; however, enantiomer disposition after inhaling racemic albuterol with a metered-dose inhaler (MDI) is not known. Accordingly, 10 healthy subjects inhaled racemic albuterol with a MDI alone and with a MDI and holding chamber. We measured plasma levels of unchanged (R)- and (S)-albuterol before and up to 4 h after inhalation of racemic albuterol, and determined the unchanged R/S ratio in urine before and at 0.5, 4, 8, and 24 h later. The disposition of albuterol's enantiomers with a MDI and holding chamber was similar to that with a MDI alone. The area under the curve (AUC) of the plasma levels over time was significantly lower for the (S)- than for the (R)-enantiomer-395.5 +/- 141.0 (SE) versus 882.7 +/- 126.4 ng. ml(-)(1). min (p < 0.05)-indicating preferential retention of (S)-albuterol in the lung. The R/S ratio in urine at 0. 5 h after albuterol was > 1, reflecting the higher plasma level of the (R)-enantiomer. In conclusion, preferential retention of the (S)- compared with the (R)-enantiomer in the lung could lead to accumulation of the (S)-enantiomer after long-term use of racemic albuterol.

Behavior of Tethered Meloidogyne incognita

The tethered-nematode technique was adapted for use with second-stage juveniles of Meloidogyne incognita. The data demonstrate that M. incognita exhibits the same patterns of behavior as adults of the free-living nematode, Caenorhabditis elegans. The principal differences are that M. incognita is slower and less regular in its behavior than C. elegans. The frequency of normal waves is about 0.2 Hz; that of reversal waves is about 0.06 Hz. Reversal bouts last about 1 minute. In response to a change in NaCl concentration, M. incognita modulates the probability of initiating a reversal bout in the same manner as C. elegans except that it responds more slowly and is repelled instead of attracted.

Adrenocorticotrophin and glucocorticoid response to exchange transfusion

Plasma adrenocorticotrophin (ACTH) and glucocorticoid concentrations were measured during and for 3 hours after exchange transfusion in four groups of infants. Transfusion with ACD blood via the umbilical artery were performed on 10 infants of 35--40 weeks gestation and 11 infants of 27 to 33 weeks gestation. Ten transfusions via the umbilical vein were performed with ACD blood and 9 with heparin blood on infants of 32 to 41 weeks gestation. In all four types of transfusion there was a significant washing out of ACTH and glucocorticoids from the baby. An associated rise of plasma ACTH and glucocorticoid levels indicated increased secretion in the larger infants transfused with ACD blood via the umbilical artery. Equivocal results were obtained in the other groups. After all types of transfusion plasma glucocorticoid levels remained relatively constant for one hour and then doubled and then doubled in the second and third hour. The results suggest that (a) exchange transfusion via the umbilical artery is more stressful than that via the umbilical vein, (b) the glucocorticoid response of premature infants to exchange transfusion is similar to that of mature ifants, (c) an unspecified stimulus, which is not solely hypoglycaemia nor the metabolic reaction to a citrate load, results in a rise in plasma glucocorticoid levels 2-3 hours after all types of transfusion.
