Abstract
IMPORTANCE The prevalence, pathophysiology, and long-term outcomes of COVID-19 (post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 [PASC] or "Long COVID") in children and young adults remain unknown. Studies must address the urgent need to define PASC, its mechanisms, and potential treatment targets in children and young adults. OBSERVATIONS We describe the protocol for the Pediatric Observational Cohort Study of the NIH's REsearching COVID to Enhance Recovery (RECOVER) Initiative. RECOVER-Pediatrics is an observational meta-cohort study of caregiver-child pairs (birth through 17 years) and young adults (18 through 25 years), recruited from more than 100 sites across the US. This report focuses on two of four cohorts that comprise RECOVER-Pediatrics: 1) a de novo RECOVER prospective cohort of children and young adults with and without previous or current infection; and 2) an extant cohort derived from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study (n = 10,000). The de novo cohort incorporates three tiers of data collection: 1) remote baseline assessments (Tier 1, n = 6000); 2) longitudinal follow-up for up to 4 years (Tier 2, n = 6000); and 3) a subset of participants, primarily the most severely affected by PASC, who will undergo deep phenotyping to explore PASC pathophysiology (Tier 3, n = 600). Youth enrolled in the ABCD study participate in Tier 1. The pediatric protocol was developed as a collaborative partnership of investigators, patients, researchers, clinicians, community partners, and federal partners, intentionally promoting inclusivity and diversity. The protocol is adaptive to facilitate responses to emerging science. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE RECOVER-Pediatrics seeks to characterize the clinical course, underlying mechanisms, and long-term effects of PASC from birth through 25 years old. RECOVER-Pediatrics is designed to elucidate the epidemiology, four-year clinical course, and sociodemographic correlates of pediatric PASC. The data and biosamples will allow examination of mechanistic hypotheses and biomarkers, thus providing insights into potential therapeutic interventions. Abstract
Background Trauma exposure is a risk factor for substance use disorders (SUD) among women. This study explores written content from an expressive writing (EW) intervention conducted within a residential SUD program to examine themes across trauma experiences and characterize their deep insight into such experiences. Materials and Methods This qualitative study is a secondary data analysis of written content of the first writing session from women (n = 44) randomized to an EW condition while in residential SUD treatment. Results Nearly all participants (72.7% African American; mean age 37.3 years) reported a significant trauma event (93.2%) with an average of 3.7 types of trauma events (54.4% had a current posttraumatic stress disorder diagnosis). Four primary themes emerged: (1) trauma across the lifespan; (2) loss of safety; (3) altered self-concept; and (4) desire to move on. Most participants identified interpersonal trauma, especially at an early age, as well as parental neglect and physical and/or sexual violence. These themes indicate a pattern of interpersonal betrayal and paint a picture of trauma and the subsequent "rippling effect" such that the physical, mental, and emotional consequences were often as impactful as the event itself. However, there was also a desire to move on and gain a sense of normalcy. Conclusions Findings highlight the importance of the written word and addressing underlying trauma in addiction treatment to facilitate healing and the woman's desire to move on.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nurses with a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree are essential to developing nursing knowledge, promoting health outcomes, and educating the next generation of nurses. Declining enrollment in nursing PhD programs calls for purposeful action. Guided by Bronfenbrenner's Ecological Systems Framework, this article outlines barriers and facilitators, and offers strategies to increase PhD enrollment. METHOD Extant literature and the authors' cumulative experiences in PhD education and research were reviewed to identify strategies to increase PhD enrollment. RESULTS Multilevel influences impede or facilitate enrollment in PhD programs. Strategies addressing individual and interpersonal influences included intentional personalized recruiting and early outreach to students at various levels of education. Institutional and organizational strategies included research partnerships and programs, and financial and infrastructure support. Sociocultural strategies included image branding and a positive social media presence supporting nurse scientists. CONCLUSION Strategies to enhance PhD enrollment across all levels can spark interest in nursing science and PhD enrollment. [J Nurs Educ. 2023;62(12):669-678.].

Abstract
AIM This study investigated the phenomenon of nurse loneliness as a potential contributor to burnout. BACKGROUND Nurse wellbeing is critical for safe and efficient healthcare delivery. However, evidence indicates nurses' wellbeing is at risk. The levels of burnout, the most commonly measured symptom of suboptimal wellbeing, are rising and may relate to a largely unexplored phenomenon: loneliness. METHODS A mixed-methods approach was used to investigate burnout and loneliness in direct-care nurses in four diverse hospitals in the midwestern and southeastern United States. Burnout and loneliness were measured, prevalence was estimated, and correlation was examined. Interpretive descriptive inquiry and analysis was used to develop a richer understanding of nurse loneliness in the context of burnout. While this study did not explicitly explore the impact of the global pandemic, data was collected in late 2021 and early 2022, during the Delta variant wave. RESULTS In the study population (n = 117), rates of burnout are high and positively correlate with loneliness. Qualitative interviews (n = 11) revealed that nurses feel unseen, emotionally detached from their work, and dehumanized. However, social connection with peers is protective and nurses still report a strong sense of devotion to the profession and solidarity with peers. CONCLUSIONS This study offers insight into nurse loneliness, highlighting the importance of social connectedness to improve nurse wellbeing.

Abstract
Purpose: To present the development protocol of the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale-United States (EPDS-US), an adapted version of the EPDS, that is inclusive and easy to understand for U.S. populations and incorporates a trauma-informed approach to perinatal mental health (PMH). Methods: Our team adapted the wording of the original EPDS to be more linguistically appropriate for current use with U.S. populations by incorporating principles from Trauma-Informed Care and the Cycle to Respectful Care. Results: Through small but impactful linguistic updates, the EPDS-US offers inclusive person-first language and eliminates confusing phrases or wording that may be perceived as judgmental. The goal of the adapted EPDS-US is to foster symptom disclosure in an environment of safety and trust. The EPDS-US removes preidentified barriers patients experience related to PMH screenings. Conclusions: The EPDS-US, a trauma-informed and respectful care screening tool, may lead to earlier recognition of symptoms, may allow for more person-focused treatment plans, and may serve as a platform for a culture change in addressing PMH, particularly when the screening tool is accompanied by open conversation, education, and resources. Validation studies are required at this time and this team welcomes direct communication with research and clinical sites interested in doing so.

Abstract
More than 1 in 5 pregnant people in the United States experience depressive symptoms. Although treatments exist, many people remain under- or un-treated due to concerns about stigma, side effects, and costs of medications or psychotherapy, particularly those who are marginalized (defined as those who are minoritized, low-income, or with low-educational attainment). Further, the standard depression treatments do not address social connectedness, which is a potentially modifiable factor involved in depressive symptom etiology. This protocol presents the rationale, design, and status of the two-arm longitudinal parallel group randomized controlled trial - the Mindful Moms Study - which aims to evaluate the effects and mechanisms of a group-based mindful physical activity (yoga) intervention in marginalized pregnant people with depressive symptoms (n = 200) compared to a prenatal education control group. The primary aim is to evaluate effects of group assignment on depressive symptom severity, anxiety, and perceived stress over time from baseline to six weeks postpartum. Secondary aims include understanding the role of social connectedness as a moderator of the effects and to identify genome-wide DNA methylation patterns associated with depressive symptoms and perceived social connectedness at postpartum. A focus on adequate symptom management through non-pharmacologic, accessible therapies that address social connectedness during pregnancy in marginalized women is an urgent clinical and research priority. The successful completion of this study will provide important insights into social connectedness as a mechanism to decrease depressive symptoms in a largely understudied population. Abstract
Our primary objective was to document COVID-19 induced changes to perinatal care across the USA and examine the implication of these changes for maternal mental health. We performed an observational cross-sectional study with convenience sampling using direct patient reports from 1918 postpartum and 3868 pregnant individuals collected between April 2020 and December 2020 from 10 states across the USA. We leverage a subgroup of these participants who gave birth prior to March 2020 to estimate the pre-pandemic prevalence of specific birthing practices as a comparison. Our primary analyses describe the prevalence and timing of perinatal care changes, compare perinatal care changes depending on when and where individuals gave birth, and assess the linkage between perinatal care alterations and maternal anxiety and depressive symptoms. Seventy-eight percent of pregnant participants and 63% of postpartum participants reported at least one change to their perinatal care between March and August 2020. However, the prevalence and nature of specific perinatal care changes occurred unevenly over time and across geographic locations. The separation of infants and mothers immediately after birth and the cancelation of prenatal visits were associated with worsened depression and anxiety symptoms in mothers after controlling for sociodemographic factors, mental health history, number of pregnancy complications, and general stress about the COVID-19 pandemic. Our analyses reveal widespread changes to perinatal care across the US that fluctuated depending on where and when individuals gave birth. Disruptions to perinatal care may also exacerbate mental health concerns, so focused treatments that can mitigate the negative psychiatric sequelae of interrupted care are warranted.

Abstract
The impact of COVID-19-related stress on perinatal women is of heightened public health concern given the established intergenerational impact of maternal stress-exposure on infants and fetuses. There is urgent need to characterize the coping styles associated with adverse psychosocial outcomes in perinatal women during the COVID-19 pandemic to help mitigate the potential for lasting sequelae on both mothers and infants. This study uses a data-driven approach to identify the patterns of behavioral coping strategies that associate with maternal psychosocial distress during the COVID-19 pandemic in a large multicenter sample of pregnant women (N = 2876) and postpartum women (N = 1536). Data was collected from 9 states across the United States from March to October 2020. Women reported behaviors they were engaging in to manage pandemic-related stress, symptoms of depression, anxiety and global psychological distress, as well as changes in energy levels, sleep quality and stress levels. Using latent profile analysis, we identified four behavioral phenotypes of coping strategies. Critically, phenotypes with high levels of passive coping strategies (increased screen time, social media, and intake of comfort foods) were associated with elevated symptoms of depression, anxiety, and global psychological distress, as well as worsening stress and energy levels, relative to other coping phenotypes. In contrast, phenotypes with high levels of active coping strategies (social support, and self-care) were associated with greater resiliency relative to other phenotypes. The identification of these widespread coping phenotypes reveals novel behavioral patterns associated with risk and resiliency to pandemic-related stress in perinatal women. These findings may contribute to early identification of women at risk for poor long-term outcomes and indicate malleable targets for interventions aimed at mitigating lasting sequelae on women and children during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract
There is a paucity of research exploring how relationships with household pets may impact maternal mental health. We are unaware of any study to date that has examined associations between individuals' relationships with their pets and psychological adjustment in the perinatal period. Using a biobehavioral lens, this paper provides a narrative overview of the literature on perinatal mental health and human-animal interaction (HAI). We focus on the role of social relationships, stress, and stress reduction in relation to perinatal mental health; the role of HAI in perceptions of social support, stressors, and stress reduction; and gaps in empirical knowledge concerning the role of HAI in perinatal mental health. Finally, we integrate contemporary biobehavioral models of perinatal mental health and HAI (i.e., Comprehensive Model of Mental Health during the Perinatal Period and the HAI-HPA Transactional Model) to propose a new conceptual framework that depicts ways in which HAI during the perinatal period may influence maternal and child health and wellbeing. To our knowledge, this is the first paper to consider the role of HAI in biobehavioral responses and mental health during the perinatal period. We conclude with recommendations for future research and improved perinatal care.

Abstract
Mid-career nurse scientists are at risk of burnout and departure from research-focused roles due to a myriad of reasons, including a nationwide faculty shortage, vacant administrative roles, and the challenging extramural funding environment. Retention and success of mid-career scientists in any health-related discipline is essential to maintain educational and research endeavors that are important for public health and well-being. This commentary provides an account of recent efforts to address these issues, from the perspective of a former fellow in the Society of Behavioral Medicine Leadership Institute. Although these efforts are focused specifically on the needs of nurse scientists, the topic is relevant to researchers in any discipline. The intent of this commentary is for others to benefit from the lessons learned and to build upon our current efforts to help mid-career scientists thrive, not just survive.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Mid-career nurse scientists in academia face many challenges that can lead to burnout and exiting the profession. Finding ways to increase satisfaction and support will help retain these critical faculty in research positions. PURPOSE Describe areas of satisfaction and challenges to success in the faculty role for mid-career nurse scientists in academia. METHOD Cross-sectional, descriptive. A total of 65 self-identified mid-career nurse scientists completed an online survey. FINDINGS Mid-career nurse scientists were most satisfied with their role at their organization, least satisfied with time for research and opportunities to receive mentoring. They felt moderately supported by colleagues and deans, least supported by their ADR. Differences in satisfaction among nurse scientists in different levels of research institutions were noted. DISCUSSION Challenges to success in mid-career nurse scientists exist. Loss of nurse scientists at mid-career threatens to undermine the knowledge base of the individuals who mentor the next generation of scientists. The discipline must support mid-career scientists in their efforts to be successful in research.

Abstract
Background: It is well-documented that the mental health of pregnant and postpartum women is essential for maternal, child, and family well-being. Of major public health concern is the perinatal mental health impacts that may occur during the ongoing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. It is essential to explore the symptom experience and predictors of mental health status, including the relationship between media use and mental health. Materials and Methods: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the experiences of pregnant and postpartum women (n = 524) in the United States in the early phase of the COVID-19 pandemic. This cross-sectional online observational study collected psychosocial quantitative and qualitative survey data in adult pregnant and postpartum (up to 6 months postdelivery) women in April-June 2020. Results: Multivariable linear regression models were used to evaluate predictors of depressive symptoms, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder. The most common predictors were job insecurity, family concerns, eating comfort foods, resilience/adaptability score, sleep, and use of social and news media. Qualitative themes centered on pervasive uncertainty and anxiety; grief about losses; gratitude for shifting priorities; and use of self-care methods including changing media use. Conclusions: This study provides information to identify risk for anxiety, depression, and PTSD symptoms in perinatal women during acute public health situations. Women with family and job concerns and low resilience/adaptability scores seem to be at high risk of psychological sequelae. Although use of social media is thought to improve social connectedness, our results indicate that increased media consumption is related to increased anxiety symptoms.

Chronic low back pain (cLBP) rates among younger individuals are rising. Although pain and disability are often less severe, underlying changes in trunk behavior may be responsible for recurrence. We examine the biomarker capacity of a simple Trunk Compliance Index (TCI) to distinguish individuals with and without cLBP. A random subset (n = 49) of the RELIEF RCT were matched to healthy controls for sex, age, height and weight. We measured TCI (as displacement/ weight-normalized perturbation force) using anthropometrically-matched, suddenly-applied pulling perturbations to the trunk segment, randomized across three planes of motion (antero-posterior, medio-lateral, and rotational). Mean differences between cLBP, sex and perturbation direction were assessed with repeated-measures analysis of variance. Discriminatory accuracy of TCI was assessed using Receiver Operator Characteristic (ROC) analysis. Baseline characteristics between groups were equivalent (x̅ [range]): sex (57% female / group), age (23.0 [18-45], 22.8 [18-45]), height, cm (173.0 [156.5-205], 171.3 [121.2-197], weight, kg (71.8 [44.5-116.6], 71.7 [46.8-117.5]) with cLBP associated with significantly lower TCI for 5 of 6 directions (range mean difference, - 5.35: - 1.49, range 95% CI [- 6.46: - 2.18 to - 4.35: - 0.30]. Classification via ROC showed that composite TCI had high discriminatory potential (area under curve [95% CI], 0.90 [0.84-0.96]), driven by TCI from antero-posterior perturbations (area under curve [95% CI], 0.99 [0.97-1.00]). Consistent reductions in TCI suggests global changes in trunk mechanics that may go undetected in classic clinical examination. Evaluation of TCI in younger adults with mild pain and disability may serve as a biomarker for chronicity, leading to improved preventative measures in cLBP.Trial Registration and Funding RELIEF is registered with clinicaltrials.gov (NCT01854892) and funded by the NIH National Center for Complementary & Integrative Health (R01AT006978).

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nearly 20% of women in the United States experience depressive symptoms during the perinatal period, with known detrimental effects for the mother, child, and family. Depressive symptoms affect motivation to engage in healthy behaviors and self-management of symptoms. PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of women with depressive symptoms who participated in a 12-week mindful physical activity intervention (Mindful Moms) throughout their pregnancy. STUDY DESIGN In this qualitative study, we explore the lived experience of women with depressive symptoms who participated in Mindful Moms, a self-management intervention involving nurse-led motivational sessions and group-based mindful physical activity (yoga). METHODS Semistructured interviews conducted at approximately 6 weeks postpartum provided rich qualitative data that was analyzed using a phenomenological approach. RESULTS Twenty-five women participated. Findings suggest that participants in Mindful Moms felt empowered to manage their depressive symptoms through the combination of four key factors: a newly recognized need for help, a felt sense of physical and emotional benefit from participation, the power of shared safe space with other pregnant women, support from study staff, and an overall sense of empowerment. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS Mindful Moms appears to be a feasible and acceptable approach to enhancing motivation to self-manage depressive symptoms in pregnant women. Nurses working with childbearing women should be aware of the potential benefits of self-management strategies, such as mindful physical activity and motivational interviewing, for women facing perinatal depressive symptoms.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nonpharmacological and accessible therapies that engage individuals in self-management are needed to address depressive symptoms in pregnancy. The 12-week "Mindful Moms" intervention was designed to empower pregnant women with depressive symptomatology to create personal goals and engage in mindful physical activity using prenatal yoga. OBJECTIVES This longitudinal pilot study evaluated the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary effects of the "Mindful Moms" intervention in pregnant women with depressive symptoms. METHODS We evaluated enrollment and retention data (feasibility) and conducted semistructured interviews (acceptability). We evaluated the intervention's effects over time on participants' depressive symptoms, anxiety, perceived stress, self-efficacy, and maternal-child attachment, and we compared findings to an archival comparison group, also assessed longitudinally. RESULTS Enrollment and retention rates and positive feedback from participants support the intervention's acceptability and feasibility. "Mindful Moms" participants experienced decreases in depressive symptoms, perceived stress, anxiety, ruminations, and maternal-child attachment and no change in physical activity self-efficacy from baseline to postintervention. Comparisons of the "Mindful Moms" intervention to the comparison groups over time indicated differences in depressive symptoms between all groups and a trend in differences in perceived stress. DISCUSSION Results support the feasibility and acceptability of "Mindful Moms" for pregnant women with depressive symptoms and suggest that further research is warranted to evaluate this intervention for reducing depressive and related symptoms. Lack of a concurrent control group, with equivalent attention from study staff, and no randomization limit the generalizability of this study; yet, these preliminary findings support future large-scale randomized controlled trials to further evaluate this promising intervention.

Abstract
Perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs) affect up to 20% of pregnant and postpartum women and can have negative sequelae for maternal-child health. Nurses with clinical and research roles are on the front line of efforts to assess for and assist with prevention and intervention with PMAD symptoms. Thus, they can play an essential role in enhancing the mental well-being of women in the perinatal period and maternal-child health outcomes. The aim of this article is to assist nurses in this work by outlining the Comprehensive Model of Mental Health during the Perinatal Period, a conceptual framework for considering clinical and research opportunities to enhance perinatal mental health. The framework uses key principles that recognize biopsychoneuroimmunologic mechanisms involved in mental health; the key role that the experience of matrescence ("becoming a mother") plays in mental health and maternal-child health; and the mother-infant dyad as the functional unit during the perinatal period. Examples are provided of how the key principles of this framework might be used to enhance research and clinical practice about PMADs and, ultimately, enhance maternal-child health outcomes.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Children with severe asthma may benefit from non-pharmacological approaches to symptom management, yet little is known regarding the impact of mind-body approaches such as mindful yoga in this population. This pilot study examined the tolerability, feasibility, acceptability and immediate effects of a mindful yoga intervention in children with severe asthma. METHOD Fifteen children ages 7-11 with severe asthma participated in a single mindful yoga session, followed by semi-structured interviews with the child and caregiver. Vital signs and pulmonary function tests were collected pre- and post-intervention. RESULTS All children reported positive experiences and caregivers were generally supportive of their participation. One child experienced self-limited bronchoconstriction with asthma symptoms. There was no significant change in lung function or vital signs after the mindful yoga session. DISCUSSION Our results warrant additional larger studies to evaluate the safety and benefits of mindful yoga in children with severe asthma.

Abstract
PROBLEM Asthma affects almost 15% of children in the United States. Despite the availability of treatments and educational methods, children with asthma continue to report an impaired quality of life, including symptoms of anxiety and inability to participate in physical activity. As complementary health approaches are becoming more popular and show promise in the management of many chronic diseases, the purpose of this integrative review is to examine the state of the science regarding popular complementary health approaches- yoga and mindfulness- for children and adolescents with asthma. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA A comprehensive search of five databases for peer reviewed articles was performed to identify experimental and non-experimental studies. The search for each database was performed from the inception of each to January 2020 and limited to the English language. The search included terminology that addressed the concepts of "asthma", "yoga" and "mindfulness". SAMPLE A total of eleven articles met the criteria for review from the years 1991 to 2019. RESULTS Nine publications focused on the use of yoga in children and adolescents with asthma and two publications focused on mindfulness in adolescents with asthma. CONCLUSIONS Interventions involving either mindfulness or yoga may be effective in reducing stress and anxiety and improving quality of life and lung function in this population. IMPLICATIONS Mindfulness intervention studies in the pediatric and adolescent asthma population are warranted as are additional studies that include the use of yoga with skills in mindfulness in order to evaluate their physiological and psychological effects.

Abstract
PURPOSE Severe asthma is an inflammatory illness associated with adverse health outcomes and behaviors in children, such as decreased quality of life, impaired sleep, and increased medical costs and morbidity. CONCLUSIONS Children with severe asthma frequently exhibit a cycle of health and behaviors which contribute to these adverse health outcomes, consisting of decreased physical activity, increased stress, and increased airway inflammation and asthma exacerbations. School-age children, in particular, are a vulnerable population because they not only rely on others for their care but also suffer from a chronic illness and are at risk for unequal healthcare access and health outcomes. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS Currently, there is no one nursing theory that adequately addresses the vulnerability, cycle of health and behaviors, and adverse health outcomes of children with severe asthma. By integrating key concepts from three vulnerability theories and presenting a modified conceptual framework, this paper aims to demonstrate how the use of this new conceptual framework may assist nurses in evaluating the unique needs of school-age children with severe asthma to provide best practices and develop appropriate interventions.

Abstract
The present study investigated whether a brief yoga intervention would be feasible and acceptable for dental students. Based on empirical evidence about state mindfulness (SM), change in self-reported SM was assessed as a measure of the intervention's feasibility and acceptability. A repeated-measures within-subjects design was used. Participants were third- and fourth-year dental and dental hygiene students (76% female). The State Mindfulness Scale (SMS), a validated self-report measure of SM with 2 subscales, Mind and Body, was used. Students (n = 132) completed the SMS immediately prior to and following a 1-hour yoga intervention. Dispositional mindfulness, burnout, perceived stress, and depressive symptoms were also investigated as moderators of changes in state mindfulness to determine whether psychological variables had an effect on feasibility in this sample. Total SM significantly increased from pre- to post-intervention, t(46) = 10.26, P < .001. An analysis of covariance showed a significant interaction effect in the relationship between pre-/post-intervention SM of Mind (β = 0.51, P = .048), such that higher levels of stress saw greater increases in SM of Mind. No other psychological variables were significant moderators. A brief yoga intervention for dental students significantly increased SM, suggesting that yoga interventions may be feasible and acceptable in this population. The results of moderation analyses suggest that a brief yoga intervention may be especially effective at increasing SM for those with high levels of stress. Future research should use a randomized control group to test group differences in SM after a brief yoga intervention for dental students.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Perinatal depressive symptoms have been linked to adverse maternal and infant health outcomes. The etiology associated with perinatal depressive psychopathology is poorly understood, but accumulating evidence suggests that understanding inter-individual differences in DNA methylation (DNAm) patterning may provide insight regarding the genomic regions salient to the risk liability of perinatal depressive psychopathology. RESULTS Genome-wide DNAm was measured in maternal peripheral blood using the Infinium MethylationEPIC microarray. Ninety-two participants (46% African-American) had DNAm samples that passed all quality control metrics, and all participants were within 7 months of delivery. Linear models were constructed to identify differentially methylated sites and regions, and permutation testing was utilized to assess significance. Differentially methylated regions (DMRs) were defined as genomic regions of consistent DNAm change with at least two probes within 1 kb of each other. Maternal age, current smoking status, estimated cell-type proportions, ancestry-relevant principal components, days since delivery, and chip position served as covariates to adjust for technical and biological factors. Current postpartum depressive symptoms were measured using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale. Ninety-eight DMRs were significant (false discovery rate < 5%) and overlapped 92 genes. Three of the regions overlap loci from the latest Psychiatric Genomics Consortium meta-analysis of depression. CONCLUSIONS Many of the genes identified in this analysis corroborate previous allelic, transcriptomic, and DNAm association results related to depressive phenotypes. Future work should integrate data from multi-omic platforms to understand the functional relevance of these DMRs and refine DNAm association results by limiting phenotypic heterogeneity and clarifying if DNAm differences relate to the timing of onset, severity, duration of perinatal mental health outcomes of the current pregnancy or to previous history of depressive psychopathology.

Abstract
PURPOSE To contribute to the treatment fidelity literature by providing real-world examples and suggestion for future research and potential clinical application, this article reports on implementation, assessment, and evaluation of treatment fidelity in mind-body self-care approaches in at-risk women. METHOD Aligning with best practices, treatment fidelity was integrated into three randomized clinical trials. The first examined the effects of a tai chi intervention designed to decrease cardiometabolic risk factors in women; the second examined the effects of a tailored guided imagery intervention on pregnancy outcomes in African American women; and the third explored effects of a mindful physical activity intervention (yoga) on psychological outcomes in women with moderate to severe depressive symptoms. FINDINGS Each of the studies successfully designed, implemented, and evaluated strategies to address recommended treatment fidelity components. These strategies provided qualitative and quantitative data that informed intervention refinement, directions for future research, and application in clinical practice. CONCLUSIONS The treatment fidelity framework used here is based on best practices and was a feasible and reliable approach for ensuring and reporting on treatment fidelity, which is contributing to future research to foster translation of potentially effective mind-body self-care approaches into practice.

Abstract
PURPOSE The goal of the Pregnancy, Race, Environment, Genes study was to understand how social and environmental determinants of health (SEDH), pregnancy-specific environments (PSE) and biological processes influence the timing of birth and account for the racial disparity in preterm birth. The study followed a racially diverse longitudinal cohort throughout pregnancy and included repeated measures of PSE and DNA methylation (DNAm) over the course of gestation and up to 1 year into the postpartum period. PARTICIPANTS All women were between 18 and 40 years of age with singleton pregnancies and no diagnosis of diabetes or indication of assisted reproductive technology. Both mother and father had to self-identify as either African-American (AA) or European-American (EA). Maternal peripheral blood samples along with self-report questionnaires measuring SEDH and PSE factors were collected at four pregnancy visits, and umbilical cord blood was obtained at birth. A subset of participants returned for two additional postpartum visits, during which additional questionnaires and maternal blood samples were collected. The pregnancy and postpartum extension included n=240 (AA=126; EA=114) and n=104 (AA=50; EA=54), respectively. FINDINGS TO DATE One hundred seventy-seven women (AA=89, EA=88) met full inclusion criteria out of a total of 240 who were initially enrolled. Of the 63 participants who met exclusion criteria after enrolment, 44 (69.8%) were associated with a medical reason. Mean gestational age at birth was significantly shorter for the AA participants by 5.1 days (M=272.5 (SD=10.5) days vs M=277.6 (SD=8.3)). FUTURE PLANS Future studies will focus on identifying key environmental factors that influence DNAm change across pregnancy and account for racial differences in preterm birth.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Depression is a chronic mental health condition that affects millions of individuals worldwide. It is well-established that psychological stress plays an integral role in depression and that depression has numerous negative health outcomes. However, a closer look at components of stress vulnerabilities and depression is required to allow for the development and testing of appropriate interventions. AIMS AND DISCUSSION This article describes a conceptual framework about the complex and bidirectional relationship between stress vulnerability, depression, and health outcomes in women. The authors elucidate how the framework can be applied in clinical research about cellular aging and on the mechanisms of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) for depression, using yoga as an example of a CAM modality. CONCLUSION The proposed conceptual framework may be helpful for adding depth to the body of knowledge about the use of mind-body therapies for individuals at high risk of stress vulnerability and/or depression.

Abstract
An understanding of imposed cultural norms allows the scientist, researcher, and health care practitioner to move beyond the social construction of gender and illness. From Aristotle's theory of reproduction to neurological and psychological research asserting sex as destiny to present-day attitudes toward intersexuality, we can trace the conceptualization of women in terms of biological inferiority. These theories elucidate the ways in which the cultural assumptions influence the institution of scientific inquiry and vice versa. To assure equal and fair health care practices, a paradigm shift is called for that actively accepts feminist research practices and rejects culturally dominant methods of research in medicine and science.
