Solvent Controlled Generation of Spin Active Polarons in Two-Dimensional Material under UV Light Irradiation

Polarons belong to a class of extensively studied quasiparticles that have found applications spanning diverse fields, including charge transport, colossal magnetoresistance, thermoelectricity, (multi)ferroism, optoelectronics, and photovoltaics. It is notable, though, that their interaction with the local environment has been overlooked so far. We report an unexpected phenomenon of the solvent-induced generation of polaronic spin active states in a two-dimensional (2D) material fluorographene under UV light. Furthermore, we present compelling evidence of the solvent-specific nature of this phenomenon. The generation of spin-active states is robust in acetone, moderate in benzene, and absent in cyclohexane. Continuous wave X-band electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy experiments revealed a massive increase in the EPR signal for fluorographene dispersed in acetone under UV-light irradiation, while the system did not show any significant signal under dark conditions and without the solvent. The patterns appeared due to the generation of transient magnetic photoexcited states of polaronic character, which encompassed the net 1/2 spin moment detectable by EPR. Advanced ab initio calculations disclosed that polarons are plausibly formed at radical sites in fluorographene which interact strongly with acetone molecules in their vicinity. Additionally, we present a comprehensive scenario for multiplication of polaronic spin active species, highlighting the pivotal role of the photoinduced charge transfer from the solvent to the electrophilic radical centers in fluorographene. We believe that the solvent-tunable polaron formation with the use of UV light and an easily accessible 2D nanomaterial opens up a wide range of future applications, ranging from molecular sensing to magneto-optical devices.

Magnetically Recyclable Borane Lewis Acid Catalyst for Hydrosilylation of Imines and Reductive Amination of Carbonyls

Fluorinated arylborane-based Lewis acid catalysts have shown remarkable activity and serve as ideal examples of transition metal-free catalysts for diverse organic transformations. However, their homogeneous nature poses challenges in terms of recyclability and separation from reaction mixtures. This work presents an efficient technique for the heterogenization of boron Lewis acid catalysts by anchoring Piers' borane to allyl-functionalized iron oxide. This catalyst demonstrates excellent activity in the hydrosilylation of imines and the reductive amination of carbonyls using various silanes as reducing agents under mild reaction conditions. The catalyst exhibits broad tolerance towards a wide range of functional substrates. Furthermore, it exhibits good recyclability and can be easily separated from the products using an external magnetic field. This work represents a significant advance in the development of sustainable heterogenous metal-free catalysts for organic transformations.

Linear-Structure Single-Atom Gold(I) Catalyst for Dehydrogenative Coupling of Organosilanes with Alcohols

A strategy for the synthesis of a gold-based single-atom catalyst (SAC) via a one-step room temperature reduction of Au(III) salt and stabilization of Au(I) ions on nitrile-functionalized graphene (cyanographene; G-CN) is described. The graphene-supported G(CN)-Au catalyst exhibits a unique linear structure of the Au(I) active sites promoting a multistep mode of action in dehydrogenative coupling of organosilanes with alcohols under mild reaction conditions as proven by advanced XPS, XAFS, XANES, and EPR techniques along with DFT calculations. The linear structure being perfectly accessible toward the reactant molecules and the cyanographene-induced charge transfer resulting in the exclusive Au(I) valence state contribute to the superior efficiency of the emerging two-dimensional SAC. The developed G(CN)-Au SAC, despite its low metal loading (ca. 0.6 wt %), appear to be the most efficient catalyst for Si-H bond activation with a turnover frequency of up to 139,494 h-1 and high selectivities, significantly overcoming all reported homogeneous gold catalysts. Moreover, it can be easily prepared in a multigram batch scale, is recyclable, and works well toward more than 40 organosilanes. This work opens the door for applications of SACs with a linear structure of the active site for advanced catalytic applications.

Lewis Acid Catalyzed Amide Bond Formation in Covalent Graphene-MOF Hybrids

Covalent hybrids of graphene and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) hold immense potential in various technologies, particularly catalysis and energy applications, due to the advantageous combination of conductivity and porosity. The formation of an amide bond between carboxylate-functionalized graphene acid (GA) and amine-functionalized UiO-66-NH2 MOF (Zr6O4(OH)4(NH2-bdc)6, with NH2-bdc2- = 2-amino-1,4-benzenedicarboxylate and UiO = Universitetet i Oslo) is a highly efficient strategy for creating such covalent hybrids. Previous experimental studies have demonstrated exceptional properties of these conductive networks, including significant surface area and functionalized hierarchical pores, showing promise as a chemiresistive CO2 sensor and electrode materials for asymmetric supercapacitors. However, the molecular-level origin of the covalent linkages between pristine MOF and GA layers remains unclear. In this study, density functional theory (DFT) calculations were conducted to elucidate the mechanism of amide bond formation between GA and UiO-66-NH2. The theoretical calculations emphasize the crucial role of zirconium within UiO-66, which acts as a catalyst in the reaction cycle. Both commonly observed hexa-coordinated and less common hepta-coordinated zirconium complexes are considered as intermediates. By gaining detailed insights into the binding interactions between graphene derivatives and MOFs, strategies for tailored syntheses of such nanocomposite materials can be developed.

Magnetic Polaron States in Photoluminescent Carbon Dots Enable Hydrogen Peroxide Photoproduction

Photoactivation of aspartic acid-based carbon dots (Asp-CDs) induces the generation of spin-separated species, including electron/hole (e- /h+ ) polarons and spin-coupled triplet states, as uniquely confirmed by the light-induced electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy. The relative population of the e- /h+ pairs and triplet species depends on the solvent polarity, featuring a substantial stabilization of the triplet state in a non-polar environment (benzene). The electronic properties of the photoexcited Asp-CDs emerge from their spatial organization being interpreted as multi-layer assemblies containing a hydrophobic carbonaceous core and a hydrophilic oxygen and nitrogen functionalized surface. The system properties are dissected theoretically by density functional theory in combination with molecular dynamics simulations on quasi-spherical assemblies of size-variant flakelike model systems, revealing the importance of size dependence and interlayer effects. The formation of the spin-separated states in Asp-CDs enables the photoproduction of hydrogen peroxide (H2 O2 ) from water and water/2-propanol mixture via a water oxidation reaction.

Local Photochemical Nanoscopy of Hot-Carrier-Driven Catalytic Reactions Using Plasmonic Nanosystems

Nanoscale investigation of the reactivity of photocatalytic systems is crucial for their fundamental understanding and improving their design and applicability. Here, we present a photochemical nanoscopy technique that unlocks the local spatial detection of molecular products during plasmonic hot-carrier-driven photocatalytic reactions with nanometric precision. By applying the methodology to Au/TiO₂ plasmonic photocatalysts, we experimentally and theoretically determined that smaller and denser Au nanoparticle arrays present lower optical contribution with quantum efficiency in hot-hole-driven photocatalysis closely related to the population heterogeneity. As expected, the highest quantum yield from a redox probe oxidation is achieved at the plasmon peak. Investigating a single plasmonic nanodiode, we unravel the areas where oxidation and reduction products are evolved with subwavelength resolution (∼200 nm), illustrating the bipolar behavior of such nanosystems. These results open the way to quantitative investigations at the nanoscale to evaluate the photocatalytic reactivity of low-dimensional materials in a variety of chemical reactions.

Acidic graphene organocatalyst for the superior transformation of wastes into high-added-value chemicals

Our dependence on finite fossil fuels and the insecure energy supply chains have stimulated intensive research for sustainable technologies. Upcycling glycerol, produced from biomass fermentation and as a biodiesel formation byproduct, can substantially contribute in circular carbon economy. Here, we report glycerol's solvent-free and room-temperature conversion to high-added-value chemicals via a reusable graphene catalyst (G-ASA), functionalized with a natural amino acid (taurine). Theoretical studies unveil that the superior performance of the catalyst (surpassing even homogeneous, industrial catalysts) is associated with the dual role of the covalently linked taurine, boosting the catalyst's acidity and affinity for the reactants. Unlike previous catalysts, G-ASA exhibits excellent activity (7508 mmol g^-1 h^-1) and selectivity (99.9%) for glycerol conversion to solketal, an additive for improving fuels' quality and a precursor of commodity and fine chemicals. Notably, the catalyst is also particularly active in converting oils to biodiesel, demonstrating its general applicability.

Graphene-Based Metal-Organic Framework Hybrids for Applications in Catalysis, Environmental, and Energy Technologies

Current energy and environmental challenges demand the development and design of multifunctional porous materials with tunable properties for catalysis, water purification, and energy conversion and storage. Because of their amenability to de novo reticular chemistry, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have become key materials in this area. However, their usefulness is often limited by low chemical stability, conductivity and inappropriate pore sizes. Conductive two-dimensional (2D) materials with robust structural skeletons and/or functionalized surfaces can form stabilizing interactions with MOF components, enabling the fabrication of MOF nanocomposites with tunable pore characteristics. Graphene and its functional derivatives are the largest class of 2D materials and possess remarkable compositional versatility, structural diversity, and controllable surface chemistry. Here, we critically review current knowledge concerning the growth, structure, and properties of graphene derivatives, MOFs, and their graphene@MOF composites as well as the associated structure-property-performance relationships. Synthetic strategies for preparing graphene@MOF composites and tuning their properties are also comprehensively reviewed together with their applications in gas storage/separation, water purification, catalysis (organo-, electro-, and photocatalysis), and electrochemical energy storage and conversion. Current challenges in the development of graphene@MOF hybrids and their practical applications are addressed, revealing areas for future investigation. We hope that this review will inspire further exploration of new graphene@MOF hybrids for energy, electronic, biomedical, and photocatalysis applications as well as studies on previously unreported properties of known hybrids to reveal potential "diamonds in the rough".

Coordination effects on the binding of late 3d single metal species to cyanographene

Anchoring single metal atoms on suitable substrates is a convenient route towards materials with unique electronic and magnetic properties exploitable in a wide range of applications including sensors, data storage, and single atom catalysis (SAC). Among a large portfolio of available substrates, carbon-based materials derived from graphene and its derivatives have received growing concern due to their high affinity to metals combined with biocompatibility, low toxicity, and accessibility. Cyanographene (GCN) as highly functionalized graphene containing homogeneously distributed nitrile groups perpendicular to the surface offers exceptionally favourable arrangement for anchoring metal atoms enabling efficient charge exchange between the metal and the substrate. However, the binding characteristics of metal species can be significantly affected by the coordination effects. Here we employed density functional theory (DFT) calculations to analyse the role of coordination in the binding of late 3d cations (Fe²⁺, Fe³⁺, Co²⁺, Ni²⁺, Cu²⁺, Cu⁺, and Zn²⁺) to GCN in aqueous solutions. The inspection of several plausible coordination types revealed the most favourable arrangements. Among the studied species, copper cations were found to be the most tightly bonded to GCN, which was also confirmed by the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS), and isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) measurements. In general, the inclusion of coordination effects significantly reduced the binding affinities predicted by implicit solvation models. Clearly, to build-up reliable models of SAC architectures in the environments enabling the formation of a coordination sphere, such effects need to be properly taken into account.

Band gap and Morphology Engineering of Hematite Nanoflakes from an Ex Situ Sn Doping for Enhanced Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting

In this article, we report a simple ex situ Sn-doping method on hematite nanoflakes (coded as MSnO2-H) that can protect the nanoflake (NF) morphology against the 800 °C high-temperature annealing process and activate the photoresponse of hematite until 800 nm wavelength excitation. MSnO2-H has been fabricated by dropping SnCl4 ethanol solution on hematite nanoflakes homogeneously grown over the conductive FTO glass substrate and annealed at 500 °C to synthesize the SnO2 nanoparticles on hematite NFs. The Sn-treated samples were then placed in a furnace again, and the sintering process was conducted at 800 °C for 15 min. During this step, structure deformation of hematite occurs normally due to the grain boundary motion and oriented attachment. However, in the case of MSnO2-H, the outer SnO2 nanoparticles efficiently prevented a shape deformation and maintained the nanoflake shape owing to the encapsulation of hematite NFs. Furthermore, the interface of hematite/SnO2 nanoparticles became the spots for a heavy Sn ion doping. We demonstrated the generation of the newly localized states, resulting in an extension of the photoresponse of hematite until 800 nm wavelength light irradiation. Furthermore, we demonstrated that SnO2 nanoparticles can effectively act as a passivation layer, which can reduce the onset potential of hematite for water splitting redox reactions. The optimized MSnO2-H nanostructures showed a 2.84 times higher photocurrent density and 300 mV reduced onset potential compared with a pristine hematite nanoflake photoanode.

Emerging graphene derivatives as active 2D coordination platforms for single-atom catalysts

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) based on graphene derivatives are an emerging and growing class of materials functioning as two-dimensional (2D) metal-coordination scaffolds with intriguing properties. Recently, owing to the rich chemistry of fluorographene, new avenues have opened toward graphene derivatives with selective, spacer-free, and dense functionalization, acting as in-plane or out-of-plane metal coordination ligands. The particular structural features give rise to intriguing phenomena occurring between the coordinated metals and the graphene backbone. These include redox processes, charge transfer, emergence, and stabilization of rare or otherwise unstable metal valence states, as well as metal-support and metal-metal synergism. The vast potential of such systems has been demonstrated as enzyme mimics for cooperative mixed-valence SACs, ethanol fuel cells, and CO₂ fixation; however, it is anticipated that their impact will further expand toward diverse fields, e.g., advanced organic transformations, electrochemical energy storage, and energy harvesting.

Intermetallic Copper-Based Electride Catalyst with High Activity for C-H Oxidation and Cycloaddition of CO2 into Epoxides

Inorganic electrides have been proved to be efficient hosts for incorporating transition metals, which can effectively act as active sites giving an outstanding catalytic performance. Here, it is demonstrated that a reusable and recyclable (for more than 7 times) copper-based intermetallic electride catalyst (LaCu0.67 Si1.33 ), in which the Cu sites activated by anionic electrons with low-work function are uniformly dispersed in the lattice framework, shows vast potential for the selective C-H oxidation of industrially important hydrocarbons and cycloaddition of CO2 with epoxide. This leads to the production of value-added cyclic carbonates under mild reaction conditions. Importantly, the LaCu0.67 Si1.33 catalyst enables much higher turnover frequencies for the C-H oxidation (up to 25 276 h-1 ) and cycloaddition of CO2 into epoxide (up to 800 000 h-1 ), thus exceeding most nonnoble as well as noble metal catalysts. Density functional theory investigations have revealed that the LaCu0.67 Si1.33 catalyst is involved in the conversion of N-hydroxyphthalimide (NHPI) into the phthalimido-N-oxyl (PINO), which then triggers selective abstraction of an H atom from ethylbenzene for the generation of a radical susceptible to further oxygenation in the presence of O2 .

Graphene Nanobeacons with High-Affinity Pockets for Combined, Selective, and Effective Decontamination and Reagentless Detection of Heavy Metals

Access to clean water for drinking, sanitation, and irrigation is a major sustainable development goal of the United Nations. Thus, technologies for cleaning water and quality-monitoring must become widely accessible and of low-cost, while being effective, selective, sustainable, and eco-friendly. To meet this challenge, hetero-bifunctional nanographene fluorescent beacons with high-affinity pockets for heavy metals are developed, offering top-rated and selective adsorption for cadmium and lead, reaching 870 and 450 mg g^-1 , respectively. The heterobifunctional and multidentate pockets also operate as selective gates for fluorescence signal regulation with sub-nanomolar sensitivity (0.1 and 0.2 nm for Pb²⁺ and Cd²⁺ , respectively), due to binding affinities as low as those of antigen-antibody interactions. Importantly, the acid-proof nanographenes can be fully regenerated and reused. Their broad visible-light absorption offers an additional mode for water-quality monitoring based on ultra-low cost and user-friendly reagentless paper detection with the naked-eye at a limit of detection of 1 and 10 ppb for Pb²⁺ and Cd²⁺ ions, respectively. This work shows that photoactive nanomaterials, densely-functionalized with strong, yet selective ligands for targeted contaminants, can successfully combine features such as excellent adsorption, reusability, and sensing capabilities, in a way to extend the material's applicability, its life-cycle, and value-for-money.

Fast and selective reduction of nitroarenes under visible light with an earth-abundant plasmonic photocatalyst

Reduction of nitroaromatics to the corresponding amines is a key process in the fine and bulk chemicals industry to produce polymers, pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals and dyes. However, their effective and selective reduction requires high temperatures and pressurized hydrogen and involves noble metal-based catalysts. Here we report on an earth-abundant, plasmonic nano-photocatalyst, with an excellent reaction rate towards the selective hydrogenation of nitroaromatics. With solar light as the only energy input, the chalcopyrite catalyst operates through the combined action of hot holes and photothermal effects. Ultrafast laser transient absorption and light-induced electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopies have unveiled the energy matching of the hot holes in the valence band of the catalyst with the frontier orbitals of the hydrogen and electron donor, via a transient coordination intermediate. Consequently, the reusable and sustainable copper-iron-sulfide (CuFeS₂) catalyst delivers previously unattainable turnover frequencies, even in large-scale reactions, while the cost-normalized production rate stands an order of magnitude above the state of the art.

Graphene oxide interaction with Lemna minor: Root barrier strong enough to prevent nanoblade-morphology-induced toxicity

The production of graphene oxide (GO) along with its applications in various aquatic environments is vastly increasing thanks to its rapidly expanding range of new GO-based environmental technologies. Therefore, the fate of GO in aquatic environments is an important issue, as it could become an environmental challenge if its potential toxic mechanism is not addressed properly. Number of studies reporting the toxicity of GO to various aquatic organisms is still increasing. However, research data on the possible toxic mechanism of GO towards aquatic plants have yet to be collected, especially regarding GO's surface chemistry. Here, we studied the interaction of three differently oxidized GO systems with model aquatic plant Lemna minor. We found that although none of the three GOs caused lethal phytotoxicity to Lemna after 7 days, the mechanism of action was dependent on the GO's surface oxidation. Based on the amount of functional surface groups, the GO was able to directly interact with the Lemna's root through its edges. However, in this case in contrast to algae and crustaceans, the interaction did not lead to a mechanical damage. Therefore, our results showed that GO is not hazardous to Lemna minor even at very high concentrations (up to 25 mg/L), because the root barrier proved to be strong enough to prevent GO's penetration and its consequent toxicity.

Carbon Nanotube Based Metal-Organic Framework Hybrids From Fundamentals Toward Applications

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) materials constructed by the coordination chemistry of metal ions and organic ligands are important members of the crystalline materials family. Owing to their exceptional properties, for example, high porosity, tunable pore size, and large surface area, MOFs have been applied in several fields such as gas or liquid adsorbents, sensors, batteries, and supercapacitors. However, poor conductivity and low stability hamper their potential applications in several attractive fields such as energy and gas storage. The integration of MOFs with carbon nanotubes (CNTs), a well-established carbon allotrope that exhibits high conductivity and stability, has been proposed as an efficient strategy to overcome such limitations. By combining the advantages of MOFs and CNTs, a wide variety of composites can be prepared with properties superior to their parent materials. This review provides a comprehensive summary of the preparation of CNT@MOF composites and focuses on their recent applications in several important fields, such as water purification, gas storage and separation, sensing, electrocatalysis, and energy storage (supercapacitors and batteries). Future challenges and prospects for CNT@MOF composites are also discussed.

Silica-supported Fe/Fe–O nanoparticles for the catalytic hydrogenation of nitriles to amines in the presence of aluminium additives

The hydrogenation of nitriles to amines represents an important and frequently used industrial process due to the broad applicability of the resulting products in chemistry and life sciences. Despite the existing portfolio of catalysts reported for the hydrogenation of nitriles, the development of iron-based heterogeneous catalysts for this process is still a challenge. Here, we show that the impregnation and pyrolysis of iron(II) acetate on commercial silica produces a reusable Fe/Fe–O@SiO2 catalyst with a well-defined structure comprising the fayalite phase at the Si–Fe interface and α-Fe nanoparticles, covered by an ultrathin amorphous iron(III) oxide layer, growing from the silica matrix. These Fe/Fe–O core–shell nanoparticles, in the presence of catalytic amounts of aluminium additives, promote the hydrogenation of all kinds of nitriles, including structurally challenging and functionally diverse aromatic, heterocyclic, aliphatic and fatty nitriles, to produce primary amines under scalable and industrially viable conditions.

Emerging MXene@Metal-Organic Framework Hybrids: Design Strategies toward Versatile Applications

Rapid progress on developing smart materials and design of hybrids is motivated by pressing challenges associated with energy crisis and environmental remediation. While emergence of versatile classes of nanomaterials has been fascinating, the real excitement lies in the design of hybrid materials with tunable properties. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are the key materials for gas sorption and electrochemical applications, but their sustainability is challenged by limited chemical stability, poor electrical conductivity, and intricate, inaccessible pores. Despite tremendous efforts towards improving the stability of MOF materials, little progress has made researchers inclined toward developing hybrid materials. MXenes, a family of two-dimensional transition-metal carbides, nitrides and carbonitrides, are known for their compositional versatility and formation of a range of structures with rich surface chemistry. Hybridization of MOFs with functional layered MXene materials may be beneficial if the host structure provides appropriate interactions for stabilizing and improving the desired properties. Recent efforts have focused on integrating Ti₃C₂T_x and V₂CT_x MXenes with MOFs to result in hybrid materials with augmented electrochemical and physicochemical properties, widening the scope for emerging applications. This review discusses the potential design strategies of MXene@MOF hybrids, attributes of tunable properties in the resulting hybrids, and their applications in water treatment, sensing, electrochemical energy storage, smart textiles, and electrocatalysis. Comprehensive discussions on the recent efforts on rapidly evolving MXene@MOF materials for various applications and potential future directions are highlighted.

Reusable Co-nanoparticles for general and selective N-alkylation of amines and ammonia with alcohols

A general cobalt-catalyzed N-alkylation of amines with alcohols by borrowing hydrogen methodology to prepare different kinds of amines is reported. The optimal catalyst for this transformation is prepared by pyrolysis of a specific templated material, which is generated in situ by mixing cobalt salts, nitrogen ligands and colloidal silica, and subsequent removal of silica. Applying this novel Co-nanoparticle-based material, >100 primary, secondary, and tertiary amines including N-methylamines and selected drug molecules were conveniently prepared starting from inexpensive and easily accessible alcohols and amines or ammonia.

Rational Design of Graphene Derivatives for Electrochemical Reduction of Nitrogen to Ammonia

The conversion of nitrogen to ammonia offers a sustainable and environmentally friendly approach for producing precursors for fertilizers and efficient energy carriers. Owing to the large energy density and significant gravimetric hydrogen content, NH₃ is considered an apt next-generation energy carrier and liquid fuel. However, the low conversion efficiency and slow production of ammonia through the nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) are currently bottlenecks, making it an unviable alternative to the traditional Haber-Bosch process for ammonia production. The rational design and engineering of catalysts (both photo- and electro-) represent a crucial challenge for improving the efficiency and exploiting the full capability of the NRR. In the present review, we highlight recent progress in the development of graphene-based systems and graphene derivatives as catalysts for the NRR. Initially, the history, fundamental mechanism, and importance of the NRR to produce ammonia are briefly discussed. We also outline how surface functionalization, defects, and hybrid structures (single-atom/multiatom as well as composites) affect the N₂ conversion efficiency. The potential of graphene and graphene derivatives as NRR catalysts is highlighted using pertinent examples from theoretical simulations as well as machine learning based performance predictive methods. The review is concluded by identifying the crucial advantages, drawbacks, and challenges associated with principal scientific and technological breakthroughs in ambient catalytic NRR.

Single-Atom (Iron-Based) Catalysts: Synthesis and Applications

Supported single-metal atom catalysts (SACs) are constituted of isolated active metal centers, which are heterogenized on inert supports such as graphene, porous carbon, and metal oxides. Their thermal stability, electronic properties, and catalytic activities can be controlled via interactions between the single-metal atom center and neighboring heteroatoms such as nitrogen, oxygen, and sulfur. Due to the atomic dispersion of the active catalytic centers, the amount of metal required for catalysis can be decreased, thus offering new possibilities to control the selectivity of a given transformation as well as to improve catalyst turnover frequencies and turnover numbers. This review aims to comprehensively summarize the synthesis of Fe-SACs with a focus on anchoring single atoms (SA) on carbon/graphene supports. The characterization of these advanced materials using various spectroscopic techniques and their applications in diverse research areas are described. When applicable, mechanistic investigations conducted to understand the specific behavior of Fe-SACs-based catalysts are highlighted, including the use of theoretical models.

Silver nanomaterials: synthesis and (electro/photo) catalytic applications

In view of their unique characteristics and properties, silver nanomaterials (Ag NMs) have been used not only in the field of nanomedicine but also for diverse advanced catalytic technologies. In this comprehensive review, light is shed on general synthetic approaches encompassing chemical reduction, sonochemical, microwave, and thermal treatment among the preparative methods for the syntheses of Ag-based NMs and their catalytic applications. Additionally, some of the latest innovative approaches such as continuous flow integrated with MW and other benign approaches have been emphasized that ultimately pave the way for sustainability. Moreover, the potential applications of emerging Ag NMs, including sub nanomaterials and single atoms, in the field of liquid-phase catalysis, photocatalysis, and electrocatalysis as well as a positive role of Ag NMs in catalytic reactions are meticulously summarized. The scientific interest in the synthesis and applications of Ag NMs lies in the integrated benefits of their catalytic activity, selectivity, stability, and recovery. Therefore, the rise and journey of Ag NM-based catalysts will inspire a new generation of chemists to tailor and design robust catalysts that can effectively tackle major environmental challenges and help to replace noble metals in advanced catalytic applications. This overview concludes by providing future perspectives on the research into Ag NMs in the arena of electrocatalysis and photocatalysis.

Graphene with Covalently Grafted Amino Acid as a Route Toward Eco-Friendly and Sustainable Supercapacitors

Eco-friendly, electrochemically active electrode materials based on covalent graphene derivatives offer enormous potential for energy storage applications. However, covalent grafting of functional groups onto the graphene surface is challenging due to its low reactivity. Here, fluorographene chemistry was employed to graft an arginine moiety via its guanidine group homogeneously on both sides of graphene. By tuning the reaction conditions and adding a non-toxic pore-forming agent, an optimum degree of functionalization and hierarchical porosity was achieved in the material. This tripled the specific surface area and yielded a high capacitance value of approximately 390 F g-1 at a current density of 0.25 A g-1 . The applicability of the electrode material was investigated under typical operating conditions by testing an assembled supercapacitor device for up to 30000 charging/discharging cycles, revealing capacitance retention of 82.3 %. This work enables the preparation of graphene derivatives with covalently grafted amino acids for technologically important applications, such as supercapacitor-based energy storage.

Nanometallurgy in solution: organometallic synthesis of intermetallic Pd-Ga colloids and their activity in semi-hydrogenation catalysis

Nanoparticles (NPs) of Pd_1--xGa_x (x = 0.67, 0.5, 0.33), stabilized in non-aqueous colloidal solution, were obtained via an organometallic approach under mild conditions using [Pd₂(dvds)₃] and GaCp* as all-hydrocarbon ligated metal-precursor compounds (dvds = 1,1,3,3-tetramethyl-1,3-divinyl-disiloxane; Cp* = η⁵-C₅Me₅; Me = CH₃). The reaction of the two precursors involves the formation of a library of molecular clusters [Pd_nGa_mCp*_y(dvds)_z], as shown by liquid injection field desorption ionization mass spectrometry (LIFDI-MS). Full characterization of the catalytic system (HR-TEM, EDX, DLS, PXRD, XPS, NMR, IR, Raman) confirmed the formation of ultra-small, spherical NPs with narrow size distributions ranging from 1.2 ± 0.2 nm to 2.1 ± 0.4 nm (depending on the Pd : Ga ratio). The catalytic performance of the Pd_1--xGa_x NPs in the semi-hydrogenation of terminal and internal alkynes and the influence of the gallium content on product selectivity were investigated. The highest activities (65%) and selectivities (81%) are achieved using colloids with a "stoichiometric" Pd/Ga ratio of 1 : 1 at 0 °C and 2.0 bar H₂ pressure. While lower Ga ratios lead to an increase in activity, higher Ga contents increase the olefin selectivity but are detrimental to the activity.

Addition Reaction between Piperidine and C60 to Form 1,4-Disubstituted C60 Proceeds through van der Waals and Dative Bond Complexes: Theoretical and Experimental Study

A combined computational and experimental study reveals the character of the C₆₀ complexes with piperidine formed under different reaction conditions. The IR and NMR experiments detect the dative bond complex, which according to NMR, is stable in the oxygen-free environment and transforms to the adduct complex in the presence of O₂. Computational studies on the character of reaction channels rationalize the experimental observations. They show that the piperidine dimer rather than a single piperidine molecule is required for the complex formation. The calculations reveal significant differences in the dative bond and adduct complexes' character, suggesting a considerable versatility in their electronic properties modulated by the environment. This capability offers new application potential in several fields, such as in energy storage devices.

Silver Covalently Bound to Cyanographene Overcomes Bacterial Resistance to Silver Nanoparticles and Antibiotics

The ability of bacteria to develop resistance to antibiotics is threatening one of the pillars of modern medicine. It was recently understood that bacteria can develop resistance even to silver nanoparticles by starting to produce flagellin, a protein which induces their aggregation and deactivation. This study shows that silver covalently bound to cyanographene (GCN/Ag) kills silver-nanoparticle-resistant bacteria at concentrations 30 times lower than silver nanoparticles, a challenge which has been so far unmet. Tested also against multidrug resistant strains, the antibacterial activity of GCN/Ag is systematically found as potent as that of free ionic silver or 10 nm colloidal silver nanoparticles. Owing to the strong and multiple dative bonds between the nitrile groups of cyanographene and silver, as theory and experiments confirm, there is marginal silver ion leaching, even after six months of storage, and thus very high cytocompatibility to human cells. Molecular dynamics simulations suggest strong interaction of GCN/Ag with the bacterial membrane, and as corroborated by experiments, the antibacterial activity does not rely on the release of silver nanoparticles or ions. Endowed with these properties, GCN/Ag shows that rigid supports selectively and densely functionalized with potent silver-binding ligands, such as cyanographene, may open new avenues against microbial resistance.

Carbon Dots Detect Water-to-Ice Phase Transition and Act as Alcohol Sensors via Fluorescence Turn-Off/On Mechanism

Highly fluorescent carbon nanoparticles called carbon dots (CDs) have been the focus of intense research due to their simple chemical synthesis, nontoxic nature, and broad application potential including optoelectronics, photocatalysis, biomedicine, and energy-related technologies. Although a detailed elucidation of the mechanism of their photoluminescence (PL) remains an unmet challenge, the CDs exhibit robust, reproducible, and environment-sensitive PL signals, enabling us to monitor selected chemical phenomena including phase transitions or detection of ultralow concentrations of molecular species in solution. Herein, we report the PL turn-off/on behavior of aqueous CDs allowing the reversible monitoring of the water-ice phase transition. The bright PL attributable to molecular fluorophores present on the CD surface was quenched by changing the liquid aqueous environment to solid phase (ice). Based on light-induced electron paramagnetic resonance (LEPR) measurements and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the proposed kinetic model assuming the presence of charge-separated trap states rationalized the observed sensitivity of PL lifetimes to the environment. Importantly, the PL quenching induced by freezing could be suppressed by adding a small amount of alcohols. This was attributed to a high tendency of alcohol to increase its concentration at the CD/solvent interface, as revealed by all-atom molecular dynamics simulations. Based on this behavior, a fluorescence "turn-on" alcohol sensor for exhaled breath condensate (EBC) analysis has been developed. This provided an easy method to detect alcohols among other common interferents in EBC with a low detection limit (100 ppm), which has a potential to become an inexpensive and noninvasive clinically useful diagnostic tool for early stage lung cancer screening.

Spatially Confined Formation of Single Atoms in Highly Porous Carbon Nitride Nanoreactors

Reducing the size of a catalyst to a single atom (SA) level can dramatically change its physicochemical properties and significantly boost its catalytic activity. However, the massive synthesis of SA catalysts still remains a grand challenge mainly because of the aggregation and nucleation of the generated atoms during the reaction. Here, we design and implement a spatially confined synthetic strategy based on a porous-hollow carbon nitride (p-CN) coordinated with 1-butyl-3-methylimidazole hexafluorophosphate, which can act as a nanoreactor and allow us to obtain metal SA catalysts (p-CN@M SAs). This relatively easy and highly effective method provides a way to massively synthesize single/multiple atoms (p-CN@M SAs, M = Pt, Pd, Cu, Fe, etc.). Moreover, the amorphous NiB-coated p-CN@Pt SAs can further increase the loading amount of Pt SAs to 3.7 wt %. The synthesized p-CN@Pt&NiB electrocatalyst exhibits an extraordinary hydrogen evolution reaction activity with the overpotential of 40.6 mV@10 mA/cm^-2 and the Tofel slope of 29.26 mV/dec.

Single-Atom Catalysts: A Sustainable Pathway for the Advanced Catalytic Applications

A heterogeneous catalyst is a backbone of modern sustainable green industries; and understanding the relationship between its structure and properties is the key for its advancement. Recently, many upscaling synthesis strategies for the development of a variety of respectable control atomically precise heterogeneous catalysts are reported and explored for various important applications in catalysis for energy and environmental remediation. Precise atomic-scale control of catalysts has allowed to significantly increase activity, selectivity, and in some cases stability. This approach has proved to be relevant in various energy and environmental related technologies such as fuel cell, chemical reactors for organic synthesis, and environmental remediation. Therefore, this review aims to critically analyze the recent progress on single-atom catalysts (SACs) application in oxygen reduction reaction, oxygen evolution reaction, hydrogen evolution reaction, and chemical and/or electrochemical organic transformations. Finally, opportunities that may open up in the future are summarized, along with suggesting new applications for possible exploitation of SACs.

Carbon Nitride-Based Ruthenium Single Atom Photocatalyst for CO2 Reduction to Methanol

With increasing concerns for global warming, the solar-driven photocatalytic reduction of CO₂ into chemical fuels like methanol is a propitious route to enrich energy supplies, with concomitant reduction of the abundant CO₂  stockpiles. Herein, a novel single atom-confinement and a strategy are reported toward single ruthenium atoms dispersion over porous carbon nitride surface. Ruthenium single atom character is well confirmed by EXAFS absorption spectrometric analysis unveiling the cationic coordination environment for the single-atomic-site ruthenium center, that is formed by Ru-N/C intercalation in the first coordination shell, attaining synergism in N-Ru-N connection and interfacial carrier transfer. From time resolved fluorescence decay spectra, the average carrier lifetime of the RuSA-mC₃ N₄ system is found to be higher compared to m-C₃ N₄ ; the fact uncovering the crucial role of single Ru atoms in promoting photocatalytic reaction system. A high yield of methanol (1500 µmol g^-1 cat. after 6 h of the reaction) using water as an electron donor and the reusability of the developed catalyst without any significant change in the efficiency represent the superior aspects for its potential application in real industrial technologies.

Single Co-Atoms as Electrocatalysts for Efficient Hydrazine Oxidation Reaction

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) have aroused great attention due to their high atom efficiency and unprecedented catalytic properties. A remaining challenge is to anchor the single atoms individually on support materials via strong interactions. Herein, single atom Co sites have been developed on functionalized graphene by taking advantage of the strong interaction between Co²⁺ ions and the nitrile group of cyanographene. The potential of the material, which is named G(CN)Co, as a SAC is demonstrated using the electrocatalytic hydrazine oxidation reaction (HzOR). The material exhibits excellent catalytic activity for HzOR, driving the reaction with low overpotential and high current density while remaining stable during long reaction times. Thus, this material can be a promising alternative to conventional noble metal-based catalysts that are currently widely used in HzOR-based fuel cells. Density functional theory calculations of the reaction mechanism over the material reveal that the Co(II) sites on G(CN)Co can efficiently interact with hydrazine molecules and promote the NH bond-dissociation steps involved in the HzOR.

Structure-directed formation of the dative/covalent bonds in complexes with C70piperidine

The combined experimental-computational study has been performed to investigate the complexes formed between C70 carbon allotrope and piperidine. The results of FT-IR, H-NMR, and C-NMR measurements, together with the calculations based on the DFT approach and molecular dynamics simulations, prove the existence of dative/covalent bonding in C70piperidine complexes. The dative bond forms not only at the region of five- and six-membered rings, observed previously with C60, but also at the region formed of six-membered rings. The structure, i.e., nonplanarity, explains the observed dative bond formation. New findings on the character of interaction of secondary amines with C70 bring new aspects for the rational design of modified fullerenes and their applications in electrocatalysis, spintronics, and energy storage.

Carboxylated Graphene for Radical-Assisted Ultra-Trace-Level Water Treatment and Noble Metal Recovery

Sorption technologies, enabling removal of heavy metals, play a pivotal role in meeting the global demands for unrestricted access to drinking water. Standard sorption technologies suffer from limited efficiency related to the weak sorbent-metal interaction. Further challenges include the development of technologies enabling smart metal recovery and sorbent regeneration. To this end, a densely functionalized graphene, with 33% by mass content of carboxyl groups, linked through direct C-C bonds (graphene acid, GA) represents a previously unexplored solution to this challenge. GA revealed excellent efficiency for removal of highly toxic metals, such as Cd²⁺ and Pb²⁺. Due to its selective chemistry, GA can bind heavy metals with high affinity, even at concentrations of 1 mg L^-1 and in the presence of competing ions of natural drinking water, and reduce them down to drinking water allowance levels of a few μg L^-1. This is not only due to carboxyl groups but also due to the stable radical centers of the GA structure, enabling metal ion-radical interactions, as proved by EPR, XPS, and density functional theory calculations. GA offers full structural integrity during the highly acidic and basic treatment, which is exploited for noble metal recovery (Ga³⁺, In³⁺, Pd²⁺) and sorbent regeneration. Owing to these attributes, GA represents a fully reusable metal sorbent, applicable also in electrochemical energy technologies, as illustrated with a GA/Pt catalyst derived from Pt⁴⁺-contaminated water.

Covalent Graphene-MOF Hybrids for High-Performance Asymmetric Supercapacitors

In this work, the covalent attachment of an amine functionalized metal-organic framework (UiO-66-NH₂  = Zr₆ O₄ (OH)₄ (bdc-NH₂ )₆ ; bdc-NH₂  = 2-amino-1,4-benzenedicarboxylate) (UiO-Universitetet i Oslo) to the basal-plane of carboxylate functionalized graphene (graphene acid = GA) via amide bonds is reported. The resultant GA@UiO-66-NH₂ hybrid displayed a large specific surface area, hierarchical pores and an interconnected conductive network. The electrochemical characterizations demonstrated that the hybrid GA@UiO-66-NH₂ acts as an effective charge storing material with a capacitance of up to 651 F g^-1 , significantly higher than traditional graphene-based materials. The results suggest that the amide linkage plays a key role in the formation of a π-conjugated structure, which facilitates charge transfer and consequently offers good capacitance and cycling stability. Furthermore, to realize the practical feasibility, an asymmetric supercapacitor using a GA@UiO-66-NH₂ positive electrode with Ti₃ C₂ T_X MXene as the opposing electrode has been constructed. The cell is able to deliver a power density of up to 16 kW kg^-1 and an energy density of up to 73 Wh kg^-1 , which are comparable to several commercial devices such as Pb-acid and Ni/MH batteries. Under an intermediate level of loading, the device retained 88% of its initial capacitance after 10 000 cycles.

Dual-Function HKUST-1: Templating and Catalyzing Formation of Graphitic Carbon Nitride Quantum Dots Under Mild Conditions

Graphitic carbon nitride quantum dots (g-CNQDs) are highly promising photoresponsive materials. However, synthesis of monodispersed g-CNQDs remains challenging. Here we report the dual function of MOF [Cu3 BTC2 ] (HKUST-1) as a catalyst and template simultaneously to prepare g-CNQDs under mild conditions. Cyanamide (CA), a graphitic carbon nitride precursor, catalytically dimerized inside the larger MOF cavities at 90 °C and condensed into g-CNQDs at 120 °C in a controlled fashion. The HKUST-1 template was stable under the reaction conditions, leading to uniform g-CNQDs with a particle size of 2.22±0.68 nm. The as prepared g-CNQDs showed photoluminescence emission with a quantum yield of 3.1 %. This concept (MOF dual functionality) for catalyzing CA polycondensation (open metal sites (OMSs) effect) and controlling the produced particle size (pore-templating effect), together with the tunable MOF porosity, is expected to produce unique g-CNQDs with controllable size, morphology, and surface functionality.

The environmental fate of graphene oxide in aquatic environment-Complete mitigation of its acute toxicity to planktonic and benthic crustaceans by algae

Graphene oxide (GO) as the most studied hydrophilic graphene derivative can be deployed in a broad spectrum of environmental technologies opening the issue of its ecotoxicity. Nevertheless, the information about its behavior in complex aquatic environment is still not sufficient. Here, we studied the interaction of three differently oxidized GO systems with planktonic and benthic crustaceans. By standard toxicity tests, we observed the importance of feeding strategy as well as the surface oxidation of GO with respect to GO's ecotoxicity. However, to gain a clearer insight into GO's environmental fate, we introduced a pre-treatment with algae as the most common source of food for crustaceans. Such an adjustment mimicking the conditions in real aquatic ecosystems resulted in complete mitigation of acute toxicity of GOs to all organisms and, more importantly, to the eradication of oxidative stress caused by GOs. We argue, that the pre-exposition of food is a crucial factor in GO's overall environmental fate, even though this fact has been completely neglected in recent studies. These experiments proved that GO is not a hazardous material in complex aquatic environments because its acute toxicity can be successfully mitigated through the interaction with algae even at very high concentrations (25 mg/L).

Metal Halide Perovskite@Metal-Organic Framework Hybrids: Synthesis, Design, Properties, and Applications

Metal halide perovskites (MHPs) have excellent optoelectronic and photovoltaic applications because of their cost-effectiveness, tunable emission, high photoluminescence quantum yields, and excellent charge carrier properties. However, the potential applications of the entire MHP family are facing a major challenge arising from its weak resistance to moisture, polar solvents, temperature, and light exposure. A viable strategy to enhance the stability of MHPs could lie in their incorporation into a porous template. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have outstanding properties, with a unique network of ordered/functional pores, which render them promising for functioning as such a template, accommodating a wide range of MHPs to the nanosized region, alongside minimizing particle aggregation and enhancing the stability of the entrapped species. This review highlights recent advances in design strategies, synthesis, characterization, and properties of various hybrids of MOFs with MHPs. Particular attention is paid to a critical review of the emergence of MHP@MOF for comprehensive studies of next-generation materials for various technological applications including sensors, photocatalysis, encryption/decryption, light-emitting diodes, and solar cells. Finally, by summarizing the state-of-the-art, some promising future applications of reported hybrids are proposed. Considering the inherent correlation and synergic functionalities of MHPs and MOFs, further advancement; new functional materials; and applications can be achieved through designing MHP@MOF hybrids.

Human virus detection with graphene-based materials

Our recent experience of the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of easy-to-use, quick, cheap, sensitive and selective detection of virus pathogens for the efficient monitoring and treatment of virus diseases. Early detection of viruses provides essential information about possible efficient and targeted treatments, prolongs the therapeutic window and hence reduces morbidity. Graphene is a lightweight, chemically stable and conductive material that can be successfully utilized for the detection of various virus strains. The sensitivity and selectivity of graphene can be enhanced by its functionalization or combination with other materials. Introducing suitable functional groups and/or counterparts in the hybrid structure enables tuning of the optical and electrical properties, which is particularly attractive for rapid and easy-to-use virus detection. In this review, we cover all the different types of graphene-based sensors available for virus detection, including, e.g., photoluminescence and colorimetric sensors, and surface plasmon resonance biosensors. Various strategies of electrochemical detection of viruses based on, e.g., DNA hybridization or antigen-antibody interactions, are also discussed. We summarize the current state-of-the-art applications of graphene-based systems for sensing a variety of viruses, e.g., SARS-CoV-2, influenza, dengue fever, hepatitis C virus, HIV, rotavirus and Zika virus. General principles, mechanisms of action, advantages and drawbacks are presented to provide useful information for the further development and construction of advanced virus biosensors. We highlight that the unique and tunable physicochemical properties of graphene-based nanomaterials make them ideal candidates for engineering and miniaturization of biosensors.

P- and F-co-doped Carbon Nitride Nanocatalysts for Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction and Thermocatalytic Furanics Synthesis from Sugars

A new P- and F-co-doped amorphous carbon nitride (PFCN) has been synthesized via sol-gel-mediated thermal condensation of dicyandiamide. Such synthesized P- and F-co-doped carbon nitride displayed a well-defined mesoporous nanostructure and enhanced visible light absorption region up to infrared with higher BET surface area of 260.93 m²  g^-1 ; the highest recorded value for phosphorus-doped carbon nitride materials. Moreover, the formation mechanism is delineated and the role of templates was found to be essential not only in increasing the surface area but also in facilitating the co-doping of P and F atoms. Co-doping helped to narrow the optical band gap to 1.8 eV, thus enabling an excellent photocatalytic activity for the aqueous reduction of carbon dioxide into methanol under visible-light irradiation, which is fifteen times higher (119.56 μmol g^-1  h^-1 ) than the bare carbon nitride. P doping introduced Brønsted acidity into the material, turning it into an acid-base bifunctional catalyst. Consequently, the material was also investigated for the thermal conversion of common carbohydrates into furanics.

Pressure-Modulated Broadband Emission in 2D Layered Hybrid Perovskite-Like Bromoplumbate

Two-dimensional (2D) layered hybrid bromoplumbate perovskites are promising candidates for solution-processed light-emitting materials. Here, we report the synthesis and characterization of two novel layered bromoplumbates: (4BrPhMA)₂PbBr₄ (1) and (4BrPhA)₆Pb₃Br₁₂ (2), where 4BrPhMA is (4-bromophenyl)methylammonium and 4BrPhA is (4-bromophenyl) ammonium. Despite similar optical absorption, these materials show remarkably different photoluminescence properties: 1 emits a narrow exciton band at ca. 395 nm with a very small bandwidth (particularly at low temperatures of 15-50 K) and Stokes shift, while 2 exhibits a broad emission at ca. 560 nm with a large Stokes shift, both at low and ambient temperatures. However, under several kbar of hydrostatic pressure, the broad emission diminishes and a new band reversibly develops at ca. 395 nm, similar to that in 1. Our results emphasize organic layer flexibility as an important design factor for this class of perovskite-like materials featuring broadband emission.
