Abstract
Sonochemical recovery of radioactive contaminants from nuclear graphite has been demonstrated to be quite invaluable in recent studies. However, graphite is a soft material and is prone to erosion and wear. This restricts the recycle of graphite cleaned using ultrasound beyond a few decontamination cycles. Hence, it is an imperative to prevent the surface erosion of graphite in the sonic field. The current work studies the efficacy of ultrasound in decontaminating ceria contaminated graphite coupons using a cocktail of acids (0.25 M HNO3 - 1 M HCOOH - 0.2 M [N2H5][NO3]). Based on the superlative effects of ionic liquids in lubrication and erosion prevention, the effect of adding ionic liquid stabilized Pd nanoparticles to the leachate was also studied. It was observed that the Trioctylmethyl ammonium chloride (TOMAC) ionic liquid prevented the generation of the carbon residue due to a protective viscous layer formation reducing the mechanical effects of cavitation on graphite surface. It also helped in maintaining the porosity change in graphite microstructure around 5% after 15 cycles of decontamination. TOMAC also proved to offer better surface protection on graphite compared to imidazolium-based ILs, based on the change in compressive strength and porosity in different ionic liquids. The palladium nanoparticles, on the other hand, helped in reductive dissolution of ceria layer by acting as a reducing agent due to its lower reduction potential compared to cerium. With the surge in demand of graphite worldwide, a non-destructive decontamination process for graphite with no secondary waste generation is the need of the hour. This study is an attempt in that direction.

Abstract
Flerovium (Fl, element 114) is the heaviest element chemically studied so far. To date, its interaction with gold was investigated in two gas-solid chromatography experiments, which reported two different types of interaction, however, each based on the level of a few registered atoms only. Whereas noble-gas-like properties were suggested from the first experiment, the second one pointed at a volatile-metal-like character. Here, we present further experimental data on adsorption studies of Fl on silicon oxide and gold surfaces, accounting for the inhomogeneous nature of the surface, as it was used in the experiment and analyzed as part of the reported studies. We confirm that Fl is highly volatile and the least reactive member of group 14. Our experimental observations suggest that Fl exhibits lower reactivity towards Au than the volatile metal Hg, but higher reactivity than the noble gas Rn.

Abstract
Use of nanomaterials to remove uranium by adsorption from nuclear wastewater is widely applied, though not much work is focused on the recovery of uranium from the sorbents. The present work reports the recovery of adsorbed uranium from the microstructures of silica nanoparticles (SiO2M) and its functionalized biohybrid (fBHM), synthesized with Streptococcus lactis cells and SiO2M, intensified using ultrasound. Effects of temperature, concentration of leachant (nitric acid), sonic intensity, and operating frequency on the recovery as well as kinetics of recovery were thoroughly studied. A comparison with the silent operation demonstrated five and two fold increase due to the use of ultrasound under optimum conditions in the dissolution from SiO2M and fBHM respectively. Results of the subsequent adsorption studies using both the sorbents after sonochemical desorption have also been presented with an aim of checking the efficacy of reusing the adsorbent back in wastewater treatment. The SiO2M and fBHM adsorbed 69% and 67% of uranium respectively in the second cycle. The adsorption capacity of fBHM was found to reduce from 92% in the first cycle to 67% due to loss of adsorption sites in the acid treatment. Recovery and reuse of both the nuclear material and the sorbent (with some make up or activation) would ensure an effective nuclear remediation technique, catering to UN's Sustainable Development Goals.

Abstract
Yttria coated graphite crucibles are widely used to handle molten refractory and radioactive metals like uranium and plutonium. However, the coated layer suffers damages like cracking and peeling off owing to thermal cycles. As a result, removal of the yttria layer from the graphite surface is essential to ensure reuse of the crucible and minimization of radioactive waste. The present work investigates intensified dissolution of yttria from the coated graphite samples using ultrasound as a non-destructive decontamination technique to recycle the graphite substrate. The optimum conditions established for maximum dissolution were 8 M as acid strength, frequency of 30 kHz, temperature of 45 °C and power density of 8 W cm-2 that resulted in maximum dissolution of 52% in 30 min. Use of an oxidant H2O2 to the acid, did not yield any improvement in the dissolution kinetics, instead, increased oxidation of the graphite substrate was observed, leading to the anomalous weight gain of the graphite substrate despite surface erosion. Effect of ultrasound on the dissolution was pronounced, with almost a threefold increase compared to dissolution performed under silent conditions. Rates of dissolution of yttria from the substrate of different densities and pore size distribution were also studied. The dissolution was slowest from graphite of density 1.82 g cm-3 as the pore size distribution was conducive to accommodate the yttria particles. The dissolution in nitric acid followed ash layer diffusion controlled kinetics. The study has demonstrated the efficacy of application of ultrasound for accelerated decontamination of graphite substrates.

Abstract
Natural motion types found in skeletal and muscular systems of vertebrate animals inspire researchers to transfer this ability into engineered motion, which is highly desired in robotic systems. Dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) have shown promising capabilities as artificial muscles for driving such structures, as they are soft, lightweight, and can generate large strokes. For maximum performance, dielectric elastomer membranes need to be sufficiently pre-stretched. This fact is challenging, because it is difficult to integrate pre-stretched membranes into entirely soft systems, since the stored strain energy can significantly deform soft elements. Here, we present a soft robotic structure, possessing a bioinspired skeleton integrated into a soft body element, driven by an antagonistic pair of DEA artificial muscles, that enable the robot bending. In its equilibrium state, the setup maintains optimum isotropic pre-stretch. The robot itself has a length of 60 mm and is based on a flexible silicone body, possessing embedded transverse 3D printed struts. These rigid bone-like elements lead to an anisotropic bending stiffness, which only allows bending in one plane while maintaining the DEA's necessary pre-stretch in the other planes. The bones, therefore, define the degrees of freedom and stabilize the system. The DEAs are manufactured by aerosol deposition of a carbon-silicone-composite ink onto a stretchable membrane that is heat cured. Afterwards, the actuators are bonded to the top and bottom of the silicone body. The robotic structure shows large and defined bimorph bending curvature and operates in static as well as dynamic motion. Our experiments describe the influence of membrane pre-stretch and varied stiffness of the silicone body on the static and dynamic bending displacement, resonance frequencies and blocking forces. We also present an analytical model based on the Classical Laminate Theory for the identification of the main influencing parameters. Due to the simple design and processing, our new concept of a bioinspired DEA based robotic structure, with skeletal and muscular reinforcement, offers a wide range of robotic application.

Abstract
In the field of phytohormone defense, the general perception is that salicylate (SA)-mediated defense is induced against biotrophic pathogens while jasmonate (JA)-mediated defense functions against necrotrophic pathogens. Our goals were to observe the behavior of the necrotrophic pathogen Rhizoctonia solani in the vicinity, on the surface, and within the host tissue after priming the host with SA or JA, and to see if priming with these phytohormones would affect the host defense differently upon infection. It was observed for the first time, that R. solani could not only distinguish between JA versus SA-primed tomato plants from a distance, but surprisingly avoided SA-primed plants more than JA-primed plants. To corroborate these findings, early infection events were monitored and compared through microscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy, and Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy using transformed R. solani expressing green fluorescence protein gene (gfp). Different histochemical and physiological parameters were compared between the unprimed control, JA-primed, and SA-primed plants after infection. The expression of a total of fifteen genes, including the appressoria-related gene of the pathogen and twelve marker genes functioning in the SA and JA signaling pathways, were monitored over a time course during early infection stages. R. solani being traditionally designated as a necrotroph, the major unexpected observations were that Salicylate priming offered better tolerance than Jasmonate priming and that it was mediated through the activation of SA-mediated defense during the initial phase of infection, followed by JA-mediated defense in the later phase. Hence, the present scenario of biphasic SA-JA defense cascades during R. solani infection, with SA priming imparting maximum tolerance, indicate a possible hemibiotrophic pathosystem that needs to be investigated further.

Abstract
A number of soybean varieties traditionally bred for resistance to various soybean arthropod pests have been identified as resistant to Megacopta cribraria (F.) (Hemiptera: Plataspidae). However, the mechanisms of host-plant resistance (HPR) in this system are not understood. The goal of this study was to identify the mechanisms of resistance by examining the role of plant volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and free amino acids (FAAs) among 16 soybean varieties. Choice and no-choice cage experiments identified several soybean varieties that demonstrated antixenosis as well as antibiosis. However, resistance varied over time in certain soybean varieties, such as N02-7002 and PI567352B. Mean nymph number from choice experiments had positive correlations with the FAAs asparagine, tryptophan, alanine, phenylanaline, and serine; negative correlation with leucine and threonine. Four plant volatiles, hexanal, 2-pentylfuran, beta-cyclocitral, and cis-9-hexadecenal, were positively correlated with subsequent nymph development, whereas n-hexadecenoic acid was negatively correlated with nymph number only, in adult choice cage experiments. This study contributes to understanding the mechanisms of HPR through associations with plant VOCs and FAAs in relation to M. cribraria development and provides useful knowledge for developing soybean varieties for M. cribraria management.

Abstract
Megacopta cribraria (F.) (Hemiptera: Plataspidae) is an invasive pest of soybean that has spread across the southeastern United States since its initial discovery in 2009 in Georgia. Previous studies in the southeastern states have documented both the population dynamics of this pest and host plant resistance (HPR) among soybean varieties, although the specific mechanisms of HPR remain unknown. The objectives of this study were, therefore, to 1) quantify field resistance to M. cribraria in multiple soybean varieties in two states previously affected by severe M. cribraria infestations, North Carolina (NC) and South Carolina (SC); and 2) study the role of soybean trichome density in imparting resistance against M. cribraria. Soybean variety 'Camp' was least attractive to M. cribraria, through time and locations, suggesting consistent resistance. Other varieties showed variable performance among the locations and sampling dates. A significant difference in trichome density was evident. However, there was no correlation between trichome density and M. cribraria infestation. Compared to a previously published study in the same location, when M. cribraria adults emerging from overwintering dispersed into soybeans, in our study only first-generation adults dispersed into soybeans. Considering the current trend of significantly lower M. cribraria infestation rates in North and South Carolina, this pest may be finally succumbing to indigenous natural enemies and should be managed by incorporating integrated pest management tactics, such as HPR, that help conserve natural enemy populations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Evaluation of the pathogenesis of clinical and environmental cryptococcal isolates to the central nervous system is necessary for understanding the risk. This study was designed to determine the in vitro expression of six important virulent genes of Cryptococcus neoformans/gattii in Human Brain Microvascular Endothelial cells (hBMEC). METHODS The hBMEC were infected with Cryptococcus to determine invasion and survival rate at 3, 12 and 24hours by subsequent colony count of internalized yeasts. The whole RNA of the intracellular Cryptococcus was extracted to quantify the expression of CAP10, PLB1, ENA1, URE1, LAC1, and MATα genes by real-time quantitative PCR for 3 and 12hours of infection. RESULTS Invasion and survival rates were higher in clinical and standard strains of C. neoformans. A significant difference was observed among the clinical and environmental isolates for the expression of CAP10, ENA1, LAC1, MATα and URE1 at 3hours, and ENA1, LAC1, MATα, PLB1 and URE1 at 12hours. Clinical isolates showed significant upregulation of all the genes except PLB1, which was higher in environmental isolates. Relative expressions at the two time-points showed statistically significant (P=0.043) changes for the clinical isolates and no significance (P=0.063) for environmental isolates. CONCLUSION The C. gattii (VGI) isolates showed significantly lower invasion and survival than C. neoformans (VNI, and VNII) irrespective of their sources. Clinical isolates exhibited higher expression for the majority of the virulent genes until 12hours of infection, probably due to their better adaptation in the host system and enhanced pathogenicity than the environmental counterparts.

Abstract
As part of an effort on scaling of pectoral spines and muscles, the basis for growth was examined in six pectoral muscles in juvenile blue catfish Ictalurus furcatus, the largest catfish in North America. Fibre number increases slowly in fish from 13.0 to 26.4 cm in total length, doubles by 27.0 cm and remains stable in larger individuals. Simultaneously, mean fibre diameter decreases by half, caused by the addition of new small fibres, before increasing non-linearly in larger fish. The orders of magnitude disparity between the size at hatching and the size of large adults may have selected for rapid muscle fibre addition at a threshold size.

Abstract
The superheavy element with atomic number Z=117 was produced as an evaporation residue in the (48)Ca+(249)Bk fusion reaction at the gas-filled recoil separator TASCA at GSI Darmstadt, Germany. The radioactive decay of evaporation residues and their α-decay products was studied using a detection setup that allowed measuring decays of single atomic nuclei with half-lives between sub-μs and a few days. Two decay chains comprising seven α decays and a spontaneous fission each were identified and are assigned to the isotope (294)117 and its decay products. A hitherto unknown α-decay branch in (270)Db (Z = 105) was observed, which populated the new isotope (266)Lr (Z = 103). The identification of the long-lived (T(1/2) = 1.0(-0.4)(+1.9) h) α-emitter (270)Db marks an important step towards the observation of even more long-lived nuclei of superheavy elements located on an "island of stability."

Abstract
PURPOSE Daidzein (Daid) has been implicated in bone health for its estrogen-'like' effects but low bioavailability, unfavorable metabolism and uterine estrogenicity impede its clinical potential. This study was aimed at assessing isoformononetin (Isoformo), a naturally occurring methoxydaidzein, for bone anabolic effect by overcoming the pitfalls associated with Daid. METHODS Sprague-Dawley ovariectomized (OVx) rats with established osteopenia were administered Isoformo, 17β-oestradiol (E2) or human parathyroid hormone. Efficacy was evaluated by bone microarchitecture using microcomputed tomography and determination of new bone formation by fluorescent labeling of bone. Osteoblast apoptosis was measured by co-labeling of bone sections with Runx-2 and TUNEL. Biochemical markers of bone metabolism were measured by ELISA. Plasma and bone marrow levels of Isoformo and Daid were determined by LC-MS-MS. Rat bone marrow stromal cells were harvested to study osteoblastic differentiation by Isoformo and Daid. New born rat pups were injected with Isoformo and Daid to study the effect of the compounds on the expression of osteogenic genes in the calvaria by real time PCR. RESULTS In osteopenic rats, Isoformo treatment restored trabecular microarchitecture, increased new bone formation, increased the serum osteogenic marker (procollagen N-terminal propeptide), decreased resorptive marker (urinary C-terminal teleopeptide of type I collagen) and diminished osteoblast apoptosis in bone. At the most effective osteogenic dose of Isoformo, plasma and bone marrow levels were comprised of ~90% Isoformo and the rest, Daid. Isoformo at the concentration reaching the bone marrow achieved out of its most effective oral dosing induced stromal cell mineralization and osteogenic gene expression in the calvaria of neonatal rats. Isoformo exhibited uterine safety. CONCLUSIONS Our study demonstrates that Isoformo reverses established osteopenia in adult OVx rats likely via its pro-survival effect on osteoblasts. Given its bone anabolic and anti-catabolic effects accompanied with safety at uterine level we propose its potential in the management of postmenopausal osteoporosis.

Abstract
In this paper we have tried to understand the nature of magnetism in ZnO nanoparticle samples with an intrinsic 50 ppm trace of Fe impurity. When the samples are annealed we observe formation of nanoparticle agglomerates and the size increases with annealing temperature. When the sample is annealed at 600 °C we observe superparamagnetic behaviour, and the magnetic hysteresis along with the coercive field below the blocking temperature is almost independent of the cooling field. When the sample is annealed at 900 °C we observe reduction of saturation magnetization but the magnetic hysteresis and the coercive field are now dependent on the cooling field, indicating magnetic correlation and ordering within the agglomerated nanograins. We propose a simple model that explains the reduction of magnetization as being due to a vortex-state-like flux closure formation.

Abstract
The fusion-evaporation reaction 244Pu(48Ca,3-4n){288,289}114 was studied at the new gas-filled recoil separator TASCA. Thirteen correlated decay chains were observed and assigned to the production and decay of {288,289}114. At a compound nucleus excitation energy of E{*}=39.8-43.9 MeV, the 4n evaporation channel cross section was 9.8{-3.1}{+3.9} pb. At E^{*}=36.1-39.5 MeV, that of the 3n evaporation channel was 8.0{-4.5}{+7.4} pb. In one of the 3n evaporation channel decay chains, a previously unobserved α branch in 281Ds was observed (probability to be of random origin from background: 0.1%). This α decay populated the new nucleus 277Hs, which decayed by spontaneous fission after a lifetime of 4.5 ms.

Abstract
Heavy ion irradiation on tantalum metal target with 57 MeV11B4+leads to the production of no-carrier-added radioisotopes of platinum,187,188Pt and iridium,187,188Ir in the matrix, which have been effectively separated from the bulk target and from each other with suitable anion exchangers employing liquid-liquid extraction (LLX). Also188,189Pt and188,189Ir radionuclides have been produced, from their short-lived precursors188,189Au, in12C6+irradiated tantalum matrix. Gamma-spectroscopy has been utilised to determine the production, extent of separation and purity of the radiotracers at different stages of the experiment.

A simple and rapid separation method of astatine is presented from the bulk target matrix bismuth by employing liquid-liquid extraction (LLX) method using methylisobutylketone (MIBK) and hydrochloric acid. Back extraction of astatine was performed by ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) solution at pH 10.

Abstract
Heavy ion activation of natural Sb2O3 with 78 MeV 16O6+ results in the formation of carrier-free praseodymium isotopes, 133,135Pr, and their corresponding decay products 133,135Ce, in the matrix. Also irradiation with ~ 90 MeV 19F7+ beam leads to the production of carrier-free neodymium isotopes, 135-138Nd, which decay out to 135-138Ce via 135-138Pr. Another way for the production of carrier-free 135Ce radionuclide is to irradiate CsNO3 target with 7Li3+ beam of energy 44 MeV. The shorter lived radionuclides of cerium decay out and a radiochemical procedure has been developed for the separation of carrier-free radionuclides from the bulk target matrix antimony and caesium through liquid-liquid extraction (LLX) using Aliquat 336 (tricaprylmethylammonium chloride), and di-(2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric acid (HDEHP) as extractants.

Summary
Charged particle activation of Al-foil with 46 MeV 7Li3+ beam results in the formation of no-carrier-added radionuclides 24Na and 28Mg in the matrix. Two popular extractants, namely, 18-Crown-6 ether and di-(2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric acids were used to separate no-carrier-added radionuclides. It was found that HDEHP is more efficient for separation of these two adjacent s-block elements in their no-carrier-added state.

Background: Overexpression of both HER2 and VEGF is associated with worse outcome than overexpression of either receptor alone. In preclinical models, combination anti-HER2 and anti-VEGF therapy has been shown to be more effective than either treatment alone. Bevacizumab (B) plus trastuzumab and lapatinib (L) plus pazopanib have shown activity in patients (pts) with HER2+ MBC. We evaluated the combination of L+B in a phase 2 trial in HER2+ MBC pts. To explore new biomarkers of treatment effect, we measured circulating tumor cells (CTCs) with two different methods of CTC enumeration: CellSearch (Veridex LLC), and immunomagnetic enrichment followed by flow cytometry (IE/FC), as well as circulating endothelial cells (CECs) in pts receiving study treatment.
 Methods: This study evaluated L (1500 mg PO daily) plus B (10 mg/kg IV q2wk) in 50 HER2+ MBC pts. The primary endpoint is crude progression-free survival (PFS) at 12 wks. Serial evaluation of CTC and CEC was performed. Blood was obtained from consenting pts at baseline, weeks 2, 6 then every 12 weeks until end of study. CellSearch assay was performed as previously described using 7.5 cc blood in a CellSave tube and the CellSpotter analyzer. For IE/FC, 20 ml of blood was subjected to IE using anti-EpCAM ferrofluid, followed by FC for EpCAM, CD45, and nucleic acid content. CTC data were correlated with assay method and with best response. CECs were defined as CD34/31+, CD45-, or CD34/146+, CD45-, and were assayed by FC.
 Results: Enrollment to this study ended in March 2008 (n=52). Clinical data is presented at this meeting (Dickler et al). 47 patients have evaluable CTC and CEC data at baseline and/or first follow-up; 32 patients have response data. CTC determined by CellSearch or IE/FC showed significant correlation at baseline (R=0.58; P=0.012). CTC by CellSearch at first followup correlated with treatment response (P=0.01) with levels above 5 CTC/sample associated with progression; there was no correlation with baseline values. There were too few positive IE/FC values to evaluate correlation with outcome. The change in CEC/CD146 from baseline to first followup for is of borderline significance in this preliminary analysis (P=0.07) between PR (N=2, Mean Change Score/MCS=-4.345) and SD/PD (N=18, MCS=0.8); a decrease of CEC/CD146 from baseline to first followup suggests greater likelihood of response.
 Conclusions: L+B is an active regimen in pts with MBC. CTC measurements correlated between two separate methodologies, and for the CellSearch assay predicted response to therapy. A decrease in CEC from baseline to first followup correlated with response to this combined targeted therapy, consistent with our previous results with other B-based therapy. PFS and response correlations for the full study cohort will be presented.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE Pigmentation and keratosis are the prerequisites to diagnose arsenicosis. However, many systemic manifestations occur in association with pigmentation and keratosis in people exposed to chronic drinking of arsenic contaminated water. The present study aim to find out whether systemic manifestations occur in significant number of cases in arsenic exposed people in the absence of skin lesions in an affected district in West Bengal, India. METHODS A cross-sectional study was carried out in South 24 Parganas, an arsenic affected district of West Bengal, India. Both dermatological and systemic manifestations were recorded and water samples collected for arsenic analysis from 7683 participants. A correlation of systemic manifestations in relation to arsenic exposure was carried out in subjects having no arsenical skin lesion. Prevalence odds ratio (POR) was calculated for each outcome comparing those with high arsenic exposure with those with lowest exposure. RESULTS The frequency of occurrence of various clinical manifestations like weakness, anaemia, diarrhoea, hepatomegaly and lung disease was found to be significantly higher among participants drinking water having arsenic concentration > or = 50 microg/l in comparison to those taking water with arsenic content below this level. Further, there was increased occurrence of these manifestations with increasing concentration of arsenic level in drinking water, and this followed a dose-response relationship. INTERPRETATION & CONCLUSION It appears that it is worthwhile to include people with systemic manifestations in absence of skin lesions with evidence of arsenic exposure as suspected cases of arsenicosis for case detection and in surveillance programme.

Incidence rates have long been used to assess the burden of different diseases in a population, whereas loss due to occurrence of diseases is studied using the death rates. Death rates however, are based on and therefore describe, only number of lives lost. There have been two approaches to arrive at the actual loss or gain from a particular cause viz. Person years of life lost (PYLL) approach and cause elimination life table (CELT) approach. This review covers these approaches and the competing risk theory and models focusing on the methodological developments. A summary of the conceptual and methodological developments on these concepts has also been presented. There are eight possible approaches in dealing with the loss in the presence or gain in the absence of a particular cause of death depending upon the preferences related to PYLL/CELT approach, modeling/descriptive approach, considering or without considering competing causes. A close look at the two basic approaches reveals that PYLL and cause elimination are just different terminologies used to address the same quantity, loss in the presence or gain in the absence. As far as descriptive vs. modeling approaches are concerned, all the descriptive procedures can be put in the form of models and all the models can be presented in a descriptive way. Regarding results using different models, no practical difference exists in the results based on different models for competing risks. However, exclusion of the competing risks may result in a considerable bias in the developing countries where general mortality is relatively higher. This review study suggests freedom in the selection of a modeling or a descriptive approach without any considerable loss of accuracy but at the same time emphasizes the consideration of the competing risks. An empirical study may be recommended to confirm the conclusions of this study.

Abstract
With classical approaches, survival refers to the life of a person after diagnosis of disease, and survival studies deal with measurement of the same to evaluate overall performance of a group of patients in terms of quality and quantity of life after diagnosis/treatment. There are numerous difficulties in the conduct of a population-based survival study in the context of developing countries, including India. Loss to follow-up is a typical problem encountered, causing biased estimates. In view of this difficulty with the classical approach, the objective of this study was to propose an indirect methodology for the study of survival. The proposed methodology is based on life table techniques and uses current data on incidence and mortality from the disease. It involves the estimation of person years free of disease (PYFD), person years with disease (PYWD), person years of life lost (PYLL) and average duration of disease (ADD) and their comparison over a time period. Empirical application was carried out for mouth and lung cancers in males and cancers of breast and cervix in females as well as for all sites combined together in each sex. Cancer incidence and mortality data by age and sex for the years 1989, 1993, 1997 and 2001 were obtained from published reports of Mumbai Cancer Registry, India. All causes of deaths for these years were obtained from Mumbai Municipal Corporation. Three life tables were constructed by applying various attrition factors: (a) risk of death from all causes; (b) risk of incidence and that of death from other causes; and (c) risk of death from other causes only. The expectation of life from the second life table gave PYFD. PYWD and PYLL were calculated by suitable subtractions among three expectations of life. ADD was calculated by dividing person years lived with disease by number developing the disease. It was noted that during 1993-2001, PYFD for all sites increased from 59.4 to 62.1 and from 63.8 to 66 years in males and females respectively. PYLL was about 0.8 year in males and 1 year in females. Similarly, PYWD was 0.6 and 1 year in males and females. ADD for all sites varied from 4 to 4.7 years in both sexes. It was about 6 years for mouth cancers and 2 years for lung cancers in males and 4-5 years for breast and cervical cancers in females. Validation of the ADD was carried out by comparison with published data for calculating median duration of disease. Given the difficulties in conduct of classical survival studies, the proposed method may provide a useful tool for having a regular audit of prognostic factors in the community.

Abstract
The relationships between the chemosensory discharge and glomus cells HIF-1alpha (hypoxia inducible factor 1alpha) in the rat carotid body in vitro were investigated using CO as a tool. Both chemosensory discharge and HIF-1alpha were stimulated by CO, although the former took only a few seconds and the latter a few minutes to develop. These developments were suppressed by light. By using the monochromatic lights, the action spectra were prepared. Lights of 430 nm 590 nm were most effective in suppressing the responses. It is known that these lights are the signature markers for cytochrome oxidase, making identification of the entities. Thus, cytochrome oxidase serves as a common oxygen sensor for both.

Abstract
Sphingolipids and glycosphingolipids are emerging as major players in many facets of cell physiology and pathophysiology. We now present an overview of sphingolipid biochemistry and physiology, followed by a brief presentation of recent advances in translational research related to sphingolipids. In discussing sphingolipid biochemistry, we focus on the structure of sphingolipids, and their biosynthetic pathways--the recent identification of most of the enzymes in this pathway has led to significant advances and better characterization of a number of the biosynthetic steps, and the relationship between them. We then discuss some roles of sphingolipids in cell physiology, particularly those of ceramide and sphingosine-1-phosphate, and mention current views about how these lipids act in signal transduction pathways. We end with a discussion of sphingolipids and glycosphingolipids in the etiology and pathology of a number of diseases, such as cancer, immunity, cystic fibrosis, emphysema, diabetes, and sepsis, areas in which sphingolipids are beginning to take a central position, even though many of the details remain to be elucidated.

Abstract
Electron paramagnetic resonance studies at multiple frequencies (MF EPR) can provide detailed electronic structure descriptions of unpaired electrons in organic radicals, inorganic complexes, and metalloenzymes. Analysis of these properties aids in the assignment of the chemical environment surrounding the paramagnet and provides mechanistic insight into the chemical reactions in which these systems take part. Herein, we present results from pulsed EPR studies performed at three different frequencies (9, 31, and 130 GHz) on [Mn(II)(H(2)O)(6)](2+), Mn(II) adducts with the nucleotides ATP and GMP, and the Mn(II)-bound form of the hammerhead ribozyme (MnHH). Through line shape analysis and interpretation of the zero-field splitting values derived from successful simulations of the corresponding continuous-wave and field-swept echo-detected spectra, these data are used to exemplify the ability of the MF EPR approach in distinguishing the nature of the first ligand sphere. A survey of recent results from pulsed EPR, as well as pulsed electron-nuclear double resonance and electron spin echo envelope modulation spectroscopic studies applied to Mn(II)-dependent systems, is also presented.

Abstract
The carotid body is essential to detecting levels of oxygen in the blood and initiating the compensatory response. Increasing evidence suggests that the purines ATP and adenosine make a key contribution to this signaling by the carotid body. The glomus cells release ATP in response to hypoxia. This released ATP can stimulate P2X receptors on the carotid body to elevate intracellular Ca(2+) and to produce an excitatory response. This released ATP can be dephosphorylated to adenosine by a series of extracellular enzymes, which in turn can stimulate A(1), A(2A) and A(2B) adenosine receptors. Levels of extracellular adenosine can also be altered by membrane transporters. Endogenous adenosine stimulates these receptors to increase the ventilation rate and may modulate the catecholamine release from the carotid sinus nerve. Prolonged hypoxic challenge can alter the expression of purinergic receptors, suggesting a role in the adaptation. This review discusses evidence for a key role of ATP and adenosine in the hypoxic response of the carotid body, and emphasizes areas of new contributions likely to be important in the future.

This review is divided into three parts: (a) The primary site of oxygen sensing is the carotid body which instantaneously respond to hypoxia without involving new protein synthesis, and is historically known as the first oxygen sensor and is therefore placed in the first section (Lahiri, Roy, Baby and Hoshi). The carotid body senses oxygen in acute hypoxia, and produces appropriate responses such as increases in breathing, replenishing oxygen from air. How this oxygen is sensed at a relatively high level (arterial PO2 approximately 50 Torr) which would not be perceptible by other cells in the body, is a mystery. This response is seen in afferent nerves which are connected synaptically to type I or glomus cells of the carotid body. The major effect of oxygen sensing is the increase in cytosolic calcium, ultimately by influx from extracellular calcium whose concentration is 2 x 10(4) times greater. There are several contesting hypotheses for this response: one, the mitochondrial hypothesis which states that the electron transport from the substrate to oxygen through the respiratory chain is retarded as the oxygen pressure falls, and the mitochondrial membrane is depolarized leading to the calcium release from the complex of mitochondria-endoplasmic reticulum. This is followed by influx of calcium. Also, the inhibitors of the respiratory chain result in mitochondrial depolarization and calcium release. The other hypothesis (membrane model) states that K(+) channels are suppressed by hypoxia which depolarizes the membrane leading to calcium influx and cytosolic calcium increase. Evidence supports both the hypotheses. Hypoxia also inhibits prolyl hydroxylases which are present in all the cells. This inhibition results in membrane K(+) current suppression which is followed by cell depolarization. The theme of this section covers first what and where the oxygen sensors are; second, what are the effectors; third, what couples oxygen sensors and the effectors. (b) All oxygen consuming cells have a built-in mechanism, the transcription factor HIF-1, the discovery of which has led to the delineation of oxygen-regulated gene expression. This response to chronic hypoxia needs new protein synthesis, and the proteins of these genes mediate the adaptive physiological responses. HIF-1alpha, which is a part of HIF-1, has come to be known as master regulator for oxygen homeostasis, and is precisely regulated by the cellular oxygen concentration. Thus, the HIF-1 encompasses the chronic responses (gene expression in all cells of the body). The molecular biology of oxygen sensing is reviewed in this section (Semenza). (c) Once oxygen is sensed and Ca(2+) is released, the neurotransmittesr will be elaborated from the glomus cells of the carotid body. Currently it is believed that hypoxia facilitates release of one or more excitatory transmitters from glomus cells, which by depolarizing the nearby afferent terminals, leads to increases in the sensory discharge. The transmitters expressed in the carotid body can be classified into two major categories: conventional and unconventional. The conventional neurotransmitters include those stored in synaptic vesicles and mediate their action via activation of specific membrane bound receptors often coupled to G-proteins. Unconventional neurotransmitters are those that are not stored in synaptic vesicles, but spontaneously generated by enzymatic reactions and exert their biological responses either by interacting with cytosolic enzymes or by direct modifications of proteins. The gas molecules such as NO and CO belong to this latter category of neurotransmitters and have unique functions. Co-localization and co-release of neurotransmitters have also been described. Often interactions between excitatory and inhibitory messenger molecules also occur. Carotid body contains all kinds of transmitters, and an interplay between them must occur. But very little has come to be known as yet. Glimpses of these interactions are evident in the discussion in the last section (Prabhakar).
