153Sm-labeled Fe3O4@lapatinib nanoparticles as a potential therapeutic agent for breast cancer: synthesis, quality control, and in vivo evaluation

The present study introduces Fe3O4-coated lapatinib-labeled 153Sm nanoparticles (denoted as Fe3O4@lapatinib-153Sm) as a promising avenue for advancing breast cancer treatment. The radiolabeled nanoparticles combine various attributes, offering enhanced therapeutic precision. The integration of lapatinib confers therapeutic effects and targeted delivery. The inherent magnetic characteristics of Fe3O4 nanoparticles contribute to improved imaging contrast and targeted localization. Incorporating the gamma-emitting 153Sm isotope permits single-photon emission computed tomography imaging and radiation dose evaluation, while its beta-emitting nature ensures targeted cancer cell eradication. The synthesis of Fe3O4@lapatinib-153Sm was meticulously optimized by investigating the effects of parameters on radiolabeling efficiency. Physicochemical attributes were scrutinized using several analytical techniques. In-depth in vivo assessment evaluated the biocompatibility, toxicity, and biodistribution in a murine model, illuminating clinical utility. Optimal conditions (153SmCl3 concentration of 10 mCi mL-1, pH 7.4, a reaction time of 30 min, and a temperature of 25 °C) achieved >99% labeling efficiency and radiochemical purity. The TEM analysis indicated that the diameter of Fe3O4@lapatinib-153Sm nanoparticles ranged from 10 to 40 nm. Vibrating-sample magnetometry verified their superparamagnetic behaviour with a saturation magnetization of 41.4 emu g-1. The synthesized radiopharmaceutical exhibited high sterility and in vitro stability. Acute toxicity studies showed the mild effects of Fe3O4@lapatinib-153Sm at a dose of 20 mCi kg-1, with no observed mortality. Notably, lesions from Fe3O4@lapatinib-153Sm use recovered naturally over time. Radiation doses below 20 mCi kg-1 were recommended for clinical trials. The biodistribution study in BT474 xenograft mice revealed rapid clearance of Fe3O4@lapatinib-153Sm within 48 h. Significant accumulation occurred in the liver, spleen, and tumor tissue, while minimal accumulation was found in other tissues. Future steps involve studying biocorona formation and therapeutic efficacy on tumour models, refining its clinical potential.

Cu2O/Fe3O4/UiO-66 nanocomposite as an efficient fenton-like catalyst: Performance in organic pollutant degradation and influencing factors based machinelearning

The persistent presence of organic pollutants like dyes in water environment necessitates innovative approaches for efficient degradation. In this research, we developed an advanced hybrid catalyst by combining metal oxides (Cu2O, Fe3O4) with UiO-66, serving as a heterogeneous Fenton catalyst for for efficient RB19 breakdown in water with H2O2. The control factors to the catalytic behavior were also quantified by machine learning. Experimental results show that the catalytic performance was much better than its individual components (P < 0.05 & non-zero 95% C.I). The improved catalytic efficiency was linked to the occurrence of active metal centers (Fe, Cu, and Zr), with Cu(I) from Cu2O playing a crucial role in promoting increased production of HO•. Also, UiO-66 served as a catalyst support, attracting pollutants to the reaction center, while magnetic Fe3O4 aids catalyst recovery. The optimal experimental parameters for best performance were pH at 7, catalyst loading of 1.6 g/L, H2O2 strength of 0.16 M, and reaction temperature of 25 °C. The catalyst can be magnetically separated and regenerated after five recycling times without significantly reducing catalytic activity. The reaction time and pH were ranked as the most influencing factors on catalytic efficiency via Random Forest and SHapley Additive exPlanations models. The findings show that developed catalyst is a suitable candidate to remove dyes in water by Fenton heterogeneous reaction.

Electrochemical degradation of indigo carmine, P-nitrosodimethylaniline and clothianidin on a fabricated Ti/SnO2-Sb/Co-βPbO2 electrode: Roles of radicals, water matrices effects and performance

In this study, the kinetic degradation of several typical organic pollutants was performed on a synthetic electrode (Ti/SnO₂-Sb/Co-βPbO₂). The surface structure and the electrochemical properties of the prepared electrode were investigated, confirming the successful preparation of the electrode using an electrochemical deposition method. The outer layer (Co-βPbO₂) played an important role in reducing the resistance of the electrode and improving its degradation efficiency. The results showed that indigo carmine (IC), p-nitrosodimethylaniline (RNO), and clothianidin (CLO) were effectively degraded within 20 min of electrolysis. Their degradation in the electrochemical process followed the first-order kinetic model with the degradation rate constant of IC being higher than that of RNO and CLO. This was proved by the difference in the reactivity of the target pollutants toward oxidizing radicals (i.e., •OH, SO₄^•-, and Cl•). Their second-order rate constant towards radicals were in the range of 10⁹ - 10¹⁰ M^-1 s^-1 with the highest value being that for IC: k_·OH,IC = 15.1 × 10⁹ M^-1 s^-1 and [Formula: see text]  = 7.4 × 10⁹ M^-1 s^-1. The study calculated the contribution of some oxidizing species, including direct electron transfer (DET), •OH, SO₄^•-, and other reactive oxygen species (ROS). Solution pH, supporting electrolyte, and water matrix affected the degradation efficiency of pollutants and the contribution of the oxidizing species. Br^- and I^- ions enhanced the degradation rate of organic pollutants, while Fe²⁺, HCO₃^-, and humic acid (HA) reduced it. In addition, the toxicity, total organic carbon (TOC) removal, mineralization current efficiency (MCE), energy consumption, recyclability and stability of the prepared electrode were studied, suggesting that the prepared Ti/SnO₂-Sb/Co-βPbO₂ is a good candidate for treating organic pollutants using the electrochemical oxidation process.

Volatile organic compounds in water matrices: Recent progress, challenges, and perspective

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are a group of organic compounds that have a molecular structure containing carbon and their chemical properties allow them to be easily converted to steam and gas and remain for a long period of time and have diverse effects on the environment. The purpose of this study is determination of the concentration of VOCs such as alachlor, anthracene, benzene, bromoform, chloroform, heptachlor, isophorone, tetrachloroethylene, γ -chlordane, toluene, etc. in water matrices. The results showed that among studies conducted on VOCs, the concentration of tetrachloroethylene, m,p-xylene, and toluene were at the top in water matrices, and the lowest average concentrations were found in chloroform, anthracene, and butyl benzyl phthalate. In terms of VOC concentrations in water matrices, China was the most polluted country. Moreover, the data analysis indicated that China was the only country with carcinogenic risk. A Monte-Carlo simulation showed that although the averages obtained were comparable to the acceptable limits, for heptachlor, the maximum carcinogenic risk is achieved at a level that is slightly over the limit, only 25% from the population being exposed.

Highly sensitive and selective colorimetric detection of Pb(ii) ions using Michelia tonkinensis seed extract capped gold nanoparticles

In this study, gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were synthesized via a green and environmentally-friendly approach and applied as a colorimetric probe for detecting Pb2+ ions in aqueous solution. Instead of toxic chemicals, Michelia tonkinensis (MT) seed extract was used for reducing Au3+ and stabilizing the formed AuNPs. The synthesis conditions, including temperature, reaction time, and Au3+ ion concentration, were optimized at 90 °C, 40 min, and 1.25 mM, respectively. The physicochemical properties of the produced MT-AuNPs were assessed by means of transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The characterization results revealed that the MT-AuNPs exhibited a spherical shape with a size of about 15 nm capped by an organic layer. The colorimetric assay based on MT-AuNPs showed excellent sensitivity and selectivity toward Pb2+ ions with the limit of detection value of 0.03 μM and the limit of quantification of 0.09 μM in the linear range of 50-500 μM. The recoveries of inter-day and intra-day tests were 97.84-102.08% and 98.78-102.34%, respectively. The MT-AuNPs probe also demonstrated good and reproducible recoveries (98.71-101.01%) in analyzing Pb2+ in drinking water samples, indicating satisfactory practicability and operability of the proposed method.

Novel biogenic gold nanoparticles stabilized on poly(styrene-co-maleic anhydride) as an effective material for reduction of nitrophenols and colorimetric detection of Pb(II)

Biogenic gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) have been extensively studied for the catalytic conversion of nitrophenols (NP) into aminophenols and the colorimetric quantification of heavy metal ions in aqueous solutions. However, the high self-agglomeration ability of colloidal nanoparticles is one of the major obstacles hindering their application. In the present study, we offered novel biogenic AuNPs synthesized by a green approach using Cistanche deserticola (CD) extract as a bioreducing agent and stabilized on poly(styrene-co-maleic anhydride) (PSMA). The prepared Au@PSMA nanoparticles were characterized by various techniques (HR-TEM, SEAD, FE-SEM, DLS, TGA, XRD, and FTIR) and studied for two applications: the catalytic reduction of 3-NP by NaBH₄ and the sensing detection of Pb²⁺ ions. The optimal conditions for the synthesis of AuNPs were investigated and established at 60 °C, 20 min, pH of 9, and 0.5 mM Au³⁺. Morphological studies showed that AuNPs synthesized by CD extract were mostly spherical with a mean diameter of 25 nm, while the size of polymer-integrated AuNPs was more than two-fold larger. Since PSMA acted as a matrix keeping the nanoparticles from coagulation and maintaining the optimal surface area, AuNPs integrated with PSMA showed higher catalytic efficiency with a faster reaction rate and lower activation energy than conventional nanoparticles. Au@PSMA could completely reduce 3-NP within 10 min with a rate constant of 0.127 min^-1 and activation energy of 9.96 kJ/mol. The presence of PSMA also improved the stability and recyclability of AuNPs. Used as a sensor, Au@PSMA exhibited excellent sensitivity and selectivity for Pb²⁺ ions with a limit of detection of 0.03 μM in the linear range of 0-100 μM. The study results suggested that Au@PSMA could be used as a promising catalyst for the reduction of NP and the colorimetric sensor for detection of Pb²⁺ ions in aqueous environmental samples.

Differential pulse voltammetry determination of salbutamol using disulfite tungsten/activated carbon modified glassy carbon electrode

In the present article, the disulfide tungsten/activated carbon derived from Eichhornia crassipes (WS₂/AC) was synthesized by the hydrothermal process. The received materials were examined by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray - mapping, and nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherms. The morphology of WS₂/AC was tailored to have a micro/meso/macro structure that facilized large electric conductivity and quick ion diffusion. The WS₂/AC sample was used as an electrode modifier for developing an electrochemical sensor for salbutamol detection. WS₂/AC exhibited excellent oxidation toward salbutamol. Through some optimized conditions, the electrochemical signal of the proposed sensor varied linearly to the salbutamol concentration ranging from 1 to 210 μM with a low LOD (detection limit) of 0.52 μM. The developed sensor showed several merits: easy producing, convenient usage, fabulous selectivity, and good repeatability as well as reproducibility. Finally, the suggested technique can be applied to determine salbutamol in people's biological fluid with satisfactory recoveries of 98.5-104.4% and without statistics different from standard HPLC.

Design synthesis of Y-90 glass microspheres and study of their therapeutic effects on mouse liver cancer cell line Hep3B

In this article, a system for synthesizing Y-90 glass microspheres (Y-90-GM) was successfully designed in the Da Lat nuclear reactor (Vietnam), and the therapeutic effects of Y-90-GM on mice liver cancer cell line Hep3B were studied. The effects of synthesis factors, including heating time, heating temperature, gas flow rate, sample conduit length and diameter, were investigated to establish the optimal parameters. The size and shape of Y-90-GM were checked by field emission scanning electron microscope, and the radioactivity measurement was performed on a dosimeter. The results indicated that the optimal conditions for the synthesis of Y-90-GM were determined as the heating temperature of 1600 °C, heating time of 2 h, conduit length and diameter of 50 cm and 3.6 cm, and gas/oxygen flow rate of 15 mph. The Y-90-GM samples obtained at the optimal parameters have a size of 18-30 μm with a density of 3.53 g cm^-3 and a specific radioactivity of 630 mCi g^-1. The results of the therapeutic study on mice liver cancer cell line Hep3B showed that after two weeks of treatment with Y-90-GM (1mCi/mouse), the tumor volume was reduced by about 30.7% and after 3 consecutive treatment cycles, the liver cancer tumor was completely reduced. It was demonstrated that Y-90-GM is promising radiopharmaceuticals in the treatment of liver cancer by the radioembolization method.

A state-of-the-art review on the nanomaterial-based sensor for detection of venlafaxine

Venlafaxine (denoted as VFX), a member of the most extensively prescribed antidepressants, is used to handle major depressive disorder, panic disorder and anxiety. This medication affects brain chemistry, which could cause an imbalance in depressed people. VFX and its metabolites, on the other hand, are pollutants in the water environment. Through movement and transformation in several procedures like adsorption, photolysis, hydrolysis and biodegradation, they have harmed living creatures, resulting in the enhancement of diverse active chemicals found in the environment. As a result, determining VFX at modest concentrations with excellent sensitivity, specificity and repeatability are critical. To quantify VFX, various analytical methodologies have been developed. Electroanalytical processes, on the other hand, have piqued interest because of their superior benefits over traditional techniques such as speed, sensitivity, directness and affordability. Subsequently, the purpose of this article is to show how to determine VFX electrochemically using a wide range of electrodes, including CPE, GCE, MCE, SPE, PGE and ISE.

A state-of-the-art review on graphene-based nanomaterials to determine antibiotics by electrochemical techniques

Antibiotics might build up into the human body by foodstuff metabolism, posing a serious threat to human health and safety. Establishing simple and sensitive technology for quick antibiotic evaluation is thus extremely important. Nanomaterials (or NMTs) with the advantage of possessing merits such as remarkable optical, thermal, mechanical, and electrical capabilities have been highlighted as a piece of the best promising materials for rising new paths in the creation of the future generation biosensors. This paper presents the most recent advances in the use of graphene NMTs-based biosensors to determine antibiotics. Gr-NMTs (or graphene nanomaterials) have been used in the development of a biosensor for the electrochemical signal-transducing process. The rising issues and potential chances of this field are contained to give a plan for forthcoming research orientations. As a result, this review provides a comprehensive evaluation of the nanostructured electrochemical sensing approach for antibiotic residues in various systems. In this review, various electrochemical techniques such as CV, DPV, Stripping, EIS, LSV, chronoamperometry, SWV were employed to determine antibiotics. Additionally, this also demonstrates how graphene nanomaterials are employed to detect antibiotics.

Flexible and high-sensitivity sensor based on Ti3C2-MoS2 MXene composite for the detection of toxic gases

It is vital to have high sensitivity in gas sensors to allow the exact detection of dangerous gases in the air and at room temperature. In this study, we used 2D MXenes and MoS₂ materials to create a Ti₃C₂-MoS₂ composite with high metallic conductivity and a wholly functionalized surface for a significant signal. At room temperature, the Ti₃C₂-MoS₂ composite demonstrated clear signals, cyclic response curves to NO₂ gas, and gas concentration-dependent. The sensitivities of the standard Ti₃C₂-MoS₂ (TM_2) composite (20 wt% MoS₂) rose dramatically to 35.8%, 63.4%, and 72.5% when increasing NO₂ concentrations to 10 ppm, 50 ppm, and 100 ppm, respectively. In addition, the composite showed reaction signals to additional hazardous gases, such as ammonia and methane. Our findings suggest that highly functionalized metallic sensing channels could be used to construct multigas-detecting sensors that are very sensitive in air and at room temperature.

Decontamination of toxic Malathion pesticide in aqueous solutions by Fenton-based processes: Degradation pathway, toxicity assessment and health risk assessment

This study evaluates the degradation efficiency of Malathion using Fenton (Fe²⁺/H₂O₂: F), photo-Fenton (UV/Fe²⁺/H₂O₂: PF), and sono-photo Fenton (US/UV/Fe²⁺/H₂O₂: SPF) processes as well as determines the toxicity of the byproducts of degradation. The effect of various operational parameters on the Malathion degradation rate, including pH, Fe²⁺ concentration, Malathion concentration, and H₂O₂ were studied. The removal efficiency was determined to be 98.79% for the SPF, > 70.92% for the PF, and > 55.94% for the F processes under the following optimal conditions: pH = 3, [H₂O₂]₀ = 700 mg/L, [Fe²⁺]₀ = 20 mg/L, and [Malathion]₀ = 20 mg/L. The operating costs (USD/kg_{Malathion-removed}) were acquired as SPF > PF > F. Moreover, Malaoxon, diethyl maleate, diethyl malate, ethyl 2-hydroxysuccinate, and D-malate were among the detected byproducts from the Malathion degradation in the SPF process. Both the non-carcinogenic risk and the carcinogenic risk were assessed to establish the quality of the effluent from all three processes. The toxicity of the treated effluents, determined by Vibrio fischeri luminescence, indicated that the toxicity depends on the selected treatment process. The high degradation efficiency of the Fenton-based processes is not equivalent to achieving detoxification of the effluents. As such, the SPF process was determined to be the most effective for the Malathion degradation, total organic carbon (TOC) removal, and health risk assessment.

Remediation of pharmaceuticals from contaminated water by molecularly imprinted polymers: a review

The release of pharmaceuticals into the environment induces adverse effects on the metabolism of humans and other living species, calling for advanced remediation methods. Conventional removal methods are often non-selective and cause secondary contamination. These issues may be partly solved by the use of recently-developped adsorbents such as molecularly imprinted polymers. Here we review the synthesis and application of molecularly imprinted polymers for removing pharmaceuticals in water. Molecularly imprinted polymers are synthesized via several multiple-step polymerization methods. Molecularly imprinted polymers are potent adsorbents at the laboratory scale, yet their efficiency is limited by template leakage and polymer quality. Adsorption performance of multi-templated molecularly imprinted polymers depends on the design of wastewater treatment plants, pharmaceutical consumption patterns and the population serviced by these wastewater treatment plants.

Graphene derivatives in bioplastic: A comprehensive review of properties and future perspectives

The research and technological advancements observed in the latest years in the nanotechnology field translated into significant application developments in various areas. This is particularly true for the renewable polymers area, where the nano-reinforcement of biobased materials leads to an increase in their technique and economic competitiveness. The efforts were predominantly focused on materials development and energy consumption minimization. However, attention must also be given to the widespread commercialization and the full characterization of any particular potential toxicological and environmental impact. Some of the most important nanomaterials used in recent years as fillers in the bioplastic industry are graphene-based materials (GBMs). GBMs have high surface area and biocompatibility and have interesting characterizations such as strangeness and flexibility. In this paper, the current state of the art for these GBMs in the bioplastics area, their challenges, and the strategies to overcome them are analyzed.

Novel biogenic silver and gold nanoparticles for multifunctional applications: Green synthesis, catalytic and antibacterial activity, and colorimetric detection of Fe(III) ions

In this study, novel biogenic silver (AgNPs) and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were developed using a green approach with Ganoderma lucidum (GL) extract. The optimization of synthesis conditions for the best outcomes was conducted. The prepared materials were characterized and their applicability in catalysis, antibacterial and chemical sensing was comprehensively evaluated. The GL-AgNPs crystals were formed in a spherical shape with an average diameter of 50 nm, while GL-AuNPs exhibited multi-shaped structures with sizes ranging from 15 to 40 nm. As a catalyst, the synthesized nanoparticles showed excellent catalytic activity (>98% in 9 min) and reusability (>95% after five recycles) in converting 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol. As an antimicrobial agent, GL-AuNPs were low effective in inhibiting the growth of bacteria, while GL-AgNPs expressed strong antibacterial activity against all the tested strains. The highest growth inhibition activity of GL-AgNPs was observed against B. subtilis (14.58 ± 0.35 mm), followed by B. cereus (13.8 ± 0.52 mm), P. aeruginosa (12.38 ± 0.64 mm), E. coli (11.3 ± 0.72 mm), and S. aureus (10.41 ± 0.31 mm). Besides, GL-AgNPs also demonstrated high selectivity and sensitivity in the colorimetric detection of Fe³⁺ in aqueous solution with a detection limit of 1.85 nM. Due to the suitable thickness of the protective organic layer and the appropriate particle size, GL-AgNPs validated the triple role as a high-performance catalyst, antimicrobial agent, and nanosensor for environmental monitoring and remediation.

A comprehensive review on MXenes as new nanomaterials for degradation of hazardous pollutants: Deployment as heterogeneous sonocatalysis

MXene-based nanomaterials (MBNs) are two-dimensional materials that exhibit a series of sought after properties, including rich surface chemistry, adjustable bandgap structures, high electrical conductivity, hydrophobicity, thermal stability, and large specific surface area. MBNs have an exemplar performance when applied for the degradation of hazardous pollutants with various advanced oxidation processes such as heterogeneous sonocatalysis. As such, this work focuses on the sonocatalytic degradation of various hazardous pollutants using MXene-based catalysts. First, the general principles of sonocatalysis are examined, followed by an analysis of the main components of the MXene-based sonocatalysts and their application for pollutant degradation. Lastly, ongoing challenges are highlighted with recommendations to address the issues.

Efficient and fast degradation of 4-nitrophenol and detection of Fe(III) ions by Poria cocos extract stabilized silver nanoparticles

In this study, a simple and environment-friendly method has been successfully applied for the production of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using Poria cocos extract. The reaction time of 60 min, the temperature of 90 °C, and silver ion concentration of 2.0 mM were identified as the best condition for the PC-AgNPs fabrication. The XRD analysis confirmed a highly crystalline face-centered cubic structure of the biosynthesized material. The PC-AgNPs were presented separately in a spherical shape with an average crystal size of 20 nm, as endorsed by the TEM and FE-SEM measurements. The presence and crucial role of biomolecules in stabilizing the nanoparticles were elucidated by FTIR, EDX, and DLS techniques. The prepared biogenic nanoparticles were further applied for the reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) and colorimetric detection of Fe³⁺ ions. The study results proved that PC-AgNPs exhibited superior catalytic activity and reusability in the conversion of 4-NP by NaBH₄. The complete reduction of 4-NP could be achieved in 10 min with the pseudo-first-order rate constant of 0.466 min^-1, and no significant performance loss was found when the material was reused five times. The colorimetric probe based on PC-AgNPs displayed outstanding sensitivity and selectivity towards Fe³⁺ ions with a detection limit of 1.5 μM in a linear range of 0-250 μM. Additionally, the applicability of the developed assay was explored for testing Fe³⁺ ions in tap water. PC-AgNPs have a great potential for further applications as a promising catalyst for reducing nitrophenols and biosensors for the routine monitoring of Fe³⁺ in water.

Graphene-based materials for metronidazole degradation: A comprehensive review

Due to its cytotoxic effect, metronidazole (MNZ) is a drug commonly used to treat bacterial, protozoal, and microaerophilic bacterial infections. After consumption, it undergoes a series of metamorphic reactions that lead to the degradation of oxidized, acetylated, and hydrolyzed metabolites in the environment. To eliminate such pollutants, due to their high potential, adsorption and photocatalysis extensive processes are used in which graphene can be used to improve efficiency. This review analyses the use of graphene as an absorbent and catalyst with a focus on absorption and photocatalytic degradation of MNZ by graphene-based materials (GBMs). The parameters affecting the adsorption, and photocatalytic degradation of MNZ are investigated and discussed. Besides, the basic mechanisms occurring in these processes are summarized and analyzed. This work provides a theoretical framework that can direct future research in the field of MNZ removal from aqueous solutions.

Synthesis, characterization, and sorption activity of novel azo-colorants derived from phloroglucinol and antipyrine and their metal complexes

Two novel azo-colorants derived from phloroglucinol and antipyrine as well as 10 metal complexes with Co(ii), Ni(ii), Zn(ii), Cu(ii), and Cd(ii) were isolated and studied by a set of methods (¹H, ¹³C NMR, IR, UV-VIS, EPR, X-ray structure determination). The azo-coupling of phloroglucinol with a 5-pyrazolone amino-derivative led to the isolation of a colorant H₃L¹ which was presented in the hydroxy-azo tautomeric form. At nitrosation of H₃L¹, the product H₃L² was isolated, which can be described as tri-oxo di-hydroxylamino hydrazone. According to the X-ray structure determination, the Cd-complex of H₃L¹ exhibited the dimeric form with two unionized organic ligands in the inner sphere. It was also found that chloride anions bridge two cadmium cations to form dimers. According to EPR spectra, the Cu-complex with H₃L¹ exhibited distorted tetragonal symmetry associated with the d _{x ²-y ²} ground state rather than d _{z ²} , and the corresponding Cu-H₃L² complex was described by a cubic symmetry of the coordination medium. Both H₃L¹, H₃L², and their metal complexes show coloristic activity towards wool, polyamide, and polyacetate fibers, which are strongly resistant towards UV-irradiation. The H₃L² compound possessed good sorption activity towards heavy metal cations from aqueous solutions of trace concentrations both under static and dynamic conditions.

TiO2/Ti3C2/g-C3N4 ternary heterojunction for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Photocatalytic hydrogen (H₂) generation derived by water has been considered as a renewable energy to solve environmental problems and global energy crises. Thus, it is necessary to explore the most effective photocatalysts by using multi-cocatalysts, due to an intimate interaction between different components. Therefore, we already synthesized the TiO₂/Ti₃C₂/g-C₃N₄ (TTC) photocatalyst from g-C₃N₄ and Ti₃C₂ MXene via a calcination technique, and applied this composite for H₂ evolution. By making use of titanium atom from Ti₃C₂ MXene, titanium dioxide (TiO₂) was in-body developed, which leads to form a close heterostructure between metallic material and semiconductors. Besides, g-C₃N₄ amorphous with highly surface area also contributes to harvest light irradiation during photocatalytic activity. The optimized TTC-450 heterostructure showed a super H₂ generation efficiency than those of pure g-C₃N₄ and other samples. Besides, TTC-450 sample also exhibited great recyclability after 4 runs. The proposed mechanism illustrates the efficient movement of generated electrons in TTC system, which leads to high H₂ evolution efficiency. Moreover, the obtained results consistently emphasize the TiO₂/Ti₃C₂/g-C₃N₄ composite would be a unique material for H₂ production and broaden applications of MXene materials.

The Fenton-like reaction for Arsenic removal from groundwater: Health risk assessment

In this paper, the heterogeneous Fenton like-reaction for Arsenic-contaminated groundwater remediation based on the performance of FeSO₄ as an efficient and green catalyst and CaO₂ as a source of H₂O₂ was investigated. To intensify the heterogeneous Fenton process, three oxidants were tested: sodium percarbonate (SPC), sodium persulfate (SPS), and calcium peroxide (CP). The results showed that CP and SPC had a synergetic effect on the rate of Arsenic degradation, while SPS had an antagonistic effect. On the other hand, inorganic ions such as Na⁺, Mg²⁺ have a very low impact on the Arsenic removal efficiency, while the anions Cl^- and NO₃^- exhibited significant inhibition of Arsenic degradation. This effect may be imputed to the reaction and conversion of hydroxyl (HO^•) radicals to less reactive. Thus, HCO₃^- and humic acid dramatically raised the degradation rate. Also, the response Surface method based on Box-Behnken design was applied to examine the suitable modeling, and optimized condition of the Fenton like-reaction process, the maximum Arsenic removal efficiency of 94.91% is obtained when [Fe³⁺]₀ = 1.97 mM, [CaO₂]₀ = 1.74 mM and initial pH = 4.67. The obtained results showed that the Fenton-like reaction is an effective and reliable process for arsenic removal from groundwater with low non-carcinogenic risk (HQ) and carcinogenic risk (CR) values.

Cu2O/Fe3O4/MIL-101(Fe) nanocomposite as a highly efficient and recyclable visible-light-driven catalyst for degradation of ciprofloxacin

Nowadays, the widespread production and use of antibiotics have increased their presence in wastewater systems, posing a potential threat to the environment and human health. The development of advanced materials for treating antibiotics in wastewater has always received special attention. This study aimed to synthesize a novel Cu₂O/Fe₃O₄/MIL-101(Fe) nanocomposite and use it to degrade ciprofloxacin (CIP) antibiotics in an aqueous solution under visible light irradiation. The optical, structural, and morphological attributes of the developed nanocomposite were analyzed by XRD, FTIR, FE-SEM, TGA, DRS, BET, VSM, and UV-Vis techniques. Optimum circumstances for CIP photocatalytic degradation were acquired in 0.5 g L^-1 of catalyst dosage, pH of 7, and CIP concentration of 20 mg L^-1. The degradation efficiency was achieved 99.2% after 105 min of irradiation in optimum circumstances. The chemical trapping experiments confirmed that hydroxyl and superoxide radicals significantly contributed to the CIP degradation process. The results of this study indicated that Cu₂O/Fe₃O₄/MIL-101(Fe) nanocomposite was a highly stable photocatalyst that could effectively remove antibiotics from aqueous solutions. The CIP degradation efficiency only decreased by 6% after five cycles, indicating the excellent recyclability of Cu₂O/Fe₃O₄/MIL-101(Fe) nanocomposites.

Photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange dye by Ti3C2-TiO2 heterojunction under solar light

Photocatalytic activity is a feasible solution to tackle environmental pollution caused by industrial pollutants. In this research, Ti₃C₂-TiO₂ composite with a unique structure was fabricated successfully via a hydrothermal method. Especially, the in-situ transformation of TiO₂ from Ti₃C₂ MXene creates an intimate heterostructure, which leads to prolonging separation and migration of charged carriers. Thus, this Ti₃C₂-TiO₂ composite enhances effectively methyl orange (MO) degradation efficiency (around 99%) after 40 light-exposed minutes. Besides, the optimal concentration of MO solution was estimated at 40 mg/L and Ti₃C₂-TiO₂ photocatalyst also exhibited good stability after five runs. Moreover, the radical trapping test and the MO photodegradation mechanism over Ti₃C₂-TiO₂ system were also demonstrated. This research illustrates the potential of MXenes as effective co-catalysts for photocatalysis and extends the applications of two-dimensional materials.

Natural core-shell structure activated carbon beads derived from Litsea glutinosa seeds for removal of methylene blue: Facile preparation, characterization, and adsorption properties

In this study, natural core-shell structure activated carbon beads (ACBs) from Litsea glutinosa seeds were successfully produced, characterized, and applied for adsorption of methylene blue (MB). The ACBs were prepared using single-step carbonization-activation with NaHCO₃ at the optimized activation temperature, time, and activating agent concentration of 450 °C, 60 min, and 5%, respectively. Batch experiments were performed to determine the optimum adsorption conditions, suitable kinetic and isotherm models, and thermodynamic parameters for the adsorption of MB onto ACBs. The results showed that the ACBs were displayed as highly porous natural core-shell spheres with a diameter of about 5 mm. The adsorption of MB dye on ACBs was a spontaneous endothermic process, followed the Langmuir isotherm and the pseudo-second-order kinetic models with the rate-controlling step of both external diffusion and intra-particle diffusion. At the optimum conditions (pH of 9, the contact time of 10 h, the temperature of 40 °C, and an adsorbent dosage of 6 g/L), the maximum adsorption capacity reached 29.03 mg/g. The thermal method turned out to be more suitable for regenerating ACBs compared to the chemical method. The ACBs exhibited high reusability and stability, its adsorption efficiency could maintain more than 90% after five consecutive cycles of use. The electrostatic attraction, π-π interaction, hydrogen bonding, and pore-filling were identified as primary contributions to the adsorption mechanism. The overall results revealed that the ACBs could be used as a potential adsorbent for removing MB from water media.

Fabrication of Fe3O4/CuO@C composite from MOF-based materials as an efficient and magnetically separable photocatalyst for degradation of ciprofloxacin antibiotic

In this work, a novel ternary Fe₃O₄/CuO@C composite was fabricated using iron-doped copper 1,4-benzenedicarboxylate metal-organic frameworks as a self-sacrificing template. The morphological, structural, and optical properties of the prepared composite were determined by various techniques, and its photocatalytic behavior was investigated for degradation of ciprofloxacin under visible light irradiation. The Fe₃O₄/CuO@C material presented a porous structure with a rough surface of about 4-20 μm, and was composed of the Fe₃O₄/CuO nanocomposite uniformly distributed on a carbon support. The band gap energy of the obtained composite was found to be 2.0 eV, which was nearly two times lower than that of Fe₃O₄@C and CuO@C. As a result, Fe₃O₄/CuO@C exhibited high photocatalytic activity, achieving a degradation efficiency of 98.5% after 120 min irradiation at the optimum conditions (a catalyst dosage of 0.5 g L^-1, pH of 7, CIP concentration of 15 mg L^-1). The mechanism of ciprofloxacin degradation by Fe₃O₄/CuO@C was elucidated with the main contribution of O₂^-and OH reactive radicals. The new composite catalyst could easily be recovered from the treated solution using an external magnetic field due to its superparamagnetic nature. Fe₃O₄/CuO@C also showed good reusability and stability. The overall results indicated that the synthesized composite has significant application potential for controlling the risk of antibiotics in wastewater.

Effective reduction of nitrophenols and colorimetric detection of Pb(ii) ions by Siraitia grosvenorii fruit extract capped gold nanoparticles

This study presents a simple and green approach for the synthesis of Siraitia grosvenorii fruit extract capped gold nanoparticles (SG-AuNPs). The SG-AuNPs samples prepared under the optimized conditions were characterized by various techniques (UV-Vis, XRD, FTIR, HR-TEM, EDX, DLS). The biosynthesized nanoparticles were then studied for the reduction of 2-nitrophenol (2-NP) and 3-nitrophenols (3-NP) and for colorimetric detection of Pb2+ ions. The characterization results revealed that the crystals of SG-AuNPs were spherical with an average size of 7.5 nm. The FTIR and DLS analyses proved the presence of the biomolecule layer around AuNPs, which played an important role in stabilizing the nanoparticles. The SG-AuNPs showed excellent catalytic activity in the reduction of 3-NP and 2-NP, achieving complete conversion within 14 min. The catalytic process was endothermic and followed pseudo-first-order kinetics. The activation energy was determined to be 10.64 and 26.53 kJ mol-1 for 2-NP and 3-NP, respectively. SG-AuNPs maintained high catalytic performance after five recycles. The fabricated material was also found to be highly sensitive and selective to Pb2+ ions with the detection limit of 0.018 μM in a linear range of 0-1000 μM. The practicality of the material was validated through the analyses of Pb2+ in mimic pond water samples. The developed nanoparticles could find tremendous applications in environmental monitoring.

High-efficient reduction of methylene blue and 4-nitrophenol by silver nanoparticles embedded in magnetic graphene oxide

In this study, a ternary magnetically separable nanocomposite of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) embedded in magnetic graphene oxide (Ag/Fe₃O₄@GO) was designed and synthesized. Beta-cyclodextrin was used as a green reducing and capping agent for decorating of AgNPs on Fe₃O₄@GO. The fabricated material was characterized using X-ray diffractometry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, vibrating sample magnetometry, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The catalytic properties of the prepared Ag/Fe₃O₄@GO for the reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) and methylene blue (MB) dye with sodium borohydride were investigated in detail. The morphological and structural studies revealed that Fe₃O₄ and AgNPs with a mean size of 12 nm were uniformly distributed on the GO sheet at high densities. The catalytic tests showed that Ag/Fe₃O₄@GO exhibited an ultrafast catalytic reduction of 4-NP and MB with a reduction rate constant of 0.304 min^-1 and 0.448 min^-1, respectively. Moreover, the catalyst demonstrated excellent stability and reusability, as evidenced by the more than 97% removal efficiency maintained after five reuse cycles. The Ag/Fe₃O₄@GO catalyst could be easily recovered by the magnetic separation due to the superparamagnetic nature of Fe₃O₄ with high saturated magnetization (45.7 emu/g). Besides, the formation of networking between the formed AgNPs and β-CD through hydrogen bonding prevented the agglomeration of AgNPs, ensuring their high catalytic ability. The leaching study showed that the dissolution of Fe and Ag from Ag/Fe₃O₄@GO was negligible, indicating the environmental friendliness of the synthesized catalyst. Finally, the high catalytic performance, excellent stability, and recoverability of Ag/Fe₃O₄@GO make it a potential candidate for the reduction of organic pollutants in wastewater.

Photocatalytic-persulfate- oxidation for diclofenac removal from aqueous solutions: Modeling, optimization and biotoxicity test assessment

In this paper, the influence of several aquatic factors (the nature of catalyst, the initial pH and the initial concentration of the pollutant) on the photocatalytic degradation of diclofenac (DFC), one of the most widely prescribed anti-inflammatory non-steroidal drug, was studied. Also, in order to examine the intensification process, the variation of the photocatalytic DFC degradation in the presence of sodium persulfate (PPS) was analyzed. It was found that, compared to titanium dioxide (TiO₂), the zinc oxide (ZnO) photocatalyst performed exceptionally well, with a 96.13% DFC degradation efficiency after 150 min. The photodegradation of DFC by ZnO catalyst fitted well the Langmuir-Hinshelwood kinetic model. The maximum efficiency is 97.27% for simulated solar-UVA/ZnO/PPS and 77% for simulated solar-UVA/ZnO. In order to determine the optimal conditions leading to the maximization of DFC removal, an artificial neural network (ANN) modeling approach combined with genetic algorithm (GA) was applied. The best ANN determined had a correlation of 0.999 and it was further used in the process optimization where a 99.7% degradation efficiency was identified as the optimum under the following conditions: DFC initial concentration 37,9 mg L^-1, pH 5,88 and PPS initial concentration 500 mg L^-1. The effectiveness of the process and the toxicity of the pharmaceutical pollutants and their by-products were also evaluated and confirmed by the biological tests using liver and kidney of Mus musculus mice.

Adsorption of Ni(II) ions by magnetic activated carbon/chitosan beads prepared from spent coffee grounds, shrimp shells and green tea extract

Magnetic activated carbon/chitosan composite (MACCS) beads from spent coffee grounds and shrimp shells were synthesized using green tea extract as a crosslinker. The adsorbent was then applied for removal of Ni(II) ions from aqueous solution after carefully characterizing it by various techniques (XRD, FTIR, FE-SEM, EDX, VSM and BET). The adsorption kinetics, isotherms, thermodynamics, the effects of key adsorption factors such as the pH value, initial Ni(II) concentration, contact time, adsorbent dose and temperature were investigated in detail. A possible adsorption mechanism was proposed. The results indicated that the adsorption process was thermodynamically favourable, spontaneous, endothermic, and was best described by the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic models. The MACCS beads with an optimum CS to MAC weight ratio estimated as 60:40 gave the maximum monolayer adsorption capacity for Ni(II) ions of 108.70 mg g^-1 at 25°C, pH of 6, adsorbent dose of 1.0g L^-1 and a contact time of 6 h. The recycling study confirmed that the adsorption ability of MACCS beads towards Ni(II) ions maintained well after five consecutive cycles with the removal efficiency greater than 86.25%. Eventually, the MACCS beads could be used as an environmentally-friendly and highly efficient adsorbent for removal of Ni(II) ions from wastewater due to the advantages of high efficiency, rapid separation and good reusability.

Appearance of reassortant European avian-origin H1 influenza A viruses of swine in Vietnam

Three subtypes-H1N1, H1N2 and H3N2-of influenza A viruses of swine (IAVs-S) are currently endemic in swine worldwide, but there is considerable genotypic diversity among each subtype and limited geographical distribution. Through IAVs-S monitoring in Vietnam, two H1N2 influenza A viruses were isolated from healthy pigs in Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province, Southern Vietnam, on 2 December 2016. BLAST and phylogenetic analyses revealed that their HA and NA genes were derived from those of European avian-like H1N2 IAVs-S that contained avian-origin H1 and human-like N2 genes, and were particularly closely related to those of IAVs-S circulating in the Netherlands, Germany or Denmark. In addition, the internal genes of these Vietnamese isolates were derived from human A(H1N1)pdm09 viruses, suggesting that the Vietnamese H1N2 IAVs-S are reassortants between European H1N2 IAVs-S and human A(H1N1)pdm09v. The appearance of European avian-like H1N2 IAVs-S in Vietnam marks their first transmission outside Europe. Our results and statistical analyses of the number of live pigs imported into Vietnam suggest that the European avian-like H1N2 IAVs-S may have been introduced into Vietnam with their hosts through international trade. These findings highlight the importance of quarantining imported pigs to impede the introduction of new IAVs-S.

Emergence of an exotic strain of serotype O foot-and-mouth disease virus O/ME-SA/Ind-2001d in South-East Asia in 2015

The O/Middle East-South Asia (ME-SA)/Ind-2001 lineage of foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) is endemic in the Indian subcontinent and has been reported in the Middle East and North Africa, but it had not been detected in South-East Asia (SEA) before 2015. This study reports the recent incursions of this viral lineage into SEA, which caused outbreaks in Vientiane Capital of Lao People's Democratic Republic (PDR) in April 2015, in Dak Nong, Dak Lak and Ninh Thuan Provinces of Vietnam from May to October 2015, and in Rakhine State of Myanmar in October 2015. Disease investigations were conducted during the outbreaks and followed up after laboratory results confirmed the involvement of FMDV O/ME-SA/Ind-2001 sublineage d (O/ME-SA/Ind-2001d). Affected host species included cattle, buffalo and pig, and all the outbreaks resolved within 2 months. Animals with clinical signs were separated, and affected premises were disinfected. However, strict movement restrictions were not enforced, and emergency vaccinations were only implemented in Vientiane Capital of Lao PDR and Dak Nong and Ninh Thuan Provinces of Vietnam. Clinical samples were collected from each outbreak and examined by nucleotide sequencing of the FMDV viral protein 1 coding region. Sequence analysis revealed that the O/ME-SA/Ind-2001d isolates from Lao PDR and Vietnam were closely related to each other and similar to viruses previously circulating in India in 2013. Viruses collected from Myanmar were divergent from viruses of the same sublineage recovered from Lao PDR and Vietnam but were closely related to viruses present in Bangladesh in 2015. These findings imply that at least two independent introductions of O/ME-SA/Ind-2001d into SEA have occurred. Our study highlights the transboundary nature of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) and reinforces the importance of improved FMD surveillance and promotion of safer cross-border trade in SEA to control the risk of introduction and spread of exotic FMDV strains.

An Integrative Analysis of Foot-and-Mouth Disease Virus Carriers in Vietnam Achieved Through Targeted Surveillance and Molecular Epidemiology

Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is a major constraint to transboundary trade in animal products, yet much of its natural ecology and epidemiology in endemic regions is still poorly understood. To address this gap, a multidisciplinary, molecular and conventional epidemiological approach was applied to an investigation of endemic FMD in Vietnam. Within the study space, it was found that 22.3% of sampled ruminants had previously been infected with FMD virus (FMDV), of which 10.8% were persistent, asymptomatic carriers (2.4% of the total population). Descriptive data collected from targeted surveillance and a farm questionnaire showed a significantly lower prevalence of FMDV infection for dairy farms. In contrast, farms of intermediate size and/or history of infection in 2010 were at increased risk of FMD exposure. At the individual animal level, buffalo had the highest exposure risk (over cattle), and there was spatial heterogeneity in exposure risk at the commune level. Conversely, carrier prevalence was higher for beef cattle, suggesting lower susceptibility of buffalo to persistent FMDV infection. To characterize virus strains currently circulating in Vietnam, partial FMDV genomic (VP1) sequences from carrier animals collected between 2012 and 2013 (N = 27) and from FMDV outbreaks between 2009 and 2013 (N = 79) were compared by phylogenetic analysis. Sequence analysis suggested that within the study period, there were two apparent novel introductions of serotype A viruses and that the dominant lineage of serotype O in Vietnam shifted from SEA/Mya-98 to ME-SA/PanAsia. FMDV strains shared close ancestors with FMDV from other South-East Asian countries indicating substantial transboundary movement of the predominant circulating strains. Close genetic relationships were observed between carrier and outbreak viruses, which may suggest that asymptomatic carriers of FMDV contribute to regional disease persistence. Multiple viral sequences obtained from carrier cattle over a 1-year period had considerable within-animal genetic variation, indicating within-host virus evolution.

Phylogenetic and phylogeographic analyses of porcine circovirus type 2 among pig farms in Vietnam

This study demonstrated the prevalence of Porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) among pig farms in Vietnam. Analyses of the genome, capsid protein and phylogeny classified all 30 Vietnamese PCV2 strains as the PCV2b genotype, belonging to the clusters of 1A, 1B, 1C and recombinant forms. Each viral genome was 1767 nucleotides long and shared 96.0-100% nucleotide sequence identity. The amino acid substitutions in the capsid protein of the Vietnamese PCV2 strains were in immunodominant regions, and the majority of strains (24/30) contained a lysine extension at the C-terminus. Bayesian phylogeographic analysis revealed epidemic links of the PCV2 recombinant cluster within and among countries, which supports a circulating recombinant form of PCV2. Further analysis by the Jameson-Wolf antigenic index indicated antigenic alterations at important sites in the capsid protein (sites 131-133) among the recombinant cluster and the other clusters of PCV2b.

A picture archiving and communications system featuring multiple monitors using Windows98

We present an effective approach to manage, review, and distribute Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) images with multiple monitors using Windows98 (Microsoft Corp, Redmond, WA) that can be implemented in an office-based setting. Computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and angiographic DICOM images were collected, compressed, and stored using Medweb (Medweb, Inc, San Francisco, CA) software. The Medweb server used the Linux/UNIX operating system on a Pentium 333-MHz processor with 128 MB of RAM. Short-term storage capacity was about 2 weeks with routine usage of an 11-GB hard drive. Images were presented for reading on a dual-monitor Windows98 Pentium display station with 160 MB of RAM using a Medweb/Netscape (Netscape Communications Corp, Mountain View, CA) viewer. There was no significant discrepancy in diagnosis between electronic and conventional film images. Mean reading time for 32 cases was 118 seconds. The Medweb JAVA plug-in viewer loaded the first image within 30 seconds of selecting the case for review. Full uncompressed 16-bit images allowed different window settings to better assess for pathology. Multiple monitors allowed viewing various hanging protocols. Cine viewing was also possible. Key diagnostic images were electronically transmitted to referring physicians. On-call radiologists were able to access images through the Internet. By combining Medweb, DICOM, and web-browser software using desktop personal computers (PCs), an easily accessible picture archiving and communications system (PACS) is available to radiologists and referring physicians. Multiple monitors are easily configured and managed using Windows98. This system can sustain changes and can be extended to provide variable functions using inexpensive PCs.

Occupational exposure and chronic respiratory symptoms--a population based study in Vietnam

In order to investigate the relationship between occupational exposure to dust/chemicals (toxic gases/fumes) and chronic respiratory symptoms in Vietnam, the questionnaire standardized by the American Thoracic Society was applied to 368 subjects living in Ha Thai district of Vietnam. According to the results of multiple logistic regression analyses, the odds ratios of chronic respiratory symptoms by occupational exposure are over unity, except for the relationship between chronic cough and occupational exposure to chemicals. Especially for chronic breathlessness, significantly higher odds ratios are observed among people with a history of occupational exposure to dust or chemicals: 2.925 (95% CI: 1.130-7.574) for dust, and 3.721 (95% CI: 1.412-9.803) for chemicals. As for the interaction between occupational exposure to dust and cigarette smoking, it is considered that occupational exposure leads to an increase in chronic respiratory symptoms independent of the effects of cigarette smoking.

Effects of earplugs on catecholamine and cortisol excretion in noise-exposed textile workers

To investigate physiological and psychological effects of industrial noise, a survey was performed on 50 female workers exposed to machinery noise [93-100 dB(A)] (noise group) and 25 female workers in less-noisy environments [71-75 dB(A)] (control group) in a textile factory in Vietnam. Urine was collected for analysis of catecholamines and cortisol. The subjects were also asked to fill out a questionnaire. Each subject was examined over 2 working days. The workers in the noise group were asked to put earplugs in their ears during the working hours of the 2nd day. On the 1st day without earplugs, urinary excretion of catecholamines in the noise group were greater than those in the control group. Cortisol in urine showed a similar tendency. Differences in catecholamine excretion between the noise group and the control group decreased on the 2nd day when the earplugs were used for attenuation of noise level in the noise group. Frequency of subjective fatigue symptoms was lower on the 2nd day than that on the 1st day in noise group, while the control group showed almost no day-difference. The results indicate that the catecholamine response to noise in workers was reduced through the use of earplugs.
