Transport and risk of airborne pathogenic microorganisms in the process of decentralized sewage discharge and treatment

Sewage treatment processes are a critical anthropogenic source of bioaerosols and may present significant health risks to plant workers. Compared with the specialization and scale of urban sewage treatment, many decentralized treatment models are flexible and extensive. These treatment facilities are usually close to residential areas owing to the pipe network layout and other restrictions. Bioaerosols generated by these facilities may present a serious and widespread occupational and non-occupational exposure risk to nearby residents, particularly the elderly and children. An understanding of the characteristics and exposure risks of bioaerosols produced during decentralized sewage treatment is lacking. We compared bioaerosol emission characteristics and potential exposure risks under four decentralized sewage discharge methods and treatment models: small container collection (SCC), open-channel discharge (OCD), single household/combined treatment (SHCT), and centralized treatment (CT) in northwest China. The OCD mode had the highest bioaerosol production, whereas the CT mode had the lowest. The OCD model contained the most pathogenic bacterial species, up to 43 species, including Sphingomonas, Pseudomonas, Cladosporium, and Alternaria. Risk assessments indicated bioaerosol exposure was lower in the models with sewage treatment (SHCT and CT) than in those without (SCC and OCD). Different populations exhibited large variations in potential risks owing to differences in time spent indoors and outdoors. The highest risk was observed in males exposed to the SCC model. This study provides a theoretical basis and theories for the future joint prevention and control of the bioaerosol exposure risk from decentralized sewage treatment.

Global responses to tris(1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate and tris(2-butoxyethyl) phosphate in Escherichia coli: Evidences from biomarkers, and metabolic disturbance using GC-MS and LC-MS metabolomics analyses

Tris(1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TCPP) and tris(2-butoxyethyl) phosphate (TBEP) as pollutants of emerging concern have aroused the rising attention due to their potential risks on aquatic ecosystem and public health. Nevertheless, there is a lack of toxicological mechanisms exploration of TCPP and TBEP at molecular levels. Herein, the toxicity effects and molecular mechanism of them were fully researched and summarized on Escherichia coli (E.coli). Acute exposure to them significantly activated antioxidant defense system and caused lipid peroxidation, as proved by the changes of antioxidant enzymes and MDA. The ROS overload resulted in the drop of membrane potential as well as the downregulated synthesis of ATPase, endorsing that E. coli cytotoxicity was ascribed to oxidative stress damage induced by TCPP and TBEP. The combination of GC-MS and LC-MS based metabolomics validated that TCPP and TBEP induced metabolic reprogramming in E.coli. More specifically, the responsive metabolites in carbohydrate metabolism, lipids metabolism, nucleotide metabolism, amino acid metabolism, and organic acids metabolism were significantly disturbed by TCPP and TBEP, confirming the negative effects on metabolic functions and key bioprocesses. Additionally, several biomarkers including PE(16:1(5Z)/15:0), PA(17:1(9Z)/18:2(9Z,12Z)), PE(19:1(9Z)/0:0), and LysoPE(0:0/18:1(11Z)) were remarkably upregulated, verifying that the protection of cellular membrane was conducted by regulating the expression of lipids-associated metabolites. Collectively, this work sheds new light on the potential molecular toxicity mechanism of TCPP and TBEP on aquatic organisms, and these findings using GC-MS and LC-MS metabolomics generate a fresh insight into assessing the effects of OPFRs on target and non-target aquatic organisms.

Combination of scavenger receptor-A with anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide antibody for the diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis

OBJECTIVES

The routine biomarkers for rheumatoid arthritis (RA), including anticyclic citrullinated peptide antibody (anti-CCP), rheumatoid factor (RF), immunoglobulin M (IgM), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), and C-reaction protein (CRP) have limited sensitivity and specificity. Scavenger receptor-A (SR-A) is a novel RA biomarker identified by our group recently, especially for seronegative RA. Here, we performed a large-scale multicentre study to further assess the diagnostic value of SR-A in combination with other biomarkers for RA.

METHODS

The performance of SR-A in combination with other biomarkers for RA diagnosis was first revealed by a pilot study, and was further elucidated by a large-scale multicentre study. A total of 1129 individuals from 3 cohorts were recruited in the study, including RA patients, healthy controls, and patients with other common rheumatic diseases. Diagnostic properties were evaluated by the covariate-adjusted receiver-operating characteristic (AROC) curve, sensitivity, specificity and clinical association, respectively.

RESULTS

Large-scale multicentre analysis showed that SR-A and anti-CCP dual combination was the optimal method for RA diagnosis, increasing the sensitivity of anti-CCP by 13% (87% vs 74%) while maintaining a specificity of 90%. In early RA patients, SR-A and anti-CCP dual combination also showed promising diagnostic value, increasing the sensitivity of anti-CCP by 7% (79% vs 72%) while maintaining a specificity of 94%. Moreover, SR-A and anti-CCP dual combination was correlated with ESR, IgM, and autoantibodies of RA patients, further revealing its clinical significance.

CONCLUSION

SR-A and anti-CCP dual combination could potentially improve early diagnosis of RA, thus improving the prognosis and reducing mortality.

High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography Coupled with Single Quadrupole: Application the Identification and Differentiation of Rehmanniae Radix and Its Different Processing Products from Raw Materials to Commercial Products

The authentication of ingredients in formulas is crucial yet challenging, particularly for constituents with comparable compositions but vastly divergent efficacy. Rehmanniae Radix and its derivatives are extensively utilized in food supplements, which contain analogous compositions but very distinct effects. Rehmanniae Radix, also a difficult-to-detect herbal ingredient, was chosen as a case to explore a novel HPTLC-QDa MS technique for the identification of herbal ingredients in commercial products. Through systematic condition optimization, including thin layer and mass spectrometry, a stable and reproducible HPTLC-QDa MS method was established, which can simultaneously detect oligosaccharides and iridoids. Rehmannia Radix and its processed products were then analyzed to screen five markers that could distinguish between raw and prepared Rehmannia Radix. An HPTLC-QDa-SIM method was further established for formula detection by using the five markers and validated using homemade prescriptions and negative controls. Finally, this method was applied to detect raw and prepared Rehmannia Radix in 12 commercial functional products and supplements.

Netrin-1 Promotes M2 Type Activation and Inhibits Pyroptosis of Microglial Cells by Depressing RAC1/Nf-?B Pathway to Alleviate Inflammatory Pain

Netrin-1 (NTN-1) plays a vital role in the progress of nervous system development and inflammatory diseases. However, the role and underlying mechanism of NTN-1 in inflammatory pain (IP) are unclear. BV2 microglia were treated with LPS to mimic the cell status under IP. Adeno-associated virus carrying the NTN-1 gene (AAV-NTN-1) was used to overexpress NTN-1. Complete Freund's Adjuvant (CFA)-induced mouse was recruited as an in vivo model. MTT and commercial kits were utilized to evaluate cell viability and cell death of BV2 cells. The mRNA expressions and secretions of cytokines were measured using the ELISA method. Also, the pyroptosis and activation of BV2 cells were investigated based on western blotting. To verify the role of Rac1/NF-kappaB signaling, isochamaejasmin (ISO) and AAV-Rac1 were presented. The results showed that NTN-1 expression was decreased in LPS-treated BV2 microglia and spinal cord tissues of CFA-injected mice. Overexpressing NTN-1 dramatically reversed cell viability and decreased cell death rate of BV2 microglia under lipopolysaccharide (LPS) stimulation, while the level of pyroptosis was inhibited. Besides, AAV-NTN-1 rescued the activation of microglia and inflammatory injury induced by LPS, decreasing IBA-1 expression, as well as iNOS, IL-1beta and IL-6 secretions. Meanwhile AAV-NTN-1 promoted the anti-inflammation response, including increases in Arg-1, IL-4 and IL-10 levels. In addition, the LPS-induced activation of Rac1/NF-kappaB signaling was depressed by NTN-1 overexpression. The same results were verified in a CFA-induced mouse model. In conclusion, NTN-1 alleviated IP by suppressing pyroptosis and promoting M2 type activation of microglia via inhibiting Rac1/NF-?B signaling, suggesting the protective role of NTN-1 in IP. Metabolite and protein shifts in mature erythrocyte under hypoxia

As the only cell type responsible for oxygen delivery, erythrocytes play a crucial role in supplying oxygen to hypoxic tissues, ensuring their normal functions. Hypoxia commonly occurs under physiological or pathological conditions, and understanding how erythrocytes adapt to hypoxia is fundamental for exploring the mechanisms of hypoxic diseases. Additionally, investigating acute and chronic mountain sickness caused by plateaus, which are naturally hypoxic environments, will aid in the study of hypoxic diseases. In recent years, increasingly developed proteomics and metabolomics technologies have become powerful tools for studying mature enucleated erythrocytes, which has significantly contributed to clarifying how hypoxia affects erythrocytes. The aim of this article is to summarize the composition of the cytoskeleton and cytoplasmic proteins of hypoxia-altered erythrocytes and explore the impact of hypoxia on their essential functions. Furthermore, we discuss the role of microRNAs in the adaptation of erythrocytes to hypoxia, providing new perspectives on hypoxia-related diseases.

Toxic mechanism in Daphnia magna due to phthalic acid esters and CuO nanoparticles co-exposure: The insight of physiological, microbiomic and metabolomic profiles

Various phthalic acid esters (PAEs) such as dibutyl phthalate (DBP) and butyl benzyl phthalate (BBP) co-exist with nanopollutants in aquatic environment. In this study, Daphnia magna was exposed to nano-CuO and DBP or BBP at environmental relevant concentrations for 21-days to investigate these combined toxic effects. Acute EC50 values (48 h) of nano-CuO, DBP, and BBP were 12.572 mg/L, 8.978 mg/L, and 4.785 mg/L, respectively. Results showed that co-exposure with nano-CuO (500 μg/L) for 21 days significantly enhanced the toxicity of DBP (100 μg/L) and BBP (100 μg/L) to Daphnia magna by 18.37% and 18.11%, respectively. The activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione S-transferase were enhanced by 10.95% and 14.07%, 25.63% and 25.91%, and 39.93% and 35.01% in nano-CuO+DBP and nano-CuO+BBP treatments as compared to the individual exposure groups, verifying that antioxidative defense responses were activated. Furthermore, the co-exposure of nano-CuO and PAEs decreased the population richness and diversity microbiota, and changed the microbial community composition in Daphnia magna. Metabolomic analysis elucidated that nano-CuO + PAEs exposure induced stronger disturbance on metabolic network and molecular function, including amino acid, nucleotides, and lipid metabolism-related metabolic pathways, as comparison to PAEs single exposure treatments. In summary, the integration of physiological, microflora, and untargeted metabolomics analysis offers a fresh perspective into the potential ecological risk associated with nanopollutants and phthalate pollution in aquatic ecosystems.

Fixed-Time Rigidity-Based Formation Maneuvering for Nonholonomic Multirobot Systems With Prescribed Performance

This article presents rigidity-based formation maneuvering for a group of nonholonomic mobile robots subject to limited sensing capability, where the performance bounds are introduced to constrain the distance and angle errors. The time-varying and asymmetric performance constraints can prescribe the transient and steady-state performance of the closed-loop systems, which further specify collision avoidance and connectivity maintenance among neighboring robots and avoid the controller singularity issue. To satisfy the constraint requirements and fixed-time convergence, universal barrier Lyapunov functions are incorporated with control design such that angle errors are fixed-time stable and distance errors can converge to a small neighborhood around zero in fixed time. Under the proposed control protocol, all robots can track the desired time-varying velocity while generating and maintaining the predefined formation defined by a minimally and infinitesimally rigid graph. Simulation and experiment studies are carried out to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed control protocol.

Oral Curcumin-Thioketal-Inulin Conjugate Micelles against Radiation-Induced Enteritis

Radiation-induced enteritis is an unavoidable complication associated with pelvic tumor radiotherapy, significantly influencing the prognosis of cancer patients. The limited availability of commercial gastrointestinal radioprotectors in clinical settings poses a substantial challenge in preventing radiation enteritis. Despite the inherent radioprotective characteristics of Cur in vitro, its poor solubility in water, instability, and low bioavailability lead to inferior therapeutic effects in vivo. Herein, we developed novel ROS-responsive micelles (CTI) from inulin and curcumin, aimed at mitigating radiation enteritis. CTI micelles had excellent solubility and stability. Importantly, CTI improved the cytotoxicity and bioavailability of curcumin, thereby showing enhanced effectiveness in neutralizing ROS induced by radiation, safeguarding against DNA damage, and reducing radiation-induced cellular mortality. Moreover, in a radiation enteritis mice model, CTI not only alleviated severe radiation-induced intestinal injury but also improved redox-related indicators and reduced inflammatory cytokine expression. Furthermore, CTI effectively increased gut microbiota abundance and maintained gut homeostasis. In conclusion, CTI could be a promising candidate for the clinical management of radiation enteritis. Our study provides a new perspective for radioprotection using natural antioxidants.

Sleeve gastrectomy links the attenuation of diabetic kidney disease to the inhibition of renal tubular ferroptosis through down-regulating TGF-β1/Smad3 signaling pathway

PURPOSE

To investigate how sleeve gastrectomy (SG), a typical operation of bariatric surgery, attenuated symptom, and progression of diabetic kidney disease (DKD).

METHODS

DKD model was induced by high-fat diet (HFD) combined with streptozocin in Wistar rats. SG was performed, and the group subjected to sham surgery served as control. The animals were euthanized 12 weeks after surgery, followed by sample collection for the subsequent experiment. The HK-2, a renal proximal tubular epithelial cell line derived from human, was utilized to investigate the potential mechanisms.

RESULTS

SG improved metabolic parameters and glucose homeostasis, and could alleviate DKD in terms of renal function indices as well as histological and morphological structures in DM rats, accompanied with a significant reduction in renal tubular injury. Compared with sham group, SG reduced the renal tubular ferroptosis. To further clarify the mechanism involved, in vitro experiments were performed. In the presence of high glucose, renal tubular TGF-β1 secretion was significantly increased in HK-2 cell line, which led to activation of ferroptosis through TGF-β1/Smad3 signaling pathway. Inhibition of TGF-β1 receptor and phosphorylation of Smad3 significantly ameliorated TGF-β1-mediated ferroptosis. In vivo experiments also found that SG improved the hyperglycemic environment, reduced renal TGF-β1 concentrations, and down-regulated the TGF-β1/Smad3 signaling pathway.

CONCLUSIONS

With the capacity to lower the glucose, SG could attenuate the ferroptosis by inhibiting TGF-β1/Smad3 signaling pathway in DKD rats, and eventually attenuated DKD.

Deficiency of peripheral CLA+ Tregs and clinical relevance in Behcet's syndrome

BACKGROUND

Autoimmune responses have been suggested to involvement in patients with Behcet's syndrome (BS). There has been growing attention towards the roles of cutaneous lymphocyte antigen (CLA)+ regular T cells (Tregs) in autoimmune diseases. The role of CLA+ Tregs in BS is still uncertain. This study aims to clarify the impact of CLA+ Tregs on BS.

METHODS

We collected peripheral blood from a total of 107 patients with BS and 114 healthy controls (HCs). The number of CLA+ Tregs, natural killer (NK) cells, B cells, and several subtypes of CD4+ T cells were detected using flow cytometry and compared between patients and HCs.

RESULTS

The absolute number and proportion of CLA+ Tregs among CD4+ T lymphocytes and CD4+ Tregs were lower in patients with BS than in HCs. CLA+ Tregs were positively related with NK cells (r = 0.500, P < 0.001) and B cells (r = 0.470, P < 0.001) and negatively related with effector T cells (r=-0.402, P < 0.001) in patients with BS. Patients with BS and arterial aneurysms had CLA+ Treg cell deficiency. A decreased proportion of CLA+ Tregs was associated with arterial aneurysms in patients with BS. The proportion of CLA+ Tregs in patients with BS increased with corticosteroids and immunosuppressants.

CONCLUSION

CLA+ Tregs decrease in association with arterial aneurysm in patients with BS. CLA+ Tregs may be a predictor of response to BS treatment.

The feasibility of dexmedetomidine-led anesthesia maintenance strategy during major abdominal surgery

Background

Dexmedetomidine is known for its selective action on α2-adrenoceptor sites and is recognized for its neuroprotective capabilities. It can improve postoperative cognitive function. Commonly used anesthetics, such as sevoflurane and propofol, have been reported to affect postoperative cognitive function. Therefore, it could be valuable to explore dexmedetomidine-led anesthesia strategy. This study was designed to assess the performance, safety, and effective infusion rate in anesthesia maintenance, to explore a feasible dexmedetomidine-led anesthesia maintenance protocol, and to provide a foundation for potential combined anesthesia.

Methods

Thirty patients aged 18-60 years, classified as ASA I or II, undergoing abdominal surgery were involved. The anesthesia maintenance was achieved with dexmedetomidine, remifentanil and rocuronium. Dixon up-and-down sequential methodology was utilized to ascertain the ED50 of dexmedetomidine for maintaining Patient State Index (PSI) 25-40 (depth of stage III anesthesia). Intraoperative HR, BP and depth of anesthesia were monitored and controlled. The wake-up time from anesthesia, the incidence of intraoperative awareness and postoperative delirium, and the patients' satisfaction were assessed.

Results

The results indicated that dexmedetomidine-led anesthesia could maintain the depth of stage III anesthesia during abdominal surgery. The ED50 and ED95 of dexmedetomidine infusion rates during anesthesia maintenance were 2.298 μg/kg·h (95%CI: 2.190-2.404 μg/kg·h) and 3.765 μg/kg·h (95%CI: 3.550-4.050 μg/kg·h). Continuous infusion of dexmedetomidine and 0.1-0.3 μg/kg·min remifentanil could maintain PSI 25-40, and provide appropriate anesthesia depth for abdominal surgery. Perioperative bradycardia and hypertension could be rapidly corrected with atropine and nitroglycerin. The median wake-up time after anesthesia was 4.8 min, the perioperative maximum HR had significant correlation with wake-up time and intraoperative dexmedetomidine dose. No intraoperative awareness and postoperative delirium occurred; the patients were satisfied with dexmedetomidine-led anesthesia.

Conclusions

dexmedetomidine-led strategy could maintain stable depth of anesthesia throughout surgery, and the ED50 of dexmedetomidine infusion rates was 2.298 μg/kg·h. Intraoperative HR, BP and depth of anesthesia require monitoring, the bradycardia and hypertension could be rapidly corrected.

An N-Shaped Lightweight Network with a Feature Pyramid and Hybrid Attention for Brain Tumor Segmentation

Brain tumor segmentation using neural networks presents challenges in accurately capturing diverse tumor shapes and sizes while maintaining real-time performance. Additionally, addressing class imbalance is crucial for achieving accurate clinical results. To tackle these issues, this study proposes a novel N-shaped lightweight network that combines multiple feature pyramid paths and U-Net architectures. Furthermore, we ingeniously integrate hybrid attention mechanisms into various locations of depth-wise separable convolution module to improve efficiency, with channel attention found to be the most effective for skip connections in the proposed network. Moreover, we introduce a combination loss function that incorporates a newly designed weighted cross-entropy loss and dice loss to effectively tackle the issue of class imbalance. Extensive experiments are conducted on four publicly available datasets, i.e., UCSF-PDGM, BraTS 2021, BraTS 2019, and MSD Task 01 to evaluate the performance of different methods. The results demonstrate that the proposed network achieves superior segmentation accuracy compared to state-of-the-art methods. The proposed network not only improves the overall segmentation performance but also provides a favorable computational efficiency, making it a promising approach for clinical applications.

Superaerophilic/Superaerophobic NiFe-LDHs Electrode for Enhancing Overall Water Splitting in Alkaline Media

Overall water splitting, as a critical approach to producing green hydrogen, is greatly impeded by the mass transfer of gaseous bubbles and dissolved gas molecules. Herein, a bifunctional superaerophilic/superaerophobic (SAL/SAB) NiFe layered-double-hydroxides (LDHs) electrode has been developed, which can drive H2 and O2 bubbles out of the reaction system by asymmetric Laplace pressure and accelerate dissolved gases diffusion through reducing their diffusion distance. Consequently, the SAL/SAB NiFe-LDHs electrode exhibits excellent HER activity with an overpotential of -76 mV at -10 mA cm-2 and outstanding oxygen evolution reaction activity with an overpotential of 253 mV at 100 mA cm-2. The bifunctional SAL/SAB NiFe-LDHs electrode is further utilized in overall water splitting, which can achieve 10 mA cm-2 with a cell voltage of 1.54 V. This work provides an efficient strategy to improve the efficiency of overall water splitting and can stimulate new electrode design in various gas-involved processes.

Unveiling the significance of TREM1/2 in hemorrhagic stroke: structure, function, and therapeutic implications

Stroke has long been a major threat to human health worldwide. Hemorrhagic stroke, including intracerebral hemorrhage and subarachnoid hemorrhage, exhibits a high incidence rate and a high mortality and disability rate, imposing a substantial burden on both public health and the economy and society. In recent years, the triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells (TREM) family has garnered extensive attention in various pathological conditions, including hemorrhagic stroke. This review comprehensively summarizes the structure and function of TREM1/2, as well as their roles and potential mechanisms in hemorrhagic stroke, with the aim of providing guidance for the development of targeted therapeutic strategies in the future.

Multifunctional polylactic acid sensing fabric based on biomass flame retardants for intelligent fire early-warning

Today, building materials emit many hazardous gases in the event of a fire, causing great harm to human health and the environment. Therefore, it is of great significance to develop bio-based flame retardant materials and to realize preventive measures to reduce fires or their damage. In this work, we fabricated a novel multifunctional fire early-warning polylactic acid-based fabric (MFR-PBF) by coating MXene nanosheet, phytic acid @ furfurylamine (PA@FA) and ammonium polyphosphate (APP) via an eco-friendly layer-by-layer assembly method. MFR-PBF showed outstanding flame retardancy including a limiting oxygen index value of 35 % and better char formation capacity. More importantly, MFR-PBF exhibited sensitive fire early-warning capability (∼1 s) and excellent cyclic alarm stability (>15 cycles) due to the excellent semiconductor responsiveness (light and heat) and the significant catalytic char formation effect. Moreover, MFR-PBF is comfortable, flexible and strong enough to sew onto firefighter uniform to detect a variety of human motions, which can be monitored in the internet by using a LoRa emitter and a gateway. In addition, the controllable heating performance rendered MFR-PBF as a potential portable heater. This work provides new insights into the preparation and application of intelligent fire early-warning fabrics in the smart fire protection and Internet of Things.

Reconstitution of RNA cap methylation reveals different features of SARS-CoV-2 and SARS-CoV methyltransferases

Cap RNA methylations play important roles in the replication, evasion of host RNA sensor recognition, and pathogenesis. Coronaviruses possess both guanine N7- and 2'-O-ribose methyltransferases (N7-MTase and 2'-O-MTase) encoded by nonstructural protein (nsp) 14 and nsp16/10 complex, respectively. In this study, we reconstituted the two-step RNA methylations of N7-MTase and 2'-O-MTase of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in vitro and demonstrated its common and different features in comparison with that of SARS-CoV. We revealed that the nsp16/10 2'-O-MTase of SARS-CoV-2 has a broader substrate selectivity than the counterpart of SARS-CoV and can accommodate both unmethylated and uncapped RNA substrates in a sequence-independent manner. Most intriguingly, the substrate selectivity of nsp16/10 complex is not determined by the apoenzyme of nsp16 MTase but by its cofactor nsp10. These results provide insight into the unique features of SARS-CoV-2 MTases and may help develop strategies to precisely intervene in the methylation pathway and pathogenesis of SARS-CoV-2.

Effects of small-dose S-ketamine on anesthesia-induced atelectasis in patients undergoing general anesthesia accessed by lung ultrasound: study protocol for a randomized, double-blinded controlled trial

BACKGROUND

Atelectasis after anesthesia induction in most patients undergoing general anesthesia may lead to postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs) and affect postoperative outcomes. However, there is still no existing effective method used for the prevention of perioperative atelectasis. S-ketamine may prevent atelectasis due to airway smooth muscle relaxation and anti-inflammatory effects. Lung ultrasound is a portable and reliable bedside imaging technology for diagnosing anesthesia-induced atelectasis. The primary objective of this study is to assess whether a small dose of S-ketamine can reduce the incidence of atelectasis after intubation, and further investigate the effects of preventing the early formation of perioperative atelectasis and PPCs.

METHODS

This is a single-institution, prospective, randomized controlled, parallel grouping, and double-blind study. From October 2020 to March 2022, 100 patients (18-60 years old) scheduled for elective surgery will be recruited from Beijing Tiantan Hospital, Capital Medical University, and randomly assigned to the S-ketamine group (group 1) and the normal saline group (group 2) at a ratio of 1:1. The label-masked agents will be administered 5 min before induction, and all patients will undergo a standardized general anesthesia protocol. Related data will be collected at three time points: after radial artery puncture (T1), 15 min after tracheal intubation (T2), and before extubation (T3). The primary outcome will be the total lung ultrasound scores (LUS) at T2. Secondary outcomes will include LUS in six chest regions at T2, total LUS at T3, arterial blood gas analysis results (PaCO2, PaO2) and PaO2/FiO2 at T2 and T3, and plateau pressure (Pplat) and dynamic lung compliance (Cdyn) at T2 and T3. The incidence of postoperative complications associated with S-ketamine and PPCs at 2 h and 24 h after surgery will be recorded.

DISCUSSION

This trial aims to explore whether a simple and feasible application of S-ketamine before the induction of general anesthesia can prevent atelectasis. The results of this study may provide new ideas and direct clinical evidence for the prevention and treatment of perioperative pulmonary complications during anesthesia.

Characterization of Four Complete Mitogenomes of Monolepta Species and Their Related Phylogenetic Implications

Monolepta is one of the diverse genera in the subfamily Galerucinae, including 708 species and 6 sub-species worldwide. To explore the information on the mitogenome characteristics and phylogeny of the section "Monoleptites", especially the genus Monolepta, we obtained the newly completed mitochondrial genomes (mitogenomes) of four Monolepta species using high-throughput sequencing technology. The lengths of these four new mitochondrial genomes are 16,672 bp, 16,965 bp, 16,012 bp, and 15,866 bp in size, respectively. All four mitochondrial genomes include 22 transfer RNA genes (tRNAs), 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 2 ribosomal RNA genes (rRNAs), and one control region, which is consistent with other Coleoptera. The results of the nonsynonymous with synonymous substitution rates showed that ND6 had the highest evolution rate, while COI displayed the lowest evolution rate. The substitution saturation of three datasets (13 PCGs_codon1, 13 PCGs_codon2, 13 PCGs_codon3) showed that there was no saturation across all datasets. Phylogenetic analyses based on three datasets (ND1, 15 genes of mitogenomes, and 13 PCGs_AA) were carried out using maximum likelihood (ML) and Bayesian inference (BI) methods. The results showed that mitogenomes had a greater capacity to resolve the main clades than the ND1 gene at the suprageneric and species levels. The section "Monoleptites" was proven to be a monophyletic group, while Monolepta was a non-monophyletic group. Based on ND1 data, the newly sequenced species whose antennal segment 2 was shorter than 3 were split into several clades, while, based on the mitogenomic dataset, the four newly sequenced species had close relationships with Paleosepharia. The species whose antennal segment 2 was as long as 3 were split into two clades, which indicated that the characteristic of "antennal segment 2 as long as 3" of the true "Monolepta" evolved multiple times in several subgroups. Therefore, to explore the relationships among the true Monolepta, the most important thing is to perform a thorough revision of Monolepta and related genera in the future.

Electrolyte Additives for Stable Zn Anodes

Zn-ion batteries are regarded as the most promising batteries for next-generation, large-scale energy storage because of their low cost, high safety, and eco-friendly nature. The use of aqueous electrolytes results in poor reversibility and leads to many challenges related to the Zn anode. Electrolyte additives can effectively address many such challenges, including dendrite growth and corrosion. This review provides a comprehensive introduction to the major challenges in and current strategies used for Zn anode protection. In particular, an in-depth and fundamental understanding is provided of the various functions of electrolyte additives, including electrostatic shielding, adsorption, in situ solid electrolyte interphase formation, enhancing water stability, and surface texture regulation. Potential future research directions for electrolyte additives used in aqueous Zn-ion batteries are also discussed.

Characterization of striatal dopamine projections across striatal subregions in behavioral flexibility

Behavioural flexibility is key to survival in a dynamic environmentWhile flexible, goal-directed behaviours are initially dependent on dorsomedial striatum, they become dependent on lateral striatum as behaviours become inflexible. Similarly, lesions of dopamine terminals in lateral striatum disrupt the development of inflexible habits. This work suggests that dopamine release in lateral striatum may drive inflexible behaviours, though few studies have investigated a causative role of subpopulations of striatal dopamine terminals in reversal learning, a measure of flexibility. Here, we performed two optogenetic experiments to activate dopamine terminals in dorsomedial (DMS), dorsolateral (DLS) or ventral (nucleus accumbens [NAc]) striatum in DAT-Cre mice that expressed channelrhodopsin-2 via viral injection (Experiment I) or through transgenic breeding with an Ai32 reporter line (Experiment II) to determine how specific dopamine subpopulations impact reversal learning. Mice performed a reversal task in which they self-stimulated DMS, DLS, or NAc dopamine terminals by pressing one of two levers before action-outcome lever contingencies were reversed. Largely consistent with presumed ventromedial/lateral striatal function, we found that mice self-stimulating medial dopamine terminals reversed lever preference following contingency reversal, while mice self-stimulating NAc showed parial flexibility, and DLS self-stimulation resulted in impaired reversal. Impairments in DLS mice were characterized by more regressive errors and reliance on lose-stay strategies following reversal, as well as reduced within-session learning, suggesting reward insensitivity and overreliance on previously learned actions. This study supports a model of striatal function in which DMS and ventral dopamine facilitate goal-directed responding, and DLS dopamine supports more inflexible responding.

Interfacial Water-Dictated Oil Adhesion Based on Ion Modulation

Oil adhesion on ionic surfaces is ubiquitous in organisms and natural environments and is generally determined by surface chemical component and texture. However, when adhesion occurs, water molecules at the solid-liquid interface, acting as a bridge not only influenced by the structure and composition of the solid surface but also interacting with the neighboring oil molecules, play a crucial role but are always overlooked. Herein, we investigate the oil adhesion process on a carboxyl-terminated self-assembled monolayer surface (COOH-SAM) in ionic solutions and observe the interfacial water structure via surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) in this system. It is found that the lower the tetracoordinated water content, the stronger the oil adhesion. Compared to monovalent ions, the strengthened binding of multivalent ions to the COOH-SAM surface makes the interfacial water more disordered, which eventually leads to a stronger oil adhesion. Notably, the amount of oil adhesion decreases with an increase in the thickness of the interfacial water region. The interfacial water-dictated oil adhesion has been demonstrated in capillary to simulate the water-driven oil recovery, providing a molecular-level explanation for enhanced oil recovery from low salinity water flooding and also indicating potential applications in intelligent microfluidic and seawater desalination.

An interplay between bZIP16, bZIP68, and GBF1 regulates nuclear photosynthetic genes during photomorphogenesis in Arabidopsis

The development of a seedling into a photosynthetically active plant is a crucial process. Despite its importance, we do not fully understand the regulatory mechanisms behind the establishment of functional chloroplasts. We herein provide new insight into the early light response by identifying the function of three basic region/leucine zipper (bZIP) transcription factors: bZIP16, bZIP68, and GBF1. These proteins are involved in the regulation of key components required for the establishment of photosynthetically active chloroplasts. The activity of these bZIPs is dependent on the redox status of a conserved cysteine residue, which provides a mechanism to finetune light-responsive gene expression. The blue light cryptochrome (CRY) photoreceptors provide one of the major light-signaling pathways, and bZIP target genes overlap with one-third of CRY-regulated genes with an enrichment for photosynthesis/chloroplast-associated genes. bZIP16, bZIP68, and GBF1 were demonstrated as novel interaction partners of CRY1. The interaction between CRY1 and bZIP16 was stimulated by blue light. Furthermore, we demonstrate a genetic link between the bZIP proteins and cryptochromes as the cry1cry2 mutant is epistatic to the cry1cry2bzip16bzip68gbf1 mutant. bZIP16, bZIP68, and GBF1 regulate a subset of photosynthesis associated genes in response to blue light critical for a proper greening process in Arabidopsis.

Long-Term Anorectal Function in Rectal Cancer Patients Managed by a Watch-and-Wait Strategy after Neoadjuvant Therapy: A Cross-Sectional Study

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE(S)

Rectal cancer patients reaching complete clinical response (cCR) after neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy can be offered a nonoperative watch-and-wait (W&W) strategy. As evidence of good oncological outcomes accumulates, the functional outcomes remain less explored. The aim of this study is to comprehensively assess the long-term rectal toxicity and anorectal function in patients managed by a W&W strategy and to investigate the clinical risk factors for anorectal dysfunction.

MATERIALS/METHODS

Seventy W&W patients who were disease-free at the moment of recruitment were included. A minimum 2-year follow-up was considered. We graded late rectal toxicity according to the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group/European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (RTOG/EORTC) scale and the Late Effects of Normal Tissue/Subjective Objective Management Analytic (LENT/SOMA) system. Long-term anorectal function was assessed with the Wexner score, the Low Anterior Resection Syndrome score (LARS score), and the Memorial Sloan Kettering Bowel Function Instrument (MSK BFI).

RESULTS

All patients received standard chemoradiotherapy consisting of a total dose of 5000 cGy in 25 fractions. The median tumor distance from the anal verge was 3 (IQR 2-4) cm. After a median follow-up of 43 (IQR 28-66) months, less than half of patients developed Grade 1 (40.0%) or Grade 2 (1.4%) late rectal toxicity, and no patients complained of higher grades. LENT/SOMA criteria also identified more patients with mild symptoms. The most frequent symptoms were sphincter control problems, mainly manifested as fecal urgency, reported by 60.0% of patients. For long-term anorectal function, the median LARS score was 16 (IQR 4-25). 17.1% of patients reported minor LARS and 15.7% reported major LARS. The median Wexner score was 2 (IQR 0-3). The median MSK BFI total score was 82 (IQR 77-86). Smoking history was an independent risk factor for anorectal dysfunction in multivariate analyses (OR = 6.491, 95% CI 1.536-27.432).

CONCLUSION

Rectal cancer patients managed by a watch-and-wait strategy after neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy have retained satisfactory anorectal function. However, fecal urgency might be a common problem. Smoking history was an independent risk factor for long-term anorectal dysfunction. Prospective studies with emphasis on bowel function outcomes containing a larger number of patients are needed.

Highly efficient metal-organic framework based intumescent poly(L-lactic acid) towards fire safety, ignition delay and UV resistance

Developing multifunctional biodegradable PLA with ignition delay, high efficient fire retardancy, and UV resistance properties is a challenging task owing to its high flammability, and mutually exclusive phenomenon between the latter two properties. In this work, we report a superior efficient synergistic action combining piperazine pyrophosphate (PAPP) and a Co based metal-organic framework (ZIF-67). Results illustrated that with merely 0.06 wt% ZIF-67, intumescent PLA containing 4.96 wt% PAPP reached UL-94 V0 rating. The PLA/4.9PAPP/0.1MOF sample possessed a limiting oxygen index (LOI) value at 33 %, exhibited a 28 % reduction in peak heat release rate (pHRR) and a 67 % increase in fire propagation index (FPI). Moreover, the presence MOF delayed the ignition time of PLA by 12 s due to the highly porous structure of MOF and its chemical heat-sink performance. Insightful reaction to fire mechanism in the condensed phase via TG-FTIR and Raman revealed that a crack free protective intumescent char layer with higher graphitization degree was formed, which effectively enhanced the barrier effect and minimize the heat and fuel transfer. In addition, the UV resistance of PLA composites is enhanced, remaining at and below 5 % transmittance in the UVA and UVB areas. This work provides a green production way of multifunctional degradable materials and broadens their application fields.

Conversion of Surface Residual Alkali to Solid Electrolyte to Enable Na-Ion Full Cells with Robust Interfaces

The deposition of volatilized Na+ on the surface of the cathode during sintering results in the formation of surface residual alkali (NaOH/Na2 CO3 NaHCO3 ) in layered cathode materials, leading to serious interfacial reactions and performance degradation. This phenomenon is particularly evident in O3-NaNi0.4 Cu0.1 Mn0.4 Ti0.1 O2 (NCMT). In this study, a strategy is proposed to transform waste into treasure by converting residual alkali into a solid electrolyte. Mg(CH3 COO)2 and H3 PO4 are reacted with surface residual alkali to generate the solid electrolyte NaMgPO4 on the surface of NCMT, which can be labeled as NaMgPO4@NaNi0.4 Cu0.1 Mn0.4 Ti0.1 O2 -X (NMP@NCMT-X, where X indicates the different amounts of Mg2+ and PO4 3- ). NaMgPO4 acts as a special ionic conductivity channel on the surface to improve the kinetics of the electrode reactions, remarkably improving the rate capability of the modified cathode at a high current density in the half-cell. Additionally, NMP@NCMT-2 enables a reversible phase transition from the P3 to OP2 phase in the charge-discharge process above 4.2 V and achieves a high specific capacity of 157.3 mAh g-1 and outstanding capacity retention in the full cell. The strategy can effectively and reliably stabilize the interface and improve the performance of layered cathodes for Na-ion batteries (NIBs).

Fabrication of 2D/1D Bi2WO6/halloysite nanotubes photocatalyst towards water purification: a support effect onin situconstruction and electron-hole separation

In this research work, a reusable and efficient 2D/1D heterogeneous structured photocatalyst based on amine-functionalized halloysite nanotubes (MHNTs) and Bi2WO6nanosheet (BWO) was prepared using a facile hydrothermal method for decomposing PPCPs under simulated sunlight. On the degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH), the effects of composite catalysts prepared under various conditions were discussed. The results showed that over BWO/MHNTs with a mass ratio was 3:1, the synthesizing temperature was 120 °C and the precursor pH value was 1, the TCH (10 mg l-1) degradation efficiency reached 100% after 1 h irradiation of simulated sunlight. Moreover, BWO/MHNTs composites kept good recovery and stable photocatalytic activity after 5 cycles. The excellent dispersion of Bi2WO6on the surface of clay minerals and the oxygen vacancy enhanced electron-hole separation may be responsible for the its high activity and stability. Futhermore, the radical capture test demonstrated that ·O-2was primarily responsible for the photodegradation of TCH. Thus, BWO/MHNTs composites exhibit a good application prospect in the field of sunlight-driven photocatalytic degradation towards PPCPs pollutants in water.

[Normative wideband absorbance measures in children: a cross-sectional study]

Objective: This study was to investigate the main characteristics and related factors of wideband absorbance (WBA) in children with normal hearing and to obtain age-specific reference range of WBA. Methods: 384 children between 0-12 years old (615 ears) who visited the Beijing Children's Hospital, Capital Medical University from October 2019 to February 2021 were enrolled, including 230 males (376 ears) and 154 females (239 ears), with totally 306 left ears and 309 right ears. Wideband tympanometry (WBT) was performed and normative WBA data were analyzed by SPSS 24.0 statistical software. Repeated measures and multivariate analysis of variance were applied to the data from 16 points at 1/3-octave frequencies (226, 324, 408, 500, 667, 841, 1 000, 1 297, 1 682, 2 000, 2 670, 3 364, 4 000, 5 339, 6 727 and 8 000 Hz) to evaluate the effects of frequency, age, external auditory canal pressures, gender and ear on WBA. Results: According to the WBT frequency-absorbance curve, the subjects were divided into seven groups: 1-month old group, 2-month old group, 3-month old group, 4-5 month old group, 6-24 month old group,>2-6 year old group and>6-12 year old group. The WBA of normal-hearing children underwent a series of developmental changes with age at both ambient pressure and tympanometric peak pressures. WBA results for 1-month group and 2-month old group exhibited a multipeaked pattern, with the peaks occurring around 2 000 and 4 897 Hz, and a notch around 3 886 Hz. WBA results for 3-month group and 4-5 month old group exhibited a single broad-peaked pattern, with the peak occurring between 2 000-4 757 Hz. The WBA of 1-month old group to 4-5 month old group decreased gradually at low frequency (226-408 Hz) and 6 727 Hz, and increased at middle to high frequency (2 670-4 000 Hz). The WBA of 6-24 month old group were significantly lower than that of 2-month old group to 4-5 month old group at all frequencies except 3 364 and 4 000 Hz. WBA results for 6-24 month old group,>2-6 year old group and>6-12 year old group exhibited a single-peaked pattern, and the peak frequency of WBA moved to the lower frequency successively. From 6-24 month old group to>6-12 year old group, the WBA gradually increased at low to middle frequencies (667-2 670 Hz) and 8 000 Hz, and decreased at middle to high frequencies (3 364-5 339 Hz). Among the 16 frequencies of all age groups, the difference between WBA under ambient pressure and tympanometric peak pressure were -0.09-0.06, and 43.75%-81.25% frequency points had statistically significant difference, which was mainly manifested in that WBA under ambient pressure were lower than that under tympanometric peak pressure at 226-1 682 Hz. There was no significant ear effect on all of the age groups. Similarly, there was no significant gender effect except for 3-month old group and 4-5 month old group. Conclusions: The WBA of normal-hearing children measured at ambient pressure and tympanometric peak pressure varied across the frequencies with age from 1 month to 12 years old, and different frequencies followed different change patterns (increase vs. decrease) in WBA. There was also significant external auditory canal pressures effect on all of the age groups. The establishment of age-specific reference range of WBA for 0-12 years old normal-hearing children in this study would be useful for clinical practice of determining normative data regarding WBT.

Lean-water hydrogel electrolyte for zinc ion batteries

Solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) and hydrogel electrolytes were developed as electrolytes for zinc ion batteries (ZIBs). Hydrogels can retain water molecules and provide high ionic conductivities; however, they contain many free water molecules, inevitably causing side reactions on the zinc anode. SPEs can enhance the stability of anodes, but they typically possess low ionic conductivities and result in high impedance. Here, we develop a lean water hydrogel electrolyte, aiming to balance ion transfer, anode stability, electrochemical stability window and resistance. This hydrogel is equipped with a molecular lubrication mechanism to ensure fast ion transportation. Additionally, this design leads to a widened electrochemical stability window and highly reversible zinc plating/ stripping. The full cell shows excellent cycling stability and capacity retentions at high and low current rates, respectively. Moreover, superior adhesion ability can be achieved, meeting the needs of flexible devices.

[Structural changes of the frontal cortex in depressed mice are associated with decreased expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor]

OBJECTIVE

To investigate the changes in gray matter volume in depressive-like mice and explore the possible mechanism.

METHODS

Twenty-four 6-week-old C57 mice were randomized equally into control group and model group, and the mice in the model group were subjected to chronic unpredictable mild stimulation (CUMS) for 35 days. Magnetic resonance imaging was performed to examine structural changes of the grey matter volume in depressive-like mice. The expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in the grey matter of the mice was detected using Western blotting and immunofluorescence staining.

RESULTS

Compared with the control mice, the mice with CUMS showed significantly decreased central walking distance in the open field test (P < 0.05) and increased immobile time in forced swimming test (P < 0.05). Magnetic resonance imaging showed that the volume of the frontal cortex was significantly decreased in CUMS mice (P < 0.001, when the mass level was greater than or equal to 10 756, the FDRc was corrected with P=0.05). Western blotting showed that the expression of mature BDNF in the frontal cortex was significantly decreased in CUMS mice (P < 0.05), and its expression began to decrease after the exposure to CUMS as shown by immunofluorescence staining. The volume of different clusters obtained by voxel-based morphometry (VBM) analysis was correlated with the expression level of mature BDNF detected by Western blotting (P < 0.05).

CONCLUSION

The decrease of frontal cortex volume after CUMS is related with the reduction of mature BDNF expression in the frontal cortex.

Perioperative active warming strategies in children: a protocol for a multicentre, prospective, randomized controlled trial

Introduction

Inadvertent perioperative hypothermia (IPH) refers to a core body temperature lower than 36.0 °C, which can contribute to many adverse events. The special physiological characteristics in children further increase the incidence of IPH. Therefore, it is very important to perform effective perioperative warming measures for children. Traditional passive warming measures with additional layers have limited thermal insulation effects. Active warming measures might be the better choice, and most measures have achieved good effects in adults. This study combines a variety of active warming measures to propose perioperative active warming strategies and aims to verify the feasibility and thermal insulation effects of perioperative active warming strategies in children.

Methods

This study is a multicentre, prospective, randomized controlled trial. From August 2022 to July 2024, 400 paediatric patients undergoing elective surgery will be recruited in four centres and randomly divided into the active warming strategies group and control group at a ratio of 1:1. The primary outcome is the perioperative cumulative hypothermia effect value (Σ ΔTi × Δti, i = 1…, n). Multiple complications covering the anaesthesia recovery period and postoperative hospitalization will be considered as secondary outcomes to comprehensively analyse the prognosis.

SETD7 promotes lateral plate mesoderm formation by modulating the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway

The role of SET domain containing 7 (SETD7) during human hematopoietic development remains elusive. Here, we found that deletion of SETD7 attenuated the generation of hematopoietic progenitor cells (HPCs) during the induction of hematopoietic differentiation from human embryonic stem cells (hESCs). Further analysis specified that SETD7 was required for lateral plate mesoderm (LPM) specification but dispensable for the generation of endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) and HPCs. Mechanistically, rather than depending on its histone methyltransferase activity, SETD7 interacted with β-catenin at lysine residue 180 facilitated its degradation. Diminished SETD7 expression led to the accumulation of β-catenin and the consequent activation of the Wnt signaling pathway, which altered LPM patterning and facilitated the production of paraxial mesoderm (PM). Taken together, the findings indicate that SETD7 is related to LPM and PM patterning via posttranslational regulation of the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway, providing novel insights into mesoderm specification during hematopoietic differentiation from hESCs.

Mechanism and security of UV driven sodium percarbonate for sulfamethoxazole degradation using DFT and metabolomic analysis

Recently, sodium percarbonate (SPC) as a solid substitute for H₂O₂ has aroused extensive attention in advanced oxidation processes. In current work, the degradation kinetics and mechanisms of antibiotic sulfamethoxazole (SMX) by ultraviolet (UV) driven SPC system were explored. The removal efficiency of SMX was enhanced as the increasing dosage of SPC. Moreover, hydroxyl radical (•OH), carbonate radical (CO₃^•-) and superoxide radical (O₂^•-) were verified to be presented by scavenger experiments and •OH, CO₃^•- exhibited a significant role in SMX degradation. Reactions mediated by these radicals were affected by anions and natural organic matters, implying that an incomplete mineralization of SMX would be ubiquitous. The screening four intermediates and transformation patterns of SMX were verified by DFT analysis. Metabolomic analysis demonstrated that a decreasing negative effect in E. coli after 24 h exposure was induced by intermediates products. In detail, SMX interfered in some key functional metabolic pathways including carbohydrate metabolism, pentose and glucuronate metabolism, nucleotide metabolism, arginine and proline metabolism, sphingolipid metabolism, which were mitigated after UV/SPC oxidation treatment, suggesting a declining environmental risk of SMX. This work provided new insights into biological impacts of SMX and its transformation products and vital guidance for SMX pollution control using UV/SPC technology.

Manipulating coulombic efficiency of cathodes in aqueous zinc batteries by anion chemistry

Electrolyte environments, including cations, anions, and solvents are critical for the performance delivery of cathodes of batteries. Most works focused on interactions between cations and cathode materials, in contrast, there is a lack of in-depth research on the correlation between anions and cathodes. Here, we systematically investigated how anions manipulate the coulombic efficiency (CE) of cathodes of zinc batteries. We take intercalation-type V2O5 and conversion-type I2 cathodes as typical cases for profound studies. It was found that electronic properties of anions, including charge density and its distribution, can tune conversion or intercalation reactions, leading to significant CE differences. Using operando visual Raman microscopy and theoretical simulations, we confirm that competitive coordination between anions and I- can regulate CEs by modulating polyiodide diffusion rates in Zn-I2 cells. In Zn-V2O5 cells, anion-tuned solvation structures vastly affect CEs through varying Zn2+ intercalation kinetics. Conversion I2 cathode achieves a 99% CE with highly electron-donating anions, while anions with preferable charge structures that interact strongly with Zn2+ afford an intercalation V2O5 a nearly 100% CE. Understanding the mechanism of anion-governed CEs will help us evaluate compatibility of electrolytes with electrodes, thus providing a guideline for anion selection and electrolyte design for high-energy, long-cycling zinc batteries.

Development of rechargeable high-energy hybrid zinc-iodine aqueous batteries exploiting reversible chlorine-based redox reaction

The chlorine-based redox reaction (ClRR) could be exploited to produce secondary high-energy aqueous batteries. However, efficient and reversible ClRR is challenging, and it is affected by parasitic reactions such as Cl₂ gas evolution and electrolyte decomposition. Here, to circumvent these issues, we use iodine as positive electrode active material in a battery system comprising a Zn metal negative electrode and a concentrated (e.g., 30 molal) ZnCl₂ aqueous electrolyte solution. During cell discharge, the iodine at the positive electrode interacts with the chloride ions from the electrolyte to enable interhalogen coordinating chemistry and forming ICl₃^-. In this way, the redox-active halogen atoms allow a reversible three-electrons transfer reaction which, at the lab-scale cell level, translates into an initial specific discharge capacity of 612.5 mAh g_I2^-1 at 0.5 A g_I2^-1 and 25 °C (corresponding to a calculated specific energy of 905 Wh kg_I2^-1). We also report the assembly and testing of a Zn | |Cl-I pouch cell prototype demonstrating a discharge capacity retention of about 74% after 300 cycles at 200 mA and 25 °C (final discharge capacity of about 92 mAh).

Ensemble Effect of Ruthenium Single-Atom and Nanoparticle Catalysts for Efficient Hydrogen Evolution in Neutral Media

Hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) plays a key role in electrochemical water splitting, which is a sustainable way for hydrogen production. The kinetics of HER is sluggish in neutral media that requires noble metal catalysts to alleviate energy consumption during the HER process. Here, we present a catalyst comprising a ruthenium single atom (Ru₁) and nanoparticle (Ru_n) loaded on the nitrogen-doped carbon substrate (Ru₁-Ru_n/CN), which exhibits excellent activity and superior durability for neutral HER. Benefiting from the synergistic effect between single atoms and nanoparticles in the Ru₁-Ru_n/CN, the catalyst exhibits a very low overpotential down to 32 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm^-2 while maintaining excellent stability up to 700 h at a current density of 20 mA cm^-2 during the long-term test. Computational calculations reveal that, in the Ru₁-Ru_n/CN catalyst, the existence of Ru nanoparticles affects the interactions between Ru single-atom sites and reactants and thus improves the catalytic activity of HER. This work highlights the ensemble effect of electrocatalysts for HER and could shed light on the rational design of efficient catalysts for other multistep electrochemical reactions.

Regulation of polylactic acid using irradiation and preparation of PLA-SiO2-ZnO melt-blown nonwovens for antibacterial and air filtration

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, polypropylene melt-blown nonwovens (MBs) have been widely used in disposable medical surgical masks and medical protective clothing, seriously threatening the environment. As a bio-based biodegradable polymer, polylactic acid (PLA) has attracted great attention in fabricating MBs. However, there are still issues with the undesirable spinnability of PLA and the limited filtration and antibacterial performance of PLA MBs. Herein, a high-efficiency, low-resistance, and antibacterial PLA filter is fabricated by melt-blown spinning and electret postprocessing technology. The irradiation technique is used to tune PLA chain structure, improving its spinnability. Further, silica (SiO₂) nanoparticles are added to enhance the charge storage stability of PLA MBs. With a constant airflow rate of 32 L min^-1, the PLA-based MBs exhibit a high particulate filtration efficiency of 94.8 ± 1.5%, an ultralow pressure drop of 14.1 ± 1.8 Pa, and an adequate bacterial filtration efficiency of 98 ± 1.2%, meeting the medical protective equipment standard. In addition, the zinc oxide (ZnO) masterbatches are doped into the blend and the antibacterial rate of PLA-based MBs against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus is higher than 99%. This successful preparation and modification method paves the way for the large-scale production of PLA MBs as promising candidates for high-efficacy and antibacterial filters.

Solid Interhalogen Compounds with Effective Br0 Fixing for Stable High-energy Zinc Batteries

Though massive efforts have been devoted to exploring Br-based batteries, the highly soluble Br2/Br3- species causing rigorous "shuttle effect", leads to severe self-discharge and low Coulombic efficiency. Conventionally, quaternary ammonium salts such as methyl ethyl morpholinium bromide (MEMBr) and tetrapropylammonium bromide (TPABr) are used to fix Br2 and Br3-, but they occupy the mass and volume of battery without capacity contribution. Here, we report an all-active solid interhalogen compound, IBr, as a cathode to address the above challenges, in which the oxidized Br0 is fixed by iodine (I), thoroughly eliminating cross-diffusing Br2/Br3- species during the whole charging and discharging process. The Zn||IBr battery delivers remarkably high energy density of 385.8 Wh×kg-1, which is higher than those of I2, MEMBr3, and TPABr3 cathodes. Our work provides new approaches to achieve active solid interhalogen chemistry for high-energy electrochemical energy storage devices.

Anaesthetic management of cerebral arteriovenous malformation hemorrhage during pregnancy: A case series

RATIONALE

There is no clear consensus guidance for anesthesiologists on how to manage patients with cerebral arteriovenous malformation (cAVM) rupture and hemorrhage during pregnancy who need craniotomy. Our objective was to review the anesthesia management of pregnant women who underwent resection of cAVM at our institution and to provide opinions and suggestions.

PATIENT CONCERNS

Herein, we report of 3 patients with cAVM rupture and hemorrhage during pregnancy who underwent neurosurgery at the 22nd, 28th, and 20th weeks of pregnancy.

DIAGNOSES

All 3 patients were admitted to the emergency department of our hospital due to sudden symptoms. Subsequently, their head imaging results confirmed the rupture and hemorrhage of cAVM. The rupture and hemorrhage of cAVM during pregnancy has a low incidence and high mortality, which seriously endangers the safety of the mother and fetus. For this emergency condition, craniotomy for removing intracranial lesions and clear hematoma can result in a chance of a successful delivery. Especially in the second and third trimesters of pregnancy, the management goal of anesthesia is to ensure the maternofetal safety and to maintain continuous pregnancy.

INTERVENTIONS

This article describes the process of intraoperative anesthesia management and maternal-fetal outcomes and discusses the key issues for the anesthesia management of cAVM rupture during pregnancy, including considerations of physiological changes during pregnancy and anesthesia medication, intraoperative monitoring, the maintenance of hemodynamic stability, and the control of intracranial pressure, among other considerations. Resection of intracranial lesions should be performed whenever possible while maintaining the pregnancy for better maternal and infant outcomes.

OUTCOMES

The operations of the 3 pregnant women were successfully completed under our detailed anesthesia planning and careful anesthesia management. All the patients recovered well after the operation, and underwent cesarean section to give birth smoothly.

LESSONS

The preservation of pregnancy under cAVM resection is a complex challenge for anesthesiologists, and these 3 cases provide an extensive amount of experience for anesthesia management in similar situations. Detailed anesthesia planning and careful anesthesia management by anesthesiologists are important guarantees for good maternal and fetal outcomes.

Photocatalysis of carbamazepine via activating bisulfite by ultraviolet: Performance, transformation mechanism, and residual toxicity assessment of intermediates products

Carbamazepine (CBZ) as an extensively distributed emerging pollutant has menaced ecological security. The degradation performance of CBZ by UV driven bisulfite process was investigated in this work. The kinetics results indicated that CBZ was high-efficiently degraded by UV/bisulfite following a pseudo first-order kinetic model (K_obs = 0.0925 min^-1). SO₄^•- and •OH were verified as the reactive oxidants by EPR test and the radicals scavenging experiment using MeOH and TBA. SO₄^•- played a dominant role for CBZ degradation. The Density functional theory (DFT) and LC-qTOF-MS/MS clarified that hydroxylation, ketonation, ring opening reaction, and ring contraction were main transformation patterns of CBZ. As to influence factors, CBZ degradation was significantly hindered in presence of CO₃^2-, HPO₄^2- and NOM. Toxicological analysis derived from metabonomics suggested that the remarkable alteration of metabolic profile was triggered by exposure to intermediates mixture. CBZ intermediates interfered in several key metabolic pathways, including pentose phosphate, amino acids, lysine degradation, glycerophospholipid, glutathione, nucleotides and carbohydrate, which was alleviated after UV/bisulfite treatment. This work provided a meaningful support to potential risk of CBZ intermediates products, which shed light on the future application in eliminating drugs using UV /bisulfite.

Effects of Clostridium butyricum on growth performance, meat quality, and intestinal health of broilers

This study investigated the effects of Clostridium butyricum on the growth performance, meat quality and intestinal health of broilers. A total of 800 one-day-old male Arbor Acres broilers were randomly assigned to two groups with 16 replicates of 25 broilers per group and fed with a basal diet (CON) or a basal diet supplemented with 1.5 × 10⁹ cfu/kg C. butyricum and 5 × 10⁸ cfu/kg C. butyricum at 1-21 d and 22-42 d, respectively (CB). The results indicated that C. butyricum significantly increased the final body weight, average daily gain at 1-42 d in the growth performance of broilers (P < 0.05). Moreover, C. butyricum significantly increased a 24 h * value and pH_24h value of breast meat but reduced the drip loss and shear force (P < 0.05). Regarding serum antioxidant indices, C. butyricum significantly increased the total superoxide dismutase (T-SOD) and total antioxidative capacity activities and reduced the malondialdehyde content (P < 0.05). Furthermore, the broilers in the CB demonstrated an increase in jejunal lipase and trypsin activities, villus height (VH) and VH-to-crypt depth ratio at 42 d compared with those in the CON (P < 0.05). C. butyricum also upregulated the intestinal mRNA levels of zonula occludens-1, nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), SOD1 and interleukin-10 in the jejunal mucosa (P < 0.05), but it downregulated the mRNA levels of nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) and tumor necrosis factor-α (P < 0.05). These results indicate that C. butyricum can improve the growth performance and meat quality of broilers. In particular, C. butyricum can improve the intestinal health of broilers, which is likely to be related to the activation of the Nrf2 signaling pathway and inhibition of the NF-κB signaling pathway.
