Trajectory of pain threshold and its association with acute pain after thoracic surgery: a prospective observational study. J Cardiothorac Surg 2023; 18:326. Abstract
BACKGROUND Postoperative analgesic management is an ongoing challenge. The pain threshold (PT) is an objective index that reflects the body's sensitivity to pain and can be used for quantitative pain assessment. We hypothesized that the PT is correlated with postoperative pain and can thus be used to guide postoperative pain management. METHODS This study involved 93 patients who underwent thoracoscopic surgery from December 2019 to February 2020. The PT was measured with transcutaneous electrical stimulation before surgery (T0) and at 1 h (T1), 6 h (T6), and 24 h (T24) after surgery. The visual analogue scale (VAS) score was used to evaluate the severity of postoperative pain at the same time. The PT variation (PTV) after surgery was calculated as the ratio of the postoperative PT to preoperative PT. RESULTS The postoperative PT was higher than the preoperative PT and showed a downward trend within 24 h after surgery; the PTV also showed a downward trend within 24 h after surgery. PT-T1 was negatively correlated with VAS-T1 at rest and during motion (rest: VAS-T1r = - 0.274, P = 0.008; motion: VAS-T1r = - 0.298, P = 0.004). PTV-T1 was negatively correlated with VAS-T1 during motion (r = - 0.213, P = 0.04). Lower VAS-T1 scores (< 4) at rest and during motion were associated with higher PT-T1 (rest: t = 2.452, P = 0.016; motion: t = 2.138, P = 0.035). The intraoperative sufentanil dose was associated with a postoperative increase in PTV-T1. Increased rescue analgesic administration was associated with PTV elevation. However, the incidence of dizziness in patients with moderate PTV-T24 was lower than that in patients with high or low PTV-T24 (χ2 = 8.297, P = 0.015). CONCLUSIONS The postoperative PT was higher than the preoperative PT and showed a downward trend within 24 h after surgery; PTV also showed a downward trend within 24 h after surgery. The PT and PTV were negatively correlated with the pain intensity at rest and during motion and were associated with perioperative analgesic consumption and the incidence of adverse events.

Abstract
Objective: To explore the diagnosis, surgical management and outcome of jugular foramen chondrosarcoma (CSA). Methods: Fifteen patients with jugular foramen CSA hospitalized in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery of Chinese PLA General Hospital from December 2002 to February 2020 were retrospectively collected,of whom 2 were male and 13 were female, aging from 22 to 61 years old. The clinical symptoms and signs, imaging features, differential diagnosis, surgical approaches, function of facial nerve and cranial nerves IX to XII, and surgical outcomes were analyzed. Results: Patients with jugular foramen CSA mainly presented with facial paralysis, hearing loss, hoarseness, cough, tinnitus and local mass. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR) could provide important information for diagnosis. CT showed irregular destruction on bone margin of the jugular foramen. MR demonstrated iso or hypointense on T1WI, hyperintense on T2WI and heterogeneous contrast-enhancement. Surgical approaches were chosen upon the sizes and scopes of the tumors. Inferior temporal fossa A approach was adopted in 12 cases, inferior temporal fossa B approach in 2 cases and mastoid combined parotid approach in 1 case. Five patients with facial nerve involved received great auricular nerve graft. The House Brackmann (H-B) grading scale was used to evaluate the facial nerve function. Preoperative facial nerve function ranked grade Ⅴ in 4 cases and grade Ⅵ in 1 case. Postoperative facial nerve function improved to grade Ⅲ in 2 cases and grade Ⅵ in 3 cases. Five patients presented with cranial nerves Ⅸ and Ⅹ palsies. Hoarseness and cough of 2 cases improved after operation, while the other 3 cases did not. All the patients were diagnosed CSA by histopathology and immunohistochemistry, with immunohistochemical staining showing vimentin and S-100 positive, but cytokeratin negative in tumor cells. All patients survived during 28 to 234 months' follow-up. Two patients suffered from tumor recurrence 7 years after surgery and received revision surgery. No complications such as cerebrospinal fluid leakage and intracranial infection occurred after operation. Conclusions: Jugular foramen CSA lacks characteristic symptoms or signs. Imaging is helpful to differential diagnosis. Surgery is the primary treatment of jugular foramen CSA. Patients with facial paralysis should receive surgery in time as to restore the facial nerve. Long-term follow-up is necessary after surgery in case of recurrence.

[Long-term evaluation and physical and mental effects of residual tinnitus following treatment of sudden hearing loss]. Abstract
Objective: To clarify the long-term characteristics of tinnitus following treatment of sudden deafness and its long-term physical and mental effects on patients. Methods: A retrospective analysis was performed on 88 patients (46 males and 42 females; Age from 11 to 89 years) with sudden deafness treated in Department of Otoscope Surgery of Peoples's Libration Army General Hospital in Beijing from April 2020 to January 2021, and the occurrence of tinnitus and treatment effect of all patients were analyzed. Follow-up was conducted for patients with residual tinnitus after treatment for more than 1 year by the investigation and filling in the survey information collection form, Tinnitus Evaluation Questionnaire (TEQ) and Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI). Descriptive statistics and SPSS 22.0 software were used for statistical data analysis. Results: In this study, 93.2% (82/88) of patients with sudden deafness were accompanied by tinnitus at the onset, and the proportion of long-term tinnitus after treatment was 90.2% (74/82). After 1 year of treatment for sudden deafness, the improvement of tinnitus was significant in low-frequency sudden deafness compared with those of high-frequency, flat and total deafness sudden deafness (χ2 value was 6.801, 4.568 and 4.038, all P<0.05). In patients with residual tinnitus, 9 (12.2%) patients felt minimal loudness or even no loudness, 34 (46.0%) patients felt slight loudness, 28 (37.8%) patients felt tinnitus was relatively loud, and 3 (4.1%) patients felt tinnitus was loud or noisy. Nine (12.2%) patients's sleep was often affected, 41 (55.4%) patients's sleep was sometimes affected, 9 (12.2%) patients's sleep was rarely affected, 15 (20.3%) patients's sleep was almost not affected. Twenty-eight (37.8%) patients basically completely adapted to tinnitus and 46 (62.2%) patients did not completely adapted to residual tinnitus. Eight (10.8%) patients had no impact on life, 39 (52.7%) patients had slight impact, 22 (29.7%) patients had moderate impact, and the other 5 (6.8%) patients had greater impact. According to tinnitus evaluation questionnaire(TEQ), there were 12 cases (16.2%) of grade Ⅰ, 26 cases (35.1%) of grade Ⅱ, 28 cases (37.8%) of grade Ⅲ, 7 cases (9.5%) of grade Ⅳ and 1 case (1.4%) of grade Ⅴ. According to tinnitus handicap inventory(THI), tinnitus disability was classified into grade Ⅰ, 22 cases (29.7%), grade Ⅱ, 14 cases (18.9%), Grade Ⅲ, 27 cases (36.5%) and grade Ⅳ, 11 cases (14.9%). Conclusion: The rate of residual tinnitus following treatment of sudden deafness is high. Some of the patients can completely adapt residual tinnitus after one year, but some of them will be affected when sleep, work and study. Residual tinnitus can lead to tinnitus disability in different degrees.

Abstract
Tripping frequently occurs when an individual climbs the stairs with improper foot clearance. Among older adults, falling down the stairs accounts for over 10% of accidental deaths. This paper proposes an exoskeleton control method that blends human-dominant and exoskeleton-dominant control to prevent tripping. The blending controller not only allows the exoskeleton to track the pilot's movements and provide power assistance during regular walking, but also allows the exoskeleton to help the pilot avoid dangers in some cases. An online path planning method is used to generate a safe trajectory in the exoskeleton-dominant mode to help the pilot correct their running trajectory. The controller provides the pilot with adjustment spaces to adapt to sudden changes in the motion mode and enable active self-regulation. The simulations verified the effectiveness of the proposed blending method. Experiments showed that the robot should be involved in the pilot's movements when the foot clearance exceed the safety threshold to prevent tripping.

Abstract
Schistosomiasis-associated pulmonary arterial hypertension (Sch-PAH) is categorized as WHO Group I PAH because its clinical manifestations, laboratory and hemodynamic features share with PAH of other etiologies, such as idiopathic, heritable, HIV and autoimmune disorders. Sch-PAH is usually a life-threatening complication of hepatosplenic schistosomiasis characterized by changes in the vascular wall, remodeling and vasoconstriction with lesions primarily located in the precapillary segments of the pulmonary vasculature, which may result in a marked and sustained increase in pulmonary vascular resistance, right ventricular failure and ultimately death. Although egg deposition into lung and subsequent inflammatory cascades are key factors in the pathogenesis of Sch-PAH, the exact pathogenesis, course of disease and treatment of Sch-PAH remain largely uncertain. This review mainly discusses the pathophysiological and immunological mechanisms of Sch-PAH, so as to provide insights into the clinical diagnosis and treatment of Sch-PAH.

[Efficacy comparison of zero-profile intervertebral fusion and stand-alone interbody cage combined with cage-titanium plate construct in treatment of two-segment skip cervical spondylosis]. Abstract
Objective: To investigate the difference in clinical efficacy between zero-profile interbody fusion (ROI-C) and stand-alone interbody cage combined with cage-titanium plate construct for patient with two-segment skipped cervical spondylosis who received the anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) surgical strategies. Methods: The clinical data of 62 patients with two-segment skipped cervical spondylosis who underwent surgical treatment in the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University from June 2017 to June 2020 were retrospectively analyzed, included 38 males and 24 females, aged (53.3±8.5) years. Thirty-three cases were treated with ROI-C (ROI-C group), and 29 cases with stand-alone interbody cage combined with cage-titanium plate construct (cage+titanium plate group). The following parameters, including operation time, intraoperative blood loss, dysphagia Bazaz grade, Japanese Orthopaedic Association (JOA) score, visual analogue scale (VAS) of pain, neck disability index (NDI), average intervertebral height of operated segments, C2-7 Cobb angle, and related complications, were compared between the two groups. Results: The patients were followed up for (28±5) months (16-34 months). The operation time of ROI-C group was (127.6±34.2) min, which was shorter than that in cage+titanium plate group [(157.1±43.9) min, P=0.004]. The scores of JOA and VAS in both ROI-C group and cage+titanium plate group were significantly improved 3 months after operation when compared with those before operation, and there was no significant difference between the two groups (all P>0.05). The average intervertebral space height of fusion segment in ROI-C group was (6.02±1.03) mm before operation, it was improved to (8.38±1.47) mm at 3 months after operation, (8.16±1.40) mm at 12 months after operation, and it was (6.24±1.05) mm, (8.58±1.18) mm and (7.87±0.73) mm in cage+titanium plate group, respectively, and there was no significant difference between the two groups at each time point (all P>0.05). The Cobb angle of cervical vertebrae in ROI-C group was 10.5°±6.8° before operation, improved to 19.2°±9.0° at 3 months after operation, 18.2°±5.8° at 12 months after operation, and it was 10.9°±4.6°, 18.5°±7.8°, 17.1°±5.2° in cage+titanium plate group, respectively, and there was no significant difference between the two groups at each time point (all P>0.05). The incidence of postoperative dysphagia was 9.1%(3/33) in the ROI-C group and 37.9%(11/29) in the cage+titanium plate group, and the difference was statistically significant (P=0.007). Conclusions: Both ROI-C and stand-alone interbody cage combined with cage-titanium plate construct can achieve good results for two-segment skipped cervical spondylosis. However, ROI-C is more advantageous in shortening the operation time and reducing early postoperative dysphagia.

Abstract
Hepatic venous pressure gradient measurement via jugular vein catheterization is still currently the gold standard for evaluating portal hypertension. However, how to accurately and reproducibly assess whether there is portal hypertension has always been a concern in patients with liver cirrhosis. In recent years, imaging methods have made significant progress in the non-invasive diagnosis of portal hypertension. This paper reviews the current different diagnostic value of imaging methods and related research progress in an attempt to evaluate patients with cirrhotic portal hypertension.

Abstract
A novel arabitol dehydrogenase (ArDH) gene was cloned from a bacterium named Aspergillus nidulans and expressed heterologously in Escherichia coli. The purified ArDH exhibited the maximal activity in pH 9.5 Tris-HCl buffer at 40 °C, showed Km and Vmax of 1.2 mg/mL and 9.1 U/mg, respectively. The ArDH was used to produce the L-xylulose and coupled with the NADH oxidase (Nox) for the regeneration of NAD+. In further optimization, a high conversion of 84.6% in 8 hours was achieved under the optimal conditions: 20 mM of xylitol, 100 µM NAD+ in pH 9.0 Tris-HCl buffer at 30 °C. The results indicated the coupling system with cofactor regeneration provides a promising approach for L-xylulose production from xylitol.

Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of the XEN gel implant in the treatment of glaucoma. Methods: It was a retrospective case series study. Eight patients (8 eyes) in the First Affiliated Hospital of Fujian Medical University from January 2020 to September 2020 were included, including six males and two females, aged 29 to 74 years. The patients treated with the XEN gel implanting for glaucoma. After detailed ophthalmic examination, all the patients met the surgical indications for the XEN gel implanting. Preoperative and postoperative intraocular pressure (IOP), anterior segment and fundus examination results, medication, and surgical complications were evaluated. Results: There were seven patients with primary open-angle glaucoma and one patient with glaucomatocyclitic syndrome. Five patients had received anti-glaucoma surgeries, and the remaining three patients had not received surgical treatment. All XEN gel stents were implanted successfully. All patients were followed up for 4 to 12 months. The preoperative maximum IOP ranged from 11 to 44 mmHg (median, 28 mmHg, 1 mmHg=0.133 kPa), and the IOP was 10 to 18 mmHg (median, 13 mmHg) at the last follow-up. Two to 4 types of medication were used for glaucoma preoperatively (median, 3), while 0 to 2 types (median, 0) were used at the last follow-up. During the follow-up, 7 cases were completely successful and only one case failed. Intraoperative hemorrhage occurred in two patients, and after effective treatment, the IOP decreased to below 20 mmHg. One patient was found to have an increased IOP with the XEN luminal obstruction, and the XEN drainage tube was recanalized. The IOP was about 10 mmHg at the last follow-up, and no anti-glaucoma drugs were used, but the surgery was assessed as failure by standard. The remaining patients had no other serious complications. Conclusion: This preliminary study shows that the XEN gel drainage may be a safe and effective treatment for patients with glaucoma. (Chin J Ophthalmol, 2021, 57: 679-684).

Abstract
Colorectal cancer is the third leading cancer in the world in terms of incidence and mortality. The role of differentially expressed Claudin14 (CLDN14) in CRC has not been reported. We observed that CLDN14 was associated with the progression of CRC. Our functional studies have shown that CLDN14 promoted the proliferation of CRC cells. In addition, and CLDN14 also increased the migration and invasion of CRC cells. In vivo experiments also showed that CLDN14 promoted the growth of colorectal cancer via the PI3K/AKT/mTOR. In summary, our research suggests that CLDN14 promotes the progression of colorectal cancer. Our findings may provide new strategies for clinical management and patient prognosis of CRC.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the effect of antipsychotic medicine risperidone on prepulse inhibition of the startle reflex (PPI) and P50 deficit in patients with first-episode and chronic. Methods: Thirty-eight patients with first-episode schizophrenia and 36 patients with chronic schizophrenia, both in acute stage, were enrolled in the study. All patients were treated with risperidone of different doses (2 to 6mg/d). All patients fulfilled the evaluation of PPI and P50 before treatment and 8 weeks after treatment. The psychotic symptoms were assessed with Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS), and the therapeutic effects were evaluated with PANSS reduction rate. Results: (1) There was no significant difference in PPI and P50 parameters between the two groups before treatment (PPI ratio: first group 43%±29%, chronic group 42%±27%, P>0.05; P50 S2/S1 ratio: first group 83%±33%, chronic group 82%±24%, P>0.05). (2) There was no significant correlation between PPI and P50 inhibition parameters and disease course, psychotic episodes and psychiatric symptoms (PANSS total score, positive symptoms score, negative symptoms score and general psychopathology symptoms score) of schizophrenia (P>0.05). (3) Except the group main effect for S2 amplitude (F=5.75, P=0.019), there was no significant change for main effect and interaction of the other P50 and PPI inhibition ratio parameters after treatment (P50 S2/S1 ratio: first group before treatment 83%±33%, after treatment 85%±49%, P>0.05; chronic group before treatment 82%±44%, after treatment 84%±35%, P>0.05. PPI ratio: first group before treatment 43%±29%, after treatment 42%±27%; chronic group before treatment 42%±27%, after treatment 41%±28%,P>0.05). The effect of risperidone on P50 and PPI parameters was not related to the therapeutic effect. Conclusion: Deficit in sensory gating inhibition exists in both first-episode schizophrenia and chronic schizophrenia, and risperidone is not effective in treating the deficit in sensory gating (PPI and P50) inhibition of schizophrenia.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the epidemiological characteristics and transmission chain of COVID-19 in two families, and to provide scientific evidence for effective prevention and control measures. Methods: Field epidemiological investigation was conducted for the COVID-19 cases occurred in two families and the close contacts in a county of Baotou city in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. Descriptive statistical analysis on epidemiological data was conducted. Results: The infection source of the COVID-19 cases in the two families was a man who had living history in Wuhan. After his return, his parents were infected by him. A few days later, the members of a neighbor family were found to be infected, and relatives of this family were also infected after dining together repeatedly. Finally, ten confirmed cases and three suspected cases of COVID-19 were detected in the two families. Conclusions: Human-to-human transmission of COVID-19 can occur not only in a family but also in neighborhoods. The cases in two families had close relationship, indicating the necessity to strengthen the health education about COVID-19 prevention and control and the management of groups at high risk to reduce the incidence of COVID-19 in families and neighborhoods.

Abstract
This study sought to assess whether the objective response (OR, including complete response and partial response) of first-line chemotherapy can predict overall survival (OS) for patients with metastatic triple-negative breast cancer (mTNBC) in both clinical trial and a real-world setting. The survival predictable parameters were assessed in two independent cohorts, the training cohort of 236 patients as part of a phase 3 trial (CBCSG006, Trial registration number NCT0128762) and the validation cohort of 360 patients from the real-world setting. Univariable and multivariable Cox proportional hazard models were applied to explore associations with progression-free survival and OS in the training cohort and then in the validation cohort. OR (OR vs non-OR, HR, 0.438, p<0.001) together with Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) performance status, disease-free survival, number of metastatic organ sites and platinum-based chemotherapy used as first-line chemotherapy were observed to be independent prognostic factors for progression-free survival (PFS), and OR (OR vs non-OR, HR, 0.602, p=0.002) together with ECOG score, disease-free survival, number of metastatic organ sites and previous anthracycline and/or taxane treatment were observed to be independent predictive factors for OS in the training cohort. These predictors were confirmed in the validation cohort. For OR and non-OR group, median OS was 23.72 and 13.83 months in the training cohort (HR, 0.637, p=0.002), and 21.95 and 13.80 months in the validation cohort (HR, 0.608, p<0.001), respectively. By adding OR in the OS predictors, the concordance index (C-index) improved from 0.622 to 0.645 in the training cohort and 0.653 to 0.675 in the validation cohort. PFS and OS of mTNBC can be predicted by OR status with any regimen of first-line chemotherapy in an independent prospective clinical trial and a real-world setting. Therefore, TNBC, not like other subtypes of breast cancer, may be in need of combination chemotherapy or intense chemotherapy to achieve a high response rate for survival.

Abstract
Congenital facial palsy is unilateral or bilateral facial nerve palsy at birth due to genetic or different pathogenic factors. It can be divided into syndromic type and non-syndromic type according to its accompanying symptom. The pathogeny and symptom of each type are different, in part with genetic heterogeneity. Congenital facial palsy cannot recover spontaneously. Different types of congenital facial palsy have different treatment schemes. The treatment is significant to the improvement of life quality and physical and mental development of children with congenital facial palsy.

Abstract
Summary Mitochondrial DNA(mtDNA) deletion is a rare occurrence that results in defects to oxidative phosphorylation. The common clinical presentations of mtDNA deletion vary but include mitochondrial myopathy, Pearson syndrome, Kearns-Sayre syndrome, and progressive external ophthalmoplegia. However, in clinical practice, some cases cannot be classified as any typical syndrome due to the absence or overlap of phenotypes. Here, we report one case of a 5-year-old girl who presented with progressive deterioration of her clinical status, which included systemic electrolyte disturbance, Fanconi syndrome and sensorineural hearing loss. Through a combination of systematic examinations and molecular analyses, mitochondrial disease was confirmed. A novel 6991-base pair deletion(deletion of mtDNA nt 7808-14798) was identified which confirmed molecular pathogeny of patient. Following treatment, the patient was stabilized and her hearing loss improved by hearing aid. This paper provided an important reference for the diagnosis and treatment of similar patients in clinical practice.

Abstract
PURPOSE Chronic GC administration has numerous side effects, but little is known about the side effects of their short-term use (< 3 months)-particularly, when high doses are involved, as in the treatment of Graves' orbitopathy (GO). We investigated the effects of short-term, high-dose GC on bone turnover markers, bone mineral density (BMD), and trabecular bone scores (TBS). METHODS Eleven patients (10 females and 1 male; median age 56 years) with active GO who were candidates for treatment with intravenous (iv) methylprednisone were consecutively enrolled. All patients were pretreated with a loading dose of 300,000 units of cholecalciferol, then given a median cumulative dose of 4.5 g (range 1.5-5.25 g) iv methylprednisone. Biochemical parameters of bone metabolism (25OHD3, PTH, P1NP, CTX and bALP) were measured at the baseline, and then 1 week and 1, 3, 6 and 12 months. BMD and TBS were obtained by X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) at the baseline and at 6 and 12 months. On DXA image, morphometric vertebral fracture assessment (VFA) was done. RESULTS There were no significant changes in PTH, bALP or P1NP. A significant drop in CTX was seen at 1 month (down Δ49.31% from the baseline, p = 0.02), with a return to the baseline at the 3-month measurement. There was a moderate (not significant), but persistent reduction in P1NP. No changes in BMD or TBS came to light. No vertebral fractures were documented. CONCLUSIONS Short-term, high-dose GC treatment caused a rapid, transient suppression of bone resorption, with no effects on BMD or bone micro-architecture (TBS).

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the protective effect of liraglutide on kidney of diabetic mice induced by high-fat diet and its possible mechanisms. Methods: C57BL/6J male mice were randomly divided into normal chow diet (NC) group and high-fat diet (HFD) group, which were fed with normal chow diet and HFD for 12 weeks respectively. After diet challenge, the mice were randomly divided into normal control group, normal chow diet with liraglutide treatment (NC+Lira) group, HFD group and high-fat diet with liraglutide treatment (HFD+Lira) group. The mice in NC+Lira and HFD+Lira groups were given intraperitoneal injection of liraglutide (400 μg·kg(-1)·d(-1)) for 8 weeks, while mice in NC and HFD groups were given intraperitoneal injection of same amount of normal saline. Urinary albumin and creatinine levels were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Renal morphology was observed by HE staining. The expression levels of silent mating type information regulation 2 homolog 1 (SIRT1) and thioredoxin-interacting protein (TXNIP) were determined by Western blot. Results: Compared with HFD group, liraglutide significantly lowered the body weight [(30.98±1.29) g vs (39.43±2.58) g], fasting blood glucose (FBG) [(7.21±0.15) mmol/L vs (9.55±0.29) mmol/L] and urinary albumin/creatinine ratio (ACR) [(205.48±17.14) μg/mg vs (319.86±34.14) μg/mg] in HFD+Lira group (all P<0.05). HE staining showed that glomerular hypertrophy of HFD group alleviated after liraglutide treatment. The expression level of TXNIP in the kidney of HFD mice significantly decreased after liraglutide treatment (0.41±0.10 vs 3.50±0.70), while expression level of SIRT1 significantly increased (0.75±0.15 vs 0.32±0.04) (both P<0.05). Conclusion: Liraglutide could improve diabetic nephropathy by up-regulation of SIRT1 expression and down-regulation of TXNIP expression in diabetic mice induced by HFD.

Abstract
This study aims to explore the mid-long term management of ketogenic diet (KD) for the treatment of refractory epilepsy in children, and carry out an efficacy assessment. The data of epileptic children who received KD in our hospital from January 2011 to August 2012 (basic management plan group, n=57) were retrospectively analyzed. On this basis, epileptic children who received KD from September 2012 to April 2014 (optimized management plan group, n=52) were managed according to the mid-long term management plan. The effective rate of KD at the first, third, sixth and ninth month was 90.4%, 73.1%, 65.4% and 38.5%, respectively, in the optimized management plan group, and 63.2%, 45.6%, 38.6% and 21.1%, respectively, in the basic management plan group, and the differences were statistically significant. The compliance rate of KD at the third, sixth and ninth month was 94.2%, 78.8% and 63.5%, respectively, in the optimized management plan group, and 82.5%, 47.4% and 28.1%, respectively, in the basic management plan group, and the differences were statistically significant. Optimized mid-long term management of KD in children can improve the control rate of epileptic seizures, and the compliance of patients.

Abstract
Integrating gate-tunable graphene with plasmonic nanostructures or metamaterials offers a great potential in achieving dynamic control of plasmonic response. While remarkable progress has been made in realizing efficient graphene-induced modulations of plasmon resonances, a full picture of graphene-plasmon interactions and the consequent deep understanding on graphene-enabled tuning mechanism remain largely unexplored. Here, we theoretically identify, for the first time, two distinct modulation effects that can coexist in graphene-based plasmonic nanostructure: graphene can influence the plasmon resonances by either acting as equivalent nanocircuit elements or effectively altering their excitation environment, leading to totally different tuning behaviors. A general dependency of tuning features on the graphene-induced impedance, irrespective of structure geometries, is established when graphene serves as nanocircuit elements. We demonstrate that these two modulation effects can be dynamically controlled by appropriately integrating graphene with plasmonic nanostructures, which provide an active window for efficient modulation of surface plasmons. Our findings may pave the way towards realizing dynamic control of plasmonic response, which holds great potential applications in graphene-based active nanoplasmonic devices.

Identification of chemokine CXCL10 in tumor microenvironment by antibody array as a prognostic marker in hepatocellular carcinoma. Neoplasma 2019; 64:778-786. Abstract
Immunological microenvironment is not only composed of multiple immune cells, but also deposited various inflammation factors that regulate immune response to tumor cells. To ascertain the crucial immune factors presented in hepatocellular carcinoma microenvironment (HCM), tumor tissue culture supernatant (TCS) and the corresponding non-tumor tissue culture supernatant (NCS) from patient with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) were analyzed by antibody array technology. Among the inflammation-associated cytokines assayed, high level of chemokines CXCL8/IL-8 (6.82-fold increase) and CXCL10/IP-10 (16.45-fold increase) in TCS than that in paired NCS were evidently identified. And low expression of IL-16 (0.14-fold decrease) and RANTES/CCL5 (0.17-fold decrease) in TCS were also uncovered. Especially, overexpression of CXCL10 in primary HCC compared with their non-tumor counterparts was significantly associated with serum AFP level (P = 0.004), tumor size (P = 0.021), tumor number (P < 0.001) and TNM stage (P = 0.027). In addition, Kaplan-Meier curves demonstrated that patients with higher CXCL10 expression levels had significantly poorer overall survival (P = 0.016) and disease-free survival (P = 0.022) than those with lower CXCL10 expression levels. Univariate and multivariate analyses revealed that the level of CXCL10 expression was an independent prognostic factor for overall survival in HCC patients. In summary, high concentration of CXCL10 is deposited in HCM identified by antibody array, which may contribute to the prediction of clinical outcome of HCC patients.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the clinical characteristics, therapy modality and prognosis of primary breast diffuse large B-cell lymphoma(PB-DLBCL). Methods: A total of 68 patients with PB-DLBCL treated in Tianjin Medical University Cancer Institute and Hospital were enrolled between January 1, 2004 and January 31, 2017. Clinicopathological data were retrospectively analyzed. 67 patients were female and only one male. The median age was 56 years old. 46 patients had Ann Arbor clinical stageⅠ~Ⅱ disease, and the other 22 were stage Ⅲ~Ⅳ. The patients with and without B symptom were 11 and 57, respectively. Kaplan-Meier method was used for univariate analysis to calculate the 5-year overall survival (OS) rate and 5-year progress-free survival (PFS) rate, compared using the log rank test. Cox regression analysis was used for multivariate analysis. Results: The 1, 3, 5-year OS rate were 84.0%, 78.0% and 73.0%, and 1, 3, 5-year PFS rate were 80.0%, 71.0% and 51.0%, respectively. Univariate analysis indicated that eastern cooperative oncology group (ECOG) score, Ann Arbor clinical stage, international prognostic index (IPI) score, risk stratification, B symptom, β2-microglobulin(β2-MG) level, size of the tumor and cycles of chemotherapy were prognostic factors for OS (all P<0.05), and Ann Arbor clinical stage, IPI score, risk stratification and B symptom were prognostic factors for PFS (all P<0.05). Multivariate analysis indicated that Ann Arbor clinical stage was independent prognostic factor for OS(P=0.029) and B symptom was independent prognostic factor for PFS(P=0.028). Conclusions: Prognosis of PB-DLBCL was relatively good. Ann Arbor clinical stage and B symptom were independent prognostic factors for OS and PFS, respectively.

Abstract
After more than 20 years of development, submental artery island flap (SMAIF) has become a versatile flap for head and neck reconstruction of the defects after tumor resection,trauma or facial deformity.The design of SMAIF is flexible and diverse. According to repair requirements,various types of flap can be harvested based on the different composition. SMAIF mainly used as an orthograde pedicled flap.It also can be used as a retrograde, free or hybrid variant.More modifications such as bipaddled, bipedicled, pre-expanded,deepithelialized were evolved. SMAIF shows some advantages including reliable blood supply, convenient preparation, well matched color with the facial skin, and the similar or even better repair effect compared with free flaps.In addition,the submental artery perforator flap and the submental vascularized lymph node flap are the latest clinical application achievements derived from the progress of anatomic research.They further improve the level of preparation skill and expand the indications of SMAIF.

Abstract
A high-performance wide-angle refractive index sensor based on a simple one-dimensional (1D) metallic deep nanogroove array with a high aspect ratio is experimentally fabricated and demonstrated. The 1D deep groove array is featured by the excitation of magnetic plasmon (MP), referring to an effective coupling of incident electromagnetic waves with a strong magnetic response induced inside the deep grooves. Utilizing the MP resonances that are extremely sensitive to the surrounding dielectric medium, we successfully achieve a refractive index sensitivity (RIS) up to ∼1300 nm/RIU, which is higher than that of most experimentally designed plasmonic sensors in the infrared region. Importantly, benefiting from angle-independent MP resonances with strong confinement of the magnetic field inside the deep grooves and strong electric field localization at the groove openings, we demonstrate wide-angle sensing capability valid in a broadband infrared region with an excellent linear dependence on the change of refractive index. Such a MP-based sensor, together with its simple 1D flat nature and ease of fabrication, has great potential for the practical design of high sensitive, cost-effective and compact sensing devices.

Abstract
Polyamines are essential for embryonic and fetal survival, growth, and development. Additionally, polyamines may induce autophagy in mammalian cells. However, little is known about the availability of polyamines or autophagy in the porcine conceptus with intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR). The present study was performed to evaluate the developmental changes of polyamine concentrations in IUGR and normal porcine fetuses as well as autophagic marker levels in the fetal intestinal mucosa during the second half of gestation when most fetal growth occurs. Allantoic fluid (ALF), amniotic fluid (AMF), umbilical vein, and the small-intestinal mucosa were obtained from both IUGR and normal fetal pigs at d 60, 90, and 110 of gestation. Concentrations of polyamines in fetal fluids as well as protein abundances of microtubule-associated protein light chain 3B (LC3B), an autophagic marker, in the fetal small-intestinal mucosa were determined. Concentrations of polyamines varied greatly in different fetal compartments and changed substantially with advancing gestation. Concentrations of polyamines in IUGR fetal fluids and the small-intestinal mucosa were markedly different from those in their normal counterparts at d 60 and 90 of gestation, whereas most of the differences were not detected by late (d 110) gestation. Specifically, polyamine levels were lower in the umbilical vein plasma but higher in ALF and AMF from IUGR fetuses. Furthermore, enhanced levels of an autophagic marker were observed in the small-intestinal mucosa of IUGR fetuses throughout mid and late gestation in association with abnormal spermidine levels in fetal plasma. These findings support the notion that enhanced autophagy may be an important survival mechanism in IUGR fetuses. Collectively, our findings provide a new framework for future studies to define the roles for polyamines in the prevention and treatment of IUGR in both human medicine and animal production.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the feasibility and clinical significance of pediatric renal transplantation using organ donations from pediatric patients donors. METHOD Clinical data of children who underwent renal transplantation using organ donations from pediatric patients between September 2011 and December 2014 were retrospectively analyzed, including diagnosis and treatment before transplant, transplant operation, immunosuppression, complication and prognosis. RESULT Totally 39 cases received pediatric organ donation-pediatric kidney transplantation. The median age at transplantation was 10.5 years. Before transplantation, 37 cases received chronic dialysis. The median waiting time for transplantation was 15 months. The 39 cases received kidneys from 29 donors who were aged from 9 days to 7 years (median 13 months). The median duration of follow-up after the transplantation was 19 months. At 3 month after transplantation and latest follow-up, the length of graft increased (11.3±6.4) mm and (17.5±10.8) mm, respectively. At 6 month and 12 month after transplantation, the height of the recipients increased (5.8±3.5) cm and (15.0±3.5) cm, respectively. At latest follow-up, the serum creatinine level was (80.3±31.9) μmol/L and the eGFR was (94.4±32.9) ml/(min·1.73 m(2)). The recipient survival rate was 100% and grafts survived in 34 cases; 3 cases lost graft function due to thrombosis of renal vessels and the other 2 cases due to bleeding and chronic allograft nephropathy. Donor age of less than 12 months carried higher risk of thrombosis/hemorrhagic complication (P=0.042) and graft dysfunction (P=0.017). CONCLUSION Favorable outcome can be obtained from pediatric organ donation-pediatric kidney transplantation. Patient survival rate reached 100% at one-year and three-year graft survival rate was 87%. The size of the allograft would increase and the height of the recipients would improve after transplantation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To analyze the temperature modification effect on acute mortality due to particulate air pollution. METHODS Daily non-accidental mortality, cardiovascular mortality, and respiratory mortality data were obtained from Jiang'an District Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Daily meteorological data on mean temperature and relative humidity were collected from China Meteorological Data Sharing Service System. The daily concentration of particulate matter was collected from Wuhan Environmental Monitoring center. By using the stratified time-series models, we analyzed effects of particulate air pollution on mortality under different temperature zone from 2002 to 2010, meanwhile comparing the difference of age, gender and educational level, in Wuhan city of China. RESULTS High temperature (daily average temperature > 33.4 ℃) obviously enhanced the effect of PM10 on mortality. With 10 μg/m(3) increase in PM10 concentrations, non-accidental, cardiovascular, and respiratory mortality increased 2.95% (95%CI: 1.68%-4.24%), 3.58% (95%CI: 1.72%-5.49%), and 5.07% (95%CI: 2.03%-9.51%) respectively. However, low temperature (daily average temperature <-0.21 ℃) enhanced PM10 effect on respiratory mortality with 3.31% (95% CI: 0.07%-6.64%) increase. At high temperature, PM10 had significantly stronger effect on non-accidental mortality of female aged over 65 and people with high educational level groups. With an increase of 10 μg/m(3), daily non-accidental mortality increased 4.27% (95% CI:2.45%-6.12%), 3.38% (95% CI:1.93%-4.86%) and 3.47% (95% CI:1.79%-5.18%), respectively. Whereas people with low educational level were more susceptible to low temperature. A 10 μg/m(3) increase in PM10 was associated with 2.11% (95% CI: 0.20%-4.04%) for non-accidental mortality. CONCLUSIONS Temperature factor can modify the association between the PM10 level and cause-specific mortality. Moreover, the differences were apparent after considering the age, gender and education groups.

Abstract
Mastitis is the most important disease in the global dairy industry, and causes large economic losses. Staphylococcus aureus is one of most common pathogens that cause bovine mastitis. CXCR1 has been implicated as a prospective genetic marker for mastitis resistance in dairy cows; CXCR1 expression significantly increases when cows have mastitis. To investigate the mechanisms involved in its increased expression, bisulfite sequencing polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to detect the methylation status of CXCR1 CpG island, and quantitative fluorescence PCR was used to detect CXCR1 expression in bovine mammary tissue induced with S. aureus in three Chinese Holstein cows. No CpG island was found for bovine CXCR1 in the upstream 2-kb region, whereas one CpG island that contained 13 CpG sites was found in exon 1 of CXCR1. All of the CpG sites were under hypermethylation from 90 to 100% in the mammary tissues. When the mammary gland mRNA expression of CXCR1 was 12.10-fold higher in infected cow quarters than in uninfected quarters, the methylation levels of the CpG site at position 519 were significantly lower in the infected quarters than in the uninfected quarters. Pearson correlation analysis showed that the methylation level at position 519 was significantly negatively correlated with the CXCR1 mRNA expression level (P < 0.05). These results indicate that the methylation of the CpG site at position 519 may regulate CXCR1 expression in cows with mastitis induced by S. aureus, but further studies are needed to elucidate the mechanisms involved.

Abstract
We report a new measurement of the midrapidity inclusive jet longitudinal double-spin asymmetry, A_{LL}, in polarized pp collisions at center-of-mass energy sqrt[s]=200 GeV. The STAR data place stringent constraints on polarized parton distribution functions extracted at next-to-leading order from global analyses of inclusive deep-inelastic scattering (DIS), semi-inclusive DIS, and RHIC pp data. The measured asymmetries provide evidence at the 3σ level for positive gluon polarization in the Bjorken-x region x>0.05.

Abstract
MicroRNAs (miRNAs) may be important mediators of the profound molecular and cellular
changes that occur after traumatic brain injury (TBI). However, the changes and
possible roles of miRNAs induced by voluntary exercise prior to TBI are still not
known. In this report, the microarray method was used to demonstrate alterations in
miRNA expression levels in the cerebral cortex of TBI mice that were pretrained on a
running wheel (RW). Voluntary RW exercise prior to TBI: i) significantly decreased
the mortality rate and improved the recovery of the righting reflex in TBI mice, and
ii) differentially changed the levels of several miRNAs, upregulating some and
downregulating others. Furthermore, we revealed global upregulation of miR-21,
miR-92a, and miR-874 and downregulation of miR-138, let-7c, and miR-124 expression
among the sham-non-runner, TBI-non-runner, and TBI-runner groups. Quantitative
reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction data (RT-qPCR) indicated good
consistency with the microarray results. Our microarray-based analysis of miRNA
expression in mice cerebral cortex after TBI revealed that some miRNAs such as
miR-21, miR-92a, miR-874, miR-138, let-7c, and miR-124 could be involved in the
prevention and protection afforded by voluntary exercise in a TBI model.

Abstract
We present ΛΛ correlation measurements in heavy-ion collisions for Au+Au collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=200 GeV using the STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider. The Lednický-Lyuboshitz analytical model has been used to fit the data to obtain a source size, a scattering length and an effective range. Implications of the measurement of the ΛΛ correlation function and interaction parameters for dihyperon searches are discussed.

Abstract
We report the first measurement of charmed-hadron (D(0)) production via the hadronic decay channel (D(0) → K(-) + π(+)) in Au+Au collisions at sqrt[s(NN)] = 200 GeV with the STAR experiment. The charm production cross section per nucleon-nucleon collision at midrapidity scales with the number of binary collisions, N(bin), from p+p to central Au+Au collisions. The D(0) meson yields in central Au + Au collisions are strongly suppressed compared to those in p+p scaled by N(bin), for transverse momenta p(T) > 3 GeV/c, demonstrating significant energy loss of charm quarks in the hot and dense medium. An enhancement at intermediate p(T) is also observed. Model calculations including strong charm-medium interactions and coalescence hadronization describe our measurements.

Abstract
We report the first measurements of the moments--mean (M), variance (σ(2)), skewness (S), and kurtosis (κ)--of the net-charge multiplicity distributions at midrapidity in Au+Au collisions at seven energies, ranging from sqrt[sNN]=7.7 to 200 GeV, as a part of the Beam Energy Scan program at RHIC. The moments are related to the thermodynamic susceptibilities of net charge, and are sensitive to the location of the QCD critical point. We compare the products of the moments, σ(2)/M, Sσ, and κσ(2), with the expectations from Poisson and negative binomial distributions (NBDs). The Sσ values deviate from the Poisson baseline and are close to the NBD baseline, while the κσ(2) values tend to lie between the two. Within the present uncertainties, our data do not show nonmonotonic behavior as a function of collision energy. These measurements provide a valuable tool to extract the freeze-out parameters in heavy-ion collisions by comparing with theoretical models.

Abstract
We report measurements of single- and double-spin asymmetries for W^{±} and Z/γ^{*} boson production in longitudinally polarized p+p collisions at sqrt[s]=510 GeV by the STAR experiment at RHIC. The asymmetries for W^{±} were measured as a function of the decay lepton pseudorapidity, which provides a theoretically clean probe of the proton's polarized quark distributions at the scale of the W mass. The results are compared to theoretical predictions, constrained by polarized deep inelastic scattering measurements, and show a preference for a sizable, positive up antiquark polarization in the range 0.05<x<0.2.

Abstract
Local parity-odd domains are theorized to form inside a quark-gluon plasma which has been produced in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. The local parity-odd domains manifest themselves as charge separation along the magnetic field axis via the chiral magnetic effect. The experimental observation of charge separation has previously been reported for heavy-ion collisions at the top RHIC energies. In this Letter, we present the results of the beam-energy dependence of the charge correlations in Au+Au collisions at midrapidity for center-of-mass energies of 7.7, 11.5, 19.6, 27, 39, and 62.4 GeV from the STAR experiment. After background subtraction, the signal gradually reduces with decreased beam energy and tends to vanish by 7.7 GeV. This implies the dominance of hadronic interactions over partonic ones at lower collision energies.

Abstract
We report the STAR measurements of dielectron (e(+)e(-)) production at midrapidity (|y(ee)|<1) in Au+Au collisions at √[s(NN)]=200 GeV. The measurements are evaluated in different invariant mass regions with a focus on 0.30-0.76 (ρ-like), 0.76-0.80 (ω-like), and 0.98-1.05 (ϕ-like) GeV/c(2). The spectrum in the ω-like and ϕ-like regions can be well described by the hadronic cocktail simulation. In the ρ-like region, however, the vacuum ρ spectral function cannot describe the shape of the dielectron excess. In this range, an enhancement of 1.77±0.11(stat)±0.24(syst)±0.33(cocktail) is determined with respect to the hadronic cocktail simulation that excludes the ρ meson. The excess yield in the ρ-like region increases with the number of collision participants faster than the ω and ϕ yields. Theoretical models with broadened ρ contributions through interactions with constituents in the hot QCD medium provide a consistent description of the dilepton mass spectra for the measurement presented here and the earlier data at the Super Proton Synchrotron energies.

Abstract
Heat stress adversely affects the productivity and immune status of dairy cows. The temperature-humidity index (THI) is commonly used to indicate the degree of heat stress on dairy cattle. We investigated the effects of different THI and Cr supplementation on the antioxidant capacity, the levels of heat shock protein 72 (Hsp72), and cytokine responses of lactating cows. The study used a total of 24 clinically healthy uniparous midlactation Holstein cows, which were randomly divided into 2 groups (n = 12 per group), and was conducted in 3 designated THI periods: low THI period (LTHI; THI = 56.4 ± 2.5), moderate THI period (MTHI; THI = 73.9 ± 1.7), and high THI period (HTHI; THI = 80.3 ± 1.0). The 2 groups of cows were fed corn and corn silage based basal diet supplemented chromium picolinate to provide 3.5 mg of Cr/cow daily (Cr+) or basal diet with no Cr (Cr-). The experiment was a 3 × 2 factorial design. The numbers of leukocytes (P < 0.05) and serum levels of glucose (P < 0.001) were lower; however, the serum levels of blood urea nitrogen (BUN; P < 0.001) and creatinine (P < 0.001) were greater in the MTHI and HTHI than in LTHI. The total antioxidant capacity in the serum was unaltered; an increase in superoxide dismutase activity (P < 0.001) and in serum malondialdehyde concentration (P < 0.001) was observed in the MTHI and HTHI compared with the LTHI. The high THI led to increases in serum concentrations of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α; P < 0.001) and IL-10 (P < 0.05). Cows supplemented with Cr had lower (P = 0.009) serum concentrations of cholesterol but greater (P < 0.001, respectively) serum levels of Hsp72 and IL-10 compared with those without Cr supplementation in the HTHI. Western blot analysis revealed that cows supplemented with Cr had greater (P = 0.038) expression of the inhibitor of nuclear factor kappa B α (IκBα) in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) compared with those without Cr supplementation in the HTHI, whereas the expression of Hsp72 in PBMC was unaltered. Data indicate that there is a decrease in glucose and increases in BUN and creatinine in the serum of midlactation cows under hot conditions during the summer and that these cows have a lowered oxidative capacity but an elevated antioxidant capacity. In addition, Cr may play an anti-inflammatory role in lactating cows by promoting the release of Hsp72, increasing the production of IL-10, and inhibiting the degradation of IκBα under hot conditions during the summer.

Abstract
Rapidity-odd directed flow (v1) measurements for charged pions, protons, and antiprotons near midrapidity (y=0) are reported in sNN=7.7, 11.5, 19.6, 27, 39, 62.4, and 200 GeV Au+Au collisions as recorded by the STAR detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. At intermediate impact parameters, the proton and net-proton slope parameter dv1/dy|y=0 shows a minimum between 11.5 and 19.6 GeV. In addition, the net-proton dv1/dy|y=0 changes sign twice between 7.7 and 39 GeV. The proton and net-proton results qualitatively resemble predictions of a hydrodynamic model with a first-order phase transition from hadronic matter to deconfined matter, and differ from hadronic transport calculations.

Abstract
Azimuthal angular correlations of charged hadrons with respect to the axis of a reconstructed (trigger) jet in Au+Au and p+p collisions at √[s(NN)]=200 GeV in STAR are presented. The trigger jet population in Au+Au collisions is biased toward jets that have not interacted with the medium, allowing easier matching of jet energies between Au+Au and p+p collisions while enhancing medium effects on the recoil jet. The associated hadron yield of the recoil jet is significantly suppressed at high transverse momentum (pTassoc) and enhanced at low pTassoc in 0%-20% central Au+Au collisions compared to p+p collisions, which is indicative of medium-induced parton energy loss in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions.

Abstract
We report the beam energy (sqrt[sNN]=7.7-200 GeV) and collision centrality dependence of the mean (M), standard deviation (σ), skewness (S), and kurtosis (κ) of the net-proton multiplicity distributions in Au+Au collisions. The measurements are carried out by the STAR experiment at midrapidity (|y|<0.5) and within the transverse momentum range 0.4<pT<0.8 GeV/c in the first phase of the Beam Energy Scan program at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. These measurements are important for understanding the quantum chromodynamic phase diagram. The products of the moments, Sσ and κσ2, are sensitive to the correlation length of the hot and dense medium created in the collisions and are related to the ratios of baryon number susceptibilities of corresponding orders. The products of moments are found to have values significantly below the Skellam expectation and close to expectations based on independent proton and antiproton production. The measurements are compared to a transport model calculation to understand the effect of acceptance and baryon number conservation and also to a hadron resonance gas model.

Abstract
The measurement of J/ψ azimuthal anisotropy is presented as a function of transverse momentum for different centralities in Au+Au collisions at sqrt[s(NN)]=200 GeV. The measured J/ψ elliptic flow is consistent with zero within errors for transverse momentum between 2 and 10 GeV/c. Our measurement suggests that J/ψ particles with relatively large transverse momenta are not dominantly produced by coalescence from thermalized charm quarks, when comparing to model calculations.

Abstract
Elliptic flow (v(2)) values for identified particles at midrapidity in Au + Au collisions, measured by the STAR experiment in the beam energy scan at RHIC at sqrt[s(NN)] = 7.7-62.4 GeV, are presented. A beam-energy-dependent difference of the values of v(2) between particles and corresponding antiparticles was observed. The difference increases with decreasing beam energy and is larger for baryons compared to mesons. This implies that, at lower energies, particles and antiparticles are not consistent with the universal number-of-constituent-quark scaling of v(2) that was observed at sqrt[s(NN)] = 200 GeV.

Abstract
Recent studies highlight that the brain glutamate system is involved in the etiology of depression and glutamatergic-targeting drugs are currently being explored as novel antidepressant medications. Previous studies reveal that the selective metabotropic glutamate receptor 5 antagonist 2-methyl-6-(phenylethynyl)pyridine (MPEP) produces antidepressant-like effects in behavioral despair and olfactory bulbectomy models. The current study aimed to further explore its behavioral actions in additional animal models of depression (forced swimming test (FST) and learned helplessness (LH) test) and its underlying neurobiological mechanisms. The results demonstrated that acute treatment of MPEP at 30 but not 10mg/kg significantly reduced immobility in FST without affecting locomotor activities. Sub-chronic, five-day treatment of MPEP (30 mg/kg) decreased escape failures in animals that had developed LH symptoms. This sub-chronic treatment also increased hippocampal brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) protein levels in both non-stressed and stressed animals and restored the stress-induced down-regulation of BDNF expression. Current findings provide strong evidence for further studies of MPEP as a tool to explore novel antidepressants.

Abstract
Pheromonicin-SA (Ph-SA) is a newly developed, engineered multidomain peptide that has a bactericidal effect against Staphylococcus aureus. The objective of this study was to characterize innate immune responses by Staph. aureus-stimulated bovine mammary epithelial cells (BMEC) following treatment with Ph-SA. Primary BMEC from one lactating Holstein cow were isolated and exposed to Staph. aureus for 2 h, and then treated with rifampicin or Ph-SA. Total RNA was isolated from BMEC at 0, 2, 6, 12, and 24 h postinfection, and the mRNA expression of selected genes, including toll-like receptor (TLR)2 and TLR4, IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α), and lactoferrin, was quantified by real-time PCR. In the rifampicin group, increases in the expression of mRNA for TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, and lactoferrin were observed at 6 h postinfection and in the expression of mRNA for TLR2 but not for TLR4 at 12 h postinfection. In the Ph-SA group, increases in the mRNA expression of TLR2, TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, and lactoferrin were observed at 6 h postinfection, and an increase in TLR4 mRNA expression was observed at 24 h postinfection. At 24 h postinfection, the mRNA expression of TLR4, TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, and lactoferrin was higher in the Ph-SA group than in the rifampicin group. In conclusion, Ph-SA might promote the expression of mRNA for TLR2, TLR4, the pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-1, IL-6, and TNF-α, the chemotactic factor IL-8, and lactoferrin in Staph. aureus-infected BMEC. Moreover, Ph-SA may be of value as an antibiotic in promoting innate immune responses by Staph. aureus-infected bovine mammary epithelial cells.

Abstract
STAR's measurements of directed flow (v1) around midrapidity for π±, K±, KS0, p, and p[over ¯] in Au+Au collisions at √[sNN]=200 GeV are presented. A negative v1(y) slope is observed for most of produced particles (π±, K±, KS0, and p[over ¯]). In 5%-30% central collisions, a sizable difference is present between the v1(y) slope of protons and antiprotons, with the former being consistent with zero within errors. The v1 excitation function is presented. Comparisons to model calculations (RQMD, UrQMD, AMPT, QGSM with parton recombination, and a hydrodynamics model with a tilted source) are made. For those models which have calculations of v1 for both pions and protons, none of them can describe v1(y) for pions and protons simultaneously. The hydrodynamics model with a tilted source as currently implemented cannot explain the centrality dependence of the difference between the v1(y) slopes of protons and antiprotons.

Abstract
The objective of the current study was to investigate the toll-like receptors (TLR), including the soluble forms sTLR2 and sTLR4, involved in innate immune responses of dairy cows to experimentally induced Escherichia coli mastitis. Six clinically healthy Holstein dairy cows received an intramammary inoculation of E. coli O111:K58 between 63 and 83 d postpartum. Concentrations of sTLR2 and sTLR4, the proinflammatory cytokines IL-6 and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), and acute phase proteins serum amyloid A (SAA) and haptoglobin (Hp) in blood were measured by ELISA. Furthermore, 10mL of milk was collected from challenged quarters immediately before inoculation and at 6, 12, 24, 48, and 72 h after inoculation, and mRNA expression of selected genes, including TLR2, TLR4, IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α, and IL-8, was quantified by real-time PCR. Escherichia coli intramammary infection elicited a decrease in the circulating levels of leukocytes. Rectal temperature was elevated at 6h postinoculation (PI). Similarly, the serum concentrations of TNF-α, IL-6, and SAA increased at 6h PI. However, serum concentrations of sTLR2, sTLR4, and Hp did not differ after challenge. The mRNA expression of TLR2, IL-1β, and IL-8 in milk somatic cells increased at 12h PI, whereas a decreased IL-6 mRNA expression was detected from 6 to 48 h PI. In conclusion, we found that TLR2 mRNA expression increased in milk somatic cells collected from infected quarters of cows challenged with E. coli, whereas the concentrations of sTLR2 and sTLR4 remained unchanged after challenge. Thus, sTLR2 and sTLR4 may protect the host by sequestrating pathogen-associated molecular patterns during E. coli mastitis.

Abstract
We report transverse momentum (p(T)≤15 GeV/c) spectra of π(±), K(±), p, p[over ¯], K(S)(0), and ρ(0) at midrapidity in p+p and Au+Au collisions at √S(NN)=200 GeV. Perturbative QCD calculations are consistent with π(±) spectra in p+p collisions but do not reproduce K and p(p[over ¯]) spectra. The observed decreasing antiparticle-to-particle ratios with increasing p(T) provide experimental evidence for varying quark and gluon jet contributions to high-p(T) hadron yields. The relative hadron abundances in Au+Au at p(T)≳8 GeV/c are measured to be similar to the p+p results, despite the expected Casimir effect for parton energy loss.

Abstract
We report new STAR measurements of midrapidity yields for the Λ, Λ[over ¯], K(S)(0), Ξ(-), Ξ[over ¯](+), Ω(-), Ω[over ¯](+) particles in Cu+Cu collisions at √S(NN)==200 GeV, and midrapidity yields for the Λ, Λ[over ¯], K(S)(0) particles in Au+Au at √S(NN)==200 GeV. We show that, at a given number of participating nucleons, the production of strange hadrons is higher in Cu+Cu collisions than in Au+Au collisions at the same center-of-mass energy. We find that aspects of the enhancement factors for all particles can be described by a parametrization based on the fraction of participants that undergo multiple collisions.
