Abstract
Current biogeochemical models produce carbon-climate feedback projections with large uncertainties, often attributed to their structural differences when simulating soil organic carbon (SOC) dynamics worldwide. However, choices of model parameter values that quantify the strength and represent properties of different soil carbon cycle processes could also contribute to model simulation uncertainties. Here, we demonstrate the critical role of using common observational data in reducing model uncertainty in estimates of global SOC storage. Two structurally different models featuring distinctive carbon pools, decomposition kinetics, and carbon transfer pathways simulate opposite global SOC distributions with their customary parameter values yet converge to similar results after being informed by the same global SOC database using a data assimilation approach. The converged spatial SOC simulations result from similar simulations in key model components such as carbon transfer efficiency, baseline decomposition rate, and environmental effects on carbon fluxes by these two models after data assimilation. Moreover, data assimilation results suggest equally effective simulations of SOC using models following either first-order or Michaelis-Menten kinetics at the global scale. Nevertheless, a wider range of data with high-quality control and assurance are needed to further constrain SOC dynamics simulations and reduce unconstrained parameters. New sets of data, such as microbial genomics-function relationships, may also suggest novel structures to account for in future model development. Overall, our results highlight the importance of observational data in informing model development and constraining model predictions.

Abstract
Global estimates of the size, distribution, and vulnerability of soil inorganic carbon (SIC) remain largely unquantified. By compiling 223,593 field-based measurements and developing machine-learning models, we report that global soils store 2305 ± 636 (±1 SD) billion tonnes of carbon as SIC over the top 2-meter depth. Under future scenarios, soil acidification associated with nitrogen additions to terrestrial ecosystems will reduce global SIC (0.3 meters) up to 23 billion tonnes of carbon over the next 30 years, with India and China being the most affected. Our synthesis of present-day land-water carbon inventories and inland-water carbonate chemistry reveals that at least 1.13 ± 0.33 billion tonnes of inorganic carbon is lost to inland-waters through soils annually, resulting in large but overlooked impacts on atmospheric and hydrospheric carbon dynamics.

Abstract
Objective: To explore the causes and therapeutic effects of pelvic pain caused by rectal fistula or bladder fistula after comprehensive treatment of cervical cancer and rectal cancer (radiotherapy, surgery, chemotherapy, and other treatments). Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on the clinical and pathological data of patients with pelvic tumors admitted to the First People's Hospital of Yinchuan City, Ningxia and the Affiliated Cancer Hospital of Zhengzhou University from June 2016 to June 2022. The causes of persistent pelvic pain in patients after comprehensive treatment was investigated, and the corresponding therapeutic effects after clinical treatment was observed. Results: Thirty-two tumor patients experienced persistent pain after comprehensive treatment, including 22 cases of cervical cancer and 10 cases of rectal cancer. The preoperative pain of the entire group of patients was evaluated using the digital grading method, with a pain score of (7.88±1.31) points. Among the 32 patients, there were 16 cases of rectovaginal fistula or ileovaginal fistula, 9 cases of vesicovaginal fistula, 5 cases of rectoperineal fistula, and 2 cases of vesicovaginorectal fistula. Thirty-two patients were initially treated with medication to relieve pain, and according to the ruptured organs, a fistula was made to the corresponding proximal intestinal canal and renal pelvis to intercept the intestinal contents and urine. However, the pain did not significantly be improved. The pain score of treatment with the above methods for one week was (8.13±1.13) points, and there was no statistically significant difference compared to preoperative treatment (P=0.417). In the later stage, based on a comprehensive evaluation of whether the tumor had recurred, the value of organ preservation, the benefits of surgery, the balance between survival time and improving quality of life, pathological organ resection or repair was performed. The surgical methods included repair of leaks, local debridement combined with irrigation of proximal intestinal fluid, distal closure of the sigmoid colon combined with proximal ostomy, posterior pelvic organ resection, anterior pelvic organ resection, and total pelvic organ resection. One week after surgery, the patients' pain completely relieved or disappeared, with the pain score of (1.72±1.37) points, which was significantly divergent from the preoperative and initial surgical treatments (P<0.001). Conclusions: Palliative pyelostomy and proximal enterostomy cannot effectively alleviate persistent pelvic floor pain. The fundamental way to alleviate pain is complete blocking of the inflammatory erosion of the intestinal fluid and urine.

Abstract
In this study, we employed a melamine sponge (MS) as the skeleton material and utilized carbonized ZIF-8 (CZIF-8) and chitosan (CS) as the raw materials to prepare CZIF-8/CS-MS, a novel material featuring a three-dimensional interconnected porous network. The resulting CZIF-8/CS-MS material possesses a unique porous structure, significant specific surface area and abundant active sites. These characteristics make CZIF-8/CS-MS a promising absorbent for selective purification of plant growth regulators (PGRs) including 1-naphthlcetic acid (NAA), naphthoxyacetic acid (NOA), 4-chlorophenoxyacetic acid (4-CPA), 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D). After optimizing the extraction conditions, excellent linearity (r > 0.9994) was observed within a wide linear range of 1-100 ng/mL using ultra high performance liquid chromatography-tandem quadrupole mass spectrometry. The detection limits (LODs) and limits of quantification (LOQs) were found to be in the range of 0.013-0.154 ng/mL and 0.044-0.515 ng/mL, respectively. Additionally, the relative recovery of Schisandra chinensis fruit samples was determined to be 89.7-99.4 %, with a relative standard deviation (RSDs) of ≤ 8.4 % (n = 3). Compared to other methods, this approach offers a multitude of benefits, which include but are not limited to exceptional sensitivity, reduced sample volume requirements, low LODs, a comparable linear range, and high reproducibility. The findings of this study pave the way for exploring novel functionalized sponge columns, which leverage the integration of nano-sorbent materials and coating agents, for the purpose of analyzing PGRs within intricate matrix samples.

[Effects of cerium oxide nanoenzyme-gelatin methacrylate anhydride hydrogel in the repair of infected full-thickness skin defect wounds in mice]. ZHONGHUA SHAO SHANG YU CHUANG MIAN XIU FU ZA ZHI 2024; 40:131-140. Abstract
Objective: To investigate the effects of cerium oxide nanoenzyme-gelatin methacrylate anhydride (GelMA) hydrogel (hereinafter referred to as composite hydrogel) in the repair of infected full-thickness skin defect wounds in mice. Methods: This study was an experimental study. Cerium oxide nanoenzyme with a particle size of (116±9) nm was prepared by hydrothermal method, and GelMA hydrogel with porous network structure and good gelling performance was also prepared. The 25 μg/mL cerium oxide nanoenzyme which could significantly promote the proliferation of human skin fibroblasts and had high superoxide dismutase activity was screened out. It was added to GelMA hydrogel to prepare composite hydrogel. The percentage of cerium oxide nanoenzyme released from the composite hydrogel was calculated after immersing it in phosphate buffer solution (PBS) for 3 and 7 d. The red blood cell suspension of mice was divided into PBS group, Triton X-100 group, cerium oxide nanoenzyme group, GelMA hydrogel group, and composite hydrogel group, which were treated with corresponding solution. The hemolysis of red blood cells was detected by microplate reader after 1 h of treatment. The bacterial concentrations of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Escherichia coli were determined after being cultured with PBS, cerium oxide nanoenzyme, GelMA hydrogel, and composite hydrogel for 2 h. The sample size in all above experiments was 3. Twenty-four 8-week-old male BALB/c mice were taken, and a full-thickness skin defect wound was prepared in the symmetrical position on the back and infected with MRSA. The mice were divided into control group without any drug intervention, and cerium oxide nanoenzyme group, GelMA hydrogel group, and composite hydrogel group applied with corresponding solution, with 6 mice in each group. The wound healing was observed on 3, 7, and 14 d after injury, and the remaining wound areas on 3 and 7 d after injury were measured (the sample size was 5). The concentration of MRSA in the wound exudation of mice on 3 d after injury was measured (the sample size was 3), and the blood flow perfusion in the wound of mice on 5 d after injury was observed using a laser speckle flow imaging system (the sample size was 6). On 14 d after injury, the wound tissue of mice was collected for hematoxylin-eosin staining to observe the newly formed epithelium and for Masson staining to observe the collagen situation (the sample size was both 3). Results: After immersion for 3 and 7 d, the release percentages of cerium oxide nanoenzyme in the composite hydrogel were about 39% and 75%, respectively. After 1 h of treatment, compared with that in Triton X-100 group, the hemolysis of red blood cells in PBS group, GelMA hydrogel group, cerium oxide nanoenzyme group, and composite hydrogel group was significantly decreased (P<0.05). Compared with that cultured with PBS, the concentrations of MRSA and Escherichia coli cultured with cerium oxide nanoenzyme, GelMA hydrogel, and composite hydrogel for 2 h were significantly decreased (P<0.05). The wounds of mice in the four groups were gradually healed from 3 to 14 d after injury, and the wounds of mice in composite hydrogel group were all healed on 14 d after injury. On 3 and 7 d after injury, the remaining wound areas of mice in composite hydrogel group were (29±3) and (13±5) mm2, respectively, which were significantly smaller than (56±12) and (46±10) mm2 in control group and (51±7) and (38±8) mm2 in cerium oxide nanoenzyme group (with P values all <0.05), but was similar to (41±5) and (24±9) mm2 in GelMA hydrogel group (with P values both >0.05). On 3 d after injury, the concentration of MRSA on the wound of mice in composite hydrogel group was significantly lower than that in control group, cerium oxide nanoenzyme group, and GelMA hydrogel group, respectively (with P values all <0.05). On 5 d after injury, the volume of blood perfusion in the wound of mice in composite hydrogel group was significantly higher than that in control group, cerium oxide nanoenzyme group, and GelMA hydrogel group, respectively (P<0.05). On 14 d after injury, the wound of mice in composite hydrogel group basically completed epithelization, and the epithelization was significantly better than that in the other three groups. Compared with that in the other three groups, the content of collagen in the wound of mice in composite hydrogel group was significantly increased, and the arrangement was also more orderly. Conclusions: The composite hydrogel has good biocompatibility and antibacterial effect in vivo and in vitro. It can continuously sustained release cerium oxide nanoenzyme, improve wound blood perfusion in the early stage, and promote wound re-epithelialization and collagen synthesis, therefore promoting the healing of infected full-thickness skin defect wounds in mice.

Projecting global biological N 2 fixation under climate warming across land and ocean. Trends Microbiol 2024:S0966-842X(23)00356-6. Abstract
Biological N2 fixation sustains the global inventory of nitrogenous nutrients essential for the productivity of terrestrial and marine ecosystems. Like most metabolic processes, rates of biological N2 fixation vary strongly with temperature, making it sensitive to climate change, but a global projection across land and ocean is lacking. Here we use compilations of field and laboratory measurements to reveal a relationship between N2 fixation rates and temperature that is similar in both domains despite large taxonomic and environmental differences. Rates of N2 fixation increase gradually to a thermal optimum around ~25°C, and decline more rapidly toward a thermal maximum, which is lower in the ocean than on land. In both realms, the observed temperature sensitivities imply that climate warming this century could decrease N2 fixation rates by ~50% in the tropics while increasing rates by ~50% in higher latitudes. We propose a conceptual framework for understanding the physiological and ecological mechanisms that underpin and modulate the observed temperature dependence of global N2 fixation rates, facilitating cross-fertilization of marine and terrestrial research to assess its response to climate change.

A global dataset on phosphorus in agricultural soils. Sci Data 2024; 11:17. Abstract
Numerous drivers such as farming practices, erosion, land-use change, and soil biogeochemical background, determine the global spatial distribution of phosphorus (P) in agricultural soils. Here, we revised an approach published earlier (called here GPASOIL-v0), in which several global datasets describing these drivers were combined with a process model for soil P dynamics to reconstruct the past and current distribution of P in cropland and grassland soils. The objective of the present update, called GPASOIL-v1, is to incorporate recent advances in process understanding about soil inorganic P dynamics, in datasets to describe the different drivers, and in regional soil P measurements for benchmarking. We trace the impact of the update on the reconstructed soil P. After the update we estimate a global averaged inorganic labile P of 187 kgP ha-1 for cropland and 91 kgP ha-1 for grassland in 2018 for the top 0-0.3 m soil layer, but these values are sensitive to the mineralization rates chosen for the organic P pools. Uncertainty in the driver estimates lead to coefficients of variation of 0.22 and 0.54 for cropland and grassland, respectively. This work makes the methods for simulating the agricultural soil P maps more transparent and reproducible than previous estimates, and increases the confidence in the new estimates, while the evaluation against regional dataset still suggests rooms for further improvement.

Withaferin A alleviates inflammation and joint injury in arthritic rats via elevating microRNA-1297 to target karyopherin alpha2. JOURNAL OF PHYSIOLOGY AND PHARMACOLOGY : AN OFFICIAL JOURNAL OF THE POLISH PHYSIOLOGICAL SOCIETY 2023; 74. Abstract
Withaferin A (WFA) is a natural compound separated from the medicinal plant Withania somnifera. As reported, it has the potential to safely cure rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in animal models. Nevertheless, the action mechanism of WFA in treating RA has not been completely illuminated. The study was to explore the action and mechanism of WFA on arthritic rats. First, a collagen-induced arthritis rat model was established. WFA administration alleviated inflammation and injury in arthritic rats. Subsequently, fibroblast synovial cells (FLS) of arthritic rats were separated and cell proliferation and apoptosis abilities were tested. It was found that WFA was available to repress FLS cell proliferation and accelerate apoptosis. MicroRNA-1297 was downregulated in RA patients. Clinical correlation analysis suggested that miR-1297 in the serum of RA patients was negatively associated with pro-inflammatory factors interleukin (IL)-6, IL-17, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, and RA diagnostic indexes (RF, DAS28). In the meantime, miR-1297 had superior diagnostic value in differentiating RA patients from healthy people. Karyopherin α2 (KPNA2) was the downstream target of miR-1297, while miR-1297 negatively modulated KPNA2 expression. Importantly, WFA further restrained KPNA2 expression via elevating miR-1297 in functional rescue experiments, thereby treating inflammation and injury in arthritic rats and repressing FLS cell proliferation and activation. In short, WFA alleviated inflammation and joint damage in arthritic rats via elevating miR-1297 to target KPNA2.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the efficacy and safety of mini open (air/water medium) endoscopy assisted anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (MOEA-ACDF) for the treatment of cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM). Methods: A follow-up study. The clinical data of 30 patients with CSM treated by MOEA-ACDF from January to December in 2021 in the Henan NO.3 Provincial People's Hospital were retrospectively analyzed. Of the patients, 20 were male and 10 were female, the mean age was (49.8±9.3) years (ranged 28-70 years). The CSM occurred at C3-4 level in 2 cases, at C4-5 level in 3 cases, at C5-6 level in 22 cases and at C6-7 level in 3 cases. Each case was compared at the moment of pre-operation and final follow-up by the Japanese Orthopedic Association (JOA) score, C2-7 Cobb angle, and anterior column height of surgical segment. The postoperative complications were recorded. Prevertebral soft tissue edema and hydrops were assessed. The fusion rate was evaluated. The JOA improvement rate was computed at the final follow-up. Results: All the operations were successfully completed and all the patients received follow-up for (12.7±2.7) months (ranged 9-20 months). The mean operation time was (85.3±11.0) min (ranged 65-110 min). The postoperative drainage volume was (16.7±7.4) ml (ranged 5-35 ml). The JOA score and the C2-7 Cobb angle both improved at the final follow-up when compared with those before the operation (15.3±1.3 vs 12.2±2.3, 15.5°±6.1° vs 12.3°±6.0°, both P<0.001). The anterior column height of surgical segment at the final follow-up was (35.6±2.5) mm, and it was higher than that before the operation [(34.1±2.4) mm](P<0.001). No postoperative complications such as dysphagia, hoarseness, cerebrospinal fluid leakage, nerve injury, hematoma occurred. Postoperative review of cervical MRI revealed 3 cases of prevertebral soft tissue edema and hydrops without obvious symptoms. At the final follow-up, cervical spine X-ray or CT showed that all fusion segments met the criteria for osseous fusion, and the fusion rate was 100%. No complications such as neurological aggravation, internal fixation failure, fusion cage sinking, and adjacent segment degeneration was recorded at the final follow-up. At the final follow-up, the comprehensive efficacy evaluated by JOA improvement rate indicated the excellent and good rate was 90.0%(27/30): 19 cases got an excellent outcome, 8 cases got good and 3 cases got medium outcome. Conclusion: MOEA-ACDF combines the endoscopic system with ACDF technology in the treatment of CSM can achieve satisfactory clinical efficacy with high safety, and effectively restore the cervical intervertebral height and physiological curvature.

Abstract
The impact of atmospheric vapor pressure deficit (VPD) on plant photosynthesis has long been acknowledged, but large interactions with air temperature (T) and soil moisture (SM) still hinder a complete understanding of the influence of VPD on vegetation production across various climate zones. Here, we found a diverging response of productivity to VPD in the Northern Hemisphere by excluding interactive effects of VPD with T and SM. The interactions between VPD and T/SM not only offset the potential positive impact of warming on vegetation productivity but also amplifies the negative effect of soil drying. Notably, for high-latitude ecosystems, there occurs a pronounced shift in vegetation productivity's response to VPD during the growing season when VPD surpasses a threshold of 3.5 to 4.0 hectopascals. These results yield previously unknown insights into the role of VPD in terrestrial ecosystems and enhance our comprehension of the terrestrial carbon cycle's response to global warming.

Abstract
Objective: To summarize the correlation between anterior pituitary function and tumor size in patients with different hormone-secreting pituitary adenomas. Methods: This was a retrospective case series study. The clinical data of 1 946 patients with pituitary adenoma hospitalized in the First Medical Center of Chinese PLA General Hospital from January 1, 2005, to December 31, 2020, were collected. The correlation between tumor size and anterior pituitary hormone levels was analyzed using Spearman rank correlation analysis in different types of pituitary adenomas. Results: The median age of the 1 946 patients was 45.1 years, of which 857 (44.0%) were men. The maximum tumor diameter of the patients [M (Q1, Q3)] was 22 (14, 30) mm. Tumor size in nonfunctioning adenomas (n=1 191) was negatively correlated with adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) (r=-0.11, P<0.001), growth hormone (r=-0.13, P<0.001), and luteinizing hormone (men: r=-0.26, P<0.001, women: r=-0.31, all P<0.001). The tumor size of somatotropic adenomas (n=297) was positively correlated with growth hormone (r=0.46, P<0.001), but negatively correlated with male testosterone (r=-0.41, P<0.001). The tumor size of ACTH-secreting pituitary adenomas (n=155) was positively correlated with the ACTH level at 8∶00 AM (r=0.25, P<0.001); however, no correlation was found with cortisol at 8∶00 AM (P>0.05). The tumor size of prolactinomas (n=303) was positively correlated with the prolactin level (men: r=0.34, P=0.001; women: r=0.13, P=0.070). Conclusions: The correlation between the function of the anterior pituitary and size of the tumor depends on the cellular origin of the pituitary adenoma and specific type of hormone secretion. In somatotroph adenomas, ACTH-secreting pituitary adenomas, and prolactinomas, there is a positive correlation between tumor size and level of hormones secreted by the corresponding tumors. In patients with nonfunctioning adenomas, the tumor size was negatively correlated with the hormone levels of the pituitary-adrenal and pituitary-growth hormone axes.

Methods: From June 19, 2020 to May 16, 2022, patients with suspected tuberculosis were prospectively and consecutively enrolled in Hunan Provincial Tuberculosis Prevention and Control Institute, Henan Provincial Hospital of Infectious Diseases and Wuhan Jinyintan Hospital. A total of 1 328 patients with suspected tuberculosis were finally included. According to the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 1 035 pulmonary tuberculosis patients (357 were confirmed tuberculosis cases and 678 were clinically diagnosed tuberculosis cases) and 180 non-tuberculosis patients were finally included. Sputum samples were collected from all patients for routine sputum smear acid-fastness tests, mycobacterial culture and drug susceptibility testing. Moreover, the diagnostic value of Xpert®MTB/RIF (referred to as "Xpert") and InnowaveDXin detecting tuberculosis and rifampicin resistance was evaluated. Clinical diagnosis and culture results of Mycobacterium tuberculosis were used as reference standards to assess tuberculosis diagnosis, and phenotypic drug sensitivity and Xpert were used as reference standards to assess rifampicin resistance. The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value and negative predictive value of the two methods for tuberculosis diagnosis and rifampicin resistance were analyzed. The consistency of the two techniques was analyzed usingkappa test. Results: Taking clinical diagnosis as the reference standard, the detection sensitivity of InnowaveDX [58.0% (600/1 035)] was higher than that of Xpert [51.7% (535/1 035)] in 1035 patients with pulmonary tuberculosis, and the difference was statistically significant (P<0.001). In 270 pulmonary tuberculosis patients with culture-positive pulmonary tuberculosis identified as M.tuberculosis-complex, the positive rates of InnowaveDX and Xpert were both high [99.6%(269/270)and 98.2%(265/270), respectively] and there was no statistical difference. In culture-negative patients with pulmonary tuberculosis, the sensitivity of InnowaveDX was 38.8% (198/511), which was higher than that of Xpert (29.4%, 150/511), and the difference was statistically significant (P<0.001). Taking phenotypic drug-susceptibility testing (DST) as reference, the sensitivity of InnowaveDX to rifampicin resistance was 99.0% (95%CI: 94.7%-100.0%) and the specificity was 94.0%(95%CI: 88.5%-97.4%). With Xpert as the reference, the sensitivity and specificity of InnowaveDX were 97.1% (95%CI: 93.4%-99.1%) and 99.7% (95%CI: 98.4%-100.0%), respectively, and the kappa value was 0.97 (P<0.001). Conclusions: InnowaveDX show a high sensitivity for detecting Mycobacterium tuberculosis, especially in pulmonary tuberculosis patients with a clinical diagnosis and negative culture results. It also showed high sensitivity in detecting rifampicin resistance with DST and Xpert as reference respectively. InnowaveDX is an early and accurate diagnostic tool for TB and drug-resistant TB, particularly suitable for application in low- and middle-income countries.

Microbial carbon use efficiency promotes global soil carbon storage. Nature 2023; 618:981-985. Abstract
Soils store more carbon than other terrestrial ecosystems1,2. How soil organic carbon (SOC) forms and persists remains uncertain1,3, which makes it challenging to understand how it will respond to climatic change3,4. It has been suggested that soil microorganisms play an important role in SOC formation, preservation and loss5-7. Although microorganisms affect the accumulation and loss of soil organic matter through many pathways4,6,8-11, microbial carbon use efficiency (CUE) is an integrative metric that can capture the balance of these processes12,13. Although CUE has the potential to act as a predictor of variation in SOC storage, the role of CUE in SOC persistence remains unresolved7,14,15. Here we examine the relationship between CUE and the preservation of SOC, and interactions with climate, vegetation and edaphic properties, using a combination of global-scale datasets, a microbial-process explicit model, data assimilation, deep learning and meta-analysis. We find that CUE is at least four times as important as other evaluated factors, such as carbon input, decomposition or vertical transport, in determining SOC storage and its spatial variation across the globe. In addition, CUE shows a positive correlation with SOC content. Our findings point to microbial CUE as a major determinant of global SOC storage. Understanding the microbial processes underlying CUE and their environmental dependence may help the prediction of SOC feedback to a changing climate.

Machine learning for accelerating process-based computation of land biogeochemical cycles. GLOBAL CHANGE BIOLOGY 2023; 29:3221-3234. Abstract
Global change ecology nowadays embraces ever-growing large observational datasets (big-data) and complex mathematical models that track hundreds of ecological processes (big-model). The rapid advancement of the big-data-big-model has reached its bottleneck: high computational requirements prevent further development of models that need to be integrated over long time-scales to simulate the distribution of ecosystems carbon and nutrient pools and fluxes. Here, we introduce a machine-learning acceleration (MLA) tool to tackle this grand challenge. We focus on the most resource-consuming step in terrestrial biosphere models (TBMs): the equilibration of biogeochemical cycles (spin-up), a prerequisite that can take up to 98% of the computational time. Through three members of the ORCHIDEE TBM family part of the IPSL Earth System Model, including versions that describe the complex interactions between nitrogen, phosphorus and carbon that do not have any analytical solution for the spin-up, we show that an unoptimized MLA reduced the computation demand by 77%-80% for global studies via interpolating the equilibrated state of biogeochemical variables for a subset of model pixels. Despite small biases in the MLA-derived equilibrium, the resulting impact on the predicted regional carbon balance over recent decades is minor. We expect a one-order of magnitude lower computation demand by optimizing the choices of machine learning algorithms, their settings, and balancing the trade-off between quality of MLA predictions and need for TBM simulations for training data generation and bias reduction. Our tool is agnostic to gridded models (beyond TBMs), compatible with existing spin-up acceleration procedures, and opens the door to a wide variety of future applications, with complex non-linear models benefit most from the computational efficiency.

Abstract
Photosynthesis and evapotranspiration in Amazonian forests are major contributors to the global carbon and water cycles. However, their diurnal patterns and responses to atmospheric warming and drying at regional scale remain unclear, hindering the understanding of global carbon and water cycles. Here, we used proxies of photosynthesis and evapotranspiration from the International Space Station to reveal a strong depression of dry season afternoon photosynthesis (by 6.7 ± 2.4%) and evapotranspiration (by 6.1 ± 3.1%). Photosynthesis positively responds to vapor pressure deficit (VPD) in the morning, but negatively in the afternoon. Furthermore, we projected that the regionally depressed afternoon photosynthesis will be compensated by their increases in the morning in future dry seasons. These results shed new light on the complex interplay of climate with carbon and water fluxes in Amazonian forests and provide evidence on the emerging environmental constraints of primary productivity that may improve the robustness of future projections.

Abstract
Triterpenoid saponins are the main bioactive components contributed to the nutritional value of ginseng, and different process conditions will affect their content and quality. To study the holistic characterization and dynamic changes of triterpenoid saponins in Asian ginseng (ASG) and American ginseng (AMG) during soaking and decoction, a UPLC-Triple TOF-MS/MS-based metabolomics strategy was used to characterize and discover differential saponin markers. In total, 739 triterpenoid saponins (including 225 potential new saponins) were identified from ASG and AMG in untargeted metabolomics. Based on PCA and OPLS-DA, 51 and 48 saponin markers were screened from soaked and decocted ASG and AMG, respectively. Additionally, targeted metabolomics analysis and HCA of 22 ginsenoside markers suggested that decoction of ASG and AMG for 2 h to 4 h could significantly increase the contents of rare ginsenosides (G), such as G-Rg3, G-Rg5, G-F4. This study provides a scientific insight that high boiling combined with simmering enriches ASG and AMG extracts with rich rare ginsenosides that are more beneficial to human health.

Abstract
In 2021, a total of 151 pregnant women were selected from the suburb of Shanghai. A questionnaire survey was conducted to obtain data about maternal age, gestational week, total annual household income, education level and passive smoking among pregnant women and one spot urine was collected. The concentrations of eight neonicotinoid pesticides and four metabolites in urine were measured by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry. The differences in detection frequencies and concentrations of neonicotinoid pesticides and their metabolites among pregnant women with different characteristics were compared, and the influencing factors of the detection of neonicotinoid pesticides in urine were analyzed. The results showed that at least one neonicotinoid pesticide was detected in 93.4% (141 samples) of urine samples. The detection frequencies of N-desmethyl-acetamiprid, clothianidin, thiamethoxam, and N-desmethyl-clothianidin were high, about 78.1% (118 samples), 75.5% (114 samples), 68.9% (104 samples), and 44.4% (67 samples), respectively. The median concentration of the sum of all neonicotinoid pesticides was 2.66 μg/g. N-desmethyl-acetamiprid had the highest detection concentration with a median concentration of 1.04 μg/g. A lower urinary detection frequency of imidacloprid and its metabolites was seen in pregnant women aged 30-44 years [OR (95%CI): 0.23 (0.07-0.77)]. A higher detection frequency of clothianidin and its metabolites was seen in pregnant women with per capita annual household income≥100, 000 yuan [OR (95%CI): 6.15 (1.56-24.28)]. There was widespread exposure to neonicotinoid pesticides and their metabolites in pregnant women from the suburb of Shanghai, which might pose potential health risks to pregnant women, and maternal age and household income were potential influencing factors of the exposure to neonicotinoid pesticides.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE The dried root of Platycodon grandiflorum (Jacq.) A.DC. (PG) is a traditional herb used in Asian countries and is widely used in formulas for the treatment of diabetes. Platycodin D (PD) is one of the most important components of PG. AIM OF THE STUDY This study aimed to investigate the improvement effects and regulatory mechanisms of PD on kidney injury in a high-fat diet (HFD) combined with streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic nephropathy (DN). MATERIALS AND METHODS Model mice were treated with oral gavage of the PD (2.5, 5 mg/kg) for 8 weeks. Determination of serum lipid and renal function-related indexes creatinine (CRE), and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) levels in mice, and histopathological section analysis of kidney. Molecular docking and molecular dynamics were utilized to study the binding ability of PD to target NF-κB and apoptosis signaling pathway-related proteins. Moreover, western blot was used to test the expressions of NF-κB and apoptosis-related proteins. Vitro experiments were performed to validate the related mechanisms using RAW264.7 cells and HK2 cells cultured by high glucose. RESULTS In vivo experiments, the administration of PD (2.5 and 5.0 mg/kg) reduced fasting blood glucose (FBG) and homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) levels in DN mice, while lipid levels and renal function were significantly improved. Furthermore, PD significantly inhibited the development of DN in the model mice by regulating NF-κB and apoptotic signaling pathways, reduced the abnormal elevation of serum inflammatory factors TNF-α and IL-1β, and repaired renal cell apoptosis. In vitro experiments, NF-κB inhibitor ammonium pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate (PDTC) was used to confirm that PD can alleviate high glucose-induced inflammation in RAW264.7 cells and inhibit the release of inflammatory factors. And in HK2 cell experiments, it was verified that PD can inhibit ROS generation, reduce the loss of JC-1 and suppress HK2 cell injury by regulating NF-κB and apoptotic pathways. CONCLUSIONS These data suggested that PD has the potential to prevent and treat DN and is a promising natural nephroprotective agent.

Abstract
Objective: To study the long-term morphological stability of three-dimensional (3D) printed photosensitive resin dental models under natural light and dark conditions. Methods: Eighty sets of resin dental models were made by the desktop 3D printer from one digital standard model set, and randomly divided into two groups, namely natural light group (40 sets) and dark group (40 sets). All resin models were stored in sealed bags, with 4 model sets from each group randomly collected after 1, 3, 5, 7, 14, 21, 28, 40, 60, or 90 days of storage and 3D scanned using an optical model scanner. The root-mean-square error (RMSE) was calculated to represent the mean deviation of the difference between the digital standard model and the scanned resin model. Meanwhile, three linear indexes (the width between the canines, the width between the first molars, and the arch length) of the resin dental model were measured and compared with the corresponding values of the standard model. RMSE and the linear measurements between the digital standard model and the scanned resin models were compared between the natural light group and the dark group and among models from different time points. Results: Compared with the digital standard model, the RMSE values of 96.9% (155/160) resin dental models were less than 0.1 mm within 90-day storage. Also, at the same time point, there was no significant difference in the RMSE between the natural light group and the dark group (P>0.05). 75.0% (360/480) of the absolute values of the linear differences (differences in inter-canine width, intra-molar width, and arch length between the digital standard model and the scanned resin model) were within 0.2 mm, and about 0.1% (3/480) of the linear differences were greater than 0.5 mm, and all of the linear differences were within 0.6 mm. Conclusions: 3D-printed resin dental models can be stored stably under natural light and dark conditions for a long time.

Significant effects of precipitation frequency on soil respiration and its components-A global synthesis. GLOBAL CHANGE BIOLOGY 2023; 29:1188-1205. Abstract
Global warming intensifies the hydrological cycle, which results in changes in precipitation regime (frequency and amount), and will likely have significant impacts on soil respiration (Rs ). Although the responses of Rs to changes in precipitation amount have been extensively studied, there is little consensus on how Rs will be affected by changes in precipitation frequency (PF) across the globe. Here, we synthesized the field observations from 296 published papers to quantify the effects of PF on Rs and its components using meta-analysis. Our results indicated that the effects of PF on Rs decreased with an increase in background mean annual precipitation. When the data were grouped by climate conditions, increased PF showed positive effects on Rs under the arid condition but not under the semi-humid or humid conditions, whereas decreased PF suppressed Rs across all the climate conditions. The positive effects of increased PF mainly resulted from the positive response of heterotrophic respiration under the arid condition while the negative effects of decreased PF were mainly attributed to the reductions in root biomass and respiration. Overall, our global synthesis provided for the first time a comprehensive analysis of the divergent effects of PF on Rs and its components across climate regions. This study also provided a framework for understanding and modeling responses of ecosystem carbon cycling to global precipitation change.

Abstract
In this work, we investigated the ameliorative effects of platycodin D (PD), a major active chemical ingredient isolated from the roots of Platycodon grandiflorum (PG), on high-fat diet (HFD)/streptozotocin (STZ)-induced type 2 diabetes (T2D) mice. PD treatment (2.5 and 5.0 mg kg-1) improved HFD-induced body weight gain. PD administration also decreased the fasting blood glucose (FBG) level and improved glucose and insulin tolerance levels. These data collectively showed that PD could maintain glucose homeostasis. In addition, the diabetic mice with PD treatment also showed fewer pathological changes in liver tissues and improved hepatic functional indexes with respect to the levels of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and recovery of abnormal liver function caused by T2D. Except for these, PD decreased the decomposition of hepatic glycogen. The results from western blot analysis showed that PD treatment might regulate the hepatic gluconeogenesis pathway with the increased phosphorylation/expression of AMPK and decreased expressions of PCK1 and G6Pase. In the aspect of lipid metabolism, PD decreased the whole-body lipid levels, including total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), and high-density lipoprotein (HDL), and reduced the hepatic fat accumulation induced by T2D through the AMPK/ACC/CPT-1 fatty acid anabolism pathway. In addition, the results of molecular docking showed that PD may have a potential direct effect on AMPK and other key glycolipid metabolism proteins. To summarize, PD modulation of hepatic glycolipid metabolism abnormalities is promising for T2D therapy in the future.

Abstract
The kilometer square array (KM2A) of the large high altitude air shower observatory (LHAASO) aims at surveying the northern γ-ray sky at energies above 10 TeV with unprecedented sensitivity. γ-ray observations have long been one of the most powerful tools for dark matter searches, as, e.g., high-energy γ rays could be produced by the decays of heavy dark matter particles. In this Letter, we present the first dark matter analysis with LHAASO-KM2A, using the first 340 days of data from 1/2-KM2A and 230 days of data from 3/4-KM2A. Several regions of interest are used to search for a signal and account for the residual cosmic-ray background after γ/hadron separation. We find no excess of dark matter signals, and thus place some of the strongest γ-ray constraints on the lifetime of heavy dark matter particles with mass between 10^{5} and 10^{9} GeV. Our results with LHAASO are robust, and have important implications for dark matter interpretations of the diffuse astrophysical high-energy neutrino emission.

Abstract
Background: Epimedii Folium, as a natural botanical medicine, has been reported to have protective effects on intestinal diseases by modulating multiple signaling pathways. This study aimed to explore the potential targets and molecular mechanisms of Epimedii Folium extract (EFE) against cisplatin-induced intestinal injury through network pharmacology, molecular docking, and animal experiments. Methods: Network pharmacology was used to predict potential candidate targets and related signaling pathways. Molecular docking was used to simulate the interactions between significant potential candidate targets and active components. For experimental validation, mice were intraperitoneally injected with cisplatin 20 mg/kg to establish an intestinal injury model. EFE (100, 200 mg/kg) was administered to mice by gavage for 10 days. The protective effect of EFE on intestinal injury was analyzed through biochemical index detection, histopathological staining, and western blotting. Results: Network pharmacology analysis revealed that PI3K-Akt and apoptosis signaling pathways were thought to play critical roles in EFE treatment of the intestinal injury. Molecular docking results showed that the active constituents of Epimedii Folium, including Icariin, Epimedin A, Epimedin B, and Epimedin C, stably docked with the core AKT1, p53, TNF-α, and NF-κB. In verified experiments, EFE could protect the antioxidant defense system by increasing the levels of glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) and catalase (CAT) while reducing the content of malondialdehyde (MDA). EFE could also inhibit the expression of NF-κB and the secretion of inflammatory factors, including TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6, thereby relieving the inflammatory damage. Further mechanism studies confirmed that EFE had an excellent protective effect on cisplatin-induced intestinal injury by regulating PI3K-Akt, caspase, and NF-κB signaling pathways. Conclusion: In summary, EFE could mitigate cisplatin-induced intestinal damage by modulating oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis.

Abstract
Saponins from the roots of Platycodon grandiflorum, an edible medicinal plant, have shown a wide range of beneficial effects on various biological processes. In this study, an animal model was established by a single intraperitoneal injection of cisplatin (20[Formula: see text]mg/kg) for evaluating the protective effects of saponins from the roots of P. grandiflorum (PGS, 15[Formula: see text]mg/kg and 30[Formula: see text]mg/kg) in mice. The results indicated that PGS treatment for 10 days restored the destroyed intestinal mucosal oxidative system, and the loosened junctions of small intestinal villi was significantly improved. In addition, a significant mitigation of apoptotic effects deteriorated by cisplatin exposure in small intestinal villi was observed by immunohischemical staining. Also, western blot showed that PGS could effectively prevent endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress-induced apoptosis caused by cisplatin in mice by restoring the activity of PERK (an ER kinase)-eIF2[Formula: see text]-ATF4 signal transduction pathway. Furthermore, molecular docking results of main saponins in PGS suggested a better binding ability with target proteins. In summary, the present work revealed the underlying protective mechanisms of PGS on intestinal injury induced by cisplatin in mice.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cisplatin-induced cardiotoxicity severely limits its clinical application as an antitumor drug and increases the risk of cardiovascular disease. Icariin (ICA), the main flavonoid isolated from Epimedii Folium, has been demonstrated to have various beneficial effects on cardiovascular disease. However, the protective effect of ICA against cisplatin-induced cardiotoxicity remains unclear. PURPOSE In present study, we explored the protective action of ICA against cisplatin-induced cardiotoxicity and its possible molecular mechanisms in vitro and in vivo. METHODS Mice were intraperitoneally injected with cisplatin 4 mg/kg every other day for 7 times to establish myocardial injury model. ICA (15, 30 mg/kg) was administered to mice by gavage for 21 days. H9c2 cells were treated with ICA (3, 6, 12 µM) in the presence or absence of cisplatin (40 µM), and then cell viability, oxidative stress, apoptosis, and mitochondrial function were evaluated. RESULTS Biochemical index detection and histopathological staining analysis showed that ICA had a good protective effect on cisplatin-induced cardiotoxicity. Cellular experiments showed that ICA inhibited cisplatin-induced oxidative stress in a dose-dependent manner by regulating the levels of glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and malondialdehyde (MDA). ICA could inhibit the expression of NF-κB and the secretion of inflammatory factors, thereby alleviating the inflammatory injury caused by cisplatin. In addition, ICA could alleviate cisplatin-induced myocardial injury by activating SIRT1 and PI3K/Akt signaling pathways and inhibiting MAPKs signaling pathway. CONCLUSION These results suggest that ICA could attenuate cisplatin-induced cardiac injury by inhibiting oxidative stress, inflammation and apoptosis, laying a foundation for ICA to reduce chemotherapy-induced cardiotoxicity in clinical practice.

Abstract
Objective: To understand the epidemic situation of malaria and its change trend in the Belt and Road countries. Methods: The 145 countries with which China has signed cooperation documents on the Belt and Road Initiative were selected for this study, and their malaria incidence data were collected from the Global Burden of Disease 2019. The age-standardized incidence rate (ASR) was used to describe the epidemic situation of malaria in 2019. The estimated annual percentage change (EAPC) of the ASR was calculated to assess the incidence trend of malaria from 2013 to 2019. Results: Among the 145 countries, 74 (51.03%) countries had malaria epidemics, mainly in Africa (60.81%, 45/74) and Asia (22.97%, 17/74). The countries with malaria incidence of ≥10 000 per 100 000 in 2019 were mainly distributed in Africa (96.15%, 25/26). From 2013 to 2019, the incidence rates of malaria showed decreasing trends in 32 countries (43.24%), and the incidence rates of malaria in 23 countries (31.08%) showed no significant change, while the incidence rates of malaria in 19 countries (25.68%) showed increasing trends. The obvious increasing trends were observed in Cape Verde (EAPC=151.46, 95%CI: 47.15-329.71), South Africa (EAPC=98.61, 95%CI: 32.11-198.58) and Namibia (EAPC=78.03, 95%CI: 54.30-105.42). Conclusion: About half of the Belt and Road countries had malaria epidemics in 2019, in which 1/4 had increased incidence of malaria. China should continue to strengthen the prevention and control of malaria, especially imported malaria, to maintain the achievements of malaria elimination.

Abstract
Objective: To understand the epidemic situation of HIV/AIDS and its change trend in the Belt and Road countries and provide evidence for the improvement of prevention and control of the cross-border transmission of HIV/AIDS. Methods: The 145 countries that have signed the cooperation document of the Belt and Road initiative with China were selected in our study. Age-standardized incidence rate and prevalence rate of HIV/AIDS in the 145 countries from 2013 to 2019 were downloaded from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019. Age-standardized incidence rate and prevalence rate of HIV/AIDS in 2019 were used to describe the HIV/AIDS epidemics in 145 countries, and the estimated annual percentage change (EAPC) of incidence was calculated to analyze the trend of HIV/AIDS incidence from 2013 to 2019. Results: In 2019, Africa had the highest proportion of countries with HIV/AIDS incidence exceeding 40.00 per 100 000 (56.86%, 29/51), and Asia had the lowest proportion (5.41%, 2/37). The countries with the prevalence rate of HIV/AIDS exceeding 100.00 per 10 000 were almost distributed in Africa, accounting for 20.69% (30/145). From 2013 to 2019, the incidence rate of HIV/AIDS increased in 50 countries, accounting for 34.48% (50/145). The incidence rate of HIV/AIDS showed downward trends in 69 countries (47.59%, 69/145), and showed no significant change in 26 countries (17.93%, 26/145). The most obvious increase of incidence rate of HIV/AIDS was observed in Comoros (EAPC=15.60, 95%CI: 5.84-26.26) and the most obvious decrease was observed in Burundi (EAPC=-14.27, 95%CI: -15.21 to -13.31). Conclusions: In the Belt and Road countries, the most severe disease burden of HIV/AIDS was observed in countries in Africa, and the incidences of HIV/AIDS increased rapidly in some European countries, which means the risk of cross-border transmission still exists. Hence, the prevention and control of HIV/AIDS in China should be further strengthened in the future.

Abstract
Objective: To determine the effects of menopausal stage, age and other associated risk factors on symptoms of anxiety and depression among women in a community in Beijing. Methods: This study was a community-based prospective cohort. Participants who had transitioned through natural menopause, completed two or more depressive and anxiety symptoms evaluations, aged 35 to 64 years, and did not use hormone therapy were selected from the Peking Union Medical College Hospital aging longitudinal cohort of women in midlife to this analysis. The primary outcome variables were depressive and anxiety symptoms, assessed by hospital anxiety and depression scale (HADS). The generalized estimation equation was used in the statistical analysis. Results: Followed up from 2006 to 2014, 430 women and 2 533 HADS assessments were retained in the cohort. Depressive symptoms were more common than anxiety symptoms during all menopausal stages. The incidences of depressive and anxiety symptoms were 14.5% (19/191) and 3.1% (4/191) in the premenopausal -3 stage, respectively. The incidence increased in both menopausal transition and postmenopausal stage, with the highest incidence in the +1c stage [20.6% (155/751) and 8.8% (66/751), respectively]. However, these differences were not statistically significant (all P>0.05). Depressive symptoms were highest in the ≥60-<65 age group [20.8% (74/355)], and anxiety symptoms were highest in the ≥50-<55 age group [8.2% (62/754)]; but there were no statistical significances between different age groups and depressive and anxiety symptoms (all P>0.05). Multivariable analysis showed that high body mass index, low education status, and poor health status were independently associated with depressive symptoms (all P<0.05), and that poor health status, trouble falling asleep, and early awakening were independently associated with anxiety symptoms (all P<0.01). Conclusions: Depressive and anxiety symptoms are more common during menopausal transition and postmenopausal stage compared with reproductive stage. Depressive symptoms are more common than anxiety symptoms. To screen and assess depressive and anxiety symptoms in perimenopausal women is essential, especially for women with high risk factors.

Abstract
Despite the high capacity and low cost of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries, their commercialization is greatly blocked by multiple bottlenecks including the shuttle effect of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs), poor conductivity of sulfur, and sluggish reaction kinetics. Herein, we propose novel two-dimensional MSi2P4 (M = V, Nb, and Ta) monolayers as promising sulfur hosts to improve the Li-S battery performance. Our calculations show that MSi2P4 monolayers offer moderate binding strengths to the polysulfides, which are expected to effectively inhibit the LiPS shuttling and dissolution. Moreover, the conductive properties of the MSi2P4 systems are well maintained after LiPS adsorption, eliminating the insulating nature of sulfur species. Remarkably, MSi2P4 monolayers exhibit superior electrocatalytic activity for the sulfur reduction reaction and the Li2S decomposition reaction, which considerably lowers the energy barriers of LiPS conversions during discharge and charge, thus ensuring the fast redox kinetics and high sulfur utilization of Li-S batteries. This study pioneers the application of MSi2P4 monolayers as highly efficient sulfur host materials for Li-S batteries and affords insights for further development of advanced Li-S batteries.

Abstract
To investigate the temporal trend of antibiotic use among children in Shanghai from 2017 to 2020. The stratified cluster sampling method was used to establish a dynamic cohort of healthy children based on primary schools in Changning District, Shanghai. In the cohort, there were 282 children from 2017, 287 children from 2018, 294 from 2019 and 301 from 2020. A total of 700 children aged 7-11 years were included in the study. The basic information and antibiotic use of children were investigated by questionnaire every year, and their height and weight were measured at the same time. Chi-square test was used to analyze the difference of antibiotic use rate in each year and generalized estimation equation was used to analyze the temporal trend of antibiotic use. The results showed that the use rates of all antibiotics, cephalosporins, azithromycin and other antibiotics (including penicillin, lincomycin, quinolones, etc.) of children between 2017 and 2020 were 15.6%, 10.5%, 2.7%, and 2.4%, respectively. In 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020, there were significant differences for the use rates of total antibiotics and other antibiotics in children (P=0.033, P=0.040), and there were no significant differences for the use rates of cephalosporins and azithromycin (P=0.274, P=0.455). After adjusting for children's basic characteristics, the generalized estimation equation showed that the annual use rate of all antibiotics, cephalosporins, and other antibiotics decreased over time.

Abstract
Objective: To analyze the clinical and genetical characteristics of children with Gaucher disease and to explore the relationship between genotype and phenotype. Methods: In this retrospective study, the clinical data of 14 children with Gaucher disease diagnosed in Children's Hospital of Nanjing Medical University from August 2016 to October 2021 were analyzed. Their general conditions, clinical manifestations, laboratory tests and gene variations were collected, followed by the analysis of the clinical phenotypes and genotypes. Results: Among 14 children diagnosed with Gaucher disease, 9 were males and 5 were females, with the age of diagnosis ranging from 0.7 to 15.8 years. There were 10 patients with type 1 Gaucher disease, 2 patients with type 2, and 2 patients with type 3. The most common clinical manifestations were splenomegaly, thrombocytopenia (14 cases), hepatomegaly (8 cases) and anemia (8 cases). There were 6 patients with growth retardation, and 5 patients lag in height compared with their peers. Bone abnormalities were revealed by magnetic resonance imaging in 7 type 1 Gaucher disease patients, but only 1 patient experienced bone pain. Patients with type 2 and type 3 Gaucher disease also presented with convulsions, nystagmus and hearing loss. Gaucher cells were found in bone marrow smears in 12 patients. The glucocerebrosidase gene variations identified in 13 patients were heterozygous and in 1 type 1 patient was homozygous of L483P. L483P variation accounted for 33%(10/30) of the variation alleles, followed by V414L, D448H and R159W. The variation alleles were L483P and L422R, F252I and L483P in 2 children with severe neurological manifestations of Gaucher disease. A novel variation c.22A>G was detected. Conclusions: Splenomegaly and thrombocytopenia are the main clinical presentations of Gaucher disease in children and bone lesions revealed by radiologic imaging appear prior to the occurrence of bone diseases, type 2 and type 3 Gaucher disease also present growth retardation and neurological manifestation. The most frequent variant allele is L483P, which are detected in all 3 subtypes of Gaucher disease. The L422R, F252I gene variants correlated with the neuronopathic phenotype.

Mycorrhizal fungi alleviate acidification-induced phosphorus limitation: Evidence from a decade-long field experiment of simulated acid deposition in a tropical forest in south China. Abstract
South China has been experiencing very high rate of acid deposition and severe soil acidification in recent decades, which has been proposed to exacerbate the regional ecosystem phosphorus (P) limitation. We conducted a 10-year field experiment of simulated acid deposition to examine how acidification impacts seasonal changes of different soil P fractions in a tropical forest with highly acidic soils in south China. As expected, acid addition significantly increased occluded P pool but reduced the other more labile P pools in the dry season. In the wet season, however, acid addition did not change microbial P, soluble P and labile organic P pools. Acid addition significantly increased exchangeable Al3+ and Fe3+ and the activation of Fe oxides in both seasons. Different from the decline of microbial abundance in the dry season, acid addition increased ectomycorrhizal fungi and its ratio to arbuscular mycorrhiza fungi in the wet season, which significantly stimulated phosphomonoesterase activities and likely promoted the dissolution of occluded P. Our results suggest that, even in already highly acidic soils, the acidification-induced P limitation could be alleviated by stimulating ectomycorrhizal fungi and phosphomonoesterase activities. The differential responses and microbial controls of seasonal soil P transformation revealed here should be implemented into ecosystem biogeochemical model for predicting plant productivity under future acid deposition scenarios.

The role of PTEN in primary sensory neurons in processing itch and thermal information in mice. Cell Rep 2022; 39:110724. Abstract
PTEN is known as a tumor suppressor and plays essential roles in brain development. Here, we report that PTEN in primary sensory neurons is involved in processing itch and thermal information in adult mice. Deletion of PTEN in the dorsal root ganglia (DRG) is achieved in adult Drg11-CreER: PTENflox/flox (PTEN CKO) mice with oral administration of tamoxifen, and CKO mice develop pathological itch and elevated itch responses on exposure to various pruritogens. PTEN deletion leads to ectopic expression of TRPV1 and MrgprA3 in IB4+ non-peptidergic DRG neurons, and the TRPV1 is responsive to capsaicin. Importantly, the elevated itch responses are no longer present in Drg11-CreER: PTENflox/flox: TRPV1flox/flox (PTEN: TRPV1 dCKO) mice. In addition, thermal stimulation is enhanced in PTEN CKO mice but blunted in dCKO mice. PTEN-involved regulation of itch-related gene expression in DRG neurons provides insights for understanding molecular mechanism of itch and thermal sensation at the spinal level.

Abstract
In this study, an efficient screening method based on a modified quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe extraction method combined with ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to tandem quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry was established for the determination of 90 pesticides residues in Panax Ginseng. The accuracy of the method was then verified by analyzing the false positive rate and the screening detection limit in Ginseng. The results revealed that the screening detection limit of 33 of 90 pesticide residues were 0.01mg·kg-1 , 22 species were 0.05 mg·kg-1 , 11 species were 0.10 mg·kg-1 , 8 species were 0.20 mg·kg-1 , and another 16 species were greater than 0.20 mg·kg-1 . A total of 73 pesticides were ultimately suitable to be practically applied for rapid analysis of pesticide residues in Ginseng. Finally, the established method was used to analyze the pesticide residues in 35 Ginseng samples available on the market. And the residual of Dimethomorph, Azoxystrobin, Tebuconazole, Pyraclostrobin was relatively severe in Ginseng samples. This work expanded the range of pesticides detected and provided a rapid, effective method for pesticides screening in Ginseng. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

Abstract
The root of Panax quinquefolius L. (RPQ) is considered as an important functional food and rich in bioactive components, ginsenosides. To comprehensively characterize ginsenosides and evaluate the quality of RPQ from different sources, UPLC-Triple TOF-MS coupled with UFLC-ESI-MS/MS was applied to untargeted metabolites and targeted analysis for the first time. In untargeted metabolites analysis, a total of 225 ginsenosides were identified from RPQ using UPLC-Triple TOF-MS combined with SWATH data-independent strategy. Furthermore, the contents of 39 targeted ginsenoside markers in 14 RPQ samples were analyzed by a rapid and sensitive UFLC-ESI-MS/MS method. In addition, the results of chemometric analysis showed the quality of American RPQ was distinguished from that of Chinese RPQ according to the amount of targeted ginsenosides. This newly developed approach provides a powerful tool for enriching the diversity of saponins database and assessing the quality of RPQ, which can be further extended to other ginseng products and functional foods.

Exploring Lorentz Invariance Violation from Ultrahigh-Energy γ Rays Observed by LHAASO. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2022; 128:051102. Abstract
Recently, the LHAASO Collaboration published the detection of 12 ultrahigh-energy γ-ray sources above 100 TeV, with the highest energy photon reaching 1.4 PeV. The first detection of PeV γ rays from astrophysical sources may provide a very sensitive probe of the effect of the Lorentz invariance violation (LIV), which results in decay of high-energy γ rays in the superluminal scenario and hence a sharp cutoff of the energy spectrum. Two highest energy sources are studied in this work. No signature of the existence of the LIV is found in their energy spectra, and the lower limits on the LIV energy scale are derived. Our results show that the first-order LIV energy scale should be higher than about 10^{5} times the Planck scale M_{Pl} and that the second-order LIV scale is >10^{-3}M_{Pl}. Both limits improve by at least one order of magnitude the previous results.

Tropical tall forests are more sensitive and vulnerable to drought than short forests. GLOBAL CHANGE BIOLOGY 2022; 28:1583-1595. Abstract
Our limited understanding of the impacts of drought on tropical forests significantly impedes our ability in accurately predicting the impacts of climate change on this biome. Here, we investigated the impact of drought on the dynamics of forest canopies with different heights using time-series records of remotely sensed Ku-band vegetation optical depth (Ku-VOD), a proxy of top-canopy foliar mass and water content, and separated the signal of Ku-VOD changes into drought-induced reductions and subsequent non-drought gains. Both drought-induced reductions and non-drought increases in Ku-VOD varied significantly with canopy height. Taller tropical forests experienced greater relative Ku-VOD reductions during drought and larger non-drought increases than shorter forests, but the net effect of drought was more negative in the taller forests. Meta-analysis of in situ hydraulic traits supports the hypothesis that taller tropical forests are more vulnerable to drought stress due to smaller xylem-transport safety margins. Additionally, Ku-VOD of taller forests showed larger reductions due to increased atmospheric dryness, as assessed by vapor pressure deficit, and showed larger gains in response to enhanced water supply than shorter forests. Including the height-dependent variation of hydraulic transport in ecosystem models will improve the simulated response of tropical forests to drought.
