Miscarriage and stillbirth in relation to risk of cardiovascular diseases: A systematic review and meta-analysis

INTRODUCTION

The relationship between pregnancy loss and the risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) remains a matter of debate. Our intention in conducting this meta-analysis was to analyze the relationship between miscarriage and stillbirth and risk of CVDs.

METHODS

PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science were systematically searched up to May 30, 2023 for all relevant studies. The random-effects model was applied to estimate the pooled relative risks (RRs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs). We evaluated RR estimates for the risk of CVDs with each additional miscarriage and stillbirth through generalized least squares regression.

RESULTS

Twenty-three articles were incorporated into the meta-analysis. For women with a history of miscarriage, the pooled RRs for the risk of total CVDs, coronary heart disease (CHD), stroke, and total CVD deaths were 1.16 (95 % CI 1.10-1.22), 1.26 (1.12-1.41), 1.13 (1.03-1.24), and 1.20 (1.01-1.42), respectively. For women with a history of stillbirth, the pooled RRs for the risk of total CVDs, CHD, stroke, and total CVD deaths were 1.60 (1.34-1.89), 1.30 (1.12-1.50), 1.37 (1.06-1.78), and 1.95 (1.05-3.63), respectively. With each additional miscarriage, the risk increased for total CVDs (1.08, 1.04-1.13), CHD (1.08, 1.04-1.13), and stroke (1.05, 1.00-1.10). With each additional stillbirth, the risk increased for total CVDs (1.11, 1.03-1.21) and CHD (1.13, 1.07-1.19).

CONCLUSION

This meta-analysis indicates that both miscarriages and stillbirths are related to a higher risk of total CVDs, CHD, stroke, and total CVD deaths. The risk of total CVDs and CHD increased with the number of miscarriages or stillbirths.

Olive oil intake and cardiovascular disease, cancer, and all-cause mortality: a systematic review and dose-response meta-analysis of prospective cohort studies

Background: Currently, the reported links between olive oil intake and cardiovascular disease (CVD), cancer morbidity and mortality, and all-cause mortality are inconsistent. The aim of this meta-analysis is to study the reported correlations of olive oil intake with CVD, coronary heart disease (CHD), stroke and cancer incidence and mortality, and all-cause mortality. Methods: PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science were searched until March 7, 2024. Pooled relative risks (RRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated by the random-effects model. Nonlinear dose-response relationships were modeled with restricted cubic splines. This study has been registered at PROSPERO (CRD42023419001). Results: Overall, 30 articles covering 2 710 351 participants were identified. Higher olive oil intake was linked with a reduced risk of CVD incidence (RR: 0.85; 95% CI: 0.77, 0.93), CHD incidence (RR: 0.85; 95% CI: 0.72, 0.99), CVD mortality (RR: 0.77; 95% CI: 0.67, 0.88), and all-cause mortality (RR: 0.85; 95% CI: 0.81, 0.89). For a 10 g d-1 increment of olive oil intake, the risk of CVD incidence, stroke incidence, CVD mortality, and all-cause mortality decreased by 7%, 5%, 8%, and 8%, respectively. No association was found between olive oil intake and cancer incidence and mortality. Nonlinear relationships between olive oil intake and CVD and all-cause mortality were observed, with a reduced risk from intakes ranging from 0 to 18 g d-1 and 0 to 22 g d-1, respectively. Conclusion: Our study found that high olive oil intake was related to a lower risk of CVD and CHD incidence and CVD mortality and all-cause mortality.

Independent and joint associations of estimated cardiorespiratory fitness and its dynamic changes and obesity with the risk of hypertension: A prospective cohort

Our aim was to examine the independent and joint associations of estimated cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) and its changes and obesity with risk of hypertension in a rural Chinese population. A prospective cohort including 9848 adults without hypertension at baseline was enrolled. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) were estimated by logistic regression models. Restricted cubic splines were used to model the dose-response relationship. During 6 years follow-up, 2,019 individuals developed hypertension. A negative association between estimated CRF and hypertension incidence was observed, with the risk being 0.87 (0.84-0.90) per MET increment. For estimated CRF change, the risks of hypertension were 1.50 (1.27-1.77) and 0.75 (0.59-0.97) for decreasers and increasers, respectively, compared to maintainers. Joint analyses showed individuals in the overweight/obesity-fourth quartile of estimated CRF had a 2.08 times higher risk of hypertension than those in the normal weight-first quartile (Pinteraction < 0.05). Those overweight/obesity-decreasers had the highest risk (OR: 2.19, 95%CI: 1.71-2.81; Pinteraction < 0.05) compared to the normal-maintainers. Similar results for abdominal obesity were also observed. Estimated CRF and its dynamic changes showed a negative association with hypertension incidence in the rural Chinese population.

Associations of body mass index trajectory, waist circumference trajectory, or both with type 2 diabetes mellitus risk in Chinese adults: The China-PAR project

AIMS

To identify the trajectories of body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC), and assess the associations of BMI trajectory, WC trajectory, or the two combined, with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) risk in Chinese adults.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

This study was based on a prospective project-the Prediction for Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease Risk in China (China-PAR). A total of 54 434 participants (39.21% men) who were measured on at least two occasions were included. Three slowly increasing trajectory patterns were identified for BMI, and four for WC, by latent mixed modelling. A nine-category variable was derived by combining the WC trajectory (low, moderate, moderate-high/high) and the BMI trajectory (low, moderate, high). Logistic regression models were applied to estimate the odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs).

RESULTS

The risk of developing T2DM increased with elevated BMI or WC trajectory levels (all ptrend <0.001). The risks were 2.85 (2.59-3.14) for high BMI trajectory and 4.34 (3.78-4.99) for high WC trajectory versus low trajectory groups, respectively. The association was more pronounced among younger individuals (pinteraction <0.001). In the joint analysis, compared to participants with low WC and BMI trajectory, those with moderate-high/high WC combined with high BMI trajectory had the highest risk of T2DM (OR 3.96, 95% CI 3.48-4.50); even those who maintained moderate-high/high WC but low BMI trajectory showed a higher T2DM risk (OR 3.00, 95% CI 2.31-3.91).

CONCLUSIONS

This study suggests that simultaneous dynamic and continuous monitoring of BMI and WC may contribute more than single measurements to predicting T2DM risk and determining preventive strategies.

Influence of Zr Microalloying on the Microstructure and Room-/High-Temperature Mechanical Properties of an Al-Cu-Mn-Fe Alloy

Here, 0.3 wt.%Zr was introduced in an Al-4 wt.%Cu-0.5 wt.%Mn-0.1 wt.%Fe alloy to investigate its influence on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the alloy. The microstructures of both as-cast and T6-treated Al-Cu-Mn-Fe (ACMF) and Al-Cu-Mn-Fe-Zr (ACMFZ) alloys were analyzed. The intermetallic compounds formed through the casting procedure include Al2Cu and Al7Cu2Fe, and the Al2Cu phase dissolves into the matrix and re-precipitates as θ' phase during the T6 process. The introduction of Zr results in the precipitation of L12-Al3Zr nanometric precipitates after T6, while the θ' precipitates in ACMFZ alloy are much finer than those in ACMF alloy. The L12-Al3Zr precipitates were found coherently located with θ', which was assumed beneficial for stabilizing the θ' precipitates during the high-temperature tensile process. The tensile properties of ACMF and ACMFZ alloys at room temperature and elevated temperatures (200, 300, and 400 °C) were tested. Especially, the yield strength of ACMFZ alloys can reach 128 MPa and 65 MPa at 300 °C and 400 °C, respectively, which are 31% and 33% higher than those of ACMF alloys. The strengthening mechanisms of grain size, L12-Al3Zr, and θ' precipitates on the tensile properties were discussed. This work may be referred to for designing Al-Cu alloys for application in high-temperature fields.

Inhibition of 14-3-3 proteins increases the intrinsic excitability of mouse hippocampal CA1 pyramidal neurons

14-3-3 proteins are a family of regulatory proteins that are abundantly expressed in the brain and enriched at the synapse. Dysfunctions of these proteins have been linked to neurodevelopmental and neuropsychiatric disorders. Our group has previously shown that functional inhibition of these proteins by a peptide inhibitor, difopein, in the mouse brain causes behavioural alterations and synaptic plasticity impairment in the hippocampus. Recently, we found an increased cFOS expression in difopein-expressing dorsal CA1 pyramidal neurons, indicating enhanced neuronal activity by 14-3-3 inhibition in these cells. In this study, we used slice electrophysiology to determine the effects of 14-3-3 inhibition on the intrinsic excitability of CA1 pyramidal neurons from a transgenic 14-3-3 functional knockout (FKO) mouse line. Our data demonstrate an increase in intrinsic excitability associated with 14-3-3 inhibition, as well as reveal action potential firing pattern shifts after novelty-induced hyperlocomotion in the 14-3-3 FKO mice. These results provide novel information on the role 14-3-3 proteins play in regulating intrinsic and activity-dependent neuronal excitability in the hippocampus.

Dose-response associations of triglyceride to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio and triglyceride-glucose index with arterial stiffness risk

BACKGROUND

The triglyceride to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (TG/HDL-C) ratio and triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index are novel indexes for insulin resistance (IR). We aimed to evaluate associations of TG/HDL-C and TyG with arterial stiffness risk.

METHODS

We enrolled 1979 participants from the Rural Chinese Cohort Study, examining arterial stiffness by brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV). Logistic and linear regression models were employed to calculate effect estimates. For meta-analysis, we searched relevant articles from PubMed, Embase and Web of Science up to August 26, 2023. The fixed-effects or random-effects models were used to calculate the pooled estimates. We evaluated dose-response associations using restricted cubic splines.

RESULTS

For cross-sectional studies, the adjusted ORs (95%CIs) for arterial stiffness were 1.12 (1.01-1.23) and 1.78 (1.38-2.30) for per 1 unit increment in TG/HDL-C and TyG. In the meta-analysis, the pooled ORs (95% CIs) were 1.26 (1.14-1.39) and 1.57 (1.36-1.82) for per 1 unit increment of TG/HDL-C and TyG. Additionally, both TG/HDL-C and TyG were positively related to PWV, with β of 0.09 (95% CI 0.04-0.14) and 0.57 (95% CI 0.35-0.78) m/s. We also found linear associations of TG/HDL-C and TyG with arterial stiffness risk.

CONCLUSIONS

High TG/HDL-C and TyG were related to increased arterial stiffness risk, indicating TG/HDL-C and TyG may be convincing predictors of arterial stiffness.

Association between polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and periodontitis: Results from a large population-based study

AIM

To explore the association between polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) (measured using urinary metabolites) and periodontitis using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2009-2014.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Weighted binary logistic regression, Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) and weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression were used to evaluate independent and joint associations between the six urinary monohydroxylated metabolites of PAHs (OH-PAHs) and periodontitis.

RESULTS

In all, 3413 participants were included in this study. All six urinary OH-PAHs were present at higher levels in the periodontitis group compared with the non-periodontitis group (p < .001). Fully adjusted multivariable logistic regressions showed positive associations between the six urinary OH-PAHs and periodontitis (p < .05). Higher concentrations of OH-PAHs were also positively associated with attachment loss, periodontal pocket depth (PPD) and the number of tooth loss. BKMR and WQS regression yielded similar positive associations between OH-PAH mixtures and periodontitis.

CONCLUSIONS

PAHs and their mixture are positively associated with periodontitis, which may provide novel insights into periodontitis prevention from an environmental exposure perspective.

Visit to visit transition in TXNIP gene methylation and the risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus: a nested case-control study

Our study aimed to investigate the association between the transition of the TXNIP gene methylation level and the risk of incident type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). This study included 263 incident cases of T2DM and 263 matched non-T2DM participants. According to the methylation levels of five loci (CpG1-5; chr1:145441102-145442001) on the TXNIP gene, the participants were classified into four transition groups: maintained low, low to high, high to low, and maintained high methylation levels. Compared with individuals whose methylation level of CpG2-5 at the TXNIP gene was maintained low, individuals with maintained high methylation levels showed a 61-87% reduction in T2DM risk (66% for CpG2 [OR: 0.34, 95% CI: 0.14, 0.80]; 77% for CpG3 [OR: 0.23, 95% CI: 0.07, 0.78]; 87% for CpG4 [OR: 0.13, 95% CI: 0.03, 0.56]; and 61% for CpG5 [OR: 0.39, 95% CI: 0.16, 0.92]). Maintained high methylation levels of four loci of the TXNIP gene are associated with a reduction of T2DM incident risk in the current study. Our study suggests that preserving hypermethylation levels of the TXNIP gene may hold promise as a potential preventive measure against the onset of T2DM.

FOXM1 promotes the progression of non-small cell lung cancer by inhibiting miR-509-5p expression via binding to the miR-509-5p promoter region

Background

Forkhead box M1 (FOXM1) functions as a transcription factor and is consistently overexpressed in various cancers, including non-small-cell lung-, breast-, cervical-, and colorectal cancer. Its overexpression is associated with poor prognosis in patients with non-small-cell lung cancer, although the detailed mechanisms by which FOXM1 promotes the development of non-small-cell lung cancer remain unclear.

Objective

The mechanism of FOXM1 in migration, invasion, apoptosis, and viability of lung cancer cells was investigated.

Methods

Transwell assay, scratch test, and flow cytometry were employed to study the effects of FOXM1 on migration, invasion, and apoptosis in A549 cells. A quantitative polymerase chain reaction was used to determine the impact of FOXM1 on miR-509-5p expression in A549 cells. Dual-luciferase reporter gene assay and chromatin immunoprecipitation were adopted to investigate the molecular mechanisms of FOXM1 on miR-509-5p expression.

Results

FDI-6 (a FOXM1 inhibitor) reduced the protein abundance of FOXM1, thereby increasing the expression of miR-509-5p in A549 cells. Moreover, FDI-6 treatment significantly reduced migration, invasion, and viability of A549 cells while promoting cell apoptosis. Furthermore, miR-509-5p inhibitor obviously alleviated the biological effects of FDI-6 on A549 cells, suggesting that FOXM1 primarily exerted its cancer promoting effect by regulating miR-509-5p. Mechanistically, FOXM1 directly bound to the miR-509-5p promoter to inhibit miR-509-5p expression.

Conclusion

FOXM1 directly binds to the promoter region of miR-509-5p to form a negative feedback loop, thereby inhibiting miR-509-5p expression and promoting the development of non-small-cell lung cancer. This study is expected to complement research on the pathogenesis of non-small-cell lung cancer and promote the development of novel therapeutic targets for this disease.

Copine proteins are required for brassinosteroid signaling in maize and Arabidopsis

Copine proteins are highly conserved and ubiquitously found in eukaryotes, and their indispensable roles in different species were proposed. However, their exact function remains unclear. The phytohormone brassinosteroids (BRs) play vital roles in plant growth, development and environmental responses. A key event in effective BR signaling is the formation of functional BRI1-SERK receptor complex and subsequent transphosphorylation upon ligand binding. Here, we demonstrate that BONZAI (BON) proteins, which are plasma membrane-associated copine proteins, are critical components of BR signaling in both the monocot maize and the dicot Arabidopsis. Biochemical and molecular analyses reveal that BON proteins directly interact with SERK kinases, thereby ensuring effective BRI1-SERK interaction and transphosphorylation. This study advances the knowledge on BR signaling and provides an important target for optimizing valuable agronomic traits, it also opens a way to study steroid hormone signaling and copine proteins of eukaryotes in a broader perspective.

Association of methylation risk score with incident type 2 diabetes mellitus: A nested case-control study

AIMS

To investigate the association of methylation risk score (MRS) and its interactions with environmental factors with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) risk.

METHODS

We conducted a nested case-control study with 241 onset cases and 241 matched controls. Conditional logistic regression models were employed to identify risk CpG sites. Simple and weighted MRSs were constructed based on the methylation levels of ATP-binding cassette G1 gene, fat mass and obesity associated gene, potassium voltage-gated channel member 1 gene, and thioredoxin-interacting protein gene previously associated with T2DM to estimate the association of MRS with T2DM risk. Stratified analyses were used to investigate interactions between MRS and environmental factors.

RESULTS

A total of 10 CpG loci were identified from the aforementioned genes to calculate MRS. After controlling for potential confounding factors, taking tertile 1 as reference, the odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for T2DM of tertile 3 was 2.39 (1.36-4.20) for simple MRS and 2.59 (1.45-4.63) for weighted MRS. With per SD score increment in MRS, the OR (95% CI) was 1.66 (1.29-2.14) and 1.60 (1.24-2.08) for simple and weighted MRSs, respectively. J-curved associations were observed between both simple and weighted MRSs and T2DM risks. Additionally, multiplication interactions for smoking and hypertension with simple MRS on the risk of T2DM were found, similarly for smoking and obesity with weighted MRS on the risk of T2DM (all Pinteraction  < .05).

CONCLUSION

Elevated simple and weighted MRSs were associated with increased risk of T2DM. Environmental risk factors may influence the association between MRS and T2DM.

Obesity and risk of depressive disorder in children and adolescents: A meta-analysis of observational studies

PURPOSE

This meta-analysis evaluated the relationship between overweight/obesity and depressive disorders in children and adolescents.

METHODS

We examined the databases of PubMed, Embase and Web of Science for pertinent observational studies released up until 20 February 2022. The pooled relative risks (RRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of obesity and overweight with depressive disorder were calculated by means of random-effects models. The Newcastle-Ottawa Quality Assessment Scale and Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality scale were adopted to evaluate the study quality.

RESULTS

Finally, for this meta-analysis, we evaluated 22 observational publications covering 175 135 participants (5 cohort study articles, 1 case-control study article and 16 cross-sectional study articles). A significant positive association was found between obesity and the risk of depression (RR 1.32, 95% CI 1.09-1.60, I2  = 79.90%, Pheterogeneity  < 0.001) and in the association between obesity and depressive symptoms (RR 1.16, 95% CI: 1.00-1.35, I2  = 25.0%, Pheterogeneity  = 0.247). On sensitivity analysis, the pooled RRs remained robust. Subgroup analysis indicated that obese children and teenagers in western countries were more prone to depression.

CONCLUSION

Evidence from this meta-analysis, based on observational studies, supported the idea that obese children and adolescents are more likely to experience depression and depressive symptoms.

Associations of Urinary Total Arsenic and Arsenic Species and Periodontitis

AIMS

Arsenic exposure is a significant global public health concern and has been implicated in endocrine disruption and increased oxidative stress, both of which are crucial pathogenic mechanisms of periodontitis. This study aimed to investigate the association of urinary total arsenic and arsenic species with periodontitis and to further explore the potential mediating roles of sex hormones and oxidative stress indicators.

METHODS

Data used in this study were derived from the 2013-2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) in the US population. In all, 1063 participants with complete data were included in this study. Weighted logistic regression analyses were used to evaluate the relationship between urinary arsenic and periodontitis. Mediation analyses were used to explore the effects of potential mediators on these associations.

RESULTS

High concentrations of urinary dimethylarsinic acid (DMA), monomethylarsonic acid (MMA), 2 types of toxic urinary arsenic (TUA2), and 4 types of toxic urinary arsenic (TUA4) were positively related to periodontitis (P < .05). After adjusting for potential confounders, the positive association remained significant (odds ratio, 1.32; 95% confidence interval, 1.01-1.71). Testosterone may partially mediate the relationship between MMA and periodontitis, with mediating effects of 21.78% and 39.73% of the total effect. No significant mediation effect of oxidative stress indicators was found for this relationship.

CONCLUSIONS

This study reports a positive association between urinary MMA and periodontitis, and testosterone may mediate this relationship. Our findings serve as a call for action to avoid the deployment of arsenic-containing therapeutic agents as treatment modalities for oral afflictions.

Association of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) with periodontitis: the mediating role of sex hormones

OBJECTIVES

To investigate the association between serum per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and periodontitis, and further explore the possible mediating role of sex hormones in this association.

METHODS

We extracted data from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2009-2014. Univariable and multivariable logistic regression models were performed to investigate the association between serum levels of seven PFASs and periodontitis. Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) was conducted to assess the joint effect of PFASs in mixtures. Mediation analyses were used to explore the potential mediating role of sex hormones.

RESULTS

Participants with periodontitis had higher concentrations of serum perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA) than those without periodontitis (both P < 0.05). In fully adjusted models, high serum concentrations of PFOS and PFNA were positively associated with periodontitis (tertile 3 vs. tertile 1: prevalence ratio (PR) = 1.19 for PFOS, 95% CI: 1.01-1.39; PR = 1.17 for PFNA, 95% CI: 1.02-1.34). The results from the BKMR models consistently showed a positive association between PFAS mixtures and periodontitis. Of note, testosterone and the ratio of testosterone to estradiol significantly mediated the relationship between high level of PFOS and periodontitis, accounting for 16.5% and 31.7% of the total effect, respectively. Sensitivity analyses yielded similar results when using periodontal clinical indices (mean loss of attachment, mean periodontal probing depth, and the number of teeth) as dependent variables.

CONCLUSIONS

These findings provide evidence to support a positive association between certain PFASs and periodontitis, which might be partially mediated by sex hormones.

Association between Mediterranean diet and periodontitis among US adults: The mediating roles of obesity indicators

OBJECTIVE

This study aimed to assess the association between the Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) and periodontitis in US adults and to further explore the mediating roles of obesity indicators in this association.

BACKGROUND DATA

The relationship between MedDiet and periodontitis is controversial. And it is unclear whether obesity indicators are potential mediators of this relationship.

METHODS

Using data derived from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2009-2014). Weighted binary logistic regression and restricted cubic spline were used to assess the association between MedDiet and periodontitis. Weighted ordinal logistic regression was performed to evaluate the relationship between MedDiet and periodontitis severity. The mediating roles of body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference in the relationship between the MedDiet and periodontitis were explored. Association analyses were further performed using mean clinical attachment loss (CAL) or mean periodontal probing depth (PPD) as dependent variables. The false discovery rate method was used to correct the p-values in the regression analyses.

RESULTS

A total of 8290 eligible participants (4159 participants with periodontitis and 4131 without periodontitis) were included. A negative association between the MedDiet adherence score and periodontitis was observed in the binary logistic regression model (adjusted odds ratio = 0.94, 95% confidence interval: 0.90-0.97, p = .001). Restricted cubic spline regression revealed a dose-response relationship between the MedDiet adherence score and periodontitis. BMI and waist circumference significantly mediate this association, with mediation proportions of 9.7% (p = .032) and 9.3% (p = .012), respectively. Multivariable ordinal logistic regression showed that the MedDiet adherence score was negatively associated with the severity of periodontitis (all p < .05). Additionally, the MedDiet adherence score was negatively associated with mean PPD or mean CAL (all p < .05).

CONCLUSIONS

This study suggests a significant negative association between adherence to the MedDiet and periodontitis and a possible mediating role of obesity indicators in this association. Furthermore, studies are still warranted to confirm our findings.

The Double-Edged Sword Effect of Leaders' Fear of Missing Out on Leaders' Creativity: An Experience Sampling Method Study

Purpose

Fear of Missing out (FoMO) is a widely observed phenomenon in the workplace. Previous research has primarily focused on employees' FoMO, with limited exploration of leaders' FoMO and its impact on their creativity. This study aims to investigate how leaders' FoMO affects their creativity, based on the transactional stress theory.

Patients and Methods

Using an experience sampling method, we collected 836 observations from 102 leaders across various industries in China for two consecutive weeks (10 working days). Subsequently, hierarchical regression analysis and structural equation modeling were employed to test the hypotheses.

Results

This study suggests that both challenge stress and hindrance stress mediate the relationship between leaders' FoMO and their creativity. Role breadth self-efficacy moderates the relationship between leaders' FoMO and challenge stress and hindrance stress, and moderates the positive and negative mediating effects of challenge stress and hindrance stress in the relationship between leaders' FoMO and their creativity.

Conclusion

Research has shown that leaders' FoMO can either enhance creative performance by increasing challenge stress or inhibit it by increasing hindrance stress. Role breadth self-efficacy significantly amplifies the positive relationship between leaders' FoMO and challenge stress, while moderating the negative effect of leaders' FoMO on hindrance stress.

Innovations

Firstly, this study expands workplace FoMO research by illustrating the double-edged sword effect of leaders' FoMO on their creativity. Secondly, this study contributes to the academic community's comprehension of the underlying mechanisms linking leaders' FoMO and its outcomes by demonstrating the mediating role of challenge stress and hindrance stress. Thirdly, the study shows the boundary conditions for the effects of leaders' FoMO by validating the moderating role of their role breadth self-efficacy.

[Comparing the prognostic value of 3 diagnostic criteria of bronchopulmonary dysplasia in preterm infants]

Objective: To compare the prognostic value of 3 diagnostic criteria of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) in preterm infants with gestational age<32 weeks. Methods: The retrospective cohort study was conducted to collect the clinical data of 285 preterm infants with BPD admitted to the Department of Neonatology, Children's Hospital Affiliated to Zhengzhou University from January 2019 to September 2021, who were followed up regularly after discharge. The primary composite adverse outcome was defined as death or severe respiratory morbidity from 36 weeks of corrected gestational age to 18 months of corrected age, and the secondary composite adverse outcome was defined as death or neurodevelopmental impairment. According to the primary or secondary composite adverse outcomes, the preterm infants were divided into the adverse prognosis group and the non-adverse prognosis group. The 2001 National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) criteria, 2018 NICHD criteria, and 2019 Neonatal Research Network (NRN) criteria were used to diagnose and grade BPD in preterm infants. Chi-square test, Logistic regression analysis, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and Delong test were used to analyze the prognostic value of the 3 diagnostic criteria. Results: The 285 preterm infants had a gestational age of 29.4 (28.1, 30.6) weeks and birth weight of 1 230 (1 000, 1 465) g, including 167 males (58.6%). Among 285 premature infants who completed follow-up, the primary composite adverse outcome occurred in 124 preterm infants (43.5%), and the secondary composite adverse outcome occurred in 40 preterm infants (14.0%). Multivariate Logistic regression analysis showed that severe BPD according to the 2001 NICHD criteria, gradeⅡand Ⅲ BPD according to the 2018 NICHD criteria and grade 2 and 3 BPD according to the 2019 NRN criteria were all risk factors for primary composite adverse outcomes (all P<0.05). ROC curve showed that the area under the curve (AUC) of the 2018 NICHD criteria and 2019 NRN criteria were both higher than that of the 2001 NICHD criteria (0.70 and 0.70 vs. 0.61, Z=4.49 and 3.35, both P<0.001), but there was no significant difference between the 2018 NICHD and 2019 NRN criteria (Z=0.38, P=0.702). Multivariate Logistic regression analysis showed that the secondary composite adverse outcomes were all associated with grade Ⅲ BPD according to the 2018 NICHD criteria and grade 3 BPD according to the 2019 NRN criteria (both P<0.05). ROC curve showed that the AUC of the 2018 NICHD criteria and 2019 NRN criteria were both higher than that of the 2001 NICHD criteria (0.71 and 0.71 vs. 0.58, Z=2.93 and 3.67, both P<0.001), but there was no statistically significant difference between the 2018 NICHD and 2019 NRN criteria (Z=0.02, P=0.984). Conclusion: The 2018 NICHD and 2019 NRN criteria demonstrate good and comparable predictive value for the primary and secondary composite adverse outcomes in preterm infants with BPD, surpassing the predictive efficacy of the 2001 NICHD criteria.

Structural characterization and anti-inflammatory effects of Enteromorpha prolifera polysaccharide-Fe/Zn complexes

The structure of polysaccharide has a great influence on its biological functions, and the chelation with metal ions is an effective way to change polysaccharide structural configuration. Herein, the structure of Enteromorpha prolifera polysaccharide (EP)-Fe/Zn complexes were characterized and the results showed that the iron (III) existed in form of β-FeOOH in EP-Fe (III) complex and the zinc (II) existed in form of C-O-Zn in EP-Zn (II) complex. Besides, the chelation with iron (III) or zinc (II) completely changed the apparent forms, and improved the thermal stability of EP. Furthermore, the anti-inflammatory activities of EP, EP-Fe and EP-Zn were proved by a lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced RAW264.7 macrophages model. The results showed that EP, EP-Fe (III) and EP-Zn (II) could decrease the mitochondrial membrane potential and the secretion of NO and cytokines induced by LPS. One of the anti-inflammatory mechanisms of EP, EP-Fe (III) and EP-Zn (II) was that they could inhibit mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling pathway via increasing its inhibitor content in cells. Collectively, the research suggested that the chelation with iron (III) or zinc (II) could change the structure and improve the anti-inflammatory activities of EP.

[Application status and progress of intraoperative nerve monitoring in pelvic autonomic nerve preserving radical resection of rectal cancer]

The current treatment strategy for rectal cancer is a comprehensive treatment centered on surgery. The application of total mesorectal excision (TME) has significantly reduced the local recurrence rate and improved the survival prognosis, but a series of pelvic organ dysfunction caused by pelvic autonomic nerve injury during the operation will reduce the postoperative quality of life of patients. Pelvic autonomic nerve preserving (PANP) radical proctectomy has emerged, but the biggest challenge in the implementation process of this technology is the accurate identification of nerves. A series of studies have shown that pelvic intraoperative autonomic monitoring (pIONM) can effectively assist surgeons to identify nerves, The purpose of this article is to introduce the function of pelvic autonomic nerve, the clinical manifestation of postoperative pelvic dysfunction and its relationship with nerve injury, the key points of implementing PANP, and the current situation and research progress of pIONM technology application.

[Situational analysis of periodontal disease burden for adults in China from 1990 to 2019 and its incidence trend prediction]

Objective: To analyze the burden and changing trends of periodontal disease in adults of the mainland of China from 1990 to 2019, and to predict the incidence trends of periodontal disease in the next 25 years, with a goal to provide a basis for reducing the burden of periodontal disease and formulating relevant prevention and treatment measures. Methods: Data on the incidence, prevalence, and disability adjusted life years (DALY) rate of periodontal disease among adults in the mainland of China from 1990 to 2019 were extracted from the global burden of disease study 2019 (GBD 2019) database. The estimated annual percent change (EAPC) was used to estimate the temporal trend of periodontal disease, and the age-period-cohort model (APC) was used to predict the age-standardized incidence of periodontal disease in Chinese adults from 2020 to 2044. Results: From 1990 to 2019, the incidence, prevalence, and DALY rate of adult periodontal disease in the mainland of China showed an increasing trend, with EAPCs of 0.3 (95%CI: 0.1-0.6), 0.5 (95%CI: 0.1-0.8), and 0.5 (95%CI: 0.1-0.8), respectively. The incidence and prevalence of periodontitis among the population aged 35-39 years old and 40-44 years old increased the most significantly, with EAPCs of 0.8 and 0.7, respectively, whereas the change in periodontal disease prevalence tended to be stable and the increase trend in prevalence was lower in the elderly group (EAPC=0.4). The incidence (EAPC=2.1), prevalence (EAPC=2.6) and DALY rate (EAPC=2.6) of periodontal disease in females increased more than those in males (EAPC=1.9, 2.4, and 2.4, respectively), of which the prevalence had exceeded that of males in 2019. The APC model predicted that the prevalence of periodontal disease in the period of 2020-2044 in China would still be on an upward trend, and the increase rate would be higher in females than in males. Conclusions: The burden of periodontal disease among adults in China had been increasing over the past 30 years, especially among young and middle-aged adults as well as females, and the incidence of periodontal disease will continue to increase over the next 25 years.

The impact of Sars-Cov-2 infection on the wound healing of cervical treatment in patients with squamous intraepithelial lesions: a retrospective cohort study

Objective

SARS-CoV-2 infection has been associated with an increase in inflammatory factors, a weakening of the immune system, and a potentially delay in wound healing following surgery or ablative treatment. In this retrospective cohort study, we aimed to investigate the impact of SARS-CoV-2 infection on wound healing following cervical treatment in patients with squamous intraepithelial lesions (SIL).

Method

From November 2022 to February 2023, patients with SIL who underwent cervical ablative treatment or loop electrosurgical excision procedure at the People's Hospital of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, China, were enrolled in the study. Of these, 29 patients who developed symptoms of SARS-CoV-2 infection and confirmed by an antigen test within one month after cervical treatment were included as experimental group, while the other 31 patients who received cervical treatment after recovering from SARS-CoV-2 infection were included in the control group. The cervical wound condition of all patients was documented using colposcopy immediately and one month after the procedure. Image J software was utilized to analyze the wound healing rate at one month post-treatment, and the wound healing status between two groups was compared. A vaginal discharge examination was performed before and one month after cervical treatment.

Results

No significant differences in age, severity, treatment, or time between groups. Experimental group had significantly lower healing rate 83.77(62.04, 97.09) % than control 98.64(97.10, 99.46)%，p < 0.001, and a higher scab non-shedding rate (24.14% vs. 3.22%, p = 0.024). Among patients who were infected with SARS-CoV-2 after undergoing cervical treatment, we observed 5 out of 7 patients (71.43%) contracted SARS-CoV-2 within 2 weeks after cervical treatment. No significant correlation was found between white blood cell count or leukocyte esterase in vaginal discharge and delayed wound healing of the cervix (p = 0.947 and 0.970, respectively).

Conclusion

SARS-CoV-2 infection may prolong the healing time of cervical treatment in patients with SIL. To minimize the risk of delayed healing, it's crucial for patients to avoid viral infections such as SARS-CoV-2 within the first month of treatment. Taking necessary precautions to prevent infection is essential for successful cervical treatment outcomes in patients with SIL.

The value of MRI in predicting hepatocellular carcinoma with cytokeratin 19 expression: a systematic review and meta-analysis

AIM

To evaluate the overall diagnostic performance of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), different image features, and different image analysis methods in predicting hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) with cytokeratin 19 (CK19) expression.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A systematic literature search was performed to identify studies using MRI to predict HCC with CK19 expression between 2012 and 2023. Data were extracted to calculate the pooled sensitivity and specificity. Overall diagnostic performance was assessed using areas under the summary receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC). Subgroup analyses were conducted for specific image features and according to image analysis methods (traditional image feature, radiomics, and combined methods). Z-test statistics was used to analyse the differences in diagnostic performance between combined and individual methods.

RESULTS

Eleven studies with 14 datasets (1,278 lesions from 1,264 patients) were included. The overall pooled sensitivity, specificity, and AUC with corresponding 95% confidence intervals were estimated to be 0.72 (0.55, 0.85), 0.88 (0.80, 0.93), and 0.89 (0.86, 0.91) for MRI in predicting HCC with CK19 expression. Combined methods had higher sensitivity than image feature methods (0.86 versus 0.54, p=0.001), with no difference in specificity (0.85 versus 0.87, p=0.641). There were no significant differences between radiomics and combined methods regarding sensitivity (p=0.796) and specificity (p=0.535), respectively.

CONCLUSION

MRI shows moderate sensitivity and high specificity in identifying HCC with CK19 expression. The application of radiomics can improve the sensitivity of MRI in identifying HCC with CK19 expression.

[Study on formulation and revision of standard limits for radon in "Standards for indoor air quality (GB/T 18883-2022)" in China]

Public exposure to radon has attracted increasing public concern. The newly issued "Standards for indoor air quality (GB/T 18883-2022)" has revised the radiological parameters of radon. This study analyzed and discussed the relevant technical contents about the derivation of radon limit, including the distribution level for indoor radon, exposure pathway, health effects, and the process for establishing the standard limits. Specific implementation and evaluation suggestions are also proposed.

The associations of coffee consumption, coffee types, and caffeine metabolites with periodontitis: Results from NHANES 2009-2014

BACKGROUND

Coffee is one of the world's most popular beverages and is the main dietary source of caffeine for most people. The various molecular effects of caffeine suggest that it may enhance bone loss. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the relationship of coffee, coffee types, and caffeine metabolites with periodontitis.

METHODS

Data were obtained from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2009-2014. Total coffee and different types of coffee consumption were acquired through a 24-h dietary recall. Urinary caffeine metabolites were quantified using high-performance liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-tandem quadrupole mass spectrometry (HPLC-ESI-MS/MS). The association of coffee, coffee types, and caffeine metabolites with periodontitis and its severity were assessed using multivariable logistic regression.

RESULTS

A total of 3309 eligible participants were included. After adjusting for potential confounding variables, a positive association was observed between coffee consumption (particularly certain types of coffee) and periodontitis. Notably, a positive correlation was also found between total coffee intake and the severity of periodontitis. Additionally, for urinary caffeine metabolites, there was a significant positive association between 1-methyluric acid (1-MU), 1,3-dimethyluric acid (1,3-DMU), 3,7-dimethyluric acid (3,7-DMU), 1,7-dimethylxanthine (1,7-DMX), or 5-actlyamino-6-amino-3-methyluracil (AAMU) and periodontitis, with adjusted odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals of 1.10 (1.02, 1.19), 1.86 (1.05, 3.29), 0.94 (0.90, 0.98), 1.29 (1.03, 1.62), and 1.15 (1.05, 1.26), respectively.

CONCLUSIONS

The present study suggests a positive association of coffee intake (especially certain coffee types) and caffeine metabolites (1-MU, 1,3-DMU, 3,7-DMU, 1,7-DMX, and AAMU) with periodontitis and its severity.

Effects of cadmium exposure on metabolism, antioxidant defense, immune function, and the hepatopancreas transcriptome of Cipangopaludina cathayensis

Cadmium (Cd) is a common contaminant in aquatic environments. However, little is known about the mechanisms underlying Cd toxicity in the freshwater snail Cipangopaludina cathayensis (Heude, 1890). This study to investigate the toxic effects of Cd on the standard metabolism, antioxidant activities, immune function, and hepatopancreas transcriptome profiles of C. cathayensis. C. cathayensis was exposed to 0.25, 0.5, 1.0, or 1.5 mg/L Cd for 3 h, with results showing that Cd significantly inhibited oxygen consumption and ammonia excretion and disrupted the respiratory metabolism of C. cathayensis. In addition, the O:N ratio dropped below 7, indicating that C. cathayensis may rely exclusively on proteins as an energy source under Cd stress. To understand how Cd impacts the antioxidant activities, immune function, and transcriptional profiles, C. cathayensis were exposed to 0.5 (low exposure, L14) or 1.5 (high exposure, H14) mg/L Cd for 14 days. Our results indicate that Cd exposure leads to oxidative stress and immunosuppression, with the latter effect being larger for exposure to higher Cd concentrations. A total of 2172 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified by transcriptome analysis of the hepatopancreas, of which 885 were upregulated and 1287 were downregulated. Gene ontology and KEGG analyses revealed that the DEGs in the H14 group are enriched for energy generation terms and the "oxidative phosphorylation" pathway, respectively. Therefore, up-regulation of energy metabolism may be an adaptive strategy under Cd stress. Moreover, several genes involved in antioxidant activity were downregulated, whereas genes related to reactive oxygen species generation were upregulated. In addition, many immunity-related genes were identified within the DEGs, indicating that Cd toxicity may affect immune defense. Further, DEGs in the H14 group were enriched for disease-associated pathways. Taken together, our results indicate that Cd exposure leads to metabolic disorders, oxidative stress, and immunosuppression and thus may potentially contribute to disease outbreaks.

Association of remnant cholesterol with hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and their coexistence: the mediating role of inflammation-related indicators

PURPOSE

Cholesterol metabolism is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease, and recent studies have shown that cholesterol metabolism poses a residual risk of cardiovascular disease even when conventional lipid risk factors are in the optimal range. The association between remnant cholesterol (RC) and cardiovascular disease has been demonstrated; however, its association with hypertension, type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and the concomitance of the two diseases requires further study. This study aimed to evaluate the association of RC with hypertension, T2DM, and both in a large sample of the U.S. population, and to further explore the potential mechanisms involved.

METHODS

This cross-sectional study used data from the 2005-2018 cycles of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (N = 17,749). Univariable and multivariable logistic regression analyses were performed to explore the relationships of RC with hypertension, T2DM, and both comorbidities. A restricted cubic spline regression model was used to reveal the dose effect. Mediation analyses were performed to explore the potential mediating roles of inflammation-related indicators in these associations.

RESULTS

Of the 17,749 participants included (mean [SD] age: 41.57 [0.23] years; women: 8983 (50.6%), men: 8766 (49.4%)), the prevalence of hypertension, T2DM, and their co-occurrence was 32.6%, 16.1%, and 11.0%, respectively. Higher RC concentrations were associated with an increased risk of hypertension, T2DM, and their co-occurrence (adjusted odds ratios for per unit increase in RC were 1.068, 2.259, and 2.362, and 95% confidence intervals were 1.063-1.073, 1.797-2.838, and 1.834-3.041, respectively), with a linear dose-response relationship. Even when conventional lipids were present at normal levels, positive associations were observed. Inflammation-related indicators (leukocytes, lymphocytes, monocytes, and neutrophils) partially mediated these associations. Among these, leukocytes had the greatest mediating effect (10.8%, 14.5%, and 14.0%, respectively).

CONCLUSION

The results of this study provide evidence that RC is associated with the risk of hypertension, T2DM, and their co-occurrence, possibly mediated by an inflammatory response.

[Study on the association between air pollution and respiratory disease of primary school students in Chongqing City]

To analyze the association between exposure to air pollution and respiratory disease of primary school students in Chongqing City. Eight districts and counties were randomly selected based on the air pollution situation in Chongqing City. In each selected district and county, one primary school was randomly selected. A questionnaire survey was conducted on all primary school students in Grades 3-5 by the end of 2019. Air quality data from the nearest environmental monitoring sites were collected. A logistic regression model was used to analyze the impact of the living environment, lifestyle and air pollution on the respiratory disease of surveyed students. This study included 5 918 primary school students, with a prevalence rate of respiratory disease of 21.54%. The prevalence rates of boys and girls were 23.38% and 19.59%, respectively. The average Air quality index (AQI) of the surveyed school was 67, and the rates of exceeding standards of PM10, PM2.5, NO2 and O3 were 1.16%, 6.92%, 0.99% and 5.65%, respectively. The level of SO2 and CO did not exceed the standard. After adjusting for relevant factors, logistic regression analysis showed that primary school students in areas with high exposure to air pollution (OR=2.52), using air pollution related-chemicals at home (OR=1.47), passive smoking (OR=1.27), and keeping pets at home (OR=1.18) had a higher risk of respiratory disease (all P<0.05). In addition, the average annual values of AQI (OR=1.18), PM10 (OR=1.20), PM2.5 (OR=1.35), and NO2 (OR=1.11) increased the risk of respiratory diseases in primary school students (all P<0.05). In conclusion, the respiratory disease of primary school students in Chongqing City is related to the living environment, behavior habits and ambient air quality. The increased exposure concentration of PM10, PM2.5 and NO2 in air pollutants can lead to an increased risk of respiratory disease among primary school students.

Changes in the global burden of foreign body aspiration among under-5 children from 1990 to 2019

Background

To evaluate the changes in the global burden of foreign body aspiration (FBA) among children under 5 years old at regional, age, sex, and socio-demographic index (SDI) levels between 1990 and 2019.

Methods

Data on FBA was derived from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Study 2019 database on pulmonary aspiration and foreign body in airway. The means and 95% uncertainty intervals (UIs) were calculated for incidence, and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs). The temporal trends were represented by estimated annual percentage change (EAPC) using Joinpoint regression.

Results

Globally, FBA caused 109.6 (95% UI: 69.5, 175.7) per 100,000 incidence and 317.9 (95% UI: 270.7, 372.4) per 100,000 DALYs under 5 years old in 2019. Many European countries (such as Italy, Netherlands, Iceland, etc.) showed a high incidence rate, but did not cause a large disease burden (DALYs all less than 200 per 100,000). Compared to 1990, although a decrease in both incidence and DALYs occurred in 2019, the Joinpoint regression showed an increasing trend in incidence rate from 2014 to 2019 [APC: both (2.10), female (2.25), male (1.98), P < 0.05)], especially China, Netherlands, and Malta. Despite the lower incidence rate in early neonatal group and middle SDI areas, they instead resulted in higher DALYs than other age groups and areas.

Conclusion

Although declines occurred in incidence and DALYs of FBA among children under 5 years of age from 1990 to 2014, an upward trend began to emerge from 2014 to 2019. The incidence and DALY rates were correlated with age and SDI. Increased efforts are needed to improve the necessary monitoring and reporting systems, hazard assessment, and public education activities.

Single-cell RNA-Seq and bulk RNA-Seq reveal reliable diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers for CRC

PURPOSE

The potential role of epithelium-specific genes through the adenoma-carcinoma sequence in the development of colorectal cancer (CRC) remains unknown. Therefore, we integrated single-cell RNA sequencing and bulk RNA sequencing data to select diagnosis and prognosis biomarkers for CRC.

METHODS

The CRC scRNA-seq dataset was used to describe the cellular landscape of normal intestinal mucosa, adenoma and CRC and to further select epithelium-specific clusters. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) of epithelium-specific clusters were identified between intestinal lesion and normal mucosa in the scRNA-seq data throughout the adenoma-carcinoma sequence. Diagnostic biomarkers and prognostic biomarker (the risk score) for CRC were selected in the bulk RNA-seq dataset based on DEGs shared by the adenoma epithelium-specific cluster and the CRC epithelium-specific cluster (shared-DEGs).

RESULTS

Among the 1063 shared-DEGs, we selected 38 gene expression biomarkers and 3 methylation biomarkers that had promising diagnostic power in plasma. Multivariate Cox regression identified  174 shared-DEGs as prognostic genes for CRC. We combined 1000 times LASSO-Cox regression and two-way stepwise regression to select 10 prognostic shared-DEGs to construct the risk score in the CRC meta-dataset. In the external validation dataset, the 1- and 5-year AUCs of the risk score were higher than those of stage, the pyroptosis-related genes (PRG) score and the cuproptosis-related genes (CRG) score. In addition, the risk score was closely associated with the immune infiltration of CRC.

CONCLUSION

The combined analysis of the scRNA-seq dataset and the bulk RNA-seq dataset in this study provides reliable biomarkers for the diagnosis and prognosis of CRC.

Spontaneous movement of a retrotransposon generated genic dominant male sterility providing a useful tool for rice breeding

Male sterility in plants provides valuable breeding tools in germplasm innovation and hybrid crop production. However, genetic resources for dominant genic male sterility, which hold great promise to facilitate breeding processes, are extremely rare in natural germplasm. Here we characterized the Sanming Dominant Genic Male Sterility in rice and identified the gene SDGMS using a map-based cloning approach. We found that spontaneous movement of a 1978-bp long terminal repeat (LTR) retrotransposon into the promoter region of the SDGMS gene activates its expression in anther tapetum, which causes abnormal programmed cell death of tapetal cells resulting in dominant male sterility. SDGMS encodes a ribosome inactivating protein showing N-glycosidase activity. The activation of SDGMS triggers transcription reprogramming of genes responsive to biotic stress leading to a hypersensitive response which causes sterility. The results demonstrate that an ectopic gene activation by transposon movement can give birth to a novel trait which enriches phenotypic diversity with practical utility.

Dietary lysozyme improves growth performance and intestinal barrier function of weaned piglets

Lysozyme (LZ) is a purely natural, nonpolluting and nonspecific immune factor, which has beneficial effects on the healthy development of animals. In this study, the influences of LZ on the growth performance and intestinal barrier of weaned piglets were studied. A total of 48 weaned piglets (Landrace × Yorkshire, 22 d old) were randomly divided into a control group (basal diet) and a LZ group (0.1% LZ diet) for 19 d. The results showed that LZ could significantly improve the average daily gain (ADG, P < 0.05) and average daily feed intake (ADFI, P < 0.05). LZ also improved the intestinal morphology and significantly increased the expression of occludin in the jejunum (P < 0.05). In addition, LZ down-regulated the expression of interleukin-1β (IL-1β, P < 0.05) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α, P < 0.05), and inhibited the expression of the genes in the nuclear factor-k-gene binding (NF-κB, P < 0.05) signaling pathway. More importantly, the analysis of intestinal flora showed LZ increased the abundance of Firmicutes (P < 0.05) and the ratio of Firmicutes to Bacteroidota (P = 0.09) at the phylum level, and increased the abundance of Clostridium_sensu_stricto_1 (P < 0.05) and reduced the abundance of Olsenella and Prevotella (P < 0.05) at the genus level. In short, this study proved that LZ could effectively improve the growth performance, relieve inflammation and improve the intestinal barrier function of weaned piglets. These findings provided an important theoretical basis for the application of LZ in pig production.

Association of gut microbiota composition and craniosynostosis

Background

Gut microbiota has been reported to be associated with a series of metabolic diseases including metabolic bone disease. However, study about gut microbiota and craniosynostosis (CS) is very rare. We aim to investigate the gut microbiota composition in CS patients and assess the possible relationship.

Methods

A total of 30 infants with CS and 30 infants with non-CS treated in Children's Hospital of Nanjing Medical University of Jiangsu Province from June 2021 to March 2022 were finally included in this study. All processing and analysis are carried out using 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) high-throughput gene sequencing.

Results

The CS group have significantly lower levels of family, genus, and species than non-CS group (all P<0.05). Furthermore, Staphylococcales and Lactobacillales at the order level, Enterococcaceae and Staphylococcaceae at the family level, and Enterococcus and Staphylococcus at the genus level were significantly enriched in the CS group (all P<0.05). Additionally, functional prediction showed that six metabolic pathways significantly differed between the two groups (all P<0.05). Of those, pathways involving polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon degradation (P=0.030) and penicillin and cephalosporin biosynthesis (P=0.027) were more abundant in CS group than in non-CS group.

Conclusions

Gut microbiota was statistically associated with the development of CS, and several taxa and specific functional pathways with significantly altered abundance have been identified in CS patients. These findings can provide clues for the study on the mechanism and early diagnosis of CS.

Association between plasma trans fatty acids and chronic periodontitis: Results from a nationally representative cross-sectional survey

BACKGROUND

Trans fatty acid (TFA) consumption has been reported to harbor proinflammatory characteristics and increasing oxidative stress properties, but there has been little research into its association with periodontitis. This study aimed to explore the potential association between TFAs and periodontitis.

METHODS

This large population-based study included participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2009-2010). Weighted binary and ordinal logistic regressions were used to calculate the odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) to evaluate the relationship between plasma TFAs and periodontitis.

RESULTS

A total of 1433 eligible participants, 793 (55.3%) participants with periodontitis and 640 (44.7%) without periodontitis were included. Univariate logistic regression revealed significant associations between plasma trans-11-octadecenoic acid, trans-9-octadecenoic acid, the sum of trans-octadecenoic acids, and the sum of TFAs and periodontitis (all P < 0.01). After controlling for the potential confounders, these four types of TFAs remained significantly associated with periodontitis (the ORs and 95% CIs per interquartile range increase were 1.16 (1.01-1.33), 1.20 (1.03-1.39), 1.18 (1.02-1.35), and 1.17 (1.01-1.35), respectively). Notably, these positive associations were more pronounced among overweight/obese populations. Additionally, plasma trans-9-octadecenoic acid levels were found to be associated with periodontitis severity.

CONCLUSIONS

This study suggests a significant positive association between certain plasma TFAs and chronic periodontitis, especially among overweight/obese populations. These findings provide new insights into periodontitis prevention from a dietary perspective.

Correlation of heavy metals' exposure with the prevalence of coronary heart disease among US adults: findings of the US NHANES from 2003 to 2018

We sought to explore the association between heavy metal exposure and coronary heart disease (CHD) based on data from the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES, 2003-2018). In the analyses, participants were all aged > 20 and had participated in heavy metal sub-tests with valid CHD status. The Mann-Kendall test was employed to assess the trends in heavy metals' exposure and the trends in CHD prevalence over 16 years. Spearman's rank correlation coefficient and a logistics regression (LR) model were used to estimate the association between heavy metals and CHD prevalence. 42,749 participants were included in our analyses, 1802 of whom had a CHD diagnosis. Total arsenic, dimethylarsonic acid, monomethylarsonic acid, barium, cadmium, lead, and antimony in urine, and cadmium, lead, and total mercury in blood all showed a substantial decreasing exposure level tendency over the 16 years (all Pfor trend < 0.05). CHD prevalence varied from 3.53 to 5.23% between 2003 and 2018. The correlation between 15 heavy metals and CHD ranges from - 0.238 to 0.910. There was also a significant positive correlation between total arsenic, monomethylarsonic acid, and thallium in urine and CHD by data release cycles (all P < 0.05). The cesium in urine showed a negative correlation with CHD (P < 0.05). We found that exposure trends of total arsenic, dimethylarsonic acid, monomethylarsonic acid, barium, cadmium, lead, and antimony in urine and blood decreased. CHD prevalence fluctuated, however. Moreover, total arsenic, monomethylarsonic acid, and thallium in urine all showed positive relationships with CHD, while cesium in urine showed a negative relationship with CHD.

Alcohol Consumption and Risk of Fractures: A Systematic Review and Dose-Response Meta-Analysis of Prospective Cohort Studies

Alcohol consumption remains inconsistently correlated with fracture risk, and a dose-response meta-analysis for specific outcomes is lacking. The objective of this study was to quantitatively integrate the data on the relationship between alcohol consumption and fracture risk. Pertinent articles were identified in PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase databases up to 20 February 2022. Combined RRs and 95% CIs were estimated by random- or fixed-effects models. Restricted cubic splines were used to model linear or nonlinear relationships. Forty-four articles covering 6,069,770 participants and 205,284 cases of fracture were included. The combined RRs and 95% CIs for highest compared with lowest alcohol consumption were 1.26 (1.17-1.37), 1.24 (1.13-1.35), and 1.20 (1.03-1.40) for total, osteoporotic, and hip fractures, respectively. A linear positive relationship between alcohol consumption and total fracture risk was detected (Pnonlinearity = 0.057); the risk was correlated with a 6% increase (RR, 1.06; 95% CI: 1.02, 1.10) per 14 g/d increment of alcohol consumption. J-shaped relationships of alcohol consumption with risk of osteoporotic fractures (Pnonlinearity < 0.001) and hip fractures (Pnonlinearity < 0.001) were found. Alcohol consumption of 0 to 22 g/d was linked to a reduced risk of osteoporotic fractures and hip fractures. Our findings show that any level of alcohol consumption is a risk factor for total fractures. Moreover, this dose-response meta-analysis shows that an alcohol consumption level of 0 to 22 g/d is related to a reduction in the risk of osteoporotic and hip fractures. The protocol was registered in the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (CRD42022320623).

Advances on novel iron saccharide-iron (III) complexes as nutritional supplements

Iron deficiency is prevalent worldwide, and iron supplementation is a promising strategy to address iron needs of the body. However, traditional oral supplements such as ferrous sulfate, ferrous succinate, and ferrous gluconate are absorbed in the form of ferrous ions, leading to lipid peroxidation and side effects due to other reasons. In recent years, saccharide-iron (III) complexes (SICs) as novel iron supplements have aroused attention for the high iron absorption rate and no gastrointestinal irritation at oral doses. In addition, research on the biological activities of SICs revealed that they also exhibited good abilities in treating anemia, eliminating free radicals, and regulating the immune response. This review focused on the preparation, structural characterization, and bioactivities of these new iron supplements, as promising candidates for the prevention and treatment of iron deficiency.

Sugar intake and risk of hypertension: a systematic review and dose-response meta-analysis of cohort and cross-sectional studies

Several epidemiological studies have investigated the association between sugar intake, the levels of systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) and the risk of hypertension, but findings have been inconsistent. We carried out a systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies to examine the associations between sugar intake, hypertension risk, and BP levels. Articles published up to February 2, 2021 were sourced through PubMed, EMBASE and Web of Science. Pooled relative risks (RRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated using a fixed- or random-effects model. Restricted cubic splines were used to evaluate dose-response associations. Overall, 35 studies were included in the present meta-analysis (23 for hypertension and 12 for BP). Sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) and artificially sweetened beverages (ASBs) were positively associated with hypertension risk: 1.26 (95% CI, 1.15-1.37) and 1.10 (1.07-1.13) per 250-g/day increment, respectively. For SBP, only SSBs were significant with a pooled β value of 0.24 mmHg (95% CI, 0.12-0.36) per 250 g increase. Fructose, sucrose, and added sugar, however, were shown to be associated with elevated DBP with 0.83 mmHg (0.07-1.59), 1.10 mmHg (0.12-2.08), and 5.15 mmHg (0.09-10.21), respectively. Current evidence supports the harmful effects of sugar intake for hypertension and BP level, especially SSBs, ASBs, and total sugar intake.

A minimal genome design to maximally guarantee fertile inter-subspecific hybrid rice

Hybrid rice has made considerable contributions to achieve the ambitious goal of food security for the world's population. Hybrid rice from indica/xian and japonica/geng subspecies shows much higher heterosis and is thereby an important innovation in promoting rice production in the next decade. However, such inter-subspecific hybrid rice has long suffered from serious hybrid sterility, which is a major challenge that needs to be addressed. In this study, we performed a genome design strategy to produce fertile inter-subspecific hybrid by creation of wide compatibility varieties that are able to overcome hybrid sterility. Based on combined genetic analyses in two indica-japonica crosses, we determined that four hybrid sterility loci, S5, f5, pf12 and Sc, are the major QTLs controlling inter-subspecific hybrid sterility and thus the minimal targets that can be manipulated for breeding sub-specific hybrid rice. We then cloned the pf12 locus, one of the most effective loci for hybrid male sterility, by map-based cloning, and showed that artificial disruption of pf12A gene at this locus could successfully rescue hybrid fertility. We further dissected the genetic basis of wide compatibility using three pairwise crosses from a wide-compatibility variety Dular and representative indica and japonica varieties. On this basis, we constructed and assembled different combinations of naturally compatible alleles of four loci, S5, Sc, pf12, and f5, and found that the improved lines could fully recover pollen and embryo sac fertility in test-crossed F₁s, thereby completely fulfilling the demands of inter-subspecific hybrid spikelet fertility in agricultural production. This breeding scheme would facilitate redesign of future inter-subspecific hybrid rice with a higher yield potential.

Dose-response meta-analysis of ultra-processed food with the risk of cardiovascular events and all-cause mortality: evidence from prospective cohort studies

Background: Previous meta-analyses included abundant cross-sectional studies, and/or only assessed high versus low categories of UPF consumption. We conducted this meta-analysis based on prospective cohort studies to estimate the dose-response associations of UPF consumption with the risk of cardiovascular events (CVEs) and all-cause mortality among general adults. Methods: PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science were searched for relevant articles published up to August 17, 2021, and newly published articles between August 17, 2021 and July 21, 2022 were re-searched. Random-effects models were used to estimate the summary relative risks (RRs) and confidence intervals (CIs). Generalized least squares regression was used to estimate the linear dose-response associations of each additional serving of UPF. Restricted cubic splines were used to model the possible nonlinear trends. Results: Eleven eligible papers (17 analyses) were finally identified. The pooled effect size for the highest versus lowest category of UPF consumption showed positive associations with the risk of CVEs (RR = 1.35, 95% CI, 1.18-1.54) and all-cause mortality (RR = 1.21, 95% CI, 1.15-1.27). For each additional daily serving of UPF, the risk increased by 4% (RR = 1.04, 95% CI, 1.02-1.06) for CVEs and 2% (RR = 1.02, 95% CI, 1.01-1.03) for all-cause mortality. With increasing UPF intake, the risk of CVEs reflected a linear upward trend (P_nonlinearity = 0.095), while all-cause mortality reflected a nonlinear upward trend (P_nonlinearity = 0.039). Conclusion: Our findings based on prospective cohorts suggested that any increased level of UPF consumption was linked to higher CVEs and mortality risk. Thus, the recommendation is to control the intake of UPF in daily diet.

On the nano-treating effect of Al2O3 on the eutectic Si in Al-Si alloy

An Al-15 Al₂O₃ alloy was added into Al-12Si melt to investigate the nano-treating effect of Al₂O₃ nanoparticles on eutectic Si crystals. It was found that Al₂O₃ clusters may be partly swallowed by eutectic Si or distribute surrounding them. As a result, the flake-like eutectic Si in Al-12Si alloy can transform to granular or worm-like morphologies, attributing to the influence of Al₂O₃ nanoparticles on the growth behavior of eutectic Si crystals. The orientation relationship between Si and Al₂O₃ was identified, and the possible modifying mechanisms were discussed.

[Biological function and clinical significance of long non-coding RNA LINC00342 in head and neck squamous carcinoma]

Objective: To investigate the relationship between the long-non-coding RNA LINC00342 expression and the clinicopathological parameters of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) and the biological function of LINC00342 in HNSCC cells. Methods: The expression level of LINC00342 in the HNSCC was analyzed using transcriptome sequencing data from TCGA (The Cancer Genome Atlas) database, and the expressions of LINC00342 in laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma tissues (LSCC) of 27 patients in the First Hospital of Shanxi Medical University were detected by transcriptome sequencing. The expression levels of LINC00342 in human embryonic lung diploid cells 2BS, HNSCC cell lines FD-LSC-1, CAL-27 and Detroit562 were determined by real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR). RNAi (RNA interference) was used for LINC00342 knockdown in HNSCC cell lines, and the changes of malignant phenotype in the tumor cells after LINC00342 knockdown were examined by cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8), colony formation, flow cytometry, transwell invasion and migration assays. Bioinformatics analysis was performed to construct a LINC00342-centered competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) regulatory network, and GO (Gene Ontology) enrichment analysis was performed. Statistical analysis and graphing were performed using SPSS 25.0 software and GraphPad Prism 6 software. Results: Mean LINC00342 levels in HNSCC tissues and TCGA database were higher than that in normal control tissues, but with no significantly statistical difference (P=0.522). LINC00342 expression levels were positively correlated with cervical lymph node metastasis and pathological grade in patients with HNSCC, with higher expression in male patients than in female patients (P<0.05). Transcriptome sequencing analysis showed that mean expression level of LINC00342 in LSCC tissues of 27 patients was significantly higher than that in the paired adjacent normal mucosa tissues (t=1.56, P=0.036). LINC00342 expression was significantly upregulated in HNSCC cell lines FD-LSC-1, CAL-27 and Detroit562 (t-values of -12.17, -23.26 and -388.57, respectively; all P<0.001). Knockdown of LINC00342 by transfecting si-LINC00342-1 and si-LINC00342-2 inhibited HNSCC cell proliferation (t-values of 8.95 and 4.84, 2.70 and 5.55, 2.02 and 3.70, respectively), colony formation (t-values of 6.66 and 6.17, 7.38 and 11.65, 4.90 and 5.79, respectively), migration (t-values of 8.21 and 7.19, 5.76 and 6.46, 6.28 and 9.92, respectively) and invasion abilities (t-values of 9.29 and 10.25, 11.30 and 11.36, 8.02 and 8.66, respectively), but promoting apoptosis in cell lines FD-LSC-1 and CAL-27 (t-values of -2.21 and -5.83, -3.05 and -5.25 respectively) (all P-values<0.05). The LINC00342-centered ceRNA network consists of 10 downregulated microRNA and 647 upregulated mRNA nodes. GO analysis results indicated that LINC00342-regulated mRNAs were enriched in 22 biological processes, 32 molecular functions, and 12 cellular components. Conclusion: High level of LINC00342 is associated with the malignant progression of HNSCC. LINC00342 promotes the proliferation, migration, invasion, and antagonizes apoptosis of HNSCC cells, which serves as a potential molecular marker in HNSCC.

Association of triglyceride-glucose index and its 6-year change with risk of hypertension: A prospective cohort study

BACKGROUND AND AIM

We aimed to investigate the association of triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index and its dynamic change with risk of hypertension in rural Chinese and, further, to explore whether the TyG index mediates the obesity-related hypertension.

METHODS AND RESULTS

A prospective cohort study, including 10,309 subjects without hypertension at baseline, was conducted in 2007-2008 and followed up in 2013-2014. TyG index was calculated as Ln[fasting triglycerides (mg/dL) × fasting glucose (mg/dL)/2]. Logistic regression model was used to estimate the odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Mediation analysis was performed to examine the contribution of the TyG index to the association of obesity-hypertension incidence. During a median follow-up of 6 years, 2073 subjects developed hypertension. In multivariate logistic model adjusted for age, sex, alcohol drinking, smoking, physical activity and education, monthly income, family history of hypertension, TC, and HDL-C, the risk of hypertension was 1.14 (1.07-1.22) for per-SD increase in TyG. After additional controlling for obesity, this association was nonsignificant (1.06, 0.99-1.13) and (1.05, 0.99-1.13) for BMI and WC, respectively. Increasing trends were found for hypertension incidence as the TyG change increased, with or without adjustment for obesity (all P_trend < 0.05). With per-SD increment in TyG change, the risks of hypertension incidence were 1.14 (1.07-1.22) for absolute TyG change, and 1.15 (1.08-1.22) for relative TyG change in multivariate logistic model; the results were significant after further adjustment for BMI or WC, respectively. The TyG index partially mediated the obesity-incident hypertension association: 6.84% for BMI and 6.68% for WC, respectively.

CONCLUSIONS

Elevated TyG index and its dynamic change were positively associated with risk of incident hypertension in rural Chinese population, and the TyG index may play a partially mediating role in obesity-related incident hypertension.

Independent and interactive effect of sedentary time and physical activity on risk of all-cause mortality: A prospective cohort study

OBJECTIVES

Sedentary behavior (SB) and physical inactivity have been associated with an increased risk of all-cause mortality. Evidence in China is scarce, and it is unclear whether physical activity (PA) attenuates or even eliminates the harmful effects of prolonged SB in the Chinese population.

METHODS

We conducted a prospective cohort study of 17 084 Chinese adults. PA and sitting time (ST) were assessed using the IPAQ. Cox proportional hazards models were used to estimate the risk of PA and ST with all-cause mortality. Interaction plots were used to visualize the interaction effects.

RESULTS

During a median follow-up of 6.01 years, a total of 1106 deaths occurred. PA level was inversely associated with the incidence of all-cause mortality, while ST showed a detrimental association (all p_trend  < 0.05). In the stratified analysis, ST was associated with all-cause mortality in the low PA, while the association was attenuated in the moderate PA group: the HRs (95% CI) comparing ST of 4-8, 8-11, and ≥11 to <4 h/day were 1.15 (0.73-1.81), 1.55 (0.92-2.59), and 2.70 (1.52-4.80), respectively. In the high PA group, no significant association was found across all ST levels. In the joint analysis, compared with the high PA and ST <4 h/day, the harmful effect was found only in the combined low PA and moderate PA groups with ST ≥11 h/day (HR:2.71, 95% CI:1.69-4.35). In addition, a significant interaction association was found.

CONCLUSION

Our study, based on a prospective cohort, suggests that the detrimental effect of ST on all-cause mortality is attenuated or eliminated by high PA levels in the Chinese population.

Elevated remnant cholesterol increase 6-year type 2 diabetes mellitus onset risk

AIM

To investigate the association of remnant cholesterol (RC) with future type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) risk, and to assess the underlying impact of some recognized risk factors on it.

METHODS

A total of 11468 nondiabetic adults in rural China were recruited in 2007-2008 and followed up in 2013-2014. Logistic regression was used to assess the risk of incident T2DM by quartiles of baseline RC, estimating odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Association of the combinations of RC and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) with T2DM risk were further evaluated.

RESULTS

Multivariable adjusted OR (95% CI) for incident T2DM associated with quartile 4 versus quartile 1 of RC was 2.72 (2.05-3.62). Per 1-standard deviation (SD) increases in RC levels was associated with a 34% higher T2DM risk. However, gender modified the specific association (P_interaction < 0.05), with the association stronger among females. When combining the low LDL-C and low RC groups as reference, individuals with RC levels ≥ 0.56 mmol/L had more than a 2-fold T2DM risk, regardless of LDL-C level.

CONCLUSIONS

Elevated RC levels increase T2DM risk in rural Chinese populations. In those who cannot control their risk by lowering LDL-C levels, the goal of lipid-lowering therapy can be shifted to RC.

Neutron-Absorption Properties of B/Cu Composites

Copper has high electrical and thermal conductivity, which is frequently employed in structural and functional materials. In this research, powder metallurgy was used to incorporate boron nanosheets into metal matrix composites to create boron dispersion-enhanced copper matrix composites. The neutron-absorption characteristics of composite materials were investigated, as well as the link between neutron-absorption cross-section and neutron energy. The results told us that the morphology of the second phase on the particle surface is closely related to the size of Cu-B particles, copper and boron correspond atomically to each other on the interface without dislocation or lattice distortion, forming a completely coherent interface, and that the neutron absorption cross-section decreases exponentially as neutron energy increases. In low-energy neutrons with energies less than 0.1 eV, the increase of boron content and ¹⁰B abundance in Cu-B alloy will enhance the neutron-absorption capacity of the alloy. Boron dispersion-strengthened copper matrix composites have good neutron-absorption capacity, and the microstructure and size of boron do not affect the neutron-absorption performance of composites with the same content of boron. The hardness of the B-dispersion-strengthened Cu matrix composite obtained by nanoindentation test is about 3.04 GPa. Copper matrix composites with boron dispersion reinforcement exhibit high hardness and neutron-absorption characteristics.

Rapid and massive fractionation of hemicelluloses for purifying cellulose at room temperature by tetramethylammonium hydroxide

The fractionation of hemicelluloses is a promising method to improve the comprehensive utilization of lignocellulosic biomass. However, the effective fractionation of hemicelluloses is always limited by the structural complexity and easy degradability. In this study, tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH) was developed to fractionate hemicelluloses from poplar holocellulose with high molecular weights and high yields at room temperature. Approximately 90% of hemicelluloses could be dissolved at room temperature in 1 h, and the yield was up to 81.9%. Compared with the fractionation using NaOH solution, the hemicelluloses isolated by TMAH solvent showed a more complete structure and higher purity. Meanwhile, the retention rate of cellulose after treatment with TMAH was up to 90.2%, and the crystal structure of cellulose in the residues was practically unchanged. Moreover, the TMAH solvent could be recycled to fractionate hemicelluloses. The work provides an elegant and significantly efficient method towards hemicelluloses fractionation and cellulose purification.
