Abstract
Hearing loss is a common side effect of many tumor treatments. However, hearing loss can also occur as a direct result of certain tumors of the nervous system, the most common of which are the vestibular schwannomas (VS). These tumors arise from Schwann cells of the vestibulocochlear nerve and their main cause is the loss of function of NF2, with 95 % of cases being sporadic and 5 % being part of the rare neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2)-related Schwannomatosis. Genetic variations in NF2 do not fully explain the clinical heterogeneity of VS, and interactions between Schwann cells and their microenvironment appear to be critical for tumor development. Preclinical in vitro and in vivo models of VS are needed to develop prognostic biomarkers and targeted therapies. In addition to VS, other tumors can affect hearing. Meningiomas and other masses in the cerebellopontine angle can compress the vestibulocochlear nerve due to their anatomic proximity. Gliomas can disrupt several neurological functions, including hearing; in fact, glioblastoma multiforme, the most aggressive subtype, may exhibit early symptoms of auditory alterations. Besides, treatments for high-grade tumors, including chemotherapy or radiotherapy, as well as incomplete resections, can induce long-term auditory dysfunction. Because hearing loss can have an irreversible and dramatic impact on quality of life, it should be considered in the clinical management plan of patients with tumors, and monitored throughout the course of the disease.

Abstract
PURPOSE The number of cochlear implant (CI) surgeries is growing over time, with the risk of overloading CI centers in the post-surgical management. Telemedicine is a possible solution to address this phenomenon. Remote Check (RC) is an application that is specific for CI recipients monitoring. The aim of this study is to evaluate the feasibility of application, potential economic impact and patients' acceptance of RC. METHODS The study is retrospective investigation, data on clinical, audiological features (from remote and on-site evaluation), and satisfaction surveys of 66 consecutive patients were collected; costs required for RC and for on-site evaluations were recorded as well. RESULTS One hundred and ninety RC sessions were completed by the patients (2.88 sessions per patient). RC and on-site audiometry significantly correlated except for the 500 Hz frequency. Estimated costs for the Italian National Health System for RC review and on-site evaluations were 1.32€ and 3.49€ per minute, respectively. High satisfaction for RC was reached in 91 % of patients. CONCLUSION RC revealed to be a reliable, cost-effective and well accepted tool in CI monitoring. This study preliminarily supports the hypothesis that RC could be a valid instrument to reduce CI management overload in the outpatient clinic.

Abstract
Convergence of neural implants with artificial intelligence (AI) presents opportunities for the development of novel neural implants and improvement of existing neurotechnologies. While such technological innovation carries great promise for the restoration of neurological functions, they also raise ethical challenges. Developers of AI-driven neural implants possess valuable knowledge on the possibilities, limitations and challenges raised by these innovations; yet their perspectives are underrepresented in academic literature. This study aims to explore perspectives of developers of neurotechnology to outline ethical implications of three AI-driven neural implants: a cochlear implant, a visual neural implant, and a motor intention decoding speech-brain-computer-interface. We conducted semi-structured focus groups with developers (n = 19) of AI-driven neural implants. Respondents shared ethically relevant considerations about AI-driven neural implants that we clustered into three themes: (1) design aspects; (2) challenges in clinical trials; (3) impact on users and society. Developers considered accuracy and reliability of AI-driven neural implants conditional for users' safety, authenticity, and mental privacy. These needs were magnified by the convergence with AI. Yet, the need for accuracy and reliability may also conflict with potential benefits of AI in terms of efficiency and complex data interpretation. We discuss strategies to mitigate these challenges.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Maternally inherited non-syndromic hearing loss is linked with mitochondrial DNA mutations. AIM This investigation demonstrates the features of a Chinese pedigree suffering from maternally inherited non-syndromic hearing loss. METHODS Biochemical characterizations included the measurements ofprotein synthesis levels, membrane potential, and the synthesis of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and adenosine triphosphate (ATP) using cybrid cell lines derived from an affected matrilineal subject and control subject. RESULTS Non-congenital early or late-onset/development hearing impairment has been observed in 4 of 9 in a family (matrilineal), with different degrees of hearing impairment, ranging from normal to severe. A pedigree's whole mitochondrial genome sequence analysis revealed the homoplasmic m.14502 T > C (I58V) mutation at ND6's isoleucine location-58, and specific mitocchondrial DNA polymorphisms set haplogroups M10 were highly conserved. In vitro models indicated that m.14502 T > C mutation-derived respiratory deficiency decreases ND6 protein synthesis, mitochondrial membrane potential, and ATP synthesis. These mitochondrial dysregulations enhance the generation of ROS in the mutant cells. Identifying nuclear modifiers is essential for elucidating hearing loss's pathogenesis and furnishing novel therapeutic interventions. CONCLUSIONS The m.14502 T > C mutation should be considered an inherited risk factor that can help diagnose. The data of this investigation help counsel families of individuals with hearing loss.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Sensorineural hearing-loss (SHL) is accompanied by changes in the entire ear-brain pathway and its connected regions. While hearing-aid (HA) partially compensates for SHL, speech perception abilities often continue to remain poor, resulting in consequences in everyday activities. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) promotes cortical network plasticity and may enhance language comprehension in SHL patients. METHODS 27 patients using HA and with SHL were randomly assigned to a treatment protocol consisting of five consecutive days of either real (Active group: 13 patients) or placebo rTMS (Sham group: 14 patients). The stimulation parameters were as follows: 2-second trains at 10 Hz, 4-second inter-train-interval, and 1800 pulses. Neuronavigated rTMS was applied over the left superior temporal sulcus. Audiological tests were administered before (T0), immediately after (T1), and one week following treatment completion (T2) to evaluate the speech reception threshold (SRT) and the Pure Tone Average (PTA). RESULTS In the context of a general improvement likely due to learning, the treatment with real rTMS induced significant reduction of the SRT and PTA at T1 and T2 versus placebo. CONCLUSIONS The long-lasting effects on SRT and PTA observed in the Active group indicates that rTMS administered over the auditory cortex could promote sustained neuromodulatory-induced changes in the brain, improving the perception of complex sentences and pure tones reception skills. SIGNIFICANCE Five days of rTMS treatment enhances overall speech intelligibility and PTA in SHL patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Additional needs refer to specific requirements or support for individuals with disabilities or syndromes. Intellectual ability is a crucial outcome determinant of a cochlear implant. The social quotient (SQ) is an indirect predictor of intellectual capacity and social skills. This study aimed to investigate the clinical significance of the SQ on children with additional needs who received cochlear implants. Subjects and. METHODS This study included 24 patients with diagnosed developmental delays and syndromes, who demonstrated SQ scores of <70. Preoperative social skills were evaluated using the SQ. All patients underwent cochlear implantation (CI) surgery before 7 years of age. Outcomes were evaluated using the Infant-Toddler Meaningful Auditory Integration Scale (IT-MAIS) and Categories of Auditory Performance (CAP) scores. Data were collected through a retrospective chart review. RESULTS Children were categorized into three groups based on their SQ. There were no correlations between the preoperative SQ and IT-MAIS or CAP scores at 2 and 5 years of follow-up postoperatively. The CI outcomes of children with low SQ (<70) differed from those with normal development (SQ>70). In the low-SQ group, inner ear anomalies were observed in 10 (41.7%) patients. Although not statistically significant, these children exhibited a trend of lower average outcomes than children without inner ear anomalies. CONCLUSIONS CI outcomes in children with additional needs positively affected auditory performance. Postoperative auditory and language skills tended to improve slowly in children with additional needs and a lower SQ. Over time, development gradually became more comparable to the other groups of children. However, this improvement was less than that observed in children without additional needs. Our findings support CI for children with additional needs as part of long-term auditory rehabilitation following surgery.

Abstract
Employing functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) techniques, we conducted a comprehensive analysis of neural responses during sign language, picture, and word processing tasks in a cohort of 35 deaf participants and contrasted these responses with those of 35 hearing counterparts. Our voxel-based analysis unveiled distinct patterns of brain activation during language processing tasks. Deaf individuals exhibited robust bilateral activation in the superior temporal regions during sign language processing, signifying the profound neural adaptations associated with sign comprehension. Similarly, during picture processing, the deaf cohort displayed activation in the right angular, right calcarine, right middle temporal, and left angular gyrus regions, elucidating the neural dynamics engaged in visual processing tasks. Intriguingly, during word processing, the deaf group engaged the right insula and right fusiform gyrus, suggesting compensatory mechanisms at play during linguistic tasks. Notably, the control group failed to manifest additional or distinctive regions in any of the tasks when compared to the deaf cohort, underscoring the unique neural signatures within the deaf population. Multivariate Pattern Analysis (MVPA) of functional connectivity provided a more nuanced perspective on connectivity patterns across tasks. Deaf participants exhibited significant activation in a myriad of brain regions, including bilateral planum temporale (PT), postcentral gyrus, insula, and inferior frontal regions, among others. These findings underscore the intricate neural adaptations in response to auditory deprivation. Seed-based connectivity analysis, utilizing the PT as a seed region, revealed unique connectivity pattern across tasks. These connectivity dynamics provide valuable insights into the neural interplay associated with cross-modal plasticity.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to investigate the effects of an adhesive bone conduction device (aBCD) in children with congenital single-sided deafness (SSD). Specifically, we examined whether the aBCD elicits improvement in the speech perception ability of children with congenital SSD and whether using this device would adversely affect the horizontal localisation abilities of these children. METHODS Thirteen school-aged children with SSD and seven children with Normal Hearing (NH) were included in this study. Speech perception in noise was measured using the Mandarin Speech Test Materials and sound localisation performance was evaluated using broadband noise stimuli (0.5-20 kHz), randomly played from seven loudspeakers at different stimulus levels (65-, 70-, and 75-dB SPL). RESULTS All children with SSD showed inferior speech perception and sound localisation performance compared with children with NH. The aBCD use remarkably improved the speech perception abilities of these children under quiet and noise conditions; however, their sound localisation abilities neither improved nor deteriorated. CONCLUSION This study reveals the effectiveness and safety of a non-surgical aBCD in paediatric patients with SSD. Our results provide a theoretical basis for early hearing intervention with an aBCD in children with congenital SSD who are temporarily unable to undergo ear surgery. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE Level 3.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the effect of electrical auditory brainstem response (EABR) on the integrity evaluation of auditory pathway and the prediction of postoperative effect of cochlear implantation in patients with different etiology of hearing loss. METHODS A total of 580 patients with neuropathic deafness who underwent cochlear implantation surgery from August 2011 to December 2020 were selected for EABR test. The preoperative EABR waveform was analyzed, and parameters such as V wave amplitude, threshold, latency and interval of each wave, and slope of V wave I/O curve were measured. Neural response telemetry (NRT) test was performed during MAP 1 month after operation, and C and T values of the machine were recorded. RESULTS The total EABR extraction rate was 98.45% among 580 patients, including 100% for the normal structure group and enlarged vestibular aqueduct group (LVAS), 92.44% for other malformed group. The average threshold of V wave in patients with normal cochlear structure was significantly better than the malformation groups (p < 0.05). The total extraction rate of NRT was 78.62%, including 99.72% in the group with normal structure, 95.65% in the LVAS group, 1.85-88.24% in the group with other malformations, and 0% in the cochlear ossification group. The correlation analysis showed a statistically significant correlation between the average preoperative EABR threshold and the C value of NRT. CONCLUSIONS Preoperative EABR could evaluate the integrity of auditory conduction pathway of patients with cochlear implantation and predict the postoperative hearing rehabilitation effect.

Abstract
PURPOSE This article presents a review of the main causes of inherited dual sensory impairment (DSI) with an emphasis on the multidisciplinary approach. METHODS A narrative review of English literature published before January 2023 was conducted using PubMed, Medline, and Scopus databases. The different causes of inherited DSI are discussed from a multidisciplinary perspective. RESULTS There are a wide range of dual sensory impairment (DSI), commonly referred to as blindness and deafness. While Usher syndrome is the most frequent genetic cause, other genetic syndromes such as Alport syndrome or Stickler syndrome can also lead to DSI. Various retinal phenotypes, including pigmentary retinopathy as seen in Usher syndrome, vitreoretinopathy as in Stickler syndrome, and macular dystrophy as in Alport syndrome, along with type of hearing loss (sensorineural or conductive) and additional systemic symptoms can aid in diagnostic suspicion. A thorough ophthalmologic and otorhinolaryngologic examination can help guide diagnosis, which can then be confirmed with genetic studies, crucial for determining prognosis. Effective hearing rehabilitation measures, such as hearing implants, and visual rehabilitation measures, such as low vision optical devices, are crucial for maintaining social interaction and proper development in these patients. CONCLUSIONS While Usher syndrome is the primary cause of inherited dual sensory impairment (DSI), other genetic syndromes can also lead to this condition. A proper diagnostic approach based on retinal phenotypes and types of hearing loss can aid in ruling out alternative causes. Multidisciplinary approaches can assist in reaching a definitive diagnosis, which has significant prognostic implications.

Abstract
PURPOSE Programming a cochlear implant (fitting) is an essential part of a user's post-implantation journey, defining how sound will be translated into electrical stimulation and aiming to provide optimal speech perception outcomes. Currently, there are no established, evidence-based guidelines for fitting cochlear implant users, leading to a high degree of variability in fitting practices, users' parameters, and probably outcomes. In this study a data-driven approach is used to retrospectively investigate the relation between cochlear implant fitting parameters and speech perception outcomes in post-lingually deafened adults. METHODS 298 data points corresponding to fitting parameters and speech audiometry test results for the same number of adult, post-lingually deafened, experienced CI users were analyzed. Correlation analysis was performed, after which parameters from the top-scoring and bottom-scoring tertiles were compared via the Mann-Whitney-Wilcoxon u test. RESULTS Weak correlations between dynamic range and speech audiometry outcomes were identified, having p values lower than (albeit close to) 0.05. A significant (p < 0.05) difference in electrical dynamic range (the difference between the minimum and maximum amount of current which may be delivered by each electrode) was found, with top-scoring subjects having on average a wider dynamic range. CONCLUSION The association between dynamic range and speech perception outcomes shown in this retrospective study highlights the need for deeper investigation into evidence-driven fitting. It might be a first step in the direction of evidence-based fitting, minimizing variability in outcomes for cochlear implant users and helping mitigate the issue of unexplained low performance.

Abstract
Sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) is the most common type of hearing loss. Causes include degenerative changes in the sensory hair cells, their synapses and/or the cochlear nerve. As human inner ear hair cells have no capacity for regeneration, their destruction is irreversible and leads to permanent hearing loss. SNHL can be genetically inherited or acquired through ageing, exposure to noise or ototoxic drugs. Ototoxicity generally refers to damage to the structures and functions of the inner ear following exposure to specific drugs. Ototoxicity can be multifactorial, causing damage to cochlear hair cells or cells with homeostatic functions that modulate cochlear hair cell function. Clinical strategies to limit ototoxicity include identifying patients at risk, monitoring drug concentrations, performing serial hearing assessments and switching to less ototoxic therapy. This review was conducted in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines, using the PubMed® database. The search terms "ototoxicity", "hearing loss" and "drugs" were combined. We included studies published between September 2013 and June 2023, and focused on medicines and drugs used in hospitals. The review highlighted a number of articles reporting the main drug classes potentially involved: namely, immunosuppressants, antimalarials, vaccines, antibiotics, antineoplastic agents, diuretics, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and analgesics. The presumed ototoxic mechanisms were described, together with the therapeutic and preventive options developed over the last ten years.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the association between neuroimaging and outcome in infants with congenital cytomegalovirus (cCMV), focusing on qualitative MRI and quantitative diffusion-weighted imaging of white matter abnormalities (WMAs). METHODS Multicentre retrospective cohort study of 160 infants with cCMV (103 symptomatic). A four-grade neuroimaging scoring system was applied to cranial ultrasonography and MRI acquired at ≤3 months. WMAs were categorised as multifocal or diffuse. Temporal-pole WMAs (TPWMAs) consisted of swollen or cystic appearance. Apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values were obtained from frontal, parieto-occipital and temporal white matter regions. Available follow-up MRI at ≥6 months (N=14) was additionally reviewed. Neurodevelopmental assessment included motor function, cognition, behaviour, hearing, vision and epilepsy. Adverse outcome was defined as death or moderate/severe disability. RESULTS Neuroimaging scoring was associated with outcome (p<0.001, area under the curve 0.89±0.03). Isolated WMAs (IWMAs) were present in 61 infants, and WMAs associated with other lesions in 30. Although TPWMAs and diffuse pattern often coexisted in infants with IWMAs (p<0.001), only TPWMAs were associated with adverse outcomes (OR 7.8; 95% CI 1.4 to 42.8), including severe hearing loss in 20% and hearing loss combined with other moderate/severe disabilities in 15%. Increased ADC values were associated with higher neuroimaging scores, WMAs based on visual assessment and IWMAs with TPWMAs. ADC values were not associated with outcome in infants with IWMAs. Findings suggestive of progression of WMAs on follow-up MRI included gliosis and malacia. CONCLUSIONS Categorisation of neuroimaging severity correlates with outcome in cCMV. In infants with IWMAs, TPWMAs provide a guide to prognosis.

Abstract
Dominant optic atrophy (DOA) is one of the most prevalent forms of hereditary optic neuropathies and is mainly caused by heterozygous variants in OPA1, encoding a mitochondrial dynamin-related large GTPase. The clinical spectrum of DOA has been extended to a wide variety of syndromic presentations, called DOAplus, including deafness as the main secondary symptom associated to vision impairment. To date, the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying the deafness in DOA remain unknown. To gain insights into the process leading to hearing impairment, we have analyzed the Opa1delTTAG mouse model that recapitulates the DOAplus syndrome through complementary approaches combining morpho-physiology, biochemistry, and cellular and molecular biology. We found that Opa1delTTAG mutation leads an adult-onset progressive auditory neuropathy in mice, as attested by the auditory brainstem response threshold shift over time. However, the mutant mice harbored larger otoacoustic emissions in comparison to wild-type littermates, whereas the endocochlear potential, which is a proxy for the functional state of the stria vascularis, was comparable between both genotypes. Ultrastructural examination of the mutant mice revealed a selective loss of sensory inner hair cells, together with a progressive degeneration of the axons and myelin sheaths of the afferent terminals of the spiral ganglion neurons, supporting an auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder (ANSD). Molecular assessment of cochlea demonstrated a reduction of Opa1 mRNA level by greater than 40%, supporting haploinsufficiency as the disease mechanism. In addition, we evidenced an early increase in Sirtuin 3 level and in Beclin1 activity, and subsequently an age-related mtDNA depletion, increased oxidative stress, mitophagy as well as an impaired autophagic flux. Together, these results support a novel role for OPA1 in the maintenance of inner hair cells and auditory neural structures, addressing new challenges for the exploration and treatment of OPA1-linked ANSD in patients.

Abstract
Deafness, as a profound manifestation of sensory deprivation, prompts a cascade of intricate cerebral adaptations. In this study, involving 35 deaf individuals and 35 hearing controls, we utilized resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) to delve into the depths of functional connectivity nuances distinguishing deaf individuals from their hearing counterparts. Leading our analytical approach was the application of multi-voxel pattern analysis (fc-MVPA). This advanced method provided a refined perspective, revealing amplified neural connectivity within the deaf population. Notably, regions such as the left postcentral somatosensory association cortex, the anterior and posterior corridors of the left superior temporal gyrus (STG), and the left mid-temporal lobe were identified as hotspots of heightened connectivity. Further, fc-MVPA shed light on intricate interaction effects, which became more pronounced when examining variables such as the duration of auditory deprivation and the extent of sign language exposure. These interactions were particularly evident in the premotor and left frontal mid-orbital regions. Complementing this, seed-based connectivity assessments illuminated pronounced coupling dynamics within the left STG spectrum. Concurrently, local correlation (LCOR) value analysis in the deaf group revealed significant shifts in the right superior STG and bilateral precuneus. In addition, amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF) evaluations indicated modulations in the bilateral mid cingulum and left superior mid frontal gyrus. This comprehensive, fc-MVPA-driven exploration uncovers the multifaceted functional adaptations resulting from deafness, highlighting the profound plasticity of the human brain and its potential implications for targeted rehabilitative strategies.

Abstract
SARS COV 2 infection affects primarily the respiratory system and various organs in humans is responsible for higher mortality secondary to cytokine storm during the COVID-19 pandemic. It affects the internal auditory system is responsible for Sensory neural hearing loss in adults as well as children born to COVID-19 infected mothers. This study was aimed to detect the pattern of hearing loss in COVID-19 infected adults and pattern of hearing loss in children born to gestational COVID-19 infected mothers. Fifty asymptomatic RT-PCR COVID-19 infected adults and age, sex matched healthy controls were evaluated for audiological profile using Pure Tone Audiometry (PTA). Children born to COVID-19 infected mothers were tested using Transient product otoacoustic emissions and click-evoked auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) compared with children born to non-COVID mothers. PTA auditory profile of COVID-19 infected adults on day 7 had 30% (16 out of 50) significant high frequency sensory neural hearing impairment for 4000 Hz (p value 0.003), 6000 Hz (p value 0.001), 8000 Hz (p value 0.001). Repeat PTA testing on day 30 showed normal hearing. Whereas in children, 40% (n = 20) born to COVID-19 infected mothers had OAE as "Refer". BERA (ABRs) testing of that OAE "Refer" children revealed 30% (n = 6) hearing impairment. COVID-19 infection cause transient type of high frequency sensory neural hearing loss in adults. Whereas in children born to COVID-19 infected mothers there is risk of developing permanent, progressive or long-standing transient type of sensory neural hearing loss.

Abstract
In the field of audiology, achieving accurate discrimination of auditory impairments remains a formidable challenge. Conditions such as deafness and tinnitus exert a substantial impact on patients' overall quality of life, emphasizing the urgent need for precise and efficient classification methods. This study introduces an innovative approach, utilizing Multi-View Brain Network data acquired from three distinct cohorts: 51 deaf patients, 54 with tinnitus, and 42 normal controls. Electroencephalogram (EEG) recording data were meticulously collected, focusing on 70 electrodes attached to an end-to-end key with 10 regions of interest (ROI). This data is synergistically integrated with machine learning algorithms. To tackle the inherently high-dimensional nature of brain connectivity data, principal component analysis (PCA) is employed for feature reduction, enhancing interpretability. The proposed approach undergoes evaluation using ensemble learning techniques, including Random Forest, Extra Trees, Gradient Boosting, and CatBoost. The performance of the proposed models is scrutinized across a comprehensive set of metrics, encompassing cross-validation accuracy (CVA), precision, recall, F1-score, Kappa, and Matthews correlation coefficient (MCC). The proposed models demonstrate statistical significance and effectively diagnose auditory disorders, contributing to early detection and personalized treatment, thereby enhancing patient outcomes and quality of life. Notably, they exhibit reliability and robustness, characterized by high Kappa and MCC values. This research represents a significant advancement in the intersection of audiology, neuroimaging, and machine learning, with transformative implications for clinical practice and care.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE to assess clinical safety and postoperative audiological outcomes in postlingual deafness Spanish speaking patients, who underwent surgery with Nurotron™ cochlear implant. MATERIAL AND METHODS Retrospective descriptive case series study. We performed follow-up of complications and audiological measurements before and after cochlear implantation. Patients with bilateral severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss or patients with unilateral deafness with/without tinnitus were included. Repeated-measures within-subjects for assess pure tone thresholds and speech performance (bilingual test) with a detailed monitoring to establish security or adverse effects were performed. Analysis of variance tests, repetitive measures, were used for statistical analysis. RESULTS 31 patients were included, 17 (54.8%) men and 14 (45.2%) women. Mean age at the time of surgery was 49.82 ± 18.8 years. The mean follow-up of the group was 31.56 ± 9.57 months (minimum = 19.6 months and maximum = 52.50 months). As major complication one patient (3.23%) had a hard failure that required removal and re-implantation. 25.8% of the patients presented minor complications, the most frequent being vertigo/unsteadiness in 22.6%. The mean of language discrimination (free field at 65 dB SPL) was 62.19% ± 16.66; being 69.82% ± 7.35 in the group of severe to profound bilateral sensorineural hearing loss. A statistically significant reduction was observed in patients with tinnitus, assessed using the visual analogue scale, preoperative = 7.2 ± 1,6 vs postoperative (18months postoperative) = 1.7 ± 1.3 (p < .001). CONCLUSIONS The Nurotron™ cochlear implant shows satisfactory audiological results, in accordance with what has been reported in the literature. Minor complications were similar to previous studies, but the percentage of hard failure should continue to be observed, which was higher than other reports with comparable follow-up.

Abstract
Cogan's syndrome is a rare autoimmune inflammatory disease, characterized by interstitial keratitis and audio-vestibular signs. The syndrome was first described in 1945 by David G. Cogan. Then, it was only in 1980 when Haynes et al. proposed diagnostic criteria for patients with other symptoms and was qualified as atypical form of Cogan's syndrome. Herein, we report a case of a 28-year-old woman with atypical Cogan's syndrome. The patient was treated with corticosteroids and received a cochlear implant.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Acute mastoiditis (AM) is the most common complication of acute otitis media and primarily affects children under the age of two; current data on its prevalence in paediatric patients with cochlear implant (CI) are still scant. Proper management of AM in CI children is crucial in order to avoid the implications (financial and emotional) of an explant. Aim of this paper is to describe the cases of AM occurred among young patients with CI in follow up at our department, also in order to evaluate its prevalence, potential predisposing factors, clinical course and therapeutic strategies. PATIENTS AND METHODS Retrospective study. Medical records of all paediatric patients with CI, who had at least one year of follow-up, were searched aiming to identify those who developed AM, from January 1st 2002 to January 31st 2022. The following data were collected and analysed: demographic features, implant type and side, interval between CI surgery and AM, treatment, laboratory tests, clinical course, vaccination history, associated diseases. RESULTS AM was developed by six (1.3%) of the 439 children with CI (541 implanted ears). In total, 9 episodes (2.05 %) were recorded, as three patients reported two consecutive infections. Average time interval between CI surgery, to the first or only AM diagnosis, was 13.8 months (range 3-30 months). Furthermore, 3/6 of patients had a history of recurrent acute otitis media; 2/6 an autism spectrum disorder, associated to a combined immune deficiency in one case. All patients were hospitalized and promptly treated by intravenous antibiotic therapy; 4/6 also underwent a mastoidectomy. CI was not explanted in any cases of this series. CONCLUSIONS Over a 20-year period, AM rate in CI children was 1.3%, which is consistent with the current literature rates of 1-4.7%. All cases were successfully treated, preserving the integrity of the device. In our experience, the early parenteral antibiotic therapy and, when necessary, surgical treatment were adequate to eradicate the infection.

Abstract
Flat epithelium (FE) is a condition characterized by the loss of both hair cells (HCs) and supporting cells and the transformation of the organ of Corti into a simple flat or cuboidal epithelium, which can occur after severe cochlear insults. The transcription factors Gfi1, Atoh1, Pou4f3, and Six1 (GAPS) play key roles in HC differentiation and survival in normal ears. Previous work using a single transcription factor, Atoh1, to induce HC regeneration in mature ears in vivo usually produced very few cells and failed to produce HCs in severely damaged organs of Corti, especially those with FE. Studies in vitro suggested combinations of transcription factors may be more effective than any single factor, thus the current study aims to examine the effect of co-overexpressing GAPS genes in deafened mature guinea pig cochleae with FE. Deafening was achieved through the infusion of neomycin into the perilymph, leading to the formation of FE and substantial degeneration of nerve fibers. Seven days post neomycin treatment, adenovirus vectors carrying GAPS were injected into the scala media and successfully expressed in the FE. One or two months following GAPS inoculation, cells expressing Myosin VIIa were observed in regions under the FE (located at the scala tympani side of the basilar membrane), rather than within the FE. The number of cells, which we define as induced HCs (iHCs), was not significantly different between one and two months, but the larger N at two months made it more apparent that there were significantly more iHCs in GAPS treated animals than in controls. Additionally, qualitative observations indicated that ears with GAPS gene expression in the FE had more nerve fibers than FE without the treatment. In summary, our results showed that co-overexpression of GAPS enhances the potential for HC regeneration in a severe lesion model of FE.

Abstract
The extracellular matrix (ECM) consists in a complex meshwork of collagens, glycoproteins, and proteoglycans, which serves a scaffolding function and provides viscoelastic properties to the tissues. ECM acts as a biomechanical support, and actively participates in cell signaling to induce tissular changes in response to environmental forces and soluble cues. Given the remarkable complexity of the inner ear architecture, its exquisite structure-function relationship, and the importance of vibration-induced stimulation of its sensory cells, ECM is instrumental to hearing. Many factors of the matrisome are involved in cochlea development, function and maintenance, as evidenced by the variety of ECM proteins associated with hereditary deafness. This review describes the structural and functional ECM components in the auditory organ and how they are modulated over time and following injury.

Abstract
We present a psycholinguistic study investigating lexical effects on simplified Chinese character recognition by deaf readers. Prior research suggests that deaf readers exhibit efficient orthographic processing and decreased reliance on speech-based phonology in word recognition compared to hearing readers. In this large-scale character decision study (25 participants, each evaluating 2500 real characters and 2500 pseudo-characters), we analyzed various factors influencing character recognition accuracy and speed in deaf readers. Deaf participants demonstrated greater accuracy and faster recognition when characters were more frequent, were acquired earlier, had more strokes, displayed higher orthographic complexity, were more imageable in reference, or were less concrete in reference. Comparison with a previous study of hearing readers revealed that the facilitative effect of frequency on character decision accuracy was stronger for deaf readers than hearing readers. The effect of orthographic-phonological regularity differed significantly for the two groups, indicating that deaf readers rely more on orthographic structure and less on phonological information during character recognition. Notably, increased stroke counts (i.e., higher orthographic complexity) hindered hearing readers but facilitated recognition processes in deaf readers, suggesting that deaf readers excel at recognizing characters based on orthographic structure. The database generated from this large-scale character decision study offers a valuable resource for further research and practical applications in deaf education and literacy.

Abstract
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, universities made face masks mandatory during face-to-face classes and/or switched to virtual classes. Such situations pose a challenge for students with hearing loss as they generate listening conditions that make speech comprehension difficult. This study aimed to explore the listening difficulties perceived by Italian university students with hearing loss (HL) and typical hearing (TH) as well as their adoption of self-advocacy strategies . We measured listening difficulties as a function of teaching modality (face-to-face and virtual classes) and the type of face mask (opaque and transparent) worn by the lecturer. In face-to-face classes, the most challenging situations for HL students involved speech comprehension when groups of students were working simultaneously and lecturers talked and moved at the same time during their lessons. The use of transparent masks, compared to opaque one, by the lecturer did not reduce the perceived listening difficulties . In virtual classes, the greatest listening difficulties for HL students occurred when the lecturer's face was not visible or she/he did not use a microphone, while subtitles and sign language interpreters were speech comprehension facilitators. The TH group perceived the same situations as most challenging both in face-to-face and virtual classes, albeit to a lesser extent than the HL respondents. Despite most students demonstrated proactive self-advocacy strategies to improve speech comprehension, in some listening contexts inactive behaviors still persisted. To reduce the listening difficulties posed by pandemic measures, training to improve students' self-advocacy strategies and educators' hearing loss awareness behaviors, as well as the development of interventions aimed at reducing noise in classes, are essential to improve speech perception among HL students.

Abstract
Pattern recognition of specific temporal bone radiological phenotypes, in association with abnormalities in other organ systems, is critical in the diagnosis and management of syndromic causes of hearing loss. Several recent publications have demonstrated the presence of specific radiological appearances, allowing precise genetic and/or syndromic diagnosis, in the right clinical context. This review article aims to provide an extensive but practical guide to the radiologist dealing with syndromic causes of hearing loss.

Abstract
Inner speech refers to the experience of talking to oneself in one's head. While notoriously challenging to investigate, it has also been central to a range of questions concerning mind, brain, and behaviour. Posited as a key component in executive function and self-regulation, inner speech has been claimed to be crucial in higher cognitive operations, self-knowledge and self-awareness. Such arguments have traditionally been supported with examples of atypical development. But variations in inner speech - and in some cases, significant diversity - in fact pose several key challenges to such claims, and raises many more questions for, language, thought and mental health more generally. In this review, we will summarise evidence on the experience and operation of inner speech in child and adult neurotypical populations, autistic people and other neurodivergent groups, and people with diverse experiences of linguistic and sensory development, including deafness. We will demonstrate that the relationship between inner speech and cognitive operations may be more complex than first assumed when explored through the lens of cognitive and neurological diversity, and the implications of that for understanding the developing brain in all populations. We discuss why and how the experience of inner speech in neurodivergent groups has often been assumed rather than investigated, making it an important opportunity for researchers to develop innovative future work that integrates participatory insights with cognitive methodology. Finally, we will outline why variations in inner speech - in neurotypical and neurodivergent populations alike - nevertheless have a range of important implications for mental health vulnerability and unmet need. In this sense, the example of inner speech offers us both a way of looking back at the logic of developmental psychology and neuropsychology, and a clue to its future in a neurodiverse world.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Approximately 235,000 deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) people live in Germany. Due to communication barriers, medical care for this group is difficult in many respects. Especially in the case of acute illnesses, the possibilities of communication, e.g., through sign language interpreters, are limited. This study investigates the satisfaction of DHH patients with medical care in Germany in unplanned medical consultations. The aim of this study is to provide insights into DHH patient's perception of medical care, to identify barriers and avoidance behaviours that stem from fears, miscommunication, and prior experiences. METHODS We obtained data from adult DHH participants between February and April 2022 throughout Germany via an online survey in German Sign Language. The responses of N = 383 participants (65% female, M = 44 years, SD = 12.70 years) were included in statistical analyses. Outcomes were convictions of receiving help, satisfaction with healthcare provision, and avoiding healthcare visits; further variables were concerns during healthcare visits, incidences of miscommunication, and a communication score. We calculated t-tests, ANOVAs, correlations, and linear and logistic regression analyses. RESULTS Our main findings show that (1) DHH patients were unsatisfied with provided healthcare (M = 3.88; SD = 2.34; range 0-10); (2) DHH patients reported many concerns primarily about communication and treatment aspects when visiting a doctor; and (3) 57% of participants deliberately avoided doctor visits even though they experienced symptoms. Factors such as concerns during doctor's visits (B = -0.18; 95%CI: -0.34--0.02; p = .027) or miscommunication with medical staff (B = -0.19; 95%CI: -0.33-0.06; p = .006) were associated with satisfaction with medical care, while we found almost no associations with gender and location, and only few with age and education. CONCLUSIONS Overall, our findings suggest that DHH patients are unsatisfied with provided healthcare, they deliberately avoid doctor visits, and they face various communication barriers. This study revealed several communication-related determinants of satisfaction with healthcare in DHH patients, such as incidences of miscommunication and the communication score. Communication-related barriers have high potential to be addressed in collaboration with the DHH community. To improve the medical care and the satisfaction with healthcare in DHH patients, training healthcare professionals, digital technologies, and other communication-enhancing interventions should be explored in future intervention studies.

Abstract
Autosomal recessive keratitis-ichthyosis-deafness syndrome (KIDAR MIM #242150) is a very rare disorder caused by pathogenic loss-of-function variants in the AP1B1 gene. So far, nine patients have been reported in the literature and more clinical descriptions are essential to further delineate the phenotype of KIDAR. Here we report a new patient with KIDAR and compare the clinical findings with those from the other published cases with molecular confirmation. We describe a 14-year-old male born to non-consanguineous parents with unremarkable family history. The patient had fetal ascites, neonatal pancreatic insufficiency with consequent failure to thrive, feeding difficulties, recurrent infections and sepsis. The skin examination was remarkable for an ichthyosis with conspicuous palmoplantar keratoderma, sparse and brittle hair with alopecia on the vertex and slight bilateral ectropion. He had short stature, thin build, frontal bossing, small teeth and prominent abdomen. Additional features were congenital profound bilateral sensorineural deafness, photosensitivity and photophobia. Mild global developmental delay was noted. Persistent mild anemia, neutropenia, thrombocytopenia, and low serum copper, ceruloplasmin and growth hormone were also present. Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed cerebral atrophy and thin corpus callosum. Genetic testing revealed a homozygous deletion in the AP1B1 gene, possibly including the same exons as a previously reported deletion. Comparing the phenotypes of all reported individuals, they are highly concordant and major features are enteropathy with feeding difficulties, failure to thrive, ichthyosis, palmoplantar keratoderma, sensorineural deafness and sparse and brittle hair. Here we report other features present in more than one patient that could be part of the phenotypic spectrum and suggest copy number variation analysis to be performed alongside sequencing of the AP1B1 gene in case of suspicion.

Abstract
PURPOSE Although recessive mutations in GJB2 are the common genetic etiology of sensorineural hearing impairment (SNHI), variants in LRTOMT gene were also identified, mostly in Middle East and North African populations. METHODS Using Sanger sequencing we screened the exon 7 of LRTOMT in a cohort of 128 unrelated Mauritanian children with congenital deafness. RESULTS Only one biallelic missense mutation, predicted as pathogenic (c.179 T > C;p.Leu60Pro) was found at homozygous state in four families. This variant, not reported before, showed a deleterious effect by SIFT (score: 0.01) and a disease-causing effect by Mutation Taster (prob: 1). Exploration of the encoded protein 3D structure revealed a disruption from an organized α helix (in the normal protein structure) into a random conformation. Early fitting of a cochlear implant seemed to improve the audition ability of the mutation carrier. CONCLUSION Further screening using a panel of deafness genes may expose other variants underlying hearing impairment in our population.

Abstract
PURPOSE Implantable hearing devices are indicated for candidates who could not benefit from conventional hearing aids. This study aimed at evaluating their effectiveness in rehabilitation of hearing loss. METHODS This study included patients who received bone conduction implants at Tertiary Teaching Hospitals, between December 2018 and November 2020. Data were collected prospectively, and patients were assessed both subjectively using COSI and GHABP questionnaires and objectively using bone conduction and air conduction thresholds, unaided and aided free field speech thresholds. Outcomes of transcutaneous (tBCHD) and percutaneous (pBCHD) bone conduction hearing devices were compared as well as outcomes of unilateral versus bilateral fitting. Postoperative skin complications were recorded and compared. RESULTS A total of seventy patients were included, thirty-seven of them were implanted with tBCHD and thirty-three with pBCHD. Fifty-five patients were fitted unilaterally compared to 15 bilateral fitting. Preoperative mean of bone conduction (BC) of the overall sample was 23.27 ± 10.91 dB, the Air conduction (AC) mean was 69.27 ± 13.75 dB. There was significant difference between unaided free field speech score (88.51% ± 7.92) and the aided score (96.79 ± 2.38) with P value = 0.00001. The postoperative assessment using GHABP showed a benefit score mean of 70.95 ± 18.79, patient satisfaction score mean of 78.15 ± 18.39. The disability score improved significantly from a mean of 54.08 ± 15.26 to residual score of only 12.50 ± 10.22 with P < 0.00001 postoperatively. There was significant improvement in all parameters of COSI questionnaire following fitting. Comparison of pBCHDs vs tBCHDs showed a non-significant difference regarding FF speech as well as GHABP parameters. Comparison of the post-operative skin complications was in favor of tBCHDs as (86.5%) of the patients had normal skin postoperatively, compared to 45.5% of patients with pBCHDs devices. Bilateral implantation showed significant improvement of FF speech scores, GHABP satisfaction score, as well as COSI score results. CONCLUSION Bone conduction hearing devices are effective solution for rehabilitation of hearing loss. Bilateral fitting yields satisfactory outcomes in suitable candidates. Transcutaneous devices carry significantly lower skin complication rates compared to percutaneous devices.

Abstract
Dystonia deafness syndrome (DDS) is a rare syndrome characterized by childhood onset sensorineural deafness followed by adult-onset dystonia. We here report the first case of DDS from India caused by ACTB gene mutation presented with deafness, generalized dystonia and scoliosis who showed improvement after Deep brain stimulation.

Abstract
Inner ear hair cells assemble mechanosensitive hair bundles on their apical surface that transduce sounds and accelerations. Each hair bundle is comprised of ∼ 100 individual stereocilia that are arranged into rows of increasing height and width; their specific and precise architecture being necessary for mechanoelectrical transduction (MET). The actin cytoskeleton is fundamental to establishing this architecture, not only by forming the structural scaffold shaping each stereocilium, but also by composing rootlets and the cuticular plate that together provide a stable foundation supporting each stereocilium. In concert with the actin cytoskeleton, a large assortment of actin-binding proteins (ABPs) function to cross-link actin filaments into specific topologies, as well as control actin filament growth, severing, and capping. These processes are individually critical for sensory transduction and are all disrupted in hereditary forms of human hearing loss. In this review, we provide an overview of actin-based structures in the hair bundle and the molecules contributing to their assembly and functional properties. We also highlight recent advances in mechanisms driving stereocilia elongation and how these processes are tuned by MET.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Pain is a common reason for seeking out healthcare professionals and support services. However, certain populations, such as people with deafness, may encounter difficulties in effectively communicating their pain; on the other side, health care professionals may also encounter challenges to assess pain in this specific population. AIMS To describe (a) the state of the research in the field of pain assessment in individuals with deafness; (b) instruments validated; and (b) strategies facilitating the pain communication or assessment in this population. METHODS A systematic review in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis guidelines were performed, searching Medline, CINAHL, Scopus, Embase and PsycInfo databases, from their initiation to July 2023. Primary and secondary studies, involving adults with deafness and investigating pain assessment and communication difficulties, facilitators, or barriers, were eligible. The included studies were assessed in their methodological quality with the Quality Assessment for Diverse Studies tool; data extraction and the narrative synthesis was provided by two researchers. RESULTS Five studies were included. Two were validation studies, while the remaining were a case report, a case study and a qualitative study. The interRAI Community Health Assessment and the Deafblind Supplement scale have been validated among people with deafness by reporting few psychometric properties; in contrast, instruments well established in the general population (e.g. Visual Analogue Scale) have been assessed in their usability and understandability among individuals with deafness, suggesting their limitations. Some strategies have been documented as facilitating pain communication and assessment: (a) ensuring inclusiveness (the presence of family members as mediators); (b) ensuring the preparedness of healthcare professionals (e.g. in sign language); and (c) making the environment friendly to this population (e.g. removing masks). CONCLUSIONS The research regarding pain in this population is in its infancy, resulting in limited evidence. In recommending more research capable of establishing the best pain assessment instrument, some strategies emerged for assessing pain in which the minimum standards of care required to offer to this vulnerable population should be considered.

Abstract
Comprehensive insights into balance control of individuals with hearing impairment are compared with individuals with hearing. Primary sources were obtained from 7 databases including PubMed, LILACS, SCOPUS, CINAHL, PEDro, CENTRAL, and Web of Science. The search period extended from inception until January 5, 2022. The systematic review included 24 studies and 27 trials, with a total of 2,148 participants. The meta-analysis showed a significant difference in the average balance control between individuals with hearing impairment and individuals with hearing, with individuals with hearing having a favorable advantage (p = 0.001). Additionally, average balance control was found to be in favor of individuals with hearing (p = 0.001) when comparing individuals with hearing impairment who participated in sports. Finally, individuals with hearing impairment who participated in sports demonstrated a significantly higher average difference in balance control (p = 0.001) when compared to sedentary people with hearing impairment. Our meta-analysis results indicate a balance defect in individuals with hearing impairment compared to individuals with hearing. In addition, with increasing age, the balance in individuals with hearing impairment improved. Additionally, the dependence of individuals with hearing impairment on the visual and proprioception systems to maintain balance increased. Finally, there was more dependence on the proprioception than the visual system, while individuals with hearing had stronger average balance control than individuals with hearing impairment who participated in sports, when compared to sedentary people with hearing impairment.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Hearing impairment in older adults may affect cognitive function and increase the risk of dementia. Most cognitive tests are delivered auditorily, and individuals with hearing loss may fail to hear verbal instructions. Greater listening difficulty and fatigue in acoustic conditions may impact test performance. This study aimed to examine the effect of decreased audibility on cognitive screening test performance in older adults. METHOD Older adults (n = 63) with different levels of hearing loss completed a standard auditory Mini-Mental State Examination test and a written version of the test. RESULTS Individuals with moderate to moderately severe hearing loss (41-70 dB) performed significantly better on the written (24.34 ± 4.90) than on the standard test (22.55 ± 6.25), whereas scores were not impacted for mild hearing loss (less than 40 dB). CONCLUSION Hearing evaluations should be included in cognitive assessment, and test performance should be carefully interpreted in individuals with hearing loss to avoid overestimating cognitive decline.

Abstract
Non-syndromic sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) is the most common sensory disorder, and it presents a high genetic heterogeneity. As part of our clinical genetic studies, we ascertained a previously unreported mutation in CCDC50 [c.828_858del, p.(Asp276Glufs*40)] segregating with hearing impairment in a Spanish family with SNHL associated with the autosomal dominant deafness locus DFNA44, which is predicted to disrupt protein function. To gain insight into the mechanism behind DFNA44 mutations, we analysed two Ccdc50 presumed loss-of-function mouse mutants, which showed normal hearing thresholds up to 6 months of age, indicating that haploinsufficiency is unlikely to be the pathogenic mechanism. We then carried out in vitro studies on a set of artificial mutants and on the p.(Asp276Glufs*40) and p.(Phe292Hisfs*37) human mutations, and determined that only the mutants containing the six-amino-acid sequence CLENGL as part of their aberrant protein tail showed an abnormal distribution consisting of perinuclear aggregates of the CCDC50 protein (also known as Ymer). Therefore, we conclude that the CLENGL sequence is necessary to form these aggregates. Taken together, the in vivo and in vitro results obtained in this study suggest that the two identified mutations in CCDC50 exert their effect through a dominant-negative or gain-of-function mechanism rather than by haploinsufficiency.

Abstract
Wolfram syndrome (WS) is a rare neurodegenerative and genetic disorder, also known by the synonym DIDMOAD, which stands for diabetes insipidus (DI), childhood-onset diabetes mellitus (DM), optic atrophy (OA), and deafness (D). We present a case of a 25-year-old diabetic patient, using insulin for 15 years, who had increasing polyuria and polydipsia, along with progressive hearing and vision loss. Laboratory tests revealed elevated hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) and blood sugar levels. Optic nerve, optic chiasm, pons, and brain stem atrophy was seen on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of brain. After workup, a diagnosis of DI was made. Once the diagnosis was reached, treatment with subcutaneous insulin and nasal desmopressin improved patient's symptoms. In juvenile diabetic patients presenting with new onset or worsening polyuria and polydipsia, the possibility of WS should be considered. Early diagnosis and initiation of appropriate management leads to improved outcomes and the quality of life.

Abstract
The Australian Placental Transfusion Study (APTS) randomised 1,634 fetuses to delayed (≥60 s) versus immediate (≤10 s) clamping of the umbilical cord. Systematic reviews with meta-analyses, including this and similar trials, show that delaying clamping in preterm infants reduces mortality and need for blood transfusions. Amongst 1,531 infants in APTS followed up at two years, aiming to delay clamping for 60 s or more reduced the relative risk of the primary composite outcome of death or disability by 17% (p = 0.01). However, this result is fragile because nominal statistical significance (p < 0.05) would be abolished by only 2 patients switching from a non-event to an event, and the primary composite outcome was missing in 112 patients (7%). To achieve more robust evidence, any future trials should emulate the large, simple trials co-ordinated from Oxford which reliably identified moderate, incremental improvements in mortality in tens of thousands of participants, with <1% missing data. Those who fund, regulate, and conduct trials that aim to change practice should repay the trust of those who consent to participate by doing everything possible to minimise missing data for key outcomes.

Abstract
Hearing loss is considered the most common birth defect. The estimated prevalence of moderate and severe hearing loss in a normal newborn is 0.1%-0.3%, while the prevalence is 2%-4% in newborns admitted to the newborn intensive care unit. Neonatal hearing loss can be congenital (syndromic or non-syndromic) or acquired such as ototoxicity. In addition, the types of hearing loss can be conductive, sensorineural, or mixed. Hearing is vital for the acquisition of language and learning. Therefore, early detection and prompt treatment are of utmost importance in preventing the unwanted sequel of hearing loss. The hearing screening program is mandatory in many nations, especially for high-risk newborns. An automated auditory brainstem response test is used as a screening tool in newborns admitted to the newborn intensive care unit. Moreover, genetic testing and screening for cytomegalovirus in newborns are essential in identifying the cause of hearing loss, particularly, mild and delayed onset types of hearing loss. We aimed to update the knowledge on the various aspects of hearing loss in newborns with regard to the epidemiology, risk factors, causes, screening program, investigations, and different modalities of treatment.

OBJECTIVES This study aims to systematically review health education interventions targeting individuals with hearing impairment. METHODS A total of 18 studies were selected based on search results from five databases, and quality appraisal was conducted using an appropriate tool based on the study design. The extracted results were described using qualitative analysis. RESULTS Among the selected studies, most interventions focused on specific cancers, and video materials were the most common delivery method. Various strategies were applied depending on the type of materials provided, in addition to sign language interpretation and the involvement of hearing-impaired related personnel. The interventions primarily resulted in a significant increase in knowledge. CONCLUSION This study suggests several recommendations, including expanding the scope of interventions to cover various chronic diseases, actively utilizing the features of video materials, considering health literacy, using peer support groups, and measuring behavior-related factors alongside knowledge levels. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS This study makes a significant contribution to understanding the unique characteristics of the population with hearing impairment. Furthermore, it has the potential to facilitate the development of high-quality health education interventions for individuals with hearing impairment by providing insights into future research directions based on existing health education interventions.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to report on the educational placement, quality of life and speech reception changes in a prospectively recruited group of children after they received a cochlear implant (CI). METHOD Data was collected on 1085 CI recipients of as part of a prospective, longitudinal, observational, international, multi-centre, paediatric registry, initiated by Cochlear Ltd (Sydney, NSW, Australia). Outcome data from children (≤10 years old) implanted in routine practice was voluntarily entered into a central, externally hosted, e-platform. Collection occurred prior to initial device activation (baseline) and at six monthly follow-up intervals up to 24 months and then at 3 years post activation. Clinician reported baseline and follow up questionnaires and Categories of Auditory Performance version II (CAP-II) outcomes were collated. Self-reported evaluation forms and patient information were provided by the parent/caregiver/patient via the implant recipient baseline and follow up, Children Using Hearing Implants Quality of Life (CuHIQoL) and Speech Spatial Qualities (SSQ-P) Parents Version questionnaires. RESULTS Children were mainly bilaterally profoundly deaf, unilaterally implanted and used a contralateral hearing aid. Prior to implant 60% used signing or total communication as their main mode of communication. Mean age at implant was 3.2 ± 2.2 years (range 0-10 years). At baseline 8.6% were in mainstream education with no additional support and 82% had not yet entered school. After three years of implant use, 52% had entered mainstream education with no additional support and 38% had not yet entered school. In the sub-group of 141 children who were implanted at or after three years of age and were thus old enough to be in mainstream school at the three-year follow up, an even higher proportion (73%) were in mainstream education with no support. Quality of life scores for the child improved statistically significantly post implant compared to baseline and continued to improve significantly at each interval up to 3 years (p < 0.001). Parental expectation scores reduced statistically significantly from baseline compared to all intervals (p < 0.028) and then increased significantly at 3 years compared to all post baseline follow-up intervals (p < 0.006). The impact on family life was reduced post implant compared to baseline and continued to reduce between annual intervals (p < 0.001). At three years post follow up median CAP II scores were 7 (IQR 6-7) and mean SSQ-P scores were 6.8 (SD1.9) 6.0 (SD1.9) and 7.4 (SD 2.3) for speech spatial and qualities scales respectively. SSQ-P and CAP II scores improved statistically and clinically significantly compared to baseline by one year post implantation. CAP II scores continued to improve at each test interval up to three years post implant. Speech and Qualities scores improved significantly between years 1 and 2 (p < 0.001), but only the Speech scores improved significantly between years 2 and 3 (p = 0.004). CONCLUSIONS Mainstream educational placement was achievable for most of the children, including those implanted at an older age. Quality of life for the child and the wider family improved. Future research could focus on the impact of mainstream school placement on children's academic progress, including measures of academic attainment and social functioning.

Abstract
The auditory brainstem implant (ABI) is an auditory neuroprosthesis that provides hearing by electrically stimulating the cochlear nucleus (CN) of the brainstem. Our previous study (McInturff et al., 2022) showed that single-pulse stimulation of the dorsal (D)CN subdivision with low levels of current evokes responses that have early latencies, different than the late response patterns observed from stimulation of the ventral (V)CN. How these differing responses encode more complex stimuli, such as pulse trains and amplitude modulated (AM) pulses, has not been explored. Here, we compare responses to pulse train stimulation of the DCN and VCN, and show that VCN responses, measured in the inferior colliculus (IC), have less adaption, higher synchrony, and higher cross-correlation. However, with high-level DCN stimulation, responses become like those to VCN stimulation, supporting our earlier hypothesis that current spreads from electrodes on the DCN to excite neurons located in the VCN. To AM pulses, stimulation of the VCN elicits responses with larger vector strengths and gain values especially in the high-CF portion of the IC. Additional analysis using neural measures of modulation thresholds indicate that these measures are lowest for VCN. Human ABI users with low modulation thresholds, who score best on comprehension tests, may thus have electrode arrays that stimulate the VCN. Overall, the results show that the VCN has superior response characteristics and suggest that it should be the preferred target for ABI electrode arrays in humans.

Abstract
Sensory experience shapes brain structure and function, and it is likely to influence the organisation of functional networks of the brain, including those involved in cognitive processing. Here we investigated the influence of early deafness on the organisation of resting-state networks of the brain and its relation to executive processing. We compared resting-state connectivity between deaf and hearing individuals across 18 functional networks and 400 ROIs. Our results showed significant group differences in connectivity between seeds of the auditory network and most large-scale networks of the brain, in particular the somatomotor and salience/ventral attention networks. When we investigated group differences in resting-state fMRI and their link to behavioural performance in executive function tasks (working memory, inhibition and switching), differences between groups were found in the connectivity of association networks of the brain, such as the salience/ventral attention and default-mode networks. These findings indicate that sensory experience influences not only the organisation of sensory networks, but that it also has a measurable impact on the organisation of association networks supporting cognitive processing. Overall, our findings suggest that different developmental pathways and functional organisation can support executive processing in the adult brain.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Ultra-rare mendelian osteolytic disorders caused by different length in-frame activating duplications within exon 1 of TNFRSF11A encoding receptor activator of nuclear factor-kappa B (RANK) comprise familial expansile osteolysis (FEO), expansile skeletal hyperphosphatasia (ESH), early-onset familial Paget's disease of bone (PDB2), juvenile Paget's disease 2 (JPD2), and panostotic expansile bone disease (PEBD). FEO typically presents with childhood-onset deafness followed by resorption of permanent dentition, and then appendicular bone pain, fractures, and deformities from progressive focal expansile osteolytic lesions emerging from a background of generalized high bone turnover. An 18-bp duplication in TNFRSF11A has been reported in all kindreds with FEO, whereas a 12-bp duplication was found in the young man with PEBD complicated by a massive jaw tumor. We report the clinical course and successful treatment with bisphosphonates of a girl with the 12-bp duplication yet a skeletal phenotype seemingly milder than PEBD. CASE PRESENTATION AND DISCUSSION This 10-year-old girl presented for dental and orthodontic treatment and was found to have progressive external tooth root resorption. Speech delay was identified at age 18 months, and audiological evaluation showed both conductive and sensorineural hearing loss subsequently treated with a cochlear implant at age 3 years. Biochemical studies indicated increased bone turnover with elevated urinary N-telopeptide levels and serum alkaline phosphatase in the upper normal range. Low lumbar spine bone mineral density (BMD) was revealed by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, but whole-body Technetium-99 m bone scintigraphy was normal. Genetic testing identified the identical de novo 12-bp duplication within exon 1 of TNFRSF11A harbored by the young man with PEBD and massive jaw tumor. Bisphosphonate treatment, initiated with one dose of intravenous zoledronic acid that caused prolonged hypocalcemia, then comprised weekly oral alendronate that decreased bone turnover markers and normalized her BMD. CONCLUSION Constitutive activation of RANK signaling should be considered a possible cause in any young person with rapid bone turnover, particularly in the context of early-onset deafness and/or root resorption of permanent teeth. Early diagnosis and anti-resorptive treatment, given judiciously to avoid sudden and prolonged hypocalcemia, may prevent further skeletal disease.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Numerous health disparities are documented in deaf population research, but few empirical sleep assessments exist for this under-served population, despite knowledge that sleep contributes to physical and mental health disparities. We sought to document subjective and objective sleep in deaf adults with cross-sectional and prospective measures. METHODS Twenty deaf participants completed validated sleep and mental health questionnaires, 2-weeks of nightly sleep diaries and continuous wrist-worn actigraphy monitoring, and 1-week of nightly, reduced-montage EEG recordings. RESULTS Questionnaire data suggest high prevalence of insomnia (70%), poor sleep (75%), daytime sleepiness (25%) and nightmares (20%) among participants. Strong correlations were found between depression and sleep quality, fear of sleep, and insomnia severity (p's < .005). Objective sleep assessments suggest elevated wake after sleep onset and low sleep efficiency and sleep duration. CONCLUSIONS The prevalence of sleep disturbance recorded from self-report and objective sleep measures provides preliminary evidence of sleep health disparity among deaf adults.

Abstract
Lipomas inside the internal auditory canal are infrequent. We describe a 43 years old woman who complains about sudden unilateral deafness, tinnitus and dizziness. With CT and RMN we make a certain diagnosis of lipoma inside the internal auditory canal. Due to the absence of limitations, we offer an annual follow up for assessing the patient's clinical situation. Abstract
Studies of deaf and hard-of-hearing (henceforth, deaf) children tend to make comparisons with typically hearing children for the purpose of either identifying deficits to be remediated or understanding the impact of auditory deprivation on visual or domain general processing. Here, we eschew these clinical and theoretical aims, seeking instead to understand factors that explain variability in cognitive function within deaf children. A total of 108 bilingual deaf children ages 7-13 years who use both English and American Sign Language (ASL) participated in a longitudinal study of executive function (EF) development. We report longitudinal data from a visual continuous performance task that measured sustained selective attention and response inhibition. Results show that the impact of deafness on these processes is negligible, but that language skills have a positive relationship with both: better English abilities were associated with better selective sustained attention, and better ASL abilities with better response inhibition. The relationship between sustained selective attention and English abilities may reflect the cognitive demands of spoken language acquisition for deaf children, whereas better ASL abilities may promote an "inner voice," associated with improved response inhibition. The current study cannot conclusively demonstrate causality or directionality of effects. However, these data highlight the importance of studies that focus on atypical individuals, for whom the relationships between language and cognition may be different from those observed in typically developing populations.

Based on these premises, the primary aim of the present study was to assess the long-term speech and language outcomes in a sample of prelingually deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) adolescents and young adults with unilateral or bilateral implantation in childhood. The secondary aim was to investigate the correlations of age at implantation with long-term speech and language outcomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS Retrospective observational study on 54 long-term CI users, 33 unilateral and 21 bilateral (mean age at CI surgery 38.1 ± 24.6 months; mean age at last follow-up assessment 19.1 ± 4.3 years of age and mean follow-up time 16 ± 3.7 years). Means and standards were used to describe speech perception (in quiet, in fixed noise and in adaptive noise using It-Matrix) and morphosyntactic comprehension (TROG-2) outcomes. A univariate analysis was used to evaluate outcome differences between unilateral and bilateral patients. Bivariate analysis was performed to investigate the relationships between age at CI, audiological variables, and language outcomes. Finally, multivariate analysis was performed to quantify the relationship between It-Matrix, sentence recognition in quiet and at SNR+10 and TROG-2. RESULTS The participants showed good speech recognition performance in quiet (94% for words and 89% for sentences) whilst their speech-in-noise scores decreased significantly. For the It-Matrix, only 9.2% of the participants showed scores within the normative range. This value was 60% for TROG-2 performance. For both auditory and language skills, group differences for unilateral versus bilateral CI users were not statistically significant (p > 0.05). Bivariate analysis showed that age at CI correlated significantly with overall results at TROG-2 (r = -0.6; p < 0.001) and with It-Matrix (r = 0.5; p < 0.001). TROG-2 was negatively correlated with results for It-Matrix (r = -0.5; p < 0.001). In the multivariate analysis with It-Matrix as a dependent variable, the model explained 63% of the variance, of which 60% was related to sentence recognition and 3% to morphosyntax. CONCLUSIONS These data contribute to the definition of average long-term outcomes expected in subjects implanted during childhood whilst increasing our knowledge of the effects of variables such as age at CI and morphosyntactic comprehension on speech perception. Although the majority of this prelingually DHH cohort did not achieve scores within a normative range, remarkably better It-Matrix scores were observed when compared to those from postlingually deafened adult CI users.

Abstract
Deafness is a highly heterogeneous disorder which stems, for 50%, from genetic origins. Sensory transduction relies mainly on sensory hair cells of the cochlea, in the inner ear. Calcium is key for the function of these cells and acts as a fundamental signal transduction. Its homeostasis depends on three factors: the calcium influx, through the mechanotransduction channel at the apical pole of the hair cell as well as the voltage-gated calcium channel at the base of the cells; the calcium buffering via Ca2+-binding proteins in the cytoplasm, but also in organelles such as mitochondria and the reticulum endoplasmic mitochondria-associated membranes with specialized proteins; and the calcium extrusion through the Ca-ATPase pump, located all over the plasma membrane. In addition, the synaptic transmission to the central nervous system is also controlled by calcium. Genetic studies of inherited deafness have tremendously helped understand the underlying molecular pathways of calcium signaling. In this review, we discuss these different factors in light of the associated genetic diseases (syndromic and non-syndromic deafness) and the causative genes.
