Implications of depressive mood in OSAHS patients: insights from event-related potential

BACKGROUND

Obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) is a chronic breathing disorder characterized by recurrent upper airway obstruction during sleep. Although previous studies have shown a link between OSAHS and depressive mood, the neurobiological mechanisms underlying mood disorders in OSAHS patients remain poorly understood. This study aims to investigate the emotion processing mechanism in OSAHS patients with depressive mood using event-related potentials (ERPs).

METHODS

Seventy-four OSAHS patients were divided into the depressive mood and non-depressive mood groups according to their Self-rating Depression Scale (SDS) scores. Patients underwent overnight polysomnography and completed various cognitive and emotional questionnaires. The patients were shown facial images displaying positive, neutral, and negative emotions and tasked to identify the emotion category, while their visual evoked potential was simultaneously recorded.

RESULTS

The two groups did not differ significantly in age, BMI, and years of education, but showed significant differences in their slow wave sleep ratio (P = 0.039), ESS (P = 0.006), MMSE (P < 0.001), and MOCA scores (P = 0.043). No significant difference was found in accuracy and response time on emotional face recognition between the two groups. N170 latency in the depressive group was significantly longer than the non-depressive group (P = 0.014 and 0.007) at the bilateral parieto-occipital lobe, while no significant difference in N170 amplitude was found. No significant difference in P300 amplitude or latency between the two groups. Furthermore, N170 amplitude at PO7 was positively correlated with the arousal index and negatively with MOCA scores (both P < 0.01).

CONCLUSION

OSAHS patients with depressive mood exhibit increased N170 latency and impaired facial emotion recognition ability. Special attention towards the depressive mood among OSAHS patients is warranted for its implications for patient care.

Association between depressive mood and body image and menopausal symptoms and sexual function in perimenopausal women

BACKGROUND

Perimenopausal is the period when women's ovarian function begins to decline before and after menopause. During this period, women experience a series of mental state changes, such as decreased hormone levels, decreased libido, and even female sexual dysfunction (FSD) in severe cases, which reduces their quality of life. Factors affecting the occurrence of FSD include physiological and non-physiological factors, among which physiological factors are uncontrollable. Therefore, it is particularly important to ascertain the related non-physiological factors that affect the occurrence of FSD for improving the quality of sexual life of perimenopausal women.

AIM

To investigate the mediating effect of depressive mood and body image on menopausal symptoms and sexual function in perimenopausal women.

METHODS

A total of 186 perimenopausal women were enrolled between January 2019 and January 2021 and divided into the FSD (134 cases) and control (52 cases) groups based on the presence and absence of FSD. Clinical data were compared between the two groups. FSD-related factors were analyzed using logistic regression analysis. Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD), Body Image Scale (BIS), and Menopause Rating Scale (MRS) scores were compared among women with different FSD scores. The correlation of the MRS score with the BIS and HAMD scores and the mediating effect of the BIS and HAMD scores on the MRS score and female sexual function index (FSFI) were analyzed.

RESULTS

The HAMD and BIS scores were higher in the FSD group than in the control group, and the difference in monthly income between the two groups was statistically significant (all P < 0.05). Monthly income of < 2000 yuan [odds ratio (OR) = 26.586, P = 0.000], BIS score (OR = 1.590, P = 0.000), and HAMD score (OR = 1.884, P = 0.000) were independent risk factors for FSD. MRS scores were positively correlated with BIS and HAMD scores (r = 0.358 and 0.244, P = 0.000 and 0.001, respectively) and negatively correlated with FSFI scores (r = -0.433, P = 0.000). Body image and depressive mood had partial mediating effects, accounting for 39.90% of the total effect.

CONCLUSION

Depression and body image play mediating roles between menopausal symptoms and sexual function in perimenopausal women.

Exploration of related factors of suicide ideation in hospitalized older adults

BACKGROUND

With the rapid aging of the population structure, and the suicide ideation rate also increasing year by year, the ratio of people over 65 to the total number of deaths is increasing yearly. The study provides a reference for researchers interested in older adults' care to explore SI further affecting older adults in the future and provide a reference for qualitative research methods or interventional measures.

OBJECTIVE

The objective of this study is to explore the influence of mental health status, life satisfaction, and depression status on suicidal ideation (SI) among hospitalized older adults.

METHODS

In a cross-sectional correlation study, taking inpatients over 65 years old in a regional teaching hospital in eastern Taiwan, and the BSRS-5 ≧ 5 points of the screening cases, a total of 228 older adults agree to conduct data analysis in this study. Mainly explore the influence of personal characteristics, mental health status, life satisfaction, and depressed mood on SI among the hospitalized older adults. The basic attributes of the cases used in the data, mental health status, cognitive function, quality of life, depression, and suicide ideation, the data obtained were statistically analyzed with SPSS 20/Windows, and the descriptive statistics were average, standard deviation, percentage, median, etc. In the part of inference statistics, independent sample t-test, single-factor analysis of variance, Pearson performance difference correlation, and logistic regression analysis were used to detect important predictors of SI.

RESULTS

Research results in (1) 89.5% of hospitalized older adults have a tendency to depression. 2.26.3% of the older adults had SI. (2) Here are significant differences in the scores of SI among hospitalized older adults in different economic status groups and marital status groups. (3) The age, marital status, and quality of life of the hospitalized older adults were negatively correlated with SI; economic status, self-conscious health, mental health, and depression were positively correlated with SI. (4) The results of the mental health status and SI is (r = .345, p < .001), higher the score on the BSRS-5 scale, the higher the SI. The correlation between the depression scale score (SDS-SF) and SI was (r = .150, p < .05), the higher the depression scale score, the higher the SI.

CONCLUSION

The results of the study found that there was a statistically significant correlation between SI in older adults and age, marital status, economic status, mental health, quality of life, and depression, and also showed that they might interact with each other; the older adults in BSRS-5, GDS-SF, quality of life scale scores have statistically significant differences as essential predictors of SI. The results of this study suggest that medical staff can use the BSRS-5 scale to quickly screen and evaluate the mental health status of older adults, hoping to detect early and provide preventive measures, thereby improving the quality of life of older adults.

Randomized controlled trial investigating potential effects of relaxation on mitochondrial function in immune cells: A pilot experiment

This study aimed to investigate the effect of a relaxation response induced by hypnosis on the mitochondrial energy production of immune cells compared to an everyday relaxing situation. Chronically stressed individuals (88% women) with at least moderate suggestibility were randomized to a hypnosis (20 min relaxation hypnosis; n = 20) or a control condition (20 min documentary; n = 22). Before and after intervention, peripheral blood was collected. The primary outcomes were mitochondrial respiration and density in immune cells measured by high-resolution respirometry and citrate synthase activity assays. As secondary outcome, perceived stress, anxiety, and depressive mood were assessed. The intervention led to no significant Group × Time effects on mitochondrial bioenergetic parameters but a significant Time effect (ηp2 = .09 -.10). Thus, there were no differences in the experimental conditions concerning the measured parameters of mitochondrial bioenergetics. Exploratory subanalyses indicated that stress, anxiety, and depressive mood were linked to lower mitochondrial respiration. Individuals with higher anxiety had less decrease in routine respiration over time than those with lower anxiety (ηp2 = .09). This study explores the effects of relaxation in the form of hypnosis compared to watching a video on the energy metabolism of immune cells. Relaxation, whether in targeted (hypnosis) or untargeted (documentary) form, affected mitochondrial respiration. Further research should focus on the long-term effects of relaxation on bioenergetics. Association between neck circumference and depressive mood among Korean adults

The relationship between central obesity and depression remains of debate. From the 2019 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, data of 3768 adults with available information on neck circumference and depressive mood were analyzed. Multivariate logistic analysis revealed that a small neck circumference was significantly associated with depressive mood among men, but not among women. Our findings indicate that assessing neck circumference among men would help detect depression early.

Examining factors affecting self-care-self-regulation among registered nurses using path analysis

BACKGROUND

Practicing self-care is a requisite for nurses as they face the extreme physical, mental, and emotional challenges presented by the pandemic era. This study aimed to examine factors that contribute to self-care-self-regulation (SCSR) and investigate the mediation effect of psychological and physical health in the relationship between work stress and SCSR among registered nurses in the United States.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

This cross-sectional study was conducted on the data collected from 386 registered nurses who completed an online survey over a 3-week period during the COVID-19 pandemic (April 19 to May 6, 2020). The survey assessed demographic and work-related characteristics, work stress, depressive mood, self-rated health, and SCSR. The model was tested with depressive mood as the first mediator and self-rated health as the second mediator. The potential serial mediation effect was analyzed using PROCESS macros adjusting for covariates.

RESULTS

The sequential indirect effect of work stress on SCSR through depressive mood and self-rated health in series was significant, while its direct effect was not.

CONCLUSION

The findings of the path analysis demonstrate that psychological and physical health status is important to promote self-care behaviors when nurses experience high work stress.

Reduced numbers of naïve CD4 + T cells and an altered CD4/CD8 balance in depressed common variable immune deficiency (CVID) patients. Is thymosin-α1 a possible treatment?

In the 1990's the macrophage-T-cell-theory of depression was posed stating that low grade inflammation and an abnormal T cell system destabilize the development and function of the emotional brain in such a way, that individuals become ultrasensitive to stress. Recently we gathered evidence that indeed higher frequencies of CD4+ memory T cells, lower frequencies of naive CD4 + T cells, higher frequencies of CD8 + T cells (the latter two in part elicited by Cytomegalovirus, CMV, infection) are a characteristic of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). In MDD patients with a history of childhood trauma and severe depression monocytes are inflammatory activated. Low grade inflammation and T cell system defects have also been reported in patients with Common Variable Immune Deficiency (CVID) (next to antibody production defects). CVID patients show a higher prevalence of mild depression. The aim of this study was to determine T cell frequencies and monocyte inflammatory activation in CVID patients with and without depression. This study confirms that CVID patients have CMV independent decreases in the frequency of naïve CD4 + T cells and it de novo shows a CMV dependent increase in the expression of inflammatory genes in monocytes. CVID patients with depression are additionally characterized by a CMV independent increase in the frequency of naïve CD8 + T cells, while lacking monocyte inflammatory activation. In conclusion, depressed CVID patients have T cell abnormalities comparable to that of patients with regular MDD. These abnormalities are presently targeted by thymosin α1 in an open-label proof of concept trial.

The effect of exogenous estrogen on depressive mood in women: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

Sex differences exist in the prevalence of major depressive disorder (MDD). Comparing with males, females are at a higher risk of depression, especially in some reproductive statuses with significant changes in sex hormones. Based on the positive effect on menopausal symptoms in human and on depression-like behaviors in animals, exogenous estrogen was considered as a potential therapeutic approach to the treatment of female depression, however, with inconsistent conclusions in previous studies. In the present systematic review and meta-analysis, 14 eligible randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were included to investigate the effect of exogenous estrogen on depressive mood in women. The results indicated that exogenous estrogens were superior to the control group either alone or in combination with progesterone or antidepressants. Female individuals in perimenopause are more sensitive to estrogen than those in other reproductive statuses, which might be the reason that depressive mood during this stage is more associated with estrogen fluctuations, and exogenous estrogen supplementation can moderate these drastic changes. The finding of meta-regressions that the effect of exogenous estrogen was associated with age in perimenopause and post-menopause rather than the dose or administration of exogenous estrogen, showed again that a stable level of estrogen is more beneficial than a high serum level. This study provides strong evidence of the important role of estrogen fluctuations but not estrogen levels in female depression.

Associations between binge drinking experience, depressive mood, and suicidality in adolescents: Based on the 2021 Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey

BACKGROUND

This study aimed to investigate the associations between binge drinking experience (BDE), depressive mood, and suicidality among Korean adolescents.

METHODS

We analyzed the 17th population-based and cross-sectional data from the Korean Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey. Multiple logistic regression analysis was performed to compare BDE, depressive mood, and suicidality by sex.

RESULTS

In 54,848 adolescents, the prevalence of BDE was 5.3 % in boys and 4.4 % in girls. The prevalence of suicidal ideation, plans, and attempts among girls was 7.8 %, 2.4 %, and 1.4 %, respectively. The prevalence of suicide attempts among girls with both BDE and depressive moods was higher than that among boys. Boys with both BDE and depressive mood had 12.60 times and 14.50 times higher adjusted odds ratio (aOR) of suicide ideation and plan, respectively, compared with the non-drinking/non-depressed group. Girls with both BDE and depressive mood had 22.06 times higher aOR of suicide attempts than the non-drinking/non-depressed group.

LIMITATIONS

The study has few limitations including the use of self-report questionnaires, participants' response bias, and lack of diagnosis by mental health professionals.

CONCLUSIONS

These findings represent the prevalence of suicidality among South Korean adolescents with BDE or depressive mood. Since adolescents with both BDE and depressive mood showed particularly high suicidality, it is necessary to establish mental health services, such as proper prevention strategies and targeted interventions.

Vitamin D, testosterone and depression in middle-aged and elderly men: a systematic review

Depression is one of the common psychiatric disorders during elderly. This systematic review aims to present the relationship between vitamin D deficiency, depression and testosterone serum concentration in the middle-aged and elderly men. We performed a comprehensive search in the Google Scholar, PubMed, ProQuest, Web of Science, Cochrane, Science Direct, and Scopus databases to collect any relevant published studies. The data of the articles that had been investigated the relationship between depression and 25-hydroxy vitamin D (25[OH]D) serum concentration (nine studies), or testosterone and 25[OH]D (six studies), as the primary outcomes, were included in our review. The results of the cohort and cross-sectional studies have shown that vitamin-D deficiency is associated with the incidence of depression in older men. In addition, documents have reported the positive association between vitamin D and testosterone, and previous studies have shown that testosterone can involve in the mood. We have proposed scientific mechanisms that have shown vitamin D may also play a protective role in depression through its effect on the testosterone. Therefore, it is a low risk and safe recommendation for the middle-aged and elderly men to use the vitamin D supplement or exposure to the sunlight to prevent depression.

The Association Between Employment Status and Mental Health in Young Adults: A Nationwide Population-Based Study in Korea

BACKGROUND

There has been limited evidence on the association between employment status and mental health among young adults. Therefore, this study investigated the association between employment status and mental health in Korean young adults.

METHODS

Data from 15,649 adults aged 19-39 years who participated in the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2007-2013, 2015, and 2017) were analyzed. Employment status was categorized by those who worked in paid jobs or those who did unpaid work for relatives. Mental health problems included depressive mood and suicide ideation. We performed a multiple logistic regression analysis.

RESULTS

Of the participants, 33.5% were unemployed. The odds ratio (OR) of depressive mood (1.28, 95% CI: 1.06-1.55) was higher in unemployed 20-year-olds than employed ones and ORs of suicide ideation were higher among unemployed males (1.59, 1.16-2.20) and 30-year-olds (1.38, 1.13-1.70) than employed ones, respectively. Further, compared to employed males, the ORs of depressive mood (3.10, 2.54-3.77) and suicide ideation (4.44, 3.57-5.53) were the highest among unemployed females.

LIMITATIONS

This study could not explain the causal relationship between employment status and mental health because it was a cross-sectional study. We did not include the relationship between mental health and employment status before the last week.

CONCLUSIONS

Among young adults, unemployed status was significantly associated with an increased risk of mental health problems such as depressive mood and suicide ideation. Multifaceted efforts are required to reduce these mental health issues among unemployed young adults.

The association between effort-reward imbalance, work-life balance and depressive mood in Korean wage workers: The 4th Korean Working Conditions Survey

Background

This study was conducted to determine the association between work-life (WL) balance, effort-reward (ER) imbalance, and depressive mood in Korean wage workers when 2 models were considered simultaneously.

Methods

We analyzed 26,014 Korean workers including 13,471 men and 12,543 women from the 4th Korean Working Conditions Survey data. Multiple logistic regression was used to analyze the association between WL, ER status, and the depressive mood of Korean workers. We classified the subjects into a total of 4 groups as follows. Group 1: WL and ER status are both “balanced”, group 2: WL status is “imbalanced” and ER status is “balanced”, group 3: WL status is “balanced” and the ER status is “imbalanced”, group 4: WL and ER status are both “imbalanced.”

Results

We found significantly increased odds ratios (ORs) for depressive mood in groups 2, 3, and 4 compared with group 1 after adjusting for the general and occupational characteristics of the subjects in both men and women. We also found that the trend of ORs increased gradually from groups 2 to 4 compared with group 1 in both men and women; group 2: OR: 1.23 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.12–1.35), group 3: OR: 1.40 (95% CI: 1.27–1.55), group 4: OR: 1.99 (95% CI: 1.74–2.28) compared with group 1 in men; group 2: OR: 1.28 (95% CI: 1.15–1.42), group 3: OR: 1.45 (95% CI: 1.31–1.59), group 4: OR: 2.04 (95% CI: 1.76–2.36) compared with group 1 in women.

Conclusions

As a result, we found the association between imbalanced WL, ER status, and depressive mood in Korean workers using 2 models simultaneously. It is important to provide a balanced WL and ER condition to improve the mental health of workers.

Assessment of life factors affecting the experience of depressive symptoms in adolescents: a secondary analysis using the Korea Youth Risk Behavior Survey

BACKGROUND

Adolescents may experience several changes in their lifestyle, such as social activity and school life, which makes them vulnerable to developing a depressive disorder. Therefore, the present study aimed to identify the factors affecting the experience of depressive symptoms during adolescence.

METHODS

We conducted a secondary analysis using the 2019 Korean Youth Risk Behavior Web-based survey data, including a total of 57,303 middle and high school students selected from among 400 schools. Factors such as dietary habits, physical activity levels, time spent studying, duration of internet use, and other health risk behaviors were included in the analysis. Logistic regression analysis was performed to identify factors that predict the risk of experiencing depressive symptoms.

RESULTS

The perceived stress of Korean adolescents showed a tendency to increase with age, and high school seniors and girls were more likely to report depressive symptoms. Perceived health status, academic performance, time spent studying, physical activity, duration of internet use, and effort to control weight were associated with individual experiences of depressive symptoms.

CONCLUSION

We identified factors that influence the experience of depressive symptoms in adolescents. Our results suggest the possibility that the purpose of students' physical activities and their leisure activity preferences may be related to their emotional status. We suggest that activities that are appropriate to the culture and lifestyle of adolescents should be recommended to reduce the occurrence of depressive symptoms.

Association between household overcrowding and depressive mood among Chinese residents

BACKGROUND

Recent household overcrowding has strongly affected households' mental health in China. The possible association of household overcrowding and depressive mood is not fully demonstrated in unique Chinese economic context.

OBJECTIVES

The aim of this study was to examine the association of household overcrowding and depressive mood among Chinese adults and to evaluate whether the association varies across socio-demographic characteristics.

METHODS

The relationship between household overcrowding and individual's depressive mood was examined using ordered logistic regression models. Stratified analysis was used to evaluate whether the association varies across socio-demographic characteristics.

RESULTS

Ordered logistic regression models showed that the odds ratio for depressive mood among residents enduring housing overcrowding, as compared with residents without household overcrowding were 1.12 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.02-1.22), after controlling for important confounders. We secondarily examined the association across subgroups. Stratified analysis revealed that household overcrowding significantly affected depressive mood for the low household income subgroups, whereas has no significant effect on depressive mood for the high household income.

LIMITATIONS

CFPS does not investigate the depression of people under 16, making it impossible for us to study the impacts of housing crowding on Chinese children's depression. Secondly, we did not adjust for other potential confounders, such as lifetime history of depression or depressive mood, medication use and anxiety disorders/symptoms.

CONCLUSIONS

This finding indicates that household overcrowding is harmful to residents' mental health, and appropriate protective measures should be taken to reduce the adverse effects of household overcrowding on residents' mental health.

Association between household debt and depressive mood among Chinese residents

OBJECTIVES

The aim of this study was to examine the association of household debt and depressive mood among Chinese adults and to evaluate whether the association varies across types of debt.

STUDY DESIGN

This is a secondary data analysis of a nationally representative survey.

METHODS

A prospective cohort study of participants was drawn from the China Family Panel Studies (CFPS). In total, 5135 participants had their depressive mood measured in the CFPS starting from 2014 to 2016 and had participated in the biennial survey. We used logistic regression models to identify predictors of depressive mood with debts, sociodemographic factors, health status factors and health behaviors factors. Adjusted for all measured covariates, we conducted an independent analysis for the experience of housing loans from formal institutions (HLFI), other loans from formal institutions (OLFI), housing loans from relatives and friends (HLRF) and other loans from relatives and friends (OLRF).

RESULTS

Multiple logistic regression analyses revealed that household debt was a significant risk factor for depressive mood (1.35; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.19-1.54), after controlling for potential confounders. Independent analysis revealed that HLFI was not a significant predictor, while HLRF (1.26; 95% CI, 1.08-1.48), OLFI (1.45; 95% CI, 1.13-1.87) and OLRF (1.23; 95% CI, 1.02-1.47) remained significant risk factors.

CONCLUSION

OLFI, HLRF and OLRF were associated with depressive mood, while HLFI was not. To address the problem of individual depressive mood, its apparent association with household debt should be paid more attention.

The effects of social comparison and depressive mood on adolescent social decision-making

BACKGROUND

Based on social comparison theory, two experiments were conducted to explore the effects of depression and social comparison on adolescents, using the ultimatum game (UG).

METHODS

Before the formal experiment began, a preliminary experiment tested the effectiveness of social comparison settings. This study used the UG paradigm to explore adolescents' social decision-making in the context of gain and loss through two experiments. These experiments were designed as a 2 (group: depressive mood group, normal mood group) × 2 (social comparison: upward, downward) × 3 (fairness level: fair 5:5, unfair 3:7, extremely unfair 1:9) three-factor hybrid study.

RESULTS

(1) The fairer the proposal was, the higher the sense of fairness participants felt, and the higher their acceptance rate. (2) The acceptance rate of the participants for downward social comparison was significantly higher than that for upward social comparison, but there was no difference in fairness perception between the two social comparisons. (3) Under the context of gain, the acceptance rate of the depressive mood group was higher than that of the normal mood group, but there was no difference in the acceptance rate between the depressive mood group and the normal mood group under the loss context. Depressive mood participants had more feelings of unfairness in the contexts of both gain and loss. (4) The effects of depressive mood, social comparison and the fairness level of distribution on social decision-making interact.

CONCLUSIONS

The interaction of social comparison, depressive mood and proposal type demonstrates that besides one's emotion, cognitive biases and social factors can also have an effect on social decision-making. These findings indicate that behavioral decision boosting may provide an avenue for appropriate interventions in helping to guide adolescents to make social decisions.

Emotional Changes and Protective Factors of Emotional Workers in the Public and Private Sector

OBJECTIVE

Emotional labor is known to be a risk factor for emotional distress. This study aimed to evaluate specific stressors according to the type of occupation and identify protective and adverse factors.

METHODS

We recruited 349 workers engaged in emotional labor in a suburban city. They were assessed using scales regarding emotional status, job stress, resilience, and job satisfaction. Correlation and regression analyses were performed to evaluate their emotional state according to their stress level. A mediation model using structural equation modeling was utilized to identify the mediating effects of resilience and workplace satisfaction.

RESULTS

The correlation analysis indicated that the level of workplace stress was statistically correlated with depressed mood and anxiety and showed a significant inverse correlation with individuals' resilience and job satisfaction. According to the regression analysis, in private institution workers, "emotional disharmony and hurt" had a statistically significant negative effect on their emotional state, and in public institution workers, "emotional demands and regulation" were prominent. Resilience partially mediated the relationship between emotional stress and anxiety/depressive symptoms.

CONCLUSION

Our findings indicate that the causes of stress differed according to the working environment. Preventive strategies such as resilience training and relieving stress on individual factors are needed to promote mental health.

Psychosocial Factors and Personality Traits and the Prevalence of Arterial Hypertension Among 35- and 55-Year-Old Men and Women in Sweden and Estonia: a SWESTONIA Longitudinal Study

INTRODUCTION

Psychosocial factors influence the risk of developing hypertension. Personality traits have a modulating effect against the harmful influences of psychosocial factors.

AIM

Through a longitudinal clinical study consisting of men and women aged 35 and 55 at the baseline in Estonia and Sweden, to assess the influence of psychosocial factors and personality traits resulting in arterial hypertension.

METHODS

Data analysis based on the cross-sectional study with 2 assessments over 13 years of a sample comprising 158 individuals from Estonia and 213 individuals from Sweden. The Pearlin Mastery Scale, Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale, Depression Model and Gothenburg Quality of Life Instrument were used.

RESULTS

Throughout the follow-up period, a higher depressive mood and lower self-assessed quality of life score prevailed among the 35-year-old and 55-year-old Estonians compared with the Swedish study participants (p < 0.001). Among the 55-year-old Estonian study participants with diagnosed hypertension, but not among the Swedish, negative stressful life events had a significantly stronger effect (p < 0.001) on the risk of developing hypertension. In addition, lower mastery (p < 0.05) dominated among study participants diagnosed with hypertension.

CONCLUSIONS

The combined effects of psychosocial factors and personality traits are important variables in predicting the risk of developing arterial hypertension. The study results are relevant to clinical practice and provide suggestions for employing successful preventive measures.

The association between quality of direct supervisor's behavior and depressive mood in Korean wage workers: the 4th Korean Working Conditions Survey

Background

Workers spend most of their social lives at work and have relationships of varying nature with people in the workplace. Direct supervisors, in particular, have a direct and lasting impact on workers, which may influence workers' mental health. Depression is very prevalent worldwide, and social concern about the disease is on the rise. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of direct supervisors' behavior on the depressive mood of Korean wage workers.

Methods

We used data from the 4th Korean Working Conditions Survey held in 2014; 22,212 participants were included in the analysis. The quality of a direct supervisor's behavior was categorized from 0 (= lowest) to 5 (= highest) points. The degree of depressive mood was measured on a scale from “normal mood” to “likely depression” based on the 5-item World Health Organization Well-Being Index (WHO-5) questionnaire. Multiple logistic regression was used to analyze the association between the quality of the direct supervisor's behavior and the depressive mood of wage workers.

Results

After multivariable adjustment, significantly increased odds ratio (OR) for likely depression was found in the 4, 3, 2, 1, and 0 points of the quality of the direct supervisor's behavior compared to 5 points. After stratification for the level of satisfaction with working conditions, the OR of the unsatisfied groups was higher than that of the satisfied groups.

Conclusions

Likely depression was found to be significantly associated with a low quality of direct supervisor's behavior. This association was stronger in workers who were not satisfied with their working conditions. This study suggests that proper management of the direct supervisor's behavior is needed to reduce the risk of depression among Korean wage workers.

Preoperative Depressive Mood of Patients With Esophageal Cancer Might Delay Recovery From Operation-Related Malnutrition

Background

We investigated the relationship between the preoperative psychological state and the perioperative nutritional conditions of patients with esophageal cancer.

Methods

Seventy-three participants underwent operations for esophageal cancer in our hospital. Depressive state was evaluated using the Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS). General quality of life (QOL) was assessed using the SF-8™, and the nutritional assessments were evaluated through anthropometric analysis, bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) and some biochemical assessments.

Results

In the preoperative stage, patients with higher SDS scores, representing a more depressive state, had low arm circumference, grip strength, serum albumin levels and prognostic nutritional index. Patients with higher SDS scores also had a tendency for a lower physical component summary, representing physical QOL by the Eight-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-8™). At 3 months after surgery, patients with higher preoperative SDS scores had significantly lower body mass indexes (BMIs) and had a lower tendency of body fat masses. In the univariate and multivariate analyses on the recovery of BMI at 3 months after surgery, preoperative SDS score was the only independent risk factor (odd ratio (OR): 4.07, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.15 - 14.35) in this study.

Conclusion

Preoperative depressive mood, as evaluated by the SDS, was the sole relevant factor for postoperative body weight recovery of patients with esophageal cancer. Preoperative depressive mood of patients with esophageal cancer might delay recovery from operation-related malnutrition. Some measures against preoperative depressive mood might be necessary for early recovery from postoperative malnutrition in patients with esophageal cancer.

Associations of mental health and sleep duration with menstrual cycle irregularity: a population-based study

This study aimed to examine whether the characteristics of mental health and sleep duration, alone or in combination, are associated with menstrual cycle irregularity. This population-based, cross-sectional study analyzed the data from 4445 women aged 19-49 years, who participated in the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2010-2012. A structured questionnaire was used to assess mental health characteristics, sleep duration, and menstrual cycle irregularity. A multivariable logistic regression analysis was performed. High stress, depressive mood, and suicidal ideation were associated with increased risk of menstrual cycle irregularity after adjusting for confounding variables (odds ratio [95% confidence interval] = 1.33 [1.07-1.65], 1.56 [1.17-2.07], and 1.37 [1.01-1.87], respectively). Short sleep duration (≤ 5 h a day) was significantly associated with higher odds of severe menstrual cycle irregularity with menstrual interval of greater than 3 months (2.67 [1.35-5.27]). Participants with sleep duration of ≤ 5 h a day with psychological stress, depressive mood, or suicidal ideation had higher odds of menstrual cycle irregularity (1.96 [1.26-3.05], 2.86 [1.50-5.44], and 2.25 [1.18-4.29]). This study suggests positive associations of mental health problems and short sleep duration with menstrual cycle irregularity among Korean female adults. Therefore, strategies to deal with psychological stress, depressive mood, and sleep duration are needed for improving the reproductive health of women suffering from menstrual disturbances.

Altered amygdala-related structural covariance and resting-state functional connectivity in end-stage renal disease patients

Depression and cognitive control deficits were frequently reported in concurrent end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients. Neuroimaging studies indicated depression could be a risk factor for cognitive control deficits, and amygdala-related circuitry may play a critical role in this abnormal interaction. To investigate the potential relationship between depressive symptoms and cognitive control reduction in ESRD patients, T1-weighted and resting fMRI images were obtained in 29 ESRD patients and 29 healthy controls. Voxel-based morphometry (VBM), structural covariance (SC) analysis based on grey matter volume (GMV), and functional connectivity (FC) analysis were adopted. All subjects performed the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) assessment and Stroop test. The patients also underwent blood biochemistry tests (urea, creatinine, phosphate, Ca2⁺, hematocrit, cystatin, hemoglobin). Compared with controls, GMV reductions were found mainly in the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) and bilateral amygdala, and decreased SC was found between the amygdala and ACC in ESRD patients. This indicated that structural changes in the amygdala may be related to the GMV alterations in the ACC. Additionally, decreased FC between the amygdala and ACC was revealed in ESRD patients. Negative correlation was found between the FC of the amygdala-ACC and reaction delay during the Stroop test, but this correlation disappeared after controlling BDI. Stepwise regression analysis showed that the low level of hemoglobin was contributed to the reduced FC of the amygdala-ACC in ESRD patients. Our results demonstrated the abnormal interaction between depressive mood and cognitive control deficits in ESRD patients.

Self-perceived ability to cope with stress and depressive mood without smoking predicts successful smoking cessation 12 months later in a quitline setting: a secondary analysis of a randomized trial

Background

Telephone-based smoking cessation services (‘quitlines’) are both effective and cost-effective. Knowledge of modifiable baseline factors in real-life settings with heterogeneous participants is essential for the development and improvement of treatment protocols to assist in telephone-based smoking cessation. The aim was to assess if self-perceived abilities to cope measured at baseline, would predict abstinence at the 12-month follow-up at the Swedish National Tobacco Quitline (SNTQ).

Methods

The data were retrieved from a previous randomized controlled trial comparing the effectiveness of proactive and reactive service at the SNTQ. Included were 612 clients calling the SNTQ between February 2009 and September 2010. Outcome measures were self-reported point prevalence and 6-month continuous abstinence at the 12-month follow-up. Plausible predictors of smoking cessation were assessed at the first call and in a baseline questionnaire. Self-perceived abilities at baseline were measured by two questions: (1) How likely is it that you will be smoke-free in one year? and (2) How likely are you to be able to handle stress and depressive mood without smoking? The associations between potential predictors and outcome (smoke-free at 12-month follow-up) were assessed by logistic regression analysis.

Results

Of the two potential predictors for abstinence at 12-month follow-up, only the perceived ability to handle stress and depressive mood without smoking remained significant in the adjusted analyses (Odds Ratio, OR 1.13, 95% CI 1.00–1.27 for point prevalence and OR 1.16, 95% CI 1.01–1.33 for 6-month continuous abstinence according to intention-to-treat). The overall strongest predictor in the adjusted analyses was smoking status in the week before baseline (OR 3.30, 95% CI 1.79–6.09 for point prevalence and OR 3.97, 95% CI 2.01–7.83 for 6-month continuous abstinence).

Conclusions

The perceived ability to handle stress and depressive mood without smoking at baseline predicted the subjects’ abstinence at the 12-month follow-up. An assessment of/adjustment for stress and depressive mood coping skills may be appropriate in future smoking cessation treatment and research. The treatment protocol can be tailored to individual differences and needs for optimal support.

Psychosocial factors affecting resilience in Nepalese individuals with earthquake-related spinal cord injury: a cross-sectional study

BACKGROUND

One of many types of injuries following an earthquake is spinal cord injury (SCI) which is a life-long medically complex injury and high-cost health problem. Despite several negative consequences, some persons with SCI are resilient enough to achieve positive adjustment, greater acceptance, and better quality of life. Since resilience is influenced by several factors and can vary by context, it is beneficial to explore factors that affect the resilience of people who sustained spinal cord injury from the 2015 earthquake in Nepal.

METHODS

A descriptive cross-sectional study included 82 participants from the Spinal Injury Rehabilitation Center and communities in Nepal. Participants completed the Demographic and Injury-related Questionnaire, Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale, Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support, Moorong Self-efficacy Scale, Intrinsic Spirituality Scale, and Patient Health Questionnaire-9. Pearson's correlation and point biserial correlation analyses were performed to examine associations between resilience and independent variables. A hierarchical regression analysis was used to identify the influence of certain factors.

RESULTS

Findings indicated significant associations between resilience and social support (r = 0.42, p < 0.001), self-efficacy (r = 0.53, p < 0.001), depressive mood (r = - 0.50, p < 0.001) and demographic variables which included sex (r = 0.47, p < 0.001), employment (r = 0.27, p = 0.016), and current living location (r = 0.24, p = 0.029). There was a non-significant association between resilience and spirituality (r = - 0.12, p > 0.05). In hierarchical regression analysis, an overall regression model explained 46% of the variance in resilience. Self-efficacy (β = 0.28, p = 0.007) and depressive mood (β = - 0.24, p = 0.016) significantly determined resilience after controlling the effect of demographic variables. Among the demographic factors, being male significantly explained the variance in resilience (β = 0.31, p = 0.001).

CONCLUSIONS

Multiple psychosocial and demographic factors were associated with resilience in people who sustained an earthquake-related SCI. Mental health professionals should demonstrate concern and consider such factors in allocating care in this group. Development of intervention research concerning resilience is recommended to strengthen resilience in order to improve rehabilitation outcomes and enhance reintegration of individuals with SCI into their communities.

Evaluation of depressive mood and cognitive functions in patients with acromegaly under somatostatin analogue therapy

AIMS

Acromegaly is caused by a pituitary adenoma that releases excess growth hormone (GH) and a concomitant increase in insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1). Acromegaly results not only in phenotypic changes, but also in neurologic complications as peripheral neuropathy and cognitive dysfunction. This study aimed to compare depressive mood and cognitive function in patients with acromegaly and in healthy controls as well as to determine the factors underlying cognitive dysfunction in the acromegalic patients.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

This study included 42 patients with acromegaly that were receiving somatostatin analogue therapy and 44 healthy controls. Memory, attention, visuospatial function, inhibitory function, abstract thinking, verbal fluency, and depressive mood were measured in the patients and controls.

RESULTS

Patients with acromegaly had lower learning (p = 0.01), planning (p = 0.03), complex attention and inhibitory function (p = 0.04) scores than the controls. There was no significant difference in depressive mood between the patients and controls (p > 0.05). Gamma knife radiosurgery did not negatively affect cognitive function (p > 0.05).

CONCLUSION

The present findings show that acromegaly negatively affects learning, attention, and planning.

Precarious employment associated with depressive symptoms and suicidal ideation in adult wage workers

BACKGROUND

Precarious employment is one of the most important indicators of social disadvantage and is associated with poor mental health. This study aimed to investigate the association of precarious employment with depressive mood and suicidal ideation in adult wage workers, and the possible mediating or moderating effect of socioeconomic factors in the association between precarious work and mental health status.

METHOD

Data from the Fifth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES V) conducted between 2010 and 2012 were analyzed. Among the 24,173 participants, 6266 adult wage workers (3206 precarious and 3060 non-precarious workers) aged ≥19 years were included. Socioeconomic and health-related characteristics as well as depressive mood and suicidal ideation were investigated.

RESULTS

Precarious employment was significantly associated with depressive mood in the logistic regression analyses adjusting for all potential confounding factors as covariates. The socioeconomic variables including age, gender, education level, marital status, household income, and occupation type were significantly related with depressive mood and suicidal ideation in adult wage workers. We also found that gender and household income had possible moderating effects on the association between precarious employment and suicidal ideation. Precarious work was associated with suicidal ideation only for male workers and worker with low or middle-lower income levels.

LIMITATIONS

Our study is based on a cross-sectional design, thus, we could not elucidate the causal relationship between the variables.

CONCLUSIONS

Our study suggested that precarious employment plays a pivotal role in the mental health status of adult wage workers.

Association between chronic conditions and health-related quality of life: differences by level of urbanization in Peru

Purpose

To evaluate the role of urbanization as an effect modifier for the association between specific chronic conditions and number of conditions with health-related quality of life (QOL).

Methods

We analyzed cross-sectional data from the CRONICAS Cohort Study conducted in Lima (highly urbanized), Tumbes (semi-urban), as well as rural and urban sites in Puno. Exposures of interest were chronic bronchitis, depressive mood, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and a composite variable aggregating the number of chronic conditions (the four exposures plus heart disease and stroke). QOL outcomes were assessed with EuroQol’s EQ-5D visual analogue scale (EQ-VAS). We fitted linear regressions with robust variance to evaluate the associations of interest. Study site was assessed as a potential effect modifier using the likelihood-ratio (LR) test.

Results

We evaluated data on 2433 subjects: 51.3% were female, mean age was 57.2 years. Study site was found to be an effect modifier only for the association between depressive mood and EQ-VAS score (LR test p < 0.001). Compared to those without depressive mood, participants with depressive mood scored −13.7 points on the EQ-VAS in Lima, −7.9 in urban Puno, −11.0 in semi-urban Tumbes, and −2.7 in rural Puno. Study site was not found to be an effect modifier for the association between the number of chronic conditions and EQ-VAS (LR test p = 0.64).

Conclusion

The impact of depressive mood on EQ-VAS was larger in urban than in rural sites, while site was not an effect modifier for the remaining associations.

Effects of perceived job insecurity on depression, suicide ideation, and decline in self-rated health in Korea: a population-based panel study

PURPOSE

To investigate the effects of job security on new development of depressive episode, suicide ideation, and decline in self-rated health.

METHODS

Data from the Korea Welfare Panel Study from 2012 to 2015 were analysed. A total of 2912 waged workers self-assessed their depressive episode, suicide ideation, and health annually by answering the questionnaire. Participants were divided into three groups according to the level of job security: high, intermediate and low. To evaluate the influence of job security, we performed survival analysis after stratification by gender with adjustment for covariates. The result was further stratified by whether the respondent was the head of household.

RESULTS

After adjusting for covariates, men in low job security group showed significantly higher hazard ratios (HRs) for depression (HR 1.27, 95% CI 1.01-1.60), suicide ideation (HR 3.25, 95% CI 1.72-6.16), and decline in self-rated health (HR 1.73, 95% CI 1.16-2.59). Women showed significantly higher HR of depression in the intermediate (HR 1.37, 95% CI 1.01-1.87) and low (HR 1.50, 95% CI 1.12-1.99) job security group. Male head of household with low job security showed significantly higher HR of depression, suicide ideation, and decline in self-rated health. Non-head-of-household women with intermediate and low job security showed higher risk of depression than those with high job security.

CONCLUSIONS

We found that perceived job insecurity is associated with the new development of depressive episode, suicide ideation, and decline in self-rated health.

Associations of multicultural status with depressive mood and suicidality among Korean adolescents: the roles of parental country of birth and socioeconomic position

Background

The mental health of the offspring of immigrants is a major public health concern. In this study, we examined associations of multicultural status and parental country of birth with adolescent mental health in South Korea, and assessed the effect of socioeconomic position (SEP) on these associations.

Methods

We used four waves of the Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey (KYRBS) between 2011 and 2014, including 294,324 participants (149,219 boys and 145,105 girls aged 13–18 years) as study subjects. KYRBS is a cross-sectional survey conducted annually by the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The participants in the KYRBS were drawn as stratified multistage clustered samples from Korean middle schools and high schools. We calculated the age-adjusted 12-month prevalence of depressive mood and suicidal behaviors by parental country of birth, and estimated the effects of SEP indicators on the relationship.

Results

The age-standardized prevalence of suicidality (suicide ideation, plans, and attempts) was significantly different between multicultural and non-multicultural boys. The impact of multicultural status on mental health varied with parental foreign-born status and maternal country of birth. Compared with non-multicultural counterparts, boys with Japan-born mothers showed lower prevalence ratios (PRs) of suicidal plans (PR = 0.34, 95% CI 0.16–0.70). Girls with Japan-born mothers also showed lower PRs of depressive mood (PR = 0.77, 95% CI 0.63–0.95) and suicidal ideation (PR = 0.59, 95% CI 0.41–0.83), while adolescents with Korean-Chinese mothers showed similar PRs. Boys with foreign-born fathers as well as boys with two foreign-born parents were at a greater risk of suicidality than non-multicultural boys. The magnitude of the relationship between multicultural status and mental health outcomes was generally attenuated after adjusting for SEP indicators.

Conclusions

In general, adolescents with Japan-born mothers showed lower PRs of depressive mood and suicidality than non-multicultural adolescents, while those with Korean-Chinese mothers showed similar PRs. Boys who had foreign-born fathers generally showed greater PRs of depressive mood and suicidality than non-multicultural boys. To ensure the effective implementation of policies to reduce mental health problems among multicultural adolescents in South Korea, detailed information should be considered regarding the cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds of families, such as parental country of birth and SEP.

The role of anger and depressive mood in transformation process from victimization to perpetration

Violence exerts detrimental influence on children's lives. Reported delinquent behaviors of children have reached an alarming level throughout all societies, and tend to be followed by further victimization. Victimized children suffer various physical and psychological difficulties, with the worst being further involved in perpetrations which puts these children at a greater risk. This study explores the transformation process from victimization to perpetration, by hypothesizing that depressive mood and anger serve as mediators. Data extracted from the Korean Child Youth Panel Survey (KCYPS), of which the first wave (8th graders, n=2283) were used. Apart from depressive mood and anger, we included violent parenting and peer victimization to measure victimization, and for perpetration, conventional and cyber delinquent behaviors were s included in this model. Structural Equation Modeling was employed to test the hypothesis using Mplus, and bootstrapping method was used to test mediators while FIML was used to handle missing responses. The model yielded an appropriate fit including chi-square=391.477 (df=73, p< 0.001), CFI=0.968, TLI=0.954, RMSEA=0.044 (0.040-0.048). Specifically, anger was reported to be mediated in the relations between victimization and perpetration. Depressive mood was mediated in the relations between victimization and perpetration, except for the relation arising from parental victimization. The implications of these findings related to the transformation process and future research direction are discussed.

Stressful life events and leucocyte telomere length: Do lifestyle factors, somatic and mental health, or low grade inflammation mediate this relationship? Results from a cohort of Danish men born in 1953

Exposure to psychosocial stress is associated with increased risk of a number of somatic and mental disorders with relation to immune system functioning. We aimed to explore whether stressful events in early and recent life was associated with leucocyte telomere length (TL), which is assumed to reflect the accumulated burden of inflammation and oxidative stress occurring during the life course. We specifically aimed to address whether childhood constitutes a sensitive period and how much of the relation between stressful life events and TL is mediated through somatic and mental health, lifestyle, and markers of low-grade inflammation. A cohort of Danish men born in 1953 has been followed since birth in the Metropolit Cohort. These men underwent a health examination including blood sampling in 2010 and a subset of 324 also had a quantitative PCR-based measurement of TL. The relation between stressful life events and TL was analysed using structural equation modelling, which also provided an estimate of the proportion of the total effect mediated by somatic and mental health (cardiovascular disease, body mass and depressive mood), lifestyle factors, and low grade inflammation (C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin (IL)-6 and IL-10). Total number of stressful events experienced during the life course was not associated with TL. In terms of sensitive periods, we found that number of stressful events in childhood was associated with shorter TL (β_{per number stressful events in childhood}=-0.02(SE=-0.02); P=0.05). This relation was particularly strong for being placed away from home (β=-0.16; P<0.000). Thirty percent of the total effect of stressful events in childhood on TL was mediated by the included variables, with the largest proportion being mediated through depressive mood (16%) and CRP (9%). This study suggests that stressful events in childhood are associated with shorter TL in middle-aged men and that part of this relation is explained by depressive mood and low grade inflammation.

Psychosocial Factors Related to Underuse of Medical Services

In this longitudinal study, we applied structural equation modeling (SEM) to examine the historical, predisposing, enabling/barrier, and need factors as related to the underuse of medical services during early midlife. We gathered longitudinal data on a prospective cohort of community-dwelling men and women (N = 548) followed from adolescence to early midlife. The findings supported a mediational model: A mutually affectionate parent-child relationship in early adolescence was inversely related to underuse of medical services in early midlife via the mediational roles played by later predisposing factors (i.e., depressive mood and cigarette smoking), need factor (i.e., physical health problems), barriers (i.e., financial difficulty), and enabling factors (i.e., social support for health services in early midlife). In addition, satisfaction with medical services in the neighborhood had an association with less underuse of medical services in early midlife. Family therapy focused on an increase in the affectionate relationship between the adolescents and his/her parents and cognitive-behavioral treatment of depressive mood may lead to a decrease in the underuse of medical services.

A momentary biomarker for depressive mood

Many biomarkers from genetic, neuroimaging, and biological/biochemical measures have been recently developed in order to make a shift toward the objective evaluation of psychiatric disorders. However, they have so far been less successful in capturing dynamical changes or transitions in pathological states, such as those occurring during the course of clinical treatments or pathogenic processes of disorders. A momentary biomarker is now required for objective monitoring of such dynamical changes. The development of ecological momentary assessment (EMA) allows the assessment of dynamical aspects of diurnal/daily clinical conditions and subjective symptoms. Furthermore, a variety of validation studies on momentary symptoms assessed by EMA using behavioral/physiological/biochemical measures have demonstrated the possibility of evaluating momentary symptoms from such external objective measures. In this review, we introduce physical activity as a candidate biobehavioral biomarker for psychiatric disorders. We also mention its potential as a momentary biomarker for depressive mood. Finally, we address the continuous monitoring of the pathogenic processes and pathological states of depressive disorders based on physical activity, as well as its application in pharmacological animal studies.

Different cortical underpinnings for fatigue and depression in MS?

BACKGROUND

Fatigue is a common complaint in MS patients but its origins are still not fully understood. A major difficulty is that fatigue seems strongly correlated with depression.

METHODS

95 MS patients and 15 healthy control subjects were included. The Fatigue Severity Scale and Beck's Depression Inventory were used to assess symptom-severity and to determine group membership for five groups: MS patients with and without fatigue, and with or without depressive mood, healthy controls. Participants were scanned using high-resolution structural 3D T1-weighted imaging. Cortical thickness for 84 areas was calculated using the NeuroQLab software in combination with the atlas for the Automated Anatomical Labeling software. A stepwise forward regression analysis was performed to predict group membership of the MS patients by thickness of cortical areas. We also performed a series of post-hoc ANOVAs to explore differences between the four patients groups and the healthy controls.

RESULTS

About 20% of the patients suffered only from fatigue or only from depressive mood. Regression analysis explained 17.3% of the variance and thickness of the right inferior parietal cortex, middle temporal pole and parahippocampus contributed significantly to the model. Patients with pure fatigue showed a specific decrease in cortical thickness in the inferior parietal lobe, patients with both depressive mood and fatigue in the right middle temporal pole. Additional ANOVAs revealed cortical thinning in the right middle cingulate cortex in the group with pure fatigue as well as the groups with depression.

CONCLUSION

Fatigue and depression can be dissociated in larger MS-patient groups using questionnaires and cortical thickness measures, but the cortical thickness measures only explain a small portion of variance of these neuropsychiatric symptoms.

Stress-induced cortisol is associated with generation of non-negative interpretations during cognitive reappraisal

Background

Enhanced processing of emotional stimuli after stress exposure is reported to be associated with stress-induced cortisol. Because enhanced emotional information processing could make cognitive emotion regulation more difficult, it was hypothesized that stress-induced cortisol would be associated with non-negative interpretation generation associated with the cognitive reappraisal processes.

Methods

A total of 36 participants (Mean age = 21.3 years, SD = 1.8) watched video clips of depression-related stressful situations before and after the administration of a stress induction task. They were then asked to generate as many non-negative interpretations as possible to reduce the depressive mood. Saliva samples were obtained before and after the stress induction task to measure change in the cortisol level.

Results

Participants were allocated post-hoc to either a responder (n = 19) or non-responder group (n = 17) based on the cortisol response to the stress induction task. The number of non-negative interpretations generated following the stress induction task was reduced only in the cortisol responders. The number of post-stress non-negative interpretations was fewer in the responder group when compared by sex, baseline cortisol level, and the number of pre-stress non-negative interpretations, statistically controlled.

Conclusions

Although baseline cortisol and sex may have impacted the results, the results suggest that stress-induced cortisol is associated with difficulty in non-negative interpretation generation during the cognitive reappraisal process.

Anxiety and Depressed Mood Decline Following Smoking Abstinence in Adult Smokers with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

INTRODUCTION

A preponderance of relevant research has indicated reduction in anxiety and depressive symptoms following smoking abstinence. This secondary analysis investigated whether the phenomenon extends to smokers with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

METHODS

The study setting was an 11-Week double-blind placebo-controlled randomized trial of osmotic release oral system methylphenidate (OROS-MPH) as a cessation aid when added to nicotine patch and counseling. Participants were 255 adult smokers with ADHD. The study outcomes are: anxiety (Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI)) and depressed mood (Beck Depression Inventory II (BDI)) measured one Week and six Weeks after a target quit day (TQD). The main predictor is point-prevalence abstinence measured at Weeks 1 and 6 after TQD. Covariates are treatment (OROS-MPH vs placebo), past major depression, past anxiety disorder, number of cigarettes smoked daily, demographics (age, gender, education, marital status) and baseline scores on the BAI, BDI, and the DSM-IV ADHD Rating Scale.

RESULTS

Abstinence was significantly associated with lower anxiety ratings throughout the post-quit period (p<0.001). Depressed mood was lower for abstainers than non-abstainers at Week 1 (p<0.05), but no longer at Week 6 (p=0.83). Treatment with OROS-MPH relative to placebo showed significant reductions at Week 6 after TQD for both anxiety (p<0.05) and depressed mood (p<0.001), but not at Week 1. Differential abstinence effects of gender were observed. Anxiety and depression ratings at baseline predicted increased ratings of corresponding measures during the post-quit period.

CONCLUSION

Stopping smoking yielded reductions in anxiety and depressed mood in smokers with ADHD treated with nicotine patch and counseling. Treatment with OROS-MPH yielded mood reductions in delayed manner.

A model clarifying the role of mediators in the variability of mood states over time in people who stutter

PURPOSE

Elevated negative mood states such as social anxiety and depressive mood have been found in adults who stutter. Research is needed to assist in the development of a model that clarifies how factors like self-efficacy and social support contribute to the variability of negative mood states over time.

METHOD

Participants included 200 adults who stutter. A longitudinal design was employed to assess change in mood states over a period of five months. Hierarchical directed regression (path analysis) was used to determine contributory relationships between change in mood states and self-efficacy, social support, socio-demographic and stuttering disorder variables. Participants completed a comprehensive assessment regimen, including validated measures of mood states, perceived control (self-efficacy) and social support.

RESULTS

Results confirmed that self-efficacy performs a protective role in the change in mood states like anxiety and depressive mood. That is, self-efficacy cushioned the impact of negative mood states. Social support was only found to contribute a limited protective influence. Socio-demographic variables had little direct impact on mood states, while perceived severity of stuttering also failed to contribute directly to mood at any time point.

CONCLUSIONS

Mood was found to be influenced by factors that are arguably important for a person to cope and adjust adaptively to the adversity associated with fluency disorder. A model that explains how mood states are influenced over time is described. Implications of these results for managing adults who stutter with elevated negative mood states like social anxiety are discussed.

Comparison in decision-making between bulimia nervosa, anorexia nervosa, and healthy women: influence of mood status and pathological eating concerns

BACKGROUND

Decision-making is reported to be impaired in anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN), but the influence of mood status, pathophysiological eating, and weight concerns on the performance of decision-making ability between AN and BN is still unclear. The aims of this study were to investigate differential impairments in the decision-making process between AN, BN, and healthy controls (HC), and secondly, to explore the role of mood status, such as anxiety, depression, pathological eating, and weight concerns, in decision-making ability.

METHODS

Patients suffering from AN (n = 22), BN (n = 36) and age-matched HC (n = 51) were assessed for their decision-making abilities using the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT). Self-reported questionnaires including the Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire (EDE-Q), the Bulimia Investigatory Test, Edinburgh (BITE), the Eating Disorders Inventory, the Maudsley Obsessive-Compulsive Inventory measuring obsessive-compulsive traits, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, and the Toronto Alexithymia Scale were used to assess pathological eating concerns and attitude to feelings.

RESULTS

Significant differences in IGT performance were observed between BN and HC. Significant negative correlation was found between IGT performance and the BITE symptom subscale in AN. In BN, there was a negative correlation between the EDE-Q weight concerns subscale and IGT performance. It was also found that increased anxiety, depression, and eating/weight concerns predicted poorer decision-making.

CONCLUSION

Different patterns of association between pathological eating concerns/behaviors and performances in decision-making ability were found between AN, BN, and HC. Anxiety, depressive mood status, and eating/weight concerns were related to decision-making ability.

Insula and striatum activity in effort-related monetary reward processing in gambling disorder: the role of depressive symptomatology

The neurobiological underpinnings of effort-related monetary reward processing of gambling disorder have not been previously studied. To date neuroimaging studies lack in large sample sizes and as a consequence less attention has been given to brain reward processing that could potentially be attributed to comorbid conditions such as depressive mood state. We assessed monetary reward processing using an effort-dependent task during 3 tesla functional magnetic resonance imaging. We investigated a large sample of male, right-handed, slot-machine-playing disordered gamblers (DGs; N = 80) as well as age- and smoking-matched male healthy controls (HCs; N = 89). Depressive symptoms were assessed using the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). DGs and HCs were divided into subgroups ("high" and "low") based on their BDI scores. Effort-related monetary reward processing did not differ between the complete groups of HCs and DGs. Brain activation during receipt of monetary reward though revealed a significant Group × BDI interaction: DGs with higher BDI scores compared to DGs with lower BDI scores showed greater brain activity in the right insula cortex and dorsal striatum while no differences were observed for HCs with higher versus lower BDI scores. Our results suggest that effort-related aspects of monetary motivation, i.e. when monetary output is tied to performance, are not altered in DG. Additionally, our findings strengthen the need for subgroup comparisons in future investigations of the disorder as part of a personalized medicine approach.

Parkinson's patients cope with daylight saving time

Disturbances of the circadian timing system following daylight saving time (DST) may influence the symptoms of Parkinson's disease (PD). To address this question, we compared the severity of motor fluctuations and non-motor symptoms both before and after the time change. Total daily "off-time" based on diaries, excessive daytime sleepiness (Epworth Sleepiness Scale), depressive symptoms (Beck Depression Inventory), and psychosis associated with PD were assessed both before and after the DST. Eighty-three PD patients (mean age, 67±7.7years; mean disease duration, 10.4±6.4years) were included. Thirty-six patients had motor fluctuations (mean daily "off-time", 4.8±2.4h/day). There was no significant variation of the total daily "off-time" (2.5±2.6h/day versus 2.5±2.7h/day), ESS (8.3±4.8 versus 8.1±4.9), BDI (10.4±6.2 versus 10.0±6.9), or PAPD (1.4±1.6 versus 1.1±1.6) scores (P>0.05) after DST. Our results suggest that PD patients cope relatively well with DST.
