The horizontal gene transfer of perchlorate reduction genomic island in three bacteria from an ecological niche

Three new strains of dissimilatory perchlorate-reducing bacteria (DPRB), QD19-16, QD1-5, and P3-1, were isolated from an active sludge. Phylogenetic trees based on 16S rRNA genes indicated that QD19-16, QD1-5, and P3-1 belonged to Brucella, Acidovorax, and Citrobacter, respectively, expanding the distribution of DPRB in the Proteobacteria. The three strains were gram-negative and facultative anaerobes with rod-shaped cells without flagella, which were 1.0-1.6 μm long and 0.5-0.6 μm wide. The three DPRB strains utilized similar broad spectrum of electron donors and acceptors and demonstrated a similar capability to reduce perchlorate within 6 days. The enzyme activity of perchlorate reductase in QD19-16 toward chlorate was higher than that toward perchlorate. The high sequence similarity of the perchlorate reductase operon and chlorite dismutase genes in the perchlorate reduction genomic islands (PRI) of the three strains implied that they were monophyletic origin from a common ancestral PRI. Two transposase genes (tnp1 and tnp2) were found in the PRIs of strain QD19-16 and QD1-5, but were absent in the strain P3-1 PRI. The presence of fragments of IR sequences in the P3-1 PRI suggested that P3-1 PRI had previously contained these two tnp genes. Therefore, it is plausible to suggest that a common ancestral PRI transferred across the strains Brucella sp. QD19-16, Acidovorax sp. QD1-5, and Citrobacter sp. P3-1 through horizontal gene transfer, facilitated by transposases. These results provided a direct evidence of horizontal gene transfer of PRI that could jump across phylogenetically unrelated bacteria through transposase. KEY POINTS: • Three new DPRB strains can effectively remove high concentration of perchlorate. • The PRIs of three DPRB strains are acquired from a single ancestral PRI. • PRIs are incorporated into different bacteria genome through HGT by transposase.

Geographical distribution and ecological niche dynamics of Crassostrea sikamea (Amemiya, 1928) in China's coastal regions under climate change

Global climate change drives species redistribution, threatening biodiversity and ecosystem heterogeneity. The Kumamoto oyster, Crassostrea sikamea (Amemiya, 1928), one of the most promising aquaculture species because of its delayed reproductive timing, was once prevalent in southern China. In this study, an ensemble species distribution model was employed to analyze the distribution range shift and ecological niche dynamics of C. sikamea along China's coastline under the current and future climate scenarios (RCP 2.6-8.5 covering 2050 s and 2100 s). The model results indicated that the current habitat distribution for C. sikamea consists of a continuous stretch extending from the coastlines of Hainan Province to the northern shores of Jiangsu Province. By the 2050 s, the distribution range will stabilize at its southern end along the coast of Hainan Province, while expanding northward to cover the coastal areas of Shandong Province, showing a more dramatic trend of contraction in the south and invasion in the north by the 2100 s. In RCP8.5, the southern end retracts to the coasts of Guangdong, whereas the northern end covers all of China's coastal areas north of 34°N. C. sikamea can maintain relatively stable ecological niche characteristics, while it may occupy different ecological niche spaces under future climate conditions. Significant niche expansion will occur in lower temperature. We concluded C. sikamea habitats are susceptible to climate change. The rapid northward expansion of C. sikamea may open new possibilities for oyster farming in China, but it will also have important consequences for the ecological balance and biodiversity of receiving areas. It's imperative that we closely examine and strategize to address these repercussions for a win-win situation.

Recent genetic, phenetic and ecological divergence across the Mesoamerican highlands: a study case with Diglossa baritula (Aves: Thraupidae)

The topographical, geological, climatic and biodiversity complexity of Mesoamerica has made it a primary research focus. The Mesoamerican highlands is a region with particularly high species richness and within-species variation. The Cinnamon-bellied Flowerpiercer, Diglossa baritula (Wagler, 1832), is a species endemic to the Mesoamerican highlands, with three allopatric subspecies currently recognized. To characterize divergence within this species, we integrated genomics, morphology, coloration and ecological niche modeling approaches, obtained from sampling individuals across the entire geographic distribution of the species. Our results revealed a clear genomic divergence between the populations to the east versus the west of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. In contrast to the genomic results, morphology and coloration analyses showed intermediate levels of differentiation, indicating that population groups within D. baritula have probably been under similar selective pressures. Our morphology results indicated that the only sexually dimorphic morphological variable is the wing chord, with males having a longer wing chord than females. Finally, ecological data indicated that there are differences in ecological niche within D. baritula. Our data suggest that D. baritula could contain two or more incipient species at the intermediate phase of the speciation continuum. These results highlight the importance of the geographical barrier of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec and Pleistocene climatic events in driving isolation and population divergence in D. baritula. The present investigation illustrates the speciation potential of the D. baritula complex and the capacity of Mesoamerican highlands to create cryptic biodiversity and endemism.

Wide ecological niches ensure frequent harmful dinoflagellate blooms

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) and their consequences cause multiple devastating effects in various freshwater, brackish and marine ecosystems. However, HAB species at moderate population densities have positive ecological roles as primary producers of organic matter and food for zooplankton and fish. They also enhance benthic-pelagic coupling and participate in the biogeochemical cycles. The consequences of HABs are transported across the conventional environmental boundaries by numerous cascade effects in the food webs and beyond. Meanwhile, forecasts of bloom events are still limited, largely because of scarcity of reliable information on ecological niches of the bloom-forming algae. To fill up this knowledge gap, this study focused on dinoflagellates, a diverse group of mostly photosynthesizing protists (unicellular eukaryotes) capable of mixotrophy, since they play a key role in primary production and formation of blooms in marine and brackish waters worldwide. In this study, ecological niches of 17 abundant bloom-forming dinoflagellate species from coastal regions of the southern Baltic Sea were identified for the first time. It was hypothesized that wider ecological niches ensure more frequent dinoflagellate blooms compared to the species with narrower niches. This hypothesis was verified using the long-term (44 years) database on phytoplankton abundance and physical-chemical characteristics of the environment. It were analyzed 4534 datasets collected from 1972 to 2016. Fourteen abiotic parameters (water temperature, salinity, Secchi depth, pH, Chl a, and concentration of basic nutrients) were considered as ecological niche dimensions. The Principal Component Analysis presented the dissolved inorganic nitrogen, total nitrogen, Chl a, and temperature as principal niche dimensions of dinoflagellates. The algal bloom criteria were refined. It was for the first time proved statistically that HAB frequency of dinoflagellate species robustly correlated with the width of their ecological niches.

Overlooked role in bacterial assembly of different-sized granules in same sequencing batch reactor: Insights into bacterial niche of nutrient removal

The unique ecosystem within different-sized granules affects microbial assembly, which is crucial for wastewater treatment performance. This study operated an aerobic granular sludge system to evaluate its performance in treating synthetic municipal wastewater. Subsequently, the microbial community within different-sized granules was characterized to investigate bacterial assembly, and elucidated their biological potential for nutrient removal. The nutrient removal efficiencies were as follows: 93.8 ± 2.8 % chemical oxygen demand, 65.4 ± 4.0 % total nitrogen, and 93.8 ± 6.8 % total phosphorus. The analysis of microbial assembly unveiled remarkable diversity among different-sized sludges, the genus relative abundance displayed 61.4 % positive and 33.0 % negative correlation with sludge size. The excellent potential for organic degradation, denitrification, and polyphosphate accumulation occurred in sludge sizes of > 0.75 mm, 0.20-0.50 mm, and < 0.20 mm, respectively. Functional annotation further confirmed the nutrient removal potential within different-sized sludges. This study provides valuable insights into the bacterial niche of different-sized sludges, which can enhance their practical application.

Global erosion of terrestrial environmental space by artificial light at night

Artificial light at night (ALAN) disrupts natural light cycles, with biological impacts that span from behaviour of individual organisms to ecosystem functions, and across bacteria, fungi, plants and animals. Global consequences have almost invariably been inferred from the geographic distribution of ALAN. How ALAN is distributed in environmental space, and the extent to which combinations of environmental conditions with natural light cycles have been lost, is also key. Globally (between 60°N and 56°S), we ordinated four bioclimatic variables at 1.61 * 1.21 km resolution to map the position and density of terrestrial pixels within nighttime environmental space. We then used the Black Marble Nighttime Lights product to determine where direct ALAN emissions were present in environmental space in 2012 and how these had expanded in environmental space by 2022. Finally, we used the World Atlas of Artificial Sky Brightness to determine the proportion of environmental space that is unaffected by ALAN across its spatial distribution. We found that by 2012 direct ALAN emissions occurred across 71.9 % of possible nighttime terrestrial environmental conditions, with temperate nighttime environments and highly modified habitats disproportionately impacted. From 2012 to 2022 direct ALAN emissions primarily grew within 34.4 % of environmental space where it was already present, with this growth concentrated in tropical environments. Additionally considering skyglow, just 13.2 % of environmental space now only experiences natural light cycles throughout its distribution. With opportunities to maintain much of environmental space under such cycles fast disappearing, the removal, reduction and amelioration of ALAN from areas of environmental space in which it is already widespread is critical.

Predicting the potential nationwide distribution of the snail vector, Oncomelania hupensis quadrasi, in the Philippines using the MaxEnt algorithm

Schistosomiasis remains a major public health concern affecting approximately 12 million people in the Philippines due to inadequate information about the disease and limited prevention and control efforts. Schistosoma japonicum, one of the causative agents of the disease, requires an amphibious snail Oncomelania hupensis quadrasi (O. h. quadrasi) to complete its life cycle. Using the geographical information system (GIS) and maximum entropy (MaxEnt) algorithm, this study aims to predict the potential high-risk habitats of O. h. quadrasi driven by environmental factors in the Philippines. Based on the bioclimatic determinants, a very high-performance model was generated (AUC = 0.907), with the mean temperature of the driest quarter (25.3%) contributing significantly to the prevalence of O. h. quadrasi. Also, the snail vector has a high focal distribution, preferring areas with a pronounced wet season and high precipitation throughout the year. However, the findings provided evidence for snail adaptation to different environmental conditions. High suitability of snail habitats was found in Quezon, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Albay, Sorsogon, Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, Leyte, Bohol, Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur, Agusan del Norte, Davao del Norte, North Cotabato, Lanao del Norte, Misamis Occidental, and Zamboanga del Sur. Furthermore, snail habitat establishment includes natural and man-made waterlogged areas, with the progression of global warming and climate change predicted to be drivers of increasing schistosomiasis transmission zones in the country.

Integrating biogeographic approach into classical biological control: Assessing the climate matching and ecological niche overlap of two natural enemies against common ragweed in China

Plant invasion is considered a high priority threat to biodiversity, ecosystems, the environment, and human health worldwide. Classical biological control (biocontrol) is a generally safer and more environmentally benign measure than chemical controls in managing invasive alien plants (IAPs). However, the impacts of climate change and the importance of climate matching in ensuring the efficiency of biocontrol candidates in controlling IAPs are likely to be underestimated. Here, based on the ensemble model and n-dimensional hypervolumes concepts, we estimated the overlapping areas between Ambrosia artemisiifolia and its two most effective natural enemies (Ophraella communa and Epiblema strenuana) under climate change in China. Moreover, we compared their ecological niches, further assessing the impact of climate change on the efficiency of two natural enemies in controlling A. artemisiifolia in China. We found that the potentially suitable areas of the two natural enemies and A. artemisiifolia were primarily influenced by temperature and human influence index variables. Under near-current climate, the overlapping area between O. communa and A. artemisiifolia was the largest, followed by E. strenuana and A. artemisiifolia, and both two natural enemies and A. artemisiifolia. The ecological niche between A. artemisiifolia and O. communa was most similar (0.64), followed by A. artemisiifolia and E. strenuana (0.55). The separate control (the niche separation areas of the two natural enemies against A. artemisiifolia) and joint-control (the niche overlap areas of the two natural enemies against A. artemisiifolia) efficiencies of the two natural enemies against A. artemisiifolia will both increase in future climates (the 2030s and 2050s) in northern and northeastern China. Our findings demonstrate a new approach to assess control efficiency and screen potential release areas of two natural enemies against A. artemisiifolia in China without the need for actual field release or experimentation. Moreover, our findings provide important clues for ensuring the classical biocontrol of IAPs worldwide.

Using video docuseries to explore male professional football head coaches' well-being experiences throughout a season

Football coaches have disclosed how their work environment is unpredictable and demanding, comprising a multitude of stressors which can impede well-being. Additionally, the masculine culture within football often promotes suppression of voice, causing internalisation of thoughts and isolation. Due to professional football head coaches being a seldom-heard group, little is known about how they experience well-being within their given context (i.e., ecological niche). The present study utilised football docuseries and a bioecological framework to explore how four male professional head coaches experienced well-being whilst working in one of the top European football leagues (Premier League, La Liga). Four docuseries were sampled and resulted in the analysis of 31 episodes (Mduration = 46.6 min, SD = 4.5 min). The study implemented an adapted interpretative phenomenological analysis approach to illuminate convergences and divergences in contextual accounts. These accounts resulted in five group experiential themes: 'I belong to the game'; 'he belongs to the game'; 'you need the right people around you'; 'it's difficult to describe the manager without describing the person'; and 'people are trying to stab you'. The findings indicate that football coaches may experience identity conflicts and become deeply absorbed in their work. This impacts not only their well-being but also their family's, who they often turn to for social support. Consequently, by unveiling nuanced challenges to coaches' well-being, organisations may be better informed to offer more aligned and bespoke well-being support systems.

Distribution, assembly, and interactions of soil microorganisms in the bright coniferous forest area of China's cold temperate zone

The bright coniferous forest area in the cold temperate zone of China is a terrestrial ecosystem primarily dominated by low mountain Larix gmelinii trees. Limited information is available regarding the assembly mechanisms and interactions of microbial communities in the soil in this region. This study employed high-throughput techniques to obtain DNA from myxomycetes, bacteria, and fungi in the soil, evaluated their diversity in conjunction with environmental factors, associated them with the assembly process, and explored the potential interaction relationships between these microorganisms. The findings of our study showed that environmental factors had a more significant influence on the α and β diversity of bacteria compared to myxomycetes and fungi. Microbial communities were influenced by environmental selection and geographical diffusion, although environmental selection appeared to have a more significant impact than geographical diffusion. Our study suggested that different microorganisms exhibited unique evolutionary patterns and may have different assembly modes within phylogenetic groups. Myxomycetes and fungi exhibited a similar assembly process that was mainly influenced by stochastic dispersal limitation and drift. In contrast, bacteria's assembly process was primarily influenced by stochastic drift and deterministic homogeneous selection. The community of myxomycetes and fungi is greatly influenced by spatial distribution and random events, while bacteria have a relatively stable population composition in specific regions and may also be subject to environmental constraints. Finally, this study revealed that Humicolopsis cephalosporioides, a fungus that exclusively resided in cold environments, may play a critical role as a keystone species in maintaining molecular ecological networks and was considered a core member of the microbiome.

Unveiling the nitrogen removal performance from microbial network establishment in vertical flow constructed wetlands

The combined effects of substrate types (natural zeolite or shale ceramsite) and hydraulic retention time (HRT, 3-day or 6-day) on nutrient removal and microbial co-occurrence networks in vertical flow constructed wetlands (VFCWs) remains to be elucidated. In this study, zeolite-packed VFCWs demonstrated superior removal rates, achieving 93.65% removal of NH4+-N and 83.84% removal of COD at 6-day HRT. The activity and establishment of microbial community were influenced by combined operating conditions. The abundances of Amx, amoA, nxrA, and nosZ genes increased with longer HRTs in zeolite-packed VFCWs. Additionally, a 6-day HRT significantly increased the relative abundances of Proteobacteria and Nitrospirae. At the species level, zeolite-packed VFCWs exhibited ecological niche sharing as a coping strategy in response to environment changes, while ceramsite-packed VFCWs displayed ecological niche differentiation. Both zeolite-packed and ceramsite-packed VFCWs established functional networks of nitrogen-transforming genera that utilized ecological niche differentiation strategies.

Impact of climate change on the geographical distribution and niche dynamics of Gastrodia elata

Background

Gastrodia elata is widely used in China as a valuable herbal medicine. Owing to its high medicinal and nutrient value, wild resources of G. elata have been overexploited and its native areas have been severely damaged. Understanding the impacts of climate change on the distribution of this endangered species is important for the conservation and sustainable use of G. elata.

Methods

We used the optimized maximum entropy model to simulate the potential distribution of G. elata under contemporary and future time periods (1970-2000, 2050s, 2070s, and 2090s) and different climate change scenarios (SSP1-2.6, SSP2-4.5, SSP3-7.0, and SSP5-8.5). Under these conditions, we investigated the key environmental factors influencing the distribution of G. elata as well as the spatial and temporal characteristics of its niche dynamics.

Results

With high Maxent model accuracy (AUCmean = 0.947 ± 0.012, and the Kappa value is 0.817), our analysis revealed that annual precipitation, altitude, and mean temperature of driest quarter are the most important environmental factors influencing the distribution of G. elata. Under current bioclimatic conditions, the potentially suitable area for G. elata in China is 71.98 × 10⁴ km², while the highly suitable region for G. elata growth is 7.28 × 10⁴ km². Our models for three future periods under four climate change scenarios indicate that G. elata can maintain stable distributions in southern Shaanxi, southwestern Hubei, and around the Sichuan basin, as these areas are highly suitable for its growth. However, the center of the highly suitable areas of G. elata shift depending on different climatic scenarios. The values of niche overlap for G. elata show a decreasing trend over the forecasted periods, of which the niche overlap under the SSP3-7.0 scenario shows the greatest decrease.

Discussions

Under the condition of global climate change in the future, our study provides basic reference data for the conservation and sustainable utilization of the valuable and endangered medicinal plant G. elata. It is important to carefully choose the protection area of G. elata wild resources according the suitable area conditions modeled. Moreover, these findings will be valuable for providing insights into the breeding and artificial cultivation of this plant, including the selection of suitable areas for planting.

Stenotrophomonas pavanii DJL-M3 inoculated biochar stabilizes the rhizosphere soil homeostasis of carbendazim-stressed rice

Plant-microbe interactions have been effectively used in phytoremediation to reduce agrochemical contamination of crops and soils, but little information is available regarding the general effect of such association on rhizosphere soil homeostasis. In this study, we immobilized Stenotrophomonas pavanii DJL-M3, a carbendazim (CBZ)-degrading endophyte, in rice husk-derived biochar to control fungicide residue in the rice microenvironment. The influence of biochar inoculated with strain DJL-M3 on rhizobacterial communities was also investigated, including activity and fundamental function predictions. An adsorption kinetics test showed that strain DJL-M3 slowed the adsorption rate slightly without sacrificing the adsorption capacity of rice-husk biochar on CBZ. Immobilization in biochar helped S. pavanii DJL-M3 to establish an ecological niche in rhizosphere soils. This process significantly reduced CBZ levels in rice and rhizosphere soil while maintaining stable heterotrophic microbial respiration and carbon (C) metabolic activity. Soil amendment with the strain DJL-M3-biochar composite resulted in relatively little disturbance of fundamental soil functions, such as nitrogen (N) and sulfur (S) cycling, which explained the better plant growth and higher soil fertility observed with CBZ contamination. Overall, the combination of biochar and S. pavanii DJL-M3 demonstrated the potential to safeguard the microbiological environment of rice.

Integrating the flow regime and water quality effects into a niche-based metacommunity dynamics model for river ecosystems

Aquatic community dynamics are closely dominated by flow regime and water quality conditions, which are increasingly threatened by dam regulation, water diversion, and nutrition pollution. However, further understanding of the ecological impacts of flow regime and water quality conditions on aquatic multi-population dynamics has rarely been integrated into existing ecological models. To address this issue, a new niche-based metacommunity dynamics model (MDM) is proposed. The MDM aims to simulate the coevolution processes of multiple populations under changing abiotic environments, pioneeringly applied to the mid-lower Han River, China. The quantile regression method was used for the first time to derive ecological niches and competition coefficients of the MDM, which are demonstrated to be reasonable by comparing them with the empirical evidence. Simulation results show that the Nash efficiency coefficients for fish, zooplankton, zoobenthos, and macrophytes are more than 0.64, while the Pearson correlation coefficients for them are no less than 0.71. Overall, the MDM performs effectively in simulating metacommunity dynamics. For all river stations, the average contributions of biological interaction, flow regime effects, and water quality effects to multi-population dynamics are 64%, 21%, and 15%, respectively, suggesting that the population dynamics are dominated by biological interaction. For upstream stations, the fish population is 8%-22% more responsive to flow regime alteration than other populations, while other populations are 9%-26% more responsive to changes in water quality conditions than fish. For downstream stations, flow regime effects on each population account for less than 1% due to more stable hydrological conditions. The innovative contribution of this study lies in proposing a multi-population model to quantify the effects of flow regime and water quality on aquatic community dynamics by incorporating multiple indicators of water quantity, water quality, and biomass. This work has potential for the ecological restoration of rivers at the ecosystem level. This study also highlights the importance of considering threshold and tipping point issues when analyzing the "water quantity-water quality-aquatic ecology" nexus in future works.

Niche separation, dynamics, and transport pattern of trace elements along Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) to its exclusive predator, mackerel icefish (Champsocephalus gunnari)

In this study, the dynamics of the trophic niches and the accumulation and transfer of four trace elements-Cu, Cd, Zn, and Pb-from Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) to mackerel icefish (Champsocephalus gunnari) were investigated. The results demonstrated that the average concentrations of Zn, Cu, Cd, and Pb in E. superba were significantly higher than those of the corresponding elements in C. gunnari. These trace elements have a biodilution effect through E. superba to C. gunnari, and Cu has the lowest biomagnification factor among those four trace elements. It is observed that the Cu concentration in E. superba is correlated with its δ¹⁵N and δ¹³C, and the enrichment of Pb in C. gunnari is affected by its δ¹⁵N.

On the conditions promoting Pseudo-nitzschia spp. blooms in the eastern English Channel and southern North Sea

This study investigated the drivers of the blooms of Pseudo-nitzschia seriata and Pseudo-nitzschia delicatissima complexes in the eastern English Channel and southern North Sea. Phytoplankton data series acquired from 1992 to 2020 were analyzed with a multivariate statistical approach based on Hutchinson's niche concept. P. seriata and P. delicatissima complexes were found to be typically present year round, but they bloomed at different periods because they occupied different realized ecological niches. P. delicatissima complex occupied a more marginal niche and was less tolerant than P. seriata complex. P. delicatissima complex typically bloomed in April-May at the same time as Phaeocystis globosa while P. seriata complex blooms were more frequently observed in June during the decline of low intensity P. globosa blooms. P. delicatissima and P. seriata complexes were both favored by low-silicate environments and relatively low turbulence but they responded differently to water temperature, light, ammonium, phosphate and nitrite + nitrate conditions. Niche shifts and biotic interactions played important roles in the control of the blooms of P. delicatissima and P. seriata complexes. The two complexes occupied different sub-niches during their respective low abundance and bloom periods. The phytoplankton community structure and the number of other taxa presenting a niche overlapping the niches of P. delicatissima and P. seriata complexes also differed between these periods. P. globosa was the taxa contributing the most to the dissimilarity in community structure. P. globosa interacted positively with P. delicatissima complex and negatively with P. seriata complex.

Abiotic factors and heavy metals defining eco-physiological niche in fish

Ecosystem dynamics undergoing alterations in structure and function highlights the need to look into the relations between ecological parameters and organismal fitness and tolerance. Ecophysiological studies are used to understand how organisms adapt to and cope up with environmental stress. Current study uses a process-based approach to model physiochemical parameters regarding seven different fish species. Species respond to climatic variations via acclimation or adaptation through physiological plasticity. Four sites are differentiated into two types based on the water quality parameters and metal contamination. Seven fish species are clustered into two groups, each group depicting separate pattern of response in similar habitat. In this manner, biomarkers from three different physiological axes- stress, reproduction, and neurology were taken to determine the organism's ecological niche. Cortisol, Testosterone, Estradiol, and AChE are the signature molecules estimated for the said physiological axes. The ordination technique, nonmetric multidimensional scaling, has been utilized to visualize the differentiated physiological response to changing environmental conditions. Then, Bayesian Model Averaging (BMA) was used to identify the factors that play a key role in refining the stress physiology and determining the niche. Current study confirms different species belonging to similar habitats respond to various environmental and physiological factors in a different manner as various biomarkers respond in a species-specific pattern that induces the choice of habitat preference controlling its ecophysiological niche. In the present study, it is quite apparent that adaptive mechanism of fish to environmental stress is achieved through modification of physiological mechanisms through a panel of biochemical markers. These markers organize a cascade of physiological event at various levels including reproduction.

Improving the efficacy of different life-form macrophytes in phytoremediation of artificial eutrophic water by combined planting

Phytoremediation of the eutrophic water bodies by using various macrophytes has long been considered effective and economical. However, the understanding of combining macrophytes to maximize efficacy in the restoration is still limited. In this study, three different life-form macrophytes were employed to explore the optimal plant combination of eutrophic water purification, including Pontederia cordata L. (E: emergent), Pistia stratiotes L. (F: floating), and Hydrilla verticillata (L. f.) Royle (S: submerged). The effects on water quality, removal of the excess nutrients (TN, NH₃-N, NO₃-N, and TP) in the water, along with the growth response and the nutrient accumulation of the macrophytes were investigated both individually and in combination. The phytoremediation of every single macrophyte was significantly improved by combined planting and increasing the diversity of the combination led to better enhancements. In general, the treatment with macrophytes in three life forms (EFS) not only resulted in the highest removal rates of the TN, NH₃-N, NO₃-N, and TP (40.89, 33.50, 46.81, and 43.55%, respectively) but also decreased the turbidity and increased the dissolved oxygen more effectively and efficiently. Furthermore, EFS mitigated the environmental stress of plants and promoted the accumulation of TN and TP in them, especially the emergent macrophyte P. cordata. The combinations with macrophyte in two life forms (EF, ES, and FS) also exhibited unique strengths: the removal efficacy of TN (39.25%) and TP (46.16%) in FS, and NO₃-N in EF (48.54%) and ES (49.90%) were also at the forefront; the biomass and nutrient content of the submerged macrophyte H. verticillata in ES were the highest. Moreover, a strong correlation between the eutrophic factors and the plant physiological indexes was observed. These findings highlighted the role of combined planting in phytoremediation and provided a valuable reference for the development of ecological restoration for eutrophic ecosystems.

Responses of potential ammonia oxidation and ammonia oxidizers community to arsenic stress in seven types of soil

Soil arsenic contamination is of great concern because of its toxicity to human, crops, and soil microorganisms. However, the impacts of arsenic on soil ammonia oxidizers communities remain unclear. Seven types of soil spiked with 0 or 100 mg arsenic per kg soil were incubated for 180 days and sampled at days 1, 15, 30, 90 and 180. The changes in the community composition and abundance of ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and ammonia oxidizing archaea (AOA) were analyzed by terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism (T-RFLP) analysis, clone library sequencing, and quantitative PCR (qPCR) targeting amoA gene. Results revealed considerable variations in the potential ammonia oxidation (PAO) rates in different soils, but soil PAO was not consistently significantly inhibited by arsenic, probably due to the low bioavailable arsenic contents or the existence of functional redundancy between AOB and AOA. The variations in AOB and AOA communities were closely associated with the changes in arsenic fractionations. The amoA gene abundances of AOA increased after arsenic addition, whereas AOB decreased, which corroborated the notion that AOA and AOB might occupy different niches in arsenic-contaminated soils. Phylogenetic analysis of amoA gene-encoded proteins revealed that all AOB clone sequences belonged to the genus Nitrosospira, among which those belonging to Nitrosospira cluster 3a were dominant. The main AOA sequence detected belonged to Thaumarchaeal Group 1.1b, which was considered to have a high ability to adapt to environmental changes. Our results provide new insights into the impacts of arsenic on the soil nitrogen cycling.

The hybridization origin of the Chinese endemic herb genus Notopterygium (Apiaceae): Evidence from population genomics and ecological niche analysis

Hybridization is recognized as a major force in species evolution and biodiversity formation, generally leading to the origin and differentiation of new species. Multiple hybridization events cannot easily be reconstructed, yet they offer the potential to study a number of evolutionary processes. Here, we used nuclear expressed sequence tag-simple sequence repeat and large-scale single nucleotide polymorphism variation data, combined with niche analysis, to investigate the putative independent hybridization events in Notopterygium, a group of perennial herb plants endemic to China. Population genomic analysis indicated that the four studied species are genetically well-delimited and that N. forrestii and N. oviforme have originated by hybridization. According to Approximate Bayesian Computation, the best-fit model involved the formation of N. forrestii from the crossing of N. franchetii and N. incisum, with N. forrestii further backcrossing to N. franchetii to form N. oviforme. The niche analyses indicated that niche divergence [likely triggered by the regional climate changes, particularly the intensification of East Asian winter monsoon, and tectonic movements (affecting both Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau and Qinling Mountains)] may have promoted and maintained the reproductive isolation among hybrid species. N. forrestii shows ecological specialization with respect to their parental species, whereas N. oviforme has completely shifted its niche. These results suggested that the climate and environmental factors together triggered the two-step hybridization of the East Asia herb plants. Our study also emphasizes the power of genome-wide SNPs for investigating suspected cases of hybridization, particularly unravelling old hybridization events.

The impact of global warming on the potential suitable planting area of Pistacia chinensis is limited

Pistacia chinensis Bunge. is one of the main woody oil crops with a large artificial planting area in China and has important economic and ecological value. Here, based on 237 occurrence data and 22 environmental variables, we explored the potential planting area of P. chinensis in China in the present and future climate change scenarios by using a comprehensive model method. To fully consider the potential planting area of P. chinensis under specific climate change conditions and the limitations of soil conditions, we separately built two niche models to simulate the climate niche and soil demand niche, and then used the intersection of the two models as the result of the comprehensive habitat suitability model, finally, we used land-use data to filter the CHS model result. Our results showed, that under the baseline condition, the potential planting area of P. chinensis covers approximately 0.74 × 10⁶ km² in China. The future projection showed that the impact of global warming on the potentially suitable planting area of P. chinensis is limited, and most of the existing suitable habitats are not affected by climate change. With increasing temperature, the potential planting area will expand northward and slightly contract in the south margin, and its area will be slightly increased. Therefore, this species has great planting potential in China and should be given priority in the future afforestation plan.

Drying shapes the ecological niche of aquatic fungi with implications on ecosystem functioning

Fungi are among the most abundant and diverse organisms on Earth and play pivotal roles in global carbon processing, nutrient cycling and food webs. Despite their abundant and functional importance, little is known about the patterns and mechanisms governing their community composition in intermittent rivers and ephemeral streams, which are the most common fluvial ecosystems globally. Thus far, it is known that aquatic fungi have evolved various life-history strategies and functional adaptations to cope with drying. Nevertheless, some of these adaptations have a metabolic cost and trade-offs between growth, reproduction and dispersion that may affect ecosystem functioning. Thus, understanding their ecological strategies along a gradient of drying is crucial to assess how species will respond to global change and to identify meaningful taxa to maintain ecosystem functions. By combining in situ hydrological information with a niche-based approach, we analysed the role of drying in explaining the spatial segregation of fungal species, and we determined their specialization and affinity over a gradient of drying. In addition, we estimated whether species niches are good predictors of two key ecosystem processes: organic matter decomposition and fungal biomass accrual. Overall, we found that annual drying duration and frequency were the most influential variables upon species niche differentiation across the 15 studied streams. Our cluster analysis identified four drying niche-based groups with contrasting distributions and responses over the drying gradient: drying-sensitive, partly tolerant to drying, generalist, and drying-resistant specialist. In addition, we found that species belonging to the drying specialist group showed a weak contribution to both ecosystem processes, suggesting trade-offs between drying resistance strategies and the energy invested in growth. Taken together, our results suggest that increased water scarcity may jeopardise the capacity of aquatic fungi to guarantee ecosystem functioning and to maintain biogeochemical cycles despite their ability to cope with drying.

Thermoregulatory behavior of lekking male desert locusts, Schistocerca gregaria, in the Sahara Desert

Most terrestrial animals are constrained by extreme heat conditions such as midday desert environments, while a few terrestrial ectothermic insects are active in such ecological niches. Sexually mature males of the desert locust (Schistocerca gregaria) in the Sahara Desert remain on the open ground, despite the ground temperatures exceeding their lethal limit, to form leks and to mate incoming gravid females during the daytime. Lekking male locusts apparently suffer from extreme heat stress and greatly fluctuating thermal conditions. The present study examined the thermoregulatory strategies of the lekking male S. gregaria. Our field observations showed that lekking males changed their body orientation toward the sun depending on the temperature and time of day. In the relatively cool morning, males basked by orienting perpendicular to the sun's rays, maximizing the area of body surface exposed to the sun's rays. In contrast, around midday, when the ground surface temperature exceeded lethal high temperatures, some males tended to shelter inside the plants or remain in the shade. However, the remainder stayed on the ground, stilted (i.e., extending their legs to raise their bodies off the hot ground) and oriented parallel to the sun's rays, which minimized radiative heating. Measurements of body temperature throughout the hot middle period of the day confirmed that the stilting posture prevented overheating. Their critical lethal body temperature was as high as 54.7 °C. In this lekking system, gravid females enter male leks by flying. These incoming females usually landed on open ground, whereupon nearby males immediately approached, mounted, and mated the female, implying that males with greater heat-tolerance can increase mating chance. These results suggest that behavioral thermoregulation and physiologically high heat tolerance of male desert locusts allows them to endure extreme thermal conditions for lekking.

Microbial dynamics reveal the adaptation strategies of ecological niche in distinct anammox consortia under mainstream conditions

The feasibility of anammox-based processes for nitrogen-contained wastewater treatment has been verified with different anammox bacteria, however, the ecological niche of anammox bacteria under mainstream conditions is still elusive. In this study, six sludge samples collected from different habitats were utilized to culture anammox bacteria under mainstream conditions, and two distinct anammox genera (Ca. Kuenenia and Ca. Brocadia) with a relative abundance of 6.31% (C1) and 3.09% (C3), respectively, were identified. Notably, the microbial dynamics revealed that anammox bacteria (AMX), ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB), nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB), Chloroflexi bacteria (CFX), and heterotrophic denitrification bacteria (HDB) were the core members in anammox consortia. However, Ca. Kuenenia and Ca. Brocadia occupied different ecological niches in anammox consortia. The dissolved oxygen and microbial structures of the anammox-continuous stirred tank reactor systems were the main factors to affect their niche differentiation. Meanwhile, comammox might exist in the systems and occupy the ecological niche of AOB in nitrogen cycling. The network analysis suggested that Ignavibacterium could be the associated bacteria in Ca. Kuenenia-dominated consortia, while Ca. Nitrotoga was that in the Ca. Brocadia-dominated consortia. Our findings reveal a valuable reference for the observation of distinct anammox genera under mainstream conditions, which provides theoretical guidance for the engineering application of mainstream anammox-based processes.

Origin, fluxes, and reservoirs of Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa in aquatic ecosystems of a French floodplain

The release and spread of opportunistic pathogens - some of which are resistant to antibiotics - in the environment is a major public health challenge worldwide. In this study, we found evidence of the origin of such microorganisms and characterized their dispersal and survival in floodplain ecosystems to understand their fate in the environment. We determined the concentrations of Escherichia coli, extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBL)-producing E. coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, ESBL-producing K. pneumoniae, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa in a floodplain of Eastern France using a culture-based method. Furthermore, we assessed the population structure of E. coli isolates by quadruplex PCR, their plasmid replicon content by PCR-based replicon typing, and the nature of their bla_ESBL genes by PCR and sequencing. The main aquatic ecosystems of the floodplain (river, tributaries, riverine wetlands, and groundwater) were sampled monthly over a one-year cycle. The majority of E. coli isolates retrieved in the studied floodplain were likely of human origin. Moreover, contamination of floodplain aquatic ecosystems by opportunistic pathogens mainly resulted from hydrological fluxes during high-flow periods, suggesting that dispersal and dilution predominated. During low-flow periods, E. coli may be able to survive for several months in isolated ecosystems in which it may find favourable conditions to thrive. The most nutrient-rich and isolated wetlands are consequently potential pathogen reservoirs. The production of ESBL was not a disadvantage for E. coli in low-anthropized floodplain ecosystems.

Forest tree species distribution for Europe 2000-2020: mapping potential and realized distributions using spatiotemporal machine learning

This article describes a data-driven framework based on spatiotemporal machine learning to produce distribution maps for 16 tree species (Abies alba Mill., Castanea sativa Mill., Corylus avellana L., Fagus sylvatica L., Olea europaea L., Picea abies L. H. Karst., Pinus halepensis Mill., Pinus nigra J. F. Arnold, Pinus pinea L., Pinus sylvestris L., Prunus avium L., Quercus cerris L., Quercus ilex L., Quercus robur L., Quercus suber L. and Salix caprea L.) at high spatial resolution (30 m). Tree occurrence data for a total of three million of points was used to train different algorithms: random forest, gradient-boosted trees, generalized linear models, k-nearest neighbors, CART and an artificial neural network. A stack of 305 coarse and high resolution covariates representing spectral reflectance, different biophysical conditions and biotic competition was used as predictors for realized distributions, while potential distribution was modelled with environmental predictors only. Logloss and computing time were used to select the three best algorithms to tune and train an ensemble model based on stacking with a logistic regressor as a meta-learner. An ensemble model was trained for each species: probability and model uncertainty maps of realized distribution were produced for each species using a time window of 4 years for a total of six distribution maps per species, while for potential distributions only one map per species was produced. Results of spatial cross validation show that the ensemble model consistently outperformed or performed as good as the best individual model in both potential and realized distribution tasks, with potential distribution models achieving higher predictive performances (TSS = 0.898, R2 logloss = 0.857) than realized distribution ones on average (TSS = 0.874, R2 logloss = 0.839). Ensemble models for Q. suber achieved the best performances in both potential (TSS = 0.968, R2 logloss = 0.952) and realized (TSS = 0.959, R2 logloss = 0.949) distribution, while P. sylvestris (TSS = 0.731, 0.785, R2 logloss = 0.585, 0.670, respectively, for potential and realized distribution) and P. nigra (TSS = 0.658, 0.686, R2 logloss = 0.623, 0.664) achieved the worst. Importance of predictor variables differed across species and models, with the green band for summer and the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) for fall for realized distribution and the diffuse irradiation and precipitation of the driest quarter (BIO17) being the most frequent and important for potential distribution. On average, fine-resolution models outperformed coarse resolution models (250 m) for realized distribution (TSS = +6.5%, R2 logloss = +7.5%). The framework shows how combining continuous and consistent Earth Observation time series data with state of the art machine learning can be used to derive dynamic distribution maps. The produced predictions can be used to quantify temporal trends of potential forest degradation and species composition change.

Multidecadal assessment of environmental variables in the river Ganga for pollution monitoring and sustainable management

The Ganga River is the major source of drinking water for humans over the decades. It is also the ecological niche for millions of relict species, i.e., for a variety of planktons, benthic organisms, fish, and various other aquatic organisms. The blasting population resulted in an enhanced rate of pollution in the river system emanating from various anthropogenic activities and industrialization in the bank of river Ganga. The study was made in the middle and lower stretch of the river to monitor the decadal changes in the water quality of river Ganga from 1960 to 2019 at six different study sites. In the present study, various water quality parameters such as dissolved oxygen, pH, free carbon dioxide, total alkalinity, conductivity, total dissolved solids (TDS), hardness, chloride, and nitrate have been studied during 2015-2019. The data for 1960 to 2006 were taken from ICAR-CIFRI publications. Based on the studied parameters, National Sanitation Foundation (NSF)-water quality index (WQI) was calculated. In the present study, it was found that the calculated NSF-WQI was 69.24 in 1960-1961 which increased up to 113.39 during 2001-2006. But, with the implementation of various rejuvenating strategies, the WQI of the river got reduced to 106.48 during 2015-2019. This reflected the positive changes in the riverine system. Different water quality parameters such as dissolved oxygen, pH, and hardness were observed mostly within the permissible range as based on the drinking water guidelines for humans and survival of the aquatic organisms as well, except a few location-specific observations.

Dramatic impact of future climate change on the genetic diversity and distribution of ecologically relevant Western Mediterranean Carex (Cyperaceae)

Anticipating the evolutionary responses of species to ongoing climate change is essential to propose effective management and conservation measures. The Western Mediterranean Basin constitutes one of the hotspots of biodiversity where the effects of climate change are expected to be more dramatic. Plant species with ecological relevance constitute ideal models to evaluate and predict the impact of climate change on ecosystems. Here we investigate these impacts through the spatio-temporal comparison of genetic diversity/structure (AFLPs), potential distribution under different future scenarios of climate change, and ecological space in two Western Mediterranean sister species of genus Carex. Both species are ecologically key in their riparian habitats, but display contrasting distribution patterns, with one widespread in the Iberian Peninsula and North Africa (C. reuteriana), while the other (C. panormitana) is a restricted, probably endangered, Central Mediterranean endemic. At present, we found a strong genetic structure driven by geography in both species, and lower values of genetic diversity and a narrower ecological space in C. panormitana than in C. reuteriana, while the allelic rarity was higher in the former than in C. reuteriana subspecies. Future projections predict an overall dramatic reduction of suitable areas for both species under all climate change scenarios, which could be almost total for C. panormitana. In addition, gene diversity was inferred to decrease in all taxa, with genetic structure reinforcing in C. reuteriana by the loss of admixture among populations. Our findings stress the need for a reassessment of C. panormitana conservation status under IUCN Red List criteria and the implementation of conservation measures.

Improved methane production with redox-active/conductive biochar amendment by establishing spatial ecological niche and mediating electron transfer

The multifunctional roles of biochar as an additive in improving the performance of anaerobic digestion (AD) has not been perfectly understood. In this study, the effects of different biochars on AD and the enhanced mechanisms were explored. The CH₄ productions were significantly improved with an increase of 45.9%, 28.3% and 16.5% by amendment with biochar pyrolyzed at 300℃ (BC300), 450℃ (BC450) and 600℃ (BC600), respectively. The tightly-bound communities were established on biochar at the initial stage of fermentation and functional microbes were selectively enriched/colonized in biochar-amended systems. Distinctive loosely-bound microbial communities were observed in BC300 and BC600 amended systems, among which electroactive Desulforhabdus and Clostridiales were the dominant bacteria. Biochar amendments also led to the formation of distinctive spatial ecological niches and the selection preference of microbes for specific spatial locations. These results provided new insights in revealing the potential mechanisms of enhanced AD performance by biochar amendment.

Comparative Analyses of the Gut Microbiome of Two Fox Species, the Red Fox (Vulpes Vulpes) and Corsac Fox (Vulpes Corsac), that Occupy Different Ecological Niches

The gut microbiome is integral for the host's living and environmental adaptation and crucially important for understanding host adaptive mechanisms. The red fox (Vulpes vulpes) dominates a wider ecological niche and more complicated habitat than that of the corsac fox (V. corsac). However, the adaptive mechanisms (in particular, the gut microbiome responsible for this kind of difference) are still unclear. Therefore, we investigated the gut microbiome of these two species in the Hulunbuir grassland, China, and evaluated their microbiome composition, function, and adaptive mechanisms. We profiled the gut microbiome and metabolism function of red and corsac foxes via 16S rRNA gene and metagenome sequencing. The foxes harbored species-specific microbiomes and functions that were related to ecological niche and habitat. The red fox had abundant Bacteroides, which leads to significant enrichment of metabolic pathways (K12373 and K21572) and enzymes related to chitin and carbohydrate degradation that may help the red fox adapt to a wider niche. The corsac fox harbored large proportions of Blautia, Terrisporobacter, and ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters (K01990, K02003, and K06147) that can help maintain corsac fox health, allowing it to live in harsh habitats. These results indicate that the gut microbiome of the red and corsac foxes may have different abilities which may provide these species with differing capabilities to adapt to different ecological niches and habitats, thus providing important microbiome data for understanding the mechanisms of host adaptation to different niches and habitats.

Ecological trap for seabirds due to the contamination caused by the Fundão dam collapse, Brazil

Human-induced rapid environmental changes can disrupt habitat quality in the short term. A decrease in quality of habitats associated with preference for these over other available higher quality is referred as ecological trap. In 2015, the Fundão dam containing iron mining tailings, eastern Brazil, collapsed and released about 50 million cubic meters of metal-rich mud composed by Fe, As, Cd, Hg, Pb in three rivers and the adjacent continental shelf. The area is a foraging site for dozens of seabird and shorebird species. In this study, we used a dataset from before and after Fundão dam collapse containing information on at-sea distribution during foraging activities (biologging), dietary aspects (stable isotopes), and trace elements concentration in feathers and blood from three seabird species known to use the area as foraging site: Phaethon aethereus, Sula leucogaster, and Pterodroma arminjoniana. In general, a substantial change in foraging strategies was not detected, as seabirds remain using areas and food resources similar to those used before the dam collapse. However, concentration of non-essential elements increased (e.g., Cd and As) while essential elements decreased (e.g., Mn and Zn), suggesting that the prey are contaminated by trace elements from tailings. This scenario represents evidence of an ecological trap as seabirds did not change habitat use, even though it had its quality reduced by contamination. The sinking-resuspension dynamics of tailings deposited on the continental shelf can temporally increase seabird exposure to contaminants, which can promote deleterious effects on populations using the region as foraging sites in medium and long terms.

Mountain frog species losing out to climate change around the Sichuan Basin

Amphibians are particularly vulnerable to climate changes that are expected to cause habitat fragmentation and loss and, ultimately, local extirpations. However, little is known about how the interaction between climate change and fragmentation may impede the ability of amphibians to adapt to climate change. Here, we used the iconic mountain frog Quasipaa boulengeri as an indicator species to extrapolate climate-driven shifts in its habitat availability and connectivity in central and southern China according to the minimum and maximum representative concentration pathways. The models projected an average habitat loss of 36%-71% and the in situ and ex situ climate-change refugia to be 29%-64% and 5%-18% of the present-day suitable habitats, respectively. An increase in habitat fragmentation was reflected in a 51% decrease in core patch size, a 9% increase in the mean least-cost path (LCP) length, and a 19% increase in the cost-weighted distance. These climate-driven shifts varied spatially around the Sichuan Basin, with those in the southeast of the Basin being the most pronounced habitat and connectivity losses and those along the Basin being relatively optimistic. The effectiveness of refugia may only be maintained through a narrow passageway along the southern Sichuan Basin because of the presence of LCPs over time. Our results emphasize the need to understand how climate change and connectivity will jointly affect the distribution of mountain amphibians and to accordingly adopt conservation strategies. Further, our findings highlight the importance of identifying and preserving climate-change refugia and habitat connectivity for species persistence and conservation planning.

Forecasting shifts in habitat suitability across the distribution range of a temperate small pelagic fish under different scenarios of climate change

Climate change often leads to shifts in the distribution of small pelagic fish, likely by changing the match-mismatch dynamics between these sensitive species within their environmental optima. Using present-day habitat suitability, we projected how different scenarios of climate change (IPCC Representative Concentration Pathways 2.6, 4.5 and 8.5) may alter the large scale distribution of European sardine Sardina pilchardus (a model species) by 2050 and 2100. We evaluated the variability of species-specific environmental optima allowing a comparison between present-day and future scenarios. Regardless of the scenario, sea surface temperature and salinity and the interaction between current velocity and distance to the nearest coast were the main descriptors responsible for the main effects on sardine's distribution. Present-day and future potential "hotspots" for sardine were neritic zones (<250 km) with water currents <0.4 m s^-1, where SST was between 10 and 22 °C and SSS > 20 (PSU), on average. Most variability in projected shifts among climatic scenarios was in habitats with moderate to low suitability. By the end of this century, habitat suitability was projected to increase in the Canary Islands, Iberian Peninsula, central North Sea, northern Mediterranean, and eastern Black Sea and to decrease in the Atlantic African coast, southwest Mediterranean, English Channel, northern North Sea and Western U.K. A gradual poleward-eastward shift in sardine distribution was also projected among scenarios. This shift was most pronounced in 2100 under RCP 8.5. In that scenario, sardines had a 9.6% range expansion which included waters along the entire coast of Norway up and into the White Sea. As habitat suitability is mediated by the synergic effects of climate variability and change on species fitness, it is critical to apply models with robust underlying species-habitat data that integrate knowledge on the full range of processes shaping species productivity and distribution.

The ecological niche and terrestrial environment jointly influence the altitudinal pattern of aquatic biodiversity

The altitudinal distribution of biodiversity in alpine ecosystems has captured academic attention, especially in streams because of their sensitivity to climate change. In the past years, research mainly focused on understanding the role played by alpine streams' internal factors such as aquatic environmental variables, as well as physical and hydrological conditions, on the shaping of benthic macroinvertebrate communities. More recently, external factors such as terrestrial environments were included in analyses worldwide. In particular, the inherent properties constituting the ecological niche of specific species were considered as factors regulating dispersal and influencing community construction. The objective of this study was to reveal the distribution pattern and the driving factors regulating aquatic biodiversity in alpine streams. We hypothesized that the altitudinal distribution of aquatic macroinvertebrates could be explained by the interaction of the aquatic environment with both species' ecological niche and the terrestrial environment surrounding their habitat, and that rare species display a more pronounced pattern than widespread dominant species. To test these hypotheses, samples were collected from two alpine streams situated on opposite slopes of Biluo Snow Mountain in Yunnan Province, China. Results of statistical analyses showed poor explanatory power from aquatic environmental factors, while the differences in vegetation type and the ecological niche of the species played an important role in determining the distribution pattern of aquatic biodiversity. Furthermore, we found that the altitudinal distribution pattern of aquatic biodiversity exhibits a bimodal type, with rare species fitting the bimodal peaks. These findings call for a better inclusion and further investigation on the effects of the terrestrial environment on aquatic ecosystems.

Spatio-temporal analysis and determination of the ecological niche model of Giardia Lamblia (Lambl, 1859) in Ardabil province, northwestern Iran

Intestinal parasites have a serious health problem and frequently infect children in poor urban areas in developing countries. Some types of Cryptosporidium, Entamoeba and Giardia are amongst the most prevalent ones. The aim of this study was explore the distribution pattern of intestinal parasites and the ecological niche of Giardia lamblia in Ardabil Province. This was retrospective cross-sectional study, the officially registered statistics of health centers and hospitals in Ardabil University of Medical Sciences from January 2017 to December 2019 were used. The Kriging interpolation analysis was run to detect the high-risk areas of the disease in the province (P < 0.05) by ArcGIS10.4.1 and to construct the ecological niche model of the G.lamblia parasite, analyzed by Maxent3.3 software. Totally of 238 cases of intestinal parasite were reported during the study period, 77.7% of which were males and 22.3% females. Seven types of intestinal parasites were prevalent with G.lamblia species (79.4%) being the most and Entamoeba histolytica species (4%) the least prevalent one. There was one hotspot in the province in the center with an incidence risk of 41-45.5%. The most important climate and environmental factors affecting the ecological niche of G.lamblia are Bio16, Bio3, and the NDVI. G.lamblia is the most prevalent intestinal parasite in Ardabil Province; moreover, one important hotspots was also detected in the province that can provide useful information regarding the management and control of this parasite.

Topography drives microgeographic adaptations of closely related species in two tropical tree species complexes

Closely related tree species that grow in sympatry are abundant in rainforests. However, little is known of the eco-evolutionary processes that govern their niches and local coexistence. We assessed genetic species delimitation in closely related sympatric species belonging to two Neotropical tree species complexes and investigated their genomic adaptation to a fine-scale topographic gradient with associated edaphic and hydrologic features. Combining LiDAR-derived topography, tree inventories, and single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) from gene capture experiments, we explored genome-wide population genetic structure, covariation of environmental variables, and genotype-environment association to assess microgeographic adaptations to topography within the species complexes Symphonia (Clusiaceae), and Eschweilera (Lecythidaceae) with three species per complex and 385 and 257 individuals genotyped, respectively. Within species complexes, closely related tree species had different realized optima for topographic niches defined through the topographic wetness index or the relative elevation, and species displayed genetic signatures of adaptations to these niches. Symphonia species were genetically differentiated along water and nutrient distribution particularly in genes responding to water deprivation, whereas Eschweilera species were genetically differentiated according to soil chemistry. Our results suggest that varied topography represents a powerful driver of processes modulating tropical forest biodiversity with differential adaptations that stabilize local coexistence of closely related tree species.

Variation partitioning in double-constrained multivariate analyses: linking communities, environment, space, functional traits, and ecological niches

Constrained multivariate analysis is a common tool for linking ecological communities to environment. The follow-up is the development of the double-constrained correspondence analysis (dc-CA), integrating traits as species-related predictors. Further, methods have been proposed to integrate information on phylogenetic relationships and space variability. We expand this framework, proposing a dc-CA-based algorithm for decomposing variation in community structure and testing the simple and conditional effects of four sets of predictors: environment characteristics and space configuration as predictors related to sites, while traits and niche (dis)similarities as species-related predictors. In our approach, ecological niches differ from traits in that the latter are distinguished by and characterize the individual level, while niches are measured on the species level, and when compared, they are characteristics of communities and should be used as separate predictors. The novelties of this approach are the introduction of new niche parameters, niche dissimilarities, synthetic niche-based diversity which we related to environmental features, the development of an algorithm for the full variation decomposition and testing of the community–environment–niche–traits–space (CENTS) space by dc-CAs with and without covariates, and new types of diagrams for the results. Applying these methods to a dataset on freshwater mollusks, we learned that niche predictors may be as important as traits in explaining community structure and are not redundant, overweighting the environmental and spatial predictors. Our algorithm opens new pathways for developing integrative methods linking life, environment, and other predictors, both in theoretical and practical applications, including assessment of human impact on habitats and ecological systems.

Inferring Distributional Shifts of Asian Giant Hornet Vespa mandarinia Smith in Climate Change Scenarios

Vespa mandarinia Smith is a species with native distribution in Asia and with the potential distribution of invasion in the Americas. We use ecological niche models to be able to predict their potential distribution in Asia and their projection in the Americas using KUENM in R in climate change scenarios. The ecological niche of V. mandarinia is potentially distributed in Asia and is expected with invasion potential in the east coast of USA, part of the México, Central America, and South America, while for 2050 it is projected with dispersion in North and Central of USA and rest of the Americas. The realized niche expanded in the Americas. Ecological niche modeling helps us infer the distribution of this species in Asia and its possible establishment of invasion in the USA, México, Central America, and South America.

Data-driven and interpretable machine-learning modeling to explore the fine-scale environmental determinants of malaria vectors biting rates in rural Burkina Faso

Background

Improving the knowledge and understanding of the environmental determinants of malaria vector abundance at fine spatiotemporal scales is essential to design locally tailored vector control intervention. This work is aimed at exploring the environmental tenets of human-biting activity in the main malaria vectors (Anopheles gambiae s.s., Anopheles coluzzii and Anopheles funestus) in the health district of Diébougou, rural Burkina Faso.

Methods

Anopheles human-biting activity was monitored in 27 villages during 15 months (in 2017–2018), and environmental variables (meteorological and landscape) were extracted from high-resolution satellite imagery. A two-step data-driven modeling study was then carried out. Correlation coefficients between the biting rates of each vector species and the environmental variables taken at various temporal lags and spatial distances from the biting events were first calculated. Then, multivariate machine-learning models were generated and interpreted to (i) pinpoint primary and secondary environmental drivers of variation in the biting rates of each species and (ii) identify complex associations between the environmental conditions and the biting rates.

Results

Meteorological and landscape variables were often significantly correlated with the vectors’ biting rates. Many nonlinear associations and thresholds were unveiled by the multivariate models, for both meteorological and landscape variables. From these results, several aspects of the bio-ecology of the main malaria vectors were identified or hypothesized for the Diébougou area, including breeding site typologies, development and survival rates in relation to weather, flight ranges from breeding sites and dispersal related to landscape openness.

Conclusions

Using high-resolution data in an interpretable machine-learning modeling framework proved to be an efficient way to enhance the knowledge of the complex links between the environment and the malaria vectors at a local scale. More broadly, the emerging field of interpretable machine learning has significant potential to help improve our understanding of the complex processes leading to malaria transmission, and to aid in developing operational tools to support the fight against the disease (e.g. vector control intervention plans, seasonal maps of predicted biting rates, early warning systems).

Climatic niche differences among Zootoca vivipara clades with different parity modes: implications for the evolution and maintenance of viviparity

Parity mode (oviparity/viviparity) importantly affects the ecology, morphology, physiology, biogeography and evolution of organisms. The main hypotheses explaining the evolution and maintenance of viviparity are based on bioclimatic predictions and also state that the benefits of viviparity arise during the reproductive period. We identify the main climatic variables discriminating between viviparous and oviparous Eurasian common lizard (Zootoca vivipara) occurrence records during the reproductive period and over the entire year.

Analyses based on the climates during the reproductive period show that viviparous clades inhabit sites with less variable temperature and precipitation. On the contrary, analyses based on the annual climates show that viviparous clades inhabit sites with more variable temperatures.

Results from models using climates during reproduction are in line with the “selfish-mother hypothesis”, which can explain the success of viviparity, the maintenance of the two reproductive modes, and why viviparous individuals cannot colonize sites inhabited by oviparous ones (and vice versa). They suggest that during the reproductive period viviparity has an adaptive advantage over oviparity in less risky habitats thanks to the selfish behaviour of the mothers. Moreover, the results from both analyses stress that hypotheses about the evolution and maintenance of viviparity need to be tested during the reproductive period.

Modelling selection, drift, dispersal and their interactions in the community assembly of Amazonian soil mites

Three processes can explain contemporary community assembly: natural selection, ecological drift and dispersal. However, quantifying their effects has been complicated by confusion between different processes and neglect of expected interactions among them. One possible solution is to simultaneously model the expected effects of each process within species, across communities and across species, thus providing more integrative tests of ecological theory. Here, we used generalized linear mixed models to assess the effects of selection, drift and dispersal on the occurrence probability of 135 soil oribatid mite species across 55 sites over an Amazonian rainforest landscape (64 km²). We tested for interactions between process-related factors and partitioned the explained variation among them. We found that occurrence probability (1) responded to soil P content and litter mass depending on body size and reproductive mode (sexual or parthenogenetic), respectively (selection); (2) increased with community size (drift); and (3) decreased with distance to the nearest source population, and more so in rare species (dispersal limitation). Processes did not interact significantly, and our best model explained 67% of the overall variation in species occurrence probability. However, most of the variation was attributable to dispersal limitation (55%). Our results challenge the seldom-tested theoretical prediction that ecological processes should interact. Rather, they suggest that dispersal limitation overrides the signatures of drift and selection at the landscape level, thus rendering soil microarthropod species ecologically equivalent and possibly contributing to the maintenance of metacommunity diversity.

Contrasting ecological niches lead to great postzygotic ecological isolation: a case of hybridization between carnivorous and herbivorous cyprinid fishes

Background

Postzygote isolation is an important part of species isolation, especially for fish, and it can be divided into two aspects: genetic isolation and ecological isolation. With the increase in parental genetic distance, the intensity of genetic isolation between them also increases. Will the increase in parental ecological niche differences also lead to the increase in ecological isolation intensity between them? This question is difficult to answer based on the current literature due to the lack of hybridization cases of contrasting ecological niche parents.

Results

Cyprinid fish parents (Schizothorax wangchiachii and Percocypris pingi) with contrasting ecological niches (herbivorous and carnivorous) and their F1 hybrids were used as research objects. Fish and periphytic algae were selected as food corresponding to different parental resources. The foraging-related traits of these hybrids are generally the same between parents; however, the intermediate foraging traits of hybrids did not result in intermediate foraging performance for parental resources, and these hybrids could hardly forage for parental resources. The poor foraging performance of these hybrids for parental resources was caused not only by the decline in the foraging ability of these hybrids but, more importantly, by the decrease in foraging activity. Interestingly, these hybrids initially showed a high interest in foraging small fishes; however, after the first successful capture, these hybrids had difficulty ingesting fish and spit them out, which led to the subsequent decrease in foraging activity. We designed a series of experiments to explore the mechanism of the fish spitting of these hybrids, excluding the taste and the size of prey, and found that the decrease in their pharyngeal tooth puncture ability may be the reason.

Conclusions

This study was the first to demonstrate that these parents with contrasting ecological niches will produce great postzygotic ecological isolation for parental resources. The poor foraging performance of these hybrids for parental resources is mainly due to the decrease in foraging activity. Interestingly, these hybrids have obvious fish-spitting behaviour, which is a typical example of the incompatibility between intermediate traits and genetic behaviors.

Human-modified landscapes narrow the isotopic niche of neotropical birds

Deforestation and habitat loss resulting from land use changes are some of the utmost anthropogenic impacts that threaten tropical birds in human-modified landscapes (HMLs). The degree of these impacts on birds' diet, habitat use, and ecological niche can be measured by isotopic analysis. We investigated whether the isotopic niche width, food resources, and habitat use of bird trophic guilds differed between HMLs and natural landscapes (NLs) using stable carbon (δ¹³C) and nitrogen isotopes (δ¹⁵N). We analyzed feathers of 851 bird individuals from 28 landscapes in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. We classified landscapes into two groups according to the percentage of forest cover (HMLs ≤ 30%; NLs ≥ 47%), and compared the isotopic niche width and mean values of δ¹³C and δ¹⁵N for each guild between landscape types. The niches of frugivores, insectivores, nectarivores, and omnivores were narrower in HMLs, whereas granivores showed the opposite pattern. In HMLs, nectarivores showed a reduction of 44% in niche width, while granivores presented an expansion of 26%. Individuals in HMLs consumed more resources from agricultural areas (C₄ plants), but almost all guilds showed a preference for forest resources (C₃ plants) in both landscape types, except granivores. Degraded and fragmented landscapes typically present a lower availability of habitat and food resources for many species, which was reflected by the reduction in niche width of birds in HMLs. Therefore, to protect the diversity of guilds in HMLs, landscape management strategies that offer birds more diverse habitats must be implemented in tropical regions.

The role of heterogenous environmental conditions in shaping the spatiotemporal distribution of competing Aedes mosquitoes in Panama: implications for the landscape of arboviral disease transmission

Monitoring the invasion process of the Asian tiger mosquito Aedes albopictus and its interaction with the contender Aedes aegypti, is critical to prevent and control the arthropod-borne viruses (i.e., Arboviruses) they transmit to humans. Generally, the superior ecological competitor Ae. albopictus displaces Ae. aegypti from most geographic areas, with the combining factors of biology and environment influencing the competitive outcome. Nonetheless, detailed studies asserting displacement come largely from sub-tropical areas, with relatively less effort being made in tropical environments, including no comprehensive research about Aedes biological interactions in Mesoamerica. Here, we examine contemporary and historical mosquito surveillance data to assess the role of shifting abiotic conditions in shaping the spatiotemporal distribution of competing Aedes species in the Republic of Panama. In accordance with prior studies, we show that Ae. albopictus has displaced Ae. aegypti under suboptimal wet tropical climate conditions and more vegetated environments within the southwestern Azuero Peninsula. Conversely, in the eastern Azuero Peninsula, Ae. aegypti persists with Ae. albopictus under optimal niche conditions in a dry and more seasonal tropical climate. While species displacement was stable over the course of two years, the presence of both species generally appears to fluctuate in tandem in areas of coexistence. Aedes albopictus was always more frequently found and abundant regardless of location and climatic season. The heterogenous environmental conditions of Panama shape the competitive outcome and micro-geographic distribution of Aedes mosquitoes, with potential consequences for the transmission dynamics of urban and sylvatic zoonotic diseases.

Niche divergence and paleo-distributions of Lutzomyia longipalpis mitochondrial haplogroups (Diptera: Psychodidae)

Lutzomyia longipalpis is a complex of species which has a wide but discontinuous distribution from southeastern Mexico to northern Argentina and Uruguay. To date, eight mitochondrial haplogroups have been identified along its distribution although key environmental tolerances and ecological niche models have been analyzed only at the complex level. The aim of the present study was to analyze whether genetic diversification using three mitochondrial genes of the Lu. longipalpis complex is associated with niche divergence and to explore evolution of distributional projections of all haplogroups between the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM; 21,000 yrs ago) and the present. Current occurrence of all haplogroups was used to develop ecological niche models (ENM) and these were projected in both periods to quantify and identify geographic area shifts. Environmental space was used to estimate niche similarity between major clades and pairwise between individual haplogroups. The two major Lu. longipalpis clades (Mex, CA, Col and Ven vs Arg and Bra) had significantly different environmental space, indicating niche divergence. Environmental space overlap of southern haplogroups was variable, with divergent niche, except between Arg and ArgBra. The most suitable regions for the ArgBra haplogroup were northeastern and southeastern Brazil, and the Gran Chaco region. In contrast, ENM of haplogroups within the northern major clade have significantly similar niche, with highest geographic ENM suitability along both the Caribbean and Pacific coasts. The intensity and coverage of high suitability areas in the LGM decreased for most haplogroups in the present. Integrating ENM and phylogenetic analyses has allowed us to test hypotheses of niche similarity between Lu. longipalpis haplogroups and major clades, and to identify conserved distributional areas of haplogroups since the LGM, with the exception of Arg. Evidence for distributional shifts and overlap of haplogroups is important to analyze Leishmaniasis´ eco-epidemiology and to successfully monitor and control transmission.

How costly are metacercarial infections in a bivalve host? Effects of two trematode species on biochemical performance of cockles

Bivalve stocks have been decreasing in the last decades largely due to emergent diseases and consequent mass mortality episodes. Cerastoderma edule (the edible cockle) is one of the most exploited bivalves in Europe and is among the most common hosts for trematodes, the most prevalent macroparasites in coastal waters but yet poorly studied. Therefore, in the present study, this bivalve species was used as host model to determine if trematode infection exerts a negative effect on bivalve energy metabolism and balance and if the tissues targeted by different trematodes influence the metabolic cost, with physiological and biochemical consequences. Cockles were experimentally infected with two trematode species, Himasthla elongata and Renicola roscovitus, that infect the foot and palps, respectively. Trematode infection exerted a negative effect on the metabolism of C. edule, the second intermediate host, by reduction of oxygen consumption. A different host biochemical response was found depending on trematode species, especially in regard to the level of oxygen consumption decrease and the preferential accumulation of lipids and glycogen. This study represents a step towards the understanding of host-trematode relationships that can be used to better predict potential conservation threats to bivalve populations and to maximize the success of stock and disease management.

A novel enrichment approach for anaerobic digestion of lignocellulosic biomass: Process performance enhancement through an inoculum habitat selection

Inocula enrichment was performed using an innovative habitat-based selection approach to improve wheat straw (WS) anaerobic digestion (AD) efficiency. The procedure was carried out by sequentially re-inoculating the primary microbial community seven times in subsequent anaerobic reactors containing untreated WS. Re-inocula were performed at different re-inoculum times (24, 48, and 96 h) by moving a porous support mimicking a rumen structure from one batch to the next (S-tests) or re-inoculating only the culture medium (C-tests). Highest H₂ production yields were observed after four and five re-inocula (0.08 ± 0.02 NmL h^-1 gVS^-1 and 0.09 ± 0.02 NmL h^-1 gVS^-1) for S-24 and S-48, respectively. For S-96, higher CH₄ yields were observed after the start-up test and sixth re-inoculum (0.05 ± 0.003 NmL h^-1 gVS^-1 and 0.04 ± 0.005 NmL h^-1 gVS^-1, respectively). Accordingly, S-96 showed the highest active Archaea component (7%). C-test microbial communities were dominated by fermenting, hydrogen-producing bacteria and showed lower microbial community diversity than S-tests.

Influence of a road on a population in an ecological niche facing climate change

We introduce a model designed to account for the influence of a line with fast diffusion-such as a road or another transport network-on the dynamics of a population in an ecological niche.This model consists of a system of coupled reaction-diffusion equations set on domains with different dimensions (line / plane). We first show that, in a stationary climate, the presence of the line is always deleterious and can even lead the population to extinction. Next, we consider the case where the niche is subject to a displacement, representing the effect of a climate change. We find that in such case the line with fast diffusion can help the population to persist. We also study several qualitative properties of this system. The analysis is based on a notion of generalized principal eigenvalue developed and studied by the authors (2019).

Microplastics provide new microbial niches in aquatic environments

Microplastics in the biosphere are currently of great environmental concern because of their potential toxicity for aquatic biota and human health and association with pathogenic microbiota. Microplastics can occur in high abundance in all aquatic environments, including oceans, rivers and lakes. Recent findings have highlighted the role of microplastics as important vectors for microorganisms, which can form fully developed biofilms on this artificial substrate. Microplastics therefore provide new microbial niches in the aquatic environment, and the developing biofilms may significantly differ in microbial composition compared to natural free-living or particle-associated microbial populations in the surrounding water. In this article, we discuss the composition and ecological function of the microbial communities found in microplastic biofilms. The potential factors that influence the richness and diversity of such microbial microplastic communities are also evaluated. Microbe-microbe and microbe-substrate interactions in microplastic biofilms have been little studied and are not well understood. Multiomics tools together with morphological, physiological and biochemical analyses should be combined to provide a more comprehensive overview on the ecological role of microplastic biofilms. These new microbial niches have so far unknown consequences for microbial ecology and environmental processes in aquatic ecosystems. More knowledge is required on the microbial community composition of microplastic biofilms and their ecological functions in order to better evaluate consequences for the environment and animal health, including humans, especially since the worldwide abundance of microplastics is predicted to dramatically increase.

Earthworm Pontoscolex corethrurus stimulated soil CO2 emission by enhancing substrate availability rather than changing microbiota community structure

Earthworms may regulate carbon (C) mineralization through a top-down process by altering microbiota community and/or a bottom-up process by providing basic conditions such as mineralizable substrates. However, these two roles performed by earthworms have not been separately quantified. Here, we focused on how the pantropical widespread earthworm, Pontoscolex corethrurus, affected CO₂ emission by changing soil microbiota community and substrate availability in infertile subtropical soils. Two experiments were performed. Firstly, we conducted a 3-year field experiment wherein P. corethrurus population was manipulated by electrical shocking. The two treatments were earthworm reduction (ER) and earthworm addition (EA). Thereby, we tried to understand CO₂ emission pattern through the earthworm-induced changes in soil microbiota community and C-related enzyme activities in field plots. Secondly, a cross-soil inoculation microcosm experiment was conducted to partition the contributions of earthworm-regulated microbiota community and substrate quality to CO₂ emission. The four treatments were 1) autoclaved ER soil + ER microbiota, 2) autoclaved EA soil + ER microbiota, 3) autoclaved ER soil + EA microbiota, and 4) autoclaved EA soil + EA microbiota. We found that, in the field experiment, earthworm addition changed soil microbiota community structure, but increased CO₂ emission despite decreasing soil β-glucosidase activity by 12%. In the cross-inoculation experiment, the β-glucosidase activity and CO₂ emission (1-day incubation) in EA soils was 65.5% and 35.5% greater than that in the ER soils, respectively; the cumulative CO₂ emission (30-day incubation) in EA soils was also significantly greater than that in ER soils. However, no significant effects of microbiota inoculation on soil CO₂ emissions were observed. These results suggested that the earthworm-enhanced substrate availability, rather than the earthworm-induced changing in the microbiota community structure and enzymatic activities, played a key role in C mineralization. This study implies that P. corethrurus occupies a "bottom niche" in infertile subtropical soils.
