Abstract
Deficits in facial identity recognition and its association with poor social functioning are well documented in schizophrenia, but none of these studies have assessed the role of the body in these processes. Recent research in healthy populations shows that the body is also an important source of information in identity recognition, and the current study aimed to thoroughly examine identity recognition from both faces and bodies in schizophrenia. Sixty-five individuals with schizophrenia and forty-nine healthy controls completed three conditions of an identity matching task in which they attempted to match unidentified persons in unedited photos of faces and bodies, edited photos showing faces only, or edited photos showing bodies only. Results revealed global deficits in identity recognition in individuals with schizophrenia (ηp2 = 0.068), but both groups showed better recognition from bodies alone as compared to faces alone (ηp2 = 0.573), suggesting that the ability to extract useful information from bodies when identifying persons may remain partially preserved in schizophrenia. Further research is necessary to understand the relationship between face/body processing, identity recognition, and functional outcomes in individuals with schizophrenia-spectrum disorders.

Abstract
The Probabilistic Reward Task (PRT) is a laboratory-based technique used to objectively quantify responsivity to reward. The PRT was initially designed to identify reinforcement learning deficits in clinical populations and subsequently was reverse-translated for use in preclinical studies with rats and monkeys. In this task, subjects make visual discriminations and asymmetric probabilistic contingencies are arranged such that correct responses to one stimulus (rich) are reinforced more often than correct responses to the other (lean). Numerous studies have demonstrated that healthy subjects reliably develop a response bias toward the richly rewarded stimulus, whereas humans with anhedonia and laboratory animals with a history of chronic stress exhibit a blunted response bias. This is important because anhedonia, the loss of responsivity to previously rewarding stimuli, is a behavioral phenotype that is a cardinal feature of multiple neuropsychiatric conditions and is without approved pharmacotherapeutic options. To aid in addressing this critical treatment gap, this report describes validation of the first PRT designed for mice, which are a commonly utilized species in preclinical research toward neuropsychiatric medications development. Results reveal orderly psychophysical functions in response to asymmetric probabilistic contingencies in mice, with signal detection outcomes comparable to previous PRT findings in humans, rats, and monkeys. Taken together, such robust cross-species continuity in task performance confirms that the mouse is well-positioned to serve in bidirectional research efforts between human and animal laboratories. These efforts may accelerate the development of treatment options for anhedonia in the different neuropsychiatric conditions in which it is prominent.

Abstract
Many interventions aim to protect people from misinformation. Here, we review common measures used to assess their efficacy. Some measures only assess the target behavior (e.g., ability to spot misinformation) and therefore cannot determine whether interventions have overly general effects (e.g., erroneously identifying accurate information as misinformation). Better measures assess discernment, the ability to discriminate target from non-target content. Discernment can determine whether interventions are overly general but is often measured by comparing differences in mean ratings between target and non-target content. We show how this measure is confounded by the configuration of response criteria, leading researchers to incorrectly conclude that an intervention improves discernment. We recommend using measures from signal detection theory, such as the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve, to assess discernment.

Abstract
There is an increasing body of evidence suggesting that there are low-level perceptual processes involved in crossmodal correspondences. In this study, we investigate the involvement of the superior colliculi in three basic crossmodal correspondences: elevation/pitch, lightness/pitch, and size/pitch. Using a psychophysical design, we modulate visual input to the superior colliculus to test whether the superior colliculus is required for behavioural crossmodal congruency effects to manifest in an unspeeded multisensory discrimination task. In the elevation/pitch task, superior colliculus involvement is required for a behavioural elevation/pitch congruency effect to manifest in the task. In the lightness/pitch and size/pitch task, we observed a behavioural elevation/pitch congruency effect regardless of superior colliculus involvement. These results suggest that the elevation/pitch correspondence may be processed differently to other low-level crossmodal correspondences. The implications of a distributed model of crossmodal correspondence processing in the brain are discussed.

Abstract
This paper provides a comprehensive review of the Type B effect (TBE), a phenomenon reflected in the observation that discrimination sensitivity varies with the order of stimuli in comparative judgment tasks, such as the two-alternative forced-choice (2AFC) paradigm. Specifically, when the difference threshold is lower (higher) with the constant standard preceding rather than following the variable comparison, one speaks of a negative (positive) TBE. Importantly, prominent psychophysical difference models such as signal detection theory (Green & Swets, 1966) cannot easily account for the TBE, and are hence challenged by it. The present meta-analysis provides substantial evidence for the TBE across various stimulus attributes, suggesting that the TBE is a general feature of discrimination experiments when standard and comparison are presented successively. Thus, inconsistent with psychophysical difference models, subjective differences between stimuli are not merely a function of their physical differences but rather also depend on their temporal order. From the literature, we identify four classes of potential candidate theories explaining the origin of the TBE, namely (1) differential weighting of the stimulus magnitudes at the two positions (e.g., Hellström, Psychological Research, 39, 345-388 1977), (2) internal reference formation (e.g., Dyjas, Bausenhart, & Ulrich, Attention, Perception, & Psychophysics, 74, 1819-1841 2012), (3) Bayesian updating (e.g., de Jong, Akyürek, & van Rijn, Psychonomic Bulletin and Review, 28, 1183-1190 2021), and (4) biased threshold estimation (García-Pérez & Alcalá-Quintana, Attention, Perception & Psychophysics, 72, 1155-1178 2010). As these models, to some extent, make differential predictions about the direction of the TBE, investigating the respective boundary conditions of positive and negative TBEs might be a valuable perspective for diagnostic future research.

Abstract
In the current investigation, we modified the high Go, low No-Go Sustained Attention to Response Task (SART). Some researchers argue a commission error, an inappropriate response to a No-Go stimulus, in the SART is due to the participant being inattentive, or perceptually decoupled, during stimulus onset. Response delays in the SART reduce commission errors. A response delay may therefore enable a participant who is initially inattentive to recouple their attention in time to appropriately perceive the stimulus and withhold a response to a No-Go stimulus. However, shortening stimulus display duration in the SART should limit the possibility of the participant identifying the stimulus later, if they are initially not attending the stimulus. A response delay should not reduce commission errors if stimulus duration is kept to the minimum duration enabling stimulus recognition. In two experiments, we shortened stimulus onset to offset duration and added response delays of varying lengths. In both experiments, even when stimulus duration was shortened, response delays notably reduced commission errors if the delay was greater than 250 ms. In addition, using the Signal Detection Theory perspective in which errors of commission in the SART are due to a lenient response bias-trigger happiness, we predicted that response delays would result in a shift to a more conservative response bias in both experiments. These predictions were verified. The errors of commission in the SART may not be a measures of conscious awareness per se, but instead indicative of the level of participant trigger happiness-a lenient response bias.

Abstract
pyWitness is a python toolkit for recognition memory experiments, with a focus on eyewitness identification (ID) data analysis and model fitting. The current practice is for researchers to use different statistical packages to analyze a single dataset. pyWitness streamlines the process. In addition to conducting key data analyses (e.g., receiver operating characteristic analysis, confidence accuracy characteristic analysis), statistical comparisons, signal-detection-based model fits, simulated data generation, and power analyses are also possible. We describe the package implementation and provide detailed instructions and tutorials with datasets so that users can follow. There is also an online manual that is regularly updated. We developed pyWitness to be user-friendly, reduce human interaction with pre-processing and processing of data and model fits, and produce publication-ready plots. All pyWitness features align with open science practices, such that the algorithms, fits, and methods are reproducible and documented. While pyWitness is a python toolkit, it can also be used from R for users more accustomed to this environment.

Abstract
The sense of body ownership is the feeling that one's body belongs to oneself. To study body ownership, researchers use bodily illusions, such as the rubber hand illusion (RHI), which involves experiencing a visible rubber hand as part of one's body when the rubber hand is stroked simultaneously with the hidden real hand. The RHI is based on a combination of vision, touch, and proprioceptive information following the principles of multisensory integration. It has been posited that texture incongruence between rubber hand and real hand weakens the RHI, but the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. To investigate this, we recently developed a novel psychophysical RHI paradigm. Based on fitting psychometric functions, we discovered the RHI resulted in shifts in the point of subjective equality when the rubber hand and the real hand were stroked with matching materials. We analysed these datasets further by using signal detection theory analysis, which distinguishes between the participants' sensitivity to visuotactile stimulation and the associated perceptual bias. We found that texture incongruence influences the RHI's perceptual bias but not its sensitivity to visuotactile stimulation. We observed that the texture congruence bias effect was the strongest in shorter visuotactile asynchronies (50-100 ms) and weaker in longer asynchronies (200 ms). These results suggest texture-related perceptual bias is most prominent when the illusion's sensitivity is at its lowest. Our findings shed light on the intricate interactions between top-down and bottom-up processes in body ownership, the links between body ownership and multisensory integration, and the impact of texture congruence on the RHI.

Abstract
In the current investigation, we modified the high Go, low No-Go Sustained Attention to Response Task (SART) by replacing the single response on Go trials with a dual response to increase response uncertainty. In three experiments, a total of 80 participants completed either the original SART with no response uncertainty regarding the Go stimuli, or versions of the dual response SART in which response probabilities for the two possible responses to the Go stimuli varied from 0.9-0.1, 0.7-0.3, to 0.5-0.5. This resulted in a scale of increasing response uncertainty based on information theory to the Go stimuli. The probability of No-Go withhold stimuli was kept.11 in all experiments. Using the Signal Detection Theory perspective proposed by Bedi et al. (Psychological Research: 1-10, 2022), we predicted that increasing response uncertainty would result in a conservative response bias shift, noted by decreased errors of commission and slower response times to both Go and No-Go stimuli. These predictions were verified. The errors of commission in the SART may not be a measures of conscious awareness per se, but instead indicative of the level of participant trigger happiness-the willingness to respond quickly.

Abstract
Understanding human oral/taste sensitivity to long-chain non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) with varying physicochemical properties is essential to reducing the intake of fats and altering the intake composition. This study investigated the differences in human taste sensitivity to two NEFA: oleic acid and linoleic acid. Twenty-four female subjects were divided into two equal sensitivity groups, and they performed discrimination tests for both fatty acids against bottled water using either the triangle or the DR A-Not A test. To achieve an accurate measurement of NEFA sensitivity, the stimulus was carefully prepared, avoiding additives that could interfere with the binding of fatty acids to receptors. Stimuli concentrations were selected to be within the lowest range (9.9 to 177.3 μM) evaluated in previous research. Through a systematic stimulus control process, this study confirmed that greater sensitivity was exhibited to linoleic acid than oleic acid, resulting in better discrimination than previous studies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND People diagnosed with schizophrenia share underlying cognitive deficits in self-monitoring (i.e., identifying the source of self-generated behaviours). This study aimed to investigate whether self-monitoring deficits in schizophrenia are due to a cognitive response bias towards external perceptions or a reduced discriminability of imagined and performed actions. We hypothesised that self-monitoring deficits in individuals with schizophrenia are primarily driven by bottom-up processes, leading to a compromised ability to discriminate between internally generated behaviours as opposed to a cognitive response bias towards performed actions. METHODS We recruited 333 participants, including 192 with schizophrenia and 141 healthy controls. As part of the Action-Memory Task, participants were instructed to either imagine or physically perform 36 different actions, half of which were presented as pictograms and half as text. In the test phase, participants indicated whether they had performed or imagined each action, whether it appeared in text or pictogram, or whether it was a new action. Using Signal Detection Theory, the study primarily analysed group differences in discriminability and response-bias. RESULTS Participants with schizophrenia made significantly more self-monitoring errors than healthy controls. This was primarily due to significantly lower sensitivity, but not a response bias. Whereas recognition memory errors were driven by both lower sensitivity and a response bias. CONCLUSIONS The findings suggest that self-monitoring in schizophrenia was specifically impaired by a compromised discriminability of imagined and performed events and an inability to appropriately compensate by adjusting decision-thresholds. Implications on the role of bottom-up and top-down cognitive mechanisms are discussed.

Abstract
Batesian mimicry is a strategy in which palatable prey species (mimic-species) resemble unpalatable prey species with aposematism (model-species). Theoretical studies on Batesian mimicry have been conducted in terms of their evolutionary significance and ecological consequences. However, despite the importance of eco-evolutionary feedback, the evolution and population dynamics of mimicry complex have long been explored separately. Previous studies on the dynamics of mimicry complex have proposed the possibility of the extinction of unpalatable species due to high predation by predators confusing palatable and unpalatable species. If the abundance of palatable species was large in comparison with unpalatable species, predation pressure on both unpalatable and palatable species became severe, resulting in the extinction of the unpalatable species. We hypothesized that palatable species evolved not to be similar to unpalatable species when unpalatable species became rare, because this situation is no longer advantageous for palatable species to mimic unpalatable species. Here, we constructed the eco-evolutionary dynamics of unpalatable and palatable species, and demonstrated that the evolutionary process of palatable species, which has been overlooked in previous theoretical studies, could rescue the unpalatable species from extinction. We modeled predators' foraging decisions based on signal detection theory. We assumed that palatable species evolve in a trait space, in which there are separate adaptive peaks on either side of an adaptive valley for mimicry and cryptic phenotypes. Then, we derived the stability conditions of the equilibria. As a result, the evolution of a cryptic phenotype in palatable species was driven when unpalatable species was rare, which mitigated predation pressure on unpalatable species through the reduction in the probability to be attacked. This could work to rescue unpalatable species from extinction.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Noisy thoughts or perceptions are characteristics of psychosis (PSY) and, they are deeply related to source monitoring (SM) - the ability to discriminate the origin of internal/external experiences. METHODS This MOOSE, PRISMA-compliant meta-analysis compared SM performances in PSY compared to healthy controls (HC) focusing on signal-to-noise discrimination in order to: i) test whether neuroimaging procedures (fMRI/EEG) might be a group-specific source of noise for SM; ii) compare error- and accuracy-based indexes; iii) to meta-analyze signal-detection measures (i.e., discrimination index and response bias); iv) to determine the best index capturing SM deficits in psychosis. We conducted a 3-level meta-analysis for each aim to estimate pooled effect-sizes (Cohen's d). SM type, source discrimination and stimulus modality were used as meta-regressors. Heterogeneity (I2), publication bias (Egger's test) and multiple comparisons (Bonferroni correction) were considered. RESULTS Sixteen neuroimaging, 44 error/accuracy-based behavioral and 7 signal-detection trials were included (2297 PSY, age range = 18.78-52.6; 1745 HC, age range = 21.1-53.3). The noise generated by neuroimaging procedures slightly influenced error, but not accuracy. Accuracy-based (d = -0.83), but not error-based, indexes showed significant and large SM impairments in PSY compared to HC. Overall SM performance differences between PSY and HC were larger in discrimination index (d = -0.65) and accuracy (d = -0.61), followed by response bias (d = -0.59, ns) and error-based (d = 0.35) indexes. CONCLUSION Although both accuracy and discrimination indexes differentiate patients with PSY from HC, discrimination index is more reliable and may better capture the bi-directional nature of the internal/external source confusion.

Abstract
Intelligent agents need to understand how they can change the world, and how they cannot change it, in order to make rational decisions for their forthcoming actions, and to adapt to their current environment. Previous research on the sense of agency, based largely on subjective ratings, failed to dissociate the sensitivity of sense of agency (i.e., the extent to which individual sense of agency tracks actual instrumental control over external events) from judgment criteria (i.e., the extent to which individuals self-attribute agency independent of their actual influence over external events). Furthermore, few studies have examined whether individuals have metacognitive access to the internal processes underlying the sense of agency. We developed a novel two-alternative-forced choice (2FAC) control detection task, in which participants identified which of two visual objects was more strongly controlled by their voluntary movement. The actual level of control over the target object was manipulated by adjusting the proportion of its motion that was driven by the participant's movement, compared to the proportion driven by a pre-recorded movement by another agent, using a staircase to hold 2AFC control detection accuracy at 70%. Participants identified which of the two visual objects they controlled, and also made a binary confidence judgment regarding their control detection judgment. We calculated a bias-free measure of first-order sensitivity (d') for detection control at any given level of participant's own movement. The proportion of pre-recorded movements determined by the stairecase could then be used as an index of control detection ability. We identified two distinct processes underlying first-order detection of control: one based on instantaneous sensory predictions for the current movement, and one based on detection of a regular motor-visual relation across a series of movements. Further, we found large individual differences across 40 particpants in metacognitive sensitivity (meta-d') even though first-order sensitivity of control detection was well controlled. Using structural equation modelling (SEM), we showed that metacognition was negatively correlated with the predictive process component of detection of control. This result is inconsistent with previous hypotheses that detection of control relies on metacognitive monitoring of a predictive circuit. Instead, it suggests that predictive mechanisms that compute sense of agency may operate unconsciously.

Abstract
When human monitors are required to detect infrequent signals among noise, they typically exhibit a decline in correct detections over time. Researchers have attributed this vigilance decrement to three alternative mechanisms: shifts in response bias, losses of sensitivity, and attentional lapses. The current study examined the extent to which changes in these mechanisms contributed to the vigilance decrement in an online monitoring task. Participants in two experiments (N = 102, N = 192) completed an online signal detection task, judging whether the separation between two probes each trial exceeded a criterion value. Separation was varied across trials and data were fit with logistic psychometric curves using Bayesian hierarchical parameter estimation. Parameters representing sensitivity, response bias, attentional lapse rate, and guess rate were compared across the first and last 4 minutes of the vigil. Data gave decisive evidence of conservative bias shifts, an increased attentional lapse rate, and a decreased positive guess rate over time on task, but no strong evidence for or against an effect of sensitivity. Sensitivity decrements appear less robust than criterion shifts or attention lapses as causes of the vigilance loss.

Abstract
Many studies claim that visual regularities can be learned unconsciously and without explicit awareness. For example in the contextual cueing paradigm, studies often make claims using a standard reasoning based on two results: (1) a reliable response time (RT) difference between repeated vs. new stimulus displays and (2) a close-to-chance sensitivity when participants are asked to explicitly recognize repeated stimulus displays. From this pattern of results, studies routinely conclude that the sensitivity of RT responses is higher than that of explicit responses-an empirical situation we call Indirect Task Advantage (ITA). Many studies further infer from an ITA that RT effects were driven by a form of recognition that exceeds explicit memory: implicit recognition. However, this reasoning is flawed because the sensitivity underlying RT effects is never computed. To properly establish a difference, a sensitivity comparison is required. We apply this sensitivity comparison in a reanalysis of 20 contextual cueing studies showing that not a single study provides consistent evidence for ITAs. Responding to recent correlation-based arguments, we also demonstrate the absence of evidence for ITAs at the level of individual participants. This lack of ITAs has serious consequences for the field: If RT effects can be fully explained by weak but above-chance explicit recognition sensitivity, what is the empirical content of the label "implicit"? Thus, theoretical discussions in this paradigm-and likely in other paradigms using this standard reasoning-require serious reassessment because the current data from contextual cueing studies is insufficient to consider recognition as implicit.

Abstract
A large body of previous research has shown that emotional stimuli have an advantage in a wide variety of cognitive processes. This was mainly observed in visual search and working memory tasks. Emotionally charged objects draw and hold attention, are remembered better, and interfere more with the completion of the primary task than neutral ones. Therefore, it seems reasonable to assume that emotional stimuli also greatly affect sustained attention and vigilance decrement. In the present research, we investigated whether emotional stimuli demand more attentional resources than neutral ones in a dual-task paradigm. We adopted the abbreviated semantic discrimination vigilance task and measured participants' (N = 49) performance in a single-task and two dual-task settings. In the dual-task conditions, the visual semantic vigilance paradigm was combined with an auditory word recall task (with neutral or emotional stimuli). We found reduced vigilance and improved word recall performance in the emotional dual-task condition compared to the neutral dual-task and single-task conditions. The reduced performance was apparent throughout the task, while in the neutral conditions, participants' performance first increased and then dropped as time progressed. To conclude, our results indicate that emotional stimuli not only have an advantage in cognitive processing but also demand more attentional resources continuously while it is present compared to neutral stimuli. These results are consistent with the emotionality effect theory and evolutionary accounts of the neural circuits underlying motivated behaviors associated with critical survival needs.

Abstract
Decision-making is an important component in the perception-action coupling required for athletes to achieve fine performance. Signal detection theory (SDT) provides a means of quantifying athletes' decision-making processes, based on their ability to discriminate between different types of stimuli (sensitivity) and the locations of their response criteria along a decision axis in a given situation. Studies have shown differences in these two indices between athletes and less-experienced counterparts, although these studies were limited to unidimensional decision-making problems. In the present study, SDT analysis was applied to two-dimensional decision-making by volleyball players regarding their opponents' attacks, using a four-alternative forced-choice task combining judgments of the type (spike or tip) and direction (cross-court or down-the-line) of attacks. Furthermore, a temporal occlusion task was used to reveal the timecourses of changes in sensitivity and the location of response criteria relating to judgments of attack type and direction. There were three groups of participants, eight top-league players, ten collegiate players, and ten novices. The results showed clear effects of expertise and distinct timecourses for the two types of judgment. For the attack type judgments, the sensitivities of the top-league players were relatively low at the early occlusion points, and their response criteria were biased toward judging attacking actions as spikes. At the late occlusion points, their sensitivity peaked, and there was no bias in their response criteria. For the directional judgments, the sensitivity of the three groups improved as the occlusion point advanced, while their response criteria tended to become more similar, which was not the case for the attack type judgments. These results are discussed together with previous studies of volleyball players' decision-making and judgments regarding deceptive actions in sports.

Abstract
Bodily illusions have fascinated humankind for centuries, and researchers have studied them to learn about the perceptual and neural processes that underpin multisensory channels of bodily awareness. The influential rubber hand illusion (RHI) has been used to study changes in the sense of body ownership - that is, how a limb is perceived to belong to one's body, which is a fundamental building block in many theories of bodily awareness, self-consciousness, embodiment, and self-representation. However, the methods used to quantify perceptual changes in bodily illusions, including the RHI, have mainly relied on subjective questionnaires and rating scales, and the degree to which such illusory sensations depend on sensory information processing has been difficult to test directly. Here, we introduce a signal detection theory (SDT) framework to study the sense of body ownership in the RHI. We provide evidence that the illusion is associated with changes in body ownership sensitivity that depend on the information carried in the degree of asynchrony of correlated visual and tactile signals, as well as with perceptual bias and sensitivity that reflect the distance between the rubber hand and the participant's body. We found that the illusion's sensitivity to asynchrony is remarkably precise; even a 50 ms visuotactile delay significantly affected body ownership information processing. Our findings conclusively link changes in a complex bodily experience such as body ownership to basic sensory information processing and provide a proof of concept that SDT can be used to study bodily illusions.

Abstract
Relying on existing literature to identify suitable techniques for characterizing individual differences presents practical and methodological challenges. These challenges include the frequent absence of detailed descriptions of raw data, which hinders the assessment of analysis appropriateness, as well as the exclusion of data points deemed outliers, or the reliance on comparing only extreme groups by categorizing continuous variables into upper and lower quartiles. Despite the availability of algorithmic modeling in standard statistical software, investigations into individual differences predominantly focus on factor analysis and parametric tests. To address these limitations, this application-oriented study proposes a comprehensive approach that leverages behavioral responses through the use of signal detection theory and clustering techniques. Unlike conventional methods, signal detection theory considers both sensitivity and bias, offering insights into the intricate interplay between perceptual ability and decision-making processes. On the other hand, clustering techniques enable the identification and classification of distinct patterns within the dataset, allowing for the detection of singular behaviors that form the foundation of individual differences. In a broader framework, these combined approaches prove particularly advantageous when analyzing large and heterogeneous datasets provided by data archive platforms. By applying these techniques more widely, our understanding of the cognitive and behavioral processes underlying learning can be expedited and enhanced.

Abstract
Accumulating psychophysical evidence suggests substantial individual variability in oral/taste sensitivity to non-esterified, long-chain fatty acids (NEFA), which is commonly referred to as fat taste or oleogustus. Recent studies have sought to determine its associations with human factors such as body mass index (BMI) and food preferences, as it has been claimed that excessive fat consumption is related to several health conditions, including obesity. Yet, the findings are controversial. On the other hand, it has been noted that considerable variability also occurs based on the methodology used to measure the fatty acid taste. Specifically, learning effects have been observed over repeated measurements of the detection threshold of NEFA, yet there has been no methodology available to take into account these learning effects. Accordingly, in the present study, a novel methodology using a descending-block dual reminder A-Not A (DR A-Not A) method with a warm-up has been proposed to measure the NEFA detection threshold based on the signal detection theory and considering NEFA taste learning effects over repeated sessions. Homogeneous subjects (young adult Korean females within the normal BMI range, non-vegetarians) were randomized to either the novel descending-block DR A-Not A method or ascending triangle method that is commonly used for fat perception studies. Pure oleic acid emulsions were used as fat taste stimuli to be discriminated from pure mineral water. Each subject completed 14 repeated visits. For the ascending triangle method, 14 thresholds were determined using a stopping rule, while for the novel method, 7 thresholds were determined each per two consecutive days, using a criterion of a lower limit of 50% confidence interval of d' = 0.5, considering the practical aspects of taste studies in food sensory science. Based on the group median results of the last two visits, the variability of the detection thresholds was reduced using the novel descending-block DR A-Not A method due to better learning effects over repeated sessions. This shows the potential of the descending-block DR A-Not A threshold method for further studies on oral/taste sensitivity to fat.

Abstract
Our perceptions and decisions are not always objectively correct as they are featured by a bias related to our self. What are the behavioral, neural, and computational mechanisms of such cognitive bias? Addressing this yet unresolved question, we here investigate whether the cognitive bias is related to temporal integration and segregation as mediated by the brain's Intrinsic neural timescales (INT). Using Signal Detection Theory (SDT), we operationalize the cognitive bias by the Criterion C as distinguished from the sensitivity index d'. This was probed in a self-task based on morphed self- and other faces. Behavioral data demonstrate clear cognitive bias, i.e., Criterion C. That was related to the EEG-based INT as measured by the autocorrelation window (ACW) in especially the transmodal regions dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC) and default-mode network (DMN) as distinct from unimodal visual cortex. Finally, simulation of the same paradigm in a large-scale network model shows high degrees of temporal integration of temporally distinct inputs in CMS/DMN and dlPFC while temporal segregation predominates in visual cortex. Together, we demonstrate a key role of INT-based temporal integration in CMS/DMN and dlPFC including its relation to the brain's uni-transmodal topographical organization in mediating the cognitive bias of our self.

Abstract
Currently, numerous attempts are made to increase the perceived saltiness of food without adding more NaCl. In the present study, a method based on a reminder design and signal detection theory was used to evaluate the effects of cheddar cheese odor, meat odor, and monosodium glutamate (MSG) on the perceived saltiness and preference of three intensities of NaCl through the d' and R-Index. A solution of 2 g/L NaCl combined with odorless air was the blind reference product, which was also tested as one of the test products. The reference sample was compared to the target samples. A total of twelve right-handed subjects (19-40 years; body mass index BMI 21-32; 7 females and 5 males) performed sensory difference tasks across six days. Cheddar cheese odor was more effective in increasing the perceived saltiness and preference of NaCl solutions than meat odor. When MSG was added to the NaCl solutions, the perceived saltiness and preference were increased. Overall, the signal detection reminder method could provide a comprehensive psychophysical framework to measure saltiness perception and preference of odor-taste-taste interactions using d' (a distance measure) and R-index (an area measure).

Abstract
Recently, it has been suggested that the mnemonic information that underlies recognition decisions changes when participants are asked to indicate whether a test stimulus is new rather than old (Brainerd et al., 2021, Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning Memory, and Cognition, advance online publication). However, some observations that have been interpreted as evidence for this assertion need not be due to mnemonic changes, but may instead be the result of conservative response strategies if the possibility of asymmetric receiver operating characteristics (ROCs) is taken into account. Conversely, recent findings in support of asymmetric ROCs rely on the assumption that the mnemonic information accessed by the decision-maker does not depend on whether an old or a new item is considered to be the target Kellen et al. (2021, Psychological Review 128[6], 1022-1050). Here, we aim to clarify whether there is such a difference in accessibility of mnemonic information by applying signal detection theory. To this end, we used two versions of a simultaneous detection and identification task in which we presented participants with two test stimuli at a time. In one version, the old item was the target; in the other, the new item was the target. This allowed us to assess differences in mnemonic information retrieved in the two tasks while taking possible ROC asymmetry into account. Results clearly indicate that there is indeed a difference in the accessibility of mnemonic information as postulated by (Brainerd et al., 2021, Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning Memory, and Cognition, advance online publication).

Abstract
Fingerprint comparisons are extended in time due to the fine details (minutiae) that necessitate multiple eye fixations throughout the comparison. How is evidence accumulated across these multiple regions? The present work measures decisions at multiple points during a comparison to address how feature diagnosticity and image clarity play a role in evidence accumulation. We find that evidence is accumulated at a constant rate over time, with evidence for identification and exclusion accumulated at similar rates. Manipulations of image diagnosticity and image clarity demonstrate two exceptions to this constant rate: Highly diagnostic evidence followed by weak evidence tends to lose the initial benefits of the strong start, and low image clarity at the start of the comparison can be overcome with high image clarity at the end of the comparison. The results suggest that examiners tend to treat each region fairly independently (as demonstrated by linear evidence accumulation), with only weak evidence for hysteresis effects that tend to fade as additional regions are presented. Data from transition probability matrices support an incremental evidence accumulation account, with very little evidence for rapid "aha" moments even for exclusion decisions. The results are consistent with a model in which each fixated region contributes an independent unit of evidence, and these accumulate to form an eventual decision. Fingerprint comparisons do not seem to depend on which regions are selected first, and thus examiners need not worry about finding the most diagnostic region first, but instead focus on conducting a complete analysis of the latent print.

Abstract
Expecting drivers to learn and remember numerous limitations may not be a practical approach to training for advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), particularly for self-initiated training in the absence of formal training requirements. One alternative is focusing on the importance of the driver remaining engaged in the driving task (responsibility-focused approach). We investigated the effects of two training videos (responsibility-focused and limitation-focused) on reliance intention, trust, and ADAS knowledge. In a remote study, participants (N = 61) watched dashcam clips (8 that require takeover, 8 no takeover) and for each clip, they reported whether they would manually intervene and their trust in ADAS (assessing situational reliance intention and trust, respectively). Participants also completed a questionnaire that included items measuring ADAS knowledge. Responses were collected at three stages: pre-training, post-training, and a follow-up session (minimum four weeks later). There were no significant differences between approaches in terms of knowledge of situations in which ADAS would not work, appropriate situational reliance intention, or trust in takeover scenarios. Compared to the responsibility-focused video, the limitation-focused video was associated with lower trust in no takeover scenarios and negative bias at post-training (i.e., bias towards reporting that ADAS would not work for the knowledge questionnaire and bias towards taking manual control/not using ADAS for the dashcam clips). Given the limited differences between training approaches and potential drawbacks of the limitation-focused approach, our results suggest that the responsibility-focused training approach is worth exploring further.

Abstract
We argue that critical areas of memory research rely on problematic measurement practices and provide concrete suggestions to improve the situation. In particular, we highlight the prevalence of memory studies that use tasks (like the "old/new" task: "have you seen this item before? yes/no") where quantifying performance is deeply dependent on counterfactual reasoning that depends on the (unknowable) distribution of underlying memory signals. As a result of this difficulty, different literatures in memory research (e.g., visual working memory, eyewitness identification, picture memory, etc.) have settled on a variety of fundamentally different metrics to get performance measures from such tasks (e.g., A', corrected hit rate, percent correct, d', diagnosticity ratios, K values, etc.), even though these metrics make different, contradictory assumptions about the distribution of latent memory signals, and even though all of their assumptions are frequently incorrect. We suggest that in order for the psychology and neuroscience of memory to become a more cumulative, theory-driven science, more attention must be given to measurement issues. We make a concrete suggestion: The default memory task for those simply interested in performance should change from old/new ("did you see this item'?") to two-alternative forced-choice ("which of these two items did you see?"). In situations where old/new variants are preferred (e.g., eyewitness identification; theoretical investigations of the nature of memory signals), receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis should be performed rather than a binary old/new task.

Abstract
We assess whether deep convolutional networks (DCN) can account for a most fundamental property of human vision: detection/discrimination of elementary image elements (bars) at different contrast levels. The human visual process can be characterized to varying degrees of "depth," ranging from percentage of correct detection to detailed tuning and operating characteristics of the underlying perceptual mechanism. We challenge deep networks with the same stimuli/tasks used with human observers and apply equivalent characterization of the stimulus-response coupling. In general, we find that popular DCN architectures do not account for signature properties of the human process. For shallow depth of characterization, some variants of network-architecture/training-protocol produce human-like trends; however, more articulate empirical descriptors expose glaring discrepancies. Networks can be coaxed into learning those richer descriptors by shadowing a human surrogate in the form of a tailored circuit perturbed by unstructured input, thus ruling out the possibility that human-model misalignment in standard protocols may be attributable to insufficient representational power. These results urge caution in assessing whether neural networks do or do not capture human behavior: ultimately, our ability to assess "success" in this area can only be as good as afforded by the depth of behavioral characterization against which the network is evaluated. We propose a novel set of metrics/protocols that impose stringent constraints on the evaluation of DCN behavior as an adequate approximation to biological processes.

Abstract
Error patterns of facial emotion recognition (FER) indicate how individuals misinterpret others' facial expressions, which helps clinicians to manage related deficits. However, previous investigations are limited and may have been biased due to methodological issues (e.g., no consideration of response bias). This study aimed to propose a detectability index (d') for adjusting response bias and examine the error patterns of FER in patients with schizophrenia. Responses to 168 photos showing seven basic emotions, obtained from 351 patients with schizophrenia and 101 healthy adults, were extracted from a previous study. The differences in the d's between the two groups (Δd') were calculated to examine the error patterns of FER among the seven emotions. The findings were generally overlapped with those identified by the traditional confusion matrix. Four error patterns were found. First, the patients were insensitive to some negative emotions (i.e., sadness [Δd' = 0.83] and fear [Δd' = 0.72]). Second, they misrecognized happy faces as showing negative emotions (e.g., disgust [Δd' = 0.43] and sadness [Δd' = 0.37]). Third, they misinterpreted surprised faces as all the other emotions (Δd' = 0.41-0.87), except neutral. Fourth, they confused some negative emotions (e.g., misrecognizing fear as anger [Δd' = 0.87]). Our findings suggest that patients with schizophrenia show four error patterns of FER compared to healthy adults. Accordingly, interventions could be selected to improve their sensitivity to faces with negative emotions, differentiation of faces among positive and negative emotions, understanding of surprised faces, and discrimination of faces with negative emotions.

Abstract
Signal detection theory gives a framework for determining how well participants can discriminate between two types of stimuli. This article first examines similarities and differences of forced-choice and A-Not A designs (also known as the yes-no or one-interval). Then it focuses on the latter, in which participants have to classify stimuli, presented to them one at a time, as belonging to one of two possible response categories. The A-Not A task can be, on a first level, replicated or non-replicated, and the sub-design for each can be, on a second level, either a monadic, a mixed, or a paired design. These combinations are explained, and the present article then focuses on the both the non-replicated and replicated paired A-Not A task. Data structure, descriptive statistics, inference statistics, and effect sizes are explained in general and based on example data (Düvel et al., 2020). Documents for the data analysis are given in an extensive online supplement. Furthermore, the important question of statistical power and required sample size is addressed, and several means for the calculation are explained. The authors suggest a standardized procedure for planning, conducting, and evaluating a study employing an A-Not A design.

Abstract
Levi et al. (2021) critique the concept of everyday amnesia (high confident misses) by arguing that these are simply due to criterion shifts within a signal detection framework. We agree that signal detection figures can be drawn to conceptualize the results, but we argue such efforts merely provide a re-description of the phenomenon without explaining it. For that, one would need a process theory. Signal detection theory represents an elegant framework for conceiving of issues in decision making, but not for explaining mechanisms underlying them. A signal detection figure can be created for any possible recognition memory result; any pair of hit rates and false alarm rates (and hence miss rates and correct rejection rates) is amenable to such a depiction. If we were to cast the issue we raised in terms of signal detection theory, we might ask: Why do some subjects place their most liberal criterion in such a way that they miss, with high confidence, items that they recently studied? Signal detection theory provides no answer.

Abstract
In the phishing email literature, recent researchers have given much attention to individual differences in phishing susceptibility from the perspective of the Big Five personality traits. Although the effectiveness and advantages of the phishing susceptibility measures in the signal detection theory (SDT) framework have been verified, the cognitive mechanisms that lead to individual differences in these measures remain unknown. The current study proposed and examined a theoretical path model to explore how the Big Five personality traits, related knowledge and experience and the cognitive processing of emails (i.e., mail elaboration) influence users' susceptibility to phishing emails. A sample of 414 Chinese participants completed the 44-item Big Five Personality Inventory (BFI-44), Mail Elaboration Scale (MES), Web Experience Questionnaire, Experience with Electronic Mail Scale, Knowledge and Technical Background Test and a demographic questionnaire. The phishing susceptibility measures were calculated after the participants finished an email legitimacy task in a role-playing scenario. The results showed that the general profile of the "victim personality" included low conscientiousness, low openness and high neuroticism, and Internet experience and computer and web knowledge played an important role. All of these factors have significant indirect effects on phishing susceptibility by influencing mail elaboration. Moreover, the probabilities of checking for further information or deleting the email reflect the sensitivity of email judgment. These findings reveal the mediating role of cognitive processing between individual factors and phishing susceptibility. The theoretical implications of this study for the phishing susceptibility literature and its applications to phishing risk interventions or training programs are discussed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In the course of the ongoing transition of electric energy systems, transmission corridors are often upgraded to higher voltages and other technologies leading to another quality of human exposure. The study aims to determine human detection thresholds for direct current (DC), alternating current (AC), and hybrid electric fields (various DC; constant AC). METHODS A total of 203 participants were exposed to DC, AC, and hybrid electric fields (EFs) in a highly specialized whole-body exposure laboratory using a double-blind experimental setting. Additionally, the participants were exposed to ion currents in part of the DC and hybrid sessions. To investigate environmental influences, relative humidity was changed in two subgroups during EF perception. Methods derived from the signal detection theory and the adaptive staircase procedure based on the single interval adjustment matrix were used to assess individual sensitivity and detection thresholds, respectively. RESULTS The results indicated that detection thresholds of hybrid EF were lower compared to single EF presentation of DC or AC. Ion current exposure enhanced EF perception. High relative humidity facilitated DC EF perception, whereas low relative humidity reinforced the perception of AC EFs. CONCLUSIONS With this systematic investigation of human perception of DC, AC, and hybrid EFs, detection thresholds were provided, which can help improve the construction processes of energy transmission systems and the prevention of unwanted sensory perception by contributing to the determination of limit values.

Abstract
We raise the hypothesis that adult picky eating behavior may be related to subjects' tendency to impute structure in random stimuli. We test said hypothesis in an empirical study which operationalizes subjects' objective abilities and subjective decision criteria in discriminating between correlated and independent signals in terms of the classic Signal Detection Theory. A robust regularized Bayesian multiple regression analysis indicates that liberal subjective decision criteria which indicate a tendency to over-impute structure when trying to discriminate between random and correlated patterns are associated with elevated scores of picky eating while controlling for several other variables. The predictive power of our discriminating procedure appears comparable to that of related eating dispositions. Our results strongly suggest that cognitive factors might indeed have substantial and meaningful relationships with certain eating behaviors.

Abstract
The rise of computational modeling in the past decade has led to a substantial increase in the number of papers that report parameter estimates of computational cognitive models. A common application of computational cognitive models is to quantify individual differences in behavior by estimating how these are expressed in differences in parameters. For these inferences to hold, models need to be identified, meaning that one set of parameters is most likely, given the behavior under consideration. For many models, model identification can be achieved up to a scaling constraint, which means that under the assumption that one parameter has a specific value, all remaining parameters are identified. In the current note, we argue that this scaling constraint implies a strong assumption about the cognitive process that the model is intended to explain, and warn against an overinterpretation of the associative relations found in this way. We will illustrate these points using signal detection theory, reinforcement learning models, and the linear ballistic accumulator model, and provide suggestions for a clearer interpretation of modeling results.

Abstract
We investigated the eight decision rules for a same-different task, as summarized in Petrov (Psychonomic Bulletin & Review, 16(6), 1011-1025, 2009). These rules, including the differencing (DF) rule and the optimal independence rule, are all based on the standard model in signal detection theory. Each rule receives two stimulus values as inputs and uses one or two decision criteria. We proved that the false alarm rate p(F) ≤ 1/2 for four of the rules. We also conducted a same-different rating experiment on motion discrimination (n = 54), with 4∘ or 8∘ directional difference. We found that the human receiver operating characteristic (ROC) spanned its full range [0,1] in p(F), thus rejecting these four rules. The slope of the human Z-ROC was also < 1, further confirming that the independence rule was not used. We subsequently fitted in the four-dimensional (pAA, pAB, pBA, pBB) space the human data to the remaining four rules-DF and likelihood ratio rules, each with one or two criteria, where pXY = p(responding "different" given stimulus sequence XY). We found that, using residual distribution analysis, only the two criteria DF rule (DF2) could account for the human data.

Abstract
Accounts of working memory based on independent item representations may overlook a possible contribution of ensemble statistics, higher-order regularities of a scene such as the mean or variance of a visual attribute. Here we used change detection tasks to investigate the hypothesis that observers store ensemble statistics in working memory and use them to detect changes in the visual environment. We controlled changes to the ensemble mean or variance between memory and test displays across six experiments. We made specific predictions of observers' sensitivity using an optimal summation model that integrates evidence across separate items but does not detect changes in ensemble statistics. We found strong evidence that observers outperformed this model, but only when task difficulty was high, and only for changes in stimulus variance. Under these conditions, we estimated that the variance of items contributed to change detection sensitivity more strongly than any individual item in this case. In contrast, however, we found strong evidence against the hypothesis that the average feature value is stored in working memory: when the mean of memoranda changed, sensitivity did not differ from the optimal summation model, which was blind to the ensemble mean, in five out of six experiments. Our results reveal that change detection is primarily limited by uncertainty in the memory of individual features, but that memory for the variance of items can facilitate detection under a limited set of conditions that involve relatively high working memory demands.

Abstract
Understanding what drivers know about state-of-the-art advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), like adaptive cruise control (ACC) and lane keeping assistance (LKA) is important because such knowledge can influence trust in and reliance on the automation. We surveyed ADAS owners (N = 102) and non-owners (N = 262), with the primary objective of assessing knowledge and trust of ACC and LKA, and investigating the relationship between knowledge and trust among drivers who have not received special training. The survey contained demographic questions, ACC and LKA knowledge questionnaires (assessing knowledge of capabilities and limitations commonly found in owner's manuals), and ACC and LKA trust ratings. From the knowledge questionnaires, sensitivity (i.e., knowledge of the true capabilities of ACC and LKA) and response bias were assessed and used to predict trust. Results showed that owners did not have better knowledge of system capabilities/limitations than non-owners, in fact, owners had a stronger bias in favour of system capabilities. For non-owners, better knowledge of system capabilities was associated with lower trust, and those who were more biased towards endorsing system capabilities had higher trust. Neither knowledge nor response bias was associated with trust among owners. Further research is needed to confirm our results with a larger sample of owners, but given that it is also impractical to expect drivers to learn and remember all possible ADAS limitations, it may be beneficial to focus training efforts on improving drivers' overall understanding of the fallibility of ADAS and reinforcing their role when using ADAS to support appropriate trust and reliance.

Abstract
In priming research, it is often argued that humans can discriminate stimuli outside consciousness. For example, the semantic meaning of numbers can be processed even when the numbers are so strongly masked that participants are not aware of them. These claims are typically based on a certain pattern of results: Direct measures indicate no conscious awareness of the masked stimuli, while indirect measures show clear priming effects of the same stimuli on reaction times or neurophysiological measures. From this pattern, preserved (unconscious) processing in the indirect task is concluded. However, this widely used standard reasoning is problematic and leads to spurious claims of unconscious processing. Such problems can be avoided by comparing sensitivities of direct and indirect measures. Many studies are affected by these problems, such that a reassessment of the literature is needed. Here, we investigated whether numbers can be processed unconsciously. In three experiments, we replicated and extended well-established effects of number priming over a wide range of stimulus visibilities. We then compared the standard reasoning to a sensitivity analysis, where direct and indirect effects are compared using the same metric. Results show that the sensitivities of indirect measures did not exceed those of direct measures, thereby indicating no evidence for preserved unconscious processing when awareness of the stimuli is low. Instead, it seems that at low visibility there is residual processing that affects direct and indirect measures to a similar degree. This suggests that similar processing modes cause those effects in direct and indirect measures.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Failure-to-identify hunting incidents occur when a hunter, believing they are shooting at an animal, shoots at another human. Anecdotal evidence from the hunting community suggests that heightened arousal or excitement ("buck fever"), liquid intake, food intake, sleepiness and personality factors may be contributory factors to such incidents. Hunters who have shot other people based on failures-to-identify also report observing their hunted quarry for a considerable time before discharging their firearm. Concerning the complexity of hunting, we sought to ascertain if simulation would prove an effective platform for future safety research into this phenomenon. METHOD We conducted a video-based simulation of a deer hunt during a hunting exhibition show. Participants (N = 60) took part in one of four conditions - two types of scenario (having a good versus bad hunt) and two types of video (clear opportunity to shoot a stag versus clear opportunity to shoot an animal that cannot be identified). We investigated hunting outcomes and physiological arousal during the simulation, as well as personality traits, and self-reports of food, liquid intake and sleepiness. We also measured estimated versus actual time elapsed. RESULTS Pupil dilation, consistent with psychophysiological arousal, occurred when the hunter spotted their first stag, whereas Electrodermal Activity reduced. In the 10 s before shooting, EDA increased substantially. Time also appeared to slow down based on the participants' estimations of duration. CONCLUSIONS The findings corroborate suggestions of physiological arousal in the immediate lead-up to shooting but fall short of direct evidence for "buck fever" contributing to target misidentification. The simulation appeared to provide enough immersion to facilitate future research. PRACTICAL APPLICATION This helps to understand the psychophysiological and temporal considerations of a hunter as they decide to shoot based on the information available to them at the time.

Abstract
Forensic science plays an increasingly important role in the criminal justice system; yet, many forensic procedures have not been subject to the empirical scrutiny that is expected in other scientific disciplines. Over the past two decades, the scientific community has done well to bridge the gap, but have likely only scratched the tip of the iceberg. We offer the discriminability-reliability distinction as a critical framework to guide future research on diagnostic-testing procedures in the forensic science domain. We argue that the primary concern of the scientist ought to be maximizing discriminability and that the primary concern of the criminal justice system ought to be assessing the reliability of evidence. We argue that Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) analysis is uniquely equipped for determining which of two procedures or conditions has better discriminability and we also demonstrate how estimates of reliability can be extracted from this Signal Detection framework.

Abstract
In a signal detection theory (SDT) approach to associative learning, one assumes that, when a subject is exposed to a flow of stimuli, an association is created between the internal representations of a cue and of an outcome, allowing the representation of the cue to activate the representation of the outcome. The outcome activation is a random variable drawn from a Gaussian distribution with mean m (sensitivity to the contingency) and standard deviation d (variability in outcome activation). Depending on whether the outcome activation is above or below various decision thresholds, the participant perceives either a negative, a null, or a positive contingency between the cue and the outcome. This study presents a detailed SDT analysis of the performance of four participants on whom data in a contingency assessment task were collected almost daily during several months. Parameters from the SDT model proved relatively stable over time, except if feedback was provided to the subject. In that case, for some participants but not all, the sensitivity increased. The decision criteria were also affected. Some of these changes endured despite the discontinuation of feedback. The variability in outcome activation was not affected by the feedback.

Abstract
Visual experiences can be triggered externally, by signals coming from the outside world during perception; or internally, by signals from memory during mental imagery. Imagery and perception activate similar neural codes in sensory areas, suggesting that they might sometimes be confused. In the current study, we investigated whether imagery influences perception by instructing participants to imagine gratings while externally detecting these same gratings at threshold. In a series of three experiments, we showed that imagery led to a more liberal criterion for reporting stimulus presence, and that this effect was both independent of expectation and stimulus-specific. Furthermore, participants with more vivid imagery were generally more likely to report the presence of external stimuli, independent of condition. The results can be explained as either a low-level sensory or a high-level decision-making effect. We discuss that the most likely explanation is that during imagery, internally generated sensory signals are sometimes confused for perception and suggest how the underlying mechanisms can be further characterized in future research. Our findings show that imagery and perception interact and emphasize that internally and externally generated signals are combined in complex ways to determine conscious perception.

Abstract
Psychometric curve fits relate physical stimuli to an observer's performance. In experiments an observer may "lapse" and respond with a random guess, which may negatively impact (e.g., bias) the psychometric fit parameters. A lapse-rate model has been popularized by Wichmann and Hill, which reduces the impact of lapses on other estimated parameters by adding a parameter to model the lapse rate. Since lapses are discrete events, we developed a discrete lapse theory and tested a "lapse identification" algorithm to identify individual outlier trials (i.e., potential lapses) based upon an approximate statistical criterion and discard these trials. Specifically, we focused on stimuli sampled using an adaptive staircase for a one-interval, direction-recognition task (i.e., psychometric function ranging from 0 to 1 and the spread of the curve corresponds to the threshold, which is often a parameter of interest for many fitted psychometric functions). Through simulations, we found that as the lapse rate increased the threshold became substantially overestimated, consistent with earlier analyses. While the lapse-rate model reduced the overestimation of threshold with many lapses, with lower lapse rates it yielded substantial threshold underestimation, though less so when fitting many (e.g., 1,000) trials. In comparison, the lapse-identification algorithm yielded accurate threshold estimates across a wide range of lapse rates (from 0 to 5%), which is critical since the lapse rate is seldom known. We further demonstrate the performance of the lapse-identification algorithm to be suitable for a variety of experimental conditions and conclude with some considerations of its use. In particular, we suggest using the lapse-identification algorithm unless the experiment has many trials (e.g., >500) or if somehow the lapse rate is known to be high (e.g., ≥5%), for which the lapse-rate model approaches remain preferred.

Abstract
Divided attention may be more important than ever to comprehend, given ubiquitous distractors in modern living. In humans, concern has been expressed about the negative impact of distraction in education, the home, and the workplace. While acetylcholine supports divided attention, in part via muscarinic receptors, little is known about the specific muscarinic subtypes that may contribute. We designed a novel, high-response rate test of auditory sustained attention, in which rats complete variable-ratio runs on one of two levers, rather than emitting a single response. By doing this, we can present a secondary visual distractor task during some trials, for which a correct nosepoke response is reinforced with a more palatable food pellet. The nonspecific muscarinic antagonist scopolamine impaired performance, and slowed and reduced lever press activity. We then explored antagonists that preferentially block the M1 and M4 subtypes, because these receptors are potential therapeutic targets for cognitive enhancers. Telenzepine, an M1-preferring antagonist, impaired divided attention performance, but not performance of the attention task without distraction. Telenzepine also had fewer nonspecific effects than scopolamine. In contrast, the M4-preferring antagonist tropicamide had no effects. Analysis of overall behavior also indicated that accuracy in the main attention task decreased as a function of engagement with the distractor task. These results implicate the M1 receptor in divided attention.

Abstract
Many important real-world decision tasks involve the detection of rarely occurring targets (e.g., weapons in luggage, potentially cancerous abnormalities in radiographs). Over the past decade, it has been repeatedly demonstrated that extreme prevalence (both high and low) leads to an increase in errors. While this "prevalence effect" is well established, the cognitive and/or perceptual mechanisms responsible for it are not. One reason for this is that the most common tool for analyzing prevalence effects, Signal Detection Theory, cannot distinguish between different biases that might be present. Through an application to pathology image-based decision-making, we illustrate that an evidence accumulation modeling framework can be used to disentangle different types of biases. Importantly, our results show that prevalence influences both response expectancy and stimulus evaluation biases, with novices (students, N = 96) showing a more pronounced response expectancy bias and experts (medical laboratory professionals, N = 19) showing a more pronounced stimulus evaluation bias.

Abstract
The world can be a confusing place, which leads to a significant challenge: how do we figure out what is true? To accomplish this, children possess two relevant skills: reasoning about the likelihood of their own accuracy (metacognitive confidence) and reasoning about the likelihood of others' accuracy (mindreading). Guided by Signal Detection Theory and Simulation Theory, we examine whether these two self- and other-oriented skills are one in the same, relying on a single cognitive process. Specifically, Signal Detection Theory proposes that confidence in a decision is purely derived from the imprecision of that decision, predicting a tight correlation between decision accuracy and confidence. Simulation Theory further proposes that children attribute their own cognitive experience to others when reasoning socially. Together, these theories predict that children's self and other reasoning should be highly correlated and dependent on decision accuracy. In four studies (N = 374), children aged 4-7 completed a confidence reasoning task and selective social learning task each designed to eliminate confounding language and response biases, enabling us to isolate the unique correlation between self and other reasoning. However, in three of the four studies, we did not find that individual differences on the two tasks correlated, nor that decision accuracy explained performance. These findings suggest self and other reasoning are either independent in childhood, or the result of a single process that operates differently for self and others. Abstract
The distance effect is the change in the performance during numerical magnitude comparison, depending on the numerical distance between the compared numbers (Moyer & Landauer, Nature, 215[5109], 1519-1520, 1967). This effect is generally accepted as evidence for the mental number line (MNL) hypothesis, which proposes that the mental representation of the numbers align in an increasing linear (or monotone) order. The majority of studies investigating the distance effect are focused on the reaction time (RT) findings, which show slower responses for closer numbers. In the present study, we examined the distance effect by applying signal detection theory (SDT) to a magnitude comparison task. We aimed to reveal whether discrimination ability and the response bias measures were affected by the location of numbers on the MNL. To accomplish this, we developed a magnitude comparison task using a go/no-go procedure in which participants performed a magnitude comparison based on a reference number (i.e., 5). Results revealed a substantial distance effect in both sensitivity and response bias measures-a better discrimination performance for far numbers, and a larger response bias for close numbers. In addition, an RT distribution analysis revealed that the distance effect seems to originate mainly from slower responses. Based on the current data, we suggest that sensitivity and response bias measures could offer comprehensive information in the understanding of number-based decisions.

Abstract
Researchers sometimes use informal judgment for statistical model diagnostics and assumption checking. Informal judgment might seem more desirable than formal judgment because of a paradox: Formal hypothesis tests of assumptions appear to become less useful as sample size increases. We suggest that this paradox can be resolved by evaluating both formal and informal statistical judgment via a simplified signal detection framework. In 4 studies, we used this approach to compare informal judgments of normality diagnostic graphs (histograms, Q-Q plots, and P-P plots) to the performance of several formal tests (Shapiro-Wilk test, Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, etc.). Participants judged whether or not graphs of sample data came from a normal population (Experiments 1-2) or whether or not from a population close enough to normal for a parametric test to be more powerful than a nonparametric one (Experiments 3-4). Across all experiments, participants' informal judgments showed lower discriminability than did formal hypothesis tests. This pattern occurred even after participants were given 400 training trials with feedback, a financial incentive, and ecologically valid distribution shapes. The discriminability advantage of formal normality tests led to slightly more powerful follow-up tests (parametric vs. nonparametric). Overall, the framework used here suggests that formal model diagnostics may be more desirable than informal ones.
