Abstract
Cigarettes with pronounced astringency can diminish consumers' enjoyment. However, due to the complex composition of cigarettes, quantifying astringency intensity accurately has been challenging. To address this, research was conducted to develop a method for assessing astringency intensity in a simulated oral environment. The astringency intensity of four cigarette brands was determined using the standard sensory evaluation method. The mainstream smoke absorbing solution (MS) was prepared by simulating the cigarette smoking process, and its physicochemical properties (such as total phenol content and pH levels) were analyzed. The lubrication properties of the five solutions were tested using the MFT-5000 wear tester, and factors influencing cigarette astringency were examined. The findings showed that total phenol content and pH of MS were positively and negatively correlated with astringency intensity, respectively. Particularly, the lubrication properties of MS were significantly correlated with astringency intensity, and the correlation coefficient was affected by load and speed during testing. The study concluded that coefficient of friction was a more reliable measure for assessing the extent of astringency in cigarettes than the total phenol content and pH of MS, offering new insights into astringency evaluation and development of high-grade cigarettes.

Abstract
During co-action between contact elements in reciprocating motion, different working conditions exist in outer and inner zones of stationary elements. Because the tribological effects of surface texturing depend on the operating conditions, various dimple patterns were created in the middle part of the steel disc and near the reversal points. The behaviors of variable dimple patterns were compared with those of uniform texturing and untexturing. It was found that the dimple patterns in the middle disc zone depended on the resistance to motion. The best tribological behavior was obtained for a pit area ratio of 13% and diameter of 0.4 mm in the inner zone, and pit area ratio of 3% and diameter of 0.2 mm in the outer zones. Low resistance to motion and the smallest friction variation of all tested sliding pairs were achieved. For the same pit area ratio of 13% in a disc of 0.4 mm, the dimple diameter behaved better than in the 0.2 mm diameter disc. The greatest decrease in the coefficient of friction of 85% compared to untextured sliding pair was achieved for uniform laser texturing with a pit area ratio of 13% and dimple diameter of 0.4 mm, when the normal load was 40 N and frequency of displacement was 20 Hz.

Abstract
The developments in manufacturing technologies are expected to reduce energy input without compromising product quality. Regarding the material densification process, numerical simulation methods are applied to achieve this goal. In this case, relevant material models are built using functions that describe the variation in mechanical parameters of the material in question due to its deformation. The literature review conducted for this research has revealed a shortage of experimental research methods allowing a determination of the coefficient of friction at low temperatures, approximately 200 K. This article proposes a method for determining the friction coefficient of dry ice sliding against steel. The experimental results were analysed to obtain several functions describing the variation in the coefficient of friction. These functions were then compared using goodness-of-fit indexes. Finally, two functions with similar goodness-of-fit values were chosen. The findings of this research project will complement the already available information and may be used in various research and implementation projects related to the development or improvement of currently used crystallised carbon dioxide conversion processes.

Abstract
Introduction: In recent research, the expansion in the use of Mg alloys for biomedical applications has been approached by modifying their surfaces in conjunction with micro-arc oxidation (MAO) techniques which enhance their abrasion and corrosion resistance. Methods: In this study, combining laser texturing and MAO techniques to produce the dense ceramic coatings with microstructures. On the surface of the AZ31 Mg alloy, a micro-raised annulus array texture has been designed in order to increase the surface friction under liquid lubrication and to improve the operator's grip when holding the tool. For this work, the micro-morphology of the coatings was characterised, and the friction properties of the commonly used scalpel shank material 316 L, the untextured surface and the textured surface were comparatively analysed against disposable surgical gloves. Results and discussion: The results show that the Laser-MAO ceramic coating grows homogenous, the porosity decreases from 14.3% to 7.8%, and the morphology after friction indicates that the coating has good wear resistance. More specifically, the average coefficient of friction (COF) of the three types of gloves coated with Laser-MAO ceramic was higher than that of the 316 L and MAO ceramic coatings under the action of the annulus-integrated texture under the lubrication conditions of physiological saline and defatted sheep blood, which achieved the goal of increasing friction for the purpose of helping to prevent the problem of tool slippage from the hand.

Abstract
In connection with the growing importance of the efficiency and reliability of tools in industrial sectors, our research represents a key step in the effort to optimize production processes and increase their service life in real conditions. The study deals with the comparison of the tribological properties of three tool steels, two of which were produced by the powder metallurgy method-ASP2017 and ASP2055-and the last tool steel underwent the conventional production method-X153CrMoV12. The samples were mechanically machined with the finishing technology of turning and, finally, heat treated (Q + T). The study focused on the evaluation of hardness, resulting microstructure, wear resistance, and coefficient of friction (COF). The ball-on-disc method was chosen as part of the COF and wear resistance test. The tribological test took place at room temperature with dry friction to accelerate surface wear. The pressing material was a hardened steel ball G40 (DIN 100Cr6). Measurements were performed at loads of 10 N, 6 N, and 2 N and turning radii of 13 mm, 18 mm, and 23 mm, which represents a peripheral speed of 0.34, 0.47, and 0.60 m/s. The duration of the measurement for each sample was 20 min. The results showed that the COF of powder steels showed almost the same values, while a significant difference occurred with the increase of the radius rotation in the case of conventional steel. The results within the friction mechanism showed two types of wear, namely, adhesive and abrasive wear, depending on the Q + T process. From a tribological point of view in terms of wear, it was possible to state that the material ASP2055 after Q + T showed the lowest rate of wear of all the tested steels.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) is a polyaromatic semi-crystalline thermoplastic polymer with mechanical and lubrication properties favorable for biomedical applications. Despite of its aesthetic appearance, ceramic brackets are unsatisfactory in brittleness and thickness, while PEEK is a potential material for aesthetic orthodontic brackets. OBJECTIVE To fabricate a novel aesthetic orthodontic bracket and evaluate friction properties of PEEK and stainless steel wires. METHODS All polyether ether ketone (PEEK) and ceramic samples disks were made into disks (diameter, 5 mm; thickness, 2 mm). The tested surfaces of PEEK were ground with #600, #800 and #1200 SiC papers, followed by polishing with Sof-Lex kit (3M ESPE, USA). The surface roughness was tested using a laser profilometer device (VK-X200, Keyence, Japan). The COFs of the specimens and stainless steel (SS) archwires were tested using a Universal Micro-Tribotester (UMT-3, Bruker, USA). The wear scratches on the materials' surfaces were examined by using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) (Hitachi SU8010). The elastic modulus and hardness of samples were examined with a nano-indenter (XP, Keysight Technologies, USA). RESULTS The mean surface roughness of PEEK and Ceramic are 0.320 ± 0.028 μm and 0.343 ± 0.044 μm, respectively. PEEK has a lower Friction coefficient than Ceramic and the difference between the two groups was statistically significant (P< 0.05). The abrasive wear of Ceramic was the main wear style and was characterized by the observation of chipping fractures, while PEEK surface looked smooth without obvious scale-like desquamations and granular debris, indicating adhesive wear. CONCLUSION Within the limitations of the present study, PEEK shows lower coefficient of friction than ceramic. PEEK has excellent properties such as low friction coefficient, smooth surface and good mechanical properties, and thus meets the requirements for orthodontic brackets. It is considered as a potential bracket material with both low friction and aesthetic performance.

Abstract
Experiments with changes in motion geometry can provide valuable data for engineering and development purposes, allowing a better understanding of the influence of tribological factors on the performance and service life of joints. The presented subject article focused on the experimental investigation of the influence of the geometry of the movement of the friction process on the change in the tribological properties of 30CrNiMo8 steel. The friction process was carried out without the use of a lubricant in contact with a steel ball of G40 material with a diameter of 4.76 mm. The steel ball performed two types of movement on the surface of the experimental material. The first method used was ball on disc, in which the ball moved reciprocally in an oval direction at an angle of 180° on a circumferential length of 35 mm at a speed of 5 mm/s. The second method consists of the same input parameters of the measurement, with the difference that the path along which the ball moved had a linear character. The load during the experiment was set at a constant value of 50 N with 1000 repetitions. The results show that with the ball on disc method, there was an increase in wear by 147% compared to the linear test method, which was approximately a coefficient of increase in wear of 2.468. EDS analysis pointed to the occurrence of oxidative wear that affected the resulting COF values, which were lower by 8% when using the ball on disc method due to a more uniform distribution of O and C on the surface of the friction groove where these elements acted as solid microlubricants. With the ball on disc method, defects in the form of microcracks occurred, which affected the reduction in the values of the depth of the affected area of microhardness.

Abstract
Utilizing reactive DC magnetron sputtering method, TiN coatings were deposited on the silicon substrates at different nitrogen flows and powers. A study of the X-ray phase composition of the coatings was carried out. The stoichiometric composition of the coatings was determined using energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy. The structure of the surface, cross-section, and thickness of the coatings were determined using scanning electron (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). A significant change in the surface structure of TiN coatings was established with changes in deposition power and nitrogen flow. SEM images of cross-sections of all coated samples showed that the formation of coatings occurs in the form of a columnar structure with a perpendicular orientation relative to the silicon substrate. The mechanical properties (elastic modulus E and microhardness H) of TiN coatings of the first group demonstrate a maximum at a nitrogen flow of 3 sccm and are 184 ± 11 GPa and 15.7 ± 1.3 GPa, respectively. In the second group, the values of E and H increase due to a decrease in the size of the structural elements of the coating (grains and crystallites). In the third group, E and H decrease. Microtribological tests were carried out in 4 stages: at a constant load, multi-cycle for 10 and 100 cycles, and with increasing load. The coefficient of friction (CoF) and specific volumetric wear ω depend on the roughness, topology, and mechanical properties of the resulting coatings. Fracture toughness was determined using nanoscratch and depends on the mechanical properties of TiN coatings. Within each group, coatings with the best mechanical and microtribological properties were described: in the first group-TiN coating at 3 sccm (with (29.6 ± 0.1) at.% N), in the second group-TiN coating at 2 sccm (with (40.8 ± 0.2) at.% N), and in the third group-TiN coating at 1 sccm (c (37.3 ± 0.2) at.% N).

Abstract
Fibers play an important role when studying the tribological behavior of reinforced friction composites. The purpose of the current research is to develop a glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) recipe with improved tribological properties as well as to find the composites with the optimal tribological behavior. A ball-on-disc tribometer was used to perform dry sliding friction testing, the obtained results were then analyzed with the ELECTRE (ELimination Et Choix Traduisant la REalite-elimination and choice translating the reality) method based on a utility matrix having process parameters the applied load, sliding velocity, and weight percentage of the fiber content. The ELECTRE method was chosen to find the optimal tribological parameters, with respect to more performance criteria, because it is one of the best multiple criteria decision-making methods. The optimal combination of parameters for the multi-response characteristics of the investigated friction composite was at an applied load of 10 N, a sliding velocity of 0.1 ms-1 and a 54% weight fiber content. The results showed that the addition of glass fiber (GF) content did not considerably improve the tribological behavior of the friction composites. In addition, from the nano focus-optical 3D scanning electron microscopy, images of the friction, tested friction and wear composites, plate formation, fiber-matrix delamination, fiber pull-out, and matrix cracking and damage, various wear mechanisms were identified.

Abstract
(1) Background: With the ever-increasing number of polymer materials and limited data on polymer gear calculations, designers are often required to perform extensive experimental testing in order to establish reliable operational data for specific gear applications. This research investigates the potential of a Polyvinyldene fluoride (PVDF) polymer material in gear applications, considering various loading conditions and different types of gear transmission configurations, including both self-mated mesh and steel/PVDF mesh. (2) Methods: PVDF gear samples were tested on a specially designed test rig that enables active torque control and temperature monitoring in order to obtain the necessary design parameters and failure modes. Each test for certain load conditions was repeated five times, and to fully investigate the potential of PVDF gear samples, comparative testing was performed for Polyoxymethylene (POM) gear. (3) Results: Tribological compatibility, tooth load capacity, and lifespan assessment, along with the types of failure, which, for some configurations, include several types of failures, such as wear and melting, were determined. Temperature monitoring data were used to estimate the coefficient of friction at the tooth contact of analyzed gear pairs, while optical methods were used to determine a wear coefficient. (4) Conclusions: The tribological compatibility of polymer gear pairs needs to be established in order to design a gear pair for a specific application. PVDF gear samples mated with steel gear showed similar lifespan properties compared to POM samples. Temperature monitoring and optical methods serve as a basis for the determination of the design parameters. PVDF is an appropriate material to use in gear applications, considering its comparable properties with POM. The particular significance of this research is reflected in the establishment of the design parameters of PVDF gear, as well as in the analysis of the potential of the PVDF material in gear applications, which gives exceptional significance to the current knowledge on polymer gears, considering that the PVDF material has not previously been analyzed in gear applications.

Abstract
In recent years, additive manufacturing technology, particularly in plastic component fabrication, has gained prominence. However, fundamental modelling of the influence of materials like ABS, PC, and PLA on tribological properties in fused deposition modeling (FDM) remains scarce, particularly in non-lubricated, oil-lubricated, and grease-lubricated modes. This experimental study systematically investigates the effects of material type, lubrication method, layer thickness, and infill density on FDM component tribology. A tribology analysis is conducted using a TRB3 tribometer. The results indicate a coefficient of friction (CoF) range between 0.04 and 0.2, generally increasing and decreasing with layer thickness and filler density. The lubrication impact hinges on the material surface texture. The study models the intricate relationships between these variables via full-factor analysis, showing a strong alignment between the modelled and measured friction coefficients (an average error of 3.83%). Validation tests on different materials affirm the model's reliability and applicability.

Abstract
Ensuring adequate reliability of the production process of packaging closures has made it necessary to study the effect of annealing and varnishing variants on the strength and structural properties of the stock material. As a test material, EN AW-5052-H28 aluminium alloy sheets with a thickness of 0.21 mm were used. The surface treatment of the test material involved varnishing the sheet metal surface using various varnishes and soaking the sheet metal. The coefficient of friction and the abrasion resistance of the coatings were determined using the T-21 ball-and-disc tribotester. The tested sheets were subjected to tribological analysis by the T-05 roller-block tribotester using countersamples made of Caldie and Sverker 21 tool steels. The results of the tests showed differences in mechanical and structural properties depending on the method of sample preparation. Based on the test results, significant differences in the adhesion of anti-wear coatings were found. The results revealed that the most favourable friction conditions are provided by the CrN coating. The (AlTi)N interlayer in the (AlTi)N/(AlCr)N coating adheres to the substrate over the entire tested area and no detachment from its surface was observed, which proves good bonding at the substrate/coating interface. The tested AlTiN/TiAlSiXN coating is characterised by a more homogeneous, compact microstructure compared to the (AlTi)N/(AlCr)N coating.

Abstract
Open-cell AMMCs are high-strength and lightweight materials with applications in different types of industries. However, one of the main goals in using these materials is to enhance their tribological behavior, which improves their durability and performance under frictional conditions. This study presents an approach for fabricating and predicting the wear behavior of open-cell AlSn6Cu-SiC composites, which are a type of porous AMMCs with improved tribological properties. The composites were fabricated using liquid-state processing, and their tribological properties are investigated by the pin-on-disk method under different loads (50 N and 100 N) and with dry-sliding friction. The microstructure and phase composition of the composites were investigated by scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. The mass wear and coefficient of friction (COF) of the materials were measured as quantitative indicators of their tribological behavior. The results showed that the open-cell AlSn6Cu-SiC composite had an enhanced tribological behavior compared to the open-cell AlSn6Cu material in terms of mass wear (38% decrease at 50 N and 31% decrease at 100 N) while maintaining the COF at the same level. The COF of the composites was predicted by six different machine learning methods based on the experimental data. The performance of these models was evaluated by various metrics (R2, MSE, RMSE, and MAE) on the validation and test sets. Based on the results, the open-cell AlSn6Cu-SiC composite outperformed the open-cell AlSn6Cu material in terms of mass loss under different loads with similar COF values. The ML models that were used can predict the COF accurately and reliably based on features, but they are affected by data quality and quantity, overfitting or underfitting, and load change.

Abstract
The coefficient of friction for different contacting materials against skin is mainly influenced by the nature of the materials (synthetic and natural fabrics), mechanical contact parameters (interfacial pressure and sliding velocities), and physiological skin conditions (ambient humidity and skin moisture content). In the present research work, seven different types of papers used in everyday life were analyzed. The physical properties of these materials were determined through tensile tests and friction tests. By comparing mechanical properties with coefficient of friction, it was possible to conclude that the coefficient of friction is strongly correlated with the mechanical properties.

Abstract
This paper aims to investigate the impact of beam deflection geometry on the structure, surface architecture, and friction coefficient of electron-beam-modified TC4 titanium alloys. During the experiments, the electron beam was deflected in the form of different scanning geometries, namely linear, circular, and matrix. The structure of the treated specimens was investigated in terms of their phase composition by employing X-ray diffraction experiments. The microstructure was studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The surface architecture was examined by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The friction coefficient was studied by a mechanical wear test. It was found that the linear and circular deflection geometries lead to a transformation of the phase composition, from double-phase α + β to α' martensitic structure. The application of a linear manner of scanning leads to a residual amount of beta phase. The use of a matrix does not tend to structural changes on the surface of the TC4 alloy. In the case of linear geometry, the thickness of the modified zone is more than 800 μm while, in the case of EBSM using circular scanning, the thickness is about 160 μm. The electron-beam surface modification leads to a decrease in the surface roughness to about 27 nm in EBSM with linear deflection geometry and 31 nm in circular deflection geometry, compared to that of the pure TC4 substrate (about 160 nm). The electron-beam surface modification of the TC4 alloy leads to a decrease in the coefficient of friction (COF), with the lowest COF values obtained in the case of linear deflection geometry (0.32). The results obtained in this study show that beam deflection geometry has a significant effect on the surface roughness and friction coefficient of the treated surfaces. It was found that the application of a linear manner of scanning leads to the formation of a surface with the lowest roughness and friction coefficient.

Abstract
This paper is devoted to the determination of the coefficient of friction (COF) in the drawbead region in metal forming processes. As the test material, AW-5251 aluminium alloys sheets fabricated under various hardening conditions (AW-5251-O, AW-5251-H14, AW-5251-H16 and AW-5251H22) were used. The sheets were tested using a drawbead simulator with different countersample roughness and different orientations of the specimens in relation to the sheet rolling direction. A drawbead simulator was designed to model the friction conditions when the sheet metal passed through the drawbead in sheet metal forming. The experimental tests were carried out under conditions of dry friction and lubrication of the sheet metal surfaces with three lubricants: machine oil, hydraulic oil, and engine oil. Based on the results of the experimental tests, the value of the COF was determined. The Random Forest (RF) machine learning algorithm and artificial neural networks (ANNs) were used to identify the parameters affecting the COF. The R statistical package software version 4.1.0 was used for running the RF model and neural network. The relative importance of the inputs was analysed using 12 different activation functions in ANNs and nine different loss functions in the RF. Based on the experimental tests, it was concluded that the COF for samples cut along the sheet rolling direction was greater than for samples cut in the transverse direction. However, the COF's most relevant input was oil viscosity (0.59), followed by the average counter sample roughness Ra (0.30) and the yield stress Rp0.2 and strength coefficient K (0.05 and 0.06, respectively). The hard sigmoid activation function had the poorest R2 (0.25) and nRMSE (0.30). The ideal run was found after training and testing the RF model (R2 = 0.90 ± 0.028). Ra values greater than 1.1 and Rp0.2 values between 105 and 190 resulted in a decreased COF. The COF values dropped to 9-35 for viscosity and 105-190 for Rp0.2, with a gap between 110 and 130 when the oil viscosity was added. The COF was low when the oil viscosity was 9-35, and the Ra was 0.95-1.25. The interaction between K and the other inputs, which produces a relatively limited range of reduced COF values, was the least relevant. The COF was reduced by setting the Rp0.2 between 105 and 190, the Ra between 0.95 and 1.25, and the oil viscosity between 9 and 35.

Abstract
This novel experimental work aims to bring further knowledge of frictional performance of common barrier products used in the treatment of incontinence-associated dermatitis and determine how the skin-pad interface changes when a treatment is applied to the skin. Key data is reported and there is an in-depth analysis into friction profiles which reveals great differences between how different skin-pad tribosystems operate when exposed to commercially available barrier treatments. In a wet-pad state Barrier cream A (3M™ Cavilon™ Barrier cream) reduced friction and had much lower dynamic and static coefficients of friction than the other barrier treatments (Barrier cream B (Sorbaderm Barrier cream) and the Barrier spray C (Sorbaderm Barrier spray)). Barrier cream A provided stable friction coefficients in reciprocating sliding, whereas the other treatments, and untreated skin, did not display this unique characteristic. The barrier spray gave rise to high static friction coefficients and exhibited the most stick-slip. All three candidate barrier protection products were found to reduce directional differences in the static coefficient of friction: indicative of reduced shear loading. Knowledge of the desirable frictional properties would drive innovation in product development, and benefit companies, clinicians and users.

Abstract
The absence of artificial articular cartilage could cause the failure of artificial joints due to excessive material wear. There has been limited research on alternative materials for articular cartilage in joint prostheses, with few reducing the friction coefficient of artificial cartilage prostheses to the range of the natural cartilage friction coefficient (0.001-0.03). This work aimed to obtain and characterize mechanically and tribologically a new gel for potential application in articular replacement. Therefore, poly(hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA)/glycerol synthetic gel was developed as a new type of artificial joint cartilage with a low friction coefficient, especially in calf serum. This glycerol material was developed via mixing HEMA and glycerin at a mass ratio of 1:1. The mechanical properties were studied, and it was found that the hardness of the synthetic gel was close to that of natural cartilage. The tribological performance of the synthetic gel was investigated using a reciprocating ball-on-plate rig. The ball samples were made of a cobalt-chromium-molybdenum (Co-Cr-Mo) alloy, and the plates were synthetic glycerol gel and two additional materials for comparison, which were ultra-high molecular polyethylene (UHMWPE) and 316L stainless steel. It was found that synthetic gel exhibited the lowest friction coefficient in both calf serum (0.018) and deionized water (0.039) compared to the other two conventional materials for knee prostheses. The surface roughness of the gel was found to be 4-5 μm through morphological analysis of wear. This newly proposed material provided a possible solution as a type of cartilage composite coating with hardness and tribological performance close to the nature of use in wear couples with artificial joints.

Abstract
The influence of various process parameters on the deep drawing process is a current research topic in sheet metal forming technology. Starting from the application of the previously constructed original testing device, an original tribological model was developed based on the process of sheet metal strip sliding between flat contact surfaces under variable pressures. A complex experiment was executed using an Al alloy sheet, tool contact surfaces of different roughness, two types of lubricants and variable contact pressures. The procedure included analytically pre-defined contact pressure functions based on which, for each of the mentioned conditions, the dependencies of the drawing forces and friction coefficients were obtained. The pressure in function P1 constantly decreased from a high initial value until the minimum, while in function P3 the pressure increased until the minimum value at the halfway point of the stroke, after which it increased up to the initial value. On the other hand, the pressure in function P2 constantly increased from the initial minimum value until the maximum value, while in function P4 the pressure increased until reaching the maximum value at the halfway point of the stroke, after which it decreased to the minimum value. This enabled the determination of the influence of tribological factors on the process parameters of intensity of traction (deformation force) and coefficient of friction. The pressure functions starting with decreasing trends produced higher values for the traction forces and the friction coefficient. In addition, it was established that the roughness of the contact surfaces of the tool, especially those with titanium nitride coating, has a significant influence on the process parameters. For surfaces of lower roughness (polished), a tendency of the Al thin sheet to form a glued-on layer was noticed. This was especially prominent for lubrication with MoS2-based grease under conditions of high contact pressure (functions P1 and P4 at the beginning of the contact).

Abstract
Dental decay still presents a major health problem among children. Its treatment usually requires the use of stainless steel crowns. This study compares the wear behavior of 316 L stainless steel and polyetheretherketone (PEEK) composite under identical test conditions. The wear tests were conducted in a reciprocating ball-on-plate tribometer (Plint TE67/R) using alumina balls as a counterface and artificial saliva as a lubricant at 37 °C to faithfully mimic oral conditions. The coefficient of friction (COF) and specific wear rate (k) values were determined and SEM/EDS examinations were performed to identify the predominant wear mechanisms. Results showed that PEEK exhibited a significantly lower coefficient of friction (COF = 0.094 ± 0.004) and thus lower wear volume (ΔV = 0.0078 ± 0.0125 mm3) and higher wear resistance, with an average value of specific wear rate of k = 9.07 × 10-6 mm3N-1m-1 when compared to stainless steel (COF = 0.32 ± 0.03, ΔV = 0.0125 ± 0.0029 mm3, k = 1.45 × 10-5 mm3N-1m-1). PEEK was revealed to be a potential material for use in pediatric crowns due to its high wear resistance while overcoming the disadvantages associated with steel at both an aesthetic and biological level.

Abstract
Aluminium alloy sheets cause many problems in sheet metal forming processes owing to their tendency to gall the surface of the tool. The paper presents a method for the determination of the kinematic friction coefficient of friction pairs. The determination of coefficient of friction (COF) in sheet metal forming requires specialised devices that 'simulate' friction conditions in specific areas of the formed sheet. In this article, the friction behaviour of aluminium alloy sheets was determined using the strip drawing test. The 1-mm-thick 6082 aluminium alloy sheets in T6 temper were used as test material. Different values for nominal pressures (4.38, 6.53, 8.13, 9.47, 10.63, and 11.69 MPa) and different sliding speeds (10 and 20 mm/min.) were considered. The change of friction conditions was also realised with several typical oils (hydraulic oil LHL 32, machine oil LAN 46 and engine oil SAE 5W-40 C3) commonly used in sheet metal forming operations. Friction tests were conducted at room temperature (24 °C). The main tribological mechanisms accompanying friction (adhesion, flattening, ploughing) were identified using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The influence of the parameters of the friction process on the value of the COF was determined using artificial neural networks. The lowest value of the COF was recorded when lubricating the sheet metal surface with SAE 5W40 C3 engine oil, which is characterised as the most viscous of all tested lubricants. In dry friction conditions, a decreasing trend of the COF with increasing contact pressure was observed. In the whole range of applied contact pressures (4.38-11.69 MPa), the value of the COF during lubrication with SAE 5W40 C3 engine oil was between 0.14 and 0.17 for a sliding speed of 10 mm/min and between 0.13 and 0.16 for a sliding speed of 20 mm/min. The value of the COF during dry friction was between 0.23 and 0.28 for a sliding speed of 10 mm/min and between 0.22 and 0.26 for a sliding speed of 20 mm/min. SEM micrographs revealed that the main friction mechanism of 6082-T6 aluminium alloys sheet in contact with cold-work tool steel flattens surface asperities. The sensitivity analysis of the input parameters on the value of COF revealed that oil viscosity has the greatest impact on the value of the COF, followed by contact pressure and sliding speed.

Abstract
Preparing high-strength polymeric materials using an orientation drawing process is considered one of the most urgent topics in the modern world. Graphene nanoplates/polyaniline (GNP/PANI) were added to the commercial grade UHMWPE (GUR 4120) matrix as a filler with antifriction properties. The effect of GNP/PANI addition on the structure, the orientation process, the void formation (cavitation), the mechanical, and tribological properties was studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamical mechanical analysis (DMA), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The paper's findings indicated an increase in the cavitation effect of 120-320% after the addition of GNP/PANI to the UHMWPE polymer matrix. This increase, during the process of the oriented films' thermal orientation hardening, led, in turn, to a decrease in the tensile strength during the process of the oriented films' thermal orientation hardening. Furthermore, the decrease in the coefficient of friction in the best samples of oriented UHMWPE films was two times greater, and the increase in wear resistance was more than an order of magnitude. This process was part of the orientation hardening process for the UHMWPE films containing PE-wax as an intermolecular lubricant, as well as the presence of GNP/PANI in the material, which have a high resistance to abrasive wear.

Abstract
The introduction of combined fillers can effectively improve the mechanical and tribological properties of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). In this work, three different types of nanosized fillers (zirconium dioxide, silicon dioxide, and boron nitride) were introduced in a carbon fiber-reinforced polymer matrix for the development of polymer composite materials (PCM). Tensile and compressive testing were carried out, and the hardness of created PCM was evaluated. It is shown that the compressive strength of PCM increased by 30-70%, and the hardness, increased by 38-55% compared to the initial PTFE. The tribological properties of the developed PCM were evaluated under dry friction conditions. An analysis of the results of an experimental study of wear confirmed that the inclusion of combined fillers (two- and three-component) in PTFE significantly increased wear resistance compared to the polymer matrix with a slight increase in the coefficient of friction. It has been shown that the introduction of three-component fillers has an antagonistic effect on the wear resistance of PCMs compared to two-component fillers. The thermodynamic properties of the composites were analyzed by differential scanning calorimetry and a thermomechanical analyzer. The surface morphology of polymer composites after wear testing was studied by IR spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy to investigate and suggest a possible mechanism for increasing the wear resistance of the developed composites.

Abstract
Titanium carbide (TiC) thin films were deposited by radio frequency magnetron sputtering (RFMS) onto a copper substrate by using Argon (Ar) gas plasma at a gas flow rate of 10.0 sccm. The effect of time and temperature at a constant RF power on the structural and tribological properties were respectively investigated by atomic force spectroscopy (AFM), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and tribological measurements. All films were tested to have crystal structures with the preferential plane (111) and dominant plane (200) grain orientations. Thus, plane (111) has phase identification of Cu(Cu16Ti)0.23 for some samples, whereas plane (200) has a phase identification of Cu(Cu0.997Ti0.003) and Cu(Cu0.923Ti0.077) for other samples. The lowest thin film roughness of 19.797 nm was observed in the sample, with RF power, sputtering time, and a temperature of 200 W, for two hours and 80 °C, respectively. The FTIR spectra of TiC films formed under different sputtering times (2-3 h) and temperatures (80 °C-100 °C) on Cu substrates at a constant sputtering power of 200 W in the range of 5000-500 cm-1. The peaks at 540 cm-1, 780 cm-1, and 1250 cm-1 are presented in the FTIR spectra and the formation of a Ti-C bond was observed. On the other hand, a sample was revealed to have the lowest wear volume of 5.1 × 10-3 mm3 while another sample was obtained with the highest wear volume of 9.3 × 10-3 mm3.

Abstract
Drawbeads are used when forming drawpieces with complex shapes to equalise the flow resistance of a material around the perimeter of the drawpiece or to change the state of stress in certain regions of the drawpiece. This article presents a special drawbead simulator for determining the value of the coefficient of friction on the drawbead. The aim of this paper is the application of artificial neural networks (ANNs) to understand the effect of the most important parameters of the friction process (sample orientation in relation to the rolling direction of the steel sheets, surface roughness of the counter-samples and lubrication conditions) on the coefficient of friction. The intention was to build a database for training ANNs. The friction coefficient was determined for low-carbon steel sheets with various drawability indices: drawing quality DQ, deep-drawing quality DDQ and extra deep-drawing quality EDDQ. Equivalents of the sheets tested in EN standards are DC01 (DQ), DC03 (DDQ) and DC04 (EDDQ). The tests were carried out under the conditions of dry friction and the sheet surface was lubricated with machine oil LAN46 and hydraulic oil LHL32, commonly used in sheet metal forming. Moreover, various specimen orientations (0° and 90°) in relation to the rolling direction of the steel sheets were investigated. Moreover, a wide range of surface roughness values of the counter-samples (Ra = 0.32 μm, 0.63 μm, 1.25 μm and 2.5 μm) were also considered. In general, the value of the coefficient of friction increased with increasing surface roughness of the counter-samples. In the case of LAN46 machine oil, the effectiveness of lubrication decreased with increasing mean roughness of the counter-samples Ra = 0.32-1.25 μm. With increasing drawing quality of the sheet metal, the effectiveness of lubrication increased, but only in the range of surface roughness of the counter-samples in which Ra = 0.32-1.25 μm. This study investigated different transfer functions and training algorithms to develop the best artificial neural network structure. Backpropagation in an MLP structure was used to build the structure. In addition, the COF was calculated using a parameter-based analytical equation. Garson partitioning weight was used to calculate the relative importance (RI) effect on coefficient of friction. The Bayesian regularization backpropagation (BRB)-Trainbr training algorithm, together with the radial basis normalized-Radbasn transfer function, scored best in predicting the coefficient of friction with R2 values between 0.9318 and 0.9180 for the training and testing datasets, respectively.

Abstract
The present article examines special steels used for the production of injection screws in the plastic industry, with a glass fiber content of up to 30%. Experimental materials, M390 and M398, are classified as tool steels, which are produced by powder metallurgy-HIP methods (hot isostatic pressing). The main goal of the presented paper is to propose the optimal tempered temperature of M398 steel and also to compare the tribological properties of both materials and to determine the degree of their wear depending on their final heat treatment. Partial results refer to the analysis of hardness, roughness, the overall wear mechanism, the change in the volume of retained austenite due to the tempering temperature, and the EDS analysis of the worn surfaces in individual contact pairs. A ceramic ball Al2O3 in the α phase was used as the contact material, which had a diameter of 6.35 mm. The ceramic ball performed a rotational movement on the experimental material surface at an elevated temperature of 200 °C using the dry ball-on-disk method. It was experimentally shown that the new M398 material can fully replace the M390 material because it exhibits significantly better tribological properties. The M398 material showed more than a 400% reduction in wear compared to the M390 material. The ideal heat treatment consisted of cryogenic quenching to -78 °C and a tempering temperature of 400 °C. At tempering temperatures of 200 and 400 °C, adhesive wear occurred, which was combined with abrasive wear at a tempered temperature of 600 °C. The averaged coefficient of friction (COF) results show that the M398 material presents less resistance in the friction process and its values are approximately 0.25, while the M390 material showed a COF value of 0.3 after the cryogenic hardening process. The friction surface roughness of the M398 materials also showed lower values compared to the M390 material by approximately 35%. Both of these results are related to the content of M7C3 and MC carbide particles based on Cr and V in the bulk of the material, which are in favor of the M398 material.

Abstract
The aim of the study is the tribological analysis of the crane drum brakes. A theoretical analysis of the wear processes for brake lining was performed and the coefficient of friction under tribological conditions was determined experimentally simulating the operating conditions for three types of brakes. The theoretical study of the wear was oriented towards of determining the lifetime of the brake lining. In the experimental determination of the coefficient of friction, the following parameters were taken into account: the contact pressure between the shoe and the drum; the initial speed of the brake drum; the humidity of the working environment; and the temperature of the drum-brake lining friction surfaces. After performing the experiments, a statistical analysis was conducted, that shows the amount the coefficient of friction is influenced by the previously mentioned parameters: the highest weight was humidity with a value of 35.58%, followed by temperature with a percentage of 23.95%, velocity with 4.54%, and lastly pressure with 4.19%. Furthermore, the equation that expresses the dependence between the coefficient of friction and the parameters is determined. We consider that the results obtained are important for brake manufacturers in order to improve braking efficiency and the safety of overhead cranes.

Abstract
Cortical bone machining is commonly used in craniofacial surgery. The shaping of bone surfaces requires a precise determination of the process’s complexity due to the cutting tool’s defined or undefined geometry. Therefore, research was carried out to assess the impact of the rake angle (γ), clearance angle and depth of cut (d) on the cortical bone machining process. Analysis was carried out based on the orthogonal cutting in three directions. The cutting tool shape was simplified, and the cutting forces and the chip-formation process were monitored. The highest values of the resultant cutting force and shear force were recorded for γ < 0. The specific cutting force decreases with the increase of d. Cutting in the transverse direction is characterized by the highest values of resultant cutting force and shear force. The coefficient of friction depends primarily on the d and takes a constant value or increases with the increase of γ. The tests showed that the chips are formed in the entire range of d ≥ 0.5 µm and create regular shapes for d ≥ 10 µm. The research novelty confirms that even negative cutting angles guarantee controlled cutting and can find wider application in surgical procedures.

Abstract
Coefficient of friction values, wear and surface roughness differences are revealed using pin-on-disc test apparatus examinations under three pv loads, where samples are cut from a reference, unused, and several differently aged and dimensioned, used, dry friction fiber-reinforced hybrid composite clutch facings. Tests are characterized by surface activation energy and separated into Trend 1, ‘clutch killer’, and 2, ‘moderate’, groups from our previous study. The results reveal that acceptable, 0.41–0.58, coefficient of friction values among Trend 1 specimens cannot be reached during high pv tests, though the −0.19–−0.11 difference of minimum and maximum pv results disappears when activation energy reaches 179 MJ. The maximum pv friction coefficient can decrease by up to 30% at working diameter due to clutch killer test circumstances, as 179 MJ surface activation energy is applied, while by moderate tests such losses can only be detected close to 2000 MJ energy values among small-sized facings. Besides that, Trend 2 specific wear values are the third of trend 1 results at inner diameter specimens. Compared to reference facing values, specific wear results at working diameter under maximum pv decrease by 47–100%, while increasing specific wear during lifetime can only be detected at the inner diameter of facings enduring clutch killer tests or that are small-sized facings. Among Trend 1 radial and tangential Ra delta results, inner diameter samples provide more decreasing surface roughness data, while by Trend 2 values, the opposite relation is detected. Apart from the effects of activation energy, mileage and driver profile, facing size and friction diameter influence is also revealed.

Abstract
The application of tribology is not just limited to mechanical components of engineering systems. As a matter of fact, the understanding of friction and wear can be applied to everyday life. One of the important fields is skin tribology, as human skin interacts with various surfaces of different materials. This paper focuses on the friction behavior of the skin when in contact with the fabric and other materials in relative motion. The excessive friction at the fabric-skin interface may lead to discomfort, blistering, chafing, and pressure ulcers especially in athletes who experience higher friction due to rapid movement for an extended period. Other than understanding the fabric properties, it is equally important to understand the structure and properties of the skin to evaluate its function and interaction with the different fabric materials. The identification of the contributing factors of skin friction can help to design suitable fabric materials. An overview of skin functions and the factors that affect the friction on the skin-textile material interface are presented in this review article.

Abstract
The purpose of this review is to summarize data on the structure, mechanical and tribological properties, and wear patterns of composites based on high-performance polymers (HPPs) intended for use in friction units. The review includes three key sections, divided according to the tribological contact schemes regardless of the polymer matrix. In the second part, the analysis of composites is carried out in point contacts. The third section is devoted to the results of studies of HPP-based composites in linear ones. The fourth section summarizes information on flat contacts. Particular attention is paid to the formation of transfer films (TFs) in the contacts and their influence on the tribological patterns of the studied rubbing materials. As a conclusion, it is noted that the challenge of experimental methods for analyzing TFs, stated by K. Friedrich, is effectively solved in recent studies by the XPS method, which enables us to accurately determine their composition. Although this determination is completed after the tribological tests, it allows not only a more accurate interpretation of their results considering specific conditions and loading schemes, but also the ability to design HPP-based composites that form required TFs performing their preset functions.

Abstract
The effect of thermohydrogen treatment and vacuum ion–plasma nitriding on the determination of the volume and surface structure of ball heads made of Ti–6Al–4V alloy was studied. It was found that the submicrocrystalline structure formed in the head during thermohydrogen treatment makes it possible to achieve hardness values of 39–41 units HRC and a surface roughness of 0.02 μm. It was shown that the creation of a modified layer consisting of ε (TiN) and δ (Ti2N) titanium nitrides on the surface of a ball head and the solid interstitial solution of nitrogen in α-titanium makes it possible to completely eliminate material wear when testing for friction on ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene. The equivalent analysis was also conducted with a ball head that had been implanted in a human body for 12 years. It was found that the change in the color of the head, from slightly golden after nitriding to metallic, is due to the formation of an oxynitride nanoscale layer on the surface. It was shown that in contrast with films made of titanium oxide, the film developed in this study has high wear resistance.

Abstract
The article presents the results of friction tests of a 0.8 mm-thick DC04 deep-drawing quality steel sheet. A special friction simulator was used in the tests, reflecting friction conditions occurring while pulling a sheet strip through a drawbead in sheet metal forming. The variable parameters in the experimental tests were as follows: surface roughness of countersamples, lubrication conditions, sample orientation in relation to the sheet rolling direction as well as the sample width and height of the drawbead. Due to many factors that affect the value of the coefficient of friction coefficient, artificial neural networks (ANNs) were used to build and analyse the friction model. Four training algorithms were used to train the ANNs: back propagation, conjugate gradients, quasi-Newton and Levenberg-Marquardt. It was found that for all analysed friction conditions and sheet strip widths, increasing the drawbead height increases the COF value. The chlorine-based Heavy Draw 1150 compound provides a more effective friction reduction compared to a LAN-46 machine oil.

Abstract
Drilling, cutting, and milling are the most common methods used in orthopedic surgery. However, popular machining methods do not obtain the complex shape of the periarticular tissue surfaces, increasing operation time and patient recovery. This paper reports an attempt to research a novel design of a machining process for surgical procedures. A device using abrasion machining based on mechanical erosion was proposed. Machining uses an undefined geometry of the cutting grains to cut tissue in any direction during oscillatory tool movement. This new concept is based on a cylindrical abrasive device made of brown fused alumina and silicon carbide grains deposited with an epoxy resin binder on the surface of a polyamide shaft. The best results in terms of machining efficiency were obtained for grains of the BFA80 type. Cutting experiments with different values in terms of cutting speed, granulation of the abrasive grains, pressure forces, and machining scope showed that the proposed concept, by developing the shape of the device, allows for penetration of the tissue structure. The research shows the possibility of using the proposed method during periarticular tissue machining.

Abstract
With easy-to-process 3D printing materials and fast production, the quality of dental services can be improved. In the conventional procedure, the dentist makes temporary crowns directly in the patient’s mouth, e.g., from the most commonly used bis-acrylic composites. Temporary crowns made directly in the office without the use of CAD/CAM are often of inferior quality, which directly results in impaired hygiene, poorer masticatory mechanics, greater deposition of plaque, calculus and sediment, and may adversely affect periodontal and gum health. The mechanical strength, resistance to aging and abrasion of 3D printing materials are higher than those of the soft materials used in conventional methods. This translates into durability. The patient leaves the surgery with a restoration of higher utility quality compared to the conventional method. The objective of the paper was to determine the influence of aging in artificial saliva of AM (additive manufacturing) orthodontic composites on their functional properties. For the purpose of the study, fillings well-known worldwide were selected. These were traditional UV-curable resins (M I, M II, M III, M V) and a hybrid material based on a UV-curable resin (M VI). Samples were stored in artificial saliva at 37 ± 1 °C in a thermal chamber for 6 months. Indentation hardness, frictional tests and sliding wear measurements were conducted. A comparison between various materials was made. Descriptive statistics, degradation coefficients, H2E, Archard wear and specific wear rate were calculated. The Weibull statistical test for indentation hardness was performed and Hertzian contact stresses for the frictional association were calculated for unaged (M I, M II, M III, M V, M VI) and aged (M I AS, M II AS, M III AS, M V AS, M VI AS) samples. M I exhibited the lowest average hardness among the unaged materials, while M III AS had the lowest average hardness among the aged materials. Comparably low hardness was demonstrated by the M I AS material. The coefficient of friction values for the aged samples were found to be higher. The lowest wear value was demonstrated by the M I material. The wear resistance of most of the tested materials deteriorated after aging. The M VI AS material had the highest increase in wear. According to the results provided, not only the chemical composition and structure, but also aging have a great impact on the indentation hardness and wear resistance of the tested orthodontic materials.

Abstract
Medical device‐related pressure ulcers (PUs) (injuries) are a subclass of PUs, associated with pressure and/or shear applied by a medical device onto the skin. Clinical application of a cyanoacrylate liquid skin protectant (CLSP) under the contours of skin‐contacting medical devices to shield an intact skin from the sustained mechanical loads that are applied by medical devices is a preventative option, but no computer modelling work has been reported to assess the biomechanical efficacy of such interventions. Here, we investigated the biomechanical protective effect of a polymerised cyanoacrylate coating using three‐dimensional, anatomically realistic finite element models of the ear with oxygen cannula and the mouth with endotracheal attachment device, informed by experimental studies. We have compared tissue stress exposures under the devices at these facial sites between conditions where the cyanoacrylate skin protectant has been applied or where the device was contacting the skin directly, without the shielding of the cyanoacrylate coating. The CLSP considerably reduced the skin stress concentration levels and overall tissue stress exposures under the aforementioned medical devices. This demonstrates strong biomechanical effectiveness of the studied cyanoacrylate‐based skin protectant in prevention of facial medical device‐related injuries at small, curved and thereby difficult to protect facial sites.

Abstract
Occupational ApplicationsSlips and falls are among the most common reason for non-fatal work accidents. Preventing slips in the workplace can be achieved by ensuring sufficient friction between the shoe and floor. As shoes are worn down, there is a decrease in the coefficient of friction, which increases the risk of injury from a slip and fall for the wearer. We found that shoes worn in the workplace commonly had friction performance that is about 25% lower than their new condition and that this effect was largest for shoes with the highest initial friction performance. These results inform the magnitude of improvement in friction performance that can be achieved through footwear replacement programs.

Abstract
Nanodiamond (ND) particles are effective lubricant additives. Attention of research has shifted towards investigating the particles as secondary additives. ND particles provide more benefits as secondary additives than as the sole lubricant additive for steel–steel contacts. In this work, the influence of ND particles as secondary additives on oil lubrication of steel–aluminium tribopair (hard–soft contact) was examined. AISI 52100 steel balls were slid against AA2024 aluminium alloy discs, in the presence of polyalphaolefin (PAO) base oil, in boundary lubrication regime (applied normal load: 10 N to 50 N). Primary additives were copper oxide (CuO) and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) nanoparticles. The addition of ND particles to PAO, with CuO and h-BN as primary additives, at the lowest applied normal load of 10 N: (i) decreased the volumetric wear of the aluminium discs by 28% and 63%, respectively, and (ii) decreased the coefficient of friction by 15% and 33%, respectively. At the highest applied normal load of 50 N, it: (i) decreased the volumetric wear of the aluminium discs by 20% and 38%, respectively, and (ii) decreased the coefficient of friction by 5.4% and 8%, respectively. ND particles as secondary additives significantly reduce energy loss and power loss as a consequence of an effective reduction in friction during sliding. Unique characteristics of ND particles—such as their (a) physicochemical and thermal properties, (b) ball bearing and polishing effects and (c) synergistic interaction with primary additives to form stable tribofilms—enhance the lubrication performance of steel–aluminium contact. ND particles in combination with h-BN nanoparticles showed the best performance, due to better synergy between the primary additive and the secondary additive. Results from the investigation indicate that ND particles taken as secondary additives in small amount (0.2 wt%) can improve oil lubrication performance of hard–soft contacts in engineering systems.

Abstract
This paper presents the application of multi-layer artificial neural networks (ANNs) and backward elimination regression for the prediction of values of the coefficient of friction (COF) of Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy sheets. The results of the strip drawing test were used as data for the training networks. The strip drawing test was carried out under conditions of variable load and variable friction. Selected types of synthetic oils and environmentally friendly bio-degradable lubricants were used in the tests. ANN models were conducted for different network architectures and training methods: the quasi-Newton, Levenberg-Marquardt and back propagation. The values of root mean square (RMS) error and determination coefficient were adopted as evaluation criteria for ANNs. The minimum value of the RMS error for the training set (RMS = 0.0982) and the validation set (RMS = 0.1493) with the highest value of correlation coefficient (R2 = 0.91) was observed for a multi-layer network with eight neurons in the hidden layer trained using the quasi-Newton algorithm. As a result of the non-linear relationship between clamping and friction force, the value of the COF decreased with increasing load. The regression model F-value of 22.13 implies that the model with R2 = 0.6975 is significant. There is only a 0.01% chance that an F-value this large could occur due to noise.

Abstract
A combination of coating deposition and consequent ion implantation could be beneficial in wear-resistant antifriction surface design and modification. In the present paper, the effects of low-energy 60 keV Si-ion implantation on multinanolayered CrN/ZrN grown on a stainless-steel substrate have been investigated. Complementary experimental (X-ray diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive spectroscopy, secondary ion mass spectrometry) and theoretical (first-principles) methods have been employed to investigate the structure, phase, and composition under a 1 × 10-17 cm-2 irradiation dose. This study has revealed a moderate radiation-tolerance of the CrN/ZrN system, with a 26 nm bilayer period, where the effective ion range after irradiation was below 110 nm. Within the ion range, a decrease in composition homogeneity and structure crystallinity has been found. Si negative ions have been distributed asymmetrically with peak concentrations (10 and 6%) occupying the interfaces between the CrN and ZrN layers. First-principles investigations of the CrN/ZrN(001) heterostructures were carried out to validate the experimental results, which showed that the alignment of Si-rich interfaces closer to chromium layers is a consequence of the lower substitution energy of CrN rather than ZrN. Thus, strong Si-Cr bindings and difference in displacement energies of ZrN and CrN have been attributed as the main factors in Si-rich interface formation. The pin-on-ball tribological test results have exposed the enhancement in wear resistance and the friction coefficient of nanoscale coating via amorphous Si particles descending from interfacial areas and acting as a third-body.

Abstract
The study aimed to investigate the control and coordination of grip force (normal component) and load force (tangential component) in three different manipulation tasks in individuals with diabetes with and with no diagnosis of diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) and healthy controls. Twenty-four individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus, 12 with no (nDPN) and 12 with DPN (wDPN), and 12 healthy controls performed three manipulation tasks (static holding, lifting and holding, and oscillation) with the dominant hand, using an instrumented handle. Relative safety margin (% of GF exerted above the minimum GF needed to hold the object) was measured in all tasks. Individuals with diabetes from the nDPN and wDPN groups set lower relative safety margin than controls only in the static holding task. No other group effect was revealed, except a lower coefficient of friction between skin and object surface in individuals with DPN. The coordination between grip and load force and grip force control was not affected by the diabetes during dynamic manipulation tasks (lifting and holding and oscillation). However, when individuals with diabetes without and with DPN performed a manipulation task in which the inflow of cutaneous information was small and stable (static holding), grip force control was affected by the disease. This finding indicates that individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus not diagnosed with DPN, already show mild impairments in the nervous system that could affect grip force control and that could be one of the first signs of neuropathy caused by the diabetes.

Abstract
Waste management is still one of the leading global challenges in the 21st century. From the European Union’s point of view, the Waste Framework Directive obliges businesses and households to recycle at least 55% of their municipal waste by 2025 and to reach 65% in 2035. Hence there is a great need to seek new solutions for the reuse of various waste materials. One of the most widely used wastes is their utilization as fillers or reinforcements in the metal- or polymer-based composites. The reuse of wastes for the production of tribological materials gives not only environmental benefits related to the transformation of waste into raw materials but also may improve the mechanical and tribological properties of such materials. Moreover, the use of waste reduces the production costs resulting from the lower price of filler materials and longer service life of developed products. The purpose of the current review is, therefore, aimed at the evaluation of the reuse of agricultural, industrial and postconsumer wastes as reinforcements in the composites used for tribological applications. The tribological performance (wear rate, coefficient of friction) of both monolithic and hybrid composites reinforced with waste materials was a particular subject of interest in this review.

Abstract
In the field of underwater emergency maintenance, submarine pipeline cutting is generally performed by a diamond wire saw. The process, in essence, involves diamond grits distributed on the surface of the beads cutting X56 pipeline steel bit by bit at high speed. To find the effect of the different parameters (cutting speed, coefficient of friction and depth of cut) on cutting force, the finite element (FEA) method and response surface method (RSM) were adopted to obtain cutting force prediction models. The former was based on 64 simulations; the latter was designed according to DoE (Design of Experiments). Confirmation experiments were executed to validate the regression models. The results indicate that most of the prediction errors were within 10%, which were acceptable in engineering. Based on variance analyses of the RSM models, it could be concluded that the depth of the cut played the most important role in determining the cutting force and coefficient the of friction was less influential. Despite making little direct contribution to the cutting force, the cutting speed is not supposed to be high for reducing the coefficient of friction. The cutting force models are instructive in manufacturing the diamond beads by determining the protrusion height of the diamond grits and the future planning of the cutting parameters.

Abstract
Biomechanical influences play a fundamental role in the structural, functional, and biosynthetic properties of articular cartilage. During physiologic joint loading, the contact area between two surfaces migrates due to the primary and secondary motions of the joint. It has been demonstrated that a migratory contact area plays a critical role in reducing the coefficient of friction at the cartilage surface. However, a detailed analysis of the influences that a migratory contact area plays on the structural, functional, and biosynthetic properties remain to be explored. In this study, bovine cartilage explants were placed in a biotribometer. Explants were subjected to compression and shear forces of migratory contact area, namely moving contact (MC) articulation, or stationary contact area, namely stationary contact (SC) articulation. Free swelling explants were used as control. In a separate study, bovine cartilage-bone grafts were used for frictional testing. On histologic analysis, the SC group had evidence of surface fibrillations, which was not evident in the MC group. Compared to the SC group, the MC group cartilage explants had increased chondrocyte viability, increased lubricin synthesis, and comparable proteoglycan synthesis and release. MC articulation had reduced coefficient of friction as compared to SC articulation. MC articulation led to reduced surface roughness as compared to SC articulation. In conclusion, a migratory contact area can play an important role in maintaining the structural, function, and biosynthetic properties of articular cartilage. This study provides further evidence of the importance of migratory contact area and in vitro assessment of natural joint movement, which can be further evaluated in the context of cartilage homeostasis and disease.

Abstract
Antifriction hybrid fluorinated ethylene propylene-based composites filled with quasicrystalline Al73Cu11Cr16 powder, polytetrafluoroethylene, synthetic graphite and carbon black were elaborated and investigated. Composite samples were formed by high-energy ball milling of initial powders mixture with subsequent consolidation by injection molding. Thermal, mechanical, and tribological properties of the obtained composites were studied. It was found that composite containing 5 wt.% of Al73Cu11Cr16 quasicrystals and 2 wt.% of nanosized polytetrafluoroethylene has 50 times better wear resistance and a 1.5 times lower coefficient of dry friction comparing with unfilled fluorinated ethylene propylene. Addition of 15 wt.% of synthetic graphite to the above mentioned composition allows to achieve an increase in thermal conductivity in 2.5 times comparing with unfilled fluorinated ethylene propylene, at that this composite kept excellent tribological properties.

Abstract
In soft tissue replacement, hydrophilic, flexible, and biocompatible materials are used to reduce wear and coefficient of friction. This study aims to develop and evaluate a solid/liquid triborheological system, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/hyaluronic acid (HA), to mimic conditions in human synovial joints. Hydrogel specimens prepared via the freeze–thawing technique from a 10% (w/v) PVA aqueous solution were cut into disc shapes (5 ± 0.5 mm thickness). Compression tests of PVA hydrogels presented a Young’s modulus of 2.26 ± 0.52 MPa. Friction tests were performed on a Discovery Hybrid Rheometer DHR-3 under physiological conditions using 4 mg/mL HA solution as lubricant at 37 °C. Contact force was applied between 1 and 20 N, highlighting a coefficient of friction change of 0.11 to 0.31 between lubricated and dry states at 3 N load (angular velocity: 40 rad/s). Thermal behavior was evaluated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) in the range of 25–250 °C (5 °C/min rate), showing an endothermic behavior with a melting temperature (Tm) around 231.15 °C. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) tests showed a microporous network that enhanced water content absorption to 82.99 ± 1.5%. Hydrogel achieved solid/liquid lubrication, exhibiting a trapped lubricant pool that supported loads, keeping low coefficient of friction during lubricated tests. In dry tests, interstitial water evaporates continuously without countering sliding movement friction.

Abstract
Braking systems have a direct impact on the safety of road users. That is why it is crucial that the performance of brakes be dependable and faultless. Unfortunately, the operating conditions of brakes during their operating time are affected by many variables, which results in changes in their tribological properties. This article presents an attempt to develop a methodology for studying how the operating time affects the value of the coefficient of friction and the abrasive wear factor. The Taguchi method of process optimization was used to plan the experiment, which was based on tests using the ball-cratering method. The results clearly show that the degree of wear affects the properties of the friction material used in the production process of brakes.

Abstract
Soft elastomers are critical to a broad range of existing and emerging technologies. One major limitation of soft elastomers is the large friction of coefficient (COF) due to inherently large adhesion and internal loss. In applications where lubrication is not applicable, such as soft robotics, wearable electronics, and biomedical devices, elastomers with inherently low dry COF are required. Inspired by the low COF of snakeskins atop soft bodies, this study reports the development of elastomers with low dry COF by growing a hybrid skin layer with a strong interface with a large stiffness gradient. Using a solid-liquid interfacial polymerization (SLIP) process, hybrid skin layers are imparted onto elastomers, which reduces the COF of the elastomers from 1.6 to 0.1, without sacrificing the bulk compliance and ductility of elastomer. Compared with existing surface modification methods, the SLIP process offers spatial control and ability to modify flat, prepatterned, curved, and inner surfaces, which is essential to engineer multifunctional skin layers for emerging applications.

Abstract
This work investigates the structure and chemical states of thin-film coatings obtained by pulsed laser codeposition of Mo and C in a reactive gas (H2S). The coatings were analysed for their prospective use as solid lubricating coatings for friction units operating in extreme conditions. Pulsed laser ablation of molybdenum and graphite targets was accompanied by the effective interaction of the deposited Mo and C layers with the reactive gas and the chemical states of Mo- and C-containing nanophases were interdependent. This had a negative effect on the tribological properties of Mo–S–C–H nanocomposite coatings obtained at H2S pressures of 9 and 18 Pa, which were optimal for obtaining MoS2 and MoS3 coatings, respectively. The best tribological properties were found for the Mo–S–C–H_5.5 coating formed at an H2S pressure of 5.5 Pa. At this pressure, the x = S/Mo ratio in the MoSx nanophase was slightly less than 2, and the a-C(S,H) nanophase contained ~8 at.% S and ~16 at.% H. The a-C(S,H) nanophase with this composition provided a low coefficient of friction (~0.03) at low ambient humidity and 22 °C. The nanophase composition in Mo–S–C–H_5.5 coating demonstrated fairly good antifriction properties and increased wear resistance even at −100 °C. For wet friction conditions, Mo–S–C–H nanocomposite coatings did not have significant advantages in reducing friction compared to the MoS2 and MoS3 coatings formed by reactive pulsed laser deposition.

Abstract
The tribotesting of friction systems requires discussion on proper selection of its conditions and data presentation. System tribology is based, for example, on analysis of the friction contact, the roughness of the cooperating surfaces, and the wear rate of the rubbing elements or coefficient of friction in relation to the sliding distance. Friction pairs, consisting of an aluminum alloy sample with an oxide layer (Al2O3) with and without the addition of inorganic fullerenes like tungsten disulphide (IF-WS2) nanoparticles on its surface cooperating with a counter-sample made of polymer composites prepared on the basis of phenol-formaldehyde resin with different fillers, were tested using a device with a pin-on-plate friction pair system. The results of the experiments showed sufficient durability of the Al2O3 and Al2O3/IF-WS2 oxide coatings in combination with the polymer composite. It was found that resin fillers such as cotton fibers, jute fibers, molybdenum disulphide (MoS2) or graphite (C) influence the friction behavior of the tribological pairs. Although the values of the coefficient of friction obtained in the tests were quite high, their course during the tests ensured stable cooperation of the aluminum coating/polymer composite friction pair on a 15 km distance, under a load of 0.5 MPa. The lowest coefficients of friction were obtained for oxide layers formed on aluminum combined with a polymer composite filled with cotton fibers and graphite. These studies provide information on the tribological properties of commercially available polymer composites cooperating with the produced oxide coatings, supplementing the available literature with the results of research on new, so far unexplored tribological partners. Microscopic investigation of the structure and morphology of the formed surface oxide layers and also microgeometry studies of both the friction elements were used to better understand the obtained research results.
