Phenolic Monoterpenes Conversion of Conobea scoparioides Essential Oil by Hydrotalcite Synthesized from Blast-Furnace Slag

Conobea scoparioides (Plantaginaceae) is an herbaceous plant known as "pataqueira" that grows wild in seasonally wet areas of the Amazon region. It is used for aromatic baths and anti-protozoan remedies by the Brazilian Amazon native people. The main volatile compounds identified in the essential oil of "Pataqueira" were the phenolic monoterpenes thymol and thymol methyl ether and their precursors, the monoterpene hydrocarbons α-phellandrene and p-cymene. A hydrotalcite synthesized from blast-furnace slag exhibited a 3:2 (Mg/Al) molar ratio, and this layered double hydroxide (LDH) was evaluated as a catalyst in converting the main monoterpenes of the "Pataqueira" oil. This action significantly increased the thymol content, from 41% to 95%, associated with the percentual reduction in other main components, such as thymol methyl ether, α-phellandrene, and p-cymene. The LDH reaction showed a strong tendency towards producing hydroxylated derivatives, and its behavior was similar to the hypothetical plant biosynthetic pathway, which leads to the production of the monoterpenes of "Pataqueira" oil. Thymol and its derivatives are potent antiseptics applied in pharmaceutical and hygienic products as antibacterial, antifungal, and antioxidant properties, among others. The present work reports a natural source with a high thymol content in aromatic plants from the Amazon, with evident economic value.

Photo- and Thermocatalytic CO2 Methanation: A Comparison of Ni/Al2O3 and Ni-Ce Hydrotalcite-Derived Materials under UV and Visible Light

Catalysts derived from Ni/Al/Mg/Ce hydrotalcite were prepared via a co-precipitation method, varying the Ce/Al atomic ratio. All of the catalytic systems thus prepared were tested for CO2 methanation under dark and photocatalytic conditions (visible and ultraviolet) under continuous flow with the light intensity set to 2.4 W cm-2. The substitution of Al by Ce formed a solid solution, generating oxygen vacancies and Ce3+/Ce4+ ions that helped shift the dissociation of CO2 towards the production of CH4, thus enhancing the activity of methanation, especially at lower temperatures (<523 K) and with visible light at temperatures where other catalysts were inactive. Additionally, for comparison purposes, Ni/Al2O3-based catalysts prepared via wetness impregnation were synthesized with different Ni loadings. Analytical techniques were used for the characterization of the systems. The best results in terms of activity were as follows: Hydrotalcite with Ce promoter > Hydrotalcite without Ce promoter > 25Ni/Al2O3 > 13Ni/Al2O3. Hydrotalcite, with a Ce/Al atomic ratio of 0.22 and a Ni content of 23 wt%, produced 7.74 mmol CH4 min-1·gcat at 473 K under visible light. Moreover, this catalyst exhibited stable photocatalytic activity during a 24 h reaction time with a CO2 conversion rate of 65% and CH4 selectivity of >98% at 523 K. This photocatalytic Sabatier enhancement achieved activity at lower temperatures than those reported in previous publications.

Chemical Recycling of PET Using Catalysts from Layered Double Hydroxides: Effect of Synthesis Method and Mg-Fe Biocompatible Metals

The chemical recycling of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) residues was performed via glycolysis with ethylene glycol (EG) over Mg-Fe and Mg-Al oxide catalysts derived from layered double hydroxides. Catalysts prepared using the high supersaturation method (h.s.c.) presented a higher surface area and larger particles, but this represented less PET conversion than those prepared by the low supersaturation method (l.s.c.). This difference was attributed to the smaller mass transfer limitations inside the (l.s.c.) catalysts. An artificial neural network model well fitted the PET conversion and bis(2-hydroxyethyl) terephthalate (BHET) yield. The influence of Fe in place of Al resulted in a higher PET conversion of the Mg-Fe-h.s.c. catalyst (~95.8%) than of Mg-Al-h.s.c. (~63%). Mg-Fe catalysts could be reused four to five times with final conversions of up to 97% with reaction conditions of EG: PET = 5:1 and catalyst: PET = 0.5%. These results confirm the Mg-Fe oxides as a biocompatible novel catalyst for the chemical recycling of PET residues to obtain non-toxic BHET for further polymerization, and use in food and beverage packaging.

Highly Selective and Stable Cu Catalysts Based on Ni-Al Catalytic Systems for Bioethanol Upgrading to n-Butanol

The catalytic upgrading of ethanol into butanol through the Guerbet coupling reaction has received increasing attention recently due to the sufficient supply of bioethanol and the versatile applications of butanol. In this work, four different supported Cu catalysts, i.e., Cu/Al2O3, Cu/NiO, Cu/Ni3AlOx, and Cu/Ni1AlOx (Ni2+/Al3+ molar ratios of 3 and 1), were applied to investigate the catalytic performances for ethanol conversion. From the results, Ni-containing catalysts exhibit better reactivity; Al-containing catalysts exhibit better stability; but in terms of ethanol conversion, butanol selectivity, and catalyst stability, a corporative effect between Ni-Al catalytic systems can be clearly observed. Combined characterizations such as XRD, TEM, XPS, H2-TPR, and CO2/NH3-TPD were applied to analyze the properties of different catalysts. Based on the results, Cu species provide the active sites for ethanol dehydrogenation/hydrogenation, and the support derived from Ni-Al-LDH supplies appropriate acid-base sites for the aldol condensation, contributing to the high butanol selectivity. In addition, catalysts with strong reducibility (i.e., Cu/NiO) may be easily deconstructed during catalysis, leading to fast deactivation of the catalysts in the Guerbet coupling process.

Complete Desorption of Hybrid Nanoclays Composed of Hydrotalcite and Disperse Dye

Clays are considered great nanoadsorbents for many materials, including textile dyes. The use of these materials for cleaning textile wastewater is well known; however, it is not at all common to find applications for the hybrid materials formed from the clay and dye. In this work, a dye-loaded clay material was used to make new dye baths and colour a polyester textile substrate. The same hybrid could be used several times as it did not use all the adsorbed dye in a single dyeing. The hybrid obtained from hydrotalcite (nanoclay) and the dispersed red 1 dye was analysed by measuring the colour obtained, carrying out an X-ray diffraction analysis that provided information after each desorption-dyeing process, and using infrared spectroscopy to analyse the specific bands of each characteristic group. Both analyses showed that the amount of dye present in the hybrid decreases. Thermogravimetry (TGA), surface area and porosity measurements (BET), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) tests were conducted. Chemical stability was assessed by subjecting the hybrid to the actions of different reagents. In addition, colour fastness tests were carried out after dyeing and washing the polyester test tubes to check for the correct fixing of the dye to the fibre. These fastness results showed that the dyeing was carried out correctly and as if it was a conventional dyeing process.

Preparation of Original and Calcined Layered Double Hydroxide as Low-Cost Adsorbents: The Role of the Trivalent Cation on Methylene Blue Adsorption

Layered double hydroxides with the hydrotalcite-like structure, containing Mg²⁺, Al³⁺, and Fe³⁺ (with different Al/Fe ratios) in the layers, have been synthesized and fully characterized, as have the mixed oxides formed upon their calcination at 500 °C. Both series of solids (original and calcined ones) have been tested for methylene blue adsorption. In the case of the Fe-containing sample, oxidation of methylene blue takes place simultaneously with adsorption. For the calcined samples, their reconstruction to the hydrotalcite-like structure plays an important role in their adsorption ability.

Preeminent Flame-Retardant and Smoke Suppression Properties of PCaAl-LDHs Nanostructures on Bamboo Scrimber

Bamboo scrimber is widely used in interior decoration, architecture, and many other fields. However, it has caused huge security risks due to its inherent flammability and easy-to-produce toxic volatiles after combustion. In this work, the bamboo scrimber with superior flame retardant and smoke suppression properties was produced via the coupling of phosphocalcium-aluminum hydrotalcite (PCaAl-LDHs) with bamboo bundles. The results demonstrated that the flame-retardant bamboo scrimber (FRBS) heat release rate (HRR) and total heat release (THR) were, respectively, reduced by 34.46% and 15.86% compared with that of untreated bamboo scrimber. At the same time, the unique multi-layer structure of PCaAl-LDHs effectively slowed down the release rate of flue gas by extending its escape path. Cone calorimetry showed that the total smoke emissions (TSR) and specific extinction area (SEA) of FRBS were, respectively, reduced by 65.97% and 85.96% when the concentration of the flame retardant was 2%, which greatly developed the fire safety of the bamboo scrimber. This method not only improves the fire safety of bamboo scrimber but can also be expected to broaden its use scenarios.

The Function of Hydrotalcite as a Support Material in the Alcohol- Assisted Catalytic CO2 Hydrogenation Reaction

The traditional CO2 hydrogenation reaction in gas phase always requires harsh reaction conditions to activate CO2, resulting in huge energy consumption. However, with the assistance of 1-butanol solvent, catalytic CO2 hydrogenation can be proceeded at a mild condition of 170 ᵒC and 30 bars. To further improve the catalytic performance of the widely studied Cu-ZnO-ZrO2 catalyst (CZZ), the catalysts were modified by incorporating hydrotalcite (HTC) as a support material. The addition of HTC significantly improved the copper dispersion and surface area of the catalyst. The performance of CZZ-HTC catalysts was investigated at varying weight percentages of HTC, and all showed higher space-time yield of methanol (STYMeOH) compared to the commercial catalyst. Notably, CZZ-6HTC exhibited the highest methanol selectivity, further highlighting the beneficial role of HTC as a support material.

Fabrication of Swellable Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Polymers for CO2-Assisted Hydration of Propylene Epoxide

Swelling is a very common phenomenon in organic substances. However, the swelling behaviors of inorganic substances had rarely been reported. In this study, a new type of swellable organic-inorganic hybrid polymer (PIL@CHT) was designed and successfully synthesized through free-radical copolymerization of polymerizable phosphonium ionic liquid monomer and vinyl-functionalized hydrotalcite (CHT). The swelling behaviors of PIL@CHT in various solvents with a wide range of Hansen solubility parameters (δ_T) were investigated, and PIL@CHT exhibited excellent swellable capacity in the solvents with δ_T > 24.4 MPa^1/2. The swollen state of the hybrid PIL@CHT in water presented a network structure with a diameter of approximately 8-12 μm, and CHT particles were well dispersed to the channel of PIL. PIL@CHT was applied to catalyze the CO₂-assisted hydration of propylene oxide (PO), in which a cascade reaction including the cycloaddition of CO₂ and PO and the subsequent hydrolysis of propylene carbonate (PC) occurred. PIL@CHT, combining the active sites of PIL and CHT, synergistically catalyzed this cascade reaction and achieved a high yield (93.0%) and selectivity (98.2%) of 1,2-propanediol (1,2-MPG) under a low H₂O/PO ratio of 1.5/1. Moreover, the catalyst could be recycled seven times without any significant loss of catalytic activities and had good substrate generality.

Synthesis, Antifungal Activity, 3D-QSAR and Controlled Release on Hydrotalcite Study of Longifolene-Derived Diphenyl Ether Carboxylic Acid Compounds

Twenty-two novel longifolene-derived diphenyl ether-carboxylic acid compounds 7a-7v were synthesized from renewable biomass resources longifolene, and their structures were confirmed by FT-IR, ¹H NMR, ¹³C NMR, and HRMS. The preliminary evaluation of in vitro antifungal activity displayed that compound 7b presented inhibition rates of 85.9%, 82.7%, 82.7%, and 81.4% against Alternaria solani, Cercospora arachidicola, Rhizoctonia solani, and Physalospora piricola, respectively, and compound 7l possessed inhibition rates of 80.7%, 80.4%, and 80.3% against R. solani, C. arachidicola, P. piricola, respectively, exhibiting excellent and broad-spectrum antifungal activities. Besides, compounds 7f and 7a showed significant antifungal activities with inhibition rates of 81.2% and 80.7% against A.solani, respectively. Meanwhile, a reasonable and effective 3D-QSAR mode (r² = 0.996, q² = 0.572) has been established by the CoMFA method. Furthermore, the drug-loading complexes 7b/MgAl-LDH were prepared and characterized. Their pH-responsive controlled-release behavior was investigated as well. As a result, complex 7b/MgAl-LDH-2 exhibited excellent controlled-releasing performance in the water/ethanol (10:1, v:v) and under a pH of 5.7.

Interfaces and Oxygen Vacancies-Enriched Catalysts Derived from Cu-Mn-Al Hydrotalcite towards High-Efficient Water-Gas Shift Reaction

The water-gas shift (WGS) reaction is an important process in the hydrogen industry, and its catalysts are of vital importance for this process. However, it is still a great challenge to develop catalysts with both high activity and high stability. Herein, a series of high-purity Cu-Mn-Al hydrotalcites with high Cu content have been prepared, and the WGS performance of the Cu-Mn-Al catalysts derived from these hydrotalcites have been studied. The results show that the Cu-Mn-Al catalysts have both outstanding catalytic activity and excellent stability. The optimized Cu-Mn-Al catalyst has displayed a superior reaction rate of 42.6 μmolCO-1⋅gcat-1⋅s-1, while the CO conversion was as high as 96.1% simultaneously. The outstanding catalytic activities of the Cu-Mn-Al catalysts could be ascribed to the enriched interfaces between Cu-containing particles and manganese oxide particles, and/or abundant oxygen vacancies. The excellent catalytic stability of the Cu-Mn-Al catalysts may be benefitting from the low valence state of the manganese of manganese oxides, because the low valence manganese oxides have good anti-sintering properties and can stabilize oxygen vacancies. This study provides an example for the construction of high-performance catalysts by using two-dimensional hydrotalcite materials as precursors.

Biomaterials Based on Organic Polymers and Layered Double Hydroxides Nanocomposites: Drug Delivery and Tissue Engineering

The development of biomaterials has a substantial role in pharmaceutical and medical strategies for the enhancement of life quality. This review work focused on versatile biomaterials based on nanocomposites comprising organic polymers and a class of layered inorganic nanoparticles, aiming for drug delivery (oral, transdermal, and ocular delivery) and tissue engineering (skin and bone therapies). Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) are 2D nanomaterials that can intercalate anionic bioactive species between the layers. The layers can hold metal cations that confer intrinsic biological activity to LDHs as well as biocompatibility. The intercalation of bioactive species between the layers allows the formation of drug delivery systems with elevated loading capacity and modified release profiles promoted by ion exchange and/or solubilization. The capacity of tissue integration, antigenicity, and stimulation of collagen formation, among other beneficial characteristics of LDH, have been observed by in vivo assays. The association between the properties of biocompatible polymers and LDH-drug nanohybrids produces multifunctional nanocomposites compatible with living matter. Such nanocomposites are stimuli-responsive, show appropriate mechanical properties, and can be prepared by creative methods that allow a fine-tuning of drug release. They are processed in the end form of films, beads, gels, monoliths etc., to reach orientated therapeutic applications. Several studies attest to the higher performance of polymer/LDH-drug nanocomposite compared to the LDH-drug hybrid or the free drug.

Dyeing with Hydrotalcite Hybrid Nanoclays and Disperse, Basic and Direct Dyes

Textile effluents are among the most polluting industrial effluents in the world. Textile finishing processes, especially dyeing, discharge large quantities of waste that is difficult to treat, such as dyes. By recovering this material from the water, in addition to cleaning and the possibility of reusing the water, there is the opportunity to reuse this waste as a raw material for dyeing different textile substrates. One of the lines of reuse is the use of hybrid nanoclays obtained from the adsorption of dyes, which allow dye baths to be made for textile substrates. This study analyses how, through the use of the nanoadsorbent hydrotalcite, dyes classified by their charge as anionic, cationic and non-ionic can be adsorbed and recovered for successful reuse in new dye baths. The obtained hybrids were characterised by X-ray diffraction and infrared spectroscopy. In addition, the colour was analysed by spectrophotometer in the UV-VIS range. The dyes made on cotton, polyester and acrylic fabrics are subjected to different colour degradation tests to assess their viability as final products, using reflection spectroscopy to measure the colour attribute before and after the tests, showing results consistent with those of a conventional dye.

Hydrotalcite-Modified Clinoptilolite as the Catalyst for Selective Catalytic Reduction of NO with Ammonia (NH3-SCR)

A series of clinoptilolite-supported catalysts, modified with hydrotalcite-like phase (HT) by co-precipitation, were prepared and tested in NH₃-SCR reactions. It was found that deposition of HT on clinoptilolite increased conversion of NO within 250-450 °C, and that the positive impact on the catalytic activity was independent of HT loading. The promoting effect of clinoptilolite was attributed to Brönsted acid sites present in the zeolite, which facilitated adsorption and accumulation of ammonia during the catalytic process. Concentration of N₂O in the post-reaction gas mixture reached its maximum at 300 °C and the by-product was most likely formed as a consequence of NH₄NO₃ decomposition or side reaction of NH₃ oxidation in the high-temperature region. The gradual elimination of nitrous oxide, noticed as the material with the highest concentration of hydrotalcite phase, was attributed to the abundance of oligomeric iron species and the superior textural parameters of the material. UV-Vis experiments performed on the calcined samples indicated that Fe sites of higher nuclearity were generated by thermal decomposition of the hydrotalcite phase during the catalytic reaction. Therefore, calcination of the materials prior to the catalytic tests was not required to obtain satisfactory overall catalytic performance in NO reductions.

Clay-Catalyzed Ozonation of Hydrotalcite-Extracted Lactic Acid Potential Application for Preventing Milk Fermentation Inhibition

An unprecedented route for mitigating the inhibitory effect of lactic acid (LA) on milk fermentation was achieved through lactate adsorption on hydrotalcite (Ht) from simulated lactate extracts. During its regeneration by ozonation, Ht displayed catalytic activity that appeared to increase by addition of montmorillonite (Mt). Changes in the pH, Zeta potential and catalyst particle size during LA ozonation were found to strongly influence LA–LA, LA–catalyst and catalyst–catalyst interactions. The latter determine lactate protonation–deprotonation and clay dispersion in aqueous media. The activity of Mt appears to involve hydrophobic adsorption of non-dissociated LA molecules on silica-rich areas at low pH, and Lewis acid–base and electrostatic interactions at higher pH than the pKa. Hydrotalcite promotes both hydrophobic interaction and anion exchange. Hydrotalcite–smectite mixture was found to enhance clay dispersion and catalytic activity. This research allowed demonstrating that natural clay minerals can act both as adsorbents for LA extract from fermentation broths and as catalysts for adsorbent regeneration. The results obtained herein provide valuable and useful findings for envisaging seed-free milk clotting in dairy technologies.

Comparative Physicochemical and Catalytic Study of Nanocrystalline Mg-Al Hydrotalcites Precipitated with Inorganic and Organic Bases

Synthetic Mg-Al hydrotalcites (HT) are environmentally friendly solid bases frequently applied as catalysts in base catalyzed reactions. The most common synthesis method, using NaOH as precipitant, is problematized by the possibility of introducing undesired Na contamination. Alkali-free synthesis is usually performed with NH₃aq, a precipitant which is less efficient in incorporation of Mg into HT lattice. In the present work, organic bases, tetrabutylammonium hydroxide and choline hydroxide, were successfully employed as precipitating agents in a new alkali-free route of Mg-Al HT synthesis. HT solids were also obtained with inorganic bases, NH₃aq and NaOH. Characterization with X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis, scanning electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and thermogravimetry/differential scanning calorimetry, confirmed the formation of nanocrystalline HT compounds with all employed bases. HT prepared with NH₃aq exhibited an Mg deficit, which was detrimental to the catalytic activity in base catalyzed reactions. The effect was attributed to the tendency of Mg²⁺ to form ammine complexes, a conclusion supported by quantum mechanical calculations. HT prepared with NaOH showed the highest crystallinity, which was unfavorable for catalytic application. The addition of starch to the synthesis medium provided a means by which to diminish the crystal size of all HT precipitates. Catalytic tests of the Baeyer-Villiger oxidation of cyclohexanone demonstrated that the highest yields of ε-caprolactone were obtained with fine-crystalline HT catalysts prepared with organic bases in the presence of a starch template.

Efficient Removal of Nonylphenol Isomers from Water by Use of Organo-Hydrotalcites

The presence of potent organic endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) in natural aquifers can have adverse impacts on public health and the environment. 4-nonylphenol, one such EDC, can be efficiently removed from water by adsorption onto a clayey material. In this work, we created an effective sorbent for this purpose by using co-precipitation and subsequent ion-exchange to intercalate the organic anion deoxycholate into a Mg/Al hydrotalcite. Intercalating deoxycholate ions increased the organophilicity of the hydrotalcite surface. The solid was used to adsorb 4-nonylphenol at different pollutant concentrations and temperatures. The adsorption process was subjected to a kinetic study. Based on the results, the EDC was adsorbed by chemisorption. In addition, based on the equilibrium isotherms used for the process, the Freundlich model was the most accurate in reproducing the adsorption of 4-nonylphenol onto deoxycholate-intercalated hydrotalcite.

Spectroscopic evaluation of UVI-cement mineral interactions: ettringite and hydrotalcite

Portland cement based grouts used for radioactive waste immobilization contain high replacement levels of supplementary cementitious materials, including blast-furnace slag and fly ash. The minerals formed upon hydration of these cements may have capacity for binding actinide elements present in radioactive waste. In this work, the minerals ettringite (Ca6Al2(SO4)3(OH)12·26H2O) and hydrotalcite (Mg6Al2(OH)16CO3·4H2O) were selected to investigate the importance of minor cement hydrate phases in sequestering and immobilizing UVI from radioactive waste streams. U LIII-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) was used to probe the UVI coordination environment in contact with these minerals. For the first time, solid-state 27Al magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (MAS-NMR) spectroscopy was applied to probe the Al coordination environment in these UVI-contacted minerals and make inferences on the UVI coordination, in conjunction with the X-ray spectroscopy analyses. The U LIII-edge XAS analysis of the UVI-contacted ettringite phases found them to be similar (>∼70%) to the uranyl oxyhydroxides present in a mixed becquerelite/metaschoepite mineral. Fitting of the EXAFS region, in combination with 27Al NMR analysis, indicated that a disordered Ca- or Al-bearing UVI secondary phase also formed. For the UVI-contacted hydrotalcite phases, the XAS and 27Al NMR data were interpreted as being similar to uranyl carbonate, that was likely Mg-containing.

Synthesis of Mg-Al Hydrotalcite Clay with High Adsorption Capacity

A novel Mg-Al metal oxide has been successfully synthesized by the calcination of hierarchical porous Mg-Al hydrotalcite clay obtained by using filter paper as a template under hydrothermal conditions. Various characterizations of the obtained nanoscale oxide particles verified the uniform dispersion of Mg-Al metal oxides on the filter paper fiber, which had a size of 2–20 nm and a highest specific surface area (SSA) of 178.84 m²/g. Structural characterization revealed that the as-prepared Mg-Al metal oxides preserved the tubular morphology of the filter paper fibers. Further experiments showed that the as-synthesized Mg-Al metal oxides, present at concentrations of 0.3 g/L, could efficiently remove sulfonated lignite from oilfield wastewater (initial concentration of 200 mg/L) in a neutral environment (pH = 7) at a temperature of 298 K. An investigation of the reaction kinetics found that the adsorption process of sulfonated lignite (SL) on biomorphic Mg-Al metal oxides fits a Langmuir adsorption model and pseudo-second-order rate equation. Thermodynamic calculations propose that the adsorption of sulfonated lignite was spontaneous, endothermic, and a thermodynamically feasible process.

X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopic Study of Some Organic and Inorganic Modified Clay Minerals

Layered clay systems intercalated with inorganic and organic compounds were analyzed to highlight how XPS can provide information on the different environments surrounding a particular atom as well as provide discernments on the size, coordination, and structural and oxidative transformations of the intercalating/pillaring compounds. XPS data on the intercalation of urea and K-acetate in low- and high-defect kaolinite revealed the interaction of the intercalating group NH2 with the siloxane functional groups in the interlayer surface. The intercalation of HDTMA in Mt demonstrated the use of XPS in monitoring the change in conformation assumed by alkylammonium intercalating compounds in Mt with increasing CEC. Studies on the pillaring of Mt by Al13 and Ga13 by XPS allowed determination of the coordination of the pillaring compound within the Mt layer. Lastly, the intercalation of hexacyanoferrate in hydrotalcite demonstrated the capability of XPS in following changes in the oxidation state of the iron compound. These were gleaned from interpretation of the shifts in binding energies and presence of multiplet splitting in the XPS of the component elements of the minerals or the intercalating compounds.

Co-Precipitated Ni-Mg-Al Hydrotalcite-Derived Catalyst Promoted with Vanadium for CO2 Methanation

Co-precipitated Ni-Mg-Al hydrotalcite-derived catalyst promoted with vanadium were synthesized with different V loadings (0–4 wt%) and studied in CO₂ methanation. The promotion with V significantly changes textural properties (specific surface area and mesoporosity) and improves the dispersion of nickel. Moreover, the vanadium promotion strongly influences the surface basicity by increasing the total number of basic sites. An optimal loading of 2 wt% leads to the highest activity in CO₂ methanation, which is directly correlated with specific surface area, as well as the basic properties of the studied catalysts.

Novel Inorganic Integrated Membrane Electrodes for Membrane Capacitive Deionization

In capacitive deionization (CDI), coion repulsion and Faradaic reactions during charging reduce the charge efficiency (CE), thus limiting the salt adsorption capacity (SAC) and energy efficiency. To overcome these issues, membrane CDI (MCDI) based on the enhanced permselectivity of the anode and cathode is proposed using the ion-exchange polymer as the independent membrane or coating. To develop a novel and cost-effective MCDI system, we fabricated an integrated membrane electrode using a thin layer of the inorganic ion-exchange material coated on the activated carbon (AC) electrode, which effectively improves the ion selectivity. Montmorillonite (MT, Al₂O₉Si₃) and hydrotalcite (HT, Mg₆Al₂(CO₃)(OH)₁₆·4H₂O) were selected as the main active anion- and cation-exchange materials, respectively, for the cathode and anode. The HT-MT MCDI system employing HT-AC and MT-AC electrodes obtained a CE of 90.5% and an SAC of 15.8 mg g^-1 after 100 consecutive cycles (50 h); these values were considerably higher than those of the traditional CDI system employing pristine AC electrodes (initially, a CE of 55% and an SAC of 10.2 mg g^-1, which attenuated continuously to zero, and even "inverted work" occurs after 50 h, i.e., desorption during charging and adsorption during discharging). The HT-MT MCDI system showed moderate tolerance to organic matters during desalination and retained 84% SAC and 89% CE after 70 cycles in 50-200 mg L^-1 sodium alginate. This study demonstrates a simple and cost-effective method for fabricating high-CE electrodes for desalination with great application potential.

Zn Promoted Mg-Al Mixed Oxides-Supported Gold Nanoclusters for Direct Oxidative Esterification of Aldehyde to Ester

The synthesis of ester compounds is one of the most important chemical processes. In this work, Zn-Mg-Al mixed oxides with different Zn²⁺/Mg²⁺ molar ratios were prepared via co-precipitation method and supported gold nanoclusters to study the direct oxidative esterification of aldehyde and alcohol in the presence of molecular oxygen. Various characterization techniques such as N₂-physical adsorption, X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and CO₂ temperature programmed desorption (TPD) were utilized to analyze the structural and electronic properties. Based on the results, the presence of small amounts of Zn²⁺ ions (~5 wt.%) provoked a remarkable modification of the binary Mg-Al system, which enhanced the interaction between gold with the support and reduced the particle size of gold. For oxidative esterification reaction, the Au₂₅/Zn_0.05MgAl-400 catalyst showed the best performance, with the highest turnover frequency (TOF) of 1933 h⁻¹. The active center was believed to be located at the interface between metallic gold with the support, where basic sites contribute a lot to transformation of the substrate.

Hydrotalcite-Niclosamide Nanohybrid as Oral Formulation towards SARS-CoV-2 Viral Infections

COVID-19 has been affecting millions of individuals worldwide and, thus far, there is no accurate therapeutic strategy. This critical situation necessitates novel formulations for already existing, FDA approved, but poorly absorbable drug candidates, such as niclosamide (NIC), which is of great relevance. In this context, we have rationally designed NIC-loaded hydrotalcite composite nanohybrids, which were further coated with Tween 60 or hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose (HPMC), and characterized them in vitro. The optimized nanohybrids showed particle sizes <300 nm and were orally administrated to rats to determine whether they could retain an optimum plasma therapeutic concentration of NIC that would be effective for treating COVID-19. The pharmacokinetic (PK) results clearly indicated that hydrotalcite-based NIC formulations could be highly potential options for treating the ongoing pandemic and we are on our way to understanding the in vivo anti-viral efficacy sooner. It is worth mentioning that hydrotalcite–NIC nanohybrids maintained a therapeutic NIC level, even above the required IC₅₀ value, after just a single administration in 8–12 h. In conclusion, we were very successfully able to develop a NIC oral formulation by immobilizing with hydrotalcite nanoparticles, which were further coated with Tween 60 or HPMC, in order to enhance their emulsification in the gastrointestinal tract.

Influence of Fillers and Ionic Liquids on the Crosslinking and Performance of Natural Rubber Biocomposites

This work concerns the effect of fillers and ionic liquids on the cure characteristics of natural rubber (NR) compounds, as well as the mechanical and thermal properties of the vulcanizates. Three types of white filler were applied, such as cellulose, nanosized silica and hydrotalcite, to modify the performance of NR composites. Additionally, ionic liquids (ILs) with bromide anion and different cations, i.e., 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium (Bmi) and 1-butyl-3-methylpyrrolidinium (Bmpyr), were used to improve the cure characteristics of NR compounds and functional properties of the vulcanizates. The type of filler and the structure of ILs were proved to affect the rheometric properties and cure characteristics of NR compounds as well as the performance of the NR vulcanizates. Owing to the adsorption of curatives onto the surface, silica reduced the activity of the crosslinking system, prolonging the optimal vulcanization time of NR compounds and reducing the crosslinking degree of the elastomer. However, silica-filled NR exhibited the highest thermal stability. Hydrotalcite increased the crosslink density and, consequently, the mechanical properties of the vulcanizates, but deteriorated their thermal stability. ILs beneficially influenced the cure characteristics of NR compounds, as well as the crosslink density and mechanical performance of the vulcanizates, particularly those filled with silica. Cellulose did not significantly affect the vulcanization of NR compounds and crosslink density of the vulcanizates compared to the unfilled elastomer, but deteriorated their tensile strength. On the other hand, cellulose improved the thermal stability and did not considerably alter the damping properties of the vulcanizates.

Electron Donor-Acceptor Effect-Induced Organic/Inorganic Nanohybrids with Low Energy Gap for Highly Efficient Photothermal Therapy

For the design and optimization of near-infrared photothermal nanohybrids, tailoring the energy gap of nanohybrids plays a crucial role in attaining a satisfactory photothermal therapeutic efficacy for cancer and remains a challenge. Herein, we report an electron donor-acceptor effect-induced organic/inorganic nanohybrid with a low energy gap (denoted as ICG/Ag/LDH) by the in situ deposition of Ag nanoparticles onto the CoAl-LDH surface, followed by the coupling of ICG. A combination study verifies that the supported Ag nanoparticles as the electron donor (D) push electrons into the conjugated system of ICG by the electronic interaction between ICG and Ag, while OH groups of LDHs as the electron acceptor (A) pull electrons from the conjugated system of ICG by hydrogen bonding (N···H-O). This induces the formation of the D-A conjugated π-system and has a strong influence on the π-conjugated system of ICG, thus leading to a prominent decrease toward the energy gap and correspondingly an ultra-long redshift (∼115 nm). The resulting ICG/Ag/LDHs show an enhanced photothermal conversion efficiency (∼45.5%) at 808 nm laser exposure, which is ∼1.6 times larger than that of ICG (∼28.4%). Such a high photothermal performance is attributed to the fact that ICG/Ag/LDHs possess a D-π-A hybrid structure and a resulting lower energy gap, thus effectively promoting nonradiative transitions and leading to enhancement of the photothermal effect. Both in vitro and in vivo results confirm the good biocompatible properties and capability of the ICG/Ag/LDHs for NIR-triggered cancer treatment. This research demonstrates a successful paradigm for the rational design and preparation of new nanohybrids through the modulation of electron donor-acceptor effect, which offers a new avenue to achieve efficient phototherapeutic agent for improving the cancer therapeutic outcomes.

Poly(Methyl Methacrylate) Coatings Containing Flame Retardant Additives from Suspensions in Water-2-Propanol

A dip-coating technique is designed for deposition of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) from water/2-propanol mixture, avoiding the use of traditional toxic solvents. Solutions of PMMA macromolecules with high molecular weight (MW) are obtained for a water/2-propanol ratio of 0.15-0.33 and the solubilization mechanism is discussed. The ability to use concentrated PMMA solutions and high MW of the polymer are the key factors for the successful dip coating deposition. The coating mass for 10 g L-1 polymer solutions shows a maximum at a water/2-propanol ratio of 0.25. The deposition yield increases with the polymer concentration increase and with an increasing number of the deposited layers. PMMA deposits protect stainless steel from aqueous corrosion. The coating technique allows for the fabrication of composite coatings, containing flame-retardant materials (FRMs), such as commercial halloysite, huntite, hydrotalcite, and synthesized Al(OH)3, in the PMMA matrix. The FRM content in the coatings is modified by variation of the FRM content in colloidal suspensions. A fundamentally new method is developed, which is based on the salting out aided dispersive extraction of Al(OH)3 from the aqueous synthesis medium to 2-propanol. It is based on the use of hexadecylphosphonic acid molecules as extractors. The method offers advantages of reduced agglomeration.

Dehydrogenative Coupling of Alkanes and Benzene Enhanced by Slurry-Phase Interparticle Hydrogen Transfer

The dehydrogenative coupling reaction of alkanes and benzene has attracted attention as a method of direct conversion of alkanes to raw materials for useful chemical products. Here, we report the first combined catalyst system composed of hydrotalcite-supported palladium and solid acid aluminum-exchanged montmorillonite for the direct alkylation of benzene promoted by slurry-phase interparticle hydrogen transfer at 150 °C. The combination of the two catalytic particles showed excellent activity and achieved the maximum benzene conversion of 21% and target product selectivity of 84% in the reaction of n-heptane and benzene. Our results, thus, provide a feasible strategy to design efficient liquid-phase reaction systems employing simple physical mixing of two catalytic particles.

Hydrotalcite framework stabilized ruthenium nanoparticles (Ru/HTaL): efficient heterogeneous catalyst for the methanolysis of ammonia-borane

Ruthenium nanoparticles stabilized by a hydrotalcite framework (Ru/HTaL) were prepared by following a 2-step procedure comprising a wet-impregnation of ruthenium(III) chloride precatalyst on the surface of HTaL followed by an ammonia-borane (NH₃BH₃) reduction of precatalyst on the HTaL surface all at room temperature. The characterization of Ru/HTaL was done by using various spectroscopic and visualization methods including ICP-OES, P-XRD, FTIR, ¹¹B NMR, XPS, BFTEM, and HRTEM. The sum of the results gained from these analyses has revealed the formation of well-dispersed and highly crystalline ruthenium nanoparticles with a mean diameter of 1.27 ±0.8 nm on HTaL surface. The catalytic performance of Ru/HTaL in terms of activity, selectivity, and stability was investigated in the methanolysis of ammonia-borane (NH₃BH₃ , AB), which has been considered as one of the most promising chemical hydrogen storage materials. It was found that Ru/HTaL can catalyse methanolysis of AB effectively with an initial turnover frequency (TOF) value of 392.77 min^-1 at conversion (>95%) even at room temperature. Moreover, the catalytic stability tests of Ru/HTaL in AB methanolysis showed that Ru/HTaL acts as a highly stable and reusable heterogeneous catalyst in this reaction by preserving more than 95% of its initial activity even at the 5th recycle.

Polymeric Bioadhesive Patch Based on Ketoprofen-Hydrotalcite Hybrid for Local Treatments

Ketoprofen (KET) represents one of the most common drugs used in the topical treatment of pain and inflammations. However, its potential is rather limited due to the very low solubility and photochemical instability. The local administration of KET by conventional products, such as gels, emulgels, creams, and foams, does not guarantee an efficacious and safe treatment because of its low absorption (due to low solubility) and its sensitivity to UV rays. The photodegradation of KET makes many photoproducts responsible for different adverse effects. In the present work, KET was intercalated into the lamellar anionic clay ZnAl-hydrotalcite (ZnAl-HTlc), obtaining the hybrid ZnAl-KET with improved stability to UV rays and water solubility in comparison to the crystalline form (not intercalated KET). The hybrid was then formulated in autoadhesive patches for local pain treatment. The patches were prepared by casting method starting from a hydrogel based on the biocompatible and bioadhesive polymer NaCMC (Sodium carboxymethycellulose) and glycerol as a plasticizing agent. The introduction of ZnAl-KET in the patch composition demonstrated the improvement in the mechanical properties of the formulation. Moreover, a sustained and complete KET release was obtained within 8 h. This allowed reducing the frequency of anti-inflammatory administration, compared to the conventional formulations.

In Situ Spinel Formation in a Smart Nano-Structured Matrix for No-Cement Refractory Castables

The hydration of an equimolar mixture of MgO and Al₂O₃ nano-powders has been proven to be an effective way to synthesize Mg₆Al₂CO₃(OH)₁₆∙4H₂O as a component of a nano-structured matrix and magnesia-alumina spinel precursor for high-performance cement-free corundum-spinel refractory castables. (Mg₃)–OH–brucite sites (417 °C) formed initially within the magnesia–alumina hydrating blended paste were replaced with (Mg₂Al)–OH and (Mg₃)–OH hydrotalcite sites, which were dehydroxylated at 420 °C and 322 °C, respectively. This reorganization was connected with the incorporation of anions and water molecules in the interlayer spacing of hydrotalcite, which was dehydrated at 234 °C. Hence, the thermal decomposition of a nano-structured matrix system containing mainly Mg₆Al₂CO₃(OH)₁₆∙4H₂O consists of a complex sequence of dehydration, dehydroxylation and decarbonization, and this finally leads to the formation of inverse spinel MgAl₂O₄ and periclase MgO through many intermediate stages containing the mixed tetrahedral-octahedral Al phase and MgO-like structure. Hence, the hydraulic bond that primarily existed was replaced by a ceramic bond at a relatively low temperature, i.e., 700 °C, where a spinel was formed. Important changes in oxygen coordination polyhedra around Al³⁺ in the dehydrated-dehydroxylated hydrotalcite occurred between 600 and 1100 °C.

Synthesis of Nanocrystalline Mg-Al Hydrotalcites in the Presence of Starch-the Effect on Structure and Composition

The study describes the synthesis of Mg-Al hydrotalcite (Ht) with the use of starch as a structure controlling biotemplate. Syntheses were carried out at room temperature, by co-precipitation at pH = 10. The investigated synthesis parameters included the nature of the precipitating agent (NaOH/Na₂CO₃ or NH₃aq/(NH₄)₂CO₃), the nature of starch (potato, corn and cassava), the method of starch addition to reagents, the method of drying and the effect of washing. The materials were examined with X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and infrared spectroscopy. The data show that synthesis of Ht materials in the presence of starch, with use of the ammonia-based precipitant, enabled preparation of nanocrystalline Ht with very fine (<50 nm) particle size. All investigated starches had a similar effect on the crystallinity and the grain size of Ht precipitates. Ht with the smallest nanocrystals was obtained when starch was present in all solutions used for synthesis, and the final product subjected to freeze drying. Washing with water was found to enhance recrystallization and exchange of nitrates for carbonates. Infrared spectra showed that an interaction exists between the biopolymer template and the Ht particles, resulting in a higher degree of order within the Ht-adhering starch component.

Microwave-Assisted Decarbonylation of Biomass-Derived Aldehydes using Pd-Doped Hydrotalcites

Catalytic decarbonylation is an underexplored strategy for deoxygenation of biomass-derived aldehydes owing to a lack of low-cost and robust heterogeneous catalysts that can operate in benign solvents. A family of Pd-functionalized hydrotalcites (Pd-HTs) were synthesized, characterized, and applied to the decarbonylation of furfural, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), and aromatic and aliphatic aldehydes under microwave conditions. This catalytic system delivered enhanced decarbonylation yields and turnover frequencies, even at a low Pd loading (0.5 mol %). Furfural decarbonylation was optimized in a benign solvent (ethanol) compatible with biomass processing; HMF selectively afforded an excellent yield (93 %) of furfuryl alcohol without humin formation; however, a longer reaction favored the formation of furan through tandem alcohol dehydrogenation and decarbonylation. Yields of the substituted benzaldehydes (37-99 %) were proportional to the calculated Mulliken charge of the carbonyl carbon. Activity and selectivity reflected loading-dependent Pd speciation. Continuous-flow testing of the best Pd-HT catalyst delivered good stability over 16 h on stream, with near-quantitative conversion of HMF.

Dentifrice Based on Fluoride-Hydrotalcite Compounds: Characterization and Release Capacity Evaluation by Novel In Vitro Methods

Anti-caries activity of fluoride ions is due to the protection against demineralization and the enhancement of remineralization of tooth enamel. Dentifrices available on the market contain sodium fluoride, sodium monofluorophosphate, stannous fluoride, and amine fluoride as source of these ions. A new compound working both as fluoride ion source and as abrasive was projected. Hybrids based on F^- ions intercalated between the lamellae of hydrotalcite-like compounds (HTlc-F), namely MgAl-HTlc-F and ZnAl-HTlc-F, were prepared and characterized. Then, three different percentages (2, 3, and 4%) of both HTlc-F compounds were assayed. After the rheological characterization, the dentifrices containing 3 and 4% of MgAl-HTlc-F and ZnAl-HTlc-F, respectively, resulted to be the most suitable ones. Two novel in vitro methods, "rotary toothbrush method" and "manual brushing method," were developed and used in order to study the F^- ions release from the prepared dentifrices. The obtained results showed that the dentifrice containing ZnAl-HTlc-F (4%) was the most effective in releasing fluoride ions. The "rotary toothbrush method" resulted to be the most suitable as the simulation of the brushing movements is standardizable and reproducible.

Dynamics of Clay-Intercalated Ibuprofen Studied by Solid State Nuclear Magnetic Resonance

In designing drug delivery systems with improved release properties and bioavailability, the dynamic features of the active pharmaceutical ingredient can be crucial for the final product properties. In this work, we aimed at obtaining the first characterization of the molecular dynamic properties of one of the most common nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug, ibuprofen, intercalated in hydrotalcite, an interesting inorganic carrier. By exploiting a variety of solid state NMR techniques, including ¹H and ¹³C MAS spectra and T₁ relaxation measurements, performed at variable temperature and carrying out a synergic analysis of all results, it has been possible to ascertain that the mobility of ibuprofen within the carrier is remarkably increased. In particular, strong indications have been obtained that ibuprofen molecules, in addition to internal interconformational dynamics, experience an overall molecular motion. Also considering that ibuprofen is "anchored" to the charged surface of the hydrotalcite layers through its carboxylate moiety, such motion could be a wobbling-in-a-cone. Activation energies and correlation times of all the motions of intercalated ibuprofen have been determined.

Evaluation of a Catalyst Durability in Absence and Presence of Toluene Impurity: Case of the Material Co2Ni2Mg2Al2 Mixed Oxide Prepared by Hydrotalcite Route in Methane Dry Reforming to Produce Energy

Ni, Co, Mg, and Al mixed-oxide solids, synthesized via the hydrotalcite route, were investigated in previous works toward the dry reforming of methane for hydrogen production. The oxide Co₂Ni₂Mg₂Al₂ calcined at 800 °C, Co₂Ni₂Mg₂Al₂800, showed the highest catalytic activity in the studied series, which was ascribable to an interaction between Ni and Co, which is optimal for this Co/Ni ratio. In the present study, Co₂Ni₂Mg₂Al₂800 was compared to a commercial catalyst widely used in the industry, Ni(50%)/Al₂O₃, and showed better activity despite its lower number of active sites, as well as lower amounts of carbon on its surface, i.e. less deactivation. In addition to this, Co₂Ni₂Mg₂Al₂800 showed stability for 20 h under stream during the dry reforming of methane. This good durability is attributed to a periodic cycle of carbon deposition and removal as well as to the strong interaction between Ni and Co, preventing the deactivation of the catalyst. The evaluation of the catalytic performances in the presence of toluene, which is an impurity that exists in biogas, is also a part of this work. In the presence of toluene, the catalytic activity of Co₂Ni₂Mg₂Al₂800 decreases, and higher carbon formation on the catalyst surface is detected. Toluene adsorption on catalytic sites, side reactions performed by toluene, and the competition between toluene and methane in the reaction with carbon dioxide are the main reasons for such results.

A Double Barrier Technique with Hydrotalcites for Pb Immobilisation from Electric Arc Furnace Dust

A new line of mortars incorporating hydrotalcites was developed. This research article shows the results of a study of a double barrier technique (DBT) for Pb immobilisation from electric arc furnace dust (EAFD) in mortars with the addition of three different hydrotalcites (H1, H2, and H3). Electric arc furnace dust (EAFD) is a hazardous waste due to its heavy metal leachability. The aim was to obtain a mortar in which, due to its chemical composition, heavy metal leaching satisfied environmental criteria. Previously, a physical and chemical characterisation of mortar material components was carried out. The leaching behaviour of Pb from EAFD in double barrier (DB) mortars with different hydrotalcites was analysed for compressive strength to determine treatment effectiveness. DB mortars could be considered monoliths because their compressive strengths were higher than 1 MPa but exhibited a decrease due to hydrotalcite incorporation. The mortar EAFD25_H2 (with ethylenediaminetetraacetate (EDTA) in the interlayer of the hydrotalcite) showed one minor reduction in compressive strength with respect to the reference mortar because formation of Portlandite was observed, which is a characteristic of cement hydration. The conventional immobilisation mortar (EAFD25) did not achieve Pb immobilisation. However, DB mortars with dimercaptosuccinate (DMSA) in the interlayer of the hydrotalcite reduced Pb release by ~50%, from 20.29 mg kg⁻¹ (EAFD25) to 9.88 mg kg⁻¹ (EAFD25_H3). In addition, EAFD25_H3 included the lowest hydrotalcite content, thereby improving the immobilisation ratio. The results of this study contribute to better Pb immobilisation, thus satisfying environmental criteria.

Efficient Vapor-Phase Selective Hydrogenolysis of Bio-Levulinic Acid to γ-Valerolactone Using Cu Supported on Hydrotalcite Catalysts

In this work, Cu nanoparticles (Cu NPs, 2-20 nm) supported on Hydrotalcite catalysts exhibit enhanced selectivity for γ-valerolactone (GVL) during hydrogenolysis of levulinic acid (LA). At 260 °C, over 3 wt% Cu achieved 87.5% of LA conversion with a maximum GVL selectivity (95%). In contrast, LA hydrogenolysis over 3Cu/Hydrotalcite catalyst is highly active and stable toward the production of GVL due to balanced acido-basicity and higher Cu dispersion with ultrasmall particle sizes, which are investigated through the temperature programmed desorption (TPD) of ammonia, N2O titration, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis. Hydrotalcite in combination with inexpensive Cu catalyst is found to be an efficient and environmentally benign for LA hydrogenolysis.

Research Progress of NiMn Layered Double Hydroxides for Supercapacitors: A Review

The research on supercapacitors has been attractive due to their large power density, fast charge/discharge speed and long lifespan. The electrode materials for supercapacitors are thus intensively investigated to improve the electrochemical performances. Various transition metal layered double hydroxides (LDHs) with a hydrotalcite-like structure have been developed to be promising electrode materials. Earth-abundant metal hydroxides are very suitable electrode materials due to the low cost and high specific capacity. This is a review paper on NiMn LDHs for supercapacitor application. We focus particularly on the recent published papers using NiMn LDHs as electrode materials for supercapacitors. The preparation methods for NiMn LDHs are introduced first. Then, the structural design and chemical modification of NiMn LDH materials, as well as the composites and films derived from NiMn LDHs are discussed. These approaches are proven to be effective to enhance the performance of supercapacitor. Finally, the reports related to NiMn LDH-based asymmetric supercapacitors are summarized. A brief discussion of the future development of NiMn LDHs is also provided.

Hydrotalcite Can Prevent the Damaging Effects of Helicobacter Pylori on Gastric Epithelial Cells

BACKGROUND

Helicobacter pylori is a major cause of gastric diseases including gastric cancer. This study was aimed to explore whether hydrotalcite can inhibit H. pylori infection of gastric epithelial cells.

METHODS

the gastric epithelial cell line GES-1 and the gastric cancer cell line BGC823 were infected with H. pylori at multiplicities of infections (MOIs) of 50:1 and 100:1. Hydrotalcite was added to cell cultures. Cell apoptosis and cell cycle analysis were performed to measure the situation of cell growth. The main changes of cell ultrastructure were observed by transmission electron microscopy. H. pylori cell adhesion was observed by scanning electron microscopy.

RESULTS

hydrotalcite could significantly inhibit cell apoptosis of GES-1 and cell proliferation of BGC823 induced by H. pylori infection at an MOI of 50:1. Hydrotalcite treatment protected gastric cells from H. pylori infection, and H. pylori adhesion to gastric cells was reduced. However, hydrotalcite could not reverse damage induced by H. pylori infection at an MOI of 100:1.

CONCLUSION

hydrotalcite can protect gastric cells from H. pylori infection when cell damage is not serious. It can weaken the damage of cells induced by H. pylori and decrease H. pylori adhesion to gastric cells.

Controlled release of organic-inorganic nanohybrid:cefadroxil intercalated Zn-Al-layered double hydroxide

BACKGROUND

The intercalation of an antibiotic drug, cefadroxil (CD), into the inter-gallery of Zn, Al nitrate-layered double hydroxide (LDH) was accomplished using a co-precipitation method. This formed a nanostructured organic-inorganic hybrid material that can be exploited for the preparation of a controlled release formulation.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The drug-LDH nanohybrid was characterized by using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) thermogravimetric (TG) analysis, X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and UV-visible (UV-vis) absorption spectroscopy, which confirmed the intercalation process. Release tests of nanohybrid in the presence or absence of NaCl or poly-acrylamide (PAM) were performed in vitro in gastric (pH 1.2), lysosomal (pH 4.0), intestinal (pH 6.8) and blood (pH 7.4) simulated fluid using UV-vis spectroscopy.

RESULTS

At pH 1.2, LDH was dissolved and intercalated antibiotic released from ZnAl-CD in a molecular form, which led to a significant increase in the antibiotic's solubility. Results showed that the release of drug from nanohybrid at pH 4.0, 6.8 and 7.4 was a sustained process.

CONCLUSION

This material might reduce side effects by the release of the drug in a controlled manner. However, it was found that the presence of Cl or PAM species in the release media has a negative impact on the release behavior. The weathering mechanism is responsible for the release of CD from the nanocomposite at pH 1.2, while the mechanism of anion exchange may be responsible for the release behavior at pH 4.0, 6.8 and 7.4. A number of kinetic models were chosen to gain more insights into the mechanisms of drug release. At pH 1.2, the zero-order model most satisfactorily explained the release kinetics of CD, while the release data of CD at pH 4.0, 6.8 and 7.4 were governed by Bhaskar kinetics.

Improving the Flame Retardant Efficiency of Layer by Layer Coatings Containing Deoxyribonucleic Acid by Post-Diffusion of Hydrotalcite Nanoparticles

This work deals with the use of hydrotalcite nanoparticle post-diffusion in layer by layer (LbL) coatings with the aim of improving their flame retardant action on cotton. The selected LbL components, which encompass polydiallyldimethylammonium chloride and deoxyribonucleic acid, aim at the deposition of an intumescent coating. Infrared spectra pointed out a super-linear growth of the investigated assembly, indicating the ability to deposit thick coatings while maintaining a relatively low deposition number. A post-diffusion process, performed by exposing the LbL-treated fabrics to two different concentrations of hydrotalcite water suspensions (0.1 or 1 wt %), was carried out to improve the fireproofing efficiency of these coatings. Coatings treated with the lowest concentration suspension partially swelled as a consequence of their structural rearrangements while the use of the highest concentration led to nanoparticle aggregates. Horizontal flame spread tests were used for assessing the achieved flame retardant properties. The post-diffusion performed at the lowest hydrotalcite concentration lowers the minimum number of Bi-Layers required for obtaining cotton self-extinguishment while samples treated with the highest concentration showed detrimental effects on the performances of treated fabrics. This behavior is ascribed to the effects of hydrotalcite particles on the intumescence of LbL coatings, as evidenced by the morphological analyses of post-combustion residues.

Nanostructured hybrids for the improvement of folic acid biopharmaceutical properties

OBJECTIVES

Folic acid (FA) is an important source for the prevention of many diseases. However, its use is limited because the very low solubility (<10 mg/l particularly in the gastric environment) responsible for the incomplete adsorption of the administered dose. This study proposes a technological strategy to overcome this problem enhancing FA dissolution rate by means of a formulation able to make completely bioavailable the whole administered dose.

METHODS

Folic acid was intercalated in the layered double hydroxides (LDHs) MgAl-LDH and ZnAl-LDH. The obtained inorganic-organic nanostructured hybrids MgAl-LDH-FA and ZnAl-LDH-FA were deeply characterized and used to prepare immediate release tablets presenting very simple compositions. The hybrids, both as simple powders and as tablets, were submitted to in-vitro release studies mimic the gastric environment conducted both in sink and non-sink conditions.

KEY FINDINGS

Folic acid release from hybrids, as single powders or as tablets, resulted enhanced in both experiments in comparison with crystalline FA.

CONCLUSIONS

Obtained results showed that FA-LDH nanostructured hybrids are a promising strategy able to enhance the active ingredient dissolution at low pH values representing a promising approach suitable to realize innovative and effective nutraceutical products.

Efficient Removal of Cationic and Anionic Radioactive Pollutants from Water Using Hydrotalcite-Based Getters

Hydrotalcite (HT)-based materials are usually applied to capture anionic pollutants in aqueous solutions. Generally considered anion exchangers, their ability to capture radioactive cations is rarely exploited. In the present work, we explored the ability of pristine and calcined HT getters to effectively capture radioactive cations (Sr(2+) and Ba(2+)) which can be securely stabilized at the getter surface. It is found that calcined HT outperforms its pristine counterpart in cation removal ability. Meanwhile, a novel anion removal mechanism targeting radioactive I(-) is demonstrated. This approach involves HT surface modification with silver species, namely, Ag2CO3 nanoparticles, which can attach firmly on HT surface by forming coherent interface. This HT-based anion getter can be further used to capture I(-) in aqueous solution. The observed I(-) uptake mechanism is distinctly different from the widely reported ion exchange mechanism of HT and much more efficient. As a result of the high local concentrations of precipitants on the getters, radioactive ions in water can be readily immobilized onto the getter surface by forming precipitates. The secured ionic pollutants can be subsequently removed from water by filtration or sedimentation for safe disposal. Overall, these stable, inexpensive getters are the materials of choice for removal of trace ionic pollutants from bulk radioactive liquids, especially during episodic environmental crisis.

High-Temperature CO2 Sorption on Hydrotalcite Having a High Mg/Al Molar Ratio

Hydrotalcites having a Mg/Al molar ratio between 3 and 30 have been synthesized as promising high-temperature CO2 sorbents. The existence of NaNO3 in the hydrotalcite structure, which originates from excess magnesium nitrate in the precursor, markedly increases CO2 sorption uptake by hydrotalcite up to the record high value of 9.27 mol kg(-1) at 240 °C and 1 atm CO2.

Randomized controlled trial of cholestyramine and hydrotalcite to eliminate bile for capsule endoscopy

BACKGROUND/AIMS

Bile is the main cause of poor bowel preparation for capsule endoscopy (CE). We aimed to determine whether cholestyramine and hydrotalcite can eliminate bile in the bowel.

PATIENTS AND METHODS

Patients undergoing CE were randomized into two groups. Group A patients (n = 75) received 250 mL 20% mannitol and 1 L 0.9% saline orally at 20:00 hours on the day before and at 05:00 hours on the day of CE and 20 mL simethicone 30 min before CE. Group B patients (n = 73) were treated identically, except for taking oral cholestyramine and hydrotalcite, starting 3 days before CE. Greenish luminal contents were assessed by four tissue color bar segments using Color Area Statistics software. Bowel cleanliness was evaluated by visualized area percentage assessment of cleansing (AAC) score.

RESULT

Bowel cleanliness (82.7% [62/75] vs 46.6% [34/73]; χ2 = 14.596, P = 0.000). and detected greenish luminal contents (20.0% [15/75] vs 8.2% [6/73]; χ2 = 4.217, P = 0.040) were significantly greater in Group A than in Group B. Greenish luminal contents in the two groups differed significantly in the captured small-bowel (t = -13.74, P = 0.000) segments and proximal small-bowel (t = -0.7365, P = 0.000) segments, but not for the distal small-bowel (t = -0.552, P = 0.581) segments.

CONCLUSIONS

Cholestyramine and hydrotalcite were ineffective in eliminating bile and improving small-bowel preparation.

Multifunctional Pd/Ni-Co catalyst for hydrogen production by chemical looping coupled with steam reforming of acetic acid

High yield of high-purity H2 from acetic acid, a model compound of bio-oil obtained from the fast pyrolysis of biomass, was produced by sorption-enhanced steam reforming (SESR). An oxygen carrier was introduced into a chemical loop (CL) coupled to the cyclical SESR process to supply heat in situ for the endothermic sorbent regeneration to increase the energy efficiency of the process. A new multifunctional 1 %Pd/20 %Ni-20 %Co catalyst was developed for use both as oxygen carrier in the CL and as reforming catalyst in the SESR whereas a CaO-based material was used as CO2 sorbent. In the sorbent-air regeneration step, the Ni-Co atoms in the catalyst undergo strong exothermic oxidation reactions that provide heat for the CaO decarbonation. The addition of Pd to the Ni-Co catalyst makes the catalyst active throughout the whole SESR-CL cycle. Pd significantly promotes the reduction of Ni-Co oxides to metallic Ni-Co during the reforming stage, which avoids the need for a reduction step after regeneration. H2 yield above 90 % and H2 purity above 99.2 vol % were obtained.

Effect of Isomorphous Substitution on the Thermal Decomposition Mechanism of Hydrotalcites

Hydrotalcites have many important applications in catalysis, wastewater treatment, gene delivery and polymer stabilization, all depending on preparation history and treatment scenarios. In catalysis and polymer stabilization, thermal decomposition is of great importance. Hydrotalcites form easily with atmospheric carbon dioxide and often interfere with the study of other anion containing systems, particularly if formed at room temperature. The dehydroxylation and decomposition of carbonate occurs simultaneously, making it difficult to distinguish the dehydroxylation mechanisms directly. To date, the majority of work on understanding the decomposition mechanism has utilized hydrotalcite precipitated at room temperature. In this study, evolved gas analysis combined with thermal analysis has been used to show that CO₂ contamination is problematic in materials being formed at RT that are poorly crystalline. This has led to some dispute as to the nature of the dehydroxylation mechanism. In this paper, data for the thermal decomposition of the chloride form of hydrotalcite are reported. In addition, carbonate-free hydrotalcites have been synthesized with different charge densities and at different growth temperatures. This combination of parameters has allowed a better understanding of the mechanism of dehydroxylation and the role that isomorphous substitution plays in these mechanisms to be delineated. In addition, the effect of anion type on thermal stability is also reported. A stepwise dehydroxylation model is proposed that is mediated by the level of aluminum substitution.

Chemocatalytic upgrading of tailored fermentation products toward biodiesel

Biological and chemocatalytic processes are tailored in order to maximize the production of sustainable biodiesel from lignocellulosic sugar. Thus, the combination of hydrotalcite-supported copper(II) and palladium(0) catalysts with a modification of the fermentation from acetone-butanol-ethanol to isopropanol-butanol-ethanol predictably produces higher concentrations of diesel-range components in the alkylation reaction.

The efficacy, safety and cost-effectiveness of hydrotalcite versus esomeprazole in on-demand therapy of NERD: A multicenter, randomized, open-label study in China

OBJECTIVE

The aim of the study was to investigate whether hydrotalcite was comparable to esomeprazole, a proton pump inhibitor, in on-demand therapy for non-erosive reflux disease (NERD).

METHODS

This was a multicenter, randomized, open-label clinical trial with initial and on-demand therapy. Patients who had complete symptom relief in the initial therapy were randomized to either hydrotalcite or esomeprazole in the on-demand therapy. The percentage of patients who quit on-demand therapy in the two groups and the cost-effectiveness of the treatment were evaluated as primary end points. The rate of symptom relief and the improvement of symptom score for initial therapy and the weekly average symptom score and weekly average number of days on treatment for on-demand therapy were evaluated as secondary end points.

RESULTS

In total, 398 patients were recruited in the initial therapy group, among whom 253 were included in on-demand therapy, with 127 patients in the hydrotalcite group and the remaining 126 in the esomeprazole group. 14 (11.0%) patients in the hydrotalcite group and six (4.8%) in the esomeprazole group quit the on-demand therapy due to unsatisfactory symptom control (P = 0.065). Cost-effectiveness calculated as the ratio of the cost of hydrotalcite to that of esomeprazole (per person/day) was 35.3% in the on-demand therapy. Similar number of patients achieved symptom relief in both groups.

CONCLUSION

Hydrotalcite is a good option of on-demand therapy for NERD patients due to its cost-effectiveness and speed of action.
