Design and Simulation of the Microcantilever Biosensor for MITF Antigen and D5 Monoclonal Antibody Interaction Finite Element Analysis, and Experimental

BACKGROUND

Biosensors and MEMS have witnessed rapid development and enormous interest over the past decades. Constant advancement in diagnostic, medical, and chemical applications has been demonstrated in several platforms and tools. In this study, the analytical and FEA of the microcantilever used in biomolecular analyses were compared with the experimental analysis results.

METHODS

In this study, MITF antigen, which is a melanoma biomarker, and anti-MITF antibody (D5) were selected as biomolecules. A MEMS-type microcantilever biosensor was designed by functionalizing the AFM cantilever by utilizing the specific interaction dynamics and intermolecular binding ability between both molecules. Surface functionalization of cantilever micro biosensors was performed by using FEA. The stress that will occur as a result of the interactions between the MITF-D5 has been determined from the deviation in the resonant frequency of the cantilever.

RESULTS

It has been found that the simulation results are supported by analytical calculations and experimental results.

CONCLUSION

The fact that the results of the simulation study overlap with the experimental and mathematical results allows us to get much cheaper and faster answers compared to expensive and time-consuming experimental approaches.

Identifying, Resolving, and Quantifying Anisotropy in ReS2 Nanomechanical Resonators

As an emerging two-dimensional semiconductor, rhenium disulfide (ReS₂ ) is renowned for its strong in-plane anisotropy in electrical, optical, and thermal properties. In contrast to the electrical, optical, optoelectrical, and thermal anisotropies that are extensively studied in ReS₂ , experimental characterization of mechanical properties has largely remained elusive. Here, it is demonstrated that the dynamic response in ReS₂ nanomechanical resonators can be leveraged to unambiguously resolve such disputes. Using anisotropic modal analysis, the parameter space for ReS₂ resonators in which mechanical anisotropy is best manifested in resonant responses is determined. By measuring their dynamic response in both spectral and spatial domains using resonant nanomechanical spectromicroscopy, it is clearly shown that ReS₂ crystal is mechanically anisotropic. Through fitting numerical models to experimental results, it is quantitatively determined that the in-plane Young's moduli are 127 and 201 GPa along the two orthogonal mechanical axes. In combination with polarized reflectance measurements, it is shown that the mechanical soft axis aligns with the Re-Re chain in the ReS₂ crystal. These results demonstrate that dynamic responses in nanomechanical devices can offer important insights into intrinsic properties in 2D crystals and provide design guidelines for future nanodevices with anisotropic resonant responses.

Detection of Material Degradation of a Composite Cylinder Using Mode Shapes and Convolutional Neural Networks

This paper presents a numerical study of the feasibility of using vibration mode shapes to identify material degradation in composite structures. The considered structure is a multilayer composite cylinder, while the material degradation zone is, for simplicity, considered a square section of the lateral surface of the cylinder. The material degradation zone size and location along the cylinder axis are identified using a deep learning approach (convolutional neural networks, CNNs, are applied) on the basis of previously identified vibration mode shapes. The different numbers and combinations of identified mode shapes used to assess the damaged zone size and location were analyzed in detail. The final selection of mode shapes considered in the identification procedure yielded high accuracy in the identification of the degradation zone.

Combined Use of Modal Analysis and Machine Learning for Materials Classification

The present study deals with modal work that is a type of framework for structural dynamic testing of linear structures. Modal analysis is a powerful tool that works on the modal parameters to ensure the safety of materials and eliminate the failure possibilities. The concept of classification through this study is validated for isotropic and orthotropic materials, reaching up to a 100% accuracy when deploying the machine learning approach between the mode number and the associated frequency of the interrelated variables that were extracted from modal analysis performed by ANSYS. This study shows a new classification method dependent only on the knowledge of resonance frequency of a specific material and opens new directions for future developments to create a single device that can identify and classify different engineering materials.

Identification of Mode Shapes of a Composite Cylinder Using Convolutional Neural Networks

The aim of the following paper is to discuss a newly developed approach for the identification of vibration mode shapes of multilayer composite structures. To overcome the limitations of the approaches based on image analysis (two-dimensional structures, high spatial resolution of mode shapes description), convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are applied to create a three-dimensional mode shapes identification algorithm with a significantly reduced number of mode shape vector coordinates. The CNN-based procedure is accurate, effective, and robust to noisy input data. The appearance of local damage is not an obstacle. The change of the material and the occurrence of local material degradation do not affect the accuracy of the method. Moreover, the application of the proposed identification method allows identifying the material degradation occurrence.

Role of Sensors in Error Propagation with the Dynamic Constrained Observability Method

The inverse problem of structural system identification is prone to ill-conditioning issues; thus, uniqueness and stability cannot be guaranteed. This issue tends to amplify the error propagation of both the epistemic and aleatory uncertainties, where aleatory uncertainty is related to the accuracy and the quality of sensors. The analysis of uncertainty quantification (UQ) is necessary to assess the effect of uncertainties on the estimated parameters. A literature review is conducted in this paper to check the state of existing approaches for efficient UQ in the parameter identification field. It is identified that the proposed dynamic constrained observability method (COM) can make up for some of the shortcomings of existing methods. After that, the COM is used to analyze a real bridge. The result is compared with the existing method, demonstrating its applicability and correct performance by a reinforced concrete beam. In addition, during the bridge system identification by COM, it is found that the best measurement set in terms of the range will depend on whether the epistemic uncertainty involved or not. It is concluded that, because the epistemic uncertainty will be removed as the knowledge of the structure increases, the optimum sensor placement should be achieved considering not only the accuracy of sensors, but also the unknown structural part.

Acoustics of ping-pong: Vibroacoustic analysis of table tennis rackets and balls

The sound resulting from the impact of a table tennis racket and ball can influence a player's perception of equipment quality in addition to providing clues to personal performance. This study explores the vibrational modes of both racket and ball and how those modes contribute to the impact sound. Experimental modal analysis reveals that the racket exhibits a large number of structural vibration modes typical of elliptical plates. Acoustic analysis reveals that two of those structural modes dominate the sound produced by the ball-paddle impact. The rubber padding provides some damping and a significant mass loading to the racket vibrations. The hollow cellulose nitrate balls exhibit vibrational modes typical of a hollow spherical shell, starting with frequencies around 5920 Hz. Experimental frequencies confirm theoretical and computational models. However, the contact time between racket and ball is long enough that the lowest acoustic modes of the ball do not contribute to the radiated sound. Instead, acoustic analysis suggests that the ball appears to radiate sound at a much higher frequency sound (8.5-12 kHz) most likely due to snap-through after buckling common to spherical shells undergoing deformation while impacting a rigid surface at high speeds.

Evaluation of wafer bonded CMUTs with rectangular membranes featuring high fill factor

Increasing fill factor is one design approach used to increase average output displacement, output pressure, and sensitivity of capacitive micromachined ultrasonic transducers (CMUTs). For rectangular cells, the cell-to-cell spacing and the aspect ratio determine the fill factor. In this paper, we explore the effects of these parameters on performance, in particular the nonuniformity of collapse voltage between neighboring cells and presence of higher order modes in air or immersed operation. We used a white light interferometer to measure nonuniformity in deflection between neighboring cells. We found that reducing the cell-to-cell spacing could cause bending of the center support post, which amplifies nonuniformities in collapse voltage to 18.4% between neighboring cells. Using a 2-D finite element model (FEM), we found that for our designs, increasing the support post width to 1.67 times the membrane thickness alleviated the post bending problem. Using impedance and interferometer measurements to observe the effects of aspect ratio on higher order modes, we found that the (1,3) modal frequency approached the (1,1) modal frequency as the aspect ratio of the rectangles increased. In air operation, under continuous wave (CW) excitation at the center frequency, the rectangular cells behaved in the (1,1) mode. In immersion, because of dispersive guided modes, these cells operated in a higher order mode when excited with a CW signal at the center frequency. This contributed to a loss of output pressure; for this reason our rectangular design was unsuitable for CW operation in immersion.
