Reactivity and Structure of a Bis-phenolate Niobium NHC Complex

We report the facile synthesis of a rare niobium(V) imido NHC complex with a dianionic OCO-pincer benzimidazolylidene ligand (L ¹ ) with the general formula [NbL ¹ (N ^t Bu)PyCl] 1-Py. We achieved this by in situ deprotonation of the corresponding azolium salt [H ₃ L ¹ ][Cl] and subsequent reaction with [Nb(N ^t Bu)Py ₂ Cl ₃ ]. The pyridine ligand in 1-Py can be removed by the addition of B(C₆F₅)₃ as a strong Lewis acid leading to the formation of the pyridine-free complex 1. In contrast to similar vanadium(V) complexes, complex 1-Py was found to be a good precursor for various salt metathesis reactions, yielding a series of chalcogenido and pnictogenido complexes with the general formula [ NbL ¹ (N ^t Bu)Py(EMes)] (E = O (2), S (3), NH (4), and PH (5)). Furthermore, complex 1-Py can be converted to alkyl complex (6) with 1 equiv of neosilyl lithium as a transmetallation agent. Addition of a second equivalent yields a new trianionic supporting ligand on the niobium center (7) in which the benzimidazolylidene ligand is alkylated at the former carbene carbon atom. The latter is an interesting chemically "noninnocent" feature of the benzimidazolylidene ligand potentially useful in catalysis and atom transfer reactions. Addition of mesityl lithium to 1-Py gives the pyridine-free aryl complex 8, which is stable toward "overarylation" by an additional equivalent of mesityl lithium. Electrochemical investigation revealed that complexes 1-Py and 1 are inert toward reduction in dichloromethane but show two irreversible reduction processes in tetrahydrofuran as a solvent. However, using standard reduction agents, e.g., KC₈, K-mirror, and Na/Napht, no reduced products could be isolated. All complexes have been thoroughly studied by various techniques, including ¹H-, ¹³C{¹H}-, and ¹H-¹⁵N HMBC NMR spectroscopy, IR spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction analysis.

NHC-Stabilized Au10 Nanoclusters and Their Conversion to Au25 Nanoclusters

Herein, we describe the synthesis of a toroidal Au₁₀ cluster stabilized by N-heterocyclic carbene and halide ligands via reduction of the corresponding NHC-Au-X complexes (X = Cl, Br, I). The significant effect of the halide ligands on the formation, stability, and further conversions of these clusters is presented. While solutions of the chloride derivatives of Au₁₀ show no change even upon heating, the bromide derivative readily undergoes conversion to form a biicosahedral Au₂₅ cluster at room temperature. For the iodide derivative, the formation of a significant amount of Au₂₅ was observed even upon the reduction of NHC-Au-I. The isolated bromide derivative of the Au₂₅ cluster displays a relatively high (ca. 15%) photoluminescence quantum yield, attributed to the high rigidity of the cluster, which is enforced by multiple CH-π interactions within the molecular structure. Density functional theory computations are used to characterize the electronic structure and optical absorption of the Au₁₀ cluster. ¹³C-Labeling is employed to assist with characterization of the products and to observe their conversions by NMR spectroscopy.

A continuum of progress: applications of N-hetereocyclic carbene catalysis in total synthesis

N-Heterocyclic carbene (NHC) catalyzed transformations have emerged as powerful tactics for the construction of complex molecules. Since Stetter's report in 1975 of the total synthesis of cis-jasmon and dihydrojasmon by using carbene catalysis, the use of NHCs in total synthesis has grown rapidly, particularly over the last decade. This renaissance is undoubtedly due to the recent developments in NHC-catalyzed reactions, including new benzoin, Stetter, homoenolate, and aroylation processes. These transformations employ typical as well as Umpolung types of bond disconnections and have served as the key step in several new total syntheses. This Minireview highlights these reports and captures the excitement and emerging synthetic utility of carbene catalysis in total synthesis.

α,β-Unsaturated acyl azoliums from N-heterocyclic carbene catalyzed reactions: observation and mechanistic investigation

Catalytically generated acyl azoliums I and their α,β-unsaturated counterparts II are thought to be key reactive intermediates in a rapidly growing number of transformations promoted by N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) catalysts.[1 ] Acyl azoliums are invoked in the postulated catalytic cycles of nearly all of the new NHC-catalyzed reactions of α-functionalized aldehydes reported since 2004, in which they are generally assumed to possess the reactivity of an activated carboxylic acid, that is, analogous to an activated ester.[2 ] In NHC-catalyzed processes, they are most often obtained through internal redox reactions of functionalized aldehydes but have also been prepared by oxidations of the Breslow intermediates[3 ] or additions to ketenes.[4 ] Acyl azoliums I are important intermediates in thiamine pyrophosphate (ThPP) dependent enzymatic reactions.[5 ] Townsend et al. have recently proposed that unsaturated acyl azolium III is the key intermediate in clavulanic acid biosynthesis;[6 ] despite careful efforts, III or its analogues II have never been characterized or independently synthesized. Here, we document the observation and characterization of α,β-unsaturated acyl azoliums 1 and 2 (Scheme 1 ) and demonstrate that their corresponding hemiacetals (1 ′ and 2 ”) are the kinetically important intermediates in both their acylation and annulation reactions.

Late-stage diversification of chiral N-heterocyclic-carbene precatalysts for enantioselective homoenolate additions

A library of chiral triazolium salts has been prepared by late-state diversification of a triazolium amine salt. By utilizing a primary amine as a functional handle, a single triazolium salt can be transformed into a variety of chiral N-heterocyclic carbene precatalysts. This approach makes the preparation of chiral N-heterocyclic carbenes possible by a single-step modification of a triazolium salt, rather than the usual need for multistep organic synthesis and challenging heterocycle formation for each member of a catalyst library. We have screened these catalysts for control of diastereo- and enantioselectivity in a γ-lactam-forming reaction between α,β-unsaturated aldehydes and cyclic ketimines.

Stable cyclic carbenes and related species beyond diaminocarbenes

The success of homogeneous catalysis can be attributed largely to the development of a diverse range of ligand frameworks that have been used to tune the behavior of various systems. Spectacular results in this area have been achieved using cyclic diaminocarbenes (NHCs) as a result of their strong σ-donor properties. Although it is possible to cursorily tune the structure of NHCs, any diversity is still far from matching their phosphorus-based counterparts, which is one of the great strengths of the latter. A variety of stable acyclic carbenes are known, but they are either reluctant to bind metals or they give rise to fragile metal complexes. During the last five years, new types of stable cyclic carbenes, as well as related carbon-based ligands (which are not NHCs), and which feature even stronger σ-donor properties have been developed. Their synthesis and characterization as well as the stability, electronic properties, coordination behavior, and catalytic activity of the ensuing complexes are discussed, and comparisons with their NHC cousins are made.

Synthesis of a Benzodiazepine-derived Rhodium NHC Complex by C-H Bond Activation

The synthesis and characterization of a Rh(I)-NHC complex generated by C-H activation of 1,4-benzodiazepine heterocycle are reported. This complex constitutes a rare example of a carbene tautomer of a 1,4-benzodiazepine aldimine stabilized by transition metal coordination and demonstrates the ability of the catalytically relevant RhCl(PCy(3))(2) fragment to induce NHC-forming tautomerization of heterocycles possessing a single carbene-stabilizing heteroatom. Implications for the synthesis of benzodiazepines and related pharmacophores via C-H functionalization are discussed.
