Abstract
TMEM120A, also named as TACAN, is a novel membrane protein highly conserved in vertebrates and was recently proposed to be a mechanosensitive channel involved in sensing mechanical pain. Here we present the single-particle cryogenic electron microscopy (cryo-EM) structure of human TMEM120A, which forms a tightly packed dimer with extensive interactions mediated by the N-terminal coiled coil domain (CCD), the C-terminal transmembrane domain (TMD), and the re-entrant loop between the two domains. The TMD of each TMEM120A subunit contains six transmembrane helices (TMs) and has no clear structural feature of a channel protein. Instead, the six TMs form an α-barrel with a deep pocket where a coenzyme A (CoA) molecule is bound. Intriguingly, some structural features of TMEM120A resemble those of elongase for very long-chain fatty acids (ELOVL) despite the low sequence homology between them, pointing to the possibility that TMEM120A may function as an enzyme for fatty acid metabolism, rather than a mechanosensitive channel.

Abstract
The textural properties of butter are influenced by its fat content and implicitly by the fatty acids composition. The impact of butter’s chemical composition variation was studied in accordance with texture and color properties. From 37 fatty acids examined, only 18 were quantified in the analyzed butter fat samples, and approximately 69.120% were saturated, 25.482% were monounsaturated, and 5.301% were polyunsaturated. The butter samples’ viscosity ranged between 0.24 and 2.12 N, while the adhesiveness ranged between 0.286 to 18.19 N·mm. The principal component analysis (PCA) separated the butter samples based on texture parameters, fatty acids concentration, and fat content, which were in contrast with water content. Of the measured color parameters, the yellowness b* color parameter is a relevant indicator that differentiated the analyzed sample into seven statistical groups; the ANOVA statistics highlighted this difference at a level of p < 0.001.

Abstract
In Zellweger syndrome (ZS), lack of peroxisome function causes physiological and developmental abnormalities in many organs such as the brain, liver, muscles, and kidneys, but little is known about the exact pathogenic mechanism. By disrupting the zebrafish pex2 gene, we established a disease model for ZS and found that it exhibits pathological features and metabolic changes similar to those observed in human patients. By comprehensive analysis of the fatty acid profile, we found organ-specific accumulation and reduction of distinct fatty acid species, such as an accumulation of ultra-very-long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (ultra-VLC-PUFAs) in the brains of pex2 mutant fish. Transcriptome analysis using microarray also revealed mutant-specific gene expression changes that might lead to the symptoms, including reduction of crystallin, troponin, parvalbumin, and fatty acid metabolic genes. Our data indicated that the loss of peroxisomes results in widespread metabolic and gene expression changes beyond the causative peroxisomal function. These results suggest the genetic and metabolic basis of the pathology of this devastating human disease.

Abstract
Lipidomics suffers from the lack of fast and reproducible tools to obtain both structural information on intact phospholipids (PL) and fatty acyl chain composition. Hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography with electrospray ionization coupled to an orbital-trap Fourier-transform analyzer operating using all ion fragmentation mode (HILIC-ESI-FTMS-AIF MS) is seemingly a valuable resource in this respect. Here, accurate m/z values, HILIC retention times and AIF MS scan data were combined for PL assignment in standard mixtures or real lipid extracts. AIF scans in both positive and negative ESI mode, achieved using collisional induced dissociation for fragmentation, were applied to identify both the head-group of each PL class and the fatty acyl chains, respectively. An advantage of the AIF approach was the concurrent collection of tandem MS-like data, enabling the identification of linked fatty acyl chains of precursor phospholipids through the corresponding carboxylate anions. To illustrate the ability of AIF in the field of lipidomics, two different types of real samples, i.e., the lipid extracts obtained from human plasma and dermal fibroblasts, were examined. Using AIF scans, a total of 253 intact lipid species and 18 fatty acids across 4 lipid classes were recognized in plasma samples, while FA C20:3 was confirmed as the fatty acyl chain belonging to phosphatidylinositol, PI 38:3, which was found to be down-regulated in fibroblast samples of Parkinson's disease patients.

Abstract
Asian seabass is an important food fish species. While improving growth, increasing the nutritional value is important, omega-3 fatty acids are indispensable to human health. Identifying and validating DNA markers associated with traits is the first step towards marker-assisted selection (MAS). We quantified 13 different fatty acids and three growth traits in 213 F2 Asian seabass from a family at the age 270 days post hatch, and screened QTL for these traits. The content of total fatty acids in 100 g flesh was 2.57 ± 0.80 g, while the proportions of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) were 16.96 ± 2.20% and 5.42 ± 0.90%, respectively. A linkage map with 2424 SNPs was constructed and used for QTL mapping. For fatty acid compositions, 14 significant QTL were identified on three linkage groups (LG5, LG11 and LG14), with phenotypic variance explained (PVE) from 12.8 to 24.6%. Thirty-nine suggestive QTL were detected on 16 LGs. Two significant QTL for EPA were identified on LG5 and LG14, with PVE of 15.2% and 15.1%, respectively. No significant QTL was identified for DHA. For growth traits, six significant and 13 suggestive QTL were identified on two and seven LGs, respectively. Only a few significant QTL for fatty acids overlapped with previously mapped QTL for these traits, suggesting that most QTL detected in a family are family-specific and could only be used in MAS in the family per se. To facilitate population-wide molecular breeding, more powerful methods (e.g. GWAS) should be used to identify SNPs for genomic selection.

Abstract
Around a quarter of the global adult population have metabolic syndrome (MetS) and therefore increased risk of cardiovascular mortality and diabetes. Docosahexaenoic acid, oat beta-glucan and grape anthocyanins have been shown to be effective in reducing MetS risk factors when administered as isolated compounds, but their effect when administered as bioactive-enriched foods has not been evaluated. OBJECTIVE The overall aim of the PATHWAY-27 project was to evaluate the effectiveness of bioactive-enriched food consumption on improving risk factors of MetS. A pilot study was conducted to assess which of five bioactive combinations provided within three different food matrices (bakery, dairy or egg) were the most effective in adult volunteers. The trial also evaluated the feasibility of production, consumer acceptability and gastrointestinal tolerance of the bioactive-enriched food. METHOD The study included three monocentric, parallel-arm, double-blind, randomised, dietary intervention trials without a placebo. Each recruiting centre tested the five bioactive combinations within a single food matrix. RESULTS The study was completed by 167 participants (74 male, 93 female). The results indicated that specific bioactive/matrix combinations have effects on serum triglyceride or HDL-cholesterol level without adverse effects. CONCLUSION The study evidenced that bioactive-enriched food offers a promising food-based strategy for MetS prevention, and highlighted the importance of conducting pilot studies.

Abstract
In the present two-year study, an attempt was made to estimate the grain yield, grain nutrient uptake, and oil quality of three commonly grown maize (Zea mays L.) hybrids fertilized with varied levels of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K). Results obtained from both the experimental years indicated that application of 125% of recommended dose of fertilizer (RDF) recorded maximum grain yield (10.37 t ha-1; 124% higher than control). When compared with 100% RDF, grain yield reduction with nutrient omission was 44% for N omission, 17% for P omission, and 27% for K omission. Nitrogen uptake was increased with increasing NPK levels up to 150% RDF that was statistically at par (p ≥ 0.01) with 125% RDF. Increasing trend in P and K uptake was observed with successive increase in NPK levels up to 125% RDF, above which it declined. The protein content was significantly higher in grains of var. P 3396 with 125% RDF. Nutrient management has significant (p ≤ 0.01) role in the grain oil content. Saturated fatty acids (palmitic, stearic and arachidic acid) content decreased, and unsaturated fatty acid (oleic, linoleic and linolenic acid) increased with increasing NPK levels. The average oleic acid desaturation and linoleic acid desaturation ratios were increased with increasing NPK levels up to 100 and 125% RDF, respectively. However, average monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA): poly-unsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), saturated: unsaturated as well as linoleic: linolenic acid ratios were increased on receiving 75% RDF, and beyond that it showed decreasing trend. The omission of K had the highest inhibitory effect on corn oil quality followed by N and P omission.

Abstract
The effect of saturated fatty acids (SFAs) on incident type 2 diabetes (T2D) is controversial and few have systematically appraised the evidence. We conducted a comprehensive search of prospective studies examining these relationships that were published in PubMed, Web of Science, or EMBASE from 21 February 1989 to 21 February 2019. A total of 19 studies were included for systematic review and 10 for meta-analysis. We estimated the summarized relative risk (RR) and 95% confidence interval (95% CI) using a random (if I2 > 50%) or a fixed effects model (if I2 ≤ 50%). Although the included studies reported inconclusive results, the majority supported a protective effect of odd-chain and an adverse impact of even-chain SFAs. Meta-analysis showed that the per standard deviation (SD) increase in odd-chain SFAs was associated with a reduced risk of incident T2D (C15:0: 0.86, 0.76–0.98; C17:0: 0.76, 0.59–0.97), while a per SD increase in one even-chain SFA was associated with an increased risk of incident T2D (C14:0: 1.13, 1.09–1.18). No associations were found between other SFAs and incident T2D. In conclusion, our findings suggest an overall protective effect of odd-chain SFAs and the inconclusive impact of even- and very-long-chain SFAs on incident T2D.

Abstract
Soybeans are low in saturated fat and a rich source of protein, dietary fiber, and isoflavone; however, their nutritional shelf life is yet to be established. This study evaluated the change in the stability and quality of fatty acids in raw and roasted soybean flour under different storage temperatures and durations. In both types of soybean flour, the fatty-acid content was the highest in the order of linoleic acid (18-carbon chain with two double bonds; C18:2), oleic acid (C18:1), palmitic acid (C16:0), linolenic acid (18:3), and stearic acid (C18:0), which represented 47%, 26%, 12%, 9%, and 4% of the total fatty-acid content, respectively. The major unsaturated fatty acids of raw soybean flour-oleic acid, linoleic acid, and linolenic acid-decreased by 30.0%, 94.4%, and 97.7%, and 38.0%, 94.8%, and 98.0% when stored in polyethylene and polypropylene film, respectively, after 48 weeks of storage under high-temperature conditions. These values were later increased due to hydrolysis. This study presents the changes in composition and content of two soybean flour types and the changes in quality and stability of fatty acids in response to storage temperature and duration. This study shows the influence of storage conditions and temperature on the nutritional quality which is least affected by packing material.

Abstract
We evaluated the impacts of maternal consumption of different types of fatty acids during pregnancy and lactation on the lipid and glucose metabolism of 21-day-old offspring. Rats received either control (C), saturated (SFAs), trans (TFAs) or n - 3 polyunsaturated (PUFAs) normolipidic diets throughout pregnancy and lactation. 21-day old male pups constituted the groups: C21, S21, T21 and PUFA21. At 21st day, serum parameters, hepatic triacylglycerol (TAG) deposition, oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) and liver protein expressions were investigated. We found a decrease in serum concentrations of TAG, total cholesterol and FFA as well as in hepatic TAG content and baseline glycaemia, accompanied by an increase in catalase expression in PUFA21 group. In T21 group, OGTT showed slight disturbance in glucose homeostasis. Summarily, while early exposure to TFAs-based diets seems to harm pups' glucose homeostasis, maternal consumption of n - 3 PUFAs can improve lipid metabolism, TAG hepatic accumulation and catalase protein expression in 21-day-old offspring.

Abstract
We studied the influence of hypoxic-hypercapnic environment under the effect of hypothermia (artificial hibernation) on fatty acids spectrum of inner mitochondrial membrane (IMM) lipids of rat cardiomyocytes and hepatocytes. Specific for cellular organelles redistribution of IMM fatty acids was determined. It led to the reduction of total amount of saturated fatty acids (SFAs) and increase of unsaturated fatty acids (UFAs) in cardiomyocytes and to the increase of SFAs and decrease of UFAs in hepatocytes. The decrease in the content of oleic acid and increased content of arachidonic and docosahexaenoic acids in IMM were shown. This may be due to their role in the regulatory systems during hibernation, as well as following exit therefrom. It is assumed that artificial hibernation state is characterized by the stress reaction leading to optimal readjustment of fatty acids composition of membrane lipids, which supports functional activity of mitochondria in hepatocytes and cardiomyocytes.

Abstract
The polyphasic taxonomic analysis of the strain-antagonist of phytopathogenic bacteria and micromycetes was carried. It was found that the combination of culture-morphological, physiological and biochemical properties allowed to attribute the strain to the group Bacillus subtilis. It was shown that fatty acids of the cell walls of the strain were represented mainly by branched derivatives of iso- and anti iso- C15:0 and C17:0 fatty acids (85%) which was typical for the Bacillus amyloliquefaciens species. After molecular genetic analysis of the nucleotide sequence of the 16S rRNA gene and studying the profile of polymorphic nucleotides the strain was attributed to subspecies Bacillus amyloliquefaciens subsp. plantarum.

Abstract
Most common plant oils have little α-linolenic acid (C18:3(Δ9,12,15), ALA) and an unhealthy ω6/ω3 ratio. Here, fatty acids (FAs) in the seeds of 11 species of Paeonia L., including 10 tree peony and one herbaceous species, were explored using gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer. Results indicated that all Paeonia had a ω6/ω3 ratio less than 1.0, and high amounts of ALA (26.7-50%), oleic acid (C18:1(Δ9), OA) (20.8-46%) and linoleic acid (C18:2(Δ9,12), LA) (10-38%). ALA was a dominant component in oils of seven subsection Vaginatae species, whereas OA was predominant in two subsection Delavayanae species. LA was a subdominant oil component in P. ostii and P. obovata. Moreover, the FA composition and distribution of embryo (22 FAs), endosperm (14 FAs) and seed coat (6 FAs) in P. ostii, P. rockii and P. ludlowii were first reported. Peony species, particularly P. decomposita and P. rockii, can be excellent plant resources for edible oil because they provide abundant ALA to balance the ω6/ω3 ratio. The differences in the ALA, LA and OA content proportion also make the peony species a good system for detailed investigation of FA biosynthesis pathway and ALA accumulation.

Abstract
Investigation was conducted with objective to establish a prognostic significance of the fatty acids content in biliary lipids for the complications occurrence in patients, operated on for an acute cholecystitis, while presence of high operative—anesthesiological risk. A fatty acids content in biliary lipids was analyzed in 64 patients in presence of moderate (grade ІІ) and severe (grade ІІІ) course of the disease. Coefficients К1 and К2 for prognostication of postoperative purulent—inflammatory complications occurrence were elaborated, their threshold level (К1=0.59, К2=1.8) was established. There was established, that excess of the threshold meaning of К1 and К2 in a bile of patients, suffering an acute cholecystitis while presence of high operative—anesthesiological risk, constitutes a prognostic criterion for the postoperative purulent—inflammatory complications occurrence

This study aims to assess the microbiological parameters and the chemical composition of 21 samples of stingless bee pollen (Melipona mandacaia) from two regions of Bahia, Brazil (João Dourado and Uibaí), with particular emphasis on the nutritional value, total phenols and flavonoids and fatty acids composition. Regarding the microbiological quality, the studied microorganisms (moulds and yeasts, coliforms, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella sp., psychrotrophic and sulfite-reducing Clostridia) were absent in all samples. On the other hand, the values obtained for the aerobic mesophilic microorganism ranged from 11.0 ± 1.0 to 1.32 ± 1.2 cfu∙g-1 (JD samples) and from 282 ± 3.82 to 688 ± 10.1 cfu∙g-1 (U samples). The nutritional parameters (moisture, ash, water activity, pH, total acidity, protein, fiber, total phenolic, flavonoids and reducing sugars) were within the stipulated by law, except for pH and moisture content, which presented superior and inferior values, respectively. Polyunsaturated fatty acids (54.1%) were significantly higher than saturated (42.18%) and monounsaturated (3.71%). It was found that the bee pollen is safe from the microbiological point of view and has a good nutritional quality. The influence of the geographical origin on the assessed parameters was evident, especially concerning the fatty acid profile.

Abstract
Mutations in the ABC transporter ABCC6 were recently identified as cause of Pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE), a rare genetic disorder characterized by progressive mineralization of elastic fibers. We used an untargeted metabolic approach to identify biochemical differences between human dermal fibroblasts from healthy controls and PXE patients in an attempt to find a link between ABCC6 deficiency, cellular metabolic alterations and disease pathogenesis. 358 compounds were identified by mass spectrometry covering lipids, amino acids, peptides, carbohydrates, nucleotides, vitamins and cofactors, xenobiotics and energy metabolites. We found substantial differences in glycerophospholipid composition, leucine dipeptides, and polypeptides as well as alterations in pantothenate and guanine metabolism to be significantly associated with PXE pathogenesis. These findings can be linked to extracellular matrix remodeling and increased oxidative stress, which reflect characteristic hallmarks of PXE. Our study could facilitate a better understanding of biochemical pathways involved in soft tissue mineralization.

Abstract
The aim of the study was to identify qualitatively and quantitatively fatty acid composition of large pumpkin seed oil cultivated in Georgia (Cucurbitae maxima Duch) and evaluate its biological activities. Evaluation was conducted using high-performance liquid chromatography method. Fatty acids ranging from C12:0 to C22:0 were identified in the probe. The oil contained 0,2В±0,01mg% lauric, 0,3В±0,01 mg% miristic, 9,0В±0,7mg% palmitic, 5,5В±0,4 mg% stearic, 28,1В±1,0 mg% oleic, 40,2В±1,9 mg% linolic, 12,1В±1,0 mg% linolenic, 2,0В±0,2mg% arachinic and 1,2В±0,1 mg% begenic acids. The investigation showed that large pumpkin seed oil contains a range of biologically significant fatty acids, unique proportion of which attaches great value to the vegetative material.

Abstract
The laboratory strains of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii have been reported to contain no phosphatidylcholine (PC), which is considered to be replaced by another zwitterionic lipid, diacylglyceryl-N,N,N-trimethylhomoserine (DGTS). According to the recently published classification, the strains belonged to the subgroup Reinhardtinia. Screening for PC in 13 selected strains of Chlamydomonas in the NIES Algal Collection, which are different in habitats and belong to different phylogenetic subgroups in the genus, revealed the presence of PC in four strains: a strain in the subgroup Polytominia, and three strains in Reinhardtinia. PC was not detected in three other strains of Reinhardtinia analyzed. The presence/absence of PC was not related to the phylogenetic relationship based on 18S rRNA. DGTS was detected in all the strains analyzed. The rare isomer of linolenic acid, 18:3(5,9,12), which has been found in the DGTS of C. reinhardtii, was found in the PC of the two strains and in the DGTS of the five strains. The occurrence of this fatty acid seems limited to a branch of Reinhardtinia. Acquisition and loss of PC in various strains of Chlamydomonas are discussed from the viewpoint of evolution of PC biosynthetic pathway.

Abstract
The seasonal chemical composition of essential oils from Inga laurina was determined by GC/MS. In the stem bark’s essential oil extracted during the dry season, the presence of terpenoids (30.05%) stood out, and phytol (9.76%) was the major compound identified. For the stem bark oil obtained during the rainy season, in addition to terpenoids (26.63%), a large amount of fatty acids (46.84%) were identified, in particular palmitic acid (25.40%). Regarding the leaves’ essential oil obtained in the dry season, esters (42.35%) were the main components. The main ester present was (Z)-hex-3-enyl benzoate (10.15%) and the major compound of this oil was (Z)-hex-3-en-1-ol (14.23%). Terpenoids (33.84%), long-chain alkanes (27.04%) and fatty acids (21.72%) were the main components of the essential oil from leaves in the rainy season. Phytol (33.21%), nonacosane (21.95%) and palmitic acid (15.20%) were the major compounds identified. The antimicrobial activity against aerobic and anaerobic oral bacteria was evaluated by the microdilution broth method and cytotoxic activity was carried out with Vero cells. The essential oils from the rainy season showed a better inhibition of the bacterial growth with Minimal Inhibitory Concentrations (MIC) values of 25 or 50 µg·mL−1 for aerobic bacteria, and high selectivity against bacteria was observed. The large amount of fatty acids in rainy season oils may be related to the better inhibitory effects observed.

Abstract
Using high-performance liquid chromatography methods are qualitatively and quantitatively identified most biological important high fatty acids, contained in Ruta graveolens seed oil grown on the experimental plot of Kutateladze Institute of Pharmakochemistry (Georgia) and compare its biological activity. Their relative concentration is expressed as percentages of the total fatty acid component. The sample contained the range of fatty acids from С12:0 to С22:0. The investigation showed different sensitivity of components. In order of elution the list of compound are reported. The oil contained 2,08±0,1 mg% lauric, 2,18±0,1 mg% miristic, 3,98±0,1 mg% palmitic, 30,90±1,2 mg% stearic, 41,92±1,8 mg% oleic, 10,14±0,4 mg% linolic, 6,50±0,3 mg% linolenic, 2,00±0,1 mg% arachinic and 2,10±0,1 mg% begenic acid. The chromatography signals with retention values 7,96 and 14,08 minuts are qualitatively not identified.

Abstract
Emerging aquatic insects, including mosquitoes, are known to transfer to terrestrial ecosystems specific essential biochemicals, such as polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA). We studied fatty acid (FA) composition and contents of dominant mosquito populations (Diptera: Culicidae), that is, Anopheles messeae, Ochlerotatus caspius, Oc. flavescens, Oc. euedes, Oc. subdiversus, Oc. cataphylla, and Aedes cinereus, inhabited a steppe wetland of a temperate climate zone to fill up the gap in their lipid knowledge. The polar lipid and triacylglycerol fractions of larvae and adults were compared. In most studied mosquito species, we first found and identified a number of short-chain PUFA, for example, prominent 14:2n-6 and 14:3n-3, which were not earlier documented in living organisms. These PUFA, although occurred in low levels in adult mosquitoes, can be potentially used as markers of mosquito biomass in terrestrial food webs. We hypothesize that these acids might be synthesized (or retroconverted) by the mosquitoes. Using FA trophic markers accumulated in triacylglycerols, trophic relations of the mosquitoes were accessed. The larval diet comprised green algae, cryptophytes, and dinoflagellates and provided the mosquitoes with essential n-3 PUFA, linolenic, and eicosapentaenoic acids. As a result, both larvae and adults of the studied mosquitoes had comparatively high content of the essential PUFA. Comparison of FA proportions in polar lipids versus storage lipids shown that during mosquito metamorphosis transfer of essential eicosapentaenoic and arachidonic acids from the reserve in storage lipids of larvae to functional polar lipids in adults occurred.

Abstract
The lipophilic index (LI), a mean measure of fatty acid melting points, has been proposed to capture overall fatty acid profile and may play an important role in the etiology of coronary heart disease. We aimed to determine the association between LI in diet and in adipose tissue and metabolic risk factors for myocardial infarction (MI) and risk of MI. We used a population-based, matched case-control study of nonfatal first acute MI conducted in Costa Rica between 1994 and 2004, with 1,627 case-control pairs. The LI is defined as the mean of the melting points of specific fatty acids in diet or adipose tissue. LIs in diet and adipose tissue were significantly associated with higher plasma triglyceride concentrations, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol concentrations, and low-density:high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio. Comparing extreme quintiles for the LI in diet or adipose tissue, the odds ratios for MI were 1.57 (95% confidence interval: 1.22, 2.02; P for trend < 0.001) for dietary LI and 1.30 (95% confidence interval: 1.00, 1.69; P for trend = 0.02) for adipose tissue LI in the multivariable models. We hypothesize that a higher LI in diet and in adipose tissue represents decreased fatty acid fluidity and could play an important role in the etiology of coronary heart disease.

Using high-performance liquid chromatography methods (Cromatograph PTC-1, repractometer R-401, column Bondopaс C18) were quantitatively and qualitatively identified most biological important high fatty acids, contained in peach oil (Persica Vulgaris) from ost region of Georgia (Kacheti). Their relative concentrations are expressed as percentages of the total fatty acids components. The chromatography investigation shaved, that the oil contained 12,98±1,0mg% linoleic, 9,97±0,3 mg% palmitic, 4,82±0,2 mg% linolenic, 3,58±0,1 mg% begenic and 2,16±0,1 mg% arachinic acids. The predominant fatty acids of peach oil were linoleic, palmitic and oleinic acids. The investigation showed different sensitivity of components contained in peach oil.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To research the effect on fatty acid and oxidation products of corn oil under different temperature and time. METHODS Corn oil was heated in 140 degrees C, 200 degrees C, 240 degrees C, after 60 s-300 s, then detected the fatty acid, POV and AV. RESULTS Corn oil was heated in 240 degrees C, after 138 s, the corn oil started to fire, the contains of SFA rised from 14.18 g/100 g to 20.29 g/100 g, the contains of MUFA rised from 28. 30 g/100 g to 33. 33 g/100 g, the contains of PUFA reduced from 53. 13 g/100 g to 28.98 g/100 g, and tFA, POV, AV, TOV arrived to the highest value, they were 11.29 g/100 g, 108.9, 17.12 mmol/kg, 177.37 mmol/kg respectively. CONCLUSION As the cooking time and the cooking temperature increased, the MUFA, tFA and the TV of the corn oil increased, on the contrary the PUFA reduced.

Abstract
Micrococcus luteus is a Gram-positive bacterium that produces iso- and anteiso-branched alkenes by the head-to-head condensation of fatty-acid thioesters [coenzyme A (CoA) or acyl carrier protein (ACP)]; this activity is of interest for the production of advanced biofuels. In an effort to better understand the control of the formation of branched fatty acids in M. luteus, the structure of FabH (MlFabH) was determined. FabH, or β-ketoacyl-ACP synthase III, catalyzes the initial step of fatty-acid biosynthesis: the condensation of malonyl-ACP with an acyl-CoA. Analysis of the MlFabH structure provides insights into its substrate selectivity with regard to length and branching of the acyl-CoA. The most structurally divergent region of FabH is the L9 loop region located at the dimer interface, which is involved in the formation of the acyl-binding channel and thus limits the substrate-channel size. The residue Phe336, which is positioned near the catalytic triad, appears to play a major role in branched-substrate selectivity. In addition to structural studies of MlFabH, transcriptional studies of M. luteus were also performed, focusing on the increase in the ratio of anteiso:iso-branched alkenes that was observed during the transition from early to late stationary phase. Gene-expression microarray analysis identified two genes involved in leucine and isoleucine metabolism that may explain this transition.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Asthma is a respiratory tract disorder characterized by airway hyper-reactivity and chronic inflammation. Allergic asthma is associated with the production of allergen-specific IgE and expansion of allergen-specific T-cell populations. Progression of allergic inflammation is driven by T-helper type 2 (Th2) mediators and is associated with alterations in the levels of lipid mediators. OBJECTIVES Responses of the respiratory system to birch allergen provocation in allergic asthmatics were investigated. Eicosanoids and other oxylipins were quantified in the bronchoalveolar lumen to provide a measure of shifts in lipid mediators associated with allergen challenge in allergic asthmatics. METHODS Eighty-seven lipid mediators representing the cyclooxygenase (COX), lipoxygenase (LOX) and cytochrome P450 (CYP) metabolic pathways were screened via LC-MS/MS following off-line extraction of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF). Multivariate statistics using OPLS were employed to interrogate acquired oxylipin data in combination with immunological markers. RESULTS Thirty-two oxylipins were quantified, with baseline asthmatics possessing a different oxylipin profile relative to healthy individuals that became more distinct following allergen provocation. The most prominent differences included 15-LOX-derived ω-3 and ω-6 oxylipins. Shared-and-Unique-Structures (SUS)-plot modeling showed a correlation (R(2) = 0.7) between OPLS models for baseline asthmatics (R(2)Y[cum] = 0.87, Q(2)[cum] = 0.51) and allergen-provoked asthmatics (R(2)Y[cum] = 0.95, Q(2)[cum] = 0.73), with the majority of quantified lipid mediators and cytokines contributing equally to both groups. Unique structures for allergen provocation included leukotrienes (LTB(4) and 6-trans-LTB(4)), CYP-derivatives of linoleic acid (epoxides/diols), and IL-10. CONCLUSIONS Differences in asthmatic relative to healthy profiles suggest a role for 15-LOX products of both ω-6 and ω-3 origin in allergic inflammation. Prominent differences at baseline levels indicate that non-symptomatic asthmatics are subject to an underlying inflammatory condition not observed with other traditional mediators. Results suggest that oxylipin profiling may provide a sensitive means of characterizing low-level inflammation and that even individuals with mild disease display distinct phenotypic profiles, which may have clinical ramifications for disease.

Abstract
To determine the involvement of physiological doses of oestradiol on brain lipid composition, we have analysed the lipid class and fatty acid composition of phospholipids in the brain from pregnant and 17β-oestradiol-treated rats. Rats were randomly divided into three groups: ovariectomised control (OVX + VEH), ovariectomised oestradiol-treated (OVX + E(2) ) and pregnant (PREG) rats. Rats from the OVX + E(2) group were injected daily with different doses of 17β-oestradiol mimicking the plasma levels observed during pregnancy. Analyses of brain lipid class composition showed that physiological doses of oestradiol increased cholesterol levels of the OVX + E(2) group compared to the OVX + VEH group. It was also found that cholesterol levels in the PREG group were significantly lower than in the OVX + VEH and OVX + E(2) groups, indicating the involvement of gestational hormones other than oestradiol in the regulation of brain cholesterol during pregnancy. Brains from pregnant rats also exhibited reduced levels of plasmalogens and saturated fatty acids compared to the ovariectomised groups, especially in the second half of pregnancy. Interestingly, analyses of fatty acid composition of phospholipids revealed that physiological doses of oestradiol increased brain docosahexaenoic acid (DHA; 22:6 n-3) levels. Moreover, DHA levels in pregnant rats were similar to those observed in the OVX + E(2) group at all stages, suggesting that oestradiol is the main hormone in the regulation of brain DHA levels during pregnancy. Liver appears to be the major source for n-3 and n-6 long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPUFAs) DHA and arachidonic acid, which are released and transported to the maternal brain and the developing foetus under the influence of oestrogens. We also observed that the largest depots of n-3 and n-6 LCPUFA precursors (linolenic acid and linoleic acid, respectively) occur in adipose tissue triglycerides, which, in turn are significantly increased during pregnancy. Our observations are in accordance with an oestradiol-induced increased bioavailability of brain DHA in pregnant rats. We hypothesise that the reduction of maternal brain DHA observed at the end of pregnancy is a result of the very high demand DHA of foetal brain, which overcomes the maximal maternal (and likely foetal) capacity for de novo DHA synthesis in the liver and brain.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To analyse the fatty acid composition of mature human milk in three different geographical positions of China. METHOD Chinese women were recruited from three regions during their pregnancy. The regions closed to freshwater river/lake (Jurong), coastal (Rizhao) and inland (Xushui). Mature milk samples were collected on the 28th day of lactation, 31 kinds of fatty acids were separated and quantified by gas-chromatographic method. RESULTS The median of total lipids in 100g of milk were 4.47g in 47 women from Jurong, 1.50g in 50 women from Rizhao and 3.91g in 46 women from Xushui. The median of total fatty acids were 3934, 1319 and 3437 mg/100g milk respectively. Total lipids and total fatty acids from Rizhao region milk samples were significantly lower than those from other two regions. The main fatty acids of SFA, MUFA, n-6PUFA and n-3PUFA in three regions were C16: 0, C18: 1 n-9 cis, C18: 2 n-6 cis and C18: 3 n-3 respectively. The median of the percentage of ARA in total fatty acid were 0.72%, 0.63% and 0.63%, respectively. The median of the percentage of DHA in total fatty acid were 0.41%, 0.47% and 0.24%, respectively. CONCLUSION; There is significant difference among fatty acid composition of mature human milk from women live in the three different geographical positions, which could be caused by different dietary habits amomg regions.

Abstract
Polyurethanes are among the most versatile polymers because of the wide range of monomers, particularly diols or polyols, that can be utilized in their synthesis. This Review focuses on the most recent advances made in the production of polyurethane materials from vegetable oils. Over the past several years, increasing attention has been given to the use of vegetable oils as feedstocks for polymeric materials, because they tend to be very inexpensive and available in large quantities. Using various procedures, a very broad range of polyols or diols and in some cases, poly- or diisocyanates, can be obtained from vegetable oils. The wide range of vegetable oil-based monomers leads to a wide variety of polyurethane materials, from flexible foams to ductile and rigid plastics. Abstract
BACKGROUND Fatty acids are essential components in cell membranes of bacteria, and they determine the different structures of lipids and lipid A. Therefore, fatty acids are good targets for development of rapid and reliable methods for differentiation of bacteria. RESULTS Here we report fatty acid distributions in three different bacteria-Escherichia coli, Francisella novicida and Bacillus subtilis-studied by using gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Different fatty acid profiles were observed in the three bacteria. Hydroxyl fatty acids were observed in E. coli and F. novicida, but not in B. subtilis. Carbocyclic fatty acids were observed in E. coli but not in F. novicida or B. subtilis. Methyl-branched fatty acids were observed in B. subtilis but not in E. coli or F. novicida. Although saturated and unsaturated fatty acids were all observed in the three bacteria, their chain lengths and distribution patterns were different. CONCLUSION The results indicate that the fatty acid profile in a given bacterium is highly specific, and gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry is a rapid and sensitive method for the identification or detection of bacteria.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine the association between breast cancer risk and the fatty acid composition of phospholipids in prediagnostic serum samples. METHODS We analyzed the fatty acid composition in 130 incident postmenopausal breast cancer cases and 257 matched controls nested within the beta-Carotene and Retinol Efficacy Trial Cohort. The fatty acid composition was measured by gas chromatography. Multivariate-adjusted odds ratios and corresponding 95% confidence intervals for the risk of breast cancer were estimated using logistic regression. Stratified analysis was conducted by smoking status. RESULTS There were no associations with breast cancer risk for total saturated, monounsaturated, n-3, n-6, or trans fatty acids among all women. For individual fatty acids, we observed an inverse association with the trans linoleic acid, 18:2n6tt (p(trend)=0.0002). Among current smokers, long-chain saturated fatty acids (22:0 and 24:0) and total 16:1 trans fatty acids were positively associated with the risk of breast cancer, whereas these fatty acids showed no association among former smokers. CONCLUSION Overall, we observed no significant association between serum phospholipid fatty acids and breast cancer risk, except for the trans linoleic acid isomer 18:2n6tt, which was unexpected. Our finding of a positive association of long-chain saturated fatty acids (22:0 and 24:0) and total 16:1 trans fatty acids with the risk of breast cancer only in current smokers may suggest an effect modification by smoking status. Our findings need to be replicated in future epidemiologic studies.

Abstract
The dietary fatty acids include saturated and unsaturated fatty acids of the n-9, n-6 and n-3 families. Their quantity and quality are reflected in the plasma lipoproteins. The platelet and endothelial cell lipid composition also is influenced by the dietary fatty acids. These changes have consequences for cellular lipid and prostanoid metabolism and other cellular functions which could be related to the thrombosis mechanism. A high intake of saturated and n-9 unsaturated fatty acids induces changes in plasma, platelets and endothelial cells favouring thrombosis and atherosclerosis. By contrast, both n-6 and n-3 fatty acids give rise to plasma lipoprotein and cellular lipid composition that counteract atherosclerosis and thrombosis. The ideal balance between the various dietary fatty acids is not known. Experimental and epidemiological studies support the recommendation of a low saturated fat intake with supplement of both n-6 and -3 polyunsaturated fatty acids.

Abstract
This review chronicles the synergistic growth of the fields of fatty acid and polyketide synthesis over the last century. In both animal fatty acid synthases and modular polyketide synthases, similar catalytic elements are covalently linked in the same order in megasynthases. Whereas in fatty acid synthases the basic elements of the design remain immutable, guaranteeing the faithful production of saturated fatty acids, in the modular polyketide synthases, the potential of the basic design has been exploited to the full for the elaboration of a wide range of secondary metabolites of extraordinary structural diversity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Inflammation has been established as a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. The relationships of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) and monounsaturated fatty acids to inflammation are still controversial in Western populations. The relationships are not clear in Japanese whose intake of seafood-based long-chain n-3 PUFAs is high. METHODS We conducted a cross-sectional epidemiologic study in the Japanese population (1,556 men and 1,461 women aged 35-60). Serum high sensitivity C-reactive protein (CRP) was measured, and intakes of 7 specific fatty acids (% of energy) were evaluated by a validated self-administered dietary history questionnaire. RESULTS CRP was significantly and inversely related to the intakes of oleic acid (p=0.008) and alpha-linolenic acid (p=0.026) in women after adjustment for confounding factors. A multiple regression analysis showed that, especially in the middle tertile of long-chain n-3 PUFAs (eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid) intake, CRP was inversely related to the intake of oleic acid and linoleic acid in both sexes and to the intake of alpha-linolenic acid in women. CONCLUSION Intakes of oleic acid, linoleic acid, and alpha-linolenic acid would reduce serum CRP, especially when the intake of long-chain n-3 PUFAs is at a moderate level in Japanese.

Abstract
The extraction method and the condition of supersonic extraction to papaw seed were studied. The result showed that supersonic extraction was a good method with less time and high extraction rate. And the orthogonal experiment proved that the best condition was that the papaw seed was extracted 3 time; the proportion of dissolvent and the seed was 1: 10, and the time for once was 20 min. The methyl esterification method and the condition of GC for the fatty acid of oil and its content: C15H31COOH (17.3%), C17 H35COOH (5.22%), C19H39COOH (1.12%), C17H33COOH (69.25%), C17H31COOH (4.31%), C18H35COOH (1.68%), C19H37 COOH (0.75%), C20H39COOH (0.33%). The content of unsatisfied fatty acid was 75.92%.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To analyse and compare the phospholipid and fatty acid composition of total lipids and the occurrence of lipid peroxidation and protein oxidation directly in erythrocytes or platelets from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma patients. PATIENTS Fifteen consecutive outpatients with COPD (all smokers) and asthma (non-smokers) recruited during a moderate-to-severe (COPD) or moderate (asthma) exacerbation. Fifteen subjects with smoking habits similar to those of COPD patients were studied as a control group. METHODS Phospholipid and total fatty acid compositions were analysed by two-dimensional thin layer chromatography or gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, respectively. The lipid fluorescence of lipid extracts was measured by spectrofluorimetry. Protein carbonyl contents and profiles were measured by immunoblot detection. RESULTS No differences were found either in erythrocyte or platelet cholesterol or phospholipid levels. Only a decrease in the content of phosphatidylserine + phosphatidylinositol (P<0.003) was detected in platelets from the asthma patients. In erythrocytes, the fatty acid profile changed in both lung pathologies, especially as regards polyunsaturated fatty acids (decreases in arachidonic and 22:4 fatty acid contents). Other observed changes were: COPD, an increase in palmitic fatty acid; asthma, an increase in oleic and decreases in eicosapentaenoic and 22:6 + 24:1 fatty acids. In platelets, the fatty acid profiles revealed many differences between both lung pathologies: COPD, a decrease in 18:1 and increases in 20:5 and 22:5 + 24:0; asthma, a decrease in 20:4 and increase in 22:6 + 24:1. In COPD vs. asthma patients, fatty acid changes were mainly detected in platelets, especially in 18-carbon species, with decreases in stearic and 18:1 fatty acids in the COPD patients. Protein oxidation levels were increased in both lung pathologies in both erythrocytes and platelets. CONCLUSIONS COPD and asthma are associated with common or specific changes in the lipid composition of erythrocytes and/or platelets. The data point to lipid peroxidation and protein oxidation phenomena in both types of blood cell, although platelets would be more susceptible to stress.

Abstract
OMIZ-W68, a chemically defined medium that contains no long-chain fatty acids and yet supports in vitro proliferation of a wide range of fastidious oral anaerobes, is described. The type strains of Treponema denticola, Treponema lecithinolyticum, Treponema maltophilum, Treponema pectinovorum, Treponema socranskii, and an as yet unpublished canine Treponema species could be propagated indefinitely in this medium with sugar supplements for the saccharolytic species. Analysis of the cellular fatty acids (CFA) of these treponemes by gas chromatography demonstrated the synthesis of C14, C15, C16, and C17 fatty acids (linear-, iso-, and anteiso-forms) in various proportions, but neither hydroxy- nor unsaturated fatty acids. However, between 0% and 40% of the eluted material could not be identified. The proportions of CFAs differed not only between species but also between the eight strains of Treponema denticola investigated. Replacing OMIZ-W68 by a derivative minimal essential medium (OMIZ-M/TDCDK) developed for Treponema denticola had little effect on the CFA profiles. In contrast, the CFA profiles of treponemes grown in OMIZ-W68 showed at best minor similarity to the strains from the Moore library of the Virginia Polytechnic Institute, which had been grown in media containing serum, peptones, and yeast extract.

Abstract
The combined effect of dietary carbohydrate type and n-3 PUFA (EPA+DHA) on pre- and post-challenge haemato-immunological responses in Labeo rohita juveniles was studied. Fish were fed for 67days with six different test diets containing either gelatinised (G) or non-gelatinised (NG) corn (43%) with three levels of n-3 PUFA (0.5%, 1.0% and 2.0%). During the pre-challenge period, significantly higher (P<0.05) NBT, serum lysozyme activity, total protein and globulin content was recorded in the NG carbohydrate fed groups. Highest NBT value was recorded in the groups fed with 1.0% n-3 PUFA, whereas the highest serum lysozyme activity (P<0.05) was recorded at either 0.5% or 2.0% n-3 PUFA fed groups in both the pre- and post-challenge period. Feeding of NG corn significantly increased the total leucocyte count, lysozyme activity, A/G ratio and decreased the total erythrocyte count, haemoglobin, serum total protein and globulin content of L. rohita juveniles during the post-challenge period. Similarly, feeding of n-3 PUFA at any level significantly increased the immunological parameters like lysozyme activity or A/G ratio, whereas total leukocyte count increased due to feeding of either 0.5% or 1.0% n-3 PUFA. The NBT and albumin values remained similar in both the pre- and post-challenge period. After challenge with Aeromonas hydrophila, the highest survival was recorded in the NG carbohydrate fed groups, whereas the lowest survival was recorded in the highest level of n-3 PUFA fed group irrespective of dietary carbohydrate type. Thus, a high level of G carbohydrate as well as n-3 PUFA is found to be immunosuppressive in L. rohita juveniles. NG carbohydrate supplemented with 1.0% n-3 PUFA is found to be optimum to enhance the immunity in L. rohita juveniles.

Abstract
Abnormalities in the fatty acid (FA)-based endocannabinoid lipid signaller anandamide, and prevalent cannabis use, have been found to be associated with schizophrenia and may potentially alter stress mechanisms. Other FA-based signallers, however, reportedly enhance anandamide function. The aim of the present study was to investigate the relationship between peripherally-measured levels of the FA sources of anandamide and its related signallers. The authors examined erythrocyte FA levels in patients who were former cannabis users ("C-ever") (n=6) or cannabis-naïve ("C-never") (n=6), in relation to symptoms of stress measured by the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI) and the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scales (DASS). The results showed that, in former cannabis users only, arachidonic acid (AA, anandamide's precursor) was positively correlated with total 16- and 18-carbon monounsaturated and saturated FAs (16,18m+sFAs), precursors of lipid signallers that enhance or interact with anandamide function. In C-ever, both AA and 16,18m+sFAs correlated inversely with stress, while the 18-carbon polyunsaturated FA, linoleic acid, was positively correlated with stress. Although the findings are tentative in this small sample, potential interventions are indicated. Future research may determine whether these FAs are involved in hypothesised links between anandamide abnormalities, cannabis use and stress in schizophrenia.

Abstract
Dehalococcoides species have a highly restricted lifestyle and are only known to derive energy from reductive dehalogenation reactions. The lipid fraction of two Dehalococcoides isolates, strains BAV1 and FL2, and a tetrachloroethene-to-ethene-dechlorinating Dehalococcoides-containing consortium were analyzed for neutral lipids and phospholipid fatty acids. Unusual phospholipid modifications, including the replacement of unsaturated fatty acids with furan fatty acids, were detected in both Dehalococcoides isolates and the mixed culture. The following three furan fatty acids are reported as present in bacterial phospholipids for the first time: 9-(5-pentyl-2-furyl)-nonanoate (Fu18:2omega6), 9-(5-butyl-2-furyl)-nonanoate (Fu17:2omega5), and 8-(5-pentyl-2-furyl)-octanoate (Fu17:2omega6). The neutral lipids of the Dehalococcoides cultures contained unusually large amounts of benzoquinones (i.e., ubiquinones [UQ]), which is unusual for anaerobes. In particular, the UQ-8 content of Dehalococcoides was 5- to 20-fold greater than that generated in aerobically grown Escherichia coli cultures relative to the phospholipid fatty acid content. Naphthoquinone isoprenologues (MK), which are often found in anaerobically grown bacteria and archaea, were also detected. Dehalococcoides shows a difference in isoprenologue pattern between UQ-8 and MK-5 that is atypical of other bacteria capable of producing both quinone types. The difference in UQ-8 and MK-5 isoprenologue patterns strongly suggests a special function for UQ in Dehalococcoides, and Dehalococcoides may utilize structural modifications in its lipid armamentarium to protect against free radicals that are generated in the process of reductive dechlorination.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to examine the influence of different fat diets on serotonin receptor and transporter binding. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed a diet of either high saturated fat, omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acid, omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid or low fat (control) for eight weeks. Using Beta-Imager quantification techniques, [(3)H]ketanserin, [(3)H]mesulergine and [(3)H]paroxetine binding to serotonin (5-HT)(2A), 5-HT(2C) receptors and 5-HT transporters (5-HTT) was measured throughout the brain in all four groups. All three high fatty acid diets influenced serotonin receptor binding, however the most pronounced effects were that compared with the low fat control group, i) 5-HT(2A) receptor binding was increased in the caudate putamen, but reduced in the mammillary nucleus in high saturated fat and high omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acid diet groups; ii) 5-HT(2C) receptor binding was reduced in the mamillary nucleus of saturated fat group and reduced in prefrontal cortex of the omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acid and omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid groups; and iii) 5-HTT binding was reduced in the hippocampus in the omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acid group. Overall, the omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acid diet exerted the most influence on serotonin receptor and transporter binding. These results may be of importance in relation to neuropsychiatric diseases such as schizophrenia, where associations between altered fatty acid levels and the serotonergic system have been made.

Abstract
This article reviews the effects of acute and chronic exercise on the fatty-acid composition of animal and human tissues (plasma, skeletal muscle, heart, adipose tissue, liver, artery and erythrocytes), as reported in 68 studies spanning four decades. The most consistently observed effect has been an increase in the relative amount of unsaturated, especially monounsaturated, non-esterified fatty acids in plasma of both animals and humans after acute exercise. Chronic exercise seems to increase the proportion of polyunsaturated fatty acids and omega6 fatty acids, while decreasing the proportion of monounsaturated fatty acids in animal and human adipose tissue. Additionally, chronic exercise seems to decrease the relative amount of unsaturated fatty acids in liver lipids of animals and humans. There is no consensus regarding the effect of exercise on the fatty-acid composition of lipids in any other tissue. In general, the effects of exercise are independent of nutrition and, regarding skeletal muscle, muscle fibre type. The available literature shows that, in addition to modifying the concentrations of animal and human tissue lipids, exercise also changes their fatty-acid profile. Unfortunately, the available studies are so much divided among exercise models, species and biological samples that a cohesive picture of the plasticity of the fatty-acid pattern of most tissues toward exercise has not emerged. Future studies should focus on determining the fatty-acid profile of separate lipid classes (rather than total lipids) in separate subcellular fractions (rather than whole tissues), examining tissues and organs on which no data are available and exploring the mechanisms of the exercise-induced changes in fatty-acid composition.

Immunofluorescence microscopy exposed the presence of novel 3-hydroxy oxylipins on the surfaces of aggregated hat-shaped ascospores of Ascoidea africana. These compounds were confirmed by gas chromatography – mass spectrometry analysis. Abstract
Alfalfa leafcutting bees, Megachile rotundata (F.), overwinter as prepupae. The internal lipids were extracted from prepupae that had been wintered at 4 degrees C for 7 months. Megachile rotundata prepupae possessed copious quantities of internal lipids (20% of the fresh weight) that were extracted with CHCl3/methanol (2:1). Transmission electron microscopy revealed that lipids were stored within very large intracellular vacuoles. Separation by silica chromatography revealed that 88% of the internal lipids were triacylglycerols. Ester derivatives of fatty acids from triacylglycerol components were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and 15 fatty acid constituents were identified. The majority (76%) of the triacylglycerol fatty acids were unsaturated fatty acids. The major triacylglycerol fatty acid constituent (30%) was the C16 monounsaturated fatty acid, palmitoleic acid (16:1, hexadec-9-enoic acid), with substantial amounts of linolenic acid (18:3, octadec-9,12,15-trienoic acid, 15%), palmitic acid (16:0, hexadecanoic acid, 14%) and oleic acid (18:1, octadec-9-enoic acid, 13%). Palmitoleic acid as the major fatty acid of an insect is an unusual occurrence as well as the presence of the 16-carbon polyunsaturated fatty acids, 16:2 and 16:3. The major intact triacylglycerol components were separated and identified by high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. A complex mixture of approximately 40 triacylglycerol components were identified and major components included palmitoyl palmitoleoyl oleoyl glycerol, palmitoyl palmitoleoyl palmitoleoyl glycerol, myristoyl palmitoleoyl palmitoleoyl glycerol, myristoleoyl palmitoyl palmitoleoyl glycerol, and palmitoyl palmitoleoyl linolenoyl glycerol. The function of these internal lipids and their relevance to winter survival and post-wintering development of M. rotundata is discussed.

Abstract
Fatty acid composition of the diet may be essential to the development of breast cancer. We studied the ability of several fatty acids of serum total lipids to predict breast cancer incidence in a case-control study nested within a longitudinal population study. The proportions of fatty acids in serum total lipids were determined from stored serum samples collected at baseline for 127 incident breast cancer cases and 242 matched controls. Women with a higher proportion of total polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) in serum had a reduced risk of breast cancer. The odds ratio (OR) between the highest and lowest tertiles of serum PUFA was 0.31 (95% confidence interval, CI = 0.12-0.77). This association was mainly due to n-6 PUFAs and especially to linoleic acid. The ORs were 0.35 (CI = 0.14-0.84) and 0.29 (CI = 0.12-0.73), respectively. Of the monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs), higher trans-11-18:1 levels were related to an increased breast cancer risk (OR = 3.69, CI = 1.35-10.06). The association was stronger in postmenopausal than in premenopausal women. The present study suggests that higher serum proportions of the n-6 PUFA linoleic acid and lower proportions of the MUFA trans-11-18:1 fatty acid predict a reduced incidence of breast cancer.

Abstract
The effect of chemical enhancers (e.g., fatty acids, limonene, depilatory lotions) and iontophoresis was investigated on the in vitro permeability of leuprolide acetate through porcine epidermis. Franz diffusion cells and Scepter iontophoretic power source were used for the percutaneous absorption studies. Anodal iontophoresis was performed at 0.2 mA/cm2 current density. Fatty acids used were palmitic (C16:0), palmitoleic (C16:1), stearic (C18:0), oleic (C18:1), linoleic (C18:2), and linolenic (C18:3) acids. The passive and iontophoretic flux were significantly (p < 0.05) greater through fatty acids-treated porcine epidermis in comparison to the control (untreated epidermis) for leuprolide acetate. The passive and iontophoretic permeability of leuprolide acetate increased with increasing number of cis double bonds. Among the fatty acids tested, linolenic acid (C18:3) exhibited the maximum permeability of leuprolide acetate during passive (51.42 x 10(-4) cm/hr) and iontophoretic (318.98 x 10(-4) cm/hr) transport. The passive and iontophoretic flux of leuprolide acetate were significantly (p < 0.05) greater through the limonene and depilatory lotion treated epidermis in comparison to their respective control. In conclusion, iontophoresis in combination with chemical enhancers synergistically increased (p < 0.05) the in vitro permeability of leuprolide acetate through porcine epidermis.
