Abstract
Chronic administration of ethanol (2-5 g/kg, po) on days 1 to 6 and its withdrawal produced anxiogenic reaction in mice and rats as assessed on the elevated plus-maze. Daily administration of BR-16A (100 mg/kg) prior to ethanol intoxication for 6 days prevented withdrawal induced anxiety in both rats and mice. However, acute administration of a single dose of BR-16A, to animals withdrawn from ethanol, i.e. on the 7th day, showed significant anxiogenic response. Ethanol withdrawal also sensitized the convulsogenic reaction to pentylenetetrazole (PTZ). A non-convulsive dose (40 or 60 mg/kg) of PTZ produced full blown convulsions and increased mortality in ethanol withdrawn rats and mice, respectively. Both acute and chronic administration of BR-16A (100 mg/kg) exhibited significant protection against ethanol withdrawal-induced reduction in PTZ threshold in rats and mice. The results suggest the usefulness of this safe herbal psychotropic preparation in the management of ethanol withdrawal reactions.

Abstract
The time of first stool was studied in 144 infants with a birth weight of 1000 gm or less. Median age at passage of the first stool was 3 days, and 90% of the infants passed stool by 12 days after birth. There was no relationship between the time of passage of the first stool and either birth weight or gestational age. Of the 114 infants, 88 (77%) passed stool before the initiation of any enteral feeding. The passage of the first stool was delayed in male compared with female infants (p = 0.03).

Abstract
Carbon monoxide, an activator of guanylyl cyclase, is formed by the action of the enzyme heme oxygenase. By in situ hybridization in brain slices, discrete neuronal localization of messenger RNA for the constitutive form of heme oxygenase throughout the brain has been demonstrated. This localization is essentially the same as that for soluble guanylyl cyclase messenger RNA. In primary cultures of olfactory neurons, zinc protoporphyrin-9, a potent selective inhibitor of heme oxygenase, depletes endogenous guanosine 3',5'-monophosphate (cGMP). Thus, carbon monoxide, like nitric oxide, may be a physiologic regulator of cGMP. These findings, together with the neuronal localizations of heme oxygenase, suggest that carbon monoxide may function as a neurotransmitter.

Abstract
The role of D-1 and D-2 dopamine (DA) receptors in nociception in naive as well as reserpinized mice and the modulation of the nociceptive action of morphine or naloxone by the selective D-1 and D-2 DA agonists, was investigated in mice. The D-2 DA agonists, B-HT 920 and bromocriptine produced an anti-nociceptive effect in naive mice and reversed the hyperalgesic effect of reserpine (2 mg/kg, 4 h prior) pre-treatment. The D-1 DA agonist, SKF 38393 (5 mg/kg) failed to alter the nociceptive responsiveness of naive and reserpinized mice. Apomorphine, a mixed D-1/D-2 DA agonist, produced significant analgesia in naive mice and also reversed reserpine-induced hyperalgesia. SKF 38393 (5 mg/kg) enhanced the anti-nociceptive effect of B-HT 920 (0.1 mg/kg) in naive and reserpine-pre-treated mice. The anti-nociceptive response of morphine (5 mg/kg) was enhanced by B-HT 920 while SKF 38393 reduced the same. Apomorphine (0.5 mg/kg) or the combination of B-HT 920 (0.1 mg/kg) and SKF 38393 (5 mg/kg) failed to enhance the anti-nociceptive effect of morphine. Reserpine (2 mg/kg, 4 h prior) pre-treatment significantly reduced the anti-nociceptive effect of morphine. Similarly, the hyperalgesic action of naloxone (20 mg/kg) was reversed by B-HT 920, bromocriptine and apomorphine but not by SKF 38393. The reversal of the hyperalgesic action of naloxone by B-HT 920 was blocked by pre-treatment with haloperidol (0.5 mg/kg) and sulpiride (100 mg/kg). SKF 38393 (5 mg/kg) failed to potentiate the reversal action of B-HT 920 against naloxone. These data suggest a predominant role of D-2 DA receptors in anti-nociception and the possibility of the existence of an interlink between the DAergic and opioid systems.

Abstract
Clinical and electromyographic findings do not clearly distinguish inclusion body myositis (IBM) from chronic polymyositis (PM). The rimmed vacuoles and filamentous nuclear and cytoplasmic inclusions that characterize IBM are often sparse and may be overlooked; conversely, these features may occasionally be seen in other diseases. Preliminary studies suggested that muscle fiber hypertrophy occurred more frequently in IBM than in PM. To investigate whether fiber hypertrophy can be used to improve the ability to separate IBM from PM, we report a morphometric analysis of 28 IBM cases, 22 PM and 22 dermatomyositis (DM) cases. The analysis, using a computer automated system, included proportion of hypertrophied fibers and also fiber type proportions, average fiber diameter, proportion of atrophic and angulated fibers, and the co-dispersion index (CDI). The proportion of hypertrophied fibers was greater in IBM than the other two conditions (IBM (mean +/- SEM) 31.0 +/- 4.7% and 12.2 +/- 2.4% for type 1 and type 2 fibers, respectively, compared to 9.8 +/- 3.0% and 3.3 +/- 1.7% in PM, and 7.7 +/- 2.7% and 3.9 +/- 1.9% in DM). These differences were statistically significant (P < 0.05) in both sexes for type 1 fibers and in women for type 2 fibers. Also, the average fiber size and hypertrophy factors for type 1 and type 2 fibers were increased in IBM compared to PM and DM. This study confirms that the presence of muscle fiber hypertrophy in biopsies from IBM patients may help differentiate them from other clinically similar inflammatory myopathies.

Abstract
Chronic treatment with BR-16A (20-500 mg/kg) followed by saline on days 1 to 9 failed to produce any significant change in tail-flick latency from the saline-pretreated group in mice. Repeated administration of BR-16A(20-500 mg/kg) for 9 days however, attenuated the development of tolerance to the analgesic effect of morphine (10 mg/kg). BR-16A (20-500 mg/kg) also suppressed, in a dose-dependent manner, the development of morphine dependence as assessed by naloxone (2 mg/kg)-precipitated withdrawal on day 10 of testing.

Abstract
Two cases of childhood muscular dystrophy are described. One of them had clinical features suggestive of Emery-Dreifuss muscular dystrophy and the other with some features of Prader-Willi syndrome, besides proximal muscle weakness. Muscle biopsy from both cases revealed a clear abnormality of dystrophin, and were diagnosed as having Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) by immunofluorescence examination; that is, absent dystrophin at the membrane of the muscle fibers. The clinical spectrum of DMD-related myopathies and the importance of dystrophin testing in childhood muscular dystrophies is discussed.

Abstract
The radioprotective effect of venoruton [O-(beta-hydroxyethyl)-rutoside] has been assessed in the hematological profile of Swiss albino male rats subjected to a single dose of 300 rads whole body gamma radiation. The results showed that the severity of the radiation-induced abnormalities in the red and white blood cells is significantly lessened by venoruton administered prior to radiation exposure.

Abstract
Calcium-induced calcium release (CICR) pools have been demonstrated in brain and heart microsomes biochemically and autoradiographically by the sensitivity of 45Ca2+ accumulation to Mg2+, ATP, ruthenium red, caffeine, and tetracaine. The CICR pool colocalizes with [3H]ryanodine binding sites, supporting the notion that [3H]ryanodine labels CICR pools. Sites of CICR pools in the brain contrast with those of inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate (IP3)-sensitive Ca2+ pools with reciprocal localizations between the two Ca2+ pools in several structures. Thus, in the hippocampus CA-1 is enriched in IP3-sensitive Ca2+ pools, whereas CICR pools are highest in CA-3 and the dentate gyrus. The corpus striatum and cerebellum are enriched in IP3 pools, whereas the medial septum and olfactory bulb have high CICR densities. In cardiac tissue, CICR is localized to atrial and ventricular muscle, whereas IP3 pools are concentrated in coronary vessels and cardiac conduction fibers. The reciprocal enrichment of IP3 and CICR Ca2+ pools implies differential regulation of Ca2+ hemostasis in these tissues.

Abstract
Mixed D1/D2 dopamine (DA) antagonists, perphenazine (5 mg/kg) and haloperidol (2 mg/kg) induced catalepsy in rats. SCH 23390 (1 mg/kg), a D1 DA antagonist, also produced catalepsy. Co-administration of perphenazine (0.5 mg/kg) and SCH 23390 (0.1 mg/kg), at low doses, produced a marked increase in cataleptic response. B-HT 920, a D2 agonist, reversed the cataleptogenic effects of perphenazine, haloperidol and SCH 23390. SKF 38893 (5 mg/kg) reduced the cataleptogenic effect of SCH 23390 but failed to reverse haloperidol- or perphenazine-induced catalepsy. SKF 38393 (10 mg/kg), however, protected the animals against perphenazine- induced catalepsy. Combined administration of B-HT 920 (0.1 mg/kg) and SKF 38393 (5 mg/kg) enhanced the protective effect of B-HT 920 in SCH 23390-treated animals but not in animals treated with haloperidol or perphenazine. MK-801 (0.025-0.5 mg/kg), a non-competitive N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist, reduced the cataleptogenic effects of perphenazine, haloperidol as well as SCH 23390. The anticataleptic action of MK-801 was enhanced by scopolamine (0.1 mg/kg) but not by bromocriptine (1 mg/kg) or clonidine (0.05 mg/kg) in perphenazine-treated rats. Unlike B-HT 920 (0.1 mg/kg), SKF 38393 (5 mg/kg) potentiated the anticataleptic effect of MK-801 (0.01 mg/kg) against SCH 23390-induced catalepsy. The above data suggests D1/D2 interdependence in catalepsy and a modulatory role of D1 and D2 DA receptor stimulation on the anticataleptic effect of MK-801.

Abstract
Seven anterior aphasics, 7 nonbrain-damaged subjects and 7 normal controls were tested for their visual evoked potentials. Aphasics showed an attenuation of the long latency positivity related to interest in the stimulus. The attenuation may indicate the subject's failure to signal communicative intention. Thus the attenuated positivity may be a physiological correlate of a behavioral state (aphasia) induced by brain lesions.

Abstract
BR-16A (Mentat 50-500 mg/kg) improved acquisition and retention of a passive avoidance task in a step-down paradigm in mice. BR-16A (50-500 mg/kg) reversed scopolamine (0.3 mg/kg)-induced disruption of acquisition and retention. BR 16-A (50 and 100 mg/kg) attenuated amnesia produced by the acute treatment with electroconvulsive shock (ECS), immediately after training. Chronic treatment with ECS, for 6 successive days at 24 h interval, disrupted memory consolidation on the 7th day. Daily administration of BR-16A (50 and 100 mg/kg) for 6 days significantly improved memory consolidation in mice receiving chronic ECS treatment. BR-16A (20-500 mg/kg), administered on the 7th day, also attenuated the disruption of memory consolidation produced by chronic treatment with ECS. On elevated plus-maze, BR-16A (50 and 100 mg/kg) reversed scopolamine (0.3 mg/kg)-induced delay in transfer latency on the 1st day. The above data suggests a nootropic effect of BR-16A in naive and amnesic mice.

Abstract
Various doses of the non-competitive N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonists, MK-801 (0.1-0.5 mg/kg) and ketamine (2.5-10 mg/kg), produced a dose-dependent increase in stereotypic behaviour in naive mice. MK-801 (0.1 mg/kg) and ketamine (2.5 mg/kg) potentiated the stereotypic response of apomorphine (0.1-0.5 mg/kg) in mice pretreated with reserpine (5 mg/kg, 24 h prior) and alpha-methyl-p-tyrosine (150 mg/kg, 1 h prior) but not in naive mice. SKF 38393, a D1 dopamine agonist, enhanced whereas B-HT 920, a D2 dopamine agonist, reduced the stereotypic response of MK-801 in naive mice. The response of MK-801 was blocked by pretreatment with haloperidol (0.5 mg/kg), molindone (2.5 mg/kg), clozapine (7.5 mg/kg) and SCH 23390 (0.1 mg/kg). The present data suggest involvement of endogenous DA transmission in the stimulant action of non-competitive NMDA antagonists in mice. Dopamine D1 and D2 receptor stimulation, respectively, exert opposing effects on the behavioral expression of MK-801 in mice.

Abstract
Effect of BR-16A on various parameters of anxiety and transfer latency (TL) was studied in mice using elevated plus-maze. BR-16A (50-500 mg/kg) reduced the percentage of time spent in open arms and the percent preference of open arms for the first arm entry following acute as well as chronic drug administration. The total number of arm entries and the percentage of open arm entries remained unaffected. In combination with FG 7142 (10 mg/kg), BR-16A (100-500 mg/kg) further reduced the exploration of open arms. BR-16A reversed scopolamine (0.3 mg/kg)-induced delay in TL on 1st day. The reversal effect of BR-16A was enhanced by aniracetam (50 mg/kg). The data suggest anxiogenic and nootropic actions of BR-16A.

Abstract
The hypothermic response of B-HT 920, a D2-dopamine agonist remained unaltered while that of apomorphine, a mixed D1-/D2-agonist was significantly reduced following chronic electro-convulsive shock (ECS) treatment. SKF 38393 (5 mg kg-1), a selective D1-agonist potentiated the hypothermic response of B-HT 920 in non-ECS-treated rats. The response of the combination was, however, attenuated following chronic ECS treatment. These observations suggested a reduction in D1-receptor density following chronic ECS treatment in rats.

Thus far, we have been successful in preparing novel diblock and triblock copolymers comprised of poly(methyl methacrylate) and poly(butyl vinyl ether). Future work will focus on studying the morphology of both the diblock and triblock copolymers. Moreover, we are also interested in synthesizing triblocks with long poly(butyl vinyl ether) segments and short PMMA segments, since these polymers have the potential for exhibiting good elastomeric properties.

Abstract
A study was conducted to isolate and identify microorganisms of medical importance from cockroaches (Blattella germanica) and to ascertain their vector potential in the epidemiology of nosocomial infections. Bacteria, fungi and parasites of medical importance were isolated and identified. Important bacterial pathogens responsible for wound infections, were further studies by antibiograms. One hundred and fifty-eight out of 159 (99.4%) cockroaches collected from hospital (test) and 113 out of 120 (94.2%) cockroaches collected from residential areas (control) were carrying medically important microorganisms (P less than 0.05). significantly higher (P less than 0.001) number of test cockroaches were carrying a higher bacterial load (1 x 10(4) and 1 x 10(5] as compared to control cockroaches. Multiple drug-resistant bacterial were isolated from test cockroaches. The diversity of drug-resistant bacterial species isolated from test cockroaches suggests their involvement in the transmission of drug-resistant bacteria. Various fungi and parasitic cysts of medical importance were also isolated from the test and control cockroaches, but the carriage rates were low. The findings suggest that cockroaches, in hospitals, can act as potential vectors of medically important bacteria/parasites/fungi.

The possibility that hospital cockroaches may act as vectors of drug-resistant Klebsiella spp. was investigated during Nov 1985 to April 1989, at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) hospital. Klebsiella spp. (majority Klebsiella pneumoniae) were isolated from 28.3% of hospital cockroaches and 28.1% of infected wounds of patients. Most of Klebsiella isolates from patients (96.3%), and hospital cockroaches (85.9%) showed multiple drug resistance to four or more antimicrobials. Similar strains of Klebsiella spp. were encountered among patients and hospital cockroaches. These findings suggest that hospital cockroaches may act as vectors of drug-resistant Klebsiella spp. and may contribute to the epidemiology of nosocomial infections.

Abstract
The hypothermic action of the thiazoloazepine derivative B-HT 920, an alpha 2-adrenoceptor agonist has been investigated in rats. B-HT 920 (6-allyl-2-amino-5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-4H-thiazolo-(4,5-d)-azepine dihydrochloride) (0.25-1.0 mg kg-1 i.p.) induced a dose-dependent hypothermia. This peak effect was seen within 60-90 min and lasted up to 120 min. Its action was potentiated by the selective D1-dopamine agonist SKF 38393 and inhibited by the D2-antagonists haloperidol (1 mg kg-1) and sulpiride (100 mg kg-1). The hypothermic action of B-HT 920 was centrally mediated; i.c.v. administration of 10 micrograms produced a significant fall in rectal temperature which was sensitive to blockade by haloperidol. B-HT 920 also potentiated the hypothermic action of apomorphine (0.1 and 0.5 mg kg-1) in a haloperidol sensitive manner. Reserpine (5 mg kg-1 i.p.) pretreatment reduced the hypothermic response of B-HT 920 (0.5 mg kg-1) but sensitized the response due to the combination of B-HT 920 (0.5 mg kg-1) and apomorphine (0.1 mg kg-1). Neither the selective alpha 2-adrenoceptor antagonists, yohimbine (1 mg kg-1) or idazoxan (1 mg kg-1), the histamine antagonist mepyramine (10 mg kg-1) nor the 5-HT antagonist cyproheptadine (5 mg kg-1) inhibited B-HT 920-induced hypothermia. Similarly, the selective alpha 1-antagonist prazosin (1 mg kg-1) and the beta-antagonist propranolol (10 mg kg-1) failed to modify the hypothermic action of B-HT 920. These observations demonstrated hypothermia induced by B-HT 920 is mediated by postsynaptic D2-receptors and D1- and D2-receptor interplay is essential for the full expression of hypothermia in rats.

Abstract
Background correction has been shown to be an effective and indispensable modification in the spectrophotometric determination of ascorbic acid. The decomposition of ascorbic acid in pharmaceutical samples was carried out by incubation with sodium hydroxide to give products that were insensitive to ultraviolet light. The rapid oxidation in air of ascorbic acid, especially in dilute solutions, was avoided by the use of the flow injection principle for spectrophotometric determination and by employing a carrier stream of an anti-oxidizing nature consisting of 6 micrograms ml(-1) of 2-mercaptoethanol in 0.25% sulphuric acid. The optimized method with a single channel manifold made use of a carrier stream flow rate of 1.1 ml min(-1), an injection volume of 50 microl, a delay coil of 50 cm (0.5 mm i.d.) and detection at 245 nm. The throughput was at least 180 injections h(-1). The proposed flow injection method yielded results for the analysis of 0-20 micrograms ml(-1) of ascorbic acid that were 99-102% (relative standard deviation 0.6% or better) in agreement with those produced by comparable methods involving titration with iodine, chloranil or 2,6-dichlorophenolindophenol [4-(2,6-dichloro-4-hydroxyphenylimino)cyclohexa-2,5-dieno ne], and high-performance liquid chromatography. When the agreement was not good (as low as 14% with respect to the method being compared), this was traced to the presence of substances which are known to interfere in one or other of the methods of comparison.

Abstract
The involvement of D2-dopamine receptors in the antinociceptive action of B-HT 920 (2-amino-6-allyl-5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-(4H) thiazolo-(4,5d)-azepine) has been investigated in mice. B-HT 920 (0.1-2.0 mg kg-1) and apomorphine (0.1-2.0 mg kg-1) produced a dose-dependent increase in tail flick latency. Analgesia induced by apomorphine was blocked by the D2-antagonist, haloperidol (1 mg kg-1) but not by the opioid antagonist, naloxone (1 mg kg-1). The antinociceptive action of B-HT 920 was potentiated by the D1-agonist SKF 38393 (5 mg kg-1), an action antagonized by haloperidol. The selective alpha 2-adrenoceptor blocking drug yohimbine (1 mg kg-1) and naloxone (1 mg kg-1) blocked the antinociceptive action of B-HT 920 (1 mg kg-1). Haloperidol, however, failed to modify the B-HT 920-induced increase in tail flick latency. B-HT 920 and apomorphine reversed reserpine (2 mg kg-1) 4 h-induced hyperalgesia. The reversing action of apomorphine was blocked by haloperidol but not by yohimbine. Thus, a role of alpha 2-adrenoceptors and D2-dopamine receptors is postulated in the antinociceptive action of B-HT 920.

Abstract
The present study attempts to demonstrate D1/D2 dopamine (DA) receptor interactions during stereotyped behaviour in mice. B-HT 920 [2-amino-6-allyl-5, 6, 7, 8-tetrahydro-4H-thiazolo-(4, 5-d)-azepine] (0.05-1.0 mg/kg), a selective D2-DA agonist, induced mild per se stereotypy consisting mainly of sniffing and rearing responses. Apomorphine, a mixed D1/D2 agonist, also produced typical stereotypic response in mice. The stereotypic response of B-HT 920 was blocked by D2-DA antagonist, sulpiride (50 mg/kg). The effect of apomorphine was not influenced by co-treatment with SKF 38393. Simultaneous administration of B-HT 920 (0.1-0.5 mg/kg) with SKF 38393 (5 mg/kg), a selective D1-DA agonist, elicited dramatic increase in stereotyped behaviours in naive as well as in 24 hr reserpinised (2 mg/kg) mice. Co-treatment of apomorphine (0.5 mg/kg) with B-HT 920 (0.1, 0.25 mg/kg) also resulted in a clearly synergistic effect on stereotyped behaviour. These potentiated responses were reduced or blocked by haloperidol, a D2-DA antagonist. The data suggest that in presence of concomitant stimulation of D1-DA receptors. B-HT 920 exhibits full expression of postsynaptic D2-DA receptor mediated behavioural effects.

Abstract
SERCA-2 is an endoplasmic reticulum Ca2+ ATPase present in brain [Gunteski-Hamblin A.-M. et al. (1988) J. biol. Chem. 263, 15032-15040]. We sought to map the distribution of this pump in the rat brain and investigate its relationship to Ca2+ uptake by brain endoplasmic reticulum. Using in situ hybridization and Northern blots with antisense oligonucleotide probes, we found that SERCA-2 is concentrated most densely in the cerebellum, especially in Purkinje cells, and in the hippocampus, with heavy labeling also in cortex, thalamus, pontine nuclei and the mitral cell layer of the olfactory bulb. 45Ca2+ uptake displayed a similar pattern with heaviest accumulation in cerebellum, hippocampus, cortex, thalamus and olfactory bulb. In corpus striatum and substantia nigra, relative 45Ca2+ accumulation was greater than SERCA-2 mRNA. Thus, SERCA-2 appears to be involved in Ca2+ uptake into endoplasmic reticulum in brain for release by inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate and other agents.

Abstract
Among rat peripheral tissues examined, Ins(1,4,5)P(3) receptor binding is highest in the vas deferens, with levels about 25% of those of the cerebellum. We have purified the InsP(3) receptor binding protein from rat vas deferens membranes 600-fold. The purified protein displays a single 260 kDa band on SDS/PAGE, and the native protein has an apparent molecular mass of 1000 kDa, the same as in cerebellum. The inositol phosphate specificity, pH-dependence and influence of various reagents are the same for purified vas deferens and cerebellar receptors. Whereas particulate InsP(3) binding in cerebellum is potently inhibited by Ca(2+), particulate and purified vas deferens receptor binding of InsP(3) is not influenced by Ca(2+). Vas deferens appears to lack calmedin activity, but the InsP(3) receptor is sensitive to Ca(2+) inhibition conferred by brain calmedin. The vas deferens may prove to be a valuable tissue for characterizing functional aspects of InsP(3) receptors.

Abstract
ATP dependent Ca2+ accumulation into oxalate-loaded rat brain microsomes is potently inhibited by thapsigargin with an IC50 of 2 nM and maximal inhibition at 10 nM. Approximately 15% of the total A23187-releasable microsomal calcium store is insensitive to thapsigargin concentrations up to 100 microM. Inositol-1,4,5-trisphosphate (IP3) maximally inhibits 40% of the net Ca2+ accumulation by whole brain microsomes. Its effects are non-additive with thapsigargin suggesting that the IP3-sensitive Ca2+ pool is a subset of the thapsigargin sensitive Ca2+ pool. Marked regional differences occur in Ca2+ transport rates and sensitivity to both thapsigargin and IP3.

Abstract
To assess the role of phosphatidylinositol turnover in taste transduction we have visualized, in rat tongue, ATP-dependent endoplasmic reticular accumulation of 45Ca2+, inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate receptor binding sites, and phosphatidylinositol turnover monitored by autoradiography of [3H]cytidine diphosphate diacylglycerol formed from [3H]cytidine. Accumulated 45Ca2+, inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate receptors, and phosphatidylinositol turnover are selectively localized to apical areas of the taste buds of circumvallate papillae, which are associated with bitter taste. Further evidence for a role of phosphatidylinositol turnover in bitter taste is our observation of a rapid, selective increase in mass levels of inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate elicited by low concentrations of denatonium, a potently bitter tastant.

Abstract
Autoradiographic imaging can localize 45Ca2+ selectively accumulated via the Ca2+, Mg2(+)-ATPase into endoplasmic reticulum stores in rat brain slices. 45Ca2+ accumulation is markedly stimulated by oxalate and displays a heterogeneous distribution which resembles the mRNA distribution for a sarcoendoplasmic reticulum Ca2+, Mg2(+)-ATPase. Inositol 1,4,5-triphosphate [I(1,4,5)P3] inhibits 45Ca2+ accumulation selectively into regions corresponding to those enriched in I(1,4,5)P3 receptor-binding sites and in Ca2+, -Mg2(+)-ATPase mRNA. Thus rat brain endoplasmic reticulum calcium stores are anatomically and functionally differentiated.

Abstract
Introduction of 'silent' exocrine atrophy (and endocrine 'enrichment') in pancreatic grafts following ductular blockade may have a role in human diabetes by circumventing currently elusive islet isolation/purification protocols. To explore this potential, pancreatic isografts were performed in 12 pairs of inbred Wistar NIN rats. Donor pancreatectomy was performed after distal clamping and canulation of common bile duct and injection of 0.5 ml. polyacrylamide gel (blocked n = 7) or normal saline (un-blocked n = 5) respectively. One to 2 m.m. fragments of the resulting mildly distended pancreases were transplanted in to 2 sites (renal capsule and iliac fossa subcutaneously) of cach recipient. Post-operative biopsies of the transplanted grafts (unilateral nephrectomy and iliac fossa biopsies) revealed macroscopic and microscopic evidence of necrotizing pancreatitis in both the groups at both the sites (histiocytic and giant cell infiltration, fat necrosis and focal calcification with destruction of exocrine and endocrine cells) as early as 1 and 3 weeks. Possible detrimental factors include: volume and pressure of ductal injection, graft sites (confined spaces), post-operative wound infection and bio-compatibility of the material used for ductular blockade.

Abstract
We report three patients who exhibited an unusual clinical course of chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (CIDP) in which mononeuropathic limb weakness developed 2, 11 and 23 years, respectively, before the development of generalized polyradiculoneuropathy. The eventual diagnosis remained uncertain until other causes of neuropathy were excluded, and the clinical disorder progressed to involve the other limbs. Focal or regional variants of CIDP suggest that the pathologic, and perhaps the immunologic, abnormalities can be localized and selective for prolonged periods of time. Although this clinical variant seems to account for a small number of CIDP cases, its recognition may aid in making an early diagnosis.

We report a 50 year old male admitted with complaints of episodic weakness. During the attack of paralysis there was no hypokalaemia. There were no clinical signs of thyrotoxicosis, but since thyroid function tests revealed hyperthyroidism, he was treated as a case of thyrotoxic periodic paralysis, with no recurrence of symptoms over 6 months.

Abstract
A 24-year-old man with a head injury developed a communicating hydrocephalus and underwent ventriculoperitoneal shunting. A revision was required, and the patient emerged from coma with severe behavior outbursts, which persisted for more than 1 year. Computed tomographic scans indicated a recurrence of low-pressure communicating hydrocephalus and a shunt revision was performed. The patient's severe behavior outbursts immediately decreased dramatically. The improvement continued long term and extended beyond the acute rehabilitation program.

Abstract
Two methods are described for the determination of amodiaquine in pharmaceuticals. In the first method, amodiaquine was treated with periodate at pH 7.5-8.5 to yield a chromogen, which is believed to be a 1,4-benzoquinone imine derivative, and extracted into chloroform for spectrophotometric assay. The maximum molar absorptivity was found to be 2.17 x 10(3) l mol-1 cm-1 at 442 nm. Primaquine and chloroquine, if present also, do not interfere. The second method, which was used for the simultaneous determination of amodiaquine, primaquine and chloroquine, is based on high-performance liquid chromatography on an octadecylsilane column using a mobile phase of methanol-water (80 + 20) containing 0.5% anhydrous acetic acid and an over-all concentration of sodium dodecyl sulphate of 0.5 mM, with detection at 340 nm.

Abstract
Peripheral-type benzodiazepine receptors were identified initially as binding sites in peripheral tissues with markedly different drug specificity than the central type receptors. The density of peripheral receptors varies greatly among tissues with selective localization within organs. Steroid producing areas of glands, such as the adrenal, testes and ovary, are highly enriched in these receptors. Intracellular localizations provide further insight into function with peripheral receptors largely if not exclusively associated with outer membranes of mitochondria. Purification of the peripheral receptor protein from rat kidney mitochondria reveals two apparent subunits with molecular weights of about 30 and 18 kD respectively. This complex is functionally intact as determined by its ability to reversibly bind PK-11195, Ro5-4864, and PK-14105 with high affinity and specificity.

Abstract
Two hundred and three laryngectomized patients have been evaluated for the possible causes of post operative complications. 58 out of 203 patients (28.5%) developed pharyngocutaneous fistula. Wound infection was present in 57 cases (28%). Two patients had flap necrosis and 12 patients developed dysphagia after surgery due to pharyngeal stenosis. The possible causes attributed to high occurrence of pharyngocutaneous fistula are, advanced nature of disease, preoperative radio therapy and wound sepsis. Prior to 1980, the incidence of pharyngocutaneous fistula in our series (Arora et al. 1983) was 41.6 percent. But it decreased to 13.7 percent between January 1981 to June 1987. The important factors which led to the decreased incidence of pharyngocutaneous fistula were thought to be the change of suture material for pharyngeal repair from chromic catgut to Vicryl, use of vacuum suction as a replacement of corrugated rubber drain and aseptic syringe drainage and postoperative coverage with broad spectrum antibiotics.

Abstract
We report a brother and sister who showed weakness, atrophy and fasciculations starting in adulthood, predominantly affecting the muscles of the shoulder girdles and distal lower extremities. Mild ptosis and facial weakness were present in both. Electrophysiological studies and muscle histology supported a neurogenic basis for the autosomal recessive scapuloperoneal syndrome in this sibship.

Abstract
Cancer of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) is very commonly encountered in Kashmir Valley of India. Serum copper and ceruloplasmin levels were investigated in 75 patients with GIT cancer, 42 non-GIT cancer and 75 normal healthy controls. The mean serum copper in the control group was 1,078 (S.D. 0,296) mg/L, while in patients with GIT and non-GIT cancers, it was 1,738 (S.D. 0,675) and 1,449 (S.D. 0,501) mg/L. Copper in both types of cancers showed significant increase (p less than 0.001). It was significantly higher in GIT cancers (p less than 0.01) as compared to non-GIT cancers. Ceruloplasmin in controls was 379 (S.D. 51) mg/L, while in GIT and non-GIT cancer patients the values were 363 (S.D. 75) and 364 (S.D. 77) mg/L, respectively. No significant difference could be found in either of the groups. In Kashmir Valley, the copper content in body tissues is likely to be on the high side because copper utensils are widely used by the general population. Water and milk samples stored in copper vessels and salt tea prepared in copper vessels showed markedly high levels of copper.
