Abstract
Simple Summary The sheep meat sector in southern Italy, based mainly on light milk-fed lambs, requires technical innovations to improve the production system, the product quality, and enhance the consumption of lamb meat. To fulfill these requirements, this investigation aimed to implement feeding strategies to reduce the cost and energy level of diets for dairy breed lambs slaughtered at an older age than the light lambs, applying a feed restriction at 75% and/or including an inexpensive and local byproduct, such as durum wheat bran (DWB), as a fiber source. The proposed feeding plans were suitable to increase the slaughter age of lambs up to 120 days and produce lean carcasses that, compared to those from 90-day-old lambs, were heavier and with improved meat quality in terms of major water retention and tenderness. The dietary inclusion of DWB limited the fat content and improved the health properties of lamb meat with regard to its antioxidant capacity and fatty acid profile, whereas it reduced lambs’ growth when associated with feed restriction. Abstract This experiment aimed to investigate the possibility to increase the carcass weight of dairy breed lambs and produce moderate-fat meat by applying inexpensive feeding strategies based on restriction and through the use of a fibrous byproduct such as the durum wheat bran (DWB). Sixty-five 45-day-old lambs of the Valle del Belice breed, divided into 6 groups, were fed alfalfa hay supplemented with concentrate feeds including DWB at 0% or 20% (DWB0, DWB20), supplied ad libitum (L) or restricted at 75% (R), and slaughtered at 90 or 120 days of age. The groups were as follows: DWB0-90L (n = 14), DWB20-90L (n = 14), DWB0-120R (n = 10), DWB20-120R (n = 9), DWB0-120L (n = 9), DWB20-120L (n = 9). The diet did not affect feed intake, growth or carcass weight of lambs fed ad libitum, whereas 120-day-old lambs fed DWB associated to restriction showed the lowest weight gain (105 vs. 170, 185 and 190 g/day in DWD20-120R, DWB0-120R, DWB0-120L and DWB20-120L; p = 0.04). The incidence of fat tissue in the hind leg increased (p < 0.0001) from 90L (5.82 and 5.45% with DWB0 and DWB20) to 120R (8.80 and 8.43% with DWB0 and DWB20) and 120L lambs (10.7 and 11.8% with DWB0 and DWB20). Older lambs’ meat, compared to that of 90L lambs, showed analogous levels of intramuscular fat, higher water retention, tenderness and lightness, and a more intense red colour. In meat from 120-day-old lambs, DWB intake tended to reduce the fat level (p = 0.009) and increased polyphenol content (1.10 vs. 1.62, and 1.02 vs. 1.65 g GAE/kg dry matter (DM) in 120R and 120L lambs; p = 0.02), antioxidant capacity (12.8 vs. 14.9, and 12.8 vs. 15.7 mmol trolox eq/kg DM in 120R and 120L lambs; p = 0.02), and the presence of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (FA) (1.61 vs. 2.81, and 1.43 vs. 2.61 g/100 g FA in 120R and 120L lambs; p = 0.007), thereby improving the meat’s health properties. The panelists perceived the effects of DWB inclusion as well as the feeding level with triangle tests.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the frequency of gastrostomy tube (GT) placement in extremely low birth weight (ELBW) infants, associated comorbidities, and long-term outcomes. STUDY DESIGN Analysis of ELBW infants from 25 centers enrolled in the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Neonatal Research Network's Generic Database and Follow-up Registry from 2006 to 2012. Frequency of GT placement before 18-22 months, demographic and medical factors associated with GT placement, and associated long-term outcomes at 18-22 months of corrected age were described. Associations between GT placement and neonatal morbidities and long-term outcomes were assessed with logistic regression after adjustment for center and common co-variables. RESULTS Of the 4549 ELBW infants included in these analyses, 333 (7.3%) underwent GT placement; 76% had the GT placed postdischarge. Of infants with GTs, 11% had birth weights small for gestational age, 77% had bronchopulmonary dysplasia, and 29% severe intraventricular hemorrhage or periventricular leukomalacia. At follow-up, 56% of infants with a GT had weight <10th percentile, 61% had neurodevelopmental impairment (NDI), and 55% had chronic breathing problems. After adjustment, small for gestational age, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, intraventricular hemorrhage/periventricular leukomalacia, poor growth, and NDI were associated with GT placement. Thirty-two percent of infants with GTs placed were taking full oral feeds at follow-up. CONCLUSIONS GT placement is common in ELBW infants, particularly among those with severe neonatal morbidities. GT placement in this population was associated with poor growth, NDI, and chronic respiratory and feeding problems at follow-up. The frequency of GT placement postneonatal discharge indicates the need for close nutritional follow-up of ELBW infants. TRIAL REGISTRATION ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT00063063.

Abstract
In this study we lay the groundwork for sustainability-oriented fisheries management, by estimating parameters the life history of orange-spotted trevally Carangoides bajad as well as trends of abundance in coral-reef habitats. We observed a new record of maximum size of 720 mm fork length. Carangoides bajad is a moderately long-lived (14 years) and slow-growing (K = 0.085 year-1 ) carangid species, closer to a K-selection species, with higher vulnerability to fishing and lower rates of recovery when the population level is low. Growth and biological composition in terms of length and age categories do not differ between the sexes, but females become mature faster. Reproductively active months (May-August) overlapped with those from Emirati waters further south. The abundance index showed a pronounced drop during 1990-1993, possibly in connection with habitat deterioration during the Gulf War (1990-1991) oil spill. The index increased gradually from 1994 and has fluctuated close to the reference level of 1985 up to the present. Considering the findings of large-sized and old-age individuals and abundance index from coral reefs close to its level three decades back, the C. bajad stock in the western part of The Gulf appears to be in healthy exploitation status despite growing harvesting rates.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Childhood obesity continues to be a global health problem. Previous research suggests that linear growth retardation or stunting during early childhood increases the risk of obesity, but others have reported that rapid linear growth poses a greater concern than early nutritional status. OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to determine if growth trajectories are associated with body composition at age 8-10 y. METHODS Study participants consisted of 255 girls and 281 boys who participated in a follow-up of the Prenatal Omega-3 Fatty Acid Supplementation and Child Growth and Development (POSGRAD) Study. Sex-specific latent height class (LHC) trajectories were derived from 11 measures of height from birth to 5 y of age and used to calculate 3 distinct growth classes for boys (low, intermediate, and high) and 2 distinct classes for girls (low and high). Body composition at age 8-10 y was estimated using bioelectrical impedance analysis. Multivariable linear regression analysis was used to determine the relationship between growth trajectory classes and fat mass (FM) and fat-free mass (FFM) in late childhood, controlling for confounding factors. RESULTS In girls, there were no significant associations between LHC and FM or FFM. In boys, relative to the intermediate LHC, the low LHC had higher FM (β = 0.69 kg; 95% CI: 0.26-1.11 kg) and the high LHC had lower FM (β = -0.40 kg; 95% CI: -0.76 to -0.05 kg). Boys in the low LHC had significantly less FFM (β = -0.69 kg; 95% CI: -1.11 to -0.26 kg), and boys in the high LHC had more FFM (β = 0.40 kg; 95% CI: 0.05-0.76 kg) compared with the intermediate LHC. CONCLUSION Gain in height among boys, but not girls, in early childhood was associated with lower adiposity in late childhood compared with children with a slower rate of growth. Abstract
Size of organs/organisms is a polygenic trait. Many of the growth-regulatory genes constitute conserved growth signaling pathways. However, how these multiple genes are orchestrated at the systems level to attain the natural variation in size including sexual size dimorphism is mostly unknown. Here we take a multi-layered systems omics approach to study size variation in the Drosophila wing. We show that expression levels of many critical growth regulators such as Wnt and TGFβ pathway components significantly differ between sexes but not between lines exhibiting size differences within each sex, suggesting a primary role of these regulators in sexual size dimorphism. Only a few growth genes including a receptor of steroid hormone ecdysone exhibit association with between-line size differences. In contrast, we find that between-line size variation is largely regulated by genes with a diverse range of cellular functions, most of which have never been implicated in growth. In addition, we show that expression quantitative trait loci (eQTLs) linked to these novel growth regulators accurately predict population-wide, between-line wing size variation. In summary, our study unveils differential gene regulatory systems that control wing size variation between and within sexes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Children with single ventricle cardiac disease (SVCD) have poor growth in early life. Tube-assisted feeding (TF) is used to improve weight gain, but its impact on long-term growth remains unknown. We sought to compare the longitudinal growth of SVCD patients receiving TF after initial cardiac surgery with those fed entirely by mouth. DESIGN We conducted a retrospective cohort study of SVCD patients who underwent initial surgical palliation between 1999 and 2009. We defined TF as the use of nasogastric, gastrostomy, or jejunostomy TF. We compared maximal attained growth z-scores for each year of life between TF and non-TF patients. A secondary analysis compared surgical and clinical factors between groups. RESULTS A total of 134 patients were included; 64% were male and 68% underwent the Norwood operation. One third of patients (44) received TF. Adjusting for age, TF patients had an average of 0.56 lower weight-for-age z-score (WAZ) than non-TF patients (P = 0.007) through the age of 6 years. Longitudinal height was not affected by TF status (P = 0.15). In a subanalysis of Norwood patients, TF patients had lower WAZ at initial hospital discharge despite longer LOS. TF patients had diminished WAZ after adjusting for complications, interstage hospitalizations, and timing of subsequent operations. CONCLUSIONS In this single-center study, patients with SVCD requiring TF at discharge from initial surgical palliation had diminished WAZ at discharge and on long-term follow-up, despite controlling for other identifiable risk factors. Further investigation is needed to understand the mechanisms underlying this phenomenon and to risk stratify infants who go home on TF.

Abstract
Acetate can be efficiently metabolized by the green microalga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii. The regular concentration is 17 mM, although higher concentrations are reported to increase starch and fatty acid content. To understand the responses to higher acetate concentrations, Chlamydomonas cells were cultivated in batch mode in the light at 17, 31, 44, and 57 mM acetate. Metabolic analyses show that cells grown at 57 mM acetate possess increased contents of all components analyzed (starch, chlorophylls, fatty acids, and proteins), with a three-fold increased volumetric biomass yield compared to cells cultivated at 17 mM acetate at the entry of stationary phase. Physiological analyses highlight the importance of photosynthesis for the low-acetate and exponential-phase samples. The stationary phase is reached when acetate is depleted, except for the cells grown at 57 mM acetate, which still divide until ammonium exhaustion. Surprisal analysis of the transcriptomics data supports the biological significance of our experiments. This allows the establishment of a model for acetate assimilation, its transcriptional regulation and the identification of candidates for genetic engineering of this metabolic pathway. Altogether, our analyses suggest that growing at high-acetate concentrations could increase biomass productivities in low-light and CO2-limiting air-bubbled medium for biotechnology.

Improvement of Feed Efficiency in Pigs through Microbial Modulation via Fecal Microbiota Transplantation in Sows and Dietary Supplementation of Inulin in Offspring. Appl Environ Microbiol 2019; 85:AEM.01255-19. Abstract
As previous studies have demonstrated a link between the porcine intestinal microbiome and feed efficiency (FE), microbiota manipulation may offer a means of improving FE in pigs. A fecal microbiota transplantation procedure (FMTp), using fecal extracts from highly feed-efficient pigs, was performed in pregnant sows (n = 11), with a control group (n = 11) receiving no FMTp. At weaning, offspring were allocated, within sow treatment, to (i) control (n = 67; no dietary supplement) or (ii) inulin (n = 65; 6-week dietary inulin supplementation) treatments. The sow FMTp, alone or in combination with inulin supplementation in offspring, reduced offspring body weight by 8.1 to 10.6 kg at ∼140 days of age, but there was no effect on feed intake. It resulted in better FE, greater bacterial diversity, and higher relative abundances of potentially beneficial bacterial taxa (Fibrobacter and Prevotella) in offspring. Due to the FMTp and/or inulin supplementation, relative abundances of potential pathogens (Chlamydia and Treponema) in the ileum and cecal concentrations of butyric acid were significantly lower. The maternal FMTp led to a greater number of jejunal goblet cells in offspring. Inulin supplementation alone did not affect growth or FE but upregulated duodenal genes linked to glucose and volatile fatty acid homeostasis and increased the mean platelet volume but reduced ileal propionic acid concentrations, granulocyte counts, and serum urea concentrations. Overall, the FMTp in pregnant sows, with or without dietary inulin supplementation in offspring, beneficially modulated offspring intestinal microbiota (albeit mostly low-relative-abundance taxa) and associated physiological parameters. Although FE was improved, the detrimental effect on growth limits the application of this FMTp-inulin strategy in commercial pig production.IMPORTANCE As previous research suggests a link between microbiota and FE, modulation of the intestinal microbiome may be effective in improving FE in pigs. The FMTp in gestating sows, alone or in combination with postweaning dietary inulin supplementation in offspring, achieved improvements in FE and resulted in a higher relative abundance of intestinal bacteria associated with fiber degradation and a lower relative abundance of potential pathogens. However, there was a detrimental effect on growth, although this may not be wholly attributable to microbiota transplantation, as antibiotic and other interventions were also part of the FMT regimen. Therefore, further work with additional control groups is needed to disentangle the effects of each component of the FMTp in order to develop a regimen with practical applications in pig production. Additional research based on findings from this study may also identify specific dietary supplements for the promotion/maintenance of the microbiota transferred via the maternal FMTp, thereby optimizing pig growth and FE.

Abstract
Gene effects on the yield performance were compared among promising semidwarf genes, namely, novel gene d60, representative gene sd1 with different two source IR8 and Jukkoku, and double dwarf combinations of d60 with each sd1 allele, in a Koshihikari background. Compared with the culm length of variety Koshihikari (mean, 88.8 cm), that of the semidwarf or double dwarf lines carrying Jukkoku_sd1, IR8_sd1, d60, Jukkoku_sd1 plus d60, or IR8_sd1 plus d60 was shortened to 71.8 cm, 68.5 cm, 65.7 cm, 48.6 cm, and 50.3 cm, respectively. Compared with the yield of Koshihikari (mean, 665.3 g/m2), that of the line carrying Jukkoku_sd1 allele showed the highest value (772.6 g/m2, 16.1% higher than Koshihikari), while that of IR8_sd1, d60 and IR8_sd1 plus d60, was slightly decreased by 7.1%, 5.5%, and 9.7% respectively. The line carrying Jukkoku_sd1 also showed the highest value in number of panicles and florets/panicle, 16.2% and 11.1% higher than in Koshihikari, respectively, and these effects were responsible for the increases in yield. The 1000-grain weight was equivalent among all genetic lines. Except for the semidwarf line carrying Jukkoku_sd1, semidwarf line carrying d60 was equivalent to line carrying IR8_sd1in the yield of unpolished rice, and yield components such as panicle length, panicle number, floret number /panicle. Therefore, the semidwarfing gene d60 is one of the best possible choices in practical breeding.

Abstract
Depending on the climate, garlic can be planted either in the fall or spring for a harvest in the summer, but spring planting might require the strengthening of the plant by external techniques. We have used low pressure, inductively coupled, radio frequency oxygen plasma for the treatment of peeled garlic cloves of a spring-planted Slovenian autochthonous cultivar. The aim of the study was to assess the effects of plasma treatment on garlic clove shoot and root growth and, ultimately, the yield. The roles of surface chemistry, surface morphology, and water uptake in these effects were also evaluated. The plasma treatment of cloves induced increases in water uptake. The increases were explained by changes in surface morphology that were determined by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Nanostructured epicuticular wax structures appeared at the cuticle surface. The optimal treatment parameters accelerated root growth, but not shoot growth, in a laboratory setting. After growth in the field, the trends indicated that plant height and dried bulb mass increase, but the improvements were not statistically significant.

Effect of early shearing during gestation on the productive and reproductive behavior of female sheep offspring in their first 18 months of age. Animal 2019; 14:807-813. [PMID: 31662128 DOI: 10.1017/s1751731119002441] [Citation(s) in RCA: 4] [Impact Index Per Article: 0.8] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Indexed: 11/07/2022] Open
Abstract
The research has shown the interesting contributions of shearing in mid-gestation on the performance of lambs from birth to weaning. Other studies have reported that shearing at early pregnancy influences the development of the placenta and lamb live weight at birth. However, there was a lack of information on the effect of early-prepartum shearing on the behavior of the offspring from weaning onward. This study evaluated the effect of shearing ewes at 50 days of gestation on the growth, reproductive behavior and response to a gastrointestinal parasite challenge in the female offspring from weaning to 18 months old. Fifty-seven Polwarth female lambs were used, 22 being singles and 35 twins born to ewes either shorn at 50 days of pregnancy (PS, n = 23) or shorn at 62 days postpartum (U, control, n = 34) resulting in four subgroups: single lambs born to PS ewes (n = 8), born to U ewes (n = 14), twin lambs born to PS ewes (n = 15) or born to U ewes (n = 20). All progeny were managed together under improved pasture with a minimum forage allowance of 6% live weight on dry basis. Body weight, body condition score and fecal eggs count were recorded every 14 days from weaning to 18 months of age. Concentrations of progesterone were measured weekly (from 4 to 10 months of age and from 14 to 18 months of age) to establish the onset of puberty. Ovulation rate at an induced and a natural heat (545 ± 1.0 and 562 ± 1.0 day old) was recorded. Prepartum shearing did not affect the age at puberty or the ovulation rate of female offspring, but those born as singles were more precocious ( P = 0.03) and heavier ( P = 0.02) at puberty than twin born lambs. Both the average value of parasite egg count ( P = 0.0 7) and the Famacha index ( P = 0.02) for the entire study period were lower in lambs born to prepartum shorn ewes than those born to postpartum shorn ewes. In conclusion, shearing at 50 days of gestation did not affect the growth or the reproductive behavior of female offspring. However, female lambs born from ewe shorn during gestation showed a better response to the parasitic challenge, and further research is required to confirm this.

Abstract
Life-history traits of individuals in marine populations exhibit large sources of variability. In marine fish, variation of individual size at a given age has three main components: (1) spatial, correlated with the location in which individuals are caught, (2) temporal, correlated with the time when individuals are caught, and (3) generational, correlated with the year of birth of the examined individuals. These variations, if present, have practical implications for individual fitness as well as for sampling, survey design, and population assessment. Disentangling these variations and understanding their sources is hard, given the potentially correlated nature of their effects on individual traits. This study examines the size-at-age relationship of the Bering Sea Pacific cod, an economically and ecologically important groundfish. We used extensive records spanning 1994 to 2016 (inclusive) of 25,213 observations of both environmental variables and catch, lengths, and ages. We found that the average size of individuals of the same age could differ up to 7 cm. Notably, we found that the cohort composition of the sampled population explained >75% of the year effect and that individuals caught in the northwest and shallower portion of the sampling area were on average 5 cm smaller than individuals caught in the southern and deeper portion. We further found that northwest movement of young cod (age 1-5) as a result of warming places individuals in areas where we predict them to have smaller size at age. Smaller and less conditioned individuals are less fecund and may not be able to perform long migrations to return to their distant spawning grounds. Both the spatial distribution and water temperature experienced by Pacific cod in the Bering Sea are changing, and this study provides a mechanism for how these changes affect Pacific cod life-history traits and individual fitness.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Meconium ileus (MI) affects up to 20% of newborns with cystic fibrosis (CF). We compared clinical outcomes between Australian paediatric CF patients with and without meconium ileus (non-MI). METHODS This was a retrospective case-control study of MI and non-MI patients in New South Wales, Australia, from 1988 to 2010. MI patients were matched 1:1 with pancreatic insufficient non-MI patients for age, sex and CF clinic. Clinical measurements, nutrition and gastrointestinal outcomes over this period were compared between groups using linear mixed models for continuous variables to account for age. RESULTS There were 162 matched pairs (N=324, 52% female) with mean (SD) age of 15.3 (8.2) and 14.9 (7.9) years for MI and non-MI patients respectively (P=0.6). MI patients aged 5-23 had poorer FEV1% compared to non-MI patients (estimate -0.070 SE [0.02], P=0.003). There were no significant differences in P. aeruginosa isolation rates; however S. aureus isolation rates were lower in MI patients (72%) compared to non-MI (82%) (OR 0.6 [0.3-1.0], P=0.03). Chronic colonisation rates for P. aeruginosa and S. aureus were not significantly different between groups. MI patients aged 2-20 had significantly lower BMI Z-scores over time (estimate -0.25 SE [0.1], P=0.02). MI patients were more likely to receive oral feed supplements (OR 2.8 [1.4-6.1], P=0.003) and gastrostomy formation (OR 4.4 [1.1-24.6], P=0.02). CONCLUSIONS CF patients with MI may have worse lung function, growth and nutrition than non-MI patients over time. Meconium ileus may be an early poor prognostic factor for CF.

Morphometric characterization of the very young child mandibular growth pattern: What happen before and after the deciduous dentition development? Abstract
OBJECTIVES Numerous tools have been developed to characterize the morphometry of 3D models. The aim of this study was to apply these techniques to better understand the morphometric growth pattern of healthy children's mandibles. MATERIAL AND METHODS The study sample was composed of 480 very young children aged from 36 gestational weeks to 7 years old. The sample was divided into three subsamples according to the development stages of their deciduous dentition. Several biometric data were collected on 3D mandibular models. RESULTS There was homothetic growth during the first years of life. Once all deciduous teeth were fully erupted, the mandibular corpus warped more independently of the ramus, and the inter-individual variability was more pronounced. Throughout the growth period, several subgroups could be identified, highlighting the morphological growth pattern of the mandible. CONCLUSIONS A particular morphogenesis of the mandible during the growth period was observed, which was correlated with deciduous dentition development. In younger individuals, this morphological pattern was mainly characterized by the progressive closure of the chin symphysis and ramus growth. The tongue movements in the oral space, depending on whether the child was bottle- or breast-fed, may explain this result. As the children grew older, the mandible widened to create sufficient space for the developing teeth buds. During the eruption of deciduous dentition, the mandible took on various morphologies, which was likely based on the child's sex and diet. Therefore, we assume that this mandibular morphogenesis is induced by the functional strains affecting the mandible during deciduous teeth development.

Abstract
With ongoing climate change, drought events are becoming more frequent and will affect biomass formation when occurring during pre-flowering stages. We explored growth over time under such a drought scenario, via non-invasive imaging and revealed the underlying key genetic factors in spring barley. By comparing with well-watered conditions investigated in an earlier study and including information on timing, QTL could be classified as constitutive, drought or recovery-adaptive. Drought-adaptive QTL were found in the vicinity of genes involved in dehydration tolerance such as dehydrins (Dhn4, Dhn7, Dhn8, and Dhn9) and aquaporins (e.g. HvPIP1;5, HvPIP2;7, and HvTIP2;1). The influence of phenology on biomass formation increased under drought. Accordingly, the main QTL during recovery was the region of HvPPD-H1. The most important constitutive QTL for late biomass was located in the vicinity of HvDIM, while the main locus for seedling biomass was the HvWAXY region. The disappearance of QTL marked the genetic architecture of tiller number. The most important constitutive QTL was located on 6HS in the region of 1-FEH. Stage and tolerance specific QTL might provide opportunities for genetic manipulation to stabilize biomass and tiller number under drought conditions and thereby also grain yield.

Abstract
Large-scale loach (Paramisgurnus dabryanus) is a commercially important species in East Asia; however, the cultured population that exhibited degradation of germplasm resource cannot meet the market needs, and the genome resources for P. dabryanus are still lacking. In this study, the first high-density genetic map of P. dabryanus was constructed using 15,830 SNP markers based on high-throughput sequencing with an improved SLAF-seq strategy. The quantitative trait locus (QTL) mapping for sex, growth, and morphology traits was performed for the first time. The genetic map spanned 4,657.64 cM in length with an average inter-marker distance of 0.30 cM. QTL mapping and association analysis identified eight QTLs of growth traits, nine QTLs of morphology traits, and five QTLs of sex-related traits, respectively. Interestingly, the most significant QTLs for almost all the traits were concentrated on the same linkage group LG11. Seven candidate markers and 12 potentially key genes, which were associated with sex determination and growth, were identified within the overlapped QTL regions on LG11. Further, the first genome survey analysis of P. dabryanus was performed which represents the first step toward fully decoding the P. dabryanus genome. The genome scaffolds were anchored to the high-density linkage map, spanning 960.27 Mb of P. dabryanus reference genome. The collinearity analysis revealed a high level of collinearity between the genetic map and the reference genome of P. dabryanus. Moreover, a certain degree of homology was observed between large-scale loach and zebrafish using comparative genomic analysis. The constructed high-density genetic map was an important basis for QTL fine mapping, genome assembly, and genome comparison. The present study will provide a valuable resource for future marker-assisted breeding, and further genetic and genomic researches in P. dabryanus.

Abstract
Simple Summary Northern river terrapins can adapt physiologically or behaviorally across a salinity gradient, so that they can move between freshwater habitats and brackish water or estuaries. However, there is no available information on the optimal salinity of this species for supporting captive husbandry programs before release to natural habitat. In the current study, the optimal salinity for the terrapins was investigated to serve the well-being of turtles. At the end of the rearing period, various observed parameters related to growth, feed utilization, and health indicated that optimal salinity for rearing the terrapins is about 4 ppt, while rearing in freshwater (0 ppt) or other brackish (8 and 12 ppt) water conditions had negative effects on some key parameters that reflect well-being. A polynomial regression fit to terrapin weight gain as function of salinity predicts the optimal salinity as 4.35 ppt. Findings from the current study could be directly used in ex situ conservation programs of northern river terrapins before release to natural habitat. Additionally, concurrent conservation and restoration of the wild habitats with preferred salinity is essential for flourishing terrapin population. Abstract Northern river terrapins (Batagur baska Gray, 1831) are Asia’s largest turtles living in both freshwater and brackish water. In the current study, the optimal salinity for head-starting programs of this critically endangered species was investigated in order to serve the well-being of turtles before release to natural habitat. Forty-eight terrapins (54.64 ± 0.18 g initial body weight) were randomly distributed to four salinity levels (0, 4, 8, and 12 ppt) and reared for eight weeks, using three replicates with four terrapins each. At the end of rearing trial, growth performance and feed utilization parameters were superior in terrapins reared at 4 ppt, followed by 8 ppt in the rank order of treatments. Negative stress responses were observed in terrapins reared at 12 ppt, as the fecal activity of amylase-to-trypsin ratio was changed significantly, but not that of proteolytic enzymes. The fecal thermal transition properties indicated an abundance of nutrients in the post-absorptive phase for terrapins reared at 4 ppt, followed by the 8 ppt treatment group. The preferred 4 ppt salinity had no negative effects on the health status of the terrapins in terms of carapace elemental composition or hematological parameters. Second-order polynomial regression suggests 4.35 ppt as the optimal salinity for maximal weight gain. Findings from the current study could be directly used in ex situ conservation programs of northern river terrapins before release to natural habitat.

Abstract
: The present research was performed to assess the effect of 24-epibrassinolide (EBR) on salt-stressed soybean plants. Salt stress suppressed growth, biomass yield, gas exchange parameters, pigment content, and chlorophyll fluorescence, but all these parameters were up-regulated by EBR supply. Moreover, salt stress increased hydrogen peroxide, malondialdehyde, and electrolyte leakage. EBR supplementation reduced the accumulation of oxidative stress biomarkers. The activities of superoxide dismutase and catalase, and the accumulation of proline, glycinebetaine, total phenols, and total flavonoids increased with NaCl stress, but these attributes further increased with EBR supplementation. The activities of enzymes and the levels of non-enzymatic antioxidants involved in the Asc-Glu cycle also increased with NaCl stress, and further enhancement in these attributes was recorded by EBR supplementation. Salinity elevated the methylglyoxal content, but it was decreased by the EBR supplementation accompanying with up-regulation of the glyoxalase cycle (GlyI and GlyII). Salinity enhanced the Na+ uptake in root and shoot coupled with a decrease in uptake of Ca2+, K+, and P. However, EBR supplementation declined Na+ accumulation and promoted the uptake of the aforementioned nutrients. Overall, EBR supplementation regulated the salt tolerance mechanism in soybean plants by modulating osmolytes, activities of key enzymes, and the levels of non-enzymatic antioxidants.

Genetic parameters for feed efficiency in Romane rams and responses to single-generation selection. Animal 2019; 14:681-687. Abstract
Feeding costs represent one of the highest expenditures in animal production systems. Breeding efficient animals that express their growth potential while eating less is therefore a major objective for breeders. We estimated the genetic parameters for feed intake, feed efficiency traits (residual feed intake (RFI) and feed conversion ratio (FCR)), growth and body composition traits in the Romane meat sheep breed. In these traits, selection responses to single-generation divergent selection on RFI were evaluated. From 2009 to 2016, a total of 951 male lambs were tested for 8 weeks starting from 3 months of age. They were weighed at the beginning and at the end of the testing period. Backfat thickness and muscle depth were recorded at the end of the testing period through ultrasound measurements. Feed intake was continuously recorded over the testing period using the automatic concentrate feeders. The heritability of RFI was estimated at 0.45 ± 0.08, which was higher than the heritability of FCR (0.30 ± 0.08). No significant genetic correlations were observed between RFI and growth traits. A favourable low negative genetic correlation was estimated between RFI and muscle depth (-0.30 ± 0.15), though additional data are needed to confirm these results. The selection of low RFI sires based on their breeding values led to the production of lambs eating significantly less concentrate (3% decrease in the average daily feed intake), but with the same growth as lambs from sires selected based on high RFI breeding values. We concluded that in meat sheep, RFI is a heritable trait that is genetically independent of post-weaning growth and body composition traits. A one-generation divergent selection based on RFI breeding values highlighted that substantial gains in feeding costs can be expected in selection schemes for meat sheep breeds.

Abstract
Kidney cancer (KC) seriously impacts public health. We detected the function and mechanism of circular RNA C3P1 (circC3P1) in KC cells. CCK-8, flow cytometry, migration, and invasion assay were respectively used to investigate the efficacies of circC3P1 and microRNA (miR)-21 on cell viability, apoptosis, migration, and invasion. Phosphatase and tensin homologue deleted on chromosome 10 (PTEN), circC3P1, and miR-21 expression were changed by cell transfection and detected by quantitative reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction. Moreover, the apoptosis/pathways-related proteins and proteins were detected by western blot analysis. Besides, the relation between PTEN and miR-21 was detected by luciferase assay. circC3P1 and PTEN were downregulated while miR-21 was upregulated in KC tissues. circC3P1 declined cell viability, migration, and invasion and caused apoptosis. Furthermore, circC3P1 negatively regulated miR-21; miR-21 mimic could reverse the efficacies of circC3P1. Besides, circC3P1 restrained the PI3K/AKT and NF-κB pathways by downregulating miR-21. Finally, PTEN was authenticated as a target of miR-21. circC3P1 restrained KC cell growth, migration, and invasion by regulating miR-21/PTEN axis and inactivating PI3K/AKT and NF-κB signaling pathways.

Short communication: administering an appeasing substance to Bos indicus-influenced beef cattle at weaning and feedlot entry. Animal 2019; 14:566-569. Abstract
The bovine appeasing substance (BAS) is expected to have calming effects in cattle experiencing stressful situations. Therefore, this study investigated the impacts of BAS administration during two of the most stressful events within beef production systems: weaning and feedlot entry. In experiment 1, 186 Bos indicus-influenced calves (73 heifers, 113 bulls) were weaned at 211 ± 1 days of age (day 0). At weaning, calves were ranked by sex and BW, and assigned to receive BAS (Nutricorp, Araras, SP, Brazil; n = 94) or water (CON; n = 92). Treatments (5 ml) were topically applied to the nuchal skin area of each animal. Calf BW was recorded and samples of blood and tail-switch hair were collected on days 0, 15 and 45. Calves that received BAS had greater (P < 0.01) BW gain from day 0 to 15 compared with CON. Overall BW gain (days 0 to 45) and BW on days 15 and 45 were also greater (P ≤ 0.03) in BAS v. CON. Plasma haptoglobin concentration was less (P < 0.01) in BAS v. CON on day 15, whereas cortisol concentrations in plasma and tail-switch hair did not differ between treatments (P ≥ 0.13). In experiment 2, 140 B. indicus-influenced bulls (∼27 months of age) from 2 different pasture-based systems (70 bulls/origin) were transported to a commercial feedlot (≤ 200-km transport; day -1). On day 0, bulls were ranked by source and BW, and assigned to receive BAS (n = 70) or CON (n = 70) and the same sampling procedures as in experiment 1. Bulls receiving BAS had greater (P = 0.04) BW gain from day 0 to 15, but less (P < 0.01) BW gain from day 15 to 45 compared to CON. No other treatment effects were detected (P > 0.14). Therefore, BAS administration to beef calves alleviated the haptoglobin response associated with weaning, and improved calf growth during the subsequent 45 days. Administration of BAS to beef bulls at feedlot entry improved BW gain during the initial 15 days, but these benefits were not sustained throughout the 45-day experiment.

Abstract
Upregulation of long non-coding RNA LINC00963 has been observed in several cancer types. In this study, we analyzed the clinical and biological significance of LINC00963 in breast cancer. The key microRNA (miR) mediating the action of LINC00963 was identified. We show that LINC00963 upregulation is correlated with aggressive parameters of breast cancer. Silencing of LINC00963 suppresses the proliferation and tumorigenesis of breast cancer cells, whereas LINC00963 overexpression exerts an opposite effect. Knockdown of LINC00963 enhances DNA damage and oxidative stress and sensitizes breast cancer cells to radiation. Mechanistically, LINC00963 antagonizes the repressive activity of miR-324-3p on ACK1 expression. Clinically, there is a negative correlation between miR-324-3p and LINC00963 expression in breast cancer tissues. Overexpression of LINC00963 or ACK1 rescues the inhibitory effects of miR-324-3p on breast cancer cell proliferation and radiosensitivity. In addition, knockdown of ACK1 attenuates LINC00963-dependent breast cancer growth and tumorigenesis. Taken together, LINC00963 promotes tumorigenesis and radioresistance in breast cancer through interplay with miR-324-3p and derepression of ACK1. LINC00963 may represent a potential target for the treatment of breast cancer.

Abstract
Several studies have shown that miR-215-5p acts as a tumor suppressor in certain cancers, but its role in the progression and metastasis of breast carcinoma remains incompletely understood. Herein, we prove that miR-215-5p is substantially down-expressed in breast carcinoma as compared with nontumor tissue. Up-regulation of miR-215-5p inhibits the aggressive abilities of breast carcinoma cells in vitro. We performed luciferase reporter tests to show that SRY-Box 9 (Sox9) is the target of miR-215-5p; as predicted, Sox9 depletion replicates the suppressive effects of miR-215-5p on breast carcinoma cells, and overexpression of Sox9 rescues the effects of miR-215-5p on breast cancer cell progression. In addition, a xenograft model assay was used to reveal that miR-215-5p inhibits breast cancer cell growth and metastatic potential in vivo. Overall, these results imply that miRNA-215-5p suppresses the aggressiveness of breast cancer cells through targeting Sox9.

Abstract
This study was designed to examine the effects of a prebiotic compound on the immune system, digestive tract histology, and stress physiology of shrimp. The specific effects of dietary supplementation of the prebiotic galactooligosaccharide (GOS or GTGOS) on shrimp health are scarce. This experiment, therefore attempted to evaluate the effects of GOS on growth, survival, intestinal microbiota, stress resistance and immune responses of Pacific white shrimp, Litopaneous vannamei. Over a 35-day trial, shrimps were fed diets, 15 times a day using automated feeder, supplemented with GOS at 0%, 0.25%, and 0.40% by weight. Shrimp survival and weight gain among the treatment groups were good but not significantly different (P > .05). Shrimp fed GOS-supplemented diets had reduced stress (glucose, P < .05) and increased immune responses (total hemocyte counts and phagocytic capacity, P < .05) compared to shrimps fed only basal diet with no supplementation. These results suggest that GOS not only changed the populations of gut microbiota but also reduced stress levels and enhanced immune response in shrimp.
